Speaker 3: Nicholson in charge of things today. Let me bring out
2:39
Speaker 3: a good friend, Margaret O'Neil from the United Way. Welcome, Welcome,
2:43
Speaker 3: Welcome him, Dave.
2:44
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me in. Gosh, the new studio looks fabulous.
2:47
Speaker 3: It's almost paid for, well it is.
2:50
Speaker 5: It looks great and you look great in it.
2:51
Speaker 6: So thanks for having you.
2:52
Speaker 3: Thank you, thank you, thank you very much. All right,
2:54
Speaker 3: So why are you here today?
2:56
Speaker 5: Well because we're, you know, just mere weeks away from
2:59
Speaker 5: the Great Rubber Duck Race and we have a few
3:01
Speaker 5: ducks left to sell and we don't want you to
3:03
Speaker 5: be that person, you know, who waited till the last
3:05
Speaker 5: minute and we're sold out. So thanks for letting us
3:07
Speaker 5: come by and share that it's not too late to
3:10
Speaker 5: get your duck, and we have some great prizes. First
3:12
Speaker 5: place is four thousand dollars.
3:13
Speaker 3: You could use that right so absolutely.
3:15
Speaker 5: And a five dollars investment to get four thousand. Second
3:18
Speaker 5: place is great tickets to see Brandon or sorry Luke
3:21
Speaker 5: Bryan at the Civic Center and a night at the Marriott.
3:24
Speaker 5: You can get Brandon Lake tickets. You can get wu tickets,
3:27
Speaker 5: Marshall tickets. We have ten great prizes. Even the last
3:30
Speaker 5: duck number ten gets a flock in next year's race.
3:34
Speaker 5: And so five dollars text duck Race all one word
3:38
Speaker 5: to five one five five five. That easy takes you
3:40
Speaker 5: right to the site. Visit us on Facebook. You can
3:42
Speaker 5: get a list of those prizes if you want to
3:44
Speaker 5: double check or always always welcome at the website.
3:47
Speaker 3: Give us the history of this duck race.
3:50
Speaker 5: The best you know it, well so before my time. Okay,
3:53
Speaker 5: that's the best I know it. It was part of
3:55
Speaker 5: the regatta back in the day. The Great Rubber Duck
3:58
Speaker 5: Race comes with lots of nos algia. We hear from
4:01
Speaker 5: people all the time. I can remember my mom bringing me.
4:03
Speaker 5: There are pictures of the duck grace years ago. Always
4:07
Speaker 5: been a part of the United Way work, I think,
4:09
Speaker 5: And so when the regatta stopped, I think the Duck
4:11
Speaker 5: Race also kind of took a hiatus. And you know,
4:15
Speaker 5: we're really grateful. West Virginia. American Water reached out to
4:17
Speaker 5: us actually the year of COVID and said, you know,
4:21
Speaker 5: fundraising's tough, you can't see people, you can't be together.
4:24
Speaker 5: How you feel about bringing the duck Race back? And
4:26
Speaker 5: it was again before my time, so I'm like, I
4:29
Speaker 5: don't know, how do I feel about that? And what
4:31
Speaker 5: would that look like? And so they kindly got us started,
4:34
Speaker 5: did that a couple of years around Labor Day, and
4:36
Speaker 5: when the regatta came back thanks to the mayor and others,
4:38
Speaker 5: they asked if we wanted to return to that position.
4:41
Speaker 5: So now it's July, the sixth part of the regd
4:43
Speaker 5: It's going to be Sunday, ten thousand ducks off the
4:46
Speaker 5: South Side Bridge, not real ducks, rubber ducks.
4:49
Speaker 3: Important distinction.
4:50
Speaker 5: Well, you know, some people go, I know how you
4:52
Speaker 5: get all those little ducks back And I'm like, well,
4:55
Speaker 5: we have this market, you know, this big net and boom,
4:57
Speaker 5: and we keep them contained in their rubber.
5:00
Speaker 3: So it harkens back to the famous wkrps the turkey
5:04
Speaker 3: drop as God as my witness off the turkeys could fly,
5:07
Speaker 3: so it hearkets back to that. But no, these are
5:08
Speaker 3: not real ducks here.
5:09
Speaker 5: Every duck that goes in comes out. We promise to
5:11
Speaker 5: all our friends are river lovers. We don't leave this
5:14
Speaker 5: stray duck out there to do anything. And you know,
5:16
Speaker 5: it's a good time. Doesn't take very long. People come
5:18
Speaker 5: and sit at the levee and watch the race, and
5:22
Speaker 5: many times the prize winners are there. We announce them
5:24
Speaker 5: right away. And it's a great way to give back.
