- 0:38Speaker 6: has given Seattle a 1-0 lead with three seconds left
- 0:42Speaker 6: in the first period.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Oh, what a night that was. Can you believe it?
- 0:46Speaker 7: Five years ago, hockey became a reality as far as
- 0:49Speaker 7: home games and the Seattle Kraken in these parts.
- 0:52Speaker 2: And here we are.
- 0:54Speaker 7: To present day in year number six with a Kraken
- 0:57Speaker 7: off to a great start.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We have a lot to reflect on. We'll have a
- 1:00Speaker 2: lot to get.
- 1:00Speaker 7: To here for the future, but glad you're hanging out
- 1:02Speaker 7: with us once again on Kraken Weekly.

- 1:32Speaker 7: on Bob's career.
- 1:33Speaker 2: He will be joining us for this show in a
- 1:36Speaker 2: little bit.
- 1:37Speaker 7: Plus reaction from Matty Beneers. He had a power play
- 1:40Speaker 7: goal from last night. Your questions and our three stars
- 1:43Speaker 7: as well. Before we get to all of this, let's
- 1:47Speaker 7: go ahead and reset last couple games because it got
- 1:50Speaker 7: pretty wiry, hairy, and crazy from period one, two, to three,
- 1:54Speaker 7: and pushing overtime as well with the Kraken face Detroit
- 1:57Speaker 7: and Utah right out of the gate.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Following that, the reaction from Matty Beneers.
- 2:03Speaker 8: Kraken are back in.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Here comes Stevenson.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Hands it off.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Samuelskevich fires.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Scores!
- 2:15Speaker 8: It's the return of the Mack! Mackie Samuels-Skevich back home
- 2:20Speaker 8: in Seattle on the Kraken. Have a 1-0 lead, 13-15.
- 2:24Speaker 8: In the slot, hands it off, Riker.
- 2:28Speaker 9: Evans, scores!
- 2:34Speaker 10: Gatton wins the face-off, Bontor scores!
- 2:43Speaker 4: A clean face-off win, left circle.
- 2:46Speaker 8: And Brandon Montour steps into a bomb from the high slot, and.
- 2:50Speaker 4: The Kraken kick the field goal. They're up 3-0.
- 2:53Speaker 2: With 3.59 to play the second.
- 2:55Speaker 11: Starts with a face-off win, Berkley Catten out to Brandon Montour.
- 3:00Speaker 11: A quick shot on net, Brandon Montour's got his first
- 3:03Speaker 11: of the year. Snapping it past Kik Tarasov.
- 3:06Speaker 12: Three-nothing Seattle.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Near side red line.
- 3:09Speaker 9: Dumps it in.
- 3:10Speaker 8: Seattle turns it over.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Larkin. Back door.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Don't break it.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Scores.
- 3:16Speaker 4: And the Red Wings win.
- 3:18Speaker 8: A six on four power play backdoor tap-in.
- 3:22Speaker 4: We're tied at three.
- 3:25Speaker 9: 16.3 left in the third.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Game resting on his stick. Grubauer comes out of the street.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Sparkett with speed.
- 3:30Speaker 7: Left circle.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Out of the middle.
- 3:32Speaker 13: Of the slot.
- 3:33Speaker 10: He shoots.
- 3:33Speaker 9: It's time by Philip Grubauer.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And the Seattle Packers take the extra point.
- 3:40Speaker 5: One, two, three.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Onside.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Jordan Eberle, a shot near wing.
- 3:44Speaker 8: It bounces off the end boards, off the back of Mamelka.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And they score.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Nice move on Kraus.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Katt throws it down low. Backdoor tap-in.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Scores!
- 3:59Speaker 8: Matty Beneers draws the penalty. And finds the back of
- 4:05Speaker 8: the net. 1.37 to go on the first.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Crack it back on top.
- 4:09Speaker 5: 2-1.
- 4:09Speaker 11: Well, the top of Utah's box blows a tire on
- 4:13Speaker 11: Berkley Catt. Catt recognizes it and attacks the neck. He
- 4:17Speaker 11: drops the puck down low to Kapokaku, who does a
- 4:21Speaker 11: nice spinning move. Backhand pass over to Matty Beneers in
- 4:24Speaker 11: the back post.
- 4:25Speaker 5: He taps it home. Crack it up.
- 4:27Speaker 14: 2-1.
- 4:28Speaker 4: On tour to the half wall.
- 4:29Speaker 8: The captain.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Back to Montour.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Widespires.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Scores!
- 4:35Speaker 10: Eager.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Now for Cooley. High slot shot.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And they score.
- 4:43Speaker 10: That one on side. And the Mammoth have tied the
- 4:47Speaker 10: game 3-3. 12-17 to go in period number. Now Seattle
- 4:52Speaker 10: brings it up the right side. McMahon shoots. That one
- 4:55Speaker 10: through the pads of Mimalka. Goes off the side of
- 4:57Speaker 10: the goal. McMahon again.
- 4:59Speaker 7: Back door.
- 4:59Speaker 9: Scores!
- 5:01Speaker 8: Mackie Sanoskevich.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Goes toward the goal.
- 5:12Speaker 8: Crashing the net. He'll finish the play. And the Kraken
- 5:16Speaker 8: regain their lead. It's a 4-3 edge with 5.25 left
- 5:22Speaker 8: in regulation.
- 5:23Speaker 11: Well, Bobby McMahon with tons of speed down that left side.
- 5:26Speaker 11: He's got a 2-on-1, but he's got to step. on
- 5:29Speaker 11: the Mammoth defense, but he opts for the shot. Like
- 5:31Speaker 11: he said, Vemelka leaks.
- 5:33Speaker 5: That one out.
- 5:34Speaker 11: He ends up picking the puck up again, finding Samus Gibbons,
- 5:37Speaker 11: trailing down the slot, puts it on his stick, and
- 5:40Speaker 11: on the first shot of this third.
