- 0:00hey ru how's it going over there 00:09 --> 00:17 act naturally you know i love that ringo song uh act naturally is there an actual 00:17 --> 00:23 ringo song ringo is the most underrated beetle well is he underrated 00:23 --> 00:32 i know he's rated no i i think he he brought something to the beetles that 00:32 --> 00:38 there's balance you can't have four john lennons definitely not for paul mccartney if we had four 00:38 --> 00:45 john lennons we wouldn't have any beetles left too soon too soon 30 years later uh you know i'll say 00:45 --> 00:53 this about ringo he has aged the best uh the two deaths not withstanding sorry yeah dying 00:53 --> 01:03 really uh it does affect aging i've heard yeah anyways yeah ringo star has a song called act 01:03 --> 01:11 actually okay i had no idea about acting and if i was a bigger beetles fan i would know but it's uh 01:11 --> 01:13 it's a gooder okay well i'll have to look that up 01:13 --> 01:37 so during this podcast even though we've known each other our whole lives it's still kind of hard to 01:37 --> 01:45 act natural because we know there's a audience of 10 maybe 12 people listening and it's we're kind of 01:45 --> 01:51 performing to them even though they're not here i'll tell you because i have another podcast oh 01:51 --> 01:55 yeah that's right already plugging it already plugging it wow it's feel free to plug your podcast 01:55 --> 02:00 there ruben always hungry podcast always hungry is that what your podcast is called yeah that's what i was 02:00 --> 02:07 always hungry podcast okay anyways it's great when you talk to people and they feel the need to tell 02:07 --> 02:13 you that they haven't listened to your podcast i have listened to your podcast i know that yeah i know 02:13 --> 02:20 that you have that's like that's kind of the point there like but there's like a point made right where i 02:20 --> 02:27 guess people don't want to disappoint you or they want to rub it in well it's i'm i know you're saying i've 02:27 --> 02:32 had people friends at work uh-huh um maybe they're not gonna be my friends anymore no just i'm just 02:32 --> 02:36 kidding but i've had people at work tell me i am not going to listen to your podcast 02:36 --> 02:45 they have they haven't they oh because i've you know as we do at work i'll talk about you know my 02:45 --> 02:50 interest my likes and people have asked me oh what's this rocky podcast all about and i've told them 02:50 --> 02:55 and then i in turn have had some of these same people say to me well that's great just so you know 02:55 --> 03:03 i will not be listening to your podcast wow yeah but in a way that's not rude but just honest well 03:03 --> 03:09 yeah you probably won't be losing friends because they probably weren't a friend true and i could say 03:09 --> 03:14 that because they are not listen yeah you can say whatever you want about them right now because 03:14 --> 03:17 they're not listening but they're missing out oh are they ever 03:17 --> 03:42 yeah well welcome to the going the distance podcast this is episode four this is episode four 03:42 --> 03:48 ryan where did we leave the good folks i hope everyone has recovered from that hot first date 03:48 --> 03:56 between uh mr rocky balboa and miss adrian they had a tender kiss uh-huh and we left there that's where 03:56 --> 04:02 we left off i yeah i went straight home after that and had a cold shower i did too i remember wait 04:02 --> 04:08 where we were it was very awkward uh it was an awkward cold shower i actually remember the last 04:08 --> 04:14 time that we bathed together again we're brothers we are brothers and so you grew up you know bathing 04:14 --> 04:19 together your memory may i just say your memories okay you have a memory of an elephant as you know 04:19 --> 04:25 elephants never forget yes but it's one of those memories where i believe you that you haven't forgotten 04:25 --> 04:32 certain things or or you've remembered things but all i know i was in the third grade okay can i be that means i'm in the 04:32 --> 04:37 fifth grade there's no way i know i know i know there's no well you know what if we bathed together 04:37 --> 04:45 when i was well this was it wasn't even a bath it was a shower you're old enough to be in showers we 04:45 --> 04:51 might have to edit this out but you can't you can't edit it out it was innocent well of course it was 04:51 --> 04:56 innocent we yeah we we we know that it was i'm glad i clarified that yeah for all those that were 04:56 --> 05:01 thinking oh well yeah but you know it's funny this is a western culture thing i mean there's villages of 05:01 --> 05:08 just nudity yes the whole village is like it's an exhibitionist if there was something to exhibit 05:08 --> 05:15 but that's just what it is yes it's the equivalent of people wearing tank tops these villages don't 05:15 --> 05:19 don't have tops i know we're talking about rocky here but i gotta tell you here's a little game that 05:19 --> 05:26 i play when i go to the beach and i see that somebody's about to take off their shirt the guy i try to guess 05:26 --> 05:32 guess what the body hair is going to be oh guess their body hair guess the body hair is there gonna 05:32 --> 05:37 be back hair is it gonna be thick is it gonna be sparse and nine times out of ten if they're like a 05:37 --> 05:42 really buff person no body hair whatsoever sure well they've taken care of their body and they want 05:42 --> 05:49 the contours to not be shadowed yeah well that's uh that's interesting uh guess their body hair and it's 05:49 --> 05:55 guess the body hair so for those you can play this at home when you go to the beach is this usually a 05:55 --> 06:03 female or male version of this game well you can guess you can guess either way either way i guess can be made 06:03 --> 06:09 it's a gender neutral uh game we are we are definitely we are gender equality here we are 06:09 --> 06:16 females can have body hair on their back too if they so we'll choose they can have the hair replacement 06:16 --> 06:23 stuff yes i'm a bald guy i could probably get the whole plugs put in and if they want to get plugs put 06:23 --> 06:28 on their back i'm sure they could where's this podcast going i have no idea all right so the first date 06:28 --> 06:35 is over so rocky goes to the gym shortly after his first date with adrian he goes back to the gym 06:35 --> 06:41 the fella i forget his name might have to google this later but the character the the guy that told rocky 06:41 --> 06:46 that his stuff was on skid row the same characters out there sleeping on the sidewalk or cleaning up outside of mickey's gym 06:46 --> 06:53 and he tells rocky hey mickey's looking for you and rocky goes oh yeah the guy mentions i believe i'm paraphrasing here 06:53 --> 06:58 and there's uh fans that i've personally have talked to who have seen this movie many many times and they're 06:58 --> 07:04 going to probably be screaming at the podcast right now like who this character's name is and what he said 07:04 --> 07:09 exactly but the dialogue was basically hey rocky mickey's looking for you they talked about the fight that 07:09 --> 07:13 they just had like rocky had with spider rico or something like that and rocky says he has to rest 07:13 --> 07:20 because his back hurts and the fella says your back hurts and then rocky says yeah you deaf my back hurts 07:20 --> 07:26 and then rocky proceeds to walk into the gym and then the character on the street says i'm not deaf i'm just 07:26 --> 07:32 short that whole interchange has always puzzled me throughout the years so if anybody out there 07:32 --> 07:38 could comment on our page please what that was about and if i'm hearing it wrong because rocky says that 07:38 --> 07:45 he's not going to rest because his back hurts it's like what our grandpa would say i can't play because 07:45 --> 