Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Rescue operations are underway at this hour at multiple locations
- 0:03Speaker 1: throughout Ukraine following a barrage of Russian strikes overnight. Official
- 0:07Speaker 1: say at least eight people were killed across the country,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and that includes six near President Zelenski's hometown. More than
- 0:14Speaker 1: twenty others were wounded. Official say the death toll could
- 0:17Speaker 1: go up as they scrambled to reach people who could
- 0:20Speaker 1: possibly be trapped under this rubble. And all of this
- 0:29Speaker 1: on the same night that the ominous sound of air
- 0:31Speaker 1: raid sirens could be heard in neighboring Poland, which says
- 0:34Speaker 1: that an unidentified object crashed and caused explosion deep inside
- 0:38Speaker 1: its territory during those strikes, and this new video is
- 0:42Speaker 1: said to show a large crater at the crash site.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Russia's targets, including Kiev, where the attack demolished this market
- 0:49Speaker 1: and killed one person there. Claire Sebastian keeping an eye
- 0:53Speaker 1: on all those developments, she joins me live from London. Claire,
- 0:56Speaker 1: what if we could start with this unidentified projectile that
- 0:59Speaker 1: was reported in Poland? Is there any new indication on
- 1:03Speaker 1: the source of it? Possibly Russia?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Well, look, I think authorities in Poland and in Ukraine
- 1:10Speaker 2: likely as well, are still trying to work out exactly
- 1:12Speaker 2: what happened here, But what we know at this moment
- 1:15Speaker 2: is that the Polish military said overnight it was monitoring
- 1:18Speaker 2: at least a dozen it said missiles over western Ukraine
- 1:22Speaker 2: that they said could pose a threat to Polish airspace.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Then at one point after three o'clock in the morning,
- 1:28Speaker 2: they noted that one unidentified object had crossed into Polish airspace.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It then promptly disappeared from the radar, and Polish police
- 1:36Speaker 2: then said that they found wreckage, a crater and scattered
- 1:40Speaker 2: debris maybe in those pictures that we're showing now in
- 1:44Speaker 2: a village. We think we can show you a map
- 1:45Speaker 2: of roughly where that crater is located, about ninety kilometers
- 1:49Speaker 2: or so from the border, so this is fairly deep
- 1:52Speaker 2: into Poland mounting of course, the concern around this. The
- 1:56Speaker 2: Ukrainian Foreign Minister is saying that a Russian cage on
- 1:59Speaker 2: one cruise missile crossed into Polish territory. We don't know
- 2:03Speaker 2: if it's the same missile that made that crater. It's
- 2:06Speaker 2: still at this point an unidentified object that we're dealing
- 2:08Speaker 2: with here, and there's no way to know, of course,
- 2:10Speaker 2: if this was deliberate or targeted. These are cruise missiles,
- 2:13Speaker 2: if it was one, high precision weapons. But still that
- 2:17Speaker 2: work is still ongoing to determine what happened there. But
- 2:20Speaker 2: it does come after a spate of warnings from Poland,
- 2:24Speaker 2: from the Baltic countries, those closest to Russia of the
- 2:27Speaker 2: higher potential at this point in the war for Russian provocations,
- 2:31Speaker 2: hybrid or other types of attack. The Polish Prime Minister
- 2:34Speaker 2: don Or Tusk warned just a few weeks ago that
- 2:36Speaker 2: Poland was preparing for every scenario. He didn't want to
- 2:39Speaker 2: scare anyone, he said, but those intensive preparations were underway.
- 2:43Speaker 2: No reaction from NATO as of yet. Poland is, of
- 2:46Speaker 2: course a NATO member, but we are keeping an eye
- 2:49Speaker 2: out for that. And of course this highlights very clearly
- 2:52Speaker 2: the risks, the spillover risks of this war, especially as
- 2:56Speaker 2: these aerial attacks, these overnight aerial attacks escalate.
