- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode sixty five of Cards
- 0:20Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm Mike cool Aid from Rasball, joined as
- 0:23Speaker 1: always by my very good friend Jeremy Brewer, also from
- 0:27Speaker 1: ras Ball, and I'm gonna have to set you up
- 0:30Speaker 1: for another apology because you've been cursing the heck out
- 0:34Speaker 1: of all these playoff predictions so far.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I think you said the Mets.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Would pull it out, but the Dodgers pulled through and
- 0:41Speaker 1: set it up for a great world series here coming up.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So you want to issue apologies now to your Mets
- 0:47Speaker 1: fans out there this week?
- 0:50Speaker 3: No, yeah, no, I do apologize. I have been hating
- 0:56Speaker 3: on the Dodgers all all all the playoffs, which was
- 1:01Speaker 3: just means there's collateral damage along the way. I'm sorry
- 1:04Speaker 3: Potters fans, I'm sorry Mets fans. If I'm the source
- 1:08Speaker 3: of the jinks. First of all, I need to be
- 1:10Speaker 3: redirecting my powers to good and second of all, we'll
- 1:14Speaker 3: see how the predictions go later tonight as we go through,
- 1:18Speaker 3: and what that means for the world series here. If
- 1:21Speaker 3: I can control fate, New York, LA, you should be listening.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I'll do what I can for you.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and especially anybody out there trying to get any
- 1:29Speaker 1: sorts of predictions and maybe bets in of their own.
- 1:33Speaker 1: This will be very important for you going forward, as
- 1:37Speaker 1: the calendar felt really well for us this year in
- 1:39Speaker 1: terms of being able to do a full World Series previews.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So I think we're just gonna go ahead and dive
- 1:45Speaker 1: right into that that, Like, we'll probably have little recaps
- 1:48Speaker 1: of what happened in n all and CS and ALCS
- 1:51Speaker 1: as we get into some of those previews, and then
- 1:54Speaker 1: in the second half of the show today we're ahead
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the game.
- 1:57Speaker 2: We're actually not like.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Talking about the base card release that's coming up of
- 2:02Speaker 1: Allen and Ginter on release date. We're actually a couple
- 2:04Speaker 1: of weeks out or one week out, so it comes
- 2:06Speaker 1: out on October thirtieth. We are speaking on October twenty third,
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Wednesday night, and so that'll give you a good
- 2:13Speaker 1: just preview of what is in Allen and Ginter and
- 2:17Speaker 1: give you description of all the oddities of it. It's
- 2:20Speaker 1: a it's a really fun baseball card set, So stick
- 2:23Speaker 1: around for that in the second half. But like I said,
- 2:25Speaker 1: let's dive into previewing this World Series, because unfortunately we
- 2:30Speaker 1: missed out on the boat on like being able to
- 2:32Speaker 1: do this for the whole World series and giving our
- 2:34Speaker 1: kind of brackets because of the way that the dates felt.
- 2:37Speaker 3: But this will be.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Fun getting into this matchup between the Dodgers and the Yankees,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and I guess right off the bat, I'm just gonna
- 2:44Speaker 1: hit you with the question of where do you fall
- 2:46Speaker 1: in the continuum of the consternation that's out there in
- 2:50Speaker 1: the public right now of like the two behemoths, like
- 2:52Speaker 1: people hating on it or totally loving it to behemoths.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It's like God'silla versus Kong. It's a fun time.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah. I I generally am not a big fan when
- 3:02Speaker 3: one of the behemoths is there, but when they have
- 3:04Speaker 3: to both show up and duke it out, I'm kind
- 3:07Speaker 3: of for it. I'm kind of for watching, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 3: two fan bases who tend to be very confident, if
- 3:16Speaker 3: I can say that politically correct, and but also at
- 3:20Speaker 3: the the ire of many other fan bases just due
- 3:24Speaker 3: to the payrolls. I should have looked to see the
- 3:26Speaker 3: payroll of this World series alone, of versus how many
- 3:30Speaker 3: other you know divisions that they could buy. It's gonna
- 3:33Speaker 3: it's would has to be pretty gushtarn impressive, but I
- 3:37Speaker 3: think it's gonna be fun. I think you have the
- 3:38Speaker 3: two behemoths, and both teams to degree have been trying
- 3:43Speaker 3: to kind of rise from the ashes of of the
- 3:46Speaker 3: the years many years ago. I know the Dodgers had
- 3:50Speaker 3: their twenty twenty shortened World Series. You can have a
- 3:54Speaker 3: little aster by that one, so but I think it's
- 3:56Speaker 3: been since the late eighties since they they brought one
- 3:59Speaker 3: home as well a full season, So I'm for it.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be fun. I think these two
- 4:04Speaker 3: teams are actually pretty well matched, so I'm just ready
- 4:08Speaker 3: for the fireworks. I don't watch you. Are you on
- 4:11Speaker 3: the bandwagon watching these guys go at it? Or are
- 4:13Speaker 3: you sad that we didn't get the Mets Tigers.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I mean, I'm for both. Like, I think I'm in
- 4:20Speaker 1: the same lane a little bit as you where. Like
- 4:22Speaker 1: I don't necessarily like a incongruent mismatched World Series, but
- 4:28Speaker 1: I am totally in favor of two titans matching up
- 4:32Speaker 1: and giving us something like a Nadal Fedward just like
- 4:36Speaker 1: heavyweight title or total hipster of like going like last
- 4:41Speaker 1: year's Rangers Diamondbacks. You know, something totally out of left field,
- 4:45Speaker 1: So either lane I think works well for me in
- 4:48Speaker 1: my baseball interest, but I think just for the sport overall,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and like there is a piece of me, especially given
- 4:56Speaker 1: we were both growing up in the nineties, and it's
- 4:58Speaker 1: obviously affected our procludies for card collecting a lot and
- 5:03Speaker 1: in our aesthetics there, but it also I think has
- 5:06Speaker 1: affected my esthetics for playoffs in what I look for.
- 5:10Speaker 1: That like, we were treated to a lot of great
- 5:13Speaker 1: playoff matchups throughout the nineties because of the introduced and
- 5:16Speaker 1: introduction of the wild card in nineteen ninety three, but
- 5:19Speaker 1: even before that, I mean, I mean, I have brief
- 5:23Speaker 1: memories of like the ninety two World Series and ninety
- 5:26Speaker 1: one like it I the it's it's the I forget
- 5:30Speaker 1: what the call, but you know those memories where you
- 5:31Speaker 1: like there's a certain name for them, where as a kid,
- 5:35Speaker 1: you kind of imagine them into your brain just because
- 5:38Speaker 1: like you know that they existed and like you were
- 5:40Speaker 1: part of it. And like I think because you know,
- 5:42Speaker 1: we've seen enough pictures of like the ninety one World Series,
- 5:45Speaker 1: which was fantastic that like, I feel like I saw it,
- 5:49Speaker 1: but I don't think I actually did, you know, but
- 5:53Speaker 1: on top of it all, like the nineties featured a
- 5:55Speaker 1: lot of Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees dynasties, so
- 5:58Speaker 1: there is just something special. So I think about two
- 6:01Speaker 1: really huge, really awesome franchises really you know, coming together
- 6:06Speaker 1: locking horns, and it's great. I mean, we haven't had
- 6:08Speaker 1: a Yankees Dodgers World Series since nineteen eighty one, so
- 6:12Speaker 1: we're not exactly like in the boat to complain about
- 6:15Speaker 1: this being the most common World Series matchup of all time,
- 6:19Speaker 1: because we've missed so many of them throughout the forties, fifties, sixties,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and so I'm really excited to just see. Also, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: the cross country element to this, where they have to
- 6:29Speaker 1: go from New York to La the two biggest metro
- 6:32Speaker 1: areas within the United States. That it's just like there's
- 6:35Speaker 1: something truly America and truly Baseball about this matchup that
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'm really digging well.
- 6:42Speaker 3: And I you know, if we make the connection to
- 6:44Speaker 3: our second half here, you also have to say these
- 6:47Speaker 3: are two of the probably most aggressive fan bases in
- 6:51Speaker 3: the baseball card world as far as just you know,
- 6:56Speaker 3: being willing to go out there and just turn the
- 6:58Speaker 3: market upside down. You can go night tonight and just
- 7:01Speaker 3: have whoever is the walk off star of the game. Uh,
- 7:05Speaker 3: market can completely you know, double, triple, quadruple, whatever it
- 7:09Speaker 3: may be, just because of the size of that market
- 7:13Speaker 3: and the the collectibility of those teams, and so it's
- 7:17Speaker 3: it's crazy to see how wide that market is for
- 7:21Speaker 3: some of those teams. And so you do have a
- 7:23Speaker 3: very very large contingents of folks that are going to
- 7:26Speaker 3: be cheering for their team, and I think there's a
- 7:28Speaker 3: large contingent just just tuning in because of the goliath
- 7:32Speaker 3: nature of this. You got Otani versus Soto and maybe Judge.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I don't know how you how you work that one in,
- 7:38Speaker 3: but you you've got really this uh impressive, impressive uh
- 7:44Speaker 3: heavyweight weight battle that I think everybody's gonna be tuned into.
- 7:47Speaker 3: So I think it's gonna get a lot of viewership.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I think it's gonna have some pretty cool stories, and
- 7:51Speaker 3: I don't think this is one that's gonna just you know,
- 7:54Speaker 3: go four or five games. I think we're gonna be
- 7:56Speaker 3: in for quite the treat here.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I really hope so.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And on top of at all, you know, we're looking
- 8:01Speaker 1: at maybe watching five future Hall of famers between Otani, Freeman, Betts,
- 8:07Speaker 1: Judge and Soto. So like you've got Cole is in
- 8:13Speaker 1: there too, so six and I mean Stanton is creeping
- 8:15Speaker 1: up by five hundred homers.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw the arguments were staying. I'm just not
- 8:19Speaker 3: sure I mother yet.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and on top of it all, you know, you
- 8:24Speaker 2: could still get a really late Guyvin Lux breakout right.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I was gonna stick with Luke Weaver, but you know.
- 8:34Speaker 1: But yeah, that was a good call on the cards too.
- 8:37Speaker 1: So like it is a good time to start going
- 8:40Speaker 1: through these rosters and finding the back ends of those
- 8:44Speaker 1: rosters that you know, you got to find some of
- 8:46Speaker 1: your John Birdie rookie cards and your Kevin Kiermeyer rookie
- 8:50Speaker 1: cards that might be buried in those boxes from long ago.
- 8:55Speaker 1: That there's a possibility if they come up big, that
- 8:57Speaker 1: those will shoot up overnight. We were just talking before
- 9:00Speaker 1: the podcast. The Tommy Dmen prices have been through the
- 9:03Speaker 1: roof since he won the NLCS MVP. So certainly if
- 9:07Speaker 1: you are listening and have held any Edmin cards, go
- 9:10Speaker 1: and dig those out, because I'm certainly about.
- 9:13Speaker 2: To after this.
