Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / Ep 21 - From Peasant to Royalty: Walking in Your True Identity
Transcript
- 0:09Welcome back to Unmasked, where we take off the filters and get
- 0:12real about faith, failure, and finding freedom.
- 0:14I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, a dad, veteran,
- 0:17author, and a man who's learned that God does his best work in
- 0:21the middle of our mess. Today, we're continuing our
- 0:24series Changing Your Stars, and this episode is called From
- 0:28Peasant to Royalty. Walking in Your true identity.
- 0:32If you've ever felt unworthy, disqualified, too broken, too
- 0:36flawed, or too ordinary for God to use this message, this
- 0:41episode is for you. Because today we're not talking
- 0:44about behavior. We're not even talking about
- 0:46performance or perfection. Today we're talking about
- 0:49identity. The kind that is given, not
- 0:53earned, The kind that rewrites your entire future.
- 0:57Let me ask you something. Do you believe that you're
- 0:59forgiven but still struggled to believe that you're valuable?
- 1:03Do you believe God loves you, but you don't really believe he
- 1:05likes you? Do you believe that grace saved
- 1:08you, but you're still not convinced grace can use you?
- 1:11If so, you're not alone. Many Christians live in the
- 1:15space between I am forgiven and I'm called.
- 1:18We accept salvation, but we never walk in identity.
- 1:21We know God wiped our record, but we still see ourselves as
- 1:25spiritual peasants. People who serve but don't
- 1:28belong. People who worship but are still
- 1:31unworthy. People who help others but we
- 1:33hide our own pain. People who genuinely love God
- 1:37but silently believe that God probably tolerates me more than
- 1:41he delights in me. I lived in that tension for
- 1:43years. For a long time, I served God
- 1:46from a place of quiet shame. Not outward shame, not public
- 1:49scandal, not exposed sin. Just a constant inner whisper.
- 1:54People don't know who you really are.
- 1:56You're not good enough. You're barely holding it
- 1:58together. You're not as strong as they
- 2:00think. Don't reach too high.
- 2:02Stay safe. Other people get to have
- 2:05purpose. You get to have survival.
- 2:07So I served, I helped, I created, I ministered, I
- 2:11encouraged others. But inside, I still felt like
- 2:14the peasant boy from A Night's Tale, watching the parade from
- 2:17the alley, longing, admiring, believing the dream was for
- 2:21someone else. Even after God began healing me,
- 2:24even after honesty brought freedom, even after I started
- 2:28seeing him rewrite my story, part of me still felt like that
- 2:32I didn't deserve a seat at the table, like I didn't belong
- 2:35among the Knights. Maybe you understand that
- 2:37feeling. Maybe you love God deeply, but
- 2:40you don't see yourself the way that He does.
- 2:42So one day I read a passage that I had read 1000 times, But this
- 2:47time it hit differently. The passage was first Peter 29.
- 2:51But you are chosen people, royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's
- 2:56special possession. Let me repeat that.
- 2:59Zen royal special. I don't believe that's
- 3:02accidental language. That is identity language.
- 3:05The Bible doesn't describe you as barely accepted, tolerated, a
- 3:09disappointment, a project God works on reluctantly, A Sinner
- 3:13he begrudgingly forgave. No, it describes you as royalty.
- 3:17Not metaphorically, not symbolically.
- 3:20Identity level royalty. Meaning if you believe in Jesus,
- 3:24you are not a peasant trying to earn a place, you've already
- 3:28been adopted into the royal family.
- 3:30Here's the part that most believers miss though.
- 3:33When Jesus saved you, he didn't just forgive you, he adopted
- 3:36you. Forgiveness says that you're not
- 3:38guilty. Adoption says as you belong.
- 3:41Forgiveness says that your past is erased, giveness erased.
- 3:45Adoption says your future is secured.
- 3:48Forgiveness says you may go. Adoption says please stay,
- 3:51you're mine. This means your old stars, your
- 3:55past, your background, your labels, your former identity.
- 3:59Those things don't define who you are anymore because God
- 4:02replaced your identity. He didn't patch it, he replaced
- 4:06it. Your old name wasn't improved,
- 4:09it was traded. Your old story wasn't polished,
- 4:12it was redeemed. Your old identity wasn't edited,
- 4:15it was buried. You didn't.
- 4:17You don't belong to your former world anymore, you belong to a
- 4:20Kingdom. At some point in my journey, and
- 4:23it wasn't a single moment, but a long slow conversation between
- 4:26me and God, I felt him saying, You're living like a forgiven
- 4:31peasant, but I called you to live like a redeemed son.
- 4:34And that terrified me because the moment that you accept
- 4:37identity, you become responsible for walking in it.
- 4:40And God began nudging me to do things that felt bigger than me.
- 4:44To be honest about my story when other people were saying keep
- 4:48quiet, to stop hiding, to lead from vulnerability, not image.
- 4:53To write a book when I didn't feel worthy of being heard.
- 4:56To share truths. That I was still learning myself
- 4:59to trust Him more than I trusted my fear.
