- 1:18You support the next time, you're in Blacksburg, had to 301
- 1:22South Main Street, buddy, little tough coming off of that, that
- 1:28close out there. But we got a, we got a big one
- 1:30tonight. We got a big one tonight.
- 1:31It's going to be going to be fun.
- 1:33It's like an all the Doom and Gloom, not all doom and gloom
- 1:36gonna be a lot of fun. Someone we've been talking about
- 1:39getting on the Pod for quite a while now.
- 1:41And you know, let's sort of waste no time left.
- 1:45Introduce him here. Basically, this guy, young guy,
- 1:51great writer for Sons of Saturday, great writer for the
- 1:54key play, and a Virginia Tech gravatt of 2021.
- 1:59We're excited to have him on. And tonight we bring on Shelton
- 2:02Moss to talk a little bit of everything with us Shelton.
- 2:06Good evening, sir, how are you today?
- 2:09Hello gentleman. Is it's a pleasure to be on.
- 2:12I wish I was in a slightly better mood after Hokies win,
- 2:14but tough loss tonight. I'm sure we'll talk about it but
- 2:17still it's good to be on. Am always happy to talk with you
- 2:19guys. Yeah yeah, tough one.
- 2:22The clothes out there, there was that little run that 9-0 run
- 2:25that took a game where you know, we were right there the whole
- 2:30way shooting well and then just had a tough time getting to go
- 2:33in the basket there at the end and really a rough night on
- 2:36defense as well. Real mad indecent and I mean
- 2:41I've been looking at Stats here but they shoot Miami shot. 66
- 2:46percent from Boon for Cooper's, very limited Yeah, 42 years in
- 2:51front 3, you know, over 80% from the line.
- 2:54They outrebounded the Hokies slight Edge.
- 2:56The turnovers that were at 10:46, not a big deal, but the
- 3:01rebounds to me, were the real killer tonight.
- 3:03I mean, you're talking plus, 64 them in the category and and
- 3:08that in this, those three threes in that consecutive stretch Tech
- 3:12goes up. One off of free-throw.
- 3:14I think it was poked, eat that hit it or Basile.
- 3:18And they hit the free throw her off because I can't remember
- 3:22either. It's, I'll put the kid to bed
- 3:24while watching and stuff sometimes seriously.
- 3:28But and then it's like, Bam, Bam, Bam.
- 3:31And I think it's just a sitting in the first half to I was
- 3:36putting another child to bed. It's 7:44 and I come back and
- 3:40we're down, like, six, and it's like, she shall.
- 3:42Let's just talk about this game and just some stuff in general.
- 3:46What is it about these stretches?
- 3:48Where we See out the gate hot tonight out the gate hot 16:8.
- 3:53And then the next thing, you know, it's this five to seven
- 3:56minutes of cold. You know, what do you see for
- 3:59that when you're as you've been watching this team all year in
- 4:03your, for the frustrations with it?
- 4:06Yeah, I mean I try not to overreact too much just because,
- 4:08you know, it is college basketball.
- 4:10Like it's a game of runs, you're going to go on hot streaks,
- 4:12you're going to go and fix and that just happens.
- 4:14But I don't know. I mean, obviously Mike runs a
- 4:16very motion oriented often so So, you know, sometimes maybe
- 4:19the ball gets stuck, sometimes they're not, you know, running
- 4:22the actions, the way they need to be there.
- 4:23Not fight through screens thing. Like, you know, there's a lot of
- 4:26there's a lot of detail that goes into it and sometimes the
- 4:28execution isn't there. So you know we shoot a lot of
- 4:31Threes I don't think I don't want to show you as many threes
- 4:35as we did you know last year and I don't think we rely on June 23
- 4:39as much people think. But look if you're going to
- 4:41shoot the threes and you know sometimes you're not going to
- 4:42fall so you gotta find other ways to score.
- 4:44I think bacilli physically has been an issue this season.
- 4:47I think it's been better the last Games, as we saw ACC player
- 4:50of the week this week this week under there, but for the most
- 4:53part, you know, I think they they kind of missile Uma just
- 4:56kind of what he was able to do in the post last season.
- 4:58Not quite the same player facility that is as number 22.
- 5:02So I mean, you know, it was good tonight.
- 5:05I mean, you can't complain. I think I saw a stat on Twitter
- 5:08that Tech was the first team in the country this season, to lose
- 5:12a game where they shot. 50-40-90, meaning 50% in the
- 5:15floor, 40 percent from three any percent from the free-throw
- 5:18line. And so they were the first in
- 5:19the country to lose a game this season shooting that split.
- 5:23So I just, you know, the snake bit doesn't even begin to
- 5:25describe Advantage. Going to talk to you.
- 5:27What are the luck metrics for this?
- 5:28Okay, I mean, I can, I can check in the last time I checked
- 5:48Giving great closing out games at played, well down the
- 5:51stretch. I don't know if it's so much a
- 5:53coaching issue as maybe it is an execution issue, but this team
- 5:56just can't close out the the close games.
- 5:59Yeah, they definitely struggled. I mean, whether it's sometimes a
- 6:01cold streak, sometimes sloppy, passing, an execution on the
- 6:05offensive end sometimes, you know, just a bad rotation on
- 6:08defense and they are giving up some big open shots, two guys
- 6:12that are at that moment. Hot like mac was tonight.
- 6:15So it's just kind of been a little bit of everything at
- 6:18those. Key moments of the games but
- 6:20let's turn back the clock a little bit.
- 6:22Here we got a blowout win against Syracuse on Saturday.
- 6:28Where do you think this TEAM stands after Syracuse after
- 6:31Miami at this moment? In terms of chances to make the
- 6:34NCAA tournament? First, I think this loss
- 6:37tonight, definitely changes the complexion considerably.
- 6:40I know one game isn't, you know, the two critical but you know
- 6:44coming to this game II was looking at a site called bar
- 6:47torvik, was just some in see, a projection simulations and they
- 6:50gave us a 43 percent chance of making before this game.
- 6:53So with the Miami loss, maybe that's down to like, you know,
- 6:5637:36 somewhere in that range. I think that's pretty
- 6:58reasonable. The problem is, you're 38 in the
- 7:01ACC, it's a down year for the league.
- 7:03You know, you've got you, I mean, you have to beat like, you
- 7:05gave Buster win on Like, you cannot lose that game and make
- 7:07the tournament, unless you want to, you know, get an at large
- 7:10again and try to try to win the whole thing.
- 7:12But, you know, they got to win that game.
- 7:14I mean, they would have to go. What is it like 9 and 19 into?
- 7:18I don't know how many games I have left.
- 7:19I guess I got they got names laughs now.
- 7:21So maybe like 7 and 28 and one. I mean that's that's a really
- 7:23tough ass. So you know, like I said, I try
- 7:25not to overreact to a single game but it's like it's more.
- 7:28So the fact that you you started the season 3 and 8 and put
- 7:31yourself in such a tough spot rather than just this one loss
- 7:34and I mean my name is a good team, you know they're going
- 7:36Play good basketball. They got shot, they got shot
- 7:38makers, they got Playmakers, but it's just without you started.
- 7:40So Pearl. You put yourself in such a bad
- 7:42position and that seems to be a recurring theme with this team.
- 7:44All right, so here let me let me let me let me preface this shit,
- 7:47Sheldon, we were talking before. You hopped on with this in
- 7:50Bryant said beat UVA. Then we have to BBC Notre Dame,
- 7:56Georgia Tech pit Louisville, Florida, State at 7:00.
- 8:00So So are you saying like either you have to beat Miami or do
- 8:07along with you be a win Saturday to have any shot?
- 8:11You gazing must. I just don't see how you can
- 8:12lose that game and make it because like even if you you
- 8:15know, even if you I mean if you lose it like you have to go like
- 8:18now to know the rest of the way, and that's not even a guarantee
- 8:21to get you in. So I do like, you know, I just
- 8:24think you have to win that game and after that, you know, that's
- 8:27gonna be really tough game. Like if they beat Duke and UVA,
- 8:30I mean, they're in business, but that's it.
- 8:32It's really tough. Ask I just again, it just goes
- 8:33back to the bad start. You can't spend Seth every year
- 8:37and expect to be in a good spot. Yeah, definitely, definitely,
- 8:39can't dig a hole in January, like, we've done back-to-back
- 8:42seasons and expect anyone to do any favors.
- 8:45And I will say, you know, the committee might give a little
- 8:49bit of credence this year more than a gave last year, just
- 8:52because of Couture being out and looking at at that over that
- 8:56four-game stretch but I still think we still dug ourselves too
- 8:59much of a hole at this point where we really have to almost
- 9:02be perfect the rest of the wave. Say for maybe one game to really
- 9:08feel like you're secure heading into that selection.
- 9:11Absolutely. Yeah.
- 9:12And and, and to your point, I just to make a quick point, you
- 9:14know, also the non-conference schedule like non-conference
- 9:17resume was awesome. I mean, they beat, you know,
- 9:19Penn State. They beat Oklahoma State
- 9:21obviously UNC was conference game but, you know, back in back
- 9:23in December, that's why it's so disappointing because if it, if
- 9:26tech went 11 and 9 with a couple of good wins, this common
- 9:29scheduled a issue in the tournament with their anonymous,
- 9:32But they just, they just fell apart.
