- 2:39Speaker 3: three zero four nine three five fine zero zero. We
- 2:42Speaker 3: want to start throw by going out to the field
- 2:44Speaker 3: checking in our rob Rio from our sister station ninety
- 2:47Speaker 3: six to one KWS. In case you missed it last week.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Rob set out last week on a walking trek from
- 2:54Speaker 3: our studios here to eleven eleven, all the way to
- 2:56Speaker 3: WU Children's Hospital in Morgantown to deliver that big old check.
- 3:00Speaker 3: He rested for the weekend a bit, but this morning
- 3:02Speaker 3: he's back at Let's go live to Rob good.
- 3:04Speaker 6: Morning, Good morning out in the field. Is definitely correct.
- 3:09Speaker 6: It is take me home country roads for today's portion
- 3:13Speaker 6: of the walk. Stepped off about an hour ago from
- 3:17Speaker 6: the left hand post office and didn't stay on the
- 3:21Speaker 6: numbered roads for very long. If the directions to your
- 3:25Speaker 6: half involved turn off the paved road, you might be
- 3:29Speaker 6: walking to Morgantown.
- 3:31Speaker 3: It is.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Yeah, it's all county roads until I get to Arnoldsburg.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Today it appears yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And again people are probably saying, we why don't you
- 3:39Speaker 3: just take seventy nine. That's a safety issue. That's why
- 3:42Speaker 3: they wouldn't let you take safety nine or seventy nine.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 3:45Speaker 6: Yes, And so of course we cleared things with West
- 3:49Speaker 6: Virginia State Police. So we did talk about it would
- 3:52Speaker 6: seem safe on that big, wide, flat paved shoulder of
- 3:57Speaker 6: I seventy nine. It seems safe and till it's not.
- 4:01Speaker 6: And so we didn't want to be in the way
- 4:03Speaker 6: of any construction or any breakdowns. And frankly, it's really
- 4:06Speaker 6: quiet out here in God's country Right now. I'm seeing
- 4:10Speaker 6: some beautiful vistas and I plan to all the way
- 4:13Speaker 6: through this day three of October with panhandle cleaning and restoration.
- 4:17Speaker 3: And I want to give a big shout out again
- 4:18Speaker 3: to those folks that panhandle. Now, how far do you
- 4:22Speaker 3: expect to go today?
- 4:24Speaker 6: The plan that today is about seventeen and a half.
- 4:28Speaker 6: I had a really RESTful weekend. What I found about
- 4:31Speaker 6: myself is a weekend is exactly enough time for everything
- 4:34Speaker 6: to stop hurting. So I'm all fit and fiddle this morning.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Mother nature is cooperating, sunny in seventy eight, and if
- 4:41Speaker 6: my body cooperates, I may go a little farther. This
- 4:46Speaker 6: is kind of this week is kind of the stretch
- 4:47Speaker 6: of where it can be elastic. If I want to
- 4:50Speaker 6: go a little farther, I can. If I have to
- 4:52Speaker 6: stop a little short and you know, make it up
- 4:54Speaker 6: later in the week, I can do that too. But officially,
- 4:57Speaker 6: seventeen and a half is today's targ distance.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And again we're talking to Rob Reel from our sister stations,
- 5:03Speaker 3: Superstar Country ninety six one KWS, who said out last
- 5:06Speaker 3: week walking that big old check well over one hundred
- 5:09Speaker 3: almost two hundred thousand dollars check. I think he's taken
- 5:12Speaker 3: from our studios here at eleven eleven to WVU Children's Hospital. Now,
- 5:17Speaker 3: you said you got a little bit of rest over
- 5:18Speaker 3: the weekend, and I don't care to tell this because
- 5:20Speaker 3: you know you and I have a similar sense of humor.
- 5:23Speaker 3: You got to laugh instead of crying. But I was
- 5:25Speaker 3: talking to his crashing some of the folks in studio
- 5:27Speaker 3: and they said that, you know, your calves were bothering
- 5:30Speaker 3: you last week. Obviously a little soreness, but the biggest
- 5:33Speaker 3: problem that you seem to have was chafing, chafing.
- 5:38Speaker 6: Rob So we men of a certain age, and because
- 5:43Speaker 6: you're about a half a lap ahead of me in
- 5:46Speaker 6: the in the age race, gravity is a cruel mistress
- 5:51Speaker 6: and she is undefeated. And there are things for a
- 5:55Speaker 6: fifty almost fifty one year old body that I did
- 5:57Speaker 6: not account for, because you know, the last time I
- 6:00Speaker 6: was going this kind of distance, it was a twenty
- 6:02Speaker 6: year old body. So yeah, I have I've reached out
- 6:07Speaker 6: to my brother in law, Ed who he does super marathons,
- 6:11Speaker 6: because he's that guy, so like forty four miles at
- 6:13Speaker 6: a time, right, and he has recommended some products.
- 6:17Speaker 3: But yeah, this is going off the rails really quickly.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Yeah, my feet, my knees, my back. I expected I did,
- 6:26Speaker 6: I did not expect this.
- 6:28Speaker 7: This.
- 6:28Speaker 3: We'll leave it at that. This okay, Just just as
- 6:31Speaker 3: next year sponsored by Panhandle, but also sponsored by Goldbonn.