- 9:14Speaker 1: The prices have really shot through the roof, and this
- 9:17Speaker 1: is kind of like you get a one week window
- 9:19Speaker 1: for some of these things, maybe even a couple of
- 9:21Speaker 1: days depending on the level of the star. So you've
- 9:24Speaker 1: got to act pretty quick. But if you are reasonable
- 9:27Speaker 1: in your negotiations putting it on eBay that you can
- 9:31Speaker 1: you can turn these cards pretty quickly.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty quickly. And maybe if you have an old
- 9:36Speaker 3: PC of players that haven't really worked out for your
- 9:39Speaker 3: team and they've gone for glory elsewhere, thank you, Tommy Edmon,
- 9:43Speaker 3: then maybe you can you can enjoy the playoffs just
- 9:46Speaker 3: as much as ions.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Yes, Okay, well, I think we will get into just
- 9:51Speaker 1: breaking this matchup down piece by piece. So I figured
- 9:54Speaker 1: we'd go through kind of like five major bullet points
- 9:57Speaker 1: in terms of comparing their lineups, the starting pitching, their bullpens,
- 10:02Speaker 1: their managers, and then any sort of X factors. So
- 10:06Speaker 1: if this had been the Mets, like this is where
- 10:09Speaker 1: the Grimace and the Wrizzler and all the other sort
- 10:12Speaker 1: of like goofy mascot things that they had going on
- 10:15Speaker 1: would go in there, Uh, can't do that with the
- 10:17Speaker 1: Yankees and the Dodgers. They don't have any mascots. I
- 10:19Speaker 1: think they're the only two MLB teams without a mascot.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So there is a stuffiness I think to this overall
- 10:27Speaker 1: world series like a hotty Toddy like nature in terms
- 10:30Speaker 1: of the way that these franchises view each other view themselves.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And maybe that is a little off putting to some,
- 10:35Speaker 1: but win yours gives the Dodgers and the Yankees.
- 10:38Speaker 2: You also earn it over time, you know, do.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I need to shave my beard to be able to
- 10:42Speaker 3: talk about this world series?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Maybe when it moves to New York.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So I think you can save that for Monday, Okay,
- 10:51Speaker 1: all right, So yeah, we will get into Let's go
- 10:54Speaker 1: through the lineups. So we've actually got the two top
- 10:57Speaker 1: offenses from the twenty twenty four regular season. The Dodgers
- 11:01Speaker 1: were number one with a one eighteen WRC plus and
- 11:03Speaker 1: the Yankees were second with a one seventeen. We covered
- 11:07Speaker 1: some of the big hitters in terms of those Hall
- 11:09Speaker 1: of Fame names, So the Dodgers I think are rolling
- 11:13Speaker 1: in the hottest of the two in terms of especially
- 11:16Speaker 1: given how much they scored in that NLCS, and it
- 11:21Speaker 1: was a pretty uninteresting NCS overall just because of the
- 11:24Speaker 1: volume of scoring. The Yankees, on the other hand, are
- 11:28Speaker 1: I mean they've been playing in colder weather and they've
- 11:30Speaker 1: been facing a little bit better pitching staffs, especially with Cleveland.
- 11:33Speaker 1: So it's not necessarily that they have a worst lineup
- 11:37Speaker 1: that it's just that, you know, the path hasn't been
- 11:41Speaker 1: congruent on each side. So for the Dodgers, you're looking
- 11:44Speaker 1: at a lineup that will go Otani, Betts, Freeman, Muncie Jascar, Hernandez,
- 11:52Speaker 1: Gavin Lux, Will Smith, Tommy Edmund, Enrique Hernandez, and so
- 11:57Speaker 1: with that you also kind of see some shuffling with
- 12:00Speaker 1: Nery Kuer Hernandez and his utility abilities that you know
- 12:03Speaker 1: he will play some third base, and we got to
- 12:06Speaker 1: see how Freddy Freeman is gonna be feeling. He's been
- 12:09Speaker 1: nursing that that ankle over the past, you know, a
- 12:11Speaker 1: couple of weeks, and it's been rough watching him. But
- 12:15Speaker 1: there are times that the Dodgers will move Monthly over
- 12:17Speaker 1: to first base and put Enrique Hernandez over at third,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and then you get some spells in the outfield from
- 12:24Speaker 1: Andy Pajaes and Kevin Kiermeier. Backup catcher is Austin Barnes,
- 12:29Speaker 1: another utility man, and Chris Taylor over in the Bronx
- 12:33Speaker 1: We've got a lineup that's been running Labor Torres, Juan Soto, Judge,
- 12:38Speaker 1: Austin Wells, Gihn, Carlos Stanton, Jazz Chisholm, Anthony Volpi, Anthony Rizzo,
- 12:44Speaker 1: Alex Berdugo. And then we've been seeing some you know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: platooning between Austin Wells and Jose Travino, John Birdie and
- 12:53Speaker 1: Anthony Rizzo, John Berdy, you know, give him that first
- 12:56Speaker 1: crack at first base in his career during these playoffs.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And then you got bench players in Osvaldo Carrera, Jason Deminguez,
- 13:04Speaker 1: Trent Grisham. So pretty well rounded lineups on each side
- 13:10Speaker 1: that you know, I'm not seeing too many holes when
- 13:13Speaker 1: I look up and down. But is there one lineup
- 13:16Speaker 1: that you are preferring over the other right now?
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:19Speaker 3: I mean, you're You're absolutely right. They are very very comparable.
- 13:23Speaker 3: They are both you know, top lineups that they absolutely are.
- 13:28Speaker 3: And so I if I'm going top to bottom, I'm
- 13:30Speaker 3: probably leaning into the Dodgers right now.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Now.
- 13:33Speaker 3: As far as is that lineup concerned, you know, they
- 13:36Speaker 3: they have been nothing short of impressive. They have I believe,
- 13:41Speaker 3: seven hitters with the WRC plus above one hundred, so
- 13:44Speaker 3: uh seven of the guys in the lineup, and that's
- 13:48Speaker 3: in saying Freddy Freeman and Will Smith have not been
- 13:50Speaker 3: doing that, and so that means all the other guys
- 13:53Speaker 3: that I'll call them the quote unquote role players and
- 13:55Speaker 3: Max Munseis and Hernandez's, Tommy Edmonds and de Pajes like
- 13:59Speaker 3: all those as you're clicking on all cylinders right now
- 14:02Speaker 3: and picking up where some of the big names have
- 14:04Speaker 3: been struggling. And so if they're keeping that momentum and
- 14:07Speaker 3: then Freeman's feeling a little better, you know, I think
- 14:10Speaker 3: people have been down on Otani like saying that he
- 14:12Speaker 3: hasn't been doing those off seeing the problem is they're
- 14:14Speaker 3: literally walking him every time he gets up, and so
- 14:18Speaker 3: you know he is on is on base percentage of
- 14:21Speaker 3: four thirty four. It's only Max Monsey on the team
- 14:24Speaker 3: of the four sixty eight. That's just because Max Max months.
- 14:26Speaker 3: He's literally walking in a quarter of his plate appearances.
- 14:30Speaker 3: And uh, it's Max Monsey doing Max monthly things. So
- 14:33Speaker 3: I have to go with that lineup. I do think
- 14:35Speaker 3: maybe from like a one to four perspective, the Yankees
- 14:38Speaker 3: probably have a better lineup, which is I mean It's
- 14:41Speaker 3: hard to say when you're talking Betts and a Tani,
- 14:44Speaker 3: you know freemen here on one side, and then you're
- 14:46Speaker 3: talking you know, Judge and Soto and you know over
- 14:49Speaker 3: on the other side. I probably think it's a little
- 14:52Speaker 3: stronger on that one to four of the Yankees, and
- 14:54Speaker 3: I think that's that's really where it's gonna get interesting
- 14:56Speaker 3: here to see from the Dodgers pitching, can they get
- 14:59Speaker 3: through that top of the lineup and then you know,
- 15:02Speaker 3: make make their ways with the bottom bottom of the
- 15:04Speaker 3: Yankees lineup where it's just not been as as strong
- 15:07Speaker 3: with Chisholm's definitely a struggle. Ford goes not been you know,
- 15:11Speaker 3: you know, anything to right home about From a catching perspective,
- 15:14Speaker 3: Austin Wells was really delivering with a negative one WRC plus.
- 15:18Speaker 3: So that's that's what happens when you strike out forty
- 15:20Speaker 3: two percent of the time in the playoffs. So you know,
- 15:24Speaker 3: I think that it's gonna be a tale of one
- 15:28Speaker 3: lineup that's a little deeper and the role players making
- 15:30Speaker 3: a difference versus the Yankees a little top heavy right now,
- 15:34Speaker 3: not necessarily in a bad way. They absolutely can get
- 15:37Speaker 3: three guys on knock it in and score four runs
- 15:39Speaker 3: on you in the first scene without any hesitation. So
- 15:43Speaker 3: I'm taking the Dodgers by by a smidge Here, am
- 15:45Speaker 3: I wrong or where are you aligning?
- 15:49Speaker 2: I think I'm actually in the same boat that like.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I think I do Dodgers by a little bit, mostly
- 15:55Speaker 1: because I like the way that it flows a little better.
- 15:58Speaker 1: That you know, you've got danger throughout that entire lineup
- 16:02Speaker 1: one through nine and it can turn really fast and
- 16:06Speaker 1: just a lot more contact, it feels like throughout that lineup,
- 16:10Speaker 1: as well as just lots of really fantastic hitters from
- 16:15Speaker 1: top to bottom. You know, the Taoscar Hernandez hitting fifth
- 16:18Speaker 1: is going to be really huge for them. And Will
- 16:20Speaker 1: Smith has started to show a little bit more over
- 16:24Speaker 1: these past couple of weeks than he has over the
- 16:28Speaker 1: back end of the second half. That like that I
- 16:31Speaker 1: think is an important factor if they can get Will
- 16:33Speaker 1: Smith going. We've seen Tommy Edmond has really been locked
- 16:35Speaker 1: in in these playoffs, hence that NLCS MVP, and that
- 16:41Speaker 1: gives them that switchy bat at the bottom. The Yankees,
- 16:45Speaker 1: I will say that, like the Jazz Chisholm acquisition, this
- 16:48Speaker 1: is where it's kind of it's really helping to be
- 16:50Speaker 1: able slot him into six. Unfortunately, like I don't, Jazz
- 16:55Speaker 1: is one player where like you can tell sometimes players
- 16:57Speaker 1: that just can't play in cold, and Jazz looks like
- 17:00Speaker 1: one of those that he just does not look comfortable.