- 9:33Stop. It's not like it was last year
- 9:35where the non-conference hurt the team it this year and
- 9:40actually boosted it. But let's be honest about that
- 9:42non-conference. In some of those early games, I
- 9:45mean, what 12:11, and 112 and one in non-conference, but there
- 9:50were cracks there, they were, you know, we saw it to us it was
- 9:54always the three-point shooting because I told Brian, I said we
- 9:57can't live and die shooting 29 28 percent from point 35. 5:36,
- 10:02there's a chance. Was there anything else you
- 10:05noticed in those early wins? You know the Penn State when the
- 10:07win over ODU the Oklahoma State win.
- 10:09Was there anything you noticed? At istic Ali that said that
- 10:13keeps trending. What's going to happen is going
- 10:15to happen. Yeah, so statistically I think
- 10:21the three-point shooting was abnormally bad like bad against
- 10:24in-state is about against ODU. I was a couple weeks ago, so I
- 10:28get some numbers where I found that Virginia Tech's current
- 10:30three-point percentage, as a team would ranked the lowest of
- 10:34any Mae Kang team since 2011. So, I think that kind of says a
- 10:37lot like they're just not clicking for whatever reason.
- 10:40And I don't know if it's maybe like oh you know lesser quality
- 10:42of looks or are they just not good to get the ball to the
- 10:44right spot? But yeah, just three point
- 10:48shooting for every It's not perfect, there's not been there.
- 10:50I know it's kind of obviously improved the last few games.
- 10:52I'm sure they'll get the rise as the season progresses but yeah.
- 10:55Just the weird the weird thing tuning you know Padilla's kind
- 10:58of kind of fell off a little bit and yeah I just I never really
- 11:03honestly I never could have imagined that losing Hunter
- 11:05Couture would have had such a drastic impact you know I know
- 11:08it's not it's not a me to make excuses but it's like we start
- 11:12the season 11 21 and he was 45 games, all five games without
- 11:15you know, a guard like Couture who granted, you know, he's not.
- 11:18But he's a good player but he's not like you know MVP of the
- 11:21league or anything. I mean you lose all those games
- 11:23with him. Plants just completely falls
- 11:25apart. You know, you just can't beat
- 11:27any of those teams. It's like, you know what
- 11:29happened? Like I think it kind of shows
- 11:30the value has, but it's also like, man.
- 11:32Like what why are we? So, depending on one player
- 11:34that's kind of what it's kind of, what I want to know.
- 11:36Yeah, it's interesting because I mean we've had either rotations
- 11:39where Hunters went off the floor in the past that hasn't impacted
- 11:43as much as it does. It seems like with this rotation
- 11:45this season, you know, he missed, you know, a decent
- 11:48number of games, Stretch, what is it?
- 11:50Do you think about his skill set that this team kind of leans on
- 11:55and what it was missing when he was out?
- 12:00Well, he's a great green Setter, he's a great cutter, you know, I
- 12:03do film reviews all the time for the key play and when I'm going
- 12:05back and watch the game, it's like almost every single time
- 12:08that Tech runs a beautiful offensive set or an offensive
- 12:10action could towards in the middle of it, you know, because
- 12:12he's the one send the screens and there is a very much, you
- 12:14know, a precise art to screen setting the way Cuts another
- 12:17basketball, the way moves without the basketball, the way
- 12:20passes. And my tongue said the way he
- 12:22receives the ball, another kind of money detail there, but the
- 12:25way it catches the ball which obviously the forearm fracture,
- 12:27kind of a And then also is defense, you know he's a very
- 12:30good Defender. He has good footwork.
- 12:33He's hard to you know kind of kind of body up and get past, it
- 12:36doesn't feel very much. She doesn't bite for dumb shot.
- 12:37Fakes and then the shooting obviously kind of self you know
- 12:41he's a guy that can go off for six reason one night.
- 12:43He's a, he's a good shooter but also a high volume should, which
- 12:46is a very rare, I mean, shooting 40% from three on a very high
- 12:49volume and I think that's, you know, one of the best marks in
- 12:52the country if you looked into his attempts.
- 12:54So, I mean, he just does everything like all those little
- 12:57things and then the things you See in the box score and the
- 13:00things you don't see in the box. Or I mean it's just you just
- 13:02does everything. Yep.
- 13:03It's true. He does everything in his
- 13:05defense. I mean you could probably tell
- 13:07this to me, I mean how many where does he as far as taking
- 13:10charges this year? Even with four games missed, it
- 13:12felt like the early part of the Season.
- 13:14Every game he got two or three charges taken, which is crazy.
- 13:18But again, that's great position.
- 13:19Defense, that's great being in the right spot.
- 13:21And so many times just doing that, it helps what it helps in
- 13:25general is the other team now is not going to attack him.
- 13:28That way. So it's going to be easier for
- 13:30the rest of the team because they know they're not going to
- 13:32attack him that way. He's already drawn a charge,
- 13:34they can't get good shots off. So a lot of easy things.
- 13:37Let's pivot to something else, though.
- 13:40Let's talk about minutes now. Darius Maddox Miss.
- 13:44Tonight's game as he did Saturday's game.
- 13:46So he's not been in a while but kind of starting with the Duke
- 13:50game. We saw his Minix get
- 13:53significantly cut. He only had six minutes in that
- 13:58you game, where kid and Collins the two primary guys off the
- 14:02bench, got 20 and 22 Petit was at six.
- 14:07And before that, though he had been he'd always been up there
- 14:11and for some reason, this year We know he's a good player, but
- 14:16for this some reason this year he just could not find it on.
- 14:21Do you think? Is he going to come back?
- 14:23If you'd heard anything, is it? You know, is he coming back?
- 14:26Is everything okay? Because I think that's the first
- 14:28warmers is he's not there if he's there, you could say, maybe
- 14:32he's sick and hurt something. He's just not on the bench and,
- 14:35you know, we all want to make sure he's okay before anything
- 14:37else. Yeah.
- 14:39So I know absolutely nothing about his status for The Growers
- 14:42who are joining the team. I know it's a family matter of
- 14:43seems pretty serious. If we're to take Mike young at
- 14:45his word which I will as far as its playtime.
- 14:47But you mentioned I think if but Maddox is that he is not a very
- 14:51physical driver. He has, he has trouble sort of
- 14:54attacking the rim because he's kind of a kind of as a thin
- 14:56frame, and just doesn't really seem to be.
- 14:58No, just really know what he's doing all the time, kind of
- 15:00awkward when he wants to finish. So it is not driving the
- 15:03basketball. Then he has to shoot threes, but
- 15:06his three-point shot is in there this year.
- 15:07So instead, he sell In for mid-range jumpers, which are
- 15:10kind of an inefficient shot. And I was he said some but it's
- 15:12not the best shot. It's not the shot you one, which
- 15:14is why if you look at you know the analyst has his room and
- 15:16free rate is down a lot. You want to be shooting, ideally
- 15:19shots, the rim and shots from three and he's not getting those
- 15:21as much as his counterparts, you know, defensively.
- 15:24I think he's been kind of, you know.
- 15:26So so but you see with Collins? I mean MJ Collins is a guy that
- 15:31you know was six or four fish athletic, you know, very
- 15:34athletic Wing, who can get to the cup, occasionally plays good
- 15:37defense, I think so, Why he's been playing an edge, I think
- 15:41Mike young has given him the green light because he's been so
- 15:44good as a freshman on both ends of the court.
- 15:48And I just think with Maddox you know it's I think his role
- 15:51ideally this is just my opinion. I think it role would be better
- 15:55suited to come off the bench as well.
- 15:56Like a spot-up shooter type which was his role last season.
- 15:59You know, just come off give like maybe 15, 20 minutes off
- 16:01the bench max. You hit a few 3s would be like a
- 16:04spell, you know, spot-up shooter, catch and shoots have a
- 16:06guy. I just don't know.
- 16:07Game is really built to Be, you know, a stray full-time starter
- 16:11at the ACC level. I just, I just think he's he
- 16:14just doesn't really have that in his game.
- 16:17Yeah, and it worked in spots as we went down the stretch run
- 16:20last year, especially in the tournament.
- 16:22But it seems like sustaining that over the full course of a
- 16:25season. He hasn't been able to get it
- 16:27done in that role and I definitely agree with you.
- 16:29I think kind of a guy you bring Off the Bench to be a spot
- 16:31shooter. A guy you put in the lineup when
- 16:34you want, you know, your three-point guys on the court,
- 16:37but maybe not that full time. Started that we seen at the
- 16:39start of the year. Let's talk a little bit more.
- 16:43I know we got your kids had some good minutes poteete had some
- 16:48good minutes tonight. Do we look at Maddox?
- 16:52Are we kind of going to get some of the minutes replaced in
- 16:56aggregate with those players with Collins with with kid, on
- 17:00the court as well? And I yeah I think they've done
- 17:03a man as well. Yeah.
- 17:06Actually came in is a good guy to bring up because I thought he
- 17:08played us all game can Syracuse you know Miss hey miss his first
- 17:10few shots you know which kinds but you know he handed a very
- 17:14good end of the game on a very good note.
- 17:16Play good defense. Got a few rebounds, have some
- 17:18assess. I just, you know, right now, you
- 17:21know, college is a, got our, excuse me.
