- 0:04Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. We are going to continue our list of
- 0:24Speaker 1: the top 25 athletes of the last 25 years. 10
- 0:27Speaker 1: through 6 are this episode. We're coming down the home stretch. Also,
- 0:32Speaker 1: going to talk about somebody y'all seem to hate, but
- 0:34Speaker 1: it's kind of winning me over. First, we talked on Friday,
- 0:41Speaker 1: Dominique and I, about the Michael Parsons situation and just
- 0:45Speaker 1: how simple and obvious it is that you're going to
- 0:47Speaker 1: have to pay him. I think the analogy that Dominique
- 0:50Speaker 1: made that was perfect is there are a lot of
- 0:52Speaker 1: cars that you might be able to haggle and get
- 0:54Speaker 1: a deal on, but a Lamborghini is not one of them.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And Michael Parsons is a Lamborghini. I think we all
- 1:00Speaker 1: agree that he is a Lamborghini. I believe since Dominique
- 1:04Speaker 1: and I recorded that podcast, Michael Parsons requested a trade.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I've seen some people refer to it as a trade demand. Now,
- 1:13Speaker 1: only basketball players can demand trades. Football players just ask for. OK,
- 1:20Speaker 1: that's all they can really do. And he asked for
- 1:24Speaker 1: a trade. And I don't know too much about this place. Honestly,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm not even fully assured that this place exists. But
- 1:31Speaker 1: I reckon that when people first get to hell, they
- 1:34Speaker 1: ask for ice water all the time before people tell
- 1:36Speaker 1: them that the bar is closed. They ain't got that
- 1:39Speaker 1: down there, right? It's not happening. He can ask for
- 1:42Speaker 1: this trade all he wants. He will be a Dallas
- 1:44Speaker 1: Cowboy for the next three years unless he's really willing
- 1:50Speaker 1: to pass up some checks. And as far as I
- 1:54Speaker 1: can recall, only two people have actual factual really been
- 1:59Speaker 1: willing to pass up checks in similar situations. One of
- 2:02Speaker 1: them is Sean Gilbert. And that was 30 years ago.
- 2:05Speaker 1: The other one is Le'Veon Bell. And if you follow
- 2:09Speaker 1: him on Twitter, it's clear that boy dumb as a
- 2:12Speaker 1: sack of hammers. Now, I have generally thought that the
- 2:15Speaker 1: idea of sitting out and missing those checks is really
- 2:18Speaker 1: not the worst idea in the world because you're missing checks,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but you're also missing like hits and and damage to
- 2:22Speaker 1: your body. But them boys love playing football, man. They
- 2:26Speaker 1: want to get out there and play football. I assure
- 2:28Speaker 1: you that when Michael Parsons is at these practices that
- 2:30Speaker 1: he goes to because he kind of got to, he
- 2:34Speaker 1: wants to play. He wants to get out there. And so, okay,
- 2:39Speaker 1: you want to be traded. Jerry's not trading you. Let's
- 2:44Speaker 1: just get this out of the way right now. Jerry
- 2:46Speaker 1: Jones is not trading you, period. But again, worst he
- 2:54Speaker 1: could do is say no. Doesn't really hurt you to ask.
- 2:57Speaker 1: But that's where we've gotten in this. Now, we also learn,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I think, some interesting things. And I think we may
- 3:03Speaker 1: have known this before we had Dominique on the last time.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I don't remember how in depth we talked about this,
- 3:08Speaker 1: but Jerry Jones says that he often negotiates deals directly
- 3:18Speaker 1: with players without their agents there. And what seems to
- 3:24Speaker 1: be a sticking point in this negotiation is that Jerry
- 3:31Speaker 1: felt like he had a deal. And then David Mulgetta
- 3:35Speaker 1: got involved, Michael Parsons agent. And now all of a
- 3:39Speaker 1: sudden he ain't got no deal. And Jerry refuses to
- 3:44Speaker 1: move off of the previous deal. Now, I have been
- 3:49Speaker 1: in a very similar situation where you felt like, for
- 3:52Speaker 1: whatever reason, a deal was predicated on some agreed upon fact,
- 3:59Speaker 1: whatever it happens to be, and then something happens and
- 4:02Speaker 1: now you guys have a disagreement about whether that fact
- 4:04Speaker 1: was truly agreed upon and now it gets tense, right?
- 4:08Speaker 1: I know how that goes. I also know that Jerry
- 4:11Speaker 1: know that was some snake shit. And the reason I
- 4:15Speaker 1: know that Jerry knows that's some snake shit is that
- 4:17Speaker 1: Jerry knows what an agent is for. Or if nothing else,
- 4:21Speaker 1: Jerry knows that even if he negotiates this deal directly
- 4:24Speaker 1: with the player, the player is still going to have
- 4:26Speaker 1: to pay the agent a 3%. Right? He has an
- 4:30Speaker 1: agent for a reason. And that reason is very simple,
- 4:32Speaker 1: to talk to you. That's what he's there for. It
- 4:37Speaker 1: actually reminded me of something, and I don't know if
- 4:39Speaker 1: anybody saw this a few weeks ago, maybe a few
- 4:41Speaker 1: months ago. But Cameron and Chad Johnson had some sort
- 4:46Speaker 1: of beef online. It didn't seem to be some sort
- 4:49Speaker 1: of major beef, but it was something about some money
- 4:50Speaker 1: or whatever. And Cam was making a point about how
- 4:54Speaker 1: he tried to cut some deal with Chad and Chad
- 4:59Speaker 1: told him either talk to my agent or I got
- 5:01Speaker 1: to talk to my agent. And Cam's thing was, I
- 5:05Speaker 1: guess that's just how y'all do over there. Like I
- 5:07Speaker 1: handle deals myself. I guess you football players, y'all got
- 5:11Speaker 1: to run it through other people, which He wasn't fully
- 5:15Speaker 1: offering his shade, but certainly partially, right? Oh, you can't
- 5:19Speaker 1: handle your own business. But the truth is, yes, they
- 5:22Speaker 1: do go get their agents. That is what they do.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Athlete game is a little bit different in the sense
- 5:27Speaker 1: that somebody like Cam came up getting money his own ways,
- 5:31Speaker 1: all kinds of ways, right? He's the one that's going
- 5:33Speaker 1: to stand in front of you and negotiate the deal
- 5:35Speaker 1: because in truth with rap, especially at the era in
- 5:38Speaker 1: which he came up, yeah, there were agents to get
- 5:40Speaker 1: the job done, but a lot of the cats that
- 5:42Speaker 1: was doing it was just street cats, right? There was
- 5:44Speaker 1: no reason to believe that you necessarily needed to get
- 5:45Speaker 1: somebody with this like ascribed level of expertise. I've told
- 5:50Speaker 1: you guys this all the time about being an agent, right?
- 5:53Speaker 1: I'm not saying everybody can be an agent, but anybody
- 5:56Speaker 1: can be an agent. As long as you got the stomach, right?
- 6:00Speaker 1: That's 90% of the job, maybe. It's just the stomach
- 6:03Speaker 1: to stand there and hold out for the money that
- 6:05Speaker 1: you want and an innate sense of timing and leverage.
- 6:09Speaker 1: You can do that. But football world is different in
- 6:13Speaker 1: the sense that These cats got people like rap don't
- 6:17Speaker 1: have coaches. I think it's the best way to put it, right?
- 6:20Speaker 1: There's not a culture of somebody like being there as
- 6:24Speaker 1: an advisor or whatever capacity to help guide you and
- 6:27Speaker 1: get you through the stuff and to tell you, let
- 6:29Speaker 1: me take care of this. All you got to do
- 6:30Speaker 1: is play ball. You know, there are levels of the
- 6:34Speaker 1: entertainment game where that's like that, but the rap, especially
- 6:36Speaker 1: that era of the rap gang, not quite so much, right? Anyway,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I say that to say, In that world, yes, Cameron.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You get your agent and the agent does the stuff.
- 6:51Speaker 1: That's how it goes over there. Jerry knows that's how
- 6:54Speaker 1: it goes over there. Any attempt to try to negotiate
- 6:57Speaker 1: a deal without an agent there is an attempt to
- 6:59Speaker 1: save some money. It's an attempt to get over. Maybe
- 7:02Speaker 1: the NFL need a, what they call it, I see
- 7:05Speaker 1: it on Law & Order all the time, Miranda.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Miranda.
