- 0:17Speaker 1: Hello. Welcome to Pastor's Perspective. I'm your host, Brian Perez,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and we're here until 4 o'clock. Call in and ask
- 0:26Speaker 1: your questions about the Bible, the Christian faith, just about
- 0:29Speaker 1: anything that's on your mind. If you've got questions about
- 0:32Speaker 1: any of those books on Phil Metzger's shelf, I'm sure
- 0:35Speaker 1: you can zoom in and see which ones they are.
- 0:37Speaker 1: You can call in to 888-564-6173. If you're watching on Facebook,
- 0:42Speaker 1: YouTube or Instagram, you guys can call in too. The
- 0:45Speaker 1: number's right there on the bottom of your
- 0:46Speaker 1: Screen, same one I just gave a moment ago. And
- 0:50Speaker 1: you can also scan that QR code and that'll take
- 0:52Speaker 1: you to the pastor's perspective page at Kwave.com, where you
- 0:55Speaker 1: can submit your question online. You can also do that
- 0:58Speaker 1: on the Pastor's perspective Instagram using DM.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Or, yeah, DMing us on the pastor's perspective Instagram or
- 1:05Speaker 1: by using Messenger on the Pastor's Perspective Facebook page. But yes,
- 1:09Speaker 1: Phil Metzger from Calvary San Diego is here joining us
- 1:12Speaker 1: on the show, as well as Brian Broderson. How are
- 1:15Speaker 1: you guys doing?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Well,
- 1:18Speaker 1: I, I want to speak for Phil. Phil is doing
- 1:21Speaker 1: extremely well. He is, he just looks so pastoral today.
- 1:26Speaker 1: He's just, you know, bright faced and he's nicely shaved
- 1:30Speaker 1: and his hair looks good and he's got a collared
- 1:32Speaker 1: shirt on, which I am so impressed by all these things.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And as you can probably tell, I have not followed
- 1:40Speaker 1: Phil's example today. Um.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm still wearing my pajamas actually. Well, not this is
- 1:50Speaker 1: what a Sunday pastor looks like and Brian's what a
- 1:52Speaker 1: Monday pastor looks like. Brian is what a, uh, packing boxes, uh,
- 2:00Speaker 1: remodeling your house, uh, looks like, yeah, so.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Well, I'm glad you took time away from that to
- 2:08Speaker 1: come in here to the studio today. We so appreciate it. Yeah, I,
- 2:11Speaker 1: but I was wondering about that book on Phil's shelf, um,
- 2:14Speaker 1: when I met the Nephilim, I wondered, uh, is that
- 2:18Speaker 1: he wrote that. That's what I thought. That's my new
- 2:21Speaker 1: book that's coming out in, uh, yeah, it's coming out soon. I,
- 2:25Speaker 1: I was hoping to get a foreword by you, but
- 2:27Speaker 1: I guess, you know, I don't know.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Well, I know a few people that could give you
- 2:32Speaker 1: one actually. I know some that would want to give
- 2:35Speaker 1: you one.
- 2:38Speaker 1: All right, Phone lines are open at 888-564-6173 if you
- 2:42Speaker 1: want to talk about the Nephilim or anything else, uh,
- 2:45Speaker 1: preferably not the Nephilim, but, uh, I think we've exhausted
- 2:48Speaker 1: that topic. I don't know if there's, if there's anything
- 2:51Speaker 1: new we could say about it, but you could call in.
- 2:53Speaker 1: The Nephilim are making a comeback. I mean, it's, are they, yeah, they're,
- 2:56Speaker 1: they're big, big news these days. A lot of people
- 2:59Speaker 1: talking about the Nephilim, uh, yeah, of course, online, where
- 3:03Speaker 1: all the wacky stuff gets posted, right.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Where the Nephilim hang out. Yes, yes.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Let's go to the phones right away and uh maybe
- 3:13Speaker 1: we'll read some of these questions later that were submitted online.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Phone number again, 888-564-6173. And here's Mary in Chino Hills,
- 3:22Speaker 1: who's listening on the KWave app. Thank you, Mary, for
- 3:25Speaker 1: downloading the app and thanks for calling in today.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Good afternoon. I would like to have, I'm working on
- 3:33Speaker 1: my Women's weekly Bible study, and I'm going over 2
- 3:37Speaker 1: Corinthians 11:23-27 where it goes into detail of the persecution, um,
- 3:46Speaker 1: that Paul went through. And I was just wanting to
- 3:49Speaker 1: get some commentary of the, uh, 40 lashes minus 1.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a reference to the times that he was
- 4:01Speaker 1: um beaten.
- 4:04Speaker 1: And it was beaten at the um.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The command of of some magistrate. So, um, the 40
- 4:15Speaker 1: lashes minus 1 was, that was the number of lashes,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and they, they were 40, but then they would stop
- 4:23Speaker 1: at 39 as sort of a show of, of mercy. Uh,
- 4:27Speaker 1: so he's just commenting on the fact that he had, um,
- 4:31Speaker 1: what does he say, 5 times that he received 40 stripes,
- 4:34Speaker 1: or is it, yeah, I think it's, yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's what that's what he's referring to there.
- 4:42Speaker 1: OK, I was just wondering if there was a significance
- 4:45Speaker 1: for the actual phrase of 40 minus 1 opposed to
- 4:52Speaker 1: just saying 39 lashes. I was just curious if that
- 4:56Speaker 1: had any significance. Yeah, I think if you read the
- 5:01Speaker 1: new translation, it would probably say 39. It does.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's just a, I look at every, I'm sorry,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I look everything up in the New King James Version,
- 5:10Speaker 1: but that gives me a good reference to look at
- 5:13Speaker 1: a different, yeah, yeah, and the, and the, um.
- 5:17Speaker 1: The new, the New Living Translation is a good, it's
- 5:21Speaker 1: good to read alongside of the New King James, uh,
- 5:24Speaker 1: because it will, it'll just kind of update some of
- 5:26Speaker 1: those types of things.
- 5:29Speaker 1: OK, great. Thank you very much. You're welcome.
- 5:33Speaker 1: God bless you. Bye bye. You too. Thanks, Mary. Thanks
- 5:36Speaker 1: for calling in today. So yeah, instead of 40 lashes,
- 5:40Speaker 1: we stopped at 39. How nice. I mean, right, that's mercy. Yeah, yeah, and,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and I think the indicator too is that um those
- 5:47Speaker 1: were administered by the Jewish authorities because it was only
- 5:50Speaker 1: the Jewish authorities that had the, you know, the display,
- 5:55Speaker 1: the great display of mercy to give you one less
- 5:58Speaker 1: than 40.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Fill in a commentary on that from you. Well, does
- 6:03Speaker 1: it wait, um, I'm looking because in the new Living
- 6:06Speaker 1: it actually says the Jewish leaders. Oh, does it really? Yeah.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And so now I'm flipping over to my new king Jimmy,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and yeah, from the Jews, 500 from the Jews, OK, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:18Speaker 1: So good, good catch on that. That's important, yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Thank you Mary for your phone call at 888-564-6173. Now
- 6:25Speaker 1: let's read at least one question that was submitted online.
- 6:28Speaker 1: This one is from Sarah, who, uh, reached out to
- 6:31Speaker 1: us on Instagram. She DM'ed us and wrote, I'm grateful
- 6:35Speaker 1: for the biblical insights and perspectives of the pastors and
- 6:39Speaker 1: for Brian's eloquent, warm, and gracious hosting. I think she's
- 6:43Speaker 1: talking about you. Remember, remember the other day when you
- 6:45Speaker 1: were hosting for 90 seconds, 30 seconds? Oh, of course
- 6:47Speaker 1: it was me, to be, I mean.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It's obvious. It's obvious in the countless hours and hours
- 6:54Speaker 1: of Brian Perez's hosting, she was certainly referencing that she
- 6:59Speaker 1: was deeply moved by, yes, I was too, so yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm with her. I got it because you were very eloquent, warm,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and gracious. Oh, I must remember that very much so, yes. OK,
- 7:10Speaker 1: so Sarah says, my question is, um, my understanding is
- 7:13Speaker 1: that God.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Father and God the Son are distinct persons, yet both
- 7:18Speaker 1: are fully God. Before Jesus was born as a human
- 7:21Speaker 1: being on earth, did he already exist eternally as God
- 7:24Speaker 1: the Son? If so, how should we understand his relationship
- 7:28Speaker 1: with God the Father before the incarnation? Were they always
- 7:32Speaker 1: distinct persons, and how can we understand this while still
- 7:35Speaker 1: believing there is only one God? Phil Metzger, what do
- 7:38Speaker 1: you say to Sarah?
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Sarah, you know, you're, you're, you're.
