- 0:01Speaker 1: Airports says the Twins are for sale again, but is
- 0:04Speaker 1: it true? And will they spend what's necessary in this offseason?
- 0:08Speaker 1: Who's one player we'd lock up right now if we could?
- 0:10Speaker 1: And more topics today on Twin Cities Territory, your Minnesota
- 0:14Speaker 1: Twins podcast here on the Filed Territory Network. It's a
- 0:17Speaker 1: mailbag show. We're answering your questions today. Zach Pierce and
- 0:20Speaker 1: Dan Hayes of The Athletic joined by Tyler Duffy, longtime
- 0:24Speaker 1: Major League pitcher. Welcome back. Tyler was golfing on Monday.
- 0:27Speaker 1: How'd it go?
- 0:28Speaker 2: It was good.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Weather was cooperative in Houston, so we weren't out there
- 0:33Speaker 3: sweating to death and see a bunch of old Rice
- 0:35Speaker 3: baseball guys.
- 0:36Speaker 4: So it's always a good thing to get the crew
- 0:39Speaker 4: back together.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well, we had a good run without you on Monday,
- 0:42Speaker 1: but we're glad to have you back. Thanks to everybody
- 0:44Speaker 1: who watched the last episode, our biggest one yet. So
- 0:47Speaker 1: let's get into it today. We are talking mailbag. It
- 0:51Speaker 1: was just a coincidence. Actually, it was Tyler's suggestion for
- 0:55Speaker 1: a topic that did it, so it was definitely not
- 0:57Speaker 1: a coincidence. The Twins obviously had a potential sale fall
- 1:03Speaker 1: through recently. When was that? What month was that last year, Dan?
- 1:08Speaker 2: That was August of 2025.
- 1:09Speaker 1: 25. Yeah. Yeah. And Charlie Walters in the Pioneer Press
- 1:17Speaker 1: had a story the other day in which he said, quote,
- 1:21Speaker 1: that sale talks are said to be heating up again
- 1:23Speaker 1: with a New York-based global investment firm, which... Be careful
- 1:29Speaker 1: what you look for there.
- 1:30Speaker 2: But they are a part of the, yeah. Verde already
- 1:33Speaker 2: owns part of the Twins. Like that's, that they're in
- 1:37Speaker 2: as part of that group.
- 1:38Speaker 1: So the questions, we've got a couple of them asking
- 1:41Speaker 1: if it's true that this is happening. And Dan, I'll
- 1:44Speaker 1: kick this one over to you.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So I know that Twins fans, I know the answer
- 1:50Speaker 2: Twins fans want to hear. And I'm going to unfortunately
- 1:54Speaker 2: disappoint you and tell you no.
- 1:57Speaker 1: There's no accuracy. There's no validity to this.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And I've, I've heard it from league source and a,
- 2:05Speaker 2: I've heard it from multiple people. Let's just say that. Look, Tom,
- 2:10Speaker 2: Tom Pollard was pretty upfront at the press conference about
- 2:13Speaker 2: how things are going right now, how much he enjoyed
- 2:15Speaker 2: his role this year that, that way. But you don't
- 2:19Speaker 2: just take, you know, their word for it because I'll
- 2:22Speaker 2: be honest, I'm still skeptical in the long run that,
- 2:26Speaker 2: the pole ads wouldn't sell if someone came in and said, Hey,
- 2:29Speaker 2: here's $ 3 billion, which I don't think the twins will get.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But I mean, anyways, it's neither here nor there. At
- 2:35Speaker 2: the time, there's nothing going on there. This is wholly
- 2:38Speaker 2: inaccurate and there's no smoke to it. Checked, checked early on,
- 2:43Speaker 2: then checked with a team source earlier this morning to
- 2:47Speaker 2: just to, to verify. And like, there's nothing at all.
- 2:52Speaker 2: And yeah, The first person I talked to said maybe
- 2:55Speaker 2: they would be, especially given who the suggestion was, was
- 2:59Speaker 2: maybe another small limited partnership group was going to come in.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Maybe that was a possibility. And that was shot down
- 3:06Speaker 2: by everyone that that other person talked to. So basically, no,
- 3:13Speaker 2: there's nothing going on. And Tom Paul, I'm just pretty
- 3:16Speaker 2: clear about it. And Zach, I think, can you bring
- 3:18Speaker 2: up those quotes from him.
- 3:20Speaker 1: At the press conference? Absolutely. Look, you said that.
- 3:24Speaker 2: We're long-term oriented. There's a partnership in place here. The
- 3:34Speaker 2: partnership is the part that makes me think potentially this
- 3:37Speaker 2: team could sell, right? Because look, that group is somewhere
- 3:41Speaker 2: in the 35% range. And that group definitely is not
- 3:47Speaker 2: looking for a path to power. There was no path
- 3:50Speaker 2: to power previously. identified in this. What that essentially means
- 3:53Speaker 2: is all these rich people gave the Polads a bailout
- 3:57Speaker 2: that helped them pay down the debt. When your debt
- 4:01Speaker 2: was $ 500 million, your debt service was somewhere around a
- 4:04Speaker 2: $ 50 million payment annually at that point. They brought the
- 4:08Speaker 2: debt down to somewhere in the $ 180 to $ 200 million range.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Imagine everybody has a credit card and you pay off
- 4:15Speaker 2: a monthly amount unless you're fortunate enough to pay it
- 4:17Speaker 2: all the way off and have zero balance. You know
- 4:20Speaker 2: that the percentage, you know, it's a pain in the ass. Well,
- 4:24Speaker 2: their percentage is 10%. And to go from a $ 50
- 4:29Speaker 2: million annual fee to pay to service that debt to
- 4:32Speaker 2: an 18 to $ 20 million, you know, that's, that's a
- 4:35Speaker 2: significant chunk of change that pays for their target field.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I think target field, it costs them like 25 million
- 4:40Speaker 2: every year to play target field.
- 4:42Speaker 1: This is a lot of math.
- 4:42Speaker 2: That alone.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It is a lot of math. And anyways, these limited
- 4:47Speaker 2: partners came in and they gave them the money to
- 4:49Speaker 2: pay it down. And again, they didn't say we want
- 4:52Speaker 2: to take over. They just came in and said, we
- 4:54Speaker 2: want to have some say here, but they knew they'd
- 4:57Speaker 2: have limited set. Their involvement with our path to power
- 5:01Speaker 2: makes me ultimately think long-term, this could happen that the
- 5:04Speaker 2: twins could be sold, but I wouldn't think it would
- 5:07Speaker 2: be till after the labor. And, and you know, when
- 5:10Speaker 2: the national, the new TV plan comes in, right.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Those are all the next lot of stuff. But I
- 5:16Speaker 1: don't think, I don't.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Think, that means anything's imminent either. The way Tom Pollard
- 5:23Speaker 2: talked about it, he's invigorated, he likes this job, they
- 5:26Speaker 2: have a lot of work to do, and he sees
- 5:28Speaker 2: it as a long-term goal. Okay, I'll take him for
- 5:31Speaker 2: his word, but he's not going to turn around and
- 5:33Speaker 2: sell the team a week after saying that. There's just
- 5:37Speaker 2: zero truth to the idea that they are being sold
- 5:40Speaker 2: right now.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I think the pilot light is always on when it
- 5:45Speaker 1: comes to Ownership and if someone wants to talk, I'm
- 5:50Speaker 1: going to listen.
- 5:51Speaker 3: You're going to beat down the door with a bag
- 5:53Speaker 3: of money. Okay, we'll listen.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Charlie's report doesn't say it's imminent, but that's kind of
- 6:01Speaker 1: part of the problem. I don't want to get too
- 6:04Speaker 1: behind the curtain on journalism for everybody, but the key
- 6:08Speaker 1: phrase that he has is, like I said, is said
- 6:12Speaker 1: to be heating up. A sale of the twins to
- 6:13Speaker 1: the New York-based global investment firm, is it Vardy Partners?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Do we know how to say that?
- 6:18Speaker 2: Verde.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Verde? Or is it Vardy?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Vardy?
- 6:21Speaker 1: Is it V-A-R-D-E?
- 6:23Speaker 4: Well, not Vardy.
- 6:24Speaker 1: A sale of the twins to this group is said
- 6:26Speaker 1: to be heating up. That really could mean anything. Heating
- 6:29Speaker 1: up could mean they had dinner together and the subject
- 6:32Speaker 1: came up, but it's still a long, long way from happening.