- 5:42Speaker 5: Period, the Kraken score, 4-3.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Mammoth can't hold the line, and Seattle will.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Chase him back to the center circle.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Now Gaudreau picks it off, toward the empty net, scores!
- 5:53Speaker 3: Get that airplane in.
- 5:57Speaker 9: With leads and shutting teams.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Down and not letting them push back and get momentum.
- 6:00Speaker 3: That's kind of what happened tonight in the last game.
- 6:03Speaker 3: You know, you kind of let a team back in
- 6:04Speaker 3: and they get goals, get momentum and they tied up.
- 6:07Speaker 3: So a good response by us, but yeah, we'll get
- 6:10Speaker 3: more comfortable in those situations and, and, you know, shut
- 6:13Speaker 3: teams down.
- 6:14Speaker 14: And what does it say about the resiliency of this
- 6:16Speaker 14: team though, that you haven't let those completely, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 14: I mean, you, you have recovered and won those games
- 6:21Speaker 14: in all three cases.
- 6:23Speaker 9: It's great.
- 6:24Speaker 3: You know, it's tough when you let a team back
- 6:25Speaker 3: in and, they kind of have all the momentum and
- 6:28Speaker 3: to be able to, you know, obviously we don't want
- 6:31Speaker 3: to let them tie it up, but after they tie
- 6:33Speaker 3: it up, kind of putting our foot down saying, you know, turning,
- 6:36Speaker 3: turning the tide a little bit, getting some momentum, getting
- 6:38Speaker 3: some offense, scoring the go ahead goal. Those are, those
- 6:41Speaker 3: are huge moments.
- 6:42Speaker 14: From your perspective, how is it to see Mackey having
- 6:45Speaker 14: the start that he's had here?
- 6:46Speaker 3: Yeah, he's been great. You know, not surprised. He's, he's
- 6:50Speaker 3: so skilled. He's, he's an awesome player. So, you know, we're,
- 6:54Speaker 3: we're happy to have him here and, I hope he's
- 6:56Speaker 3: having fun.
- 6:58Speaker 13: Maddie, overall that's seven wins in 11 games out of
- 7:00Speaker 13: the gate here for you guys. How happy are you
- 7:02Speaker 13: with the way you guys are playing? There's obviously goals
- 7:04Speaker 13: being scored. You guys are contributing across the board. What
- 7:06Speaker 13: do you kind of like about your game and the
- 7:08Speaker 13: start you've had?
- 7:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we're really connected as a team right now.
- 7:13Speaker 3: We're all on the same page. We're playing You know,
- 7:17Speaker 3: it's back and forth games, but I feel like for
- 7:18Speaker 3: the most part, it's been 60 minutes. You know, guys
- 7:21Speaker 3: are competing, winning battles, doing the right things. And, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 3: we're making plays. We're making plays all over the ice.
- 7:27Speaker 3: We're playing with confidence. And that's, you know, what we
- 7:30Speaker 3: got to do for the rest of the season. You know,
- 7:32Speaker 3: it's a good start, but we got a lot more
- 7:34Speaker 3: to go.
- 7:35Speaker 2: All right, that reaction from Matty Beneers.
- 7:37Speaker 7: And guys, we often say, just like maybe in golf,
- 7:41Speaker 7: it's not how, but how many. And the Kraken have
- 7:45Speaker 7: stacked up how many to the record they.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Have right now at 7-3-1.
- 7:49Speaker 7: Where are we at right now with the state of
- 7:52Speaker 7: this team? I mean, this is crazy with how they
- 7:55Speaker 7: built this up. I think in just establishing their game,
- 7:59Speaker 7: period one, period two to period three, but third period
- 8:02Speaker 7: trends say it's all about survival. So where are we
- 8:05Speaker 7: at right I.
- 8:06Speaker 10: Think this team, and Al and I talked about this
- 8:09Speaker 10: quite a bit on the last road trip publicly, I
- 8:11Speaker 10: think on the air and then just amongst ourselves, I
- 8:16Speaker 10: think I am almost to the point of small sample
- 8:21Speaker 10: size being done. And I think that this is a
- 8:26Speaker 10: pretty good representation of who this team is, a team
- 8:30Speaker 10: that is fast, a team that has found a way
- 8:34Speaker 10: to score more goals. I think the recent trend of
- 8:40Speaker 10: blowing third period leads may be creeping into the concerning category.
- 8:46Speaker 10: I mean, but it's hard to say something's concerning if
- 8:49Speaker 10: you're getting wins. The Kraken have allowed power play goal
- 8:53Speaker 10: or they've allowed third period goals rather each game this season. So,
- 8:58Speaker 10: you know, you'd like to see that cleaned up. I
- 9:01Speaker 10: know that we're only in a game 11, but you're
- 9:04Speaker 10: I think you're starting to get a really good idea
- 9:07Speaker 10: of who we're going to see on a nightly basis with.
- 9:12Speaker 4: The Seattle Kraken.
- 9:12Speaker 10: They're going to work hard. They're going to skate. The
- 9:15Speaker 10: offense is going to come from up and down the lineup.
- 9:18Speaker 10: You're going to get strong goaltending. However, again, it's game 11.
- 9:23Speaker 10: Everybody's still fresh for the most part. Everyone's feeling froggy
- 9:28Speaker 10: and still limber and ready to go. Hopefully in January,
- 9:32Speaker 10: that's still the case. Hopefully in February, that's still the case. But,
- 9:37Speaker 10: you know, I was listening to Mick Kern on NHL
- 9:39Speaker 10: Network Radio the other day. We're going to turn the
- 9:42Speaker 10: calendar here to November, and of course, We look at
- 9:45Speaker 10: American Thanksgiving. Last year, the stat held true. If you're
- 9:50Speaker 10: going based on points, not just win percentage, because I
- 9:55Speaker 10: think there was maybe a little bit of a discrepancy there,
- 9:57Speaker 10: but just based on points, 75%. of the teams that
- 10:01Speaker 10: were in a playoff spot last Thanksgiving went on to
- 10:04Speaker 10: the playoffs. Now we have a month and a half
- 10:06Speaker 10: left to get there, or about a month rather to
- 10:08Speaker 10: get there. So again, we'll put the brakes on a
- 10:10Speaker 10: little bit, but I think we're seeing the team that
- 10:15Speaker 10: we are going to see, barring catastrophic injury or anything else,
- 10:19Speaker 10: that is going to play the remaining 73 games of
- 10:22Speaker 10: the season.