07:51 i got a bone in my knee it's just like a silly nonsicle thing that you say it must have been that and 07:51 --> 07:58 again that's what we talked about earlier was was rocky playing the dumb card that he knew people knew 07:58 --> 08:05 him or thought him to be and so he played it up to for humor's sake don't we all you play that role 08:05 --> 08:11 like i'm the youngest sibling and i know no matter what my experience is if we're all together at some 08:11 --> 08:16 point i'm still the youngest sibling yeah because you haven't lived as much life as we had no matter 08:16 --> 08:24 how how much i've still got two years on you i've got two years the wisdom i have garnered in these last 08:24 --> 08:31 two years yeah tell me about in two years you'll know in two years in two years time you will know 08:31 --> 08:37 what i have what i have learned thank you thank you no but i think that's that's the case sometimes we 08:37 --> 08:44 just kind of play that role whatever that we think we have so yeah perhaps he's playing that i really 08:44 --> 08:51 really believe as i guess other people do the screen writing that stallone did was amazing yes to have 08:51 --> 08:56 that little scene of i'm not deaf i'm just short i'd imagine perhaps like 90 of the people watching 08:56 --> 09:02 the movie that just enjoyed the movie and watch it would miss that little exchange that's the beauty 09:02 --> 09:08 of any movie or book or anything that you enjoy and i know rocky fans are not unique in watching a movie 09:08 --> 09:15 multiple times there are fans of wizard of oz casablanca all these other movies that are you know 09:15 --> 09:20 historically great movies people have seen hundreds of times the rocky horror picture show speaking of 09:20 --> 09:25 that's a great call classic people go to the theater over and over and over again but that's 09:25 --> 09:31 the beauty of when you like something you always seem to catch a little nuance a little scene that you 09:31 --> 09:38 never saw before well the rocky series especially this rocky is full of those nuances a lot of nuances 09:38 --> 09:44 yeah but to to write that i'm not deaf i'm short it says something about stallone's creativity 09:44 --> 09:50 well yeah he had it in spades yeah you know it's not a michael bay film no a michael bay directed 09:50 --> 09:56 rocky film those punches would be like exploding heads well they'd be exploding heads a lot of a lot of 09:56 --> 10:02 there wouldn't be a shy girl probably a lot of slow motion yes there would be there'd be a girl 10:02 --> 10:10 looking to the sky in a slow motion way it's at some point yes yes at some point somebody would be looking 10:10 --> 10:14 to the sky and it's always in the direction of the sun so they have to put their hands over their eyes 10:14 --> 10:21 to stop the glare yes a lot more sunglasses aviators yep so he goes inside the gym he goes inside the gym 10:21 --> 10:26 goes up to mickey i think believe mickey's probably working with dipper again he goes up to mickey hey 10:26 --> 10:32 i heard that paul's people were looking for me and mickey hands him a card and mickey says yeah i think 10:32 --> 10:36 they're looking for sparring partners and the rocky repeats oh i think they're looking for sparring 10:36 --> 10:40 partners and then mickey gets mad did i just say that you dummy for something you know whatever you 10:40 --> 10:45 call them yeah i got mad at rocky for repeating what he just said of course the rocky gets mad back 10:45 --> 10:50 and says you know you know i've been coming here for six years and for six years you've been sticking 10:50 --> 10:56 it to me you've been giving me grief for six years i want to know why mickey says you don't want to know 10:56 --> 11:02 and then rocky rocky course says that's right i just want to say you don't want to know you can't handle 11:02 --> 11:07 the truth you can't handle the truth it's very much so it's a very similar interplay and i don't know 11:07 --> 11:14 if uh aaron sorkin the writer of a few good men if you almost if you can compare the two it's it's it's 11:14 --> 11:21 the uh junior officer challenging the senior general yeah saying i want to know why you don't want to know 11:21 --> 11:27 i don't know sure yeah like fine here we go why am i adopted you don't want to know why yeah so maybe 11:27 --> 11:31 even mickey here is trying to protect rocky's feelings saying you don't want to know why 11:31 --> 11:37 then rocky challenges it i want to know why and then mickey tells him hey ruben do you happen to 11:37 --> 11:42 have that quote uh what mickey said back to rocky i do he said and i'm just gonna do it in my voice 11:42 --> 11:47 please you're welcome everybody okay i'm gonna tell you you had the talent to become a good fighter 11:47 --> 11:53 but instead of that you become a leg breaker to some cheap second rate loan shark 11:53 --> 11:59 stop right there let's comment i did thank you i love how he throws the gauze under the bus here 11:59 --> 12:05 it's like he's not just a loan shark he's a second rate loan shark he's a second rate loan shark 12:05 --> 12:11 even in the small neighborhood mickey is aware of gauze yeah and gauze was second rate he's a second 12:11 --> 12:18 rate loan shark poor gauze who's the first class loan shark there was a first rate loan shark but gauze 12:18 --> 12:24 was not the first rate okay and not everybody can be even amongst loan sharks are going to be those 12:24 --> 12:32 rated more than others much like ringo star exactly exactly gauze was the ringo of loan sharks in 12:32 --> 12:40 philadelphia yeah it's a living so rocky says it's a living defensive yeah he's like i gotta make i gotta 12:40 --> 12:47 pay the bills and mickey's famous response was it's a waste of life it's a waste of life so a tough love 12:47 --> 12:54 maybe well yeah i i think the majority of everybody that's listening or that's ever watched it has felt 12:54 --> 13:01 at some point what i'm doing is a waste of life it's a waste of time it is a waste like there's one part 13:01 --> 13:05 where you got to make a living there's the other part where am i really doing what i should be doing 13:05 --> 13:10 i want to share something that my dad said to me when i was an adult a young adult much younger than the 13:10 --> 13:16 rocky character at this time about eight years so i was about 22 23 and my dad made a comment to me about 13:16 --> 13:21 what he saw my behavior at this point in my life again i won't share what that was because it's 13:21 --> 13:27 personal to me and my dad was right i remember it stinging so rocky here of course is an adult he's 30 13:27 --> 13:35 he has a father-like figure as we'll see later in their relationship uh basically call him out on his 13:35 --> 13:40 i want to say waste of life but my dad never said that of course but just having someone from authority 13:40 --> 13:45 even in your adult years that you care about who also cares about you kind of giving you a hard truth 13:45 --> 13:50 it can sting you can almost see in a rocky's face there is he he gets defensive he goes it's a living 13:50 --> 13:57 that's his response his response isn't no i i i was never going to be a good fighter 13:57 --> 14:03 we need that at least i do you know i probably could use it some more you need to be called out 14:03 --> 14:09 on what's working or what's not working yeah absolutely uh the people that care about you are the ones 14:09 --> 14:13 that are gonna well that's what a coach does right there you go so that's what a parent should be 14:13 --> 14:18 doing that's what a coach should be doing that's what that's what mickey was doing so here's a kind 14:18 --> 14:22 of an interesting question of one of our many segways as we do this podcast and others 14:22 --> 14:31 is uh when someone says i'm just being honest is that you know what i'm saying like