Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone's critics.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: The movie rated below 40% of rocket tomatoes.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: It tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Janet Code.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I guess today Dennis comedian and a writer whose work you can find in the New Yorker and the Atlantic.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Ginny Hogan.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to be here.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being on.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: How we we were talking a little bit before this, but how are you doing at the moment?
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: I'm doing okay.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: I'm in Los Angeles.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, you know, we're very COVID-infested, but I'm uh I'm I'm alright, just in my apartment, isolated.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: About the same.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: How about you?
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: How are you doing?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just getting on with things, just trying to do what I can at the moment.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Which is why this like this came out of like being stuck in my flat.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And I was like, what what can I do while I'm there?
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Watching a lot of low-rated movies.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: No, it was more like um I wanted to I I wanted to make some kind of like something funny and f and enjoyable.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: And I don't know.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: That there were a lot of low-rated movies I was talking about with people that were kind of like, oh well, they're not bad.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: They're fine.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't even really trust Rotten Tomatoes, to be honest.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: I go entirely based off the trailer.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: If the trailer's good, oh really?
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm like one of the few.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, I watch a lot of really bad movies, but so what wait, do you what do you consider bad movies then?
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Um I guess like if I'm bored, I think it's bad.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Like I have a real thing with entertainment where I don't like the idea of like a guilty pleasure or something.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Like I find it's like if I am it's like entertainment is supposed to entertain.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: So if I'm entertained, it's good.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: And it doesn't like I don't like like I feel like sometimes I've like force myself to watch stuff I think is boring because it's like high brow or something, and I'm just gonna like get something out of it, and that I don't like at all.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Like I just want to watch something that you know turns my brain off and that I can just watch a ton of.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: That's kind of my that's my theory of entertainment.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Have you watched anything good lately then?
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Well, I've been watching I May Destroy You like everybody else, and it is incredible.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Uh the people are correct.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Um I have been watching Mad Men.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Um for the first time.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Sorry?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: For the first time or re-watch.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh for the first time, like all the way through.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: I had like six episodes here and there.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: It's very good, and it is kind of better if you watch it continuously.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Um, and then this is so strange, but I started rewatching the Harry Potter movies, but I truly watched about 20 minutes like twice a week.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: So I'm very slowly.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: It's gonna take you a long time.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I feel like I started re-watching Harry Potter like three months ago, and I'm now on the sixth movie.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: But it feels like a part of my life, you know, like I would consider myself in the midst of re-watching Harry Potter.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:02unknown: Yeah.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: But you did you must have grown up with them as well.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: I think I fully grew up with them.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: I was like an early adopter.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Like I started reading them before they were cool, and I was and you of course you're in you're British, so yeah, and it was like such a big thing here at the time.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Like when the even the books when they first came out, they were so big here.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, totally.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Were the first two books really big there when they came out?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I remember well, I remember the second book being huge, and I think I started around then.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: When that came out, I think I went and started the first one then.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: But I was, I don't know, nine, ten years old.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I don't know how old it was.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Young.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I started I started with the second book, or when the second book came out, that's when my dad got them for me.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: And I I feel like in the States we didn't have full-blown Harry Potter Mania until like the fourth book.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Which makes sense even further ahead.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Were you obsessed as a child?
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I wasn't I wouldn't say I was obsessed, but I was into them, but like, and I I don't know, I remember around the fourth or fifth one getting the book at like whatever midnight book sale it was or whatever.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: But the I don't remember being like, oh, I need to do I need to read this immediately, I need to get this.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: So I don't know why I got it at that time.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, I would go to the midnight book sales and then stay up all night reading, and those were the only all-nighters I pulled like as a child.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: I do remember reading the last one the day it came out and just like read just reading the whole way through it because I wanted to not be spoiled.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and with the internet at that point, like it could be.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: My brother did the most obnoxious thing when the sixth book came out.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: He like skipped ahead to the ending and then he wrote Dumbledore Eyes on a white t-shirt.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Like I know, I was like So mean.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: So mean Yeah.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Um, no, I but I don't think you could have something like that today in the age of spoilers, though.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: It's like No, I don't know how they would deal with that now.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: It'd be impossible to avoid now.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't I don't even know.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Like, there's no we don't really have that phenomenon now of of like books and I don't know a series of books.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: It's like the stuff people's waiting is waiting on is like television, and you can watch that immediately.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Like I guess have you been watching I May Destroy You Early, or have you been watching it as it's been airing in America?
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Because I know it's fin it's like it finished a while ago here.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: I'm actually behind.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: I've only watched like eight episodes.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Is that how um I don't know, but I am behind.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: I need to catch up.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like I think the show's incredible, but it's still it's like a lot for me to watch, even like one episode.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Like I can't watch two at once, it's like a lot.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I I was watching them as they were airing, but they were still a lot.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: It's two, it's two a week and it was just yeah, a lot.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't know they were a week.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it is, yeah, it's a it's a heavy show.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: What else are you watching right now?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know what I'm watching right now.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I I don't think I'm watching anything I can't even think at the moment.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Like uh Yeah.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I'm probably just re-watching stuff just randomly.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know, nothing really s that entertaining that is sticking in my mind.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: But I need to I would I want to watch uh Mad Men again because that's a I love that show.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And I've only seen it once the whole way through.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I loved it.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it's really good.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And I may destroy you was that was probably the last thing I I watched fully uh recently.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: I thought that was amazing.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I thought it was so good.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's really amazing.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, did you re-watch Heart Rod recently?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I watched it today.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, you watched it today?
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: What time is it in London?
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's late.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: It's uh 10 15 at night.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, I see.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Wow, okay, okay.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Google.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Did you watch it recently?