- 7:43Speaker 1: This is a topic that obviously has been
- 7:46Speaker 1: You know, it's one that, I mean, we're, we've been
- 7:48Speaker 1: discussing for thousands of years is that trying to understand
- 7:50Speaker 1: like how do you, how do you express and, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: we've got analogies of the Trinity and like, and things
- 7:56Speaker 1: like that and really what it comes down to is we,
- 7:58Speaker 1: we take the scriptures for, I mean, the, the Bible
- 8:01Speaker 1: gives us this, this clarity of Trinity, but in terms
- 8:04Speaker 1: of like how can you perfectly understand it, that'll be
- 8:08Speaker 1: for you and me in heaven one day. But yes,
- 8:12Speaker 1: Three persons, one God, unique, but also one God. And
- 8:16Speaker 1: so we see from the very beginning in Genesis, we
- 8:19Speaker 1: see God, and even just the very term that is
- 8:23Speaker 1: used for God is God's Elohim, but it is one God.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Let us make man in our image, so God speaking
- 8:33Speaker 1: to Himself, the three persons speaking to each other throughout, um,
- 8:37Speaker 1: you know, I think it's in John 17 that it
- 8:40Speaker 1: says that there was
- 8:41Speaker 1: Uh, Jesus said of the Father, you loved me before
- 8:44Speaker 1: the foundation of the world. In other words, there's been
- 8:46Speaker 1: unity and harmony and love among the, the triune God
- 8:51Speaker 1: since before Jesus was incarnated as, as a person.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So, God the Son and God the Father and God
- 8:59Speaker 1: the Spirit in eternal love, relationship, one God, three persons,
- 9:05Speaker 1: is it confusing? Absolutely. From the, from our kind of
- 9:08Speaker 1: like temporal perspective, it's like, how, how can that be? What, how,
- 9:12Speaker 1: how is that possible? But of course we're talking about
- 9:15Speaker 1: God and so, uh, what becomes possible is possible because
- 9:18Speaker 1: he made it possible and so we accept it by faith.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And we accept the word of God by faith, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: we accept the, because the Bible tells us of the
- 9:27Speaker 1: triune God, we accept that by faith.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Pastor Bryant. Mhm.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Um,
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I don't, I don't know that there's
- 9:37Speaker 1: really anything that I would add. I mean there, there
- 9:40Speaker 1: has been a historic debate regarding the eternal sonship, uh,
- 9:46Speaker 1: so not, not regarding the eternal nature of Jesus because
- 9:49Speaker 1: of course we of course know that he, uh, you know,
- 9:54Speaker 1: has been God always from eternity. But the the question
- 9:57Speaker 1: has been, would the sun apply to him before the incarnation?
- 10:03Speaker 1: And, um, or in in some cases before the resurrection
- 10:08Speaker 1: because uh when Peter is referencing um.
- 10:15Speaker 1: The the passage that says, uh, you are my son today.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I have begotten you, he, he puts it in the
- 10:23Speaker 1: context of the resurrection. And so again, there, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 1: there has been some historic debate about not whether Christ
- 10:31Speaker 1: is eternal and distinct from the Father, but whether we
- 10:35Speaker 1: should see him as eternally the Son. And um, so,
- 10:40Speaker 1: you know, some people have landed on one side of
- 10:42Speaker 1: that and others have landed.
- 10:44Speaker 1: On a different side of that, and um I think
- 10:47Speaker 1: that the
- 10:48Speaker 1: The
- 10:51Speaker 1: And, and I, I've, I've thought about it, and I,
- 10:53Speaker 1: I do think that the uh
- 10:56Speaker 1: To refer to the eternal sun, I think is, I
- 11:01Speaker 1: think it is actually the the proper way to understand.
- 11:05Speaker 1: That Jesus has been the son in in the sense of,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you know, you know, this, this idea of begotten to
- 11:12Speaker 1: the Father again, these are, these are complicated things in
- 11:15Speaker 1: the sense that, um, you know, to be begotten means
- 11:19Speaker 1: to proceed from, you know, to be born from and so, um,
- 11:26Speaker 1: you know, we know that, you know, Jesus.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Is the brightness of God's glory and the express image
- 11:32Speaker 1: of His person or the exact representation of His person.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So I, I think it's
- 11:39Speaker 1: I think it's proper to refer to the eternal Son
- 11:44Speaker 1: of God.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Hope that helps you, Sarah. Thank you so much for
- 11:47Speaker 1: DMing us on the Pastor's Perspective Instagram. 888-564-6173 is the
- 11:53Speaker 1: number to call us today with your questions. Phil, do
- 11:55Speaker 1: you ever feel like, um,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Gosh, I need to do like a whole deep dive
- 12:00Speaker 1: into the Trinity again, you know, people, people ask you
- 12:03Speaker 1: questions about it and you're like, you know, I haven't
- 12:06Speaker 1: really thought about that topic specifically, and you know, you
- 12:12Speaker 1: get a little bit rusty in the sense of like
- 12:15Speaker 1: all of the, the technicalities and the different perspectives and
- 12:19Speaker 1: arguments and things. So, um, I came across a book
- 12:21Speaker 1: in my library the other day just because I've been
- 12:23Speaker 1: cleaning it out.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And it was a, a study I had on the
- 12:26Speaker 1: Trinity that I, I forgot that I even had that
- 12:28Speaker 1: particular book and I thought, I should probably read this, just,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you know, just to brush up my
- 12:35Speaker 1: To stay sharp on the, on the topic. I feel
- 12:38Speaker 1: like I can answer a question on the Nephilim easier
- 12:41Speaker 1: than the Trinity. And I mean, you know, we get
- 12:45Speaker 1: used to hearing certain questions, right? And then when somebody says, hey,
- 12:48Speaker 1: can you explain, you know, I remember just like to
- 12:51Speaker 1: the point that you're making there, Brian, when I first
- 12:53Speaker 1: moved to Russia back in 1992.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And I remember like thinking I got to be prepared,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you know, I got to be ready to share my
- 12:59Speaker 1: faith and all that. And then people are like, who
- 13:01Speaker 1: is God? It's like, what do you mean? Who is God?
- 13:05Speaker 1: Like I wasn't thinking that, that, you know, like, it's
- 13:09Speaker 1: like you go back to like such a, a basic,
- 13:12Speaker 1: but yet like, oh my gosh, that's really hard to explain.
- 13:17Speaker 1: That's great. All right, here's Gary in Moreno Valley who
- 13:21Speaker 1: listens to us on K-wave. Thank you, Gary, for calling 888-564-6173.
- 13:26Speaker 1: What's your question for Brian and Phil?
- 13:30Speaker 2: Oh yeah, hey, Miranda Phil. My question is, uh, when
- 13:33Speaker 2: Jesus healed people,
- 13:35Speaker 1: he would tell them not to tell anybody about it.
- 13:38Speaker 1: What's the reason behind that?
- 13:41Speaker 1: What do you think, Brian?
- 13:43Speaker 1: Well, I think we're told in the scriptures themselves that
- 13:47Speaker 1: um Jesus was wanting to prevent um
- 13:54Speaker 1: An effort on the part of the people to take
- 13:57Speaker 1: him and to make him a king by force. John's
- 13:59Speaker 1: Gospel actually tells us that when it, uh, I think
- 14:02Speaker 1: it's in the 6th chapter where it's dealing with Jesus,
- 14:04Speaker 1: you know, having multiplied, uh, the, the loaves and the
- 14:08Speaker 1: fishes and um.
- 14:11Speaker 1: So the people, you know, seeing those miracles, they, they
- 14:15Speaker 1: were inclined to take him and, you know, to kind
- 14:18Speaker 1: of force him to um
- 14:22Speaker 1: Publicly
- 14:24Speaker 1: Take his position as king. And so I think that
- 14:28Speaker 1: all of the different times, which are just a 22
- 14:30Speaker 1: or 3, where he tells people not to, not to
- 14:35Speaker 1: spread it, um, I think that's the purpose.
- 14:39Speaker 1: For preventing a premature, um, you know, there, there's God
- 14:43Speaker 1: has an appointed time where Jesus is going to be
- 14:45Speaker 1: announced to the nation as the Messiah. And so this
- 14:48Speaker 1: is like.
- 14:50Speaker 1: To prevent that from happening prematurely, so, yeah, that's, that,
- 14:54Speaker 1: that is it, and that, and that has like, I
- 14:56Speaker 1: mean that is the core of it. On top of that,
- 14:59Speaker 1: we could say like there's all these like little side
- 15:01Speaker 1: branches that come out from that, the idea that Jesus
- 15:03Speaker 1: wanted people to understand way more than just miracles, right?
