Transcript
- 0:00I mean that was outstanding performance, but when you guys keep the ball in hand you get momentum the whole time and you're dangerous.
- 0:06All of a sudden we've got Scott Barrett, Tupovai, Frizzell's coming back into the side.
- 0:11I think the biggest problem for you know Australia, and I just don't know if they've got the depth of the squad.
- 0:16They're so close to competing, they just couldn't stay with the all-backs.
- 0:22Yeah, your audio is breaking up.
- 0:24I think your internet connection's not great.
- 0:26How relaxing it is just doing the show now that Victor's internet crapped out.
- 0:30I know.
- 0:31It's quite relaxing, isn't it?
- 0:37Right, welcome to Rugby Rivals brought to you by Ram Hand-to-Hand Couriers.
- 0:41And so, JK, a bit happier this week after getting smashed by... Are we number one in the world now?
- 0:48Are we back to number one in the world because Australia beat South Africa and then we beat Australia.
- 0:53So we're back to number one in the world.
- 0:55I don't know.
- 0:55I haven't looked.
- 0:58Can you just calm down, sir, please?
- 1:01One victory after three losses and all of a sudden…
- 1:05You're really getting like the English media.
- 1:07It's not good.
- 1:11It's really bad.
- 1:13But well done.
- 1:13What a performance.
- 1:14I thought the 80s were outstanding.
- 1:19Physicality was there.
- 1:20I mean, the DNA that they've been talking about, how they want to play, was definitely there.
- 1:25So, yeah, well done to the 80s and I'm proud.
- 1:29But because I'm back to you this weekend.
- 1:31See?
- 1:32No more rugby.
- 1:33I was just winding you up, Victor, but I think one of the things that we wanted to see was a level up and an improvement in performance.
- 1:45And I think coming off the three losses, it was really, really important that we showed some improvement and especially some physicality.
- 1:55I think, you know, and I was so pleased for Scott Barrett because I think
- 2:02People sort of have been criticising him unfairly about probably being the captain and a reluctant captain and all that sort of stuff.
- 2:11But, you know, here's a world-class Locke who actually loves getting in and smashing into stuff, Victor, which, you know, you used to love doing.
- 2:20And so I was just really pleased for him.
- 2:21I thought that was outstanding.
- 2:22And getting Frizzell back out there, you know,
- 2:29I thought was good.
- 2:30He's going to be another important link.
- 2:33So, yeah, I'm just really happy that, you know, and we've still got one to go.
- 2:37We've still got the suite to go, and I think that's really important.
- 2:41JK, can I just clarify, Victor, did you really like smashing people or did you like standing in the back line and jumping up and catching the ball at line-out time?
- 2:50Yeah, I know.
- 2:51I had Bucky's doing those things for me.
- 2:54It was always nice just sending him in, go hurt the people, and I could stand in the back, do my chip kicks, jump in that line out.
- 3:03Look, Victor, everyone's been asking me since I've been home about what I thought of South Africa and...
- 3:09in what I thought of New Zealand.
- 3:11And I think that, you know, how I sum it up is I think the South African side is like we were from 2-11 to 2-15, really mature, lots of players.
- 3:21You know, I think...
- 3:23I think one of the things that Australia struggle with, so one of the nicest things for the All Blacks on the weekend was obviously getting that win, which was important, but all of a sudden we've got Scott Barrett back.
- 3:37Tupovai, I thought, had another really good game.
- 3:40Frizzell's coming back into the side.
- 3:42We've got Fabian Holland, who was a little bit injured last weekend.
- 3:46So all of a sudden, we're starting to get the depth.
- 3:48I think the biggest problem for Australia, and I thought they did some great things on attack in the first half, but I just don't know if they've got the depth of the squad, especially on their bench.
- 4:00you know, whereas I thought the bench came, our bench came on on the weekend and continued to raise the level, which is what South Africa do when their bench comes on.
- 4:08Um, whereas I just think Australia, um, you know, their bench is probably not as good as they probably need it to be.
- 4:17Yeah.
- 4:17We've talked about, uh, a few of your Japanese boys coming back and I mean, uh, getting them back a guy like Frizzell, um,
- 4:28He's outstanding.
- 4:29I mean, before he went over to Japan, he was your first choice blindside flanker, and he just performed in Japan as well.