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: I watched it on Saturday, and I will I'll make a confession.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I decided to say this.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: It was actually my first time watching it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: When I picked it out, I hadn't yet watched it.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: But I went to go see Palm Springs with my boyfriend like a month ago, and yeah, he didn't know anything about Palm Springs, but he was like, I'll see anything with Andy Snapper in it.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Hot Rod is the funniest movie I've ever seen.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: And I hadn't even heard of Hot Rod.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: So then I saw the list.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I saw it on the list and I was like, well, if he thinks it's the funniest movie ever and it's low-rated, maybe it's underrated.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't think it's the funniest movie.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: I'll I don't know if you want to jump into it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: We can jump into it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: It's it's underrated for sure.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: It's very funny.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Um so you enjoyed it still.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: I for sure enjoyed it, but it's like like the stuff that I laughed the hardest at was like Andy Sandberg like rolling down a hill.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Or like when he comes off the motorcycle.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: But I think that's the stuff that people that the critics at least hated.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: When I'm reading, when I'm looking at loads of reviews, they do not enjoy any of that like slapstick stuff.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: It's so slapstick, but they do it really well.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: But it's also like the one thing that really surprised me when I going back on this rewatch today, I didn't realize it wasn't directed by any of them.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Right, isn't it directed by the third lone?
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: No, sorry, it's directed by them.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: It wasn't written by them.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I mean it wasn't written by any of them, but it's seemed it's so their style of humor.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: It's so Andy Sandford.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, I tweeted this, but and so I'm sorry for reusing and tweet, but every Andy Sanford movie looks like it's gonna be so dumb and then like ends up being funny.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Like he just like I don't think well actually Palm Springs kind of had a good premise, but other than that, like if I had seen a trailer for Hot Rat, I would have been like, what is this movie?
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Like it's just Andy Sanford falling, but it's very funny.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: But do you like have you seen Pop Star?
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's another example where you just think it's gonna be so dumb and it's incredible.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: The like the musical comedy.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, those guys are really good at musical comedy, that's like their thing, but um yeah, I I think about I'm so humble a lot and also um the one that's like I'm gonna fuck you like we fuck Bin Laden.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: That's such a good song.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: It's like the the thing is they're enjoyable songs as well, they're not even like bad songs.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: When I I studied abroad in Budapest in it must have been like 2012, and they used to play at the clubs they used to play, I just had sex as a regular song.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: And it is a good song.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: That song is very funny.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's also like one that everyone's gonna know what people are saying.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's it's one that will translate over as well.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: It's not even one that could be like mistranslated.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: No, you can't pretend it's like a language thing.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that song is good.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's not really good.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Were they all really into it then?
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: They were really into it.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think that they also just like thought that that had song had good lyrics and stuff.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: But it's good, like it's like, yeah, it's it's funny and easy to listen to.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Are you an Andy Andy Sandberg fan overall?
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm a huge Andy Sandberg fan.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: I'm a huge Loting Island fan, so like I feel like anything they do, I'm always on board.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: I I love Brooklyn 99, I love all their albums.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm I'm a huge hot rod fan as well, but Popstar is like the peak to me, but I'm a huge hot rod fan as well.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: So when you picked it, sorry, yeah.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, is Brooklyn 99 like on the ads now that people hate the police?
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I think people are leaning towards that now.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Like they're like, oh well, can we defend this?
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And also like all this stuff with Terry Cruz as well, is like not helping.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: There's other people saying, Oh, if we just kind of imagine it not as a cop show.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: That's what people are saying.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: But I it's a great show still.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: I only ever watched a few episodes and I always thought it was very funny.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Obviously, Chelsea Paretti is incredible, Andy Sandberg's really funny.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Chelsea Paretti is incredible, she's not in it anymore though.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: I must have seen it when she was in it.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Uh she left uh maybe a year and a half ago, something around that.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Right when it went to NBC, she left.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, I see.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't know too much about the show, but uh okay.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that was very, very good.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Huge hands.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, so this this one it came out the the interesting thing about Halt Ride, it came out they filmed it the summer uh after the first season that they were on uh Saturday Night Live.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: It was like literally the f so it was literally like Andy Sandberg and Bill Hayder and Yorma and Akiva, they were all like on the or like within the show for the first year, took the summer break and went and made this.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Oh well, okay.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Wait, they were I didn't know all of Lonely Island was on SNL, I only thought it was Andy Sandberg.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Andy Sandberg was on it, the other two were writers on it and directing.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, I see.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, is that how they were the ones making all the digital shores?
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, cool.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Is that how they met each other?
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So the three of them were a team, but um, and they all I believe they all auditioned at the same time, and Andy Sandberg was the one that got it.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: They were like a sketch team.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: I wonder if that made them better.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: I guess not, because they're still doing stuff together.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Andy Sandberg is kind of the hot one, so I feel like that's like would make sense why he is the one who gets on television.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I think Akiva only wants to direct and write stuff, so yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, that makes I don't even think I I know what he looks like.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: He's in he's in some stuff.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Jordan I'm I see and stuff, but like Yeah.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Akiva does like small roles and things.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: He's in Pop Star.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: He's like one of the three in Pop Star.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: That's but he's the one that like kind of leaves early on and then does stay with them.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I'd have to like Google him just to know what he looked like, but um I mean they're they're really funny.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I guess they like they they knew they wanted to make something, and they're just like, oh, let's just go make a stupid comedy that fits with our style, and this was that.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, so like how like I I was gonna ask you what's your history with it and what's your first watch and everything, but I guess it's all like it was this Saturday, and so what what did you know about it going in though?
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Well, I knew it was Andy Sandberg, and I knew that it was I kind of had a sense of what style of a movie it was.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: I knew it was like one of those Lauren Michaels summer movies, basically.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Like, did you see like Staten Island Summer?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Which is like sorry, did I see what?
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Like Staten Island Summer, which is like the same premise as King of Staten Island, just like earlier.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: That movie's really bad, but I thought it would be like that, where it's like a bunch of people from SNL like fucking around and like they're all kind of funny actors, so the movie would come out funny, yeah.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: And that's sort of what happened, honestly.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't I can't like think of any one line as being like brilliant, but like, yeah, anything Bill Hater does will make me laugh.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I thought Will Arnett was really, really funny, and I really love the scene where he's going like, babe, wait.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: It's so funny.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: It's so good.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: That felt like a really good parody of like a um like a scene in a rom-com.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: And I also like an 80s rom-com scene, isn't it?
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: But then he's like melting.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Um and I thought I also the other scene I really love is the um like the inspirational march, where then they all start looting.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: That's I feel like that's that's a bit that would make people like, what is this?
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: What's going on right now?
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: We'll just start marching.
- 14:05unknown: Yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: What's your what's your style of humor?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Like, what's your taste in in comedy then?