- 10:25Speaker 12: Yeah, I think the things that we're seeing this year,
- 10:28Speaker 12: and it's a question we all get asked constantly on
- 10:32Speaker 12: radio shows, podcasts, etc. What's different about the Kraken this year?
- 10:37Speaker 12: What's different? Because the results are obviously a little bit
- 10:42Speaker 12: different over the first 11 games. Not drastically, but off.
- 10:46Speaker 5: To a good start. What's different?
- 10:48Speaker 12: Well, we had one off-season acquisition in Maki Samuskevic, and
- 10:53Speaker 12: I think that I'm not the only one thinking this,
- 10:55Speaker 12: but I'm looking to see more from him. He had
- 10:59Speaker 12: a game winning goal in the Utah game. That's great.
- 11:02Speaker 12: I want to see more of that. But other than that,
- 11:05Speaker 12: not a lot. Now we do get a full season
- 11:08Speaker 12: of Bobby McMahon. We had a small sample size of
- 11:10Speaker 12: him last year and out of the gate, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 12: he's looking good as well. I think that, you know,
- 11:16Speaker 12: we talked about Matty Beneers and his game continuing to evolve.
- 11:20Speaker 12: It stretched to a 200-foot game last year. And we said,
- 11:23Speaker 12: you know, can it stay a 200-foot game, but can
- 11:26Speaker 12: he increase his offense?
- 11:28Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 11:28Speaker 12: He's starting to do that a little bit more. But
- 11:31Speaker 12: I think the biggest one for me is Berkley Catton.
- 11:34Speaker 12: I think that his game is so exciting to watch
- 11:38Speaker 12: right now. The way that he undressed Lawson Kraus on
- 11:42Speaker 12: that Matty Beneers goal, dropping the puck on a no-look
- 11:46Speaker 12: pass down to Kapo Kakko, and it was an elite
- 11:48Speaker 12: pass by Kakko over to Beneers as well, but it
- 11:51Speaker 12: all started with Katton going up the wall slowly and
- 11:54Speaker 12: then putting the brakes on. Lawson Kraus' feet came right
- 11:58Speaker 12: up from underneath him. And that's where the play got started.
- 12:01Speaker 12: And you see more and more of that from Berkeley
- 12:03Speaker 12: cat and you see speed bursts, you see confidence.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Um, I think he could be probably.
- 12:09Speaker 12: In contention for the, uh, sorry, Fitz, what's the award
- 12:16Speaker 12: most developed player this year.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Most, uh, yeah, most improved, most improved, most improved.
- 12:21Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 12: Early contender for most improved player for this year, based
- 12:26Speaker 12: on what we've seen over the first 11 games.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Okay.
- 12:28Speaker 7: I want to have that kind of set us up
- 12:30Speaker 7: here as like an appetizer platter here for the main
- 12:32Speaker 7: opening statement of this, because we're going to go in
- 12:34Speaker 7: different directions. I think with this, here's what I want
- 12:36Speaker 7: to get to right now at seven, three and one
- 12:40Speaker 7: in October, sloppy hockey reigns supreme injuries reign supreme and
- 12:45Speaker 7: narratives also reign supreme. I think for me, what we're
- 12:48Speaker 7: looking at more and more and more is, is how
- 12:51Speaker 7: much can this team defy models, defy analytics, defy narratives
- 12:56Speaker 7: from roughly two months ago? And ultimately, what are you
- 13:00Speaker 7: asking for out of this hockey club to be in
- 13:03Speaker 7: the mix here for the postseason? We touched on this
- 13:05Speaker 7: roughly about a few weeks ago. And I said, number one, depth, check.
- 13:09Speaker 7: Number two, are you getting the most out of your
- 13:11Speaker 7: young guys? Well, Al, you brought this up. Case in point,
- 13:14Speaker 7: Berkley Catton, check. Number three, I've said this all along.
- 13:18Speaker 7: This is going to go nowhere unless you have great goaltending.
- 13:22Speaker 7: Are they getting great goaltending by Philip Grubauer standards? Yes.
- 13:26Speaker 7: Has Joey Decord had a few bumps in the road
- 13:28Speaker 7: so far? Yes, but we've seen some pretty good games
- 13:30Speaker 7: out of him too. The promising signs are certainly there.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Special teams. Power play made a big impact against Utah
- 13:39Speaker 7: last night. They've made a big impact as well over
- 13:42Speaker 7: the last several games. Special teams up and down, but
- 13:45Speaker 7: you're seeing, I think, the foundation of success already become
- 13:50Speaker 7: an impact here for this team.
- 13:52Speaker 2: So you can go and.
- 13:53Speaker 7: Look at maybe the analytics as far as maybe how
- 13:55Speaker 7: they're getting caved, PDO, shot percentage, puck luck, shooting luck, whatever, fine.
- 14:01Speaker 2: But here is the deal.
- 14:03Speaker 7: Until they get a 1C in, how are you going
- 14:07Speaker 7: to create offense up and down your lineup?
- 14:10Speaker 2: There are only three players on this roster who don't
- 14:12Speaker 2: have a point.
- 14:14Speaker 7: They are players who are not playing because of injuries
- 14:17Speaker 7: or because they're a 13 forward. That's Curtis Douglas, Ryan Lindgren,
- 14:21Speaker 7: and Jacob Melanson. So you're getting depth scoring up and
- 14:24Speaker 7: down your lineup.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And the more and.
