- 0:02Speaker 1: From the twenty twenty three NFL Combine. This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up everybody, It's a very special edition episode one
- 0:12Speaker 1: I guess of Patriots Unfiltered at the Combine. It's Mike
- 0:15Speaker 1: do So, It's Evan Lazar, no Paul, no Fred, not
- 0:18Speaker 1: your usual PU crew, just us the nerds who love
- 0:21Speaker 1: the combine and are digging into the prospects. So day
- 0:24Speaker 1: one here today, this a little bit of a longer podcast,
- 0:26Speaker 1: so we can chat talk about the prospects of Let's
- 0:30Speaker 1: just start off at the top. I mean, I feel
- 0:32Speaker 1: like we got to talk about the big news of
- 0:33Speaker 1: the day with Jalen Carter, which is certainly going to
- 0:35Speaker 1: affect things for the Patriots at fourteenth. Overall, this has
- 0:38Speaker 1: a domino effect on the entire draft, and we talked
- 0:41Speaker 1: about it in our little debrief that we do as well.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But you look at the Patriots now at fourteen, how
- 0:47Speaker 1: does this shake up one through thirteen is going to
- 0:49Speaker 1: be something that we're probably going to talk about with
- 0:51Speaker 1: this story, as awful as what actually happened, is, there
- 0:55Speaker 1: is a football element to it. And if Jalen Carter
- 0:58Speaker 1: is now out of the first round, mix because of
- 1:00Speaker 1: this situation, then it has a trickle down effect on
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Patriots. That's just the reality. And I think if
- 1:05Speaker 1: you really look in the top five, a team like
- 1:08Speaker 1: the Chicago Bears picking number one overall, now Will Anderson,
- 1:11Speaker 1: you have to come away with Will Anderson, Like there's
- 1:14Speaker 1: no way if you're not going to draft a quarterback
- 1:17Speaker 1: and you're sticking with Justin Fields, then you have to
- 1:19Speaker 1: come away with Will Anderson. So now you're really talking
- 1:22Speaker 1: about three being the floor for Chicago. You can't go
- 1:26Speaker 1: down to four because now you're missing out on the
- 1:28Speaker 1: best non quarterback in the draft. So it's going to
- 1:30Speaker 1: be a very interesting change up to some of the
- 1:34Speaker 1: mock drafts and things like that. Now, if Jaylen Carter's
- 1:36Speaker 1: out of the picture, how does it shake up one
- 1:39Speaker 1: through five and then have a trickle down effect on
- 1:41Speaker 1: the rest of the draft. Yeah, it still felt to
- 1:43Speaker 1: me like there's going to be some kind of trickle
- 1:44Speaker 1: down effect even when he was in the mix, because
- 1:47Speaker 1: it's just I mean, we look at these groups today
- 1:49Speaker 1: and we can talk about, you know, how much of
- 1:51Speaker 1: the need is edge and you know, I know it's
- 1:53Speaker 1: it's a little bit nebulous how they play you look
- 1:55Speaker 1: at Matthew Judona is an outside linebacker, and then you
- 1:57Speaker 1: kind of look at teatrich Wise on the other side,
- 1:59Speaker 1: you know, when he's more of a and down guys
- 2:01Speaker 1: just how they play. Not the biggest need ouch Anthony Jennings.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We got pay Ronnie Perkins on the roster. Still, we
- 2:08Speaker 1: had to look that one up. Never gonna know for sure,
- 2:10Speaker 1: but it seems like they have pretty good depth. I
- 2:12Speaker 1: still find it intriguing just to look at these guys
- 2:16Speaker 1: because these are the playmakers. These are the guys on
- 2:18Speaker 1: defense that you have to game plan for. And you know,
- 2:21Speaker 1: maybe if there is a day late, day two, day
- 2:23Speaker 1: three kind of project guy that projects, well, maybe maybe
- 2:25Speaker 1: they do take a chance. But it doesn't seem like
- 2:27Speaker 1: the biggest need right now. This is a reality of
- 2:30Speaker 1: their situation where they have so many immediate holes on
- 2:34Speaker 1: the roster that these year too early needs are not
- 2:38Speaker 1: needs that they can prioritize anymore. At the top of
- 2:41Speaker 1: the draft. I think a few years ago and maybe
- 2:43Speaker 1: this unfortunately, being frank about it, I think once upon
- 2:47Speaker 1: a time they were very good at being out in
- 2:49Speaker 1: front of these types of situations, but now they almost
- 2:53Speaker 1: don't have that benefit because unfortunately they are in a
- 2:58Speaker 1: position where they have some immediate holes tackle receiver, corner,