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: In general, or do you have a specific taste?
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: A specific taste.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Um, I definitely do.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, the stuff I love, like one of my I guess some of the shows I think is like the funniest of all time is inside Amy Schumer.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: I love like that sort of like satire of uh, you know, I don't know, I just I think her humor's really funny.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Um I really I do like slapstick.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Like I feel like so the stuff I write is like I write like satire for like and it's supposed to be kind like that I guess the stuff I've written thus far is like supposed to be sort of like on the more intellectual side.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Like I like one of the main things I do is write for the New Yorker.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: And while I do love that stuff, it's definitely not my favorite stuff to consume.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Like I I really like like a slapstick, like sex heavy comedy.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Um like any kind of awkward sex scene I'm I'm really into that kind of thing.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I don't know.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: I loved uh I I used to love, like I think growing up my favorite thing was like Ben Stiller movies.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Like I love Zoolander so much.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Any of the stuff with Owen Wilson, like dodgeball, like those movies I rewatch like again and again and again.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Um that's interesting because that yeah, I'd like I I kind of find the same thing where my style, like what I make is not the same style as what I consume.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Um necessarily.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I I would say like anything along the lines of the this this sort of movie.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: I I like the sort of like um this and wet hot American Summer where they're just like slightly off and they don't entirely make sense a lot of the time.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: And there's just like some weird things thrown in.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, it's hard to explain it because they they also like I f I feel like uh the films I like are individual in their own way as well.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: They don't have a specific style to match um other comedies as well.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I feel like they they make their own individual things.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: That makes sense, yeah.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Like you don't, yeah, they don't fall under one umbrella.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: What would you say is like your favourite movie?
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Of any movie?
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Um I like um Do the Right Thing, which is just completely different to this.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: I've never even heard of it, but I love that.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: It's it's a uh it's a very serious like um film about like uh say on like the hottest day of summer in Brooklyn and uh there's like rioting and uh race riots and stuff like that that are going on.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: It's just it's a very well-made film.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: And then uh I should watch it, it sounds very topical.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's it definitely holds up still, and it was made in 89.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And so it's quite yeah.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Um and then also like Groundhog Day.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Um incredible.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Well, did you see Palm Springs?
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I really enjoyed Palm Springs.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: I enjoyed it too.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: It's not as good as Groundhog Day, but it's similar, like the premise.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: I didn't think I was gonna enjoy it as much because of the fact that it was a similar plot.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Knowing the plot going into because I saw the trailer before going into it, which I wish I hadn't.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: I wish I just watched it straight.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Um because I wish they hadn't spoiled it in the trailer, the whole uh twist of it.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, that that was kind of um but I I I thought they took it in a like a nicer direction as well, which I enjoyed.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: And I think the the two leads were really good in it as well.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I love that actress.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: Um I mean I guess she's in a lot of stuff now.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, no, I thought yeah, that was okay.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: I saw her in person once and she was so tiny.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Tiny, tiny.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I feel like she pla like in How I Met Your Mother, like I feel like all those actors are tiny and she is still like very small.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: Is she like 4'11?
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: She looks yeah, she looks maybe five foot.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Um, you know what's so funny is I'm re-watching Harry Potter now, and they for sure like try to make Daniel Radcliffe look taller, but like they're not consistent about it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Like he's 5'4 or something, isn't he?
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: He's very, very short, and they obviously didn't know that when they were gonna cast him.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: And I I kind of think they should have just gone with it and been like it doesn't matter.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: Short men can still save the wizard community.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: But there are scenes where he like there are literally scenes where he's shorter than Emma Watson and then scenes where he's taller than her, and it's like just you being inconsistent about like whatever.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Are you more into the actually I want to know if you're more into the movies or the books of Harry Potter?
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: The books like by a million because the movies I actually don't even think are that good.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: I I can see how they're well made, but like by the like the first few movies I think are good.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: The later ones, those books are just so long that the movies feel rushed.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Like movies like four through six, I feel like are kind of rushed.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: The other thing is like a lot of them aren't that good at acting.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: Emma Watson's good at acting, Rupert Grant is like bad at acting.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: And James is like okay, like he does fine, but yeah, there are scenes where his acting is it holds the scene back, and like the teachers are all good, but those are those people are adult actors.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: It's like they're all professionals going into it.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: It's like they cast a bunch of kids and like kind of hope for the best, but uh I do think the acting is is not good in general.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: The kids Yeah, I kind of agree with that.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: I thought that like the kids they cast when they were older are good, like Luna Love Good, she's pretty good.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Um but uh yeah, no, I thought the action was generally pretty bad.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: And the books I just think are like the like amazing storytelling.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: I I haven't gone back and read them in a long time, but yeah, they would they were great.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: It's too bad JK Rowling keeps like cancelling herself.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: I it's another thing of like I can't go back to them now.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: I'm like, now I've you know I wanted to read these to my kids someday, and you're just gonna but um yeah.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Shall we talk about should we go through this movie then?
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so let's talk let's go through the plot of it then.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: It's just like he's a wannabe stuntman stuntman, and he like um in the vein of like evil can evil, he like kind of takes after him, but he's very bad at it.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: And um he finds out that his stepdad is who he hates also is very sick and needs a heart transplant, and so and so he says, I'm gonna I'm gonna uh save up the money, I'm gonna make the money for you by doing all this these uh this stunt, and then um by doing that I can beat you and beat you to death because they have fights all the time.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: And then that what that's the only way I can earn you respect.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: And that's the plot, that's the basic plot of the movie.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: There's no Yeah, I thought the motivation was incredible.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Like the fact that he's being like, I need to save my stepdad so I can kick his ass.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: I thought that was amazing.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: But it's great, it's just like the whole rivalry between them is so funny, I think.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: It's Ian it's the dad stepdad is Ian McShane as well, who is just this very, very good actor and plays it with such and plays the role with such intensity as well that it that it really works.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: And the mom is Carrie.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's City SpaceX, who is another great actress.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: Like she's so good in everything as well, and she just plays it very well.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Sorry?
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know how they got her to be in that movie.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: She probably just wanted some light movie, like an easy paycheck, isn't it?