- 5:02Writing my story, even in the general way that I share it,
- 5:05felt like stepping into the spotlight of a royal parade,
- 5:09barefoot and trembling. But the moment I obeyed, the
- 5:12moment that I stepped out of the shadows, the moment I trusted
- 5:15God with the parts of myself that I wanted to bury, I didn't
- 5:19feel like royalty. But I started to live like
- 5:21someone that God loved, not someone God merely tolerated.
- 5:25And identity follows obedience. Royalty follows surrender.
- 5:29Purpose follows transparency. So why do we struggle to believe
- 5:34we're royalty? Let me give you 4 reasons #1
- 5:38familiarity feels safer than freedom.
- 5:41Some people stay in bondage because at least it's
- 5:44predictable #2 shame feels deserved, identity feels
- 5:49unearned. We trust our guilt more than
- 5:52God's grace #3 religion tells us to behave, the gospel tells us
- 5:57to belong. Only one of those bring freedom
- 6:00#4 we've been conditioned to think that royalty is for better
- 6:05Christians. It's not.
- 6:06It's for sons and daughters, which includes you.
- 6:09Let me speak over you what God speaks over his children.
- 6:12You are chosen. You are beloved.
- 6:15You are wanted. You are valued.
- 6:18You are forgiven. You are adopted.
- 6:20You are royalty. You are a part of a holy nation.
- 6:24You are God's special possession.
- 6:26You aren't supposed to watch the parade, You're supposed to be in
- 6:30it. You are not called to admire.
- 6:32They're not called to admire the armor.
- 6:34You are called to wear it. You are not called to live under
- 6:37the identity that others gave you.
- 6:39You are called to walk in the identity that Christ purchased
- 6:42for you. I want to slow down here and
- 6:44give you some questions to think about wearing your life.
- 6:47Are you still living like a peasant?
- 6:49Is it in your confidence? Is it in your calling, your
- 6:52relationships, yourself worth your view of God?
- 6:56What lie has been telling you that you don't belong in God's
- 7:00family? What parts of you feel too
- 7:03ordinary to be used by God? What dream died because someone
- 7:08told you you can't change your stars?
- 7:11Sit with these questions. Write them down, give them to
- 7:14you again #1 Where in your life are you still living like a
- 7:18peasant? Is it in your confidence,
- 7:20calling, relationships, self worth, or your view of God #2
- 7:26What lie has been telling you that you don't belong in God's
- 7:29family #3 what parts of your life feel too ordinary to be
- 7:33used by God? And finally #4 what dream died
- 7:37because someone told you that you can't change your stars?
- 7:41After you've written those down, let the Holy Spirit speak into
- 7:44them. Sit there and pray and let the
- 7:47Holy Spirit speak into those questions for you.
- 7:50Because here's the truth that I want you to hold on to.
- 7:53You don't have to earn your identity.
- 7:55You only have to accept it. You don't have to pray your way.
- 8:00You don't pray your way into royalty.
- 8:02You don't behave your way into royalty, and you don't serve
- 8:05your way into royalty. You're a royalty because the
- 8:08Father, your father is the king. And royalty doesn't walk with
- 8:13its head down. It doesn't hide, it doesn't
- 8:15shrink, and it doesn't apologize for existing.
- 8:19Royalty steps forward. It carries purpose.
- 8:22Royalty walks in confidence, not arrogance, but identity.
- 8:26If you're wondering. OK Wes, how do I walk in this
- 8:29truth? Then let me give you 3 practical
- 8:32steps to answer that question. Number one, speak to yourself
- 8:36the way that God speaks about you.
- 8:39Stop repeating the names shame gave you at #2 surround yourself
- 8:43with people who reinforce your identity, not your fear.
- 8:47See, royal identity grows in royal community.
- 8:50So surround yourself with people who will speak into you with
- 8:54truth and reinforce your identity #3 take one step that
- 8:59scares you. Yes, I said that.
- 9:01Take one step that scares you. Identity becomes real when you
- 9:05act on it. Maybe for you it's starting
- 9:08counseling. Maybe the step is joining a
- 9:11group or serving in a ministry. Maybe it's sharing your story
- 9:15with somebody. Maybe it's starting a project
- 9:18that God's been whispering or just letting someone pray for
- 9:21you. Royal identity requires royal
- 9:23action. Remember that peasant boy
- 9:25watching the nights? Many of us are still standing in
- 9:28that alley, watching others live out their calling, believing
- 9:32that we're not worthy of the parade.
- 9:34But God. God isn't calling you to
- 9:35spectate. He's calling you to participate.
- 9:38He's calling you to step into the street, to put on the armor,
- 9:42to rise into your calling, and to walk like someone the King
- 9:46delights in. Because he does.
- 9:48He delights in you. Walk in that.
- 9:57Thanks for joining me today on Unmasked.
- 9:59If this episode helped you see yourself differently, if it
- 10:02reminded you of who you really are, please share this with
- 10:05somebody who needs the same reminder in the next episode.
- 10:08We're going to wrap up this series with an episode entitled
- 10:11You Can Change Your Stars Stepping Into God's Blueprint.
- 10:15Until then, remember that you are not a peasant hoping to be
- 10:19loved. You are royalty.
- 10:21You're already chosen, you're already valued, and more
- 10:24importantly, you're already His. Walk Like it.
- 10:28God bless you.
