- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Well, hey, hello all you cowpoks and cowgirls welcome back to the Gramehawk and Lane podcast.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_02]: You get this voice to open every show in the month of April.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's country western month, huh?
- 0:10[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we're officially calling it gay cowboy month on the show this month.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_02]: Over here on the Patreon, we are covering all, uh, X-Men adjacent western characters.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_02]: And boy does gale some on love a cowgirl.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: We're just gonna start right there.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_02]: So we're going to be covering an incredible X-Men character full of potential the in using in as an as temple or outlaw I have two friends joining me today my friend Excel who had never heard of this character before and my Friend Tristan who outside of Giel Simone is the world's number one outlaw expert given that they wrote a book about outlaws
- 0:46[SPEAKER_02]: welcome you both.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan, I'd love to have you start with a little bit of introduction.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_02]: How did your Outlaw book happen?
- 0:51[SPEAKER_02]: What was it like for you to delve into the mind and world of this character?
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeehaw, hello.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: So Outlaw was the first time I wrote for Outlaw was in the the book that came before.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: I started writing for not for pros novels from our boat with novel called Domino Straise that took
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: timelines a little jumbled up the domino mini series and without law as well as a diamond
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: So those three featured in the novels, we had initially envisioned a trilogy of novels, one focusing on each member of that team, starting with Domino, going into Outlaw.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: Never got around to what Diamondback, as soon as I put the first words of dialogue to the page for Outlaw, I knew I wanted to keep going.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: She's very smart, distinctive, and has memorable voice
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: You wrote her with a very tough exterior, but a lot of heart, a lot of loyalty, and she's facing a villain in your book that is not a villain you would expect her to face.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_02]: We could talk a little bit about your book later.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: In fact, we have talked about it on the show a little bit when I've had you out of the past, but it's a wonderful read.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: Let me also welcome Excel to the show.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_02]: Excel, you were so willing to just jump in, unend the deep end with a character you've never heard of.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_02]: What are your initial thoughts on on as temple?
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: Well, uh, e-ha, I think we're all starting with some type of cowboys, but she's, I'm really glad to have done this because my first impression was just kind of like blonde cowgirl.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like I didn't even know that it got some of
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: that created her.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: So I was just kind of like this seems kind of just like a like horny guy's like you know wedry.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know like just didn't really call to me.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: I just I like to find reasons to like things so when you invited me on to talk about her even though I had read some of the Domino series but I had forgotten most of it.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I had read a little bit of her but she just hadn't really stuck and I'm really glad that you invited me on to do it because she's awesome.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: She's really like she really won me over.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: She's really lovely.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: Lots of lots of fun like kind of
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: So another character we're going to be covering this month on the Patreon is the newer character, Becca Simon Penette, where Calico, who Gail is currently writing in her uncanny X-Men, Calico is a younger mutant girl who has a horse and Gail is using a lot of similar kind of voice and then Gail just brought out a lot into the book to interact with Calico and the raw-hide kid is in the book which is beautiful kismet because the trial at the end of April on Grimalkin Lane is all about the raw-hide kid who is Marvel's
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: This is interesting, and I think we can start our discussion here.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_02]: Gail Simone is a writer who did some really edgy things actually, but you have to respect her for the different types of style that she does.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_02]: She's written a lot of different kinds of books.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_02]: And the more I delve into her world, the more I realize the variety and the humor and the long-term planning that she will put into things.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: But in early 2000s, we've talked a lot about the 2002 era on my show a little bit.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_02]: This is Marvel's kind of era of like reality TV.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_02]: Jackass is on MTV at the time, and that's kind of the template for what's happening in a lot of the dead pool comics.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool being written in a jackass voice but by a female writer is a really interesting thing because there's a ton of sexual humor, there's fat jokes and fat shaming and women's panties being tossed around and all kinds of that style of humor but there's a lot of heart mixed into it.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: So, this is the era where Deadpool volume 2, which is the longer run that's been going since the mid-90s, where it started with Joe Kelly and the other writers have taken over it along the way, including Fabiani Siaza and Christopher Priest, etc.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_02]: The Galsamone closes out the book and then it becomes a book called Agent X. Deadpool disappears at the end of the book with his mind wiped, and Agent X is the new book that replaces that.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: and he doesn't have access to his previous memories, and then later on you learn it's not deadpool and some other things happen to deadpool.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_02]: So Outlaw, or Inaz Temple, shows up at the end of the deadpool run and then melds into the Agent X series, where there's a lot happening.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_02]: And we're going to keep our conversation about her early history focused on the Agent X.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_02]: Excuse me, focus on Outlaw specifically, and not all of the other crazy nonsense, or Jackass level humor that's going on in the book at the time.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan, do you have any thoughts on this kind of era of storytelling in the early 2000s?
- 5:21[SPEAKER_02]: Where everything was just kind of borat on the page.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: I am one of the people who loves Gale Simone's writing.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: Agent X was a delight to read.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: It was obviously a delight to read even after the after that gave me some nostalgia flashbacks.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: I will say about, you know, as is out there and forward sexuality, it doesn't feel as though she is being presented it for a as a as wish fulfillment for a male audience as much as it does that she the character is allowed to be
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: It is distinctly something that she wants to do.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_02]: Excel, did you see a little bit of yourself in Ina's temple?
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I saw more of women that I used to work with that like bars and restaurants.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, when the patrons have gone home, just kind of like the like rough and tumble type of crowd.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_02]: One, one, kinky girl do another.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: She's fun.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: She's I mean because you find out she's like she's a little gross.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: She's like I'll like down to clown.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: She's like down to knock boots, but she just she like you said She has a lot of heart.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_02]: I love the name Outlaw as her codename and I love that her name is Inaz Inaz Temple is a beautiful name like if if that's a name you hear leading a series is like the lead character Like that's a name you don't forget.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_02]: I really I really love her name at her codename
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan, do you want to talk a little about her signature look?
- 6:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of just one hit through the whole thing, and there's not a lot to it.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: It is extremely to receive revealing.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: She, yes, like as she is, definitely putting her sexuality forward.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: She makes sure that other people seize what she wants them to see and what she wants them to see is usually quite a bit.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: But she's always got that Western look, that Western artifice about her.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think that's one of the more interesting parts about things about her is that a lot of like a lot of the way she dresses a lot of her her western aesthetic.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's something that she feels, you know, deep in her heart, it's part of her, but it's also a very very consciously created image.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: She puts a lot of effort into appearing exactly as she wants it.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: wants to.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think we find out, I think, in Agent X, that her hair isn't even her real hair.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: She's naturally has shorter hair of a different color.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: So everything she appears as is we are made to be sure that it is extremely deliberate.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_02]: Superhero costumes are always just drag and she has a full pig tail wig that she loves to wear most of the time.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_02]: With the name like I know, you would almost expect her to be Hispanic.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: As far as we know, she's just a white girl.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, she's blonde, especially with the wig, maybe a little burnout underneath.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_02]: But she loves a revealing outfit.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_02]: She's got her her cowboy hat.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: She usually has a belt on with some guns.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, usually very, very tiny shorts that are just enough to cover her ass.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_02]: I saw this girl at the airport the other day who's like lower ass cheeks were like out of her shorts and I'm like, oh, this is something I know as Woodware, this is one of my thoughts.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: She likes to wear very skimpy, I mean her top is basically just kind of a bra or a halter.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe some chaps, sometimes she gets some jeans or some longer hair, but it's the wig in the cowboy hat and then the six shooters.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: And her mutant power is basically she-hole.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_02]: Like, she's a super strong girl who has a ton of strength and resilience.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_02]: And that's kind of her whole thing.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_02]: So we see characters like frenzy who have this type of power set.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: Where it's the super strength that seems very much determined by her kind of own will.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_02]: I do want to spend just a minute and we're going to go longer into this in my raw-eyed kid trial, but if we go back to classic Hollywood Western tropes, the Wild West becomes like a whole playable land, where we have such an enormous genre of American fiction, and movies, television shows, Broadway musicals, music, and every genre you can think about including comics.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_02]: And in the midst of that, we love to play with gender.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to talk about this with raw-eyed kid who's a little bit more of an
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: of the girl who's a little bit butch.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_02]: Women are supposed to wear dresses and petticoats and they're either you know miskitty at the saloon or the good wholesome you know virgin who's waiting for the cowboy or like the harsh school marm which is kind of an interesting thing.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's like maiden mother crowing in the old west.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_02]: But we have people like Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane, who become kind of legends because they're women who defy.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: They still have to be a little bit feminine, but they ride horses and they can wrestle with the guys and they have their own sense of justice.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_02]: We have full Broadway musicals written about some of these women, where they're like a
- 9:58[SPEAKER_02]: little bit butch but they're also just waiting to meet the right man as kind of the energy.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you guys have any thoughts on that kind of template of the slightly gender-bending cowboy or cowgirl energy from classic Hollywood.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: I know
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: that at one point, Domino calls her Dale Evans, who I had to look up, who was the married to Roy Rogers.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that was kind of funny because it was in a bar fight with her like basically when they first meet and we'll get into that later on.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: But they're just kind of like taking pot shots at each other.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: So calling her Dale Evans, who is I think very like feminized country western woman, is a good shot at her because she is like much more of a tumble
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: style character and wants to live up more to the like the outlaw kid and the raw hi kid and those types of things rather than something a bit more feminine.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: And we're going to think of like Bernadette Peters as Annie Oakley, right?