- 6:35Speaker 3: That's that'll be our corporate sponsor now again. You can
- 6:38Speaker 3: if you don't follow Superstar Country ninety six to one
- 6:40Speaker 3: KWS on Facebook and on the social media is, make
- 6:42Speaker 3: sure you do, because Rob has been posting videos from
- 6:45Speaker 3: the road, pictures and so on and so forth. That's
- 6:47Speaker 3: all you channeling down to Blanche's Diner and Glendenna a
- 6:50Speaker 3: few days ago. So I got to get that gotta
- 6:52Speaker 3: get that sustenance. Hey, Rob, I appreciate it. Man, be
- 6:55Speaker 3: safe out there and we will check in with you
- 6:57Speaker 3: once again. Top of the show tomorrow. Man, thanks a lot,
- 7:00Speaker 3: Thank you, sir, Rob Real from a sister station ninety
- 7:03Speaker 3: six one KWS Again, Rob is walking. Started out last
- 7:08Speaker 3: week walking from our studios here on Virginia Street all
- 7:11Speaker 3: the way to Morgantown to deliver that check, that big
- 7:14Speaker 3: old check one hundred and seventy thousand some dollars. I
- 7:16Speaker 3: think it was to WVU Children's and yeah we are,
- 7:20Speaker 3: we're gonna be checking in with Rob and sorry to
- 7:23Speaker 3: use the term chafing on the air. That may be
- 7:25Speaker 3: the first time in the history of this show, going
- 7:27Speaker 3: back well before me, that the words chafing have ever
- 7:29Speaker 3: been used on the show. But Dave Allen showing five
- 7:32Speaker 3: Vity Live is presented in part by Generations Physical Therapy,

- 8:31Speaker 3: parents of oor guardians of school age kids. Now this
- 8:36Speaker 3: was a nationwide survey, but the Cardinal Institute has released
- 8:40Speaker 3: this as part of something called the State Educational Opportunity

- 11:47Speaker 3: let him tell you more about this great property. Again,
- 11:50Speaker 3: as I said, going to break there, I wanted to
- 11:51Speaker 3: spend some time talking about a new survey done by
- 11:53Speaker 3: the Cardinal Institute. It was conducted among parents or guardians
- 11:57Speaker 3: of school age kids. It was a nationwide survey. But
- 12:00Speaker 3: the Cardinal Institute has released this as part of something
- 12:02Speaker 3: they're calling the State of Educational Opportunity, and the folks
- 12:06Speaker 3: at fifty Can and a Research were part of that.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Tiffany Hoven is the director of Educational Partnerships and strategy,
- 12:12Speaker 3: and she joins us. Now, Tiffany, good morning, welcome to
- 12:15Speaker 3: the show.
- 12:16Speaker 11: Good morning, Daves. Thank you so much for having me.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. First of all, I have
- 12:20Speaker 3: to ask any time to talk about a particular survey.
- 12:23Speaker 3: How and why was this survey conducted?
- 12:27Speaker 11: Yeah? How you know? This survey was conducted for parents
- 12:31Speaker 11: that have students in any K twelve studying. You know,
- 12:35Speaker 11: as you mentioned, it was across the country, of course,
- 12:38Speaker 11: cardinals focusing on the results for West Virginia, and I
- 12:43Speaker 11: mean I think so, why is It's kind of a
- 12:47Speaker 11: critical time in education. There's a lot of talk about,
- 12:50Speaker 11: you know, school choice across the country, and the results
- 12:55Speaker 11: of this survey sort of is a call to action,
- 12:59Speaker 11: honestly for West Virginia.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Now, Tiffany, I'm just yesterday last night kind of perusing
- 13:05Speaker 3: the results. One part found that West Virginia parents and
- 13:08Speaker 3: guardians are engaged with their kids learning, but they aren't
- 13:13Speaker 3: satisfied for the most part with their kids' schools. They say,
- 13:16Speaker 3: less so than what other parents are around the nation
- 13:20Speaker 3: with their respective schools. Why is that?
- 13:24Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, I actually think that at that point,
- 13:27Speaker 11: Dave is one of the highlights of the survey right
- 13:29Speaker 11: that parents are going places where they feel like they're welcome,
- 13:34Speaker 11: so they're going to PTA meetings and PTO meetings, but overall,
- 13:38Speaker 11: compared to the national average, they're dissatisfied. And one of
- 13:42Speaker 11: the interesting points is that they in West Virginia, parents
- 13:46Speaker 11: rated very low on this percentage answering they feel like
- 13:50Speaker 11: they have a choice, which is really interesting to me
- 13:53Speaker 11: because we actually have more choice in West Virginia than
- 13:56Speaker 11: most other states in the country. There are lots and
- 13:58Speaker 11: lots of options, and we're falling below the national average
- 14:03Speaker 11: and school satisfaction, and parents are saying they would not
- 14:06Speaker 11: make the same choice if they had the option. And
- 14:09Speaker 11: you know, the message for me is we do. We
- 14:11Speaker 11: have all the options, and I think it's just a
- 14:13Speaker 11: matter of spreading the news that all of those options
- 14:17Speaker 11: are present for parents and that they can make a
- 14:19Speaker 11: different decision if they choose to.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Talking with Tiffany Hoping again from the Cardinal Institute, another
- 14:25Speaker 3: finding in this and reading this last night tivity, around
- 14:27Speaker 3: twenty nine percent of parents say that they are confident.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Only twenty nine percent of the parents say they're confident
- 14:35Speaker 3: that their kids will be equipped to succeed in the workforce,
- 14:37Speaker 3: and only twenty eight percent say their kid is prepared
- 14:41Speaker 3: for college. That's that's not a lot.
- 14:43Speaker 11: Tiffany, It's really not. And you know it's below what
- 14:48Speaker 11: is already sort of a dismal national average. Right, the
- 14:52Speaker 11: national average in those two categories is thirty four and
- 14:55Speaker 11: thirty two percent, respectfully. And you know, so when we
- 14:58Speaker 11: think about what is college and career readiness look like? Right,
- 15:01Speaker 11: if you think, if you're picturing in your mind a
- 15:04Speaker 11: K twelve student that's graduating from high school and they're
- 15:06Speaker 11: about to go on to the workforce, so they're about
- 15:08Speaker 11: to start college, what are the expectations for what you
- 15:12Speaker 11: would want them to be able to do?
- 15:13Speaker 12: Well?