- 7:11Speaker 1: You got to be like, well, look, You want us
- 7:13Speaker 1: to get your agent? They ain't even got to do that.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But you got to be able to be like, hey,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know, I'm going to call my, I think I'd
- 7:18Speaker 1: like to call an agent. And if you ain't even
- 7:21Speaker 1: got an agent, one is provided to you free of charge, right?
- 7:25Speaker 1: They need an NFL constitution. Now, granted, this wouldn't be
- 7:27Speaker 1: the first, this may be Amendment 38 on this constitution
- 7:31Speaker 1: that would be necessary to protect these boys. But maybe
- 7:34Speaker 1: that's what they need. I don't know. But Jerry knew
- 7:36Speaker 1: he was on some bullshit when he did that. There's
- 7:37Speaker 1: no way around that. He fully understands it. And the
- 7:40Speaker 1: idea that you're going to try to stand on it
- 7:43Speaker 1: What it does is make you seem like an unserious person.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And once it gets to the place where you got C.D.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Lamb sending tweets out saying the same old, same old.
- 7:55Speaker 1: You had Demarcus Lawrence leaving the Cowboys talking about, hey, man,
- 7:59Speaker 1: ain't nobody going to win no Super Bowl over here.
- 8:01Speaker 1: It's one thing when those of us on the outside
- 8:04Speaker 1: talk about how unserious you are. And by the way,
- 8:07Speaker 1: I'm not one of those people, generally speaking. I actually
- 8:11Speaker 1: think that throughout these 30 years since they won a
- 8:14Speaker 1: Super Bowl, Jerry has largely gotten a bad rap, right?
- 8:18Speaker 1: His ego has gotten in the way of things. But like,
- 8:21Speaker 1: for example, and this is outside of the 30 years.
- 8:27Speaker 1: If Jerry didn't run Jimmy Johnson off, Jimmy Johnson was
- 8:30Speaker 1: going to have to go, right? He was burning out.
- 8:33Speaker 1: He was burning them out. And I would like to
- 8:35Speaker 1: make the point that it's not like Jimmy Johnson went
- 8:38Speaker 1: to the Dolphins and won four Super Bowls. Just throwing
- 8:41Speaker 1: it out there, right? I think Jerry got a little
- 8:45Speaker 1: bit of a bad rap, though he was absolutely complicit
- 8:48Speaker 1: in the way that it played out. I think they've
- 8:52Speaker 1: had some bad luck at points, but I think they've
- 8:54Speaker 1: overall put together very strong rosters. They've been in an
- 8:58Speaker 1: interesting space for the last, wow, it's almost 20 years now,
- 9:04Speaker 1: of having very good but flawed quarterbacks. that had some
- 9:08Speaker 1: ceiling issues that could make it like, hey, I don't
- 9:10Speaker 1: know if you can get there with that guy. But
- 9:12Speaker 1: they've also had very good quarterbacks, one of whom was
- 9:15Speaker 1: undrafted and the other one was drafted in the fourth round.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Like they've done things correctly. They've had great players in
- 9:24Speaker 1: this stretch. They've had great rosters in this stretch. They
- 9:27Speaker 1: got Micah Parsons with the number 12 pick. Other people
- 9:30Speaker 1: had the opportunity to get that dude. Okay. You know,
- 9:33Speaker 1: there's a whole list of these things that we could
- 9:35Speaker 1: go through as it relates to him. But now you're
- 9:39Speaker 1: looking like a clown, not just a person who likes
- 9:42Speaker 1: attention because we notice about Jerry that he likes the attention.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And if any of us had to guess, he's going
- 9:47Speaker 1: to sign Michael Parsons to a really big deal right
- 9:49Speaker 1: before training camp because in part, Jerry likes the attention.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But this looks like clown behavior and your players think
- 9:58Speaker 1: it looks like clown behavior. And some players who have
- 10:01Speaker 1: been like venerated veterans for you are looking at your
- 10:04Speaker 1: operation and saying, hey, man, I need to get out
- 10:07Speaker 1: of here because I ain't a loser. And this looks
- 10:09Speaker 1: like a losing operation. That's what you're putting together. That's
- 10:14Speaker 1: what you have. And to me, that is fundamentally what
- 10:16Speaker 1: it came down to in this situation. Right? You look
- 10:22Speaker 1: like a loser right now. And you can't do this
- 10:28Speaker 1: with this player. You can kind of do it with C.D. Lamb.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Right?
- 10:35Speaker 1: He's probably your top three or four receiver in the league.
- 10:37Speaker 1: But you can kind of do it with him. I
- 10:42Speaker 1: don't think he really went clown with Dak. Or it
- 10:45Speaker 1: doesn't feel like he went clown with Dak. And the
- 10:47Speaker 1: reason is very simple. Because Dak bought that bread. Now, Ryan,
- 10:50Speaker 1: you're a Saints fan, not a Cowboys fan, right? Correct.
- 10:53Speaker 1: All right, you Louisiana boys can go in either direction.
- 10:56Speaker 2: It's right around I-10 is the cutoff point.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yep, and Dak, I-10, right? He's of your world also,
- 11:03Speaker 1: but we know Dak about getting every single one of
- 11:06Speaker 1: them down.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yeah, every single dollar.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I don't think anybody fully gets the leverage and timing.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Dak is, what if Kirk Cousins was just a little
- 11:14Speaker 1: bit better?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and also, like, You see these quarterback deals, like
- 11:19Speaker 2: you're only the highest paid quarterback for only, you know,
- 11:21Speaker 2: a month, sometimes two. Dak's been the highest paid quarterback
- 11:25Speaker 2: for a whole year.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Dak has... Dak has what Kirk Cousins had, though, the
- 11:31Speaker 1: willingness to take a short deal to get that money. Yeah. Right.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And he's done this at every time. But when it
- 11:35Speaker 1: goes long with Dak on our side, we are absolutely saying, hey, man,
- 11:39Speaker 1: you might as well just go ahead and take care
- 11:41Speaker 1: of this. But you can make an argument on Jerry's side.
- 11:44Speaker 1: But that drives a hard bargain. Right. Right. It's like, oh, OK, cool.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I can halfway get it. We don't even think that's
- 11:51Speaker 1: necessarily what's happening here in large part because Michael Parsons
- 11:54Speaker 1: is willing to hear him out.
- 11:55Speaker 2: It was apparently thought he was having conversations in March. Right.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And now we're in August.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Right. Let me tell you who would have had word
- 12:02Speaker 1: the first with Jerry in March under those same circumstances.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Dak Prescott.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Dak Prescott. Yeah. No way in the world. Hey, Dak,
- 12:09Speaker 1: can you come to the office for a second? Oh,
- 12:11Speaker 1: we can come talk at my agent's office. Yeah. What
- 12:14Speaker 1: do you think? What do you think? How'd you like
- 12:15Speaker 1: to do that? Ain't nobody talking to you. What are
- 12:17Speaker 1: you talking about? And I bet you Jerry tried it once.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and just once.
- 12:22Speaker 1: And they realize, no, no, no, no, no. This ain't
- 12:25Speaker 1: going to happen here. And so, look, everything anybody wants
- 12:27Speaker 1: to say about the Cowboys, yeah, yeah, I get you.
- 12:30Speaker 1: All of that seems fair. Look, you know why I'm here.
- 12:32Speaker 1: The Cowboys are great for business. I'm telling you, this
- 12:36Speaker 1: one may wind up being a bit of an inflection point.