- 17:22Yeah. Camden rather came in is a guy
- 17:24that hasn't played college basketball essentially ever
- 17:27before the season, because he was hurt last year at Memphis
- 17:29and his first season. So he's sort of like a red shirt
- 17:34freshman. Ali or I mean, you might as well
- 17:36say true freshman because he really hasn't played much at all
- 17:38or been able to, you know, practice much at all, I like
- 17:41him, you know. It kind of has that like sort of
- 17:43small forward, power forward, type role.
- 17:46Ideally, if you can work on a three-point shot, that'd be
- 17:48great. Because I think that's where
- 17:49most of his value would lie. And, you know, talk about, you
- 17:52know, kid and petite. You know, it, depending on what
- 17:54the matchups are, if you want to go big and put those guys in,
- 17:57so, I think, you know, the depth, the depth puts forward is
- 17:59fine. It's just, you know, when you're
- 18:00missing Maddox, obviously and then having to play college as a
- 18:03freshman as good as he is. Is you're going to kind of go
- 18:05through those Growing Pains? It's just it's a tough situation
- 18:08sometimes. So I think the wing depth is
- 18:11really hurt the Hokies this season and it's gotten better
- 18:13but that's probably the one area where I'd look at and say you
- 18:16know the the plate is really holding this team back.
- 18:20Absolutely. All right let's pivot next to
- 18:22this guy. Alright, so it took forever for
- 18:25him to play and then he plays and we're excited or cited
- 18:29against it when he played in that Syracuse game.
- 18:31First time we saw him Rodney rice and then he gets hurt.
- 18:34He breaks his finger. For all of us is just like this,
- 18:38like oh my gosh, but let me just ask you because I'm sure you
- 18:42reviewed a lot of his tape in recruiting being down there.
- 18:46You know you've seen him play how How much of an impact you
- 18:50think that skill set would have on this roster?
- 18:52Let's say he was healthy from Jump Street back in November.
- 18:58Well a lot. I mean I will say you know I
- 19:00didn't watch it kind of hits one high school but just you know,
- 19:02seeing how you placing it in practice, you need to kind of
- 19:05super long and athletic. He's a versatile playmaker.
- 19:08He can sort of you know, beat you off the bounce.
- 19:10I think the one thing about the mechanic system is that he
- 19:12typically recruits, you know, guys who can shoot guys who are
- 19:16skilled over those long athletic slasher types, which is more of
- 19:18the Biryani rice model, you know, sort of what dearest Max
- 19:22ideally would be prices guy when you have the extra component of
- 19:25like a slasher who just get to the cup and and score at will, I
- 19:28mean that provides so much even if it's only in a bench trial,
- 19:30like 10 to 10 to 12 minutes a game.
- 19:32I mean, that's, you know, that provides a ton especially,
- 19:34because he's a point guard. So radically he would be giving
- 19:39Sean Padula more minutes on the bench to rest, and then you can
- 19:42slide him, you know, at the one played guitar with them
- 19:45essentially, because I don't think that or I just don't like
- 19:47him. You know, being here like, you
- 19:49know, secondary point guard role I just I don't like his, you
- 19:53know, his vision necessarily worse.
- 19:55I don't think as like the speed or the handles to be effective
- 19:57in that role. Obviously is a shooting guard,
- 19:59that's what he is. So dealing with race, you could
- 20:01just have him play the back of 1 which would you know, give give
- 20:05padule-- some more rest and have Couture and everybody else
- 20:07playing their normal positions. So yeah, it's definitely been a
- 20:10big loss. I mean, like you thought, you
- 20:11know, Curtis you alluded to the fact that Tech was alone in one
- 20:14and non conference and that was without any rice.
- 20:16So it's not like this team is, you know, desperate I'm needing
- 20:19a guy like that, but it would provide a lot of boost, I think
- 20:22a conference play especially once he kind of gets his legs
- 20:24going. Yeah.
- 20:29And when we look at this, we've seen so many different kinds of
- 20:31versions of this hokey team this year between Couture being out
- 20:35in some of the forward and Center rotations that they've
- 20:38had what version, what lineup, what what, ideal playstyle?
- 20:45What game, what? Yeah, what yeah, what game
- 20:48showed the kind of the mold of what, the Hokies need to play
- 20:52over this the stretch run of the season.
- 20:54So they can Potentially secure a spot in the tournament without
- 20:59having to rely on running the table in Greensboro.
- 21:03Yeah, I mean if you're talking about a specific game I would
- 21:05say you know I would say Syracuse but that's little bit
- 21:07different because of the you know the defense they run the
- 21:10kind of attacked a lot differently but just looking at
- 21:13the you know, the games here. I mean you know, Oklahoma State
- 21:17I thought was actually a really impressive win because their
- 21:19team similar to Texas. Very big physical, they play
- 21:22good defense, not the best offensive team, but Tech won
- 21:24that game playing very poorly. I think they shot.
- 21:27What are they shoot? You know, 45 percentage and
- 21:29everything shot. 35% 43, which one very good.
- 21:31But They graded on a five-point against good team on a neutral
- 21:35site like that. That's type of wind where I was
- 21:37like, okay, this team is legit like, they're better than last
- 21:39year. You know, didn't quite turn out
- 21:41that way but, you know, the UNC win look good.
- 21:45Obviously, they didn't have baked cod, so I kind of played
- 21:47it but, you know, they took a another top 25 team in my
- 21:50opinion, 1 by 8 against them and then Dukas, well, I mean, I
- 21:55still think Duke is good, you know, after the Buddha was lost
- 21:58to to the Hokies they beat Georgia Tech by 43.
- 22:02So, So, you know, that's team in my opinion that is still kind of
- 22:04in that top 25 range even though they're not ranked, but Tech was
- 22:07able to beat them. They shot well from three, they
- 22:09play, you know, they got enough defense of stuff from the used
- 22:11to and they were building his about shaming Philip house key
- 22:15you know, 7-foot who handles the ball, the fitguard.
- 22:17Yeah. Mark Mitchell 06:48 being
- 22:18guarded by him to Collins like that's you know, that's a pretty
- 22:20big disparity there but they were they were able to get the
- 22:23win. So I mean just stuff like that.
- 22:24You know when you shoot you the ball, you just get enough
- 22:27defensive stops. You know, I think this is a team
- 22:28that it's never like, we are never going to play great
- 22:31defense under Can it just has to be that sort of like, borderline
- 22:34competent level, where we can get enough stops.
- 22:38So we're still friends, can, you know, can can give us a chance.
- 22:41So, your games, like that, Oklahoma State UNC, I mean, even
- 22:44the dating game, as well as probably much more accurate
- 22:46reflection of what this team can be, but it just hasn't really
- 22:49materialized in conference play. All right?
- 22:51I got one more question before we put it over to women's Hoops
- 22:55of the losses, which one pissed you off the most, which one?
- 22:58Why were you sitting there? I'm going to bring it to the
- 23:00head a little bit before we got on.
- 23:02Um, did you literally finish the game?
- 23:04Whether you're a castle or sitting there in your apartment?
- 23:06You just like I want a drink cuz I'm freaking angry.
- 23:09Like what the hell just happened?
- 23:10Which game which game I would say, based on how it played out?
- 23:15Okay, this is my honest answer, it was BC.
- 23:18It was not for not for any particular reason except for the
- 23:21fact that I just hate losing to that team because we cannot beat
- 23:24them. We cannot beat them at that damn
- 23:27building. What is the kanji for him only?
- 23:32General cannot win on that. By the way, I mean, did you see
- 23:35their win tonight? I mean, I don't know what it is.
- 23:41I mean, it doesn't make sense. We all do.
- 24:38And by the way, we're going to talk football schedule later
- 24:40with you. So we were so happy when they
- 24:44ditch divisions, right? So happy we don't have to go to
- 24:47PC anymore. Damn ACC.
- 24:50Hey, one more year and you're going to go on the road to be
- 24:53see one last time, we'll talk about that later.
- 24:56I brought let's go over to women's hoops man.
- 24:58Um let's just be realistic. This is a super talented Hokies
- 25:04women's team. They I've dropped a couple
- 25:08against similar ranked against Notre Dame.
- 25:09There is there is no shame in losing to Notre Dame but the
- 25:13Elegance Miami that one that one irritates me because it's like
- 25:18we know we're better than them. Then lost the dude.
- 25:21Last week Dixit stop pointing there's no ill will in that but
- 25:25what's the realistic ceiling in your opinion under Kenny Brooks
- 25:29this year? How far can this team go?
- 25:32Yeah, so when it comes to postseason basketball, I try not
- 25:35to talk in terms of ceiling, just because I know that the
- 25:38term is so random and so I don't want to define success or
- 25:41failure based on, you know, very specific individual outcomes.
- 25:45I will say that if I'm just judging based on Talent, like if
- 25:48I were to run like a thousand simulations that this season and
- 25:50some sort of computer model, I think that seemed absolutely has
- 25:53a talent to go to the Sweet 16 and I think they could make
- 25:56Italy day. Now, final fours are different,
- 25:58it's a different ballgame because the talent distribution,
- 26:01women's basketball is really Much more so than men's toward
- 26:03of that sort of at the top, like he got obviously the Yukons and
- 26:06the South Carolina is like, if you just look like this, those
- 26:09things are so much you know, farther ahead than every other
- 26:11team. Whereas I think in men's you
- 26:13have a you have a little bit more parity.