- 10:52[SPEAKER_02]: But I think I mean, I guess Temple is going to be played more by like Margot Robbie in the movies.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_02]: Like she's gorgeous.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: She's a beautiful girl.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: Westerns are, genre, I don't have very much experience with, so I came into this character kind of with rough with fresh eyes, stepping into it without too much awareness of the archetypes outside of, you know, like, what do you just pick up from Osmosis in popular cultural
- 11:21[SPEAKER_02]: So Outlaw has a lot of appearances, most of them by Gale Simone.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's a rare for a writer outside of Gale to pick her up, but you can tell this is one of Gale's very favorite characters to use.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I've met Gale several times, Gale doesn't like doing podcasts.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_02]: I'm unlikely to get her on the show, but I do want to ask her what her relationship with, like horses and westerns is because she loves, she loves a cowgirl, which I love about her.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: So we're gonna, I'm gonna cover the early stuff a little bit quickly.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_02]: Outlaw first shows up in Deadpool, volume two, number 65.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's Gelsamone working with the artist, the Yudon, it's 2002.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_02]: Now Deadpool in this run has accidentally assassinated a bunch of Asian crime lords, and so his cred goes way up.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: And he launches Deadpool Inc. And he's hired a secretary named Sandy Brandenberg, who becomes a really big character in his life.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_02]: She deserves her own episode sometime.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: She's a non-powered secretary who worked for the taskmaster, and she ends up falling in love with Deadpool.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_02]: There's a little bit of love triangle stuff between Outlaw, Deadpool, and Sandi down in the Agent X era a little bit later.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_02]: But now we, he Deadpool's hanging out with Merck's more frequently.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_02]: And we first meet in an Inaz temple, sitting at the killer juice bar in a low cut, cow hide vest, short shorts and belt.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_02]: She almost looks like Lara Croft Tomb Raider.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_02]: She's got a cowboy hat and her boots with spurs.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_02]: And Deadpool says, what are you?
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: She and I at Twain's evil sister.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_02]: And she goes, says Mr. Freep Smoothie, which seems to be insulting his masculinity a little bit.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_02]: She calls him microscopically interesting, and he throws a gym towel in her face.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, we don't see her again until issue 67, where she is in like brown panties under her chaps.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_02]: It's a very, very slutty outfit.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_02]: If I still someone in this at a gay club, I think, oh, this is a little too much.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: And she introduces herself as, as outlaw for the first time.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_02]: And Wade says he's heard of her as crazy Ina's and she draws a gun.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_02]: She does not like being called crazy Ina's.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: Remember that because we're gonna see that gag a whole bunch of times with this character.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_02]: She flirts with Wade, she pinches his ass and then she heads off on a Merc job.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_02]: So this is a sluddy, powerful woman who's not afraid to flirt with men.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: We now move over to the Agent X series.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_02]: I introduced this a little earlier, the Mnesiac Agent X, who is not Deadpool, shows up, and Outlaw does a marksmanship test with him and figures out he's not Deadpool.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_02]: In number two, she makes the cover of the book with a big old gun for the first time, and she's participating in a scavenger hunt for mercenaries, which include characters like the scalpel and B1, and Agent X is here, and the mercenaries have been offered a quarter million dollars if someone can steal the Punisher's signature guns.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: A fight breaks out out like it's to rope one of the murks.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_02]: So we get a little lary at last so action.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_02]: And she spars with H&X.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_02]: Don't ever touch a Texas girl's gun, she says.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: And this is where we learn she's super strong for the first time.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: She ends up going out with H&X for a beer at the cowboy bar.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_02]: I know this seems silly.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_02]: Most of these boys I've never been out of the city.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_02]: Let alone been in a saddle.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: But coming here makes me a little less lonesome for home.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_02]: She dances, she takes Agent X back to her place, and they fuck, but she doesn't want to kiss him on the mouth.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_02]: Pretty woman style, at least not yet.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_02]: So this woman will fuck, but not love, at least, at least on the first encounter.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_02]: She wants him to kiss her, where she's been wounded during the fight.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_02]: So like, kiss me in my bullet wound, which is a little kinky.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_02]: And it turns out her pig tails are a wig.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_02]: She has short blonde hair underneath.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_02]: The next morning, she makes him a breakfast with homemade salsa.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: I like a man who eats lack of pig and sleeps lack of horse.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_02]: They go after the Punisher again, and he gets the drop on them, and she gets to say things like, Barry with, uh, Barry with me with my spurs on's all eyes, uh, Punisher leaves them both naked in a phone booth at the end of this fight, and then it goes after the people who hired them in the first place.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're not already in love with this character a little bit, she's pinching asses.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_02]: In issue three, Sandy Bragg, Brandon Berg picks up on Alex, who's Agent X picks the Alex in and as up from the phone booth, gives them some clothes.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_02]: Agent X gets in and gets in a fight while wearing a shirt that says sexy mama and task masters here.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_02]: Sandy says, I wish they just tongue kiss and get it over with and outlust as a
- 15:20[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, I don't think Alex rides side-saddle girl.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: Sadie says, you did not, meaning, did you fuck him?
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I know he says, get it up!
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so now outlast fully in this insane world of agent decks.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_02]: Who's powers are increasing and he can't remember his past.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_02]: And he lives in a theme park with a bunch of animals.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_02]: And they fight the Yakuza, and they take a job to protect an ugly,
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: rule restored outlaw gets shot but she's fine and she eats a bunch of hot dogs one time and there's a weird woman named Mary Z Zero who's like a mutant who gets forgotten when you don't look at her remember remember that guy with the superpowers from the x-force comics this is the the precursor for that
- 15:56[SPEAKER_02]: And she kisses Alex on the mouth, and issue five outlaw joins Agent X, Taskmaster and Sandy, to fight the four wins criminal organization.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_02]: And issue six, she kisses Alex again.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: Tells him to protect his private parts during a shootout because she has plans for him later.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_02]: And then they get in a high noon showdown with Crossfire, the old Hawkeye villain.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: She gets shot on the leg, but she shoots him in his mechanical eye.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_02]: There's a bunch of assassins running around.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_02]: And issue seven, Agent X goes on a panty rating assignment.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_02]: involving some uncomfortable topics.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_02]: You can go read it if you'd like.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_02]: It's very early 2000s and later tries making agent agency ex formal.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_02]: But Outlaw makes the announcement that she has to go back to Texas because her daddy's sick.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_02]: And Tristan's gonna pick up a little bit on this and she's me in there book.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: This is an excellent plot line that you fold in to your story with outlaw later.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_02]: Alex is surprised.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, I thought we were a couple and she sheds one single tier.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_02]: She's like, don't make this any harder than it has to be.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_02]: And then while she's gone over the next several issues, he hooks up and falls in love with Sandy.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_02]: So by the time we get to issue 14, we then go to Harlinggan United Methodist Church in a remote Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_02]: She's in a black dress, and she's laying her father or a rest, he's died.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_02]: And she has memories of getting into fights with boys like Billy Rappner, who called her crazy eyes because she had a temper, and also they called her immunity.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_02]: A crazy, muty, back-toothed freak.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_02]: and she says here people are always calling me names.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: I hate that.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_02]: I hate them.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: I know as you can't keep doing this it's unlady like I know I want though and he says that's my girl so it's like one of her last conversations to her dad and dad dies and she leaves Texas but when she gets back
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: She learns that Alex and Sandy are now in a relationship.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_02]: Issue 15, Outlaw intervenes in a big fight between Black Swan, Deadpool, and Agent X.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: And she makes it to make sure to comment on, like, you left me for this other girl.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: And he's just told Sandy he loves her, but Alex is like, it's not a big deal at anyway.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_02]: Outlaw gets some really kick-ass moments in the fight when Black Swan calls her crazy Inaz.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: And she shoots him a whole bunch of times.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_02]: And Deadpool wonders aloud if you could have fucked Outlaw,
- 18:00[SPEAKER_02]: outlaw and task master officially join agency x and then the book gets canceled.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: So it lasted 15 issues and that's our early history on outlaw.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot to love about this character.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan, what stands out to you as what makes this character unique or things that you love about her as we review that part kind of quickly?