5:26
Speaker 7: You know.
5:26
Speaker 5: We strive at the United Way to find a level
5:29
Speaker 5: for anybody to donate, to contribute to the community and
5:32
Speaker 5: know they're giving back. And so five dollars for a
5:35
Speaker 5: duck and a chance at four thousand Kim, we're.
5:37
Speaker 3: Talking with Margaret O'Neill from the Unighted Way of Central
5:40
Speaker 3: West Virginia. But Dave Alan Show and five Eddielive is
5:42
Speaker 3: brought to you part by Meeks Reeltory Group. Looking for
5:44
Speaker 3: that experience you can trust. Rich the realtor meets one

5:49
Speaker 3: residential real estate for expert guidance and proven results. Contact

6:02
Speaker 3: Group dot com. Let's talk about the work of the
6:04
Speaker 3: United Way Central West Virginia and uh, you know, unfortunately
6:08
Speaker 3: people only think of you guys. Some people do in
6:11
Speaker 3: times of tragedy. And we saw, you know, within right now,
6:14
Speaker 3: the devastation up in Ohio County and in Marion County
6:17
Speaker 3: they named there was an eighth person that was that
6:21
Speaker 3: was I don't think they've identified the person yet, but
6:23
Speaker 3: there was an eighth body that the governor announced yesterday.
6:27
Speaker 3: You guys do a lot when there's not a disaster,
6:30
Speaker 3: but you really shine when there is a disaster.
6:33
Speaker 5: You know, there's been thousands of two to one one
6:35
Speaker 5: calls to the unit away in the Wheeling community and
6:38
Speaker 5: thousands of calls to the unit away in Fairmont, Marion
6:42
Speaker 5: County community. They're there to supply needs for you. The
6:45
Speaker 5: executive director, Stacy Stevens and Wheeling was mucking out somebody's
6:49
Speaker 5: basement because it was a little older lady who reached
6:51
Speaker 5: out and said, I don't have anybody, you know, the
6:53
Speaker 5: United Way. So every day somebody has a tragedy, right,
6:56
Speaker 5: and so you're right, we're out there trying to make
6:58
Speaker 5: sure people are fed and kids have use and their
7:01
Speaker 5: shelters open when people need them and all the things
7:03
Speaker 5: on a daily basis. But when there's a disaster, people
7:06
Speaker 5: trust us. We're very grateful for that. We try to
7:09
Speaker 5: be the absolute most transparent, best stewards of people's donations.
7:13
Speaker 5: There's no admin fee taking off of those contributions through disaster,
7:17
Speaker 5: and so people are trusting and they understand that it's
7:19
Speaker 5: going to stay right there. It's going to go back
7:21
Speaker 5: to you know, by hvac unit or make sure that
7:23
Speaker 5: somebody's hole or that some senior has heat when it
7:26
Speaker 5: gets closer to wintertime or one hundred degrees next week,
7:29
Speaker 5: that there's a way for them to stay cool. And
7:31
Speaker 5: so we're you know, we're just blessed that we don't
7:33
Speaker 5: just have the unit aways, we have two one one
7:35
Speaker 5: and there's a direct connection for people to reach out
7:37
Speaker 5: and get help.
7:38
Speaker 3: Well explain the whole two one one thing. And we've
7:40
Speaker 3: been on the show talking about this in the past,
7:41
Speaker 3: but I know yesterday when we were talking with some
7:44
Speaker 3: folks opened the Wheeling air maybe was on yesterday's Metro
7:47
Speaker 3: News midday they were they kept hitting that two to
7:49
Speaker 3: one one. Explain how that was.
7:50
Speaker 5: So it's West Virginia's information referral number. It's actually two
7:53
Speaker 5: on one across the country. If you're traveling, you can
7:56
Speaker 5: do the same. Most of the time, our calls relate
7:58
Speaker 5: to people in need of a meet at, assistance for
8:00
Speaker 5: a rent, or mutility assistance, or food insecurity, Where can
8:05
Speaker 5: I find a daycare? Where can I find a health department?
8:08
Speaker 5: All the things that are immediate needs to those people.
