- 1:23Speaker 1: and also... Moving ahead, of course, we've got a great
- 1:29Speaker 1: group of games coming up this weekend with Mississippi State
- 1:31Speaker 1: hosting Alabama. That's a headliner game as well. Let's go
- 1:34Speaker 1: ahead and bring Robbie in, and don't leave him waiting.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Robbie Falk on your screen. Make sure that you follow
- 1:40Speaker 1: him on X at State. Robbie Falk, 1878. Robbie, good
- 1:46Speaker 1: to see you Friday, brother. How are you doing?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yeah, doing great, man.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Great to see you. Had a good weekend. Great ball
- 1:51Speaker 4: game on Friday night. I thought Brandon's start was really good.
- 1:55Speaker 4: and just kicked us off for what was a fantastic weekend.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Great weekend.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I hope you had a good time as well.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Oh, man, absolutely. No, absolutely. I thought Friday was fun.
- 2:05Speaker 1: You know, let me ask you this before we get
- 2:07Speaker 1: into state. I thought Starkville was one of the more
- 2:10Speaker 1: complete teams that I'd seen this year. I know there's
- 2:12Speaker 1: still kind of a growth there. I love what Coach
- 2:15Speaker 1: Morgan is doing there. Tupelo looks to be kind of
- 2:18Speaker 1: in its own league right now, so I got a
- 2:20Speaker 1: chance to see them week one. Any chance you think
- 2:23Speaker 1: that Starkville by– late November, could catch Tupelo?
- 2:28Speaker 3: That's an interesting question.
- 2:30Speaker 4: I'm very interested to see how they look in that
- 2:34Speaker 4: matchup because inevitably they will meet. They met every year, obviously,
- 2:40Speaker 4: when they were in the same district. And it seems
- 2:41Speaker 4: like when they're not in the same district, they're meeting
- 2:43Speaker 4: in the playoffs at some point.
- 2:45Speaker 3: And Tupelo's gotten the upper hand a couple of times.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Starville won the North State Championship up there a few
- 2:51Speaker 4: years ago before they went on and won the state title.
- 2:54Speaker 4: The problem is they have that talent gap, I feel like.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I mean, there's a lot of talent at Starkville, but
- 3:02Speaker 4: there's that talent there where there's six or seven guys
- 3:08Speaker 4: that could potentially be in the SEC at Tupelo. Like
- 3:12Speaker 4: you said, kind of league of their own. The thing
- 3:15Speaker 4: is you can catch Tupelo slipping every now and then,
- 3:18Speaker 4: it seems like. The problem that they have– And this
- 3:22Speaker 4: is what Ty Harden was, like, really pushing against whenever
- 3:26Speaker 4: they changed the districts.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Their district is going to be so bad. Yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 4: A lot of times you get caught sleeping once you
- 3:33Speaker 4: get in the playoffs. And that's the thing with– even with,
- 3:36Speaker 4: you know, Brandon's district that they're in, which is in
- 3:39Speaker 4: a different part of the state, but Starkville is going
- 3:42Speaker 4: to play, you know, Madison Central and Germantown. And, you know,
- 3:46Speaker 4: Clinton's always tough. They always put up a fight, so
- 3:50Speaker 4: every week's going to be a good game, a good battle,
- 3:54Speaker 4: and Tupelo's just going to roll through theirs.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I don't know. We'll see.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I thought Starkville was a little sluggish the other night
- 4:04Speaker 4: at times. They had a lot of guys with the flu,
- 4:07Speaker 4: and I'm not making excuses.
- 4:08Speaker 3: I thought Brandon went.
- 4:09Speaker 4: And made the plays when they needed to be made there,
- 4:12Speaker 4: but they did have a rough week. So we'll see
- 4:15Speaker 4: when they're fully healthy and back on track and when
- 4:18Speaker 4: they have 10 games in to Brett Morgan, we'll see
- 4:22Speaker 4: what they look like.
- 4:23Speaker 1: There's no doubt. One of the things that is true
- 4:25Speaker 1: with Mississippi State is that Anthony Evans is an absolute
- 4:31Speaker 1: game changer. The catch the other night, the stretch out catch,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and I'm going to tell you what, to me what's
- 4:36Speaker 1: more impressive, and this is just my feeble football brain,
- 4:40Speaker 1: the fact I don't see a lot of guys, maybe
- 4:42Speaker 1: Malachi Toney at Miami, right now, and maybe one more.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And I'd have to look for the one more that
- 4:47Speaker 1: can catch a screen pass and get up a sideline
- 4:51Speaker 1: like he can. That's an automatic five. I mean, cause
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know, you know this, you got to throw a
- 4:56Speaker 1: screen pass, right? You know, you, you got to throw
- 4:59Speaker 1: it and leave it. Camario Taylor puts so much zip
- 5:01Speaker 1: on the ball. When Evan steps off the line, he
- 5:05Speaker 1: doesn't have to wait. He doesn't have to pause. That
- 5:07Speaker 1: is a five yard pickup. I mean, the kid is so,
- 5:10Speaker 1: so fun to watch.
- 5:12Speaker 4: I give Jeff Lebby a ton of credit on these
- 5:13Speaker 4: wide receivers because these are guys that almost all of
- 5:18Speaker 4: them had very little production when he brought them in.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Marquise Johnson is probably the most productive receiver that they've
- 5:26Speaker 4: picked up since Jeff Lebby's been here. That was a
- 5:29Speaker 4: guy that was about 300 plus yards a year. I
- 5:33Speaker 4: think he had 1,000 yards in his career at Missouri.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Anthony Evans had 10, 12 catches at Georgia, you know,
- 5:42Speaker 4: was kind of a guy that they brought in late
- 5:43Speaker 4: in ball games. He didn't have a lot of opportunities.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Jeff Levy has been so good at identifying, evaluating the
- 5:51Speaker 4: talent that fits his offense. And once those guys get here,
- 5:56Speaker 4: you see what this offense can do for them. He
- 5:59Speaker 4: did it with Kevin Coleman. He did it with Vernon Thompson,
- 6:02Speaker 4: who had not really done anything at Oklahoma other than some,
- 6:05Speaker 4: you know, running as fast as he could down the
- 6:08Speaker 4: field and making some big catches. And he's done it
- 6:10Speaker 4: with Anthony Evans. He's made those guys wide receiver one.
- 6:13Speaker 4: So they went from very little production to one of
- 6:17Speaker 4: the most productive wide receivers in.
- 6:19Speaker 3: The entire league.
- 6:20Speaker 4: And Anthony Evans, he was good last year. I feel
- 6:25Speaker 4: like he's taken that extra step forward this year. And,
- 6:28Speaker 4: you know, he's a guy, he's got speed. He's got
- 6:31Speaker 4: some wiggle to him. You know, he's a tough guy
- 6:34Speaker 4: to tackle in space. So he will get yards after catch.
- 6:38Speaker 4: He's a little different receiver than what we saw from
- 6:40Speaker 4: Brennan Thompson last year, who was just a lot of
- 6:42Speaker 4: times just kind of a go-route guy or a post pattern.
- 6:46Speaker 4: This is a guy that you can throw some screens to.
- 6:48Speaker 4: You can put him in the slot. You can put
- 6:50Speaker 4: him on the outside, and he can go make a
- 6:52Speaker 4: play for you. And that full extension dive in the
- 6:56Speaker 4: fourth quarter was just sick.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It was. We have not seen that at Mississippi State.
- 7:03Speaker 4: We haven't seen the spectacular catch here very often, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 4: Eric Moulds made some great catches back in the day.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Outside of that, we just have not seen that guy
- 7:14Speaker 4: that can go make a play like that.
- 7:17Speaker 3: That was just going and winning a ballgame. That's just
- 7:19Speaker 3: winning plays.
- 7:21Speaker 4: And he said today he didn't think he was going
- 7:23Speaker 4: to be able to catch that, but he said, I
- 7:26Speaker 4: just wanted to go make a play for my team.
- 7:28Speaker 4: And when you got guys like that on your team, man,
- 7:32Speaker 4: you got some special things in the tank.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you got my mind turning now. You mentioned Eric Moulds,
- 7:38Speaker 1: obviously Evans in the catch the other night. Deronye Wilson,
- 7:41Speaker 1: rest in peace, was such a big body wide receiver.