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: Like Yeah.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: I'd like it's going from Carrie to that is very different.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Like I know she's done a lot between that, but she's most well known for.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Carrie, so yeah, yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, it was an incredible movie.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it opens with um he's putting on his outfit, which is just you see someone putting on their outfit, and it's just the jumpsuit, then he puts on a cape that has his rod on it, and then he puts on a fake moustache, which is because he can't grow one.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's so funny.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: And he get like it opens and he like gets on the ramp, he goes to go on the ramp over the truck on his little bike, and immediately crashes, throws up everywhere.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: And you like you're like, oh, he's actually terrible at this.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: You immediately get the impression of what he's like.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: He's just he's not a good stump man.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they do set it up really uh efficiently, yeah.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: And then it goes to he opens with like a cuts to like a credits sequence of him doing a montage of terrible tricks, um, and you find out he's gonna jump in, then you find out he's gonna jump in, uh jump over the pool, the local pool, and and then you meet all of his like family you meet his family and friends who are just like just as if not more so dumb than him, just completely just the weirdest characters.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Like Bill Hayter is so weird in this Bill Hader is so weird, yeah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: And if you think about it, like this is probably both of their like I would say it's their first movie, probably.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Right, they play it so well.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: They yeah.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: It felt like it was written for Bill Hader.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: That part is just so weird, but I think Bill Hader is such a good actor that he gives off that vibe, kind of like once he takes a role, it feels like his, you know.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, yeah.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: He like he really inhabits a role.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Um he's like it's also it's very similar to the role he does in um in Popstar, actually.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Like I know he's like a roadie kind of like guitar guy um in Popstar, but it's very similar in personality as well.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: So I don't know if they just want to like take that, bring it to the next film.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I haven't seen Popstar in years, but I I should rewatch it.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: It's I'd say it's like much better than this, but I still really enjoy this.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: I remember going into Popstar thinking it was gonna be bad, and then it was very worse.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Which kind of just the same with Hot Rod, even though I thought it would be kind of good, but like dumb.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: And it is dumb, but like funny.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Wait, you were saying your boyfriend told you, uh, was telling you about this then.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Like he was he saying how it's the best movie you need to see, like it's the funniest movie you need to see it, and he's his favorite comedy.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: He yeah, he was like, I think Hot Rod is the funniest movie of all time, which as I was watching it and I was like, is this the sense of humor?
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Um I maybe he I think he was kind of exaggerating, but it is like, yeah, it is very funny.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: I had like a heart, like it was like impossible not to laugh at just like the scene where Andy Sandberg's rolling down the hill and like he just keeps rolling.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: And like the joke is that you're just you think he's gonna be done rolling, but he keeps like and that's the whole joke.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: It feels like the same footage is playing over and over again.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, truly the funniest parts for me were just like him getting like physically destroyed, like which happens a lot.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of that in Yeah.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: I also um is it is this the right time in the podcast to just go into specific things I thought were funny, or do we need to set aside?
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, go for it.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: We can talk about specific things.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: There's um uh he like at one point he's like about to give up on his dreams, like he because he learns that his I don't know if this is too much of a spoiler.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: He he had always had this, I don't well, I'm not gonna ruin it, but he had this motivation for why he was gonna be a stunt man, and then he learns that that's based on something false.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: So he's about to give up on his dreams.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: And um Isla Fisher, uh, who's like the girl he has a crush on, is like trying to convince him to keep to stick with his dreams, and he he just keeps saying like I used to be legit, and then he like does hand gestures like when he does these like ridiculous hand gestures, makes the letter L and then like the the number two and then like a U.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: And then he filmed it from like behind him, so you just like see his hands filling out these letters.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: It's so stupid, but so funny.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's interesting.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: So you don't know that's a real thing that came from MC Hammer?
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: No, but I think oh no, like doing hand gestures for it, uh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: But like He had a song called Too Legit to Quit and he was doing those like But that's illegitimate Is the U from that too?
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: He was definitely doing the 2L Oh I thought that I I have seen the 2L, but the the like the I'm the U.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe it is ridiculous though.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: It's very dumb and I love it.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: It's one of the funniest parts of the movie, definitely.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Just like the angle they film it is so funny.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I don't yeah, yeah.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Um there's a lot just like random things in it that make no sense.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Like um even in this it like to bring it back to the beginning of the movie, they they um there's a scene there is a scene where he's like eating jelly beans and he's got his eyes blindfolded and he's like guessing every flavor and it has no purpose to anything in the movie, and it's just and it's just there, and then they like and then they s and then uh uh what's his name finds fireworks Rico.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Um what is his name?
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: The real guy.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: Um, was it Danny McBride?
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Danny McBride, yeah.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: So funny, in it too.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: He just finds fireworks in the bathroom and he's like he's like, Do you want to set them off?
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: And they set them off and they're just really weak fireworks.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Will Arnett is also dating, he dates Arla Fisher, and uh he's like truly looks like he could be her dad.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: And then also like when you consider um in arrested development, he so she dates um in arrested development, she dates um his brother and his nephew in that show.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't remember that wait, so is that Michael Sarah she dates?
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: She dates Michael Sarah and Jason Bateman in that show.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: That must be in the reboot.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: It was in the fourth series?
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Is that on the full season?
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Michael Sarah's like a kid in it.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Well, unless they wanted to make it like it was yeah, it was when it came back, but like the one they brought back a while ago.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, yeah.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: I don't remember that.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: I should be watching it.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: I did love Arrested Development.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: That's another like that I would say that's another style of humor that I love.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Um I think that's why Will Arnett's so great.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: He's he he's always so ridiculous in everything as well.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: And he really plays it well, and I don't I always believe he's that character as well.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: I always believe he's that douchey arsehole character.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, totally.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Uh so easy to believe.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: And I've been watching Bill Jack Horseman a lot recently, so I like Bojack.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: It's so good.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a great show.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: I I stupidly binge watched it once it was over, and for the first time, it made me so sad.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is like depressing and very kind of like philosophical.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: It definitely went a lot heavier than I was expecting from from I'd seen like the first couple of episodes when it first came out, and I wasn't really into it, and then everyone was going on about how great it was, so I went back and watched it once it was finished.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: No, it is heavy, yeah.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it's amazing.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um so uh Rod fights his stepdad, and he says, like, oh, I have to do this to earn his love.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: But he's terrible at fighting, and his dad stepdad constantly beats him up and just in the easiest way, and he's like, Oh, you have to you know you have to expect that I'm coming at all times or something like that.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: And um he makes fun of the fact that he can't grow a moustache, he's like, and then he just yells at him, he's like, You know I have a hormone disorder.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's okay.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: And then he goes, One day I'll punch you in the face, then you'll respect me.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Just insane.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: It's so insane this movie.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: And he runs outside and he runs into Denise, uh, who's Ida Fisher, uh, and she's just like come back from I don't know where she's where she's been, I can't remember where she's been, but like she's come back for the first time in a long time.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: She's staying there again.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Uh and he says to her, he says to her as he as he as she's leaving, he's like, You look really pretty, and she's like, What?
