- 4:54saves you a little bit of coin at the end.
- 4:57So anyway, it's all there figured out if you want to join
- 5:00and support the channel in this way or support the production of
- 5:02the show. In this way, and Speaking of
- 5:06support and. Being a person who has been now
- 5:13doing content, this is our 7th season of the show of Random
- 5:16Heathen Ramblings. A lot of things have happened in
- 5:20my growth as a person. And one of the things that has
- 5:26been kind of on my mind to want to talk about is, you know, I'm
- 5:32sure that you folks out here that have your own, you know,
- 5:37you have your own things that are going on, right?
- 5:39You're you're watching content, maybe here or or listening to
- 5:41other podcasts or seeing other people.
- 5:48Put out material from a position of, we'll say authority.
- 5:54You know, coming from a position of claiming to know what they
- 5:56know. And not everybody who's doing
- 6:00stuff like this knows what they're talking about.
- 6:04Not everybody who's putting their voice out for the world or
- 6:09their persona or or whatever. Not everybody is, I guess.
- 6:15Qualified. Some people will go through
- 6:23this. Inflation of their ego and they
- 6:28claim that or they're not aware of it happening, but you know,
- 6:33through spiritual growth, through advancement in.
- 6:36Things that you've experienced, some people can allow that to be
- 6:44what's. Being seen right and and they'll
- 6:46put themselves out here in the world and they'll come across as
- 6:50some kind of expert. So the name of this?
- 6:54Episode or the topic or rather of this episode right is is you
- 6:57know this the, the trap of spiritual ego within Heathenry
- 7:02now. And when I say spiritually go
- 7:05right, I'm not talking about genuine confidence.
- 7:08I'm not talking about people who have the right credentials or
- 7:16the right movement behind what they're doing to say with a
- 7:23surety the things that they say. I'm talking about people that,
- 7:30again, you know, through their spirituality, get this.
- 7:34Sense of self that becomes inflated, like I said, you know,
- 7:41people that present themselves as an authority without any sort
- 7:44of depth behind it. Yeah, I picked up the whole of
- 7:49them all once. Or, you know, I read the poetic
- 7:51era or I'm, you know, I got my 23andMe results back and I am,
- 7:55you know, .0967% Viking or whatever.
- 8:01And. Stuff like that, right?
- 8:02Stuff that just. And believe and believe me,
- 8:04there are people out here that that will start up a channel,
- 8:08they'll create a TikTok account or they'll post on Instagram or
- 8:12wherever, right? And it's all for show.
- 8:15You know, that's like one example I can think of.
- 8:19Also, even if they're not putting themselves out on the
- 8:22Internet, they are still putting themselves out in their
- 8:25communities through, yeah, just just themselves, right?
- 8:32Just positioning themselves as being some sort of expert and
- 8:36and treating their personal experiences.
- 8:39While are while. While important and and they do
- 8:43have a place we'll get into that in this episode, but you know,
- 8:47treating their personal experiences as universal truth.
- 8:51We've covered things are like this and other episodes I've
- 8:54talked around, you know, the the validity of unverified personal
- 8:58gnosis, but being careful to make sure that that does not get
- 9:03positioned as truth or as fact or anything like that from
- 9:08reconstruction and perspectives or any sort of historical
- 9:12accuracy. There's folks out here that
- 9:17crave. And almost need the recognition
- 9:21or validation or status or title to be able to feel like.
- 9:25They're doing what they're doing properly.
- 9:29You know, it's like they use the path, they use the, the, the
- 9:34journey, if you, if you will, or along their journey on the path
- 9:38that they use it to elevate themselves above other people,
- 9:45kind of, you know. Like they're the, you know, the
- 9:49the authority that needs to be listened to to make sure that
- 9:54you're doing things correctly or or or or properly.
- 9:57So the path that they're on. These types that I'm talking
- 10:01about, right, giving me some examples becomes less about
- 10:05transformation and more about their own self importance.
- 10:12And like I said, I'm sure that this doesn't come as as any sort
- 10:16of shock or surprise that people like this right here.
- 10:19I'm sure you if you have been in the heathen community, the wider
- 10:25heathen community for any length of time.
- 10:29You've experienced this, you've seen creators come out there and
- 10:33you've seen people. Position themselves in their
- 10:35local communities if you have one and then some of the
- 10:39examples that I just gave manifest themselves with these
- 10:43people. And if you have and you want to
- 10:45share your your experience or share an example of something
- 10:50that you've seen along these lines, again, you can comment
- 10:53down below. If you're watching this on
- 10:55Patreon, if you're watching this on or listening to this on any
- 10:59of the audio platforms, I think Spotify has a comment option.
- 11:02So feel free to comment. Or you can write into the
- 11:04podcast at midgardmusingstn@gmail.com.
- 11:10You can also call the POP podcast hotline, which is
- 11:13615-671-9832. Share your thoughts if you have
- 11:18one about this particular topic. But yeah.
- 11:23This is this is a thing. It's nothing new.
- 11:25It's been happening for us as long as probably has been.
- 11:29People have been people, you know what I mean?
- 11:32And this isn't just a heathen thing, but we're talking about
- 11:36this type of thing within the heathen community.
- 11:40So as I like to do a lot of times, I like to have some, if
- 11:45any, historical sources or any sort of sources that we can look
- 11:49to for examples on the type of topic that we cover here on the
- 11:54show. And.
- 11:59There are plenty of examples in in heathen sources that kind of
- 12:04warn against overconfidence when it comes to wisdom action.
- 12:10You know what I mean? Doing things, saying things,
- 12:13speaking things, especially, you know, the Speaking of things.
- 12:17There are stanzas throughout the Hove of them all.
- 12:21And again, as we talk about heathen beliefs or heathen
- 12:25worldviews, the Hove of them all always comes up.
- 12:28But I do want to always preface what I'm about to say in case
- 12:31this is your first time listening to this show.
- 12:34We're being exposed to my content.
- 12:37I have never, will never position the Hove of them all as
- 12:41some sort of equivalent to like the.