- 4:36So I think that will make a big difference, having those big names, big players back in your squad coming off the bench.
- 4:43And, you know, I mean, if you look at Super Rugby as well, the Australian side struggle against the New Zealand side.
- 4:50So it's very difficult.
- 4:51It's always going to be difficult for them.
- 4:54to come in a test match and really compete.
- 4:57If they get smashed every weekend by the New Zealand side, I mean, that mentality is they can't beat New Zealand.
- 5:04So it is tough for them.
- 5:07I still think they're so close to competing.
- 5:10It's just that physicality.
- 5:12And I mean, they tried to play at the tempo of the Allbacks and unfortunately they just couldn't stay with the Allbacks.
- 5:18I mean, that was an outstanding performance.
- 5:21Again, talking about that DNA, keeping ball in hand.
- 5:24But when you guys keep the ball in hand, you get momentum the whole time and you're dangerous.
- 5:28So it really looks good.
- 5:31You say ball in hand, but probably we kicked the high ball more than we'd kicked the high ball for a long, long time.
- 5:38Like it was probably, you know, Roy Gart in particular kicked very well, but it was probably, we went to the air more than we'd gone to the air for a long time and successfully.
- 5:49Yeah, I think it's the first time in a long time that you won that aerial battle.
- 5:54I mean, Australia came out against South Africa.
- 5:56That's how they beat South Africa is winning the aerial battle.
- 5:59And that's something New Zealand struggled with in South Africa.
- 6:03But they were just outstanding.
- 6:04And again, I mean, he's playing fantastic directly, Jordy Barrett.
- 6:09A lot of the time it was actually him chasing those kicks.
- 6:12Remember we talked about it in South Africa where the guy's falling back.
- 6:16So you have to come from the inside now.
- 6:18And I mean, Jordy Barrett was just outstanding.
- 6:20Not just in an aerial battle and everything he did in the game.
- 6:24I think there's a couple of little sort of small things that I want to mention.
- 6:29Like we were dominating and so we had the scrums because of their mistakes and
- 6:36And we were kicking, whereas in South Africa it was the other way around.
- 6:40So receiving that high ball is really hard.
- 6:44Attacking it is a lot easier.
- 6:46I think New Zealand improved on both sides of that.
- 6:50But I just think when you're dominating a wee bit with possession like we were, it's a lot easier for that kick.
- 6:55But I think the thing I liked about it, about our kicking game, was actually winning the field pitch.
- 7:01position stuff.
- 7:02So the kicks were smart, especially from Roy guard and just continued to put, you know, Australia under pressure.
- 7:09The trouble with Australia, they're making those little errors, which means they're always under the pump.
- 7:13You know, we're getting it.
- 7:14We're bashing them back down the field.
- 7:16They put a good sequence together, show some real nice stuff on defense, make a mistake.
- 7:21We'd get it back.
- 7:22and they're back under the pump.
- 7:24So I think one of the hardest things when you play South Africa is that constant pressure where you're defending, you're defending, you're defending and you need to get out of your half and win some field position.
- 7:35So I think the kicking game was way better and I think it was way better because we're also on attack a lot of the times and dominating.
- 7:44But JK, a lot of, you know, not a pundit like you because you've got such respect for Victor and his South African friends, but a lot of Kiwis have been critical of the South Africans for kicking the ball away all the time and just, oh, it's so boring.
- 7:56They just kick the ball up in the air and then they catch it.
- 8:00It's now a vital part of every team's make-up.
- 8:04I mean, the kicking game has always been a vital part.
- 8:06I think the introduction of the 28 where, you know, I think the South African side have perfected it, they're really accurate at it, they've got great ball people running onto it.
- 8:17But I think the difference is that long kicking and field position has...
- 8:21And so if you look at the possession stats, probably in the first test in South Africa, the South Africans had like the possession and then that last 20 minutes we sort of exploded and went down.
- 8:33But they probably won the possession stakes and we were making little errors, which then gave the South Africans the ball back in a position to do those dominant kicks.
- 8:40If you look at our game on the weekend, it was like...
- 8:43a reversed role play.
- 8:45So South Africa were making the mistakes and then we had those dominant kicks where you could kick the high ball and like Geordie had an amazing game once again, but he was attacking it, you know?