- 26:16So I, you know, I don't want to Define them too much, but, you
- 26:18know, if they can make a Deep Run in the ACC tournament, it
- 26:21certainly cable. If they can get to the Sweet 16,
- 26:23I would say, I would say this Curtis, they have to win the
- 26:27first weekend because because we are in women's basketball if you
- 26:29don't, if you don't know, you host the Regionals.
- 26:32Yeah. Yeah, whatever you call it, the
- 26:33first round, the second round. So there are 64 the round of 32
- 26:36you host at at the, at the upper seed.
- 26:39So if text hosting that, like, you got to win that.
- 26:41That's no. Excuse.
- 26:42You're playing at home, you're playing.
- 26:43It's, you know, probably like a 7-seater, you know, 15 seed.
- 26:47So you just get, you got to win that first weekend laws.
- 26:50Do I goes, Florida Gulf Coast and makes like, 600 threes or
- 26:54shoot, 60% from three? I mean, yeah.
- 27:03Against some of the tougher opponents they played to really
- 27:05play strong for three quarters, and then kind of fading that
- 27:08forth. Have you observed, anything?
- 27:10That would kind of explain you why?
- 27:13This team may fade a little bit down the stretch in those games?
- 27:17Yeah. So I haven't paid as much
- 27:19scrupulous attention to the women's team has have the men's,
- 27:22but I will say, just from what I've converted kind of observed,
- 27:24what? Met Brooks won't make it there
- 27:26at the most athletic team that's just, not the way they're built
- 27:29their Biltmore in like high IQ players, who, you know, who
- 27:31know, who know the game, who can move the ball, that's kind of
- 27:34their MO. And I think sometimes when that
- 27:36happens, if you're not really like athletically dominant your
- 27:39sometimes, you're going to run two opponents where you can, you
- 27:42know, kind of outwork you physically, and I think
- 27:45sometimes that's, that's happened to them.
- 27:47I'm just in terms of you know, the shot creation, you know,
- 27:49dribble penetration to the railroad stuff is kind of based
- 27:52on athleticism. So if the shots aren't falling
- 27:55occasionally, you're going to run into some misses and also,
- 27:58you know, Liz keightley is very that draw so much attention,
- 28:01like she will get double team, she'll get Triple team
- 28:03sometimes, and that's a lot harder to pass out of than it
- 28:07looks. I mean, she's got a lot better
- 28:08with that, you know, in terms of her her IQ, her Awareness on the
- 28:11curtain on the court knowing where the double teams are
- 28:13coming from. But she's if teams are targeting
- 28:16her You know, that means that other players have to be on the
- 28:20top of their game. And if they're not, then it
- 28:21becomes really hard because it's, you know, not easy to
- 28:24neutralize her. If you're double-teaming her
- 28:26triple, triple teaming her on every possession.
- 28:28You've got to have some ball up. That's just, that's just how it
- 28:30works. So it's kind of been coming on.
- 28:32Other players to serve, step up and sometimes, you know, it
- 28:35doesn't happen. Look like the way you should.
- 28:36But that being said, there's still a top 20 in the country,
- 28:39in my opinion. So I think, I think they'll be
- 28:41fun. I think you've already answered
- 28:43this next question. We have, you already talked
- 28:46about. We already talked about you
- 28:47know, tournament success I mean is the disappointment
- 28:50essentially not getting out of the first weekend at home Yes,
- 28:55mainly, because we're hosting like, you know, you got your
- 28:58home crowd with you and I think ideally you'd like to see Tech
- 29:01be three or four C at worst. I right now, they're ranked 13.
- 29:05So they're going to be a three or four seed ideal first, just
- 29:08that nothing goes, terribly wrong throughout the at the end
- 29:10of the year. So you're playing a 14 seed to
- 29:14start and then you would get probably the I guess would be
- 29:17the 611 winter after that. So I mean those those should do
- 29:19winnable games again on your home court where you're going to
- 29:22be favored. So definitely they, I would love
- 29:24to see this. Steam make it out of the out of
- 29:26the first weekend. Find anything else.
- 29:31Go ahead? Yeah, I will say, I definitely
- 29:32agree with that. Yeah, I think the, you know, the
- 29:34mark of failure would be okay. Well, back-to-back first-round
- 29:38exits. I was especially early,
- 29:39especially when you're hosting, so that would definitely be a
- 29:42disappointment. Let's flip it over, though.
- 29:45Let's flip it over to Hokies wrestling, which we know you
- 29:49have been sending. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:52We've seen you reporting live from the field.
- 29:55There's yeah. Let's run it back to NC State
- 30:01first. Let's run it back to NC State.
- 30:045143 in Castle. Big-time atmosphere for
- 30:09wrestling. What was that?
- 30:10Like, it was awesome, man. You know, I went with my track,
- 30:13I went with my boys outdated Cunningham and a few others and
- 30:16we just had a good time. I think wrestling is a very
- 30:18underrated college sport. I would say pound for pound.
- 30:21It is probably one of the more energetic.
- 30:23Atmospheres of any sport you ever see just because it gets
- 30:27into it, you know, when two guys are going In the clock's ticking
- 30:30down, there's that there's little, the noise level, it's
- 30:32just awesome. And it's something that like I
- 30:34haven't experienced about my life because I've only been to a
- 30:36handful of wrestling matches. But when you get in there and
- 30:39you see you know the intensity, which it's awesome man.
- 30:41So it was super, super good to get that win because I know
- 30:44interstate is sort of like the premier program.
- 30:47Not that Tech isn't but like they are one of the Premier
- 30:49programs in the ACC and in the country.
- 30:51So so one of the good stem is like a win against UConn
- 30:53basketball. Like it's a it's a program to
- 30:55finding win. Yeah, it really is or one of the
- 30:58best in the country. I want to talk about a part of
- 31:01that atmosphere. That might was Andy Smith.
- 31:04The local kid when he secured that.
- 31:07When, like, you've been in Castle for basketball games, we
- 31:11know did that place shape when he got that final when he just
- 31:14secured the win. And got that point for
- 31:17essentially the upset, I don't know if it shook but say it was
- 31:21just as loud as if as if you know 100 or hit a game-winning
- 31:26three in Castle like that, it was loud man.
- 31:29And I believe I believe he was a second to last match of the
- 31:32night. If I'm not mistaken about that.
- 31:33Max hold on was it was definitely towards the end.
- 31:37I don't know. I don't know exactly where yeah
- 31:39there, but so I think yeah. So he got like a takedown or
- 31:43something to go up at the very end and then the he said, he was
- 31:47up by like, maybe like one or two and to the NC State player
- 31:50were, the wrestler was trying to get a takedown of him.
- 31:52It kind of had a like, you're up on one leg, sort of trying to,
- 31:55you know, Wrestling down and he did a great job of Defense, you
- 31:58know, staying upright time expired.
- 32:00So again I don't know anything about wrestling tintocalis, be
- 32:03good. Just tell like he did a great
- 32:04job of sealing out that match and that was what allowed Tech
- 32:07to to win the match. Ultimately so yeah, that's great
- 32:09job by him. Yeah, it was the next to last
- 32:11match. But what it did is it
- 32:12effectively put Tech up enough with Hunter, Hunter, kataka
- 32:17loss, but that wasn't expected loss.
- 32:20Yes, one of my fraternity, Brothers, David fuel, I've
- 32:23mentioned it before on here. He wrestled at Longwood He
- 32:26College, he is my go-to on wrestling, literally, I am
- 32:30seriously. If he feels like, it's going to
- 32:32be tough for him. He's a CPA.
- 32:35I'm seriously, when we go to Nationals, we might have him on
- 32:38for 15 minutes because he knows enough about it.
- 32:41And me, and him had a conversation after Bryce after
- 32:45Bryson, on the absolutely destroyed, a top-10 wrestler and
- 32:50I said, does Bryce have a chance?
- 32:51And he says, yeah, because the guy that wanted 157 went to 165
- 32:56And he says, 157 is not. As fact, he says, Bryce of Donna
- 33:00has a legitimate shot to win a National Title.
- 33:03And when we say that, I think Sam, what Anna does definitely.
- 33:07Oh, yeah, those. And that, I mean, it's
- 33:12excitement with something like that.
- 33:14I mean, even with the upset about it, and it sucked and we
- 33:17came out to gain, got pin, but you know, what's the overall
- 33:21Community there? I mean, is it similar to
- 33:24football and basketball where the community is Behind this
- 33:26program. Definitely, you can sense it.
- 33:30I mean, if you look at like, the growth of the program in the
- 33:31past, you know, 55 10 years it's been pretty to watch.
- 33:35Like, I know, you know, back in the 2000's like I'm a tech was
- 33:39horrible at wrestling like they were talking about cutting the
- 33:41program, so to see where kind of where it's come from our wisest,
- 33:46pretty pretty amazing. I know they've they've found a
- 33:48lot on Jay with it scrt. See at the Southeast Regional
- 33:50Training Center, couple guys, you know, practice and all that
- 33:54stuff. So they've had the financial
- 33:56backing of organizations like that.
- 33:58So I think they just, you know, the port the infrastructure to
- 34:01really win at a high level. I just can't wait to see what
- 34:03they can do, what they can do in the future.
- 34:07Yeah, I mean you know, we were we started following well, I
- 34:12shouldn't say following football, bit attending a lot of
- 34:14hockey football other hokey events in the 2000s.
