- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Jim Mora was
- 0:03Speaker 1: Yukon goes to Delaware. They play a three o'clock game
- 0:06Speaker 1: on Saturday, pregames at one thirty on the Yukon Sports Network. Jim,
- 0:11Speaker 1: just to follow up on some of the individual efforts defensively.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm telling you, and you know you were standing right
- 0:18Speaker 1: down there on the sideline. I could feel some of
- 0:20Speaker 1: the hits being put on by Omar Diamonde, Dumont Brinson,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Brian Parham. I mean, these guys were rocking down there.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Brian param seven tackles, had a sack, a tackle for
- 0:33Speaker 1: loss a Tyrese Mills, whereas number fourteen had a you know,
- 0:37Speaker 1: step in to replace an injured guy. Six tackles and
- 0:41Speaker 1: a force fumble and a tackle for loss. I mean, overall,
- 0:45Speaker 1: defense had seven tackles for loss. I believe in three sacks.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I mean that's a big improvement over week.
- 0:50Speaker 2: One, big improvement, Mike, and that's how we expect to play.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You know, that's that's a Matt Brock defense right there. Yeah,
- 1:01Speaker 2: there was a lot of things that were reason to
- 1:05Speaker 2: be encouraged. You know, the physicality we played with, as
- 1:09Speaker 2: you mentioned the violence, the aggression, the tackling was good.
- 1:13Speaker 2: We covered well for the most part. Now what we
- 1:15Speaker 2: have to be able to do is in those critical
- 1:17Speaker 2: moments is once again is calm our mind and do
- 1:19Speaker 2: our job and make the plays that you know we
- 1:22Speaker 2: need to make. And that's got to happen now, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: it's got to happen consistently. And it's up to us
- 1:30Speaker 2: as a staff to make sure that we're putting our
- 1:32Speaker 2: players in the best position to do what they do well.
- 1:34Speaker 2: That's our job. And then the players have to go
- 1:36Speaker 2: out and they've got a performance. So it's all of
- 1:38Speaker 2: us joining together and doing the right things on a
- 1:41Speaker 2: consistent basis that's going to help us become a good
- 1:43Speaker 2: football team.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and you created two turnovers, an interception and a
- 1:47Speaker 1: fumble recovery, and you only allowed a little less than
- 1:51Speaker 1: two hundred yards over the first three quarters. I mean,
- 1:54Speaker 1: you had the Orange offense more or less under control.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I guess you know. It always felt like to me
- 2:00Speaker 1: like if you get one more score, that would do it,
- 2:03Speaker 1: that would close the door. But you couldn't get that
- 2:05Speaker 1: final score.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Well, see, there's you're so right, Like you're right, and
- 2:11Speaker 2: I don't know if we'd close the door, but it
- 2:12Speaker 2: would have been a lot harder. And then there's plays
- 2:15Speaker 2: in that game that nobody even remembers that had an
- 2:18Speaker 2: impact on us not being able to get the extra score.
- 2:21Speaker 3: You know, there was a holding call late in the
- 2:25Speaker 3: third quarter.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You know that took us out of field goal range,
- 2:28Speaker 2: and that's three points right there. Obviously. You know we
- 2:32Speaker 2: had the missnap the snap air early in the game.
- 2:34Speaker 2: That was three points right there. You know, we had
- 2:39Speaker 2: to start backed up a couple times once because of
- 2:42Speaker 2: a penalty. You know, that's a play right there that
- 2:44Speaker 2: we can't we can't have. You know, when you're playing
- 2:46Speaker 2: a good football team, you have to minimize the self
- 2:50Speaker 2: inflicted wounds. And we didn't do a good enough job
- 2:53Speaker 2: of that. Now, we were disciplined. We only had four penalties.