- 6:35Speaker 4: They're talking free agency and we need some cash.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but I... And I don't think you try to
- 6:40Speaker 1: sell the team last year and then now this year
- 6:42Speaker 1: all of a sudden it's completely off the table to
- 6:44Speaker 1: your point, Dan. And I think all this Tom Polad
- 6:49Speaker 1: trying to say, we're out here, we're going to spend,
- 6:51Speaker 1: we're going to build this team and make it competitive. Obviously,
- 6:54Speaker 1: there's a nice side benefit of that if it happens
- 6:56Speaker 1: for the Polads. Correct. They'll start filling target field. The
- 6:59Speaker 1: team will look more attractive on the balance sheet and
- 7:01Speaker 1: all that. But no. It's the stuff he has to say, right?
- 7:05Speaker 1: He does... Right.
- 7:07Speaker 2: He has to say that and we acknowledge that. Some
- 7:12Speaker 2: of that can be lip service. I am still skeptical
- 7:16Speaker 2: just based on the fact that you have investors, they
- 7:19Speaker 2: probably want to turn around on their profit. They want
- 7:20Speaker 2: to profit. I don't see people putting in money. I mean,
- 7:24Speaker 2: it is possible because it is Varde, you're correct, and
- 7:28Speaker 2: it's Minneapolis-based. slash New York.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I tell you that now we're going Vardy. All right.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I know, I know George Hicks is part of, I
- 7:38Speaker 2: believe he's part of that group and he is a part,
- 7:41Speaker 2: like a partial owner of the wolves too. So like,
- 7:44Speaker 2: I do believe there's some, some like people in this group,
- 7:48Speaker 2: there's Minnesotans in this group that want the twins to
- 7:51Speaker 2: succeed and go the right direction. I think that's one
- 7:53Speaker 2: part that's worked when Tom talked about the partnership working
- 7:57Speaker 2: well so far. I think there's a lot of like-minded
- 8:00Speaker 2: people in there that want to see this franchise go
- 8:02Speaker 2: the right way. Also, do I think that if they
- 8:06Speaker 2: got a bag of cash thrown their way in a
- 8:09Speaker 2: year and they got $ 3 billion, like the Padres.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Sold for $ 3.
- 8:13Speaker 2: 9 billion and the Angels sold for $ 4 billion, right?
- 8:17Speaker 2: Do I think that if they got a bag of cash,
- 8:19Speaker 2: they would go, you know, we bought in.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I would deal with being a hypocrite for that much money.
- 8:22Speaker 1: No problem. Correct.
- 8:25Speaker 4: It's never an if if someone would buy a team.
- 8:27Speaker 4: It's just when.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I think, I believe, and look, I've definitely blocked out
- 8:34Speaker 2: a lot of this stuff mentally because all that sales
- 8:37Speaker 2: stuff was so stressful to report on last year. But
- 8:40Speaker 2: I believe everybody bought in at a valuation of $ 1. 75 billion. Meaning,
- 8:46Speaker 2: so if they had bought the entire team, they would
- 8:50Speaker 2: have paid 1.75. So they paid their increment in that.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So if you bought 2%, whatever 2% of 1.75 billion is,
- 8:58Speaker 2: that's what you paid for it, right? If someone told
- 9:01Speaker 2: them they could get $ 3 billion for the Twins or
- 9:04Speaker 2: 2.5 billion, you don't think they'd take that fat profit?
- 9:08Speaker 2: I mean, I just, like, it makes, like, I think...
- 9:13Speaker 2: that possibility just always exists because you never know if
- 9:16Speaker 2: Santa Claus is coming through the door with that kind
- 9:18Speaker 2: of cash. But like for now, no, no, there's nothing
- 9:23Speaker 2: to this. And I know that, that they're a little
- 9:26Speaker 2: frustrated that, so, you know, I, I think they saw
- 9:32Speaker 2: this as year one and they want to keep going forward.
- 9:35Speaker 1: This, this nugget from Charlie appeared at the bottom of
- 9:40Speaker 1: a column where the headline was, Aaron Jones's toughness, question mark,
- 9:44Speaker 1: it's all in his heart. It was a Viking story.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think he does this note style thing all the time,
- 9:51Speaker 1: which don't get me started on uh, old habits dying
- 9:54Speaker 1: hard in this industry. But the, the, the nugget appears like,
- 9:59Speaker 1: I don't know, a halfway down this, this notes column
- 10:02Speaker 1: under a subheading that says, don't print that. Love that. And, uh,
- 10:07Speaker 1: and I'm guessing that's a regular shtick of his. I'm sorry.
- 10:11Speaker 2: It is. It is.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but like, again, a little behind
- 10:16Speaker 1: the green, like if this was really a thing, they
- 10:20Speaker 1: should have blown it up as its own story. Right.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And the fact that they didn't makes me think either
- 10:26Speaker 1: the editors whiffed on this one or that it's just,
- 10:29Speaker 1: there's not a ton of meat on the bone there.
- 10:31Speaker 1: And again, like these things can, can become serious at
- 10:34Speaker 1: any given time. Um, but for now it sure sounds
- 10:38Speaker 1: like there's nothing there. I'll trust you on that, Dan. Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Some, I, I, you know, look, I will tell you
- 10:47Speaker 2: guys the worst day of last year. With the fire sale,
- 10:51Speaker 2: with everything that went on for that 2025 Twins team,
- 10:55Speaker 2: by far the worst day online. I think it was
- 10:58Speaker 2: August 13th when Joe Polad said, we're just pulling back
- 11:05Speaker 2: the sale. And I think they acknowledged they were doing
- 11:07Speaker 2: a partial sale. And at the time said, we're the
- 11:11Speaker 2: right ones to lead the franchise. And I was just like,
- 11:15Speaker 2: I remember reporting it. or I remember it being reported
- 11:18Speaker 2: and just the reaction online was so dark and negative.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And that's where the 4.3 percenters were kind of born
- 11:25Speaker 2: was because so many fans were dismayed by that. And
- 11:28Speaker 2: I get, yeah, I get it that I get why
- 11:31Speaker 2: fans are tired of the ownership group. Like it's, they've
- 11:35Speaker 2: been here for 42 years and they, they think they
- 11:40Speaker 2: hear the same thing. I mean, they do look, there's,
- 11:43Speaker 2: They need evidence to what's being claimed.
- 11:45Speaker 1: It has been consistent.
- 11:46Speaker 2: They're going to spend more money, right? And so the
- 11:49Speaker 2: fans have a right to want to move on. And
- 11:54Speaker 2: I know everybody gets their hopes up when there's the
- 11:56Speaker 2: potential for it. But it's not happening now. And I
- 11:59Speaker 2: think this will be a really big offseason for the
- 12:01Speaker 2: Polad family, the show, to back up. And we've talked
- 12:05Speaker 2: about this ad nausea. It's time to back up what
- 12:09Speaker 2: you're saying you're going to do and support the roster.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I still love that quote from Tom that it's now
- 12:14Speaker 2: on ownership to support this team. We have the core
- 12:17Speaker 2: in place. It's on ownership to give them the support
- 12:20Speaker 2: they require.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Well, that's a hell of a segue, Dan, because the
- 12:24Speaker 1: next question on the list is about that very topic.
- 12:28Speaker 1: We initially asked for questions on YouTube on Monday's video,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but the comments section became a.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Kind of battleground for brewers and twins fans to argue. Yeah,
- 12:40Speaker 1: maybe not even that, but it was just a lot of,
- 12:43Speaker 1: a lot of, uh, comment about the video, which is great.
- 12:45Speaker 1: But this is one question, uh, that we did get
- 12:47Speaker 1: in there. Do you believe that Tom Polad will spend
- 12:50Speaker 1: what's needed to make the twins competitive? Is Jeremy Zoll
- 12:52Speaker 1: the right person for GM or should they have looked elsewhere?
- 12:55Speaker 1: What will the twins do at catcher and first base positions? I,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I kind of forgot there was three questions in there,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but we're focusing on the first part. Um, Will they
- 13:05Speaker 1: spend what's necessary? I wrote on the screen here, it's
- 13:07Speaker 1: a complicated question because, and I'll start with you, Tyler,
- 13:09Speaker 1: since Dan starred in the last answer. There are five
- 13:16Speaker 1: teams that still have a chance to win the World
- 13:19Speaker 1: Series this year. A grand total of one of them
- 13:21Speaker 1: is in the top 18 in payroll. The Dodgers are
- 13:24Speaker 1: the last high payroll team left. The Brewers are 19th.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And all three teams that are left in the AL
- 13:30Speaker 1: playoffs are or actually had a lower payroll than the
- 13:33Speaker 1: Twins on opening day. Now that's a little deceptive because
- 13:36Speaker 1: the Twins obviously paying a lot to Pablo Lopez and
- 13:39Speaker 1: Carlos Correa, who didn't play this year for different reasons.