- 15:07Speaker 1: So miracles weren't gonna be the, the epitome or the
- 15:11Speaker 1: like the foundation of his ministry wasn't a miracle, and
- 15:14Speaker 1: people like, like Brian said though, the very core of
- 15:16Speaker 1: that is, is at that level. The other thing I
- 15:18Speaker 1: was thinking about too is like.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Um, he didn't want people to misunderstand his mission. His
- 15:23Speaker 1: mission wasn't just to do miracles, and that's the John
- 15:26Speaker 1: 6 passage you were talking about, um, but that he
- 15:28Speaker 1: came to die and that he came to pay for
- 15:31Speaker 1: the sins of the world. So, he definitely, he didn't
- 15:34Speaker 1: want to have any mission confusion there. He wanted it
- 15:37Speaker 1: to be really clear, so nobody was gonna mess with
- 15:39Speaker 1: the timing that the father had established. It's great. Does
- 15:43Speaker 1: this help you, Gary?
- 15:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I appreciate it. Thank you very much. All right,
- 15:48Speaker 1: thanks for calling 888-564. What was that?
- 15:53Speaker 1: Have a good day. Oh yes, thank you. You too.
- 15:56Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 is the number to call us today here on
- 16:00Speaker 1: Pastor's Perspective. Gonna be here till 4 o'clock, so call
- 16:03Speaker 1: in if you've got a question about the Bible, the
- 16:06Speaker 1: Christian faith, just about anything that's on your mind. You know, I, I,
- 16:09Speaker 1: I do wanna say something. Um, I can't remember exactly
- 16:13Speaker 1: who it was, um, but somebody was telling me the
- 16:18Speaker 1: other day just how much.
- 16:22Speaker 1: They appreciate Brian Perez hosting this program.
- 16:26Speaker 1: It was my mom. What a great job. It was
- 16:28Speaker 1: your mom. You know what? That's, I forgot I ran
- 16:30Speaker 1: into her at, uh, Target.
- 16:35Speaker 1: She was buying you, she's buying you a, a new suit. Yes, yes,
- 16:39Speaker 1: probably a razor not wearing, by the way, he's not
- 16:41Speaker 1: wearing today, so not at all, uh, it wasn't your mom,
- 16:46Speaker 1: I can assure you of that. But it was, it
- 16:48Speaker 1: was a person who, I mean, I thought they were
- 16:50Speaker 1: talking about me at first because they were just going
- 16:52Speaker 1: on about Brian just gushing like how amazing he is,
- 16:55Speaker 1: and I was like, of course. And then Brian's used
- 16:58Speaker 1: to people talking to him, yeah, of course. And then
- 17:00Speaker 1: they dropped the Brian Perez thing, and I was like, Oh,
- 17:03Speaker 1: are you talking about him.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I am joking about everything except somebody's really complimenting you and, uh,
- 17:11Speaker 1: I had to agree. I said, Brian is a phenomenal
- 17:15Speaker 1: host and you know, you weren't always the host of
- 17:18Speaker 1: this program. That you're gonna say you weren't always phenomenal,
- 17:20Speaker 1: which I wasn't. No, but you weren't always the host.
- 17:22Speaker 1: And I think the program went up to another level
- 17:26Speaker 1: when you stepped into
- 17:29Speaker 1: When you sat in that seat is what the way
- 17:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna phrase it. Thank you. It's been nine years now.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Can you believe that? Are you kidding me? 2017. That
- 17:38Speaker 1: is August 2017. I still remember that. I would, I,
- 17:42Speaker 1: I would not have guessed that. I mean that, that
- 17:44Speaker 1: is crazy, you know, I saw a picture the other
- 17:46Speaker 1: day actually. I was gonna post it. Um, it was
- 17:49Speaker 1: Chuck and I sitting in the
- 17:54Speaker 1: Where were we? We were somewhere in this building.
- 17:58Speaker 1: And
- 17:59Speaker 1: But it was, it was before, I think it was
- 18:01Speaker 1: before the studio was here, I think we were, uh,
- 18:04Speaker 1: we just had a little makeshift, um, pastor's perspective thing
- 18:08Speaker 1: set up in, in one of the rooms, you know,
- 18:10Speaker 1: where we had mics and stuff, but was it, was it,
- 18:13Speaker 1: had the studio moved here yet? I can't remember. No,
- 18:15Speaker 1: we definitely were not in the studio. We were in
- 18:17Speaker 1: just a, a room. Well, remember this studio used to
- 18:20Speaker 1: be half the size that it was, so from there
- 18:23Speaker 1: to there.
- 18:24Speaker 1: There was a wall. There was a studio here. That
- 18:26Speaker 1: studio was my office, and it was also where I
- 18:28Speaker 1: did the news in the morning. And then on the
- 18:31Speaker 1: other side of that was the studio where it was
- 18:34Speaker 1: a long table with 4 seats, and we didn't have
- 18:38Speaker 1: all this room. I us. This was probably 2001 or 2002. OK,
- 18:43Speaker 1: so that was before I got here. Were we here then?
- 18:46Speaker 1: That was around the time we got here, OK, yeah,
- 18:48Speaker 1: but anyway, I, I saw this picture, you know, we're
- 18:50Speaker 1: both wearing Hawaiian shirts and we both are looking really,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you know, like we just stepped off the Newport Beach.
- 18:57Speaker 1: I was gonna say off a surfboard, yeah, yeah, but
- 19:00Speaker 1: it was, it was cool. Just like, oh wow, yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I for I forgot about, you know, those moments. My,
- 19:05Speaker 1: my son called me today, uh, Char, and it was
- 19:08Speaker 1: just so.
- 19:09Speaker 1: He did an interview today. There's a guy that's writing
- 19:12Speaker 1: a book on, um, the history of Calvary and so forth, and, and, uh,
- 19:16Speaker 1: he was telling me, he said, you know, Dad, it
- 19:18Speaker 1: was just so great to talk to this guy about
- 19:23Speaker 1: my grandpa.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And not talk to him about Pastor Chuck or the
- 19:28Speaker 1: movement or any of that stuff, but just to be
- 19:31Speaker 1: able to tell him this is who he was to me,
- 19:34Speaker 1: you know, as my grandpa and I, he, he was, yeah,
- 19:37Speaker 1: he was, he was really, he said it was really, uh,
- 19:39Speaker 1: a joyful experience to just reminisce over, you know, just
- 19:45Speaker 1: the relationship that he had with his grandpa.
- 19:49Speaker 1: How neat. 888-564-6173. Uh, here's another question that was submitted online.
- 19:55Speaker 1: This one is from Carol, somewhat of a follow-up question, uh,
- 19:59Speaker 1: regarding Tuesday's show, uh, this past Tuesday, the 27th of October,
- 20:05Speaker 1: Pastor Phil said context is king, or maybe he said
- 20:08Speaker 1: context is key, one of those. But either way, he
- 20:11Speaker 1: is very right. A church that I went to put
- 20:14Speaker 1: Luke 6:38.
- 20:16Speaker 1: On their tithe and offering envelopes, and it made me
- 20:19Speaker 1: want to get up and shout, this verse has nothing
- 20:21Speaker 1: to do with money.
- 20:22Speaker 1: But I was afraid of being escorted off the premises.
- 20:25Speaker 1: If leaders would read Luke 6:27-42, they would have to
- 20:29Speaker 1: stop manipulating and getting people's hopes up. Jesus is not
- 20:33Speaker 1: talking about giving money in that verse. Other places, yes,
- 20:37Speaker 1: but not Luke 6:38. The context is about giving forgiveness
- 20:41Speaker 1: and mercy and judging rightly. Would you pastors agree with
- 20:45Speaker 1: this or not? Luke 6:38.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Well, Luke 6:38, of course, I mean, that's just, you know,
- 20:52Speaker 1: I
- 20:54Speaker 1: Wake up in the morning quoting Luke 16 rolls off
- 20:56Speaker 1: the tongue, doesn't it? It just rolls right off there. Is,
- 20:59Speaker 1: is this the, um, it will be given to you
- 21:02Speaker 1: good measure pressed down running over, OK, uh.
- 21:08Speaker 1: You know, so I, I mean, you know, it's, of course,
- 21:12Speaker 1: people think these guys are answering the Bible question. So they,
- 21:15Speaker 1: but the fact that you just did that right now,
- 21:17Speaker 1: it did just kind of roll off your tongue. He
- 21:19Speaker 1: did just do that. Yes, yes. Well, you know, I
- 21:22Speaker 1: had to think like, OK, what, what passages are they
- 21:25Speaker 1: talking about? But anyway, uh, yes, I think to limit that,
- 21:29Speaker 1: you know, to, to limit that to just giving financially
- 21:33Speaker 1: would be a mistake. I think the context makes it much,
- 21:36Speaker 1: much broader than that.