i just tell people 14:31 --> 14:37 like it is well it's like in jerry mcguire and when jerry was dating the first girl not the renee zell 14:37 --> 14:44 wigger but uh kelly preston's character john travolta's wife john travolta's uh uh scientologist's wife yes 14:44 --> 14:49 where she says something about him and his career and he's like something to the fact that's brutal 14:49 --> 14:53 and because i'm just being honest yeah but you don't need to be brutally honest does that give 14:53 --> 14:58 them a get out of jail free card to say whatever they want oh they might think that yeah i find that 14:58 --> 15:03 but that's what i'm getting i find that approach that some people i don't have that approach it's not me 15:03 --> 15:10 because i like to separate what i think might be best or for that person to know or what i think they 15:10 --> 15:16 should or should not be doing but is it my place well is it my area of authority or is it my let's just 15:16 --> 15:21 let's just take parenting for example i might see somebody do something at a playground let's say a 15:21 --> 15:26 parent scolds their child in such a way that i wouldn't have done that and i think that was 15:26 --> 15:34 inappropriate do i say that to the parent i'm just being honest though sure i'll i'll give you two 15:34 --> 15:40 thoughts on it one is a few years ago i was in a 7-11 and you know sometimes from the slurpee machine 15:40 --> 15:46 a little bit of slurpee from the last right slurpees just kind of hanging there well this kid was about 15:46 --> 15:51 maybe nine and he swept his finger on there and put it in his mouth like here's a little free slurpee 15:51 --> 15:59 and the mom just like hey did i raise you in a barn and just totally embarrassed the kid he was old enough 15:59 --> 16:06 to be embarrassed sure he got scolded in public and then i said to the mom it sounds like you were 16:06 --> 16:12 what was her response the silence so in that scenario that parent was embarrassing the kid 16:12 --> 16:19 and herself and so as a parent you should never embarrass your children right well no when when 16:19 --> 16:25 somebody like shaming them in public yeah so your comment that you mentioned that dad said to you 16:25 --> 16:30 was done in private is done in private right out of love it was not shaming by the way for the record 16:30 --> 16:36 it was it was hard love tough love that actually did help it stung at first sure yeah but i was like 16:36 --> 16:43 you know what when i found later in my life when i would do that behavior trait i still think that my 16:43 --> 16:48 dad was right it stung them but i see what he's saying now sure and it's something i really i've worked on 16:48 --> 16:55 since in the last 18 years i've worked on it he knows the ropes sure showed it to you that's that's what 16:55 --> 17:00 parenting is for that's what coaching is for so yeah when somebody is saying i'm just gonna be honest 17:00 --> 17:05 or is that what you stated well i guess i'm kind of going to the extreme you know what i'm talking 17:05 --> 17:11 about when people are like their honesty always seems to be a bit of a negative connotation like that yeah 17:11 --> 17:16 i'm just being honest i'm just being honest i'm sure there's some people who maybe it's coming from a 17:16 --> 17:23 genuine spot perhaps there's probably some people who's not but a good key indicator for me is did i 17:23 --> 17:31 feel the love did i feel the care and concern or did i feel yucky did i feel yeah icky that this 17:31 --> 17:39 interaction not that the truth hurt but the way that they did it if the honesty was designed to make 17:39 --> 17:45 you feel bad probably didn't come from a place of love yeah and it's fine to hear something that's 17:45 --> 17:51 not pleasant of course if it's going to be helpful we'll probably get some unpleasant comments about 17:51 --> 17:57 this episode oh please yeah just uh send them to uh just you know ryan you can send them to me just 17:57 --> 18:02 you know yeah you can send the ruben but you can talk about me behind my back yeah sure sure 18:02 --> 18:07 i won't tell people who they're from you'll just take my word they're from fans ryan 18:07 --> 18:16 so rocket gets the card the famous apollo creed card oh yeah that's right he gets the card from 18:16 --> 18:23 apollo's people do you think that's happening now do you think uh paccio manny and hand out cards 18:23 --> 18:30 hand out cards no it's probably uh email or text i'm drawing a blank right now not manny who did manny 18:30 --> 18:37 fight oh i don't know i i really the name escapes me he retired he won i know he won and then he's 18:37 --> 18:45 yeah yeah it's not a heavyweight we'll definitely edit this out okay i always like the idea of the 18:45 --> 18:51 card when rocky now goes to the offices of apollo creed which i thought was kind of interesting 18:51 --> 18:57 because was this a temporary office apollo from philly i can't quite recall recall it's sure convenient 18:57 --> 19:03 it sure was convenient that that the office well the promoter's office it was jurgens and we know 19:03 --> 19:10 mr jurgens was the promoter the don king to apollo creed there now i used to live in the east coast 19:10 --> 19:16 you can take a train from philly to new york city fairly easily yeah so it could have been a train 19:16 --> 19:21 ride for all we know yeah good point we just didn't see the train ride for the first year of jimmy 19:21 --> 19:27 fallon's show the roots took the train into new york city every day they commuted oh okay it was like 19:27 --> 19:34 an hour or two train ride i had time to do their hair they they did they did they did the guy left the 19:34 --> 19:41 comb in his hair though yeah oh that's the style so i'm saying that perhaps it was just the east coast 19:41 --> 19:46 it could have been thing it could have been so he walks into the office and i love that 19:46 --> 19:53 interchange with the secretary and him it's like i'm here to see uh mr jurgens oh yes yes you're you 19:53 --> 19:59 know it's like madman era yeah very and then she calls literally it's like she could have just 19:59 --> 20:04 hollered from the desk hey jurgens rocky's here do you know who we should have consulted for this 20:04 --> 20:11 our mother she was a secretary she was during this time during that time west coast right but still 20:11 --> 20:14 during that time no train 20:14 --> 20:20 and i love how rocky shows his card 20:20 --> 20:25 he because he yeah he showed the card to the secretary 20:25 --> 20:33 like there would be another rocky balboa showing up to the office and that they he would somehow trick 20:33 --> 20:39 jurgens it is this a funny to me it was a funny interchange and i believe he asked mr jurgens 20:39 --> 20:45 later in the interview if he could keep the card oh wow yeah oh yeah yeah yeah yeah and mr jurgens is 20:45 --> 20:49 like oh of course yeah yeah whatever this is stupid i've got a hundred of these but to rocky was like 20:49 --> 20:55 memorabilia you have you have to keep in mind within the rocky universe where everyone knows this but 20:55 --> 21:01 apollo creed's character was like muhammad ali and mike tyson rolled into one this guy was a machine 21:01 --> 21:07 yeah and i know they played to the movie but i think the average rocky viewer might miss that 21:07 --> 21:13 subtlety because it is big that this guy wasn't just the champ he was revered he was feared and revered 21:13 --> 21:20 like apollo creed and it's mentioned in the movie creed let's get forward to a lot of movies here but 21:20 --> 21:28 spoiler alert i'm seriously saying spoiler alert ready everyone okay apollo creed's son 21:28 --> 21:33 talks to rocky and says rocky who is a better fighter 21:33 --> 21:43 rocky oh yeah yeah or paulo rocky says in the movie creed that apollo was a perfect fighter perfect fighter 