- 12:38Speaker 1: We talked about it last show, but now Jerry's starting
- 12:40Speaker 1: to seem old. Now he's starting to seem ridiculous inside
- 12:48Speaker 1: his own house. That, no, no, no, baby, you can't,
- 12:55Speaker 1: you can't have that. Okay, so I have often discussed
- 13:06Speaker 1: in my own life, I've probably talked about it a
- 13:08Speaker 1: couple times here, I don't know. It is amazing that
- 13:13Speaker 1: we only care about track and field once every four
- 13:17Speaker 1: years because we all like track and field. Like, I
- 13:21Speaker 1: don't know if this is still the case. I imagine
- 13:23Speaker 1: it is. Track and field is like the sport that
- 13:26Speaker 1: has the highest participation rate in schools, for example. It
- 13:30Speaker 1: is the easiest thing for you to understand. Very often,
- 13:34Speaker 1: it doesn't require very much of you because the races
- 13:37Speaker 1: ain't necessarily that long. All of that. But we typically
- 13:42Speaker 1: only pay attention to track and field during the Olympics.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I don't know why, but I wound up watching a
- 13:49Speaker 1: track and field race yesterday. It was the 200 meters,
- 13:54Speaker 1: not even the 100 meters. And hold on, Ron. I
- 13:57Speaker 1: got to look up what race it was. Oh, it
- 14:00Speaker 1: was the US track championships. I bet my buddy Gabe
- 14:05Speaker 1: was there. He goes to all that stuff.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yeah, up in Oregon.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Yes. Yes, that is easy.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Hey, look, man.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Gabe's like, why not? Yeah, why not? It's right down
- 14:13Speaker 1: the street. Two things for Gabe. There's a why not
- 14:17Speaker 1: factor and it's outside factor. Yeah. Gabe is outdoorsy, guys.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I love that guy. Anyway, I'm sure Gabe was there.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I need to hit him up and find out what
- 14:26Speaker 1: the vibes were. But if you didn't see it, it's
- 14:28Speaker 1: this dude named Kenny Bednarik. And goodness gracious, it's B-E-D-N-A-R-E-K
- 14:36Speaker 1: and I wish it was B-E-D-N-A-R-I-K so I could come
- 14:40Speaker 1: up with somehow, some way that he was related to
- 14:42Speaker 1: Chuck Bednarik. If there was a world in which somehow
- 14:48Speaker 1: he and Chuck Bednarik were related, good gracious, I would
- 14:50Speaker 1: love to know what it was, especially if he was
- 14:52Speaker 1: just a little bit more light-skinned than wavy. You know
- 14:55Speaker 1: what I'm saying? You get it? Anyway, they were running
- 15:00Speaker 1: the 200 and From what my track friends tell me,
- 15:04Speaker 1: a couple things here. One, this Bednarik dude had won
- 15:10Speaker 1: every race this year. We'll get to two in a minute,
- 15:13Speaker 1: but he had won every 200 that he had run
- 15:16Speaker 1: this year, and he's running against Noah Lyles, and they
- 15:20Speaker 1: get off the blocks. Bednarik is up, and then Noah
- 15:24Speaker 1: Lyles walked that boy down, got to the finish line,
- 15:29Speaker 1: stared him down, then ran into his lane a bit,
- 15:34Speaker 1: and Ben Eric pushed him, and then Ben Eric came
- 15:38Speaker 1: up and tried to dap him up, at which point
- 15:41Speaker 1: Noah Lyles told him that he expected an apology. It
- 15:46Speaker 1: is at this point that everybody does what they do
- 15:51Speaker 1: with Noah Lyles, which is be mad at him. Okay?
- 15:58Speaker 1: I understand fully that why it is that you react
- 16:02Speaker 1: that way. But I got to be honest with you.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I'm starting to become a Noah Lyles fan. And the
- 16:12Speaker 1: reason I'm starting to become a Noah Lyles fan is
- 16:15Speaker 1: not because he's my kind of guy. Because hell no.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Not at all. What are you talking about? I can't
- 16:22Speaker 1: imagine hanging out with somebody like him. No chance. However,
- 16:28Speaker 1: me and my buddy Rick Got something in common. We
- 16:33Speaker 1: love nothing more than watching people be irrationally angry.
- 16:42Speaker 2: And people are irrationally angry at Noah Wiles.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Every time he does anything, he be having y'all hot.
- 16:53Speaker 2: He's just a habitual line stepper.
- 16:55Speaker 1: He's a habitual line stepper. um but he's a heel
- 17:00Speaker 1: yeah and the game needs more heels every game needs
- 17:05Speaker 1: more heels i said this about dylan brooks back in
- 17:07Speaker 1: the day i don't like dylan brooks but i'm so
- 17:09Speaker 1: glad we got him we gotta have a real live
- 17:13Speaker 1: heel like marcus smart could have been the heel but
- 17:15Speaker 1: he never played into it enough he just did shit
- 17:17Speaker 1: like dye his hair green you know what i'm saying was.
- 17:20Speaker 2: A good heel until he started you know choking everybody.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yeah and also have to admit that like How I
- 17:26Speaker 1: feel about the heel, like Duke basketball is a heel
- 17:30Speaker 1: in ways. But I don't like Duke basketball for being heel,
- 17:33Speaker 1: because I'm one of the people that's mad. You know
- 17:36Speaker 1: what I'm saying? Like I admit that my appreciation for
- 17:39Speaker 1: the heel has to do with whether or not the
- 17:40Speaker 1: heel makes me mad. Dylan Brooks didn't make me mad.
- 17:43Speaker 1: He's just not my type, right? Noah Lyles does not
- 17:47Speaker 1: make me mad. So I watch how mad everybody gets
- 17:51Speaker 1: with him. And in every case, everybody assumes that he
- 17:54Speaker 1: is in the wrong. And in this case, I disagree.
- 17:58Speaker 1: I am fully on his side with this. And that
- 18:00Speaker 1: is because of thing number two that ties to the
- 18:03Speaker 1: thing number one that I brought up before. So apparently. Right.
- 18:08Speaker 1: I don't know if you know about this, but apparently
- 18:11Speaker 1: there was some Twitter account track something and it was
- 18:15Speaker 1: dishing a bunch of gossip about different people in the
- 18:20Speaker 1: track world.
- 18:21Speaker 2: I did not see that.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And it had a lot of information about Noah Lyles
- 18:27Speaker 1: and his girlfriend stayed trashing him. And then at some point,
- 18:33Speaker 1: you know the internet, right? You know how they be getting,
- 18:36Speaker 1: how they be sleuthing, right? People figured out that the
- 18:41Speaker 1: people running that account were Ben Narek and his girlfriend.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Of course.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So let me get this straight. You find out that
- 18:56Speaker 1: this man been dogging you from a burner. Yeah. You
- 19:02Speaker 1: and your fiance from a burner. You get out there
- 19:08Speaker 1: at the championships where burner boy hasn't.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Lost all year.
- 19:13Speaker 1: He gets ahead. You walk his ass down and you
- 19:18Speaker 1: don't get to stare at him? What? You kidding me?
- 19:23Speaker 2: I thought this was America.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay. So now he stares at him and
- 19:27Speaker 1: you're like, well, he got to push him. Well, he
- 19:29Speaker 1: ran into his lane. You don't get to run into
- 19:31Speaker 1: his lane? And then on top of that, you're trying
- 19:36Speaker 1: to tell me that after this happens and after he
- 19:40Speaker 1: runs into his lane and Buddy pushes him, the dude
- 19:44Speaker 1: that created burner accounts to dog you and your queen,
- 19:49Speaker 1: among others, others then tries to walk up on you
- 19:54Speaker 1: and dap you up and then when is asked after
- 19:59Speaker 1: the race what was what was noah talking about when
- 20:01Speaker 1: he said about an apology and y'all want to answer
- 20:04Speaker 1: for it and y'all are on the side of the.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Burner boy.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Who raised y'all? What are you talking about? No, no, no, no, no.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Even if you don't like Noah Lyles, you got to
- 20:21Speaker 1: admit that was pretty gangster on his part. He went
- 20:25Speaker 1: out there and got what we call it a small
- 20:28Speaker 1: measure of justice. He did that. But baby, y'all wrong. <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
- 20:36Speaker 1: And I get it. I get it. Y'all just don't
- 20:39Speaker 1: like that boy. I understand why y'all just don't like him.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I watched that, the sprint joint, him and his mama.
- 20:47Speaker 1: A little too close. You know what I mean? But
- 20:51Speaker 1: you got to remember, he had like real bad asthma.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I mean, look, man, no allow, they put that boy
- 20:55Speaker 1: in homeschool. You know, this is all within the realm of,
- 21:04Speaker 1: you know, homeschool possibilities. right? It's right there. This is
- 21:08Speaker 1: what it could be. But no, I got to say,
- 21:11Speaker 1: the madder y'all get, the more I'm going to have
- 21:12Speaker 1: to ride with Big Dog, man, because when that dude
- 21:16Speaker 1: pushed him, pushed him because he didn't punch him. When
- 21:18Speaker 1: he pushed him, that was so funny. Also funny, the
- 21:24Speaker 1: idea of somebody of Noah Lyle's personality type staring you down.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Man, I have to.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Say, I'm going to throw this out here right fast.