- 8:56And I think the accuracy of the Australian kicks weren't as good as when they played South Africa.
- 9:04And if you don't get the accuracy of that 28 kick and you give the opposition the ability to catch it,
- 9:11and then get smacked.
- 9:12You know, it's a whole different game.
- 9:14Whereas in South Africa, and Australia versus South Africa, they were competing for the ball.
- 9:19So the defensive side is always under the pump.
- 9:22You know, the thing is, we can say what we want.
- 9:25I mean, if you look at the test matches, 80% of the time, the team that kick the ball the most win the games.
- 9:35And that's just part of the game.
- 9:37But it's about how you kick, how clever you kick, do you get it back, do you win it?
- 9:42And I think for me, the All Blacks this weekend, I think the balance was there.
- 9:47There was a lot of the time where they played out of their own half as well.
- 9:50And when it slowed down, then they did the kick.
- 9:53So all the options were on the whole time.
- 9:55So I think the balance that New Zealand had this weekend was really good.
- 10:02looking at playing when it was on, and then when the ball slowed down, they went to there, won it back, and then they had another opportunity to get their backs going.
- 10:11Victor, you said you wanted to see the All Black forwards smash Australia, basically, at scrum time, you know, and set piece, et cetera.
- 10:18Did you see that?
- 10:20I think the New Zealand forwards were really good.
- 10:23We've mentioned Scott Barrett already.
- 10:27For me, I know you haven't asked this, but my Ram hand-to-hand career man of the game who performed under pressure was Tupu Fahey.
- 10:39Normally I'm not a big fan.
- 10:42I don't like him.
- 10:44He likes to get in the faces of the boys and sometimes he irritates me.
- 10:50Yeah, your audio is breaking up.
- 10:52I think your internet connection's not great where you are.
- 10:55So, JK, in terms of your RAM hand-hand couriers person that delivered,
- 11:01Who would that have been in this test match?
- 11:04Can I have two?
- 11:04Because Victor's not here.
- 11:06So I'll have his, eh?
- 11:08So I'll have two.
- 11:09Well, Victor would pick the lock.
- 11:11So my first pick would be Scott Barrett coming back from injury, like playing, what did he play, 70-odd minutes or whatever it was, like incredible.
- 11:21I love that he actually didn't have the right boots on as well.
- 11:25Did you see that?
- 11:26He had the wrong boots on, which I thought was fantastic.
- 11:28I would have liked it even better if they were black, white boots on a lot, what's going on.
- 11:33Yeah, I think they were grey.
- 11:34I don't think they were white.
- 11:35So, yeah, he just didn't get issue.
- 11:38But really, Geordie was outstanding, his brother.
- 11:43You know, I thought Geordie, you know, ram hand-to-hand delivered, like absolutely delivered, right?
- 11:52Physical on defence, up catching that high ball, right?
- 11:56So, you know, that for me would be mine.
- 11:59And I've given Victor Scott Barrett.
- 12:02So there we go.
- 12:02Because Victor's left us to go and do some work.
- 12:06So, this week, my Ram hand-to-hand career player that performed under pressure.
- 12:14And there was a lot of them.
- 12:16Well done to Scott Barrett coming back after a long layoff.
- 12:19Damien McKenzie slotting in to that number 10 jersey.
- 12:24Really playing well.
- 12:27The man for me Tupou Fahey What a guy I've been a critic of him Not seeing as a loose forward Maybe more in that second row But I mean he was under pressure From a guy like Shannon Frizzell that came back But he stood up I mean he carried hard, his work rate was high Fantastic in Defence and then We all know his line-out abilities So Tupou Fahey, well done
- 12:54Humair Ram hand-to-hand career player that performed under Kresha.
- 12:59I just want to you know we were worried we lost Ruben Love for the season so we're going to go Richie Moanga.
- 13:07Richie Moanga is out through injury you know fortunately we've got some depth there.
- 13:11Damien McKenzie are we happy with him at 10?
- 13:14Yeah, I love Damien when he plays that really good lateral game with guys coming off him, more like a league standoff.
- 13:26I think that's his real game.
- 13:28And I think when people try and turn him into a more traditional 10, he doesn't shine like he does.