- 34:18And definitely within that era it was definitely an
- 34:20afterthought you know, wrestling wasn't really even given given
- 34:24any sort of credence from a sports perspective in Virginia
- 34:29Tech Athletics. So the fact that it's built that
- 34:32much of a reputation that quick is really important.
- 34:35Oppressive and I love that the community's really kind of
- 34:38embraced that and jumped on board.
- 34:41Yeah. And it's great to see and eat
- 34:43and I think it's any time you get to the National prominence
- 34:45that quickly and when it's on television, which the ACC could
- 34:50do a better freakin job of. Because I last time we were on
- 34:54here, I ran and I don't understand how Cornell Virginia
- 34:59Tech was not on the SEC network. It was literally the number 7
- 35:02and the number 8 wrestling schools in the country.
- 35:05Going at it. It and instead, it was a
- 35:07freaking 3430 right there at 7:00 and it's just like terrible
- 35:11production, but, you know, give me, give me a few more drinks.
- 35:15I mean, I really go off on the SEC network.
- 35:17Yeah, we'll break out the thus, Pirtle tapes and lay them out.
- 35:22I shall hang on what this here before we get into some more fun
- 35:25topics tonight. We are going to take a quick
- 35:27pause for a message from our digital partners.

- 35:54Alrighty. So, Sheldon, thanks for staying
- 35:56with us for the rest of the time.
- 35:58And we are going to get into some hokey football.
- 36:00We are the boundary Corner. We are a Hokie Football podcast.
- 36:03Cast. It's fun to talk the other
- 36:06stuff. We love it.
- 36:07We love having guests. Like you on, you mentioned David
- 36:09Cunningham who's been on numerous times.
- 36:12We thought about bravery. You think we should bring David
- 36:14for the December episode one time?
- 36:15Run got to do it. You got.
- 36:18Yeah we got we got to get David Suburban with us.
- 36:21Exactly, let's talk football and let's talk portal because since
- 36:25the last time we come here, there was the end of the portal
- 36:27and there was some movement in the last few days and sort of a
- 36:30big move, I did not see coming. Bronze all coming but maybe you
- 36:35did. Shelton was Keyshawn, team
- 36:38enters the portal. You know, King coming off of,
- 36:40you know, solid season. Probably the best.
- 36:42He'd look, since being at Tech including his freshman year, you
- 36:46know, over 400 yards, rushing 100 yards.
- 36:50Receiving that is our code jump friend, Robbie Compton.
- 36:54Um let's let's show up and start with it run.
- 37:00When did you see this coming? Did you hear anything or were
- 37:03you shocked? That he decided to enter the
- 37:06portal. No, I was very surprised.
- 37:08I did not see that coming at all, you know, I thought King
- 37:11Elvis had a good season. For us last year.
- 37:14And I bring a year from, he was healthy, like he was easy time
- 37:17of the doghouse during the Clinton era, you know, for
- 37:20reasons that, you know, maybe some Justified, maybe not.
- 37:24But, you know, he's also got with injuries and so to see and
- 37:26have a breakout year. Like, this was pretty, pretty
- 37:29awesome. I think he, I don't like him as
- 37:31an every down to the back, I think he's just too small for
- 37:34that to the type of role. So I'm guessing maybe he saw.
- 37:36Kind of the writing on the wall, he saw the transfer is coming in
- 37:39and just felt like he wasn't really going to get the carries
- 37:41that he wanted. I'm not, you know, trying to
- 37:42project onto him. Just you know how it goes most
- 37:44of the time so let's pricing move.
- 37:46But you know in the long run if if if what people are saying
- 37:49about this inkling back from in C and T is true, I think it's
- 37:52not going to be the biggest deal in the world because we got
- 37:54some, got some studs at running back.
- 37:57Yeah. We were talking about that
- 37:58because if you're looking at, you got Thomas, you got now to
- 38:04Dan come in, who were going to talk about the second, you know,
- 38:06Keshawn King kind of becomes that more change of pace back.
- 38:10He's also probably impressed for some carries by Bryce.
- 38:13Is Dooku, kind of do similar type things and maybe coming
- 38:17into his own, in terms of, you know, being a little bit more
- 38:20durable than King is shown in his career.
- 38:24So when you kind of put all those pieces together it kind of
- 38:27makes sense for him to maybe look at another opportunity but
- 38:31let's go ahead and flip it over. Let's talk about Bay Schulte
- 38:34uddin Ali stud coming out of NC A&T.
- 38:40I mean stud Top 15 in the portal ranked by on three.
- 38:45He is the 15th ranked running back in the portal ahead of some
- 38:50guys. You know that played at ahead of
- 38:53Kobe Pace, right? About right with Kobe pay.
- 38:55Someone from Clemson to UVA the Penn State transfer.
- 39:00Where did it go? I'm on a new computer.
- 39:02So this is a pain in the but it doesn't do it.
- 39:03I want to do yet the key vonlee from pin ephiny, efforting
- 39:09efforting efforting, just the William Thomas that went from
- 39:1310. I see to Cal and come out.
- 39:16Nothing nothing Auntie was his only show the law for them. 24/7
- 39:21he's up at a pulse in New Jersey, 511 195, but I mean, you
- 39:26look at the tape and what he did at A&T last year stat-wise, I
- 39:32love the move. I love it.
- 39:35Yeah, and I mean I watch some tape on the kid.
- 39:37I mean he does a little bit of everything he can.
- 39:40He can catch some balls out of the backfield.
- 39:42Make guys missing space. He's really good at finishing
- 39:45runs. Has that next gear when he gets
- 39:48to the second level? Third level the defense where he
- 39:51can kind of pull away for the big run.
- 39:53So, kind of does a little bit of everything for us.
- 39:56I mean, I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do a little
- 39:59bit in the spring to kind of get a better feel of what he's going
- 40:02to do in this offense. You know, if he enrolled are ya,
- 40:08Dad, I do not know what were you about to say, I'm sorry, I was
- 40:17wrapping it up. So you're just kind of like, oh
- 40:20yeah, just like Brian saying I read French is a film review on
- 40:24the key play, you know, he's obviously he's physical, he's
- 40:26got some speed, he's elusive, I basically the since I got
- 40:29reading that piece was like, this is not a guy that should be
- 40:32planned at the FCS level, like he's a legit power 5 running
- 40:34back. So I think it kind of adds a
- 40:36lot. To that room.
- 40:38And like you said, you know, one of the top ranked one of the top
- 40:41during transfers and you add to that alley Jennings who I
- 40:44believe. According to on three was a
- 40:45tough, bring Spencer wide receiver.
- 40:47So you add those two guys, I mean, that's a pretty good
- 40:49transfer class. Like, I know, Bill Connelly,
- 40:51who, who does the SP plus rankings for football?
- 40:53He said, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Tech's transfer class
- 40:56was super impressive. So coming from a guy like him,
- 40:58like that's got to be High, Praise.
- 41:00Yeah. Absolutely.
- 41:01And it's and he also is talking about the return production on
- 41:03top of those transfer portal, guys.
- 41:05He he's got us here. Talking about us which, you
- 41:08know, I'm trying to temper the expectation.
- 41:10We still got to see what all the pieces look like together.
- 41:13So that's why we're tempering up expectations, but we actually
- 41:18have some pieces moving into the season whereas last year, was
- 41:23kind of like we got a hope a lot of things happen.
- 41:26We got a hope, a lot of things happen, right?
- 41:28And it didn't for us, but I feel like we, at least have pieces
- 41:32that are in place. Let's see if the coaches can get
- 41:34the scheme to where they can take advantage of those.
- 41:37And let's see these guys go out there and cook a little bit
- 41:39abso-freakin'-lutely. But speaking of getting to the
- 41:43season, before we do that, you got to go through winter
- 41:45workouts and clearly that is now on display social media team,
- 41:49doing a great job, showing the guys showing the workouts and
- 41:54then they started coming out with the little recognition
- 41:57every week in the winter workout.
- 41:59Tough athletes and thus far, Johnny Garrett, Jalen Stroman,
- 42:04Morel Pollard and Jaden Keller have a seat Really received the
- 42:08awards Brown, I let you leave. Who are you?
- 42:11Happy is to see on this list of essentially, crushing the winter
- 42:15workouts, can I hedge can, I can, I can, I, can I give you 1
- 42:19a 1 B? There is no one anyone but you
- 42:22got. All right, screwin Johnny
- 42:23Garrett, I knew you was going on.
- 42:28What? So why do I say, Johnny?
- 42:30Garrett, because we need tackle help.
- 42:33If Johnny Garrett can get to a point where he is, at least
- 42:36pushing Parker Clements coming into 2023.
- 42:41I feel a whole lot better about the offensive tackle situation
- 42:45than I felt last year because I feel like we at least have three
- 42:50legitimate guys that can at least give you something, they
- 42:55can least be that starting caliber player.
- 42:58Or whether they're going out there and beat the world.
- 43:01I don't know if we'll get to that point this year, and I
- 43:04don't think we will, but I just want to see confident offensive
- 43:07line, play consistent, offensive line play.
- 43:09Because we didn't see that a whole lot last year.
- 43:12So if Johnny Garrett can get to that point and push for a
- 43:15starting role in 2023, that'll be a big step forward.
