Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, the truth about sorority life, with
• 0:04
Speaker 1: your hosts, me, Gia Giudice, Daisy Kent.
• 0:07
Speaker 2: And Jennifer Fessler. Hi, you guys. Welcome back to Dirty Rush.
• 0:14
Speaker 1: I am Jen Fessler, and today we have the second episode,
• 0:20
Speaker 1: the second time that we get to talk to Shannon
• 0:24
  Speaker 1: Storms Bedore.
• 0:26
Speaker 2: Okay, so I know one of your daughters is in
• 0:29
  Speaker 2: a sorority.
• 0:30
Speaker 3: Sophie was a Kappa at Baylor, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Okay.
• 0:33
Speaker 2: At Baylor. So there you go.
• 0:34
Speaker 1: So that's like an intense, Baylor is, you know, that's
• 0:37
  Speaker 1: a Texas school.
• 0:38
Speaker 2: That's like a serious, serious rush.
• 0:41
  Speaker 1: And I don't know, you know, just now I, I
• 0:44
Speaker 1: feel like I know a lot about, especially in the South,
• 0:47
Speaker 1: what goes on during rush and the intensity of it.
• 0:50
Speaker 2: I don't know if you, with.
• 0:51
Speaker 1: Sophie there, we've had podcasts where like mothers went and
• 0:56
Speaker 1: tried to you know, bribe the girls, bringing big platters
• 1:02
Speaker 1: of cookies over to the house before their daughters rushed.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: And all the mothers are there and they're all involved
• 1:11
Speaker 1: in the buying of the outfits.
• 1:13
Speaker 2: And was that you with Sophie?
• 1:15
Speaker 3: Well, I did make sure she had recommendations with good photographs.
• 1:18
  Speaker 2: That's good.
• 1:19
Speaker 3: Because I didn't do that, but it was helpful for
• 1:22
Speaker 3: me when I was vice chairman and president to be
• 1:24
Speaker 3: able to show our girls photographs of the girls people
• 1:28
Speaker 3: that were coming in so you kind of knew who
• 1:30
Speaker 3: you wanted to look out for because you basically got
• 1:32
Speaker 3: a resume today when i write recommendations for people oh
• 1:36
Speaker 3: my god it's like a flipping resume they send me
• 1:39
Speaker 3: i mean it wasn't like that for me no i
• 1:41
Speaker 3: wanted her to do well and at baylor they rush
• 1:44
Speaker 3: in the spring so there were all these rules like
• 1:46
Speaker 3: you couldn't go to a fraternity party or you couldn't
• 1:51
Speaker 3: spend time with sorority girls that was called dirty rushing
• 1:55
Speaker 3: so it And they, I guess they implemented it. So. Yeah.
• 2:00
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 2:01
  Speaker 2: My daughter too.
• 2:02
Speaker 3: But she got into her, she got into her number one,
• 2:04
Speaker 3: you know, and as a mother knowing what the hell
• 2:06
Speaker 3: I went through, getting in anywhere I wanted to get in,
• 2:10
Speaker 3: you know, my heart would be pounding at night.
• 2:14
Speaker 2: Shannon, that is what we talked to.
• 2:16
Speaker 1: We talked to a lot of mothers about that, that
• 2:18
Speaker 1: it becomes so intense and so heartbreaking, right. For these girls,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: especially when they, don't get in anywhere. It's just awful.
• 2:29
Speaker 3: It's life altering because the rejection and then the rejection
• 2:34
Speaker 3: in front of so many others. I mean, I remember
• 2:36
Speaker 3: we'd get our sheet and everyone in my little rush
• 2:38
Speaker 3: group was there and it's like, yeah, I didn't get any.
• 2:41
  Speaker 3: I mean, it's devastating.
• 2:42
Speaker 2: It's awful, but yes.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: But listen, listeners, I want you to hear this. Shannon
• 2:48
Speaker 1: Storms Bedore- Didn't get in. And she went back for more.
• 2:53
Speaker 1: And she still didn't get into her top sorority. And
• 2:56
Speaker 1: she became the president. And she became the queen of Bravo. So, ladies,
• 3:00
  Speaker 1: just hang in.
• 3:01
Speaker 3: It's a bit of an exaggeration, Jen.