- 15:13Speaker 11: We want them to have critical thinking skills, to competently
- 15:17Speaker 11: express their thoughts through writing, to be able to read well,
- 15:21Speaker 11: do basic math right, be able to go shopping and
- 15:24Speaker 11: do percentages and all of those things that we have
- 15:26Speaker 11: to do in our lives. And to be able to
- 15:30Speaker 11: engage in civil society right, to understand our constitutional republic,
- 15:36Speaker 11: to understand how to engage with government. And what we
- 15:39Speaker 11: see in the performance metrics is that despite putting more
- 15:44Speaker 11: and more money into the K twelve system, on most
- 15:48Speaker 11: of those metrics, we're running about fifty percent. If you
- 15:51Speaker 11: go to the Board of Education's website and pull up
- 15:54Speaker 11: any local county in West Virginia, math and ELA proficiency
- 15:58Speaker 11: runs right at fifty percent every single time county. And
- 16:00Speaker 11: I don't know about you, but fifty fifties not odds.
- 16:04Speaker 11: I want to play with my child reading in math.
- 16:07Speaker 11: And recently, the Nation's Report Card MAPE does testing in
- 16:13Speaker 11: US history. There's four categories that they test American democracy,
- 16:17Speaker 11: American culture, economics and technology, and the role of America
- 16:22Speaker 11: at large in the world. And in the last ten years,
- 16:27Speaker 11: historically before twenty fourteen, that score always went up right
- 16:32Speaker 11: when we gauged those things in twenty fourteen. In twenty eighteen.
- 16:38Speaker 11: From twenty fourteen, the scores has done nothing but go
- 16:40Speaker 11: down right. And the last two metrics, the scores have dropped.
- 16:43Speaker 11: And that's nationwide. So it's not necessarily an indictment on
- 16:46Speaker 11: you know, West Virginia per se, but we're not teaching
- 16:50Speaker 11: our kids civics and government. And I think that something
- 16:53Speaker 11: that we can do here in West Virginia to improve
- 16:56Speaker 11: those outcomes specifically is to take a shot. I think
- 17:00Speaker 11: parents should be demanding that our social studies standards in
- 17:03Speaker 11: West Virginia be rewritten to reflect the accurate telling of
- 17:09Speaker 11: our history and a rigorous teaching of how to interact
- 17:14Speaker 11: with our government and how our form of government works.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Well, I can say this, and I don't know how
- 17:20Speaker 3: much they're actually retaining this, but A and of course
- 17:22Speaker 3: you and I have never met till this interview, but
- 17:25Speaker 3: in a past life, I used to work for the
- 17:26Speaker 3: West Virginia Secretary of State's office and we went into
- 17:29Speaker 3: schools into Civics classes. So the classes are there and
- 17:33Speaker 3: they're they're being taught, and I just don't know how
- 17:36Speaker 3: much the kids maybe are retaining of it. But the
- 17:39Speaker 3: Civics is a requirement, uh in schools and uh. But
- 17:43Speaker 3: but again, it's just like with math or anything else.
- 17:45Speaker 3: I guess you have some teachers that are better at it,
- 17:47Speaker 3: I guess than others. Do you think that that when
- 17:50Speaker 3: you hear these numbers, does it seem like we're putting
- 17:53Speaker 3: a lot? I mean, it kind of seems to me
- 17:55Speaker 3: like there's a lot of blame put on the school system,
- 17:56Speaker 3: and I completely understand that, But but then there's some
- 18:00Speaker 3: sort of parental responsibility here as well, where where does
- 18:03Speaker 3: that factor.
- 18:03Speaker 11: In parental responsibility in terms of like civics and government.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Mathat I mean a lot of that stuff I actually
- 18:12Speaker 3: learned at home.
- 18:14Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean I did too, right, Like my dad
- 18:16Speaker 11: was a navy man and I learned all about everything.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, absolutely home.
- 18:24Speaker 7: But not all kids have that, I guess, no, not
- 18:26Speaker 7: all kids have that, and not all parents are prepared
- 18:29Speaker 7: to talk about right like the structure and function of
- 18:32Speaker 7: government and home and.
- 18:34Speaker 11: You know, to your earlier point, they are teaching it
- 18:37Speaker 11: like there. I have no doubt in my mind that
- 18:39Speaker 11: there are civics classes out there, but just as a
- 18:42Speaker 11: reference point, you know, my background was that I was
- 18:45Speaker 11: a Civics and government teacher for fifteen years in the
- 18:48Speaker 11: school system and then trained other teachers, teaching how them
- 18:52Speaker 11: how to properly teach the American government in their classrooms.
- 18:57Speaker 11: And it's definitely happening. But one of the things that
- 19:00Speaker 11: I find is if we're waiting until middle and high
- 19:04Speaker 11: school to have these conversations, it's a little bit too late.
- 19:09Speaker 11: Elementary school teachers should be teaching these things too, And
- 19:12Speaker 11: you know, Mas and Ela, course, parents should be supporting
- 19:15Speaker 11: their children at home, but not every parent is in
- 19:18Speaker 11: a position to do that.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I got you.
- 19:20Speaker 11: You know, I taught kids in elementary school that you know,
- 19:24Speaker 11: their parents work evening shifts and they walked home from
- 19:26Speaker 11: the school bus and didn't see anybody until in the morning.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a good point. It's a very good point,
- 19:31Speaker 3: and I appreciate you bringing that up. But Dave Allan
- 19:33Speaker 3: chowing five videl I brought to you a part by

- 19:48Speaker 3: I have a latest episodes wv metronews dot com under
- 19:51Speaker 3: the podcast menu. Starts your journey towards better health day tivity.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Before we wrap this up, a couple of other quick points.
- 19:57Speaker 3: A lot of parents say that they don't understand how
- 19:59Speaker 3: school budgets work. And we spent a lot of time
- 20:03Speaker 3: here in Kanawhac County talking about money for schools because
- 20:07Speaker 3: we're in the midst of a lot of school closing, consolidation, hearing.