- 13:36So, you know, that lateral game where he accelerates and people are cutting so that the defence has to make decisions,
- 13:44when he plays in that role.
- 13:47So, yeah, I was really, really happy.
- 13:49I thought they would have left him at fullback and played Bowdoin, but I think it was great to see Bowdoin back out there, and I think it was a wise choice to put Damien at 10.
- 14:01I was just going to say, what was interesting about Bowdoin, JK, was when you were watching the game live, like we were,
- 14:09Just the amount of talking he was doing, the amount of just, you know, particularly early on when it was close, you know, just that old head at fullback coming in and talking to the, you know, pulling the backs together and, you know, just having that really experienced leader there who's been through so much, I thought was, you know, really added some value.
- 14:30Oh, mate, and, you know, I think he's just a legend of our game.
- 14:35You know, he's still here.
- 14:37You know, he hasn't gone overseas.
- 14:38He's had a couple of financial sabbaticals, which is great.
- 14:41But, you know, he's here.
- 14:43He's on his 150th game this week.
- 14:45That was his 149th game.
- 14:47And, look, he's been through...
- 14:49He's been through some adversity.
- 14:51He hasn't been picked.
- 14:52He didn't get picked on the trip to South Africa.
- 14:56It's been really hard for him.
- 14:57He's gone from probably 140-odd test matches as the man to the last nine sort of not.
- 15:07And here he is giving 100%.
- 15:09I'm here for the team.
- 15:10I'll play wherever you want me to play.
- 15:13And I just think that takes someone like him into real legend status because it's pretty easy to spit the dummy and so I've been the number one for, you know, when did he come on the scene?
- 15:242012 or something.
- 15:26So I just think, you know, how good.
- 15:28And he's playing a role and that role will help us win the World Cup coming on or, you know.
- 15:34I know you're going to say I spat the dummy at that age, Sid.
- 15:38No, I was just going to say what you did, but I was just saying how relaxing it is just doing the show now that Victor's internet crapped out.
- 15:46Oh, we just know that we're not going to get assaulted or bashed over the head or, you know.
- 15:51I know.
- 15:52It's good.
- 15:53I know.
- 15:53It's quite relaxing, isn't it?
- 15:55Yeah.
- 15:56Look, I didn't, you know, he did mention Bucky's Botha and we did understand, you know, that they call it, what we call a ute, they call it Bucky's.
- 16:06which I knew, but Victor didn't know.
- 16:10So I just want to remind you, you've got to go to the website ram.co.za ram.co.za backslash competition, and you can go and win, and I'll read it out.
- 16:23It's an Isuzu D-Max 3.0 DDI V-Cross worth 790,000 rand.
- 16:29So make sure you get on the website ram.co.za
- 16:34backslash competition, follow the instructions.
- 16:37Basically you just have to register and get in to win.
- 16:40That's the sort of thing that we do for our rivals, viewers and listeners.
- 16:45We give them a buckies.
- 16:47And from Isuzu, of course,
- 16:52Now that Victor knows what one is, he might be entering.
- 16:54And so just getting back to the test match.
- 16:59I should probably – we should probably give your sunglasses to the winner as well, should we?
- 17:03The ones that I haven't got for you yet.
- 17:04No, no, I want those glasses.
- 17:07Okay.
- 17:07I just think I'll be able to pull them off a little bit better than you.
- 17:10I'm probably a bit better looking.
- 17:11Yeah.
- 17:14So where to from here, JK?
- 17:16I mean, you're passionate all black.
- 17:20How do we go into this next test match?
- 17:21You know, we've just put 50 on them.
- 17:23You know, it's hard not to get complacent when you just put 50 on a side.
- 17:29I think the biggest challenge will be, do they stay with the same team or do they do a little bit of rotation, not a lot, to keep that energy and that little bit of edge?
- 17:42You know, I'm sort of a little bit torn.
- 17:45You know, I'm a little bit old school around the selection, but I think...
- 17:51possibly changing a couple.
- 17:52There's been a couple of injuries.
- 17:54So I see Duplicy Carifi has come in, and he's had a little bit of a difficult season after making the All Blacks last year.