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: And he goes, I said you look really shitty which I still quote to this day because it's so funny.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: It's so funny, yeah.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: He has like he can't say anything to her, but he's say he's so upfront with everyone else, but cannot say anything to her.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: And just this is when you find out that this is when you see like the dad that you brought up earlier.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Um that you see him with a photo and he's next to Evil Konevil.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Uh and he's looking at it and he's crying.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: And then his brother walks into his room and he just yells, get out.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: And he's like best friends with his stepbrother, who is your mama con.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, who is yeah, he he's so like it's it's Yoma like you've never seen him as well.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like he could be he could be 13 or he could be 30 in this.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Like there's no he could be any age.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: It's never clear how old he is.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: I also found the way he dressed funny, like he wears really tight polos, like touching his vaccine.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: He's such a child in this, but at the same time, he's so aware of everything going on.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's I f I think he's sweet.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: I would say he's like the emotional center of this movie.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: He really loves Andy Sandberg.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: He loves them all, he loves the whole family, he wants to keep them together.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, he's sweet.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: So like, yeah, he invites um he invites Denise to go to um to go watch him do a pool jump, and he immediately fails it.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: And this is when he finds out that Frank is sick, and he goes, How long has he been sick?
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: And then and then uh CC Space accepts, oh he's been it's been it's recent, 21 years and then he says, I'm gonna make you feel better, then I'm gonna beat you to death.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: It's so good.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: I love that so much.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: And he goes, he runs outside in like pain from all this, and he comes to his quiet place, starts drinking and smoking, dancing, does all these flips, and then that's when he falls slips and falls down that hill for such a long time.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: The best scene in the movie.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: It's like such a callback to like 80s training as well, like there's eight, like the karate kid or something like that.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're like you're expecting him to like lift logs and all this stuff.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: No, nope, he just fall trips and falls and tumbles for I would say a good minute of the movie.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: And as he gets to the bottom of the hill, he's like he comes across the sign that says uh it's just like an advertisement that says like one big jump, and he gets the idea, I'm gonna do one big jump, I'm gonna raise money to save Frank, and I'm gonna jump 15 buses because it's one more than Evil Can Evil ever did.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Which is like going into it, you know it's gonna be a problem.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: You know 15 buses is stupid.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: And you see, like he goes to tell his friends the plan, and it's a montage of the plan at the ice rink because Bill Hayder's gotta go to work.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: And then a homeless guy comes along, starts telling him their starts telling them his plan as well, just out of nowhere.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: And uh he runs into so he's like that cuts to like next him next door to Denise, and she's like he spots her, starts like throw uh holding a mirror up to reflect in her eyes, so she gets the sunlight in her eyes, and then she goes to see what it is, and he's like pretending to hammer really loudly.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: He's just constantly trying to impress her, but it's always the stupidest things that he does.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly, yeah, yeah.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: And he wants her to join his crew.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Um, but to initiate he pours juice on her foot for some reason.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: And she just goes along with anything he does, she just like accepts it as being a normal thing.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: Which yeah, she's great.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: She plays it, she's kind of like plays everything straight, but it's she's really yeah.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: She plays it really straight.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: It's the one issue that I have with the film though, is that at no point does she question anything about what he's doing.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: And I kind of wish she had at some point said, like, oh, this is like do you not think this is too far?
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Like like maybe when Rico beat up that neighbor.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: That it's like taking having a fight with him after he like smashed into the into the van and everything.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Rico just goes crazy and she's like, Oh, Rico.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: At least then maybe so you're like, no, this is too much.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: She is, yeah, she kind of it's like typical gender roles too, where she just like accepts every insane thing the men do.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: And she especially the movie's not in any way like I wouldn't say it pushes any envelopes of any sort.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Like it's very much like let's fit these characters into their exact boxes that you expect them to be in.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, I feel like it very much does that.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's definitely uh I don't think it takes a specific stance on anything there.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: No, it's not a it's not a progressive film.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: It's not endorsed by the socialists, and it's but it is funny.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so Rod starts training, um and he goes to introduce her to everyone, and he's like, Well, tell her each person tells a fact about yourself.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: So my name is Rod and I like to party.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: And then Dave goes, My name is Dave and I like to party.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: He's immediately annoyed, he's like, No, no, that's my thing.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: My thing is partying.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: And then Rico's like, yeah, okay, my name's Rico, and I also like to party, and then he winks at Rod.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: And it's just I don't know why he's so fixated on the party thing, but it it really makes me laugh.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: And why he's only like I know he's trying to impress her.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: We never go to any parties.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: No, they never do anything.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: No, they never do it, but they definitely don't party.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: But the first thing she sees of him training is to like he's gonna go and hold his breath underwater for 40 seconds, which is not a long time.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: And he says, like, the one thing is I will I will be holding the belt, the the the bell, and if I ring it, that's when you know to let me out.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: And they immediately get distracted, the bell string falls off, and he's drowning underwater.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: And they like notice after he they notice after the 40 seconds that he's drowning, they drag him out.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: She performs mouth to mouth, he throws up fully in her face.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: It's revolting.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's not bothered in the slightest.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: I know, yeah.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: She just plays everything straight.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: I would be so disgusted if that happened.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm such a like, I don't know, any kind of vomit, even seeing it on screen just makes me so disgusted.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah, yeah, it is really gross.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: And then and then he goes to like go down a hill, lying on the skateboard, and he tells tells them the safe word is whiskey.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: Which is I know that as like a I've I remember that as being like a family guy joke, and so hearing that I was already like, oh, family guy joke.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: So one thing I'll say about this movie, I wouldn't say the jokes are that strong.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: Like if you read the script, I don't think it's funny.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Like it's like the the funny stuff is like the way that they just really like hammer things in, like that they'll just like I mean they it had some good jokes, but like it's like the movie is carried by the actors, I would say.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: And maybe that does come from like maybe that's what the difference is is that is that because it didn't come from something they wrote, they could only like hammer it in and keep heightening and just do what they could with with the dialogue itself, and maybe like that's what didn't work.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: It's like I wonder if they got the script and they were like, oh shit, we're gonna need to really do something big with it, or if they like the writer intended for it to be carried by the actor.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: Because that's like possibly.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: Maybe the writer already knew who was gonna start in it and was like, oh, if I give them free reign, like they'll make it a good slapstick comedy.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: I should have researched this before, but I wonder if it was an SNL writer that gave them the script.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: I mean it's not the it's not badly written.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: It just like I there was never like a joke that someone just like said that I thought was funny.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: The stuff that I thought was really funny was like in the performance.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: But a lot of the like I'm thinking about it, that is actually really true.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: A lot of the like a lot of the like the events that happened, it was funny to have to like think of like the jelly bean thing.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Like that takes like funny writing to like to add that, you know.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: It's not like an unfunny script.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, Jonathan shows up who's played by Will Arnett, he's just this over-the-top 80s persona of like the the shithead boyfriend.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it's exactly what you expect.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: He's got the Corvette, uh, he treats he's rude to everyone, he's got his like fancy suits, he's like just doing everything, throwing money around, all that sort of stuff.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: Um and so this is the first time that uh Rod finds out that she's got a boyfriend.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: Uh he gets really jealous, and he like goes and asks out um someone who works at um what is it she works at?