- 12:45Christian Bible. It's not a heathen book of
- 12:47instructions. It's practical wisdom, practical
- 12:50knowledge, things that. If you read them in the context
- 12:56of the time of history that it was written in, it reflects
- 13:01certain world views and and things of the people at the
- 13:04time. So it's very specific to that,
- 13:07but it is good. A lot of it is just good
- 13:08practical, common sense type stuff.
- 13:12So there are some standards. I don't have them memorized by,
- 13:15you know, verse number or stanza number or whatever, but there's
- 13:19there's a stanza that kind of talks about, you know, like the
- 13:21fool believes that he knows everything and he won't shut up
- 13:24about it. There's also places.
- 13:29Within that poem, that kind of applaud or congratulate or
- 13:34encourage a wise person and and, and.
- 13:39The good behavior of a wise. Person is that they listen
- 13:41carefully, they observe, they are mindful.
- 13:45They they speak carefully. You know they're not just.
- 13:49Blah blah blah blah blah. Talk in a big game, think you
- 13:52know, making it sound good using using.
- 13:55Big words with many syllables and so forth, you know, and then
- 14:01we also see not just in the, not just in the hover mall, but, you
- 14:06know, we see the importance of what a person's reputation is in
- 14:12society, their giffrain, their reputation.
- 14:17But it's always something that is earned, right?
- 14:19A reputation is earned. The infamous stanza, I think
- 14:22it's 127. No No 76.
- 14:28It's somewhere in like the 757677 area of of the Hoffman
- 14:32Mall that talks. You know the infamous cattle die
- 14:34kinsman, die you yourself. Will also die.
- 14:36And one thing that this is I know will never die is is the
- 14:39reputation of the one who has earned it or the fair fame of
- 14:44one who has earned it or different translations say
- 14:46different things. But the the point is that
- 14:49reputation, fair fame, these honour things of of of a status
- 14:54of of honour. Are earned, they are not
- 14:58claimed, you know. You have to take it.
- 15:04It takes. Time to accumulate a good
- 15:07reputation it takes time to accumulate fair fame it's not
- 15:11just something that you can walk into a town or walk into a
- 15:14village or walk into a city or join a community you know, and
- 15:19make this claim you know what I mean like we'll just say for.
- 15:25Example. I'll use myself, you know, as
- 15:30the example and and OK, I have, you know, been doing.
- 15:33Content for seven seasons and eight years or whatever it's
- 15:37been, you know, almost a decade worth of time spent on the
- 15:40Internet putting myself out here and you know, maybe my
- 15:45reputation by and large has been that of good you know, people
- 15:50generally support what I have to say there's.
- 15:52Always going to be the naysayers.
- 15:53There's always going to be the trolls, there's always going to
- 15:55be the haters. Kind of one of those things
- 15:57where if you are putting yourself out here and and you're
- 16:00doing good work. The benchmark that kind of lets
- 16:04you know you're on the right track is when you have people
- 16:07who mostly support you, but then you got those ones that come in
- 16:09and want to, you know, stir the pot and just troll you all the
- 16:15time. And I've.
- 16:16Had and still have plenty of those.
- 16:19But anyway, the point being is that if I go somewhere where
- 16:22I've never been heard of, I don't have a reputation and and
- 16:28they go, who are you? And you know.
- 16:29What's your claim and this and that I could claim it?
- 16:32But if I sad, you know, it would be better for me to show.
- 16:37Them right, let me show you what I have to offer.
- 16:39Let me show you my worth. Let me show you through deeds,
- 16:43through actions, rather than saying well.
- 16:46Yes, I am. I am he who is from Midgard
- 16:49Musings, you see. And I and I have a podcast from
- 16:52seven seasons and all this big talk and all that doesn't
- 16:58matter. The works matter.
- 16:59The deeds matter. Now the deeds will speak for
- 17:02themselves and people can see that.
- 17:05But you know, that's that's like one example I could give and
- 17:10even, you know, in the sources, right.
- 17:12I'll go back to the whole of them all with with some of the
- 17:15words of wisdom and the warnings that or the admonitions that
- 17:18come from that piece of literature.
- 17:22We don't see people being, you know, applauded or praised for
- 17:28just being the loudest voice and saying the most and talking the
- 17:31most, which it's more about the measured speech.
- 17:36You know, showing carefulness, thoughtfulness, the.
- 17:44Yeah, not just going out here and and yapping your jaw.
- 17:50You could see. Throughout other sources as
- 17:52well, if you want to look at some of the sagas I can think
- 17:55of, you know a Gil's Saga and Y'all's Saga as another one.
- 18:01Plenty of other sagas here, but those are just a couple that
- 18:03come to mind. Where in the the characters that
- 18:06the the people in the sagas are you know?
- 18:11There's there's, there's different characters, there's.
- 18:13Different people you, you know, and the ones who tend to.
- 18:16Act in ways that are prideful, if you will.
- 18:26They don't. They don't let the thing that
- 18:30happened or the thing that was done to them sink in.
- 18:33They, they, they. React to it instead of respond.
- 18:36The people that generally in these that that do stuff like
- 18:39that in the stories are are. They often just bring themselves
- 18:42to ruin, you know, arguments. Escalate into feuds because of
- 18:51ego. And it's like it's wisdom tied
- 19:00to restraint, right? Thinking of before you act.
- 19:05There's times when action is required without too much
- 19:07forethought. But in the majority of of
- 19:11things, you know, if you just take the time to think about
- 19:14what you're going to do before you do it, you'll come out.
- 19:17Better for it, it'll be a better outcome.
- 19:23So yeah, these feuds that escalate because of ego.
- 19:27Is not wisdom tied to restraint. It's, it's about dominance.
- 19:30It's about you know, you insulted me.
- 19:34This you you know and and. Are you killed?
- 19:38You know, you stole. You did this to me.
- 19:39Now I got to do back to you the vengeance, you know, and all
- 19:41that. So I like to think about this
- 19:45too, because as I was coming up with this podcast episode and
- 19:50I'm thinking where to go with it.
- 19:54You know, I can't help but think like the the general air about
- 20:01what heathen tends to attract, right?
