- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning. Happy Friday. Headlines are brought to you by
- 0:09Speaker 2: Frost Brewed Coors Light. As cold as the Rockies, the
- 0:12Speaker 2: Mariners are done. Officially eliminated even before they lost yet
- 0:16Speaker 2: again last night at home to the Angels. Yep, the
- 0:19Speaker 2: team that was a favorite to represent the American League
- 0:21Speaker 2: in the World Series is 11 games under. 500 and
- 0:24Speaker 2: better be headed for changes. Cal Raleigh thinks so. You're
- 0:28Speaker 2: going to hear from him in a minute. Sam Donald,
- 0:30Speaker 2: full go at practice yesterday. A strong sign he's going
- 0:32Speaker 2: to start a quarterback for the Seahawks on Sunday at Washington.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Nick Emanwuri, full go. Ernest Jones and Brady Russell had
- 0:39Speaker 2: mispracticed on Wednesday. They were full go yesterday. But now
- 0:43Speaker 2: the team has a Julian Love issue. The veteran Pro
- 0:45Speaker 2: Bowl safety hasn't practiced this week. He's got a new
- 0:48Speaker 2: calf injury. Running back Jadarian Price limited again by that
- 0:52Speaker 2: shoulder injury, though he did practice. He has practiced the
- 0:55Speaker 2: two days this week. The game injury report is due
- 0:57Speaker 2: out at 1 o'clock, and I'm going to talk to
- 0:59Speaker 2: Mike McDonald right after that, and we'll know more about
- 1:02Speaker 2: Julian Love's status. So in with one safety, out still
- 1:06Speaker 2: with two, because Ty Okada hasn't practiced in three weeks
- 1:09Speaker 2: with a hamstring injury. San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick
- 1:12Speaker 2: Bosa suffered a calf injury in practice yesterday. He's expected
- 1:16Speaker 2: to be out a couple weeks, sources have told ESPN
- 1:19Speaker 2: and NFL Network. Bosa will not play Sunday when the
- 1:24Speaker 2: 49ers play the Cardinals. And the 49ers are trying to
- 1:26Speaker 2: determine whether the five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman needs to
- 1:29Speaker 2: be placed on injured reserve. More injuries for the 49ers.
- 1:34Speaker 2: University of Washington Huskies host Minnesota in a Big Ten
- 1:36Speaker 2: opener tomorrow night at 8 p.m. kickoff at Husky Stadium
- 1:39Speaker 2: right here on 93.3 KJR FM. Oklahoma and Georgia in
- 1:42Speaker 2: the SEC is at 1230 tomorrow on KJR FM. Sunday,
- 1:47Speaker 2: KJR schedule is Raiders at Saints at 125, Rams at
- 1:49Speaker 2: Broncos 520 live right here. On KJRFM. Last night, the
- 1:54Speaker 2: Kraken preseason game at Climate Pledge Arena became a fight night.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 1:59Speaker 2: They were fighting all over the place. First of all,
- 2:01Speaker 2: Calgary's Chase Harrington laid out Chandler Stevenson. Then Vince Dunn,
- 2:06Speaker 2: Josh Mahura, Bobby McMahon all got into fights after that.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Guess who the Kraken opened with in six days? The
- 2:14Speaker 2: NHL opener. The Calgary Flames. Yep. In Calgary.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I think they were just setting the table.
- 2:20Speaker 2: There'll be something out of that, I'm sure.
- 2:24Speaker 3: That's why people like hockey, is because it's a part.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Of the game. It is accepted, isn't it? The linesmen
- 2:29Speaker 2: just stand around and wait and watch until they fall
- 2:31Speaker 2: to the ice. Like, all right, that's enough, that's enough.
- 2:33Speaker 2: But they don't until they fall to the ice. They'll
- 2:36Speaker 2: just let them fight. And then when they get to
- 2:38Speaker 2: the ice, then they just step in. Kraken's final preseason
- 2:40Speaker 2: game is tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Vancouver on 950
- 2:42Speaker 2: KJR AM. And the opener will be Thursday at Calgary
- 2:46Speaker 2: right here on KJRFM. The Sounders, they host Minnesota tomorrow,
- 2:49Speaker 2: 5.30 tomorrow, on the Sounders iHeartRadio app. Not on KJRFM
- 2:54Speaker 2: because we're going to have the Husky pregame.
- 2:55Speaker 3: SeattleSoccer.com as well.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Thank you for that. And not on KJRFM because we'll
- 3:00Speaker 2: have the Husky-Homps pregame show starting at 4 p.m. from
- 3:02Speaker 2: Husky Stadium with Dave Softy-Maller and the gang before kickoff
- 3:05Speaker 2: at 8 of Husky's Gophers. Now on with the Friday show.
- 3:13Speaker 2: This is football.
- 3:14Speaker 1: This is a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 3:17Speaker 2: This crowd is going nuts.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Football Fridays are brought to you by Washington's Beef Farmers
- 3:24Speaker 1: and Ranchers.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It's Football Friday with Greg Bell on your home.
- 3:31Speaker 2: For the NFL.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yes, happy Friday. Thanks to our Washington State Beef Farmers
- 3:42Speaker 2: and Ranchers. We're sponsoring our football Fridays, a big football Friday,
- 3:47Speaker 2: another big weekend. Greg Bell, the News Tribune, and Jessamyn
- 3:50Speaker 2: McIntyre with you here at the Elliott Bay Studios in Seattle.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Good morning, ma'am. Good morning. It's better to see in person.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I know.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I've missed you. You've been all over the place.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Thank you. I am so tempted to tell the listening
- 4:02Speaker 2: audience what you did last night at the Mariners Park.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You can. You do? Can I? Absolutely. Jessamyn McIntyre walked
- 4:10Speaker 2: into the press box right at first pitch, into the
- 4:12Speaker 2: radio booth. And presented Rick Riz with a bouquet of roses.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And lilies. Pardon me.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And hydrangeas.
- 4:20Speaker 2: And hydrangeas. Thank you. Let's not slight roses and hydrangeas
- 4:24Speaker 2: and lilies.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Yes.
- 4:26Speaker 2: But it was a beautiful arrangement. And just tell the
- 4:31Speaker 2: listeners what Rick Riz's reaction was.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Well, he just was so grateful. And he's just always
- 4:37Speaker 5: been so great to me. He'll be on, actually, this
- 4:40Speaker 5: afternoon with Softie and Dick at 420.
- 4:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Everyone tune in for that.
- 4:45Speaker 5: But I am going to be in Pullman this weekend,
- 4:48Speaker 5: so I will not be there for his farewell weekend.
- 4:50Speaker 5: And I wanted to see him beforehand. And I told
- 4:54Speaker 5: him that if I had a flower for every single
- 4:57Speaker 5: time he was kind to me, there would be no
- 4:59Speaker 5: seats in the stadium. And it's true. Rick Riz is
- 5:03Speaker 5: an amazing human being. And I wanted to present him
- 5:06Speaker 5: with something very nice. Shout out to Stadium Flowers up
- 5:09Speaker 5: in Edmonds, because that's where I go for all of
- 5:12Speaker 5: my important flowers. And they had this beautiful arrangement and
- 5:16Speaker 5: I just spoke to me.
- 5:18Speaker 3: So I brought that to Rick and shout out to
- 5:21Speaker 3: Kevin Martinez.
- 5:22Speaker 5: And I felt I felt bad because traffic was terrible
- 5:25Speaker 5: getting down there. And so I didn't get up there
- 5:28Speaker 5: before first pitch. I got there right at first pitch.
- 5:31Speaker 5: So I said, oh, I'm just going to wait over
- 5:34Speaker 5: here in the press box area because I am credentialed
- 5:37Speaker 5: to be there. And I had already cleared it with
- 5:39Speaker 5: people because I had tickets to the game. My husband
- 5:42Speaker 5: and I were going, but I was like, is it
- 5:43Speaker 5: okay if I use my credential just to do this?
- 5:46Speaker 5: And everyone was so gracious about it. Of course you can.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Kidding me?
- 5:51Speaker 5: And then I saw Kevin Martinez when I was walking
- 5:54Speaker 5: in and he's like, just sit.
- 5:56Speaker 3: In the back of the booth.
- 5:57Speaker 7: The president of the Mariners.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 5:59Speaker 5: By the way, the person who makes that experience along
- 6:03Speaker 5: with his incredible staff, the baseball experience at the stadium
- 6:06Speaker 5: is He's the one who has been doing that for
- 6:09Speaker 5: many years. Anyway, he just told me to sit in
- 6:12Speaker 5: the back of the booth. And I had friends who
- 6:13Speaker 5: were in there, too. And I got to see him
- 6:15Speaker 5: in between the top of the first and bottom.
- 6:19Speaker 3: And he was just really grateful.
- 6:22Speaker 5: And I thought that was a very important thing to
- 6:25Speaker 5: do for the time that he has spent with me,
- 6:30Speaker 5: you know, coming on air, just being so kind. And
- 6:34Speaker 5: I'm going to miss him very, very much.
- 6:37Speaker 2: For those that want to know what the quality of
- 6:38Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre is.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'm not.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I know that's not what you're saying. I know I'm
- 6:44Speaker 2: bragging on you. I know that you're not. I'm just
- 6:46Speaker 2: saying I'm pointing out not everyone would do that. And
- 6:50Speaker 2: the sentiment you mentioned about there would be so many
- 6:53Speaker 2: flowers to fill the entire stadium and every seat there
- 6:56Speaker 2: wouldn't be any fans. You wrote that in a card.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I did, and hopefully he read it.
- 7:01Speaker 2: When you told me that last night, I was blown away,
- 7:03Speaker 2: and I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that you— Right,
- 7:05Speaker 2: this is what I do! Yeah, well, not everyone does,
- 7:08Speaker 2: so that's why I wanted to bring it up. Okay,
- 7:10Speaker 2: you are right. Maybe not everyone does, but I'm not—
- 7:12Speaker 2: Rick Riz, as we all know, does way more than
- 7:14Speaker 2: broadcast baseball games. For the last 41 years in Seattle,
- 7:18Speaker 2: he's done way more than that. And his impact on
- 7:21Speaker 2: the community— The community, the openness he gives, the time
- 7:26Speaker 2: he gives, the money he gives, the money he raises
- 7:28Speaker 2: for disadvantaged youth, for youth in trouble, for adults. I mean,
- 7:35Speaker 2: it's become better known here in the last year, his
- 7:38Speaker 2: farewell tour about Rick Riz far more than Mariners baseball.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Just wish the damn Mariners had a better season to
- 7:45Speaker 2: send him out with.
- 7:46Speaker 8: For him, yes.
- 7:49Speaker 2: On the show today, I got a postscript of the
- 7:50Speaker 2: Mike McDonald, Sean Payton, Graham Benziger soap opera I want
- 7:53Speaker 2: to mention. I'm not going to bring it up. I
- 7:55Speaker 2: just want to pass along something that come to my attention. Okay.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And Sam Darnold's season and his career is certainly you
- 8:03Speaker 2: turned in the right direction in the last week and
- 8:05Speaker 2: a half. You're going to hear from Sam Darnold and
- 8:07Speaker 2: what he was fearing the worst. I mean, like career altering,
- 8:11Speaker 2: Bo Jackson hip ending thing. He was worried about that night.
- 8:16Speaker 2: On the opener, you're going to hear from Sam Darnold.
- 8:18Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, our weekly high school football showcase. This week,
- 8:21Speaker 2: the featured game is Bothell and Woodinville in the North Shore.
- 8:23Speaker 2: We'll talk live at 11 o'clock with Bothell legendary coach
- 8:27Speaker 2: Tom Bainter and at 11.15 with Woodinville coach Wayne Maxwell
- 8:31Speaker 2: before they play tonight. We do that every Friday. We
- 8:35Speaker 2: pick a game. We pick some coaches. We try to
- 8:36Speaker 2: spread it around to different classifications, to different areas of
- 8:40Speaker 2: the state. Now it's Western Washington Central. I will admit that.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But we are– we'll maybe get over on the east
- 8:47Speaker 2: side here sometime. But tonight, Bothell and Woodinville play. We'll
- 8:50Speaker 2: talk to both the coaches at 11 o'clock. 11.30, read
- 8:53Speaker 2: back your texts and your talkbacks on the Tacoma Dodge
- 8:55Speaker 2: text line 49451, the talkbacks on the iHeartRadio app or
- 8:58Speaker 2: our website, 933KJRCon. The red microphone button, leave a 30-second
- 9:02Speaker 2: or shorter message, and Jessamyn will play that to her
- 9:04Speaker 2: heart's delight. And then 11.35, Factor Fiction brought to you
- 9:08Speaker 2: by Lucky Eagle Casino in a hotel, the last one
- 9:11Speaker 2: of the week for us. Your chance to win $ 1, 000
- 9:12Speaker 2: in a weekly prize. or $ 10, 000 if you keep winning
- 9:17Speaker 2: over and over again until December 11th. And Ian Furness
- 9:19Speaker 2: will join us from 12 until 3. Tell us what
- 9:21Speaker 2: he's got on this Washington State Beef Ranchers and Farmers
- 9:25Speaker 2: Football Friday. But first, I wanted to start the show
- 9:28Speaker 2: today with Cal Raleigh. The Mariners leader talked at length
- 9:31Speaker 2: in the dugout yesterday, soon after the M's were officially
- 9:34Speaker 2: eliminated from the playoffs. This is Cal Raleigh yesterday on
- 9:38Speaker 2: the most disappointing season in the 50 years of Mariner baseball.