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: Well, kind of like I was talking about with her focus on her appearance and making sure that she appears exactly the way she wants to.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's very funny that she kind of makes fun of her perks at other characters for appearing in ways that she thinks are like our false.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like calling on like Mr. Fruitsmoody.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's this really interesting contradiction where she focuses a lot on her appearance, but only to the extent that her appearance draws out something that the home or her identity that she feels that she is.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: She's accentuating that she's not dressing up as much as she is crafting and honing her appearance to reflect kind of person that she feels like she is on the inside.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_02]: She feels like a character that belongs in the X-Men.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: She's giving a lot of rogue.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_02]: She's got that stuff exterior, but like that heart of gold and vulnerability underneath.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, this feels like Rambo Rauh writing, she Hulk.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_02]: Like, there's a lot to love about this character.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_02]: She's very sex-positive and like very forward with who she is.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_02]: But also, she gets her ass kicked and is like, kiss my bullet hole.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: And she, the narrative plays the, the not liking to be called crazy hyenas as a, like as a gag a few times, but I think it's it's important and very X-Men book like that she never plays it as a gag she always takes it as a deadly serious insult.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: It is kind of it is kind of a name.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's a name that's followed her around for a while and she treats it almost like being called it like being called a new she's called the same things the same thing at both times in the past it she reacts to it like a slur.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes we'll see characters like Daredevil for example, he chose that name because the childhood bully called him Daredevil and he's like wants to reclaim it.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: She did not choose that as her name.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_02]: She chose Outlaw.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: She does not like that name.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_02]: She does not like bullies, but also this woman's not a superhero.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_02]: She's a mercenary and that's something that you got to keep in mind too.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_02]: She's very careful with who she's loyal to and her dad was the top of that food chain for that.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: You know, any other relationship and vulnerability, but she's genuinely hurt as well when
- 20:30[SPEAKER_02]: Alex moves on with Sandy so what was it like for you jumping into this world of like Deadpool and Agent X I'm assuming this was kind of new territory for you.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: It was new territory for me I had not read H and X like on the cover it just wasn't something that really spoke to me and it it also
- 20:45[SPEAKER_01]: So one me over, I really, I found myself really enjoying it and really enjoying this character and interactions, and especially outlaw.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: I know I was reading for her, but I think she would have stuck out anyways, just because she's a lot of fun.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: I have it in my notes that she's kind of a Gilmore girl S, with like because she, like she's very quippy, she's kind of playing her own game.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's not even that she can hang with Deadpool or H&X and they're equipping that she's like playing her own game that kind of Complments and coincides with theirs and she also eats like a Gilmour girl like she's like she sneaks out and she's like I'll give me like five of those hot dogs.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, oh, what's the slimy stuff?
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: She's like a little gross And then she I think in at another point like she's at a diner and she's like she's like basically like holding a bullet wound And she's like I'll take five of the specials, please
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: and it's really great.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_01]: She's just like the temper that you mentioned with her being called crazy A&A as we see that later on in other things too where she I feel like a lot of times the like I love my daddy and I love Texas kind of thing feels a little performative from a lot of people but for her feels very very much who she is or at least who she's chosen to be and she defends that and she even if what she's getting mad at is a choice like she has a choice to
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: get angry at something.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: She still has this temper and she's like this is I'm gonna let it out.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like the people who do this deserve for me to let my temper out on them.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_01]: So that's gonna be my healthy outlet.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: Now help me for then help even me.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_02]: One of my favorite things about gale someone writing.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I've read a lot of gale someone stuff lately.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_02]: For the first time in some ways these are my first time visiting a lot of these books at least in years.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: I love gale's quippy dialogue.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_02]: Where it's something in the gunfight and outlaw turns to H&X and is like, hey don't get shot on the penis because we're
- 22:20[SPEAKER_02]: Or when Sandy's like, I wish they'd tongue kiss and she's like, I don't think he read Side Saddle, like I love that kind of dialogue very much and gale so good at building that.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan, I can also see where you got a lot of the characteristics that you grew to love and explore in your character where she's going home to Texas in your book and kind of figuring out where her roots and her vulnerabilities a little bit.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_02]: So you really latched on to some of those character moments I can tell.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was especially fun taking her back to Texas because most of where we see her and then the stories that I've read is far outside of it.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: She's in New York.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: She's home.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_00]: She's kind of out.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: She's out of her element and going to places like that bar that remind her of home even if she knows that there's a lot of artifacts in it.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's something close to it.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_02]: So early 2000s we've also talked about it on the show a little bit where the body count really high.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_02]: This is an era where there's gratuitous violence everywhere.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_02]: Genocia has happened.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_02]: We're millions of
- 23:14[SPEAKER_02]: We see like a cover of a book where it's like a gay hate crime, like on the page, like the cover of an X-Men book is like a kid that's been nailed to a cross.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_02]: You don't have you like there's a lot of that kind of stuff going on.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_02]: If you want more interesting thoughts on that, go look at my interview with Jeff Jensen about his series X-Men, or X-Factor volume two, which really plays a lot of those like violent tropes from the early 2000s.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_02]: So after Agent X has canceled, I, Inaz ends up on one of those like handbook level lists,
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: of all the mutants in the world lost their powers, here's M-Day, but there's only 200 left and she's one of them.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_02]: So we get to see her in this kind of next era living in the world of the X-Men for a ton of the only time.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_02]: Excel, do you want to walk us through this era of outlaws history?
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: So it says like X-Men 179 and then it leads into a title called the 1998 and then it leads into civil war.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_01]: X-Men which kind of, I didn't really realize this before I started to read them,
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: So in Xman 179 we shoot we see her this is right after decimacy decimation She is showing up to the Xavier Institute because she has heard that it is a safe haven from mutants and Absolutely delighted to see that she shows up with paper who I just I let like I can't see him and not see the panel of McNeed or just going
- 24:30[SPEAKER_02]: Like I'm the the zord station in the craco and era one of one of my top favorite episodes I've ever recorded Alicia Wilder and I got high and did a peepers episode for like two hours We got you over this character.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_02]: I love him.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_01]: I love that episode too.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: It was a it was a lot of fun I really really enjoy him so they briefly fight the leopard queen who's like running away and then so that leads into the 198 where the
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: Xavier Institute has been kind of turned into basically an internment camp for mutants at this point run by Valerie Cooper and one the like office of national emergency and they have these big signals in the yard and it's called the 198 because there's a says really 198 mutants left and then I think it's Erz Erg with the most more luck from the more luck's yeah
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it says it's 1.98 because the Hell's Angels back in the 40s, they were like only 1% of bikers caused problems so the Hell's Angels put like a 1% bad ad or like patch on them and so it's kind of like a a call back to that and inviting like I think Emma says like they're like inviting violence in but they're also being kind of put in an internment case.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_01]: So we basically see like Atlas not a huge part of the story, but she is one of the background members that gets lines and gets to do stuff.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_01]: So we just kind of see her as part of the the mutants that are there.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: So like Amara magma shows up and she's pretty distraught that's where we meet Johnny D who is one of the bad guys essentially in this story.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: He's this dude with
- 26:04[SPEAKER_02]: Johnny, do you picture like one of the characters from the outsiders?