- 20:04Are these people who are so bold in their in their ways, you know
- 20:09what I mean? Or they.
- 20:09Like it they like. They like the idea of healer
- 20:12because of its boldness, right? And you don't take any crap and
- 20:15you don't, you know, you answer, you know.
- 20:21Treachery with betrayal. This.
- 20:23Is another line in the hall of them all that often times gets
- 20:27positioned or leveraged to excuse or justify why if
- 20:32somebody mistreats you, you should mistreat them in return
- 20:34and all of this. But I got to thinking, you know,
- 20:39and sure, you can read it in that context, but what if, what
- 20:42if those? What if those things that were
- 20:45written about as? The world view of the people.
- 20:50In in the society at the time, it worked.
- 20:53There it it. But what if we look at it from
- 20:55our angle now go, OK, we're heathens in modern times, some
- 20:58of these things don't practically fit into our current
- 21:03society. And even back in the day when
- 21:08they were a part of society, how much better worth could things
- 21:12have gone if you know, like how many, how many, how many feuds,
- 21:17how many blood feuds could have been avoided in the sagas if
- 21:22people just didn't let their pride get wounded?
- 21:26You know? So I like to, I like to consider
- 21:31me personally, right? I like to consider these sagas
- 21:34as warnings, as examples of, yes, this is probably something
- 21:40that happened or something close to it that happened, but we're
- 21:43reading it now in our modern era.
- 21:44So they can be seen as warnings of, hey, don't do this.
- 21:47This is not the smart way to behave.
- 21:49This is not a good way to behave.
- 21:50This is not a way of honor. You know, we don't want to
- 21:54congratulate or admire, you know, inflated egos and the
- 21:58behaviors that come with it because it's dangerous.
- 22:01It can cause problems to things. It can damage the the threads of
- 22:06our weird and and others so much.
- 22:09So. So yeah, me personally, I would,
- 22:12I would, I like to learn what I can from the sagas and then take
- 22:19them into context as many times warnings on what not to do, not
- 22:26necessarily what to do. And you know, that's my take on
- 22:33it. So your take might be different.
- 22:35Feel free to again share your thoughts in the comments if you
- 22:39can. So actions, right?
- 22:46What leads up to actions are the things that are, are said before
- 22:49the action takes place. A lot of times we're, we're
- 22:52seeing egos getting stroked or we're seeing insults getting
- 22:56thrown. We're seeing words being flung
- 22:59around like daggers and and in these old sources in in the
- 23:05literature quite often what we. See is that, you know, they're
- 23:11showing a deep awareness of the power of speech.
- 23:15Words are magic. They weave spells.
- 23:20That's why it's called spelling. I've know you've all heard that
- 23:22term before. It's not an original quote, but
- 23:27when a one key thing to to keep in mind is it when it comes to.
- 23:33The the the. When it comes to the outcome of
- 23:38certain things, I'll words, things that are spoken like
- 23:42we'll say maybe curses or unneeding, you know, or, or or
- 23:47something, it's solemn things. It's, it's, it's words and yes,
- 23:54words overall, I believe you know.
- 23:56But but especially words of of like destruction or curses,
- 23:59right we see through the sources that they were treated as
- 24:03potent, strong. Forces in that society, right?
- 24:12No less than today. Or words again.
- 24:15Carry power. So if that's the case, and if we
- 24:18can confidently say that words have power and we even see.
- 24:23In older sources, that that concept was known then speaking
- 24:29carelessly, arrogantly, has consequences not that far of a
- 24:36stretch to come to that conclusion.
- 24:42It's kind of like the modern, you know, don't the modern
- 24:45phrase. Or, you know, something along
- 24:47the lines of, you know, don't, don't, don't write checks with
- 24:52your mouth that your hands can't cash.
- 24:55You know, don't talk. About it be about.
- 24:57It talk shit, get hit. These are modern things that
- 25:03that people are aware of what you know, our words have
- 25:06consequences. And even the gods show what the
- 25:14cost of the ego can bring. OK, look at Loki for.
- 25:21Example, I know Loki doesn't get a whole lot of attention on this
- 25:24particular show. His his presence in the sources
- 25:32is much later than other gods and goddesses even it doesn't
- 25:39and and and he seems to be primarily a a God that is
- 25:47appears and and again, the much like Snorri and and later on.
- 25:50It's it's it's hard to say for sure with confidence through
- 25:56other sources that we have that Loki was a known figure amongst
- 26:01the Scandinavian people. Definitely nothing like that or
- 26:06or definitely not on the continent.
- 26:08This. Figure Loki is a figure in the
- 26:11sources did not migrate from the continental areas of of Europe
- 26:16up up to the far north, but as a figure in the later sources.
- 26:21Whether it's the Poetic Edda, Prose Edda, what have you, he
- 26:27definitely is. Recognize they're seen as a a
- 26:30force of chaos or disruption, you know, I mean.
- 26:36He's constantly embodying characteristics of breaking
- 26:41boundaries and even mockery. Look at the Locus Center.
- 26:46You know he literally comes uninvited to a feast, half
- 26:50ripped off of his off of his butt and starts insulting
- 26:54everybody there now. Whether or not the the things
- 26:59that he was exposing were true, because they were.
- 27:04The things that he was saying and this isn't this is this is
- 27:07an important thing that I wanted to bring up, even though the
- 27:09things that Loki was was accusing the gods and goddesses
- 27:12of in Aegon's halt in the locus in a poem, even though they
- 27:16were. True.
- 27:19And he exposes those truths. Even though that's the case,
- 27:29he's doing so with a destructive agenda.
- 27:36People might look at it. And and, and have a take on it
- 27:40that's different than mine, and that's OK.
- 27:41You might, you might, you might look at Loki in in, in that
- 27:45context and see. Well, no, he was.
- 27:47He was the necessary force to bring about this this, you know,
- 27:55this awareness, right? My point for it though, is that
- 27:59being right doesn't make you wise.
- 28:03And delivery matters. Intention matters.
- 28:07I've had to personally wrestle with this myself.