- 13:43Speaker 1: But still, the point is, it's not so much about
- 13:46Speaker 1: a number, and Paulette and Zill talk about this in
- 13:49Speaker 1: the press conference, but it's about spending it in the
- 13:51Speaker 1: right ways. Yeah, and I kind of hit on it already,
- 13:56Speaker 1: and we're going to talk about him soon, but my
- 13:58Speaker 1: example is, you go spend a hundred million on Ryan Jeffers,
- 14:02Speaker 1: you know, how much does that change scenery for the twins?
- 14:06Speaker 3: It's, it's bringing in, you know, we brought in Carlos.
- 14:09Speaker 3: It went how it went. We made the playoffs, things
- 14:11Speaker 3: like that. You can go sign anyone in the world
- 14:15Speaker 3: and it's never a guarantee that it's going to work.
- 14:17Speaker 3: And it's the unfortunate part of our game is you
- 14:21Speaker 3: can try to win over and over again.
- 14:24Speaker 4: And sometimes it just doesn't work out.
- 14:26Speaker 3: And then you see these teams like the white socks who,
- 14:28Speaker 3: They went through the dip of the really bad 100-loss seasons.
- 14:32Speaker 3: I think they set a record with 113 or something.
- 14:35Speaker 3: It's now all their homegrown guys, all their draft picks,
- 14:38Speaker 3: all these guys who the Twins are in the middle of.
- 14:41Speaker 3: They're letting go of guys who have been around the
- 14:43Speaker 3: organization a long time and scouting and things like that.
- 14:46Speaker 3: There's a lot of turnover happening now and kind of
- 14:49Speaker 3: into the Jay-Z part of that question. Jeremy Zoll is
- 14:53Speaker 3: a guy who's been around for all these young guys
- 14:55Speaker 3: getting drafted and coming up through the org. He was
- 14:58Speaker 3: running the minor leagues for a while, and so he's
- 15:01Speaker 3: very familiar with all of these guys and how they operate.
- 15:04Speaker 3: And he knows the coaching staffs. He knows top to
- 15:06Speaker 3: bottom this organization. So a guy like him sliding into
- 15:10Speaker 3: the role he's in now, I think, is perfect. And
- 15:13Speaker 3: then the predictability of free agents is the gamble of
- 15:16Speaker 3: sports in general.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Everybody's got a plan until.
- 15:21Speaker 3: The $ 400 million guy gets hurt, and then what do
- 15:24Speaker 3: you do? Aaron Judge didn't take an at-bat in the postseason.
- 15:27Speaker 3: It took one, maybe. I can't remember exactly. But that's
- 15:31Speaker 3: a perfect example. You can pay anybody in the world
- 15:33Speaker 3: all this money. At the end of the day, the
- 15:36Speaker 3: cards have to come out in your favor. So the Twins,
- 15:39Speaker 3: I think they're in a spot where they don't necessarily
- 15:41Speaker 3: have to go get this crazy piece. They need a
- 15:47Speaker 3: power hitting first baseman. you know, maybe another power bat,
- 15:50Speaker 3: whatever it is, but like the core is there. Your
- 15:53Speaker 3: young guys are there. That's why the payroll is low. Frankly,
- 15:57Speaker 3: it's because you have young guys that have come up
- 15:59Speaker 3: through your org and that's, you know, it can skew
- 16:01Speaker 3: the numbers sometimes when you have a bunch of rookies
- 16:03Speaker 3: on your team that are good. It's like, Oh, well,
- 16:05Speaker 3: they're not paying anybody. It's like, well, they're only making 700,000.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Affordable, you know? Yeah. You know?
- 16:09Speaker 3: And then they, when, when all of these guys hit arbitration,
- 16:12Speaker 3: which we've hit on too, like that's going to bump
- 16:15Speaker 3: up spending alone just from having to pay all you know,
- 16:18Speaker 3: the Taj Bradley's Joe Ryan's, you know, I've been blanking
- 16:21Speaker 3: now of all who's there, but it's, it's one, it's
- 16:25Speaker 3: going to happen naturally. And then you make sure you just,
- 16:28Speaker 3: you do your homework as best you can. Try not
- 16:31Speaker 3: to blow it all on one guy. Maybe get a
- 16:33Speaker 3: couple of guys instead of one huge deal. But if
- 16:37Speaker 3: there's a big time, all-star bat that wants to come
- 16:39Speaker 3: play for you, bring them home and let them do
- 16:42Speaker 3: his thing.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Dan.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So bullpen, that's where you can spend twins typically are
- 16:51Speaker 2: not a team that's since I've covered the team, which
- 16:53Speaker 2: started in 2018, the only guy they really paid, uh,
- 16:57Speaker 2: gave a contract to free agent wise was Addison Reed.
- 17:00Speaker 2: He got two years and 9 million a year. He
- 17:02Speaker 2: had two and 18. I believe that's the biggest, um,
- 17:06Speaker 2: just the biggest amount that the twins have given to
- 17:09Speaker 2: a reliever in that time. Now, Jeff Hoffman will make
- 17:11Speaker 2: more than that next year. Uh, frankly, I think I
- 17:14Speaker 2: liked a lot what I saw from Jeff Hoffman, uh,
- 17:17Speaker 2: Get another guy that's, you know, of his ilk, someone
- 17:21Speaker 2: that can come in and get big outs so that
- 17:24Speaker 2: Andrew Morris, Jeff Hoffman, Yoandris Gomez, that reliever, and then
- 17:29Speaker 2: spend on a lefty reliever too. You know, spend $ 22 million,
- 17:33Speaker 2: spend $ 11 million on two relievers. Bring in two guys
- 17:37Speaker 2: that are just arms and go away because it's going
- 17:41Speaker 2: to be hard with the amount of, like, you look
- 17:44Speaker 2: around how many guys on that position side are minimum
- 17:49Speaker 2: salary or.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Close to it.
- 17:50Speaker 2: And if Jenkins and Rodriguez are here and Kieschel, those
- 17:55Speaker 2: three are all minimum salaries. Brooks Lee is a minimum salary.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Kalen Culpepper would be minimum salary. Ryan Cryler would be
- 18:01Speaker 2: minimum salary. Cody Clemens will get a raise. He's, I believe,
- 18:05Speaker 2: in his first year of ARB. He'll get a nice
- 18:07Speaker 2: little raise.
- 18:07Speaker 4: He'll make a couple million.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:13Speaker 2: And there's not a catcher that's out there aside from
- 18:16Speaker 2: Ryan Jeffers, in free agency to spend on. So you're
- 18:20Speaker 2: going to probably end up spending not as much as him. Now,
- 18:23Speaker 2: if he came back on a qualifying offer, that would
- 18:26Speaker 2: quickly boost up, and I know that's another question we'll
- 18:28Speaker 2: get to, it would quickly boost up your salary. So
- 18:33Speaker 2: I think it'll have to be on pitching and depth pieces,
- 18:37Speaker 2: because that's where the Twins really succeeded in 2023. They
- 18:40Speaker 2: spent $ 11 million on Joey Gallo. They spent They threw
- 18:45Speaker 2: Vasquez that $ 30 million three-year deal that ended up being
- 18:48Speaker 2: an overpay. But they got Michael A.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Taylor.
- 18:52Speaker 2: They got Donovan Solano for $ 2 million at the end
- 18:55Speaker 2: of spring training. And they inched their way up to
- 18:58Speaker 2: like $ 156. 7 million that year. It's the depth pieces that
- 19:02Speaker 2: will be where they probably spend. But I think the
- 19:07Speaker 2: biggest area of expenditure will be bullpen. And I do
- 19:09Speaker 2: think they see that. they saw those early lessons and
- 19:13Speaker 2: they know they got lucky with Gomez and Morris developing
- 19:16Speaker 2: the way they did.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Those guys saved the season.
- 19:18Speaker 2: If they didn't develop, that's a 90 loss team, 95
- 19:21Speaker 2: loss team. And they came along and helped write the
- 19:25Speaker 2: bullpen along with Bonda. So bullpen, I do think it'll happen.