- 17:03Speaker 1: And I do wonder if maybe he finds a groove
- 17:06Speaker 1: in Los Angeles that, like it reminds me a little
- 17:10Speaker 1: bit of like Jose Bray, you just also has never
- 17:12Speaker 1: beat it up well at the beginning of seasons because
- 17:15Speaker 1: he just hasn't been able to adjust to that cold,
- 17:17Speaker 1: and so like that could be a turning factor. I
- 17:21Speaker 1: think for the Yankees, if they can get Chise home
- 17:24Speaker 1: like going at all, then it does flip the coin
- 17:28Speaker 1: for me. I think that, you know, if Jazz can
- 17:30Speaker 1: be an important player for the Yankees and actually kind
- 17:35Speaker 1: of show that what he's capable of at the not
- 17:39Speaker 1: the top end, but you know, up there a little bit,
- 17:41Speaker 1: then it it changes the dynamics where you're not as
- 17:45Speaker 1: relying as much from Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpi and
- 17:48Speaker 1: alex Erdugo at the bomb of that Yankees lineup that
- 17:51Speaker 1: they only have to you know, poke a single or
- 17:54Speaker 1: get a walk to be able to turn things over.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It's also crazy that, yeah, we went through all that
- 17:59Speaker 1: and like barely touched on those Hall of famers that
- 18:02Speaker 1: are impacting these lineups that obviously that's gonna be.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Pretty huge portion of this series.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Jan Soto looks totally locked in and when he hit
- 18:12Speaker 1: that walk off three run bomb that it was peak
- 18:15Speaker 1: Soto and Otani's on the same boat for the Dodgers.
- 18:19Speaker 1: So it's like it's a matter of like it and
- 18:22Speaker 1: maybe that is part of it. Is like focusing on
- 18:25Speaker 1: the back end of these lineups is the most important
- 18:28Speaker 1: strategies as you're going in and evaluating them, because it's
- 18:31Speaker 1: how can you contain those guys and deal with the
- 18:35Speaker 1: damage that all of these big MVPs are gonna do
- 18:37Speaker 1: against you?
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, because you know, you really you look at what's
- 18:41Speaker 3: interesting is that Yankees lineup. You have seven guys this
- 18:45Speaker 3: postseason are walking more than ten percent, like they are
- 18:49Speaker 3: getting on base, and that's gonna be hard. But if
- 18:53Speaker 3: it's the top guys doing that and then the bottom
- 18:55Speaker 3: isn't delivering, then you know, those light for the Dodgers
- 18:59Speaker 3: like it. It really comes down to I think a
- 19:01Speaker 3: lot of what the Yankees lineup's gonna bear against the
- 19:04Speaker 3: Dodgers pitching. I think it's a lot of the conversation
- 19:06Speaker 3: that we're going to run into here. I think the
- 19:08Speaker 3: Dodgers are gonna hit. I think the Yankees are gonna pitch.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I think they're gonna kind of, you know, go blow
- 19:12Speaker 3: for blow there. I think a lot of this comes
- 19:14Speaker 3: down to, you know, can the Yankees role players, you know,
- 19:17Speaker 3: string some things together and put some crooked numbers up
- 19:20Speaker 3: there against what we'll get into it the Dodgers pitching.
- 19:24Speaker 3: And I've said this the whole postseason, and the hitting
- 19:28Speaker 3: has proved me wrong, has been a little suspect, So
- 19:32Speaker 3: we'll see about that. But I do think that to
- 19:36Speaker 3: say that those role players are going to play a big,
- 19:39Speaker 3: big role in the World Series.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and so we both got Dodgers for lineup.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Let's get into that starting pitching, because honestly, I think
- 19:47Speaker 1: this is probably the most lopsided one in terms of
- 19:51Speaker 1: what we're looking at that the Dodgers are currently slated
- 19:53Speaker 1: for the first four games to go Jack Flaherty, Yoshi
- 19:57Speaker 1: Nobo Yamamoto, Walker Buehler, and then game for their rotation. Uh,
- 20:02Speaker 1: that kind of already spells out where I think this
- 20:05Speaker 1: thing is going and the Yankees, on the other hand,
- 20:08Speaker 1: are throwing Garrett Cole, Carlos Rodin, Clark Schmidt, and Louis
- 20:12Speaker 1: Heel During the postseason so far, the Dodgers have had
- 20:16Speaker 1: a six to zho eight AR array. The Yankee starters
- 20:19Speaker 1: have had a three eighty nine AR array. I'm obviously
- 20:23Speaker 1: going Yankees here, but break it down a little further detail.
- 20:27Speaker 1: What do you think really gives the Yankees that upper
- 20:29Speaker 1: hand other than obviously the paper numbers that like, is
- 20:34Speaker 1: there a strategy that they can employ and leverage here,
- 20:38Speaker 1: because this is probably where the Yankee strength is compared
- 20:41Speaker 1: to the Dodgers.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Yeah, if you look at and I know we'll talk
- 20:45Speaker 3: a little bit X factors later, but I have to
- 20:47Speaker 3: get a little into it now. If you look at,
- 20:50Speaker 3: you know, the one spot within all the World Series
- 20:54Speaker 3: that you know, one player or one kind of set
- 20:56Speaker 3: of players could just dominate, it's the Yankees in the
- 21:00Speaker 3: rotation and to a degree the bullpen, which we'll talk about,
- 21:03Speaker 3: but it's Garrett Cole. And it comes down to Garrett
- 21:06Speaker 3: Cole is a workhorse and he is a big game pitcher.
- 21:10Speaker 3: He's not been amazing in the playoffs, he's been good,
- 21:13Speaker 3: but he's absolutely the guy that can go seven three
- 21:17Speaker 3: times in the World Series, Like there's you know, if
- 21:19Speaker 3: they need him to, they're and they're absolutely gonna try
- 21:22Speaker 3: to get that to you know, put him on a
- 21:23Speaker 3: short rest and try to get him the potential if
- 21:26Speaker 3: there's a game seven to go into it. So it's
- 21:28Speaker 3: it's very not inconceivable that Garrett Cole could go three
- 21:31Speaker 3: and zero during the World Series here and all they
- 21:34Speaker 3: have to do is find one other win. And you know,
- 21:37Speaker 3: if you look at it, it's not that they're incredibly deep.
- 21:40Speaker 3: It's like they have coal and then they have decent pictures.
- 21:43Speaker 3: After that they can stand up. They can kind of
- 21:46Speaker 3: hold his human check to see if that lineup can
- 21:48Speaker 3: do enough. On the Dodgers side, there's a heck of
- 21:50Speaker 3: a lot of potential, but nobody seems to really be
- 21:54Speaker 3: clicking on all cylinders right now. And that's the issues
- 21:57Speaker 3: that you know, so I look at, you know, really
- 22:00Speaker 3: down to you got a true number one that is
- 22:02Speaker 3: pitching like a number one and there's not a question
- 22:04Speaker 3: about that. And then you've got some Dodgers have a
- 22:07Speaker 3: few number one issues, one of bees and they're just
- 22:11Speaker 3: not pitching that way. I don't think it's the Clark
- 22:14Speaker 3: Schmidt's of the world, or at least Heels or anybody
- 22:17Speaker 3: know that's going to really make a huge difference here.
- 22:19Speaker 3: I think we're to see runs in those games.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that makes sense, and I think
- 22:25Speaker 1: that's a that's a good point on these the starting
- 22:27Speaker 1: pitching for the Yankees. That the deeper that they can
- 22:30Speaker 1: go with those guys and get more out of them,
- 22:32Speaker 1: the less exposed their bullpen is. And that's I think
- 22:35Speaker 1: going to be a really important thing for this series
- 22:39Speaker 1: in terms of making sure that you're not exposing your
- 22:43Speaker 1: relievers to the other sides bats too often between like
- 22:49Speaker 1: either I was reading something in terms of not only
- 22:53Speaker 1: like Otani when they were seeing some of these pitchers
- 22:57Speaker 1: that were rolling through or no, actually it was actually
- 23:00Speaker 1: I think it was Soto who said against Cleveland, you know,
- 23:03Speaker 1: they were trying to figure out why the Yankees had
- 23:05Speaker 1: done so well against the Cleveland bullpen and even though
- 23:09Speaker 1: like you know, Soto had only faced some of the
- 23:11Speaker 1: top ends of that arms from Cleveland, that just seeing
- 23:15Speaker 1: them throw in front of you live, you know, like
- 23:18Speaker 1: against other players in seeing it from the dugout or
- 23:21Speaker 1: seeing it from the on deck circle. It just allows
- 23:24Speaker 1: you to see it in person as opposed to through
- 23:27Speaker 1: video or any of these prep machines that they have
- 23:30Speaker 1: where you can dial in the exact parameters of anybody's
- 23:34Speaker 1: pitch and get it thrown to you. And so I
- 23:37Speaker 1: think that is a that's an important thing to keep
- 23:39Speaker 1: in mind as we get into the bullpen usages here.
- 23:43Speaker 1: But yeah, I'm gonna flip over into that conversation now.
- 23:46Speaker 1: So in terms of the bullpens, the postseason eras have
- 23:50Speaker 1: been relatively similar. The Dodgers have had a three sixteen
- 23:53Speaker 1: array and the Yankees have had a two fifty six ERA.
- 23:57Speaker 1: So far in the postseason, the Dodger seven had to
- 24:00Speaker 1: use theirs in too high leverage of spots given that
- 24:04Speaker 1: the NLCS was lots of blowouts, but certainly leaned on
- 24:08Speaker 1: them plenty, including you know, clinching that last game of
- 24:12Speaker 1: the NLCS with an all bullpen game, planning for a
- 24:15Speaker 1: bullpen game in Game four. And then the Yankees, on
- 24:19Speaker 1: the other hand, have seen lots of high leverage work
- 24:21Speaker 1: because they've been battling with the Cleveland Guardians. We've got
- 24:26Speaker 1: to see lots of Luke Weaver, lots of Clay Holmes action,
- 24:29Speaker 1: lots of their kind of main guys throwing stressful innings
- 24:33Speaker 1: in the Championship series. So which bullpen do you prefer
- 24:37Speaker 1: out of the two that we've got presented here? And
- 24:41Speaker 1: what players are you looking for from those bullpens to
- 24:44Speaker 1: really maybe kind of shine and have stand up performances
- 24:46Speaker 1: in this world series?
- 24:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think this is very very close
- 24:50Speaker 3: as far as the bullpens here, and so I'm going
- 24:53Speaker 3: to start with who I think is the most dangerous
- 24:56Speaker 3: pitcher here, and I do think it's Luke Weaver. I
- 24:58Speaker 3: don't understand, not necessarily, but if you watch and you
- 25:02Speaker 3: look at what he's doing, he looks unhittable, and sure
- 25:06Speaker 3: is there some luck in there, yes, absolutely, but that
- 25:09Speaker 3: the playoffs, it doesn't matter as long as you can
- 25:11Speaker 3: ride that luck train long enough. Luke Weaver has looked
- 25:14Speaker 3: incredibly dominant. But if you go like kind of top
- 25:17Speaker 3: to bottom bullpen, I think I have to go with
- 25:20Speaker 3: the Dodgers. And again, I think this is the theme
- 25:21Speaker 3: that we're seeing as far as the top ends on
- 25:23Speaker 3: the Yankees. Is the top end, but then they get
- 25:27Speaker 3: thin a lot faster for the Dodgers. I mean, you
- 25:31Speaker 3: get pretty deep at that bullpen, probably five six guys.
- 25:33Speaker 3: You got Blake training, you got Evan Phillips, Anthony Band
- 25:36Speaker 3: has been pitching well, Kopek has been pitching well, Daniel
- 25:39Speaker 3: Hudson's been pitching well. Brazier he's gotten knocked around a
- 25:43Speaker 3: little bit, but he's generally always been a solid pitcher,
- 25:47Speaker 3: and you're kind of looking for bulk things like that.