21:43 --> 21:49 no one better no one better of course it's in the movie universe of rocky sure that there was not a 21:49 --> 21:55 better fighter in the world and we'll talk later about that scene later when we talk about creed but 21:55 --> 22:02 that just gives you an idea that in this universe apollo was a perfect fighter and he was in his prime and 22:02 --> 22:08 he was the champion of the world so rocky goes in to talk to mr jurgens and he goes in right away yeah i 22:08 --> 22:14 promised you know it's a real honor for you to ask me to literally beat the punching bag of apollo creed 22:14 --> 22:21 so in rocky's mind he was like oh yeah i'm just gonna i'm gonna put on a head gear step in the ring 22:21 --> 22:28 and basically let apollo take some shots on me sure yeah that'd be a great thrill sure i would put my 22:28 --> 22:36 head of gear on right now but still carl weathers take some wow yeah or stallone i don't like spider 22:36 --> 22:42 spider rico still around live yeah yeah and we hope to get him on our show one day absolutely we'd love 22:42 --> 22:48 to have you on spider i know you're listening uh just finished doing the dishes yes are you done doing 22:48 --> 22:55 the dishes in adrian's adrian's restaurant it's just a great little uh acting job of stallone's here 22:55 --> 23:01 where he's talking very quiet very humble like like and i promise i won't take any cheap shots neither 23:01 --> 23:08 and mr jurgens like i don't think you quite understand it's a very okay you know what is 23:08 --> 23:15 that again yeah we talked about this before the podcast recorded that that style of acting that kind 23:15 --> 23:21 of like how she shy like i said like when talky started it might it must have been because you would 23:21 --> 23:30 see it in like the old like looney tunes commercials with a baby face the bank robber yeah and like or the 23:30 --> 23:33 but he had that mouth the kind of had that face and mouth of the gangster 23:33 --> 23:40 that's all i can do that's all my impression yeah yeah but nobody talks like that anymore no they don't 23:40 --> 23:45 talk maybe they do in philly but uh they don't they don't talk like that and you don't hear that kind 23:45 --> 23:51 of conversation anymore no and mr jurgens says well of course rocky you know the champ wants to you know 23:51 --> 23:58 he doesn't want to spar with you he wants to give you a title shot it's again another great acting scene 23:58 --> 24:06 here on stallone's part because rocky is like he's almost embarrassed you see it on his face he's not 24:06 --> 24:13 thrilled at all he's like no he says no the question is asked well why are you saying no 24:13 --> 24:19 because he knows that he's not a championship material that he's going to get creamed by this 24:19 --> 24:25 champion and rightfully so and he says i'm just a ham and egger i love that metaphor he calls himself 24:25 --> 24:30 a ham and egger i'm not too sure what that means but i think it's like just like meat and potatoes yeah 24:30 --> 24:35 meat and potatoes just simple i'm just a simple guy i'm no i'm no i'm an egg breakfast is a great 24:35 --> 24:41 breakfast by the way ham and eggs yeah ham good stuff have you ever had chicken and egg together 24:41 --> 24:45 yeah it's called a mother daughter reunion is that really what's called yeah or mother son reunion 24:45 --> 24:51 yeah yeah i always find it very disturbing having the chicken the egg together well i don't know what i 24:51 --> 24:56 don't know i get over it because if it's done right it's tasty i never heard it called that before i 24:56 --> 25:02 didn't realize it was a title yeah that's that's what i i saw it on a diner menu speaking of being on the 25:02 --> 25:07 east coast yeah because they put there's people that put uh like a egg on their burger i've seen that 25:07 --> 25:13 oh yeah that's delicious never done you have to have the the yolk right a little bit running yeah i can 25:13 --> 25:18 see that i can see that yeah it acts as like a like a mustard almost like a sauce sauce thank you yeah 25:18 --> 25:25 and then you've got your ham and eggs mm-hmm sausage and eggs oh yeah of course but once you say chicken 25:25 --> 25:33 i don't know why it's weird to me well do get it like a chicken sausage and eggs but it's like is that 25:33 --> 25:38 like an introduction is that like a gateway yes it's a gateway because you get like the fatty gristle 25:38 --> 25:44 see the little greasy thing happening and then you get that and huh all right well you know i've just 25:44 --> 25:51 i never crossed that threshold yet i've combined the egg with the chicken i just i feel like the 25:51 --> 25:57 one had a chance of life the other one didn't well it's kind of like the whole family died you know 25:57 --> 25:59 yeah yeah you know like 25:59 --> 26:07 what did you cook first the chicken or the egg yeah maybe it was like a like a um like a murder 26:07 --> 26:15 suicide situation could have been in that in that scene though we don't see rocky agree 26:15 --> 26:21 it's an interesting film scene he says no and then he just says he did not feel like he won the lottery 26:21 --> 26:25 no he was not excited in that moment he wasn't excited but then we cut to the next scene where 26:25 --> 26:30 he's at the press conference well there's sort of the on the tv is a press conference that rocky did 26:30 --> 26:35 that they're watching at their home together i believe adrian and rocky and polly are all sitting 26:35 --> 26:42 together in their living room and polly's sitting there slouched for whatever reason he's slouched 26:42 --> 26:47 really low on his chair just like he looks miserable okay bert young does such a great job 26:47 --> 26:58 as capturing what a polly is yes just that life is beaten i still got my pride but i have like no ego 26:58 --> 27:05 right you know that harvey keitel that's who stallone had in mind i think i can see that 27:05 --> 27:09 harvey keitel but i'm so glad they had burt young harvey keitel what an incredible actor 27:09 --> 27:17 oh yeah yeah he was naked in the piano in the piano in the movie the piano with adrian brody 27:17 --> 27:25 was his name was he in that as well i think i was like the pianist yes there's what's the piano 27:25 --> 27:28 so yeah adrian brody was not naked in the penis 27:28 --> 27:36 the pianist well it's actually pronounced penis 27:36 --> 27:48 has anyone under the age of 12 ever said you're a great penis and not giggled 27:48 --> 27:51 well is anyone over the age of 12 27:51 --> 28:01 yeah i remember i purposely say piano player one who plays the piano i say pianist and uranus 28:01 --> 28:11 oh my goodness so adrian brody in the in the pianist was never naked harvey keitel and the piano 28:11 --> 28:19 i don't know i don't know the piano i had the girl from true blood in it and a paquin oh she was a 28:19 --> 28:25 nominee or she won no she won an oscar and youngest female oscar winner believe was she was like 12 when 28:25 --> 28:32 that came out and holly hunter was in as well oh interesting yeah the piano i i don't know maybe i'll 28:32 --> 28:39 check it out i probably won't you probably won't harvey keitel great actor but boy paulie you know it's 28:39 --> 28:43 interesting we talked earlier about the other actors that of course were up for the role of rocky 28:43 --> 28:51 i've always wanted to see in the alternate universe absolutely the like i want to keep what we have but just for 28:51 --> 28:57 poops and giggles to see what this movie would have looked like if burt reynolds was rocky as a really 28:57 --> 29:02 but he'd have to keep the mustache on well you'd have to keep the mustache yeah well that's where he gets his power 29:02 --> 29:08 is that chuck norris though it does another thing chuck gets it from his beard or maybe he goes for mustache 29:08 --> 29:15 i don't know burt like