- 0:07Howdy Star Gazers and welcome to Star Trails.
- 0:11I'm Drew and I'll be your guide to the night
- 0:13sky for the week of August 17th to the 23rd.
- 0:18This is a week designed for patient eyes and
- 0:21early alarms. We have slim crescents at dawn,
- 0:25a lovely planetary trio before sunrise, and the
- 0:29darkest weekend of the month for deep sky hunting.
- 0:33Then in the second half of the show, we'll widen
- 0:36the frame and talk about the Milky Way's hidden
- 0:39companions. Dozens of ghostly little galaxies
- 0:43that have been circling us all along, almost
- 0:46invisibly. and how they're reshaping our sense
- 0:49of home in the universe. Let's begin with the
- 0:53moon. Right now it's a delicate waning crescent
- 0:57hugging the pre -dawn eastern horizon. Each morning
- 1:00it slims further and slides closer to the sun's
- 1:04glare. By Friday it's a little more than a silver
- 1:07thread in brightening twilight. The new moon
- 1:11arrives early Saturday morning. This isn't just
- 1:14any new moon. It's what astronomers and calendar
- 1:17keepers call a seasonal black moon, the rare
- 1:21case when one astronomical season contains four
- 1:25new moons instead of the usual three, and this
- 1:28is the third of the four. It's mostly a calendar
- 1:33quirk, but practically speaking, it means Friday
- 1:36and Saturday nights bring the darkest skies of
- 1:39the month. If you've been waiting for the Milky
- 1:41Way to leap out of the sky, or you want to take
- 1:44a crack at the Andromeda galaxy with the naked
- 1:47eye from a truly dark sight, this is your moment.
- 1:51The pre -dawn sky is where the week's best show
- 1:53plays out. On Tuesday, August 19th, Mercury reaches
- 1:58its greatest western elongation for this apparition.
- 2:02About 30 to 40 minutes before sunrise, scan very
- 2:06low in the east northeast. Mercury will be bright
- 2:10for a small planet, but still close to the horizon.
- 2:13A pair of binoculars will punch through the haze
- 2:16and help you spot it. Now look higher up that
- 2:19same stretch of sky and you'll find Venus and
- 2:23Jupiter still sharing the stage after last week's
- 2:26conjunction. Venus blazes lower, Jupiter shines
- 2:30above it. On Tuesday and Wednesday a paper -thin
- 2:33crescent moon joins them in the morning twilight
- 2:36turning the scene into a gorgeous quartet. Mercury
- 2:40near the horizon, Venus brighter above it, Jupiter
- 2:44higher still, and the moon as a thin accent.
- 2:49Evening planets are quieter but worth a look.
- 2:52Mars clings to the low western horizon right
- 2:55after sunset. It's faint, small, and sets quickly,
- 2:59so you'll need an unobstructed view and a bit
- 3:01of luck with atmospheric clarity. By late evening,
- 3:05Saturn is the reward, rising in the east -southeast
- 3:08and climbing higher night by night as it heads
- 3:11towards opposition on September 21st. Even a
- 3:15small telescope will show its rings and, with
- 3:18patient viewing, the tiny star -like point of
- 3:21Titan nearby. If you haven't seen Saturn this
- 3:25year, mark it down, late August through September
- 3:28is prime time. The Perseid meteor shower peaked
- 3:32last week, but it doesn't switch off like a faucet.
- 3:36Perseids linger through late August, and a few
- 3:39bright stragglers are very possible in the predawn
- 3:42hours, especially now that moonlight will not
- 3:45be washing out the sky. If you're up early for
- 3:48the planetary lineup anyway, give yourself 15
- 3:51or 20 minutes just to scan the sky. Face generally
- 3:56northeast, but don't fixate on the radiant. Meteors
- 3:59can streak across any part of the sky, and you'll
- 4:03spot more by letting your peripheral vision do
- 4:05the work. If you want targets for the dark evenings
- 4:09later this week, let me recommend three summer
- 4:12gems that don't get a lot of hype. The first
- 4:15is Delphinus, the dolphin, a little diamond and
- 4:18tail asterism just east of Altair that resembles
- 4:22a leaping dolphin. The second is Scutum, the
- 4:26shield. Small and unassuming, but home to M11,
- 4:30the wild duck cluster. Through binoculars or
- 4:34a small scope, it looks like a burst of stardust
- 4:37against the Milky Way, dense, rich, and full
- 4:40of texture. The third is Volpecula, the fox,
- 4:44which hides the famous coat hanger asterism.