- 26:08[SPEAKER_02]: He's like a hot guy on a leather jacket, but like when he opens his jacket, there's like a full monster face that like eats DNA and spits out little baby eggs.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: And the egg can't like any version of that.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_02]: And when Johnny holds the egg he can control the actions of the person who's DNA made the egg.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_02]: He's giving birth to like little sweat babies.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_02]: He's so gross.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: He does that horror story.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and he doesn't like almost compulsively.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: He's like always like give me that DNA.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_02]: So we'll talk more about this in a moment.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_02]: But you'll be delighted to know that Tristan made Johnny D. The villain in the outlaw book that they wrote later.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: fantastic because yeah, he's got, I mean, it's such a hard power to overcome.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like when you can kind of take control of you.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: But so she greets Outlaw Greets Amara.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: They end up bunking with skids.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like those three, which I would love to see more of that interaction.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think that'd be a lot of fun.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: but so they kind of go through the some of the mutants start a riot to try to break out because they want to leave and they're told no that they can't leave and then the enigmatic Mr. M shows up which I had not also had not read much of him and he's this a mega level reality warfare comes everything down
- 27:20[SPEAKER_02]: Mr. M's kind of an odd guy.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_02]: He's from the district X series, and he's in a mega mutant, but he kind of is like a, he's a little off-kilter with realities, like an unhoused guy who has some weird moments.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_02]: He falls in love with Laura Leitravis, who's like the stripper with the Medusa hair that she can control.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_02]: If you've read like Tini Howard's Excalibur,
- 27:42[SPEAKER_02]: Mr. M ends up in other world in that series, and it's kind of behind the scenes, but they've now like merged him with the siege perilous.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_02]: Like the crystal that the X-Men passed through, Mr. M has like a whole realm in other world where like the siege perilous has become his realm that he's occupied.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's a crazy thing.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_02]: So, absolute McBercader is his name, and this is what makes the 180 it crazy.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_02]: Is it like these random mutants from all these different titles and eras mixed together in a book at an internment camp with fucking sentinals watching over them, you know?
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: But it's wild and that good for Mr. M for having his whole little universe in there.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: But I knew him from the like the data page and the cracoinera of like the omega level immune.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, who is this?
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: I had to like go back and look it up.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: But basically, Val Cooper who was kind of like heading up one for the most part, along with general laser, which is quite a name.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_02]: Not to be confused with Molly laser, frequent guest on Grey Malkin Lane.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: They, the mutants want to be able to go out and leave.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: Thal says, you can go, you just have to get this microchip in you.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: So outlaws, one of the mutants that likes to have the chip in, they go out.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_01]: They find out that the chips have an electric shock in them.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: So if you get like out of line, they can shock you.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think it happens to memo max because memo max is part of this.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_01]: The big elephant mutant, they all freak out rightly so and find out that this mutant jazz, who's blue skin, who has seen Johnny D at work, he's seen his powers working, so he becomes a liability and Johnny D takes this opportunity to snap his little tiny election figure neck, which snaps his neck and real life.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_02]: It's the Hududal trope, yeah.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then everybody thinks like, oh, this is the microchips like they killed us try to start another riot and then Mr. M shows up and takes all of the microchips out of them before he does this out log gets like a line in and she's like,
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: yelling directly at Scott at Cyclops saying like you know like take them out Summers and so Mr.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting them out of them and then leads them on an Exodus to a tiny island nearby where Johnny D. has made a deal with Mr. Laser.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: I keep why I call him like major laser or Mr. Laser.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's general laser.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_01]: He makes a deal with him and then gets all of the mutants to kind of like turn on Mr. M and kill him or so it seems.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: and they all kind of go back to the camp at Xavier Institute with their tail between their legs and we find out that Mr. M is not really dead.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: He just becomes butterflies at this point.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: But so like Atlas just in in all that like she's got like lines here and there but she's like kind of I think I don't know if I
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: David Heine is the writer.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think maybe he just liked her a lot.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: She's got a really good silhouette as far as like a recognizable character.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: She's really fun to throw in there.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: And she's really outspoken.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: This leads into a civil war, which is, you know, the era where Iron Man and Captain America are fighting over the superhero registration act, and they need to do something with the X-Men for an X-Men book.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: So they continue this story where Domino and Cheddar
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: a bunch of the 98 out of the camp at Xavier's and leads them to a bunker that we find out later is was built by 20 Stark used to house weapons of mass destruction.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: The original 05 except for Jean go try to go after them.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: Bishop works with Iron Man and all the other civil war folks because cops gonna cop.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: I guess with Bishop again, Atlas just kind of like one of the units as part of the
- 31:08[SPEAKER_01]: There's a fight that breaks out initially at the bunker because Bishop shows up along with Sabra and Micromax, like making the situation even worse.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: It just just by their presence.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then Cyclops gets controlled by Johnny D, who is still working with General Fiper and powers up Bishop and Bishop shoots a big power-up laser to the sky.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: Essentially what happens is
- 31:32[SPEAKER_01]: shuts down general lasers partnership with Johnny T. There's a truce.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: And then they find out, oh no, the check-offs weapons of mass destruction are gonna go off And there's no way to get the mutants out of the bunker because Tony designed it to be impregnable.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: So they need to try to pregnant it.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: I guess
- 31:50[SPEAKER_01]: Outlaw is part of the mutants that are trapped inside.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: She's doing a lot of like the like the grunt work like she's like trying to like fix them out or she's trying to like go over here and and help this person she gets controlled at one point by Johnny D and then towed kind of like grapples her and then when she comes to she's like you better have a good reason for this motor motor motor torque to and be I can never say his name properly like
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: towards me.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: I always mess with that, but then they by the mutant circuit that Cyclops and Bishop had done earlier, they're able to free them and they escape.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: All of the mutants including Outlaw are granted to Amnesty.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_01]: They go back to the what is now a basically preservation on the Xavier Institute.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: They're allowed to come and go pretty much as they choose.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_01]: They're still sent and they'll stay there.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: But that's kind of the the last we see
- 32:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm having a hard time just like everybody else, but she's doing her best to make sure everybody's taken care of.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of eras of like disenfranchised populations and you know, X men is like an allegory for minority politics.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_02]: In this era where they're literally an endangered species who have just suffered like a magic genocide, if you will, they're rushing to safety with no assistance.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_02]: And when outlaw that first scene in X men were outlaws running with like man and Max and Peepers,
- 33:15[SPEAKER_02]: and there's literally a group of hate primers who have got an irks there, right?
- 33:20[SPEAKER_02]: They've got those crosses that they're ready to capture the mutants and burn them alive within sight of the internment camp that they were trying to get to safety toward.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_02]: Meanwhile, Valerie Cooper's plan
- 33:31[SPEAKER_02]: is let's make everyone stay in this camp.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_02]: We'll microchip them and get them watched over by like human piloted sentinals, which are like the items that were just used in Operation Zero Tolerance to hunt and kill mutants a few years before.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_02]: These are wild stories where Mr. M represents the kind of bohemian idea of what it means to escape all of that.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: But meanwhile, the X-Men who still have their powers are sleeping and
- 33:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's crazy.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you ever have a chance, let's look at the cover of the book.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: I can see Johnny D's tentacles just wavering there in the background.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so this was one of the only parts of the initial civil war run that I read and really, really digged.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_02]: Eric, Johnny D. Fuckable?