- 20:10Speaker 3: There's another one coming up tonight here in Kanawhac County.
- 20:13Speaker 3: So a lot of parents, I've got questions about budget
- 20:16Speaker 3: issues when it comes to schools as well.
- 20:19Speaker 11: Yeah, and that is one hundred percent fair concern. I
- 20:22Speaker 11: think you know, you can access at some very high
- 20:27Speaker 11: level some information about how money is spent, but the
- 20:31Speaker 11: buckets are very big buckets where a lot of the
- 20:34Speaker 11: detail gets lost. They're not located on the district's website,
- 20:39Speaker 11: and so, in my opinion, financial transparency is well a
- 20:45Speaker 11: this is taxpayer dollars. These are publicly funded schools, and
- 20:49Speaker 11: they should be required to list out their expenditures. Like
- 20:53Speaker 11: I want to know exactly what's happening here, and I
- 20:55Speaker 11: think that parents might not know where to find that where.
- 20:59Speaker 11: If I was a parent and my kid is in
- 21:00Speaker 11: the school down the street, I would go to Riley
- 21:03Speaker 11: County Districts website and look for it there. And I
- 21:06Speaker 11: think parents had got to demand that information about how
- 21:11Speaker 11: those tax dollars are being spent is easily accessible, understandable
- 21:15Speaker 11: to a layperson who finds it on the website and
- 21:18Speaker 11: can see how those funds are being used.
- 21:22Speaker 3: They have a right to note that Tiffany Hoben again
- 21:25Speaker 3: is the director of Educational Partnerships and Strategy for the
- 21:28Speaker 3: Cardinal Institute. Is there a place online, tiffany where people
- 21:31Speaker 3: can check out the survey or the results for themselves.
- 21:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 11: Absolutely, you can go to the Cardinal Institute dot com.
- 21:37Speaker 11: Everything is on our website. The fifty can survey in

- 21:51Speaker 3: All right, Tiffany, We'll talk again soon and I appreciate

- 22:50Speaker 3: That is not what he woods. That is Steve Animal

- 22:56Speaker 3: I am.
- 22:57Speaker 13: I am about eight inches.
- 23:01Speaker 3: So this is a big event, you know, Trick or Beat,
- 23:03Speaker 3: and we've been doing this for a long long time.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Couldn't do it without the folks at Selango Law. There's
- 23:07Speaker 3: a ton of other sponsors and we'll be talking about
- 23:09Speaker 3: those over the next couple of days that get it out.
- 23:11Speaker 3: But you know, I mean, this is a this is
- 23:14Speaker 3: a big event, mister Animal.
- 23:16Speaker 13: Yes, it is coming up this Thursday, there's two shifts,
- 23:19Speaker 13: two options for you to roll into the park at
- 23:21Speaker 13: six to seven or seven thirty to eight thirty. And
- 23:24Speaker 13: I know we've been doing away tickets. I was up
- 23:26Speaker 13: at the front desk a little bit earlier. Some people
- 23:29Speaker 13: over from Piedmont walked in, some people actually from the
- 23:32Speaker 13: city looking for tickets for their kids, which is pretty awesome.
- 23:35Speaker 13: So it's going to be a great night. The weather
- 23:37Speaker 13: is supposed to cooperate too, so lots of fun, lots
- 23:40Speaker 13: of candy, lots of.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Fun, lots of candy, I mean, what could what more
- 23:45Speaker 3: could you ask for? And and wood he woulds and
- 23:48Speaker 3: g Mommy and all the folks from the beat at
- 23:50Speaker 3: all your crew, well pretty much the entire career. I
- 23:52Speaker 3: am not going to be there. I was there last year,
- 23:55Speaker 3: but I will be because Rob is out walking to Morgantown.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Somebody's got to do some work here. So I am
- 24:01Speaker 3: going to be on our sister station KWS doing a
- 24:03Speaker 3: live broadcast from the Putnam Career Technical Center on Thursday night,
- 24:07Speaker 3: So I will not be a part of it. But again,
- 24:09Speaker 3: as Steve said, it is Thursday night, and you do
- 24:13Speaker 3: have to have tickets, but the tickets are free. And
- 24:17Speaker 3: I was standing out front talking to Tracy and the
- 24:19Speaker 3: folks out front and yourself a little bit earlier. People
- 24:22Speaker 3: just roll up into our office here eleven eleven Virginia
- 24:25Speaker 3: Streets in Charleston and pick up the tickets. Yeah, and
- 24:30Speaker 3: this very easily could sell out. I mean, you know,
- 24:32Speaker 3: and again the tickets are free, but just for a
- 24:34Speaker 3: head count, we have to have it. And parents don't
- 24:36Speaker 3: have to have tickets. It's only for the kids. I
- 24:39Speaker 3: was talking to a mother out there that showed up
- 24:40Speaker 3: that she had was bringing two kids. And there are
- 24:42Speaker 3: two sessions, so you got to decide do you want
- 24:44Speaker 3: the six o'clock or the seven thirty. And as I mentioned,
- 24:47Speaker 3: Slango Law is the title sponsor on this, but there's
- 24:49Speaker 3: a whole lot of other folks that are making it possible.
- 24:51Speaker 13: Too true, there's a six ticket limit on that, but

- 25:29Speaker 3: And last year was the first year that I actually
- 25:31Speaker 3: got to participate in it because the other years I
- 25:33Speaker 3: had other things going on. But I mean this thing.
- 25:36Speaker 3: The lines go way down the street. But again once
- 25:39Speaker 3: the tickets are gone, that's it. And it was sold
- 25:43Speaker 3: out and we had to cut off the tickets. So
- 25:44Speaker 3: over I must say, over the next one or two days,
- 25:47Speaker 3: you need to make your way parents or grandparents down
- 25:50Speaker 3: to eleven eleven Virginia Street Eats in Charleston during normal
- 25:53Speaker 3: business hours and pick up the tickets. The tickets are free,
- 25:56Speaker 3: but again just for the head count purpose. And the
- 25:58Speaker 3: parents don't need tickets, only only the kids. Because you
- 26:01Speaker 3: don't have tickets, you don't get in. We have two
- 26:03Speaker 3: different I want to say shows or performances or whatever
- 26:07Speaker 3: you want to call out events between six and seven

- 26:12Speaker 3: a great job as a Woody Wood surrogate. Oh thank you.