- 3:01Speaker 1: In terms of the latest strikes that we've seen launch,
- 3:03Speaker 1: specifically in Kiev. Clear I'm wondering if Vicobras have to
- 3:06Speaker 1: speed on what we're learning there.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So look, this was a pretty major overnight attack, even
- 3:13Speaker 2: with that projectile crossing into Polan, and we can't lose
- 3:15Speaker 2: sight of the damage that it was inflicted on Ukraine.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Multiple different areas of Ukraine were affected. And it comes,
- 3:20Speaker 2: of course, thirty six hours or so after President Zelenski
- 3:22Speaker 2: was in the White House with Donald Trump making an
- 3:25Speaker 2: urgent plea for more help when it comes specifically to
- 3:28Speaker 2: air defenses. I think it's notable because previously when we've
- 3:31Speaker 2: seen meetings between Trump and Zelensky, President Putin has tried
- 3:34Speaker 2: to get in and speak to Trump as well. We
- 3:36Speaker 2: didn't see that this time. Instead, we simply see more escalation,
- 3:40Speaker 2: this aggressive posture from the Russian sides. What we know
- 3:44Speaker 2: at this point about this attack is at least eight
- 3:46Speaker 2: people were killed, dozens more injured Across the country are
- 3:48Speaker 2: several notable incidents. In creevy Ree, which is Lenski's hometown,
- 3:52Speaker 2: a missile hit a residential home, killing five members of
- 3:56Speaker 2: one family according to officials there, including three children. And
- 3:59Speaker 2: I want to bring footage as well from Leviv all
- 4:01Speaker 2: the way over in western Ukraine. Dramatic video if we
- 4:04Speaker 2: can show it, of a boy being pulled out of
- 4:07Speaker 2: a damaged building. City authority say that he was born
- 4:09Speaker 2: in twenty twenty and he survived, but with fractures to
- 4:14Speaker 2: his leg, so very widespread. And of course we're in
- 4:16Speaker 2: the final days now of what is the deadliest month
- 4:20Speaker 2: for Ukrainian civilians since April of twenty twenty two.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Where we're joined now by Peters Almayav. He's a director
- 4:26Speaker 1: of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative. Peter's good to see you,
- 4:32Speaker 1: good morning, good morning to you. I wonder if we
- 4:35Speaker 1: could just get started with this. What we're now learning
- 4:37Speaker 1: is what you make of this unidentified projectile that hit
- 4:40Speaker 1: near a Polish village some ninety five kilometers west of
- 4:43Speaker 1: Ukraine's border, so that's certainly towards the country's interior. To
- 4:47Speaker 1: add to that, Ukraine's Foreign minister went on ix saying
- 4:50Speaker 1: that a Russian cruise missile went into Polish airspace. In
- 4:54Speaker 1: terms of what we know, even if it was unintentional,
- 4:58Speaker 1: could that come with some natal consequence is for Russia.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Probably not, And that's precisely why Russia is doing it.
- 5:07Speaker 3: If it's doing it, we don't have one hundred percent
- 5:10Speaker 3: confirmation of that yet, but it's quite likely and it's
- 5:13Speaker 3: happened before over Polish air space, over the airspace of Romania,
- 5:17Speaker 3: that Russia is actually provoking these countries like it may
- 5:22Speaker 3: have been in this case to once again proved that
- 5:25Speaker 3: NATA will simply sit doing nothing. I mean, there's this
- 5:28Speaker 3: mechanism Article five Collective Security that dictates that a strike
- 5:32Speaker 3: against one NATO member is a strike against them all.
- 5:36Speaker 3: They would have to respond. But Putin is sort of,
- 5:39Speaker 3: you know, skirting around the edges with plausible deniability that
- 5:43Speaker 3: it's not his missile, while at the same time showing
- 5:46Speaker 3: NATO up for what it is and in effectual as
- 5:49Speaker 3: put In at least believes organization that will not stand
- 5:52Speaker 3: up for its members. So this may have been yet
- 5:54Speaker 3: another such provocation and a test.
- 5:58Speaker 1: What do you make of the time in ow so
- 6:00Speaker 1: when it comes to these latest barrage of Russian strikes
- 6:03Speaker 1: against uh not throughout parts of Ukraine, including where you
- 6:07Speaker 1: are there in Kiev. I mean the timing of this.
- 6:09Speaker 1: This is just days after President Zelensky had what's been
- 6:12Speaker 1: described by the US and Ukraine as a positive meeting
- 6:16Speaker 1: with President Trump.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Not just the timing, but let's start with the geography.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I mean, the entire territory of Ukraine was struck. It
- 6:24Speaker 3: seems like Putin had been accumulating enough missiles and drones
- 6:30Speaker 3: to attack the entirety of Ukraine, including the westernmost town
- 6:34Speaker 3: noble Viv, which is has been kind of a hubb
- 6:37Speaker 3: of that whole area for the processing of Western supplied weaponry.
- 6:42Speaker 3: That's probably another signal from Putin. But if we look
- 6:48Speaker 3: at the timing, it happened after by all accounts, Zelenski's
- 6:55Speaker 3: triumphant visit to Washington, at least, you know, judging or
- 6:59Speaker 3: comparing with the low standard of that meeting last year
- 7:02Speaker 3: when Trump said that Zelenski had no cards. Well, this time, uh,
- 7:07Speaker 3: this was quite a triumph. And it looks like the
- 7:10Speaker 3: spirit of anchorage. Whatever the Russians are, you know, continuing
- 7:13Speaker 3: to refer to whatever, you know, agreements there may have
- 7:18Speaker 3: been between Puttin and Trump, they're no longer there. They
- 7:24Speaker 3: have evaporated. And so Putin is really seething, uh, that
- 7:29Speaker 3: he's lost the initiative, not just on the front lines
- 7:33Speaker 3: but internationally. Uh. And of course let's not forget that,
- 7:37Speaker 3: you know, you know, Ukraine has found an ability to
- 7:41Speaker 3: strike ever deeper into Russia. Russia is burning practically every day.
- 7:47Speaker 3: All refinery facilities are going up in smoke. Logistical hubs
- 7:51Speaker 3: are going up in smoke. This is a way for
- 7:53Speaker 3: Puddin once again to assert himself, to show his strength,
- 7:57Speaker 3: and he has no other options but to escalate and
- 8:00Speaker 3: increase terror against civilians because the situation on the front lines,
- 8:05Speaker 3: like I said, is static, the advance is very slow.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Putin cannot and has not been able to show any
- 8:11Speaker 3: spectacular successes there.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Peter's in mid If. We wish you continued safety of course,
- 8:17Speaker 1: as we continue to follow this. Thank you Peter