- 25:49Speaker 3: So they've looked really, really good in the Dodgers' bullpen,
- 25:54Speaker 3: and that's you know it. Can it last with with
- 25:57Speaker 3: the rotation is the question. And to your point as
- 26:00Speaker 3: far as seeing those arms, I think that that favors
- 26:04Speaker 3: the Yankees. As they get into the later games of
- 26:07Speaker 3: the series, they will see these arms quite a bit
- 26:10Speaker 3: because the Dodgers they're not gonna go deep into games.
- 26:12Speaker 3: They're gonna they're gonna try to get five out of
- 26:14Speaker 3: their guys with Flaherty, with Moto Bueler, they're gonna try
- 26:17Speaker 3: to get five innings out of them and then turn
- 26:19Speaker 3: it over that bullpen and try to string the innings together.
- 26:21Speaker 3: So if I'm taking a bullpen, I'm taking I'm taking
- 26:24Speaker 3: the Dodgers. But There's nothing against Clay Holmes the Weaver.
- 26:29Speaker 3: They are really good. I just don't think they're as deep.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's fair.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I actually I think I prefer the Yankees bullpen just
- 26:36Speaker 1: because I've liked what Weaver and Holmes and Kinlee have
- 26:43Speaker 1: shown so far. Jake Cousins is also a pretty solid
- 26:47Speaker 1: reliever in terms of that fastball slider mix. And then
- 26:50Speaker 1: you've also got Marcus Stroman just kind of like hanging
- 26:52Speaker 1: out there in long relief to be able to help
- 26:55Speaker 1: in terms of, you know, if if the Dodgers offense
- 26:58Speaker 1: blows up one of your starters, you can turn to
- 27:01Speaker 1: Stroman to be able to absorb some of those innings
- 27:03Speaker 1: and maybe even keep you in that game to allow
- 27:05Speaker 1: your offense to come back. I prefer the left handed
- 27:10Speaker 1: options in the Yankees bullpen too. You've only got one
- 27:13Speaker 1: lefty right now in the Dodgers' bullpen with Anthony Banda.
- 27:16Speaker 1: You get two between Tim Hill, who started the season
- 27:19Speaker 1: with the White Sox and got cut in the Yankees
- 27:22Speaker 1: bullpen and Tim Maza too. The other factor I think
- 27:27Speaker 1: of why I like the Yankees a little bit better
- 27:30Speaker 1: is it's more of like a nebulous thing in terms
- 27:33Speaker 1: of they're actually running one pitcher less on their roster
- 27:38Speaker 1: than the Dodgers are because of what we've talked about
- 27:41Speaker 1: in terms of some of the starting pishing issues that
- 27:43Speaker 1: the Dodgers have had. That gives them an extra bat
- 27:46Speaker 1: on their bench. And if we're talking about a tight
- 27:48Speaker 1: World Series that could go seven, could have extra innings
- 27:51Speaker 1: here and there, you want as many bats on that
- 27:54Speaker 1: bench to be able to mix and match as possible.
- 27:57Speaker 1: And the strength of the like overall bullpen, I think
- 28:02Speaker 1: for the Yankees allows them to do that a little
- 28:04Speaker 1: bit more. Where these guys I think are a little
- 28:06Speaker 1: bit more dependable as opposed to the Dodgers bullpen. There's
- 28:11Speaker 1: a there's a few question marks in there, you know,
- 28:13Speaker 1: I see that. You know, Daniel Hudson has been banged
- 28:15Speaker 1: up all year. Michael Kopek doesn't. You don't know which
- 28:19Speaker 1: Michael Kopek showing up at the yard at any given time.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Anthony Banda has you know, been up and down throughout
- 28:26Speaker 1: his career. Evan Phillips has gone through struggles this year
- 28:29Speaker 1: that like there, I just feel a lot more solid
- 28:31Speaker 1: rolling with that Yankees bullpen.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Yeah. Again, I think these are so close. I think
- 28:37Speaker 3: you you know, it's it's not gonna take much for
- 28:39Speaker 3: one of these to look good, and you're gonna end
- 28:41Speaker 3: up with those those bullpen games or something like that
- 28:43Speaker 3: where you string together two or three innings from each
- 28:46Speaker 3: lever and we look up and say, what happened? Uh So,
- 28:50Speaker 3: I think there's these These bullpens are going to play
- 28:52Speaker 3: a big, big role in this World Series.
- 28:55Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's get into the managers a little bit, which, Yeah,
- 28:59Speaker 1: this will be a fun one because we've got two
- 29:01Speaker 1: of the like most prominent managers in the game going here.
- 29:05Speaker 1: As we've got Aaron Boone for the Yankees spend their
- 29:07Speaker 1: seven years has gone six oho three four twenty nine
- 29:11Speaker 1: in the regular season. That's a five eighty four winning percentage.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Dave Roberts has been with the Dodgers for nine years
- 29:19Speaker 1: and he has an eight point fifty one and five
- 29:21Speaker 1: oh sixth record. That's a six twenty seven winning percentage.
- 29:24Speaker 2: That's insane.
- 29:25Speaker 1: That's part of it is buoyed by the twenty twenty
- 29:28Speaker 1: season when they had that seven seventeen winning percentage, winning
- 29:32Speaker 1: forty three out of sixty. But uh, you've got I
- 29:35Speaker 1: would say it's tough to put my finger on like
- 29:39Speaker 1: the right word for these managers because obviously they're they're
- 29:42Speaker 1: maligned in terms of like you're also playing in two
- 29:45Speaker 1: pretty large media markets. These are two managers that they
- 29:50Speaker 1: actually get mentioned on ESPN on like most in Major
- 29:55Speaker 1: League Baseball, so there's been a lot of scrutiny on
- 29:58Speaker 1: them as on top of like they're the Yankees and
- 30:00Speaker 1: the Dodgers. There's a lot of money spent on these teams.
- 30:03Speaker 1: There's a lot of expectations heaped on these managers, and
- 30:06Speaker 1: so they've taken their flack over the years, but those
- 30:09Speaker 1: records reflect that, you know, they've piloted these these franchises
- 30:14Speaker 1: in the right direction during their ten uears. Is there
- 30:17Speaker 1: one manager that you prefer over the other, either in
- 30:20Speaker 1: terms of demeanor or maybe that's the way that they
- 30:23Speaker 1: execute the game from a from a managerial standpoint.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's it's tough to compare. To your point,
- 30:30Speaker 3: they're both I don't say figureheads, but you know they're
- 30:35Speaker 3: their role is to maintain and contain the team, make
- 30:41Speaker 3: sure that they're doing what they need to do, and
- 30:42Speaker 3: then get out of the way when they when they
- 30:44Speaker 3: do it. But you know, if I, if I have
- 30:46Speaker 3: to look at them, I think Dave Roberts has done
- 30:49Speaker 3: a little bit more with with less is kind of
- 30:52Speaker 3: the way I look at it. I mean, clearly, I've
- 30:54Speaker 3: been bashing on the yanking are the Dodgers the whole playoffs,
- 30:58Speaker 3: and he just keeps finding ways to get more out
- 31:00Speaker 3: of the role players, and he's playing the bullpen game. Well,
- 31:04Speaker 3: he's he's done all of those things Boone. I feel
- 31:08Speaker 3: like it's just been a little bit more of just
- 31:10Speaker 3: a straight to whack them wall approach and let the
- 31:13Speaker 3: Yankees go out there and hit do what they need
- 31:15Speaker 3: to do. And it hasn't been about the maneuvering. It
- 31:17Speaker 3: hasn't been about trying to get the most of the team.
- 31:20Speaker 3: And so I look at it from maybe a strategic perspective.
- 31:23Speaker 3: I think Roberts might be able to maneuver Boone to
- 31:27Speaker 3: a degree. And I also like that Roberts tends to
- 31:30Speaker 3: be a little more even keeled than Boone, who can
- 31:32Speaker 3: be a little bit of hot head. And I think
- 31:37Speaker 3: in the World Series, like you know, the hot head
- 31:39Speaker 3: personality is not needed. I don't think that that's you know,
- 31:41Speaker 3: going to motivate the team, like you're already there, Like
- 31:44Speaker 3: what other motivations you need? I don't think that that's
- 31:46Speaker 3: necessarily what's going to drive anybody to their ultimate best potential.
- 31:50Speaker 3: So if I have to pick Dave Roberts, but I
- 31:54Speaker 3: don't know that I really see either manager being a
- 31:56Speaker 3: X factor, a Y factor, or any factor ultimately for
- 32:00Speaker 3: that matter. I think that there along for the ride,
- 32:02Speaker 3: they set the lineup and hope for the best.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and the number supports you on Aaron Boone being
- 32:08Speaker 1: a hot head. He has thirty nine ejections in one
- 32:11Speaker 1: thirty two career regular season games. Dave Roberts only has
- 32:15Speaker 1: twelve in thirteen hundred and fifty eight. So that's a
- 32:22Speaker 1: pretty significant ratio there for Aaron Boone. I'll just partly
- 32:27Speaker 1: for to be a foil and a little bit of
- 32:30Speaker 1: like I think I do give Aaron Boone a little
- 32:32Speaker 1: bit of the edge here because there is I think
- 32:36Speaker 1: that fieriness works within the Yankee system that like sometimes
- 32:41Speaker 1: especially like Aaron Judge as he's kind of started molding
- 32:44Speaker 1: into like this Derek jeter Land media personality, like where
- 32:50Speaker 1: he just says like all those captain things about winning
- 32:53Speaker 1: and just like has the boiler kind of corporate Yankees
- 32:59Speaker 1: worded of everything that he says to the media, Boone
- 33:02Speaker 1: mixes it up a little bit and it kind of
- 33:04Speaker 1: stirs the pot. I think can actually motivate his team
- 33:08Speaker 1: a little bit more than Dave Roberts can, because, like
- 33:11Speaker 1: you know, if they are down and just.
- 33:14Speaker 2: The mood of the overall.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Dugout is not in a good spot, Boone can actually
- 33:21Speaker 1: motivate them and maybe like a little bit of like
- 33:24Speaker 1: I think of like the Jason Hayward, you know, myth
- 33:27Speaker 1: with I guess it's not a myth, it's like truth,
- 33:30Speaker 1: but it is built into a legend in terms of
- 33:32Speaker 1: what he did to motivate the twenty sixteen Cubs during
- 33:35Speaker 1: that rain delay in Game seven where he just kind
- 33:38Speaker 1: of took the team together and fired them all up.
- 33:41Speaker 1: That you're looking for that kind of personality, I think
- 33:43Speaker 1: more so have a manager, and I think Boone can
- 33:46Speaker 1: do that for me. Would be cool if he also
- 33:48Speaker 1: got ejected the World Series.
- 33:49Speaker 2: I don't think he's going to go.