- 19:29Speaker 2: I just don't think it's going to be hit you
- 19:32Speaker 2: over the head.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Like here's $ 50 million.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Yeah. It won't be the big deal. It'll be a
- 19:38Speaker 4: lot of, you know, mid range.
- 19:40Speaker 1: But I think the bullpen is– like if there's one
- 19:43Speaker 1: area that you have to beef up most, that's probably
- 19:46Speaker 1: the best one for the Twins because I just– I
- 19:48Speaker 1: feel like it's more realistic that they're going to bring
- 19:50Speaker 1: in solid again, though, then like a, then like a
- 19:53Speaker 1: flashy hitter who's going to come out, you know.
- 19:55Speaker 4: 25 million.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:57Speaker 2: The pins are so volatile.
- 20:02Speaker 1: It's like, as a bad year, it's unpredictable for sure. Yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Addison Reed for that matter.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Like I was with him and he was, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 3: showed up to spring training and he was like, yeah,
- 20:12Speaker 3: I don't know what's going on. I'm throwing 88 miles
- 20:14Speaker 3: an hour. And it was like, they had him on
- 20:16Speaker 3: weighted ball programs and this and that. And it was
- 20:18Speaker 3: just like, he, they caught the tail end and it
- 20:21Speaker 3: just didn't work. And it's just like, sometimes that's baseball.
- 20:25Speaker 3: And like, I think it's interesting. The bullpen stuff is
- 20:29Speaker 3: intriguing because there's everyone throws stuff. Now it's literally finding
- 20:35Speaker 3: the guy who's going to run hot for six months
- 20:37Speaker 3: and and capitalize. And it's, you see it every year.
- 20:40Speaker 3: You could probably go across the league in a lot
- 20:42Speaker 3: of bullpens where it's like, so-and-so came up from AAA
- 20:45Speaker 3: and has had a one ERA this year. Like it's just,
- 20:49Speaker 3: sometimes it just clicks and you don't have to think
- 20:51Speaker 3: and you just go. And that's the, the toughest part.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You know, all the projection models try to tell you,
- 20:57Speaker 3: you know, Hey, we can expect these numbers from this guy,
- 21:02Speaker 3: but until they're in there and do it, you know
- 21:03Speaker 3: what I mean? Gomez, Gomez is the example. Like he
- 21:06Speaker 3: got let go from the race and, Twins grabbed him
- 21:08Speaker 3: for cash, and he was the closer and closed 25 straight.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Did the Rays expect that to happen? Absolutely not.
- 21:15Speaker 3: They let him go. And the Twins were just hoping
- 21:18Speaker 3: it worked out, and they got a steal of a
- 21:20Speaker 3: deal on him. And so that's a great example of
- 21:24Speaker 3: a guy. Sometimes you get lucky, and a guy runs
- 21:27Speaker 3: hot for you for a year, and then it's gone.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Baseball now is such a, what have you done for
- 21:33Speaker 3: me lately? And it's such a year-to-year thing, it feels like,
- 21:36Speaker 3: other than A select few guys.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Just bring a bunch of guys into camp, break a
- 21:41Speaker 1: pool stick, let them fight. That's basically it.
- 21:45Speaker 4: We're having tryouts.
- 21:47Speaker 2: That's some good Dark Knight stuff there.
- 21:50Speaker 4: We're having tryouts.
- 21:54Speaker 1: The most important spend the Twins can make probably is
- 21:58Speaker 1: time and coaching on their own players. If these young
- 22:03Speaker 1: players get better, That's probably the biggest– I mean, Taj Bradley, Kieschel,
- 22:08Speaker 1: Brooks Lee, all the rookies. If those guys keep going upward,
- 22:12Speaker 1: then they've got something that they're not going to get.
- 22:15Speaker 3: And the rotation could be so good next year, assuming
- 22:18Speaker 3: everything goes perfect. Everything is going to go perfect this offseason.
- 22:22Speaker 3: The rotation is already set. Guys are going to get
- 22:25Speaker 3: bumped out is what's going to happen.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Rotation is set.
- 22:28Speaker 4: They have a chance to be really good.
- 22:29Speaker 1: They still were tied for ninth in baseball and run
- 22:32Speaker 1: scored even after that terrible last month and a half.
- 22:36Speaker 1: They can hit pretty well. If they can get better
- 22:38Speaker 1: at that, if the starting pitching is healthy, it really
- 22:40Speaker 1: comes down to what can they do in that bullpen.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And it's not hard to imagine a mid-80s win team
- 22:46Speaker 1: all of a sudden, if not more. If, if, if, if, if, if, if,
- 22:50Speaker 1: I know. We'll see. We've already mentioned Ryan Jeffers, but
- 22:56Speaker 1: this was another common– theme question that we got a
- 22:59Speaker 1: couple of questions about him. I'll just sum these up. Basically,
- 23:02Speaker 1: one of them is asking, um, it with the looming lockout, if,
- 23:05Speaker 1: if that might actually work in the twins favor to
- 23:07Speaker 1: be able to sign Jeffers to a qualifying offer because
- 23:11Speaker 1: teams may be less interested. The other question is saying,
- 23:13Speaker 1: can the twins just live without Ryan Jeffers? Do they
- 23:16Speaker 1: need to invest in him? I think these are both
- 23:17Speaker 1: topics we've kind of touched on already in other shows, but, um, Tyler,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I think like both those things are possible, but The
- 23:25Speaker 1: more we talk about it, the more it seems like
- 23:27Speaker 1: it just does not make sense for a big long-term
- 23:30Speaker 1: offer for Jeffers for the Twins.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Yeah, and to that point, they're going to have to
- 23:36Speaker 3: blow him away with an offer, I think.
- 23:38Speaker 4: They're going to give him the qualifying offer.
- 23:41Speaker 3: I think that's a 99.99% thing, but he's not going
- 23:46Speaker 3: to take it, I would really assume. Unless he's getting
- 23:51Speaker 3: four for 80 deals or whatever, I don't know.
- 23:54Speaker 4: I don't know any.
- 23:55Speaker 1: World where he'd do that. Hang on. Hang on.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Why wouldn't he take four for 80?
- 24:00Speaker 1: That's one for 23.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Because we don't know what he wants. We don't know
- 24:06Speaker 4: what he wants and what Mr.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Boris is going to expect for him being the big dog.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Because he is the big dog of the catchers. So, like,
- 24:13Speaker 3: he's going to get a blank check from a lot
- 24:15Speaker 3: of people. And baseball, I mean, values are going up.
- 24:19Speaker 3: We're talking about the Twins. Like, if they got offered, like,
- 24:22Speaker 3: teams have money. And everyone knows that. And, you know,
- 24:25Speaker 3: to get the best, you're going to pay for it.
- 24:27Speaker 3: And to that point, though, it's $ 23 million, I think,
- 24:30Speaker 3: is what the projection is now. Like, you know, that's
- 24:33Speaker 3: a life-changing amount of money for anybody. But when you
- 24:36Speaker 3: have a chance to get way more than that, like
- 24:39Speaker 3: you're especially being healthy going into the offseason, like there's
- 24:41Speaker 3: no way he's going to take it. But I think
- 24:44Speaker 3: the Twins will shoot their shot after that and, you know,
- 24:48Speaker 3: try to give him a legit offer.
- 24:49Speaker 1: But I just.
- 24:50Speaker 3: frankly, I just don't see it because there's going to
- 24:52Speaker 3: be somebody that's willing to go above for, for no
- 24:55Speaker 3: reason other than they want him and they can afford it.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Well, so look, he's 29 right now. He doesn't turn
- 25:02Speaker 2: 30 till June. So yes, you're right in assuming I'm
- 25:06Speaker 2: guessing the aim is five and maybe a six year deal, right?
- 25:09Speaker 2: There's no question that that's on the table. You have
- 25:12Speaker 2: about a month between the end of the world series
- 25:15Speaker 2: and lockout. Um, can that deal materialize in that timeframe?
- 25:20Speaker 2: That would be because we saw this happen to Carlos
- 25:22Speaker 2: Correa where Carlos Correa was big deal hunting going into
- 25:26Speaker 2: the 2022 off season. So end of 2021, right before
- 25:30Speaker 2: the lock, the lockout hit December 20, December one, 2021
- 25:34Speaker 2: Correa was a free agent looking for a big time deal.