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: I... Good, Kali.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, like, knowing about him, no.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_01]: Knowing my history initially, I'd be probably be intrigued, not knowing anything about him, but then, yeah, my better senses would take over when I'm like, oh, these control, like, people.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I'm just going to see there are multiple options for oral sex with this guy.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_01]: like what those tentacles do is a question.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: But there's a creepy little face in the middle of that.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what I'm saying with the world's episode.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_02]: That's the next episode.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_00]: And there are all sorts of kinky possibilities with the little dolls that exist too, the control or your actual actions.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_00]: If he just had a different personality, there's so much more fun you could have with those.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_02]: I truly want to do a very kinky Johnny D episode one day.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_02]: One of those episodes of my show that like make my more vanilla listeners just a little bit uncomfortable with some things.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's getting
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think we mentioned the tentacles, the tentacles all over the place.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think this actually wraps back to Inaz a little bit because there's a, I think it might be later.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_01]: I forget exactly where this is, but their at one point Deadpool is very tiny and she has like a moment of like, well, what if he stays tiny, I wonder what we could do with them and which like kind of goes back to Johnny these tiny little people.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_02]: So, her as the girl who doesn't have a family, who's now living in this internment camp and trying to form bonds, and she's the Merc, but she's being hunted for who she is.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot happening for her here.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_02]: Now, Fibia Nise as it gets his 50-issue cable-indead pull series, which I don't know if people realize it's 50 issues, but it's pretty top quality all the way through.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's pretty excellent.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_02]: He gets to play with the mythos of both characters.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_02]: In cable and Deadpool 38, agent X, and the members of agency X are there.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: And Deadpool visits their agency and stares it outlaw on Sandy's boobs a lot.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_02]: And then his like enemy T-ray attacks.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_02]: And T-ray might be their real weight Wilson and he's the magic guy.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_02]: He's got like a band-aid on his nose.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_02]: It's a whole Joe Kelly character.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_02]: In 39 Deadpool saves them in 40 outlaw place strip poker with sandy dead pool agent X and Bob agent of Hydra And when she loses a hand she has to take her top off and then an issue 50 she gets to help fight some symbiote dinosaurs so
- 36:37[SPEAKER_02]: You know, she's back with her found family and her emergency in this series.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: And then we also get to see her in the series Deadpool suicide kings.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_02]: This is a five-issue limited series.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of those weird ones that you probably haven't read.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool in this series shows up at Outlaw's House and she's wearing skimpy panties and a tight shirt that says giants on it over her boobs and her boobs are enormous.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_02]: If Gail Simone was writing this, I'd feel a little different.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_02]: When would it would?
- 37:04[SPEAKER_02]: When it's a man riding this character, sometimes it's a little more uncomfortable.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_02]: Her hair's short here, so no, no wig.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool is concussed, and he pictures Inaz as BR-3, who's always his top love, Dorothy from the Golden Girls.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: And when she asks, and how you feel, and he says, crazy comma Inaz, and she is not pleased.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: So he's answering the question with her name after, but this is Deadpool.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_02]: You have to assume it is, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it
- 37:30[SPEAKER_02]: like on purpose.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_02]: So she has an appointment for a bikini wax, but she offers to do it with his sword.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_02]: And then she references that she has a boyfriend that she met on AshleyMadison.com, which is like that place that married men go to like pay women to cheat on their wives.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_02]: She pinches his ass before heading out and then she leaves him alone in her apartment.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool hijinks happen and then the whole apartment gets destroyed.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: So when she comes back later, deadpool's found her a new place and he immediately calls her crazy Inaz again and she punches him in the jaw.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_02]: Someone's after Amy breaks her window and she says she's in her brand new apartment.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_02]: Christ on a bike, you could have just opened it, which Christ on a bike is an amazing epithet.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_02]: I prefer Christ on a cracker by self.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_02]: your preference.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_02]: In the end, he does get her the new apartment he furnishes it and then she has sex with that pool, canotically, as a thank you.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_02]: This series makes me a little more uncomfortable.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_02]: Do either of you have thoughts on her appearances in cable dead pool or in suicide kings?
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: I remember reading this, these ones was part of my research for a while ago, but these
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, into my memory of a little bit was it in reason of one of these that she got tied up by the villain doesn't if I remember incorrectly or was that's her and Sandy get tied to a chair or two chairs back to back.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think that was DCA's are writing DCA's are rights them with a little more care than Mike Benson and suicide kings, but just.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a lot to mine there if you want to go back to any of that because when after like cable dies shortly before or kind of dies, presumably before the end of cable and deadpool, so it kind of becomes this like almost like this buddy cop thing with the
- 39:17[SPEAKER_01]: character switching out for cable paired up with Deadpool.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_01]: So she gets to meet like doctor strange with the fantastic forward like she's invited to play cards with Ben Grimm.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like she just gets to meet a bunch of the Marvel Universe that I don't think she would have met previously.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of relationships to mind there if you ever want to go back and and write those with her.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then we come to the Utopia era.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_02]: The endangered species has formed its first island nation over off the coast of California.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_02]: And we do see her on Utopia in a couple of random appearances.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_02]: And then she gets one more big appearance in Deadpool volume four numbers 27.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_02]: This is Jerry Duggen writing, Deadpool is marrying the demon Shikla.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_02]: And in issue 27, the whole issue is like giant size.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a flashback to all of the other times that Deadpool got married.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_02]: So each story is an individual one.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: All of Deadpool's previous weddings that you never know
- 40:04[SPEAKER_02]: In one of them, he apparently married outlaw, and at their wedding are Captain America, Wolverine, Dup, Domino, and Squirrel Girl.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, they have a cake topper, so apparently it was very romantic.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_02]: I'm guessing they were very drunk.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_02]: The bride on the cake has a little cowboy hat.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool claims that they've waited until their honeymoon to fuck, which we know is not true, and Agent X is like Deadpool listen.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_02]: Outlaw has super strength.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_02]: So this is a running gag that like whenever she fucks Agent X or Deadpool, she breaks their pelvis during sex.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_02]: So so there are staying in a hotel called shrubs of mystery, and they go see the biggest ball of lard in North Dakota on their honeymoon.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_02]: and then they go to a rat world fun time family part and then they visit the world's biggest indoor septic tank and then right now attacks and outlaw knocks them out in one punch and then they get put into room number 69 at the hotel and they fuck one more time and by the way, this story is by Galsomode I always love where this is an aside of hours love when Deadpool and Skrillgurler are on the same page that they're kind of like matter and anti matter they can't really count it
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: They shouldn't exist in the same place at the same time.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_00]: They're the same kind of self-efectionate, marvel self-efectionate, parody characters.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan, there is a character in existence named Squirrel Pool, are you aware of this?
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: I am not.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna send you the link.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_02]: Squirrel Pool, Deadpool and Squirrel Girl have an adventure where their atoms get mixed up in a like blender and get spit out.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_02]: And like, here's the handbook profile.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_02]: I'll send you the link.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's Johnny D level of horrific.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_02]: Let me just get your library action to squirrel pool who we will talk about another time.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's the Deadpool squirrel girl child.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_02]: It's nice tea.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, not my favorite character, but please, please, please.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_00]: Well, now we know why they shouldn't meet so often.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_00]: This kind of thing happens.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, they're self parody characters, but intended for vastly different age groups.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_00]: So it's kind of like, I'm default when they appear together.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: It has to elevate to the highest level of age group and then we get things like this delightful abomination over here.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool has a way with women.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool has dated rogue.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool has dated siren.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool, there's something about this guy that women love.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, Outlaw, I think has some feelings for this character as crazy as he is.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think she likes a guy that can hold his own and a Merc fight is good with a gun, and she can break his pelvis with sex, like during sex.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_02]: She doesn't have to hold back.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_02]: So there's some things she's there.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: And to him, I just don't buy that.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_01]: She would marry him.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's the bad part.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like sleeping with him.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, what 100% I think she would.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, when you find somebody who's pelvis, you can safely break during sex.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you've got to hold them.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_02]: That's a very fair.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_02]: That's horrifying.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_02]: Like your foot so hard, your pelvis breaks.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_02]: Just wow, you know what outlaws' favorite position in bed has to be is reverse cowgirl, like you know what's true.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_02]: We do see her one in one panel in uncanny X-Men volume three, number 23, where she's in Mad Groupore, and then Galsamone is back again for her incredible series, 10-issue series featuring Domino.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_02]: We get 10 issues and annual and then the follow up hot shots limited series.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan, do you want to talk to us about the Domino series?