- 28:10Umm, and come to a realization myself personally.
- 28:17That just because facts are facts and truth is truth.
- 28:25Sometimes that truth, sometimes those facts needs to be.
- 28:31Kept silent. Not all truths are meant to be
- 28:35exposed. Not all facts are meant to be
- 28:38revealed. And this is especially.
- 28:40Hard when we're dealing with people who we care about or who
- 28:44we love, or if we arrive. At a point in our spirituality
- 28:48that we feel we have been enlightened or that we feel we
- 28:51have been awakened to some universal truths, that everybody
- 28:56should be awakened to them as well.
- 28:58Everybody should know what I know, because how much better
- 29:02would we all be if we did? And this is where the ego comes
- 29:08in, that I want everybody to know what I know.
- 29:14It's not for everybody to know. You didn't.
- 29:15I didn't know the things that I know now.
- 29:18Before it was time for me to know them.
- 29:20Before I was awakened to them, before I did my own inner work
- 29:25and my own spiritual, you know, discoveries were made, were made
- 29:30clear. It's it's not for me to show
- 29:37others they will find it themselves.
- 29:39We can, we can be a sort of beacon, We can be, we can be a
- 29:47light. In the darkness, as it were.
- 29:49I know that sounds kind of cliche.
- 29:53But for people. Out here that you know watch my
- 29:55content or or have listened to me over the years.
- 29:58If you go back even just a few years ago, you know there have
- 30:02been. Gradual things about my content.
- 30:04I was actually watching a clip of my own material from like
- 30:11probably. Four years ago.
- 30:17And yeah, it was a 5 minute clip.
- 30:22And in the clip I'm like the things that I'm talking about
- 30:26makes sense. But the way that I was saying I
- 30:30could, I could. Sense my own bitterness.
- 30:33I could sense my own anger coming through towards other
- 30:38people, towards the kin of mine. I was not naming names, but I
- 30:44was being very targeted in my approach on it.
- 30:46And that that's, that's not how I want to be, you know, anymore.
- 30:55It comes through. It does creep in.
- 30:57There are times where I'm like, I'm going to make a Facebook
- 30:59post or I'm going to post something on my channel.
- 31:02I'm going to, you know, reveal something of a truth.
- 31:11And the agenda behind it is to, in a sort of backhanded way,
- 31:16target an individual or individuals.
- 31:21You have to be careful with that, you know, because what is,
- 31:23what is what you're doing actually for?
- 31:26It's not for the right reasons. It's it's for stroking your own
- 31:30ego, my own ego, knowing that I posted something here that
- 31:34people are not going to see and they're going to react to it.
- 31:36They're not going to know the context of things that I know.
- 31:38The men, they're going to get something out of it perhaps.
- 31:40And they're going to, yeah, you know, way to go.
- 31:42And that's, and that's so much of what happens with anybody
- 31:46that I don't care who you are, you put yourself out here on the
- 31:50Internet. This is a trap that is easily.
- 31:52Falling into there's a cost of knowing things.
- 31:58Odin famously exposes that truth, but he does so when in
- 32:05such a way that is not. It's just an awareness sort of
- 32:09thing. It's a hate, you know.
- 32:13This is what? Happens when you go looking for
- 32:17answers, the things that you didn't know and that maybe you
- 32:21shouldn't know. And if you really pry and if you
- 32:23really dig and you go so far into that, that madness, you're
- 32:30going to you're going to come out on the other side.
- 32:34Scarred, you know, a lot of people like to exalt.
- 32:40Odin in their views as you know, the high one and and.
- 32:48Wise father. Victory Father.
- 32:49All Father. All the names that he gets
- 32:51right, man, talk about stroking an ego.
- 32:55The guy has hundreds of names attested to him because of all
- 33:00the things that he's associated with or known for or has done.
- 33:03So yeah, sure, he's he's a knowledge seeker.
- 33:08But he's a he's, he's sacrificed so much for it and it's resulted
- 33:12in suffering. Yes, he's gained the the wisdom
- 33:16of the runes and the mysteries, but he literally hung himself
- 33:20for a week and 1/2 on Idris Hill in order to do it in agony.
- 33:24No food, no drink, pierced by his own spear, cold and windy.
- 33:32You know, it's not something that you can just claim cheaply.
- 33:39This knowledge, this, this, these gifts, these things, they
- 33:41come with a price. It comes with a cost.
- 33:45So there's a. Very distinct difference between
- 33:48earning wisdom and performing wisdom, anybody?
- 33:53Can pick up a book. Watch some YouTube videos, you
- 33:58know, listen to a bunch of podcasts or whatever, agree or
- 34:02not agree with what's being said, and they come up with
- 34:04their own approach and their own opinion on how to tell the world
- 34:09what they think. Anybody can do that?
- 34:12A lot of people have a lot of people are a lot of people will
- 34:17that performative behavior. It's a, you know, it's and I've
- 34:25been, you know, I've been doing this now for a long enough time
- 34:28that I can confidently speak on this.
- 34:31There was a time where none of what I'm saying right now should
- 34:35have been coming out of my mouth, you know, and it didn't.
- 34:39There were, there was actually one at one point in time where I
- 34:42was going to do a video on a book on heathen customs and, and
- 34:54what are called thus. And the book is pretty infamous
- 34:59in the heathen community. It's called We are Our Deeds.
- 35:02And I thought, yeah, I'm going to, I've read this book now.
- 35:05I literally read it one time. I referenced it several times,
- 35:09but I read it just the one time, you know, I was a baby heathen,
- 35:13man. I'd been, you know, I'd barely
- 35:17had I'd, I'd barely been a heathen for a couple of years at
- 35:21that point. I'm about to put a video out on
- 35:23my YouTube channel that I just created to talk about my
- 35:26interpretation of things. And I got checked on that,
- 35:30rightly so. Talking about you have no
- 35:33business speaking on any of these things.
- 35:36You have no, You have no idea when any of these things even
- 35:39mean. You haven't experienced them
- 35:41yet. You haven't.