8:11
Speaker 5: But in disaster, we keep a running list it's real time,
8:14
Speaker 5: sometimes just on a legal pad of every shelter that's open,
8:18
Speaker 5: where you can get supplies, where you can get volunteers,
8:20
Speaker 5: links to the Red Cross, links to the other places
8:23
Speaker 5: where people can sign up to get help. So you
8:25
Speaker 5: can call to on one anytime, but in disaster it's
8:28
Speaker 5: a super connector to get your real time help and
8:31
Speaker 5: real time care.
8:32
Speaker 3: And let's talk about this heat wave that we're expecting.
8:34
Speaker 3: Because we've had severe weather. It seems like for weeks
8:37
Speaker 3: it's one storm after another. It looks like after today
8:40
Speaker 3: that that's going to go away, but in its wake
8:42
Speaker 3: is going to be the heat. And we're expecting I
8:45
Speaker 3: mean like he'd end of seas as they say, like
8:49
Speaker 3: about one hundred. Next week, the real time temperature is
8:52
Speaker 3: going to be in the nineties, I mean ninety seven
8:54
Speaker 3: ninety eight, the warmest temperatures we've had in some time.
8:57
Speaker 3: What do you folks got planned for next week?
8:58
Speaker 5: So we already had a conversation on Tuesday. The City
9:02
Speaker 5: of Charleston's care team is fabulous to be able to
9:04
Speaker 5: go out and do hands on care hot or cold.
9:08
Speaker 5: Our job is sometimes to help supply water and popsicles,
9:11
Speaker 5: and so we made sure they've got plenty of those
9:12
Speaker 5: on hand. You'll should get a press release probably today
9:15
Speaker 5: or tomorrow that lets people know what places they can
9:18
Speaker 5: go to be safe and be cool. And you know,
9:20
Speaker 5: I just caution people that we always think of those
9:23
Speaker 5: are who are unhoused and unsheltered, and we really do
9:26
Speaker 5: worry about those folks when it's you know, you're sleeping
9:28
Speaker 5: on pavement and it's one hundred degrees and all the things,
9:31
Speaker 5: But do check on your senior neighbors. Heat like that
9:33
Speaker 5: is extremely difficult on people who have any kind of
9:36
Speaker 5: breathing problems if the power to go out and they
9:38
Speaker 5: need oxygen. We just always want to make sure people
9:41
Speaker 5: are again. You're connected, you can call to on one
9:43
Speaker 5: if the power goes out. We can share where there
9:45
Speaker 5: are shelters, medical shelters where you can go and make
9:47
Speaker 5: sure your oxygen gets plugged in. But you know, we're
9:50
Speaker 5: already trying to make sure.
9:52
Speaker 3: It's really hard.
9:52
Speaker 5: I mean it's I'm not gonna lie. It's hard to
9:55
Speaker 5: help people when it's just really hot outside and you
9:57
Speaker 5: don't know where to go. But there'll be places open
9:59
Speaker 5: and they'll be out there reaching out with cold water
10:01
Speaker 5: and cold or frozen popsicles and anything we can do
10:04
Speaker 5: to kind of cool people off.
10:06
Speaker 3: Let's get back to the rubber ducks. Talk about your
10:09
Speaker 3: T shirt. I got a nice little T shirt here.
10:12
Speaker 3: We're not on television, Intel have a face for radio.
10:16
Speaker 3: But yeah, i'll hold it up to well.
10:19
Speaker 5: You can see it on our Facebook page. Beautifully modeled
10:22
Speaker 5: by a Dell ball. It's a one of a kind
10:24
Speaker 5: design by JPO and I think you know JP's with
10:26
Speaker 5: City National Bank, but he reached out to us and said,
10:29
Speaker 5: how about I designed a duck shirt, so it truly
10:32
Speaker 5: is a one of a kind if you're a collector,
10:33
Speaker 5: and again if you're that nostalgia that bought duck t
10:36
Speaker 5: shirts years ago, with the T shirts twenty five dollars
10:39
Speaker 5: and with the T shirt, that gets you one duck
10:41
Speaker 5: entered into the Duck race. So you get your collector
10:44
Speaker 5: T shirt and a duck in the race for twenty
10:46
Speaker 5: five dollars. You can come by the office anytime corner
10:48
Speaker 5: of Court and Smith Street here in Charleston. We'll happily
10:51
Speaker 5: take care of you. Or you can just go to
10:52
Speaker 5: the Facebook page again, click on it, pay for it,
10:55
Speaker 5: and we'll send it Tea in the mill.