• 3:03
Speaker 2: Well, I'm going with it.
• 3:05
Speaker 3: No, I agree. And I'm hoping that in today's world
• 3:09
Speaker 3: that things are a little bit different and more inclusive. And,
• 3:13
Speaker 3: you know, it's not just about looks or money. You
• 3:17
Speaker 3: look at the whole person, you know? And intelligence should
• 3:20
Speaker 3: have everything to do with it.
• 3:21
  Speaker 2: They do.
• 3:22
Speaker 1: I mean, yes, we definitely now, we talk to a
• 3:26
Speaker 1: lot of girls and they want to be in the
• 3:29
Speaker 1: brainiac sorority and the one with the best grades. And
• 3:31
Speaker 1: there's a lot of that that goes on now. And
• 3:33
Speaker 1: I think there's a lot more diversity. And I think that, yes,
• 3:38
Speaker 1: sororities are looking at different things, not just at looks
• 3:42
  Speaker 1: and money.
• 3:43
Speaker 2: I'm happy to report.
• 3:45
Speaker 3: I've been back to USC and it's a completely different school.
• 3:47
Speaker 3: On a Thursday night when the line for the 9-0
• 3:49
Speaker 3: would be around the block, it's dead now because everyone's
• 3:53
Speaker 3: in their dorm rooms studying. So it is different.
• 3:57
Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I remember my kids were applying. USC is
• 3:59
Speaker 2: not an easy school to get into.
• 4:01
  Speaker 1: No.
• 4:02
Speaker 2: Yeah. So Sophie is in, but your other two didn't
• 4:06
Speaker 2: want to... Rush. So where, tell me a little bit
• 4:09
  Speaker 2: about that.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: Well, Adeline is at Parsons in New York city.
• 4:12
Speaker 2: So there's no design. So there's no sports.
• 4:15
Speaker 3: There's no, uh, nothing like that. Yeah.
• 4:19
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 4:19
Speaker 2: Is she enjoying it?
• 4:20
Speaker 3: Oh, she loves it. I mean, I went to a
• 4:23
Speaker 3: three in New York city and they're never, I think
• 4:25
Speaker 3: there's going to be back East forever, but Stella did
• 4:28
Speaker 3: get into USC and the Trojan transfer program. So she
• 4:32
Speaker 3: had to go abroad for her first year and she chose, uh, Paris.
• 4:36
Speaker 3: So there were eight boys and six girls from USC.
• 4:40
Speaker 3: They went to American University of Paris, traveled every weekend,
• 4:43
Speaker 3: which I loved because there were eight boys, so they
• 4:45
Speaker 3: were always together taking care of the girls. And then
• 4:48
Speaker 3: she fell in love with it, and she transferred to
• 4:51
Speaker 3: American University of Paris and just started her senior year there.
• 4:54
  Speaker 2: Wow.
• 4:54
Speaker 3: And she does not want to come home. So I
• 4:56
  Speaker 3: love that.
• 4:57
Speaker 2: I love that. You got some cool cats. I love that.
• 4:59
Speaker 3: Yeah. So there's no, again, there's no sororities. There are
• 5:02
Speaker 3: football teams or anything. But my kids were raised as
• 5:05
Speaker 3: USC Trojans when they were born. So they had their
• 5:08
Speaker 3: fair share fill of football and all the sports.
• 5:11
Speaker 1: Well, what was it like going to parents weekend? Like
• 5:15
Speaker 1: with Sophie, was it, did you feel bombarded?
• 5:18
Speaker 3: I made Waco a very frequent spot for me to visit.
• 5:23
Speaker 3: But I would go there quite often. And you know, USC,
• 5:26
Speaker 3: they say University of Spoiled Children. I say Successful Children.
• 5:30
  Speaker 2: There you go.
• 5:31
Speaker 3: You know, there's always like money. UCLA will put a
• 5:34
Speaker 3: dollar bill in their hands because USC goes like this.
• 5:36
Speaker 3: And it's like, yeah, okay, whatever. But when you go
• 5:39
Speaker 3: to a lot of these schools in the South, like Baylor,
• 5:42
Speaker 3: I'm telling you, there was a lot of wealth when
• 5:44
Speaker 3: I would go to the football games. I would go
• 5:45
Speaker 3: to at least one football game a year. And the
• 5:48
Speaker 3: people were so kind and welcoming. And I've... I've created
• 5:51
Speaker 3: a lot of friendships by visiting Waco for four years. Yeah.