- 18:04So I don't think Duplicy will start, but do you change up a couple of the starters
- 18:12Maybe change the bench to starters and just go, you know, that will give us a little bit of edge, enough players to change that you're not too worried about it.
- 18:20But, you know, maybe give Rico a start, you know, maybe change a lock around.
- 18:27maybe, you know, put start Frizzell.
- 18:30So you get that edge because I think complacency is an issue.
- 18:34It shouldn't be, but I think, you know, we're talking 1% complacency at this level is probably 10 points.
- 18:40So, you know, that's a choice that Dave might make, but we'll see, you know, what he thinks.
- 18:49He might think that the players can get up and do it again, you know.
- 18:53You know, I probably tend to disagree because I think, you know, you mentioned before about South Africa, just that they are much closer to the finished article because that team's been together for a long time.
- 19:06And I think, you know, after losing three against South Africa, just this team needs some momentum.
- 19:13You know, we want to stack some wins together and we want to build some combinations.
- 19:19And I think for me personally,
- 19:22I think the less tinkering, the better.
- 19:24You know, we're starting to build these combinations.
- 19:27You've got Tupaya and Geordie Barrett building a really nice combination.
- 19:31You know, we're starting to, you know, each week with different loose forwards, but you've got Lakai, you've got Satiti, you know.
- 19:39You know, you've got Tupaya building a combination, you know.
- 19:42So I think those combinations are really important and I think it's really important that they get some continuity to continue to grow.
- 19:50Yeah, I don't disagree with it, but I'm actually talking about swapping the bench in and the bench out, not the extended squad.
- 20:02Right.
- 20:02So I don't – like you and I are a little bit old school, right?
- 20:05We sort of think about that sort of stuff.
- 20:07But I just don't think with injuries now today, you've got a 23-man squad.
- 20:12You know what –
- 20:13We've all seen, you know, Russie do that, but maybe he went a bit too far against the Australians, right?
- 20:21So all I'm saying this week is just swap the bench in and out maybe, you know.
- 20:26You know what you do?
- 20:27You always say, I don't disagree, but, and then you disagree.
- 20:32But.
- 20:33Yeah, that's nice.
- 20:36That's a half disagree because I understand what you're saying, actually.
- 20:39And I just think that now it is a 23-man squad.
- 20:44And like I said before, I think, you know, the Australians for 40 minutes were pretty good.
- 20:49You know, they went in not much behind at halftime and then we came out, you know, started pretty well, but then our bench came on and I thought was way better than their bench, you know.
- 21:02Mm-hmm.
- 21:03They're actually not a bad side, obviously, beating South Africa the week earlier.
- 21:07And they're playing at home and they're hurting.
- 21:10So, you know, they are going to get better.
- 21:12I mean, what was your clip-tripped moment of the match?
- 21:18What was the moment that, you know, and I'm saying clip-tripped moment of the match while I'm imagining Victor with his dodgy internet connection, he's just given up and he's just poured himself a Clippies and Coke double, stirring with his fingers.
- 21:31And he's like not even thinking of us.
- 21:32But what was your clip drift moment of the match?
- 21:38It was a tackle.
- 21:39And this is weird, right?
- 21:40And no one will probably remember it.
- 21:42But it was late in the game.
- 21:44And I saw about four tackles in a row.
- 21:49that were quite brutal.
- 21:51And then I saw Frizzell accelerate to just smack someone.
- 21:57And I thought, wow.
- 21:59And I thought about you asking me for a moment and I wondered whether it would be something that I could talk about because normally I'm talking about tries.
- 22:07But it was just this moment where it felt, you know, and we always talk about a Jerome Kaino moment.
- 22:14But I think...
- 22:16Palaesilo Tossi smacked someone, and then Amua smacked someone, and then Frazell accelerated and then smacked someone, and I think Jordy made it.
- 22:26It was like, wow, they were coming forward, and it was just like you could feel.
- 22:30And then I think it ended up in the Aussies throwing that ball and Will Jordan scored, but it came from all this amazing defensive pressure.
- 22:39So...
- 22:40That was my clip drift moment because I think this team's really, really good.
- 22:47What do we need to grow?
- 22:48That little bit of mongrel, that little bit of X factor, that little bit of wool.
- 22:52Don't know if I want to run in that dark place.
- 22:55And I saw it in sort of four or five of them.