- 25:37Speaker 2: He switched agencies when his first agency struck out, went
- 25:41Speaker 2: to Boris and had to settle for the pillow contract
- 25:45Speaker 2: that the The Twins offered him the safety contract at
- 25:48Speaker 2: the Twins, the three-year $ 105 million deal that had opt-outs.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Carlos fell into $ 35 million annually because he was so good.
- 25:59Speaker 2: All about the war. He could command that, right? So
- 26:05Speaker 2: could that kind of situation happen to Jeffers where the
- 26:09Speaker 2: lockout gets in the way?
- 26:11Speaker 1: Possibly, yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Okay, look. But even so, he's the only catcher that's
- 26:16Speaker 2: out there. At the time that Correa was a free agent,
- 26:19Speaker 2: I think– was that around– I mean, look, there were
- 26:23Speaker 2: a lot of guys that got in that couple years,
- 26:25Speaker 2: got big deals at shortstop. I want to say Javi
- 26:28Speaker 2: Baez got his deal from Detroit.
- 26:30Speaker 4: And Trey Turner was right around there somewhere.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I think Javi Baez got to Detroit before Correa could
- 26:40Speaker 2: and a more affordable amount.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 2: So I think that played into his situation, but I
- 26:48Speaker 2: don't see Jeffers expecting his market to not be there.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I mean, just based off the trade talks around Jeffers,
- 26:55Speaker 2: there was a lot of interest. There are no catchers
- 26:58Speaker 2: out there, especially 29 year old catchers. He's a young,
- 27:01Speaker 2: healthy catcher. Now, will he get the six years he
- 27:05Speaker 2: wants or the five years? Could it be four and 80?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Like you said, I still think Ryan Jeffers is a
- 27:12Speaker 2: smart man. And if you got four and 80, he'd
- 27:14Speaker 2: take it. He'd take that way faster than one in 23.
- 27:17Speaker 2: I mean, it's more of.
- 27:19Speaker 3: The AAV, you know, I know the guys want their
- 27:22Speaker 3: annual value up, you know, and to that point is like,
- 27:25Speaker 3: if he thinks he could double down and you know,
- 27:27Speaker 3: like the Trevor Bowers, if it's like, I know what
- 27:30Speaker 3: I'm worth, like I'm going to run it back again,
- 27:31Speaker 3: you know? Cause like the other side, like I remember
- 27:34Speaker 3: Mike Moustakis, I think had the qualifying offer and then
- 27:37Speaker 3: his market like fell apart that year. And he ended
- 27:39Speaker 3: up having to take a bad deal. And it's just
- 27:41Speaker 3: like sometimes, you know, you have it in the hand already.
- 27:45Speaker 3: It's a lot better than searching.
- 27:47Speaker 4: So I don't know.
- 27:48Speaker 3: And you never know what guys are thinking, man. Lockout
- 27:51Speaker 3: does crazy things. People are going to get worried. It's
- 27:53Speaker 3: going to be like that flurry once the season ends
- 27:56Speaker 3: and then nothing until the two weeks before spring, whenever
- 27:59Speaker 3: that ends up being.
- 28:00Speaker 4: And it's just going to be a war zone.
- 28:02Speaker 2: He handled the pressure of his walk year very well
- 28:04Speaker 2: this year. I don't think he wants to go through
- 28:06Speaker 2: that again, though. Like he got the free– Hamate bone,
- 28:11Speaker 2: broken Hamate bone and, and had to come back from
- 28:14Speaker 2: that and still put.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Up or he could hit 40 next year.
- 28:17Speaker 1: And you know, sure.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Great.
- 28:20Speaker 1: He'll be 30.
- 28:21Speaker 2: He'll be 30 going into his 31 then.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Yeah. It's all, it's all about timing, right? Like if,
- 28:26Speaker 1: if he had, if that injury had, if that injury
- 28:28Speaker 1: had been worse, yeah. If that injury had been worse
- 28:31Speaker 1: or he just had a down year and if he
- 28:32Speaker 1: was the, you know, fourth best catcher on the market
- 28:35Speaker 1: because of the circumstances, then maybe you say, I'll take
- 28:38Speaker 1: the QO. I'll come back. try this again next year,
- 28:40Speaker 1: but you can't like, you just had a great year.
- 28:43Speaker 1: You're the top catcher. Like, yeah, yeah. You can't, you can't.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Even if it was a, even if he had to
- 28:48Speaker 2: take a two and 50 million in March, because he
- 28:52Speaker 2: would take that, but also you have to make a
- 28:54Speaker 2: decision at that point. He would have already had to
- 28:57Speaker 2: make this decision on the qualifying offer by that point. Anyways, you,
- 29:02Speaker 2: you made the offer, you get a certain window. He'll
- 29:04Speaker 2: have to decide by mid November, whether or not he
- 29:07Speaker 2: accepts it. They'll know his market at that point.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:10Speaker 4: We will know pre-lockout whether he's a twin or not.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I'll put it that way. Before the lockout happens, we
- 29:16Speaker 1: will know. I think we didn't really address the other
- 29:20Speaker 1: question about whether the twins should even really want to
- 29:23Speaker 1: spend the money to bring him back, but I think
- 29:25Speaker 1: we have talked about that in the past. I'll be
- 29:28Speaker 1: brief on that. I'll be brief on that. Look, five years, great.
- 29:31Speaker 2: How's Ryan Jeffers going to be holding up physically at
- 29:33Speaker 2: the end of five years as a catcher? This is
- 29:35Speaker 2: a guy that doesn't... The one downside to his game
- 29:38Speaker 2: is the blocking aspect. I think he's... great at– man,
- 29:42Speaker 2: he's a stud at challenges. And I do think that
- 29:45Speaker 2: that's going to be something that Scott Boris learns how
- 29:47Speaker 2: to negotiate into these.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, there's win probability added, and Ryan Jeffers added a
- 29:54Speaker 2: ton of it. I think he was the second highest
- 29:55Speaker 2: catcher in win– he's definitely top ten in win probability added.
- 30:00Speaker 2: um that's a good skill to have I just saw
- 30:02Speaker 2: the White Sox give away two early in game three
- 30:05Speaker 2: of the ALDS yesterday and it cost them um and
- 30:10Speaker 2: Jeffers knows how to use it knows when to use
- 30:12Speaker 2: it like leverage moments that kind of thing he's really
- 30:15Speaker 2: good at it um to me having Jeffers for two
- 30:19Speaker 2: of those five years and then letting Von Lackey play
- 30:22Speaker 2: his way in that's awesome that would be I would
- 30:25Speaker 2: do that.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I think it makes a lot of sense on a
- 30:27Speaker 1: qualifying offer for sure.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Yeah, qualifying offer buys you a year. Lackey can keep
- 30:33Speaker 4: playing with no pressure.
- 30:34Speaker 1: It's long-term. Right, right.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Then can you trade him in two years? I think
- 30:41Speaker 2: the team's there. And also, by the way, aren't the
- 30:44Speaker 2: Yankees going to– say the Yankees are the team that
- 30:46Speaker 2: goes after him. Are the Twins going to compete with
- 30:49Speaker 2: that offer? Because that's going to be a healthy offer
- 30:52Speaker 2: if that team really wants him. And so that's the, the,
- 30:56Speaker 2: he has demand on his side. And I think that's
- 30:59Speaker 2: what ultimately leaves the Yankees or not the Yankees. I ultimately,
- 31:03Speaker 2: I think that's what leads him to another team.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Another question that came up was about the twins, you know,
- 31:11Speaker 1: we talked on Monday show about, you know, how the
- 31:14Speaker 1: Brewers had done a nice job of signing some key
- 31:17Speaker 1: pieces before they really had to. And so, um, the
- 31:21Speaker 1: question that we got was if you could lock up
- 31:23Speaker 1: one young guy long-term this winter, who would it be?
- 31:27Speaker 1: I guess young is in the eye of the beholder
- 31:30Speaker 1: here on what you think are, that qualifies for that.
- 31:34Speaker 1: But I have Luke Kieschel's picture with this segment. So
- 31:39Speaker 1: I think he's an obvious candidate. Brooks Lee is on
- 31:41Speaker 1: that list for me, but Dan, before I take every
- 31:44Speaker 1: possible answer, why don't you say who you would sign? Okay.