- 7:43Speaker 1: You know, Dak could get that ball on that back
- 7:45Speaker 1: shoulder fade and get it down to that post route,
- 7:47Speaker 1: but that's a different type of wide receiver. Kevin Prentice,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you know, was as, you know, some framed him up
- 7:54Speaker 1: lightning in a bottle at times, but you're right. What
- 7:57Speaker 1: Evans can do from the screen game to you can
- 8:00Speaker 1: move this guy around. Again, I compare him a lot
- 8:02Speaker 1: to Malachi Toney. who I think is the best player
- 8:05Speaker 1: personally in college football, just because how much of a
- 8:08Speaker 1: threat he is. You're seeing State use Evans in a
- 8:11Speaker 1: variety of ways.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Yep, and San Francisco McGee is kind of a revelation
- 8:16Speaker 4: right now. That is a guy I saw a pic
- 8:20Speaker 4: circulating around. I remember that picture specifically. It was an
- 8:27Speaker 4: official visit when Jeff Levy first got here, and you
- 8:30Speaker 4: see all these wide receivers and Daniel Hill was in there, too.
- 8:34Speaker 4: It was these in-state skill players that Mississippi State was
- 8:38Speaker 4: trying to lock all of them down. And I think
- 8:40Speaker 4: Mario Craver was in there, too. He came over from
- 8:42Speaker 4: Alabama right after his state championship game. And they landed
- 8:46Speaker 4: all those guys except for Daniel Hill, and now every
- 8:49Speaker 4: single one of them is gone except for Sam Frisco.
- 8:51Speaker 4: And that was the guy that was most slept on
- 8:54Speaker 4: in that wide receiver class.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Nobody was really high on him.
- 8:58Speaker 4: He was going to Ole Miss essentially– And then things
- 9:02Speaker 4: kind of fell apart there. He ended up opening his
- 9:04Speaker 4: recruitment back up. That was a guy Zach Arnett was
- 9:08Speaker 4: really high on wanted in the process. And he came
- 9:11Speaker 4: back around to Mississippi State. I remember thinking, like, is
- 9:15Speaker 4: this guy a safety? I don't know if he's going
- 9:17Speaker 4: to play receiver on the next level. A testament to
- 9:21Speaker 4: just putting in the work, going to work every day,
- 9:24Speaker 4: being the same every single day and getting better. And
- 9:28Speaker 4: it's really paying off. I mean, right now that's your
- 9:30Speaker 4: second best wide receiver is San Francisco McGee. And he
- 9:33Speaker 4: made two incredible plays the other day, went and won
- 9:37Speaker 4: the ball game for them there in the fourth quarter.
- 9:40Speaker 4: So I love seeing that kid show out because he's
- 9:43Speaker 4: a state of Mississippi kid.
- 9:45Speaker 3: He was a three-star kid.
- 9:47Speaker 4: That's like the old school Mississippi State way right there,
- 9:49Speaker 4: what San Francisco McGee's doing.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Let me give you some numbers real quick. I know
- 9:53Speaker 1: you know this, but just for people that may be
- 9:55Speaker 1: watching or see this after we're done. Jeff Levy, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 1: first year, 25.8 points per game, gave up 34. Last year,
- 10:02Speaker 1: 30 points per game, or 30.4 and 30.2. So, essentially,
- 10:06Speaker 1: anytime we know this is you see numbers that close
- 10:08Speaker 1: on the O & D, you're right at a 6-6 team,
- 10:11Speaker 1: and State was, you know, right there. So far through
- 10:14Speaker 1: a month, 43 points per game, giving up 21 points
- 10:18Speaker 1: per game. Boy, I tell you what, just that trend
- 10:22Speaker 1: in one month. And I tell everybody, because people have
- 10:24Speaker 1: said on my show, well, 4-0, you know, they were 4-0.
- 10:27Speaker 1: This 4-0 is not last year's 4-0. Going on the
- 10:30Speaker 1: road to Minnesota, going on the road to South Carolina,
- 10:33Speaker 1: beating a ranked Missouri team, much different than last year.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Through the first month, this team is head and shoulders
- 10:40Speaker 1: over anything Jeff Levy's had.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're using that transitive property from last year
- 10:45Speaker 4: and saying, well, they went 4-0 last year, You're just
- 10:47Speaker 4: not watching the team play. This is a totally different
- 10:51Speaker 4: team than what we saw last year. We've talked about that.
- 10:54Speaker 4: But we knew it was going to be that way, Jake.
- 10:57Speaker 4: I didn't know if they would get to 4-0. I
- 11:00Speaker 4: felt like they would be, at this point, 3-1 or
- 11:05Speaker 4: somewhere around there because I thought they would beat Missouri
- 11:08Speaker 4: and I thought they would beat Minnesota. But the South
- 11:09Speaker 4: Carolina game was the one that I had up in
- 11:12Speaker 4: the air. But I think after seeing this team, you
- 11:14Speaker 4: see the intensity they play with on defense. And as
- 11:17Speaker 4: I'll say about this defense, they're not perfect. The past
- 11:20Speaker 4: defense numbers are not very impressive, but I don't think
- 11:24Speaker 4: that really tells the story about this defense at this
- 11:27Speaker 4: point because they force some teams to throw the football
- 11:30Speaker 4: a lot.
- 11:31Speaker 3: And there's not a lot of explosives against them.
- 11:34Speaker 4: The defensive secondary is– very much competitive back there. We
- 11:39Speaker 4: saw 15 pass breakups in that game against Missouri. That
- 11:43Speaker 4: means that your guys are in position and they're defending
- 11:47Speaker 4: the ball pretty well. I thought Austin Simmons was really good,
- 11:51Speaker 4: but he also should have thrown four or five interceptions
- 11:55Speaker 4: in that game. I think you look at it, you
- 11:57Speaker 4: have a difference maker at quarterback. You are significantly better
- 12:01Speaker 4: on the offensive side of the ball. They got to
- 12:03Speaker 4: where they were a little one-dimensional at times last year.
- 12:06Speaker 4: especially when Fluff Bothwell went down with an injury. So
- 12:10Speaker 4: you've got a difference maker at quarterback. Your offensive line
- 12:13Speaker 4: is better, although you have some issues there at left tackle.
- 12:16Speaker 4: And your defense is so much better. Those numbers are
- 12:20Speaker 4: going to fluctuate, and they'll probably come down a little
- 12:22Speaker 4: bit on offense and go up a little bit on defense.
- 12:25Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, I think this
- 12:27Speaker 4: is a much better team. And we're going to find
- 12:30Speaker 4: out Saturday how much better. If they go out and
- 12:32Speaker 4: they beat Alabama on Saturday– This is a bona fide
- 12:37Speaker 4: playoff contender. I mean, if you look at the rest
- 12:41Speaker 4: of the schedule, I think two losses.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Give you a little bit of breathing room.
- 12:48Speaker 4: But if you get through these first five with a win,
- 12:51Speaker 4: you can afford to drop a couple of games to
- 12:53Speaker 4: some really good teams here down the stretch. And you
- 12:55Speaker 4: feel good about games like Oklahoma, Auburn, Vanderbilt. So all
- 13:00Speaker 4: of a sudden, you're staring down the middle of a
- 13:02Speaker 4: potential playoff team That's what's, to me, on the line
- 13:06Speaker 4: this weekend. I don't think the season's over if they lose,
- 13:09Speaker 4: but I think what is on the line this weekend
- 13:11Speaker 4: is you win this ballgame, you are very much a
- 13:14Speaker 4: contender at that point.