- 9:41Speaker 6: Rangers win today and eliminate you guys from the postseason.
- 9:44Speaker 6: I know it was a slim chance already.
- 9:45Speaker 9: You guys have probably already been assessing it, but now
- 9:48Speaker 9: that it's happened, what are your thoughts about the season
- 9:52Speaker 9: and being.
- 9:53Speaker 6: Here right now talking about that? Yeah, I mean, it's disappointing.
- 10:01Speaker 9: We definitely didn't deserve to make the playoffs.
- 10:07Speaker 7: Just frustrating year in general.
- 10:10Speaker 6: A lot of areas to improve in.
- 10:14Speaker 9: Yeah, just ultimately sucks because he failed, but.
- 10:20Speaker 2: You know, got to accept it and.
- 10:21Speaker 6: You know, try to write the show.
- 10:25Speaker 8: That was so different.
- 10:26Speaker 9: If you could pinpoint a few things, if you look
- 10:28Speaker 9: back at the last season or this season.
- 10:30Speaker 7: What went wrong in your mind?
- 10:32Speaker 10: What did you see that made a difference for you guys?
- 10:36Speaker 9: Yeah, I just think the, you know, I think there's
- 10:42Speaker 9: a lot of areas you can point to.
- 10:45Speaker 10: I think Ultimately, I think it was.
- 10:48Speaker 9: A lack of focus, a lack of execution, a lack of,
- 10:53Speaker 9: you know.
- 10:56Speaker 6: Say energy at times.
- 10:59Speaker 9: And then you can kind of pull that in with,
- 11:02Speaker 9: you know, defense was not good all year.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Controlling the running game was not good all year. Playing
- 11:08Speaker 6: bad on the road all year. You know, hitting and.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Runners to scoring position. Hitting with runners to scoring position
- 11:21Speaker 6: was definitely not good.
- 11:24Speaker 9: You know, I'd say those were kind of some key
- 11:28Speaker 9: points that I kind of look at.
- 11:31Speaker 6: Did that surprise you? How many things went wrong this year?
- 11:35Speaker 9: Yeah. I mean, obviously, we were kind of riding high
- 11:40Speaker 9: off of last year. And somewhere along the way, things
- 11:44Speaker 9: just didn't click, didn't work. come together and we were
- 11:48Speaker 9: never able to ride the ship. That's the frustrating part.
- 11:53Speaker 9: I thought we would be able to get there.
- 11:55Speaker 6: We just never did.
- 11:58Speaker 8: We never got better.
- 11:58Speaker 9: We never turned it around. That's frustrating. But it's a
- 12:06Speaker 9: learning point that we're all going to have to take
- 12:09Speaker 9: accountability for and understand. You know, If it happens, you know, once,
- 12:18Speaker 9: it's one too many times.
- 12:19Speaker 10: If it happens again, it becomes a habit.
- 12:21Speaker 9: So it's just about changing that and, you know, make
- 12:25Speaker 9: sure you turn it around.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Kyle Raleigh yesterday, after the most disappointing Mariners season officially
- 12:34Speaker 2: became over. I mean, they got three games left, but
- 12:37Speaker 2: come on. They've been eliminated from the playoffs, a team
- 12:39Speaker 2: that was favored to go to the World Series. That
- 12:41Speaker 2: was eight outs away from going to their first World
- 12:44Speaker 2: Series last year. And when Cal Raleigh, their leader, says
- 12:47Speaker 2: we definitely didn't deserve to make the playoffs, that pretty
- 12:52Speaker 2: much sums it up. So does this. He said that
- 12:54Speaker 2: there was a lack of focus, a lack of execution,
- 12:57Speaker 2: a lack of energy. Where does that start? We've talked
- 13:02Speaker 2: about this. The Mariners are a collection of talent with
- 13:05Speaker 2: no leadership. And that starts at the very top of
- 13:08Speaker 2: the baseball operations at Jerry DiPoto. And that goes to
- 13:10Speaker 2: Justin Hollander. And that goes to the bench manager, Dan Wilson.
- 13:14Speaker 2: who was hired to do everything Justin Hollander and Jerry
- 13:18Speaker 2: DiPoto tell him to do as a first-time manager. It
- 13:21Speaker 2: also falls upon the players who don't have leadership, and
- 13:24Speaker 2: there's no kick-ass guy in that clubhouse. We've talked about that.
- 13:27Speaker 2: And even Cal Raleigh as a leader is not the
- 13:29Speaker 2: kick-ass guy that'll turn over a clubhouse table or just
- 13:33Speaker 2: basically bench teammates themselves for non-performance. When Cal Raleigh talks
- 13:38Speaker 2: about how disappointing they were as execution and not controlling
- 13:44Speaker 2: the running game and not hitting with runners in scoring position,
- 13:47Speaker 2: not having a focus. When I hear not having a focus,
- 13:51Speaker 2: I think of Julio Rodriguez throwing live balls into the
- 13:54Speaker 2: stands with one or two outs. I think of Randy
- 13:58Speaker 2: Rosarino running on a 3-2 pitch with one out thinking
- 14:01Speaker 2: there were two outs and ruining a rally. I think
- 14:04Speaker 2: of Josh Naylor not running out a ground ball to
- 14:07Speaker 2: second base that got kicked by the second baseman for
- 14:09Speaker 2: the A's. and then unshoveled a second base thinking that
- 14:12Speaker 2: was the only play to force out. And the source
- 14:14Speaker 2: stopped looking up and seeing that Josh Naylor's not even
- 14:17Speaker 2: halfway down the line because he's walking out of the
- 14:19Speaker 2: batter's box. I was at the game watching that happen
- 14:21Speaker 2: a couple weeks ago. That's what I think about. That's
- 14:25Speaker 2: on the players. And that's not Dan Wilson's fault. Those
- 14:29Speaker 2: players are professionals that get paid tens of millions of
- 14:32Speaker 2: dollars to do the bare minimum, and at times they
- 14:34Speaker 2: didn't even do the bare minimum. And there was nobody
- 14:36Speaker 2: from Jerry DiPoto on down who held them accountable for that.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Julio Rodriguez should have been benched multiple times this year.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Josh Naylor should have been benched, but makes $ 90 million.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Julio Rodriguez makes $ 200 million. So they weren't benched. And
- 14:54Speaker 2: that sent a message to the entire team that that
- 14:57Speaker 2: was okay. That mental lapses and checking out and not
- 15:00Speaker 2: trying was okay. And that's not okay. And there needs
- 15:05Speaker 2: to be somebody, whether it's professional, college, or high school,
- 15:08Speaker 2: or youth, there needs to be somebody in a sports...
- 15:11Speaker 2: organization somewhere that says, no, we're not going to accept that.
- 15:16Speaker 2: We're going to send a message that if you do that,
- 15:18Speaker 2: you don't play. And that never happened. And the play
- 15:21Speaker 2: continued to go down and nobody was there to stop
- 15:25Speaker 2: it because nobody had any accountability to stop it because
- 15:28Speaker 2: nobody has a buck stops here mentality in the franchise. Meanwhile,
- 15:34Speaker 2: they drew 37,000 people a night Jimothy showed up, hot
- 15:38Speaker 2: dogs from heaven rained down from the skies, fireworks and
- 15:42Speaker 2: bobbleheads rained, and the baseball operation flourished. They're in the
- 15:45Speaker 2: top half of the league in revenue. They're in the
- 15:48Speaker 2: bottom half of the league in spending on player payroll.
- 15:51Speaker 2: They collect luxury tax revenue from the other teams that
- 15:54Speaker 2: are winning, the Yankees, the Dodgers, the Red Sox, the Cubs,
- 15:58Speaker 2: that are all going to the playoffs. While the Mariners
- 16:01Speaker 2: of the bottom line franchise succeed because they're worried about
- 16:05Speaker 2: making money because they have 25 owners to please. And
- 16:09Speaker 2: the bottom line of those 25 owners is, is this
- 16:12Speaker 2: a profitable return on our investment? And the answer is yes.
- 16:16Speaker 2: And that's why everything stays status quo. Baseball operations is broken.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Business operations is flourishing. And when you have 25 owners,
- 16:23Speaker 2: the business operation wins. And that's really the bottom line
- 16:26Speaker 2: as succinctly as I can put it to where the
- 16:28Speaker 2: Mariners stand right now. Will they change? Everyone knows they
- 16:31Speaker 2: have to change. Will they change? 49451, the changes you
- 16:35Speaker 2: want to see pronto, like in today, like in the
- 16:38Speaker 2: day after the season ends on Sunday to this franchise.
- 16:41Speaker 2: What do you want? Dan Wilson's not going to be back.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I don't think he even has to be fired because
- 16:45Speaker 2: I think he's going to say, thanks, guys. I did
- 16:47Speaker 2: what you asked me to do, but I'm done. I
- 16:48Speaker 2: think he's had enough. Yeah, he's had enough.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Yeah, and I mean, that is no shade on Dan
- 16:53Speaker 5: Wilson either, but I think he's been through enough.
- 16:56Speaker 2: He's done. He's done. He was done like two months ago.
- 17:01Speaker 2: And whether he's been neutered or just doesn't want to
- 17:03Speaker 2: do anything to change, I don't know that. I've been
- 17:06Speaker 2: with the Seahawks the last few months, and I don't
- 17:08Speaker 2: know whether Dan Wilson tried to change things, tried to
- 17:12Speaker 2: bench guys and was told no. I suspect not. I
- 17:16Speaker 2: don't know if Jerry DiPoto is– it would be something
- 17:20Speaker 2: if Dan Wilson said, we're benching Jorge Rodriguez because he
- 17:23Speaker 2: threw the ball into the stands in Milwaukee with one
- 17:26Speaker 2: out in a 19-1 game or whatever it was at
- 17:28Speaker 2: the time. And Jerry Post said, no, you can't do that.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I don't believe that happened. But I think Dan Wilson
- 17:35Speaker 2: checked out long ago and he's done. And he won't
- 17:39Speaker 2: have to be fired because I think he's going to resign.
- 17:41Speaker 2: And I think that because of his status as one
- 17:43Speaker 2: of the Hall of Famers of the franchise, they won't
- 17:45Speaker 2: even get to the point of saying he was fired
- 17:47Speaker 2: or terminated or we've gone in a different direction. I
- 17:50Speaker 2: think it will be one of those mutual agreed or
- 17:53Speaker 2: maybe on his part resigned. But I would submit the
- 17:57Speaker 2: changes need to start a lot higher than that. and
- 18:00Speaker 2: they need to start at the president of baseball operations.
- 18:04Speaker 2: He's had 12 seasons now, 11 seasons here. Nine of
- 18:07Speaker 2: them have not been in the playoffs. Ten of them
- 18:09Speaker 2: have not been a division championship. There are not a
- 18:12Speaker 2: lot of sports franchises in North America who will have
- 18:15Speaker 2: that failure rate. It would still hire the man in
- 18:18Speaker 2: charge of the operation of the sport. That's a fact.
- 18:22Speaker 2: But the dichotomy again here is that as a business enterprise,
- 18:27Speaker 2: it's flourishing. They are profitable. They are attracting a lot
- 18:31Speaker 2: of customers. They are popular in park experiences. Jessamyn and
- 18:35Speaker 2: I have talked about many times. And as a baseball operation,
- 18:39Speaker 2: for what you're actually truly paying for, they're failing. 49451,
- 18:43Speaker 2: how you feel about all of this? What changes would
- 18:46Speaker 2: you like to have happen with the Mariners? They could
- 18:50Speaker 2: start as soon as Monday. That's how baseball kind of works.
- 18:53Speaker 2: That's how sports work. They do it as soon as
- 18:55Speaker 2: the season ends so they can then get a head
- 18:57Speaker 2: start on getting the next guy. Which brings a whole
- 19:00Speaker 2: other load of questions. If the same people are in charge,
- 19:04Speaker 2: the president of baseball operations and the general manager, how
- 19:08Speaker 2: are they going to get a manager in here that
- 19:10Speaker 2: would change what happened this year? What manager in their
- 19:13Speaker 2: right mind who would have the gravitas, as our friend
- 19:16Speaker 2: Larry Stone has said multiple times on this station the
- 19:19Speaker 2: last couple months, would have the gravitas to change the
- 19:22Speaker 2: culture and the accountability in the clubhouse?
- 19:25Speaker 5: It's interesting, too, because you're not getting these– I don't know, older,
- 19:31Speaker 5: I don't want to just name anyone, but you're getting
- 19:33Speaker 5: younger managers who have either no experience or are up-and-comers,
- 19:40Speaker 5: and you're not getting these guys who can just kind
- 19:44Speaker 5: of kick ass.
- 19:46Speaker 3: And that's just the way of most of modern coaching
- 19:49Speaker 3: and professionalism.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Sports right now yes that is so i don't know
- 19:54Speaker 5: who'd be the perfect person you're not going to get
- 19:56Speaker 5: another lupinella no you're just not going and you're probably not.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Even going to get a joe madden yeah another great
- 20:02Speaker 2: example another world series champion manager who would say wait
- 20:05Speaker 2: a minute you want me to play ipad baseball You
- 20:08Speaker 2: want me to do this handedness? You want to bring
- 20:10Speaker 2: in a 160 hitter when my gut tells me I'm
- 20:12Speaker 2: going to leave the guy in that I started just
- 20:14Speaker 2: because they brought in a left-handed pitcher I'm going to
- 20:15Speaker 2: have to change? I have to do that because you're
- 20:18Speaker 2: telling me that from up on high in a 300 level,
- 20:20Speaker 2: a 200 suite level?
