- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 8th of
- 0:17April, and great to have your company as we continue on our
- 0:21Lenten journey toward Easter. And if you've been listening
- 0:27reading the Bible with me for a while, you know, I get pretty
- 0:29sentimental when we start heading toward Easter and
- 0:32particularly in John because John.
- 0:35John has this incredible extended narrative as Jesus
- 0:39heads up with his disciples into that Passover room and really
- 0:43fleshes out the conversation and the teaching that Jesus had for
- 0:47his disciples and has for us. But today is the last day before
- 0:51that happens. Today is the last day that we
- 0:53follow Jesus walking around that time, dust in his sandals as a
- 0:58freeman before he heads up into that room and then is arrested
- 1:03and heading toward his passion. But let's grab our palm branches
- 1:08and wave them in the air as we read this reading today, as
- 1:12captured in John chapter 12. Six days before the Passover
- 1:26celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus,
- 1:31the man he had raised from the dead.
- 1:33A dinner was prepared in Jesus honour, Martha served and
- 1:37Lazarus was among those who ate with him.
- 1:40Then Mary took a 12 ounce jar of expensive perfume made from
- 1:45essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus feet with it,
- 1:49wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the
- 1:53fragrance. But Judas Iscariot, the disciple
- 1:57who would soon betray him, said that perfume was worth a year's
- 2:02wages. It should have been sold and the
- 2:05money given to the poor. Not that he cared for the poor.
- 2:09He was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciple's
- 2:12money, he often stole some for himself.
- 2:16Jesus replied, Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for
- 2:21my burial. You will always have the poor
- 2:23among you, but you will not always have me.
- 2:28When all the people heard of Jesus arrival, they flocked to
- 2:31see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from
- 2:35the dead. Then the leading priests decided
- 2:38to kill Lazarus too, for it was because of him that many of the
- 2:42people had deserted them and believed in Jesus.
- 2:47The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to
- 2:50Jerusalem swept through the city.
- 2:52A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and
- 2:56went down the road to meet him. They shouted, Praise God,
- 3:01blessings on the one who comes, in the name of the Lord, hail to
- 3:05the King of Israel. Jesus found a young donkey and
- 3:10rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said don't be
- 3:14afraid, people of Jerusalem, look, your king is coming,
- 3:18riding on a donkey's colt. His disciples didn't understand
- 3:24at the time that this was a fulfilment of prophecy, but
- 3:27after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had
- 3:30happened and realised that these things had been written about
- 3:34him. Many in the crowd had seen Jesus
- 3:37call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and
- 3:41they were telling others about it.
- 3:43That was the reason so many went out to meet him, because they
- 3:47had heard about this miraculous sign.
- 3:49Then the Pharisees said to each other, there's nothing we can
- 3:53do. Look, everyone has gone after
- 3:56him. Some Greeks who would come to
- 3:59Jerusalem for the Passover celebration paid a visit to
- 4:02Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee.
- 4:05They said, Sir, we want to meet Jesus.
- 4:10Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.
- 4:15Jesus replied, Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter
- 4:19into his glory. I tell you the truth, unless a
- 4:23kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains
- 4:27alone. But its death will produce many
- 4:31new kernels, a plentiful harvest of new lives.
- 4:35Those who love their life in this world will lose it.
- 4:39Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it
- 4:42for eternity. Anyone who wants to serve me
- 4:46must follow me, because my servants must be where I am, and
- 4:51the Father will honour anyone who serves me.
- 4:55Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray Father save me
- 5:00from this hour? But this is the very reason I
- 5:03came. Father, bring glory to your
- 5:07name. Then a voice spoke from heaven,
- 5:10saying, I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do
- 5:16so again. When the crowd heard the voice,
- 5:19some thought it was Thunder, while others declared an Angel
- 5:23had spoken to him and Jesus told them the voice was for your
- 5:27benefit, not mine. The time for judging this world
- 5:31has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out,
- 5:36and when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to
- 5:40myself. He said this to indicate how he
- 5:44was going to die. The crowd responded.
- 5:47We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live
- 5:50forever. How can you say the Son of Man
- 5:53will die? Just who is the Son of man
- 5:56anyway? Jesus replied.
- 5:59My light will shine for you just a little longer.
- 6:03Walk in the light while you can so the darkness will not
- 6:07overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness
- 6:10cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light
- 6:14while there is still time. Then you will become children of
- 6:18the light. After saying these things, Jesus
- 6:22went away and was hidden from them.
- 6:25But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of
- 6:28the people still did not believe in him.
- 6:31This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted.
- 6:35Lord, who has believed our message?
- 6:39To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?
- 6:43But the people couldn't believe. For as Isaiah also said, the
- 6:47Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts so that
- 6:51their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and
- 6:55they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.
- 7:00Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this because he saw
- 7:04the future and spoke of the Messiah's glory.
- 7:07Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the
- 7:11Jewish leaders, but they wouldn't admit it for fear that
- 7:14the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue, for they
- 7:17loved human praise more than the praise of God.
- 7:23Jesus shouted to the crowds. If you trust me, you are
- 7:27trusting not only me but also God who sent me.
- 7:31For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me.
- 7:36I have come as a light to shine in this Dark World, so that all
- 7:42who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.
- 7:46I will not judge those who hear me but don't obey me, for I have
- 7:50come to save the world and not to judge it.
- 7:53But all who reject me and my message will be judged on the
- 7:57day of judgement by the truth I have spoken.
- 8:00I don't speak on my own authority.
- 8:03The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how
- 8:07to say it, and I know His commands lead to eternal life.
- 8:12So I say whatever the Father tells me to say.
- 8:25Oh Jesus, we hear your invitation again and again for
- 8:29us to live in You and to follow your teaching.
- 8:34Our Lord, thank you for giving us such clarity of what You want
- 8:37from us. And you know that as hard as we
- 8:42try, our corrupted and broken human nature will make us fall
- 8:46again and again. But as you say in this chapter,
- 8:51you come not to judge the world, but to save the world.
- 8:57And you have saved us, Jesus, because you did exactly what
- 9:02your Father asked of you, and you walked that terrible road to
- 9:06the cross, and you went through the sacrificial death to atone
- 9:11us and bring us back into the loving embrace of you and our
- 9:17Father and the Spirit. Oh, thank you, Jesus, for all
- 9:21you have done for us. Continue this sanctifying work,
- 9:25sanctifying us, changing us, pouring your holiness and
- 9:30presence into us so that we can be more like you day after day
- 9:34after day. We love you and we pray all of
- 9:38this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