he owes his career to that that stash speaking of guess the body hair 29:15 --> 29:22 oh burt reynolds burt reynolds just just google burt reynolds bear rug we've talked about this yeah 29:23 --> 29:33 what this is your second warning you are to google where were we okay so oh yes we're watching tv burt 29:33 --> 29:39 young and burt young we'd love to have you on one day because just so we could just tell you from our 29:39 --> 29:45 mouth to your ears your portrayal of paulie one of the greatest characters ever in cinematic history 29:45 --> 29:50 bar none one of the greatest like wingmen to another to the main character like i can't think 29:50 --> 29:57 of another iconic character like we're talking watson sherlock no watson doesn't have anything on sherlock 29:57 --> 30:03 we're talking about i would say batman robin like let's say lois lane to clark kent to paulie to rocky 30:03 --> 30:10 yeah well in life and on screen the most interesting relationships are those that are kind of mismatched 30:10 --> 30:14 okay yeah that's right there yeah they couldn't be two different people 30:14 --> 30:19 yeah if there wasn't adrian involved they wouldn't be hanging out no there's no way that's what makes 30:19 --> 30:25 the interesting that's what makes the relationship so interesting and rocky over the years in these 30:25 --> 30:32 movies loved paulie it might have been the only one that did the next adrian of course i know i know and 30:32 --> 30:37 that's what makes them a family yeah yeah no matter how dysfunctional your family is they're your family 30:37 --> 30:42 yeah what'd you say ruben yes my dysfunctional rind i mean i'm sorry i mean my brother you know i might 30:42 --> 30:51 have to edit that out he went there i can't believe you could what a dumb joke so they're watching the 30:51 --> 30:56 they're watching the interview this is another great scene when you watch this interview that he has on 30:56 --> 31:01 the tv for this press conference this was quite a novelty back then like we we're almost kind of used to 31:01 --> 31:08 that everyone seems to be on tv from youtube to our podcast yeah getting your voice out there is not as 31:08 --> 31:15 unique as it once was but 1975 76 it's a big deal for on tv to be on tv yeah even at the local station 31:15 --> 31:21 is quite a big deal yeah a lot a lot of people aspire to be on community uh networks oh ruben are you 31:21 --> 31:26 plugging another one of your shows the ruben show so let me get this straight you have 31:26 --> 31:33 you have a podcast called always is it always hungry always hungry okay so you have that and 31:33 --> 31:40 you have your own cable network show i do yes the the ruben show named after yourself well you know it's uh 31:42 --> 31:47 allows for flexibility and i can't get fired so can people only watch this on their local cable 31:47 --> 31:51 network or is there somewhere else they can see these episodes uh facebook facebook.com forward 31:51 --> 31:57 slash the ruben show or youtube.com forward slash the ruben show ruben is spelled r-u-b-a-n 31:58 --> 32:03 so people will find out if you have a face for radio or face for television i have a face for radio okay 32:03 --> 32:04 oh well you don't spoil it 32:07 --> 32:13 okay that's great yeah please by all means check out both of these i i i enjoyed these shows just as much as 32:13 --> 32:19 i enjoyed this rocky podcast which can we plug this podcast by the way sure what's it called again the 32:20 --> 32:24 rocky podcast going the distance there's always called going the distance it's called going the 32:24 --> 32:28 distance going the distance and we're doing the rocky series the rocky series yes it's called yeah 32:28 --> 32:33 going the distance i like that one oh good because that's what it's called i hope so because that's what 32:33 --> 32:39 we've been advertising as such yes so if you got here today you didn't get here by listening to this 32:39 --> 32:45 episode i'm sure no probably not probably not again the scene i like the scene because we see rocky at 32:45 --> 32:49 the interview and he it's great because he's wearing a sweater now you might not notice the sweater but 32:49 --> 32:56 you gotta imagine this is the nicest sweater rocky has you can just tell it's a little bit nicer than 32:56 --> 33:01 any other piece of clothing he has he's trying to look good for the press conference sure and he's giving an interview and 33:01 --> 33:07 they're talking to him i forget the comment that they made this is our bad we didn't take notes on every 33:07 --> 33:13 moment of the two hours we apologize to all the hard hard hardcore rocky fans out there but there was a 33:13 --> 33:18 there was a comment made to rocky during the press conference that i guess was viewed as a cheap shot 33:18 --> 33:23 yes paulie makes mention like you're gonna let him take cheap shots on you and yeah he says oh it doesn't 33:23 --> 33:28 bother me it's fine and then they also mentioned the interview that he's getting 150 000 for this match 33:28 --> 33:33 150 000 is a lot of money now back then i think if we did the math it's probably anywhere from two to 33:34 --> 33:41 four hundred thousand dollars now inflation costs yeah so i went to in u.s inflation calculator.com and 33:41 --> 33:53 according to them uh in 1976 100 000 would be uh 418 000 it was actually 150 000 that he was given oh 150 33:53 --> 34:00 yes uh my apologies boy that's a good chunk of change right there all right so 150 000 now that would 34:00 --> 34:10 be 627 000 627 000. holy smoke so you know what i i would let pretty much anybody punch me in the head 34:11 --> 34:19 for 627 000. so even this is interesting because we don't see that piece of information given on film 34:19 --> 34:24 to rocky's character but it happened in that interview because rocky doesn't have any management 34:24 --> 34:30 and that comes up later of course so it's just rocky representing himself so mr jergens would have said hey 34:30 --> 34:36 look i know you just said no and the camera's about to pan away but here's a conversation you're going to 34:36 --> 34:43 have after the camera leaves how does this in today's talk in today's talk ruben do you want to go in the 34:43 --> 34:49 ring with pacquiao sure oh right now yeah just have him go in the ring no absolutely not he wants to 34:49 --> 34:53 fight he wants to fight an unknown guy who doesn't know how to box very well uh you know i think we've 34:53 --> 34:58 already established that i have my own community network television so so yeah he promises not to 34:58 --> 35:07 hit you in the face though he only shots at the gut and chest bring it on well no no money no money no 35:07 --> 35:13 no thank you but you'll be famous no thank you how does six hundred thousand dollars us sound yes 35:13 --> 35:19 please see exactly so even everybody has a price it's six hundred thousand dollars yeah i'd go in a ufc 35:19 --> 35:26 cage and say okay but you know goodbye teeth well i'll buy some new ones yeah i'll buy some yeah well 35:26 --> 35:33 i'm covered but that being said a little throw in there does your cable network show provide you a 35:33 --> 35:41 dental coverage uh no um no i ryan's in the the navy i am in the navy we have dental coverage yeah which 35:41 --> 35:47 is great it's wonderful so when this amount is mentioned in the tv interview that everyone's watching 35:47 --> 35:52 for the first time it's it's funny he never told paulie the amount so paulie hears this information 35:52 --> 35:59 right now yeah for the first time he hears this 150 000 slash 600 000 look at the town he's in 35:59 --> 36:04 look where he's at he can't be telling everybody and now he perks up a little bit he says hey uh 36:05 --> 36:10 hey rock now remember he's been asking for the job to work with gosal so he's looking for extra cash we 36:10 --> 36:15 get