- 21:38Speaker 1: So, and Phil's right, context is king or key or
- 21:42Speaker 1: either one.
- 21:44Speaker 1: It's both, it's both. Yeah, that context definitely, I mean
- 21:49Speaker 1: that you have to really twist that passage and you know,
- 21:53Speaker 1: completely orphan it from the rest of the chapter to
- 21:55Speaker 1: be able to make that message tithing and you'll receive
- 22:00Speaker 1: it right back, and uh yeah, that's the, that's where
- 22:03Speaker 1: context is king and it, it's definitely, contextually, it has
- 22:07Speaker 1: nothing to do with tithing in that way.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Is it wrong to use that entire thing? I don't
- 22:12Speaker 1: think it's wrong, but to make the takeaway, you're gonna
- 22:16Speaker 1: get back financially what you gave financially. That's a massive,
- 22:21Speaker 1: massive breach of, of the context.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Carol, thanks so much for sending in your question through
- 22:27Speaker 1: the pastor's perspective page at kwave.com. But I must say,
- 22:30Speaker 1: Pastor Brian, even though you were joking about, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I don't wake up every morning, the fact that you were, OK,
- 22:36Speaker 1: Book of Luke chapter 6, verse 30, like in your
- 22:39Speaker 1: mind you could kind of pinpoint, oh yes, it's the
- 22:43Speaker 1: verse about this, right? How does, how do you do that?
- 22:46Speaker 1: How does that happen? Just years of reading. I mean, it's,
- 22:49Speaker 1: you know, 50 years of reading my Bible. That's what
- 22:52Speaker 1: it is. And, and of course, you know.
- 22:55Speaker 1: The older you get, as you guys will figure out
- 22:58Speaker 1: as you go, uh, the memory isn't as sharp as
- 23:02Speaker 1: it once was, so you're like, oh wait, where, um,
- 23:07Speaker 1: but yeah, thankfully, you know, I, I can still have
- 23:10Speaker 1: pretty good recall. No, I thought that was amazing. I
- 23:12Speaker 1: wasn't trying to say.
- 23:15Speaker 1: You couldn't quote the verse. I mean, I was saying you,
- 23:18Speaker 1: you did quote it. You, you knew exactly what it
- 23:19Speaker 1: was impressive. You're correct. I, I was impressive, especially when
- 23:22Speaker 1: he went on, Oh, I don't wake up and remember
- 23:24Speaker 1: the verse, but you're talking about the one that says,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and then he quoted it. That was, uh, that was
- 23:29Speaker 1: a Chuckism right there. Chuck would go up to our
- 23:31Speaker 1: youth camps, you know, when I was a kid and like.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I remember one dude getting so mad because Chuck Smith
- 23:37Speaker 1: went up there and didn't have a Bible, but he
- 23:39Speaker 1: literally verbatim quoted like the entire story of Daniel. Like,
- 23:43Speaker 1: we walked through, it felt like 3 chapters of Daniel
- 23:47Speaker 1: and somebody was like, he didn't have a Bible. It's like, bro.
- 23:50Speaker 1: He is the Bible. He just quoted. He's he's a
- 23:53Speaker 1: walking Bible, you know, that where I remember that. I
- 23:56Speaker 1: mean that happened lots of times like, like you're saying, Phil,
- 23:59Speaker 1: but I remember so vividly being, being in Israel and
- 24:04Speaker 1: being at the Sea of Galilee and just, you know, on,
- 24:07Speaker 1: on one of the hillsides, you know, with a group
- 24:09Speaker 1: of people.
- 24:10Speaker 1: And he basically just stood up and he taught the
- 24:14Speaker 1: whole Sermon on the Mount without ever opening the Bible.
- 24:18Speaker 1: And it was one of the best, um, expositions of
- 24:22Speaker 1: the Sermon on the Mount. I remember sitting there just
- 24:24Speaker 1: thinking this is absolutely phenomenal. He just goes right through
- 24:28Speaker 1: each of the beatitudes and then from there he just
- 24:30Speaker 1: keeps going and.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It's like, wow, amazing. So, but he didn't have his Bible. Well,
- 24:36Speaker 1: he did have his Bible. He just never opened it. Yeah,
- 24:38Speaker 1: it was, he put it in his heart, but I'll,
- 24:41Speaker 1: I'll tell you a funny Israel story with Chuck was, um,
- 24:43Speaker 1: like I think it was the last trip that I
- 24:45Speaker 1: went with him and I was leading worship. He had
- 24:46Speaker 1: me there to lead worship with him, so I'm, you know,
- 24:49Speaker 1: around him a lot, and I'd literally pull out my
- 24:51Speaker 1: guitar and get ready with songs to do, and then
- 24:53Speaker 1: he would lean over and say,
- 24:55Speaker 1: And this was, you know, later on, he's like, hey,
- 24:57Speaker 1: can you play this song? And he would pick some
- 24:58Speaker 1: like random hymn that we didn't even sing it. I mean,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I've never heard, and then, and he would do like
- 25:06Speaker 1: 3 or 4 different times, he would like, hey, can
- 25:08Speaker 1: you play this I'm like, no, I don't know that song.
- 25:11Speaker 1: He was so mad, he wasn't really mad, but he
- 25:13Speaker 1: was so perturbed at how limited my worship skills were
- 25:17Speaker 1: to not knowing how to play, you know, anything other
- 25:21Speaker 1: than kumbaya.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Yeah, 4 square songs that they used to sing in
- 25:24Speaker 1: the 1950s.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Right, exactly. He had a memory, that's for sure. But then,
- 25:32Speaker 1: so the point that we were making, Brian Broderson, is
- 25:34Speaker 1: that you're there. You have arrived, you did it. You
- 25:37Speaker 1: just did that right in front of us. It was
- 25:39Speaker 1: pretty impressive.
- 25:41Speaker 1: OK, thank you guys. Now we want you to quote
- 25:44Speaker 1: the Sermon on the Mount. OK, here we go. We'll
- 25:46Speaker 1: follow along as you.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Jesse in Santa Ana listening on K-wave. Thank you for
- 25:51Speaker 1: calling 888-564-6173. What did you want to know?
- 25:56Speaker 2: Um, I have a question. It's, it's kind of, uh,
- 25:59Speaker 2: I was reading the book of Job and I've read
- 26:01Speaker 2: it many times, but this time I really, really trying
- 26:04Speaker 2: to do a study on it. And I noticed, uh,
- 26:07Speaker 2: his friends or so-called friends, his three buddies come in
- 26:10Speaker 2: and they have their little talks and going back and forth,
- 26:13Speaker 2: back and forth. And then Job has the final word
- 26:16Speaker 2: of what he's gonna say and he said, I'm done speaking.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Right after that, then this other young kid, I think
- 26:21Speaker 2: his name was Elihu.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Comes in and says, well, I'm younger than you. I
- 26:25Speaker 2: may not have as much knowledge as you, but let
- 26:28Speaker 2: me say my piece. He said all his words, and
- 26:30Speaker 2: then God intervened and said, Job, where were you when
- 26:34Speaker 2: I created the play, you know, all the different things.
- 26:37Speaker 2: And then at the end, he said, Job, I want
- 26:39Speaker 2: you to pray for your 3 friends.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Um, and which he did, but he never mentions Elihu,
- 26:44Speaker 2: and Ellie who kind of appeared out of nowhere, and
- 26:47Speaker 2: I don't remember God asking him to pray for him,
- 26:49Speaker 2: and that was just my question, like, you guys have many, many,
- 26:52Speaker 2: any more insight on that?
- 26:56Speaker 1: He wasn't his friend.
- 26:59Speaker 1: You could tell by the things he said to him. Yeah, well,
- 27:03Speaker 1: he comes into the picture and you know, he's arrogant
- 27:06Speaker 1: and he's kind of like a young know it all,
- 27:09Speaker 1: you know, he says, I don't know as much as
- 27:10Speaker 1: you guys, but then he basically goes on to say,
- 27:13Speaker 1: you guys are stupid. I know everything and you should
- 27:15Speaker 1: listen to me.
- 27:16Speaker 1: And then when God appears to Job, he says, Who's
- 27:18Speaker 1: this that darkens counsel with words without knowledge? I think
- 27:21Speaker 1: he's referring to Elihu. Oh, not all, not all four
- 27:25Speaker 1: of them. Yeah, not all four of them. Yeah. So he,
- 27:27Speaker 1: so he kind of just dismisses him. And of course
- 27:29Speaker 1: the three friends are the ones that are with Job
- 27:31Speaker 1: throughout the duration. And so I think that's the reason why, um,
- 27:36Speaker 1: it's the 3 that are to be prayed for. Phil, yeah,
- 27:39Speaker 1: I agree. I think it, uh, I hadn't thought of
- 27:41Speaker 1: that first part. I love that. I think deadly accurate.