- 13:16Speaker 1: No, I would agree. And looking at some of the
- 13:17Speaker 1: projections that you see from the staples of the world
- 13:19Speaker 1: and the big national media who do these playoff reports,
- 13:22Speaker 1: you know, kind of their projections, states starting to make
- 13:24Speaker 1: into that first four out in their polls. And, you know,
- 13:28Speaker 1: you're starting to see ESPN Analytics today populate state with
- 13:31Speaker 1: a 25% chance now to make the playoff where it
- 13:34Speaker 1: was less than a percent when the season started. So
- 13:36Speaker 1: to your point, you beat Alabama, you're, you're in the
- 13:39Speaker 1: game and let's, let's shift over to Alabama. Kalen DeBoer
- 13:42Speaker 1: has not been good on the road at Alabama. Very,
- 13:44Speaker 1: very average, something about playing away from Tuscaloosa and I
- 13:48Speaker 1: get it playing away from Tuscaloosa or anybody it's difficult,
- 13:51Speaker 1: but he's, you know, struggled with Kentucky a couple of
- 13:53Speaker 1: weeks ago for a half. You look back at last year,
- 13:57Speaker 1: should have lost at South Carolina, you know, in several
- 13:59Speaker 1: other games for whatever reason. Now, Obviously, they bring in
- 14:02Speaker 1: a really good team. They're scoring the football at a
- 14:05Speaker 1: high rate, 48 a game, giving up 20. But this
- 14:08Speaker 1: will be probably, for Keelan Russell, who's got eight touchdowns
- 14:12Speaker 1: and two picks, the most, you know, if the weather
- 14:15Speaker 1: can hold off, and I'm hoping the rain is, you know,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I know it's supposed to rain on Saturday, but it can,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know, this thing will move out here. This will
- 14:21Speaker 1: be an environment probably better than what he was in
- 14:24Speaker 1: against Kentucky. So it's going to be fun to see
- 14:26Speaker 1: how State matches up with Keelan Russell and the Alabama
- 14:28Speaker 1: football team.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Yeah, numbers have been really impressive for him, and he's
- 14:32Speaker 4: really handled this really well.
- 14:34Speaker 3: It's interesting.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You have these like three straight weeks here where you've
- 14:38Speaker 4: had that matchup at quarterback. You know, Lenore Sellers failed
- 14:43Speaker 4: it in their matchup with Camario. I thought Austin Simmons,
- 14:47Speaker 4: to me, probably overperformed what I expected out of him.
- 14:50Speaker 4: I thought that it would be difficult for them to
- 14:55Speaker 4: consistently– perform on offense, and State did limit them a
- 14:59Speaker 4: little bit, but I didn't think they were going to
- 15:02Speaker 4: be able to run the football near what they did
- 15:05Speaker 4: last year, and they didn't. They didn't have a 100-yard rusher.
- 15:09Speaker 4: They were under 200 yards rushing. State did what they
- 15:11Speaker 4: needed to do in the run game, and I thought
- 15:13Speaker 4: putting it on his shoulders, he was going to make
- 15:15Speaker 4: some mistakes, and he probably should have.
- 15:18Speaker 3: State probably should.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Have stepped up and made some plays there, but he
- 15:21Speaker 4: made some big-time throws in that game, and He has
- 15:24Speaker 4: a guy that he's been playing football with for three
- 15:26Speaker 4: or four years now in Caden Lee. The connection is there.
- 15:30Speaker 4: He had a great game, 11 catches. But now you
- 15:34Speaker 4: turn the page here to Keelan Russell. He's got some
- 15:36Speaker 4: wide receivers that are really good. They've been a little
- 15:40Speaker 4: more of a pass-heavy team so far earlier this year.
- 15:44Speaker 4: So State, again, going to be tested in the secondary.
- 15:48Speaker 4: We'll see if they got Isaac Smith. That will be
- 15:51Speaker 4: a big loss for State if they don't have Isaac
- 15:53Speaker 4: long-term because of his leadership. He's so good tackling in
- 15:57Speaker 4: space and coming downhill if he's needed. That's just an
- 16:01Speaker 4: extra piece that you don't have. State's going to have
- 16:04Speaker 4: to play really good football to win this game. I
- 16:08Speaker 4: don't think that Bama's going to be as sharp as
- 16:12Speaker 4: they were this past week playing on the road, but
- 16:15Speaker 4: I do think that this is a game that if
- 16:18Speaker 4: state is playing a B game or especially a C game,
- 16:22Speaker 4: they don't have a chance. I mean, they have got
- 16:25Speaker 4: to clean up this stuff that's been plaguing them a
- 16:28Speaker 4: little bit the last few weeks. They've gotten over it
- 16:30Speaker 4: because the quarterback play has been so spectacular down the stretch.
- 16:34Speaker 4: And there's been so many great plays from the receivers
- 16:37Speaker 4: and all, but they've got to clean up this penalties
- 16:41Speaker 4: and their issues that left tackle and, I thought the
- 16:44Speaker 4: kick game was not very good last week as far
- 16:47Speaker 4: as covering kicks and punts. They've got to clean that
- 16:50Speaker 4: stuff up if they want to win this game on Saturday.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree with that. And, you know, you
- 16:55Speaker 1: look at turnover margin, Alabama right now at plus five,
- 16:58Speaker 1: Mississippi State at minus one. And like you said, I mean,
- 17:01Speaker 1: they've been able to overcome some of this, and they've
- 17:03Speaker 1: got to correct this if they're going to make now
- 17:05Speaker 1: that next step. Because as you said, I mean, there
- 17:08Speaker 1: are winnable ballgames down the stretch. I mean, look, Oklahoma,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and we knew this, In the league, there's always going
- 17:13Speaker 1: to be teams that do what we think, and then
- 17:15Speaker 1: there's going to be some that underachieve, and then some
- 17:17Speaker 1: that overachieve. Oklahoma, Texas A & M, big underachievers right now,
- 17:22Speaker 1: and they don't look good. State, I don't want to
- 17:24Speaker 1: call them an overachiever, but at least at this point,
- 17:26Speaker 1: they are overachieving to expectations settled by the national media.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So there's a place to go get, because Oklahoma and
- 17:36Speaker 1: Texas A & M were both college football playoff teams
- 17:38Speaker 1: last year. So as you said, if State can clean
- 17:41Speaker 1: this up, this is– And I'm sure Jeff Levy, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: they don't want to overcomplicate things and put too much pressure,
- 17:46Speaker 1: but I'm sure they know what's at stake this weekend.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Yeah, and you're way ahead of schedule here because this
- 17:52Speaker 4: was supposed to be kind of, at least for people
- 17:55Speaker 4: like me and you and people that follow State, if
- 18:00Speaker 4: State was doing what they needed to do this year
- 18:03Speaker 4: and taking a step forward, this was supposed to be
- 18:05Speaker 4: that build, that third-year build, where you prepare yourself when
- 18:09Speaker 4: you have this generational guy quarterback for next year where
- 18:14Speaker 4: you really are a college football playoff contender if you
- 18:16Speaker 4: put the right pieces around him. And if he does
- 18:18Speaker 4: what he's supposed to do, you have those pieces.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Coming your way.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Well, now you've kind of moved into you have an
- 18:25Speaker 4: opportunity probably this week and moving forward that you can
- 18:29Speaker 4: contend this year.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Like you have pieces this year to do something.
- 18:33Speaker 4: I don't think that they are where they want to
- 18:35Speaker 4: be from a personnel standpoint long term. But they have
- 18:39Speaker 4: enough pieces, and they've got the system, and they've got
- 18:42Speaker 4: the coaching because I really like their offensive coaching staff
- 18:45Speaker 4: and their defensive coaching staff. They have the pieces, and
- 18:48Speaker 4: they have the guy quarterback. We've talked about it before.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Anytime you've got a guy like this, like Kamaru Taylor,
- 18:55Speaker 4: you're going to have a shot. There's a chance that
- 18:58Speaker 4: he can just go off and have a great game
- 19:00Speaker 4: and have you in the ballgame.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Against literally anybody.
- 19:04Speaker 4: That's the type of talent that he is, and State
- 19:06Speaker 4: has enough pieces around him to go make those plays.
- 19:10Speaker 4: So that's kind of what you're looking at here. I mean,
- 19:13Speaker 4: I don't want to put too much pressure on this
- 19:14Speaker 4: team this week, but you do have a chance here
- 19:17Speaker 4: to really ramp things up with this team. And I
- 19:21Speaker 4: promise you, if there are detractors right now and people
- 19:24Speaker 4: that aren't on board with Mississippi State, they will certainly
- 19:28Speaker 4: be on board after this weekend if they can find
- 19:30Speaker 4: a way.
- 19:31Speaker 1: There is no doubt. Robby, before we let you go,
- 19:32Speaker 1: tell everybody about State 1878. Of course, it's a great time.