- 20:20Speaker 6: Uh-uh.
- 20:22Speaker 3: So if Dan Wilson isn't there, who is?
- 20:25Speaker 2: Correct.
- 20:26Speaker 3: It's really, I'm boggled.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Correct. Is Jamie Moyer about to be the next manager
- 20:31Speaker 2: of the Mariners? I mean, that would be an equivalent hire,
- 20:33Speaker 2: would it not? Somebody who has absolutely no baseball experience,
- 20:36Speaker 2: who is a popular Mariner figure in Mariner history. Is
- 20:41Speaker 2: Edgar Martinez about to be the next Mariner manager? Is
- 20:44Speaker 2: Joey Cora?
- 20:46Speaker 3: I think, yeah, we've looked at those before just because
- 20:49Speaker 3: of what they do.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Is Mark McLemore? Who's going to be the next Mariner?
- 20:53Speaker 2: A very popular guy. Mike Cameron. Mike Cameron. Somebody who
- 20:57Speaker 2: has never done it before, who would agree to do
- 20:59Speaker 2: iPad baseball exactly as the front office demands. Is that
- 21:02Speaker 2: what's going to happen? Because it's happened twice in a row.
- 21:05Speaker 2: It's happened in all 11 years that Jerry DePoto has
- 21:07Speaker 2: been the president of baseball operations. So got service, never
- 21:10Speaker 2: managed before. Had a relationship with DePoto and the Angels.
- 21:14Speaker 3: He's a bench coach. You know, yeah.
- 21:16Speaker 5: All the people that we have mentioned have some experience
- 21:19Speaker 5: in it, but never a manager.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Yes. Maybe not Jamie Moyer. Maybe not. I only think
- 21:25Speaker 2: of some others that are just.
- 21:27Speaker 3: I just remember Jamie coaching.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Jay Buhner. Is Jay Buhner the next manager?
- 21:31Speaker 5: Honestly, he'd be the best one of everyone that we mentioned.
- 21:36Speaker 5: But they won't hire him because he'd be like, bleep you.
- 21:40Speaker 3: I'm doing it my way. But maybe they need that.
- 21:44Speaker 2: They need a Joe Maddon or somebody like that who
- 21:46Speaker 2: would be their own manager to manage their own baseball
- 21:49Speaker 2: game by their own baseball instincts and what their gut
- 21:51Speaker 2: and their heart and their minds and their eyes tell them.
- 21:54Speaker 2: That has not happened. A manager who would manage based
- 21:59Speaker 2: on what their eyes and their heart tells them would
- 22:01Speaker 2: have benched players for what happened this year, which never happened. Never.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It didn't happen. And that has, as much as many
- 22:11Speaker 2: of all the problems the Mariners have had, that's a
- 22:13Speaker 2: huge one. If you have talent without leadership, you get
- 22:16Speaker 2: what the 2026 Mariners became. Probably the most glaring example
- 22:22Speaker 2: of my sports writing career. I've been doing this since 1999,
- 22:26Speaker 2: and I've never seen a franchise have this much talent
- 22:29Speaker 2: wasted because of a lack of leadership. And lack of
- 22:33Speaker 2: leadership showed up almost every night. And we got to
- 22:36Speaker 2: see like 160 examples of it so far this year. 49451,
- 22:41Speaker 2: I am interested to hear what your thoughts are and
- 22:43Speaker 2: what you think the Mariners should do to change this.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Who should go? Who should stay? Who they should bring in?
- 22:49Speaker 2: Give me someone with managerial experience who has a track
- 22:51Speaker 2: record of changing culture, clubhouses, and performance, please. Although it's
- 22:56Speaker 2: very hard to get those guys. Another question is, baseball
- 22:59Speaker 2: circles know baseball people. What baseball manager with gravitas would
- 23:04Speaker 2: be willing to come into the same operation Dan Wilson
- 23:06Speaker 2: just exited? Why would Joe Madden, I'm just throwing that
- 23:10Speaker 2: off the top of my head, why would a Joe
- 23:12Speaker 2: Madden agree to come here if the same baseball ownership
- 23:15Speaker 2: and baseball operations leaders are still here? That's another question.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Anyone looking from afar going, wait a minute, how could
- 23:24Speaker 2: I go from a team that was eight hours from
- 23:26Speaker 2: the World Series and then goes 11 games under. 500
- 23:27Speaker 2: to How did that happen? And are those people that
- 23:31Speaker 2: made it happen still there? And if the answer is yes,
- 23:33Speaker 2: I'm not signing up for that. Something to think about.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Up next, Sam Darnold. He said yesterday he feared for
- 23:42Speaker 2: his career on September the 9th when he got injured
- 23:46Speaker 2: in his hip. He thought it was perhaps way more
- 23:49Speaker 2: than it became. And suddenly now, it looks like he's
- 23:52Speaker 2: going to start Sunday at Washington. You'll hear from the
- 23:54Speaker 2: Super Bowl winning quarterback next at 11 o'clock. Our high
- 23:57Speaker 2: school football weekly showcase is Bothell in Woodinville in a
- 24:01Speaker 2: backyard tussle tonight on the North Shore. You'll hear from
- 24:04Speaker 2: both coaches at 11 o'clock. 11.35 is your Factor Fiction
- 24:08Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and
- 24:11Speaker 2: Hotel all on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Welcome to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday with
- 24:24Speaker 1: Greg Bell on your.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Home for the NFL.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Hi, we're back on a Football Friday here on 93.3
- 24:38Speaker 2: KJR FM. We've got the Huskies at home tomorrow night
- 24:41Speaker 2: in the Big Ten opener at Husky Stadium against the
- 24:43Speaker 2: Minnesota Golden Gophers. We've got high school football tonight. We're
- 24:45Speaker 2: going to showcase that with Bothell and Woodinville's rivalry game
- 24:49Speaker 2: tonight on the North Shore. We'll talk to both of
- 24:51Speaker 2: those coaches at 11 o'clock. I'm going to board a
- 24:53Speaker 2: plane tomorrow morning and go to Washington, D.C. for the
- 24:56Speaker 2: Seahawks and the Commanders, 10 a.m. on Saturday. Justin McIntyre
- 25:00Speaker 2: is going to get on a plane and go to
- 25:01Speaker 2: Pullman for tomorrow, 4-15, Washington State hosting Arizona.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be a true challenge.
- 25:08Speaker 2: It's a national TV game on CBS tomorrow. It is.
- 25:11Speaker 7: It is.
- 25:11Speaker 5: I'll be running into all those camera trucks, which I
- 25:14Speaker 5: love to do.
- 25:15Speaker 2: On the spacious sidelines of Martin Stadium.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Well, on the opposite sideline these days, too.
- 25:20Speaker 2: That's true.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Hey, we get shade. Not that we'll need it at
- 25:23Speaker 3: a 4-15 kickoff.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Is there going to be even sun out tomorrow in Pullman?
- 25:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 25:29Speaker 5: It changes day to day, but I have comfies.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Sam Darnold practiced yesterday fully. For the first time since
- 25:37Speaker 2: his injury, his glute that he thought was way more
- 25:40Speaker 2: than a glute strain when Dremont Jones pulled him down
- 25:43Speaker 2: from behind in the fifth play of the season, September 9th.
- 25:47Speaker 2: You saw the hip, the body crashed down onto his
- 25:50Speaker 2: right hip. All the body weighed into the right hip.
- 25:51Speaker 2: You saw him limping off. What you didn't see is
- 25:53Speaker 2: he went to Harborview Medical Center during the game. He
- 25:57Speaker 2: didn't watch any except the last eight minutes of his game,
- 26:00Speaker 2: and he watched the last eight minutes of the game
- 26:02Speaker 2: on his phone from Harborview Medical Center. his eyes got
- 26:07Speaker 2: opened going to Harborview. He saw real life.
- 26:11Speaker 11: Feeling good, yeah. I think for me, especially during this week,
- 26:15Speaker 11: just taking it day by day, continuing to balance the
- 26:19Speaker 11: reps and do everything I need to get ready.
- 26:21Speaker 6: When we saw you leave.
- 26:21Speaker 12: The field in week one, we did not anticipate talking
- 26:24Speaker 12: to you so quickly after that. What was the wave
- 26:27Speaker 12: of emotions you went through in trying to process what happened?
- 26:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean.
- 26:32Speaker 11: A lot of different emotions, a lot of possibilities, like
- 26:36Speaker 11: in terms of how long I would be out and
- 26:39Speaker 11: possibilities of like different injuries. So just a lot of
- 26:43Speaker 11: emotions and a lot of thoughts, but, you know, very,
- 26:46Speaker 11: very happy to be here and standing in front of
- 26:48Speaker 11: you guys today.
- 26:49Speaker 8: How quickly did.
- 26:50Speaker 12: They give you the assurance that most of those worst
- 26:53Speaker 12: case scenario, that those worst case scenarios weren't on the table?
- 26:56Speaker 11: Um, yeah, it was, it was kind of after the,
- 26:59Speaker 11: after I got the CT scan. And you can take
- 27:02Speaker 11: a better look at the anatomy of the bone, the
- 27:07Speaker 11: hip bone. So that was kind of when the doc
- 27:10Speaker 11: brought the good news to me.
- 27:12Speaker 6: I mean, do you think you'll be able to play Sunday?
- 27:16Speaker 11: You know, I'm really striving for that. But, again, like
- 27:18Speaker 11: I said, you know, I'm just taking it day by day.
- 27:22Speaker 11: Also don't want to jinx anything.
- 27:23Speaker 6: How did your body and the injury area react to
- 27:27Speaker 6: practicing yesterday?
- 27:28Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, it felt good. Just obviously a little
- 27:31Speaker 11: bit of soreness, but it felt really good.
- 27:33Speaker 6: If I remember correctly, you didn't go into the medical
- 27:36Speaker 6: tent right away. It was, I think, a couple minutes.
- 27:38Speaker 8: Did you think that you were okay at first?
- 27:41Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, there's some things that happen on the
- 27:43Speaker 11: field that, you know, you get banged up a little
- 27:47Speaker 11: bit and something feels a little weird and feel weird
- 27:49Speaker 11: coming off to the sideline, and then you're able to
- 27:51Speaker 11: shake it off after a couple minutes on the sideline.
- 27:53Speaker 11: But it wasn't that way. You know, the pain just
- 27:55Speaker 11: kind of lingered and wasn't really able to throw. And
- 28:00Speaker 11: that was the main concern.
- 28:02Speaker 8: Sam, you've been in Drew's position in your career.
- 28:05Speaker 10: What's it been like to see what he's been able
- 28:06Speaker 10: to do?
- 28:07Speaker 6: Are you stepping up for you?
- 28:08Speaker 11: Yeah, it's unbelievable, man. Just, you know, and again, like
- 28:12Speaker 11: none of us in this building are surprised at what happened.
- 28:15Speaker 11: You know, he's a baller. Went out there, played really well.
- 28:18Speaker 11: And yeah, just very happy for him. And just, it
- 28:23Speaker 11: was cool. Just cool to see his process throughout the
- 28:26Speaker 11: week and how he attacked it and to go out there.
- 28:28Speaker 11: And like I said, perform the way that he did.
- 28:31Speaker 11: It was no surprise.
- 28:32Speaker 6: Have you had an injury like that before or in
- 28:34Speaker 6: that area before?
- 28:37Speaker 10: How close is it to the oblique injury you had last.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Year in the playoffs?
- 28:42Speaker 7: No, no, it's a little bit different.
- 28:44Speaker 11: Um, a little bit different.
- 28:46Speaker 6: What was the hospital experience like? Were you able to
- 28:48Speaker 6: watch the game?
- 28:50Speaker 11: I was able to watch the last like eight minutes
- 28:52Speaker 11: on my phone. Um, but yeah, it was different, really
- 28:57Speaker 11: different at Harborview. But, uh, It was, you know, just
- 29:03Speaker 11: I will say this, like just the perspective on life
- 29:06Speaker 11: that I got while going into the hospital, seeing some
- 29:08Speaker 11: of the people and what they're dealing with, like that
- 29:10Speaker 11: was eye-opening, especially in the position that I was in
- 29:14Speaker 11: worrying about the injury and how long I was going
- 29:17Speaker 11: to be out. It was good to get that perspective,
- 29:21Speaker 11: I guess.
- 29:21Speaker 13: There were some people speculating that depending on what kind
- 29:24Speaker 13: of injury, it might not just affect the season, it
- 29:26Speaker 13: might affect your career.
- 29:27Speaker 10: Was that in your mind at all?
- 29:29Speaker 11: Oh, yeah. Again, like I said, there was so many
- 29:33Speaker 11: different things that were running through my mind, and that
- 29:35Speaker 11: was one of them. Do you expect to increase your
- 29:37Speaker 11: reps today and tomorrow over what you did yesterday? Yeah,
- 29:40Speaker 11: I think the plan is to just continually increase the reps. And, yeah,
- 29:46Speaker 11: as long as I just keep feeling good and progressing
- 29:48Speaker 11: the way that I have been, continue to up the
- 29:51Speaker 11: reps throughout the week.
- 29:53Speaker 2: This perspective you said you saw in the hospital, did
- 29:56Speaker 2: you talk to anyone?
- 29:57Speaker 5: No, no, just.