10:56
Speaker 3: All right, sounds like a lot of fun. It always is.
10:58
Speaker 5: It's going to be great. Don't forget us at the
11:00
Speaker 5: God it will be selling all four days prior to
11:02
Speaker 5: the race on Sunday. Our thanks to the city for
11:05
Speaker 5: letting us be a part of it, and grateful to
11:06
Speaker 5: you for letting us share the message.
11:08
Speaker 3: Absolutely and well if we need to have you back
11:10
Speaker 3: on again before we got back yeah, all right, all right, okay,
11:14
Speaker 3: hold on, got a text for you. Do you all
11:17
Speaker 3: help with pets as well? Because some facilities don't allow pets,
11:20
Speaker 3: so if.
11:21
Speaker 5: There's a shelter, pets are allowed. We've had numbers of
11:25
Speaker 5: pets at our warming centers that we do in the
11:27
Speaker 5: winter when it gets really really cold, everything from snakes
11:30
Speaker 5: to rabbits and cats and dogs. There are can change.
11:33
Speaker 3: I miss rabbits and dogs right.
11:34
Speaker 5: There are ways that they must be safe and contained
11:37
Speaker 5: for our other guests. Those rarities don't happen very often,
11:40
Speaker 5: but cats and dogs are regular. If we if we
11:43
Speaker 5: as a united way, the question is do we help
11:44
Speaker 5: we support our humane society always. We've done food drives,
11:49
Speaker 5: you know, for not just people, but for animals. And
11:52
Speaker 5: again it's a great way to know that if you
11:54
Speaker 5: see it stray animal, please reach out to somebody because
11:57
Speaker 5: there are people in the city that can help with that.
11:59
Speaker 3: All right, Margot, I appreciate you being here. Thanks. Lof
12:01
Speaker 3: what we'll do is we'll hang out with me during
12:03
Speaker 3: the break. We'll get a picture of us with our

Speaker 3: how about you? I'm doing fine. Republicans out of the

15:17
Speaker 3: I wanted to give you an opportunity as I have
15:19
Speaker 3: been with a lot of folks because I ran into
15:21
Speaker 3: you Monday at the memorial for the late Doug Scaff
15:26
Speaker 3: and I thought I would give you an opportunity as
15:28
Speaker 3: well to weigh in on your friendship if you want
15:30
Speaker 3: with Doug Scaff, sure, Dave.
15:34
Speaker 11: Doug was a Doug was someone I've known for a
15:38
Speaker 11: long time before I was ever elected to the House.
15:41
Speaker 11: I met him in twenty twelve when I was twenty
15:44
Speaker 11: one years old and had just been elected to the
15:47
Speaker 11: Nitro City Council. He was on our Development Authority Board
15:51
Speaker 11: in Nitro. Of course owned a business in Nitro. Doug
15:56
Speaker 11: is someone who maintained so many different relationships all across
16:01
Speaker 11: the political spectrum, and he's someone who cannot be replaced.
16:08
Speaker 6: His influence in the in.
16:09
Speaker 11: Kannall County is was vast and I just think he
16:15
Speaker 11: leaves behind such a legacy of service, of devotion to
16:20
Speaker 11: his family, devotion to his community, someone who's whose contributions
16:27
Speaker 11: won't be forgotten.
16:28
Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely, what a turnout there Monday night. I mean,
16:31
Speaker 3: I told the folks on the air yesterday or I
16:34
Speaker 3: guess Tuesday delegate, I got there, you know, thinking, well,
16:38
Speaker 3: wrap up Metro News midday three do a little a
16:41
Speaker 3: few little post show things in the office. I head
16:43
Speaker 3: over there about three forty five, three fifty, get in,
16:46
Speaker 3: do pay my respects, and get out. When I got there,
16:51
Speaker 3: which was about three point fifty, walked in with a
16:54
Speaker 3: couple of friends of mine, and the line was already
16:57
Speaker 3: and then they hadn't even opened the doors yet, and
16:59
Speaker 3: it was pouring the rain. Of course, it cleared up
17:00
Speaker 3: a little bit later, but I think we finally got
17:02
Speaker 3: in around six fifteen or six thirty, you know, and
17:05
Speaker 3: it just goes to show and then they had the
17:07
Speaker 3: service and then it picked back up again afterwards. Talked
17:11
Speaker 3: to somebody that said they were there like like ten,
17:13
Speaker 3: I mean, Coach Huggins was their former senator. Mansion was there.