- 33:50Speaker 1: That far, but he does love to like also just
- 33:53Speaker 1: pick in prod at the umps that I think it
- 33:55Speaker 1: works that the Yankees get just slightly more calls. It
- 33:59Speaker 1: feels like because of that that, like, if you've got
- 34:02Speaker 1: Boone chirpin' atch you constantly you're gonna take that into
- 34:06Speaker 1: consideration as an ump, even if you're trying not to,
- 34:09Speaker 1: just because I mean, we're all human at the end
- 34:11Speaker 1: of the day.
- 34:11Speaker 2: So I'm gonna lean Aaron Boone here.
- 34:14Speaker 3: All right, Well, I'm glad that we're not fully agreeing
- 34:17Speaker 3: on anything. We'll see how were we enough of the
- 34:19Speaker 3: total decision here? But I'll give you that one. It's
- 34:24Speaker 3: you make a good argument, yes, thank you.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Well, you mentioned your X factor a little bit earlier
- 34:31Speaker 1: in terms of that starting rotation matchup between Cole and Yamamoto.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Was there maybe another X factor or a kind of
- 34:39Speaker 1: you know, random thing that might apply here that you know,
- 34:43Speaker 1: could give one team an edge or the other.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think you go back to that
- 34:47Speaker 3: role player discussion with specifically the Dodgers, and it's just
- 34:53Speaker 3: a matter of who's up next, is kind of the
- 34:55Speaker 3: way I'm looking at with the Dodgers, you know, is
- 34:57Speaker 3: it gonna be? You know, this does feel like it's
- 34:59Speaker 3: gonna one of those like a Keky Hernandez or a
- 35:03Speaker 3: Chris Taylor or Max Munsey, like the old old Dodgers
- 35:09Speaker 3: guys are gonna come through and and just go crazy.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I wouldn't be shocked to see, like I said, Max
- 35:15Speaker 3: Munsey taking advantage of that short porch there in Yankee
- 35:18Speaker 3: Stadium and all of a sudden, just you know, hitting
- 35:21Speaker 3: four homers in the series and riding off to an MVP.
- 35:24Speaker 3: I like I said, I do think the X factors
- 35:26Speaker 3: is gonna be the starting pitcher of the Number ones.
- 35:28Speaker 3: I think that's where the series is gonna be made.
- 35:30Speaker 3: But if I would pick a secondary X factor, I'm
- 35:35Speaker 3: gonna say it's Max Munsey is gonna be my my,
- 35:39Speaker 3: my ex factor there. It's just because it just seems
- 35:41Speaker 3: like he's that guy. He's that guy that just shows
- 35:43Speaker 3: up in the weird, big spots and then does big things.
- 35:47Speaker 3: And that ballpark in New York, it's gonna mix. Max
- 35:51Speaker 3: Months is gonna like.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so yeah, that's a good point with
- 35:55Speaker 1: that short porch. So I think one fact sure I've
- 36:00Speaker 1: got to bring up is the Will Smith factor. So
- 36:03Speaker 1: Will Smith has won a World Series each of the
- 36:06Speaker 1: last three years.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Uh A, Will Smith. I guess I should say.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I was just saying, like, yeah, I butchered that joke
- 36:15Speaker 1: a little bit, but uh, but that the one that's
- 36:18Speaker 1: won the past three World Series has been the reliever,
- 36:21Speaker 1: Will Smith.
- 36:22Speaker 2: We could keep that street going here.
- 36:24Speaker 1: If Will Smith, the catcher for the Dodgers, wins the
- 36:26Speaker 1: World Series, that we have four straight years of a
- 36:28Speaker 1: Will Smith winning the World Series. So you can't underestimate
- 36:32Speaker 1: that kind of voodoo magic, especially with Tommy ed Been
- 36:35Speaker 1: being introduced to this series as well. But obviously that's
- 36:38Speaker 1: already countered by Luke Weaver. So the double magic cancels
- 36:43Speaker 1: out there.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Wh there's there's a Jack Flaherty Tommy Edmond versus loop,
- 36:47Speaker 3: you might have double voodoo magic there for the Dodgers.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and if there is, there's rumblings of Joe Kelly
- 36:55Speaker 1: maybe making this roster. If that happens too, I'm glad
- 37:02Speaker 1: we're on the same page there. I think the other
- 37:05Speaker 1: one is I mean it was in consideration a little
- 37:08Speaker 1: bit when I was picking that lineup. I didn't go
- 37:10Speaker 1: into detailing too much, but I think the defense for
- 37:13Speaker 1: the Dodgers is a tick better just around the horn.
- 37:17Speaker 1: And when you can bring Kevin Kiermarer off the bench
- 37:20Speaker 1: to play center field for you in big moments. I
- 37:23Speaker 1: think that's gonna be a huge momentum shifter. So I
- 37:26Speaker 1: think that could be an ex factor here too, that
- 37:29Speaker 1: the Dodgers have that slight edge I think on the
- 37:32Speaker 1: defensive end too. So we've gotten to the end of
- 37:35Speaker 1: the preview here, what's your pick for who's gonna win
- 37:39Speaker 1: this series and how many games?
- 37:41Speaker 3: Well, I wouldn't be consistent if I wasn't continuing down
- 37:45Speaker 3: the path, and so I will be right at some
- 37:47Speaker 3: point of this playoff series, and I'm going to take
- 37:51Speaker 3: the Yankees. I'm gonna take the Yankees in seven. I'm
- 37:55Speaker 3: going Garrett Cole as your MVP for the World Series.
- 37:59Speaker 3: I think he is going to be the story of
- 38:00Speaker 3: the World Series. He's gonna do some damage. He's gonna
- 38:04Speaker 3: get three starts in and he's gonna go deep in
- 38:05Speaker 3: each one of them. So I'm going with the Yankees
- 38:07Speaker 3: here and on the on the coattails of the back
- 38:11Speaker 3: of Garrett Cole. Tell me I'm wrong, Tell me I
- 38:14Speaker 3: should have taken the Dodgers. I am sticking to my guns.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Though, No, I mean, I think I'm gonna go Dodgers
- 38:19Speaker 1: and seven that like, I think the lineup is just
- 38:23Speaker 1: too deep and they just figure out a way to
- 38:27Speaker 1: get the pitching to work.
- 38:28Speaker 2: You know, you only need.
- 38:29Speaker 1: A one or two good starts from Yamamoto and Flaherty
- 38:33Speaker 1: in this series and then can try to piece it
- 38:35Speaker 1: together from there. That I think they're gonna also just
- 38:39Speaker 1: kind of bash their way to it in terms of
- 38:43Speaker 1: it's a crazy good lineup. And I mean, I just
- 38:47Speaker 1: can't discount show Heyo Tani and playing in his worth
- 38:50Speaker 1: first world series.
- 38:51Speaker 2: So I'm going Dodgers in seven.
- 38:54Speaker 3: All right, Well, at least we agreed on something. It's
- 38:56Speaker 3: gonna be seven games.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I hope, so, I hope it's a
- 39:00Speaker 1: It's been a great playoffs, and I hope that this
- 39:02Speaker 1: is really the capstone for it all. So, yeah, we're
- 39:05Speaker 1: going to take a short break, but then we will
- 39:07Speaker 1: return to talk about one of the newest TOPS releases
- 39:11Speaker 1: that's coming out next week, and that is twenty twenty
- 39:13Speaker 1: four Allen and Ginter. Stick around, all right, Welcome back, everybody.
- 39:33Speaker 1: We are going to talk about the new release coming
- 39:37Speaker 1: out on October thirtieth from Tops twenty twenty four Allen
- 39:40Speaker 1: and Ginter. And so this is fun because it's one
- 39:45Speaker 1: of the first series overviews that we did when we've
- 39:49Speaker 1: launched this podcast last year that if you go all
- 39:51Speaker 1: the way back to episode eleven, that was our recap
- 39:54Speaker 1: of the twenty twenty three set release. And so that's
- 39:58Speaker 1: a good spot to also get a a little more
- 40:00Speaker 1: background on Alan and Ginter overall. But we'll dive into
- 40:03Speaker 1: it here a little bit. In terms of just the
- 40:06Speaker 1: eclectic nature of what Alan and Ginter is.
- 40:08Speaker 2: It's meant to.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Parking back to old tobacco cards. That was what Alan
- 40:15Speaker 1: Ginter was back in like the eight late eighteen hundreds,
- 40:19Speaker 1: that when you would go and buy the pack of cigarettes,
- 40:22Speaker 1: you would get the tobacco cards within them, and they
- 40:24Speaker 1: would have all sorts of just kind of strange pictures,
- 40:28Speaker 1: I would say, like in terms of like you know, animals, events, places, eventually,
- 40:35Speaker 1: baseball players, cowboys, like all sorts of just famous people's odds,
- 40:42Speaker 1: oddities and figures in life that like, that's what you've
- 40:46Speaker 1: got here in Alan Ginter. So not only is it
- 40:48Speaker 1: a baseball card like set, it's also got lots of
- 40:53Speaker 1: celebrities included. It's got inserts with food, with animals, with mountains,
- 41:00Speaker 1: and all sorts of just like really fun nuggets to
- 41:04Speaker 1: pull that. I think it's one of the favorites out
- 41:07Speaker 1: there for really hardcore collectors that it's a it's a
- 41:10Speaker 1: huge set.
- 41:11Speaker 2: It's also a huge checklist.
- 41:12Speaker 1: You've got a three hundred and fifty cards in the
- 41:14Speaker 1: base set. That's three hundred commons and then fifty short
- 41:18Speaker 1: prints that are tacked onto the back of that and
- 41:21Speaker 1: the inserts.
- 41:22Speaker 2: It goes for days.
- 41:23Speaker 1: So we'll get into that a little bit in terms
- 41:25Speaker 1: of what our favorite inserts and stuff are, but brew
- 41:29Speaker 1: what where is like Allen and Ginter rank for you
- 41:32Speaker 1: in terms of like sets that come out every year
- 41:34Speaker 1: and what kind of like pieces of whimsy really stand
- 41:37Speaker 1: out for you when you think of Alan and Ginter.
- 41:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's I'm gonna say it's mid tier for me.
- 41:43Speaker 3: It's it's not the flagships, it's not the ones that
- 41:45Speaker 3: you have to have, but it's but it kind of
- 41:48Speaker 3: sits there with kind of your Tops holiday in a
- 41:52Speaker 3: fun rip. We used to be in the Tops opening
- 41:54Speaker 3: day there too, but doesn't really exist anymore, and so
- 41:59Speaker 3: it fits there and kind of a fun, gimmicky rip
- 42:02Speaker 3: that even the thing I love about it, which is
- 42:05Speaker 3: kind of a similar thing I love about Top Stadium
- 42:09Speaker 3: Club is it's just really fun and interesting to rip,
- 42:13Speaker 3: even if the value doesn't stick around things like that.