- 14:26Speaker 7: More that we're talking about Berkeley Caton, As an impact player,
- 14:30Speaker 7: as a go-to player, maybe as a guy who's going
- 14:33Speaker 7: to graduate with his line for more ice time and
- 14:35Speaker 7: more responsibility, that's going to raise the floor of this team.
- 14:40Speaker 7: So you're already seeing this from the get-go, and we're
- 14:43Speaker 7: only at October 23rd. So are the Kraken for real
- 14:46Speaker 7: at 7-3-1? You can draw your own conclusions, but I'll
- 14:50Speaker 7: tell you this. I'm a lot more convinced and a
- 14:52Speaker 7: lot more convicted about where this team is than, say,
- 14:55Speaker 7: roughly two weeks ago. The promising signs are there. They're
- 14:59Speaker 7: right now 1-0 in a very important 10-game stretch. They're
- 15:03Speaker 7: 2-0 right now on a four-game homestand. You are finding
- 15:06Speaker 7: ways to take care of business because, yes, you have
- 15:09Speaker 7: blown leads, but you've seen the numbers.
- 15:12Speaker 2: You have seen the metrics.
- 15:14Speaker 7: As far as how harder it is to win in
- 15:17Speaker 7: the National Hockey League when you are chasing.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Instead of leading.
- 15:21Speaker 7: And the Kraken right now are playing those odds very well.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Guys, take it away.
- 15:28Speaker 12: Yeah, listen, I think that a lot of boxes have
- 15:30Speaker 12: been ticked so far. But, you know, we're we're 11
- 15:35Speaker 12: games into the season. And, you know, everything you look
- 15:38Speaker 12: and read, the Kraken have had a friendly schedule. They've
- 15:42Speaker 12: come up lucky. They they haven't had the health bug
- 15:44Speaker 12: hit them.
- 15:47Speaker 5: I don't care.
- 15:48Speaker 12: I'm not a betting guy, but if you could put
- 15:50Speaker 12: $ 20 on every Kraken game so far this season, I
- 15:53Speaker 12: think you'd have a lot of extra money in your
- 15:55Speaker 12: pocket right now because I like to look at the
- 15:57Speaker 12: odds before every game. And a lot of the games
- 15:59Speaker 12: talk about, well, the other team's favored because of whatever reason.
- 16:04Speaker 12: The Kraken are on the road. They're playing a top team.
- 16:06Speaker 12: They're playing the best power play unit, whatever. And this
- 16:09Speaker 12: team continues to find ways to win offensively. Are there
- 16:13Speaker 12: some cracks that need to be patched up?
- 16:14Speaker 11: Absolutely.
- 16:15Speaker 12: And I think that Lane Lambert knows that and he'll
- 16:17Speaker 12: continue to work on those things. But meanwhile, this team
- 16:21Speaker 12: continues to find ways to win. I think the evolution
- 16:24Speaker 12: is going from finding ways to win to owning a
- 16:28Speaker 12: game from opening faceoff until final buzzer where there was
- 16:33Speaker 12: never a doubt that this Kraken team was going to
- 16:35Speaker 12: win the game. I think that's the next evolution of
- 16:38Speaker 12: the Seattle Kraken.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think you're bang on.
- 16:42Speaker 10: I'm going to go in a little different direction with
- 16:45Speaker 10: my opening statement, my opening thoughts. Mike, you brought up
- 16:50Speaker 10: narratives earlier in your opening thoughts, and I hope I
- 16:57Speaker 10: don't get in trouble for this, but the narrative, the
- 17:02Speaker 10: national narrative of the Seattle Kraken being this forgotten nation
- 17:08Speaker 10: stepchild of a team is getting very old. And if
- 17:14Speaker 10: I can be frank, it's really starting to piss me
- 17:17Speaker 10: off because I understand this team doesn't have a McDavid.
- 17:23Speaker 10: This team doesn't have a McKinnon or a Hughes or
- 17:26Speaker 10: a Kachuk or whatever.
- 17:28Speaker 4: I get it.
- 17:30Speaker 10: This team is still worthy of, of professional high level coverage.
- 17:39Speaker 10: This team is still worthy of a national broadcaster knowing
- 17:46Speaker 10: that your goaltender is, in fact, German and not Russian.
- 17:51Speaker 10: This team is still worthy of a national rights holder,
- 17:55Speaker 10: a national broadcaster, knowing that the eighth overall, seventh overall
- 18:02Speaker 10: pick from two years ago is Berkley Caton and not
- 18:06Speaker 10: Berkley Caton. And the folks who are the quote-unquote experts,
- 18:13Speaker 10: the loudest people in the room, are in fact ones
- 18:17Speaker 10: who are rarely ever in this room because they don't
- 18:21Speaker 10: deem the Kraken worthy for whatever reason. They've only made
- 18:25Speaker 10: the playoffs one time. They're not sexy enough. They've had
- 18:29Speaker 10: three coaches, whatever the case may be. It's very maddening
- 18:36Speaker 10: to see a team that is having success, that is
- 18:40Speaker 10: off to their best start of franchise history, being reduced to, well,
- 18:45Speaker 10: they played Calgary twice and they played Detroit. Well, they
- 18:49Speaker 10: caught this team on the second half of a back-to-back
- 18:52Speaker 10: and they didn't have their superstars. Well, look at what
- 18:55Speaker 10: happened when they played a real team in Edmonton and
- 18:58Speaker 10: in Florida. That's the real Seattle Kraken. And listen, I
- 19:02Speaker 10: understand this is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business. I understand that this
- 19:08Speaker 10: is a industry where we're trying to fight for our
- 19:16Speaker 10: place in the American lexicon and consciousness of sports viewership
- 19:26Speaker 10: and consumption. But that doesn't excuse or that doesn't allow
- 19:34Speaker 10: you the right to To just forget or to just,
- 19:41Speaker 10: I guess, downplay one of the teams that certain national
- 19:48Speaker 10: rights holders have paid. billions of dollars to cover and
- 19:53Speaker 10: to act as experts in their coverage of said team.