17:16
Speaker 3: And what I loved about it is when you looked
17:18
Speaker 3: around that crowd. Yeah, you saw a lot of elected officials,
17:21
Speaker 3: you saw people from the business community, but you also
17:23
Speaker 3: saw people that were normal people, not people like us.
17:28
Speaker 3: I mean, they were actually just normal everyday people that
17:31
Speaker 3: Doug may have, you know, may have waited on Doug
17:34
Speaker 3: at a restaurant, maybe somebody that you know worked with
17:36
Speaker 3: him twenty That just goes to show you what kind
17:39
Speaker 3: of what kind of guy with a legacy and an
17:41
Speaker 3: impact that doug'scaff made on people's lives.
17:43
Speaker 11: I've never seen anything like that memorial. I got there
17:48
Speaker 11: about four fifteen, and the line wasn't already in the
17:52
Speaker 11: parking lot. Yeah, and how appropriate for Doug though. Oh yeah,
17:57
Speaker 11: I mean someone who had so many relationships, as I mentioned,
18:02
Speaker 11: with so many different people. I mean, from people like
18:04
Speaker 11: us who are politically obsessed, to the common everyday person
18:08
Speaker 11: who just had some sort of casual interaction with them.
18:12
Speaker 11: I mean, like you said, the whole spectrum.
18:14
Speaker 3: Yes, everybody was there. It's nine twenty five. Vaccines are
18:18
Speaker 3: your best protections against severe disease from fluid COVID nineteen.
18:20
Speaker 3: If you're sixty five or older, risk less, do more
18:22
Speaker 3: with this season's vaccines. Get started. Vaccines not GOV paid
18:25
Speaker 3: for by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
18:27
Speaker 3: All right, Doug, uh Doug? Wow?
18:31
Speaker 6: Hey, I think Hey, I've been called worse.
18:33
Speaker 3: Andy Andy Shamil Delegate Shamblain. All right, you and waste management?
18:37
Speaker 3: What's up?
18:38
Speaker 6: Yeah, waste manage. We have a we have a relationship
18:42
Speaker 6: with each other.
18:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, all right, all right, so we talked about
18:45
Speaker 3: this a couple of days ago in the state wide show.
18:46
Speaker 3: But for those that you you know, that are in
18:48
Speaker 3: the area and you're actually their representative, what happened.
18:52
Speaker 11: Here, Yeah, back in March during the legislative session actually
18:57
Speaker 11: was still still occurring. I fouled a formal letter with
19:01
Speaker 11: the Public Service Commission, not fully even realizing exactly what
19:05
Speaker 11: they would do with it, simply because I had literally
19:10
Speaker 11: dozens and dozens and dozens of complaints from my constituents,
19:14
Speaker 11: specifically in the Cross Lanes area, regarding their garbage picked up.
19:20
Speaker 11: And you know, those complaints ranged from folks who had
19:23
Speaker 11: went almost a month without having their garbage picked up,
19:28
Speaker 11: to folks who had tried to contact waste Management through email,
19:35
Speaker 11: through their website, through you know, via phone, and they
19:38
Speaker 11: just weren't receiving much communication from them. So I filed
19:43
Speaker 11: a request with PSC for them to investigate to look
19:48
Speaker 11: into this, and basically the result was almost two hundred
19:54
Speaker 11: documented complaints from the public regarding the type of service
20:00
Speaker 11: they were being provided by Waste Management.
20:02
Speaker 3: And so these complaints, as you said, they kind of
20:06
Speaker 3: went from service not being one that should not being
20:09
Speaker 3: picked up, problems with billing, just a myriad of things.
20:12
Speaker 11: Right, right, and and to be fair to Waste Management,
20:16
Speaker 11: I mean, we did have severe winter weather that complicated
20:19
Speaker 11: there their service pickup.
20:21
Speaker 6: But you know, for customers to go.
20:24
Speaker 3: A month is unacceptable and it's a health hazard.
20:27
Speaker 11: It becomes a health absolutely, you know, it becomes a
20:29
Speaker 11: health hazard. And the Public Service Commission took this very seriously.
20:35
Speaker 11: And and you can go online and look at all
20:38
Speaker 11: the documentation that was generated from this inquiry and basically
20:43
Speaker 11: they came up with basically eight eight findings, eight recommendations
20:51
Speaker 11: for them to improve their service.
20:53
Speaker 3: And those were okay.