it times are tough there's no shame looking for extra money so now his mind's spinning the wheels are 36:15 --> 36:20 turning in paulie's mind hey hey rocko you know you're gonna need some help you know with training 36:20 --> 36:26 stuff rocky's like no i i train alone i'm fine i don't need anything and paulie's like you know i can you 36:26 --> 36:30 know i can i carry the buckets for you and you know take care of things in the gym and stuff for 36:30 --> 36:37 you no i'm okay and you can see paulie getting fuming you know like he's blowing me off and adrian goes 36:37 --> 36:42 rocky's okay he doesn't need any help he's got you know he can do this on his own the funny thing she 36:42 --> 36:48 said you know thomas edison or or einstein already dropped out of class and all this stuff and like so 36:48 --> 36:54 so and so like these great thinkers ironically you know had failed in their studies but they came to 36:54 --> 37:03 be great people in society and paulie's response was was that so we see adrian already that supportive 37:03 --> 37:10 character of her fighter boyfriend you know he he can do it a lot of other underdogs have done it 37:10 --> 37:17 rocky can't do you know how many people would give their left arm i was gonna say left nut you were 37:17 --> 37:21 gonna say left i was gonna say left but you went left arm do you know my wife is missing the left 37:21 --> 37:27 arm ruby yeah i didn't know which side it was left arm okay i was gonna say left nut and i thought no i 37:27 --> 37:32 don't want she doesn't she's not missed well what well she's missing those but yeah she's missing the 37:32 --> 37:41 left and right and right i apologize the point is i was wondering what becky got for the left arm me 37:43 --> 37:50 she probably wants it back yeah anyways the the point is what man wouldn't give to have a woman be 37:50 --> 37:54 supportive like that yeah absolutely adrian was the ultimate support now she had her ups and downs 37:54 --> 37:59 as we'll talk about later obviously in other movies but no but you hear that ultimately you go from alone 37:59 --> 38:04 yeah you go from alone nobody and all of a sudden got this fight all of a sudden you got this girl 38:05 --> 38:10 all of a sudden hey things are looking up for a rocko things are looking up and he's keeping his cool like at least 38:11 --> 38:16 externally he's keeping his cool he didn't announce everybody the money you know yeah he didn't post it 38:16 --> 38:24 on facebook no no so he goes out to uh the yard say goodbye to adrian he's standing at the edge of the 38:24 --> 38:29 property before he leaves he says adrian remember when i told you that those things that they said about 38:29 --> 38:38 me didn't bother me she goes yeah he does that really quiet it did this is a really again again 38:38 --> 38:45 again we'll say it a hundred times stallone's writing that little sequence like an average writer or even 38:45 --> 38:51 a bad average maybe even a good writer might have missed throwing that in well what stallone really 38:51 --> 38:57 threw in was honesty yeah and there's an ambulance going by standby it's funny that we bring up ambulance 38:57 --> 39:05 talk about rocky to remind me sirens well when we're talking about rocky yeah oh cool well we can 39:05 --> 39:10 talk about right now real quick let me just say we'll just take three seconds i'll say it now might as 39:10 --> 39:17 well the beginning title sequence a credit sequence that they did at the beginning of rocky 2 is the most 39:17 --> 39:26 painstaking five minutes of rocky movie film i have ever experienced and you've seen rocky 5 i've seen 39:26 --> 39:32 rocky 5 that was a joke i know and we're but that beginning scene is basically the whole thing is the music 39:32 --> 39:48 people that watch rocky 2 that 1979 soundtrack music for the beginning part of that movie 39:49 --> 39:55 and the whole sequence is the ambulance drive of the fighters from the ring to the hospital but they use 39:55 --> 40:02 that transferring i mean this is a long drive from the hospital to the ring or the ring to the hospital 40:02 --> 40:08 but that whole sequence is just mind-numbing i but i'm such a rocky purist i've never skipped it 40:09 --> 40:14 but when i'm sitting through watching this i was like oh my goodness stallone you could edit this out you 40:14 --> 40:22 could just maybe he did maybe he edited something worse out he might have i don't know why they didn't just do a quick 40:22 --> 40:27 little sequence of like through five seconds showing that that the ambulance has arrived to the hospital 40:27 --> 40:34 and just have the uh title credits like of you know talia shire and burt young and editor and producer 40:34 --> 40:40 all that stuff small letters in the corner while carl weathers and rocky are talking to each other in the 40:40 --> 40:45 wheelchairs like they could have you know how they do that now like it's just it's not it's a non-issue who 40:45 --> 40:51 but these took that whole time to tell the whole cast and crew with that cheesy 1979 music that is the 40:51 --> 40:57 worst soundtrack of all the rockies they excel at soundtrack but that opening credit scene is the 40:57 --> 41:02 worst but maybe it's just contrast we'll start off really bad and it'll only get better from here oh 41:02 --> 41:08 yeah well we'll get to that we're getting a taste a literal taste hey talking about chickens talking 41:08 --> 41:14 about eggs what famous scene are we getting to now there i have eggs in the fridge do you want to do it 41:14 --> 41:21 right now have you ever done it we have not i have not done it look let me scratch that i have swallowed 41:21 --> 41:25 a raw egg maybe two but i have not done five and it was back when i was a teenager do you want to do it 41:25 --> 41:32 right now i got eggs if you want to swallow five eggs right now on the podcast we can do it all right 41:32 --> 41:41 all right let's do it we will do it but i might stop the reason why the reason why i breathe that i 41:41 --> 41:46 said that i didn't want to film i did want to film that you want to fill it yeah film it well yeah we'll 41:46 --> 41:52 put it on our going the distance podcast all right yeah to promote sure this episode sure but i'm not 41:52 --> 41:56 ready right now all right so it's funny but that that's why i wanted to record the yes 41:56 --> 42:03 mm-hmm and then we'll talk about okay okay well it's just about what i thought it would be like 42:05 --> 42:10 yeah yeah but what about you was it everything you thought it'd be like it reminds me of like 42:10 --> 42:18 when i go to denny's once in a very blue moon yeah and he kept this egg that's undercooked so we're 42:18 --> 42:26 going to post this video yeah on our going the distance uh facebook page and on uh our instagram page and 42:26 --> 42:31 twitter we'll have all habits no matter where you follow us you'll see this nice little 15 second 42:31 --> 42:40 five egg drink unfiltered unedited it's uh it's original rocky recipe we gotta be dylan was ever done 42:40 --> 42:49 this oh please but as any true rocky fan has to do it at least once in a life and like i said i've done it 42:49 --> 42:53 i know i've done it before but neither on camera and i don't think i've ever done five eggs and it is five eggs 42:53 --> 43:01 what time did he wake up in the morning i think it was like 4 30 or something four four four in the 43:01 --> 43:07 morning that's early so i love that he puts on that outfit that grungy gray suit track suit outfit he does 43:07 --> 43:13 he does his little stretches against the building just like like a way better stretch stretch but it's not a 43:13 --> 43:18 real stretch he kind of does a little against the wall and then he does his jog down the street 43:19 --> 43:22 and it's amazing because the streets are empty you always got to think they did film early