• 5:55
Speaker 2: Did you get bombarded?
• 5:57
  Speaker 3: A little bit. I mean, a little, a little. Yeah.
• 6:00
Speaker 2: We always do. I guess it's like.
• 6:02
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 6:03
  Speaker 2: But I do.
• 6:04
Speaker 3: I think I do more when I go to the
• 6:05
  Speaker 3: USC games actually.
• 6:07
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 6:07
Speaker 3: Cause I still have season tickets, but it, it, it
• 6:11
Speaker 3: was nice. It's, it was, it was nice to experience
• 6:14
Speaker 3: something so different than USC, but Baylor doesn't have actual
• 6:19
Speaker 3: sorority houses. There's not like we had a house where
• 6:23
Speaker 3: I think 50 girls could live.
• 6:25
  Speaker 2: So did we.
• 6:26
Speaker 3: Yeah. So that was a bummer, I felt, for Sophie.
• 6:29
Speaker 3: But at Baylor, they do something neat. And I don't
• 6:32
Speaker 3: know if they do it in other schools. They have
• 6:34
Speaker 3: these houses. Like she was a Kappa with a K.
• 6:37
Speaker 3: And the sophomores would live in Cowboy, K-O-W-B-O-Y. And so
• 6:42
Speaker 3: they were five-bedroom homes. And then you'd move to like,
• 6:45
Speaker 3: I don't know, they had names for all the houses.
• 6:47
Speaker 3: So the girls would live together in like a five-bedroom house.
• 6:51
Speaker 3: So they got a little bit of a sorority-ish.
• 6:53
Speaker 2: They got the feel.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: Did you go with her to the frat parties? Like,
• 6:58
Speaker 1: was it, because my experience going, my daughter went to Delaware.
• 7:01
Speaker 1: And so we went to the frat parties and all
• 7:05
Speaker 1: the mothers were wasted and And I might've been a
• 7:08
Speaker 1: little wasted myself and I never made, thankfully I never
• 7:11
Speaker 1: made a big fool of myself, but there was a
• 7:13
Speaker 1: lot of that going on. Like women trying to relive
• 7:16
  Speaker 1: those days.
• 7:17
  Speaker 3: Really?
• 7:17
Speaker 2: You see that? Yeah.
• 7:19
Speaker 3: I didn't really see that, but there were, you know,
• 7:21
Speaker 3: it was such a small town. There was one place
• 7:23
Speaker 3: known for pickle shots. I'll never do that again. And
• 7:27
Speaker 3: then I would go, Sophie's boyfriend was in a fraternity
• 7:31
Speaker 3: and you'd go to the party outside and there would
• 7:33
Speaker 3: just be broken beer bottles all over the ground.
• 7:35
  Speaker 2: It was gross.
• 7:36
Speaker 3: Why aren't you sweeping this up?
• 7:38
  Speaker 2: Yep.
• 7:39
Speaker 3: But I didn't see that. That would have been a kick.
• 7:43
Speaker 3: I will tell you, I only go to one football
• 7:45
Speaker 3: game a year because when I go, I start acting
• 7:48
Speaker 3: like I was when I was 18 years old. So
• 7:50
  Speaker 3: it's exhausting.
• 7:50
Speaker 2: That's the whole thing.
• 7:51
Speaker 1: You know how many girls we've spoken to about on
• 7:54
Speaker 1: the pod about like their parents and what their parents
• 7:56
Speaker 1: did or what their best friend's parent did. There's, I'll
• 8:01
Speaker 1: never forget the story of someone came on and said
• 8:03
Speaker 1: that her sorority sister's mom came, got wasted and started
• 8:08
Speaker 1: making out with one of the frat boys.
• 8:10
  Speaker 2: Can you imagine?
• 8:12
  Speaker 3: No.
• 8:13
Speaker 2: And you, I know, I know.
• 8:15
Speaker 3: But I'm sure it happens. I'm sure it does.