20:54
Speaker 11: So first, Waste Management has been ordered to do a
20:58
Speaker 11: yearly reminder for customers to update their contact information and
21:02
Speaker 11: their preferences. Second, file a template with the Commission outlining
21:07
Speaker 11: its plan of action in the event.
21:09
Speaker 6: Customers are missed.
21:11
Speaker 11: Third, establish a contingency pickup plan if Waste Management misses
21:18
Speaker 11: a route. Fourth, and I think this one is very significant.
21:24
Speaker 11: This is one of the points of contention. If you
21:26
Speaker 11: go and read the report, they've been ordered to implement
21:30
Speaker 11: a tracking system so that they can measure how many
21:34
Speaker 11: customers have been missed, because that's one of the real
21:38
Speaker 11: points of contention. Is the company says, well, you know,
21:40
Speaker 11: it wasn't as bad as what people are claiming, but
21:42
Speaker 11: yet they don't have any data, they don't have any
21:45
Speaker 11: evidence to either support Yeah.
21:47
Speaker 10: Right.
21:47
Speaker 11: And and fifth, which I think the company claims they
21:52
Speaker 11: were already doing, but they're not to subject any extra
21:56
Speaker 11: charges for missed pickups. And then sixth, issue pro rated
22:04
Speaker 11: credits to any customer who's missed more than twelve days
22:08
Speaker 11: of service. Seventh, and this is this may be the
22:13
Speaker 11: most significant finding. Immediately comply with PSC rules by placing
22:19
Speaker 11: a toll free number on their website that will allow
22:23
Speaker 11: customers to reach a live customer service representative. That's one
22:27
Speaker 11: of the biggest problems is communication.
22:29
Speaker 3: And that's not exclusive to this company. I mean that
22:32
Speaker 3: we saw it with the well, we saw it with
22:35
Speaker 3: the water crisis, but we also saw it just last
22:37
Speaker 3: year with the gas crisis. You know that, and that's
22:40
Speaker 3: something then you're in the legislature. We'll talk about that
22:42
Speaker 3: in the moment. That's something that the legislature, and it
22:44
Speaker 3: was bipartisan effort, you know, Republicans, Democrats getting together and
22:47
Speaker 3: say these these companies have got to have a way
22:51
Speaker 3: to reach people and for people to reach to reach them.
22:55
Speaker 11: Right, That's yeah, that's exactly right. I mean these companies,
23:00
Speaker 11: and I'm not beating up on waste Management. They provide
23:03
Speaker 11: an essential service. And it's as I mentioned the other day,
23:06
Speaker 11: it's like the old Merle Haggard song. You know you
23:09
Speaker 11: take me for granted. Yeah, you know, when when it's
23:12
Speaker 11: done well, people rarely notice or give credit, right, and
23:15
Speaker 11: when it's not done well, you know, it becomes a
23:17
Speaker 11: big issue. Yes, I mean, I'm not not just bashing
23:20
Speaker 11: waste Management. They're one of the largest waste haulers in
23:23
Speaker 11: the state and they provide an essential service. But people
23:27
Speaker 11: have to be able to communicate with them. And we
23:30
Speaker 11: have an aging older population in many parts of the state,
23:34
Speaker 11: and not everybody is is digital. Not everybody can send
23:39
Speaker 11: an email, not everyone can send an instant chat option
23:42
Speaker 11: on their website. So I mean, to me, the most
23:45
Speaker 11: significant area of improvement has to be providing this number
23:50
Speaker 11: with a live customer service representative.
23:52
Speaker 3: And again we're talking with Deli gets Andy Shama of
23:54
Speaker 3: The Dave Allen Show in five eighty Live brought to you,
23:56
Speaker 3: impired by Hustin's Pizza. Well, this month you can get

24:04
Speaker 3: for delivery, pickup, or dine in by going to Huston's
24:06
Speaker 3: Pizza dot com. What was the response from Waste Management?
24:10
Speaker 3: I mean, when you've had these discussions and they got
24:13
Speaker 3: these recommendations coming out of the Public Service Commission, what
24:17
Speaker 3: was it? What's the response been.
24:18
Speaker 6: They haven't had a they haven't had much of a
24:22
Speaker 6: public response.
24:23
Speaker 11: They've put out statements saying that they're going to work
24:26
Speaker 11: with the PSC. That's pretty much been their response. They're
24:30
Speaker 11: going to comply with what PSC has ordered them to.
24:33
Speaker 3: Have you had any you yourself as an individual, have
24:36
Speaker 3: you had any conversations with the company.