- 31:47Speaker 2: First I would do Walker Jenkins, but I don't think
- 31:50Speaker 2: he would do it. And Scott Boris, they, I believe
- 31:52Speaker 2: they don't do those contracts. I think he wants that free,
- 31:56Speaker 2: like his players hit free agency at the six year
- 31:58Speaker 2: mark and they lose some serious earning power in that
- 32:02Speaker 2: first year or two. Cause teams aim for like six
- 32:04Speaker 2: or like seven, eight, nine year, like what we were
- 32:07Speaker 2: talking about with Churia with those options.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:10Speaker 2: And that's at a point where Walker Jenkins, who is
- 32:13Speaker 2: only 21 would be 27 hitting free agency. You know,
- 32:16Speaker 2: that's as Doug Baker used to say, that's when you
- 32:18Speaker 2: get your man muscles. That's when you develop your real
- 32:21Speaker 2: strength is at 27. That'd be a prime time if
- 32:27Speaker 2: you're an agent to put your client like that in
- 32:30Speaker 2: the market. So Walker Jenkins to me isn't really a possibility.
- 32:34Speaker 2: I'll be pleasantly surprised if that happens. So I'm going
- 32:37Speaker 2: with Keyshaw. I love what he brings. I think he
- 32:40Speaker 2: is the kind of guy, he doesn't care about his brand.
- 32:44Speaker 2: He doesn't care about off the field stuff. He doesn't
- 32:47Speaker 2: care about being asked to play center field, which he
- 32:51Speaker 2: was ill-equipped for because he knew it meant being a
- 32:54Speaker 2: good teammate. And he did that and he struggled in
- 32:58Speaker 2: doing that. He first got moved to right field and
- 33:01Speaker 2: that was a big enough leap because he was struggling
- 33:03Speaker 2: at second base and he didn't let any of it
- 33:06Speaker 2: bug him. And I just wrote about him earlier this week.
- 33:09Speaker 2: He was off to a terrible start on May 1.
- 33:11Speaker 2: He had a 542 OPS and he was like, Hey,
- 33:15Speaker 2: Talk to me on game 162.
- 33:18Speaker 1: And guess what?
- 33:18Speaker 2: He then hit 304 with a 400-something on-base percentage the
- 33:23Speaker 2: rest of the way and 840 OPS the rest of
- 33:25Speaker 2: the way despite multiple position changes, despite dealing with expectations
- 33:31Speaker 2: for the first.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Time in his life.
- 33:33Speaker 2: It's a ball player to me. That's the guy you want.
- 33:36Speaker 2: No frills, just dirt devil, go get it, energetic guy.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Build around him.
- 33:43Speaker 1: That's my guy. It plays with his heart, honestly. It
- 33:45Speaker 1: leaves it all out there. The kind of guy who,
- 33:47Speaker 1: even if he's having a bad year, he's going to
- 33:50Speaker 1: maximize everything he can and give you something to cheer for.
- 33:53Speaker 1: I would have no qualms about giving him a contract.
- 33:57Speaker 2: I would put Kalen Culpepper very close in that. I
- 33:59Speaker 2: just want to see that they think that he is
- 34:01Speaker 2: their shortstop. I just think that I love Kalen Culpepper's
- 34:05Speaker 2: game the same way. Really, he is the two of them.
- 34:09Speaker 2: are very like-minded and their enthusiasm like that's a good
- 34:13Speaker 2: young core i just want to see that that the
- 34:15Speaker 2: shortstop is that it sticks i believe he will but
- 34:19Speaker 2: i know that they still want to see questions answered
- 34:21Speaker 2: there those are i think the twins are in very
- 34:24Speaker 2: good hands with those two guys being in the middle
- 34:27Speaker 2: of the infield um and the lineup for the next
- 34:30Speaker 2: whatever it is so.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Can you can you do that for jenkins or culpepper
- 34:36Speaker 1: without doing it for some of the guys who've been
- 34:37Speaker 1: around for a couple years tyler like in terms of
- 34:39Speaker 1: just how that plays in the clubhouse yeah i.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Think it's one too like you know these teams know
- 34:45Speaker 3: their guys they've been around them you know it's sometimes
- 34:48Speaker 3: guys get that comfortability and it helps them play better
- 34:52Speaker 3: some guys need something to play for and like those
- 34:55Speaker 3: are conversations that are had in-house you know before things
- 34:58Speaker 3: like this are done you know and a lot of
- 35:00Speaker 3: teams do but like some of the trend has been
- 35:02Speaker 3: like before they even get to the big leagues And
- 35:04Speaker 3: I think that's the real carrot being dangled. Like, hey, look,
- 35:08Speaker 3: we're going to give you this. Like, go play ball.
- 35:11Speaker 3: I think all these guys got a small sample. You know,
- 35:14Speaker 3: they got their chance to be up. Like you said,
- 35:16Speaker 3: you know, Jenkins probably won't take it. You know, a
- 35:18Speaker 3: guy like Emmanuel Rodriguez kind of comes to mind, too,
- 35:21Speaker 3: where it's like he made some impact plays early, you know,
- 35:25Speaker 3: in a small stint. You know, Culpepper had his moments, too.
- 35:28Speaker 3: You know, and it's tough, like, you know, here's one
- 35:32Speaker 3: for everybody.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Like, no.
- 35:33Speaker 3: And then sometimes you give it to the one guy
- 35:35Speaker 3: and maybe the, it elevates the guys around him. You know,
- 35:38Speaker 3: it's just, it's so hard to predict just like for agency,
- 35:41Speaker 3: like what actually is going to happen. And, you know, guys,
- 35:44Speaker 3: Keyshaw though, he's had his first full year after, you know,
- 35:47Speaker 3: getting his feet wet and he kind of hit a
- 35:50Speaker 3: stride and he's, he's the guy like on paper right now,
- 35:53Speaker 3: he is the guy to do it too. The other
- 35:55Speaker 3: one that in my head, it kind of, you know,
- 35:58Speaker 3: it's the, the what if is like a guy like Prelip,
- 36:01Speaker 3: He's had some history, whatever, but he's got some stuff
- 36:04Speaker 3: that if he maintains that for any sort of time frame,
- 36:09Speaker 3: he's going to get expensive quickly. If he can repeat
- 36:13Speaker 3: what he did this year, things like that, especially for
- 36:16Speaker 3: starting pitching. I've said this before, but those guys, once
- 36:20Speaker 3: you hit Arb as a starter, your life changes pretty quickly.
- 36:25Speaker 3: If he keeps rolling like.
- 36:26Speaker 4: He is, he's going to get expensive.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Taj Bradley? Taj is one. I didn't know how old
- 36:32Speaker 1: he was.
- 36:33Speaker 4: 25.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Maybe I'm stretching the definition of young at 25.
- 36:38Speaker 2: He's such a workhorse, man.
- 36:40Speaker 4: He's so powerful. Great candidate.
- 36:42Speaker 3: He's the one I wanted to say, but I was like,
- 36:45Speaker 3: he wasn't the young, like, the guys we were kind
- 36:48Speaker 3: of talking about.
- 36:49Speaker 4: But Taj is one I would try. Give us one
- 36:52Speaker 4: of your free agent years.
- 36:53Speaker 2: That's the good part about this, where they are. They
- 36:55Speaker 2: have five guys, six guys. seven guys that we could say,
- 36:59Speaker 2: maybe they should do this. And like, I'm, I'm on
- 37:02Speaker 2: the scared side on pre-lip just because of the injury history. Um,
- 37:07Speaker 2: you know, I, I like, but I, it's not my
- 37:09Speaker 2: money to give. And I think if the team believes it,
- 37:11Speaker 2: they will do it. Uh, Taj. Wow. He's, uh, he's a,
- 37:16Speaker 2: he's just amazing. And he's so strong and he grew
- 37:19Speaker 2: so much. Both sides of the field, the sure mentally
- 37:22Speaker 2: and physically. um, but it's a good place to be
- 37:26Speaker 2: where you can, be choosing.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Between five or six guys. Coming off injury, like injuries
- 37:32Speaker 4: in a few years.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:35Speaker 2: You would have to get really nice. You'd have to
- 37:37Speaker 2: get a very nice team friendly contract.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Right. I mean, you can give them security a little, right.
- 37:44Speaker 4: You get some value. Like it's unfortunate.
- 37:46Speaker 3: It's part of it. It's sports to whatever, but like, Hey,
- 37:49Speaker 3: you've got some injury history. We really like you here.
- 37:52Speaker 3: We want to keep you here. You know, we'll scratch
- 37:55Speaker 3: your back. You scratch ours.