- 21:34Speaker 1: In spite of how I may enjoy that Noah Lyles
- 21:36Speaker 1: be making y'all mad, he do in fact be making
- 21:38Speaker 1: y'all mad. And I am going to say to Noah Lyles, hey, hey,
- 21:42Speaker 1: little homie, one of them will punch you in the face.
- 21:45Speaker 1: In fact, one of them wakes up every day hoping
- 21:47Speaker 1: that the opportunity comes so they can just finally punch
- 21:50Speaker 1: you in the face. Just keep that in mind. And
- 21:52Speaker 1: what would be more funny than finding out that Noah
- 21:55Speaker 1: Lyles got hands? All right, Ryan. The time everybody's been
- 22:06Speaker 1: waiting on, 10 through six in our list of top
- 22:10Speaker 1: 25 athletes of the last 25 years for this year.
- 22:12Speaker 1: 2025 right so just to run it down for people
- 22:17Speaker 1: every athlete on this list is under 25 at the
- 22:22Speaker 1: january 1st year 2000 that was a qualification they are
- 22:26Speaker 1: all north americans um and i think that pretty much
- 22:30Speaker 1: covers the ones the big ones that people need.
- 22:32Speaker 2: That's basically yeah that's basically the only rules.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Okay now we will uh let you guys know who
- 22:38Speaker 1: we have already um Listed so far. We've already taken
- 22:43Speaker 1: down on the list. Actually, I don't think I have
- 22:45Speaker 1: that list in front of me.
- 22:47Speaker 2: All right. Number 25, Randy Moss. Number 24, Cam Newton.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Number 23, Albert Pujols. Number 22, Ray Lewis. Number 21,
- 22:55Speaker 2: Tim Duncan. Number 20, wild cards. You can put whoever
- 22:58Speaker 2: you want there. Number 19, Katie Ledecky. Number 18, Mike Trout.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Number 17, Lamar Jackson. Number 16, Aaron Rodgers. Number 15,
- 23:06Speaker 2: Aaron Donald. Number 14, Peyton Manning. 13, Kevin Durant. 12,
- 23:11Speaker 2: Kobe Bryant. 11, Steph Curry. And now we are to
- 23:14Speaker 2: our top 10.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Okay. Now, I am going to tell you this about
- 23:18Speaker 1: this top 10. It is at the point of this
- 23:21Speaker 1: top 10 that we can stop asking the question, are
- 23:24Speaker 1: we sure you're better than Tim Duncan? I think everybody
- 23:27Speaker 1: in the top 10 is not only better than Tim Duncan,
- 23:30Speaker 1: but everybody in the top 10 has a legitimate claim
- 23:34Speaker 1: within their sport to being the greatest player of all time.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I don't think that I could say that about anybody
- 23:44Speaker 1: that was below these guys on the list. Everybody that's
- 23:48Speaker 1: up here higher can't say not just the greatest at
- 23:50Speaker 1: their position, but can say that they are the greatest
- 23:54Speaker 1: player of all time. We will start with number 10.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes. Now, Ryan, I think the rest of the
- 24:09Speaker 1: list may get us to, are you sure he's better
- 24:11Speaker 1: than Patrick Mahomes place? But we value peak over here
- 24:16Speaker 1: more than longevity. Not that longevity doesn't matter at all,
- 24:20Speaker 1: but we value peak here more than longevity. And he's
- 24:23Speaker 1: the best quarterback that I have ever seen. At his best,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I have never seen a quarterback who was this good.
- 24:30Speaker 1: We had a similar discussion about Aaron Rodgers. No, I
- 24:32Speaker 1: take the best of Mahomes over the best of Aaron Rodgers.
- 24:35Speaker 1: The criticism of Aaron Rodgers being risk aversion. Right.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yeah. And I mean, not to go full meta here,
- 24:41Speaker 2: but with Patrick Holmes, we have a demonstrated clutch gene.
- 24:44Speaker 1: We do that.
- 24:45Speaker 2: We cannot say the same with Aaron Rodgers.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers. What's amazing about Aaron Rodgers is that he
- 24:49Speaker 1: seems primarily concerned with not making mistakes, but could still
- 24:53Speaker 1: make high end plays. But there's a long stretch of
- 24:56Speaker 1: his career where they were. He wouldn't win in no
- 24:57Speaker 1: games down by 10 points or more because of the
- 25:00Speaker 1: level of risk aversion. Right. It's an irony. Right. Because
- 25:04Speaker 1: it's a similar criticism of the guy who was taken
- 25:06Speaker 1: number one overall the same year that Aaron Rodgers went
- 25:09Speaker 1: 24 or 25, which is Alex Smith. Yeah, with tight
- 25:12Speaker 1: end Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, I'm just going to not make
- 25:14Speaker 1: a mistake. That's what I'm going to do. Mahomes, three
- 25:18Speaker 1: Super Bowls, three Super Bowl MVPs, and that is in,
- 25:25Speaker 1: as a starter, 18, 19, 20, seven years. Yep. Seven years.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And been to two more.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Never lost. Well, hold on. Has only played, what is it,
- 25:36Speaker 1: two road playoff games in this whole time? Played two.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Has only lost two playoff games prior to the Super Bowl.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Both in the AFC title game.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Both in the AFC title game. Has lost in the
- 25:52Speaker 1: Super Bowl, but I still contend. And I don't care
- 25:54Speaker 1: what anybody says. And this is not what them kids
- 25:57Speaker 1: try to call it. Glazing. That game against Tampa Bay
- 26:01Speaker 1: is the wildest. I've never. That's the first one on
- 26:04Speaker 1: 11 NFL game that I have ever seen. And it
- 26:07Speaker 1: had some of the most incredible individual plays ever, ever. Ever, ever, ever, ever, ever.
- 26:13Speaker 1: We have already seen Mahomes at that place where you
- 26:16Speaker 1: put up the giant numbers, the Dan Marino 1984 type numbers.
- 26:19Speaker 1: We also seen him be at the place where it's
- 26:21Speaker 1: just like, oh, I just got to do what it
- 26:22Speaker 1: takes to get it done. Just keep moving these chains. OK, cool.
- 26:25Speaker 1: We're going to do that. We've seen him do it.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I think we feel like we've seen him do it
- 26:29Speaker 1: with great offensive talent. We've seen him do it without
- 26:33Speaker 1: great offensive talent. We have not seen him do it with.
- 26:37Speaker 1: A team that was great on offense and great on defense.
- 26:41Speaker 1: For example, we lose sight of how good the 49ers
- 26:44Speaker 1: with Joe Montana were on defense. We have seen some
- 26:48Speaker 1: Patriots teams. The Patriots teams are kind of like that, too.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Great on offense, maybe great and great on defense. At
- 26:53Speaker 1: the same time, not quite so much. But you still
- 26:56Speaker 1: felt like you had Bill Belichick over there, right? We
- 27:02Speaker 1: don't know where this story is going to end with Mahomes,
- 27:05Speaker 1: but they just came off a really disappointing 15-win season.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Think about what I just said here. They came off
- 27:14Speaker 1: a really disappointing 15-win season, and they got better in
- 27:19Speaker 1: the offseason. Now, I'm sure there's going to be a
- 27:21Speaker 1: point at which Rasheed Rice has got to sit for
- 27:23Speaker 1: a stretch or whatever, but... The idea that Mahomes catches
- 27:28Speaker 1: Tom Brady and Super Bowl wins is not off the table.
- 27:32Speaker 1: It is also fair to say it's a somewhat crazy thought.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Like the thing to remember by and large, with Tom
- 27:39Speaker 1: Brady maybe being the exception, very rarely has anybody won
- 27:43Speaker 1: their last Super Bowl, their last NBA championship, their last major,
- 27:48Speaker 1: and people assume that that was the last one. That's
- 27:51Speaker 1: not really how it works, right? One day you just
- 27:53Speaker 1: look back and you're like, damn, that was the last one.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Because why would you think it? They just won it now.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Why couldn't they win it again or whatever? Seven would
- 27:59Speaker 1: be a lot for him to get to. But we
- 28:03Speaker 1: don't have the why not answer. Yeah, he's there now.