- 19:36Speaker 1: You're not going to find a better time to get
- 19:37Speaker 1: involved with you guys.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, 100%. You want to come check us out.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Right now, we've got several different tiers all the way

- 19:50Speaker 4: We've got the Hardy concert coming up on Friday night
- 19:53Speaker 4: at Humphrey Coliseum, and we'll have full coverage of the
- 19:57Speaker 4: game on Saturday. Wednesday, we'll have our interlocked episode, our
- 20:01Speaker 4: in-season documentary that we're doing. You guys can come check
- 20:04Speaker 4: that out. Great stuff going over there. We've got podcasts.
- 20:07Speaker 4: We've got written content. We've got long-form video. Nobody's doing
- 20:12Speaker 4: anything like this or has done anything like this at
- 20:14Speaker 4: Mississippi State, so come check us out.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Robbie, appreciate you as always, brother. And, look, we'll do
- 20:18Speaker 1: it again very soon.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Yeah, Jay, appreciate you, man.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Thanks so much. Robbie Falk, State, 1878, in with you. And,
- 20:26Speaker 1: of course, we're going to get Judd Zaflisi in here
- 20:27Speaker 1: in just a bit. I want to remind you about,
- 20:29Speaker 1: of course, our friends at MyBookie. Hit that promo code.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Use the– or hit that code there. And on the
- 20:35Speaker 1: top of the screen, get in there and use the
- 20:38Speaker 1: promo code patio. And of course, at Jake Wim for
- 20:41Speaker 1: a sign up bonus as well. Let me put this
- 20:43Speaker 1: in here real quick before we get Joseph Lissy in here.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And we're going to get this set up and get
- 20:48Speaker 1: him in here as always. We appreciate him jumping in
- 20:52Speaker 1: here with us. So let's bring Joseph into the show
- 20:54Speaker 1: as he is with Sirius XM. Also go for the
- 20:57Speaker 1: two and one of the best covering college football. And
- 21:00Speaker 1: I mean that Joseph, welcome in.
- 21:01Speaker 4: How are you, brother?
- 21:02Speaker 2: Oh, Jake, how are you? I don't know what weekend
- 21:05Speaker 2: is better. I thought we had six top 25 matchups
- 21:09Speaker 2: this past Saturday, and then you look at the schedule
- 21:12Speaker 2: this weekend. I don't know. It's pretty. You can make
- 21:16Speaker 2: the argument week five is better maybe than week four.
- 21:20Speaker 1: No, you're right. I mean, it's some great matchups around
- 21:23Speaker 1: the country, and college football just continues to deliver. It's
- 21:26Speaker 1: interesting because college football, you've got two things going on
- 21:29Speaker 1: at once. You've got a great season going on, Then
- 21:32Speaker 1: you've got that crap going on in D.C., which, again,
- 21:35Speaker 1: I don't think any of that– you've got Cory Booker
- 21:38Speaker 1: out here, and you've got all these people– not to
- 21:40Speaker 1: pin it on him. All of them are making recessions
- 21:43Speaker 1: for this bill, which I don't think the bill will
- 21:45Speaker 1: ever fully pass. So it is a crazy time to
- 21:48Speaker 1: be alive. But, hey, let's jump right into it. Before
- 21:51Speaker 1: we get into the matchups this week, and we'll kind
- 21:52Speaker 1: of go backwards and forwards, John Mateer. I feel sorry
- 21:57Speaker 1: for John Mateer at this point.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean– I talked about it with Coach Bowden today,
- 22:03Speaker 2: and he just looks like a completely different quarterback. Forget
- 22:09Speaker 2: the mechanics. All we saw all offseason was when he
- 22:13Speaker 2: attended the Manning camp, how big he was, how focused
- 22:17Speaker 2: he was. He was due for a breakout year. Jake,
- 22:21Speaker 2: and all of a sudden he didn't step up and
- 22:24Speaker 2: you look at the press conferences too. And that's where
- 22:28Speaker 2: I have a problem. Uh, just thinking about where he
- 22:32Speaker 2: is right now as a quarterback and let me do.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Where I got my mic on.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Um, Where he is as a quarterback is completely, from
- 22:40Speaker 2: a confidence standpoint, night and day. I don't understand where
- 22:45Speaker 2: he lost his confidence. They have no rushing attack. Entering
- 22:49Speaker 2: that game last week, they were averaging 109 yards on
- 22:51Speaker 2: the ground. and they were going to have to run
- 22:54Speaker 2: the football to take the pressure off him. He has
- 22:57Speaker 2: a critical turnover on the goal line, and that's it now.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Now he's just like a washed-up quarterback. I hate to
- 23:05Speaker 2: say that this early in the season, but now in
- 23:08Speaker 2: back-to-back road games against Michigan and Georgia, obviously top 25 opponents,
- 23:15Speaker 2: he cannot step up, and this team as a whole
- 23:18Speaker 2: is searching for answers right now.
- 23:21Speaker 1: No, you're absolutely right. Let me ask you about another
- 23:25Speaker 1: team that's off this week, Ole Miss. I was not
- 23:29Speaker 1: shocked they lost the game. I knew we talked about
- 23:30Speaker 1: it last week. It was going to be kind of
- 23:32Speaker 1: a 50-50 game. But when you look at Ole Miss,
- 23:36Speaker 1: I was shocked that Florida run it down their throat
- 23:38Speaker 1: the way they did.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yes, and credit Florida. I was wrong on that game.
- 23:43Speaker 2: What I didn't like about how people just assume, and
- 23:48Speaker 2: they did come out flat. I'm not going to take
- 23:50Speaker 2: that away. But we've seen teams in similar spots come
- 23:55Speaker 2: and run the table. You can't say good teams like
- 23:58Speaker 2: Georgia and Ohio State and others would not be boat
- 24:03Speaker 2: raced in that type of situation. You know, Indiana, Michigan,
- 24:07Speaker 2: the last two years were undefeated in the regular season.
- 24:10Speaker 2: So those teams found ways to regroup week after week
- 24:14Speaker 2: after week. What I didn't expect was how bad their
- 24:19Speaker 2: offensive line was And forget the interior defensive line. But
- 24:23Speaker 2: they couldn't run the football consistently either. They did not
- 24:27Speaker 2: have positive plays on first and second down that allowed
- 24:31Speaker 2: Trinidad Jamles to open up the passing attack. Trinidad, he
- 24:34Speaker 2: got hit that one time. He came out of the matchup.
- 24:38Speaker 2: And from that point on, he failed to run the
- 24:40Speaker 2: rest of the day. I don't know if he hurt
- 24:42Speaker 2: his shoulder. He was out for a period of time.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Maybe he was a little overly cautious. But credit the
- 24:48Speaker 2: interior line for Florida. for dominating that game. I will
- 24:52Speaker 2: say this, this talk about now Florida elevating to the
- 24:57Speaker 2: best team in the SEC, maybe, fine. I do not
- 25:02Speaker 2: put them right here, right now on Georgia's level. I'm sorry.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Florida's a great story. They're 4-0. They beat up on
- 25:10Speaker 2: a team that had a 6.5 win total in Auburn.
- 25:13Speaker 2: They still gave up 39 points. One touchdown was a
- 25:17Speaker 2: Hail Mary. Fine. Take that away. You still gave up
- 25:20Speaker 2: 32 points to Auburn, one of their highest outputs this year. So, again,
- 25:26Speaker 2: this Georgia team is peaking right now. We'll see how
- 25:29Speaker 2: they handle Vanderbilt. Great story in Gainesville. They might be
- 25:33Speaker 2: an at-large team by the end of the regular season.
- 25:36Speaker 2: But through four weeks, I'm not anointing this team the
- 25:41Speaker 2: best team in college football. I just want to say that.
- 25:44Speaker 2: It's a great story, and John Summerall has done a
- 25:47Speaker 2: great job. What they've done over four weeks isn't more impressive,
- 25:52Speaker 2: in my opinion, than what Georgia's done in their body
- 25:55Speaker 2: of work over the last eight or ten seasons.
- 25:59Speaker 1: No, I totally agree with you. And also, before we
- 26:01Speaker 1: get into some games, too, you know, Texas just looks
- 26:05Speaker 1: lethargic in a lot of ways. I mean, Arch Manning,
- 26:09Speaker 1: you know, look, I want to believe in the last name.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I mean, he does some good things, but they tried
- 26:15Speaker 1: to give Tennessee that football game, and Tennessee wouldn't take it.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I don't understand what it is. Teams that go on
- 26:21Speaker 2: the road, you have a double-digit lead, and you are
- 26:24Speaker 2: completely abusing Faison Brandon. He had 34 yards through three quarters.
