- 0:13You'll find out why they call him Mo.
- 0:15And you'll get three exciting top fives.
- 0:18This is Xenomania.
- 0:38Ryan: Just can't get enough of the stuff.
- 0:42The stuff,
- 0:43Kearns: there.
- 0:43Ryan: Hey, the stuff is a great movie.
- 0:45The first time watch.
- 0:46I am very disappointed that it has taken me.
- 0:49How long now?
- 0:50Like
- 0:51Kearns: Your
- 0:51Ryan: it like
- 0:52Jon: Yeah.
- 0:53Ryan: Yeah, 30.
- 0:54Jon: Yeah.
- 0:55Ryan: years.
- 0:55Jon: Movies been out.
- 0:56Movies, movies.
- 0:58Been out longer than Ryan's Been out.
- 1:00Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:00Like 40, 40, 46 years.
- 1:03No, 40 years, right?
- 1:05Jon: Came out in 85.
- 1:0685. 41 years.
- 1:08Ryan: 41
- 1:08Kearns: I was two years old.
- 1:10That was a good year.
- 1:1185. I remember.
- 1:12Well
- 1:14Jon: I hope so.
- 1:14Kearns: on my, Cheerios that year.
- 1:17Jon: sugar on your Cheerios, and round up in your coffee.
- 1:20Kearns: yummy, yummy, yummy.
- 1:22Yeah.
- 1:22We're gonna get into the roundup, uh, parallels shortly, everybody.
- 1:26But yeah, this is Zeno Mania.
- 1:27We're gonna be talking about this stuff.
- 1:28You guys better be excited 'cause this damn good movie.
- 1:31Ryan: It,
- 1:32Jon: Damn good.
- 1:32Ryan: an underrated movie, I feel, because it like, I mean like, it
- 1:37starts off with like the acting's.
- 1:39Okay.
- 1:40But then it builds up and you start liking the characters.
- 1:43You're kind of getting in, like you're backing up their, cause
- 1:47you're backing up the story, it gets into it for like a B movie.
- 1:51It's pretty deep about corporate greed as we were saying and stuff.
- 1:54Kearns: a bee movie back then.
- 1:56Ryan: I,
- 1:56Kearns: be considered a bee movie back then?
- 1:58Ryan: I, I
- 1:59Jon: of, I mean that
- 2:00Ryan: I.
- 2:00Jon: Larry Cohen wasn't getting like big time properties or
- 2:04anything, or big time budgets.
- 2:05So this is
- 2:07Kearns: Okay.
- 2:07Jon: probably be, and then, but I mean, that's Larry Cohen.
- 2:11He's one of those guys that always got so much more out of stories and
- 2:16productions than you thought possible, like his whole career was that.
- 2:22Kearns: the number of sets and stuff like that was what popped out to me.
- 2:25You know, like the corporate.
- 2:27Headquarters and they're in the factory and they're at the mines.
- 2:30I was like, there's a lot going on here.
- 2:32Figured
- 2:32Jon: Yep.
- 2:32Kearns: little bit of money.
- 2:34The
- 2:35Jon: I,
- 2:35Kearns: so
- 2:36Jon: don't, I don't think it's a huge budget.
- 2:39The,
- 2:39Kearns: stuff.
- 2:42That's it.
- 2:421.7 million to make this.
- 2:44That's it.
- 2:45Ryan: Yep, 1.7 million,
- 2:46Kearns: they did a good job.
- 2:48Jon: I mean, when you think about it, there, there's some, there's some names
- 2:53in there, but they're not really names that were that big at that point in time.
- 2:59Like I think Paul Sino was
- 3:01Kearns: the
- 3:02Ryan: Yeah.
- 3:02Jon: Danny Ala were both kind of big, but they weren't into that
- 3:06much, so you didn't have to pay.
- 3:09Ryan: Fair?
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:10Kearns: shocked that the lead was as good as he was.
- 3:13when I started watching it, I was like, all right, this
- 3:14guy's gonna be a big stinker.
- 3:16'cause he's just such a weird, he's like, not, he's not a tool or anything,
- 3:19but he's an awkward leading man
- 3:22Ryan: Mo
- 3:23Kearns: leans into it so hard and it works
- 3:25Jon: Yep.
- 3:26David Mo Rutherford.
- 3:29Why do they call him Mo?
- 3:32Because every, every time you give him money, he always wants more
- 3:39Kearns: between that and chocolate chip, was that it?
- 3:42Ryan: chocolate
- 3:43Jon: Chip Charlie.
- 3:44Kearns: Chocolate chip Charlie.
- 3:46I was like, this movie's outta control.
- 3:48Ryan: It.
- 3:48Jon: Chocolate chip
- 3:49Ryan: so great.
- 3:51Jon: played by Garrett Morris.
- 3:52Who, what Of the few actors I've seen, not particularly like working for Larry Cohen.
- 3:59Kearns: Really, he did not like it.
- 4:01Jon: Hmm.
- 4:02He's never outright said it.
- 4:03He's, he did one of those in an interview.
- 4:05my mama taught me not to say something about somebody if I didn't have
- 4:10something nice to say kind of thing.
- 4:12Which is really, I think I understand it too, because he
- 4:15wasn't Larry Cohen's choice.
- 4:19Ryan: Okay.
- 4:20Jon: Larry Cohen wanted a young pre coming to America, Arsenio Hall.
- 4:26Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 4:28Kearns: mean, that would've been the choice though
- 4:30Ryan: That would've been cool, especially
- 4:31Jon: That would've been a cool choice, but I, I think an older guy works.
- 4:35Kearns: It did work.
- 4:36he crushed that part,
- 4:38Ryan: also Garrett Morris.
- 4:40And
- 4:40Jon: Yeah.
- 4:41Ryan: a underrated actor.
- 4:42He is just great.
- 4:43I mean,
- 4:43Kearns: He's in a bunch.
- 4:44Was
- 4:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:45Kearns: Dundee too?
- 4:46I don't know if he was actually, maybe not.
- 4:49Ryan: I remember him from the
- 4:50Jon: Yeah,
- 4:50Kearns: in a
- 4:50Ryan: Jamie Fox
- 4:52Jon: he was car wash.
- 4:55Ryan: Yeah.
- 4:55Yes.
- 4:56Kearns: wash my guy over here.
- 4:59That's elite ball knowledge right there, John.
- 5:00As the kids would say,
- 5:02Jon: I mean, listen, I'm cheating a little bit.
- 5:04I have his filmography up.
- 5:06Kearns: you don't confess to less, bro.
- 5:08They don't need to know that.
- 5:10Ryan: We'll just erase that.
- 5:12Jon: He was a cab driver and ant man also.
- 5:14Kearns: sick.
- 5:16Ryan: Which you have not seen probably 'cause you're against Marvel.
- 5:20Jon: No, I saw up to that point.
- 5:22the last one I saw was the one after the snapping everybody out of existence thing.
- 5:27Kearns: And oh, so you saw Infinity War and then you stopped before Endgame.
- 5:31Jon: No, I saw the, one after the snapping everyone out of end game.
- 5:35That was like 18 hours long or something.
- 5:37I was like, I'm, I'm pretty done with this stuff.
- 5:40This is a lot of time to invest.
- 5:41I could watch,
- 5:42Ryan: hours
- 5:43Jon: could watch, I could watch two movies like the stuff in that period of time
- 5:47Kearns: It's fair.
- 5:48Jon: and I'd pro I'd be a lot happier.
- 5:50So Marvel.
- 5:52Kearns: um,
- 5:52Ryan: movies.
- 5:53Kearns: to vector us away from the MCU, I liked how they, uh, began the stuff
- 5:58with like your, the isolation vibes, the family, the kid stuck with his everything.
- 6:05They started out pretty funny, like tremor style too, where the guy's like, what's
- 6:08this stuff when it's coming bubbling
- 6:11Jon: Yeah.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:12Kearns: they just steamroll right into it.
- 6:14They don't waste time.
- 6:15Jon: It's bubbling out of the ground and this dude thinks the
- 6:18best thing to do is taste it.
- 6:20Ryan: Exactly.
- 6:21Kearns: I knew I was, I mean, I was like dying when I watched this.
- 6:24I was very sick watching this movie.
- 6:26and I made it through the entire thing.
- 6:29I had to pause it a few times to like go puke and stuff.
- 6:31But other than that, I made it through in one sitting and I enjoyed
- 6:35it thoroughly the entire time.
- 6:36And that right there, like that was probably my first smile in 72 hours when
- 6:40he just reaches down and touches it.
- 6:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:44Yep.
- 6:44Kearns: are you doing?
- 6:45Huh?
- 6:47Ryan: It is like what you don't do in a horror movie, you know?
- 6:49And like
- 6:50Kearns: movie,
- 6:51Ryan: I, it's bubbling out the ground.
- 6:53Kearns: out of the ground and put
- 6:55Jon: In in, in real.
- 6:56Yeah.
- 6:56In real life.
- 6:57If it's coming out of the ground, don't put it in your mouth.
- 7:00Like
- 7:00Ryan: please
- 7:01Jon: check the, if you don't know what it is, don't put it in your mouth.
- 7:04Kearns: and then as one might expect, instantly,
- 7:09Jon: Instant.
- 7:10Yep.
- 7:11Kearns: addiction.
- 7:11Ryan: And they put a name on it and they call it the stuff.
- 7:15Jon: Yep.
- 7:15Kearns: that.
- 7:16So of course, corporate America gets their hands on it.
- 7:18They throw it into Greek yogurt, uh, containers.
- 7:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:21Kearns: like ricotta cheese actually is what it reminded me of.
- 7:25they, uh, mass
- 7:26Ryan: Really?
- 7:26Kearns: and sell and everybody starts eating the stuff.
- 7:29Jon: Yep.
- 7:29I've, I've always thought of this stuff as like, killer, cool, whip.
- 7:33Ryan: Ooh.
- 7:34Kearns: that's a
- 7:34Ryan: Yeah.
- 7:35Kearns: it.
- 7:35Ryan: It's like the, like the jiggle and stuff.
- 7:37It's like,
- 7:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:38Ryan: Cool Whip probably was cool.
- 7:40Whip
- 7:40Kearns: of got
- 7:41Jon: It might have been, yeah, I see the fluff too.
- 7:44Yeah.
- 7:44Ryan: Yeah.
- 7:46The shaving.
- 7:47Kearns: coming outta the mattress and things like that.
- 7:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:49Kearns: ooh, trippy.
- 7:51Ryan: it
- 7:51Jon: When, when the, when the stuff starts to move, that's when
- 7:54it, like, that's the warning sign.
- 7:57Like, let's not eat this anymore.
- 8:00Kearns: Now they're like, devouring it, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, no.
- 8:03Jon: Jason's the only one that figures it out for a while.
- 8:07Ryan: yeah, he does,
- 8:08Kearns: it's always good.
- 8:08It's always a kid.
- 8:10Jon: Yep.
- 8:11Ryan: but it's accident.
- 8:12You know?
- 8:12He just wanted a, like a late night snack.
- 8:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:15Ryan: he does is open the fridge and he sees it just dancing.
- 8:19Jon: Yeah,
- 8:19Ryan: a little wave.
- 8:20Jon: yeah,
- 8:22Ryan: No John Goodman, no dancing.
- 8:24Kearns: isn't, his dad like kind of beat him a little bit
- 8:27Ryan: Yeah,
- 8:28Kearns: him at the fridge, like that's very 1985.
- 8:30He's like, Hey,
- 8:31Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 8:32All right.
- 8:32What do in the fridge, whack,
- 8:34Ryan: you're
- 8:35Jon: to bed Whack,
- 8:36Kearns: for 40 seconds and he gotta fetch a switch.
- 8:39Jon: and then, and then it, then it's like, it's.
- 8:41So eighties.