- 28:08Speaker 1: It just it becomes a matter of how well the
- 28:11Speaker 1: Chiefs can keep this up and whether they're going to
- 28:14Speaker 1: make the decision to operate on the premise of we
- 28:17Speaker 1: got Patrick Mahomes, let's fortify the defense and let's just
- 28:19Speaker 1: ask him to get the rest done. I think maybe
- 28:23Speaker 1: the most underrated part of this is he is doing
- 28:27Speaker 1: this in a golden age of young quarterbacking. Okay? They're
- 28:35Speaker 1: all in his conference and they're all basically the same age.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Not exactly the same age, but his first year as
- 28:42Speaker 1: a starter is the same as Josh Allen. It's the
- 28:46Speaker 1: same as Lamar Jackson. If you want to extend it
- 28:50Speaker 1: just a little bit farther, it's the same year as
- 28:53Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield. He was in the same draft with, I mean,
- 28:57Speaker 1: he's not good anymore, but Deshaun Watson, he'll nasty ass
- 29:01Speaker 1: is pretty good there for a little stretch. Like this
- 29:04Speaker 1: isn't a downtime. Joe Burrow comes in as a starter
- 29:07Speaker 1: two years after he did. This isn't, these aren't slow times, right?
- 29:12Speaker 1: He's not the one guy while this is going down. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 29:18Speaker 1: He's that dude. And I've seen someone make a point.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I can't remember who it was. It was on Twitter,
- 29:23Speaker 1: but it was very interesting. But if you look back
- 29:25Speaker 1: at the 1980s and the late 70s, the AFC had
- 29:29Speaker 1: the quarterbacks. But then the 80s, you saw the NFC
- 29:31Speaker 1: became dominant because the way they got things done was
- 29:34Speaker 1: running the ball and with defense that was how it
- 29:36Speaker 1: went um you see something very similar now happening with
- 29:39Speaker 1: the nfc also um you think about uh the eagles
- 29:43Speaker 1: um my detroit lions america's team for example they running
- 29:47Speaker 1: the ball like that's how they're getting it done while
- 29:49Speaker 1: the other conference has those quarterbacks quarterbacks cost a little
- 29:52Speaker 1: bit more money you can fortify more on the other
- 29:53Speaker 1: side of the ball and then you see who wins
- 29:55Speaker 1: in a super bowl when it comes down to it
- 29:57Speaker 1: But Mahomes is dictating a world in which in the AFC,
- 30:01Speaker 1: you got to have a quarterback. You don't feel like
- 30:05Speaker 1: you can consider going up there and dealing with those
- 30:08Speaker 1: guys if you don't have the quarterback. That's right. And
- 30:12Speaker 1: nobody wants to feel that way. He is like I'm
- 30:16Speaker 1: trying to think of who the analog. It's a I
- 30:18Speaker 1: have been comparing him to Michael Jordan for a very
- 30:20Speaker 1: long time. Right. But he's a Jordan analog in the
- 30:23Speaker 1: sense that you could feel like you got everything going
- 30:25Speaker 1: for you. You got to go over there and you
- 30:26Speaker 1: see him. Right? And the teams that have beaten the
- 30:30Speaker 1: Chiefs in the Super Bowl with Mahomes as their quarterback were, again,
- 30:34Speaker 1: that Tampa team where I... I'll say it again. They
- 30:40Speaker 1: put that... What do they call it? A slate. They
- 30:44Speaker 1: put that slate up on the TV and it had
- 30:47Speaker 1: Mike Remmers at left tackle and I was like, ooh,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I have judged incorrectly on who's going to win this game.
- 30:54Speaker 1: And then the Eagles who just... We're so much better
- 30:58Speaker 1: at every position, right? So it's not a situation where
- 31:03Speaker 1: we got Mahomes, nothing else matters. But picking against him
- 31:09Speaker 1: still does not at all. No, I picked against Tom
- 31:12Speaker 1: Brady many times. I ain't never felt like I thought
- 31:16Speaker 1: that picking against this guy was going to be a
- 31:18Speaker 1: good idea. Now, part of that is because I watch
- 31:20Speaker 1: a lot of football with Nick and I don't necessarily
- 31:22Speaker 1: want to go home after I've already, you know, walked
- 31:24Speaker 1: 20 blocks to get there. You know what I'm saying?
- 31:28Speaker 1: But he's that guy. He's that one. And we saw
- 31:33Speaker 1: it very, very, very early. He is the rare example
- 31:38Speaker 1: of these quarterbacks. where you see it early, and there
- 31:40Speaker 1: really hasn't been the drop-off. There kind of has, right?
- 31:43Speaker 1: Like the last couple of years, he's not putting up
- 31:46Speaker 1: the video game numbers in the ways that his peers have, right?
- 31:50Speaker 1: And quarterback play kind of goes up and down like that,
- 31:52Speaker 1: where you can be better even though your statistics aren't
- 31:54Speaker 1: as good. Josh Allen, I believe it was 2020 or 2021,
- 31:59Speaker 1: one of those years where he had the super lights
- 32:01Speaker 1: out stats. It's never going to be like that again.
- 32:03Speaker 1: He is clearly much better. than he was at that point.
- 32:06Speaker 1: That's why using stats for your quarterback comparisons get tricky
- 32:10Speaker 1: and why you have to actually watch. It's because of
- 32:12Speaker 1: all those things. But this guy has walked in and
- 32:16Speaker 1: basically been the king since the second he showed up.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And even when people pass him his stats, even when
- 32:23Speaker 1: he loses a Super Bowl, he is still the king
- 32:27Speaker 1: and it's still the beginning. All right, number nine. Michael Phelps. Now,
- 32:40Speaker 1: I'm going to be honest with you guys. I watch
- 32:44Speaker 1: swimming at the Olympics for the same reason you guys
- 32:47Speaker 1: watch swimming at the Olympics. Because it's on. And it's
- 32:53Speaker 1: on because Americans are good at it. We have the
- 32:59Speaker 1: kind of country where people can afford to just swim
- 33:02Speaker 1: all day. Right? This is our bag. This is what
- 33:06Speaker 1: we do. And I admit... That it has taken time
- 33:10Speaker 1: for me at various points to really get on board
- 33:14Speaker 1: with the greatness of Michael Phelps. And it is because
- 33:20Speaker 1: on one hand, I do believe we overstate the metal
- 33:26Speaker 1: count itself. Oh man, he won eight gold medals, right? Okay.
- 33:32Speaker 1: It's the only sport where it's possible. ironically, because it's
- 33:37Speaker 1: in the water, right? I don't know if that's ironic,
- 33:40Speaker 1: but anyway, it's because it's in the water, your body
- 33:42Speaker 1: can get back right, you know, those sorts of things.
- 33:44Speaker 1: There's no way you can have a world where you
- 33:47Speaker 1: can win eight gold medals in track and field. It's
- 33:50Speaker 1: just not going to be it, right? At the same time,
- 33:55Speaker 1: you do at some point have to get up and
- 33:56Speaker 1: recognize that ain't nobody else doing that. Um, I know
- 34:02Speaker 1: I used to kind of be patronized and be like, well,
- 34:04Speaker 1: if you had run forward and run backwards and run sideways,
- 34:06Speaker 1: then maybe you could get these, you know, in track. Okay,
- 34:09Speaker 1: that's fine. Um, but swimming forward and swimming backwards and
- 34:15Speaker 1: doing it like that and doing it like this are
- 34:19Speaker 1: distinctly different things. And he does them better than anybody
- 34:24Speaker 1: else and then kept doing it like that for a very, very,
- 34:28Speaker 1: very long time.
- 34:29Speaker 2: I think the craziest Michael Phelps stat, I mean, obviously
- 34:31Speaker 2: he threw out the eight gold medals in 2008, but
- 34:33Speaker 2: he won six gold medals in 2004 and won five
- 34:37Speaker 2: in 2016.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I don't think I realized the 2004. Yeah.
- 34:42Speaker 2: So the 2004, he comes into Athens. He's a teenager.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:46Speaker 2: And six gold medals. A lot of those are individual.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And then you obviously have the great 2008. His disappointing 2012,
- 34:55Speaker 2: I think he only won four or five. That is
- 34:57Speaker 2: the kind of sustained success he had. And also, we
- 35:03Speaker 2: talk about, remember, we had that conversation with Spencer Hall
- 35:05Speaker 2: about athletes that felt like the future. you know, Michael
- 35:09Speaker 2: Phelps was built to be a dominant swimmer. Literally.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yes. It's interesting. It's like big feet, short legs. Like,
- 35:15Speaker 1: you know, like there, there is a body type that is,
- 35:18Speaker 1: that is necessary in order to do this. And I
- 35:21Speaker 1: think like in talking about the magnitude and the greatness,
- 35:25Speaker 1: I think it's also tricky because this is a sport
- 35:28Speaker 1: that when you look, all the people are basically from
- 35:31Speaker 1: like three, four places. And I know I'm going to
- 35:34Speaker 1: use places very broadly, but it's like the United States.