- 3:02Speaker 1: outside corner. Certainly, I think come first before edge. Now,
- 3:06Speaker 1: next offseason, we have a real conversation about whether or
- 3:09Speaker 1: not they are going to pony up for josh Ucha,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and I think a lot of Ucha's numbers similar to
- 3:14Speaker 1: a guy like jac Jackson, for example, maybe the team
- 3:17Speaker 1: might view as a little bit inflated by June On
- 3:21Speaker 1: getting extra attention score right late in games and he's
- 3:24Speaker 1: pinning his ears back because they're up against Arizona and
- 3:27Speaker 1: he ends up blogging two sacks late in the game.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Like those types of things, they are going to look
- 3:32Speaker 1: at in terms of his value and are they going
- 3:34Speaker 1: to pay a player that has not developed in the
- 3:37Speaker 1: run game really just a passing down to player and
- 3:39Speaker 1: josh Uch are they going to pay him? So in reality,
- 3:43Speaker 1: it's probably not a need that they can addressed early.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But if it's best player available and they're on the
- 3:50Speaker 1: clock at fourteen and Tyree Wilson from Texas Tech is
- 3:54Speaker 1: still sitting there for some reason, it's gonna be a
- 3:57Speaker 1: conversation that we're gonna have. That's a great guy you
- 3:59Speaker 1: brought up In was somebody that I listened to a
- 4:01Speaker 1: lot today and just had something about him to me.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You know that just sometimes you see these guys and
- 4:06Speaker 1: I you know, and probably a lot of times I'm
- 4:08Speaker 1: wrong on these kind of things, but you know, some
- 4:10Speaker 1: guys just give you a vibe of like, this guy
- 4:11Speaker 1: is a serious, serious football player. A Keyon White was
- 4:14Speaker 1: another one that I just kind of listened to. I know,
- 4:16Speaker 1: we've had some discussions about him. I think was it
- 4:18Speaker 1: Daniel Jeremiah believe like named him as one of the fits,
- 4:21Speaker 1: which I was kind of, you know, Patriots fit, wasn't
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know, not a guy that jumped out to me initially,
- 4:25Speaker 1: but once you kind of hear him talk though, you
- 4:28Speaker 1: see them, you get a sense to them. I'm like,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I could kind of see these guys fit into the
- 4:31Speaker 1: locker room. But both of them probably gone before the
- 4:33Speaker 1: Patriots are going to invest in a pick on that position. Yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Tyree Wilson should be a top ten pick. But I
- 4:38Speaker 1: think the one thing that you look at with him,
- 4:40Speaker 1: he's one of the most physically strong, like just Alpha's
- 4:44Speaker 1: in this draft. He made handles guys at the point
- 4:47Speaker 1: of attack. But the issue, I think what you see
- 4:49Speaker 1: with him is that he's not an overly bendy edge rusher.
- 4:53Speaker 1: He doesn't have great flexibility gray Ben to turn a
- 4:55Speaker 1: tight corner. And when you project to the league nowadays,
- 4:59Speaker 1: the guys that are putting up great numbers in the
- 5:02Speaker 1: pass rushing statistics are the UJA types that are just
- 5:06Speaker 1: these screamers off the edge that have great flexibility turn
- 5:09Speaker 1: that tight corner and get the quarterback. Guys that have
- 5:12Speaker 1: to go through tackles are not necessarily as easily projectable
- 5:17Speaker 1: into the NFL. So if that's the way the league
- 5:19Speaker 1: sees it as well, then maybe he could slip down
- 5:22Speaker 1: just a little bit. He mentioned I didn't see it
- 5:25Speaker 1: with him. I did watch his film before we got here,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and I saw a really well rounded, solid football player.
- 5:33Speaker 1: But I think if you're drafting in the top fifty,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I would like a little bit more upside. I think
- 5:39Speaker 1: he would be a good pro for them on his
- 5:40Speaker 1: rookie contract, but I don't know if he's a game
- 5:42Speaker 1: changing player, kind of like what I think they were
- 5:45Speaker 1: hoping they were going to get out of Jennings. You know,
- 5:47Speaker 1: j was sort of the upside, right, and Jennings was
- 5:50Speaker 1: sort of just the steady Eddie, I kind of look
- 5:52Speaker 1: at White like that. Yeah, it makes sense, you know.