- 26:17Speaker 13: I feel very privileged and thank you for the opportunity.
- 26:20Speaker 13: What are he for sleeping in this morning?
- 26:21Speaker 3: Now? What he actually had a meeting? I talked to
- 26:23Speaker 3: him last night. What he has a music? Because you know,
- 26:26Speaker 3: all that music that they play on the Beat's got
- 26:27Speaker 3: to come from somewhere. And I think he was in
- 26:29Speaker 3: a musical beating a meeting with some or beating as
- 26:31Speaker 3: I said, yes, with record executives this morning. So we'll
- 26:35Speaker 3: try to have him on on Thursday show. But again
- 26:37Speaker 3: to Beat and a lot of our folks, not all,
- 26:39Speaker 3: but a lot of our folks are going to be

- 32:33Speaker 16: I owe Glenn Elliott five dollars. He doesn't owe anybody anything,
- 32:38Speaker 16: unlike his opponent.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Speaking of as you were earlier about you were up
- 32:43Speaker 3: for the game, Former President Donald Trump was also at
- 32:46Speaker 3: the game. I got a text about that. I'm going
- 32:48Speaker 3: to get to that here momentarily. I have to say, though,
- 32:51Speaker 3: that come on Saturday night. I guess when Trump did
- 32:53Speaker 3: the appearance in Latro, Pennsylvania. I did not have a
- 32:56Speaker 3: former president talking about the size of a late Arnold's
- 33:00Speaker 3: penis on my Bengo car.
- 33:01Speaker 16: That was just odd. And I saw that Arnold Palmer's daughter,
- 33:05Speaker 16: one of his daughters came out and said it was
- 33:07Speaker 16: really inappropriate. I think disrespectful to the memory of her father.
- 33:12Speaker 3: I did.
- 33:12Speaker 16: I wasn't watching it, but I heard about it, and
- 33:15Speaker 16: why on earth? Well, something's going on.
- 33:18Speaker 15: You know.
- 33:18Speaker 16: There's a lot of talk after the first debate that
- 33:21Speaker 16: Biden had to get out of the race. Yeah, that
- 33:23Speaker 16: talk should have been about Donald Trump as well. He
- 33:27Speaker 16: got up and danced on stage. But last week, Uh,
- 33:31Speaker 16: during a town hall, he just decided to quit answering
- 33:34Speaker 16: questions and dance for forty minutes.
- 33:37Speaker 3: If that's what you call what he does, I don't know.
- 33:39Speaker 3: If you watch it.
- 33:40Speaker 16: He was just swaying back and forth to Ave Barria,
- 33:42Speaker 16: which is not exactly a dance number.
- 33:44Speaker 3: Well, and he's also got to find us for YMCA
- 33:46Speaker 3: and I'm just gonna leave that. I'm gonna leave that one.
- 33:48Speaker 16: A He's he's got to find us for music that
- 33:51Speaker 16: he's allowed to use legally because the those who write
- 33:54Speaker 16: the music didn't suit. A lot of times he'll use
- 33:57Speaker 16: songs and then get sued over it. Apparently Franz Schubert,
- 34:01Speaker 16: who wrote Ive Maria, hasn't sued him yet, but it's coming.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Uh that Texas Dave we get dementia Donald awkwardly swinging
- 34:10Speaker 3: to music for near forty minutes. Then we get ding
- 34:12Speaker 3: Dong Donald finding over Arnold Palmer's manhood. Then we got
- 34:16Speaker 3: Ronald McDonald pretended to work and he closed McDonald's. I'd
- 34:20Speaker 3: be embarrassed to vote for that mentally declining geriatric. I
- 34:23Speaker 3: don't know was the McDonald's close. I don't know why
- 34:25Speaker 3: it was, but.
- 34:26Speaker 16: It's just he's playing, you know, he's playing McDonald. The
- 34:29Speaker 16: guy's never actually had to work, and he's head of
- 34:32Speaker 16: a restaurant job. And we all know he was born
- 34:34Speaker 16: the son of Fred Trump, you know, born to a
- 34:37Speaker 16: real estate magnet in New York City who has sued
- 34:41Speaker 16: countless times for civil rights violations. By the way, but no,
- 34:45Speaker 16: I don't think he had that might have. That's probably
- 34:47Speaker 16: the first time he set foot in the McDonald's.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Well. No, well, he probably maybe the first time he
- 34:52Speaker 3: set foot in there. But he is known to be
- 34:53Speaker 3: quite the McDonald's.
- 34:55Speaker 16: You're I remember that time when he bought all the McDonald's.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Well.
- 34:59Speaker 3: He the the White House staffers say that he's quite
- 35:01Speaker 3: fond of laying in bed and needing McDonald's and watching
- 35:05Speaker 3: himself on Fox News. That's a quote from people that
- 35:07Speaker 3: have worked there. I lost a little bit of respect
- 35:09Speaker 3: for Donald Trump when I found out he orders his
- 35:11Speaker 3: steak medium or I'm sorry, well done, and puts ketchup
- 35:14Speaker 3: on it, because that's just that's that's not of God.
- 35:17Speaker 16: In my opinion.
- 35:18Speaker 3: The only thing I would say is, if your grandpa
- 35:21Speaker 3: started acting the way Donald Trump has in public, could
- 35:24Speaker 3: probably not take him out in public anymore.