- 43:36[SPEAKER_02]: I love this book.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, this was amazing and I tried to take most of how I wrote for
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: So as an agent acts of laws and the title character, but she's a key team member, one of the first three members of luck power meetings down when I was posse along with Rachel Layton is Diamondback.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_00]: There are three different throughout these 10 issues.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: There are.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_00]: three different story line.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: But in the storyline of 1 through 6, Outlaw helps throw a surprise birthday party for Domino.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, of course, because it's a superhero comic, and therefore things aren't allowed to go smoothly, Domino is attacked by an enemy who's able to nullify Domino's elect powers.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: And she's tossed out of a skyscraper, happily saved by passing Spider-Man, which is seems to have been actually lucky lucky in not Domino's own superpower-based life.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: So we get into the, throughout the next few issues, we get into this, this classic story about a super hero abruptly divested of their powers and forced to learn how to get along without them.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_00]: But while Domino is, is training with Shin Chi, Outlaw and Diamondback are going out and investigating on their own, having their own little side adventure in which the,
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like someone is betraying Domino or passing information along to the enemy and they don't know if it might be one of them, they start to mutually suspect each other.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_00]: Then as we continue following Domino for a while, the person who attacked her is named Topaz who is working for a prototype who is another product of project Armageddon, which created Domino.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: which as bad as it was for Domino, it was worse for for this guy of prototype because it turns out that Domino is a lock power operates on a system like the equivalent exchange so whenever something good happens to to Domino something equally awful.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_00]: has to happen to this guy, which is a really sympathetic backstory, but it's two guys, two bad guys that this guy at his fellow travelers are still awful people, willing to hurt innocence, outlaw kills prototype, which re-empowers domino.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_00]: And what I think is the key outlaw moment of the story is when domino has one of the villains of the story at her mercy, even when the villain is following to pick back up and keep fighting,
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: Outlaw and Diamondback don't argue with Domino when Domino says she's going to kill them.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_00]: They just really want her to be sure that this is the right choice for Outlaw who just killed somebody herself is not certainly not above killing.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_00]: He cares very much about about Domino's well being and knows.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_00]: What the execution of this helpless person deeply tied up in Domino's past would do to Domino.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_00]: Domino makes the choice to kill Topaz anyway, but you can see the bonds of friendship caring.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_00]: You can see those starting to form.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_00]: an issue seven that opens a new story in which the posse is taken take an ownership of a casino riverboat, which seems extremely kind of like the like the thing that outlaw would more than any of the others would would push to do it's the kind of a somewhat crazy.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: but mostly fun the thing that defines our characters.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_00]: So they're approached by Wakamden Exile, Atlas Bear who employs them to recover a mysterious box that they shouldn't look inside.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: There's another nice character beat for them and here as well, when the mission sends them out into a snowy wilderness, because the gals like toys, they travel on these fantastic snowmobiles, cranking the engines and are just out,
- 47:24[SPEAKER_00]: just out having fun.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, box, they're after turns out to be linked to more vise, leads and leads up to, uh, show down with an underwater vampire king into the next key outlaw moment.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: When Outlaw in Diamondback on the, uh, um,
- 47:39[SPEAKER_00]: are on the edge of a beach and kind of gearing up in scuba gear and about about to embark on the mission that's one of Outlaw's first actual, you know, for the gut of the whole world and not personal profit superhero missions, she needs to build up some courage before going on to going on this deep sea diving expedition.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_00]: Deep sea diving is far from her comfort zone
- 48:07[SPEAKER_00]: who is a former villain, tells her that this might be the moment that they were waiting for a chance to make up for a lifetime of quote, not stepping up.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because just every time we've seen outlaw until this point, she's been a mercenary, she's been a merchant, she's done things for money and not for super heroics.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_00]: And this is the first time that we see her bonding with a team and doing things like for the good of the world without a problem,
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: Issues nine and ten.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think are less less outlaw focused.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_00]: We get atless there is back story.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: She's been encouraged She's fun.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: She's been cursed with prophetic visions of the end of the world and we'll go to extreme lengths to stop them Which caused her to be to be outlawed by or exiled excuse me from Wakanda
- 48:58[SPEAKER_02]: outlawed pun intended.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and they go on this mission to what to save or well, endless bare wants them to kill another luck-based hero, long shot.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: But Domino, Anthropocie, elect to try to save him and study that are even with risks to the world present.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_00]: They succeed in that as well as stopping the apocalypse, proving that Atlas bears visions are flawed,
- 49:28[SPEAKER_00]: joining the team.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_02]: The the really special part of this series for me lies not only in the beautiful art but this three it's it's giving very thumb and Louise energy there's a lot of like really beautiful moments between domino outlaw and diamond back outlaw is the like the marksman and the strength domino's the luck and diamond back which is a new thing for her character this is Captain America's little girlfriend she's like the explosives expert we get a lot of
- 49:54[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to run just through the series really quickly and point out some of my favorite outlaw moments throughout this, and just things that she says randomly, we need to issue one, she tells Domino, why not do yourself, oh, she's talking to a guy that they got, who becomes their chef, it's fine.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_02]: Why don't you do yourself a favor and shut your damn grunt hole,
- 50:10[SPEAKER_02]: So we get a lot of really cute moments.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_02]: We get to see her dressed up in this gorgeous white almost Elvis number.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_02]: And this is like a sleeveless white silk look that goes all the way down, cut to the navel, exposing her yellow broad.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_02]: She goes like a red necklace where they're having like a some fashion as they're celebrating Domino's party where like dazzler's showing up.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_02]: So the weirdly this is like the most integrated into the X men's world that she's ever been and Domino's really going through a lot of very vulnerable things in this series.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_02]: In issue two, when Domino's worried because like people had a party saw her in her bra on panties outlaw turns to her and says,
- 50:46[SPEAKER_02]: I reckon half the folks at that part have seen you buck-ass Nike before, and Domino's like, I don't know what to see me scared, so there's these cute moments of their friendship consistently.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_02]: They're out on a boat, she says, okay, let's saddle up, I'm ready.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_02]: As they're getting ready to head into the casino, issue number three has this gorgeous cover, which is very felman Louise, of Domino diamond back in Outlaw, like driving a car with
- 51:15[SPEAKER_00]: When you search for the series on Google, that's the cover that comes up most often and that's not an accident.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's a gorgeous cover.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_02]: The other one is issue seven where they're all out on the snow together.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's like the three of them posed in this like backdrop of snow.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_02]: In an issue four, we see her like trying to relax in a bathrobe.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_02]: She's got her full gear out underneath and they've got to go like saved ominous reputation in their friendship.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_02]: This is where they're ordering Chimichangas at the truck.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_02]: They get to meet Deadpool because there's a running Chimichanga gag for Deadpool who apparently thinks that's the most hilarious word Topaz breaks out last finger in one of their fights, but she's like very tough through that So she gets very easily defeated because Topaz can take her powers Domino comes out wearing her pajamas With a purple shirt that says my boyfriend was in X-Force and I like that was this lousy t-shirt They hold up this painting of like Domino and a sexy red dress and outlosses
- 52:12[SPEAKER_02]: holy cats, I'm so turned on right now.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like, throughout the story, I just really love the dominoa, dominoa and outlaws friendship.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, time and back as well.