in the 43:22 --> 43:26 morning because it looks very early in the morning and we know it was natural light so probably early 43:26 --> 43:33 in the morning streets are empty and he's just jogging around one of the best scenes of all the rocky series 43:33 --> 43:40 interchanges and acting we've talked about it already we've hinted at it talked about it is mickey 43:40 --> 43:46 comes to visit rocky in his apartment yes because what's happened here we will we know what's happened 43:47 --> 43:51 it's been announced everywhere of course the buzz amongst the street even back before social media 43:51 --> 43:59 days people talked oh yeah the only difference between social media in 1976 was just the speed of the 43:59 --> 44:04 information but it's not any different people talked and people talked about what they talked about what 44:04 --> 44:10 was viral what was trending well what was trending right now in philly water cooler talk water cooler 44:10 --> 44:17 talk exactly exactly mickey comes up he climbs up those stairs he's to climb up the stairs knocks on the 44:17 --> 44:25 door walkie lets him in mickey tries to play up how nice the apartment is and yeah you know we're old 44:25 --> 44:31 pals we're old friends you know and he calmly talks about the turtles and he goes yeah these would make 44:31 --> 44:39 great soup and rocky did not laugh people don't like jokes about their pets really rude 44:43 --> 44:51 wow coming from the non-pet owner who non-house pet owner domesticated animal owner have i ever made comments 44:51 --> 44:56 about your pets you don't like you have but i'm glad he recognized that 44:59 --> 45:06 stallone wrote that in the film that he too as a probably as a pet owner buckus sure yeah i saw it in 45:06 --> 45:09 the film but i learned that from real life experience oh 45:11 --> 45:15 yes do not uh do not talk poorly about people's pets and so mickey uh 45:16 --> 45:21 maybe he wasn't a turtle fan apologies right apologies look not everyone's a dog owner not 45:21 --> 45:27 everyone's a cat owner not everyone's a turtle owner that's true and so i guess mickey doesn't i 45:27 --> 45:31 think he was just trying to be funny i don't think he really wanted to eat the turtles but rocky was 45:31 --> 45:36 having none of it because we're getting right now in the mood that rocky's like why are you here 45:36 --> 45:41 i i even know why you're here yeah the small talk the small talk yeah sure i like it rocky's drinking a 45:41 --> 45:48 beer mickey says ah don't drink that piss before a fight and rocky kind of gave him a look like don't 45:48 --> 45:54 tell me what to do but what i find interesting even in this moment he puts the beer down puts it on the 45:54 --> 46:02 shelf he kind of gave mickey like i'm gonna do what i want type posture but all the same he put the beer 46:02 --> 46:06 bottle down well he had respect for mickey yeah even in that little moment of like i know why you're here 46:06 --> 46:11 i know you're gonna ask what you're gonna ask for and you just kind of called me out on something that 46:11 --> 46:17 you're right about still did it he still had that weird this that kind of weird like he's right sure 46:17 --> 46:22 i'm gonna maybe segue a little bit here but i was talking to a friend of mine who has an estranged 46:22 --> 46:28 father and anytime that he would call him his dad would kind of allude to kind of what do you want 46:28 --> 46:33 my friend just mentioned to me as if he would say this to his father which which he hasn't all i want 46:33 --> 46:40 is just a dad right that's why i called because i wanted a dad and so here of rocky he's wants that 46:40 --> 46:44 father figure he wants that coach he wants that trainer what's mickey doing here he's here for 46:44 --> 46:48 a paycheck he's here for something he does want that training so yeah that's why you put the beer down 46:48 --> 46:56 because i i'm ready that's a really good uh example of real life with well yeah that's why this movie 46:56 --> 47:03 resonates it resonates with all the relationships all the feelings here of resentment and mischances 47:03 --> 47:08 and uh redemption you know all coming to play here so mickey goes into his whole history of his boxing 47:08 --> 47:14 career he knocked this guy to the ring and during that fight nobody was talking about mickey's fight 47:15 --> 47:21 why wasn't anyone talking about my fight because i had no manager i had no manager mickey's his own 47:21 --> 47:26 failed professional career was because he had no manager the one time when so-and-so put 47:27 --> 47:33 thumb nails or thumbtacks his gloves and i was speaking out the side of my mouth you know for weeks or 47:33 --> 47:38 whatever like i always that imagery again of like it's almost cartoonish well hey the water coming out 47:38 --> 47:46 of the sides of the cheek because i know manager manager and uh rocky's like yeah yeah yeah you had no 47:46 --> 47:52 manager he picks up the darts he starts throwing the darts really hard into the door and mickey has a 47:52 --> 47:57 little startled look like oh man he's actually really kind of aggressive here you can almost see there's a 47:57 --> 48:02 little bit of fear mickey like this is an opposing fella i'm in his house and he's not buying my story 48:02 --> 48:09 no rocky basically says you know i came to those call them out on us look i i came to you six years ago 48:09 --> 48:14 because mickey says well why don't you just ask why don't you just ask me for help and then rocky said you know i 48:14 --> 48:19 i did six years ago i came to you six years ago i came to you you didn't have time for me then 48:20 --> 48:27 now all of a sudden you have time for me and mickey's like well i uh yeah he didn't have any words he had 48:27 --> 48:34 that real kind of like crap he's just calling me out ignoring him for six years and he's right i'm curious to 48:34 --> 48:40 know what happened in stallone's life so stallone if you're listening please uh yes mr stallone please 48:41 --> 48:46 of course of course i that's implied okay when i say stallone it is implied the mister is already 48:46 --> 48:53 implied i'd want to know what actually inspired him at this point in his life because at this point he 48:53 --> 48:59 was working i think as a coat check for 36 a week so he's not making a life i would like to talk to stallone 48:59 --> 49:06 and or at least hear from him what he was what success had he had in his life to draw inspiration 49:06 --> 49:13 from for this moment that somebody would be after his fortune because at this point he didn't have it he 49:13 --> 49:18 was working for 36 a week as a coat check guy so nobody was knocking on his door nobody's knocking on 49:18 --> 49:24 his door wanting a piece of that pie did he have a foreshadow in his own mind that this might be something 49:24 --> 49:30 that's it yeah it's an interesting perhaps what what happened that he would know this type of 49:30 --> 49:38 relationship maybe yeah i mean it's not such a crazy idea that somebody stumbles on success and 49:38 --> 49:42 people come out of the woodwork all of a sudden like oh yeah yeah we're buddies remember remember we used to 49:42 --> 49:49 ride bikes together and 12 years ago you know when we were kids yeah you ever watch uh jimmy kimmel yeah 49:49 --> 49:53 they'll have a guest on and he has that wall of america yeah yeah yeah i say one of these five 49:53 --> 50:00 pupils from your past i find the segment very uncomfortable well did you see the first one i forget who the 50:00 --> 50:08 no the first one was from jimmy kimmel's past right one of the people on there said so jimmy remembered her 50:08 --> 50:15 she's from her art class high school art class in las vegas and she said uh remember you said that if one 50:15 --> 50:21 of us were gonna get big that we would buy each other a house or something