Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like today.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. All right, let's get into the
- 0:23stories for today. The first story that I have for
- 0:26you guys is there is some book talk drama going on with an
- 0:31indie author who launched a highly anticipated fantasy debut
- 0:36novel. And essentially all of her
- 0:39readers are saying it's shit. Creator Audra Winter is being
- 0:43talked about across the book talk community after she
- 0:46released a highly anticipated debut novel, The Age of Scorpius
- 0:50and readers are slamming it. Audra built a following of over
- 0:53150,000 on TikTok where she documented her process writing a
- 0:57fantasy novel over the course of ten years and self-publishing it
- 1:01with the help of her audience through means like crowdfunding.
- 1:05Audra's novel sold 6000 presale copies through TikTok shop,
- 1:10which I guess in the literary world is a presale like unheard
- 1:14of for a debut novelist, like somebody who does not kind of
- 1:17have like an author that doesn't have any books under their belt
- 1:20yet. So when it was released, readers
- 1:23were very disappointed. People said it was poorly
- 1:25written, there were grammar and spelling mistakes, and it seemed
- 1:28unfinished. The rating was so low that
- 1:30Goodreads actually disabled her page and readers were demanding
- 1:34refunds. Now, Audra hasn't taken this
- 1:37feedback very well or she was very defensive at first.
- 1:40Now she's made an official response on TikTok saying that
- 1:44she is going to redo her book and that she is going to
- 1:47Crowdsource from her audience, editors and people to help her.
- 1:51She says she wants it to be re released in December, which I
- 1:53guess people who kind of know this space and who have read the
- 1:55book are like the amount of effort that's going to need to
- 1:58go into this novel to fix it. Like December is a lofty goal.
- 2:02OK. So I wanted to talk about people
- 2:04saying that they were scammed. I don't see this necessarily as
- 2:08a scam. I understand spending your money
- 2:09on something and getting, you know, like subpar art
- 2:13essentially or subpar work is very disappointing.
- 2:16It feels like a waste of money. But I mean, how many times have
- 2:19we, like, I don't know, gone to the movies and seen a really
- 2:21shit movie? And you're like, yeah, that was
- 2:22kind of a waste of my money. You know, she didn't Crowdsource
- 2:26money and then never actually released the book.
- 2:29Like, we actually talked about a story like that a few months ago
- 2:31from an author, right? So I don't see this as
- 2:33necessarily a scam. She's also 22, which is often
- 2:36missing from these criticisms. That is so young.
- 2:39Like, this is obviously her first novel.
- 2:41She's still so young. She didn't do anything wrong by
- 2:44documenting this experience on TikTok and getting people
- 2:46excited for this book, in my opinion, You know, like,
- 2:49obviously it didn't live up to anyone's expectations, but she
- 2:53took a shot. She went for it.
- 2:55She has audacity, which is going to get her very far.
- 2:59I actually saw some people say maybe she should consider
- 3:01switching careers into, like, literary marketing because
- 3:04that's really what she succeeded at in this entire situation.
- 3:08But yeah, I don't see this as a scam.
- 3:10Like, people bought in to her story, her vision, You know,
- 3:14what she was putting out on TikTok.
- 3:15They got excited to support her and a lot of the criticism
- 3:18people are in relation to that. People are like, I know this is
- 3:21her debut novel and I'm really proud of like everything she
- 3:24achieved around marketing it and the pre sales and stuff, but
- 3:27like this was kind of trash. So like that is how people are
- 3:31mostly framing it because again, like she is so young and people
- 3:34were excited to be on this journey with her and obviously
- 3:36this has got to be a really difficult situation for her.
- 3:39I think if she had received the feedback better or if it
- 3:41appeared as though she received the feedback better online, then
- 3:45people would have a lot more empathy for her.
- 3:47So she said every the one who bought her book is going to get
- 3:50a free online copy, like digital copy of the book released in
- 3:54December. And I guess we'll see.
- 3:56But yes, that's just a little bit of like book talk drama for
- 3:59you right now. Okay, the next word that I have
- 4:01for you guys, this is crazy. Matt Rife has bought Ed and
- 4:06Lorraine Warren's home and the adjacent occult museum
- 4:11artifacts. Comedian Matt Rife Comedian Matt
- 4:14Rife, OK, who actually on this podcast is better known as
- 4:18Brooke Schofield's axe. He's announced that he has
- 4:20purchased the home of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
- 4:24You know, the haunted like Annabelle dollhouse along with
- 4:27the museum artifacts attached to it.
- 4:29Quote, we are the legal guardians and caretakers of all
- 4:32750 haunted artifacts and items in the Warren Museum, including
- 4:36the Annabelle doll, Matt Rife said announcing his purchase.
- 4:39He purchased it alongside ghost hunter like YouTube ghost hunter
- 4:43Elton Castee. Ed and Lorraine are paranormal
- 4:45investigators. They're working home inspired
- 4:48The Conjuring films, the Annabelle films and Amity Amity
- 4:51Oh my God, I've tried to say this like 4 times you guys,
- 4:54Amityville horror, Amityville horror.
- 4:57Matt clarified. He's not the owner of these
- 4:59things, but he's like their custodian for the next 5 years.