- 2:56Speaker 2: That's not a lot, but what matters is when those
- 2:58Speaker 2: penalties occur, you know, and so there's a lot of
- 3:02Speaker 2: good things, but you know, a loss is a loss,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and the most important thing you can do after a
- 3:06Speaker 2: loss is, like I said, you don't rationalize it. You
- 3:08Speaker 2: don't make excuses, you hit ahead on you take responsibility
- 3:12Speaker 2: and ownership, and then you learn those lessons and you
- 3:14Speaker 2: come out and you apply them with determination to resolve,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and you let it fuel you as you get ready
- 3:19Speaker 2: to play the next game.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 1: One of the things that happened in that game as
- 3:23Speaker 1: well was stopping them on fourth down deep in your
- 3:26Speaker 1: own in your territory. I think the ten yard line twice.
- 3:30Speaker 1: That was impressive because obviously they get a first down
- 3:33Speaker 1: there Syracuse, They're gonna get points for sure, But they
- 3:37Speaker 1: went forward on fourth down and you were able to
- 3:38Speaker 1: stop them. That's not easy on any level, I don't
- 3:41Speaker 1: care if you're playing high school, college or pro football.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Our guys were prepared for that play. You know, we'd
- 3:46Speaker 2: shown them that play. They they were aware, they got
- 3:49Speaker 2: lined up quickly, and they stopped it. We had a
- 3:51Speaker 2: couple of really good shortyard it stops. I thought, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: keep points off the board. You know, Tyresi's SACCoS Fumber
- 3:58Speaker 2: covered fumble was nice play.
- 4:00Speaker 3: They were in field goal range, so you.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Know, I think, you know, if you look back last year,
- 4:07Speaker 2: you know we kind of got used to a defense
- 4:09Speaker 2: that was going to rise up and make those plays.
- 4:12Speaker 2: You know, and stopping a team on short yardage is
- 4:15Speaker 2: really hard. I mean, you're at a serious disadvantage on
- 4:17Speaker 2: defense just because of surge, you know, but I think
- 4:22Speaker 2: coach Brock and that staff they do a great job
- 4:24Speaker 2: of scheming in those situations. But it still comes down
- 4:26Speaker 2: to the players just exerting their force.
- 4:28Speaker 3: And our guys did that.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Umar Diamande had a nice game. Where's number thirty two?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Boys?
- 4:34Speaker 1: Did you got to pay attention to him? He had
- 4:35Speaker 1: nine tackles, two tackles for loss of sack, and now
- 4:40Speaker 1: that led to the missfield goal. So I mean, every
- 4:43Speaker 1: little play in these games really if you look back
- 4:45Speaker 1: at and that's what we do on Tuesdays a little bit,
- 4:48Speaker 1: we look back, we find what happened, how did how
- 4:50Speaker 1: did it end up this way? And that you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: at that point in the game, that could have been
- 4:55Speaker 1: the game right there, big sack, missfield goal, but it wasn't.
- 4:59Speaker 2: You know, sometimes you come out of a game that
- 5:01Speaker 2: you've lost and you go, I don't know.
- 5:02Speaker 3: What just happened? Exactly what just happened?
- 5:05Speaker 2: Like it was crystal clear at what happened to us,
- 5:08Speaker 2: crystal cleared our staff, crystal clear to our players why
- 5:11Speaker 2: we did not win that game. And when you can
- 5:15Speaker 2: define it, then you can address it. And you're going
- 5:18Speaker 2: to address it, and you've got mature players like we
- 5:20Speaker 2: have and they take it seriously, then you can fix it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: So I expected to get fixed.
- 5:27Speaker 1: In a strange way, and we're gonna move on to
- 5:29Speaker 1: Delaware here very shortly, but in a strange Yeah. No,
- 5:32Speaker 1: you're tired of this. But I felt like afterwards, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 1: thinking about it, just generally speaking, could something like this
- 5:41Speaker 1: in the second week of the year be a blessing
- 5:44Speaker 1: in disguise somehow? Could this be something that this team says, Okay,
- 5:49Speaker 1: we saw what happened. We should have won, but we didn't. Now,
- 5:53Speaker 1: how do we make that not happen again? I mean,
- 5:56Speaker 1: is that possible?