- 27:44Speaker 1: But I think that the, you know, again, if you
- 27:46Speaker 1: read the book of Job, the focus is on the
- 27:48Speaker 1: three friends. They're the ones that are just always there.
- 27:51Speaker 1: And so for God to then say, hey, let me
- 27:54Speaker 1: talk about your three friends, that doesn't have to mean
- 27:57Speaker 1: that nobody else is included, it's just they were the focus.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Hm,
- 28:00Speaker 1: what do you think, Jesse?
- 28:01Speaker 2: I think it's great. Yeah, I just, I never thought
- 28:03Speaker 2: about it. He was specifically speaking to him alone cause
- 28:06Speaker 2: I was just kind of curious cause, you know, always
- 28:09Speaker 2: pray for everybody. Jesus says always, so I kinda like,
- 28:12Speaker 2: why didn't he pray for him? That kind of just
- 28:14Speaker 2: threw me off a
- 28:14Speaker 2: little bit.
- 28:15Speaker 1: All right, great. Thanks for calling. Um, so Cheryl, Cheryl's
- 28:20Speaker 1: actually been reading Job the past.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Week or whatever and so we've been having little uh
- 28:27Speaker 1: fun Job conversations, but she, she, you know, sometimes my wife,
- 28:30Speaker 1: she just gets the most amazing insights. I'm like how
- 28:34Speaker 1: did you, um, you know, how did you get that? But,
- 28:37Speaker 1: but she was saying about the friends of Job and
- 28:39Speaker 1: I thought, you know, it was a good perspective. She said,
- 28:41Speaker 1: you know, they, they weren't bad guys, they really were
- 28:43Speaker 1: trying to help Job. They just didn't know what they
- 28:45Speaker 1: were talking about and they couldn't imagine, they just couldn't
- 28:49Speaker 1: imagine that you.
- 28:52Speaker 1: You know, that your life being in such a mess
- 28:58Speaker 1: couldn't be connected to somehow you, you must have sinned. Job,
- 29:01Speaker 1: you just have to think harder about it. You have
- 29:04Speaker 1: to go deeper, you have to be more honest.
- 29:06Speaker 1: So you know she saw them as, you know, they were,
- 29:09Speaker 1: they were sincere but they were just completely wrong and
- 29:13Speaker 1: so I like that. Yeah, I, I, I actually really
- 29:15Speaker 1: like that. I thought that was good too and then
- 29:17Speaker 1: she had another cool insight that I'll tell you about
- 29:19Speaker 1: when we come back. Oh, a cliffhanger, a cliffhanger. We
- 29:22Speaker 1: love those.
- 29:23Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 is our number. Jesse, thank you for your phone call,
- 29:28Speaker 1: and we are gonna take a quick break and then
- 29:30Speaker 1: we'll be back with more of your questions. What do
- 29:32Speaker 1: you want to ask Pastors Brian Broderson and Phil Metzger?
- 29:36Speaker 1: Now's your chance. You've got like 30 minutes left. 888-564-6173. 888-564-6173.
- 30:19Speaker 1: We are back on Pastor's Perspective. 888-564-6173 is the number
- 30:25Speaker 1: to call. Pastors Brian Broderson and Phil Metzger here answering
- 30:29Speaker 1: your questions. Again, the number 888-564-6173. And this from our
- 30:34Speaker 1: unofficial historian Deloit. K Wave moved here into this building
- 30:38Speaker 1: in March of 2002.
- 30:41Speaker 1: 2002, 2002, which means next year will be the 25
- 30:44Speaker 1: year anniversary of us being in this building. We've been
- 30:48Speaker 1: on the air for 41 years, but in this building,
- 30:51Speaker 1: time for a party. That makes sense because like I said, I,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I think it was about 2001, 2002 that that picture
- 30:57Speaker 1: of us, yeah.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Fun stuff, right? All right, let's go back to the phones. 888-564-6173.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Gonna talk to Brenda. Whoops, Brenda. Hi, Brenda, what's your
- 31:10Speaker 1: question for us today?
- 31:13Speaker 1: Hi. Thank you for this ministry. Um, I'm studying 1
- 31:17Speaker 1: Samuel 16. I just wanted clarification on verse 14. Now,
- 31:24Speaker 1: the spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul and
- 31:27Speaker 1: an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Is this because it's like a vacuum and the spirit, uh,
- 31:36Speaker 1: Holy Spirit left Saul and inner David, or is God
- 31:41Speaker 1: directing evil spirits?
- 31:44Speaker 1: Hm, what do you think, Phil?
- 31:45Speaker 1: I think this should speak more to like God allowed
- 31:48Speaker 1: rather than God like forced, but God allowed a a
- 31:52Speaker 1: a tormenting spirit. And so, yeah, does that make sense?
- 31:55Speaker 1: Like it's not a um it's not God's spirit, but
- 31:58Speaker 1: a demonic, a demonic thing and God allowed that to happen.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Brenda, OK, yeah, so, and it, it sounds like from
- 32:10Speaker 1: below the evil spirit would leave him when David was
- 32:13Speaker 1: playing the harp and then apparently would come back and
- 32:16Speaker 1: then they would call for David again.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But it's
- 32:21Speaker 1: Alright, just allowed.
- 32:25Speaker 1: What do you think, Brian? Yeah, I think, you know,
- 32:27Speaker 1: I mean, it says specifically that the spirit of the
- 32:30Speaker 1: Lord departed from Saul and then an evil spirit, and
- 32:34Speaker 1: I think it's almost like the um.
- 32:38Speaker 1: You know, the protection of the of the spirit of
- 32:41Speaker 1: God is removed from Saul. And so now Saul is, um,
- 32:46Speaker 1: you know, he's subject to these, um, demonic, uh, spirits
- 32:51Speaker 1: harassing him, which of course he's given himself over to
- 32:55Speaker 1: because when Samuel rebuke rebukes Saul, uh, he tells him that, uh,
- 33:03Speaker 1: his disobedience.
- 33:05Speaker 1: is equivalent to witchcraft, he says uh for.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Um, rebellion is, what, what, what are the words, but
- 33:17Speaker 1: something as iniquity and a rebellion is as witchcraft. So
- 33:22Speaker 1: he's giving himself over to the demonic by, by rebelling
- 33:26Speaker 1: against God's word. And so now this is just kind
- 33:28Speaker 1: of like the natural consequence of doing that.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Does this help you, Brenda?
- 33:35Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, thank you. Awesome. Thanks for calling us
- 33:38Speaker 1: today at 888-564-6173. Let's
- 33:43Speaker 1: Dive a little deeper with that. So what does that
- 33:45Speaker 1: say about maybe the power of music, or is this
- 33:49Speaker 1: something that was just for that time, or, you know,
- 33:51Speaker 1: when you feel tormented or something, uh, will turning on
- 33:56Speaker 1: K-wave weekend praise all of a sudden alleviate your, your torment, or,
- 34:02Speaker 1: or does it, is it only certain types of music
- 34:05Speaker 1: that might do it, if at all? What do you
- 34:08Speaker 1: guys think, Phil?
- 34:10Speaker 1: I, I think, um, I think it, you're, you're talking
- 34:12Speaker 1: in varying degrees of, I, I don't wanna use the
- 34:15Speaker 1: word torment, but since that's the word used there, tormenting spirit,
- 34:18Speaker 1: you know, for some people like, and we all know
- 34:21Speaker 1: this to be true, like, if you're just having like
- 34:24Speaker 1: seasonal depression, then like music, of course, can be really uplifting.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Right, or for other people, like certain songs in kind
- 34:31Speaker 1: of invoke like a evoke like a torment as well,
- 34:34Speaker 1: you know, right? Like, oh my gosh, I broke up
- 34:35Speaker 1: to my, my girlfriend dumped me and that was the
- 34:37Speaker 1: song that was playing or whatever. So there's like a, a,
- 34:40Speaker 1: a lower level of like emotional, spiritual kind of emotional.
- 34:45Speaker 1: torment that we all feel that like I think music
- 34:46Speaker 1: does have a, an up and down. I would, I
- 34:49Speaker 1: would say at the very top of that, what we're
- 34:51Speaker 1: talking about with Saul and with David is not necessarily,
- 34:55Speaker 1: at least this is my opinion, it's not necessarily the
- 34:57Speaker 1: music itself, but that the spirit was in that.