- 8:42It's not over in the morning either
- 8:45Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 8:45Jon: they at breakfast, he's still taking this cheap shots at the kid
- 8:48for being up in the middle of the night looking for something to eat.
- 8:53Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:54Yeah.
- 8:55They didn't let it go.
- 8:56You're right about that too.
- 8:57Jon: Yeah.
- 8:59Kearns: Oh, you're giving me PTSD actually,
- 9:01Ryan: It,
- 9:02Jon: Yeah.
- 9:03My, me too, my own traumas there too.
- 9:07Kearns: So the kid, refuses to eat the stuff 'cause he saw it moving, but
- 9:11the rest of the family's on board big
- 9:12Ryan: Yep.
- 9:13Kearns: they kind of, they kind of take a break from him and
- 9:15them for a little bit and they
- 9:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:17Kearns: what's going on with this private investigator style guy.
- 9:21But he's not, he's like a corporate fixer,
- 9:24Jon: He's, he's a corporate spy
- 9:28Kearns: corporate
- 9:28Jon: and he's for
- 9:29Kearns: apparently.
- 9:30Jon: ex FBI Corp, current Corporate Spy, and he is hired
- 9:35by the Snack Food Consortium to.
- 9:40Figure out a way to bring this stuff down because it's cutting into their profits.
- 9:45Kearns: I mean, it was probably cutting into every food
- 9:47source's profits by that point.
- 9:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:50Ryan: yeah.
- 9:51Kearns: then he goes immediately to the marketing exec, and.
- 9:55Starts flirting with her
- 9:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:57Kearns: James Bond style and it works Everybody, it just works.
- 10:02He's like, Hey, I'm tall and I have money.
- 10:05And she's like, he, he, he, and they become a thing instantaneously.
- 10:12But yeah, he, that's kind of like where the journey goes and then it just
- 10:14turns sort of into an almost like a who done it style, not a who done it,
- 10:18but like, um, like a private detective style sort of investigation where
- 10:23they're just going from place to place, figuring more out about the stuff.
- 10:29Jon: Yep.
- 10:29Yep.
- 10:30He, he meets up with the fallen corporate executive chocolate chip Charlie.
- 10:36Kearns: That's the best.
- 10:37Jon: Whose family sold his company right out from under him
- 10:41Ryan: It is
- 10:41Jon: whose hands are registered as deadly weapons.
- 10:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 10:45He's got all the lines.
- 10:47Charlie,
- 10:48Ryan: Master
- 10:49Jon: Yeah.
- 10:49Ryan: fu
- 10:51Jon: Yeah.
- 10:51Good old chocolate chip Charlie.
- 10:53Kearns: kind of difficult set times while watching this to
- 10:55like pinpoint why it's so good.
- 10:58Like right up to when you get about right up to Chocolate chip
- 11:01Charlie, you're watching and you're going, this is a good movie.
- 11:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:04Kearns: this thoroughly, but you can't really figure out why.
- 11:07There's elements of a bunch of other things that you've
- 11:09experienced before in it.
- 11:11jingles, the anything super eighties is always fun and 85 is like, we've
- 11:17talked about this before, where the eighties don't really start until 1983.
- 11:20That's like late seventies up to that point.
- 11:23Same way the nineties don't start until like 1993.
- 11:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:26Kearns: but when you're in 85, you're in prime neon pants eighties,
- 11:31Jon: Yep.
- 11:32Kearns: that pretty well in this.
- 11:34Jon: They do.
- 11:35And some of the cultural icon touchstone people pop up and they're like, Clara
- 11:41Plar, you know, sort of reprising, where's the beef with, where's the stuff with,
- 11:46you know, a Abe Vigoda playing the, his typical cranky beleaguered husband.
- 11:53Kearns: Yep.
- 11:54Ryan: Yep.
- 11:54Kearns: have like a news, uh, didn't they have a TV personality
- 11:56do a plug for the stuff as well?
- 11:58Was it like a, was it like the Tonight Show or something?
- 12:01Jon: Yeah.
- 12:02Yeah.
- 12:02That's
- 12:03Ryan: Some similar.
- 12:04Kearns: who it was.
- 12:05Could
- 12:05Jon: yeah.
- 12:06Kearns: but I'm not sure which one.
- 12:07But it was definitely a real personality
- 12:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:10Kearns: in the movie, and I don't know how they pulled that off
- 12:13with their $1.7 million budget.
- 12:16Jon: I mean, that's the thing that I got, I go back to with, um,
- 12:19Garrett Morrison, Larry Cohen is.
- 12:22And he might have just asked those people to do it.
- 12:25People liked working for him, so it's weird that, this one person did not.
- 12:30Kearns: There's always that guy.
- 12:32Jon: Yeah.
- 12:33You know, I just have to believe that it was a result of not being
- 12:37the first choice and it, Larry Cohen probably didn't hide it.
- 12:41Kearns: He's been, he's probably been passed over as the first
- 12:44choice in a million projects.
- 12:47Jon: That, yeah.
- 12:48Kearns: a hard time believing that's the only reason.
- 12:49'cause it's him.
- 12:50He's a, he's a guy,
- 12:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:54Ryan: sadly.
- 12:55Kearns: not Don Cheadle talking about here.
- 12:58Ryan: No, no, not Denzel.
- 13:01Kearns: Denzel not the guy.
- 13:04the guy, but even like, he's not even like the number two guy.
- 13:07He is not like your
- 13:09Ryan: He's like the four,
- 13:10Kearns: Del
- 13:10Ryan: is sad,
- 13:11Kearns: like that.
- 13:12Yeah, it's true though.
- 13:14It's
- 13:14Ryan: you know?
- 13:15you're seeing how the stuff captures the eighties perfectly, and it does,
- 13:19and that's what I think brings, I think people who lived through the
- 13:24eighties or lived during that time more to this movie is a familiarity.
- 13:29Jon: Yeah.
- 13:29Ryan: of the colors.
- 13:30And it's like also a good beat too, like the story, like an hour and a half, but
- 13:35it doesn't feel like an hour and a half.
- 13:38It goes
- 13:38Jon: Oh, it's, yeah, it's a very tight hour and a half and
- 13:41there's, so on the arrow release, there's a 30 minute longer cut.
- 13:48I watched it.
- 13:49It's,
- 13:50Ryan: does it
- 13:51Jon: I some like, there's more of the non-story elements to it.
- 13:57There's more of the commercials and the music and that stuff, and a, you
- 14:01know, a little bit more to the plot.
- 14:03But I know Larry Cohen prefers the extra 30 minutes, but I think it's a
- 14:08better movie at an hour and a half.
- 14:11Ryan: Okay.
- 14:12Kearns: 90 minutes is the sweet spot.
- 14:14Unless you're doing something special and
- 14:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:17Kearns: to keep people's attention for that.
- 14:19You can't extend like a, a piece of Americana kind of thing.
- 14:23Like this is to pass 90 without really risking stuff, in my opinion.
- 14:28I agree with you.
- 14:29'cause that you're right about that tight 90 minutes.
- 14:31It's like it doesn't waste a second and it's perfect.
- 14:35it ends perfectly.
- 14:37It lands like little cliffhanger, leaves a bit open for a sequel.
- 14:41You're
- 14:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:43Yep.
- 14:44Ryan: Even.
- 14:44Jon: Yep.
- 14:45Ryan: the after credits.
- 14:49Jon: Yeah.
- 14:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 14:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:52Jon: Yeah.
- 14:52You could still do it.
- 14:53Yeah, you could still do it.
- 14:55Kearns: fast forward on a VHS.
- 14:57Ryan: Oh, I
- 14:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:58Ryan: 'cause I can't
- 14:59Jon: Or you,
- 14:59Ryan: of this stuff.
- 15:01Jon: or you just watch through, watch the credits and you know.
- 15:05Kearns: What do you think it tastes like This stuff.
- 15:07Ryan: A fluff.
- 15:08Fluff.
- 15:09Kearns: think it is Fluffer Nutter.
- 15:11Ryan: I, I think,
- 15:11Kearns: Well,
- 15:11Ryan: I mean.
- 15:12Kearns: John's already got something.
- 15:13Ryan: Or cool
- 15:14Jon: I've had, I've long had this belief.
- 15:17I think this stuff tastes like your favorite thing.
- 15:20I think this stuff doesn't taste like anything on its own.
- 15:24I think it tastes like what you want it to taste like.
- 15:27Ryan: like manipulating the mind.
- 15:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 15:31Ryan: would work out
- 15:32Kearns: your
- 15:32Ryan: actually.
- 15:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:34Kearns: pace buds.
- 15:35Ryan: Hmm
- 15:35Jon: Yeah.
- 15:36And that you can't stop eating it until you're a hollowed out stuffy
- 15:40Kearns: You know, what's
- 15:41Ryan: hmm.
- 15:41Kearns: refreshing about this?
- 15:42Did they ever do any sequels or anything like that?
- 15:46Jon: for the stuff.
- 15:46No.
- 15:47Ryan: Oh,
- 15:47Kearns: refreshing about it is, is that you don't find out if it's like
- 15:50an alien entity or if it is just like, um, a colony of fungus or if it's
- 15:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:56Kearns: or that.
- 15:56You don't ever find that out.
- 15:58And I kind of think it strengthens the movie
- 16:00Jon: Yeah.
- 16:01Be any explanation kind of kind of minimizes it.
- 16:05It takes some of it away.
- 16:07I.
- 16:07Kearns: because then you're getting into the blob and there
- 16:09was multiple times watching this movie where I saw, okay, I was like,
- 16:12okay, this reminds me of the blob.
- 16:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:14Kearns: me of the blob.
- 16:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:16Kearns: they never ever get into the point where it's derivative of the
- 16:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:20Kearns: because this is the stuff,
- 16:22Jon: Yep.
- 16:22Kearns: if that makes sense to anybody out.
- 16:24It even dies to fire
- 16:26Ryan: Yeah.
- 16:27Jon: Yep.
- 16:28Ryan: Yeah.
- 16:28Kearns: Well, actually the blob doesn't die to fire,
- 16:31Ryan: It gets hurt though.
- 16:33Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:33Ryan: it's a strong similarity, especially like how it moves in certain scenes.
- 16:37I was
- 16:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:38Ryan: are you gonna turn purple, are you not?
- 16:41But as I was watching it too, I was thinking of like old old xFi episode
- 16:46called Ice Be In the Episode real quick.
- 16:49Um, they find like this warm life form that's frozen in Antarctica,
- 16:53which supposedly they have Yeah.
- 16:56They, they find in, it's got like the mind control and stuff.
- 16:59And I was thinking about it while watching the stuff like.
- 17:03Because reading the synopsis is, everyone says it's an alien entity
- 17:07and it's like coming from the earth.
- 17:08Like
- 17:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:09Ryan: something further down on the earth as like think or suppose.
- 17:14And it could just be something like we said, like another entity or I
- 17:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:19Ryan: with Symbio because how it affects, you know, the whole body and controls.
- 17:26Jon: Yeah.
- 17:27Kearns: Well, there's lots of viruses that we've gotten, um, afflicted
- 17:30with throughout our history and stuff like that that have changed us.
- 17:34Like it's just a thing or it's changed our physiology and things
- 17:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:40Kearns: not outta the question at all
- 17:42Jon: Yeah,
- 17:43Kearns: If it's like a war.
- 17:43John's totally bored with this.
- 17:45John's like,
- 17:45Ryan: Sorry.
- 17:46Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 17:47Jon: I'm in.
- 17:47I'm into it.
- 17:48Kearns: us?
- 17:49Jon: Oh, of course.
- 17:50Kearns: for us,
- 17:50Jon: Of course.
- 17:51I have a game.
- 17:51Of course, there's a game, so.
- 17:54I'm not sure.
- 17:55I feel like this game might be easy.
- 17:58It might not be.