- 19:57Speaker 10: And it doesn't just start, it doesn't stop there. It
- 19:59Speaker 10: is a lot of writers around the country, a lot
- 20:03Speaker 10: of other pundits who think that their hot takes are
- 20:07Speaker 10: just the best hot takes in the world because they
- 20:11Speaker 10: love dumping on the Seattle Kraken.
- 20:14Speaker 4: This team hasn't had success. We get it. This team
- 20:17Speaker 4: doesn't have a McDavid. We get it.
- 20:19Speaker 10: Right.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Understood.
- 20:22Speaker 10: But there is something I think to be said about
- 20:25Speaker 10: doing your homework, about being professional, about acknowledging a team
- 20:29Speaker 10: that is desperately trying to turn it around a team
- 20:32Speaker 10: that is trying to continue to grow and build a
- 20:35Speaker 10: fan base and to just get the, again, to be frank,
- 20:40Speaker 10: crapped on at every single turn from media around the
- 20:45Speaker 10: country really pisses me off. So I don't know if
- 20:51Speaker 10: anyone's going to see this. I might get fined.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I don't know. I'll pay it. But it's getting to.
- 20:59Speaker 10: A maddening point when every time you turn on a
- 21:04Speaker 10: radio station or a television station, There is either no
- 21:08Speaker 10: coverage of this team. There is very little coverage of
- 21:11Speaker 10: this team. And the coverage that there is of this
- 21:15Speaker 10: team is very, very basic. It is very, very high level.
- 21:20Speaker 10: It is very, very dismissive. Um, and, and I am
- 21:25Speaker 10: just waiting for all of the, you know, what to
- 21:29Speaker 10: roll back downhill when the Kraken are standing on top
- 21:34Speaker 10: of that hill, uh, and hopefully are getting ready for
- 21:41Speaker 10: what would be a lengthy playoff run.
- 21:43Speaker 4: So that is my opening statement. Come at me, please.
- 21:47Speaker 7: So I think effectively we're already getting the Seattle versus
- 21:51Speaker 7: everybody T-shirts printed out and ready to go here very,
- 21:53Speaker 7: very soon.
- 21:55Speaker 12: You know what?
- 21:55Speaker 4: I'm not even going to say Seattle versus everybody. I'm just... Again,
- 21:59Speaker 4: I understand. I said it before. This is a results-based business.
- 22:04Speaker 4: I get it.
- 22:04Speaker 2: But wouldn't it be fun, though, Seattle versus everybody?
- 22:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that'd be great.
- 22:08Speaker 10: I will never forget when we were in the playoffs
- 22:11Speaker 10: two years ago, we were talking with the lovely and
- 22:13Speaker 10: very talented Kate Spence, who was on the Kraken brand team,
- 22:17Speaker 10: one of our very talented designers, and we sent her
- 22:20Speaker 10: a design for a shirt. that said House Money because, again,
- 22:25Speaker 10: people had the Avs in.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Three that year.
- 22:28Speaker 10: They had the Dallas Stars in two. The Kraken won't
- 22:31Speaker 10: even show up.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Do I remember that?
- 22:33Speaker 4: And we were going to.
- 22:34Speaker 10: Get shirts printed that said House Money and the S
- 22:37Speaker 10: in House Money was going to be the Kraken logo.
- 22:40Speaker 7: I remember at the end of game seven and literally
- 22:42Speaker 7: our reaction to others was, you.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Mad, bro?
- 22:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 4: And like I said, I understand. I understand that.
- 22:52Speaker 10: Your job is to sell tickets, or I guess your
- 22:55Speaker 10: job is to sell subscriptions.
- 22:56Speaker 4: Your job is to promote what's hot, what's sexy.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Engagement.
- 23:02Speaker 9: Engagement.
- 23:03Speaker 2: That's a buzzword now in Euro 2026.
- 23:06Speaker 4: I also don't think that gives you the right.
- 23:11Speaker 10: To just completely dismiss one of the teams and not
- 23:16Speaker 10: do the most basic of research when it comes to
- 23:21Speaker 10: A national rights holder, a national broadcaster covering one of
- 23:27Speaker 10: the 32 teams that you have paid an insane amount
- 23:31Speaker 10: of money for the rights to cover.
- 23:34Speaker 7: I want to move on to the most telling part
- 23:36Speaker 7: about the Kraken and their game and how accurately it
- 23:40Speaker 7: portrays them because. Fitz, when you lose at this time
- 23:44Speaker 7: of year, it's generally about you lost the mistake game.
- 23:48Speaker 7: And the Kraken beat Utah last night at the mistake game.
- 23:52Speaker 7: First seven wins for the Kraken beat Calgary 6-1. Beat
- 23:56Speaker 7: Calgary 6-1 again. Beat Detroit 6-3. Beat Washington 5-3. Beat
- 24:01Speaker 7: Philadelphia 3-2 shootout. Beat Detroit 4-3. Beat Utah 5-3. I'm
- 24:08Speaker 7: kind of split between I think where Detroit and Utah
- 24:14Speaker 7: ended here, because I think we see a true form
- 24:17Speaker 7: of where this team is at technically for the first
- 24:21Speaker 7: two periods.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And this team is 6-0 and now scoring the first
- 24:24Speaker 2: goal of the game.
- 24:26Speaker 7: I think we have a realization of how much they
- 24:30Speaker 7: have to do when they are closing out third periods.
- 24:34Speaker 2: It's a mental game more than anything.
- 24:36Speaker 7: Jordan Eberle said as much this and others as well
- 24:39Speaker 7: after the game last night. And eventually it wouldn't surprise
- 24:42Speaker 7: me to see the priorities shift down the road with
- 24:47Speaker 7: how maybe Lane Lambert deploys certain guys in certain situations.