- 52:27[SPEAKER_00]: Can definitely tell that you can tell early on that they're bound to be best friends because they have the traditional superhero meeting way back in the civil war comic outlaw at one point ends up holding a revolver to dominoa's face.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_02]: Outlaw also gets to read a jet ski in the snow.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_02]: She's not dressed for it at all.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_02]: And she goes, whoa, I said, whoa, you nag in the jet, not a jet sea.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's who S.No will be.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_02]: And the snow will be all crashes.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_02]: And it's very bugs bunny.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_02]: Like, only her feet are sticking up out of the snow with full cowboy boots on.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_02]: She goes, ah, I broke my hind.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_02]: She also calls Domino peaches through this series, which is really cute.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_02]: Like, height peaches.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_00]: I did pick that up specifically for for for for the book side.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right, the peaches.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, some moments where she really gets to kick ass.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_02]: She gets to fight these like undead vampires and like really smash them up in that issue.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_02]: And then we get maybe the best and weirdest moment of all in issue number 10, where she gets to punch out Atlas barren says,
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I had read parts of it as it was coming out, but I don't think I kept up with it.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_01]: So it was fun to go back and revisit it.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I just let, part of this feels with them going to different climates and putting on different outfits.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: If you were collecting action figures in the 90s, there were always like Batman, Arctic year.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_01]: They even did it with cable.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like cable, Arctic year, space suit, or something.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_01]: They're like never really appeared in the comics, and I feel like this is
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's playing like direct homage to that, but it feels a little bit like, oh, let's see what kind of outfits we can put these, these scales in because they're going to have a ton of fun, like the snow suit and stuff like that.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: So I feel like it really would lend itself well to some outlaw and domino and diamond back action figures, which would be great.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just think like the way that you mentioned Trishon her supporting Domino in her decision.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I always get frustrated when like the bad guy like obviously the right decision is to like take the bad guy out.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_01]: And they're like, no, no, like show that makes this as bad as them.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, no, this person wasn't going to stop.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_01]: You need to take them out and them showing their support for that decision.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think is good or beat like being a good friend.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_02]: Outlaw also gets to go to the Mojo verse and kick some weird gladiator ass and she's I'm gonna wipe your ass out hoots like every moment of this is deliciously written I was so sad when this series was canceled.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_02]: I loved this series as a reader We did get an annual though Eric you want to tell us about the nominal annual number one
- 54:53[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, sure.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_01]: Let me pull up my notes into that really fast.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_01]: So that in the annual it comes I think between like issues may be like seven and eight or six and seven like when the series is coming out.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's like three different stories that dive into different things that domino has been up to at one point or another and one of the main stories again.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_01]: I believe written by yel Simone is how outlaw and domino met.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_01]: and so it was her putting together a team with Diamondback and then they end up at the bar where Inaz is drinking and getting in the bar.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_02]: The name of the bar is the dirty Dave Saloon and Swaray Pavilion.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_01]: I missed that.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_01]: That's fantastic.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_01]: But so, and Domino is just like stepping in at every chance she gets.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_01]: She's insulting country music, kills the jukebox.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_01]: So she's like doing all the stuff and it's just like setting Ina's off again and again and again and again and they just they keep fighting.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_02]: So before Domino comes in the bar, Outlaw is drinking like a whole picture of beer at the table by herself and this guy comes in had in hand and he goes, excuse me Miss Temple.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_02]: I was just wondering if you'd do me the honor of allowing me to purchase you a cold beverage
- 56:02[SPEAKER_02]: That's real nice that you hand some, but I'm on duty and I'm about half plastered.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_02]: Next time, all right, he was next time, sure, freaking beauty.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_02]: And then she just throws a whole fucking piano out of him and knocks him out of the bar.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was a pool table.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it's, yeah, I guess it's a pool table.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_02]: It's excellent.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like, just like, yeah, it's just the silhouette of him being thrown out of the bar.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: And like, there's a pool table coming through that wall within.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_02]: Which is all the guys in the bar draw guns and knives.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_02]: And she goes, rock me daddy like a wagon wheel.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_01]: She's been to, like, I love how much this issue shows up for Temper, and she, like, literally just beats up the whole bar, which is great.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_01]: Domino tries to kick her at one point and doesn't realize, like, how strong she is, and she's like, ow, fuck.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that really hurt.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_01]: And then, this is where we find out that she is the descendant of the outlocked.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_01]: As far as I know, this is where we find that out.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so it doesn't say how she's descended, it's just the outlocked as an ancestor who is part of the whole crew of, like, the raw head kid, and I'm blanking on the other names at the moment.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_01]: but just kind of those like Western Marvel characters.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's where she takes her name from.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_01]: I love also that she says cotton, like I don't cotton of that.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_01]: Cause that's like the word that people use when I was very up, which I just really enjoy it.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_02]: When Ella throws a knife at Domino, Domino's luck kicks in and the knife overshoots her head and then cuts the cord to the jukebox.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, a lot like you broke the jukebox.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm gonna push you so good.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's over the top and it's so good, but it's believable like she's just like she's just trying to have a good time drinking this guy hits on her and calls her muti and then after she gets done fighting everybody these two women shows that she don't know and then they like start fighting They're like just start kind of insulting her on accident and she's like how I can't catch a break today, but then she ends up being one over and joining Dominos posse
- 57:50[SPEAKER_01]: which I think outlaw is the one that calls it a posse.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_01]: And just because it's fitting.
- 57:56[SPEAKER_02]: So let me ask you for just a moment.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_02]: There is the moment where we have to highlight this.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_02]: Outlaw has a gun pointed to Diamondback's head.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_02]: And Diamondback, they're trying to recruit her, right?
- 58:06[SPEAKER_02]: And she's drunk at the fighting.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_02]: She says, I have a herd of you.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_02]: You're outlaw, right?
- 58:09[SPEAKER_02]: Descendant of the outlight outlaw kid.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_02]: Also known as crazy Inaz, I think.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_02]: And she was lady don't call me that.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_02]: I don't cotton to it.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_02]: The Outlaw Kid is a character that appeared in a 1954 Marvel comic by Doug Wildley called the Outlaw Kid.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to be talking about some of these old 50s western comics in the raw-eyed kid trial.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_02]: The Outlaw Kid is not a frequently used cowboy.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_02]: We see a lot of cowboys that are used often, like the two gun kid or the Phantom writer.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_02]: The Outlaw Kid is pretty similar to another character called the Texas Kid in that both of them have the same name,
- 58:46[SPEAKER_02]: are Lance Temple, and she's Inaz Temple.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_02]: So their origins are also very similar.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_02]: If you look at the Texas Kid and the Outlaw Kid.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_02]: So they are, they're gun slingers, and their basic origins are like the, Lance Temple's the father of Zain Temple, a retired U.S. Marshall, and when Lance was still young, or excuse me, the son of Zain Temple, when it Lance was still young, and Outlaw killed his daddy, and the Outlaw Kid runs for a while,
- 59:12[SPEAKER_02]: he has like 37 appearances in the 1950s.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_02]: So Gail drawing this in is pretty great.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_02]: The only time we've seen him in the modern era is in uh the Ron Zimmerman uh raw-eyed kid series which is just downright offensive against a 200th ride control and then there's a really great series called Blaze of Glory which is a modern retelling of old stories and then we also see him in
- 59:39[SPEAKER_02]: But the fact that she's a descendant of an actual Marvel cowboy is an excellent part of this character.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_02]: And then they fight Professor Salvich.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that was so wonderful.
- 59:47[SPEAKER_01]: Unmemorable that I didn't even put up in my note.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_02]: Outside the bar, a man has re-incorporated a snow head into an armed military vehicle and he calls himself Professor Salvich.
- 59:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's really silly.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_01]: It reminded me of the Sentinel series, like the kid that works on and gets a Sentinel, like it reminded me of that, the way he had like kind of cobbled stuff together.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_01]: They just kind of, if I'm remembering this right, because like I said, I think I just blanked about you was at the end of that story.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_01]: they take them out really easily and then they're kind of like shown driving off together.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_02]: If I'm standing over here, this annual gets a full page shot of a cable and domino in a giant bathtub layfeld style and this is also where we get the Leo Williams like mutant support group for like mutants who have weird mutants.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_02]: a beautiful, full, full read, highly recommended.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_01]: I was not in those final two stories, so I didn't bring those up, but yeah, they're really good.
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's, we covered the third story when we talked about I-Boy, because I believe it's in that.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, yeah, that's right, I believe it's in that.