- 18:00I did it with Allison.
- 18:02It was very easy for her.
- 18:04Ryan: From what?
- 18:05Kearns: we are.
- 18:05Ryan: From what you told me, you said it was gonna be
- 18:08destructing, destruction, overload.
- 18:11Jon: it's either,
- 18:12Ryan: to
- 18:12Jon: you're either gonna have no issue with this with your stash
- 18:17or slash three slash five or you're gonna struggle like it.
- 18:23I'm very curious because Allison, and maybe it's the way
- 18:26I ordered it, I don't think so.
- 18:28Allison had no problem keeping the three movies that she liked.
- 18:33Ryan: Okay.
- 18:34Kearns: Hmm.
- 18:35Is it random again, the order.
- 18:37Jon: it is random ordered again, and it's, and it's themed and I'm
- 18:42gonna up the stakes with the theme.
- 18:44If within the first three movies you can guess the theme, I will
- 18:48let you stash an extra movie.
- 18:51Kearns: No
- 18:52Ryan: okay.
- 18:53Jon: Yeah,
- 18:53Kearns: This is definitely the most eighties cover I've seen in a while.
- 18:57Jon: I love this cover.
- 18:59It's so, it's so American Gothic Zombie.
- 19:03Kearns: It's pretty cool.
- 19:06Pretty
- 19:06Ryan: Hmm.
- 19:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:08Kearns: The Mohawk too and everything.
- 19:10Um, all right, so we got, we got a theme to consider here.
- 19:14They're back
- 19:15Ryan: Eliminate unlimited guesses or are we eliminate.
- 19:19Jon: One guest per movie through the first three.
- 19:22Ryan: Okay.
- 19:25Hmm.
- 19:26Jon: movie number one is obviously Return of the Living Dead.
- 19:30Kearns: Dun dun.
- 19:34Ryan: Hmm.
- 19:35Kearns: What could it be?
- 19:36Movies from 1985.
- 19:40Jon: Oh, Kerns gets an extra one.
- 19:42Ryan: I was gonna say.
- 19:43Nice.
- 19:45Jon: They are all 1985.
- 19:47So Kerns, you get to keep, you get to stash.
- 19:49Four of these.
- 19:50Sorry, Ryan.
- 19:51Kearns: Fuck it.
- 19:52Ryan.
- 19:55Ryan: All right.
- 19:56Alright.
- 19:57Right.
- 19:58Kearns: to, can I choose to give up my extra one so that
- 20:01he has to slash an extra one?
- 20:03Ryan: so messed up.
- 20:05No, keep it, keep it
- 20:08Jon: you know what?
- 20:10I will allow it.
- 20:13Kearns: no, I can't do
- 20:14Ryan: okay.
- 20:15Oh, no, no, no.
- 20:16Let's do it.
- 20:17'cause I am slashing return of the living debt, then let's do it.
- 20:21Jon: man.
- 20:22Kearns: I like return to living dead, but I might have to slash it too.
- 20:24Even if I get
- 20:25Ryan: I do.
- 20:26Kearns: I might have to slash it.
- 20:27Ryan: Uh, and you got an extra one.
- 20:29You, there's, there's, there's no excuse for you not to like stash it.
- 20:33Kearns: I will stash it.
- 20:34I'm not gonna screw you over and I'm going to stash this.
- 20:38Those are two things that are happening.
- 20:40Jon: That means I don't have to drive to your house and punch you in the mouth.
- 20:43Kearns: Good.
- 20:44I do love this movie.
- 20:47Jon: Number two.
- 20:47Kearns: a while.
- 20:49Ryan: Stash.
- 20:50Kearns: course we got Romero.
- 20:51Yeah.
- 20:51I have to stash this too.
- 20:53Ryan: this can,
- 20:53Kearns: Day
- 20:54Ryan: here, here's a good question.
- 20:55Kerns, do you prefer Dawn or Day more?
- 20:59Kearns: Day.
- 21:00Jon: Oh, you guys?
- 21:01Ryan: Yeah.
- 21:02Jon: No.
- 21:02Nope.
- 21:03Dawn.
- 21:04Dawn is the far superior zombie movie.
- 21:07Kearns: I just said that to piss John off.
- 21:09Ryan: what would you,
- 21:10Jon: Far, far superior.
- 21:12Ryan: It
- 21:12Jon: love day.
- 21:13I love Day of the Ed.
- 21:15Dawn is way back.
- 21:16Kearns: is super fun because you have that whole like fantasy
- 21:19built into it for me anyway.
- 21:20I've always fantasized about being stuck in the mall when I
- 21:23Jon: Exactly.
- 21:25Exactly.
- 21:25That's where it came from.
- 21:27Kearns: Yeah.
- 21:28Ryan: Fair.
- 21:28Jon: That's where it came from.
- 21:29That's the point I made this afternoon, Ryan.
- 21:32Ryan: How
- 21:33Jon: You didn't, you didn't fanny
- 21:35Ryan: How easy.
- 21:36Jon: it.
- 21:36It wasn't until other people came along.
- 21:39Ryan: The bikers and all that.
- 21:41Kearns: in real life, everything got screwed up by the idiots.
- 21:44Jon: And it would've been okay if they had just stayed up in their little
- 21:48safe space and let the bikers trash them all and then recaptured it.
- 21:55Ryan: True.
- 21:56Jon: It was a,
- 21:57Ryan: they had to
- 21:57Jon: a fatal mistake, but they were safe.
- 22:01They, they were perfectly safe if they had stayed in that office.
- 22:05Ryan: They're safe in a bunker too underground.
- 22:08Kearns: And
- 22:08Jon: Where they though were they though?
- 22:10Ryan: I'll till that got messed up.
- 22:12But that, that happens
- 22:14Jon: But
- 22:14Ryan: the film.
- 22:15Jon: No, but, but,
- 22:16Kearns: come out?
- 22:17Jon: uh, 78.
- 22:19Kearns: Okay.
- 22:20Okay.
- 22:21Ryan: Same year
- 22:22Jon: I,
- 22:22Ryan: Crazy.
- 22:23Jon: the bunker, the underground bunker was never safe.
- 22:26'cause they were keeping zombies down there.
- 22:29Ryan: Uh, for experiments they were in control, kind, kind.
- 22:33Jon: Were they?
- 22:35Ryan: They created,
- 22:35Jon: 'cause they, they sure lost control of that in a hurry.
- 22:39Ryan: Alright.
- 22:40Kearns: long time before I saw this movie in the non TV edit
- 22:43version, by the way, a long time.
- 22:47Jon: We're about to get.
- 22:48Kearns: uncut ones on a MC at
- 22:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:50Kearns: night,
- 22:51Ryan: Yep.
- 22:51Jon: We're about to get really far off the topic here if we keep talking about this,
- 22:56Kearns: Yeah, good point.
- 22:57Jon: because I will,
- 22:58Ryan: Romero.
- 22:58Jon: I'll,
- 22:59Kearns: listen.
- 23:00Jon: I
- 23:00Kearns: aren't listening to us, um, because they hate horror.
- 23:04Jon: mm-hmm.
- 23:04Kearns: talk about this as much as you want.
- 23:08Jon: This this'll be a four hour episode if I get going right now.
- 23:11Kearns: Well, it's my fault 'cause I literally said it to get you going.
- 23:14So
- 23:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:16Kearns: knowing
- 23:16Jon: I mean,
- 23:17Ryan: I am okay with it.
- 23:18Jon: and, I will give you another reason why it's better to be
- 23:21in the mall than underground.
- 23:22How many escaped passages were there underground?
- 23:27Ryan: Um,
- 23:27Kearns: Wait,
- 23:28Ryan: if I, no, they had
- 23:29Jon: 1 1 1.
- 23:32Slow ass elevator.
- 23:34Ryan: They had the elevator, but they also had the, um, the pathway with multiple
- 23:39Jon: the stairs, they, they had stairs like that,
- 23:43Ryan: that works.
- 23:44Jon: that one, those one at a time rung ladder into the cement.
- 23:48Things like you're not, you are not safe under there with nobody up top watching
- 23:55the fence, like everybody's down below.
- 23:58So even every time you go up, you have no sense of whether you're walking into
- 24:02a zombie hoard, whether they knock down the fence and they're inside waiting
- 24:07for you to just pop your head up.
- 24:10No, you're much safer in the mall.
- 24:12Ryan: I mean,
- 24:13Kearns: Dog in it.
- 24:14Jon: Yep.
- 24:15Ryan: but they were able to safely get to the helicopter, know, the fence
- 24:19was, you know, reinforced as best as
- 24:22Jon: I mean,
- 24:24Ryan: Again, there was a mess up, and that's what
- 24:26Jon: a few of them, a few of them were able to, but the mess
- 24:30up was always gonna happen.
- 24:31'cause you're keeping zombies down below.
- 24:33Ryan: True.
- 24:34I mean, they were, the, the whole idea though is like, how are
- 24:36we going to help them adapt or getting on, getting onto our level?
- 24:41Because by that time after Dawn day is like the whole zombie apocalypses happened
- 24:47Jon: But that's not e, that's not even what Dr. Frankenstein was
- 24:51supposed to be doing down there.
- 24:53Ryan: Oh
- 24:53Jon: He was supposed to be trying to figure out a way to stop
- 24:56them, not a way to adapt them.
- 24:58Ryan: Correct.
- 24:58But that's what makes it so unique and what makes Romero unique is like if
- 25:04you look into the deeper psychology is like, how do we work along
- 25:08with them instead of against them?
- 25:11Jon: Well, well that, I mean that, that's a theme from night
- 25:14Ryan: Yep.
- 25:15Jon: really through land because then diary is sort of concurrent
- 25:20to night and you know, survival is sort of a whole different thing.
- 25:25But those four, from Night to Land, you get the evolution that then continues
- 25:31into the book that came out after he died, that was finished by Daniel Kraus.
- 25:36You get the evolution of the zombie.
- 25:40Ryan: I am gonna have to read the book.
- 25:43Jon: The book is, I love the book.
- 25:44I know there are people who don't.
- 25:46I loved it just, I mean, because
- 25:48Ryan: You're a Romero fan though.
- 25:50Jon: yeah, I, you, you, you mainly just have to stamp his name on something
- 25:55and I'm gonna wanna see it or read it.
- 25:59Kearns: You're, I would dare to say you're a Romero Super fan.
- 26:03Jon: Yeah, probably,
- 26:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:05Jon: yeah, probably if I, had kids, at least one of them would be named George.
- 26:08Ryan: the other
- 26:09Jon: At least one.
- 26:10At least one.
- 26:11Yeah.
- 26:11There might be a Romero.
- 26:13There might.
- 26:13Yeah.
- 26:16Yeah, it's very likely.
- 26:18Kearns: We
- 26:18Jon: All right.
- 26:19Kearns: John seed
- 26:21Jon: Please don't, nobody needs that.
- 26:25Kearns: for, we need to see these children named after George A. Romero.
- 26:29Who's the, which kid's gonna be named a.
- 26:34Ryan: That's the third one.
- 26:36Jon: The middle one, obviously.
- 26:38Ryan: Fair.
- 26:38George.
- 26:39A Romero?
- 26:41Kearns: Alright,
- 26:41Jon: this is my son, George.
- 26:42This is my son, a. And this is my son Romero.
- 26:47Kearns: now I
- 26:48Jon: All right.
- 26:48Kearns: two of these.
- 26:49John Ryan has stashed two as well,
- 26:52Jon: No, Ryan.
- 26:52Ryan's one and one because Ryan's slashed return
- 26:56Ryan: Yes.
- 26:59Kearns: Oh, Freddy's revenge.
- 27:02Look at that.
- 27:02Awful, awful cover.
- 27:04Ryan: That,
- 27:04Jon: Yeah.
- 27:06Kearns: Warner Brothers, you
- 27:08Ryan: mean.