- 35:02Speaker 1: As David is worshiping, as David is, is singing to
- 35:05Speaker 1: the Lord, there's like the spirit was in it, and that,
- 35:08Speaker 1: that is what Saul was missing in his life, was
- 35:11Speaker 1: the presence of God to bring peace. He had rejected
- 35:14Speaker 1: the Lord and was constantly being tormented. So I, I
- 35:17Speaker 1: would say it at that level. Though I do shout out,
- 35:20Speaker 1: I think good worship can always change our emotional state,
- 35:24Speaker 1: but in terms of like spiritual torment, I would say,
- 35:27Speaker 1: you know, that's the presence of God in music.
- 35:31Speaker 1: That's not, that's a great answer. That's a great insight
- 35:34Speaker 1: to that, that last part, that the part that you
- 35:36Speaker 1: had before, um, of the fact that the spirit is
- 35:41Speaker 1: with David and so David's presence in the spirit through David,
- 35:45Speaker 1: that's what's having the, the calming effect on Saul. I
- 35:48Speaker 1: think that's really good. That's a great insight.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Well, because you, you think later when like when, when
- 35:54Speaker 1: Saul's chasing David and like David like would go in
- 35:56Speaker 1: and grab the staff and grab a part of the robe,
- 35:59Speaker 1: it was like the only time that Saul seemed reasonable
- 36:01Speaker 1: all of a sudden. Oh my, oh my son, he
- 36:04Speaker 1: seemed like it was like the calming presence of God
- 36:07Speaker 1: in the life of David, and it was no music
- 36:09Speaker 1: at that time, so no.
- 36:12Speaker 1: All right. Another call now, this one from Ron and
- 36:15Speaker 1: Tribuco Canyon, watching us on YouTube. Hey there, Ron, welcome
- 36:19Speaker 1: to Pastor's Perspective.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Hello pastors, thank you for taking my call. Um, I
- 36:25Speaker 2: had a question. I just wanted your thoughts on it. Um,
- 36:29Speaker 2: I was reading through Revelation lately, and I, you know,
- 36:32Speaker 2: I've read it many times over the years, and I've
- 36:34Speaker 2: always kind of assumed that when Babylon falls, that it
- 36:39Speaker 2: was God who judged it and destroyed it.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Uh, and primarily because in 188, uh, it sort of
- 36:48Speaker 2: says for these reasons, the plagues will come, pestilence, morning famine,
- 36:51Speaker 2: she'll be burned with fire, for the Lord God who
- 36:53Speaker 2: judges her is strong.
- 36:55Speaker 2: But I happened to notice a couple weeks ago when
- 36:58Speaker 2: I was reading through it in 17.
- 37:01Speaker 2: It says that at the end of 17, um,
- 37:07Speaker 2: In verse 17, chapter 17, and the end of verse 16,
- 37:13Speaker 2: the beast, uh, and the 10 the beast and the
- 37:16Speaker 2: 10 horns will hate the harlot and make her desolate, naked,
- 37:21Speaker 2: eat her flesh and burn her with fire, for the
- 37:22Speaker 2: Lord God has, uh, put it in their hearts to
- 37:26Speaker 2: execute his purpose. So is God using the beast to
- 37:30Speaker 2: judge Babylon? I kind of thought the beast was the
- 37:34Speaker 2: creator of Babylon, but
- 37:37Speaker 2: Maybe you could help me understand.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Brian, um, yeah, those are great questions, Ron, and this,
- 37:44Speaker 1: this is one of the more difficult passages of scripture to,
- 37:51Speaker 1: to really untangle and um.
- 37:56Speaker 1: I, I, I think here.
- 37:59Speaker 1: You do have, it seems like 17 and 18, you
- 38:03Speaker 1: have different facets of Babylon, where 18 is clearly the
- 38:08Speaker 1: um
- 38:10Speaker 1: Uh, like, like the economic and, um, you know, all
- 38:15Speaker 1: of the, it's all, it's all about the trade and
- 38:18Speaker 1: everything that's going to be destroyed. And, and, um, you know, the, the,
- 38:22Speaker 1: the part of it that is what you just might
- 38:25Speaker 1: say the secular aspect of it. But then it seems
- 38:29Speaker 1: like 17 is addressing more like the spiritual nature of it.
- 38:35Speaker 1: So it's a two-sided thing. It's a
- 38:38Speaker 1: Um, there's a spiritual element to it. This is where
- 38:41Speaker 1: some people in the, in the past would see something
- 38:45Speaker 1: like um.
- 38:47Speaker 1: You know, in the end, people used to make reference to,
- 38:51Speaker 1: you know, thinking, thinking it was Rome, thinking that the, the,
- 38:55Speaker 1: the whore herself would be like, um, the church, the,
- 39:01Speaker 1: the apostate Church. And so it's the apostate Church that
- 39:05Speaker 1: is actually the one that's coming under the judgment, um,
- 39:09Speaker 1: by God, but through these, um, through these kings that
- 39:12Speaker 1: take over the
- 39:14Speaker 1: You know, just the more um secular aspect of everything. So, it's,
- 39:20Speaker 1: it's kind of like at this point, um,
- 39:23Speaker 1: Let's just say for argument's sake. So let's just say
- 39:25Speaker 1: there is an apostate church that plays a big role
- 39:27Speaker 1: in this. There's a certain point where that's just eliminated.
- 39:30Speaker 1: And now it's just pure, because you know, the kingdom
- 39:34Speaker 1: of the antichrist is going to come down to the
- 39:37Speaker 1: worship of the beast himself. So there's not going to
- 39:40Speaker 1: be any allowance for the worship of anything else. And
- 39:43Speaker 1: so it could be that this is what's being referred
- 39:46Speaker 1: to there. And as I said, could be, because it's,
- 39:50Speaker 1: it's very difficult to say, you know, with any certainty exactly,
- 39:54Speaker 1: you know, what is happening there.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Does this help you, Ron?
- 39:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it,
- 40:00Speaker 2: it sort of almost made me think that the Babylon
- 40:05Speaker 2: represents the false church, false religion. God has the beast
- 40:09Speaker 2: destroy that to worship him, and then at the end
- 40:14Speaker 2: of 18, God destroys him. So it's like all sort
- 40:17Speaker 2: of cascades to a final end, but
- 40:19Speaker 1: that's just
- 40:20Speaker 1: my.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's, you know, another difficulty is that you have, um, in,
- 40:27Speaker 1: in Revelation, even, you know, back in 13, you, you
- 40:30Speaker 1: do have like parts where is it the kind of
- 40:36Speaker 1: like the kingdom.
- 40:38Speaker 1: So let's just say you have a revived, let's just
- 40:40Speaker 1: say for argument's sake, you have a revived Roman Empire.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Is so when the beast is being referred to, is
- 40:47Speaker 1: it the empire or is it the, the emperor? So,
- 40:51Speaker 1: and I think sometimes there's a, there's a, there's a
- 40:54Speaker 1: blending between the two. And it's hard to distinguish between
- 40:57Speaker 1: is this the individual leader, or is this the empire
- 41:01Speaker 1: that is revived. So.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Ron, thank you for calling us today here on Pastor's Perspective. OK,
- 41:10Speaker 1: remember I told you about, yeah, I just wrote it
- 41:13Speaker 1: down because I remembered that we were supposed to come
- 41:14Speaker 1: back from the break. OK, and it's not that big
- 41:18Speaker 1: of a deal, but, um, you know, in the, in
- 41:21Speaker 1: the Job story, I have read, strangely enough, that Elihu
- 41:28Speaker 1: is supposed to be a type of Christ.
- 41:31Speaker 1: And you know, some commentators have said that. And then
- 41:35Speaker 1: when you read it, you're like,
- 41:37Speaker 1: What? Yeah, I mean.
- 41:40Speaker 1: How, how could they get that? So, uh, so just
- 41:42Speaker 1: in our conversations, Cheryl and I, she said, and do
- 41:45Speaker 1: you know that some people try to say that Eli, Eli,
- 41:48Speaker 1: who is a type of Christ, that is the most
- 41:49Speaker 1: ridiculous thing in the world. And I thought, you know what?
- 41:52Speaker 1: You're right, honey, that is a ridiculous.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Perspective, but you know, it's funny what you'll read in
- 41:59Speaker 1: Bible commentary sometimes that people thought you're like, wait, how
- 42:03Speaker 1: did you think that?
- 42:05Speaker 1: Now everybody tonight is gonna go read Job chapters 332
- 42:09Speaker 1: through 37 to see how in the world, I mean, how,
- 42:13Speaker 1: why do people think that though? I, it could be
- 42:15Speaker 1: some commentators said it one time and then somebody else
- 42:18Speaker 1: thought it sounded possible. What examples or do you know
- 42:22Speaker 1: any of that? What, well, it's a.