- 24:52Speaker 10: Yeah, you know, I liked Eberle's comment last night when
- 24:56Speaker 10: he said that I don't think it's really a third
- 25:00Speaker 10: period problem. I think it is just a holding the
- 25:03Speaker 10: lead problem. And again, we're not the experts. We're paid
- 25:10Speaker 10: to talk like the experts. But when Lane Lambert the
- 25:14Speaker 10: other day tells us that, hey, I don't think we're
- 25:18Speaker 10: sitting back. I don't think it's an example of something
- 25:22Speaker 10: that we're doing. I mean, he is the coach of
- 25:26Speaker 10: this team. But I do think there is a little
- 25:31Speaker 10: bit of a maybe you're not prepared for the push or,
- 25:36Speaker 10: you know, the push is coming.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Maybe you weren't.
- 25:38Speaker 10: Expecting the push to be as hard. And again, at
- 25:42Speaker 10: the end of the day, and I asked Al this
- 25:44Speaker 10: question the other day, I said, listen, are you, are
- 25:47Speaker 10: you happy that the Kraken are getting wins? And, and Hey,
- 25:52Speaker 10: you know what? It doesn't matter how it was. They don't,
- 25:54Speaker 10: they don't ask how or how many they ask how
- 25:56Speaker 10: or whatever it is.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:57Speaker 4: It doesn't matter how they do it.
- 25:59Speaker 10: As long as they do it, Or are you concerned like, hey,
- 26:02Speaker 10: is this becoming a concerning trend? I do think that
- 26:07Speaker 10: something like that, I'm not too concerned this early. But
- 26:12Speaker 10: I mean, if we're a game 20 and the Kraken
- 26:15Speaker 10: are still blowing two goal leads in the third period,
- 26:17Speaker 10: if we're getting after Christmas and we're still seeing, you know,
- 26:22Speaker 10: once every five games, three, four times every 10 game segment,
- 26:27Speaker 10: the Kraken are having two fights from behind, or they
- 26:31Speaker 10: have the lead, then they're tied, then they come back,
- 26:34Speaker 10: then maybe I would sound the alarm. Right now, I
- 26:38Speaker 10: guess I'm a little cautiously optimistic that this is just
- 26:41Speaker 10: a mini dip in this schedule, but I do think
- 26:47Speaker 10: that Banking points early is going to be huge. We'll
- 26:51Speaker 10: end up playing a factor. I've said it before. The
- 26:53Speaker 10: Kraken are going to be in a playoff race, I think,
- 26:56Speaker 10: for the bulk of this season. And you don't want
- 26:58Speaker 10: to be looking back here April 1st, going into that
- 27:01Speaker 10: last stretch of games, wondering, man, really wish we had
- 27:05Speaker 10: had that game in Calgary. Man, really wish we didn't
- 27:08Speaker 10: mess around with Detroit.
- 27:10Speaker 4: Well, you didn't.
- 27:10Speaker 10: You got the points when you needed them to be.
- 27:12Speaker 10: And then I think that those are going to pay
- 27:14Speaker 10: off for you down the road.
- 27:15Speaker 12: Yeah, we talked a little bit about this last night. And,
- 27:18Speaker 12: you know, we're in the business of chaos cells and
- 27:22Speaker 12: criticism cells. And, you know, if the Kraken were winning
- 27:25Speaker 12: 6-0 and three different players were getting two goals every night,
- 27:28Speaker 12: we'd be talking about, ah, you know, so-and-so just can't
- 27:30Speaker 12: get the hat trick. You know, so-and-so just can't find
- 27:33Speaker 12: a way to get that third goal. You know, like
- 27:35Speaker 12: that's just.
- 27:36Speaker 5: What we do.
- 27:37Speaker 12: And would you rather, as Everett and I talked about
- 27:39Speaker 12: last night, would you rather go up 3-0 in the
- 27:42Speaker 12: first period– allow the other team to find a way
- 27:45Speaker 12: back in and win the game four or three or
- 27:46Speaker 12: would you rather go down three nothing in the first
- 27:49Speaker 12: period and find a way to win four three I
- 27:51Speaker 12: would always take the go up three three goals because
- 27:55Speaker 12: I think that's easier to work with in terms of
- 27:57Speaker 12: sorting that out versus getting scored on three goals in
- 28:00Speaker 12: the first period so Is this something you want to
- 28:03Speaker 12: see over the course of the next 73 games? No,
- 28:06Speaker 12: you don't want to see it. But I think this
- 28:09Speaker 12: is something that Kraken can work with. Go get that
- 28:11Speaker 12: first goal of the game. Go build a lead. Carry
- 28:14Speaker 12: that lead into the third period. And ideally, yes, ideally
- 28:18Speaker 12: close it out. But if some of those games you
- 28:20Speaker 12: get pushes from other teams and they get back into
- 28:22Speaker 12: the games, hey, it's a National Hockey League, man. If
- 28:25Speaker 12: that push is going to happen, you're not going to
- 28:27Speaker 12: be able to hold it off every time. But that's
- 28:29Speaker 12: something I can work with as a coach.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Last night I brought this up here.
- 28:33Speaker 7: The team usually that does not score the first goal
- 28:37Speaker 7: of the game wins only about 33% of their games.
- 28:43Speaker 7: So you'd much rather be in the position of being
- 28:47Speaker 7: chased than be the one who is trying to chase,
- 28:51Speaker 7: especially with time and the sands and the hourglass running out.
- 28:56Speaker 10: Yeah, and I think also, too, to that point, and
- 28:59Speaker 10: this is a place where I think the general sports
- 29:03Speaker 10: fan gets it. Just, you know, watching baseball, basketball, football,
- 29:06Speaker 10: if you're down, it's hard to come back. But I
- 29:08Speaker 10: think in hockey, more than any other sport, when you're down,
- 29:13Speaker 10: when you're down a goal, when you're down two goals,
- 29:16Speaker 10: that changes your entire roster deployment. That changes what lines
- 29:21Speaker 10: you're rolling out. That changes, you know, the personnel and
- 29:26Speaker 10: maybe your breakout. A lot of little things go into...