- 26:31Speaker 2: He was like 8 of 11 for 34 yards. Why
- 26:34Speaker 2: did Will Muschamp, in the final two or three minutes,
- 26:38Speaker 2: decide to play Previn and allow him to get into
- 26:41Speaker 2: a rhythm? You're up 10. Even if you get burned
- 26:46Speaker 2: by a touchdown by, you know, giving one free safety
- 26:50Speaker 2: or going empty in the defensive secondary and blitzing the edge,
- 26:55Speaker 2: why are you worried about giving up a touchdown when
- 26:58Speaker 2: you're up 10 when you allowed him to just go
- 27:01Speaker 2: right down the field in a minute? And he scores it,
- 27:04Speaker 2: and now you don't get the onside kick. Look, I
- 27:08Speaker 2: think it's a complete, these teams that are up, are
- 27:12Speaker 2: just happy to be up. There is no killer instinct
- 27:15Speaker 2: in saying, hey, we're up 10, let's be up 17.
- 27:19Speaker 2: In college football, you see these teams go up and
- 27:22Speaker 2: down the field in 10 or 15 seconds with the
- 27:26Speaker 2: rules and everything. Why are we playing prevent? Again, I
- 27:31Speaker 2: think the front seven for three and a half quarters
- 27:33Speaker 2: played lights out. The final three minutes I thought was
- 27:36Speaker 2: absolutely atrocious. I thought they gave up. I don't know
- 27:40Speaker 2: if Texas is a complete team, how the AP and
- 27:43Speaker 2: everybody's putting them one overall because they beat Ohio State. Yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 2: it's a great home victory, but we know that their
- 27:50Speaker 2: Achilles heel is that they couldn't win on the road
- 27:53Speaker 2: last year, and they almost gave this game away to
- 27:57Speaker 2: a freshman quarterback making his first career SEC start. It
- 28:00Speaker 2: was pathetic in the second half.
- 28:02Speaker 1: No, it was. It was. All right, we've got a
- 28:04Speaker 1: good one in Starkville.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Top 25 matchups, Mississippi State and Alabama. Alabama is starting
- 28:11Speaker 1: to look the part. They took, you know, dismantled South Carolina.
- 28:14Speaker 1: They've got their own problems. Mississippi State, kind of an
- 28:17Speaker 1: inverse of what they did against South Carolina. They went
- 28:19Speaker 1: up this week, gave up the lead, come back and
- 28:22Speaker 1: win it. You know, Kalen DeBoer has not been a
- 28:25Speaker 1: great road head coach. But having said that, they're going
- 28:29Speaker 1: to test Mississippi State like anybody has this year. with
- 28:34Speaker 1: the way Keelan Russell can make you play 11-11. Kamario
- 28:37Speaker 1: Taylor makes you play 11-11. It should be a great matchup.
- 28:40Speaker 1: By the way, Mississippi State's 4-0 against the spread this year.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they're doing great. And again, I was wrong on
- 28:45Speaker 2: that game with Missouri. I mean, they pulled it out
- 28:48Speaker 2: and lose it by a half. The fans at Starkville
- 28:51Speaker 2: hate me anyway, but they are 4-0. And let me
- 28:54Speaker 2: tell you, he's playing lights out. He throws for 360.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Keelan Russell throws for 365 against South Carolina. I said
- 29:03Speaker 2: to Coach Bowden, would you be shocked if the Sunderer
- 29:05Speaker 2: came in? If it's a 21-17 game, Jake, are we
- 29:09Speaker 2: going to be shocked when you see this total come
- 29:12Speaker 2: out on the books Sunday afternoon? But here's the thing.
- 29:16Speaker 2: They've lost 16 straight to Alabama, right, as you know.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Getting over that, it's not going to be, are they
- 29:23Speaker 2: going to be in the game? It's going to be,
- 29:25Speaker 2: can they close the game out? We've seen these games
- 29:29Speaker 2: where in college football, And Indiana did it. I think
- 29:33Speaker 2: I'm trying to think against Michigan. Indiana, two years ago,
- 29:38Speaker 2: had lost to Michigan. I think it was 24 straight
- 29:42Speaker 2: times or 20. And they beat Michigan, but didn't cover
- 29:45Speaker 2: the spread. They had snapped a losing streak that was unprecedented.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Miss State has the opportunity to do that. They just
- 29:55Speaker 2: have to, when they get that chance in the fourth quarter,
- 29:58Speaker 2: can they close it out? Is there going to be
- 30:00Speaker 2: a critical offsides penalty? Is there going to be a
- 30:04Speaker 2: false start? They have to stay within... themselves to pull
- 30:09Speaker 2: this game out. They're playing as good as anybody in
- 30:11Speaker 2: the conference right now. They have a quarterback role in sevens.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I would, I am always inclined to take the home
- 30:18Speaker 2: team with the points in a riot, like in an
- 30:21Speaker 2: sec conference game, especially when you have two quarterbacks that
- 30:25Speaker 2: could chuck it. And I've said this, if, if Alabama
- 30:29Speaker 2: gave up three 77 to Ashton Daniels in Florida state,
- 30:33Speaker 2: Camario could go for 500 in this game. I mean,
- 30:37Speaker 2: let's just be honest. They have speed. I am concerned
- 30:41Speaker 2: about the front seven and run support. They haven't really
- 30:44Speaker 2: been tested. Missouri couldn't get going in the second half.
- 30:47Speaker 2: They've made adjustments. Zach Garnett's done a great job. I
- 30:51Speaker 2: think they're going to be in this game. Again, whether
- 30:53Speaker 2: they pull it out or not remains to be seen.
- 30:56Speaker 2: When you lose 16 straight, you just can't let stupid
- 31:00Speaker 2: penalties or stupid mistakes down the stretch burn you. But
- 31:04Speaker 2: I think they have a very good shot. And Camario's
- 31:06Speaker 2: the guy that he doesn't care. He'll pull it out
- 31:09Speaker 2: one way or the other. So, cardiac kids, I'm pulling
- 31:12Speaker 2: for them this weekend.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Game day's headed to Iowa, Ohio State, Iowa. This is
- 31:18Speaker 1: a 14-point deficit. Ohio State minus 14, totals at 45.
- 31:22Speaker 1: You know, Iowa's so interesting. They have been right here.
- 31:26Speaker 1: It's like every year. It's rinse and repeat. They play
- 31:28Speaker 1: some of the best defense in college football. they don't
- 31:30Speaker 1: necessarily have the recruiting profile of an Ohio state or
- 31:33Speaker 1: Georgia or even Oregon or Alabama for that matter. Can
- 31:38Speaker 1: they stay in this game? I mean, I mean, we
- 31:40Speaker 1: know defensively they're good. It's just for whatever reason, Kirk
- 31:44Speaker 1: Ferentz has never been able to develop an offense. I,
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know, he's gone through some offensive coordinators and I
- 31:50Speaker 1: lend it back to Jackie Sherrill when he was at
- 31:51Speaker 1: Mississippi state would change offensive coordinators, but the offense always
- 31:55Speaker 1: looked the same. So you always were, you know, thought, Well,
- 31:58Speaker 1: this is actually Cheryl's philosophy, right? So is it Kirk
- 32:02Speaker 1: Ferentz's style? Can this style, can they be in the
- 32:06Speaker 1: fourth quarter of the Ohio State Saturday?
- 32:08Speaker 2: Yes, they can. But in order to do that, they
- 32:13Speaker 2: need a perfect ride. And I'll go back to entering
- 32:17Speaker 2: that game last week, right? Michigan was averaging like 180
- 32:21Speaker 2: passing yards per game. They had anemic offense, you know.
- 32:25Speaker 2: It was run heavy. And you look at the stats
- 32:27Speaker 2: for Iowa, 268 on the ground, 206 through the air.
- 32:31Speaker 2: They showed offensive balance with Hank Brown, right? Well, here's
- 32:36Speaker 2: the thing. If Bryce Underwood could throw for 276, Jake,
- 32:44Speaker 2: Julian Sayen and that offense are averaging 365 a game.