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_02]: And then we have Domino Hotshots, and this is the Supergirl team up.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_02]: We got Domino Diamondback, White Fox, Black Widow, Atlas Bear, and Outlaw, and it's not really an outlaw story, but it's fun.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_02]: a super strong cowgirl bounty hunter got a whole Texas thing says the caption they face off of the Russian scientist named Dr. Gavri Marzov who's been transformed by a celestial artifact called the creation constellation and when you touch it it makes you like get a God form so outlaw touches it an issue too she has like a sentinel form that like ever it's it's a whole thing Domino's reckoning with Godhood it's fine.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_02]: But the captions in issue 2 tell us about Outlaw.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_02]: She might have been the last hometown girl.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_02]: As a kid, she rode horses before she made her first mud pie.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_02]: She got her first French kiss in the back of a pickup truck under a punishing Texas sun to the sound of Hank Williams.
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_02]: Her wants were simple, her dreams were small, really.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_02]: Mainly, I know as Temple wanted to raise hell.
- 1:01:48[SPEAKER_02]: And it turned out she was good at that.
- 1:01:50[SPEAKER_02]: And she finally found something she didn't know she needed
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_02]: There's also that moment in the annual where she's like, I'll come work for you.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_02]: You got medical insurance and dental, like that's where their friendship starts.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_02]: Deadpool shows up here, we learn outlies from Harlandgan, Texas.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_02]: It's like population 312 real city, but in the real world, there's like 70,000 people there.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, we see her calling domino peaches.
- 1:02:12[SPEAKER_02]: She's calling people Philly.
- 1:02:14[SPEAKER_02]: She's saying things like Rekin and Yihod and Darm Tootin.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_02]: Domino at one point.
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_02]: She says that all Inaz wants in her life is quote, to get in fights, get drunk and get laid, which, you know, who among us?
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, some setnals get equipped with celestial tech here, out like it's to throw to giant size and punch setnals.
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_02]: So really fun series.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_02]: And then lastly, we see her on Krakawa very briefly.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_02]: She's in Deadpool 7 slotters battling a monster dog in the more locked tunnels, and then most recently in Uncanny X-Men, she's with Deadpool and Outlaw at a like children's hospital fire rescue.
- 1:02:50[SPEAKER_02]: This is Gelsavot and like the most modern space.
- 1:02:53[SPEAKER_02]: How are we feeling about Outlaw?
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_02]: How are what are I thoughts on this character?
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_02]: She's fucking great.
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_02]: I love her very much.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_00]: She's she's very special to me.
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_00]: One of the moments I will be, I will forever be proud of is Gelsomone, like it's something I will hold in my heart forever.
- 1:03:11[SPEAKER_02]: Did you hear from Gelsomone?
- 1:03:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_00]: What was that like?
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't hear from her own person, but via Twitter.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_00]: It was something we were Twitter followers, but one of the things I was most nervous about coming up to the release of the book actually was how she might react to it,
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_00]: That outlaw is very special to her.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_00]: That's something that she's said on multiple occasions.
- 1:03:35[SPEAKER_00]: And being under NDA, I can say anything about how I have this whole novel with her with her on the, was coming, was going to come out.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then that I was putting everything into it.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_00]: And when she found out that there was an outlaw book coming out, she was just like stunned surprise.
- 1:03:58[SPEAKER_00]: that she was able to get a hold of it moment I will never forget I will I will carry that happiness with me.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_02]: I've had a couple really long conversations with you and her husband.
- 1:04:07[SPEAKER_02]: She's the lovely person just like a really warm at the last uncanny experience Chris Claremont's been there a few times and like this is the graduation ceremony at the end of the weekend and
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_02]: Claremont handed out the diplomas for the first couple but Gail took over at the last one.
- 1:04:21[SPEAKER_02]: It was like the new headmaster of the school.
- 1:04:23[SPEAKER_02]: It was really beautiful.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_02]: She's a lovely person and outlaw you can tell is one of her top favorite characters.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_02]: So how are you feeling about this character?
- 1:04:31[SPEAKER_01]: I love her.
- 1:04:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean going in really not knowing anything about her kind of going like, I don't know about this character.
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_01]: but I love having the opportunity to dive in and find reasons to like something or find reasons to like a character.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_01]: I always have a hard time when somebody's like, who's your least favorite ex-men?
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I can't really answer that.
- 1:04:46[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the answer is Professor ex is the worst, but like, is he my least favorite?
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_01]: I just think that she's
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_01]: there's so much more that you can do with her.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's a super fun to kind of drop into any story and see how she mixes with those characters and see how she kind of shakes it up.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like with so many characters like that it could be corny with her like, you know, texts and sayings and things like that, but she really brings kind of like a genuineness and a heart to it and you believe her, which I think is important for a character like that.
- 1:05:21[SPEAKER_02]: I see no flaws.
- 1:05:23[SPEAKER_02]: The only the only stories I didn't really like were the ones that were written by boys.
- 1:05:28[SPEAKER_02]: The suicide king's was my least favorite, but you know, it still fits with this character.
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think she's excellent.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_02]: I think she's vulnerable and powerful.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_02]: I would love to see her on a main team as the powerhouse.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_02]: You know, when you write a team, you usually only get one really strong character.
- 1:05:42[SPEAKER_02]: And everybody's top choice is always gonna be colossus.
- 1:05:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then, like, strong guys somewhere on the list.
- 1:05:47[SPEAKER_02]: But like, outlaws are really viable, candidate for like a main X-Men team.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think she's wonderful and fun and like watching her try to be a superhero outside the world of like mercenaries and like learn the rules and like how to have to fit in where she's kind of the trouble maker on the team.
- 1:06:03[SPEAKER_02]: I want to see her like clowning around with Wolverine at Harry's hideaway.
- 1:06:07[SPEAKER_02]: I want to see her like arm wrestling with Colossus.
- 1:06:09[SPEAKER_02]: Fuck, let's put her on the Avengers.
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_02]: Like she's really, she's a really fun character.
- 1:06:14[SPEAKER_02]: Watching her interact with her Achilles would be amazing.
- 1:06:17[SPEAKER_02]: Or she hulk and like hellcat in the wasp.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like go out for like fancy cake and dress dinner.
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_02]: there's so many things you can do with her.
- 1:06:24[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I need to know anything more about her origins.
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's some things are better left like a mystery.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I really need to know her connection to the outlaw kid just that you know she's found inspiration that maybe there's a cool story in there to tell but I kind of want to see her interact with other characters in the marble universe now rather than go back.
- 1:06:44[SPEAKER_02]: I would like to see her that more of her relationship with her dad, who's like the descendant of the outlawed.
- 1:06:49[SPEAKER_02]: Why she chose that name?
- 1:06:50[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think that's interesting.
- 1:06:51[SPEAKER_02]: Actually, that little throwaway line in the annual is a big thing for her.
- 1:06:55[SPEAKER_00]: I just love to see more of her.
- 1:06:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking, I'm looking, I'm always looking for any future appearances of the character, and especially where we get these these little hints like we do
- 1:07:13[SPEAKER_00]: working with her sisters where she's still still out there with Diamondback.
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so one, you have to pick an X-Men character, like main character, off of one of the teams, who would you like to see Outlaw Interromantic relationship with?
- 1:07:26[SPEAKER_02]: That's not Deadpool.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of want to see her break sun spot.
- 1:07:32[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I would be cheating to say I tend to shipper with Thamano.
- 1:07:36[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, no, I think that's, yeah, the little, I think they're more like sisters than lovers, but I love it.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think, um, colisto when she had the tentacles, because like she's, she's shown that her love interest like she, she likes a little bit of weirdness, uh, she likes something a little bit different.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I think that would be a lot of fun.
- 1:07:54[SPEAKER_02]: But with the show at Grimalk and Under Score Lane, and we'll be posting content regularly.
- 1:07:58[SPEAKER_01]: No real final thoughts.
- 1:07:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've got we we said a lot.
- 1:08:01[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really looking forward to seeing outlaw in future future issues.
- 1:08:05[SPEAKER_01]: I actually, while he was off social media for the last episode, we did actually just started Instagram back up today.
- 1:08:12[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want to follow me, I don't really have much going on there.
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_01]: Excel summers on Instagram feel free to give me a follow there.
- 1:08:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then I'll shout out the episode as it comes out.
- 1:08:22[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I don't think I have anything else coming up.
- 1:08:24[SPEAKER_01]: Great to see you, my friend.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_01]: Can't wait to hang again.