- 27:08Kearns: big shits.
- 27:10Ryan: They got like the biggest part of the movie, which is cool.
- 27:13The bus, which really opens it, other than like, mean the, the movies,
- 27:20it's an okay movie, but there's so much controversy behind it because
- 27:25of like the subtle hints that they were putting throughout it, which was
- 27:30questionable at the time and stuff.
- 27:32Jon: Yeah, it's, it's the L-B-G-T-Q nightmare and that that made a certain
- 27:39group of people angry and it continues to make that same certain group angry.
- 27:44Kearns: that is a thing.
- 27:46but for reasons other than that, I'm slashing it
- 27:50Jon: Yeah.
- 27:50I mean, I, and for reasons other than, than that theme, it's definitely not
- 27:55high on my list of nightmare movies.
- 27:58Ryan: No, and they had something special, like the whole idea of him
- 28:02coming into the real world and mixing
- 28:04Jon: Yeah.
- 28:05Ryan: into it and like kinda possessing the main character,
- 28:09but was just initiated wrong.
- 28:11I feel like they pushed a lot where they didn't have to push
- 28:15Kearns: It
- 28:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:16Kearns: It was just, I didn't enjoy it.
- 28:17That's the, that's all that I got for
- 28:19Jon: Yeah.
- 28:19Yeah.
- 28:20Kearns: I
- 28:20Ryan: I,
- 28:20Kearns: any like, really intelligent way to articulate it.
- 28:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:23Ryan: it.
- 28:24I have it for the collection.
- 28:25Jon: I mean, I have the whole collection.
- 28:27I own it, but,
- 28:29Ryan: I'll watch it
- 28:29Kearns: got
- 28:30Ryan: once in a blue moon.
- 28:32Jon: so Ryan, you're slashing this also.
- 28:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:36I just, I, I love Freddy, but you know, I'll take it over.
- 28:42Freddy's uh, debt though, I'll say that.
- 28:46Kearns: kind of trees.
- 28:47Are those, this cover really bothers me.
- 28:49What kind of
- 28:50Jon: Right.
- 28:50Kearns: are those?
- 28:51Those are like trees you see in the African Savannah.
- 28:54Jon: Yeah.
- 28:56Kearns: Why?
- 28:57Jon: Yeah.
- 28:58Yeah.
- 28:59It's not the greatest cover for this,
- 29:02Kearns: No,
- 29:02Jon: one I could find that was a good size.
- 29:04Ryan: He
- 29:05Jon: next.
- 29:05Kearns: I'm not criticizing you for choosing
- 29:07Ryan: no,
- 29:07Kearns: criticizing them for creating it.
- 29:09Ryan: he looks like
- 29:10Jon: Yeah, no, this is,
- 29:11Ryan: Like, do you
- 29:12Jon: he
- 29:12Ryan: ear?
- 29:12His ear is pointed.
- 29:14He looks like a demon elf
- 29:15Kearns: It looks
- 29:16Jon: sort,
- 29:16Kearns: was stamped on.
- 29:18Jon: sort of looks like what Freddy Krueger would, could have looked like if
- 29:23they didn't do a good job with the makeup.
- 29:25Kearns: Yep.
- 29:26Fair.
- 29:26Ryan: And look at his hand.
- 29:28His hand has
- 29:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:29Ryan: the knives coming from his fingertips.
- 29:33All right, we
- 29:33Jon: I mean,
- 29:34Kearns: Yeah,
- 29:35Jon: not Wolverine.
- 29:36Ryan: No, no, he's not.
- 29:37No.
- 29:38Kearns: the most glaring thing on there.
- 29:39You're right.
- 29:40Ryan: Like
- 29:41Jon: right.
- 29:42Ryan: Freddie.
- 29:42Jon: number four.
- 29:44Ryan: Oh.
- 29:46Kearns: I love Goey so much.
- 29:48That was 85.
- 29:50Jon: Yep.
- 29:52Kearns: How scared were you to sit on a toilet when you were little John?
- 29:55Ryan: Very,
- 29:55Kearns: you were too old
- 29:56Ryan: very,
- 29:57Jon: Yeah.
- 29:58Kearns: You weren't like scared, but
- 29:59Jon: Yeah.
- 29:59I wasn't,
- 30:00Kearns: saw this at Blockbuster
- 30:01Ryan: very, I didn't want
- 30:02Jon: I was scared.
- 30:04I, I was scared of the toilet after Jaws, but, you know.
- 30:08Ryan: I'm sorry.
- 30:08That's not funny.
- 30:09Kearns: No, that's
- 30:10Ryan: No, that's horrible.
- 30:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:14Kearns: 'cause of Orca.
- 30:15They killed his wife.
- 30:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:18Kearns: Oh man, I How do you slash gies?
- 30:22Ryan: Just by flushing it down the toilet.
- 30:24That's what I'm doing.
- 30:26Kearns: Oh, it's so much fun
- 30:28Ryan: I know.
- 30:29Kearns: such a blast.
- 30:30Ryan: Yeah, but he's evil.
- 30:32Kearns: He's wearing suspenders.
- 30:34He is evil,
- 30:35Ryan: Oh no.
- 30:35I'm talking
- 30:36Jon: Me, me or the gey.
- 30:37Kearns: 85,
- 30:38Ryan: both the
- 30:39Jon: listen, li a again, again, random order.
- 30:43I have nothing to do with the order.
- 30:44I just picked the movies.
- 30:46Ryan: why I'm saying like, I dunno, what's
- 30:48Kearns: screw.
- 30:49Jon: Nice.
- 30:49Kearns: it.
- 30:50Jon: All right.
- 30:50Ryan: you got four.
- 30:52Jon: Ryan, you have two sts left and Kerns has one even with the extras
- 31:00Ryan: Oh,
- 31:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:01I've been very liberal
- 31:03Ryan: okay.
- 31:04Kearns: with my STEs.
- 31:07Ooh,
- 31:08Ryan: This came up in conversation today too.
- 31:10It's an underrated.
- 31:11Jon: sure did.
- 31:13Ryan: it's underrated film.
- 31:14It's a fun,
- 31:15Jon: Yeah.
- 31:15Ryan: film.
- 31:16Jon: I love this one.
- 31:20Kearns: Look
- 31:20Jon: Yep.
- 31:21Kearns: man, that that house is literally in the town I live in.
- 31:25That house is up on a hill as you're heading towards, Hmm.
- 31:29Home Depot this area.
- 31:31You guys should understand that.
- 31:33Jon: I got you.
- 31:34Ryan: Yep.
- 31:34Kearns: Hey, is that Norm?
- 31:36Ryan: That's norm.
- 31:37Jon: Norm Norm's in this and bull from night court.
- 31:40Bull from night court plays the The corpse guy.
- 31:43Ryan: Wait, are you, um,
- 31:45Kearns: Oh, I can see it actually in his
- 31:47Jon: Yeah.
- 31:47Richard Ma.
- 31:48Ryan: Richard two phase?
- 31:50Yep.
- 31:52Jon: Bull from Night Court.
- 31:54Ryan: Oh,
- 31:54Jon: Two Face
- 31:55Ryan: two
- 31:56Jon: Bull
- 31:56Ryan: Batman.
- 31:57The animated series
- 31:58Kearns: from Night Court.
- 31:59Harry,
- 32:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:01Kearns: I love Night Court,
- 32:03Jon: I Lovett.
- 32:04Ryan: that, that came up today, this week too.
- 32:06Actually.
- 32:06I, this came,
- 32:07Kearns: did.
- 32:08Ryan: yeah, our, it came up this week with, uh, my wife.
- 32:10We were talking about night court now.
- 32:13We love
- 32:13Jon: It's such a good show.
- 32:15Ryan: Now they're underrated.
- 32:16Gem.
- 32:16That was the time where they, what was it?
- 32:18Night court wings and chairs all in one shot.
- 32:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:23See,
- 32:24Kearns: and just
- 32:25Ryan: Yep.
- 32:26Jon: that's the thing.
- 32:26I like having, being old enough to watch night court when it was originally
- 32:31on, it was properly rated, it's just people forgot how good it was.
- 32:37Kearns: Hmm.
- 32:37Ryan: it's true.
- 32:38Kearns: You forgot too, like there was.
- 32:41Uh, not, I wouldn't say soap opera sort of vibe to it, but there was
- 32:44a building of relationships and
- 32:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:49Kearns: show.
- 32:50Jon: Yeah.
- 32:51Like you had the, the story of the week.
- 32:53You didn't have to watch every week to keep up with a plot, but every
- 32:57week there were little developments in the relationships of the characters.
- 33:01Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 33:04What's the name of the lawyer?
- 33:05Um, the actor who placed the lawyer.
- 33:08He's
- 33:08Jon: John Roquette
- 33:09Kearns: Yeah, that's the one.
- 33:11Jon: is John, John qut and Marky Post.
- 33:15Kearns: Marky Post.
- 33:16Better than Marky Mark.
- 33:17I say
- 33:18Jon: I loved Marky Post.
- 33:20Kearns: way.
- 33:20Ryan: Yeah.
- 33:21I'm
- 33:21Jon: kind of figured you kind of have to.
- 33:22Kearns: I have to.
- 33:23I have to, bro.
- 33:24I'm down to one left.
- 33:25Ryan: Norm.
- 33:27No more
- 33:27Jon: Sorry, norm.
- 33:28I'm sorry.
- 33:29Bull.
- 33:30Kearns: where we'll find him.
- 33:32Ryan: everybody knows your name.
- 33:34Kearns: knows your name.
- 33:35Jon: All right.
- 33:36Ryan: do and wait, what
- 33:40Jon: Ladies and gentlemen, silver bullet.
- 33:43Kearns: Bullet two
- 33:44Ryan: It's
- 33:45Kearns: How many more do
- 33:45Ryan: hold.
- 33:46Kearns: after
- 33:46Ryan: Wait a minute.
- 33:46Is that
- 33:47Jon: This is, there are three left.
- 33:49Kearns: Oh, I can't after this.
- 33:51There's three left.
- 33:52Jon: This is no the, including this.
- 33:54There's three
- 33:55Ryan: that's why you've,
- 33:56Kearns: have,
- 33:56Ryan: you mentioned half these movies today, brother.
- 33:59I'm just saying
- 33:59Jon: I
- 34:00Ryan: you
- 34:00Jon: I did, I did, but it was coincidence.
- 34:03It was the person we were, talking to.
- 34:05Driving that more than me.
- 34:07Ryan: I thought you were landing Easter eggs and I'm like, damn it.
- 34:10He gave me
- 34:11Jon: No.
- 34:11Kearns: Savage in this,
- 34:13Ryan: Oh no.
- 34:14Uh, Corey Ham.
- 34:16Kearns: Corey Ham is the kid.
- 34:17And then the Gary Busey.
- 34:18Obviously
- 34:19Ryan: I thought Gary Busey was in the wheelchair asking for buttered
- 34:21sausage, but that wasn't true.
- 34:25Kearns: he's now.
- 34:26Jon: that would've been weird if Gary Busey was playing a kid in 1985.
- 34:30Ryan: I.
- 34:30Kearns: How's Gary Busey still alive.
- 34:32Can we talk about
- 34:32Ryan: He
- 34:33Jon: an interesting question.
- 34:35Ryan: saw and
- 34:36Kearns: lot of cocaine.
- 34:37Ryan: had an Instagram video recently and it just looks, he looks like
- 34:41Skeletor and I'm not trying to be funny, but he looks like Skeletor.
- 34:46Kearns: the
- 34:46Ryan: It's bad.
- 34:47Kearns: face with his big gangly teeth and stuff.
- 34:49It accentuates it as he's getting more gaunt
- 34:51Ryan: I'm,
- 34:51Kearns: it, he just, he's ghastly.