- 29:59Speaker 11: Again, like I said, just seeing some of the people
- 30:01Speaker 11: and the pain that they're in and what different people
- 30:04Speaker 11: are dealing with when they're in the hospital.
- 30:06Speaker 2: It was just.
- 30:09Speaker 11: Because it's a trauma hospital, so there's a lot of
- 30:10Speaker 11: crazy stuff going on in there.
- 30:12Speaker 6: Did you come in through the emergency room?
- 30:14Speaker 2: No.
- 30:14Speaker 11: No, I didn't come in through the emergency room. They
- 30:16Speaker 11: took me in a little side alley.
- 30:18Speaker 6: What was it like seeing the end of the game?
- 30:20Speaker 6: I mean, you started a game, and then you're watching
- 30:22Speaker 6: the end of it on your phone.
- 30:23Speaker 7: What's that like?
- 30:25Speaker 3: It's not fun.
- 30:27Speaker 11: Um, I'll be straight up with you guys. Um, you know, it's,
- 30:30Speaker 11: it's tough to, to get hurt, but to see the
- 30:31Speaker 11: way that, again, like I said, Drew came in and, uh,
- 30:35Speaker 11: you know, how well he played and really just protected
- 30:38Speaker 11: the football. Um, I was very happy to see that.
- 30:40Speaker 13: Mike said it really took a drastic turn kind of
- 30:42Speaker 13: upward last week or, you know, the positive direction.
- 30:44Speaker 7: Did you kind of feel that as last week went along?
- 30:46Speaker 2: Absolutely. Yeah.
- 30:47Speaker 11: Just, uh, yeah, throughout the week, really after the injury,
- 30:52Speaker 11: like every single day, just the way that I've been
- 30:54Speaker 11: improving and getting better, um, has been great.
- 30:57Speaker 14: What's that mindset been like when obviously, like you said,
- 31:00Speaker 14: there's the perspective and going to the hospital and you're
- 31:02Speaker 14: thinking all the worst thoughts and then to hear that
- 31:04Speaker 14: it's not that, and you're going to be back. How
- 31:06Speaker 14: has that kind of affected your mindset and your enthusiasm
- 31:09Speaker 14: as you came back into the building?
- 31:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 11: You know that it obviously, you know, had a huge
- 31:15Speaker 11: impact of like potentially being out for the year to, okay,
- 31:19Speaker 11: it might be like, you know, it might only be
- 31:21Speaker 11: a few weeks or a couple of weeks, you know,
- 31:22Speaker 11: that changes your mindset drastically. So it was, uh, you know,
- 31:27Speaker 11: good little boost, I guess that I needed while, while
- 31:29Speaker 11: I was in there.
- 31:31Speaker 6: How did it.
- 31:31Speaker 10: Feel to be back out on the field after all
- 31:33Speaker 10: that and just letting it loose?
- 31:36Speaker 11: Yeah, it felt great just to, to get back out
- 31:38Speaker 11: there with my teammates, man. That's like the greatest joy.
- 31:41Speaker 11: I think, like I said, like getting that perspective and
- 31:43Speaker 11: being able to actually like come back, go back on
- 31:45Speaker 11: out on the field and be able to play football
- 31:48Speaker 11: with my teammates, be able to play football in general.
- 31:50Speaker 11: Like that's, you know, Being on the sideline against Arizona,
- 31:55Speaker 11: like I said, it was great to see Drew have
- 31:57Speaker 11: success and our team have success. But when I was
- 32:00Speaker 11: out there on the sideline, I missed playing a ton.
- 32:02Speaker 11: So it's just good to get back out on the
- 32:04Speaker 11: practice field this week and get out there.
- 32:07Speaker 6: What do you need to feel or think today, tomorrow,
- 32:10Speaker 6: to know you can play Sunday?
- 32:12Speaker 11: Yeah, I think just mentally having confidence, having confidence in
- 32:15Speaker 11: my body, being able to go out there. And if
- 32:18Speaker 11: I need to take off, feeling good about sliding and
- 32:23Speaker 11: just doing all the football things, worrying about playing football,
- 32:25Speaker 11: not worrying about the hip at all, just going out
- 32:29Speaker 11: there playing football, playing fast.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Will you try to take off running in practice to
- 32:33Speaker 2: test that or not until game?
- 32:35Speaker 11: Yeah, I'll just play every play as its own, and
- 32:37Speaker 11: if I have to take off running, just take off
- 32:40Speaker 11: and play ball.
- 32:42Speaker 10: What's the rehab look like on your end in terms
- 32:43Speaker 10: of what are you addressing? Is it muscular?
- 32:45Speaker 8: Is it tightness?
- 32:46Speaker 10: What are you trying to get at?
- 32:48Speaker 11: Yeah, it's really the whole hip. You know, when you
- 32:51Speaker 11: have an injury to your hip or anywhere, all the
- 32:54Speaker 11: muscles around that area tighten up a little bit. So
- 32:57Speaker 11: just really continuing to keep it loose and strong, making
- 33:02Speaker 11: sure that I'm good coming back.
- 33:04Speaker 13: You guys have people on defense that play all sorts
- 33:07Speaker 13: of different positions.
- 33:08Speaker 10: And, you know, it used to be you can kind
- 33:09Speaker 10: of count a nickel as a nickel.
- 33:11Speaker 13: What's it like for you as a quarterback now to
- 33:12Speaker 13: prepare for teams when they've got guys that kind of
- 33:15Speaker 13: play unique roles?
- 33:17Speaker 11: Yeah, for sure. You know, Washington is a great example.
- 33:22Speaker 11: Their coordinator, DJ, over there, I was with him in Minnesota,
- 33:24Speaker 11: and he's a great football mind. They've got a really
- 33:27Speaker 11: good scheme over there with really good players and, again,
- 33:29Speaker 11: some guys that can play different positions. It makes it tough.
- 33:34Speaker 11: It makes it challenging. But I think for us as
- 33:37Speaker 11: an offense, being able to have a clear mind of
- 33:39Speaker 11: IDing those looks and getting really good reps in practice
- 33:42Speaker 11: and in walkthroughs really helped with that prep.
- 33:46Speaker 13: Drew mentioned that he was kind of swimming a little
- 33:49Speaker 13: bit this time last week and you came up after
- 33:52Speaker 13: this press conference and met with you and you helped
- 33:55Speaker 13: him kind of get back to center.
- 33:57Speaker 10: What was that conversation like and what did you see
- 34:00Speaker 10: from him there?
- 34:02Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, it can be tough, right? Like, you know,
- 34:05Speaker 11: just trying to figure out, you know, Again, going back
- 34:10Speaker 11: to the last question, all the different looks that a
- 34:12Speaker 11: defense can bring and present to us, really just understanding
- 34:16Speaker 11: our problems as a quarterback and when we might be hot,
- 34:19Speaker 11: when we might have to get the ball out. And
- 34:21Speaker 11: so I think for us, we just got to go
- 34:24Speaker 11: play fast and keep it really simple. And so that's
- 34:27Speaker 11: kind of all I told him was this is when
- 34:31Speaker 11: we have a problem, this is when we don't. And
- 34:35Speaker 11: what are our solutions when we do have a problem
- 34:36Speaker 11: and just going from there.
- 34:38Speaker 14: What was it like to experience the JSN show last
- 34:41Speaker 14: week as more of an outside observer?
- 34:43Speaker 10: What was your perspective on his day?
- 34:45Speaker 11: Yeah, he's really good at football. JSN, he's a heck
- 34:48Speaker 11: of a player, man. Obviously, we have a ton of
- 34:51Speaker 11: really good players everywhere, but Jackson does a really good
- 34:54Speaker 11: job for us.
- 34:57Speaker 2: That was Sam Donald yesterday, and what struck me most
- 34:59Speaker 2: when my ears perked up most was when he said
- 35:02Speaker 2: he thought his career was affected. He's still only 29
- 35:05Speaker 2: years old, but that injury, Jessamyn, when it happened, when
- 35:07Speaker 2: I saw it live, I didn't think it was too bad.
- 35:10Speaker 2: And then I saw the replays of it, and at
- 35:13Speaker 2: the moment, I thought of Bo Jackson. Do you remember
- 35:16Speaker 2: him running down the sideline for the Raiders against the
- 35:18Speaker 2: Cincinnati Bengals in a playoff game in the.
- 35:20Speaker 8: Mid-' 90s?
- 35:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I didn't watch it live, but yes.
- 35:24Speaker 2: I watched it live, and the Bengals player came down
- 35:28Speaker 2: on his hip from behind and pulled his whole body
- 35:31Speaker 2: weight into the right hip and ruined his career. Pulled
- 35:35Speaker 2: the hip right out of the socket, the labrum and
- 35:37Speaker 2: all of that.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Which is a potential, yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 2: And I think Sam Darnold might have been thinking about
- 35:42Speaker 2: Bo Jackson. He knows that injury. All football players know that.
- 35:45Speaker 2: They've seen the clips of it a thousand times. It
- 35:48Speaker 2: changed Bo Jackson's career, and Sam Darnold thought that play
- 35:52Speaker 2: changed his career. And he was, until you heard him say,
- 35:55Speaker 2: until he got the CAT scan at Harborview Medical Center,
- 35:58Speaker 2: and then the MRI the next day that said, no,
- 36:00Speaker 2: there was no hip damage, no socket damage, and no
- 36:03Speaker 2: bone damage, he was worried.
- 36:06Speaker 3: I'd love to say the doctor giving him the good news.
- 36:08Speaker 6: Yes.
- 36:09Speaker 5: Yes.
- 36:09Speaker 2: So, yeah, there was some, when Mike McDonald said it
- 36:13Speaker 2: has drastically changed in the last week and a half,
- 36:15Speaker 2: that's what they mean. Darnold and the Seahawks thought it
- 36:18Speaker 2: might be a career-altering injury. Instead, he may only miss
- 36:22Speaker 2: one full game. He's fully participated yesterday. I'm expecting him
- 36:26Speaker 2: to be full go today, as long as he responded
- 36:28Speaker 2: well to yesterday. He may not even be on the
- 36:31Speaker 2: injury report for the game that is issued at 1
- 36:33Speaker 2: o'clock today. He might just be... Full go, no status.
- 36:37Speaker 3: No Q next to his name for questionable.
- 36:39Speaker 2: We are expecting no Julian Love to have questionable, if
- 36:42Speaker 2: not doubtful, because he hasn't practiced all week with a
- 36:45Speaker 2: new calf injury.
- 36:46Speaker 3: That one sucks.
- 36:47Speaker 2: We'll find that out at 1 o'clock. I'll have it
- 36:49Speaker 2: at thenewstribune.com soon after that. And my story up on
- 36:53Speaker 2: Sam Darnold and his fearing for his career is up
- 36:55Speaker 2: at thenewstribune.com right now as well. Up next, we'll talk
- 36:59Speaker 2: about our big football weekend where Jess and I are headed,
- 37:02Speaker 2: where I'm going tonight for... seeing the winningest high school
- 37:06Speaker 2: football coach in state history. I'm calling his game tonight
- 37:09Speaker 2: in West Seattle.
- 37:10Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Monty Kohler of O'Day High School. 11 o'clock. We're going
- 37:14Speaker 2: to talk to the backyard rivals that are going to
- 37:17Speaker 2: be playing tonight on the North Shore. Bothell and Woodinville,
- 37:19Speaker 2: the head coaches from both Bothell High School and Woodinville
- 37:21Speaker 2: High School. We'll talk to them at 11 o'clock. Tom
- 37:23Speaker 2: Boehner and Wayne Maxwell. 1135 Factor Fiction. It's my pick
- 37:28Speaker 2: in our last one of the week, your chance to
- 37:29Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. All
- 37:32Speaker 2: that's coming up on a Washington State Farmers and Ranchers,
- 37:35Speaker 2: Beef Farmers and Ranchers football Friday on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 37:54Speaker 1: with Greg Bell.
- 37:56Speaker 2: On your home for the NFL.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Welcome back to the show on a Friday, a football
- 38:07Speaker 2: Friday here in late September in the Pacific Northwest. Greg
- 38:10Speaker 2: Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre here on 93.3 KJR FM. And
- 38:15Speaker 2: that football weekend really gets started in two hours and
- 38:19Speaker 2: nine minutes, Jessamyn, because the Army team, the pride and
- 38:21Speaker 2: dream of every heart and gray, is playing at Temple
- 38:24Speaker 2: in Philadelphia at 1 p.m. Pacific time on ESPN. That's right. Army,
- 38:31Speaker 2: we took a minus three in fact or fiction.
- 38:33Speaker 3: All right, let me change this up for us.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Well, we don't have to because I can move on
- 38:37Speaker 2: to the next thing.
- 38:38Speaker 7: There we go.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Just for you, Greg.
- 38:43Speaker 2: Fight on to victory. That's the fearless Army way. Yes,
- 38:49Speaker 2: that's our Army fight song. Every time they score a touchdown,
- 38:52Speaker 2: maybe a field goal, but certainly a touchdown, we would
- 38:55Speaker 2: sing this song at West Point and at the Army-Navy
- 38:58Speaker 2: game in Philadelphia.
- 38:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Raw, raw, raw.
- 39:01Speaker 3: I heard it loud and proud.
- 39:03Speaker 5: I have certainly heard it.
- 39:05Speaker 2: You have learned it through me, haven't you?
- 39:06Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Tonight on the National Television Games, tonight on Fox 5 p.m.
- 39:11Speaker 2: is Northwestern at defending national champion Indiana. The late game
- 39:15Speaker 2: on college football tonight is Clemson at California on ESPN.