- 42:15Speaker 3: And I also love the old card stock that that
- 42:19Speaker 3: these are generally come on. It's the it's not the
- 42:21Speaker 3: shiny foils, it's not things like that. It's more old school, hard,
- 42:25Speaker 3: hard card stock. So I think it's fun. And the
- 42:29Speaker 3: thing that really gets me is, I I really don't
- 42:32Speaker 3: care for almost any other set when they go outside
- 42:35Speaker 3: the sport, but for some reason, when Alan Ginter does it,
- 42:39Speaker 3: it's fine. I think it's fun. And I even like
- 42:42Speaker 3: the fact that they stretch the sport a little bit
- 42:45Speaker 3: and they get into you know, all these celebrities or
- 42:50Speaker 3: maybe coaches or things like that that there's just some
- 42:53Speaker 3: uniqueness about them. And I think it was like justin Siegel,
- 42:56Speaker 3: like the Giants Coach, where you have like a relic
- 43:00Speaker 3: in one of the sets, you know, things like that.
- 43:03Speaker 3: There's just these very interesting stories about baseball that you
- 43:07Speaker 3: can grab, and there's always these very odd grail cards
- 43:10Speaker 3: in there that you don't realize you're gonna be grail
- 43:12Speaker 3: cards until it's too late, and I think that's just
- 43:14Speaker 3: part of the beauty of the set. You just literally
- 43:17Speaker 3: have no idea what you have the whole time. So
- 43:20Speaker 3: I got a mid tier. It's a fun set to open.
- 43:22Speaker 3: It's an accessible set, So I do enjoy Allen and Ginter.
- 43:26Speaker 3: I don't know what about you. Where where does it
- 43:28Speaker 3: sit in your heart?
- 43:30Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 43:30Speaker 1: I think in kind of the same spot where it's
- 43:33Speaker 1: fun from, like more of the card collecting side than
- 43:37Speaker 1: it is like just the peer baseball nerd side that
- 43:39Speaker 1: I think I approach card collecting from a lot, so
- 43:43Speaker 1: especially like when you're ripping open Alan Gintery, Like you'll
- 43:47Speaker 1: notice on the backs, it's not your traditional back of
- 43:50Speaker 1: a baseball card where you've got just an entire litany
- 43:54Speaker 1: of stats and in terms of like you know what
- 43:57Speaker 1: they've done throughout their careers, the players, but also you
- 44:00Speaker 1: know their measurements and where they're from and a nugget
- 44:04Speaker 1: of like trivia that follows them. That it's a much
- 44:07Speaker 1: more basic back where you know, you get just like
- 44:10Speaker 1: one little line on the player and the front. The
- 44:14Speaker 1: design is always muted in terms of it's like I said,
- 44:18Speaker 1: hearkening back to those really old tobacco cards. So it's
- 44:22Speaker 1: got a much more simplified design where the border this
- 44:27Speaker 1: year is a little bit honestly like controversial, I would
- 44:30Speaker 1: say in terms of like Allen and Ginter collectors, because
- 44:33Speaker 1: the old school Allen and Ginter cards they didn't have
- 44:38Speaker 1: like a border like that. The way that it almost
- 44:41Speaker 1: feels like they're kind to shoehorn a little bit of
- 44:43Speaker 1: like reviving Gypsy Queen here into back into Allen and
- 44:48Speaker 1: Ginter with this border design that like I've seen some
- 44:51Speaker 1: people not like it. I'm not that hardcore of like
- 44:53Speaker 1: an Allen and Ginter tobacco card guy, so like it
- 44:56Speaker 1: doesn't make a huge difference to me, but you did
- 44:59Speaker 1: hit on, like when you are getting into some of
- 45:03Speaker 1: the whimsy of like the inserts and celebrities that are
- 45:06Speaker 1: included in the set. This is the set where it's
- 45:09Speaker 1: four it's Allen Ginter is designed for that. That's where
- 45:13Speaker 1: the history of the Allen and Ginter cards like comes
- 45:18Speaker 1: from Beck in the late eighteen hundreds. So that is
- 45:22Speaker 1: it feels right and it makes it really fun. So
- 45:25Speaker 1: you get all sorts of different types of cards in
- 45:28Speaker 1: terms of baseball, different sports, celebrities, so on and so forth,
- 45:32Speaker 1: but shapes, sizes, materials, it's got the most variety of
- 45:38Speaker 1: any of the sets. And it's just like it's endlessly
- 45:41Speaker 1: fun to rip. Doesn't hold a lot of great value,
- 45:43Speaker 1: but it's a fun collection sort of set, and especially
- 45:48Speaker 1: like it's an accessible set if you're looking for something
- 45:52Speaker 1: to get into for the first time, I would say
- 45:56Speaker 1: it's like a tick more expensive than Flagship, but you're
- 46:00Speaker 1: not encroaching on anything like chrome or anything like that.
- 46:03Speaker 1: And so on top of it, you should also have
- 46:06Speaker 1: retail boxes available in those blaster boxes, and you'll also
- 46:11Speaker 1: have hobby boxes that will be available in your hobby shops. Okay,
- 46:17Speaker 1: well with that, let's get into some of the checklist stuff.
- 46:20Speaker 1: So we've got the standard rookies that we kind of
- 46:24Speaker 1: went over last week with tops update that you know,
- 46:27Speaker 1: you got your pul schemes, your white Langfords or Jackson Churio's,
- 46:31Speaker 1: all sorts of the big guys are in this set
- 46:33Speaker 1: because it released so late, and any other kind of
- 46:37Speaker 1: like celebrity or fun cards from the base set that
- 46:41Speaker 1: really stand out to you before we get into the inserts,
- 46:45Speaker 1: and really like the whole side show and circus of
- 46:48Speaker 1: what Alan in Ginter is.
- 46:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so I think one of the areas I always
- 46:53Speaker 3: like to kind of focus in on are the unique
- 46:56Speaker 3: relics and the players that come into there. So we
- 47:00Speaker 3: have to jump in and name a few of those
- 47:02Speaker 3: off off the top. And I won't hit the whole
- 47:06Speaker 3: list of all the crazy names, but just to name
- 47:10Speaker 3: a few where you really there's uh Ginter, there's a
- 47:13Speaker 3: relix A checklist and relicx B checklist A is like
- 47:16Speaker 3: all the gimmicks or you know, some of the big
- 47:20Speaker 3: name UH ballplayers, whereas the B is true ballplayers. Like
- 47:25Speaker 3: it's just actually the baseball cards. And so you go
- 47:28Speaker 3: through here and you're like, Okay, we've got uh Jeff Probes,
- 47:35Speaker 3: We've got Katie Leadecki, we have let's see, you shouldn't
- 47:43Speaker 3: limb the magician Usain Bolt, like Xander Schoffley the gold
- 47:48Speaker 3: medal wasn't gold. No, he didn't get the gold. He
- 47:50Speaker 3: got a gold two Olympics to ago. And you just
- 47:55Speaker 3: got a really random group of guys out there. Dude,
- 48:01Speaker 3: Dad like why, I don't know, but why not? That's
- 48:05Speaker 3: Alan Ginter for you. So I think there's gonna be
- 48:08Speaker 3: some there's some fun ones in there. I'm not sure
- 48:10Speaker 3: who's gonna be the most collectible here. I have to
- 48:14Speaker 3: think that Katie Leadecki and Usain Bolt are gonna be
- 48:17Speaker 3: pretty pretty high on that list, is from some of
- 48:20Speaker 3: the other sports. And then I think you're gonna get
- 48:23Speaker 3: some pretty interesting Survivor fans for Jeff Props as well.
- 48:27Speaker 3: So I think those are the some of the fun
- 48:30Speaker 3: initial ones to call out. Is there anybody on that
- 48:33Speaker 3: list that I'm missing that you're really excited about? Of
- 48:36Speaker 3: why are they in this product? But why not?
- 48:38Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 48:39Speaker 1: I mean I think Jeff Probs is going to be
- 48:41Speaker 1: a really fun one that Yeah, as we're speaking, I
- 48:44Speaker 1: am a Survivor fan. I'm missing it tonight, so I've
- 48:46Speaker 1: got I always have to like delay it a day
- 48:48Speaker 1: or two because we record the podcast on Wednesdays. But
- 48:53Speaker 1: most of those guys are most of those people that
- 48:56Speaker 1: you covered there with those relics also have autos in
- 48:59Speaker 1: this checks. So Usain Bolt, I think that's gonna be
- 49:03Speaker 1: one of the major chase cards, not only for the
- 49:05Speaker 1: relic but for the auto as well, because it is
- 49:08Speaker 1: his first autographed card, like period, I'm pretty sure that.
- 49:12Speaker 2: You know it's gonna that.
- 49:14Speaker 1: The other thing too, is all these Allen and Ginter
- 49:16Speaker 1: cards are on auto, so that are on card autos
- 49:20Speaker 1: that like that really is enhancing their value and I
- 49:24Speaker 1: think just adds to the overall magic of what Alan
- 49:28Speaker 1: Ginter is that there does seem to to feel like
- 49:32Speaker 1: more connection to you know, not only the players in
- 49:35Speaker 1: this set, but the celebrities too, so you've got that.
- 49:39Speaker 1: I'm also looking at Kelsey Whitmore in the female baseball
- 49:44Speaker 1: player who's been playing an indie ball. She does have
- 49:46Speaker 1: other autos that have come out before in Panini Prism
- 49:52Speaker 1: like sets. I'm not exactly like sure what the sets were,
- 49:55Speaker 1: but I know that she's got some, but these are
- 49:58Speaker 1: her first tops based autos and she's also got a
- 50:05Speaker 1: relic in there too. You're also looking at Tim Robinson,
- 50:08Speaker 1: the comedian being there. Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are
- 50:13Speaker 1: in this set too, so you'll get lots of football crossover,
- 50:16Speaker 1: so those will be hot cards to chase. And I
- 50:20Speaker 1: think really one of the big hits here from this
- 50:24Speaker 1: set is going to be the dual auto between Mallory
- 50:27Speaker 1: and Dansby Swanson. So Mallory Swanson, hopefully you know who
- 50:31Speaker 1: she is, but she is the US women's soccer team,
- 50:36Speaker 1: you know, multi time gold medalist and also married to
- 50:40Speaker 1: Dan sby Swanson there, So that's just like that is
- 50:43Speaker 1: one of the cooler cards that I think we've seen
- 50:46Speaker 1: released over this year is that dual auto from the
- 50:49Speaker 1: Married Couple. So you dove into some of the relics
- 50:52Speaker 1: any of the other autos that are really like kind
- 50:54Speaker 1: of popping out for you, that are really like, you know,
- 50:58Speaker 1: piquing your.
- 50:58Speaker 3: Interest to well, I was getting distracted by the checklist
- 51:01Speaker 3: of the tallest mountains because I mean, why chist, why not?
- 51:09Speaker 3: And I guess that's what we have to love out Ginter.