- 35:42Just because you've. Acquired the knowledge of the
- 35:46book and just because you've read it one time, just because
- 35:48you've, you know, referenced it here or there, you think it's,
- 35:53you know, meaningful of this or that does not put you in a
- 35:56position of authority to speak on it.
- 36:01So stand down. Is what it was basically told to
- 36:06me like that so. And I did.
- 36:07I took that. It was a harsh lesson for me to
- 36:10learn at the time, but I realized that, yeah, you know
- 36:11what? I'm out of my lane.
- 36:13I need and I need to stay in my lane.
- 36:18So let's bring some of these things into.
- 36:21Today and we're talking about. Source materials and the sagas
- 36:24and you know, the gods and, and all of this and bring it into,
- 36:31let's bring it into our modern world people.
- 36:33Let's let's talk about identity over practice, because I think
- 36:40in modern heathen spaces today it becomes very easy to identify
- 36:44as something, whether it's being shaped by the aesthetic.
- 36:50Right. You like the look of the tunic
- 36:51or the dress or the furs or the. Hairstyles, right?
- 36:57Whatever the thing might be, or you, you again, you become
- 37:03really integrated into a community and you see.
- 37:05People with titles of. Leadership, you know, go the
- 37:10this and Chieftain that and you're all so and so, right?
- 37:17You've got content creators looking cool, sounding cool,
- 37:23doing cool things, right? Maybe you want your own online
- 37:27persona? This identity over.
- 37:35Practice is a very slippery slope because yes, our.
- 37:45Identity does have an aesthetic. A heathen identity does have an
- 37:50aesthetic, but it also doesn't. It's not going to make or break
- 37:54you. As a person to have.
- 37:56A tunic or have furs or have axes and all these kind, you
- 37:59know what I mean? Like if you really want to have
- 38:01a heathen identity then put on a comfortable cotton pair of pants
- 38:08and and. Over shirt, maybe tunic, right
- 38:11And pick up a hoe, Pick up a shovel, pick up a rake, pick up
- 38:14a don't pick up a like pick up a garden tool.
- 38:16Not to realize what I said there.
- 38:19Kids don't go out picking up hoes.
- 38:24Don't clip that, but anyway, live in the country, be a
- 38:30gardener, be a be be somebody who lives off the country
- 38:32because that's a heat that's that's even identity right
- 38:35there. The country.
- 38:38Dwellers the the the the heath dwellers.
- 38:40It's what to be. Heathen is and right have a have
- 38:43a relationship with the land. You can do that in a pair of you
- 38:48know a pair of jeans and T-shirt, shorts and flip flops,
- 38:52tank top, whatever. You know, you ain't got to have
- 38:54a a whole ensemble or whatever. It's nice if you want to.
- 38:59I mean, it's, you know, nothing against it.
- 39:00Obviously I do. I have tunics that have been
- 39:02gifts. I have, you know, certain things
- 39:05that definitely have a certain appeal to them for.
- 39:09The aesthetic that they bring. But it does not define my.
- 39:14Practice. I practice Heathenry every day
- 39:18outside of these threads, you know.
- 39:24That's what it's about. Another one again, we talked
- 39:28earlier in the show or I mentioned earlier on in the show
- 39:31about UPG unverified personal gnosis.
- 39:36Seems to me that they are still people.
- 39:38Out here that come to Heathenry that have their UPG, they're
- 39:44warned about it. Maybe they for a time.
- 39:48Feel like it needs to be quenched or or not given any
- 39:51sort of attention to. This is not what I'm about to
- 39:54say does not. I don't want this to be
- 39:56misconstrued. I do think that there is value
- 39:59and there is valid placement it within our heathen practices for
- 40:04UPG because at one point in time the traditions that we have now
- 40:09were someone's UPG. They didn't have a source to go
- 40:12off of, they had their experiences.
- 40:17But one of the one of the one of the things that we need to be
- 40:20careful of in modern times is. Because we have these sources,
- 40:23because we have things that were known as traditions of a certain
- 40:28culture, It's, it's very, we have to be very careful about.
- 40:32Presenting our own UPG, our own unverified personal notices as
- 40:35authority. And I think there's some people
- 40:38out here that are still taking that and doing that.
- 40:42It's, it's a real issue the, you know, presenting our personal
- 40:46experiences as universal truth. Because you know.
- 40:50I had a dream and Odin was there.
- 40:52I, you know, was sitting outside by a river and I heard Freya or,
- 41:00and I have been. I love hearing the, the, the,
- 41:02the experiences that people have that they want to share with me.
- 41:07I am not, I'm not downplaying your personal experiences.
- 41:10I'm not, I'm not discrediting anything, but let's leave them
- 41:15there. Let's work through that where
- 41:18they where, where it belongs. Don't come out here and try to
- 41:21position it as an authority. Don't try to have your personal
- 41:25experience or anyone's personal experience be the reason why
- 41:29you're not. You're you're doing something
- 41:31that experience was for that person or for those people
- 41:34involved and how that becomes woven into the fabric of their
- 41:41weird and the people's weird around them.
- 41:46It's very specific, it's personal.
- 41:55Experience does matter, all right, You know, again, I go
- 41:59back to that experience does matter.
- 42:00Our experiences matter, but without any sort of grounding,
- 42:04without any sort of knowing of. Source.
- 42:11I guess this is the best way I could put it.
- 42:13And it just becomes, you know, a self reinforcement or self
- 42:17reinforcing action, you know. This is how the gods behave all
- 42:23the time because of what I. Experienced just this one time.
- 42:32It can, really. Inflate the ego along with
- 42:35things like titles and status, right?
- 42:38Status, status, whatever. Talk a little bit about that a
- 42:42second. Ago, you know.
- 42:44Where people love to have a title.
- 42:51They love to be known by something other than who they
- 42:55are, other than their name. They love to have a title in
- 42:57front of their name. The Reverend of this, which is
- 43:00crazy. First of all, to have a Pagan
- 43:06person adopt. A.