- 4:47Six stars and a bar, with four forming the hook.
- 4:51Sweep slowly between Altair and Vega, and once
- 4:55you see the code hanger, you will never unsee
- 4:57it. Under this weekend's moonless sky, all three
- 5:01reward a patient scan. In recent episodes, we've
- 5:06journeyed out to the darkness at the edge of
- 5:08our solar system to explore objects in the Kuiper
- 5:11Belt and beyond. But what will we find when we
- 5:15venture out to the edge of our galaxy? That's

- 5:34back. Today we're talking about the Milky Way's
- 5:38hidden companions. When you stand under a truly
- 5:42dark sky this weekend and the Milky Way glows
- 5:45like a river of light, it is tempting to think
- 5:48we know this city of stars well. We've mapped
- 5:52its spiral arms, traced its dusty lanes, and
- 5:55even weighed the black hole at its center. But
- 5:59there's a surprise waiting just beyond the obvious.
- 6:03Our galaxy is surrounded by dozens, maybe hundreds,
- 6:07of ghostly little galaxies. quietly orbiting
- 6:11the Milky Way like dim satellites. Some are so
- 6:15faint that until recent years we didn't know
- 6:17they even existed. Astronomers call them dwarf
- 6:21galaxies and the faintest among them are known
- 6:24as ultra -faint dwarfs. They are small collections
- 6:28of stars and dark matter bound together by gravity.
- 6:32A typical ultra -faint dwarf may contain only
- 6:36a few thousand stars spread over hundreds of
- 6:39light years. By comparison, the Milky Way holds
- 6:43hundreds of billions of stars. If we think of
- 6:46the Milky Way as a bright metropolis, these dwarves
- 6:49are outlying towns, sparsely populated, dimly
- 6:54lit, and far from the bustle of the core. Why
- 6:58did we miss them for so long? The answer is partly
- 7:01about surface brightness. It's not just how much
- 7:05light an object emits, but how spread out that
- 7:08light is in the sky. Many of these dwarves are
- 7:11so diffuse that their stars melt into the background.
- 7:15They don't pop the way a bright cluster or a
- 7:18nebula does. The breakthrough came with enormous
- 7:22digital sky surveys and sophisticated search
- 7:25techniques. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey was
- 7:29a pioneer here, and the Dark Energy Survey dramatically
- 7:33expanded the census, revealing a host of ultra
- 7:36-faint candidates by looking for tiny over -densities.
- 7:40These are little knots where there are just a
- 7:43few more stars than you would expect by chance.
- 7:46Follow -up spectroscopy then distinguishes true
- 7:49galaxies from star clusters by measuring how
- 7:52the stars move. Galaxies show the signature of
- 7:55dark matter, clusters do not. And the floodgates
- 7:59are still opening. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory,
- 8:03coming fully online soon, will map the southern
- 8:06sky over and over for a decade, essentially making
- 8:10a time -lapse movie of the universe. It's expected
- 8:14to add dozens, maybe hundreds, more of these
- 8:17ghostly satellites to the map. These little galaxies
- 8:21matter in big ways. First, they are dark matter
- 8:24laboratories. Dwarves are often dominated by
- 8:28dark matter, so by measuring the motions of their
- 8:32stars, astronomers can probe how dark matter
- 8:34clusters on small scales. Second, they are crucial
- 8:39clues to galactic evolution. Massive galaxies
- 8:43like the Milky Way likely grew by merging with
- 8:46smaller ones, and many dwarves are survivors
- 8:49or new arrivals in that ongoing story. Some are
- 8:54actively being torn apart, leaving long streams
- 8:57of stars wrapped around our galaxy like faint
- 9:00ribbons. Third, they speak directly to the missing
- 9:04satellites problem. Computer simulations predict
- 9:08that a Milky Way -sized galaxy should have hundreds
- 9:11of tiny companions. We have found a few dozens
- 9:14so far. Either most of the rest are simply too
- 9:18faint to notice until recently, and we're just
- 9:20now finding them, or our models need fine tuning.