- 5:55Speaker 1: So just to run down with a few guys, I mean,
- 5:57Speaker 1: they just rattled them off here quick today. Defensive lineman,
- 5:59Speaker 1: line backers, then defensive lineman as well. You know a
- 6:03Speaker 1: couple of guys. Just to highlight, we talked to a
- 6:05Speaker 1: lot of the Shrine Bowl guys, you know, guys who
- 6:06Speaker 1: really appreciated that experience with the Patriots coaches. Brenton Cox
- 6:10Speaker 1: from Florida being one of those guys in a famous
- 6:13Speaker 1: picture of you know, Bill showing him a little bit
- 6:14Speaker 1: about hand placement. Um. You know another guy that that
- 6:18Speaker 1: I thought really uh, you know, kind of stood out
- 6:20Speaker 1: to me was Isaiah Moore. I was a Shrine Bowl guy,
- 6:22Speaker 1: but just he seemed like and it was it was
- 6:25Speaker 1: one that had slipped through the cracks as far as like,
- 6:26Speaker 1: oh shoot, why are all the Patriots reporters standing over
- 6:28Speaker 1: that guy? And they're like, oh, I oh, he was
- 6:30Speaker 1: in the Shrine Bowl. But he went into a little
- 6:32Speaker 1: bit more detail, very complimentary of Brian Belichick. Um, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 1: just overall, everybody seemed to take a lot from the
- 6:38Speaker 1: Patriot coaching staff in Las Vegas, with the Shrine Bowl,
- 6:40Speaker 1: there was a couple of guys like Isaiah Moore. I
- 6:43Speaker 1: really liked Tyrius Wheat, who we spoke to a little
- 6:45Speaker 1: bit too. I think Wheat is more of an on
- 6:48Speaker 1: the line player edge defender than an off ball linebacker.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Pretty serious too. More Moore is going to be an
- 6:54Speaker 1: off ball linebacker. I think with Wheat, when we were
- 6:57Speaker 1: talking to him, I tried to ask him a couple
- 6:59Speaker 1: of different questions in a couple different ways. I think
- 7:01Speaker 1: he knows the Patriots like him a little bit, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: I don't think he really wanted to burn that bridge
- 7:06Speaker 1: by going out in the media and saying, yeah, the
- 7:10Speaker 1: Patriots love me, huh. You know. I think that there
- 7:13Speaker 1: there is some a little bit of lip service there.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But with More he wasn't somebody that initially stood out
- 7:19Speaker 1: to me at Shrine Bowl practice watching practices live. But
- 7:23Speaker 1: when I watched some of the drills back after practice,
- 7:27Speaker 1: because I had they hyped him up during the game broadcast,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and I was like, really, like, this is a guy
- 7:33Speaker 1: that they really thought stood out like I didn't see it,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and neither did Alex Barth. And then I went back
- 7:38Speaker 1: and watched I was like, all right, yeah, I can
- 7:40Speaker 1: see how they can see that sort of positionally sound.
- 7:44Speaker 1: He's in the right spots and against the run gap,
- 7:47Speaker 1: sound player that can come downhill and take on blocks
- 7:50Speaker 1: and do the Patriot thing. But we're gonna talk about
- 7:53Speaker 1: it a little bit. I think when we get to
- 7:54Speaker 1: some of the bigger name linebackers in this draft, at
- 7:56Speaker 1: some point in time, they do need to evolve a
- 7:59Speaker 1: little bit at that spot. And Isaiah Moore's you know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I like him. I liked Anthony Orgy from Vanderbilt that
- 8:06Speaker 1: we hyped up a little bit during Shrine Bowl week.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Those guys are good players, I think for what they
- 8:11Speaker 1: would normally want. But at one point in time, does
- 8:14Speaker 1: what they normally want become a thing of the past.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I think that's an honest conversation. It is a good question,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and it's you know, and they're kind of I don't
- 8:21Speaker 1: want to say they're stocked right now with strong safety
- 8:23Speaker 1: because obviously have Kyle Dugger coming to the end, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: Adrian Phillips is now thirty, and you know, I saw
- 8:28Speaker 1: his role evolve a little bit this year. We know
- 8:29Speaker 1: we're still waiting on Devin mccordy. I mean, I take
- 8:31Speaker 1: Jibril Pepper's back. He plays with a bad attitude, and
- 8:34Speaker 1: I just like that aggressively all of you know, a
- 8:36Speaker 1: little bit over the top, like whoa whoa hold on
- 8:38Speaker 1: Jibral Really like him. But it's a great question. And
- 8:41Speaker 1: I mean I was curious just to kind of hear
- 8:43Speaker 1: Drew Sanders today. He was one that said, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 1: he has played inside outside, but said I think I'm
- 8:47Speaker 1: more of an inside guy. I just I just wonder
- 8:50Speaker 1: if they're going to pull the trigger on a guy
- 8:51Speaker 1: like that. When you got Bentley back for a year,
- 8:53Speaker 1: it seems like they could probably have Bentley back for
- 8:55Speaker 1: a few years if they wanted to even extend him further.