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Like a burger stand.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like a weird stand thing that they go to.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: We don't have that's not a thing here, so I don't even know what I it's like a very oh, it's definitely a thing here.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: Like a fast food joint, basically.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's just a fast food place.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: I thought so, yeah, like a fast food kind of like drive-thru, but you can sit on the picnic tables.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Ah, yeah, I guess it's like weather permitting here.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: We don't have it here.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, we have a lot of different kinds of fast food places.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: Um so he asks her out, and she says like he says that she says yes, but I don't know if she thinking about it now, I don't know if she ever really does say yes to him.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: That's a really good point.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: I can't remember her saying yes.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: We don't see her say yes.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: No, but he's like gonna go on the a double date with her and um Jonathan and Denise, and but you find out that um Bill Hayter's character is also like massively in love with this kid, this woman by the burgest.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: And he's like he says it very like straight, he's like, Oh, I am jolly I'm just green with jealous rage right now.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is great, and then um you find so they go on the double date, but um, and he's wearing his fancy shirt and he's on his he bikes there as well, which is great.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: He starts singing about going on the double date.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: He gets there, and he you find out he's been stood up, but so he's on the date with the two of them.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Um but it's okay because Will Arnett runs into his friend Sullivan, who he just like he yells out to and he starts he starts just being an arsehole and like walking away, and then you see him like flirting with this other woman and all this sort of stuff, so you know he's a bad guy.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Um and then he tells he tell he uses the time to tell Denise about the his dead dad.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: And he's like he tells this really gruesome story about about how the dad died and like being impaled and like going like his head got caved in and all this sort of stuff, and he goes, he died instantly the next day.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: That's a funny joke, yeah.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: It's a great joke.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: It's also the way it's just he tells it very straight as well, which is again like I think when they do that in this movie, it's very it works really well.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, when they play it very seriously, like I think that's what the humour is well.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: When they play it like it's a normal thing, it works.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: That's the comedy that I find very funny.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, totally, yeah, yeah.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, I'm gonna like the a lot of it is just little bits like that.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: It's the there's tight he she takes to him Tai Chi, he he becomes a stuntman for hire, he but he's a terrible stunt man, and they get really angry, he gets he sets himself on fire, it goes wrong.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: Um what else happens?
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: He like he does a bunch of like really stupid things that don't go well while he's a stuntman for hire, so he gets all this money he makes all this money but um and then his brother's been filming it all the brother puts together a like a little short film and it they get they're gonna like screen it to everyone and they put on this massive screen they sell tickets for five dollars at a time five dollars a ticket and they get hundreds of people coming and they've made all their money that they need to basically and everyone starts laughing because it's really bad he's so stupid and he gets angry throws the projector out the window smashes a car and then at that point he's just like oh well gonna have to pay all this off so they back down to square one again yeah yeah and this is the too legit to quit thing where he's like he gives up and he's like I've quit I thought I was legit but I'm but I'm too legit I thought I was too legit too legit to quit but it turns out I I wasn't legit enough so no for that I must quit yeah and then he and then he walks away and gets hit by a van never brought up again and just goes the next scene Bill Hader calls him in the middle of the night and asks him to come and take him to the hospital he's like nothing's wrong I just think I should probably go and he gets in the car he's he's got a big metal gash in his hair got a big piece of metal right above his eye and he found out he was on an acid trip and was doing some he was doing some work in the wood in like the shop and he like the piece of metal came flying and hit him right above the eye and it's so oh his character is so weird it's such a strange character.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah I think so too I think I I love him in this yeah um and then this is he got Ron goes to apologise to Kevin and they do that cool beans thing the cool beans which just over and over them saying cool beans back and forth to each other but it's like it's almost turned into like a mini music video just saying it of them just saying cool beans back and forth and they like say it to the camera and stuff yeah yeah yeah and then they just walk away and they find out the video's gone viral uh like he uploaded it to the internet the video went viral and they they uh a radio station want to sponsor him so he's like they get all the money to like fund the event basically the video the event's being funded so he's gonna jump the 15 buses he um he calls Denise and Jonathan answers and nothing uh he's like oh I need you to tell Denise that I'm jumping the these buses tomorrow and he's like yeah sure I'll do that obviously he doesn't then he's not then rod goes training um and then it cuts the next day and he's walking over to the event and then each one of them come along one by one start walking with him and it's cut to music and then like a huge crowd starts forming behind them and then it suddenly like starts turning into a riot that part is so funny and then they run away and they're like I didn't like that at all where did that come from starting out with like a really good vibe.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah and then like Fully stop yeah it's it's it's so ridiculous.