- 39:18Speaker 2: High school football tonight, Bothell and Woodinville in a backyard
- 39:22Speaker 2: brawl on the North Shore. We're going to talk to
- 39:23Speaker 2: Coach Tom Bainter, the legendary coach of Bothwell High School
- 39:26Speaker 2: at 11 o'clock, and then Wayne Maxwell, the coach at
- 39:30Speaker 2: Woodinville at 1115. I'm going to be in West Seattle
- 39:33Speaker 2: tonight at West Seattle Stadium for O'Day High School. Monty Kohler,
- 39:37Speaker 2: the winningest coach in Washington State football history. He is
- 39:42Speaker 2: the defending Class 3A state champion. Called that game for
- 39:46Speaker 2: KJR with Chris Kidd back in December and with Mike Benton.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Back in December at Husky Stadium, the defending state champion
- 39:52Speaker 2: O'Day fighting Irish are playing undefeated Rainier Beach. A battle
- 39:56Speaker 2: of 3-0 teams tonight. I'm going to be the back
- 39:58Speaker 2: judge in that game at West Seattle High School. Then tomorrow,
- 40:03Speaker 2: we've got college football. Of course, the Huskies are at
- 40:06Speaker 2: home at Husky Stadium at an 8 o'clock local start.
- 40:09Speaker 2: We're going to be back. I'll get on a plane
- 40:11Speaker 2: tomorrow at 7 a.m. to fly to D.C. for Seahawks
- 40:13Speaker 2: and Commanders, and we'll be watching a game.
- 40:15Speaker 3: And you'll still make it.
- 40:16Speaker 2: At 11 o'clock in Washington tomorrow night, we'll be watching
- 40:18Speaker 2: a game.
- 40:18Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what's always rough with those late-night West Coast
- 40:21Speaker 5: games is that for the East Coast viewing audience, which
- 40:24Speaker 5: is what they want, they want the big markets watching.
- 40:27Speaker 3: That is a rough schedule.
- 40:28Speaker 2: I'm told by the television executives in football that that
- 40:32Speaker 2: 10.30 p.m., 11.30, or 11 p.m. Eastern time is a
- 40:35Speaker 2: very well-watched window.
- 40:38Speaker 3: I mean, we are crazy in New York.
- 40:39Speaker 2: I came from there.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Bars are open until 4, Greg.
- 40:42Speaker 2: People watch that. Washington hosting Minnesota tomorrow night. The Husky-Honks
- 40:46Speaker 2: pregame show is at 4 o'clock here on KGR. Kickoff
- 40:49Speaker 2: with Elyse Woodward, Cam Cleland, and Dave Softy-Moller is at
- 40:52Speaker 2: 8 o'clock here on KGR tomorrow night. Jessamyn is getting
- 40:55Speaker 2: on a plane today to go over to Pullman.
- 40:58Speaker 3: Right after this.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Arizona at Washington State at Martin Stadium in Pullman at 4.15.
- 41:03Speaker 2: That's going to be on CBS Television Live. Ian Furness
- 41:07Speaker 2: just walked in in his Cougars hoodie.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Hey, I am wearing something very similar.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Big game in college football tomorrow. It starts at 9 a.m.
- 41:15Speaker 2: our time.
- 41:16Speaker 8: No.
- 41:16Speaker 2: 1 Texas is at No. 14 Tennessee. Remember in Factor
- 41:19Speaker 2: Fiction I took the Longhorns minus the 4.5. I like
- 41:23Speaker 2: that pick. Yeah, I think the Sarkeesians will win by
- 41:26Speaker 2: at least a touchdown there. And then the primetime games tomorrow.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Texas A & M at LSU. Oregon at USC on
- 41:32Speaker 2: NBC of National Interest. That's probably the two games that
- 41:37Speaker 2: are worth seeing in the evening before Minnesota at Washington.
- 41:40Speaker 2: And then on Sunday, what you got here locally is
- 41:44Speaker 2: going to be... Let's pull it up and make it
- 41:48Speaker 2: right here. Okay. On Cairo 7 on CBS, the NFL game,
- 41:52Speaker 2: you're going to get the early game on 10 a.m.
- 41:54Speaker 2: is Cincinnati at Pittsburgh. Ian's friend Ross Tucker and Jessamyn's
- 41:58Speaker 2: friend Ross Tucker will be on that call. And then
- 42:01Speaker 2: the CBS late game... is going to be Baltimore and
- 42:04Speaker 2: Dallas from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Jim Nance and J.J. Watt,
- 42:08Speaker 2: that's going to be shown here in Seattle. Of course,
- 42:11Speaker 2: on Fox, the 10 a.m. game is Seattle at Washington.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Seahawks fans, you're going to get Joe Davis and Greg
- 42:16Speaker 2: Olson on the call.
- 42:18Speaker 3: I like Greg.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Seahawks. Yeah, Greg Olson is an Emmy Award winning. He
- 42:22Speaker 2: should be the number one guy.
- 42:23Speaker 3: He got a lot of flack in his first season.
- 42:25Speaker 3: I'm like, I think he's really good.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Former Seahawks tight end at the end of his career,
- 42:28Speaker 2: but mostly Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears. He, of course,
- 42:31Speaker 2: was the number one Fox analyst until some guy named
- 42:34Speaker 2: Tom Brady decided to get into broadcasting. That's why he's
- 42:37Speaker 2: no longer.
- 42:37Speaker 3: He's got the number one jawline.
- 42:39Speaker 2: I'll give you that. Then the Sunday night game, the
- 42:41Speaker 2: Rams at the Broncos on NBC at 520 here on KJR.
- 42:46Speaker 2: The KJR afternoon game after the Seahawks game is the
- 42:49Speaker 2: 125 kickoff of the Raiders at the Saints. You can
- 42:51Speaker 2: hear that live here on 93.3. KJR, so that's your
- 42:55Speaker 2: football weekend. Jessamyn and I are going in different directions
- 42:58Speaker 2: and different sides.
- 42:59Speaker 3: Passing ships in the night.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Let's go. 49451, what are you looking forward to? We
- 43:04Speaker 2: have got a ton of text, by the way, about
- 43:06Speaker 2: the Mariners and what you would do. So let me
- 43:08Speaker 2: ask that question and re-ask that. The first question on
- 43:10Speaker 2: the text line today. What do the Mariners need to change?
- 43:13Speaker 2: What changes do you want to see, like now or
- 43:16Speaker 2: starting Monday after the season ends on Sunday? And then
- 43:19Speaker 2: the other question is, what are you looking forward to most? Huskies,
- 43:23Speaker 2: Big Ten opener at home, Minnesota pretty physical team. You're
- 43:27Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing the Seahawks going into Washington with
- 43:29Speaker 2: Sam Darnold apparently returning to be full-time, full-go, full-starting. Maybe
- 43:33Speaker 2: your high school football thing. Tell us what stadium you're
- 43:35Speaker 2: heading out to tonight.
- 43:37Speaker 3: The talkback's always welcome, too.
- 43:38Speaker 2: The talkback's on the iHeartRadio app or the KJR.com website.
- 43:42Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, right in a couple minutes here, at the
- 43:44Speaker 2: other side of this break, we're going to go live
- 43:47Speaker 2: to Bothell High School. Tom Bainter, the legendary coach at
- 43:50Speaker 2: Bothell High, he's hosting Woodinville tonight. We're going to talk
- 43:53Speaker 2: to both coaches, Tom Bainter of Bothell, Wayne Maxwell of Woodinville,
- 43:58Speaker 2: back-to-back on our High School Football Showcase weekly Friday edition
- 44:01Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. As part of our relentless coverage of
- 44:14Speaker 2: the NFL. This is football. This is football.
- 44:17Speaker 1: This is a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 44:21Speaker 2: This crowd is going nuts.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Football Fridays are brought to you by Washington's Beef Farmers
- 44:28Speaker 1: and Ranchers.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
- 44:31Speaker 1: It's Football Friday with Greg Bell on your home for
- 44:35Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Not to disagree with Vic,
- 44:44Speaker 2: but we're also home of the Huskies, who play tomorrow
- 44:47Speaker 2: night at 8 p.m. against Minnesota at Husky Stadium Live
- 44:50Speaker 2: here on KGR. We're also home for high school football
- 44:52Speaker 2: in Washington. We've got varsity football live tonight, 10 p.m.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Dick Fain's show, a scoreboard show from around the state,
- 45:00Speaker 2: telling you the results as they come in tonight live
- 45:03Speaker 2: from the games that, well, kick off around 5 o'clock
- 45:06Speaker 2: in some venues, like Edmonds-Woodway High School, where they have
- 45:09Speaker 2: doubleheaders each week, or Kent, where it The stadium down
- 45:12Speaker 2: in Kent has doubleheaders, as Frenchfield has doubleheaders as well.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Renton High School often has doubleheaders. Renton Memorial Stadium, I
- 45:20Speaker 2: should say, has doubleheaders. And tonight, Bothell and Woodinville are
- 45:24Speaker 2: playing a backyard brawl, a rivalry game. Pretty early in
- 45:29Speaker 2: the season for that. We're going to talk to both coaches.
- 45:32Speaker 2: I'm going to reset you real quick for what the
- 45:33Speaker 2: Seahawks got going on. Sam Donner was full go yesterday
- 45:36Speaker 2: at practice. All signs are that the quarterback is going
- 45:38Speaker 2: to return after missing just one full game. plus three
- 45:41Speaker 2: and a half quarters of the opener. It looks like
- 45:44Speaker 2: he's going to play from that strangle. You heard from
- 45:46Speaker 2: him last half hour about how he feared for his career.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Nick Vemanwary, full go. Looks like he's going to get
- 45:53Speaker 2: full snaps and full regular deal. Ty Okada, the starting safe.
- 45:57Speaker 2: He still hasn't practiced in three weeks because of the
- 45:59Speaker 2: hamstring issue, which we've talked about. They don't just go
- 46:01Speaker 2: away overnight. Looks like he's going to be listed as
- 46:04Speaker 2: out when the injury report comes out at one o'clock.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Jadarian Price, I'm expected to be questionable. He has been
- 46:10Speaker 2: limited in his practice this week by a shoulder injury
- 46:12Speaker 2: that he got in the third quarter at Arizona last weekend.
- 46:15Speaker 2: And the big injury issue now that Sam Donald is
- 46:17Speaker 2: back for the Seahawks is Julian Love. The veteran Pro
- 46:21Speaker 2: Bowl safety did not practice yesterday. He was not on
- 46:24Speaker 2: the injury report Wednesday, which means he was fine full
- 46:27Speaker 2: go and not worthy of being on the list. And then... Wednesday, yeah, Thursday,
- 46:32Speaker 2: did not practice with a new calf injury, which suggests
- 46:35Speaker 2: he got hurt in practice. So what do the Seahawks
- 46:37Speaker 2: do if he can't play? Well, A.J. Finley's on the
- 46:39Speaker 2: active roster as a deep safety, and they have Rodney
- 46:42Speaker 2: Thomas up from the practice squad now signed to the
- 46:45Speaker 2: 53 after being elevated and starting the first two games
- 46:47Speaker 2: when Ty Okada was hurt. So I expect the deep
- 46:50Speaker 2: safeties to be A.J. Finley and Rodney Thomas on Sunday
- 46:53Speaker 2: at Washington, and with Nicky Manwari up as the hybrid
- 46:56Speaker 2: linebacker to 4-3 Sam and a lot more dime. even
- 47:00Speaker 2: if Julian Love doesn't play. So the Julian Love situation
- 47:03Speaker 2: will be the story of the day for the Seahawks today.
- 47:07Speaker 2: So we'll see what Mike McDonald has to say, what
- 47:10Speaker 2: the injury report has to say at 1 o'clock today.
- 47:14Speaker 2: The injury report due to the NFL at 1 o'clock
- 47:17Speaker 2: and Julian Love's status will be the story of the day.
- 47:19Speaker 2: I'll have that at thenewstribune.com and on Twitter, at G
- 47:22Speaker 2: Bell Seattle. Tom Boehner has a job to do. He's
- 47:26Speaker 2: the head football coach at Seahawks. Bothell High School, for
- 47:30Speaker 2: 27 years he's been in that job. He's been coaching
- 47:33Speaker 2: for 38 years. He's a member of the Washington State
- 47:35Speaker 2: Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He's got a rivalry game
- 47:39Speaker 2: tonight against Woodinville High School, but he's in class because
- 47:41Speaker 2: he teaches.
- 47:42Speaker 5: He might be able to join us right at 1130
- 47:44Speaker 5: before we get to your talkbacks and texts and factor fiction.
- 47:47Speaker 3: So, yeah, we might pop him on for just a few.
- 47:50Speaker 2: So let's go to Woodinville High School, shall we? To
- 47:54Speaker 2: Wayne Maxwell. He's the head coach at Woodinville High School.
- 47:57Speaker 2: I actually Referee officiated his game on his sideline last week.
- 48:01Speaker 2: They played Evergreen of Vancouver, and they lost narrowly at
- 48:05Speaker 2: the end. They were leading that game the whole game.
- 48:08Speaker 2: There was a controversial spot on a fourth down that
- 48:10Speaker 2: I was a part of, and I won't bring it.
- 48:12Speaker 2: He was gracious enough to talk to me about that
- 48:14Speaker 2: off air, so I won't talk about what we talked about.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Before we get to Wayne Maxwell, I was calling him
- 48:20Speaker 2: Vernon Maxwell because of his NBA days. You remember Vernon Maxwell, right?