- 43:08A title of, of Christian authority, the Reverend so and
- 43:13so I've seen that a lot, but you know, it'll, we'll talk about
- 43:18heat in this, right? Heat in spaces where you know,
- 43:21you're the go, the I'm the go the, OR even outside of titles,
- 43:25right? Followers, making sure that
- 43:28you're growing your followers on, on your personal or your
- 43:32platforms, right? Tik Toks and Instagrams and
- 43:34YouTube and whatever and trying to trying to position yourself
- 43:45as an authority or you know, I keep saying yourselves, guys,
- 43:50don't, don't don't mind how you're trying to scold people or
- 43:53or whatever, but you know, themselves, we the people out
- 43:56here trying to position themselves in a position of.
- 43:57Authority because their platform has influence or they want their
- 44:01platform to be influential and they want to be an influencer
- 44:04and they want to be a creator of content and they want to, you
- 44:07know, I went through that phase too.
- 44:10So I'm speaking about this from experience.
- 44:12It's it's it's an easy. Trap to fall into for for a lot
- 44:17of folks. Some people it's not because not
- 44:20a lot of people like to be on the Internet a lot, not a lot of
- 44:22people want to have their faces or voices.
- 44:24Seen or heard? There's plenty good people out
- 44:27here that, you know, they don't want their, they don't want
- 44:32their likeness. For the world to see.
- 44:36But for those that do right? Seeking that status in spiritual
- 44:44spaces, right, you can call me go the so and so all right so.
- 44:50What if the people gave you that title?
- 44:51So what if you earned it? I mean, it's a title.
- 44:54It's like, I guess you should be proud of it if you've earned it.
- 44:58And if it's a deed name that you've been assigned to your
- 45:02people, but you know what I mean, that have have bestowed it
- 45:05upon you. But don't get carried away with
- 45:07it. Don't you know it's important to
- 45:12remember? That right?
- 45:13Like just because we've grown spiritually as individuals,
- 45:18right? Talk about the ego.
- 45:22Doesn't go away when we are are awakened to things or we grow.
- 45:29If anything, it, it often just becomes more sophisticated and
- 45:32becomes more, you know, we become so enriched with this
- 45:36knowledge, with this, with this gift, with the wisdoms, with
- 45:42the, with the this and with the that that, umm, sometimes our
- 45:47egos become so. Sophisticated that it.
- 45:49Keeping it in check is even harder than before.
- 45:54Can confirm. Right, that is something that
- 45:56I've definitely struggled with. So why is this a problem?
- 46:11Well, first of all. This behavior can can cause
- 46:21tradition to be distorted because the people that see the
- 46:29behavior will assign that to the way.
- 46:35They won't know any better. The newcomers, right?
- 46:37The people that. Have no idea, You know, maybe
- 46:43they're discovering a path themselves and they're coming
- 46:45into contact. With these types of individuals
- 46:49who have. Fallen into that.
- 46:53Trap of of you know that spiritual ego so that can
- 47:02distort the tradition of what? Things truly are and have been
- 47:06and how we carry those old ways now into the into the modern era
- 47:12and. So what people who don't know
- 47:15about the traditions see is a path that feels.
- 47:18Centered around individuals, not values, not not not not
- 47:26traditions. And it's no surprise to me that
- 47:31this is a. This is something that we're
- 47:33talking about because I've, I've, when I first came into
- 47:37heathen, you know, one of the things that I thought was
- 47:39appealing to me about it was the fact.
- 47:41That I can be, I can be my own individual, I can do my own
- 47:45thing. There's no rules.
- 47:47It's my way. I heathen how I want to heathen.
- 47:51And there's, you know, there's no book of instructions that
- 47:54tell me one way to. Be and I have to do it.
- 47:56And if I don't, you know I'm going to be punished by the gods
- 48:00or this or that. How liberating is that kind of a
- 48:03feeling? And I think what we've lost
- 48:06sight of is the fact that while there might not be any of those
- 48:11types of things going on in Heathrow, no books of
- 48:13instructions, no equivalents to Bibles or anything like that,
- 48:17there are absolutely ways of doing things that are proper.
- 48:22It is an orthopraxic belief system.
- 48:25He then reads. It's there are proper ways and
- 48:27right ways and correct ways of doing things.
- 48:30And there are incorrect and improper and wrong ways of doing
- 48:33things, and if that offends you, I'm sorry, get over.
- 48:37It it's just the way it is. That's the truth.
- 48:40There are proper. Ways of doing things and there
- 48:42are improper ways of doing things and if you're going to if
- 48:50you're going to do something and call it something that it needs
- 48:52to be done the. Proper.
- 48:53Way like or at least acknowledged.
- 48:59You know, hey, you want to stumble?
- 49:02Great. Where you want to do it?
- 49:04Oh, let's go do it around the campfire.
- 49:05Well, then it's not. A stumble, not a stumble
- 49:07anymore, if you're outdoors and there's enough historical
- 49:12information that backs that up, so call it something else.
- 49:16Go drink your drinks around the fire and and hail the gods and
- 49:20hail your ancestors and hail the heroes and give your toasts or
- 49:24boasts right. Do it in a circle.
- 49:26Share a horn if you want. None of that is historical
- 49:29symbol. You can call it something else,
- 49:32but it's important that we make these distinctions.
- 49:35Otherwise the tradition gets distorted, right?
- 49:41And that weakens communities. Because then people's people see
- 49:48the truth of things. It creates, it creates this lack
- 49:51of trust, it creates unnecessary conflict.
- 49:53There's, there's, there's struggles between.
- 49:57Who's right and who's wrong? Well, the go the.
- 50:00Said this so he must or she must be right.
- 50:03Why? Because they have this title
- 50:05that they picked up or that was. Given to them or whatever,
- 50:08right. And it's, you know, come so
- 50:11fragmented and then you know, and, and by just by by just that
- 50:18alone, it it halts personal growth.
- 50:21You're all stuck on those things, the individual things,
- 50:29not the, not the core values of things, you know, umm, and I'm
- 50:39not the biggest, you know, I'm not like I'm not a Jungian.
- 50:42I like a lot of Carl Jung's philosophies.