- 37:56Speaker 4: So, you know, kind of thing.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And it might make sense for Prelip. I mean, he,
- 38:00Speaker 1: you know, that injury history is probably going to keep
- 38:02Speaker 1: him from getting that mega contract. Right.
- 38:05Speaker 4: Teams will be hesitant.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Right. Right.
- 38:07Speaker 2: But wouldn't, wouldn't hate, wouldn't hate if, uh, they saw
- 38:11Speaker 2: good signs from the hip. If, uh, Byron Buxton, even
- 38:14Speaker 2: though he's not a young guy, but you know, the
- 38:17Speaker 2: Warriors keep, uh, pushing Steph Curry down the road. Yeah.
- 38:20Speaker 4: How many years is left on his deal?
- 38:23Speaker 1: Two years. Yeah.
- 38:24Speaker 2: So two, um, So, you know, wouldn't really sign.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Anybody else who's over 30 you want to vouch for?
- 38:36Speaker 1: I mean, Pablo.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Josh Bell, five years.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Pablo would be interesting because he's coming back.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:44Speaker 2: He's got one year left. They have four one-year guys.
- 38:47Speaker 2: They have Joe Ryan. They have Dean Kramer. They have
- 38:50Speaker 2: Bailey Ober and Pablo all going into the final years
- 38:52Speaker 2: of their contract. At this point, if you ask me
- 38:55Speaker 2: which of those four, I would give a deal to,
- 38:57Speaker 2: I think Dean Kramers would be the most market friendly.
- 39:02Speaker 2: You can get like a four-year deal that doesn't kill
- 39:05Speaker 2: you on him. And knowing he's probably a four ERA pitcher,
- 39:10Speaker 2: that's not sexy. I don't know what that comes out
- 39:13Speaker 2: to looking like, but he throws 93 to 95.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Sexy enough at number five in the rotation. Correct. He's
- 39:22Speaker 1: going to be pretty expensive in arbitration. Yeah.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Joe Ryan's going to want big bucks.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Um, and Bailey over.
- 39:31Speaker 2: I don't know what to do with Bailey over. Pablo,
- 39:36Speaker 2: for real, if there's a guy I trust to.
- 39:39Speaker 3: If he loves Minnesota like he says, he'll take a deal.
- 39:43Speaker 1: He does. That's the thing. He's so at home.
- 39:47Speaker 2: He's one of those guys that The work ethic, the
- 39:53Speaker 2: commitment to the team, what he brings to the community.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Pablo represents everything you want, and you know that effort.
- 40:03Speaker 2: You've seen him be the guy in big games. He's
- 40:09Speaker 2: a guy I definitely would think about locking up. I
- 40:12Speaker 2: know he doesn't count as a young guy, but.
- 40:16Speaker 4: Young in part.
- 40:17Speaker 1: We have blank canvas on this show, Dan, to explore
- 40:20Speaker 1: the topics as much as we like. Uh, Dan actually
- 40:22Speaker 1: wrote about Luke Keyshaw recently. Uh, I think this was, yeah,
- 40:26Speaker 1: from Tuesday on the athletic about his early struggles and turnarounds, uh,
- 40:31Speaker 1: relevant to the conversation at hand. Moving on. Our last
- 40:35Speaker 1: question of the day is for Mr. Duffy. Um, we
- 40:42Speaker 1: have Dan's burner account, baseball and cats, of course, from
- 40:46Speaker 1: blue sky asking, um, If you were told to hire
- 40:49Speaker 1: the Twins' next pitching coach, Tyler, and you had to
- 40:51Speaker 1: pick one of your former teammates, who would the next
- 40:54Speaker 1: Twins pitching coach be? And a quick note on this,
- 41:00Speaker 1: about an hour ago, Tyler was saying he was struggling
- 41:02Speaker 1: to think of ex-teammates. So I went to chat GBT
- 41:04Speaker 1: and sent him the entire list.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I got a long, I was like, what in
- 41:08Speaker 4: the world?
- 41:09Speaker 1: It was so long. And like, when I see that,
- 41:12Speaker 1: that's the kind of thing that makes me think of
- 41:13Speaker 1: that wild stat that if you put everybody who's ever
- 41:16Speaker 1: played major league baseball in a stadium, it would only
- 41:18Speaker 1: fill a stadium. Yeah. Like you alone have played with
- 41:21Speaker 1: that many pitchers. It doesn't even get to the hitters. Yes. Pitchers.
- 41:24Speaker 4: And even if it was for one day.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:27Speaker 2: No.
- 41:27Speaker 3: And I, I, I tried to stew on this one
- 41:29Speaker 3: since yesterday and it was one, it's like you personalities,
- 41:33Speaker 3: I think goes so much into this stuff. Like I
- 41:35Speaker 3: think the guys, like I had, had Neil Allen and
- 41:38Speaker 3: I had Wes Johnson had Garvin Olson. Like I had some,
- 41:40Speaker 3: some characters, um, around pitching staffs. And at that point,
- 41:45Speaker 3: like when I first came up, you know, like a
- 41:48Speaker 3: guy like Kyle Gibson, I think was, you know, he,
- 41:51Speaker 3: he went through a lot.
- 41:52Speaker 4: He had the injuries, he worked through.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Things, you know, played college, like did all the, the
- 41:57Speaker 3: extracurriculars of the pitching world and then dove deep into
- 42:02Speaker 3: the analytics and like revitalize his career post twins, like
- 42:06Speaker 3: kind of on his way out, like had a great run.
- 42:08Speaker 3: I think he ended up with 12, 13 years in
- 42:10Speaker 3: the big leagues and, He was a guy who I
- 42:12Speaker 3: think really was a good fit. I loved talking shop
- 42:17Speaker 3: with Sonny Gray. Dan interviewed him, I'm sure, plenty of
- 42:20Speaker 3: times when he was in Minnesota. He's just got an
- 42:24Speaker 3: outlook on a lot of things that stirs up some
- 42:26Speaker 3: thought at times. It's just a fun conversation. I have
- 42:30Speaker 3: a good personality to have around. Chris Archer was another one.
- 42:34Speaker 3: I was briefly around him. I really enjoyed some of
- 42:40Speaker 3: the things he coming from the Rays and their pitching
- 42:42Speaker 3: philosophies and learning all those things he had actually he
- 42:46Speaker 3: had Neil Allen at some times as well um was
- 42:49Speaker 3: a guy but the last one I landed on and
- 42:50Speaker 3: actually was kind of laughing that I didn't think of
- 42:53Speaker 3: at first was a guy like Perk um yeah obviously
- 42:55Speaker 3: he's doing broadcasting stuff now but because you listen to
- 42:59Speaker 3: him you know when he was when he was closing
- 43:01Speaker 3: like and I was starting at the time as a
- 43:04Speaker 3: rookie like We didn't interact a ton. He was doing
- 43:07Speaker 3: his thing. I was the rookie that was just like,
- 43:09Speaker 3: stay the hell out of the way. Try not to
- 43:12Speaker 3: make anybody upset. And so I didn't get a ton
- 43:16Speaker 3: of that time with him. But listening to the games
- 43:19Speaker 3: all year and hearing him break things down and talk
- 43:21Speaker 3: philosophies and things like that, he's the one I think
- 43:24Speaker 3: was ahead of the game a little bit on the
- 43:25Speaker 3: analytics side and would be able to implement it and
- 43:30Speaker 3: get it across the players.
- 43:31Speaker 4: I think that's the big.
- 43:33Speaker 3: jump now and you've, you hear this come up a
- 43:35Speaker 3: lot and teams were on TV or interviews are talking
- 43:38Speaker 3: about it. It's, it's great to have all the theories
- 43:41Speaker 3: and the numbers and everything that goes with that, but
- 43:45Speaker 3: it's putting it into application with individual players and getting it,
- 43:49Speaker 3: you know, to each individual guide, they need to hear
- 43:52Speaker 3: it differently sometimes. And that's the hardest part. Um, which again,
- 43:56Speaker 3: it's the reason we're having this conversation. I am very
- 43:59Speaker 3: interested to see who they end up grabbing to be
- 44:01Speaker 3: their guy because I I've had some great guys.
- 44:04Speaker 1: I mean, I had Hef.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Hef wasn't even, I guess he was a bullpen coach
- 44:07Speaker 3: for a year before he left.