along those lines 50:22 --> 50:27 she was telling the true story i believe she was telling a true story you think so yeah oh i just 50:27 --> 50:33 thought it was complete bs no i think i honestly think ruben that they probably could have very well 50:33 --> 50:37 been that conversation and she was kind of calling him out on it because that's what i sensed 50:38 --> 50:44 i i i sent she was just a gold digger either way it was uncomfortable i find that whole segment 50:44 --> 50:48 uncomfortable i don't think they do as much anymore no they did with gwen stefani oh yeah that's right 50:48 --> 50:54 and they did it with somebody else i always find that the person remembering boy they sure have a great 50:54 --> 51:00 memory of this but the person who's famous is kind of like yeah it's weird i actually have a friend 51:00 --> 51:08 acquaintance growing up who is uh his son's famous now i'm not gonna mention the name uh that's the name of 51:08 --> 51:18 the son and his dad's you know from where uh vancouver where i go to vancouver he's friends with um uh 51:19 --> 51:26 who's at the funeral he was yeah um yeah so his son is was in the movie yeah yeah yeah yeah i didn't 51:26 --> 51:33 really i knew it was weird to see them so it's weird to know that because i've seen my friend like on social 51:33 --> 51:38 media trending on facebook and his kid trending on facebook it's it's kind of when i say friend 51:39 --> 51:44 like friends too much of a stretch we hung out as you know teenage kids see each other a couple times in 51:44 --> 51:51 their 20s uh events and so but when you when somebody does become famous it sticks out it really really 51:51 --> 51:56 sticks out i went to the same junior high as steve nash like i can say that yeah well yeah exactly exactly 51:56 --> 52:04 like i saw him play basketball and then but we were never friends but maybe maybe if he if you're to go 52:04 --> 52:09 up to him and say hey do you ever remember a guy named ryan revolcon or jason revolcon our older brother 52:09 --> 52:16 yeah like you might be oh yeah sure maybe maybe but why would he remember me but i remember him not 52:16 --> 52:22 because he was the nba star but when he joined the nba since before he was became as good as he was in the 52:22 --> 52:30 nba i remember thinking was he that good yeah so the celebrity shift did happen where he now he becomes 52:30 --> 52:35 a world known sports star sure but when i first heard whatever 1990 whatever it was when he first 52:35 --> 52:40 joined the nba my first response actually no offense steve i'm sure you're listening i'm sure yeah he's 52:41 --> 52:46 i'm sure he's our number one fan yeah but i remember uh steve when when i heard that you joined the nba my 52:46 --> 52:52 actually my first thought was is he that good because the nba is you know the nba is the nba yeah 52:52 --> 52:57 i don't remember i remember being a good great sports athlete in our school but the idea that one 52:57 --> 53:01 would come from my school somebody that i maybe personally knew that's what makes the world kind of 53:01 --> 53:09 small was oh i guess he is that good and he was he got mvp two years in a row the only person to do so 53:09 --> 53:13 in the nba oh really two years in a row i did not know that certainly the only white person to do it 53:13 --> 53:19 in the nba oh is that so yes wow wow wow hey white lives matter in the nba 53:21 --> 53:25 so of course we've talked about the scene before we're not going to get into again but rocky gets 53:25 --> 53:31 mad and says you know you want to come ringside and watch me get my head face beat in we'll come on in 53:31 --> 53:35 and come move into my place like basically the idea is like you want to be my manager you want to come 53:35 --> 53:39 by ringside and watch me get my face beat in well why you just come in to move into my apartment then 53:39 --> 53:45 we'll be best friends this place stinks this whole place this whole situation stinks you know the whole 53:45 --> 53:51 idea of just like sure you want to watch this circus show play out so even though he i think we're 53:51 --> 53:56 still seeing that he took the money for the money's sake but he knows he's going to get his face beat in 53:57 --> 54:09 he like he's still at this point thinks yeah i did it for the money i think we've started to forget that as a viewer like he's going to do it he's went on his little run he's doing a little bit of training but he's kind of like 54:10 --> 54:17 i'm not going to be nobody i'm going to take the money and run there's no shame in that now i don't 54:17 --> 54:23 mean that in a what do you think this is a real question what do you think the the difference between 54:24 --> 54:33 the superstar success and not having it is like was steve nash nba material was there anybody else on the 54:33 --> 54:40 the team that was nba material or is he the only one on the team he said i am opposed to being it 54:40 --> 54:44 it's funny that you bring that up i actually brought up an old yearbook of when i was in grade eight and 54:44 --> 54:50 he was in grade 10 uh-huh and arbutus won the bc championship that year okay and in the article of 54:50 --> 54:58 or in the yearbook it actually stated because of steve nash interesting so i thought it was interesting too because this is 54:58 --> 55:07 just a yearbook 19 it was 1988 89 year and arbutus junior secondary school won the bc provincials like 55:07 --> 55:15 the best junior high school team in bc and basically said in no large part because of steve they name 55:15 --> 55:21 called him so in a weird way yeah and i were but so for some people i guess in this case he was a star 55:22 --> 55:28 amongst his peers even back then okay in a way this rocky is too because mickey says someone at the age 55:28 --> 55:37 of 22 when he came into the ring he saw that potential rocky but but unlike steve rocky had his focus not 55:38 --> 55:42 just on boxing he kind of spread himself amongst doing other little things here and there never trained 55:42 --> 55:47 hard worked hard kind of he didn't have the eye of the tiger yet he didn't have it easy now 55:49 --> 55:55 but yeah he did he didn't he didn't tap into that potential yeah so the great ending to this sequence 55:55 --> 56:03 was he yells at mickey yes mickey walks out walks down the stairs dejected rocky keeps yelling yeah yelling 56:03 --> 56:09 you hear the yelling from the street yeah so it stinks it stinks but then we see that scene when rocky 56:09 --> 56:14 comes bursting through the door outside it's all panned away we see him run up to mickey 56:16 --> 56:20 mickey jerks back a little bit because he thinks he's going to get hit by rocky because he's just 56:20 --> 56:24 physically yelling at this guy give this a little bit of a jerk back yeah sure and rocky kind of puts 56:24 --> 56:29 his hands up like a come in peace type hands some words were exchanged that we'll never know this my 56:29 --> 56:36 friends i want to know what stallone said they talked on that street where they just gone pop pop pop pop 56:36 --> 56:43 with their mouse but words were exchanged they shook hands or sorry rocky puts his arm around mickey which 56:43 --> 56:50 i loved he puts his arm around mickey and then they break apart rocky shakes his hand waves goodbye and 56:50 --> 56:59 runs back to his house i love that sequence of hey you yelled at me in the gym in your home in mickey's home yeah 56:59 --> 57:07 you came to my home i got it off my chest but what i thought of you then they met on neutral ground 57:08 --> 57:14 then they met on neutral ground ruben yeah made peace and that my friends is the beginning of that 57:14 --> 57:22 relationship that is awesome the mickey rocky relationship we'll end there hey ding ding ding ding ding ding 57:22 --> 57:52 Thank you. 57:52 --> 57:53 Thank you. 57:53 --> 57:53 Thank you.