- 29:32Speaker 10: trying to come back especially in hockey so I do
- 29:34Speaker 10: think that's why it is so important getting the game's
- 29:37Speaker 10: first goal or if you're down being down early.
- 29:42Speaker 4: I mean, I would much rather be down.
- 29:44Speaker 10: If I had to be down, give me two nothing
- 29:46Speaker 10: in the first rather than two nothing in the third.
- 29:50Speaker 10: But that's why it's so important to get the first
- 29:53Speaker 10: goal because sometimes your entire game plan goes out the window.
- 29:57Speaker 10: When you are down two nothing, you get scored on early. Well, shoot,
- 30:02Speaker 10: now I got to go back to the drawing board
- 30:04Speaker 10: and figure something else out. And I think that's an
- 30:06Speaker 10: area that some folks might not really appreciate about coaching
- 30:10Speaker 10: and about how hard it is in this league when
- 30:13Speaker 10: you're playing down.
- 30:14Speaker 12: Yeah, and I would add to that as well, you know, again,
- 30:18Speaker 12: this would you rather idea.
- 30:19Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 30:21Speaker 12: I gave you the scenario of winning 6-0 with three
- 30:24Speaker 12: different players getting two goals. Well, the Kraken have been
- 30:26Speaker 12: getting a lot of points up and down their lineup.
- 30:28Speaker 12: So would you rather win games where it's primarily coming
- 30:32Speaker 12: from your top pair, D-Man, and your top line, or
- 30:35Speaker 12: would you rather win games where it's coming up and
- 30:37Speaker 12: down your lineup where you never know, is it going
- 30:39Speaker 12: to be the fourth line tonight? Is it going to
- 30:40Speaker 12: be the cat in line? Is it going to be
- 30:42Speaker 12: defenseman leading the charge with pucks in that? Like, I
- 30:45Speaker 12: would rather have that deep scoring ability rather than it
- 30:48Speaker 12: all coming from one or two superstars on my top line.
- 30:51Speaker 12: And I think that's actually a benefit that the Kraken,
- 30:55Speaker 12: I think it gets underplayed. We sort of joke about it.
- 30:58Speaker 12: We sort of don't. I think it's a big benefit
- 31:00Speaker 12: that this team has. And if they ever do develop
- 31:04Speaker 12: or get a superstar and they continue to get scoring
- 31:07Speaker 12: up and down the lineup, well, look out.
- 31:10Speaker 7: I want to get to Philip Grubauer's recent stretch because, again,
- 31:12Speaker 7: he was phenomenal last night, and he's started now for
- 31:16Speaker 7: the last five games, 3-0-1 in that stretch. Say percentage
- 31:22Speaker 7: at 900, it's okay, but a lot of tough saves
- 31:24Speaker 7: that he's also mixed in from that point. I think
- 31:28Speaker 7: from what we talked about and how you had to
- 31:30Speaker 7: balance goaltending based on this team's schedule, the back-to-backs, a
- 31:34Speaker 7: lot of travel mileage, how much do you ride Philip
- 31:37Speaker 7: Grubauer at this point? If you can't, how much do
- 31:40Speaker 7: you split him and Joey DeCord? And even then, where
- 31:43Speaker 7: do you fit Joey? Because the Kraken have no back-to-backs
- 31:46Speaker 7: now until the 27th and 28th of November. And the
- 31:50Speaker 7: next nine games, Minnesota, Toronto... Calgary twice, the Rangers, the
- 31:57Speaker 7: Finland series of Carolina, Vancouver, and San Jose.
- 32:01Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, I think the Finland series is easy.
- 32:03Speaker 12: I think you're going to see a split there. Part
- 32:06Speaker 12: of it because you're seeing the same team twice. Part
- 32:08Speaker 12: of it because it's the global series and you're going
- 32:10Speaker 12: to see both goaltenders. I'd be willing to bet a
- 32:12Speaker 12: dollar on that one. So that one seems easy to me.
- 32:15Speaker 12: But the rest of the mic, yeah, lack of back-to-backs
- 32:20Speaker 12: makes you think, hey, how long can you ride a
- 32:22Speaker 12: hot hand? At some point, though, they've got to get
- 32:27Speaker 12: Joey back into the mix because I– We all know
- 32:30Speaker 12: him as a person as much as we know him
- 32:31Speaker 12: as a goaltender. I know he wants to compete for
- 32:35Speaker 12: that number one position. I know he wants a chance
- 32:37Speaker 12: to wipe that Florida game off his plate and show
- 32:41Speaker 12: what he can do. And so, yeah, if I'm Joey Decord,
- 32:45Speaker 12: put me out against the top teams that my team's
- 32:48Speaker 12: playing in the next month. I want a chance to
- 32:50Speaker 12: go redeem myself. And I think the coaches know that
- 32:52Speaker 12: as well. I just don't know which game that's going
- 32:55Speaker 12: to be, especially when you've got Philip Grubauer playing so
- 32:58Speaker 12: well right now.
- 33:00Speaker 10: I'm a little torn on this because I do like
- 33:02Speaker 10: the idea of writing the hot hand and keeping the.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Hot hand going.
- 33:05Speaker 10: And, you know, I've said it before and I think
- 33:08Speaker 10: it bears repeating. You are going to need these points
- 33:13Speaker 10: in six months. So banking as many points as you
- 33:17Speaker 10: can right now is going to be.
- 33:19Speaker 4: A paramount.
- 33:21Speaker 10: It is of the utmost importance. And right now, Philip
- 33:23Speaker 10: Grubauer is winning games. I also don't want people to
- 33:27Speaker 10: conflate Grubauer playing well with Joey Decord playing bad, right?
- 33:34Speaker 4: Decord had one bad outing against, against, um, Florida, right?