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: Denise finds out and he like about the event and she runs away and then uh he starts shouting babe babe come back babe and then just goes babe wait babe babe and it goes on so much longer than you think it's gonna go on as well that's another yeah yeah they just like I feel like they really they nail you on the stuff that just goes on for so long um Rod gets a brand new bike to help jump the uh the buses um Denise kisses Rod he's like wait stop stop you've just got like your mouth open it's really disgusting which I thought was a really good joke because he's like Yeah it just comes out of nowhere that she's uh she just can't kiss yeah and then the jump happens obviously it goes badly he just like crashes he comes you think he's like you it comes to him and you see him like in the air and he puts a thumbs up to the crowd and everything and to the fans and and to his friends and everything and then it pulls back and you see he's about 10 feet off of the bike in the air and then he like immediately crashes and um so they all think he's in serious pain and like really injured and they think he might be dead and it cuts to him having like visuals of being in heaven and he sees a fight between a call cheese and a taco which is a callback to earlier when he asked Denise like what do you think who do you think would win a fight so he's fantasizing about that.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: But then he like wakes up he gets up and tries to walk away and as he's doing that all the donations start coming in so he reaches the 50k um and then and then the the radio announces like for he've they've reached the 50k for Frank's conveniently price surgery that's another good joke it's a good joke everyone starts cheering and then he cut it cuts to Ebenezer Scrooge holding a cooked goose and he's like a cooked goose for everyone cuts to six months later and he's he's grown like a wispy moustache he's managed to grow one he goes and fights Frank Frank throws an ninja star at him and um they have a fight all the way through the house into the backyard and then and then the mum's like I'll just let them do it then they know what they're doing and they go right all the way to the front of the house fighting each other um smashes his smashes Frank's head on the car pulls his arm back and he's like say you're say you're a man he's like you're a man you're you're my son and then they have the Tai Chi fight and he does the Tai Chi move and makes Frank shit himself and then it's the end of the movie it's Frank's shitting himself.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's a real thing.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: No I don't think it is either I wish it was I think it's making fun of Kill Bill with the like the heart thing.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: Oh okay yeah I've never seen Kill Bill I don't know if you care but like there's a thing where they they do like a bunch of moves and it's supposed to like um be able to stop uh the heart fight after you walk five feet or something.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: Oh I see okay no I've never making fun of that sounds good though um but yeah that's the that's that's the movie um you've kind of talked about what you thought of it like going into it but like what did so what were what were things that you really enjoyed about it other than like the the sp like those random gags did you enjoy the did you enjoy the plot or did you is it just like hit or miss written plot I didn't care about like there were a lot of different ways I wasn't invested in Rod succeeding if that was what you mean.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: I I was definitely invested in that I don't think anyone is right it would not have made me sad if the stepfather had died um or if Rod had like been very successful with his jump or something.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: So no I wouldn't say I was invested in the plot at all.
- 52:03SPEAKER_01: I also didn't really care whether or not Andy Sandberg got together with Isla Fisher.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah no so I wouldn't say I was remotely invested um I yeah I just thought the acting was really really funny it was just like yeah Andy Sandberg just like really committed to being Ernest character and it was really good.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah yeah and I think that they I think that they they really committed to some long bits which was impressive like yeah there were like a lot that were funny.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: It was like the you know when something like starts off funny and then kind of gets unfunny because you know what it's gonna be and then they keep repeating it and then it becomes funny again like that's how I felt about like rolling down the hill.
- 52:41SPEAKER_00: I was like this is rolling down the hill for like a minute and a half like yeah I want to go back and time that and see how long it actually is.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: I know right yeah and the yeah there's those two and the cool beans they all go those are the three very long scenes there's just one joke that goes over and yeah yeah yeah um but other than that like um so do you think it's a good movie overall yeah I think it uh achieves what it's supposed to be like I didn't think about it at all after I watched it but I was entertained you know like it's funny I laughed I think it's a good movie what were the what it what were the mean things people said about it?
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah I was about to go to those yeah um so so this was in USA Today they said if you're looking for plausibility this is not your movie which is fine that's understandable like who is looking for plausibility I know but then they said they also said if you're looking for last this is not your movie.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: Alright that's fine if if you like seeing delusional overgrown adolescents fall down a lot then this one's for you I like that yeah that review wouldn't have turned me off and I I really don't like this review and it was it's from a very famous person as well I'll tell you afterwards um the silly kills the funny every time things get rolling some guy starts doing a ridiculous dance for no reason or Rod and his brother incessantly repeat the word cool beans I think that's the humor that works I I agree what is it was that a tweet no this is a review was it Robert Kurt or whatever no it was Lindy West Whoa okay and it was a review from last year yeah yeah from last year surprising why is she reviewing how rad every yeah I don't know it's from March 2019 I don't know if it's just an old review that got put online and shit yeah yeah um and someone else called it the jackarsification of mainstream American comedy that may be true I can I mean I don't know if they're just talking about the jackass movies themselves and saying it's very similar to that.
- 55:04SPEAKER_00: If they are then no I don't agree with that but it's it's stupid comedy and it's it's definitely jackarsery I guess I don't know it's not a word but yeah yeah that makes sense so yeah like those those are kind of like the reviews like people so this is one that you might agree with actually once someone said that um there a perennial problem with comedy from regular collaborators is that results feel like uh must too much like friends in jokes yeah it's definitely like it wouldn't have been as funny if you didn't kind of know that they were all friends definitely it has that like Judd Apatow kind of vibe that I would slightly disagree with because I feel like Judd Apatow's ones are lengthy and just they just and they they always have like very serious heavy plot mixed within them as well.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: That's true they do have a lot of plot yeah yeah yeah they're like I mean I like some Judd Avatar movies but some of them feel like in jokes like um this is the end I like this is the end I liked it too but I know those guys it's like if I had never seen a Jet Avatar movie I wouldn't have liked it.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Like if I didn't know who Michael Sarah was the stuff of so funny but that's like the best part of the movie.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah definitely yeah I guess like you have to be on board with you have to already be on board with the people themselves to get like because they're gonna like hide heighten it so much with their style of humor and like play to that.