- 8:57Speaker 1: After resigning him to a two year deal last year,
- 9:00Speaker 1: Ni Tavai signs a multi year deal with them, they
- 9:02Speaker 1: clearly have some plans for him as well. Both of
- 9:04Speaker 1: them kind of fit the old mold. But I between
- 9:07Speaker 1: Drew Sanders is one and then the other is Trent
- 9:10Speaker 1: and Simpson. I feel like those are kind of the
- 9:11Speaker 1: first round off the ball potential guys. Not a great
- 9:13Speaker 1: draft class, but yeah, what you've seen from those guys,
- 9:15Speaker 1: so I didn't love what I saw from Simpson. I
- 9:18Speaker 1: think that Simpson to me, is a more linear athlete
- 9:22Speaker 1: that didn't have great change of direction from what I
- 9:25Speaker 1: could see, and more of just that straight line thumper
- 9:29Speaker 1: that I think has some Nick Bolton from Kansas City
- 9:33Speaker 1: in him, which I know is a big name right
- 9:35Speaker 1: now from the Super Bowl. So I think he's got
- 9:37Speaker 1: that type of build, you know, kind of more of
- 9:39Speaker 1: a stocky guy, and then he's got this great explosive
- 9:42Speaker 1: straight line speed. Sanders really intrigues me because at Arkansas
- 9:46Speaker 1: they lined him up in all three locations that the
- 9:49Speaker 1: Patriots love to use linebackers in line, over the guards,
- 9:53Speaker 1: edge off the ball right, kind of that Kyle van
- 9:56Speaker 1: Noy type of role where they move him around and
- 9:59Speaker 1: have different goals to get him after the quarterback or
- 10:01Speaker 1: drop or whatever the case may be. And he also
- 10:05Speaker 1: served a lot in the middle of the field as
- 10:07Speaker 1: a spy or even just like in a low zone
- 10:09Speaker 1: but with eyes on the quarterback. And against Alabama he
- 10:13Speaker 1: had quite a few, I want to say two or
- 10:14Speaker 1: three times came streaking across the field and tackled Bryce
- 10:18Speaker 1: Young on scrambles and when that happened, there's one in
- 10:22Speaker 1: particular where I think he actually got a sack technically
- 10:25Speaker 1: in the box scorers like one of those half yard sacks,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and but it was an it went, you know, middle
- 10:30Speaker 1: of the field all the way out to the sideline
- 10:32Speaker 1: and he's able to beat him to the corner and
- 10:34Speaker 1: get Bryce Young on the ground. Those types of players,
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think you look at them and you say, all right,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you know, that's something that they could potentially use. And
- 10:41Speaker 1: the one other guy who had mentioned other than those two,
- 10:44Speaker 1: Jack Campbell, from he to me is not necessarily the
- 10:49Speaker 1: freak athlete that people might want at that spot. But instinctually,
- 10:54Speaker 1: this is a really instinctual player, Like he understands what
- 10:59Speaker 1: he's looking at. He understands alignments and splits and formations
- 11:04Speaker 1: and how to pre snap diagnose what defense or excuse me,
- 11:08Speaker 1: offenses or maybe doing. And he had a great play
- 11:11Speaker 1: against Ohio stated and coverage where he took a slant
- 11:14Speaker 1: away over the middle of the field for CJ. Strade
- 11:17Speaker 1: to hold the ball and they ended up getting a
- 11:19Speaker 1: strip sack because Stroud had nowhere to go with the football. Like,
- 11:22Speaker 1: those are the types of players that you see with
- 11:24Speaker 1: him on film. I think he might take some people
- 11:26Speaker 1: by surprise with his athleticism maybe not in the forty,
- 11:29Speaker 1: but if he runs the agility drills, I think he's
- 11:31Speaker 1: going to test really well in that three cone. We
- 11:34Speaker 1: know that they love shuttle the three cone stuff like that. Yeah,
- 11:36Speaker 1: he caught my attention today and again, you know, player,
- 11:39Speaker 1: it kind of like you know, reviewed and didn't really
- 11:41Speaker 1: initially like star room or anything, but just listen to
- 11:43Speaker 1: him and talking. You know, you brought it up. He
- 11:45Speaker 1: was kind of describing what he's expecting in the NFL
- 11:48Speaker 1: in terms of, you know, I might have to one
- 11:50Speaker 1: play tackle Nick Chubb and then the next play I'm
- 11:53Speaker 1: dropping in coverage and I'm on Tyreek Hill. You know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: just explaining all the different things that a player like
- 11:57Speaker 1: him could possibly do for a defense. So, you know,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I underlined some guys today. He was one of them.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Go back, take a look at them. See you know,
- 12:05Speaker 1: is there something there? But you just laid it out
- 12:08Speaker 1: really well. All podium team, he's up there. I think
- 12:11Speaker 1: Nolan Smith from Georgia too is another all talk about him.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I know. Well, so he gave a long one. There
- 12:16Speaker 1: were some tears, very well spoken. Yeah, I mean I
- 12:19Speaker 1: think my thing with him, you can tell me what
- 12:22Speaker 1: you think he felt like. He was light like. It's
- 12:23Speaker 1: just I didn't know how we fit into the Patriot system.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And you know, for an edge player, it's hard to
- 12:27Speaker 1: see him whatever he is to twenty in that range
- 12:30Speaker 1: being an edge player for them, maybe an off the
- 12:31Speaker 1: ball guy. But he had a lot to say today,
- 12:34Speaker 1: so I kind of felt like I was listening to
- 12:35Speaker 1: Matthew Slater for a minute. He had that added he's
- 12:38Speaker 1: a statesman right like he was. He owned the room.