- 42:23Speaker 1: You know, supposedly here, you know, these guys are all
- 42:26Speaker 1: exhausted with none of the right answers, and now this
- 42:29Speaker 1: person comes on and he claims to be, you know,
- 42:32Speaker 1: full of wisdom, and I'm gonna sort it all out
- 42:35Speaker 1: for you. So I, I don't know. I mean, it's
- 42:37Speaker 1: like the, the, you know, the publisher should have read
- 42:40Speaker 1: that paragraph in that commentary and said, uh, let's leave
- 42:43Speaker 1: this out. Let's leave that, yeah, yeah.
- 42:47Speaker 1: So, good idea. All right, uh, Christian and Pomona listening
- 42:51Speaker 1: on K Wave. Hello. What's your question for pastors Brian
- 42:54Speaker 1: and Phil Metzko today?
- 42:57Speaker 2: Good evening, pastors. Um, a while ago, you folks were
- 43:00Speaker 2: talking about, um, Luke 6:38.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was, uh, earlier in the program.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Yeah, used to justify tithing. Well, how do we compare
- 43:11Speaker 2: that against Malachi 3:10, which encourages giving for the apparent
- 43:19Speaker 2: purpose of being blessed in manifold blessings. Um, how do
- 43:25Speaker 2: we reconcile those two scriptures to avoid any contradiction?
- 43:30Speaker 1: OK, Phil, what say you?
- 43:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I, I would say it's a great question, thanks,
- 43:34Speaker 1: and thank you for asking it. It's, it's, it's good
- 43:36Speaker 1: to see that. So in Malachi, I would say the
- 43:38Speaker 1: difference between Luke 6, at least the way that people have,
- 43:41Speaker 1: when they try to take that out of context, which again,
- 43:43Speaker 1: if you keep it in the context, you won't have
- 43:45Speaker 1: to worry about that. If you take it out of context,
- 43:47Speaker 1: what you're doing is you're trying to make it a
- 43:49Speaker 1: reciprocal relationship. I give $10 I get $10 or I
- 43:55Speaker 1: get that back, where Malachi,
- 43:58Speaker 1: is very explicit in the idea that like, as you give,
- 44:01Speaker 1: God is gonna bless you.
- 44:03Speaker 1: It isn't a reciprocated, like a a direct reciprocation where
- 44:08Speaker 1: I gave shekels, I get back shekels, I gave dollars,
- 44:11Speaker 1: I get back dollars. It means as I give of
- 44:14Speaker 1: what God's given to me, he is going to be
- 44:16Speaker 1: blessing my life, and that is a promise, that is
- 44:19Speaker 1: a guarantee. God will never be outgiven by us. He
- 44:23Speaker 1: will bless us, but when we, when we make that.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Out of context in Luke 6, it's as if I
- 44:29Speaker 1: gave money and I'm, I'm gonna, it's better than the
- 44:31Speaker 1: stock market. I'm gonna get that same thing back and
- 44:33Speaker 1: that's unbiblical. But it's, but it's even, you know, it's
- 44:37Speaker 1: not even exactly that, Phil, because especially in the prosperity world,
- 44:41Speaker 1: it's give 10, get 1000. Right? Exactly. That's the big draw,
- 44:48Speaker 1: you know, exactly.
- 44:50Speaker 1: We all agree you give, you give 10, God's going
- 44:53Speaker 1: to bless your life, but it may not come back
- 44:56Speaker 1: in the, in the, um, it might not be a Benjamin,
- 44:58Speaker 1: you know, or, or anything like that, you know.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Does this help you, Christian?
- 45:04Speaker 2: It does. You know, I was just guessing, but you
- 45:07Speaker 2: guys nailed it exactly where I had it. So thank you.
- 45:11Speaker 2: And one more thing, um, I wanna thank Michael David
- 45:14Speaker 2: because I was saying, um, Luke 8:38, and he knew
- 45:18Speaker 2: that it was 6:38. So,
- 45:20Speaker 1: uh, that Michael David Bible scholar there. Yeah, you gotta watch.
- 45:24Speaker 1: That's why we have him around. That's right, can keep
- 45:26Speaker 1: us all.
- 45:27Speaker 1: We gotta have a, a, a match between you and
- 45:30Speaker 1: you and Mike to see who can find the addresses quicker. Uh, well,
- 45:36Speaker 1: I know the
- 45:37Speaker 1: General
- 45:39Speaker 2: location.
- 45:40Speaker 1: But I've kind of lost the address thing. That's how
- 45:44Speaker 1: it goes. The address goes. I know the street.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Somewhere over here in this vicinity.
- 45:53Speaker 1: I like that. That's a good, that's a good description.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Scott in Menefee watching us on YouTube. Hi Scott, waving
- 46:00Speaker 1: at you there. Uh, thanks
- 46:01Speaker 2: for
- 46:01Speaker 1: calling
- 46:01Speaker 2: 888-564-6173.
- 46:04Speaker 1: What did you want to ask today?
- 46:06Speaker 2: Hey, how are you doing guys? I really appreciate your ministry.
- 46:09Speaker 2: I've been listening.
- 46:11Speaker 2: I, I told, uh, Michael David probably 30 or 40 years.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, whoa, that is
- 46:17Speaker 2: great. Hannagraph was honored. remember Hank Hanagraph, was that him?
- 46:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Hank, before, yeah, Hank was around, yeah, and that's how,
- 46:25Speaker 2: how far back it, how far back it goes. Anyhow,
- 46:28Speaker 2: my question is, uh, I listen to a couple of
- 46:31Speaker 2: Catholic channels just because I kind of, when I'm listening
- 46:33Speaker 2: to the radio as I'm driving, I think, well,
- 46:36Speaker 2: You know, it's better to listen to that if I
- 46:37Speaker 2: can't get anything else, uh, you know, and some of them,
- 46:41Speaker 2: some of the shows are pretty good, but I, what
- 46:43Speaker 2: my question was about, and this came up on one
- 46:46Speaker 2: of the shows, my question was one of about the
- 46:50Speaker 2: perpetual virginity of, uh, of Mary.
- 46:54Speaker 2: And what came to mind are the scriptures I think
- 46:57Speaker 2: that they, they, uh, put out there was, and let
- 47:01Speaker 2: me see if I.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Just lost my page here. Oh boy. Anyhow, talks about
- 47:08Speaker 2: how when Jesus was uh uh uh uh on the
- 47:12Speaker 2: cross and he looked to his mother.
- 47:15Speaker 2: And he looked to John.
- 47:17Speaker 2: The beloved, and he said to his mother, to John,
- 47:22Speaker 2: this is your mother, and to Mary, this is your son.
- 47:26Speaker 2: And what they were discussing, they were saying that in that,
- 47:30Speaker 2: that society back then, or, you know, the custom wouldn't
- 47:34Speaker 2: be to give your mother a way to live with
- 47:37Speaker 2: somebody that's not part of your family.
- 47:41Speaker 2: And I'm thinking, well, did he do that because there
- 47:46Speaker 2: wasn't anybody else but him.
- 47:48Speaker 2: You know, he was the only son, meaning Jesus.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Hm.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Does that make sense?
- 47:55Speaker 1: Yes, that doesn't make sense. And um I read that
- 47:59Speaker 1: passage this morning actually. The the um.
- 48:05Speaker 1: You know, I think, I think what's happening there is
- 48:07Speaker 1: that
- 48:09Speaker 1: At this stage, you have to remember that the brothers
- 48:12Speaker 1: of Jesus are not believers at this stage. Um, and so,
- 48:17Speaker 1: of course, John is, and there's there's speculation that John
- 48:21Speaker 1: and Jesus were cousins. We don't know that that is
- 48:25Speaker 1: actually the case, but you know, there are those who
- 48:28Speaker 1: think that um there's the reference to Mary's sister and
- 48:32Speaker 1: um there are those who think that the sister of
- 48:34Speaker 1: Mary was the mother of James and John. Um, whether
- 48:37Speaker 1: or not that's
- 48:38Speaker 1: True, we, we can't prove that one way or the other, but, um,
- 48:42Speaker 1: we know that, you know, Jesus, of course, had a
- 48:45Speaker 1: special relationship with John that is hinted at throughout the
- 48:49Speaker 1: Gospel of John, and then I think it's simply the
- 48:53Speaker 1: the responsibility of the family was upon the firstborn son.
- 49:00Speaker 1: So now Jesus is departing.