- 56:35SPEAKER_00: And they're also playing to their fans a little bit right yeah yeah totally okay do you have anything more to say about this film?
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Um well I I felt nostalgic watching it like it feels like a type of film.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'm thinking like maybe uh I don't know it just feels like the kind of thing that wouldn't really get made now which could I I haven't seen King of Staten Island.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: Maybe King of Staten Island is like the same humor but it's not yeah it's so much worse than this it's it's it's worse.
- 57:06SPEAKER_00: I really didn't like it.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: I'm really not wild about Pete Davidson so I'm not gonna watch it.
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: Um Staten Island Summer though which is like all this now people is bad but um yeah I didn't like that yeah I I yeah it kind of felt like a throwback to like a style I and they I'm sure they do make movies like this now but I felt like yeah like watching a young Andy Sandberg um not that he's not still young but like I think because of you know the state of the world anything nostalgia is really nice.
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: Like I just would prefer to watch something old a little bit but it's like it's not like an old movie but it's like um I remember like the age I was in my life when I when I felt popular and it felt like a and the fact that it's like summertime like these guys kind of have nothing to do and made me nostalgic for those kind of summers like I just yeah yeah I I enjoyed it a lot.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: I had a very good experience watching Hot Rod.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you enjoyed it still going into it would have been really funny if you'd come in and you just hated yeah I agree with every review.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah but I agree that it's like dumb like it's not like if you called it dumb and said the joke for dumb I'd be like yeah I can see that it's not like you know if you're looking for a movie to make you think it this is not the movie.
- 58:22SPEAKER_00: But I don't think it ever claims to be that as well.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: No it does not that's the thing it is what it claims to be yeah yeah um okay so let's move on to the the final segment which is um do you have a movie that's uh everyone loves that is well reviewed that you think is a bad movie this happens to me so often because I actually just like don't like most movies.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: Perfect I don't know why I think I like don't have the attention span for them but I often don't even really go and look in to see how well reviewed they are um was American Pickle well reviewed American what?
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: American Pickle an American pickle with Seth Rogan I think it was like just above average I don't think it was that highly rated okay I thought that movie was bad.
- 59:14SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think of movies I've seen recently um I mean I definitely have never been like entertained by like a Martin Scorsese movie or like a well that's those would be good ones to like yeah I can't even like think of sp like I can't even think of specifics.
- 59:30SPEAKER_00: I should have I should have I should have a better answer for this um that's all right and I'm trying to I know that like in the last like two years there's been like a movie everyone was obsessed with that I was super the recent Scorsese ones like maybe the Irishman the Wolf of Wall Street Oh I thought marriage story was just okay.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: Is that you want to go with if you can remember just like annoys me a lot uh I get that Adam Driver I thought was great in it but yeah when I watching marriage story I was like why why did we make this movie?
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: We've debated New York versus LA endlessly maybe as a person who's lived like pretty much exclusively in New York and LA minus like a brief stay in the Bay Area like I just found the convert I just found the debate about um New York versus LA very annoying oh did you grow up in New York?
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_00: I grew up in New York yeah uh so yeah you know the whole yeah exactly yeah how long have you been in LA now?
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: I've been in LA for like a year and a half.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: Oh recent yeah I'm pretty recent yeah especially with everything going on as well it's just like maybe a a year technically I know truly I'm like why did I live in this why am I quarantining in this city?
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: I don't really know but it's been I actually kinda like that I'm sort of new to the city in quarantine because just like exploring the city has been an activity in and of itself like going and walking so that's kind of I guess it's also like you're you're obviously in like a bigger place there as well than you're gonna be in New York.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: So it's a little bit more free freedom than you're gonna have.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_01: Exactly do you have like a good amount of space in your apartment in London?
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: Um I didn't I've just moved back with my parents as well though and they live in London too.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: Like just outside yeah so I've got a little bit more space now but at the same time it's middle of nowhere.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah yeah it's very quiet now yeah yeah I know no it's a it's a nice London I had the freedom to like go and do things and now I'm like uh what do I do?
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah totally yeah yeah but uh yeah so uh do you have anything uh any final thoughts on marriage story then final thoughts on marriage story um I will probably inevitably continue to watch everything Noah Bomback makes and so for what reason for what reason you know he's just kinda like it's just like he makes stuff that people are talking about and it's you know he makes the kind of stuff where even if it's bad I'm gonna want to have a smart opinion on why it's bad and explain why so for that reason I would implore him to make uh more original content that's not about like his personal divorce which I feel like hasn't like I was okay we put on the Meyerwitz Meyerwitz stories the other night and then like weren't really paying attention and every time I like zone back into the movie it was like someone was mad at his dad or talking about his ex-wife and I was like these are these are every Noah Bomback.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: But he the you know like the the writing is good he uh you know like he the he knows dialogue I'll give I'll give him like he's like smart yeah but um he could explore a variety of themes he could go broader.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: Although he did write Madagascar two or three oh really I'll watch yeah yeah he he what he wrote it to like fund something else I think or like to fund it might have been to fund his divorce then I'll definitely watch it I'd love to support the cause but then you have to watch it in the mindset of like oh this this is he's writing this to fund a divorce so any I wonder if he's written anything of that into it into like this kid's movie that's so funny yeah it's really great cool so um yeah any final thoughts on hot rod even no I think yeah I think you covered it I think we covered it we okay well great do you um how can we find you online do you have oh do you have anything to plug at the moment um I wrote a book you can find it on my Twitter my Twitter is Jinny Hogan G-I-N-N-Y-H-R-G-A-N underscore I tweet I tweet a lot yeah so do we all yeah we all do right yeah gotta just be tweeting my thoughts yeah cool and what's the name of the book Toxic Femininity in the Workplace great yeah yeah and it's available everywhere I'm assuming it's available everywhere you can order it online perfect nice everyone go and check the book out and Jinny's Twitter and her thoughts whatever my thoughts there you go well thanks for coming on yeah thank you for having me this was really fun that's the end of the podcast you can find me on Twitter with the username at YCove or at YanisCove on Instagram please remember to rate and review us on iTunes if you enjoyed this so I can end up making more and I'll see you next week for more movies that critics got rolled