- 12:41Speaker 1: People were gravitating towards his podium because they could just
- 12:44Speaker 1: hear the fire that he was talking with. And he
- 12:47Speaker 1: was just a very well spoken, very motivated, passionate type
- 12:51Speaker 1: of football player. You can tell he loves football and
- 12:54Speaker 1: he just wants to be good at it and wants
- 12:56Speaker 1: to work hard at it. I agree with you that
- 12:58Speaker 1: he's a little bit of a of an anomaly, like
- 13:01Speaker 1: a tweeter, you know, almost where he played a lot
- 13:04Speaker 1: at Georgia with his hand in the dirt, and I
- 13:07Speaker 1: don't think he's gonna be heavy enough to play hand
- 13:10Speaker 1: in the dirt role in the NFL. But the one
- 13:12Speaker 1: thing that you can definitely say about him really good
- 13:15Speaker 1: first step off the ball certainly can fire into gaps
- 13:18Speaker 1: or fire around the edge. And he's just one of
- 13:20Speaker 1: those guys that is like slithery, Like it's just hard
- 13:24Speaker 1: to block him sometimes, you know, like you just you're
- 13:27Speaker 1: kind of like, how did he get through? But he
- 13:29Speaker 1: like sort of does get through. So he's one of
- 13:32Speaker 1: those instinctive, like nose for the football kind of guys. So,
- 13:35Speaker 1: just a good football player. And I always wonder why
- 13:38Speaker 1: they don't draft more from the Georgia defense. A because
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's an awesome defense the top twelve, but B because
- 13:46Speaker 1: they do run a Sabin Belichick style system. That's what
- 13:50Speaker 1: and that's what he talked about. I heard him saying,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you know, we're very much about team defense. They are,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and I mean we saw it last year, you know
- 13:55Speaker 1: with the top pick overall, I'm blank on his name,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and um, you know with Todaville or a yeah who
- 14:01Speaker 1: you know didn't really have a position Walker, Thank you,
- 14:03Speaker 1: Travon Walker. Yeah, um, you know, so it's it's interesting.
- 14:05Speaker 1: One more guy I wanted to bring up to you
- 14:06Speaker 1: have because we were both standing around and was Ivan Pace. Um.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I just thought he was an interesting guy. Um, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 1: people question him about his you know, we sized to
- 14:14Speaker 1: take on guards and he's, you know, just talking about
- 14:16Speaker 1: running right through guys. I don't know what's there, but
- 14:18Speaker 1: he just seemed like kind of an interesting guy here talk.
- 14:20Speaker 1: So there was a rep at the Senior Bowl. I
- 14:22Speaker 1: actually asked him about it during the game where he
- 14:25Speaker 1: went right through the guard and it was almost like
- 14:28Speaker 1: a butt fumble because he hit the guard into the
- 14:31Speaker 1: running back and the running back fell with the ball
- 14:33Speaker 1: in his hands, like he tackled the running back through
- 14:35Speaker 1: the guard. He like threw the guard back into it.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And I just remember watching that and I was like, whoa,
- 14:40Speaker 1: all right, that's some serious play strength. And the guard
- 14:43Speaker 1: that he tossed was Osireus Torrence, Who's gonna be a
- 14:48Speaker 1: first round round first round parting. So this isn't about
- 14:51Speaker 1: like some u DFA right, like this is a really good,
- 14:54Speaker 1: uh sometimes consensus interior offensive lineman one in this track
- 15:00Speaker 1: that he's just throwing like a rag doll. So I
- 15:03Speaker 1: think that there's definitely something there, And we talked about
- 15:05Speaker 1: maybe edge linebacker being a position further down the board
- 15:10Speaker 1: for them. I think pace could be like a fourth
- 15:12Speaker 1: round guy that they could get their hands on on
- 15:14Speaker 1: Day three special teams. Madman, Right, that's exactly what they need.
- 15:19Speaker 1: A lot of good stuff there. Last thing I kind
- 15:20Speaker 1: of want to bring up here just in terms of
- 15:22Speaker 1: this position group, and again it's you know, probably not
- 15:25Speaker 1: the most interesting day. I think the next three days
- 15:26Speaker 1: are going to be really fascinating for us positions, right exactly,
- 15:31Speaker 1: Jake Moody, I mean, we gotta get in on that.