- 32:49Speaker 2: You're coming off Jeremiah Smith's 200-yard performance against Illinois. they've
- 32:55Speaker 2: only given up three passing touchdowns and have held opposing
- 32:58Speaker 2: quarterbacks only to 52% completion percentage. And statistically, they're only
- 33:05Speaker 2: giving up $ 1. 52 through the air. But they haven't faced
- 33:08Speaker 2: speed like this. Like Michigan ripped them through the air
- 33:13Speaker 2: for 276. That's like $ 5. 50 for saying. They're going to,
- 33:19Speaker 2: in order to cover this line, and I haven't made
- 33:21Speaker 2: a pick on this game yet, If you're back in Iowa,
- 33:24Speaker 2: you need to run the football, shorten the game, score first.
- 33:28Speaker 2: And they did that, I believe, two years ago in
- 33:31Speaker 2: Columbus and still lost, like, what, 31-2? They got blown out, right?
- 33:36Speaker 2: It was a much different team. But this team, I
- 33:39Speaker 2: said this to Coach Bowden today, I said, they get
- 33:42Speaker 2: this win. As long as they only have two losses,
- 33:45Speaker 2: they're in the playoffs, right? Like, whether they win the
- 33:48Speaker 2: Big Ten or not, you have back-to-back wins over Michigan
- 33:51Speaker 2: and Ohio State. I mean, they're almost granted an at-large bid, right?
- 33:56Speaker 2: I'm just saying. You have to think so. Because they
- 33:59Speaker 2: lost four games last year by an average margin of
- 34:02Speaker 2: defeat of 3.7 points per game. I'm just saying, like,
- 34:06Speaker 2: you know, if we're talking Oregon, Iowa, right? Oregon, I
- 34:14Speaker 2: wouldn't lose to Oak State by nine or eight.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:18Speaker 2: As a 23-and-a-half-point favorite.
- 34:21Speaker 4: On the run.
- 34:21Speaker 2: I'm just saying, if it goes the way we think
- 34:24Speaker 2: it's going to go, if we have a 10-and-2 at-large Oregon,
- 34:27Speaker 2: 10-or-2 at-large Iowa, in my opinion, I'd give the edge
- 34:31Speaker 2: to Iowa. What about you?
- 34:33Speaker 1: No, I'm with you. I mean, look, if they only
- 34:35Speaker 1: have two losses and one of them is Ohio State
- 34:37Speaker 1: and then pick another team.
- 34:39Speaker 2: No, no, I'm saying if they beat Ohio State.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely.
- 34:42Speaker 2: And then have two losses to, let's say, two teams
- 34:46Speaker 2: down the road.
- 34:47Speaker 1: My apologies. Yes. If they beat Ohio State after a
- 34:51Speaker 1: Michigan win, if they roll out 10 wins, I don't
- 34:54Speaker 1: care if they have two losses, two, pick two teams,
- 34:57Speaker 1: they're in the playoff. I agree.
- 34:59Speaker 4: I agree.
- 34:59Speaker 2: That's why this game is so critical because they have
- 35:04Speaker 2: house money now. Nobody expected them to beat Michigan. They
- 35:08Speaker 2: get the Hail Mary or they get the last play
- 35:10Speaker 2: with 20 seconds left. Now they're double-digit underdogs. Somehow, someway,
- 35:14Speaker 2: they pull this game out in Kinnick. They already have
- 35:17Speaker 2: that play. Hey, let's just run the table. We have
- 35:20Speaker 2: two losses to give up. Just saying. And we're still
- 35:23Speaker 2: an at-large team that I think gets the benefit of
- 35:26Speaker 2: the doubt head-to-head with Oregon. I really do. We'll see.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Speaking of house money, Florida's got a little bit of it.
- 35:34Speaker 1: But they're traveling to Missouri. And, you know, this has
- 35:37Speaker 1: been an interesting matchup between these two. Missouri is a
- 35:39Speaker 1: five-and-a-half point dog at home. That total is 57. And,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know, Florida now, they kind of flipped the script
- 35:46Speaker 1: to where Ole Miss was last week.
- 35:47Speaker 2: They got a big win.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Can Missouri be in this game? Can Missouri win this
- 35:51Speaker 1: game at home?
- 35:52Speaker 2: They can. It's going to come down to Austin Simmons
- 35:55Speaker 2: and that offense. Again, you know, Drinkwich is a much
- 35:59Speaker 2: better home coach than he is a road coach. He's
- 36:01Speaker 2: now five, I think five and seven in straight up
- 36:04Speaker 2: road environments dating back the past couple of years. So
- 36:07Speaker 2: it hasn't done all that great on the road. They're
- 36:09Speaker 2: a much better battle-tested team in Columbia. Again, I think
- 36:14Speaker 2: they can win. I personally, going against Florida back-to-back weeks
- 36:19Speaker 2: and being wrong, I would say, you know what? I'm
- 36:21Speaker 2: going to take a wait-and-see approach. If I'm going to
- 36:24Speaker 2: bet that game, let's say, I would do it in
- 36:26Speaker 2: an in-game perspective where, hey, if I think Missouri could
- 36:30Speaker 2: step up, I would much rather see how the first
- 36:32Speaker 2: or second quarter go, maybe at halftime buy back in,
- 36:36Speaker 2: or if Florida jumps up early, you know, taking double
- 36:39Speaker 2: digits if I get it, 9.5, 10. But, yeah, they
- 36:42Speaker 2: can win that game. They won three of the last
- 36:44Speaker 2: four against the Gators in this spot, you know, in Columbia.
- 36:48Speaker 2: So they can win this game. It's going to come
- 36:50Speaker 2: down to does Aaron Filo implode? And to this point,
- 36:55Speaker 2: he hasn't because the rushing attack's been so well. If
- 36:59Speaker 2: they can't run it, that's going to be a cause
- 37:01Speaker 2: of concern. But all things point to, you know, them
- 37:05Speaker 2: being able to continue this success that they've had.
- 37:09Speaker 1: All right, Miami plays Clemson. I don't think anybody's picking Clemson,
- 37:12Speaker 1: but I want to share something with you. You probably
- 37:13Speaker 1: saw it today. I want to share it with our audience.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Look over here real quick. Let me make sure this
- 37:20Speaker 1: pulls up on the screen.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw it.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Shannon Dawson, the offensive coordinator of Miami, came out
- 37:24Speaker 1: of nowhere and took a shot at the SEC. Quote,
- 37:26Speaker 1: everything's SEC, SEC. They have all their teams in the
- 37:29Speaker 1: top 25. Good for you. At the end of the year,
- 37:31Speaker 1: half of them will be in the top 30. We
- 37:33Speaker 1: can't sit here and say, hey, we play X number
- 37:34Speaker 1: of top 25 teams. We'll count– we'll count those chips
- 37:38Speaker 1: at the end of the year. Right. What's going on?
- 37:42Speaker 1: I mean, Shannon Dawson doesn't have to say this. Why
- 37:46Speaker 1: did he say this? I mean, Miami's going to– Miami's good.
- 37:49Speaker 1: They're real good.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:51Speaker 2: I think it's– I think part of it was, hey,
- 37:53Speaker 2: Missouri's still ranked, right?
- 37:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 2: You didn't see mistake come in there. You didn't see
- 37:58Speaker 2: some of the other teams. And even though we're still
- 38:01Speaker 2: talking SEC– I think that people agree that sometimes the
- 38:06Speaker 2: AP poll is a joke, right?
- 38:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Especially, you know, Missouri for the past, what, 10, five
- 38:12Speaker 2: years is always in the top 25. You know, for years,
- 38:15Speaker 2: Auburn was in the top 10 or top 15, you know,
- 38:19Speaker 2: when they had Gus Malzahn just because it was Auburn
- 38:22Speaker 2: all those years. And I think that's the bias that
- 38:26Speaker 2: we see in the AP that, you know, he's taking
- 38:29Speaker 2: a shot. Now there's a team that still has to
- 38:31Speaker 2: answer the bell and, Against Clemson, now, yes, I don't
- 38:35Speaker 2: think Clemson has a shot to win because of how
- 38:38Speaker 2: inexperienced Tate Reynolds is, but they're running the football a
- 38:42Speaker 2: lot better than they have been. And we talk about
- 38:46Speaker 2: this home dominance for Clemson. I talked about it in
- 38:49Speaker 2: the offseason while I was down on the Tigers. You know,
- 38:52Speaker 2: they had only lost two home games from 14 to 22.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Dating back to last year, they had lost six home games.