- 35:26Speaker 16: I'm just saying it's odd. Arnold Palmer Rant was incredibly odd,
- 35:31Speaker 16: and I you know, well, I know I won't be
- 35:34Speaker 16: voting for him.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Texas. The McDonald's was closed for a few hours in
- 35:38Speaker 3: Trump's visit. The customers who served with supporters who were
- 35:41Speaker 3: screened ahead of time, says the thing, and maybe there's
- 35:44Speaker 3: a safety issue there, and you know, possibly, I understand,
- 35:47Speaker 3: I'm reaching. I'm reaching. I'm trying to give him benefit,
- 35:49Speaker 3: but I don't think I could do that, Texas. Dave,
- 35:51Speaker 3: could you inquire with Deligate Pushkin about the Iran and
- 35:54Speaker 3: Afghanistan War monument that was to be built at the
- 35:57Speaker 3: state capitol in a similar fashion to the other war
- 35:59Speaker 3: memorial there. He sponsored a great bill that passed in
- 36:02Speaker 3: twenty twenty to build it. But now we're pushing twenty
- 36:04Speaker 3: twenty five. A lot of Iraq in Afghanistan vets and
- 36:07Speaker 3: gold star families are scratching our heads. We fought to
- 36:10Speaker 3: and deserve a monument on par with those who fought
- 36:12Speaker 3: innother war.
- 36:13Speaker 16: I really appreciate that question. We did push a bill through,
- 36:19Speaker 16: not a resolution either, an actual you know, actual legislation
- 36:22Speaker 16: that went through years ago to honor those who paid
- 36:28Speaker 16: the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives for wars in
- 36:30Speaker 16: this century. I mean, we have there are other great
- 36:33Speaker 16: war monuments up there at the at the state Capitol,
- 36:37Speaker 16: but there wasn't anything for those who gave their lives
- 36:41Speaker 16: in this century and the ongoing war on terrand, war
- 36:44Speaker 16: in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq. And we passed that,
- 36:48Speaker 16: of course of passinganimously, and it was signed into law.
- 36:52Speaker 16: And then and more recently there was another bill that
- 36:55Speaker 16: even spelled out more specifically what the monument should look
- 37:00Speaker 16: like and even and how to pay for it everything.
- 37:02Speaker 16: And there hasn't been as far as I know, no
- 37:04Speaker 16: movement on that from the uh uh you know, from
- 37:07Speaker 16: the division of culture. I believe it's through the division
- 37:10Speaker 16: of culture has probably that are the Capitol Building Commission,
- 37:13Speaker 16: of course, which is is shaired by cabinet level position.
- 37:17Speaker 16: Now who was allee, But it's I don't want to
- 37:23Speaker 16: get any trouble here, but when you have stuff that's
- 37:25Speaker 16: there is no legislation for, and you're pushing something through
- 37:28Speaker 16: to put you know, baby dogs picture into a mural
- 37:31Speaker 16: and spending tax dollars on things like that, but then
- 37:34Speaker 16: it's very frustrating for us where something that we all
- 37:36Speaker 16: agreed on in the legislature pass for this monument and
- 37:39Speaker 16: so far, you know, there's very little movement on that,
- 37:43Speaker 16: and it's it's incredibly uh, disrespectful, and I share the
- 37:48Speaker 16: textures frustration. And that was they passed a bill, We
- 37:51Speaker 16: passed two bills on it. And it seems like some
- 37:54Speaker 16: people in state government, some unelected folks in state government
- 37:57Speaker 16: just do whatever they want. A lot of them happen
- 37:59Speaker 16: to work work for Governor Justice.
- 38:01Speaker 3: That was the whole rub on the whole thing with
- 38:04Speaker 3: baby dog in the portrait. It wasn't about the dog.
- 38:07Speaker 3: And I know I got texted the show when people said, well,
- 38:09Speaker 3: aren't there more important things to worry about? And I
- 38:11Speaker 3: agree with that. However, however, it's the process. And in
- 38:16Speaker 3: state government. As someone who used to work at the capitol,
- 38:18Speaker 3: I can tell you you don't move a vase in
- 38:21Speaker 3: an office without consulting with the groundscrew there or whatever
- 38:25Speaker 3: they're called. I mean, seriously, if you wanted to rearrange
- 38:27Speaker 3: an office, you have to have permission. In the office
- 38:29Speaker 3: I worked in, if you wanted to rearrange anything I'm
- 38:32Speaker 3: talking about just moving one desk to the other side,
- 38:34Speaker 3: you had to have permission.
- 38:35Speaker 16: And so you know, that's that's where the lack of transparency,
- 38:40Speaker 16: the lack of accessibility, the lack of you know, when
- 38:45Speaker 16: I say accessibility mean for the public to get questions
- 38:48Speaker 16: answered by this by the Justice administration. It all starts
- 38:53Speaker 16: from the top. I say, there's old saying of fish
- 38:57Speaker 16: rots from the head, and that's the problem is the
- 39:00Speaker 16: guy at the top. And so when somebody doesn't show
- 39:03Speaker 16: up for work, either their cabinet secretary, sometimes we'll just
- 39:08Speaker 16: well sometimes not do what they're supposed to do, and
- 39:11Speaker 16: sometimes they do things that they're not supposed to do
- 39:14Speaker 16: and just act. And I think in that particular division
- 39:18Speaker 16: you have folks who just act without being transparent with
- 39:22Speaker 16: the taxpayer's money. And unfortunately in other departments there's not
- 39:27Speaker 16: enough getting done. As when you're talking about the departments
- 39:31Speaker 16: that oversee our overburdened boster care system or the IDD
- 39:37Speaker 16: waiver program or things like that, not enough is getting done.
- 39:40Speaker 16: And in other places they just can just do whatever
- 39:43Speaker 16: they want without answering anybody because the boss doesn't show
- 39:46Speaker 16: up for work. And that's the ongoing theme, is that
- 39:49Speaker 16: the boss doesn't show up.