- 5:03And part of these plans sense of like purchasing the
- 5:06custodianship, I suppose of these items is he's going to
- 5:09open the home up and you know, these artifacts up for overnight
- 5:13stays and museum tours. This is the craziest crossover
- 5:17ever. I'm actually surprised there's
- 5:20not like a stricter vetting process for who gets to take
- 5:24care of these items. I'm very surprised that like a
- 5:26YouTube and some random comedian get to just, you know, be the
- 5:30ones that take care of these items for the next 5 years.
- 5:33Like whether you believe, believe in paranormal activity
- 5:36or not and like, OK, I am someone like I love spooky shit,
- 5:40like I love horror movies. I love all that stuff.
- 5:43I wish I could believe in it. Like I want to believe so bad,
- 5:48but I like, I really don't know if I do, but like I want to, I
- 5:51really want to believe. But regardless if you believe in
- 5:55that kind of stuff or not, like there's no denying that that
- 5:58home, those items have very valuable IP attached to them.
- 6:02And now they're going to just let Matt Rife take care of that
- 6:05very valuable like multi million, if not like billion
- 6:08dollar IP for the next 5 years. 28 year old comedian Matt Rife.
- 6:14Like fuck boy Matt Rife, that is so random.
- 6:17Like Matt Rife has not proven to be particularly responsible when
- 6:21it comes to taking care of anything that we have seen his
- 6:24relationships, his audience. Remember that like DV joke that
- 6:28he released as I think was like the beginning of his Netflix
- 6:30special, his career, how he responded to that.
- 6:33Like do we think Matt Rife is the right person to take care of
- 6:37all of this? I'm like, surely this should be
- 6:40some like historian or something.
- 6:41Like they shouldn't just let anybody buy this.
- 6:44I don't know. Okay, the last story that I have
- 6:47for you guys, I'm going to break down the anti feminist
- 6:50influencer girlies that are fighting right now all over X.
- 6:55So Pearl Davis, Sarah Stock, Morgan, Ariel and Emily Wilson
- 6:59are feuding on X right now. We all know Pearl just pearly
- 7:03things, right? She's been desperately trying
- 7:06for years to be embraced as a voice of the far right, but
- 7:10honestly, like she just can't make it.
- 7:13Like she is continually flopped. She doesn't practice what she
- 7:16preaches. So like people can't take her
- 7:18authentically. And the other women in this
- 7:20story are also like far right commentators, influencers,
- 7:24Christian nationalists. OK, OK, so basically what
- 7:27happened? Sarah posted a picture of her
- 7:29new engagement ring on X writing.
- 7:31I won. Pearl quote tweeted this and she
- 7:34wrote hottest right wing E girl taken off the market brackets.
- 7:37Conservative women will always use their marriage and family to
- 7:40build their brand. Yeah, isn't that like what you
- 7:43preach? OK, I don't know.
- 7:44And then Emily Wilson jumped in writing the ring size with a
- 7:48dead skull emoji. So shady.
- 7:51And then Morgan Ariel jumped in to defend Sarah against Emily
- 7:54being like shady about her ring size.
- 7:56OK, And normally I don't have like an issue reading direct
- 8:02quotes or direct tweets, but like, this tweet has like so
- 8:05many wild accusations. And I've just seen like everyone
- 8:09that's covered this has not actually quoted it.
- 8:11And I feel like that's for a reason.
- 8:12So I'm not going to read the entire thing, but I do need to
- 8:15read the best line to come out of this tweet.
- 8:19She made all these accusations against Emily and then she
- 8:21wrote, you're a disgusting feminist horror with a Jezebel
- 8:24spirit who uses filters in all of her videos.
- 8:29That is actually such a compliment.
- 8:32Like, I wish somebody would tweet that about me.
- 8:36That's like, the best read of all time.
- 8:37I love it. And then she signs off.
- 8:39But yeah, I'm the one who needs money.
- 8:42You gold digging hope so. Yeah, I am better than you.
- 8:45That's how she ended it. I love it.
- 8:47Oh my God, I love it. OK so then Pearl and Morgan were
- 8:49going back and forth tweeting really like racist, homophobic,
- 8:53sexist things at each other. Emily subtweeted that Sarah's
- 8:57man quote can't even afford a ring and questioned how they'd
- 9:01fund a trad wife lifestyle if he can't even afford a ring.
- 9:04And then she compared Sarah's ring to a $70 Etsy listing.
- 9:09Sarah clapped back with more slut shaming, saying Emily has a
- 9:12triple digit body count. And then Emily posted on
- 9:15Instagram blasting quote broke conservative men for expecting
- 9:19women to give up careers for small rings.
- 9:23Oh my God. OK, so I just wanted to cover
- 9:26this really quickly. Like I said, I wasn't going to
- 9:27read like all the tweets because a lot of them are like really
- 9:29horrific. But, you know, I think it's
- 9:31like, fascinating to watch all of these women turn on each
- 9:34other, especially because it spawned from Sarah basically
- 9:37doing like the exact thing that they all preach, right?
- 9:39That they all say they want women to do, which is like, love
- 9:42Jesus and find a man to marry. And then she posts something
- 9:45that kind of goes in direct opposition to like, what they
- 9:48think that should look like, which is like, her ring is too
- 9:50small or whatever. And it makes you realize how
- 9:52fragile their beliefs really are.
- 9:55Who's the snowflake now? All right guys, that's it for
- 9:59Mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 10:01I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review,
- 10:04and subscribe. Please remember that I'm a
- 10:06disgusting feminist with a Jezebel spirit who uses filters
- 10:09in all her videos too. I love you guys and I will talk
- 10:12to you on Monday. Bye.