- 35:39Speaker 2: France, Australia.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Yeah. China, Japan.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Like stretches of Europe. Right. For whatever reason.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Places that can afford indoor and outdoor pools.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Or, you know, a legacy of communism. You know what
- 35:53Speaker 1: I'm saying? Like the commies was all about. Because think
- 35:56Speaker 1: about it, man. Once you put the water in the pool, baby,
- 35:59Speaker 1: it's paid for. You know what I'm saying? Oh, man,
- 36:02Speaker 1: I bet that water in Russia, they used to swim
- 36:04Speaker 1: in with coal. Woo-wee. At best. Yeah, you could cut
- 36:10Speaker 1: glass with them things when they was in there doing
- 36:13Speaker 1: that swimming. But like it doesn't feel it doesn't feel
- 36:16Speaker 1: like a world event to me. That's that I think
- 36:19Speaker 1: is probably where the hold up came for me about swimming.
- 36:22Speaker 1: But you put the whole goddamn world out there. He
- 36:24Speaker 1: still was going to be out there dusting them. Still.
- 36:29Speaker 1: He is that guy, was that guy. And 2008 was
- 36:34Speaker 1: almost 20 years ago. We ain't heard about nobody coming
- 36:37Speaker 1: up and doing this again. There were 36 years between
- 36:41Speaker 1: he and Mark Spitz or him and Mark Spitz, right?
- 36:45Speaker 1: Maybe it'll come up again 36 years later. I have
- 36:48Speaker 1: no idea. Maybe that'll happen. But for now, you have
- 36:51Speaker 1: to give credit to what he has done. And yeah, man,
- 36:54Speaker 1: he has a strong argument for being the greatest Olympian
- 36:58Speaker 1: of all time and the greatest of all time at
- 37:00Speaker 1: his sport. And that'll get you to number nine. Now,
- 37:06Speaker 1: number eight. Shohei Ohtani. I actually, this tells you how
- 37:22Speaker 1: much slipping in my pimpin' is when it comes to
- 37:24Speaker 1: baseball these days. I was doing a crossword puzzle the
- 37:27Speaker 1: other day, and I needed that crossword puzzle to remind
- 37:31Speaker 1: me that Shohei Ohtani had gone 50-50.
- 37:37Speaker 2: I forgot about that. Yeah, that's outrageous. Not in his
- 37:42Speaker 2: top three baseball accomplishments.
- 37:44Speaker 1: No, I had completely forgotten. So first of all, I
- 37:47Speaker 1: understand that the steroid era kind of skewed the way
- 37:53Speaker 1: we looked at 50 home runs, right? When I was
- 37:58Speaker 1: a kid, Cecil Fielder hit 51 home runs in 1991.
- 38:02Speaker 1: That was the first time in 14 years that that
- 38:08Speaker 1: anyone had hit 50 home runs the first time. That
- 38:12Speaker 1: was an incredibly scarce sort of number for somebody to
- 38:18Speaker 1: get to. Now people do it a little bit more, obviously.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I'm looking now and I would say totals that I
- 38:27Speaker 1: would deem post-steroid, and it's a little tricky because Prince
- 38:31Speaker 1: Fielder hit 50 home runs the same year as Alice
- 38:33Speaker 1: Rodriguez and none of us believe that Alice Rodriguez Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 2: None of us believe Alex Rodriguez.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Right. Let's posterior. Yeah, you can stop right there. You're correct. Like,
- 38:43Speaker 1: I mean, we'll see. I guess he got the money
- 38:45Speaker 1: to buy that team. You know what I'm saying? But
- 38:47Speaker 1: you want me to believe Alex Rodriguez? But it's like
- 38:50Speaker 1: Jose Bautista, Chris Davis, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge has done
- 38:53Speaker 1: it twice, Pete Alonso, Matt Olsen, like– It happens. I
- 39:00Speaker 1: don't want to pretend like it doesn't happen that guys
- 39:03Speaker 1: hit 50 home runs.
- 39:04Speaker 2: I mean, people are trying to hit more home runs.
- 39:05Speaker 2: It's like the whole launch angle. It's like the whole
- 39:07Speaker 2: change of baseball.
- 39:08Speaker 1: It's completely different. The idea that Otani is hitting 50
- 39:13Speaker 1: home runs and can steal 50 bases and can pitch...
- 39:20Speaker 1: can pitch. Howard Bryant came on and said he talked
- 39:23Speaker 1: to CeCe Sabathia, and Sabathia's thing was, oh yeah, this
- 39:27Speaker 1: guy is the best baseball player of all time. time,
- 39:30Speaker 1: and the argument was he's treating this like high school. Yeah,
- 39:37Speaker 1: I'm just the best player at everything. Dude, did you
- 39:40Speaker 1: realize this? That he has led the league in on-base
- 39:44Speaker 1: percentage and slugging twice? and back-to-back years, right? We're talking
- 39:53Speaker 1: Ted Williams type of stuff with hitting. Now, of course,
- 39:57Speaker 1: Ted Williams, if Ted Williams struck out 162 times, right?
- 40:01Speaker 1: You know, again, it is a different game, but to
- 40:03Speaker 1: hit 300 and lead the league in all base percentage
- 40:06Speaker 1: and strike out 162 times is crazy. And so in
- 40:13Speaker 1: looking at it, Is he a better baseball player than
- 40:16Speaker 1: Barry Bonds? Maybe, but I just can't say that right now.
- 40:19Speaker 1: You just ask. That requires me to divorce myself from
- 40:21Speaker 1: a whole lot of things that I think about the world, right?
- 40:23Speaker 1: I'm not so sure of that. I will just point out,
- 40:27Speaker 1: and I don't know if you knew this, Ryan, because
- 40:30Speaker 1: apparently they don't hit them like they used to, but
- 40:33Speaker 1: Shohei Ohtani once led the league in triples.
- 40:38Speaker 2: It's outrageous.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Yes. Now, granted, it was only eight because apparently guys
- 40:42Speaker 1: don't hit triples.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Yeah, because people are swinging for the fences.
- 40:45Speaker 1: That's really disappointing, by the way. Triples are so much fun.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Triples are fun. Triples are awesome.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Triples are the most fun thing.
- 40:51Speaker 2: You get the arm wave. You get the whole thing.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah. That's right. Triples are great. But he's got to
- 40:58Speaker 1: be here. He does have a plausible argument at this
- 41:02Speaker 1: point for being the best baseball player that any of
- 41:05Speaker 1: us have ever seen. In a world where I saw
- 41:08Speaker 1: Barry Bonds. That's a lot, guys. Like, that's a lot.
- 41:13Speaker 1: He's that dude. He has earned his place on our list.
- 41:16Speaker 2: And he also, you know, he's barely 31. He could
- 41:19Speaker 2: keep hitting another. It's not outrageous for him to hit
- 41:22Speaker 2: another 350 home runs. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:25Speaker 1: At some point, this pitching thing is going to stop.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Like, he's already done the Tommy John, you know, like.
- 41:31Speaker 1: At some point, the pitching is going to stop. But
- 41:33Speaker 1: for all we know, man, he's going to be able
- 41:35Speaker 1: to hit forever and ever and ever. By the way,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and I don't pay this close attention to this, but Ryan,
- 41:46Speaker 1: his war last year was his batting war was nine points. 9.2.
- 41:55Speaker 1: When I do the Immaculate Grid and they want to
- 41:58Speaker 1: use a number to point out a great season, it's
- 42:05Speaker 1: a plus six war season. 9.2. All right, guys. Number seven.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Floyd Mayweather. I mean, look, man, ain't nobody beat him.
- 42:29Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you. Uh, right. I don't think
- 42:31Speaker 1: there's anything else to say. I'll find ways to stress
- 42:34Speaker 1: this out, but ain't nobody beat him.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Nobody beat him. Um, he was the probably want
- 42:39Speaker 2: to talk about, go back to our heel conversation. One
- 42:42Speaker 2: of the all time sports heels, um, And still is
- 42:50Speaker 2: the standard for boxing.