- 39:50Speaker 3: Much like a lot of offices that are listening right now,
- 39:52Speaker 3: the boss doesn't show up.
- 39:54Speaker 16: Bad things, that's right.
- 39:56Speaker 3: It's like we have a substitute teacher in school, Texas.
- 39:58Speaker 3: I learned from home that the Deep State attempted to
- 40:01Speaker 3: steal an election from Donald Trump. Then I learned from
- 40:03Speaker 3: the Secretary of State that the CIA tried to rig
- 40:06Speaker 3: the election. Then I learned from Representative Mooney and Miller
- 40:09Speaker 3: that the vice president can reject any valid electoral votes
- 40:11Speaker 3: just because the president says so. Then I learned from
- 40:14Speaker 3: Senator Capito that it is an oath of office for
- 40:17Speaker 3: senators includes endorsing political violence. Then I learned that the
- 40:20Speaker 3: president can sickt the military and Americans who disagree with
- 40:23Speaker 3: the President by calling them enemies within then I learned
- 40:26Speaker 3: from Republicans that anyone who's not a Republican is a Marxist,
- 40:29Speaker 3: socialist and communist. See, I have a robust education on civics,
- 40:33Speaker 3: very very tongue in cheek there.
- 40:35Speaker 16: But but unfortunately, unfortunately, all these things have been said
- 40:39Speaker 16: by many elected officials and people who should be responsible
- 40:42Speaker 16: with their rhetoric, especially you know, the chief election officer
- 40:47Speaker 16: of the state of West Virginia who attended to stop
- 40:50Speaker 16: the Steel rally when he was the chief election officer
- 40:53Speaker 16: of the state. Now it's uh, you know, it is
- 40:56Speaker 16: very concerning. And that's really I think what really bothers
- 40:59Speaker 16: me the most about politics These days, people can say
- 41:03Speaker 16: things that are just so incredibly irresponsible and dangerous, and
- 41:07Speaker 16: they just repeat the lie and repeat the lie and
- 41:09Speaker 16: repeat the lie. And you've got a guy like Elon
- 41:11Speaker 16: Musk who bought Twitter, changed the name of it, you know,
- 41:16Speaker 16: what do you call it? The Artists formerly known Artists,
- 41:19Speaker 16: and and and he pushes his own account which is
- 41:23Speaker 16: constantly pushing misinformation, and it is misinformation. And I just
- 41:28Speaker 16: read this this story recently where he is has these
- 41:31Speaker 16: fake websites that are pretending to be Harris Wall's websites
- 41:35Speaker 16: where they're putting out of like fake platform, like things
- 41:39Speaker 16: that that that Vice President Harris and Governor Wallas have
- 41:42Speaker 16: never said, but they're putting it out as this fake
- 41:44Speaker 16: platform and acting there, they're acting like they are official
- 41:48Speaker 16: websites of the campaign, and you know, it's it's incredibly
- 41:52Speaker 16: dangerous and I'm I definitely worried about the the direction
- 41:56Speaker 16: our country of politics, like that, the whole little.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Spiel they have it about fake news. I think it
- 42:01Speaker 3: was on Thursday or Friday's show, and then over the
- 42:03Speaker 3: weekend there's something that's being circulated on social media that
- 42:08Speaker 3: has this tree of everybody that's related and supposedly it
- 42:13Speaker 3: was like, you know, Adam Adam Shift was married to that.
- 42:17Speaker 3: None of it's.
- 42:19Speaker 16: Anybody can share.
- 42:20Speaker 3: The simple Google search will tell you. I think it
- 42:23Speaker 3: was Adam Schiff's sister was supposed to be married. Adam
- 42:25Speaker 3: Shift doesn't have a sister. I looked, you know, I
- 42:28Speaker 3: googled it myself. You know, he doesn't have a sister.
- 42:31Speaker 5: But you know, none of that.
- 42:32Speaker 16: Was true, and I look, I'm one hundred percent for
- 42:34Speaker 16: free speech, but we got there's also a responsibility that
- 42:37Speaker 16: comes with freedom, and just because you can do something,
- 42:41Speaker 16: doesn't mean you should do something. And Elon Musk is
- 42:43Speaker 16: really pushing the boundaries of it because he owns this
- 42:46Speaker 16: huge social media company, is able to control so much misinformation,
- 42:51Speaker 16: and it's stuff like that that he's putting out there.
- 42:53Speaker 16: And you know, if anybody should be concerned about somebody
- 42:57Speaker 16: in the media or on social media should be Elon.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Texas, Mike, the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Abu Dhabi paid
- 43:03Speaker 3: off Jimbo's loans. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the
- 43:07Speaker 3: United Era of Immirates, not of Saudi Arabia.
- 43:09Speaker 16: Okay, I stand corrected. So he is taking foreign money
- 43:12Speaker 16: to pay off his debts, yes, Texas.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Dave tell Mike he is reaching for straws and continues
- 43:18Speaker 3: to attack a former president who has a history of
- 43:20Speaker 3: great policies for this nation. He needs to realize one.
- 43:23Speaker 3: He needs to realize that the Democratic Party is done
- 43:26Speaker 3: in West Virginia and being less and less than the nation.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Democrats have too many damaging policies common sense, Mike.
