- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another tiny German lesson? Luna: Absolutely. I've been practicing my body parts from last time. Der Bauch, der Rücken... Lucas: Perfect. Today we're staying in the body theme, but moving to the arms and hands. Luna: Oh good, because I need to know how to say 'elbow' after I bumped it yesterday. Lucas: Oof. Well then you're in luck. Let's start with the basics: der Arm. Luna: Der Arm. Lucas: Yes. The arm. Now, the elbow is der Ellbogen. Luna: Der Ellbogen. That's a mouthful but I like it. Lucas: It is. Now the hand: die Hand. Luna: Die Hand. Lucas: And fingers are die Finger. Plural. One finger is der Finger. Luna: Der Finger, die Finger. Okay. Lucas: Finally, the thumb: der Daumen. Luna: Der Daumen. Like 'dumb' but not dumb at all. Lucas: Exactly. Let's say them all together slowly. Listen and repeat: der Arm, der Ellbogen, die Hand, der Finger, der Daumen. Luna: Der Arm, der Ellbogen, die Hand, der Finger, der Daumen. Lucas: Great. Now let's use them in sentences. If you hurt your arm, you say: 'Mein Arm tut weh.' Luna: Mein Arm tut weh. My arm hurts. Lucas: Right. And if it's your elbow: 'Mein Ellbogen tut weh.' Luna: Mein Ellbogen tut weh. That's what I need. Lucas: Now I have a question for you. How many fingers do you have? Luna: Uh... zehn Finger? Ten fingers? Lucas: Exactly. Zehn Finger. And two thumbs: zwei Daumen. Luna: Zwei Daumen. I have two thumbs up for this lesson. Lucas: Nice. Now let's do a tiny scene. Imagine you're at the doctor and you point to your hand. Luna: Die Hand tut weh? Lucas: Perfect. And the doctor might ask: 'Welcher Finger?' Which finger? Luna: Der Daumen. My thumb. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's do one more round of repetition. I say it, you repeat: der Arm. Luna: Der Arm. Lucas: Der Ellbogen. Luna: Der Ellbogen. Lucas: Die Hand. Luna: Die Hand. Lucas: Der Finger. Luna: Der Finger. Lucas: Der Daumen. Luna: Der Daumen. Lucas: You've got them. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Guten Tag. Was fehlt Ihnen? Luna: Mein Arm tut weh. Und mein Ellbogen. Lucas: Zeigen Sie mir bitte. Tut die Hand auch weh? Luna: Nein, nur der Arm und der Ellbogen. Lucas: Gut. Und die Finger? Alles okay? Luna: Ja, die Finger sind okay. Aber der Daumen ist ein bisschen steif. Lucas: Hmm. Gut, dass Sie Deutsch lernen. So können Sie alles erklären. Luna: Yeah, and now I can point to exactly what hurts. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick review of all five words one more time. Listen and repeat: der Arm. Luna: Der Arm. Lucas: der Ellbogen. Luna: Der Ellbogen. Lucas: die Hand. Luna: Die Hand. Lucas: der Finger. Luna: Der Finger. Lucas: der Daumen. Luna: Der Daumen. Lucas: Perfect. Now you can talk about arms and hands at the doctor's office. Great job today, Luna. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. That was fun. I'm going to practice pointing at my arm and saying 'der Arm' all day. Lucas: Do it. And until next time, keep practicing. Tschüss! Luna: Tschüss!
