- 0:02Each society, each religion, each culture in the world has
- 0:08its own characteristic ideas and responses to the questions that
- 0:12arise during an individual's life.
- 0:15Many of these are programmed into the individual in
- 0:18childhood, starting with prenatal conditioning based on
- 0:22the energies of the mother. Once the child is born, he is
- 0:27trained to accept the societal norms and modes of reaction to
- 0:30various circumstances until these become an unspoken
- 0:35assumption that forms the basis of the individual's life
- 0:39responses and judgments. The human intellect actually
- 0:44expects to have certain frameworks and predetermined
- 0:47filters for the input it receives.
- 0:51This makes the process of deciding things much faster than
- 0:54if all the data and all the vibrational patterns had to be
- 0:58analyzed each time in order to come to any conclusions.
- 1:03Thus the system has evolved in such a way that it speeds the
- 1:07ability of the individual to navigate his way through
- 1:11society. It should be noted that due to
- 1:15cultural differences, some of these life ways that are second
- 1:19nature to an individual in his own culture are foreign to life
- 1:23and other cultures and simply do not translate well across
- 1:27cultural barriers. Language limitations also help
- 1:32create the framework within which the mind functions.
- 1:34Under normal circumstances. Between cultural and language
- 1:39frameworks, most individuals live their lives truly
- 1:43circumscribed within a specific set of boundaries, and these
- 1:48boundaries are unseen and unrecognized for the most part.
- 1:54There are, of course, downsides to this filtering and framing
- 1:57process. While it may help to have
- 2:00certain laws or axioms as a starting point in mathematics or
- 2:04physics, it becomes less valuable in fields of human
- 2:08interactions where these can turn into various forms of bias
- 2:13or prejudice, or preconceived notions about people based on
- 2:18their external appearance, dress, or the accent they use in
- 2:23their expression of language. The famous story of My Fair Lady
- 2:29revolved around an English professor who could judge the
- 2:33class of any individual based on their accent, word usage, slang,
- 2:38et cetera. He undertook to change the
- 2:41perception of a specific individual through training her
- 2:45to speak in a totally different mode.
- 2:48Obviously preconceived notions, bias and prejudice can create
- 2:54tremendous dislocations and disharmony in any society,
- 2:59breeding a fixed class structure that also determines access to
- 3:04and allocation of resources. From the point of view of yogic
- 3:10practice, one of the first requirements is for the seeker
- 3:13to become aware of this type of predetermined response built
- 3:17into the subconscious basis that rules much of their responses to
- 3:21life. Once aware of these things, the
- 3:25seeker can begin to take steps to overcome these inherent,
- 3:28untested and unspoken assumptions and thereby liberate
- 3:34himself from the bondage of the fixed habits of mind and the
- 3:38past, which otherwise hinder his growth and development.
- 3:42One tool to do this is to consciously practice a method
- 3:46known as the empty box. In whatever situation the
- 3:50individual finds himself, instead of assuming he knows
- 3:53what to do and how to do it, he can step back and look at it
- 3:58with a fresh viewpoint, as if nothing at all were fixed.
- 4:02And the situation is an empty box waiting for new creative
- 4:07insight for resolution of next steps to be taken.
- 4:12The mother observes, quote, When a being is born upon earth, he
- 4:18is inevitably born in a certain country and a certain
- 4:21environment. Due to his physical parents, he
- 4:24is born in a set of social, cultural, national, sometimes
- 4:29religious circumstances, a set of habits of thinking, of
- 4:33understanding, of feeling, conceiving all sorts of
- 4:38constructions which are at first mental, then become vital
- 4:42habits, and finally material modes of being.
- 4:46To put things more clearly, you are born in a certain society or
- 4:50religion in a particular country, and this society has a
- 4:54collective conception of its own, and this nation has a
- 4:58collective conception of its own.
- 5:00This religion has a collective construction of its own, which
- 5:04is usually very fixed. You were born into it naturally
- 5:09when you are very young, you were altogether unaware of it.
- 5:13But it acts on your formation, that formation, that slow
- 5:18formation through hours and hours, through days and days,
- 5:23experiences added to experiences, which gradually
- 5:27builds up a consciousness. You are underneath it, as
- 5:31beneath a bell glass. It is a kind of construction
- 5:35which covers and in a way protects you, but in other ways
- 5:39limits you considerably. All this you absorb without even
- 5:44being aware of it, and this forms the subconscious basis of
- 5:48your own construction. This subconscious basis will act
- 5:53on you throughout your life if you do not take care to free
- 5:56yourself from it, And to free yourself from it, you must first
- 6:01of all become aware of it. And the first step is the most
- 6:05difficult, For this formation was so subtle, it was made when
- 6:09you were not yet a conscious being, when you had just fallen
- 6:13altogether, dazed from another world into this one laughing.
- 6:19And it all happened without your participating in it, in the
- 6:23least in it. Therefore it does not even occur
- 6:27to you that there could be something to know there, and
- 6:30still less something you must get rid of.
- 6:33And it is quite remarkable that when for some reason or other
- 6:37you do become aware of the hold of this collective suggestion,
- 6:42you realize at the same time that a very assiduous and
- 6:47prolonged labour is necessary in order to get rid of it.
- 6:51But the problem does not end there.