- 34:53Ryan: it's the reconstruction surgery he had after that motorcycle accident
- 34:56that's like really protruding his face out, all that surgery.
- 35:02Kearns: Hope he's comfortable as he searches for butter sausage.
- 35:08Ryan: Oh man.
- 35:09Kearns: I gotta slash it because I just don't know what you got down, coming
- 35:12down the pipe and if there's something amazing next I'm gonna be upset.
- 35:16Ryan: Yeah.
- 35:17But there might not be, you know what I'm gonna,
- 35:19Kearns: liked
- 35:20Ryan: I'm gonna stash it, stashing it.
- 35:23am, I'm gonna stash.
- 35:24Super bullet.
- 35:25'cause it gives me, like,
- 35:26Kearns: me
- 35:26Ryan: it gives me a two for two.
- 35:28I don't want like go in blind, not tonight.
- 35:31Jon: All right.
- 35:32So you each have one of each left with two movies to go.
- 35:38Let's see,
- 35:40Ryan: Oh God, yes.
- 35:41I'm, oh, wait a minute.
- 35:42Hold on.
- 35:43But then what else is there?
- 35:45What else came out in 1985?
- 35:46Kearns: we gotta think of what else came out in 1985.
- 35:48That's a horror movie.
- 35:50Oh,
- 35:51Jon: 1985 was a good year.
- 35:52I just picked eight random ones.
- 35:54There were, there was a lot of cool stuff in 85.
- 35:58Ryan: Dandridge.
- 35:59I'll take it.
- 36:00Freight night.
- 36:00You know what, going back,
- 36:01Kearns: And this is random order too,
- 36:04Jon: Yep.
- 36:04Kearns: like leaving us with some evil thing.
- 36:07Jon: I mean.
- 36:07Kearns: take fright Night.
- 36:09Jon: I still might be, in fact now, now that I remember what's last.
- 36:14I think you're both about to be severely disappointed in your choices.
- 36:18Ryan: Why, what's.
- 36:19Jon: I would,
- 36:20Kearns: of them,
- 36:21Jon: I I,
- 36:22Kearns: probably just
- 36:23Jon: I, would even say you will regret your choices and that you
- 36:27have made bad choices because movie number eight is re animator.
- 36:33Ryan: Oh,
- 36:37Kearns: I do love, love craft, dude.
- 36:39Ryan: re animator's so good too.
- 36:41But you know what, uh, you know what?
- 36:43I would trade Silver Bullet for re animator, but I'll, I'll
- 36:46accept my, I'll accept my choices.
- 36:49Kearns: I would do Friday night for,
- 36:50Ryan: Nah, I
- 36:51Kearns: do Friday night for Ator.
- 36:53Ryan: keep Friday
- 36:53Jon: You wouldn't, you wouldn't go, you wouldn't go gies for re animator.
- 36:57Kearns: No, no.
- 36:59I love the Ghoulies.
- 37:00Ghoulies is my extra, that's my bonus movie.
- 37:03So that's untouchable.
- 37:04Ryan: That's my sinning, my sinful movie.
- 37:06Jon: That's fair.
- 37:07Ri I, I think, Ryan, you're lucky I didn't institute the rule.
- 37:10I'm thinking about with Stash or slash
- 37:13Ryan: Good.
- 37:13Jon: that you can no long, you can no longer use the movie
- 37:17you slash in your top five.
- 37:19Ryan: mean, I would be fine with it.
- 37:21Kearns: of
- 37:21Ryan: Yeah.
- 37:21I told him I'd be fine with it.
- 37:23I mean
- 37:24Jon: That would be rough.
- 37:24That would
- 37:26Ryan: doesn't relate.
- 37:27This doesn't relate to my top five tonight, which I'm
- 37:29Jon: mm-hmm.
- 37:31Kearns: It works
- 37:31Ryan: for
- 37:32Jon: but I'll get it eventually.
- 37:34Kearns: good game.
- 37:35Jon: Yeah.
- 37:36Kearns: game, gentlemen.
- 37:37Jon: stru, I struggled finding a game for this week because, I
- 37:41mean, like, there's a lot of stuff, but literally and figuratively
- 37:45about the, the movie, the stuff,
- 37:47Kearns: Nice tie in right there.
- 37:49Jon: but it's, there's not a lot of, of ways to link it.
- 37:54Kearns: Were you just living, if you were in 85 and you were 17 to 25
- 37:58years old or something, were you just living at the theater there in 1985?
- 38:02Jon: have to have been right.
- 38:03Ryan: Yeah.
- 38:04Jon: You have to have been.
- 38:05Kearns: movies come out and not just like, you know, um, stack on top of each other
- 38:11Jon: Yeah,
- 38:12Kearns: ruin
- 38:12Jon: I, I, I'm sure they did.
- 38:14I'm, I'm sure like one of those people who like posts pictures of, you know, like,
- 38:21like movie billboards from old times.
- 38:25I'm sure there's ones that are just insane from 85.
- 38:29'cause I left out stuff.
- 38:31There was Friday the 13th, five Howling two, life Force warning size.
- 38:36So many good movies came out in 85.
- 38:40Teen Wolf
- 38:42Ryan: team.
- 38:42Kearns: Wolf is probably
- 38:43Ryan: Okay.
- 38:43Kearns: box office.
- 38:44Out of
- 38:44Jon: probably,
- 38:45Kearns: so far,
- 38:47Jon: Friday the 13th probably was PR up there too.
- 38:50The, the Friday the 13th movies raked in dough.
- 38:53Ryan: they did.
- 38:54Even
- 38:54Kearns: adjacent,
- 38:55Ryan: if, well, there was no Jason spoiler, not for par
- 38:59Jon: Yeah.
- 38:59Five
- 39:00Kearns: three?
- 39:01Jon: The Nonja one.
- 39:02Yeah.
- 39:02Ryan: it
- 39:03Jon: Well,
- 39:04Ryan: but not Jason.
- 39:06Jon: there's a Jason, but it's not Jason.
- 39:08It's
- 39:08Ryan: mask, not a red mask.
- 39:10Jon: is a mess.
- 39:11Ryan: like
- 39:12Jon: Five is a mess.
- 39:12Ryan: I do
- 39:13Jon: It's all right.
- 39:14But five is five is way down my list of Friday movies.
- 39:19Ryan: But um, you were mentioning how you can release so many good
- 39:24horror movies or the I idea of so many horror movies is like, it wasn't
- 39:29expensive at that time and every
- 39:32Jon: No.
- 39:32Ryan: was competing with one another, so they
- 39:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:36Ryan: every year or even throughout the year, horror movie
- 39:38after horror movie just to p
- 39:39Jon: Yeah.
- 39:40Ryan: out.
- 39:40And that's what makes it prime.
- 39:42I feel like the entire eighties with horror or starting with the seventies
- 39:46and building up to the eighties,
- 39:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:49Ryan: it's like nonstop, but also look at the ticket prices at the time.
- 39:53Jon: Yeah.
- 39:54Yeah.
- 39:55And like none of the movies that I put in that game were particularly big budget.
- 40:01Ryan: A silver bullet?
- 40:02Jon: They were all pretty, silver Bullet wasn't that big a budget, like, I mean,
- 40:06think about it, like a lot of that is not,
- 40:08Kearns: small town.
- 40:09Jon: yeah.
- 40:10Ryan: Gary Busey.
- 40:11Kearns: of setting.
- 40:11Ryan: Cory
- 40:12Jon: Day of the Dead was Romero's most expensive zombie movie to that point.
- 40:17But I mean, he made Night on Nothing and he made Day on, on
- 40:22Dawn on just a little bit more.
- 40:23Dawn's budget was only 600,000.
- 40:26Ryan: And then how much,
- 40:27Kearns: even rent the mall?
- 40:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:29Kearns: 600,000
- 40:31Jon: Yeah.
- 40:32I mean, a lot of after hour stuff there.
- 40:37Kearns: I suppose.
- 40:38Yeah.
- 40:39Ryan: which makes me wonder how he did the daytime scenes, I mean, without lighting,
- 40:43because of that time without CGI,
- 40:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:47Ryan: he had a, they had to close it off for him for at least a couple
- 40:50Jon: Early mornings.
- 40:51Yeah, early mornings.
- 40:54Kearns: we could look into that.
- 40:55People would want to hear about that from when we
- 40:57Jon: Well,
- 40:57Kearns: these movies.
- 40:58'cause we haven't done a
- 40:58Jon: well,
- 40:59Kearns: shockingly enough.
- 41:01Ryan: Not
- 41:01Jon: Dawn is coming up in May, so,
- 41:03Kearns: There you go, John.
- 41:04It's
- 41:04Ryan: The
- 41:05Jon: and then
- 41:06Ryan: Original, not
- 41:07Jon: Dawn is coming up in May.
- 41:09Yep.
- 41:09Kearns: the original, we could do the re we can do the, um, I don't
- 41:12even know if I'd call it a remake.
- 41:13What would we call the new one?
- 41:14New Dawn,
- 41:15Ryan: dog.
- 41:17Not the Twilight movie.
- 41:18Kearns: of the Dead.
- 41:19Later on in life.
- 41:20We can do that and
- 41:21Jon: yeah.
- 41:22Kearns: Talk about how much we hate McKay Pfeiffer in that movie
- 41:25Ryan: Real quick Day.
- 41:26The dead
- 41:27Kearns: Yes.
- 41:28Ryan: with 3.5 to $4 million budget.
- 41:31Jon: Yep.
- 41:32Ryan: insane.
- 41:34Jon: Yeah, like that's.
- 41:35Ryan: nothing
- 41:36Kearns: 1985, so what's that worth today if you wanna cry
- 41:40Jon: That, that's the point I was making with you when we were a couple
- 41:45weeks ago, when we were arguing Craven or Romero and how you could make all
- 41:50six Romero zombie movies for less than it cost to make scream four
- 41:55Ryan: True, but I would
- 41:57Jon: and then make
- 41:57Ryan: Craven over Peter Jackson.
- 41:59Kearns: isn't it?
- 42:00Jon: Yeah, then make three more of them.
- 42:03And to get to 40 million, like the average Romero land was the most expensive.
- 42:08And they estimate, I think that was between 15 and 19 million.
- 42:12Ryan: Ooh.
- 42:12Kearns: Wow.
- 42:14Jon: And a lot of that goes into star power.
- 42:16'cause he has, that's where he has names.
- 42:20He's got Leg Zamo, he is got Hopper, he's got, um, that British
- 42:25dude who almost became big.
- 42:28Ryan: Simon Clark.
- 42:29Jon: Whose name I'm blanking on right now.
- 42:31Yeah, he's got, um, you know, I'm sure it didn't cost a lot, but there's
- 42:36the, um, Simon Peg, Nick Frost cameo
- 42:40Kearns: Oh,
- 42:41Ryan: probably love doing that.
- 42:43I was gonna say 15
- 42:44Jon: I'm sure.
- 42:45'cause I,
- 42:47Ryan: Not
- 42:47Jon: yeah.
- 42:48Kearns: cameos in the stuff this week's film?
- 42:52Jon: there are actually, there are two, uncredited Cameos.
- 42:56Three.
- 42:56Kearns: hear about those.
- 42:57That's
- 42:58Jon: So
- 42:58Kearns: get
- 42:59Jon: the supermarket clerk in the scene that, Jason destroys all
- 43:03the stuff is Eric Bagian, who's a pretty big, big name there.
- 43:09you get, when you get the factory tour, uh, she just
- 43:13happened to be on set with dad.
- 43:14You get a cameo from Mira Sorvino.
- 43:17Ryan: Nice.
- 43:17Kearns: that's Mira Sono
- 43:19Jon: Yep.
- 43:20Ryan: Okay.
- 43:20Kearns: met her,
- 43:21Ryan: I.
- 43:21Kearns: way.