- 9:25Either way, the science gets sharper. A few examples
- 9:29make this concrete. The Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal
- 9:33Galaxy is so close to us that our gravity is
- 9:37shredding it. Its stars have been pulled into
- 9:40great arcs, tidal streams that circle the sky
- 9:43and are visible in deep survey data. The Canis
- 9:47Major dwarf galaxy, discovered in 2003, may be
- 9:52the closest galaxy to our own, hiding behind
- 9:55the thick dust and star fields of the Milky Way's
- 9:58disk, only 25 ,000 light -years from us. And
- 10:03Segway 1, an ultra -faint dwarf discovered in
- 10:07Sloan data, might be the dimmest known galaxy,
- 10:10with only a few hundred visible stars. On an
- 10:14image, it looks like nothing more than a slightly
- 10:17suspicious smudge, yet its star's motions betray
- 10:21a deep well of dark matter. These aren't showpieces
- 10:24at the eyepiece, but they're gold mines for understanding
- 10:28how galaxies, including ours, came to be. If
- 10:32you live or travel in the southern hemisphere,
- 10:35you can see two of the Milky Way's brighter companions
- 10:37with your unaided eyes. The large and small Magellanic
- 10:41Clouds, which look like detached pieces of the
- 10:44Milky Way itself floating off the side of the
- 10:47sky. From northern latitudes, you can make a
- 10:51powerful connection by turning binoculars or
- 10:53a small scope toward the Andromeda Galaxy, M31.
- 10:58It's not a satellite of the Milky Way. We and
- 11:01Andromeda are the two big cities in our local
- 11:04group. But thinking of us as Andromeda's companion
- 11:08gives a helpful sense of scale and relationship.
- 11:11There is also a delightful binocular tie -in
- 11:14you can do from anywhere in the northern hemisphere.
- 11:17Look toward the rich star fields of Sagittarius
- 11:21and find the globular cluster M54. This cluster
- 11:25is actually embedded in the Sagittarius dwarf
- 11:28galaxy. When you gaze at M54, you're peering
- 11:32into another galaxy's star system. You can also
- 11:36explore these faint satellites from the couch.
- 11:39The Sloan Digital Sky Survey's online navigate
- 11:43tools let you type in targets like Segway 1 or
- 11:47Canis Major Dwarf, and zoom into the exact patches
- 11:51of sky where they hide. The Dark Energy Survey
- 11:54has public image galleries that show these ultra
- 11:57-faint dwarves against deep star fields, and
- 12:00they're striking once you know what you're looking
- 12:02at. If you want a three -dimensional feel for
- 12:05the neighborhood, free software like GaiaSky
- 12:09can let you fly around the model of the Milky
- 12:11Way and see where the known satellites live in
- 12:14our halo. I'll drop links to all of these in
- 12:17the show notes. There is a poetic link between
- 12:21this week's seasonal black moon and these hidden
- 12:24galaxies. The black moon hides in the sun's glare,
- 12:28invisible not because it's absent, but because
- 12:31of where and when we're looking. The dwarf galaxies
- 12:35hide in the Milky Way's glare, invisible to our
- 12:38eyes until we gather enough light and apply enough
- 12:42patience. In both cases, the sky is reminding
- 12:45us that the obvious story is rarely the whole
- 12:48story. A darker sky reveals more. A deeper look
- 12:52reveals the rest. Our galaxy is not an island
- 12:56alone in the dark. It's part of a quiet archipelago
- 13:00of companions, faint and fragile, sharing our
- 13:04long orbit through the universe. If the stars