- 43:32Speaker 16: Well, let's name some of these policies. What were the
- 43:35Speaker 16: policies of Donald Trump were a huge tax cut for
- 43:39Speaker 16: the rich people like Elon Musk, and that's probably why
- 43:41Speaker 16: people like Elon Musk are putting so much money into
- 43:44Speaker 16: this campaign, because they're the ones who really benefit from
- 43:47Speaker 16: these these top ended tax cuts. He packed the courts
- 43:52Speaker 16: with judges who have been really you know, anti labor,
- 43:56Speaker 16: anti women. They overturned Rovid and now in a state
- 44:01Speaker 16: like West Virginia, women have lost fifty years of reproductive
- 44:07Speaker 16: freedom that they had under Row has been taken away
- 44:10Speaker 16: in states like West Virginia who haven't been allowed to
- 44:13Speaker 16: vote on it. Like he says, we're going to send
- 44:15Speaker 16: it back to the states and let them vote on it. Well,
- 44:17Speaker 16: West Virginia hasn't been allowed to do that. And he
- 44:19Speaker 16: stripped away a lot of regulations that kept us safe,
- 44:24Speaker 16: kept our water cleaner, kept our air cleaner, things like
- 44:26Speaker 16: that that were meant to just help people. That's what
- 44:31Speaker 16: his policies were. That's all he did. Now if you
- 44:36Speaker 16: look at what the policies have been since then, we
- 44:39Speaker 16: were able to get out of the worst pandemic we've
- 44:42Speaker 16: had in one hundred years, were the worst economic crisis
- 44:44Speaker 16: we've had in one hundred years, through the American Rescue
- 44:47Speaker 16: Plan that actually sent money down to the cities and
- 44:50Speaker 16: the counties and bypassed governors like Jim Justice, who never
- 44:53Speaker 16: spent the Cares Act money. When he did, he did
- 44:55Speaker 16: it on the baby dog truck sweepstakes. He was able
- 44:59Speaker 16: to President Biden and Vice President Harris were able to
- 45:02Speaker 16: pass the Infrastructure Bill that has sent all sorts of
- 45:05Speaker 16: investment to states like West Virginia, helped us rebuild our
- 45:08Speaker 16: roads and our bridges, put a lot of people to
- 45:11Speaker 16: work here. He was able to pass Biden and Harris
- 45:14Speaker 16: administration able to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which also
- 45:18Speaker 16: incentivized a lot of investment here in West Virginia. And
- 45:20Speaker 16: that's why you have these announcements like Form Energy and
- 45:24Speaker 16: New Core And I could go on and on, but
- 45:25Speaker 16: you're waving at me to wrap. Those are the policies
- 45:29Speaker 16: that have benefited West Virginia from the Biden Harris administration.
- 45:32Speaker 16: There weren't any under Trump but.

- 48:47Speaker 16: you know our teachers and other workers in the public
- 48:49Speaker 16: sector here who are finding out now under once again,
- 48:53Speaker 16: under the watch of Jim Justice and the Republican legislature,
- 48:56Speaker 16: their health insurance is going to go up. The PIA
- 48:58Speaker 16: premiums are going to go up in it's not fair
- 49:01Speaker 16: to them. And in fact Governor Justice said early in
- 49:05Speaker 16: his UH in his administration of PI, I think it
- 49:08Speaker 16: was during one of the the teacher strikes where PI
- 49:11Speaker 16: was not gonna they weren't going to raise premiums under
- 49:13Speaker 16: his watch. Well, they already have once and now they're
- 49:15Speaker 16: talking about doing it again. And I feel the real
- 49:18Speaker 16: motive here and the real goal of the Republican Party
- 49:21Speaker 16: in West Virginia is to privatize it and to throw
- 49:24Speaker 16: our teachers and other people who work in public and
- 49:28Speaker 16: public service are going to throw.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Them to the wolves.
- 49:30Speaker 16: And we don't have enough teachers now, we don't have
- 49:32Speaker 16: enough correctional officers, now, we don't have enough people working
- 49:36Speaker 16: for child protective services. Now, how are we going to
- 49:38Speaker 16: attract more people to that when we keep raising their
- 49:41Speaker 16: premiums without giving them enough raises to offset it. And
- 49:44Speaker 16: you know who's really getting uh? Can I say screwed. Sure,
- 49:47Speaker 16: I'll tell you who's I refer to Arnold Palmers Penis.
- 49:50Speaker 16: I'm not going to be as as filthy as the
- 49:53Speaker 16: former president was. But who's really getting screwed in West
- 49:56Speaker 16: Virginia are retirees, our former state workers who are retirees,
- 50:00Speaker 16: and they don't get a cost of AVIC adjustment. Yet
- 50:02Speaker 16: their healthcare costs keep going up and up and up
- 50:04Speaker 16: because people the legislature aren't able to do the heavy
- 50:08Speaker 16: lifting and actually fund it and actually prioritize taking care
- 50:12Speaker 16: of those who took care of us.
- 50:13Speaker 3: You wanted to say something told me to have the
- 50:15Speaker 3: break about polling numbers. Is that what you said? You
- 50:18Speaker 3: said something about polling numbers.
- 50:19Speaker 16: Pulling number? No, actually, I mean we could talk about
- 50:22Speaker 16: that if you have a poll that we want to know.
- 50:24Speaker 3: I thought you don't have anything.
- 50:27Speaker 16: I said.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Rides to the polls, rides to the early voting.
- 50:30Speaker 16: I just wantse Early voting in West Virginia starts on
- 50:32Speaker 16: Wednesday and goes through November two. Of course, we all
- 50:36Speaker 16: know election day is November fifth here in Kanall County.
- 50:40Speaker 16: If you or anybody no needs a ride to the
- 50:42Speaker 16: poll regardless, you know, regardless of who you vote for.

- 51:01Speaker 15: Uh.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Are you concerned that either party or the station goes
- 51:05Speaker 3: to that the country goes to hell in a handbasket
- 51:07Speaker 3: if the other side wins, Because I hear a lot
- 51:09Speaker 3: about that.
- 51:10Speaker 16: Give me twenty I'm very concerned about what was second
- 51:14Speaker 16: Trump presidency would look like. But I do, uh, you know,
- 51:17Speaker 16: great faith in this country. I think we're gonna be
- 51:19Speaker 16: able to get through anything, even even that, hopefully, But no,
- 51:23Speaker 16: I'm concerned about the consolidation of power and some of
- 51:25Speaker 16: the dangerous rhetoric that he's thrown out there. So we're
- 51:28Speaker 16: just all gonna vote as when we fight, we win, all.