- 43:17So seeing him getting some recognition, is a good start to
- 43:22that offseason. All right.
- 43:24What about you shell? Who are you?
- 43:26We do need dogs up front, who are you?
- 43:28Excited to see on that list. Sort of already making an
- 43:31impression on winter workouts. I would say Keller between
- 43:37between want to mention. I mean he's a stud the kind of
- 43:41lesson to stud man that linebacker room is is pretty
- 43:43good. I do have some insight scoop to
- 43:45report if I made my mouse inside of here.
- 43:49So I was at P K's on Saturday night after the Hokies, whenever
- 43:52Syracuse and Brent was in attendance.
- 43:55He may or may not have had several drinks and he may or may
- 43:58not have used several several four-letter words to describe
- 44:03the the state of that of that. Room and a very positive
- 44:06connotation, right. But only basically between
- 44:10Keller Lawson and I believe, McDonald is a third, a third
- 44:13linebacker. He thinks that line back room
- 44:15could be one of the best in the country in the coming years and
- 44:18I believe him like that. Those guys are just awesome and
- 44:20I love Kelly's, like range and versatility athleticism, the
- 44:23length and all that stuff, and and color as well too.
- 44:26So I'm super excited about about that room.
- 44:29Also, I love seeing all the names on here.
- 44:31I love, I love your inside scoop from P K's on Saturday night
- 44:34after cocktails with He's very, he's a very candid, Man.
- 44:38By the way? He, yes, time, we met him when
- 44:42he did, the party tailgate out there in Richmond and Hardy
- 44:45would so, yeah, we definitely, he definitely knows how to work
- 44:49a room. He definitely knows how to how
- 44:51to, how to play loose with with, with people that he knows he can
- 44:54play loose with, so I appreciate that for sure.
- 44:57Yeah, now y'all like those two. I'm going to tell you the guy, I
- 44:59like because it's somebody we mentioned in our Alpha Dogs
- 45:02episode and it's Jalen strowman. I told Brian.
- 45:05Ron, we discussed that eventually Jalen Stroman would
- 45:09be the leader of the D-Block. I see this.
- 45:12He is getting that way a lot quicker.
- 45:15We already saw him play on the field last year.
- 45:16He looked good in really his first significant amount of
- 45:19action especially those games when he was pressed to have to
- 45:22move back to free safety when Shamari came down to play
- 45:25nickel. And now, he's out here
- 45:27absolutely falling on winter workouts.
- 45:29We know the bloodline We know his brother essentially was a
- 45:34leader at the Block. That makes me excited in brown.
- 45:38I'll go ahead and say it too. It's all so excited to see
- 45:40Pollard up there because we talked about how Pollard
- 45:43probably is going to be the leader of the defensive line
- 45:45this year vocally. And so when you see that in
- 45:49Britain Prime mentioned it, last offseason, the winter workouts
- 45:52is where you figure out who your leaders.
- 45:54Are you figure out who your dogs are and when you see it's guys
- 45:57you know they're going to be on the field.
- 45:59A lot in someone like Johnny Gat who Look into the too deep of
- 46:02two times on the depth chart are in the season.
- 46:05That's what you want to see in my opinion.
- 46:09Yeah, it's definitely a big step forward, I think so.
- 46:12And we talked about it. We said we talked about in the
- 46:14last episode of the Alpha Dog episode.
- 46:15We were like these are the guys that are going to need to step
- 46:17up the offseason. It's nice to see three names
- 46:20that we mentioned in that episode already being recognized
- 46:24and then it's nice to see kind of that dark horse in Johnny
- 46:26Garrett taking a big step forward and hopefully it's not
- 46:30just something that's, you know, a workout Warrior type
- 46:32situation. They were going to start seeing
- 46:34that production carry over to what happens on the field.
- 46:38Lately, a couple other notes fontelle.
- 46:42Mine got paid. He got paid a lot.
- 46:47Well, dessert very well. Deserved the man, the man has
- 46:52eight, the 804 for lunch and dinner and he's doing some good
- 46:57work. Laying some Foundation out of
- 46:59the 75-72 gets a big bump from 150k up to 425.
- 47:08I like it. I mean, and if and when we look
- 47:10at the movement in the footprint, in terms of wide
- 47:15receiver coaches, that's also happened.
- 47:19It was it was both warranted and needed.
- 47:21Yes, it was. Yes, I'm lucky.
- 47:25You got to pick, you got to pay coach these, whatever good
- 47:27football team. I mean, I talk to you know, last
- 47:30year In a future piece, I did for the key play.
- 47:33I talked about how Tech fell behind sort of during this
- 47:35intense. In terms of, you know, their
- 47:36infrastructure. There are some, their financial,
- 47:38you know, back in the program. And one of those areas was
- 47:41coaching salaries. I mean, we just didn't we just
- 47:43weren't investing and coaching stars as much as we should have
- 47:45been. And so to see that kind of
- 47:47change is last couple years where we invested in this new
- 47:50staff. Now you give fontelle, mine's a
- 47:52guy who's been doing a great job, recruiting, you know, a
- 47:55three or 30 percent, raise, or whatever it is like.
- 47:58That's, I mean, that's that shows commitment, and I'm really
- 48:00excited because It shows that they're committed to having him
- 48:02here. And I also think with wide
- 48:04receivers like that's a, that's a position because, you know,
- 48:06that's kind of how You know, it's such an integral part of
- 48:10the offense, like you got to get at those studs here and you kind
- 48:13of open the passing game. If you want have a functional,
- 48:15we're going to functional offense.
- 48:17So it's a great, it's a great thing for found.
- 48:19Tell obviously, having for him, and certainly happy for Virginia
- 48:22Tech. Absolutely.
- 48:23And to make to the point on that case about the needing good wide
- 48:26receivers. It looked like they identified
- 48:29that after the off. So, after the season and weekly,
- 48:32you know, obviously the three guys in the portal with pretty
- 48:36quick moves, which I think this is Playing bass are very excited
- 48:39about and I have a feeling especially we know the alley
- 48:41Ginny's connection. We know how much he had probably
- 48:43in getting him here. As like you said, a top rated on
- 48:46three guy. So that was huge and he did
- 48:48deserve it. He's busting his ass.
- 48:51He's done great. Recruiting here.
- 48:52He started to put the wall around Richmond to where it's.
- 48:55Now he's getting everybody here it's can he get the next step?
- 49:00Can he get those top five top ten guys in the you know,
- 49:05Greater Richmond region and this Year.
- 49:09We'll see. He has the opportunity.
- 49:11He does have the opportunity this year.
- 49:13Yes. All right and one thing to add
- 49:15to that, one thing I had that real quick, obviously we know
- 49:18for gtex offense was terrible last year, but the fact that
- 49:21fontelle could convince a guy like Alec Jennings with just
- 49:23your eligibility left to come play for him.
- 49:25I think speaks volumes. She was recruiting.
- 49:27Look obviously recruiting is all about selling cars on a vision.
- 49:30And so, I think what you're kind of seeing is like he's coaches,
- 49:32can sell players on what the future is going to look like and
- 49:35even if they're not necessarily part of it.
- 49:37So I think I think that's me. X to the recruiting building on.
- 49:40Yeah, because I mean Jennings would have had a lot of
- 49:42opportunities elsewhere. He didn't have to come to a
- 49:44situation where Tech is coming off one of its worst offensive
- 49:48Seasons at least in recent history.
- 49:51If not in overall, I'll be teaching at the we had to go
- 49:54back 15 years. At least I really have any sort
- 49:58of comparable metric to look at in terms of offensive output.
- 50:02So the fact that he was able to sell that the fact that the
- 50:07other offensive churches were able to kind of put that
- 50:09together with what they were doing with a big push for
- 50:12drones, which seems like very calculated.
- 50:15Well, before we knew, what was going down with that, they had a
- 50:19vision, they had targeted guys that they really wanted to
- 50:22pursue and then they put it together.
- 50:24And, you know, we now have an offense that we can, at least
- 50:27say, all right, we've got some Talent.
- 50:29Let's, let's see how we can put all the pieces together, and if
- 50:32we can make that click a little bit, absolutely.
- 50:36Um, if Doesn't know, already spring game April, 15 3 p.m.
- 50:41Shelton. I'm assuming you'll be their
- 50:44work schedule permitting. Yes, work schedule permitting
- 50:47from you're making plans, right? Oh yeah, I'll be there.
- 50:51No doubt book it, I'm a coin flip, I don't know.
- 50:55Yeah, we've got kids stuff going on and anytime there's a lot of
- 50:58kids stuff going on. I usually have to lay on it
- 51:00because as much as I want to go to the spring game, I'm going to
- 51:04a game this year so I'll lay on the grenade and loose spring
- 51:07game. Something interesting ACC
- 51:09network is doing this year, they are not, I don't think they're
- 51:11showing any game live because there's so many on the same days
- 51:14that are overlapping all going to be on extra and then they're
- 51:16going to show them, I believe the subsequent days.
- 51:19So if you guys are looking to catch it after you, both go
- 51:22there and watch the game do that.
- 51:24Yeah, so there I think what they were trying to avoid is what
- 51:27they had last year where they were having, like, spring games
- 51:29played at night and shit like that.