- 43:22And, uh, the capacity as a, of a fan at a con when I was signing books.
- 43:26And she is the most lovely, wonderful, nice lady.
- 43:31Jon: I love when that happens.
- 43:32I love meeting people at those things who are just so nice.
- 43:36Kearns: making any money off me, and she was super nice to
- 43:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:39Kearns: like, cool, you're nice.
- 43:40I like you.
- 43:41And then John Cusack looked like
- 43:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:43Kearns: of liver cancer
- 43:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:45Kearns: my God.
- 43:46Oh.
- 43:46Jon: I,
- 43:47Ryan: He was
- 43:47Jon: I had one, like, one like that at Chiller too.
- 43:51one of the years I, we went to Chiller, Brian O'Halloran, Dante from Clerks was
- 43:56there, and if you go online, they like, back at that point in time, there were
- 44:01terrible stories of people who met him and he was just nasty and whatever.
- 44:05He couldn't have been a nicer guy.
- 44:07He, he talked to us and quoted lines from us, signed stuff for free.
- 44:13He was just like the nicest guy in the world.
- 44:15Like Yeah.
- 44:17And like I had heard, I had seen stuff that was kind of negative about
- 44:21him and it just couldn't have been more opposite, but back to the stuff.
- 44:26Kearns: I was like, I've seen this stuff, now we could wax and wane on that.
- 44:30That'll we'll you guys into, uh, more of John's convention
- 44:35stories as we go on in life.
- 44:38And my very few that I have.
- 44:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:41Ryan: You forgot about Patrick Dempsey.
- 44:44Jon: Oh yeah, I've, yeah, I did.
- 44:45'cause we got distracted on waxing poetic about convention meetings.
- 44:51Yeah.
- 44:51Patrick Dempsey is the illicit stuff buyer at the end.
- 44:55Once the stuff is outlawed as anything that's outlawed, you get a black market.
- 45:00Ryan: Yep.
- 45:01Kearns: Yeah, he is like, Hey man, you got more stuff.
- 45:05He does that Patrick Dempsey,
- 45:08Jon: Yeah.
- 45:09Kearns: very young, Patrick Dempsey
- 45:10Ryan: Until he
- 45:11Jon: Yep,
- 45:12Ryan: Dr.
- 45:13Jon: yep.
- 45:13Kearns: ER
- 45:14Jon: Yeah.
- 45:15He did his residency after the stuff.
- 45:18Kearns: because he had to cure the addiction.
- 45:20Ryan: Exactly.
- 45:23Kearns: they don't get into
- 45:24Jon: Yep.
- 45:24Started with a diversion program and he became a, a doctor from there.
- 45:28Kearns: Like how does that work?
- 45:29Ryan: I would think they died.
- 45:30Kearns: in them?
- 45:32Jon: I don't know, does it?
- 45:33Kearns: well it's true.
- 45:34It does all come, it does come out of a lot of them at some points
- 45:38Jon: Yeah.
- 45:39But, when it's out, I kind of think you're gone at that point.
- 45:44Kearns: Yeah, I think you're done.
- 45:45Jon: Yeah.
- 45:45Kearns: addicted to
- 45:46Jon: I don't think there's coming back, I don't think there's coming back from
- 45:49being a stuffy, I think a stuffy is like being a zombie at that point.
- 45:53Ryan: mean, how it rips through your mouth.
- 45:55It like rips the whole jawline open,
- 45:57Jon: Yeah.
- 45:58Ryan: you're not
- 45:59Jon: that's like
- 45:59Kearns: interesting because it could easily squeeze out normally
- 46:02Jon: mm-hmm.
- 46:03No, it's,
- 46:04Kearns: way.
- 46:04Jon: yeah, it's going for max discomfort
- 46:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:08Jon: its escape and it, yeah.
- 46:10It hollows them out.
- 46:12Like everybody, they fight after they've, vomited the stuff out of
- 46:16them is just like a hollow shell.
- 46:19Ryan: They are.
- 46:19Which is,
- 46:20Kearns: collapse.
- 46:21Ryan: which is cool.
- 46:22Special effects.
- 46:22Each time they did a punch and you'd see the face
- 46:25Jon: Yeah.
- 46:26Kearns: at that point we find out the stuff is d is eat feeding on them then
- 46:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:30Yep.
- 46:31Yep.
- 46:31It's feeding on them and turning them into stuffies
- 46:38Ryan: Stuffies.
- 46:40Jon: stuff.
- 46:40They even could, they could, that's not my word.
- 46:42They call 'em stuffies in the movie too.
- 46:46The stuffies.
- 46:48I, but like, I mean that whole, that whole mouth element and the
- 46:54way they, they create that is just a wonder of practical effects too.
- 46:58Kearns: Kind of neat.
- 47:00Jon: Now, if they did this now, they'd definitely try to CGI that
- 47:03and it wouldn't look as cool.
- 47:05Kearns: Agreed.
- 47:06Like that kind of end up with what happened with the ring,
- 47:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:10Kearns: victims in the ring.
- 47:11You see the mirror, but it doesn't look okay.
- 47:16It looks bad.
- 47:18Jon: Yeah.
- 47:19Ryan: We're talking about the og.
- 47:20Kearns: Before we Yeah, well, the
- 47:23Jon: The.
- 47:25Naomi Watt American one, not the Japanese.
- 47:28Ryan: the American, not the Japanese, the American, my bad.
- 47:31Jon: Yeah.
- 47:32Kearns: this is America.
- 47:34This is Amer, it's not like we're in Vietnam right now where half of
- 47:37our listenership is, by the way.
- 47:39Um,
- 47:41Jon: But speaking, speaking of Vietnam, we progressed to
- 47:45a Vietnam tangent in this too.
- 47:47When Mo and company go to find a Colonel Spears to help them
- 47:53conquer the factory and his, he's definitely not real army anymore.
- 47:58He's full on like, like country militia guy.
- 48:03Kearns: the movie.
- 48:03Yeah.
- 48:04He's like, I will defend America.
- 48:06Ryan: He's an interesting
- 48:07Jon: he is, he is very, and he's really another character
- 48:12that's kind of predictive of where we get to as a society,
- 48:17Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 48:18They
- 48:19Jon: the, the stuff.
- 48:19Kearns: on this.
- 48:20Jon: Yeah.
- 48:22Yeah, the, stuff kind of gets predictive about consumer culture, about people
- 48:28like Colonel Spears, about a lot of it, it, like watching the stuff now
- 48:34reminds me of how glad I am that I don't often fall in with trends
- 48:39Kearns: Yeah, call.
- 48:42You don't
- 48:42Jon: is
- 48:43Kearns: thousand POGS from the nineties and things like that hidden under your
- 48:47Ryan: Beanie Babies.
- 48:48Kearns: Me neither.
- 48:49Jon: No, no, no.
- 48:50Beanie Babies.
- 48:52No Tamagotchis.
- 48:54Kearns: we don't need to buy them.
- 48:55Jon: No Elmos, no any of that stuff.
- 49:00Kearns: Yep.
- 49:02Jon: None of the music that was trending.
- 49:05None of the, like, I, you know, I don't like, it's not an active thing that I
- 49:10do, but once people start raving about something, I'm less interested and
- 49:14that's what would happen with the stuff.
- 49:16Ryan: Yep.
- 49:17Kearns: Nice.
- 49:18Ryan: I can see that.
- 49:20Kearns: Um, is there anything else you wanna touch on from the
- 49:22movie before we hit the ratings?
- 49:25Ryan: Well, I mean, we can touch the ending and how like, kind of like, it's
- 49:30like a feel good ending, which is good.
- 49:32'cause you need a feel good ending at the end of this.
- 49:34I mean, the kids,
- 49:36Kearns: An orphan
- 49:36Ryan: yeah.
- 49:36Jason, there we go.
- 49:38Jason.
- 49:38Jon: Yeah,
- 49:39Ryan: he's.
- 49:39Jon: I mean, judging by that family, he may be better off.
- 49:44Kearns: Yeah, good point.
- 49:45Jon: They seemed like they weren't the best before the stuff.
- 49:50Kearns: you know, it's, uh, we didn't talk about yet either.
- 49:52Before we jump in, what Ryan was saying, the, the tanker truck, when he's inside of
- 49:57Ryan: Oh my
- 49:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:58Kearns: a perspective I never thought I'd have of I, as soon as he got in there, I
- 50:01was like, oh, this is gonna be horrible to
- 50:03Ryan: Claustrophobia a hundred percent.
- 50:06Kearns: with peanut butter.
- 50:06Fluff.
- 50:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:08Kearns: you.
- 50:10Nightmare Unlocked.
- 50:11Jon: Yep.
- 50:13Kearns: Ugh, another great job by this movie to make you skive.
- 50:15Ryan: if it wasn't
- 50:16Jon: Yeah.
- 50:16Ryan: it was fluff, I think I would've been fine.
- 50:19I would've just eaten it.
- 50:20All that, that's,
- 50:22Kearns: out, like, like in beer.
- 50:23What is that?
- 50:24Beer?
- 50:24Um,
- 50:25Ryan: oh, beer fest.
- 50:26Jon: Beer fest.
- 50:27Yeah, yeah,
- 50:29Ryan: they killed him.
- 50:29Jon: yeah.
- 50:30Kearns: stuff.
- 50:31Ryan: He, he's
- 50:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:35Ryan: drink by, by beer.
- 50:37I can't say the line 'cause the line's like outrageous, but,
- 50:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:42Jon: So
- 50:42Kearns: Before we do the reviews, what were you gonna say?
- 50:47Jon: we get the stuff pulled from markets and burned and destroyed and, you know,
- 50:53we get, um, Nicole, the ad executive, uh, making a statement on TV and, you
- 51:01know, people believed it like that.
- 51:03One thing I, I noted at that point in the movie was.
- 51:08I'll read exactly what I wrote in my notes today.
- 51:11We'd have deniers and the stuff would win.
- 51:14Ryan: Yep.
- 51:14Kearns: It's true though because they're, back then they didn't
- 51:17have the element of people going on social paying bot farms and stuff
- 51:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:22Kearns: to spread misinformation.
- 51:23Yeah.
- 51:24Jon: Yep.
- 51:25Yep.
- 51:25Kearns: Gnarly.
- 51:27Jon: Yeah.
- 51:28And then I, like the, full end where Mo goes back to the original stuff,
- 51:34executive and one of the snack food executives that hired him at the
- 51:38beginning and they, they're like, oh look, we we're marketing the taste.
- 51:43It's only 12% the stuff, and it's safer it, and he like, he, you know, pulls
- 51:51out his weapon dumps boxes of the actual stuff in front of them and forces them
- 51:58to eat what they did to the people.
- 52:02Kearns: Cool
- 52:02Ryan: Yep.
- 52:03Jon: yeah.
- 52:04I.
- 52:05Ryan: they get what they deserve and
- 52:07Jon: Exactly.
- 52:08Ryan: the cops come, you know, Mo and I guess he adopted them.
- 52:15Kearns: I
- 52:16Jon: mean, I guess,
- 52:17Ryan: just
- 52:17Jon: I guess I mean, yeah.
- 52:20Yeah.
- 52:21He just kind of has, he just, he just kind of has a kid and
- 52:25a girlfriend at the end, like,
- 52:27Kearns: Yep.
- 52:28Jon: and he really establish a whole lot of that.
- 52:30But you don't need that.
- 52:31Yeah.
- 52:32Kearns: questions like that.
- 52:32And I actually, for some reason, it really worked.
- 52:35Jon: Yeah.
- 52:36I don't need that question answered.
- 52:38Not by the stuff like,
- 52:39Kearns: with them now
- 52:40Jon: yeah.
- 52:42Yeah.
- 52:42He's like, chunk you live with me now?
- 52:44Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 52:47Yay.