- 42:52Speaker 1: The argument against him is obviously very selective in taking
- 42:57Speaker 1: his fights and not really taking fights that put him
- 43:00Speaker 1: in a great deal of danger. That is fair. However,
- 43:06Speaker 1: just about every single boxer I can think of that
- 43:10Speaker 1: reached the levels of greatness that he did get to,
- 43:13Speaker 1: somebody snuck him. Right. Right. Nobody snuck him.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a one-point punch sport.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and I don't recall there even being a, I
- 43:23Speaker 1: don't know, man, I think he lost that one. Right? Like,
- 43:28Speaker 1: I don't recall anything as such being the case with him.
- 43:32Speaker 1: He's the greatest defensive fighter probably that anybody has ever seen. Yeah,
- 43:36Speaker 1: maybe he fought Canelo early. Maybe he fought Pacquiao late.
- 43:41Speaker 1: All of those things are fair criticisms to make, right? However,
- 43:47Speaker 1: nobody got him and he did the thing that no
- 43:51Speaker 1: boxer does. He walked away on his own terms and
- 43:57Speaker 1: hasn't come back. Not in a way that actually counts
- 44:01Speaker 1: or actually matters. That's what he's done. That by itself
- 44:07Speaker 1: gets you a pretty high listing here. right? He definitely
- 44:12Speaker 1: started in a weight class lower than the one that
- 44:14Speaker 1: he ended up in, right? So he did the things.
- 44:18Speaker 1: And he's just, of course, very difficult to like for
- 44:28Speaker 1: significant reasons, not just superficial ones. Yes, yes, yes. That
- 44:33Speaker 1: is the best way to put this, serious and unserious.
- 44:36Speaker 1: But yeah, there's some serious reasons to dislike him. There
- 44:39Speaker 1: are unserious reasons also to dislike him but i will
- 44:45Speaker 1: say when you talk about all-time great troll um pablo
- 44:50Speaker 1: made this point i don't remember if he wrote something
- 44:52Speaker 1: on mayweather but he always made this point he started
- 44:56Speaker 1: calling himself money mayweather in 2008 In 2008, he started.
- 45:06Speaker 1: That's when he went from being Pretty Boy Floyd to
- 45:08Speaker 1: Money Mayweather. He was basically Ted DiBiase for wrestling. He
- 45:14Speaker 1: basically made that call to be Ted DiBiase for wrestling.
- 45:17Speaker 1: There is also when he fought Oscar De La Hoya.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I'm a little late. When he fought Oscar De La
- 45:23Speaker 1: Hoya and he shows up wearing a sombrero and a shirt.
- 45:28Speaker 1: that says on the front, Mexico loves Mayweather, and says
- 45:32Speaker 1: on the back, Mayweather loves Mexico. While he is being
- 45:36Speaker 1: flanked by his uncle, Roger Mayweather, who referred to himself
- 45:40Speaker 1: in his boxing days as the Mexican assassin, because he
- 45:44Speaker 1: would just be out there killing those Mexicans. Hey, man. I...
- 45:53Speaker 1: You know, because boxing is the place where we allow this, right?
- 45:56Speaker 1: And boxing is the only place where we allow the
- 45:58Speaker 1: outright race baiting for one very simple reason. They're going
- 46:02Speaker 1: to go scrap it out.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Yeah, if you have a problem, they'll solve it very quickly.
- 46:06Speaker 1: That's exactly it, right? The proper response to this sort
- 46:09Speaker 1: of behavior is a fight, which there will be. You
- 46:13Speaker 1: will have your opportunity to air your grievances wordlessly very soon.
- 46:19Speaker 1: You go out there and you get to do it, right?
- 46:22Speaker 1: That is why we halfway tolerate this situation. But no,
- 46:26Speaker 1: he is all-time, all-time, all-time troll and all-time great boxer,
- 46:33Speaker 1: even if he is all-time jerk.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Okay.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Two more for today. Excuse me, one more for today.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Number six. Serena Williams. Sorry about that. Ryan had to
- 46:57Speaker 1: duck in case any of my sisters tried to throw
- 46:59Speaker 1: something at me. To this one. As we have said,
- 47:06Speaker 1: Serena Williams has an argument. like everybody else on this list,
- 47:10Speaker 1: for being the greatest tennis player of all time. I
- 47:14Speaker 1: think that we all allowed Nike and recency bias to
- 47:17Speaker 1: get us a little caught up in this idea of
- 47:19Speaker 1: greatest female athlete of all time or even greatest athlete
- 47:24Speaker 1: of all time that they went with. And my point
- 47:27Speaker 1: on that simply is, what's the argument against Steffi Graf here?
- 47:33Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like even if you can
- 47:35Speaker 1: take Serena, I'm not saying you can't, but this idea
- 47:38Speaker 1: that it is like completely over the top, there's nothing
- 47:41Speaker 1: to talk about here.
- 47:42Speaker 2: You don't think there's some similarities in Groff Williams as
- 47:45Speaker 2: there is to like Nicholas Tiger?
- 47:49Speaker 1: So the demerit against Groff is kind of unfair. Which
- 47:55Speaker 1: is the whole, what if Monica Seles didn't get stabbed? Yeah.
- 47:58Speaker 1: But we can't assume that Seles, it was going to
- 48:01Speaker 1: stay like it was.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Right. Forever.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Right. But I mean, Steffi Graf won the Grand Slam
- 48:06Speaker 1: in 1988 with the gold medal. Like we saw her.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I think that Steffi Graf demonstrated tiger-like qualities in her prime.
- 48:16Speaker 2: That Nicholas never did.
- 48:17Speaker 1: In a way that Nicholas did not. I think that's
- 48:19Speaker 1: maybe the way that I would put it. I think
- 48:21Speaker 1: there's arguments to go either way, but I say all
- 48:24Speaker 1: that to say six is really high on this list.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Yes. If we're only saying five people in the last
- 48:31Speaker 2: 25 years, uh years were better than you were not hating.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah and when we get to the five
- 48:36Speaker 1: you'll be like oh okay i kind of see what
- 48:37Speaker 1: you're saying but let me tell you this let's get
- 48:40Speaker 1: this straight right now see ryan you were a a
- 48:43Speaker 1: little bit young for when this happened and b just
- 48:46Speaker 1: throwing it out here probably not around as many black
- 48:49Speaker 1: people as i was in 1997. it's certainly yes certainly
- 48:52Speaker 1: that age okay just throwing it out there so 1997
- 48:55Speaker 1: is not to talk about serena it is to talk
- 48:57Speaker 1: about venus And one of the indelible memories in my
- 49:02Speaker 1: mind is the 1997 U.S. Open final with Venus Williams
- 49:07Speaker 1: is there. I honestly do not remember who she played
- 49:10Speaker 1: against off the top of my head with the beads
- 49:12Speaker 1: and everything else. And I realized what a big deal
- 49:16Speaker 1: it was because it was my freshman year of college.
- 49:20Speaker 1: and we had just got there. And you know, when
- 49:23Speaker 1: you just get, just get there, man, we are here
- 49:26Speaker 1: on the yard. We out here in the streets. We
- 49:28Speaker 1: ain't really trying to be inside. And in my all
- 49:32Speaker 1: boys dorm, it was Venus about to come on. And
- 49:36Speaker 1: we were all there in that lounge, right? Maybe one
- 49:41Speaker 1: of the only times that it wasn't showing Rap City
- 49:43Speaker 1: a video sold and we was locked in. Like that
- 49:48Speaker 1: mattered so much what it was that we were watching.
- 49:53Speaker 1: And so as we're watching it, and I believe she
- 49:57Speaker 1: lost that one, but I will never forget that Richard
- 50:00Speaker 1: Williams told us, Serena's gonna be better And that seemed insane.
- 50:10Speaker 1: But she was. She was. She was better and in
- 50:17Speaker 1: line with Ryan's Tiger Woods comparison at points appeared to
- 50:21Speaker 1: be better than anybody that we had ever seen. There
- 50:24Speaker 1: was a level of athleticism that we saw from her
- 50:27Speaker 1: playing tennis that we just had not seen with all
- 50:31Speaker 1: the other stuff. Right? Like there wasn't As far as
- 50:35Speaker 1: I can tell, I'm not the greatest tennis expert, but
- 50:37Speaker 1: Pete Serena, where was the flaw? Where was the flaw?