- 15:33Speaker 1: But um, it's just I feel like this is a
- 15:35Speaker 1: pretty good Day three, late Day two kind of nose
- 15:37Speaker 1: tackle class and you know, not the sexiest position, but
- 15:40Speaker 1: it's certainly one that the Patriots need. You've seen Carl
- 15:42Speaker 1: Davis do you know, pretty good job. We had some
- 15:44Speaker 1: inconsistency in terms of penalties, jumping off side a couple
- 15:47Speaker 1: of times, I know, in some big moments, but I
- 15:49Speaker 1: mean I think he's been a pretty solid player. But
- 15:52Speaker 1: you know, you mentioned PJ. Mustafer was one that we
- 15:54Speaker 1: mentioned on the wrap up as a good one. I mean,
- 15:57Speaker 1: you know, I'm not sure where exactly Coastal Carolina and
- 16:00Speaker 1: Brighton's own guy is gonna land here with Rod Clark
- 16:04Speaker 1: quite talked to him, was great and was a big
- 16:05Speaker 1: Patriots fan. Um, those are just two to mention. I mean,
- 16:08Speaker 1: there's there's also the other thing that always confused me, Evan.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I don't know about you with this, um, but there's
- 16:12Speaker 1: like a couple of guys that all have the same name.
- 16:14Speaker 1: There's like two three different guys that have the same name.
- 16:16Speaker 1: But I think there's like Byron Youngs. There's like two
- 16:18Speaker 1: Byron Youngs and once from Tennessee, once from Alice. I
- 16:22Speaker 1: like them both though. Yeah, yeah, there's two Byron Youngs.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So the other guy that I would mentioned, uh, I
- 16:27Speaker 1: think it's Ica. Is how you pronounced that you might
- 16:30Speaker 1: have the I got. I got pronunciations here, um uh
- 16:34Speaker 1: from now I'm biking on the school of course, but
- 16:38Speaker 1: he's more I'll find it. So the guy that I
- 16:41Speaker 1: see in his game is kind of Danny Shelton esque.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Where remember when the Patriots originally got Danny Yeah poo yeah, yeah,
- 16:51Speaker 1: Remember where's he go to school again? Baylor, Baylor. Yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 1: that's him. Uh. When they got Danny Shelton, they thought
- 16:58Speaker 1: he was a three to four two gapping nose tackles
- 17:02Speaker 1: and he's a guy. And I remember Bill Belichick talking
- 17:05Speaker 1: about that that they they had it wrong the first
- 17:08Speaker 1: year and then he came back. Remember, Shelton had a
- 17:10Speaker 1: really good second season with the Patriots, and I look
- 17:13Speaker 1: at I look at the Baylor kids as a very
- 17:15Speaker 1: similar type of player, where this is a three hundred
- 17:18Speaker 1: and sixty pound dude, but he's an up the field player.
- 17:22Speaker 1: He's not a hold the point of attack type of players.
- 17:24Speaker 1: So I think it's really interesting because the league is
- 17:28Speaker 1: certainly trending away from nose tackles like three four two
- 17:31Speaker 1: gapping nose tackles is really a thing of the past,
- 17:34Speaker 1: except for a handful of three four teams that still
- 17:37Speaker 1: play those odd fronts and need that guy to eat
- 17:39Speaker 1: stuff in the middle of The Patriots are still one
- 17:42Speaker 1: of those teams, like they really are, So we'll see
- 17:45Speaker 1: what happens. I mean, I think this comes back to
- 17:47Speaker 1: the linebacker thing too, though at some point I don't
- 17:51Speaker 1: necessarily need to go to a four to three, but
- 17:53Speaker 1: a more attacking three four might be where the league
- 17:56Speaker 1: as a whole is trending for those odd front teams
- 17:59Speaker 1: just because you got to be able to get after
- 18:01Speaker 1: the quarterback and you have to be able to stop
- 18:02Speaker 1: the pass and it's not about gap control and you know,
- 18:06Speaker 1: integrity and all that kind of stuff as much anymore.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So maybe he's somebody that is a little bit of both, right,
- 18:12Speaker 1: you can still do a little bit of both of those.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I think it's tough with those two gaps too, because
- 18:16Speaker 1: early downs, I just feel like you're not likely to
- 18:18Speaker 1: get pressure up the middle, and it's most likely if
- 18:20Speaker 1: a team wants to throw anyone first down and you
- 18:22Speaker 1: got your base defense out there with those tackle they're
- 18:24Speaker 1: gonna have a pocket to work without it, you know,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and then the quick passing game just kills you. I
- 18:29Speaker 1: don't know. We always wonder what kind of scheme evolution
- 18:31Speaker 1: is going to happen. We're talking here, linebackers, speedy linebackers,
- 18:34Speaker 1: penetrating defensive tackle. We're gonna happen, I remember, gonna happen.
- 18:37Speaker 1: They're probably gonna stick to what usually works for them.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Anything else that I missed today worth pointing out guys
- 18:44Speaker 1: that we didn't mention again. You know, it's just one
- 18:47Speaker 1: of those tough couple of spots where you don't know
- 18:50Speaker 1: what they need and you're not quite sure, Yeah, you're
- 18:52Speaker 1: going to tap any of these in the first two days.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I don't know if you're going here yet. But the
- 18:56Speaker 1: edge defenders, we did ask a bunch of the edge
- 18:58Speaker 1: rushers about who were the toughest tackles that you faced.