- 51:32They were essentially saying it'll be on the SEC network
- 51:36extra if you want. want to watch it Live program by program and
- 51:41then if not if you if you just get the network then you'll see
- 51:45it when it airs, re-airs, whatever, one day, two days
- 51:48later, It makes us from a scheduling standpoint.
- 51:52Is that scheduling last year was a little bit Bonkers.
- 51:55I mean we probably got We got both screwed in terms of the
- 52:00day, but we got, I think we came out.
- 52:02Okay? In terms of the time.
- 52:04Yeah, but you know, it's tough. So they went to this, this, this
- 52:11model this year. Once again, the ACC doesn't know
- 52:14how to schedule shit, they don't like you.
- 52:18Like you've got dew point super early spring game every year.
- 52:22It's like there are four weekends in April that you could
- 52:25schedule these and you could get this This shit done, anything
- 52:29you want to add because it seemed like you were coming
- 52:31behind me. Sheldon with some know, they're
- 52:33what they're going to do is show a documentary about Wake.
- 52:35Forest is 1964 basketball, team hit the rim shot there.
- 52:41By the way, we got Robbie says he's going to try to go Braun.
- 52:45All right? So so Robbie, you're robbing me,
- 52:47man. Aren't you gonna drive to North
- 52:50Wilkesboro? Get him, and then go up.
- 52:51He's gonna have a shorter Drive than you meet me at Jason's me a
- 52:54ronin. Buddy Levar is going as well,
- 53:01but let's flip it. Brian, let's talk one last
- 53:03before we close out tonight. Let's talk about the ACC
- 53:06schedule was released yesterday. Best thing about the Hokie
- 53:10schedule was we knew who our first for opponent was based on
- 53:13the other leagues already having their schedule set?
- 53:17And you know we lead off with ODU on the second Labor Day
- 53:20weekend Purdue at home on the 9th and then back-to-back Road
- 53:25games at Rutgers and Marshall as the S4 and you know, subsequent
- 53:30everybody saw anybody seen it now from last night so I'll
- 53:33throw. What do you guys Sheldon?
- 53:36The slow with you. What's the toughest for game
- 53:39stretch of this season times 4 again stretched?
- 53:43Well let me pull it up real quick.
- 53:46I mean I would say once you start conference play you know I
- 53:52would say it was. Let's go September and October
- 53:54so pit Florida State Wake Forest.
- 53:58All right. Um, I mean that's, you know, I
- 54:01just, I never liked the match with pit.
- 54:02Like they've got a big physical defensive, like, we just, we
- 54:05don't play them very well. You know, obviously last year
- 54:07being a private primary example, you know, for to say it's the
- 54:11road and he's gone Mike Norvell, that's a really tough.
- 54:16I don't anticipate, you know, game like 2018 where they fumble
- 54:19the ball six times and we you know recover every single one of
- 54:22them so and he got wait for its now.
- 54:26Wake wake is Resting because they're listening to him Hartman
- 54:29but they have Mitch Griffiths who was as backup last year.
- 54:33I saw him in the view, my game is first game of the season
- 54:35actually played pretty well. I think he's got a good arm.
- 54:37There's going to be some sort of, you know, drop off there.
- 54:40But with Clausen I trust him to kind of get the most out of his
- 54:43offensive guys. So you know, that's a game where
- 54:45it's like you know you kind of got to be on your toes a little
- 54:47bit and then Syracuse kind of probably started off.
- 54:52Good locked. I think there are five a note
- 54:54taper off towards the end but there are team that you know you
- 54:56got to take seriously. So That's me, touch your ex that
- 54:58those games October. I mean, it's it's really tough.
- 55:02Yeah, I was looking at the schedule.
- 55:04I agree with you. In terms of the four game
- 55:06stretch, it's got to be there's first for to open ACC play and
- 55:10then looking at the schedule as a whole, you know, we really
- 55:14have a lot of we outside of Clemson is there.
- 55:18Really? Any sure thing in the ACC, like
- 55:21I feel like there's, there's not, I was like, I feel like,
- 55:25yeah, Florida State's probably the close close This because
- 55:28they're not retooling, as much as saying.
- 55:30NC State who also has probably a pretty good roster as well, but
- 55:33they're not retooling as much as they are.
- 55:36But just looking at it top to bottom.
- 55:38I mean you know pits bringing in obviously a new quarterback that
- 55:42is familiar with ACC play but at the same time is yeah,
- 55:47unfamiliar with the system, may be getting them early in
- 55:51conference. Play might be working in our
- 55:53favor but it's still, you know, a month into the season.
- 55:56Who knows with that? FSU are they back is FS you
- 56:00back. I think this is the season that
- 56:03kind of maybe answers that question.
- 56:06You know as you said you already talked about wake breaking in a
- 56:08new quarterback can Syracuse defense hold up enough.
- 56:12Without having an elite rushing attack or an elite rusher, I
- 56:15should say, you know, we'll see their Louisville.
- 56:20First year under Brom BC is kind of a clusterfuck in their
- 56:26retooling. They're probably the only I'm
- 56:28unsure thing. It's in Chestnut Hill.
- 56:31Damn it. It is in Chestnut Hill.
- 56:34So so you know they've got that in their corner, you know NC
- 56:38State is going to be playing with a new quarterback but
- 56:41they're still going to be a good team.
- 56:43They're still going to be good on defense.
- 56:44They are losing their most of their linebacking Corps.
- 56:48Those. So that's something to keep an
- 56:50eye on and those are the big time play makers, then you got
- 56:53UVA that maybe Edging towards dumpster fire, maybe, but they
- 57:01were much improved on defense last year.
- 57:02So we'll see if their defense takes another step or they can
- 57:05kind of, you know, figure take some time to figure it out on
- 57:10offense. They may be at that point at
- 57:11that point in the season. But there's so many question
- 57:13marks with just about every team, not being Clemson and
- 57:17maybe Florida State in this conference, all right, I'm going
- 57:20to say, I agree with two of the four.
- 57:23Y'all chose as the toughest for drain stretch.
- 57:26But I'm going to go this, I think it's Rutgers.
- 57:28Marshall Pittman Florida State. There's three Road games in four
- 57:32weeks and you got to play pit to shelters.
- 57:34Point plan, that big defensive line Rutgers is Greg Schiano.
- 57:38We know they are going to play an ugly brand of football,
- 57:41everybody even though it was Kyle flood his Protege.
- 57:44Everybody remembers the damn Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando,
- 57:48back in 2012 and what an ugly game that was.
- 57:51So you're going to get an ugly game up there with a defensive
- 57:54minded head coach, then you gotta go on the Road to
- 57:56Marshall. And, you know, they are going to
- 57:58be similar to ODU and anybody else we faced in state or a
- 58:02close proximity in the last five years, they are going to be.
- 58:05So up for that game, they are going to probably be sold out,
- 58:10just probably an insane atmosphere for them.
- 58:13Then you got to flip around, then you got to play pit, then
- 58:15you got to go to FSU and also put that stress because that is
- 58:19also a stretch where it could really break, or make or break
- 58:24the season. Because if you screw up and lose
- 58:29the Rutgers, or the Marshall game, which is very, very
- 58:32palpable, you could be going into the pit game, two, and two,
- 58:36or maybe even one in three. And then it's just like, okay,
- 58:40well now you got to beat pitted home.
- 58:42And look at the rest of the schedule.
- 58:45And that's kind of where I said, I that's why I consider it
- 58:48tougher than the other ones. Because at least we're getting a
- 58:52Thursday night and off a bye week.
- 58:54With Syracuse, at least Sam Harmon isn't playing I know you
- 58:57saw the kid play Sheldon versus VMI, but at least it's, it's not
- 59:02them at their best, we know clausen's against, but it's not
- 59:06them at their best. Besides, there was a three plus
- 59:08years starters. Exactly.
- 59:10Yeah. And tons of weapons all over the
- 59:12place or Boogie, really good defensive players.
- 59:16All right, let me, let me flip this.
- 59:19And and I feel like this is just, you know, it is what it
- 59:22is. What's gonna be the best home
- 59:24game this year? Or what were you thinking?
- 59:29They want to go to that next home game this year.
- 59:35Who do you produce weight Syracuse and State?
- 59:42Man I would say I probably go State just because I think
- 59:46they're good team. So you know, if you're that your
- 59:50top may be a top 25 team coming into company Lane Stadium late
- 59:53in the season and Shop a few wins go.
- 59:56Like I know what 6 + 6 + 4 before that, you know, it'd be a
- 1:00:01big win for us. That's a game where maybe if
- 1:00:04like if they come in with like a name to record and practiced
- 1:00:07beat that it's like, okay, now we're back as a program so
- 1:00:10that's the, I think. Sir potential, potentially very
- 1:00:14big thick, a big opportunity for us.
- 1:00:16All right. Well yeah I'm going to actually
- 1:00:21I'm gonna go pit just because of the history just because of its
- 1:00:27ACC opener there. I think there's a lot that's
- 1:00:30going to be kind of riding on that in terms of getting off to
- 1:00:33a good start in the ACC this year.
- 1:00:34So I'm gonna go pit. You know, I can definitely make
- 1:00:38a case for NC State and Purdue the only reason I'd lean away
- 1:00:42from Purdue because they replacing their coach.
- 1:00:44We don't really know what caliber team that's going to be
- 1:00:48but it's early in the season. So there's always He's that kind
- 1:00:51of hoping there's always that hype.