- 52:47Ryan: live
- 52:48Jon: Sloth.
- 52:48Sloth and chunk
- 52:49Ryan: what do you mean chunk ass sloth?
- 52:51You live with
- 52:52Jon: Sloth and chunk.
- 52:53You live with me now?
- 52:54Yeah.
- 52:54Kearns: hear some stuff.
- 52:55Reviews,
- 52:57Jon: All right.
- 52:57So on Rotten Tomatoes, the stuff is a 68% with the critics.
- 53:04Ryan: Okay.
- 53:04Kearns: huh?
- 53:05Jon: 50% audience.
- 53:07Ryan: Okay.
- 53:08Kearns: actually kind of rough.
- 53:10I
- 53:10Jon: was a little surprised by that.
- 53:12I, I did too.
- 53:13Uh, so five stars, I adore this movie.
- 53:18Some of the special effects were a bit ropey even for its time.
- 53:22But the commercials and the presentation of the zombie dessert were so flashy
- 53:28that if you just saw the, where's the stuff advertisement, you would
- 53:31assume that it's a real product.
- 53:34Ryan: That's
- 53:34Jon: Mo Rutherford has a weird character arc, but he's goofy and I
- 53:39love him, and I agree with that part.
- 53:41Like you meet Mo and he's kind of, kind of a dirt peg.
- 53:45Ryan: Yeah.
- 53:45Jon: He's kind of, he, he's a corporate spy.
- 53:48He's taking money to try to ruin somebody else's company, and within
- 53:52like five or 10 minutes of the movie, you're like, nah, I love this dude.
- 53:57He's like, this just gangly, goofy.
- 54:01Dude.
- 54:02Ryan: The anti James Bond.
- 54:05Jon: Yeah, I like that.
- 54:07The anti James Bond.
- 54:08Yeah.
- 54:09Um, but you know, not everybody's gonna love the stuff.
- 54:13Some people could get enough.
- 54:14In fact, one star,
- 54:18probably the worst horror movie I ever sat through.
- 54:22I liked the idea though, and it had a couple good moments.
- 54:28Ryan: That was it.
- 54:29Kearns: That's it.
- 54:29Jon: That's it.
- 54:30That's, that's the entirety.
- 54:32Ryan: This person
- 54:33Jon: That's the entirety.
- 54:34Ryan: no
- 54:34Jon: The,
- 54:34Kearns: Didn't,
- 54:35Jon: I mean, listen here, here's what I would say about this review.
- 54:41How is it the worst horror movie you've ever seen?
- 54:44But it had a couple of good moments.
- 54:46The worst horror movies I've ever seen had zero good moments.
- 54:50Ryan: Zombie Halloween.
- 54:51Two.
- 54:51Just saying just,
- 54:54Kearns: with that.
- 54:55Ryan: just.
- 54:56Kearns: cool with crapping on Rob Zombie again this week.
- 54:59Jon: Listen.
- 55:01Listen, Rob, Rob, zombie doesn't even, he is not even in the same universe
- 55:07as some of the worst ones I've seen.
- 55:09horny teenagers must
- 55:11Kearns: Perish.
- 55:12Jon: cease to exist.
- 55:13Kearns: There it is.
- 55:14There it is.
- 55:15Ryan: Disappear
- 55:16Kearns: to do, Ryan, I hope you're up for this because it, we're gonna have to put
- 55:20a beep in like the old days, like, boop.
- 55:22Ryan: beep.
- 55:25Kearns: That'll be
- 55:25Ryan: Follow the
- 55:26Jon: All right.
- 55:26Ryan: ball.
- 55:28Jon: And if, if you thought that one star person didn't like
- 55:31the stuff, here's a half star.
- 55:35It's banal, it's bad.
- 55:37It doesn't make any sense.
- 55:39It can be treated as satire, but it's a very bad taste.
- 55:43Satire.
- 55:45Ryan: How do they know how it tastes?
- 55:47Kearns: I feel like it's a good taste.
- 55:48Jon: I mean, he, I, I think he's licking movie covers.
- 55:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 55:52He's lick something.
- 55:53Ryan: the taste, not the stuff a half star.
- 55:57Jon: I think I,
- 55:57Kearns: All right.
- 55:58Ryan: Now
- 55:58Jon: is one I don't, I don't understand the bad reviews for like that bad.
- 56:04Ryan: I don't get it.
- 56:05Kearns: just It's not a fair assessment.
- 56:08I'm not saying it's the greatest movie I've ever seen
- 56:10or anything, but it was, damn.
- 56:11It was a fun ride.
- 56:12Jon: Yeah.
- 56:13Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 56:14Jon: Yeah.
- 56:14Ryan: And underrated
- 56:15Jon: what do you guys think?
- 56:18Kearns: who goes first, Ryan, you or me.
- 56:20Ryan: I'll go first.
- 56:21I, you know, first time watch and you know, out of five I'd give it a
- 56:28out of five.
- 56:31I'll say that, um, hits all the beats correctly.
- 56:34It's a fun movie.
- 56:36It does.
- 56:36The job characters are like, like the characters, you're rooting for 'em,
- 56:42you're happy when the bad guys get it.
- 56:45It's, done right.
- 56:48You know, I think it's a b movie.
- 56:50Um, de acting is a little choppy at parts, but that's what makes it fun.
- 56:56And I love Mo.
- 56:58I want Mo Mo.
- 56:59All right.
- 57:00I want a sequel.
- 57:01All right.
- 57:02I want the taste, but it was good.
- 57:05So 3.75 out of five.
- 57:07Kearns: I was gonna say three five.
- 57:08I'll stick to it for all the reasons Ryan said, but I'm not gonna repeat them.
- 57:13Ryan: No, repeat them.
- 57:14Kearns: it's a good movie.
- 57:15It's a good movie.
- 57:16Jon: I am way above you guys on this one.
- 57:18Ryan: Ooh, what, what was
- 57:20Jon: Way above.
- 57:21This is a, this is a 4.5 for me.
- 57:23Ryan: say five.
- 57:24Outta five.
- 57:24I was like,
- 57:25Jon: It's not, I, I could argue that if I just go purely on my expectation
- 57:32scale, it is a five, but I'll go 4.5.
- 57:35I love this movie.
- 57:37Like, I've loved this movie from the first time I saw it, even
- 57:40when I didn't understand all the anti-consumerism elements.
- 57:44Even like, I've always, I didn't understand all the jokes.
- 57:48It's just always hit me exactly where I want that movie to hit me.
- 57:53It's funny, it's well produced.
- 57:56It's the, the practical effects are mostly on point.
- 58:01There's like, we, you brought up the tanker truck.
- 58:04There was, you know, there's a moment in there where it's a little.
- 58:08Little not great, but it's like 4.5.
- 58:13The stuff is a 4.5.
- 58:15Ryan: two scenes real quick, as you've mentioned with the
- 58:17green screen, and I get it,
- 58:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 58:19Ryan: it works so well for the movie where it's
- 58:21Jon: Yeah.
- 58:22I mean, it works.
- 58:23Yeah.
- 58:23Ryan: Yeah.
- 58:23It's like, it's not one of those, like, you're like, uh, it's like,
- 58:27okay, I see what you're doing.
- 58:28Bravo.
- 58:30I can applaud this.
- 58:32It's like, it's fun.
- 58:34It's not like, uh, this is
- 58:36Jon: Yeah.
- 58:36Ryan: It's like, okay, cool.
- 58:38All right, let's have fun.
- 58:39Let's enjoy this film.
- 58:40I'm in it.
- 58:42Jon: Yeah.
- 58:44And that, that's just what the stuff has to be is fun
- 58:47Ryan: Yep.
- 58:48Kearns: it
- 58:48Jon: it
- 58:49Kearns: That's a great way to roll into our top fives, my friends.
- 58:52Ryan: Top fives.
- 58:53Oh my God.
- 58:53Top fives.
- 58:55You know what?
- 58:56With top fives, we're gonna make it a little fun.
- 58:58More fun, because tonight I am covering actors who've played
- 59:04mobsters in horror movies in honor of Paul Serino in Danny Aiello.
- 59:10And we're gonna start off with one of my favorite, uh, I couldn't find
- 59:14Pauly walnuts, but I got Robert Dero.
- 59:18Kearns: Paul from Goods.
- 59:19Ryan: Pauly.
- 59:19Oh, I
- 59:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:20Ryan: Walnuts.
- 59:21I went Sopranos way.
- 59:23Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 59:24Ryan: Henry.
- 59:24Henry, you gotta go.
- 59:26Alright, but we're gonna start, actually, this actor was in
- 59:29Goodfellas and that's Robert De Niro.
- 59:31And we're gonna start off with 1990 fours Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
- 59:36not exactly Ermo Del Toros Frankenstein.
- 59:39It's Kenneth Branas Frankenstein.
- 59:41And he does it, Give a little background.
- 59:45We already get Bram Stoker's Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola,
- 59:48Kenneth Brianna comes out and he goes, gonna do Frankenstein.
- 59:52He gets a screenplay written by Steph Lady Frank Debo.
- 59:56He gets De Niro as the monster.
- 59:58Um, Helena Bon m Carter as the lead the bride.
- 1:00:06I know, like
- 1:00:08Jon: I love her.
- 1:00:09Ryan: go wrong with this movie.
- 1:00:10It's a, it's a good movie.
- 1:00:13What Helena,
- 1:00:15Kearns: Yeah, you keep going.
- 1:00:16Ryan: love Hele.
- 1:00:17Kearns: I don't wanna extend this.
- 1:00:18Ryan: No, it's okay.
- 1:00:18But it goes into number four.
- 1:00:20Number four, it's based on one of my favorite, novels, written by Agatha
- 1:00:25Christie called, and then there were none it features Ray Liotta, who of course in
- 1:00:31mobster movies, Goodfellas, uh, famously and its identity actually starring John
- 1:00:36AK as well as Amanda, Pete Albert Molina.
- 1:00:39Kearns: on this podcast
- 1:00:40Ryan: we have, I love identity.
- 1:00:42It's just, you know, the not to, I don't not gonna spoil anything
- 1:00:46'cause we probably spoiled it before.
- 1:00:48Watch that episode, go through our archive.
- 1:00:51Have fun.
- 1:00:52But the psychology of, in how it builds up and how they utilize Agatha
- 1:00:56Christie's story and flip it in a way, it's very unique always stuck
- 1:01:02with me since it's come out in 2003, which leads to my number three.
- 1:01:08It doesn't star, but it co-stars an actor who played a mobster,
- 1:01:12and that's James Gal Feeney.
- 1:01:15always remember, time is on your side and that's fallen.
- 1:01:19I love that movie.
- 1:01:20You know, we've mentioned it before.
- 1:01:23It's just good, you know, stay away from people too.
- 1:01:27'cause something might be transferring from one spot to another.
- 1:01:30But this movie I haven't mentioned yet on the podcast.
- 1:01:34No, definitely not.
- 1:01:35COVID.
- 1:01:39Well, really,
- 1:01:40Jon: What do you think would've happened to that demon during COVID?
- 1:01:43Ryan: I probably would've made it,
- 1:01:44Kearns: would've been, he would've, uh, stuck in, stayed inside, right?
- 1:01:48He can stay in for a long time.
- 1:01:51Ryan: like does a hibernation thing, right?
- 1:01:55Kearns: I think he can stay in one host for a bit, can't he?
- 1:01:57Ryan: Well, according,
- 1:01:59Kearns: Oh, you don't remember.
- 1:01:59John doesn't
- 1:02:00Ryan: according to the ending of the film, he does, you
- 1:02:02know, he gets stuck in the cat.
- 1:02:04So, and he's look.
- 1:02:06Kearns: can walk back.
- 1:02:08how he gets back out of the woods.
- 1:02:10'cause he can't be floating around for a while.
- 1:02:12Then he gets banished to wherever.