• 8:18
Speaker 1: It's like a great, you go back and I think
• 8:20
Speaker 1: the parents, especially like our first year, Jeff Fessler is
• 8:24
Speaker 1: not a drinker and he's doing like bongs and like,
• 8:28
Speaker 1: I mean, he is like, he was, I mean, my
• 8:32
Speaker 1: daughter insisted, so he did what he had to do,
• 8:34
Speaker 1: but you know, it's like so much fun to sort
• 8:37
Speaker 1: of be back in, you know, in that, that whole
• 8:40
Speaker 1: vibe of just Greek life. Yes.
• 8:43
Speaker 3: But when you're 62, it catches up on you. Yes.
• 8:47
Speaker 2: Oh yes. Honey, 58, 62, it's all the same thing.
• 9:05
Speaker 1: Tell me if you have just some advice for like
• 9:10
Speaker 1: the moms of girls that are going through.
• 9:13
Speaker 3: You know, I don't want to say just let your daughter,
• 9:17
Speaker 3: you know, like do the, help your daughter do the research.
• 9:20
Speaker 3: I wish that my mother had done that. Cause I
• 9:23
Speaker 3: didn't know how, what, how people dress. I didn't really
• 9:27
Speaker 3: know what the process was. So try it and just
• 9:30
Speaker 3: help educate your daughter on what, they have coming ahead
• 9:33
Speaker 3: of them and get those letters of recommendation out because
• 9:36
Speaker 3: in order at least in our sorority in order to
• 9:40
Speaker 3: get for us to extend a bid to someone they
• 9:42
Speaker 3: already had to have they had to have a letter
• 9:44
Speaker 3: of recommendation so you're going to need to get that
• 9:47
Speaker 3: at some point but you know what you just love
• 9:51
Speaker 3: yourself and be who you are you know i wasn't
• 9:54
Speaker 3: going to go hi hi it's like a joke we
• 9:57
Speaker 3: still have a joke in my family where we go, hi,
• 9:59
Speaker 3: that means you have something in your teeth. It just,
• 10:02
Speaker 3: it was never me. So just be yourself and you
• 10:04
Speaker 3: will find the right place. I think Alpha Chi Omega
• 10:07
  Speaker 3: was my place.
• 10:09
Speaker 2: It was the right place for you.
• 10:10
Speaker 3: I wasn't happy about it at the beginning, but you
• 10:13
  Speaker 3: know what? I learned a lot. I had a great
• 10:16
Speaker 3: college experience there. Something that I'll never forget.
• 10:20
Speaker 1: Charles, I hope really you are listening to this, like,
• 10:23
Speaker 1: especially because you got into one that you didn't think
• 10:25
Speaker 1: was your place. And now you're saying that it was
• 10:27
Speaker 1: your place. You were the president of the damn thing. No. Yeah.
• 10:30
Speaker 3: You know, you never know what's going to happen. You know,
• 10:33
Speaker 3: maybe maybe you're put in a place like I feel
• 10:37
Speaker 3: as though I changed some things for the better. So, yeah, that.
• 10:42
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 10:43
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 10:43
Speaker 1: You know, they have now sorority coaches just like they
• 10:46
  Speaker 1: have college counselors.
• 10:47
  Speaker 3: Knock it off.
• 10:49
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 10:49
Speaker 1: So we've interviewed more than one, not only so they
• 10:53
Speaker 1: have coaches that women hire them like senior year of
• 10:57
Speaker 1: high school, and they start with cleaning up the girl's
• 10:59
Speaker 1: social media and they pay thousands of dollars. When I
• 11:04
Speaker 1: say thousands, I mean, thousands, what to drip, how to dress,
• 11:09
Speaker 1: what to say. And when we've spoken to them and
• 11:12
Speaker 1: I always feel bad sort of you know, rolling my eyes.
• 11:16
Speaker 1: The truth is they say they're trying to help these girls.
• 11:18
Speaker 1: It's almost like job interviews get to where they want
• 11:21
Speaker 1: to be. So I guess from that perspective, I would,
• 11:24
Speaker 1: my daughter ever asked me to hire her a sorority coach.
• 11:28
Speaker 2: No way, but they have rush chair, rush coaches, excuse me.
• 11:33
Speaker 1: They have now decorators for the dorm room. So we've
• 11:38
Speaker 1: interviewed them where people are literally hiring interior decorators. designers
• 11:45
Speaker 1: for dorm rooms or house rooms or whatever it is.