- 19:02Speaker 1: So I actually asked Will Anderson, who might now be
- 19:05Speaker 1: the number one pick in the draft, and I asked him,
- 19:08Speaker 1: who's the toughest tackle that you faced last year? And
- 19:10Speaker 1: he mentioned Darnell right from Tennessee, and he had Darnell
- 19:14Speaker 1: Wright had a fantastic game against Will basically shut out
- 19:17Speaker 1: Will Anderson the number one pick in the draft, and
- 19:20Speaker 1: every single step along the way with Darnell Wright, whenever
- 19:23Speaker 1: he plays top competition, Will Anderson, Clemson's guys, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: just Senior Bowl, he just dominated. He dominated good competition.
- 19:33Speaker 1: He's not the most consistent or a fine player quite yet,
- 19:37Speaker 1: but whenever the lights were brightest that he played lights out.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And he's a right tackle three forty five three forty
- 19:45Speaker 1: see what he weighs in here, But he's that Patriot
- 19:49Speaker 1: bulldozer on the right side, right like that's him and
- 19:52Speaker 1: on Winnie on the same side of the line. They
- 19:55Speaker 1: will push people off the ball with ease in short
- 19:58Speaker 1: yard situations. Well, I mean, what we're kind of looking
- 20:00Speaker 1: for is the Sebastian volomer, and we've been spending some
- 20:02Speaker 1: time here. Sebastian Volmer has been working with talking some
- 20:04Speaker 1: seventies protections. He's given us a little insight, but he's
- 20:08Speaker 1: been doing a lot of work for for the Germany
- 20:09Speaker 1: game that's going to be this fall and and all that.
- 20:11Speaker 1: So it's been kind of fine, you know, or like, jeez,
- 20:13Speaker 1: how can we find the next Sebastian Volmer. I know
- 20:15Speaker 1: there's talk of oh, we need a left tackle in
- 20:16Speaker 1: a right tackle. It's like, even if you could lock
- 20:18Speaker 1: down just the right side, you know, and get one
- 20:20Speaker 1: thing figured out this year, that would be great. Uh.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Quick preview tomorrow cornerbacks Special Teams mentioned Jake Moody. I mean,
- 20:27Speaker 1: we'll go talk to him with the Shrine Bowl MVP Patriots.
- 20:30Speaker 1: You know, long term need always, but the cornerbacks, and
- 20:34Speaker 1: I just think this is a big position in need.
- 20:37Speaker 1: And I'm kind of torn because on one hand, I
- 20:39Speaker 1: feel pretty good about how well they coach up cornerbacks,
- 20:42Speaker 1: how well they find them in lower rounds and even
- 20:44Speaker 1: undrafted guys. Now that said, I'm actually I'm gonna I'm
- 20:48Speaker 1: gonna say, wait just for a second. Into conversation with that,
- 20:50Speaker 1: I've been kind of bringing up a couple of times
- 20:51Speaker 1: that I think is interesting and that you know, Patriots
- 20:53Speaker 1: had sixty sacks last year, they were twenty second in
- 20:56Speaker 1: third down defense, and you know, just where's that disconnect.
- 20:59Speaker 1: It was a conversation and we're having over a couple
- 21:00Speaker 1: of beers out here in Indy. That's what we do, right,
- 21:02Speaker 1: We were talking more football, But you know, I think
- 21:05Speaker 1: we both kind of are in agreement that maybe what's
- 21:08Speaker 1: missing is really that elite corner to put on that
- 21:11Speaker 1: top option to slow everything down. As much as I
- 21:13Speaker 1: want to believe that a pass rush can overcome, you know,
- 21:16Speaker 1: lack of coverage deficiencies, it seems like this might be
- 21:20Speaker 1: a spot where hey, let's go get a talented guy
- 21:22Speaker 1: up near the top. And I think there's plenty of
- 21:23Speaker 1: picks that could possibly make sense in the top four
- 21:26Speaker 1: team will seem tomorrow. It's always the age old debate
- 21:30Speaker 1: pass rush or coverage, right, and PFF in places like
- 21:33Speaker 1: that have done deep dives and analytical deep dives into this,
- 21:37Speaker 1: and I think the bottom line is is that to
- 21:39Speaker 1: have a really good defense, you gotta have both. Like
- 21:41Speaker 1: it's not one or the other. You truly have to
- 21:43Speaker 1: have bold. And I think there's a school thought in
- 21:46Speaker 1: the league now that corners are maybe a little bit
- 21:51Speaker 1: overvalued in the market. And if you have those great paths,
- 21:53Speaker 1: like you look at a defense like San Francisco, who
- 21:57Speaker 1: are the corners that you can really name the award?