- 50:47Umm, Nietzsche. You know, I like a lot of
- 50:49different philosophers. Concepts on on the ego, but the
- 50:54ego can actually reinforce itself through religion quite
- 51:00quite famously, you know. So if our beliefs are always
- 51:08confirming us, then we have we have a bit of an issue, right?
- 51:16We're not being challenged. We're we're, we're, we're just
- 51:21being reinforced. Our egos are being.
- 51:24Stroked so kind of counterbalances this, right?
- 51:33Bringing it back to a. Heathen way of it.
- 51:39The reputation, a good reputation, fair fame.
- 51:45That takes time. You don't declare something.
- 51:50Of worth upon yourself it was. First of all, your worth was
- 51:58demonstrated and then it was assigned.
- 52:04To you, by your people. Your worth was determined by
- 52:08what you did, not what you proclaimed or made a declaration
- 52:12of, like Beowulf. Didn't just come into, you know,
- 52:21was it Frothgar? He didn't just come into that
- 52:24hall talking about he can kill Grendel without being challenged
- 52:32about it, first of all, without being without that, that boast
- 52:35being challenged. He went on and he showed.
- 52:42That what he said he could do, he could do.
- 52:45He demonstrates it. We are such a.
- 52:56Widely dispersed or displaced society nowadays there's there's
- 53:00so much of us like for for. Most of us here in the United
- 53:03States that live east of the Mississippi, we, we are so
- 53:11concentrated, yet we are. So dispersed, like I said,
- 53:17there's more people population wise on the eastern half of the
- 53:22United. States than there are in the
- 53:24western half of the United States and yet I see more people
- 53:31and you know, just because I see it doesn't mean that it's always
- 53:35true right I again my my my my point of view isn't the final
- 53:42authority either but as I say, it's interesting to see you know
- 53:45people on the West Coast of the United States, which by and
- 53:52large is a much more. Not as densely populated area as
- 53:56the eastern East Coast or the eastern half of the United
- 53:59States is they seem to be. More closely knit out there than
- 54:03we are over here. And we again, we're more densely
- 54:05populated. We have more people in areas
- 54:08than they do. And yet we just we're so
- 54:13dispersed. We don't, I had, you know, we
- 54:15had our, we had a cigar bloat gathering here.
- 54:22At my house and my wife's house here last week and just had a
- 54:27few people over, a few of our nearest friends and say Ken, you
- 54:30know our our Ken folk, even though they're not related by
- 54:33blood, they are every bit of family to us.
- 54:38And it was like, man, this is so great.
- 54:40Like, why does it? Why does it go so long?
- 54:42Why we wait? You know, whether it's waiting
- 54:45purposefully or just time escapes you.
- 54:48You know, you don't realize just how long it's been since we hung
- 54:50out together, since we've done anything of, of meaning
- 54:54together. So things like that should be
- 55:01happening more because it's, you know, it's about positioning
- 55:05community over. Self.
- 55:10You know, working and weaving our we are together and and
- 55:14strengthening bonds together, not just growing ourselves.
- 55:20Right, that's it's day-to-day. Yes, that's what we that's what
- 55:24we should be doing. We should also.
- 55:26Be working with each other in our communities and and
- 55:29strengthening those bonds because that is definitely a
- 55:35value that is definitely traditional values of of of a
- 55:38heathen society from those old, from those old ways.
- 55:43They were kin based societies. They were obligation driven.
- 55:50You are my kin. I am yours.
- 55:52You are mine. We got each other's backs, you
- 55:57know, and focus was on reputation.
- 55:59Your reputation mattered. To have a poor reputation could
- 56:05mean the difference between whether you survived the winter
- 56:08or not, whether you ate. Well, or not.
- 56:12So it wasn't about this reputation because I want people
- 56:15to to, to think of me as as being, you know, Jesse's cool or
- 56:19Jesse's awesome or this or that. Now as I want people to know
- 56:23that Jesse's a good person, an honorable man.
- 56:26And that should Jesse need something because of his
- 56:28reputation, of course we're going to help him because he's
- 56:31got a good reputation. If somebody has a bad
- 56:33reputation, and this is even true in modern context, guys and
- 56:36gals, right? I mean, how many people have you
- 56:38come in contact with that your acquaintances, you know them,
- 56:44you don't really call yourself friends, but you're familiar
- 56:46with one another and man, that that there's just that one
- 56:50person that is like, you know what, he's all right, she's all
- 56:55right, but. Not going to not going to answer
- 57:01a phone call at one of the morning forum if they're having
- 57:04a rough time there, you know, let them figure it out on their
- 57:06own. You know, I want to be the
- 57:09person with the right people, not with everybody, but I do
- 57:13want to have the reputation of being there for people that or,
- 57:16you know, and living in ways that are honorable now that if I
- 57:22need something from somebody, there's no hesitation.
- 57:27It's, you know, I have access to that because I've earned it.
- 57:34That's what I'm talking about. Reputation focus, not for the
- 57:37self, not to inflate the ego to you know, like I'm a great
- 57:40person and everybody thinks so you know, it's it's to have
- 57:44those bonds of strength that those those Frith bound
- 57:49connections, because you know. Discipline should should ride
- 58:00over expression. We talked about this last week
- 58:03with Patrick. You know what you do repeatedly
- 58:09matters more than what you say occasionally or what you.
- 58:13It sure might sound good, but having that discipline, that's
- 58:20what matters. It's It's more than just an
- 58:22expression. And you know.
- 58:27If I have. To sit with something of a hard
- 58:29truth that, again, it's not. It's not a dig at anybody.
- 58:35It's not a dig at any group. It's, it's just a reality that I
- 58:39want to share because I've, I've sat with this truth myself.
- 58:45But if you're Heathenry nowadays, if, if the heathenry
- 58:47that we're practicing now makes anybody feel superior to others,
- 58:54OK, If the way that someone is doing something makes them feel
- 58:59superior to others, I would venture to say that that person
- 59:08or those people are not deep in the path, They're deep in
- 59:14themselves. They're so self absorbed.
- 59:18They've, they've taken so much of their experience and made it
- 59:24about themselves that that's become their identity.