24:37
Speaker 11: Yes, I have had some informal conversations. Okay, all right,
24:41
Speaker 11: And when I've been given specific issues by my constituents,
24:45
Speaker 11: I've been able to get that information to them and
24:48
Speaker 11: they have fixed them.
24:49
Speaker 6: So I give them credit for that.
24:51
Speaker 3: All right, all right, let's move away from waste Management
24:54
Speaker 3: for a moment. Let's talk about the legislature. So wrapped
24:56
Speaker 3: up of course, session a couple of months ago, looking
24:59
Speaker 3: probably at a had a special session. We don't know
25:02
Speaker 3: when that's going to be, but I know and something
25:05
Speaker 3: because of your because of your daytime job, your real job,
25:08
Speaker 3: so to speak, that you're a very much interest to
25:10
Speaker 3: you and your constituents too, is pe I A. And
25:12
Speaker 3: we had a lot of issues there, as you know now.
25:15
Speaker 6: There's a lot of issues with p I A.
25:17
Speaker 11: And I'm afraid that that it lacks a clear solution.
25:23
Speaker 7: Uh.
25:24
Speaker 11: It is, of course a program that we proviought, a service,
25:27
Speaker 11: a program, a benefit that we provide our employees, and
25:30
Speaker 11: I think it's important that we find better ways to
25:33
Speaker 11: fund it, to supplement it.
25:35
Speaker 3: And of course the issue of foster care, you know,
25:37
Speaker 3: that's that's likely to be discussed. Well, now you guys
25:40
Speaker 3: have interims coming up right, correct, Yeah, interms next week, interms.
25:44
Speaker 3: And that's a stone stonewall. The stonewall. But you can't
25:47
Speaker 3: do a special session because the code says that special
25:49
Speaker 3: sessions have to be in the seat of government. So
25:51
Speaker 3: if they were they were in Charleston, you may be
25:53
Speaker 3: able to knock out, you know, two birds with one stone,
25:55
Speaker 3: but you can't do that because you can't do it
25:57
Speaker 3: here in Lewis County. You got to do it in Charleston,
26:00
Speaker 3: and we don't have an idea when that special session
26:02
Speaker 3: might be.
26:03
Speaker 11: No, no one has put out any formal statement.
26:06
Speaker 6: I keep hearing.
26:07
Speaker 11: Maybe the end of July.
26:08
Speaker 3: Maybe maybe yeah.
26:11
Speaker 11: And and you know, in terms of foster care, I do,
26:14
Speaker 11: I do really appreciate the steps that Governor Morsey's administration
26:17
Speaker 11: has taken with some of the reorganization efforts with DHS.
26:22
Speaker 11: It seems like to me that that the new leadership
26:25
Speaker 11: in that department's really interested in digging into the details
26:29
Speaker 11: of those problems and and sort of reorganizing. So so
26:32
Speaker 11: I think, you know, I'm optimistic about that aspect of
26:36
Speaker 11: the new administration.
26:37
Speaker 3: And I know that you can't get into specifics I
26:39
Speaker 3: would ever ask you to, but you are you are
26:41
Speaker 3: a teacher and being on the front lines. Forget about
26:45
Speaker 3: your role as a delegate. As a teacher, you have
26:48
Speaker 3: dealt with this in your classroom with foster kids, and
26:51
Speaker 3: it's something that I remember. And uh, you know, the
26:56
Speaker 3: delig channel and I have known each other for a
26:58
Speaker 3: long time, but I can remember when I was in
27:00
Speaker 3: my role with the Secretary of State's Office and we
27:02
Speaker 3: would go into schools and take pictures of what we
27:05
Speaker 3: did voter registers. How you and I met doing voter
27:07
Speaker 3: registration drives at Nitral High School. Uh And and I
27:10
Speaker 3: would go in and we would just like to get
27:12
Speaker 3: a picture. And this was something that was totally foreign
27:14
Speaker 3: to me. No matter what the school was. We had
27:17
Speaker 3: to have, you know, the instructor, somebody like you or
27:20
Speaker 3: or a counselor or something come and say, Okay, well,
27:22
Speaker 3: these kids can't be in the picture. And I'm thinking,
27:25
Speaker 3: why can't they be in the picture? And it's because
27:29
Speaker 3: so many of them were in foster care. And I
27:32
Speaker 3: mean at some of the schools, and I did this
27:34
Speaker 3: all over the state of West Virginia. Andy, it may
27:38
Speaker 3: be if you had you had a group of let's say,
27:41
Speaker 3: fifty kids, there might be like ten or fifteen of them.