- 48:24Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Let me explain briefly what I've found out. Remember I
- 48:28Speaker 2: told you I was going to tell you what I
- 48:29Speaker 2: found out a little bit more about the Graham-Benzinger whole fiasco? Oh, yes.
- 48:34Speaker 3: Do tell.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Okay, so Benzinger puts out a statement amid all kinds
- 48:38Speaker 2: of controversy about what Mike McDonald said about Sean Payton.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Off the air. It was not supposed to be aired.
- 48:47Speaker 2: You heard Mike McDonald say this week that wasn't meant
- 48:49Speaker 2: for public consumption. Graham-Benzinger puts out a statement, a written
- 48:52Speaker 2: statement on social media saying... We gave the segment in
- 48:56Speaker 2: question in the entire episode that aired on YouTube to
- 48:59Speaker 2: Seahawks PR five days before we put it out, and
- 49:04Speaker 2: we didn't get anything back from PR objecting to any
- 49:06Speaker 2: of it, so we ran with it. That's Graham Benzinger's story. Well,
- 49:11Speaker 2: I've been told that's not true, that he did not
- 49:15Speaker 2: give the Seahawks PR department five days. He gave him
- 49:18Speaker 2: about an hour and he and he just gave him
- 49:21Speaker 2: oh hey instead of if you're not if you don't
- 49:24Speaker 2: instead of trying to track us down on the cw
- 49:26Speaker 2: or your local affiliate or online youtube somewhere It's a
- 49:30Speaker 2: syndicated television show, so it varies where it airs.
- 49:33Speaker 3: It's recorded, yes.
- 49:34Speaker 2: So instead of trying to check it out, here's the links.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Here's the links we're going to put on television. Here's
- 49:39Speaker 2: the links that we're going to put out on YouTube,
- 49:41Speaker 2: just so you have it. Boom.
- 49:42Speaker 3: Not, are you okay with this, just so you have it.
- 49:46Speaker 2: No. It was a courtesy of, here's the access to
- 49:49Speaker 2: be able to watch the airing. Also, I've been told
- 49:53Speaker 2: that the Graham Benjinger show went around the Seahawks PR department.
- 49:58Speaker 2: And the Seahawks did not get permission to come to
- 50:01Speaker 2: Mike McDonald's house.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Through them.
- 50:04Speaker 2: And in fact, the Seahawks really weren't in favor of
- 50:07Speaker 2: this idea. And he went around them anyway and did
- 50:10Speaker 2: it himself. That's what I've been told. I've been around
- 50:14Speaker 2: the building. Let's just put it that way.
- 50:15Speaker 3: You know, sources, Greg. Just say sources.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Sources. But I will tell you that the Graham Benzinger
- 50:22Speaker 2: story is not the story the Seahawks and Mike McDonald have.
- 50:25Speaker 2: That's a fact. We'll leave that there and let that
- 50:30Speaker 2: be that as it may. Suffice to say that Graham
- 50:33Speaker 2: Benzinger will never interview another Seahawk coach, player, groundskeeper, parking attendant.
- 50:40Speaker 5: I have been around this organization long enough to know
- 50:44Speaker 5: that's the case.
- 50:46Speaker 2: So the question as a journalist, because for him, if
- 50:50Speaker 2: you call him a journalist for this pool, it's almost
- 50:52Speaker 2: like he's not. He's more of an entertainer. But he
- 50:55Speaker 2: may not get too many people in the NFL and
- 50:57Speaker 2: maybe not in sports after this. If word gets out
- 51:00Speaker 2: exactly how this went down, I'm not sure Graham Benzinger
- 51:04Speaker 2: is going to have too many people lining up to
- 51:05Speaker 2: talk to him in the sports world, at least not
- 51:08Speaker 2: in the NFL, because NFL coaches and executives talk quite
- 51:12Speaker 2: a bit among each other. Then word will get out
- 51:15Speaker 2: pretty quickly about how those went down, if it went
- 51:17Speaker 2: down as I've been told it has. I'm just presenting
- 51:19Speaker 2: both sides of this, Graham Benzinger's side in his statement
- 51:23Speaker 2: and what I've learned what actually went down from a
- 51:25Speaker 2: Seahawks perspective. I'm about done with that story, but I
- 51:29Speaker 2: just wanted to close the loop.
- 51:30Speaker 3: I like that loop.
- 51:31Speaker 2: I just wanted to close the loop on everything.
- 51:34Speaker 5: I think that provides some more clarification because I could
- 51:37Speaker 5: not see the Seahawks PR, who is very attentive to
- 51:41Speaker 5: everything media, everything. And I just couldn't see them Having
- 51:47Speaker 5: five days to look at that and not having a
- 51:49Speaker 5: problem with it.
- 51:50Speaker 3: And like you said, it was a courtesy, not an approval.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Yes, it was more of a here's the links and boom.
- 51:57Speaker 2: So that's that. Are we ready to go to Woodinville
- 52:00Speaker 2: High School?
- 52:00Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Let's go to Wayne Maxwell. I taped an interview this
- 52:03Speaker 2: morning because he has a job to do, too. He's
- 52:05Speaker 2: teaching right now. Wayne Maxwell is the head coach of
- 52:08Speaker 2: Woodinville High School. He, like Tom Boehner at Bothell Cougars,
- 52:12Speaker 2: sent their teams to Hawaii for week one this year
- 52:15Speaker 2: at the end of August. We talk about that and
- 52:17Speaker 2: a couple other things on our high school football focus
- 52:20Speaker 2: on a Washington State Beef Commission football Friday on 93.3 KJR.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Wayne Maxwell of Woodinville High School. Back here on a
- 52:28Speaker 2: Washington State Beef Commission football Friday on 93.3 KJR.
- 52:31Speaker 8: Our high school football focus we do every Friday.
- 52:34Speaker 2: This one It's a backyard brawl on the North Shore,
- 52:37Speaker 2: Woodinville and Bothell, and we're pleased to be joined by
- 52:39Speaker 2: Woodinville High School coach Wayne Maxwell on the.
- 52:43Speaker 8: Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Good morning, coach.
- 52:45Speaker 2: And to have a rivalry game like this still in September,
- 52:49Speaker 2: that's unique. How do you get your guys ready coming
- 52:52Speaker 2: off of a Saturday game on a short week to
- 52:54Speaker 2: play maybe their biggest rival?
- 52:56Speaker 15: Yeah, morning.
- 52:57Speaker 16: Appreciate it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 52:59Speaker 17: Great rivalry. I mean, you know, to go down in
- 53:01Speaker 17: the Popkini... And the neighborhood's going at it. It's a
- 53:06Speaker 17: great scene. And so you don't have to do anything
- 53:09Speaker 17: as far as getting them ready. One odd year, we
- 53:13Speaker 17: played week one with the way the schedule went years ago.
- 53:16Speaker 17: So both programs respect each other and have no problem
- 53:20Speaker 17: getting up for it.
- 53:21Speaker 2: For those that are into high school football, maybe parents
- 53:24Speaker 2: or have followed it for a long time but don't understand,
- 53:27Speaker 2: what role does the head coach have in scheduling, especially non-conference,
- 53:31Speaker 2: but now you're into the league. Does the league rotate
- 53:34Speaker 2: when you play Bothell and how much sway do you
- 53:37Speaker 2: have on non-conference? Do you strike your own deals at
- 53:40Speaker 2: clinics in the off season or do you, in your case,
- 53:42Speaker 2: leave it to your AD or collaboration? Yeah.
- 53:45Speaker 17: Non-conference, uh, coaches can have, uh, um, you know, good
- 53:50Speaker 17: say in that, uh, for sure. The, the conference games
- 53:53Speaker 17: though are awful difficult. Um, It's pretty much the 80s
- 53:56Speaker 17: put the schedules together with that.
- 53:59Speaker 2: And I'm assuming that Bothell and Woodinville's players have played
- 54:02Speaker 2: together since they were peewees and they know each other
- 54:05Speaker 2: outside of the sport. Is that a good or bad thing,
- 54:08Speaker 2: do you think, competitive-wise for a coach that these guys
- 54:11Speaker 2: know each other so well?
- 54:14Speaker 17: Yeah, you know, I feel like, you know, our programs
- 54:19Speaker 17: have the respect for each other. Both programs have been
- 54:23Speaker 17: solid year in, year out. And, you know, they've really
- 54:27Speaker 17: embraced the rivalry, getting after it. And, you know, I
- 54:32Speaker 17: think it's a good thing.
- 54:34Speaker 8: This is Coach Wayne Maxwell. He's the head coach at
- 54:36Speaker 8: Woodinville High School.
- 54:36Speaker 2: They have a big rivalry game tonight in Washington State
- 54:39Speaker 2: against Bothell High School at Popkini Stadium, an iconic venue
- 54:43Speaker 2: here in our Seattle area.
- 54:46Speaker 8: We're highlighting this on our.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Weekly high school football focus on a Washington State Beef
- 54:50Speaker 2: Commission football Friday. Wayne, just like Bothell and Tom Boehner's crew,
- 54:55Speaker 2: you went to Hawaii for your first game this summer.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Can you talk about the process? I think it may
- 55:00Speaker 2: be the second or third. You went to California a
- 55:03Speaker 2: couple of years ago as well. The process for that,
- 55:06Speaker 2: you have fundraising, the parents, the boosters get involved. How
- 55:10Speaker 2: much it costs the players, where you stay, what do
- 55:13Speaker 2: you do, how long do you stay, the whole trip.
- 55:14Speaker 8: Could you just summarize for us how that went?
- 55:17Speaker 16: Yeah, absolutely. We're just trying to give the kids a
- 55:20Speaker 16: great experience.
- 55:21Speaker 17: Their time is limited coming through and to be able
- 55:24Speaker 17: to give them.
- 55:25Speaker 16: Opportunities, opportunities together.
- 55:27Speaker 17: I look at it very similar to a bowl game
- 55:31Speaker 17: where kids are coming together, they're bonding, having great experiences.
- 55:36Speaker 16: And yeah, it's a great process.
- 55:38Speaker 17: It starts really in winter and they start contributing to
- 55:44Speaker 17: their financial aspects in March. So they have time to
- 55:47Speaker 17: kind of chunk it out. You know, it's just about
- 55:51Speaker 17: $ 3, 000 for each trip, but it covers everything, which I think,
- 55:57Speaker 17: you know, is really a great deal where it covers
- 56:00Speaker 17: all their food, all the entertainment, all the meals, the,
- 56:04Speaker 17: you know, the travel, the busing, everything. So yeah, fantastic trip.
- 56:10Speaker 17: You know, one thing I would highlight with our trip
- 56:13Speaker 17: It's our second time we've been to one of the
- 56:15Speaker 17: Hawaiian Islands. We've really done a great community aspect where
- 56:21Speaker 17: our communities come together and the team hosts us for
- 56:24Speaker 17: a meal. And just to see the cultures coming together,
- 56:28Speaker 17: it's pretty special. A comment by an admin from Waikia
- 56:32Speaker 17: High School was, this is our highlight of the year,
- 56:35Speaker 17: being able to host you and have you in our home.
- 56:37Speaker 17: And so it's cool just to sit back and see
- 56:40Speaker 17: it happen organically.
- 56:42Speaker 2: And beside the football and beside the meal at the
- 56:45Speaker 2: visiting team or the home teams, what other off-field stuff
- 56:48Speaker 2: did you do and how long did you stay?
- 56:50Speaker 17: Yeah, we were there from Thursday to Monday. You know,
- 56:54Speaker 17: it was Labor Day weekend. And so, you know, we
- 56:59Speaker 17: did some cultural aspects, took them to some ruins that
- 57:04Speaker 17: was up in the Waimea area. Of course, we practiced
- 57:08Speaker 17: a couple times. different high schools, and we had interactions
- 57:10Speaker 17: with the programs there as well. It's pretty remarkable to
- 57:15Speaker 17: see the kids come together. Our first day at a
- 57:18Speaker 17: high school in Kona, how quick the kids could, you know,
- 57:21Speaker 17: they're having fun, the shadow boxing and doing all that stuff.
- 57:25Speaker 17: It just instantly brings them together. And then, of course,
- 57:28Speaker 17: we had a highlighted luau that was on our Sunday
- 57:32Speaker 17: night celebration, and that was really cool to see the
- 57:36Speaker 17: kids go through that.
- 57:37Speaker 2: I can bet some of your linemen went to work
- 57:39Speaker 2: on the luau and the food at the luau.
- 57:42Speaker 16: Oh, absolutely. The coaches were loving it too.
- 57:46Speaker 8: All right.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Just so listeners know, this was the week before school began.
- 57:51Speaker 2: So it's not like they took Thursday and Friday and
- 57:52Speaker 2: Monday off of school. School had yet to begin, which
- 57:55Speaker 2: is why, Wayne, I'm assuming that's why you scheduled game one, right?
- 57:59Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 57:59Speaker 17: Week one, school year is getting started. It kind of
- 58:01Speaker 17: depends on where the school year falls. We actually had
- 58:04Speaker 17: first couple of days of school, but you know, not
- 58:07Speaker 17: a bad time to start where you're just, you're kind
- 58:09Speaker 17: of ramping up in school and not, not much going on.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Another big picture question, if I may, on a game day,
- 58:16Speaker 2: the way football has become specialized with seven on seven
- 58:20Speaker 2: camps and academies and the players that are trying to
- 58:23Speaker 2: reach the next level.