- 59:32It's so, yeah, some things to think about, you know, I mean,
- 59:41at least it, you know, again, my view is not the view.
- 59:45It's if you think about what I've said today and it resonates
- 59:49with you, love to hear your thoughts about it.
- 59:51And then as you're thinking about it, I would ask yourself
- 59:54to ask the questions that I've asked myself.
- 59:58Do I? Am I seeking validation?
- 1:00:02More than growth or overgrowth, am I speaking?
- 1:00:05More than I practice am I treating my experience as
- 1:00:08unquestionable truth and then trying to put.
- 1:00:11Push that truth on others. Would I?
- 1:00:14Would I? Would I be doing any of this?
- 1:00:17If I didn't have the podcast to talk about it on, Would I be?
- 1:00:20Doing any of this, if nobody knew about it, I think these are
- 1:00:26questions that really bring what we've talked about today and put
- 1:00:32it in a in a way that we can. Move forward with and and and
- 1:00:37take that and make the right changes.
- 1:00:40Make the make the necessary changes, you know.
- 1:00:44Because listen, the goal, I see it as as any spiritual path,
- 1:00:49whether you're heathen or any other term that you refer to it.
- 1:00:54But any goal of a spiritual path isn't to inflate.
- 1:00:59Ourselves or our egos. It's it's to refine it.
- 1:01:07I've talked about certain practices and experiencing what
- 1:01:11some would call ego death. Whether it be through shadow
- 1:01:16work, whether it be through medicine, whether it be through
- 1:01:18whatever process. I mean, the ego doesn't ever
- 1:01:27truly die. It's refined.
- 1:01:29There's aspects of our ego that no longer serve us that we don't
- 1:01:34give place to. We confront it and it's and it's
- 1:01:40a refining process if. You think about what refinement
- 1:01:44is, what refining is is. It's not dumping the whole thing
- 1:01:50out. It's not throwing the bath baby
- 1:01:52out with the bathwater. It's making sure that what's
- 1:01:57there is of service and what's not of service is dissolved.
- 1:02:12So we can look at our sources as heathens we can.
- 1:02:17We can look to the poems, we can look to the sagas, We can look
- 1:02:20to. Folklore.
- 1:02:24Even now we can look to regional traditions, regional practices.
- 1:02:33And one thing that I don't think we'll see in any of these
- 1:02:38sources, no matter what source we're looking at, one thing we
- 1:02:41won't see is perfect people. We won't find perfection.
- 1:02:45Heck, we won't even see that with the gods, right?
- 1:02:51The the source is really just. They show us so many real and
- 1:02:56practical things, the consequences of our actions, the
- 1:02:58consequences of pride, the values of restraint, the the,
- 1:03:01the, the weight of a lived reputation.
- 1:03:07And if you want to walk any of any path seriously, but
- 1:03:11especially if you want to take Heathenry seriously, then you
- 1:03:16have to be willing to confront the uncomfortable things.
- 1:03:21Right. Not just.
- 1:03:23What you believe in, but the person who you're becoming
- 1:03:28through it. What your beliefs are?
- 1:03:32Shaping you into the type of person you're becoming through
- 1:03:35those beliefs so. Facing that mirror, you know,
- 1:03:46and not just. Not just in a glance.
- 1:03:48Not just when you wake up in the morning to wash your face or
- 1:03:52brush your teeth. Or comb your hair or fix your
- 1:03:55appearance, right? Not just in those fleeting
- 1:03:59moments, but really take the time.
- 1:04:04I actually did a a reflection exercise just this last month,
- 1:04:10about a month ago now. You know where I sat in it was
- 1:04:17outside, it was dark. I had candlelight to help
- 1:04:20illuminate the space in front of me, but I had a bowl of water.
- 1:04:26And I sat there for 15 minutes just looking, gazing at my
- 1:04:34reflection in the water, letting the things that were there that
- 1:04:42I maybe didn't like to see or didn't like the look of.
- 1:04:47I didn't shy away from it. I didn't, I couldn't ignore it.
- 1:04:53I didn't close my eyes to it. I didn't turn away.
- 1:04:55My face, if anything, I, I gazed more intently.
- 1:04:59I, I really tried to see what it was that was being shown to me.
- 1:05:05You know, is this something behind the mask?
- 1:05:09As it were. That is coming through that I'm
- 1:05:12being allowed to see that I need to.
- 1:05:14Either give space. To or that I need to refine,
- 1:05:18right? What am I looking at here?
- 1:05:20What am I seeing? What is what is being shown to
- 1:05:22me? And in that process and through
- 1:05:27those practices, I was given some very needed messages, some
- 1:05:35much needed medicine, if you will.
- 1:05:40And it and it that itself right there might not be a traditional
- 1:05:45heathen thing. We don't necessarily have a
- 1:05:47source that says anything about doing that, but it is an
- 1:05:51absolutely for me, it was, it was, it was a great tool to
- 1:05:55leverage in my spiritual practice.
- 1:05:58And it really gave me the, the chance to examine myself.
- 1:06:07So whether you have a physical mirror, or whether you look in
- 1:06:10the water at your reflection, or whether you close your eyes and
- 1:06:16look at yourself through your mind's eye, you know, be ready
- 1:06:22to face the ugly. Be ready to face the grim.
- 1:06:27Be ready to face the vulnerable parts of yourself, the hurt
- 1:06:35parts of yourself, the damaged parts of yourself, the wounded
- 1:06:39parts of yourself and be and give yourself that grace and
- 1:06:44realize that there's work that needs to be done and, and, and
- 1:06:47then heal through that. It's a beautiful thing.
- 1:06:52I wouldn't. I would.
- 1:06:54I guess I would part ways with you.
- 1:06:55Today on this episode with with just that, you know, don't be
- 1:07:01afraid to look in the mirror. Don't be afraid to give space to
- 1:07:06what you don't, you know, you don't want to confront.
- 1:07:10Don't let the ego be the focus. And yeah, man, that's I think
- 1:07:21that's it. That's everything I got for you
- 1:07:24this week. So again, thank you all for