- 51:14Speaker 3: You know, I think you hit the main ones off
- 51:17Speaker 3: the top there. I know we'll kind of get in
- 51:19Speaker 3: at some point to you know, the cut signatures. I
- 51:22Speaker 3: think that's also one of the areas that really uh
- 51:26Speaker 3: sets Ginter apart, because there are some very very significant
- 51:32Speaker 3: chases that that you're gonna have there. They also have,
- 51:35Speaker 3: which I think is one of the one of the
- 51:37Speaker 3: really kind of cool insert sets in here, is they
- 51:41Speaker 3: have the employee autographs checklists, like I like, hopefully the
- 51:46Speaker 3: guy that didn't seal the super fractors is that on here,
- 51:50Speaker 3: but if he is, that's probably like that thing's gonna
- 51:52Speaker 3: be collectibles all is all get out. So I think
- 51:57Speaker 3: you hit the main ones on here. There are going
- 52:00Speaker 3: to be a number of folks that are going after, uh,
- 52:04Speaker 3: just the the unique trying to put together that that
- 52:08Speaker 3: whole celebrity checklist of autos, and then you already get
- 52:12Speaker 3: those people, like I said, going after the cut signatures,
- 52:16Speaker 3: which are we'll we'll cover those here in a few minutes,
- 52:19Speaker 3: are absolutely the chase cards of this entire set. So
- 52:24Speaker 3: I think you hit the big the big ones outside
- 52:26Speaker 3: of you missed all the employees.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, if there's anything that you want
- 52:32Speaker 1: to like read to make you you feel humble, as
- 52:36Speaker 1: at least it humbles me in terms of like I
- 52:39Speaker 1: can feel this as I'm getting like more and more
- 52:41Speaker 1: into my late thirties, just like my disconnection from pop
- 52:44Speaker 1: culture at large, and like especially given that like I
- 52:47Speaker 1: don't do TikTok that like look at some of the
- 52:51Speaker 1: names on this checklist and you're just like, who on
- 52:54Speaker 1: earth is that? And you look it up and they're
- 52:55Speaker 1: just like internet famous or just like involved in like
- 53:00Speaker 1: the vander Pump Rules. Like there's vander Pump Rules people
- 53:02Speaker 1: in this checklist and I have no idea who they are,
- 53:05Speaker 1: but it's really, like I said, humbling to see some
- 53:09Speaker 1: of these pop culture people who are included in this
- 53:12Speaker 1: set that you know, I learned about for the first
- 53:14Speaker 1: time today as I was googling there.
- 53:16Speaker 3: I guess we did miss a big one. Yeah we
- 53:20Speaker 3: got we got to pengas r. Yes, we got to
- 53:24Speaker 3: Penga in there. So I as I rushed through, I
- 53:26Speaker 3: didn't it doesn't say to Penga, It's it's Daniel Fisher.
- 53:31Speaker 3: But I think that is a pretty big one for
- 53:33Speaker 3: those who grew up in the nineties talking about boy
- 53:38Speaker 3: Meets World. So I guess, you know, to your point,
- 53:42Speaker 3: some of the newer TikTok ones and things like that.
- 53:44Speaker 3: I'm also just I'm sitting here going I don't know,
- 53:46Speaker 3: I feel like I should, but apparently I'm old. So
- 53:50Speaker 3: we'll go back to the nineties and talk about boy
- 53:52Speaker 3: Means World.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Yes exactly, because yeah, one of those that I had
- 53:55Speaker 1: to look up was Erica Thompson the Bee Lady on
- 53:58Speaker 1: like TikTok and stuff. Which it works well because one
- 54:02Speaker 1: of the main like insert sets that they're really highlighting
- 54:07Speaker 1: this year is the Buzzin set. So this is I
- 54:11Speaker 1: think very emblematic of like what Alan and Ginter is
- 54:13Speaker 1: getting into especially like the fawn and flora of like
- 54:17Speaker 1: just the world at large. And so the buzz and
- 54:20Speaker 1: set is going to have all sorts of different types
- 54:22Speaker 1: of bees in it. But we've also got I was
- 54:25Speaker 1: looking this up on the Beckett Checklist. They called it
- 54:29Speaker 1: the Battoids Beneath inserts, which were like raised. I think
- 54:34Speaker 1: they changed it to Raise in the Wild, which is
- 54:37Speaker 1: unfortunate because the bat Toys Beneath was fantastic, great, great name.
- 54:43Speaker 1: I also learned what a battoid was, so that that
- 54:46Speaker 1: was but also like good, Like That's what I think
- 54:49Speaker 1: I like about these insert sets when they involve different animals,
- 54:55Speaker 1: different flowers, different foods, or like culture, old historical moments
- 55:01Speaker 1: or just like all sorts of like things that you
- 55:04Speaker 1: can learn from and that whenever I'm opening Alan Ginter,
- 55:08Speaker 1: not only am i brushing up on some of that
- 55:09Speaker 1: pop culture stuff, but I'm also learning like things that
- 55:13Speaker 1: are more consequential that guess, sorry, pop culture icons out.
- 55:19Speaker 3: This is the learning set for old.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Folks, yes, but also you know, being able to learn
- 55:24Speaker 1: about different types of bees and wasps and different learning
- 55:28Speaker 1: what a batoid is in different types of rays and
- 55:32Speaker 1: things like that that you know, there's whole sets on
- 55:35Speaker 1: these different types of animals that you just don't.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Even know exist.
- 55:39Speaker 1: So which of these insert sets are you really looking at?
- 55:44Speaker 1: And pop and like you're like, wow, I can see
- 55:47Speaker 1: myself maybe collecting all that set because it's just too fun.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Well, there's numerous options. I could collect all fifty stades,
- 55:58Speaker 3: I got all the tallest mountains. I'm not going to
- 56:01Speaker 3: go there. We are definitely going with the ballpark bites.
- 56:06Speaker 3: I don't think there's any reason you can't go there.
- 56:09Speaker 3: And and there's a box lar checklist. There's a mini checklist,
- 56:13Speaker 3: and this is thirty cards of ballpark food, and I
- 56:17Speaker 3: have to ask the question, which ballpark food are you
- 56:21Speaker 3: taking out of the thirty card checklist of the ballpark bites?
- 56:26Speaker 3: If you had to eat one every day here on out,
- 56:30Speaker 3: what ballpark bites are you taking?
- 56:35Speaker 2: Well?
- 56:36Speaker 1: I'm also limited by my my by my diet choices
- 56:41Speaker 1: being a vegan, so that I guess if we made
- 56:45Speaker 1: it a factor where like if everything.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Was vegan, actually I don't even know if it would change.
- 56:50Speaker 1: I think I would still maybe go with waffle fries,
- 56:52Speaker 1: just because like if you had to like eat something
- 56:56Speaker 1: every day. It's got to be more of like a side,
- 56:58Speaker 1: you know what I mean that, Yep, it would change
- 57:01Speaker 1: maybe if you made this rule where all only I
- 57:04Speaker 1: could eat like the waffle fries, but waffle fries, I
- 57:07Speaker 1: could see myself eating every day.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Pickle. I could see myself eating pickle every day, just
- 57:12Speaker 2: not pickles.
- 57:13Speaker 1: Pickle, which if you want to talk about one that
- 57:16Speaker 1: might turn into that kind of meme card that you
- 57:20Speaker 1: were alluding to, which if you go back into like
- 57:22Speaker 1: the history of Allen and Ginter, the two that really
- 57:25Speaker 1: stand out over the past ten or fifteen years, i'd
- 57:28Speaker 1: say are the egg card. There's just a card from
- 57:32Speaker 1: I think it's the twenty eleven set. I'm not one
- 57:35Speaker 1: hundred percent sure on that. I'll look that up after
- 57:37Speaker 1: I'm kind of done talking here, but I'm the egg
- 57:40Speaker 1: card is just egg that's all it is. It's like
- 57:43Speaker 1: a huge chase card. You can never find them, and
- 57:47Speaker 1: they're worth quite a bit. The other one is the
- 57:49Speaker 1: bitcoin card that, like when bitcoins started going through the roof,
- 57:54Speaker 1: also became really expensive along with that that people start collecting.
- 57:58Speaker 1: So do you think Pickle is the card that could
- 58:01Speaker 1: do that? Or is there another card that you're seeing
- 58:03Speaker 1: within all these checklists that could be the next egg
- 58:06Speaker 1: or Bitcoin.
- 58:08Speaker 3: Oh, if that's so, I think Pickle has definitely a
- 58:14Speaker 3: leg up on the competition here, right. You caught me
- 58:18Speaker 3: off guard. I didn't see this one coming. I feel
- 58:21Speaker 3: like there's got to be something in the swamp creatures.
- 58:23Speaker 1: That's good because you'll give me a plenty of time
- 58:25Speaker 1: to look up what's that the egg card was from?
- 58:28Speaker 3: Yeah? So, uh, you know, I'm I'm gonna go here
- 58:31Speaker 3: and I'm gonna go on a limit and we're gonna
- 58:33Speaker 3: pick something from the swamp creatures checklist here just for
- 58:36Speaker 3: for for grins. Here we've got all kinds of things.
- 58:39Speaker 3: We've got the mosquitos, We've got the dolphins, We've got
- 58:43Speaker 3: the little grass frogs. We've got the Florida cotton mouth,
- 58:47Speaker 3: and the Florida snapping turtle, Florida panther. Apparently there's a
- 58:50Speaker 3: lot of swamp creatures in Florida. And you know, I
- 58:56Speaker 3: think you know this is one of those where we're
- 58:58Speaker 3: gonna we're gonna have to be stuck on the Turkey vulture.
- 59:02Speaker 3: I'm gonna go with the turkey vulture is just a
- 59:06Speaker 3: gonna be a very interesting card. It's it's probably not
- 59:10Speaker 3: actually that. There's some much more interesting cards in the set,
- 59:14Speaker 3: but I gotta go oddball here and go with the
- 59:17Speaker 3: swamp creatures. So did you find the egg while.
- 59:20Speaker 1: You're it's actually it was twenty nineteen. I did, I couldn't.
- 59:24Speaker 1: I thought it was way earlier than that. But yeah,
- 59:26Speaker 1: it it's also not quite as rare as I thought.
- 59:29Speaker 1: The bitcoin one certainly is very rare. That it's uh,
- 59:34Speaker 1: let's see what the bitcoin one is trading for right now.
- 59:37Speaker 2: It's usually.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the cheapest like bitcoin card you can find is
- 59:42Speaker 1: from I mean that one's coming from Canada and it's
- 59:45Speaker 1: nine zeclar the highest rated person. But I mean it's
- 59:48Speaker 1: gonna run you about one hundred bucks for the bitcoin card.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Egg is a lot more reasonable. You can get egg
- 59:53Speaker 1: for three or five bucks.
- 59:55Speaker 3: But still the card of an egg.
- 59:58Speaker 2: I might have to put that in my car right now.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: But and it's just like it's an egg like floating
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: in front of like an outfield wall, like in left field.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: It's great, it's a it's a it's a fantastic low card.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: H If there's another set that I think could produce
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: that meme card. It's got to be from the scratch
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: and sniff Got the Itch inserts. These these I think
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: will be quite popular just because they're gonna be ridiculous
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: like and also brings up the question of like, you know,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: if you scratch it too much, like are you ruining
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: the mintness of the card? And then like does that
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: make these cards even more valuable? Kind of down the
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: stretch that like it's gonna be one of the most
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: difficult sets maybe to ever find all time, like in
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: all mint condition like ps A ten's or something like that.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: But looking at that.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Scratching sniff set of Got the Itch, which is also
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: just like what a fantastic insert name which one of those?