- 5:57Speaker 2: It has to be. It has to happen, and that's
- 6:00Speaker 2: It's a mandatory. And I'm not saying I don't want
- 6:03Speaker 2: to necessarily use the blessing in disguise, but it's mandatory
- 6:06Speaker 2: that we see how it happened, why it happened, and
- 6:09Speaker 2: we address it and make sure that we have the
- 6:10Speaker 2: resolve not to let it happen again. That's mandatory. And
- 6:14Speaker 2: all guys understand that. I listen, I'm not a big
- 6:20Speaker 2: blessing in disguise. When you lose kind of guy. You know,
- 6:22Speaker 2: losses are devastating. That was horrible, but failure handled properly
- 6:32Speaker 2: prepares you for success. And I think that you have
- 6:37Speaker 2: to inject that mindset into your players without like I said,
- 6:41Speaker 2: rationalizing the loss, you know. And that's how we try
- 6:45Speaker 2: to approach it, is what can we learn and having
- 6:50Speaker 2: the resolve to apply the lessons going forward to make
- 6:52Speaker 2: sure it doesn't happen again, you know. And then you know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: at the end of the year, if you can look
- 6:57Speaker 2: back and you can say, well, hey, you know, listen,
- 7:00Speaker 2: we learned our lesson right there and we didn't let
- 7:02Speaker 2: it happen again, that's damn right now. I'd like those
- 7:05Speaker 2: lessons to carry over from year to year, though. You know,
- 7:08Speaker 2: we've had some of those around here where we've been
- 7:11Speaker 2: really close against teams that you know, are power for
- 7:14Speaker 2: conference teams, and we've closed out a couple, but we
- 7:17Speaker 2: haven't closed out enough.
- 7:19Speaker 3: And our objective is to close those ones.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Out and not win. We don't want to win. We
- 7:24Speaker 2: don't want to lose close. We want to win.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the way to do it. That's the bottom
- 7:29Speaker 1: line of it. By the way, Husky Nation talked to
- 7:31Speaker 1: a lot of people in the last forty eight hours,
- 7:34Speaker 1: seventy two hours, they're big time behind you. They've had
- 7:37Speaker 1: they had a real good feeling about the game that
- 7:39Speaker 1: you just played. Just bite the loss. I didn't get
- 7:43Speaker 1: a lot of negatives coming from fans that I talked
- 7:46Speaker 1: to at all in the last seventy two hours. So
- 7:49Speaker 1: I mean, you turn that corner. I got you there.
- 7:51Speaker 1: You're one to one. I know you want to be
- 7:53Speaker 1: two and zero, but I think that's that's a positive.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And look at con football in the future.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I think are one of our goals is to get
- 8:03Speaker 2: to a point where if we do lose a game
- 8:06Speaker 2: like that, our fan base is disappointed. That means that
- 8:10Speaker 2: we've made progress, you know what I mean. Like to me,
- 8:13Speaker 2: that means that we've made progress where our fan base
- 8:17Speaker 2: says some bs that we lost that game. You know. Now,
- 8:21Speaker 2: I don't want to hear that, obviously, because I don't
- 8:24Speaker 2: want to lose the game, and it's hard to hear.
- 8:25Speaker 2: But I want our I want us as a program
- 8:28Speaker 2: to reach that point where our fans are they're they're
- 8:31Speaker 2: disappointed that we don't win a game like that, and
- 8:33Speaker 2: I mean disappointing because they believe we're better than that,
- 8:36Speaker 2: so that then I'll feel good about where we're headed,
- 8:38Speaker 2: where we are as a program. I mean I feel
- 8:40Speaker 2: good about where we are. Don't get me wrong, but
- 8:42Speaker 2: you know, I feel like, okay, this is yeah, yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 2: this is this is real.
- 8:47Speaker 1: So yeah, all right, we'll be back in just a moment.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Time out on the Yukon Football Coaches Show on lear
- 8:53Speaker 1: Field