- 1:02:14Ryan: It's such a good, I'm gonna have to watch that.
- 1:02:16Well, number two, this is gonna be, I think, I believe a first,
- 1:02:20I haven't mentioned this film.
- 1:02:21we need some Al Pacino on this list, talking about actors who are mobsters.
- 1:02:26It's one of my favorites.
- 1:02:27It's 1997, the devil's advocate.
- 1:02:30I've, it's so good.
- 1:02:33The idea of like, you know,
- 1:02:36in like the illusion of Paradise loss, Dante Inferno, the false legend, the
- 1:02:42lore of making the deal with the devil, and not only seeing, I've seen it,
- 1:02:47um, three times and the first time was just to watch it for enjoyment.
- 1:02:52But the other two times was like, as a study and that movie, there's
- 1:02:56a lot of curves and each time you watch it, you see something new or
- 1:03:00you get something new out of it too.
- 1:03:03Not only from.
- 1:03:04Kearns: At least they're on
- 1:03:05Ryan: You get a lot outta her.
- 1:03:07Kearns: every time.
- 1:03:09Ryan: I'll say this, this one takes the cake.
- 1:03:11'cause we started with De Niro and we're gonna end with De Niro.
- 1:03:15And no, it's not Cape Fear.
- 1:03:17I don't consider that a horror film.
- 1:03:18I consider Angel Heart a horror film.
- 1:03:22Love Angel Heart.
- 1:03:23I've waved the flag many of times.
- 1:03:26I recommend people to watch it.
- 1:03:28So good stars.
- 1:03:30Lisa Bonnet.
- 1:03:31Lisa Bonnet, Charlotte Rampling.
- 1:03:34Kearns: said you almost did Lisa Benet
- 1:03:36Ryan: I know, I almost did.
- 1:03:37I caught myself though.
- 1:03:39Jon: It is her older si, her older sister.
- 1:03:41Kearns: let you get away with that.
- 1:03:44Ryan: Caught myself.
- 1:03:46Kearns: All right.
- 1:03:47Ryan: But that's my top five.
- 1:03:49Um, go watch Angel Heart.
- 1:03:51Stop being dweebs.
- 1:03:53Go watch Angel Heart
- 1:03:54Kearns: Go watch Angel Heart.
- 1:03:55John, you're top five.
- 1:03:58Jon: All right.
- 1:03:58I went with um, top five Killer Foods.
- 1:04:02Ryan: Tomatoes.
- 1:04:03Better be on this.
- 1:04:05Jon: Number five, red dye.
- 1:04:08Number three.
- 1:04:10Kearns: Is that like just the what they banned in Europe?
- 1:04:12Or is there a movie?
- 1:04:15Jon: I'll just have to wait and see.
- 1:04:16Strongly linked to cancer in lab animals, but don't worry, it's only in candles.
- 1:04:21Icings sprinkles, puddings, strawberry milk, frozen yogurt,
- 1:04:25Marino, Sherry, some hot dogs, bacon bits, some vegan meat substitutes.
- 1:04:29Nerds finally banned in the us, but not in effect until 2027.
- 1:04:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:04:34To give people time.
- 1:04:36Wait,
- 1:04:36Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:37Kearns: real stuff.
- 1:04:38Ryan: Wait,
- 1:04:39Kearns: Oh, this is depressing.
- 1:04:40Ryan: on.
- 1:04:40Kearns: cool.
- 1:04:41Let's keep this going.
- 1:04:42Ryan: Oh, this is real.
- 1:04:42Oh God, no.
- 1:04:44Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:04:44'cause that is true.
- 1:04:45Everything John just said is true.
- 1:04:48Oh,
- 1:04:49Jon: four, Kasu marzo
- 1:04:52Ryan: What
- 1:04:54Jon: maggot cheese.
- 1:04:55Kearns: No thank you.
- 1:04:57Jon: put this one on because I stumbled on this and you guys have to hear it.
- 1:05:01If I had to read about it.
- 1:05:02Kearns: We're
- 1:05:02Jon: The maggots, they put maggots in the cheese, the maggots poop, and gradually
- 1:05:07turn the cheese into an almost liquid.
- 1:05:09It becomes extremely dangerous if the maggots are dead because then
- 1:05:14it's spoiled and you will be too.
- 1:05:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:17Gross.
- 1:05:19Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:05:20Jon: three, fugu
- 1:05:22Ryan: What?
- 1:05:23Jon: a blowfish dish.
- 1:05:26It could be more dangerous than cyanide and can only be
- 1:05:29prepared by well-trained chefs.
- 1:05:32Ryan: Fugu?
- 1:05:34Jon: Fugu, FUGU.
- 1:05:35Ryan: know that's a Simpsons episode.
- 1:05:37Not even joking.
- 1:05:38Jon: It is.
- 1:05:39Ryan: Eats the
- 1:05:39Jon: is.
- 1:05:39Yep.
- 1:05:40Ryan: It's a good
- 1:05:41Jon: Poison fish.
- 1:05:41Poison fish.
- 1:05:42Fish.
- 1:05:42Poison fish.
- 1:05:43Ryan: Poison
- 1:05:45Jon: Yep.
- 1:05:46number two, AKI fruit.
- 1:05:49Un ripened.
- 1:05:50It contains hypoglycemia A, which can cause severe vomiting and even death.
- 1:05:56Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:05:57Jon: And number one, oh shit, I realized they did the wrong list.
- 1:06:01Kearns: We do Roundup.
- 1:06:03Jon: Number one, Ji.
- 1:06:07It's a squid dish that presents a choking hazard less thoroughly chewed
- 1:06:13because the tentacles can move and cling.
- 1:06:15Causing suffocation
- 1:06:17Ryan: it's alive.
- 1:06:18Kearns: still the
- 1:06:19Jon: a no, no, not really, but the, oh, guys, guys, that was the wrong list.
- 1:06:24I'm sorry, I've, that was my just plain Killer foods movie.
- 1:06:29My plain killer foods list.
- 1:06:31I have a killer food in movies list too.
- 1:06:35Kearns: Sweet.
- 1:06:37Jon: Number five,
- 1:06:38Kearns: You bastards.
- 1:06:41Jon: Hannibal.
- 1:06:42And The food in Hannibal is Paul's brain.
- 1:06:46Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:47Ryan: it is.
- 1:06:49Jon: Kler is a jerk to Clarice through the entire movie, which doesn't endear
- 1:06:53him to the titular serial killer.
- 1:06:55Kearns: Speaking of gangsters, by the way, tie into him, it's Ray tta
- 1:06:58Jon: It is Ray Liotta.
- 1:07:00so he kidnaps him, performs a craniotomy and serves his brain to Clarice,
- 1:07:05minus the fava beans in nice chiante
- 1:07:07Kearns: while he's still alive.
- 1:07:08Jon: and to himself.
- 1:07:09Yep.
- 1:07:10Ryan: that whole movie, that was the most unnerving scene I feel, where I was like,
- 1:07:14Jon: You know what?
- 1:07:15That you want that whole franchise?
- 1:07:17I think that's the most unnerving sequence.
- 1:07:20Like, that's just,
- 1:07:21Ryan: would take the
- 1:07:21Jon: that's rough.
- 1:07:22Ryan: the face when he peels the guy's face.
- 1:07:25Kearns: watch,
- 1:07:26Ryan: I would take that one over that
- 1:07:27Jon: don't know.
- 1:07:28Ryan: overall.
- 1:07:29Jon: Maybe, maybe,
- 1:07:32Kearns: neither.
- 1:07:32Jon: four, ghost ship.
- 1:07:36Ryan: Oh,
- 1:07:37Jon: ship it is the rat poison soup.
- 1:07:39Kearns: Oh.
- 1:07:41Jon: Probably most notable for the opening scene of a ballroom full of
- 1:07:44revelers being sliced by a wire ghost ship also offs a number of passengers
- 1:07:50with a soup full of rat poison.
- 1:07:53Ryan: Do you like?
- 1:07:54Kearns: to go.
- 1:07:54Cyanide is rough, dude.
- 1:07:56Ryan: Do you guys enjoy that movie?
- 1:07:57'cause I feel that's an underrated movie.
- 1:08:00Jon: I like parts of it.
- 1:08:01I like parts of it.
- 1:08:03Kearns: fine.
- 1:08:04Jon: number three, we're gonna go to 1990 and the TV movie It,
- 1:08:09Ryan: Ooh.
- 1:08:10Jon: and it's the Fortune Cookies Boys.
- 1:08:13Kearns: I knew.
- 1:08:13Jon: Uh, the enjoyable post Chinese meal ritual of the fortune cookie is ruined
- 1:08:20as Pennywise torches the adult losers with horrific versions filled with
- 1:08:25blood, an eyeball, a roach, and a crab.
- 1:08:29Almost enough to make you never want to find out your lucky numbers
- 1:08:32and a vague prediction ever again.
- 1:08:36Ryan: You know, it's not vague.
- 1:08:37Tim Curry's still alive.
- 1:08:39I just wanna put that out there.
- 1:08:40Jon: And Curry is still alive.
- 1:08:42Kearns: Still alive,
- 1:08:44Jon: number four, it's a simple pizza, right, guys?
- 1:08:48Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 1:08:49Four.
- 1:08:50The Dream Master except Freddy's, back to get the remaining dream warrior
- 1:08:56in the fourth installment directed by Renny Harlan, which I don't think
- 1:09:00I knew until I was researching this.
- 1:09:02in one of the more memorable scenes, Freddy enjoys a pizza with the heads of
- 1:09:05his victims in the shape of meatballs.
- 1:09:08he loves soul food.
- 1:09:11Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:09:13Ryan: What a meatball
- 1:09:13Kearns: a tough scene for me to watch too.
- 1:09:14When I was younger, I remember that being very disturbing,
- 1:09:17Ryan: you
- 1:09:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:18Ryan: would say,
- 1:09:18Kearns: them
- 1:09:19Ryan: okay, fair.
- 1:09:20I would say the bug scene always got me in that movie crushes her.
- 1:09:27Kearns: A hard
- 1:09:27Jon: And Ryan.
- 1:09:28Ryan, you almost stole my number one there, bud.
- 1:09:32Number one, attack of the Killer Donuts.
- 1:09:38Ryan: Oh.
- 1:09:39Ooh.
- 1:09:41Jon: Yeah.
- 1:09:42Kearns: ball, everybody.
- 1:09:43Jon: a serum that reanimate the dead accidentally gets mixed into donuts
- 1:09:48producing, nasty killer donuts.
- 1:09:50A small group must band together to save their town from these
- 1:09:54pissed off pint sized pastries.
- 1:09:57And you get a, see Thomas Howell cameo in this one.
- 1:10:01Kearns: Nice.
- 1:10:02Jon: Yeah.
- 1:10:03Ryan: munchkins.
- 1:10:05Kearns: That's, that should be the sequel if they
- 1:10:09Jon: There should be a sequel.
- 1:10:10It's really low rated and I think people just missed on this one.
- 1:10:13Like, it's, it's good fun.
- 1:10:17Ryan: All right.
- 1:10:18Kearns: Right?
- 1:10:18Good.
- 1:10:19Top five guys.
- 1:10:20That was the stuff.
- 1:10:22Ryan: Yes, it was.
- 1:10:23tried the
- 1:10:24Jon: was the stuff man?
- 1:10:27Kearns: It
- 1:10:27Jon: you can't get enough, if you can't get enough of the stuff,
- 1:10:31there's a great release from Arrow.
- 1:10:34Pick it up.
- 1:10:35Ryan: Can't get enough.
- 1:10:36Kearns: it even though it doesn't benefit us in any way.
- 1:10:39Jon: Not in the least.
- 1:10:41Kearns: See you next week,
- 1:10:42Ryan: Have a good one.
- 1:10:44Jon: See ya.