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Are you looking forward to scratching and sniffing the most?
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: I mean, this has got to be the easiest answer
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: there is out there. It's got to be the bacon card.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: You open a pack of cards and it just smells
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: like bacon. I mean, yeah, I get the auto leather
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: might not be too bad there, or maybe some coffee grinds,
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: like there's some good stuff there, but I definitely look
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: at that. I just just the smell of bacon. I'm
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: a pack of cards is just something else, and really,
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: like I I want to know what they how they
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: managed to create the scratch and stiff cards, Like, I've
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: got to feel like there's somewhere somebody there over at Fanatics.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: They've got the top set up there and they've got
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: the the one machine that does scratch and sniff cards. Like,
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: let's get this thing out of the back room. So
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: that you make a very good point, because how are
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: you not scratching these cards the second you get them?
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: There's not a chance in the world that I have
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: the ability to resist it's scratches of bacon.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Card no yeah, or barbecue or vanilla lime that like
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: on top of it too, Like that is a good
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: point in terms of production process. It's it's really strange
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: to pull something in like that, considering you know, they've
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: got so many other machines that do the chrome, the relics,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: all sorts of things in terms of you know, even
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: cut autos and different thicknesses and stuff that I can't
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: remember the last time we've seen a scratch and sniff card.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: So like that's kind of did they buy a new machine?
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Did did it.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Require a new investment? And then the other question I
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: have is they didn't want to go with something gross,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: like just one gross like smell, because that could have
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: been the meme card, Like they're all good smells, but
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: there's no like Harry Potter jelly Bean factor here where
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: there's something gross, which I mean, if I was producing
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: this set apps right, like you've got to have garbage
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: or rotting banana peel or something like.
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: Oh, they missed an opportunity, the garbage, the Houston garbage can.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: They miss they missed.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: The trash can.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: That man, that was short print.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Maybe it is, if not, we're producing it.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that would be my suggestion if I was
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: able to do one of the staff.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Autos, I want the Houston trash can.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Okay, well let's get into some of those other crazy
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: like cards that we have. So I would say, like
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: the one that Alan Ginter is especially known for.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: Are the DNA relics.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: And so these are actual bits of like fossilized dinosaur
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: that are included in in the relic card. And so
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: these are pretty big chases. They're they're pretty limited in
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: terms of the number of them out there, I mean,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: just because it's not necessarily they have tony fossils, so
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: those will be popular getting out there.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Have you ever seen one of them in the wild.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: I don't think I ever have.
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: I don't think I ever have. But to your point,
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: like I think they are extremely collectible. There's a certain
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: collector cross a section there between history and cards that is, well,
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: we'll just put it this way, they can afford to
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: go after these ones.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Yeah, And the other factor here is that usually we
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: get some sort of like jokier one too, Like there's
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: been like a ghost relic where it's just been like
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: a sheet that's included in there, or you know, you'll
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: see this more so in holiday too, with like the
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Santa and Elf relics. So there's necessarily not necessarily anything
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: like that right now in the checklist, but we are
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: speaking a week before release date. So usually there's nuggets
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: like that buried into Allen and Ginter.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: That release over time.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Again, like they don't like actually have anything cool in them,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: unlike these Dino relics, but like they are highly collectible
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: just because of the rarity and the short printing out there.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: So we've also got rip cards and all sorts of
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: different types of like metal stained glass cloth cards of minis.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: I guess that's something I should have explained from the
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: top two is like you've got regular sized cards of
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: all the cards on the set, and then minis as
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: well as well as like chrome cards, refractor cards.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Then they get into the.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Metals, the stained glass, the cloth, the wood, and those
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: are a lot of the time like buried in rip cards.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: And so again, have you ever like been cross paths
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: with a rip card or do you own any like
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: these strange material cards that have come from Ellen and
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Ginter over the years.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I do have. I'd say a few rip cards
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: in the collection. I will say they're already ripped and
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: when I acquire them, Yeah, And I think that's actually
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: one of the reasons I have a love hate relationship
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: with the rip cards is that if I get them,
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: I have to rip them. But it's one of those
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: that you can end up with a pretty rare rip
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: card that's, you know, out of five out of ten,
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: and it is a complete gamble what's inside that card,
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Like you would think the rare the rip card, the
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: rarer the thing you find inside. And it's not always
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: the case. It's very often that you get a common
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: rip card, a non numbered rip card, and you go
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: through it and you get a crazy, crazy hit, or
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: you rip that that really rare rip card, and it's
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: I think those ones it's kind of like the lottery.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: You can have the rip rarest of the rare inside those,
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: or you could have absolutely nothing. Here's my I wanna
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: go jazz Chism. We throw onunder the bus again. We've already
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: talked about a few times. Here's my jazz Chism basementy card.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: It's like I just ripped my stand usual out of
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: five to get there. You know. It's it definitely can
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: go multiple different ways, So I I love and hate
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: rip cards all the same.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Yeah, And I will say that the one key there
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: because the metal minis are often in those rip cards
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: as well as the stained glass, So the rip cards
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: they're a.
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: Little bit bigger.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Usually they're more like box toppers when they come into
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Allen and Ginter. And so when you get those, like
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: they've still only got like the space for the mini cards,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: so you're getting mini cards out of them. The one
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: key though, is because the metal ones are rarer that
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: they're one in every six four hundred and ninety eight
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: hobby packs. You can use a magnet to find them
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: in the rip cards I've seen like videos of it
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: on YouTube and Reddit where like people have done that
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: and you can kind of tell that whether or not
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: it's a metal one, So that can help you if
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: you do come across one of these rip cards. Otherwise, like, yeah,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: you can't like risk shaking it a lot to see
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: if it's a you know, a stained glass or or
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: a the wood ones could be there as well, because
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: you know, if it's not, then you could damage it.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: And often you know, those could also be signed or
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: one of one's and stuff like that. So you don't
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: want to necessarily like risk that. It's not like it's
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: going to be a metal or stained glass card or
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: just kind of like your common mini cards. So you've
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: got to be able to make that choice. And I'm
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: pro rip if you you're ever wondering that, Uh, if
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: you ever find one again, do not ask me whether
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: or not to rip it, because I am going to
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: tell you to rip it immediately. A magnetic Yeah, yeah, certainly.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: And then you you hinted at the cut signature checklist here,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: so that is I think another key here to the
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: overall like value of out and ginter and maybe even
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: when it sets it apart a little bit from some
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: of the Flagship is that, you know, it's not quite
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: as printed as Flagship. Flagship has cut autos in it,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: but it's very very like hard to hit one and
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: near impossible, but it's a little less impossible here with
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: ount on Ginter. And so, which cut autos really stand
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: out for you in that checklist? And I can also
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: give the caveat that usually they come from people who
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: are deceased, because that's why they need to be cutting
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: these autos and aren't having them putting it on cards.
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I have to say I think that
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: there's one that stands far and above the rest. And
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: maybe this is just me, mom, but it is the
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: first one in the checklist. There's actually two of them,
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: and it's a Mereia air Hart. I think that that
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: is probably the chase of the cut signatures. You know, again,
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: this is the Ginter, So it's somebody that's not necessarily
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: in the sport but has just such an iconic story
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: and iconic name. So I think Amelia Earhart definitely falls
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: into into that that list. You also will have a
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: little bit of the Richard Dixon chasers out there, which
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: I think is gonna be an interesting group, but then
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: you do get into some of those like great just
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: great hall of famers. There you've got your Ted Williams,
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: You've got your Ray Campanela's Lou Brocks, and your your
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: Hank Aaron's, Ernie Banks. You know Cy Young, Bob Gibson,
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: you know all the great great names of the past
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: that you're very likely never to get a autographed card
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: of in a modern product. So I think those that's
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: what really makes this one fun. But like I said,
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: if I had to pick, if I'm grabbing one, I
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: think it's Amelia Earhart just because that is gonna be
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: such a unique card and I think highly sought after
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: again with you, you you merge that history with card
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: collecting genre. So how about you? Who who who jumps
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: out to you in the cut checklist?
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: I mean I also I had my eyes on Sir
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Edmund Hillary, who you know, the first guy to I mean,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: not the first guy to ever get to the top
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: of Everest, but you know it's kind of like known
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: for that in history. That that's a pretty cool one,
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: like seeing cool Papa Bell in here as well as
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: you know you're getting it feels like they are starting
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: to integrate more and more Negro Leagues players into some
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: of these you know, checklists, and so this is I
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: think a pretty that'll be an important card to chase
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: as well as you know, you got Negro leaguers and
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: Larry Dobie, Monti, Irvin others that have come through baseball
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: history that just kind of like really stand out and
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: are going to go down in terms of like just
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: being I think important to the hobby overall going forward,
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: because like there just aren't very many cards of those
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: Negro League's players that have been out there. So when
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: you're starting to get cards like this with the cut signatures,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: they just really stand out. And I think people are
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: gonna start, you know, wanting to build out collections of
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: these guys, especially given as we you know, bring more
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: and more of those stats into just our overall knowledge
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: and kind of like front of mind when we're referencing
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: some of the like year to year once once in
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: a season sort of things that happened, like we always
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: forget that we've got to start factoring in those Negro
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: League's players.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: So that one, I think really stands out to me.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: But yeah, it's gonna be I think a great checklist
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: of just these cut autos that it is deep, So
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: certainly check it out and keep your eyes peeled if
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: you're looking for these. There are one of ones, so
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: not gonna be cheap by any means.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think this is, you know, just the
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: way we've talked about Ginter and as we kind of
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: wrap up here, it this is I think what is
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: attracted about Ginter is there's a little something for everybody
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: in here, and there's just so much variety. That's what
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: makes it fun. To to your point, it is much
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: more of a collector's you know card, It's not it's
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: not about the value. It's you know, yeah, the cut
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: signatures are credibly valuable. There's some cool ripped cards things
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: like that, but it's just about all the variety of
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: that's in there, and there's something for everybody. So I
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: think it is really is a cool set. I think
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: they do a good job with it, and it's it's
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: it's gonna be tempting to pass these ones up when
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: I see them on shelves.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Yes, it's uh, honestly, it's one of the sets.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Whenever I do see any of it on shelves, I
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: usually do get it because, like it is always going
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: to be worth the fun of ripping it, just for
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: some of the inserts that we've talked about and seeing
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: some of the pop culture cards that like. It always
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: delivers from that perspective that I've never ripped a blaster
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: of Allen and Ginter and felt like I didn't get
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: my entertainment dollars worth from that blaster, as opposed to
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: that happens a lot with Base Flagship and Chrome and
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Bowman and stuff like that, where it can be much
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: more disappointing that at least you're always going to have
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: fun with Alan and Kinter.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Yeah, very very true.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Okay, well let's wrap it up there. Let's and I'm
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: actually looking I should have done a little more research
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: on the Top's rip site. I think it is still
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: going to be called Battoids of battoids beneath. I'm looking
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: at one right now on tops ripped that the Butterfly Ray.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: So I'm back on board with that set. That's gonna
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: be a good set. That's gonna be a fun one,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: especially if you're a Tampa Bay Race fan. Anyways, let's