- 44:10Speaker 1: He was the advanced scout? Yeah, you're right. He was
- 44:13Speaker 1: the toe pitching coach.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so he was never like the guy. So he
- 44:18Speaker 3: always had like a buffer on him. But like we
- 44:20Speaker 3: called him the weapon because he was our secret weapon.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Like he just had the intel and he knew how
- 44:26Speaker 3: to deliver it to us. And I think at the
- 44:28Speaker 3: end of the day, that's the hardest part is the
- 44:30Speaker 3: delivery and getting the messages across. But all that to
- 44:34Speaker 3: be said, who would my ex-teammate be? So if I
- 44:36Speaker 3: had to pick one, I probably would go with Perk.
- 44:40Speaker 3: And probably Gibby would be a close second for me.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Hey, real quick.
- 44:45Speaker 4: If they would want to do that.
- 44:48Speaker 2: I just want to know. I just looked at that
- 44:50Speaker 2: list right now. of players cause I was doing some
- 44:53Speaker 2: other stuff research wise. Uh, do you remember, there were
- 44:57Speaker 2: 36 pitchers in 2017, uh, for that team. Do you
- 45:00Speaker 2: remember that Adam Wilk and Dylan G each made one
- 45:04Speaker 2: appearance for the twins?
- 45:05Speaker 1: Yes.
- 45:06Speaker 4: I remember Adam Wilk.
- 45:07Speaker 3: He had the, like the beard and we were like,
- 45:09Speaker 3: we literally didn't know it because he was like a
- 45:11Speaker 3: late addition, I think at spring.
- 45:13Speaker 4: So like none of us had met him.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 45:15Speaker 4: And he showed up, pitched and left and was like, All.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Right, see you, man.
- 45:19Speaker 4: Good to see you, man. Dylan G, I love Dylan G.
- 45:23Speaker 1: He's a good dude. I really liked him.
- 45:26Speaker 2: I would love to know if you looked at that
- 45:28Speaker 2: list and were like, wait a minute, who the hell
- 45:29Speaker 2: is this guy? Well, like, Chi-Chi Gonzales came out.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Josh EPT warned me it may not be completely accurate.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Yeah, so I played with Chi-Chi with the Yankees in Scranton.
- 45:44Speaker 4: So I technically was a teammate with him, but he,
- 45:46Speaker 4: I think, came– I don't even remember.
- 45:48Speaker 3: I guess, no, we were in Miami together. Yeah, that
- 45:50Speaker 3: was Sergio Romo year. Yeah, so it was just like,
- 45:53Speaker 3: that's the problem. Those years where it's like the turnover,
- 45:56Speaker 3: you don't remember people.
- 46:00Speaker 1: It is what it is.
- 46:01Speaker 3: It's horrible, but you've got to be refreshed. You're like,
- 46:03Speaker 3: holy crap, that guy was on our team? It's just wild.
- 46:08Speaker 3: Neil Kotz, Zach Duke, these guys that were there for
- 46:12Speaker 3: like three months, and it was like, you had a
- 46:14Speaker 3: great time, but you play a hundred games after they leave.
- 46:17Speaker 4: And you're like, I don't even remember who was on
- 46:19Speaker 4: our team this year.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:22Speaker 1: That's crazy. Uh, it is the 35th anniversary of the twins,
- 46:30Speaker 1: 1991 world series title this month, which is a round
- 46:32Speaker 1: enough number for me to make a bit out of it. Uh,
- 46:35Speaker 1: recurring on this show. Um, I did put a poll
- 46:39Speaker 1: on our YouTube page asking if people would be interested
- 46:41Speaker 1: in joining me for a bonus show in which I
- 46:46Speaker 1: rewatched some of the key moments from that World Series.
- 46:50Speaker 1: And the options on the poll were either yes, I'd
- 46:53Speaker 1: watch the heck out of that, or no, it's been
- 46:55Speaker 1: 35 years, dude, time to let go. 74% so far
- 47:01Speaker 1: saying yes, so I better get that ready for later
- 47:04Speaker 1: this month. But on this day.
- 47:07Speaker 3: That's right.
- 47:08Speaker 1: On this day in 1991, October 8th, it was game
- 47:12Speaker 1: one of the ALCS. The Twins got off to a
- 47:15Speaker 1: good start. A little 5-4 win. They just destroyed Tom
- 47:19Speaker 1: Candiotti of the Blue Jays. He lasted two and two-thirds innings,
- 47:23Speaker 1: eight hits, five earned runs. Cotton Candiotti. Yeah, and the
- 47:27Speaker 1: winning pitcher that day, Jack Morris, got things started off. Obviously,
- 47:32Speaker 1: would have a much more famous start a few weeks later.
- 47:35Speaker 1: David Wells. He came in in relief of Candiotti in
- 47:40Speaker 1: that game through three innings. A young David Wells. Rough
- 47:44Speaker 1: day for Kirby.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Let's say he was like a rookie.
- 47:47Speaker 1: He was not a rookie. He'd been around since the
- 47:49Speaker 1: late 80s, but it was like before his All-Star seasons
- 47:52Speaker 1: and obviously his Yankees tenure and the perfect game and
- 47:55Speaker 1: all that.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Or he got his grown man strength as Dan was
- 47:59Speaker 4: talking about.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Exactly. Dusty. Come on. Man muscles. Man muscles. That is correct.
- 48:05Speaker 1: And then finally, we have a new segment on this
- 48:08Speaker 1: show today called Corrections. On Monday's show, if you watched,
- 48:14Speaker 1: we were talking about what the Twins might be able
- 48:17Speaker 1: to learn from the Milwaukee Brewers, and I made a mistake,
- 48:21Speaker 1: and well, here it is. What we haven't said, because
- 48:25Speaker 1: it doesn't exist on their team, there's no big, juicy
- 48:28Speaker 1: free agent signing. They gave Christian Yelich his money, but
- 48:32Speaker 1: obviously he was homegrown, too. Yeah, that's not right. That's
- 48:36Speaker 1: not right at all. Christian Jelic was, of course, drafted
- 48:39Speaker 1: by the Marlins, traded to Milwaukee, was quite good with
- 48:41Speaker 1: the Marlins, ended up being an MVP in Milwaukee. He's
- 48:44Speaker 1: been there a long time, but to call him homegrown
- 48:47Speaker 1: is inaccurate. My apologies. I regret the error. A few
- 48:50Speaker 1: of the commenters noticed that, so I just wanted to
- 48:52Speaker 1: point that out. Ham and Egger stuff right there, Zach.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Ham and Egger.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Hey, you make a mistake, you've got to own up
- 48:57Speaker 1: to it, and you've got to use the noir film style.
- 49:03Speaker 1: to make it real dramatic.
- 49:05Speaker 4: Internet's forever.
- 49:06Speaker 1: I wish.
- 49:07Speaker 4: Internet's forever.
- 49:08Speaker 2: I think I'm going to get that noise on my
- 49:11Speaker 2: phone to use for arguments at home.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Just the, little buzzer sound.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Just have a hot key on my phone.
- 49:22Speaker 1: I'm used to being able to read something and edit it.
- 49:25Speaker 1: This live speaking thing. There's going to be some mistakes
- 49:28Speaker 1: time to time. I meant to say earlier, Tyler, so
- 49:32Speaker 1: we don't have to do another correction, 121 losses two
- 49:35Speaker 1: years ago for the White Sox. That was their... That's okay.
- 49:37Speaker 1: I knew it was up there.
- 49:38Speaker 2: MLB record. MLB record.
- 49:41Speaker 1: I knew it was a record.
- 49:41Speaker 4: I just didn't know the number. That is tough.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Yeah. That is tough. They're doing fine now, though. And
- 49:47Speaker 1: Dan will be there tonight.
- 49:47Speaker 4: Did you get a first round pick?
- 49:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Game four. It's the last division series going. Guardians, White Sox.
- 49:55Speaker 1: So we'll be back with you on Monday. Probably talk
- 49:57Speaker 1: some playoffs. There was a question that we got today
- 50:01Speaker 1: about free agents we would target. I didn't put that
- 50:04Speaker 1: in because that is what next week is all about.
- 50:07Speaker 1: So we will be doing that next week, looking into
- 50:09Speaker 1: some free agents that we think might be a good
- 50:11Speaker 1: fit for the Twins. Until then, have yourself a great weekend.
- 50:14Speaker 1: If you like what you hear, please toss us a
- 50:16Speaker 1: like and subscribe any way you watch or listen. If
- 50:18Speaker 1: you're on YouTube, there's a QR code on the screen
- 50:22Speaker 1: now to make it real easy. Thanks for listening. We'll
- 50:24Speaker 1: catch you on Monday. Bye-bye.