- 58:25Speaker 8: Where's your view on that?
- 58:26Speaker 2: Do you encourage players to play other sports outside of
- 58:29Speaker 2: the football season? I know you have weightlifting and conditioning
- 58:32Speaker 2: as well in the off season, but where do you
- 58:34Speaker 2: stand on multiple sports and the specificity that high school
- 58:37Speaker 2: and youth sports have gone to lately?
- 58:39Speaker 16: Yeah, absolutely.
- 58:40Speaker 17: I mean, we're huge on trying to push guys to
- 58:43Speaker 17: be multi-sport athletes and make it kind of, kind of
- 58:47Speaker 17: what high school sports are about and the whole high
- 58:50Speaker 17: school experience. Um, you know, we really try to push them, uh,
- 58:54Speaker 17: to get involved. Um, you know, we shoot, we love to,
- 58:58Speaker 17: to find other athletes and other sports come out and play.
- 59:00Speaker 5: Right.
- 59:01Speaker 17: Uh, Your short time you have through high school to
- 59:04Speaker 17: experience anything, uh go do it have fun uh enjoy
- 59:08Speaker 17: it absolutely so yeah we're 100 supportive of guys uh
- 59:13Speaker 17: doing other sports.
- 59:15Speaker 2: I've officiated your games here the last couple years and
- 59:17Speaker 2: you have a kicker that i noticed pregame last week
- 59:19Speaker 2: was kicking like 50 some yards is he a soccer.
- 59:21Speaker 16: Player uh yeah he was he was a soccer player.
- 59:25Speaker 8: Uh what's his name we give him some pub.
- 59:27Speaker 17: Yeah yeah jordan um Jordan's awesome. You know, last year
- 59:32Speaker 17: was the first time he turned out for football. Never
- 59:35Speaker 17: done it before. And, you know, kind of the fact
- 59:38Speaker 17: that you mentioned this, bring this up. We've had three
- 59:42Speaker 17: other soccer players within the last couple of weeks actually
- 59:45Speaker 17: come out.
- 59:46Speaker 16: And, hey, I'm interested in doing so. Yeah, we'll have him.
- 59:50Speaker 16: We'll have him out. But Jordan, as far as his improvement.
- 59:54Speaker 17: Actually won our most improved player of the year last
- 59:57Speaker 17: year because he worked so hard to get to where
- 59:59Speaker 17: he is. And he's having a fantastic senior year so far.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Any players in particular you'd like to highlight, whether they're
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: leadership off the field.
- 1:00:06Speaker 8: Or classroom or on the field in any way?
- 1:00:09Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean, we just, as a whole, we're, you know,
- 1:00:14Speaker 17: the staff and the boys are really just enjoying our
- 1:00:17Speaker 17: time together. The culture piece is great. Obviously, again, like a,
- 1:00:22Speaker 17: doing an experience like Hawaii where you go away and
- 1:00:25Speaker 17: you're with each other and you got all the bonding.
- 1:00:28Speaker 17: It's a great time to see the kids really kind
- 1:00:30Speaker 17: of come out of their shells. And, you know, some
- 1:00:33Speaker 17: of the guys leading the way for us, Lyman, Colin Chester,
- 1:00:36Speaker 17: outside linebacker, Jonah Levengood, two guys that have really just
- 1:00:41Speaker 17: embraced the whole culture.
- 1:00:43Speaker 16: Piece and team and family. And they're doing a great
- 1:00:45Speaker 16: job for us.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: I would remiss if I didn't mention the Woodinville High School,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: 44 strong. And I was told by some assistants of
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: the game I covered last week about that.
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: Can you explain what 44 strong is and the legacy
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: it means at Woodinville high school? Yeah.
- 1:01:00Speaker 16: Yeah. For us, it's, it's, it's a big deal.
- 1:01:03Speaker 17: About 10 years ago, tragically, we lost a former player.
- 1:01:07Speaker 17: Parker Moore was playing football down at Linfield university and,
- 1:01:11Speaker 17: and tragic murder and his life. And really it just
- 1:01:17Speaker 17: kind of, It took a pause in everything with communities
- 1:01:23Speaker 17: coming together and seeing what's important with family. For us,
- 1:01:27Speaker 17: moving forward, we just thought it's a great way to
- 1:01:32Speaker 17: highlight what football is all about with the family and support.
- 1:01:37Speaker 17: Parker was exactly what Woodinville football was all about. Just
- 1:01:43Speaker 17: loving being with his family, whether it's workouts or football
- 1:01:46Speaker 17: or team meals, whatever that was. And so for us,
- 1:01:49Speaker 17: it was an easy way to circle back what is
- 1:01:52Speaker 17: important about family and football and also, of course, to,
- 1:01:55Speaker 17: you know, tribute to Parker and his legacy. So, yes,
- 1:01:58Speaker 17: every year a player is selected to represent the number.
- 1:02:03Speaker 17: And actually, the two gentlemen I mentioned represent 44. Lyman Chester,
- 1:02:09Speaker 17: of course, has a sticker on his helmet. And then
- 1:02:12Speaker 17: Jonah is, of course, wearing the jersey.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Thank you for that, Coach, and thank you for bringing
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: his legacy. Okay, tonight, Tom, back onto the field. Tom
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Bader and his Bellevue crew, one of the powers in
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: the state. What's the key to victory tonight for Woodville?
- 1:02:27Speaker 17: Yeah, just, you know, playing within ourself as far as
- 1:02:31Speaker 17: you know, last year, or last week, we had some
- 1:02:34Speaker 17: unfortunate mistakes at our own hands. And we can't do
- 1:02:38Speaker 17: that versus a very, very good football team. Good physical
- 1:02:42Speaker 17: football team. Bothell, obviously, they want to run the football.
- 1:02:45Speaker 17: We've got to be able to you know, hold them
- 1:02:49Speaker 17: as far as their rushing yards. And then, you know,
- 1:02:51Speaker 17: when they do want to throw, they've got a nice
- 1:02:52Speaker 17: couple playmakers. So, of course, got to limit those explosives
- 1:02:56Speaker 17: for us. And then, you know, having a young group
- 1:02:58Speaker 17: on offense for us is just, again, kind of highlighting,
- 1:03:01Speaker 17: you know, limiting mistakes for us. And, you know, we
- 1:03:04Speaker 17: like some matchups out there, and hopefully we can take
- 1:03:07Speaker 17: advantage of those.
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: Coach Wayne Maxwell. I salute for what you do.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: I appreciate your sidelined demeanor and your professionalism when I've
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: officiated with you. And most of all, I appreciate all
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: the time you spend because it's a hell of a
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: lot of time you spend on these kids and our youth.
- 1:03:21Speaker 8: And I appreciate you. Thank you.
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 1:03:23Speaker 16: Thanks for having me, Greg.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: You're welcome. Good luck tonight. Coach Wayne Maxwell of Woodinville
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: High School. They've got a big one tonight in Bothell
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: on the North Shore. Up next, your chance to be
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: a part of the show, 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: text line or your talkback's That's all on a Washington
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: State Beef Commission Football Friday on 93.3.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: with Greg Bell on your home for the NFL.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM. Hi, welcome back. Greg Bell,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Jess from McIntyre, Washington State Beef Commission, Football Friday. Tom
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Boehner has a job to do. He has a real
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: life and a real job, and we're in the middle
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: of the school day, and he's teaching. We got him
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline to talk live about Bothell
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: and Woodinville tonight. The Hall of Fame, Washington State Hall
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: of Fame coach, Tom Boehner, in his 27th year at
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Bothell High School. Coach, thanks a lot for doing this
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: on a game day. What's the key tonight to beating
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Woodinville in a rivalry game in early season?
- 1:04:28Speaker 15: Well, first of all, thanks for having me. And I apologize.
- 1:04:31Speaker 15: You know, we have to model the school before the
- 1:04:33Speaker 15: sports thing that we talk to our kids about all
- 1:04:35Speaker 15: the time. So I apologize for being tardy. The key
- 1:04:39Speaker 15: to being Woodinville is, you know, first of all, Woodinville,
- 1:04:43Speaker 15: they're well coached. They come out with a different energy
- 1:04:45Speaker 15: when they play the blue guys over here. You know,
- 1:04:49Speaker 15: we've talked about that and we're trying to match that
- 1:04:51Speaker 15: intensity and that focus. And, you know, I think it's execution, right?
- 1:04:55Speaker 15: You've got to You got to do the things that
- 1:04:58Speaker 15: you're planning on doing. You can't shoot yourself in the foot,
- 1:05:01Speaker 15: so to speak, and make mistakes. And then you just
- 1:05:04Speaker 15: got to execute on the key moments and, you know,
- 1:05:07Speaker 15: hope for the best outcome. But it'll be a fun
- 1:05:09Speaker 15: challenge for us tonight.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: Like Wayne Maxwell's voice in Woodinville, you went to Hawaii
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: for your first game. Can you talk about that experience
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: and how that came about?
- 1:05:17Speaker 15: Yeah, absolutely. We've been traveling. We try to tell our
- 1:05:22Speaker 15: players that one time in your four years here, you
- 1:05:25Speaker 15: will travel somewhere. We went to Hawaii this year. Before that,
- 1:05:30Speaker 15: we went to New York. Before that, we went to Denver, Colorado.
- 1:05:33Speaker 15: We're just trying to get our kids like Wayne is.
- 1:05:37Speaker 15: a life experience, an opportunity to see a different culture
- 1:05:41Speaker 15: or a different part of our country. For some of
- 1:05:44Speaker 15: our kids, it's the first time flying. For many, it
- 1:05:47Speaker 15: was their first time to Hawaii. Probably the least significant
- 1:05:52Speaker 15: thing we do on these trips is play a football game.
- 1:05:55Speaker 15: Although it is important to us and we put time
- 1:05:58Speaker 15: into that, it's the experiences that we get with another
- 1:06:03Speaker 15: part of.
- 1:06:06Speaker 15: Culture that many, many kids have never seen. We, we
- 1:06:09Speaker 15: had a great time like Wayne and his team did. We,
- 1:06:13Speaker 15: we broke bread after our game with Moanalua and they
- 1:06:17Speaker 15: fed us. And, and then you get to see kids
- 1:06:19Speaker 15: interact with people they've never met. And it's really cool.
- 1:06:22Speaker 15: It's a special thing. Our kids work hard for it.
- 1:06:26Speaker 15: They raise the money on their own. And, and, and
- 1:06:28Speaker 15: so I'm super excited to, to be able to do
- 1:06:31Speaker 15: that and be with them.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: Tom Boehner, the Washington State Hall of Fame head coach
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: from Bothell High School, joining us on the day that
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Bothell and Woodinville play in a backyard North Shore rivalry
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: game tonight on 93.3 KJRFM. Tom, you've been doing this
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: 38 years, your 27th year at Bothell High School. Salute
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: to you for all the service to our young men
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: that are preparing them for life. Why do you do it?
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: And what's the most rewarding thing you get out of it?
- 1:06:58Speaker 15: Well, thank you for that. You know, They say that,
- 1:07:02Speaker 15: you know, teachers and coaches can have an impact on
- 1:07:05Speaker 15: the life of their student athletes. And sometimes it's the
- 1:07:09Speaker 15: other way around, too. I do it because I love it.
- 1:07:12Speaker 11: It is fun.
- 1:07:13Speaker 15: I never say I go to work. I get to
- 1:07:15Speaker 15: go to school. You know, there are wonderful challenges, you know,
- 1:07:20Speaker 15: in the classroom and on the football field. And I
- 1:07:23Speaker 15: think it's fun to be a part of a of
- 1:07:24Speaker 15: a group that, that challenges these young men and, and,
- 1:07:28Speaker 15: you know, to try to, to try to bring out
- 1:07:29Speaker 15: the most of them where we're part of the village.
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:07:32Speaker 15: And, uh, and, and it keeps us young. It keeps
- 1:07:35Speaker 15: us competing. It keeps us, you know, challenged as well. So, um, I,
- 1:07:40Speaker 15: I would tell you simply, I, I love doing it.
- 1:07:43Speaker 15: That's why I keep doing it. Wow.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Sats off to you, sir. Salute you. I know you're
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: a busy man. Thanks for doing this on a game day.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Thanks for doing this in the middle of a work day.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: And honestly, salute to you. You don't do it for
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: the money. The hours you spend outside of the classroom,
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: outside of the school, bus rides, plane rides with these kids,
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: and you do it because you love it. Our society
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: needs more people like you, sir. Thank you very much.
- 1:08:06Speaker 15: Thank you, and thank you for your support of high
- 1:08:08Speaker 15: school student-athletes. I appreciate it greatly.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Good luck tonight, Tom. Thanks a lot.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Tom Boehner, the head coach, the Washington State Hall of
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Fame head coach at Bothell High School before Bothell and
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Woodinville play in our feature high school football showcase game
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: of the week. Now it's time to win $ 1, 000. We're
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: day feels lucky. Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: KJR FM.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: You know the drumline music? That means I'm going to college.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Jessamyn on the show does NFL, so most times I
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: might lean college.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: You can dabble.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: I can.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: You can. You're not encroaching on any territory.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: NFL burned me last week with the Steelers-Patriots.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: Oh, so maybe you just don't want to.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Steelers played their worst game I've seen them play in years.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: It was a Steeler bid. 20-3 loss to the Patriots.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: So I'm going to the campuses, and I'm going down
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, home of multiple Olympics.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: John F. Kennedy has spoken there. Well, USC and Oregon
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: are playing there tomorrow at 4.30 in a national TV game.