- 50:42Speaker 1: I did not see it. And she had a career
- 50:46Speaker 1: that had ups and downs in a way where, you know,
- 50:50Speaker 1: a lot of injuries type stuff, health type stuff. You
- 50:53Speaker 1: don't automatically see people go back on the up, right?
- 50:59Speaker 1: But an incredibly long career in a sport that does
- 51:03Speaker 1: not necessarily guarantee you that while being one of the
- 51:05Speaker 1: people who started off in this game when people really
- 51:07Speaker 1: started off very, very young. Now, of course, one of
- 51:11Speaker 1: the Richard Williams things that's important is not burning those
- 51:13Speaker 1: kids out when they were super young and why they
- 51:16Speaker 1: could continue to do it because they were managed well.
- 51:20Speaker 2: She won the French in 1999 in Wimbledon in 2016.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Yes.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Yes.
- 51:27Speaker 1: Two completely different tournaments, by the way. To be as
- 51:30Speaker 1: good on grass and on clay as she was capable
- 51:34Speaker 1: of being is nuts, right? It's interesting how it could
- 51:39Speaker 1: have been difficult for me to fully grasp the magnitude
- 51:42Speaker 1: of Michael Phelps winning at different strokes, but it wasn't
- 51:44Speaker 1: hard at all to tell the difference between who was
- 51:47Speaker 1: winning in between playing on clay versus playing on grass
- 51:49Speaker 1: and then playing on hard court. All of that. She...
- 51:53Speaker 1: did that while also being a revolutionary figure in a
- 52:00Speaker 1: lot of ways, right? Hardly anyone has ever been better
- 52:05Speaker 1: at understanding everybody's looking at me and half of these
- 52:11Speaker 1: people are looking at me because they can't stand me,
- 52:15Speaker 1: but I got some form since they're going to be
- 52:18Speaker 1: looking at me. And yes, That is exactly what I'm
- 52:24Speaker 1: talking about, fellas. Exactly what I'm talking about. I don't
- 52:29Speaker 1: know if Ryan knows what it is that I'm talking
- 52:31Speaker 1: about again, because this is an age gap situation. But
- 52:35Speaker 1: for those of us who were there, if you know,
- 52:37Speaker 1: you know, you know what I'm talking about. That's right.
- 52:42Speaker 1: I'm talking about that catsuit. And I ain't got no
- 52:46Speaker 1: problem talking about this catsuit in front of y'all. You
- 52:50Speaker 1: know why I ain't got no problem talking about this catsuit?
- 52:53Speaker 1: Because she didn't wear it for us not to talk
- 52:57Speaker 1: about it. She didn't wear it for us not to
- 53:01Speaker 1: look at it. She knew exactly what time it was
- 53:06Speaker 1: because we can all tell time. OK. If the little
- 53:13Speaker 1: hand go up and the bottom hand go straight down,
- 53:16Speaker 1: you know what it is? It's 1230. There's no room
- 53:19Speaker 1: for interpretation about that. That's just what it is. That
- 53:23Speaker 1: can't suit. You can tell time. You know exactly what
- 53:28Speaker 1: the time was. There has never, ever been a point
- 53:31Speaker 1: that I could think of in my life, in this
- 53:34Speaker 1: era that we stand in, that not only was everybody
- 53:39Speaker 1: allowed to sit there with their jaws dropped on the ground,
- 53:44Speaker 1: It was the expectation that would be the case. In fact,
- 53:49Speaker 1: if you didn't do that, you were the one who
- 53:52Speaker 1: was being disrespectful. I'm not lying. I'm not lying. Brian,
- 53:58Speaker 1: if you've never seen the catsuit, go ahead and look
- 54:00Speaker 1: it up.
- 54:01Speaker 2: Oh, I've seen the catsuit, but this is a.
- 54:05Speaker 1: No, no, no, baby. Everybody's allowed here, dog. Everybody's allowed here.
- 54:08Speaker 1: I'm just saying, she didn't do it for us not
- 54:11Speaker 1: to do this. Correct. That's, that's, that's, you're not, you're not, see,
- 54:15Speaker 1: what you're not going to do is do that and
- 54:17Speaker 1: then tell me I got to act like you dress
- 54:19Speaker 1: for church. You're not going to do that. It's not fair.
- 54:23Speaker 1: That's not it. But it was a thing, right? Like,
- 54:26Speaker 1: it was the ultimate, you, you are, I see you
- 54:30Speaker 1: looking with your looking ass. But in every way, in
- 54:35Speaker 1: every single way. Like, Ryan, when you would watch SportsCenter
- 54:37Speaker 1: and everything around that happening, nobody was saying the words,
- 54:41Speaker 1: but it was just.
- 54:43Speaker 2: We all knew.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I sent it. It was a photo moment. I sent
- 54:47Speaker 1: it to my dad, and his response was, I can
- 54:49Speaker 1: dig it. Signed, Pops. I'm sorry. That and dominating Maria
- 54:57Speaker 1: Sharapova at Wimbledon and then Cripwalking. Those are the top
- 55:00Speaker 1: two surrealist moments of all time. Yo, I still wish
- 55:06Speaker 1: that she would have owned the Cripwalk rather than try to,
- 55:08Speaker 1: I don't want to talk about what it is. Come
- 55:10Speaker 1: on now, you went out here and you decided to
- 55:11Speaker 1: do it. But we'll talk about, you know, well, okay.
- 55:15Speaker 1: I mean, you knew Tiger Woods was coming later. We'll
- 55:17Speaker 1: talk about him later. But they tried a thing where
- 55:19Speaker 1: they tried to invent rivals for Tiger Woods. They kept
- 55:22Speaker 1: trying to come up with them, right? And he just
- 55:23Speaker 1: slew them all. Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. We're going
- 55:28Speaker 1: to look this up to make sure I get the
- 55:29Speaker 1: numbers right, okay? They played against each other. And by
- 55:35Speaker 1: the way, there is a wiki page called Sharapova-S. Williams rivalry, okay?
- 55:43Speaker 1: In their rivalry, Maria Sharapova won the first two times
- 55:51Speaker 1: That they played. No, got that wrong. Serena won the
- 55:54Speaker 1: first two times they played. Maria Sharapova won the next two.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Won in the Wimbledon final, won in the finals at
- 56:03Speaker 1: the WTA championships. And to be fair, Ryan, that sounds
- 56:07Speaker 1: like the start of a rivalry. Right. Serena beat her
- 56:12Speaker 1: the next 19 times they played.
- 56:15Speaker 2: Clearly had and clearly enjoyed every victory.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Every single time. 19 times in a row. The last
- 56:24Speaker 1: one was 6-1, 6-1. The one before that, 6-4, 6-1.
- 56:29Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, in their last eight matches,
- 56:34Speaker 1: Sharapova didn't win a set. She did win a set
- 56:38Speaker 1: at the 2013 Miami Masters. In the first set, it
- 56:42Speaker 1: then lost 6-3, 6-love for the next two. Before that, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.
- 56:47Speaker 1: At the Olympics, it was 6-love, 6-1, which is like
- 56:51Speaker 1: the Tiger Woods 9-8 over that dude at the match play. Yeah.
- 56:55Speaker 1: That one time. 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.
- 56:57Speaker 2: There's very few sports where you can beat someone 19
- 57:00Speaker 2: times in a row.
- 57:01Speaker 1: 19. And again... Oh, there's 6162 in the 07 Aussie final. Oh,
- 57:08Speaker 1: there's 6161 at the Miami Masters. Yeah, yeah, they did
- 57:16Speaker 1: a little too much. And then did Marisha Epubicola a
- 57:18Speaker 1: home record at one time?
- 57:22Speaker 2: I don't have a memory of that one, but I
- 57:24Speaker 2: knew that rivalry was not just about the tennis court. Yeah,
- 57:28Speaker 2: to put it simply.
- 57:29Speaker 1: It was a lot going on. The only thing that

- 57:41Speaker 1: was not happening. Good gracious. We got her. She is
- 57:44Speaker 1: number six. We have five left. We will rattle off
- 57:48Speaker 1: the top five on our list next week. We'll give
- 57:52Speaker 1: you some context on this in our next episode. But