- 22:59You know, the same for me because I can get a moment now because Victor's drinking his clippies and Coke.
- 23:06Mine was very similar, was when Geordie took that high ball and it was a great kick, just great competing for the ball and dominated that moment.
- 23:21And you could see, a bit like your tackles, you could see it lifting the rest of the team
- 23:26And not only did he take the high ball, but he just charged on through and showed some physicality and determination.
- 23:34And again, I just think those are the moments, those are the Clippy's moment that really lift aside.
- 23:42So my clip drift moment.
- 23:46I need to give something to the Australians.
- 23:50So that first try from the line out, went out the back, thought the...
- 23:58play was done, all of a sudden Donaldson just with a little flick up went into the gap, first try for the Australians, I thought, why don't, here's the game, this is going to be game on, unfortunately I couldn't keep going, and New Zealand were just too strong, New Zealand were outstanding, so to New Zealand well done, but my clip drift moment of a match, go to Australia for the first outstanding try.
- 24:24Do you think you've seen improvement from this side from South Africa?
- 24:29I think absolutely improvement.
- 24:31I think not having the pressure of a South African defence in their face, particularly with 60,000, 80,000 screaming South Africans firing them up, just gave us that
- 24:480.3 of a second time to just, you know, we're still developing a game.
- 24:53We're still developing combinations.
- 24:55I think we needed that.
- 24:56And I thought some of the attack was amazing, you know, and I think the Wallabies made like 220 tackles and we made 100, you know, 120.
- 25:07So I think, yeah, lots of improvement as the combinations and the understanding of the game plan got better and,
- 25:16And also, you know, the Australian Scrum is not a bad Scrum because they did well against South Africans.
- 25:24But we managed to get our Scrum operating better.
- 25:28Line-up was a bit dodgy early on, but then we sorted that out.
- 25:32So, yeah, I thought I can see some improvement.
- 25:34But there's still room for more improvement.
- 25:37No, totally.
- 25:38Yeah, I think they'll go away.
- 25:40I think the line-outs would be something that they'd go, you know, if we're against South Africa and we lost three line-outs in the first 15 minutes, we'd be in trouble.
- 25:48So I think that'll be a work on for them.
- 25:52Isn't it interesting, just what you just said, Ben?
- 25:55Everything we do in rugby is...
- 26:00gauged on how would that go against South Africa?
- 26:03You know what I mean?
- 26:04It's sort of like – Well, we just lost a series of the best in the world.
- 26:07Yeah.
- 26:08We just lost a series of the best in the world.
- 26:09So they're setting the standard, right?
- 26:12And we're not used to that and we don't like it, but we've got to be humble and go that's the case.
- 26:17So, you know, you've got to – and it's hard.
- 26:21It's hard when you're number one because everyone's chasing you, you know?
- 26:26But for me, it's just a reality that you've got to go, okay, what do we need to do?
- 26:34All right, well, what's your prediction for this weekend?
- 26:42I think we'll still beat Australia.
- 26:44I think we'll beat them convincingly, which for me is from 10 to 15 points.
- 26:52Right.
- 26:54Right.
- 26:55Yeah, I think the same.
- 26:56I think it will probably be – I'm going 15 to 20.
- 27:01Yeah, okay.
- 27:02I think same thing that will be – early will be pretty tight in that last 20 minutes, I think, is that where we'll make the difference.
- 27:10You know what's the best thing before I wrap up?
- 27:13We haven't talked about the referee.
- 27:15How good is that?
- 27:16Well done, ref.
- 27:16I thought the referee was good, mate.
- 27:18I thought the referee was good.
- 27:21Yeah, so did I, but Australia did.
- 27:22Yeah, no, I thought he was good.
- 27:24Yeah.
- 27:25All right, well, that is a great... J.K. and I are happy.
- 27:30The All Blacks put 50 on Australia.
- 27:33They're back...
- 27:34back at number one in the world, is that right?
- 27:36I don't know.
- 27:37I was just trying to have Victor on.
- 27:39I don't know.
- 27:39You can take it.
- 27:40JK says that the All Blacks are the number one team in the world at the moment.
- 27:44Thank you for staying with us on another episode of Rugby Rivals brought to you by Ram Hand to Hand Careers.