- 39:03Speaker 2: I mean, the lusters worn off of Death Valley. They
- 39:07Speaker 2: lost six conference games from 14 to 22, almost a nine,
- 39:12Speaker 2: 10-year span. They lost nine conference games. So this team
- 39:16Speaker 2: isn't just, hey, Clemson, we walk out onto the field
- 39:19Speaker 2: and we take care of business, right, Jake? This team
- 39:22Speaker 2: now has major question marks. And I think that when's
- 39:28Speaker 2: the last time Dabo's been a dogfighter of 16 and
- 39:30Speaker 2: a half points in his own building, let alone just
- 39:34Speaker 2: double digits? You have to go back to the days
- 39:37Speaker 2: when he took over for Terry's brother, Tommy Bowne. I mean,
- 39:40Speaker 2: I would have to really go back, and I want
- 39:43Speaker 2: to research it. I'd do that tonight with all the breakdowns,
- 39:46Speaker 2: but you have to go back a really long time
- 39:49Speaker 2: to find Clemson as basically a three-touchdown underdog or two
- 39:53Speaker 2: touchdowns and a field goal. I'm just saying if there's
- 39:56Speaker 2: pride on the line and you're a Clemson Tiger backer,
- 39:59Speaker 2: you don't get blown out in this game somehow, some way.
- 40:03Speaker 2: But this is it. Styles make fights. Curious to see
- 40:06Speaker 2: how this game plays out.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Speaking of styles and fights, nationally it won't get a
- 40:10Speaker 1: lot of recognition, and the SEC it will a little
- 40:12Speaker 1: bit because Kentucky's at South Carolina. Shane Beamer's reeling. They've
- 40:16Speaker 1: suspended Dylan Stewart. you know, indefinitely because of the way he,
- 40:21Speaker 1: you know, some of the things he was doing on
- 40:22Speaker 1: the field. Kentucky can really make it tough if they
- 40:25Speaker 1: get a win against South Carolina. Well, that's going to
- 40:27Speaker 1: put Beamer in a bad spot this week.
- 40:29Speaker 3: It is.
- 40:29Speaker 2: And I guess, you know, I talked about goalish rebounding
- 40:34Speaker 2: from the Florida loss. How does this team look when
- 40:37Speaker 2: they played Vanderbilt? Doesn't matter. They were able to grind
- 40:40Speaker 2: out a six-point win. They're quietly three and one. It's
- 40:44Speaker 2: similar now to Shane Beamer. You made a decision. You
- 40:47Speaker 2: got abused on primetime in Tuscaloosa, right? You come back home.
- 40:52Speaker 2: You play a Kentucky team where they've won four straight
- 40:56Speaker 2: against the Wildcats. They have dominated this team over the
- 40:59Speaker 2: past couple of years. They've won the last two by
- 41:02Speaker 2: an average margin of victory of 23.5 points per game.
- 41:06Speaker 2: What do you have out of this team? Lenora Sellers
- 41:08Speaker 2: was supposed to be everything that Kamario Taylor was and is.
- 41:12Speaker 2: He's not. Where is this talent at? And think about it.
- 41:17Speaker 2: We were making the argument potentially two years ago when
- 41:21Speaker 2: they beat Clemson when they were, what, 10-4 that year?
- 41:24Speaker 2: That they should have been in the playoff because they
- 41:27Speaker 2: were one of the hottest teams in the country at
- 41:29Speaker 2: the end of the regular season. And where are they now?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Look at how far they've dropped off. You have a
- 41:36Speaker 2: coach in Will Stein that, let's be honest, Kenny Mincy
- 41:39Speaker 2: and all the talent that they have isn't what the
- 41:42Speaker 2: talent that South Carolina possesses. Dylan Stewart, you have Nick Carver,
- 41:48Speaker 2: Lenora Sellers. We're paying these guys, and you're not getting
- 41:53Speaker 2: anything from the return. And it just goes to show
- 41:58Speaker 2: what good coaching is. Will Stein came in with a plan.
- 42:01Speaker 2: He's executed that plan. He's found players that follow the
- 42:05Speaker 2: plan and are plug-and-play type of guys. He's made an
- 42:08Speaker 2: assessment on his quarterback, and he's getting the most out
- 42:11Speaker 2: of this team right now. They dominated South Alabama on
- 42:15Speaker 2: parents weekend, 45 to 24. I mean, they're catching three
- 42:20Speaker 2: and a half points. I can't tell you who I'm
- 42:23Speaker 2: going to pick yet, but if they lose this game,
- 42:26Speaker 2: South Carolina, I'm just going to say Beamer could be
- 42:30Speaker 2: fired in season, mid season. And then they they're looking
- 42:35Speaker 2: for a big name head coach. And who do you get?
- 42:38Speaker 2: Who do you get? That's the question. You went through Spurrier, Holtz.
- 42:44Speaker 2: I'm just saying, you went through the heyday. I was
- 42:48Speaker 2: there through Andrew Pinnock and Ryan Brewer days. Remember them? Absolutely.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Phil Petty and that group. They had some success with
- 43:01Speaker 2: Lou Holtz and obviously Spurrier and then the Stephen Garcia years,
- 43:05Speaker 2: but who do you get? Like, that's the thing. Like
- 43:09Speaker 2: it's another year removed. Oklahoma might be out of a coach.
- 43:12Speaker 2: South Carolina might be out of a coach. Maryland, but
- 43:15Speaker 2: if we're talking Oklahoma and South Carolina, they trump Maryland.
- 43:18Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, who are we going to get?
- 43:22Speaker 2: South Carolina is that enigma. It's got great resources. You
- 43:27Speaker 2: get the East Coast appeal from the kids in the tri-state.
- 43:30Speaker 2: They recruit a lot in the tri-state. All the five
- 43:34Speaker 2: stars from Jersey and New York can go to South
- 43:37Speaker 2: Carolina in that area. You're fighting with Bill Belichick, depending upon...
- 43:41Speaker 2: how his season goes dab. I mean, you need a
- 43:44Speaker 2: big time head coach. I don't know who you're going
- 43:47Speaker 2: to get.
- 43:48Speaker 1: No, I agree with you. I agree with you. It's,
- 43:49Speaker 1: it's fascinating. Let's get a couple more in here and
- 43:51Speaker 1: we'll get you on your way. Speaking of coaches, Oregon,
- 43:55Speaker 1: Dante Moore gets knocked out of the ball game.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 1: It was a, it was a bad hit. They suspended
- 44:00Speaker 1: the young man from SC, but then Dylan Raiola, who
- 44:04Speaker 1: has been really kind of clowned up to this point
- 44:06Speaker 1: as a patch. Patrick Mahomes want to be with a
- 44:08Speaker 1: hair and his movement reminds me a lot of rest
- 44:10Speaker 1: in peace, Kobe and the way he mimicked Michael. But
- 44:14Speaker 1: the thing is, is Kobe actually played like Michael and
- 44:17Speaker 1: was like Michael and had talent.
- 44:19Speaker 2: I'm not taking away from, I'm not taking it. The
- 44:21Speaker 2: kid pulled out the victory on the road, but, but, but,
- 44:24Speaker 2: but yes, I know exactly what you're saying. Like, you know,
- 44:29Speaker 2: let's call it what it is. It's like, I feel
- 44:31Speaker 2: like Dylan Rayola was more concerned about mimicking Pat Mahomes
- 44:36Speaker 2: as opposed to leading the team to wins to get
- 44:39Speaker 2: to a college football playoff. It's crazy. He's going to
- 44:43Speaker 2: be the guy for how many weeks? Two weeks? Three weeks?
- 44:47Speaker 1: And showed to be the guy. So Oregon, at least today,
- 44:50Speaker 1: is back. Lincoln Riley, does this put him in a
- 44:53Speaker 1: bad way?
- 44:54Speaker 2: Yes, and I backed them last week. I had the good,
- 44:57Speaker 2: the bad, and the ugly. My best bet for the
- 44:59Speaker 2: weekend was Wisconsin, and then you have two eggs in
- 45:03Speaker 2: Florida and USC. But they were a team that I
- 45:07Speaker 2: have said, for $ 11 million, he didn't win a Pac-12
- 45:12Speaker 2: championship when they got there. He had the number one
- 45:15Speaker 2: pick in the draft in Caleb Williams and couldn't overachieve.