- 49:04Speaker 1: And he's passing on that responsibility to John because like
- 49:08Speaker 1: I said, at the present moment there are no, it's
- 49:11Speaker 1: not that he doesn't have brothers because we know he
- 49:14Speaker 1: does have brothers from other passages. The Catholic Church would
- 49:17Speaker 1: say that, oh well, those references to brothers are not,
- 49:20Speaker 1: they're not actual brothers, they're more like cousins. Well, no,
- 49:24Speaker 1: I mean there is a word for cousin in Greek
- 49:26Speaker 1: and the the word that's used there is not a
- 49:28Speaker 1: word for cousin, it's a word for brother. So, um,
- 49:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's what's going on there.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Does that help you, Scott? Yeah,
- 49:39Speaker 2: yeah, I was just looking also at, uh, uh, Matthew
- 49:43Speaker 2: 13:55 where it says, isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't
- 49:49Speaker 2: his mother's name Mary and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon,
- 49:54Speaker 2: and Judas? Right, exactly.
- 49:56Speaker 2: That, yeah, I, so that's kind of a good
- 50:00Speaker 1: too, yeah, and the James, the James and the Judas
- 50:02Speaker 1: there are the authors of the epistle of James and
- 50:06Speaker 1: the letter of Jude.
- 50:08Speaker 1: So then the perpetual virginity of Mary, which is taught
- 50:12Speaker 1: by the Roman Catholic Church, yeah, well, this is, I
- 50:16Speaker 1: think it's, this is part of the Roman Catholic mythology,
- 50:19Speaker 1: you know, that there's the, the, the idea that somehow,
- 50:23Speaker 1: so the, the, the immaculate conception is the idea that
- 50:26Speaker 1: Mary was also born sinless and because she had to
- 50:30Speaker 1: be born sinless in order to have a sinless son
- 50:34Speaker 1: and then, um, that.
- 50:38Speaker 1: You know, then the.
- 50:40Speaker 1: The incarnation, the virgin birth, somehow, um, you know, she
- 50:45Speaker 1: remains a virgin because she doesn't.
- 50:49Speaker 1: Have any other children, um, but she does have a husband,
- 50:53Speaker 1: you know Joseph is her husband and Matthew specifically tells
- 50:57Speaker 1: us that they did not have a sexual relationship until.
- 51:01Speaker 1: The birth of Jesus and a till means yes there
- 51:05Speaker 1: was a till there or whatever. Phil, any thoughts?
- 51:09Speaker 1: I know, I think every bit of that was great,
- 51:11Speaker 1: good answers. I love that. I just taught that passage
- 51:14Speaker 1: in John too. It's so powerful. Yeah, yeah, I was
- 51:17Speaker 1: reading this today. I just thought, wow, you know.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Melinda and Murrieta, you are up next on Pastor's Perspective. Hi.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Hi, how are
- 51:26Speaker 1: you? Doing well, thanks. What did you want to know?
- 51:30Speaker 2: Um, I just have a question. I know that, um,
- 51:31Speaker 2: in the Bible, it says that yes, God gives, um,
- 51:34Speaker 2: spiritual insight and wisdom to, um, those who seek it,
- 51:37Speaker 2: but I have had this like, I, it's kind of
- 51:41Speaker 2: scary to see on, um, national, like radio, but, uh,
- 51:44Speaker 2: like 1/6 sense of like a scene is like spice of, um,
- 51:48Speaker 2: like death.
- 51:49Speaker 2: And whenever I see it, usually somebody dies within that
- 51:52Speaker 2: person dies within like a couple of months. I don't
- 51:54Speaker 2: know if it's because I'm close to them, but do
- 51:56Speaker 2: you think that is like of God, or do you
- 51:59Speaker 2: think that is of the devil?
- 52:01Speaker 1: Phil Metzger, what do you think?
- 52:04Speaker 1: Well, um, I don't think those are our only two choices.
- 52:06Speaker 1: That's where I would start. I don't think the two
- 52:09Speaker 1: choices are, it's either God or the devil, not to,
- 52:11Speaker 1: you know, kind of minimize your experiences, but you also
- 52:14Speaker 1: got to account for how the brain can play some
- 52:17Speaker 1: pretty wonky tricks on us, like, you know, the idea
- 52:21Speaker 1: of deja vu, for instance, is the concept of, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: have a short-term memory that, that, that my brain wires
- 52:27Speaker 1: into my long-term memory bank, so it makes me feel
- 52:30Speaker 1: like I've known that forever.
- 52:32Speaker 1: And so, you know, when, when we say, oh, I
- 52:34Speaker 1: have 1/6 sense of something, you might be having this
- 52:37Speaker 1: long-term brain wiring that made you feel like I've had
- 52:41Speaker 1: this thought about that, but it only happened after that
- 52:43Speaker 1: person died, but then your brain is telling you it
- 52:46Speaker 1: happened months before. I'm not trying to say that that's
- 52:48Speaker 1: what you've done. I'm just simply saying there's probably more
- 52:51Speaker 1: than those two options. Obviously, the easy answer would be, um,
- 52:55Speaker 1: if it happened, then it could be from God. If
- 52:57Speaker 1: it didn't happen, then it's definitely not from God, cause
- 53:00Speaker 1: God ain't gonna lie about anything.
- 53:02Speaker 1: And what good did that accomplish? Is there a, is
- 53:04Speaker 1: there a spiritual value to that? God's not giving a
- 53:07Speaker 1: sense for things that doesn't have value. So if it
- 53:10Speaker 1: has eternal value, maybe it, it turned you to go
- 53:13Speaker 1: share Christ with that person or whatnot, then, then I
- 53:15Speaker 1: would say that could be from the Lord. If it's
- 53:17Speaker 1: purely informational, I think the devil loves information, um, God
- 53:22Speaker 1: loves restoration. So I, I, I think those two things
- 53:24Speaker 1: are very different. 90 seconds, Brian. Oh, go ahead, Melinda.
- 53:29Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Sorry, I cut you off too. Um, no, I, that's
- 53:33Speaker 2: a different perspective. I've never looked at it cause, you know,
- 53:35Speaker 2: I used to write letters and like my uncle passed
- 53:37Speaker 2: away and then I would write a letter before he
- 53:39Speaker 2: even passed away and it would tell my dad that, hey,
- 53:42Speaker 2: like when he was alive, like, you know, I saw
- 53:44Speaker 2: Uncle Delbert die and maybe my sister's listening right now too,
- 53:47Speaker 2: but um, uh, yeah, but then he would pass away.
- 53:51Speaker 2: And then my sister, same thing with my sister, and
- 53:53Speaker 2: I don't think it was um maybe because of.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Uh, like, yeah, just for information, but maybe, yeah, maybe
- 54:01Speaker 2: it was because those families needed to say like, you know,
- 54:04Speaker 2: goodbye and lead them to Christ because my family's always been,
- 54:07Speaker 2: you know, believers in the Lord Jesus Christ as our
- 54:09Speaker 2: savior ever since we were children, so I think that, um, yeah,
- 54:13Speaker 2: maybe it was a different perspective I've never saw like
- 54:15Speaker 2: when I was younger, so, but thank you so much
- 54:17Speaker 2: for that information.
- 54:19Speaker 1: One minute, Brian. That's great. No, I would just say, I, I,
- 54:22Speaker 1: I would just say it's not the devil. So, because
- 54:25Speaker 1: the devil doesn't know when people are gonna die. He's
- 54:27Speaker 1: not in charge. God is in charge. So, so we're
- 54:31Speaker 1: gonna eliminate the devil. And then I think, I think
- 54:34Speaker 1: that was a good, good insight, Phil, with the, when
- 54:37Speaker 1: you said deja vu, I thought, I haven't had a
- 54:39Speaker 1: deja vu for a while, but it's like.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Yeah, when you have those, they are so weird. I mean,
- 54:44Speaker 1: you're just like, wait, I've, I've I've done this before.
- 54:47Speaker 1: I've been, you know, you're just in this moment where
- 54:51Speaker 1: you're like, I already lived this moment, but you didn't
- 54:54Speaker 1: live this moment. I'm having deja vu right now that
- 54:56Speaker 1: I've been in a room with you and with Phil
- 54:59Speaker 1: Metzger on the screen. Oh wait, I have. Yesterday, no, Tuesday, yes, but.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Yes, but that is crazy how the, the mind works,
- 55:08Speaker 1: the brain works, and crazy stuff that, yeah, yeah.
- 55:12Speaker 1: That is all the time we have on today's episode
- 55:14Speaker 1: of Pastor's Perspective. Melinda, thank you for calling in today
- 55:18Speaker 1: and uh yeah, we're gonna archive this one like we
- 55:21Speaker 1: archive all of them on Facebook, YouTube, and snow. Facebook, YouTube,
- 55:25Speaker 1: Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. I get confused with all those
- 55:29Speaker 1: different platforms and uh we will be here live again
- 55:32Speaker 1: tomorrow from 3 to 4 p.m. Pacific time. Thank you,
- 55:35Speaker 1: Phil Metzger. Thank you, Brian Broderson, and uh God bless
- 55:38Speaker 1: you all. Thanks for watching and listening to Pastor's Perspective.