27:44
Speaker 3: But we had to exclude from the from the photos,
27:46
Speaker 3: which we gladly did. But that was something that was
27:48
Speaker 3: totally need me. It's like, we have that many kids
27:50
Speaker 3: in foster care. You saw it. I mean you're an instructor,
27:53
Speaker 3: you see it every day in the classroom.
27:55
Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we definitely do. And you know one
27:58
Speaker 11: thing that I think so some adults who aren't who
28:02
Speaker 11: don't have children in school, at least having in recent years,
28:07
Speaker 11: don't fully appreciate. It's how different school is compared to
28:10
Speaker 11: the way it was when you know, when you were
28:12
Speaker 11: in school, even when I was in school. I mean,
28:15
Speaker 11: we have such a large number of students who are
28:18
Speaker 11: living in non traditional homes, foster care, homes, placement. I
28:24
Speaker 11: have had some kids who are living in group home before,
28:29
Speaker 11: and a large number who are living with their grandparents,
28:32
Speaker 11: even their great grandparents. Right, So, I mean it's such
28:35
Speaker 11: a different socioeconomic status and dynamic that the schools are
28:41
Speaker 11: dealing with now compared to what it was even ten
28:44
Speaker 11: or twenty years. Oh yeah, yeah, I mean it's a
28:47
Speaker 11: vastly different.
28:48
Speaker 3: It's it would be to the average person, as you said, Delegate,
28:51
Speaker 3: it doesen't have kids in school, or doesn't spend a
28:53
Speaker 3: lot of time around schools. In some ways, you wouldn't
28:56
Speaker 3: recognize it as far as what it is. And I
28:59
Speaker 3: know that there's a lot of hard working teachers and
29:01
Speaker 3: administrators that are doing everything they can. And it's not
29:05
Speaker 3: just about the book the book learning. I mean they're
29:07
Speaker 3: they're buying meals for kids, they're buying clothes for kids.
29:11
Speaker 11: And and and you know, the the challenging thing is UH.
29:15
Speaker 11: For example, I was I help UH my my my
29:19
Speaker 11: own school in Nintory High School, we set up a
29:21
Speaker 11: counseling program through a local company UH to provide mental
29:26
Speaker 11: health services for our students. And schools are are performing
29:30
Speaker 11: so many additional functions, as you alluded to, in addition
29:34
Speaker 11: to the academics. I mean, schools are becoming more like
29:37
Speaker 11: a one stop shop community center for the community because
29:41
Speaker 11: these kids have so many different and varied needs. So
29:46
Speaker 11: so it is, it's it's a changing landscape.
29:48
Speaker 3: It is, and hopefully we can get it back on
29:50
Speaker 3: the right track because it's as you said, it's changing.
29:54
Speaker 3: Went have a text here before you before I let
29:56
Speaker 3: you go. So is does delicate? Shamleck have info on
29:58
Speaker 3: the Cross Lanes road project.
30:00
Speaker 11: Actually have a meeting with d H this morning, and
30:04
Speaker 11: I hope to have some info on that. I can
30:08
Speaker 11: tell you this. The road project is moving forward, contrary
30:12
Speaker 11: to the rumors that are out there that funding's been
30:15
Speaker 11: pulled or there's some some some reason that is and
30:19
Speaker 11: it is going to move forward. We're still waiting on
30:22
Speaker 11: the utility companies to finish their infrastructure relocation. I mean
30:28
Speaker 11: that's been the hold up this entire time. We were
30:30
Speaker 11: hoping that we would be back in operation in April.
30:34
Speaker 11: That didn't happen, and here we are June's passing and
30:38
Speaker 11: still hasn't happened.
30:39
Speaker 6: It's very frustrating.
30:40
Speaker 3: All right, So what exactly where are we talking about this? Okay,
30:43
Speaker 3: a particular road project.
30:45
Speaker 11: We're talking about immediately after the cross Lanes exit in
30:51
Speaker 11: the Interstate, and the road project goes from the Interstate
30:56
Speaker 11: exit all the way to the stop light at Kroger's
30:59
Speaker 11: in front of end Andrew Jackson Middle School, so that
31:01
Speaker 11: whole area will eventually be four lanes.
31:05
Speaker 3: Okay through there. All right, but you said this, You
31:07