- 21:59Speaker 1: Probably each various ward, but they're really about Bosa in
- 22:03Speaker 1: the front. Right. So that's I think a conversation. But
- 22:07Speaker 1: I think when you face these great quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes,
- 22:11Speaker 1: Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, the guys the Patriots are gonna
- 22:14Speaker 1: have to go through Joe Burrow. Of course you're gonna
- 22:16Speaker 1: eventually get into third and seven. It's gonna be our
- 22:20Speaker 1: guys against your guys, and who can win a one
- 22:23Speaker 1: on one? Yeah, and right now, not only do I
- 22:26Speaker 1: think the Patriots are punching above their weight in some
- 22:29Speaker 1: of these battles across the board, they also don't have
- 22:32Speaker 1: great body types. Yeah, you know, they don't have a
- 22:34Speaker 1: great diversity there. It's all these undersized guys. So this draft,
- 22:39Speaker 1: I think, other than tight end, I would say the
- 22:41Speaker 1: deepest position group in this draft is corner. So and
- 22:45Speaker 1: then let me ask you another question. Is I'm trying
- 22:47Speaker 1: to wrap it up, but I also this is another
- 22:48Speaker 1: philosophical question, is is you know when you say that
- 22:50Speaker 1: there's a deep position group, generally, does it make sense
- 22:53Speaker 1: to say, well, then we can just get one of
- 22:55Speaker 1: the middle ones and that'll be good enough. Or do
- 22:57Speaker 1: you say it's a deep group, let's get the best
- 22:59Speaker 1: of the deep. You know, that's the philosophical question I
- 23:01Speaker 1: have as well. It's a good question, and they, I
- 23:04Speaker 1: would say, tend to go towards the let's get the
- 23:07Speaker 1: third or fourth round. They're just as good type of
- 23:10Speaker 1: thing the old clusters, right. You know, we have a
- 23:13Speaker 1: bunch of guys in the same cluster. I love. Christian
- 23:16Speaker 1: Gonzalez from Oregon, who we're going to talk to tomorrow,
- 23:18Speaker 1: is probably the top top corner in the draft, besides
- 23:21Speaker 1: maybe Devin Witherspoon from Illinois, a little bit smaller. Gonzalez
- 23:25Speaker 1: checks every box. He's six foot two, extremely fluid guy,
- 23:28Speaker 1: can play man, can play his zone, can play off,
- 23:31Speaker 1: can play on like he can do everything, like everything
- 23:33Speaker 1: that you would want him to do. I really like
- 23:36Speaker 1: his game, but there's it's fair. Deontay Banks from Maryland,
- 23:40Speaker 1: Julius Brents from Kansas States some guys that I've hyped
- 23:43Speaker 1: up already in this process. Those guys can play too. Now, Brents,
- 23:47Speaker 1: excuse me, Banks is somebody that we've heard whispers might
- 23:52Speaker 1: run like a low for three and so maybe all
- 23:55Speaker 1: of a sudden he's somebody that at forty six is
- 23:57Speaker 1: a real conversation. If he runs that, well, it's foot two,
- 24:00Speaker 1: two hundred and five pounds. That's incredible, that's incredible speed.
- 24:04Speaker 1: So we'll see there's a lot of really good corners
- 24:07Speaker 1: in this draft. Joey Porter Junior is another name we got.
- 24:10Speaker 1: We can't take him though. You gotta mention him, but
- 24:14Speaker 1: I could go on, and I mean, I just I
- 24:16Speaker 1: gotta point out too. I mean I've watched some of
- 24:17Speaker 1: Devin Witherspoon. That guy's got more big hits, Like he
- 24:19Speaker 1: just comes flying into the background backfield crushing guys. It's
- 24:24Speaker 1: fun to watch. I'm not sure exactly how it all
- 24:26Speaker 1: matches up, but but certainly in need and I'll be
- 24:28Speaker 1: curious how much they put into it. So I think
- 24:30Speaker 1: that'll do it for us. I don't know if there's
- 24:32Speaker 1: anything else to add, but we will certainly be back tomorrow,
- 24:34Speaker 1: and I think they'll be even more to discuss, and
- 24:37Speaker 1: certainly as the testing starts to happen, we'll have another
- 24:40Speaker 1: layer to discuss, because it's one thing to talk to
- 24:42Speaker 1: these guys as as dudes, and a lot of them
- 24:44Speaker 1: seem like great dudes. I mean, Gerald Clark, I'm like
- 24:47Speaker 1: to hang out with this guy. He's awesome. But you know,
- 24:49Speaker 1: at the end of the day, it's about what happens
- 24:50Speaker 1: on the field, So excited to see the DBS. Then Friday,
- 24:53Speaker 1: we got quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs, last but not least,
- 24:57Speaker 1: the offensive line at the end, so we'll get to
- 25:00Speaker 1: get a look at some of those guys too, and
- 25:01Speaker 1: we will be back every day with a podcast here
- 25:03Speaker 1: to kind of talk all these things out in a slow,
- 25:06Speaker 1: relaxed environment. So thanks for listening, and we'll be back tomorrow.