- 1:00:52So if they win their first game and coming to coming to Lane,
- 1:00:56especially after the season they had last year, there's going to
- 1:00:58be some some hype and build up behind that game as well.
- 1:01:01But I still just because of the history just because of the ACC
- 1:01:04opener and just because it's a team that I think we need to win
- 1:01:10because we haven't historically done that well against them in
- 1:01:13recent years. So I think it's going to be the
- 1:01:15big game. It's a good barometer for sure.
- 1:01:19It's a good barometer for sure. I'm gonna disagree with both of
- 1:01:23you, because regardless of who it is, anytime there's a
- 1:01:27Thursday night Lane Stadium game.
- 1:01:30It's the special game. Now, what the hope is, we're
- 1:01:34going into that game playing really well, because we do have
- 1:01:38about a week leading up to it after the Wake Forest game.
- 1:01:41So, it's that extra height because let's just be let's
- 1:01:45let's just call it what it is. If they could go into that game
- 1:01:48with two losses. After seven games and B, 5 and
- 1:01:532. Can you think about coming after
- 1:01:56the Wake Forest game and how people would be talking?
- 1:01:58Hey were five and two were playing.
- 1:02:00Well we chance to lock up a bulb, it right here on Thursday
- 1:02:04night where we wear, so many special moments have happened in
- 1:02:07the history of this program. So many special moments, And
- 1:02:13Sheldon, you're young. And this is, this is the great
- 1:02:15part about having you know how young you are.
- 1:02:16It's like the Quarry more game forever entrenched in our
- 1:02:20generation. I think someone like your age.
- 1:02:23Do you remember the Darren Evans game?
- 1:02:27In, or you was Darren Evans versus Maryland when he
- 1:02:31legitimately truck the safety. I mean he frequently and I
- 1:02:34wasn't for my time. Okay, album I can't remember how
- 1:02:40young man waiting. I'm waiting.
- 1:02:43I'm waiting, I'm waiting for my time.
- 1:02:45This is your mama. There you go.
- 1:02:47Take goes in 70 and squashes Syracuse, 63 7, and then you
- 1:02:52have the moment for Thursday night.
- 1:02:55Yeah. But I'd love to see us blow out
- 1:02:57of here again. That'd be.
- 1:02:58That'd be one of those days where I'm just 2016.
- 1:03:03It just absolutely dump-truckin Carolina.
- 1:03:06Just dump truck in that ass 55. What 5510?
- 1:03:10And it seemed like Ricky Walker's, everybody scoring a
- 1:03:13touchdown. It was just like God, I miss
- 1:03:15those days. I can off the high here.
- 1:03:20Toughest place to play this year.
- 1:03:23You already already know - Chestnut Hill Florida, State's
- 1:03:25going to be loud. Louisville's going to be banging
- 1:03:29Chestnut Hill early November, which we like 23 degrees because
- 1:03:34they're going to somehow put that game at ACC Network at
- 1:03:37night, and it's going to be the red bandana.
- 1:03:39Bridezilla going to be the red bandana game and I'm still going
- 1:03:45to lean away from that just because I feel like BC is just
- 1:03:49there going to be a notch below where they were overall Talent
- 1:03:54than they were last year. Even though I think they
- 1:03:56probably fill in some of the holes that roster had last year.
- 1:04:00I think they're probably better on the offensive line this year
- 1:04:04than they were last year, but I still think overall, they're
- 1:04:06going to be a notch down. I'm looking at FSU, You I think
- 1:04:10I think that's kind of the maybe the low-hanging fruit here, but
- 1:04:13I'm going to take it. The game is going to be high.
- 1:04:18There's going to be some swag surfing.
- 1:04:20There's going to be some some chops.
- 1:04:24There's going to be a whole lot of noise and I think it's going
- 1:04:27to be a big one. It's going to be a tough one,
- 1:04:28but if we can go down there and do some business, then,
- 1:04:32especially if we take care of business the weeks before.
- 1:04:35There's no start being some conversations, so That's fine
- 1:04:40Sheldon. Yeah, it's got to be for his
- 1:04:43statement. They've got they've got a stud
- 1:04:45quarterback coming back. They've got a good head coach
- 1:04:48and we combine that with with the atmosphere they have, I know
- 1:04:50people talk about BC but it's like when you're when you're
- 1:04:52playing a really good team in a pack environment like that's
- 1:04:55really tough. So I got to go FSU.
- 1:04:58All righty. One more thing before we kind of
- 1:05:01close it up here tonight. That's great to schedule.
- 1:05:04Let's kind of look at it because I mean, Florida, State's
- 1:05:07obviously, the big one like ice again, we're putting on it.
- 1:05:10But like, what you mentioned earlier, Brian, a lot of
- 1:05:13questions with a lot of these teams.
- 1:05:15A lot of questions. I mean, even on those days, you
- 1:05:17know, there's three there's four out of conference games, a lot
- 1:05:20of questions there. You know, where do we put this?
- 1:05:25You know, in terms of who were playing where we're playing on
- 1:05:27when we're playing them, where would you grade it Shelton.
- 1:05:32In terms of, I guess if you were to like excitability, I mean,
- 1:05:36how does he see? Personally, I know that just
- 1:05:38don't Arch. Maybe si si - like look, it's
- 1:05:41just, you know, Purdue and Rutgers and Marshall like how am
- 1:05:44I supposed to say? No to you made like that our
- 1:05:46Marquee game. Our Marquee home game is what
- 1:05:51Purdue? I mean, stay against just
- 1:05:53States, baby. Fatal pit.
- 1:06:02Yeah, I mean, come on like I just can't get excited for that.
- 1:06:04Sorry like I hope we win all the games man, but it's just like,
- 1:06:07this is not, this is not a schedule that gets my juices
- 1:06:10flowing. It definitely doesn't blow the
- 1:06:12skirt up. You know, when you look at it,
- 1:06:16there's no real, you know, we were kind of I think grasping
- 1:06:19for a marquee home game, right? We had to we were hoping that
- 1:06:23that we had to tie some other things into it for to really
- 1:06:27kind of build up a marquee home game.
- 1:06:32And when you look at it, you know, you got Purdue, it's a
- 1:06:35solid out of conference opponent, but it's not anything
- 1:06:38to like really get excited about and I feel like that's kind of
- 1:06:41what the schedule is. You know, other than maybe FSU,
- 1:06:45there's a lot of decent gains, but there's nothing that really
- 1:06:49you kind of circle on the schedule and say, I'm really
- 1:06:52looking forward to that. Yeah, I'm with going to see the
- 1:06:56sea do, maybe, maybe because we get Florida State.
- 1:06:59It's a c-plus schedule but it really We isn't in.
- 1:07:03And I think, for us, I think if it was Florida, I think if it
- 1:07:06was Florida State at home, You know, weight force on the road.
- 1:07:11It would probably get to the B category at least give you a
- 1:07:15b-minus. You got a murky home game.
- 1:07:18Well, just hold your horses because next year if y'all
- 1:07:21looked at next year yet I have but it's been so long, I
- 1:07:26couldn't tell you. Clemson is a home game in 2024
- 1:07:30away games at Duke and Carolina. It's also here.
- 1:07:34The out of conference opponent is Vanderbilt that's in
- 1:07:37Nashville. Which a lot of people have
- 1:07:40already started talking about Nashville, on Labor Day weekend,
- 1:07:46sign me up NFL stadium, I believe Jason, he knows all the
- 1:07:53good spots the next season, probably ranges that because you
- 1:08:00get both Clemson in Louisville at home.
- 1:08:03You know, you play off. We play three Carolina schools
- 1:08:05on the road. Wait, Duke and Carolina.
- 1:08:10So I think eventually we're going to see a good balance out
- 1:08:14where you're going to have some of those see pluses but you're
- 1:08:17going to be actually get some Aid - has to all right Brian it
- 1:08:20is 10:45 has anything broken. Since we started think Twitter,
- 1:08:27I haven't seen anything. I mean Lakers got to win.
- 1:08:29So no comment anything you say anything.
- 1:08:36Nope. All righty.
- 1:08:39Before we wrap it up the gentleman, we talk about all the
- 1:08:43time as our music guy Jason long.
- 1:08:46Jason long is a teacher down in the city of Roanoke.
- 1:08:49He teaches at Woodrow Wilson, Middle School.
- 1:08:51Jason is also the assistant wrestling coach down there and
- 1:08:55this week by the hair of our chinny chin Chin's.
- 1:08:59His team won the city Championship.
- 1:09:02So we want to shout out our buddy, Jason long, Roanoke, City
- 1:09:06champion wrestling for the middle school.
- 1:09:10You know, Jason's always been nice enough to let us use his
- 1:09:13music all these years. So in he's been our boy forever
- 1:09:17man. I've known Jason since the fifth
- 1:09:19grade fries almost and I've noticed a little school.
- 1:09:22So yeah, when we go we go back to the way back so it's awesome
- 1:09:26for him. I know he always tells us
- 1:09:29Usually a few of his wrestlers always head down when the Hokies
- 1:09:32are wrestling. And apparently, he's got one kid
- 1:09:34that he doesn't think his going to play you want to wrestle in
- 1:09:39further. He's going to potentially play
- 1:09:41football. He's been invited to some camps
- 1:09:44and we mean invited. He got the we're paying your way