- 45:19Speaker 2: He underachieved. He gets outcoached in multiple big games. Again,
- 45:25Speaker 2: we keep talking about why Lincoln Riley's a bad coach.
- 45:28Speaker 2: It's not because he can't get talent. It's because he
- 45:32Speaker 2: cannot execute a game plan that doesn't work from the
- 45:36Speaker 2: beginning of a game to the end, meaning he's like
- 45:40Speaker 2: the Mike McDaniel of college football. When his teams are
- 45:43Speaker 2: running and converting and they're up 21, he's a great coach.
- 45:48Speaker 2: When they're down and the game plan isn't working from
- 45:51Speaker 2: the get-go or the defenses have adjusted, he doesn't have
- 45:56Speaker 2: a good offensive or defensive philosophy to see what the
- 46:01Speaker 2: team is doing and then adjusting to that at halftime.
- 46:04Speaker 2: He is a terrible... in-game and halftime coach, and that's
- 46:08Speaker 2: why he's just average, in my opinion. His success came
- 46:12Speaker 2: because that train was in motion in Oklahoma, and I'm
- 46:15Speaker 2: not taking away from his ability to coach up Heisman
- 46:18Speaker 2: Trophy winners and quarterback, but that is one aspect of
- 46:21Speaker 2: being a good head coach. The other aspect is recognizing
- 46:25Speaker 2: the game plan isn't working, and we need to adjust in-game,
- 46:29Speaker 2: and we need to make adjustments to get our team
- 46:31Speaker 2: back into the ballgame, and he has failed repeatedly in
- 46:36Speaker 2: And it's not worth the $ 12 million. It really isn't
- 46:39Speaker 2: worth the $ 12 million. He hung his hat on Alex Grinch.
- 46:43Speaker 2: He hung his hat now on an agent, Gary Patterson.
- 46:46Speaker 2: And it's just not working. And unfortunately, I'm sorry. There's
- 46:51Speaker 2: talk now I'm reading about Chesney. They're trying to lure
- 46:55Speaker 2: Chesney from UCLA to USC. This is crazy where we
- 47:00Speaker 2: are in college football. It really is.
- 47:03Speaker 4: It is.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Let's finish it up with Texas A & M and
- 47:04Speaker 1: any other thoughts you may have for this week. Texas
- 47:07Speaker 1: A & M, much like Oklahoma, it's just not there.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Marcel Reed, I'm pulling for him, but he's just not
- 47:13Speaker 1: having the year that everybody thought. And this, again, was
- 47:15Speaker 1: a playoff team last year. They look on the outside
- 47:18Speaker 1: looking in.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and here's like this is the problem with the
- 47:23Speaker 2: landscape in college football now because they have two losses.
- 47:27Speaker 2: I'm sure this team at the end of the regular
- 47:29Speaker 2: season last year said, We have 2026 circle. We got
- 47:33Speaker 2: to get back to the college football playoff. Our thoughts
- 47:36Speaker 2: are to win the SEC. Remember, he called out Arch
- 47:39Speaker 2: Manning in the preseason before even playing a game. As
- 47:42Speaker 2: stupid as you could be, you know, if I'm Mike Elko,
- 47:45Speaker 2: I'm getting ahead of that before that even comes out.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Why give an arch rival, especially one that potentially could
- 47:52Speaker 2: derail you from a college football playoff, why you're giving
- 47:55Speaker 2: them bulletin board material 13, 14 weeks in advance is
- 47:59Speaker 2: beyond me. That aside, does this team crumble? And that's
- 48:03Speaker 2: what I'm worried about. They have a rivalry game. They've
- 48:06Speaker 2: won four straight against Arkansas. But as you know, this
- 48:10Speaker 2: goes back to the days of the Southwest Conference. No
- 48:12Speaker 2: matter how good or bad Arkansas is, they're going to
- 48:16Speaker 2: come to cover this game. And they're double-digit favorites at
- 48:20Speaker 2: home expected to win. But my worry is, like, I
- 48:25Speaker 2: can't back a favorite– And I know Elko might be involved,
- 48:30Speaker 2: but the kids might be checked out. Like, hey, and
- 48:34Speaker 2: this is where we're at in college football now. Ball
- 48:37Speaker 2: games aren't good enough. They don't even want to play
- 48:40Speaker 2: in ball games. If we don't make the college football playoff,
- 48:44Speaker 2: we're done. They have no semblance of an offensive philosophy
- 48:49Speaker 2: right now. No identity. Marcel Reed, he runs one week.
- 48:54Speaker 2: He can't run the next against LSU. They put up
- 48:57Speaker 2: six points, get outscored now in back-to-back weeks by a
- 49:01Speaker 2: total of 39 points to LSU and Kentucky, and you're
- 49:06Speaker 2: laying two touchdowns? to a dead football team, but they're
- 49:09Speaker 2: in a rebuild in Ryan Silverfield in Arkansas. I'm leaning
- 49:13Speaker 2: to the point. I know it's crazy, and I know
- 49:17Speaker 2: it's Kyle Field, and I know it's College Stadium. But,
- 49:21Speaker 2: I mean, the only way Texas A & M can
- 49:24Speaker 2: make a run is if they rebound from this point
- 49:27Speaker 2: and win all the rest of their games, including Texas.
- 49:31Speaker 2: That's the only way they could be thought of to
- 49:33Speaker 2: be a college football playoff contender. And when we talk
- 49:37Speaker 2: about these games... Think about Notre Dame last year. They
- 49:40Speaker 2: lost two games by four points. You can't lose two
- 49:44Speaker 2: games by 29 points to LSU and 10 points to
- 49:49Speaker 2: an unranked Kentucky team. That's a double-digit favor. You can't
- 49:53Speaker 2: do that. These teams need to understand. Forget coaches talking
- 49:57Speaker 2: about their point spread. But they have to be cognizant
- 50:00Speaker 2: of what people are aware of when we break these
- 50:04Speaker 2: teams down and say the committee says, hey, you laid
- 50:08Speaker 2: 23 and a half. They're not going to say that.
- 50:10Speaker 2: But when we put the body of work and resumes up, well,
- 50:14Speaker 2: we had one team in Iowa that lost two games
- 50:17Speaker 2: by five points or 10 points total. And we have
- 50:21Speaker 2: two other teams from the SEC that got blown out
- 50:24Speaker 2: and lost by a total of 42 points, one to
- 50:26Speaker 2: an unranked team and the other one to a team
- 50:29Speaker 2: that they were double-digit favorite or whatever. That does not
- 50:33Speaker 2: show well. So I'm worried about these kids just completely folding,
- 50:38Speaker 2: and that's it. You can't back these teams anymore. It's
- 50:41Speaker 2: like a no bet the rest of the way.
- 50:43Speaker 1: No, I agree with you 100%, 100%. Joseph, I know
- 50:46Speaker 1: you've got a big week. You guys will be all
- 50:48Speaker 1: over to tell everybody where to come find you. We
- 50:49Speaker 1: want to come see you this week.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'll be on Crossing Lines on Wednesday with
- 50:53Speaker 2: Donnie Seymour and Jeff Nadeau. Friday night, well, tomorrow night,
- 50:59Speaker 2: with Coach Bowden, the Bowden Ball, the Winning Edge. Tuesday,
- 51:03Speaker 2: FanStream Sports Network, 7 p.m. And then Friday night, we
- 51:07Speaker 2: give our pick segment with all the top 25 games,
- 51:10Speaker 2: Bowden Ball, the Winning Edge. And then Saturday morning, 10.30,
- 51:14Speaker 2: we break it down fastest hour and a half in
- 51:16Speaker 2: college football, the Mono versus the Encyclopedia. I got the
- 51:20Speaker 2: model this week. I picked Wisconsin over Penn State. I
- 51:25Speaker 2: was a little nervous down 17-0, but that Colton Joseph
- 51:29Speaker 2: was slinging sevens in the fourth quarter. Very good.
- 51:33Speaker 1: Brother, we'll do it again next week. Have a great week.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Thank you as always.
- 51:35Speaker 2: Anytime, Jake. Love the show.