• 11:49
  Speaker 2: It is crazy.
• 11:51
Speaker 1: I don't know that I could have handled that back then.
• 11:53
Speaker 3: No, I think social media has really upped it too
• 11:56
Speaker 3: because now everyone posts all of it. I did have
• 11:59
Speaker 3: organic headboards made for Sophie and her roommate.
• 12:02
  Speaker 2: I did too. I can't lie. I bought one. I
• 12:04
Speaker 2: definitely didn't have it made, but I did buy one
• 12:06
  Speaker 2: for Rachel.
• 12:07
Speaker 3: But yeah, I think everything today is over the top.
• 12:10
Speaker 3: You know, I hired college counselors for all my kids.
• 12:14
Speaker 3: My ex didn't agree with it. He didn't agree with it.
• 12:16
Speaker 3: So I paid for it. And so I don't know
• 12:19
Speaker 3: that I would say no. Like if everyone going through
• 12:23
Speaker 3: Rush was having a Rush coach, I would not want
• 12:26
Speaker 3: to deny that of my daughter. But at the same time,
• 12:30
Speaker 3: at the same time, I'm listening to your mother.
• 12:34
Speaker 2: But Shannon, I'm telling you, if I paid.
• 12:36
  Speaker 1: $ 5, 000 for my kids' college coaches. It was like $ 5, 000
• 12:40
Speaker 1: for a rush. Something like that. I don't remember exactly
• 12:43
Speaker 1: what I paid. It was a while ago.
• 12:44
  Speaker 2: They're 24 and 26. But like a lot of money.
• 12:48
Speaker 2: Not like silly money. Thousands.
• 12:50
Speaker 1: So I think I would definitely like kind of rail
• 12:53
Speaker 1: against that. It's funny because Gia, Jude Ice, who is
• 12:57
Speaker 1: our other, who's my co-host on this pod, was.
• 13:00
Speaker 2: Saying that, you know, Risa didn't know anything.
• 13:03
Speaker 1: And so she was sort of able to say to her,
• 13:05
Speaker 1: cause you know, Teresa was in a storage, mom, I
• 13:08
Speaker 1: need this, I need that.
• 13:09
  Speaker 2: And okay, okay.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: You know, maybe, you know, maybe that was a plus
• 13:14
Speaker 1: because if Rachel had come to me and said, I
• 13:17
Speaker 1: need an interior designer for my dorm room, we would
• 13:20
Speaker 1: have had a very big problem.
• 13:21
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 13:22
Speaker 3: So I get it. I tried to be the interior
• 13:25
Speaker 3: designer of my daughter's dorm room and that didn't go
• 13:27
Speaker 3: over so well. No, it didn't go over so well.
• 13:30
Speaker 3: She left half the stuff in the hallway. That I
• 13:33
Speaker 3: paid to transport over there.
• 13:35
Speaker 2: Oh, my daughter just leans on me completely. My son
• 13:38
Speaker 2: will barely let me in the room. Can't take it.
• 13:42
Speaker 1: Hey, I feel like you're a very good fit for this.
• 13:45
  Speaker 1: I don't know how much, I know you don't have
• 13:47
Speaker 1: a lot of time in your life, but I would
• 13:48
Speaker 1: really love to come back and talk like, I don't know,
• 13:51
Speaker 1: other stuff, specifics about this life.
• 13:54
Speaker 2: Because I love talking to you about it.
• 13:56
Speaker 1: And I feel like, you know, a lot of the
• 13:59
Speaker 1: girls that are listening are, Because especially to me, meaningful
• 14:03
Speaker 1: is like what you just said about not getting in.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: Because I would have not guessed that beautiful blonde Shannon
• 14:07
Speaker 1: Storms didn't get into.
• 14:09
Speaker 3: Well, it wasn't blonde then either, Jen.
• 14:12
Speaker 2: There you go. It wasn't blonde. It was wearing pinstripes
• 14:15
Speaker 2: and a big nose. So horrible. And look at you now.
• 14:21
Speaker 2: I really appreciate your joining us.
• 14:23
Speaker 3: Well, thank you for having me. It was so much fun.
• 14:25
Speaker 1: Okay, you guys, so that is it for this episode
• 14:28