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: The Coliseum.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: The Ducks. I wish the Ducks would get beat by
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: a lot tomorrow. What they did to Portland State was ridiculous.
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: 84 points.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: And still running offense up 77-0. I know it was
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: with their fourth string, but come on.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: That was pretty rough. That's like an end-the-game situation.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Oh, man. Take knees and get a turnover on downs.
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: Ridiculous. So I wish the Trojans would beat them, but
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: the USC Trojans defense is awful. I mean, really bad.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: You know who scored 35 points on them last week? Rutgers. Oh, right, right, right, right.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: USC beat Rutgers 42-35. The over and under. I'm staying
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: away from the points, but the Ducks are favored by three.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: And I'm not sure how that's going to go. I
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: could see USC winning. But what I can see is
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: a shootout. If Rutgers could put 35 on USC, what's
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: Oregon going to do to them? Oregon's going to put
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: at least 40 up, right? So that means that if
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: the over and under, the total points spread in this
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: game is 61.5. I think USC can score 22 points
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: on Oregon because I see Oregon getting 40 or more
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: on this USC defense. It just gave up 35 to Rutgers.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: So that's why I'm going over. 61.5 over. USC-Oregon over
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: 61.5 points. I know that's a lot of points, but man,
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: is USC's defense bad.
- 1:10:50Speaker 15: Bad, bad, bad.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: It's been for years. It's Lincoln Riley's big, big problem
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: down in USC. Why he hasn't won consistently most times
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: is because his defense has failed him. 61 and a
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: half USC Oregon. Take the over. If you agree with me,
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: I want to win a thousand dollars. Text fact to 49451.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: If you disagree, text fiction to 49451. You have 12
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: minutes from right now to text in USC Oregon over
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: 61 and a half points. That means I think both
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: teams are going to combine for 62 or more points.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: And you can win $ 1, 000.
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: I think that's actually a very good fact.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: I hate to give that many points. But, man, the
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Rutgers 35 thing just keeps sticking out at me.
- 1:11:28Speaker 8: I know.
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: I hate that Rutgers has become the punching bag of
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: the Big Ten.
- 1:11:31Speaker 15: They have.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: I've been growing up in the vicinity of it and
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: have friends who have coached there.
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: My brother-in-law played for them.
- 1:11:36Speaker 8: Yeah, but.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: It is.
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: I mean, everyone makes fun of Piscataway, New Jersey.
- 1:11:41Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a should.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Exit 12.
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: I do, too. Yes, we all know it.
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: Except I just feel bad for the program because they
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: haven't really had a chance to thrive in a very
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: long time.
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: And now the conference got stronger.
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: The Lincoln Rileys don't have defense. That's why I'm taking
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: this pick. Oregon and USC, over 61.5 points. If you agree,
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: text FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: The next chance to win will be 2.35 p.m. with
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: Ian Furness. Dave Softy-Muller and Dick Fane will have another
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: pick at 3.35. Remember, you only have to win once.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: And then the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel will give
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: you $ 1, 000 if your name is drawn on Monday. The
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: guy or gal who wins the most between now and
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: December 11th, Army-Navy Friday in New York City, Jessamyn McIntyre,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: that will be broadcast live from Times Square. Whoever wins
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: the most between now and then will win $ 10, 000 from
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Real quickly to the
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: text line. A ton of text about the Mariners. I mean,
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: a lot.
- 1:12:40Speaker 11: A lot.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: We do have some talkbacks as well.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Let's get to those first because I love hearing more voices.
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: Getting there.
- 1:12:52Speaker 11: Here we go.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: Those stinky green guys. First off, go blue, 1-0, go Bothell,
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: beat Woodinville. Those stinky green guys.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: But, Greg, Scott.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: Service was an active coach in Major League Baseball. He
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: was a bench coach. He was on many, many staffs.
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: I don't think that's the same as Dan Wilson. Dan
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: Wilson was just a puppet to begin with. He was
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: like a spring training mascot. Scott and Dan are.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Don't talk about the Mariners without talking about the franchise
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: value increasing $ 100 million a year. Yep.
- 1:13:31Speaker 7: Compounded.
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: That's where the big money is.
- 1:13:33Speaker 7: It's not on operations.
- 1:13:36Speaker 11: Well, let's change the subject line.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: If by some miracle the Mariners make it to the
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: World Series in the near future, please invite Rick Riz
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: back into the booth as an announcer.
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: That would be lots of fun.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Also, my kids graduated from Bothell High School. Go Cougars!
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: Go Cougs!
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Cougs everywhere!
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: Love it!
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: I forgot about that valuation that continues to rise.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: While their payroll remains in the bottom half of the league.
- 1:14:03Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: And they get luxury tax revenue from the teams that
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: spend the most. 206. No one is ever coming to
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: save the M's. Whether we're talking free agent players or
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: field manager, everyone in pro baseball knows about Kevin Mahler,
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Jerry 54% to Poto, the ESPN F grade for the season,
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: manager hiring track record, national broadcast the other day confirming
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: T-Mobile is one of the worst parks for hitters. Historically
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: worst failure in one season by the team and the
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: team's MVP, proven track record of ignoring the on-field product
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: in favor of profits. Man, that's a summation, isn't it?
- 1:14:40Speaker 16: 206.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: We annoy players before they actually do anything. This team
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: needs a manager that brings energy and accountability. We make
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: way too many mental errors. Ownership needs to add depth.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: So when someone needs to be benched, they have a
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: viable major league caliber replacement. That's an interesting point. If
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: you bench Julio Rodriguez, you're bringing in some triple A
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: or 2A or 4A guy. That's a good point.
- 1:15:03Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: And for Ness, thanks for the text. Thanks for rolling
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: with the scheduling. Thanks for Tom Boehner for rolling out
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: of class. It sounded like he might have been in
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: the hallway.
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: I think he was. He was in the class when
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: he called back.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: I'm so sorry.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: That's classy.
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: That is very classy.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: And for those of you on the text line asking,
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: why do I do high school sports? Because those guys care.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: They deserve to be highlighted because of the work they
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: do for the youth of our country. preparing them to
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: be young adults, and I want to highlight them.
- 1:15:35Speaker 17: I do.
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: And we will continue to do so.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: If you don't like it, change the channel. I'm not
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: making you listen. Point blank. I'm just going to tell
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: it straight. If you don't like it, don't bitch on
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: the text line. Just don't listen.
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: Simple.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: Don't be a miserable schmuck that wants to tell me
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: how bad I am because I'm putting high school. Who
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: cares about high school coaches?
- 1:15:54Speaker 11: I do.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: And a lot of the people.
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: And parents and alums and a lot.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: Of people do.
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: So sit down. Up next, Ian Furness. He'll join us,
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: talk about what his weekend is, what he's got on
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: today at 12 to 3 on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: with Greg Bell on your.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: Home for the NFL. Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Hi,
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: welcome back. A packed show today. If you missed our
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: interview with Tom Boehner, the Hall of Fame coach from
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Bothell High School. One of the best. He's been there
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: for 27 years. What a program. We're getting a lot
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: of text here about Tom Boehner. Hey, I played for
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Tom Boehner. What a pleasant surprise to hear him.
- 1:16:39Speaker 7: I love what you guys are doing.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: I appreciate that. There's some chucks on there that don't
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: like it, but that's okay. I had to air them
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: out a little bit.
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: Can I?
- 1:16:47Speaker 6: Stop.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Just for a second. Ian Furness, by the way.
- 1:16:52Speaker 7: Sports radio is an interesting beast. It is. In some ways,
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: it's like watching SportsCenter or any other show that has
- 1:17:03Speaker 7: to do with sports, unless it's like, hey, a pregame
- 1:17:05Speaker 7: show for football or college football or basketball or hockey
- 1:17:08Speaker 7: or baseball, whatever. It should be kind of a potpourri
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: of different things, right? It should be a grab bag.
- 1:17:15Speaker 7: You should be, if we're doing our jobs correctly, all
- 1:17:18Speaker 7: due respect to the newspapers, the newspapers used to do that.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: Yes, they did.
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: They don't do it anymore.
- 1:17:23Speaker 16: No.
- 1:17:24Speaker 7: I mean, the local paper in Seattle only covers two teams.
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: I'm sorry, three.
- 1:17:29Speaker 6: Three.
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: UW football, Mariners, Seahawks. It's been well-documented this week. Everyone's
- 1:17:33Speaker 7: losing their mind, right?
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:17:35Speaker 7: You're not servicing your readers.
- 1:17:37Speaker 8: Soccer.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: They're dropping soccer in this community? And hockey. And hockey.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: And everything else.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: The Comenews Tribune.
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: UW men's basketball, not going to have a full-time beat.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: The Comenews Tribune covers high school sports and the Seahawks.
- 1:17:48Speaker 7: And that's where I was going to go. When, at
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: one point in time... When Lauren and Millis were both
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: at the News Tribune, Mason Kelly was at the Seattle Times.
- 1:17:57Speaker 15: That's right.
- 1:17:58Speaker 7: You had a Saturday paper in the South Sound and
- 1:18:01Speaker 7: a Saturday paper in Seattle that had all the high
- 1:18:06Speaker 7: school scores.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Photos, game stories.
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: Stories from some of the big games. We had stringers
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: covering from Yelm to Centralia. That's what a newspaper should do,
- 1:18:16Speaker 7: especially the newspaper of record. Instead, we cover NFL and
- 1:18:20Speaker 7: MLB and sometimes college football. It's sad, but I get
- 1:18:25Speaker 7: back to sports radio. In sports radio, we should be
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: doing a lot of different things. Now, listen, it's, people
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: ask me all the time, like, what do you do?
- 1:18:32Speaker 7: I said, well, listen, it's Taylor Swift. Like you, Taylor
- 1:18:35Speaker 7: Swift of the Seahawks. That's what you, that's on your playlist.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: Most of the time. But it doesn't mean you can't
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: squeeze in some other interesting things, especially good stories like
- 1:18:44Speaker 7: Tom Boehner. If you don't know who Tom Boehner is,
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: you don't care, then you're probably new to the area.
- 1:18:49Speaker 7: Maybe you should invest a little bit more in the community.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Or you don't have kids or you're not married because
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: you are a type of person who's hateful and doesn't
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: have people that would love you.
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: Okay, let's not pick on the singles out there.
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: But all that's true.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:19:04Speaker 7: I think it's great.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: We do.
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: Dick Fane does the Friday night show now, Varsity Football Live.
- 1:19:09Speaker 7: We brought that back. I love that. I say this often,
- 1:19:13Speaker 7: and Jess knows this, and Purple Sheet would agree. He
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: would really agree. I may not be the best company guy.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: I think you're saying that on the radio.
- 1:19:24Speaker 7: I may not be the best company guy. Since I
- 1:19:27Speaker 7: got here in 2006, one of the coolest things that
- 1:19:29Speaker 7: I've always thought about this radio station that differentiates us
- 1:19:32Speaker 7: from the other stations and station, we've always had a
- 1:19:36Speaker 7: high school presence, football, basketball specifically, including the girls' basketball.
- 1:19:40Speaker 7: And I think that's a really important thing for our community,
- 1:19:41Speaker 7: and I'm glad we do that. And Dick's got the
- 1:19:43Speaker 7: show tonight at 10. You do the thing every week.
- 1:19:45Speaker 7: That's a big game tonight, by the way.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: It is.
- 1:19:46Speaker 7: Popkini be jamming.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: Popkini is a cool spot, man. It's a cool spot.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: Friday night lights. Let's go.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: Popkini is the one place that reminds me of Ohio
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: high school football.
- 1:19:54Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: I'll say this.
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: There's others.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: There are.
- 1:19:57Speaker 7: Lake Stevens.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: I have yet to be there. Is better. I've heard that.
- 1:20:00Speaker 7: Lake Stevens, I think, is better.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: I need to get up there. Shout out to Lake Stevens.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: I need to get up there.
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: That's the hot.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: Take of the day.
- 1:20:06Speaker 7: Lake Stevens is a better high school football atmosphere than Popkini.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Come at me. I need to get up there. What
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: do you got to say? You got Danny O'Neal?
- 1:20:17Speaker 7: Danny O'Neal at 120 today. He's got some Mariners thoughts
- 1:20:20Speaker 7: and Graham Bensinger thoughts. Give me 20 seconds. I missed
- 1:20:24Speaker 7: the tease.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Graham Bensinger lied. He didn't give the Seahawks five days
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: to review that. He gave them about 25-30 minutes. He
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: just gave them a link. Here's what we're showing. In
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: case you can't find it. You should never get another
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: interview from a name again. Okay, Danny O'Neill, he's got
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: thoughts on that. I'll have to bring that up to
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: Danny because I don't know if he knows that. So
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: we've got that coming up. Greg Cosell, 1220. What does
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: the tape say, Jess? What does the tape say?
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: Oh, Greg, I have to call him.
- 1:20:51Speaker 7: Rob Rang at 2 o'clock. Factor Fiction as well, all
- 1:20:54Speaker 7: coming up today.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: Ian's Cougs are against Arizona tomorrow at Martin Stadium. The
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Huskies are playing Minnesota at Husky Stadium at 8 o'clock.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: I'm headed on a plane to Washington, D.C. for Seahawks
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: and Commanders. You'll hear from me from the East Coast
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: on Monday morning. Ian's up next. Have a great weekend.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: Thanks for everything. Thanks for the talkbacks. Thanks for the
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: input on 93.3 KJRFM.
