SPEAKER_00: Day seven, Nehemiah chapter two, verses one through two.
• 0:07
SPEAKER_00: There are moments when what we've worked hard to keep hidden suddenly becomes visible.
• 0:14
SPEAKER_00: For months, Nehemiah carried the burden of Jerusalem's brokenness in his heart.
• 0:19
SPEAKER_00: Since hearing of Jerusalem's ruin, he had grieved, fasted, and prayed while continuing to serve faithfully in the king's court.
• 0:29
  SPEAKER_00: Outwardly, little appeared differently.
• 0:32
  SPEAKER_00: Inwardly, everything had changed.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_00: Then comes this simple but significant moment.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_00: I had not been sad in his presence before, so the king asked me, Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill?
• 0:48
SPEAKER_00: This can be nothing but sadness of heart.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_00: It's easy to overlook what a vulnerable moment this was.
• 0:56
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah wasn't presenting a plan, making a request, or rallying support.
• 1:01
  SPEAKER_00: He was simply exposed.
• 1:04
SPEAKER_00: The burden he had been carrying could no longer be concealed.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_00: In the ancient world, appearing sad before a king could be dangerous.
• 1:13
SPEAKER_00: Kings valued stability and loyalty, and a servant's sorrow could easily be misunderstood.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah had every reason to keep his emotions under control.
• 1:25
SPEAKER_00: In fact, the text tells us he was very much afraid.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_00: Yet before God opened a door for action, he first allowed Nehemiah's burden to become visible.
• 1:37
SPEAKER_00: Many of us are comfortable once there is a plan.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_00: We like clarity, direction, and momentum.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_00: What often feels harder is the season before any of that exists.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_00: The season where God has stirred something in our hearts, but the path forward is still unclear, where prayer seems more necessary than productivity.
• 1:59
SPEAKER_00: As a church, we may be standing in a similar place.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_00: Over the past months, much has been shared about where God may be leading us.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_00: The temptation will be to immediately move toward strategy, action, and results.
• 2:14
SPEAKER_00: But Nehemiah reminds us that in God's work often begins somewhere far less dramatic.
• 2:21
SPEAKER_00: It begins with allowing our hearts to be affected by what affects God's heart.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah's sadness was not weakness.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_00: It was evidence that he had spent time in God's presence carrying a burden he could not resolve on his own.
• 2:37
  SPEAKER_00: His grief revealed dependence.
• 2:41
  SPEAKER_00: His concern revealed love.
• 2:44
SPEAKER_00: His visible sorrow became part of how God prepared him for the next chapter.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 21 1 offers a beautiful reminder of what is happening here.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_00: It says The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_00: He turns it wherever he will.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah stood before the most powerful ruler he knew.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_00: Yet the outcome of that conversation did not ultimately rest on Nehemiah's ability to control it.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_00: God was already at work in places Nehemiah could not see.
• 3:19
SPEAKER_00: Even the king's heart was under God's sovereign care.
• 3:23
SPEAKER_00: There is comfort in that truth.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: We often carry concerns, hopes, and burdens while wondering how circumstances, leaders, opportunities, or other people might respond.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_00: We feel responsible to manage outcomes.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_00: We rehearse conversations in our mind.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_00: We imagine best case and worst case scenarios.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah's story gently redirects our attention.
• 3:51
SPEAKER_00: Before God asks us to act, he often invites us to trust.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_00: Before he reveals the next step, he teaches us dependence.
• 4:01
SPEAKER_00: Before he changes circumstances, he forms our hearts.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_00: For those fasting during this season, moments of hunger may serve as a reminder of that dependence.
• 4:14
SPEAKER_00: Hunger has a way of exposing what is already happening beneath the surface.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_00: It reminds us that we are not sustained by our own strength.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_00: Whether fasting from food or setting aside something else, each interruption can become an invitation to pray, to wait, and to remember that God is already working in ways we cannot yet see.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_00: Perhaps the most encouraging part of this passage is that God meets Nehemiah in the moment of exposure, not after he has everything figured out.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_00: The king notices his sadness before Nehemiah ever presents his request.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_00: God's provision begins moving before the plan is even spoken aloud.
• 5:00
SPEAKER_00: This passage invites us to slow down and pay attention to what God may be stirring within us.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_00: Rather than rushing towards solutions, we can sit honestly with him and trust that the God who places burdens on our hearts is already at work beyond our review.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_00: The courage Nehemiah demonstrates here is not first the courage to rebuild a city, it is the courage to be seen, to remain dependent, and to trust God with what happens next.
• 5:35
SPEAKER_00: Questions to consider What burden, hope, or concern has God placed on your heart that may be inviting you to deeper trust before action?
• 5:47
SPEAKER_00: A prayer prompt, prayer for dependence.
• 5:51
SPEAKER_00: Ask God for courage to trust His timing and continue trusting His work while the next step is still unclear to you.