- 33:39Speaker 10: Lane Lambert will tell you the whole team needed to
- 33:41Speaker 10: be better. You look at the Vegas game, me and
- 33:44Speaker 10: Alan JT went, uh, went through the goals in the
- 33:50Speaker 10: Vegas game and it's like man I don't know if
- 33:52Speaker 10: I can fault Joey for really any of them no
- 33:55Speaker 10: those are defensive breakdowns those were were goals that he
- 33:59Speaker 10: was you know had no shot on a lot of
- 34:01Speaker 10: them so that doesn't mean that Joey's been playing poorly
- 34:05Speaker 10: I just means Phillip's been playing very very well at
- 34:08Speaker 10: the moment so I do think though to Al's point
- 34:11Speaker 10: not only do you want to give Joey an opportunity
- 34:14Speaker 10: to get back and challenge for that number one spot,
- 34:17Speaker 10: you want Joey to get into a groove. I mean,
- 34:19Speaker 10: because you ideally would like both goaltenders to be ready
- 34:23Speaker 10: to come in at a moment's notice. And I think
- 34:26Speaker 10: with Grubauer now playing for the last five games, I'm
- 34:30Speaker 10: not going to sit here and say that Joey's cold.
- 34:32Speaker 4: You know, Joey, he's a gamer. He will be ready
- 34:34Speaker 4: to go when his number is called upon.
- 34:37Speaker 10: But if you can go back to a two and
- 34:40Speaker 10: two or three and two split or however you want
- 34:43Speaker 10: to do it, I think that you're going to put
- 34:45Speaker 10: both goalies in a chance or in a spot rather
- 34:48Speaker 10: to be, to be hot, to be in a groove,
- 34:51Speaker 10: to be nice and oiled up in limber and whatever.
- 34:53Speaker 10: But also I think Philip Grubauer, listen, father time wins
- 34:56Speaker 10: all battles, right? Not getting any younger, playing very well
- 35:00Speaker 10: right now, but he's had some injury problems over the
- 35:02Speaker 10: last few seasons. We've seen Grubauer take some extended time
- 35:06Speaker 10: off in the last couple of years. You don't want
- 35:08Speaker 10: that to happen in February and March because you rode
- 35:12Speaker 10: him too hard. I, in the beginning of the season.
- 35:16Speaker 10: So I think maybe you, you pull back on the
- 35:20Speaker 10: reins and I know that that's a horse pun. Maybe
- 35:24Speaker 10: you pull back on the reins a little bit for
- 35:27Speaker 10: the German cowboy, but I still think you allow him
- 35:31Speaker 10: to continue to, earning and rewarding him for earning the
- 35:35Speaker 10: playing time that he's got.
- 35:37Speaker 12: Yeah, there's definitely a mindset that you have to manage
- 35:40Speaker 12: as a coach, as a goaltender coach and as Lane
- 35:42Speaker 12: Lambert as well. And that is you've got Philip Grubauer
- 35:46Speaker 12: playing well, as you said, you want to keep him healthy,
- 35:48Speaker 12: but you want to reward him for.
- 35:50Speaker 5: Playing well as well.
- 35:52Speaker 12: At the same time, looking at the schedule, you've got
- 35:55Speaker 12: a couple of games against Calgary coming up. If you
- 35:58Speaker 12: played Grubauer for both Minnesota and Toronto and then went
- 36:01Speaker 12: to Joey Decord for the two games against Calgary, if
- 36:04Speaker 12: I'm Joey Decord, I almost feel insulted. Like, yeah, I
- 36:07Speaker 12: had a bad game in Florida, but a lot of
- 36:09Speaker 12: those weren't my fault, and now I'm getting the weaker teams.
- 36:13Speaker 12: So you have to think about that in terms of
- 36:15Speaker 12: if you ran the schedule that way and you gave
- 36:18Speaker 12: Joey Decord those two games against Calgary, maybe he wins
- 36:20Speaker 12: them both, and then you go to Carolina and split.
- 36:24Speaker 12: To Mike's point, at the end of the month, you've
- 36:26Speaker 12: got a back-to-back against Edmonton. You want both of those
- 36:29Speaker 12: goaltenders ready to go playing the top of their game
- 36:33Speaker 12: when you hit that back-to-back. And I think if you
- 36:36Speaker 12: give Joey Decord both those games in Calgary because you
- 36:38Speaker 12: think he's the number two goaltender right now, that might
- 36:41Speaker 12: not be good for his mindset.
- 36:42Speaker 7: Bob Condor is going to be joining us here in
- 36:44Speaker 7: just a little bit. And after so many years of
- 36:47Speaker 7: his dedication to SeattleKraken.com, the NHL, MSN.com, Chicago Tribune, Yahoo Sports,
- 36:56Speaker 7: the list goes on and on here. We want to
- 36:58Speaker 7: give Bob the appropriate kind of send-off from our own circle.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Radio wise.
- 37:03Speaker 7: And he's got so many stories here to write his
- 37:05Speaker 7: own book. I'm curious if he's going to get after
- 37:07Speaker 7: this with a little more time on his hands as
- 37:10Speaker 7: he's been very, very well traveled recently. But I think guys,
- 37:14Speaker 7: for me, what I want to touch on is the
- 37:16Speaker 7: Bob Condor experience. And it's something that I think anybody
- 37:22Speaker 7: who is elite at their position besides the obvious skill
- 37:26Speaker 7: component is very good at.
- 37:29Speaker 2: And it's warmth.
- 37:30Speaker 7: The moment that you meet Bob, he makes you feel
- 37:33Speaker 7: like one of his closest friends. I will never forget
- 37:37Speaker 7: the times that I spent with him, with you guys
- 37:40Speaker 7: on the team charter. I usually sit by him if
- 37:42Speaker 7: I'm jumping on board here for a road trip. But
- 37:45Speaker 7: it's his ability to make the human connection just from
- 37:49Speaker 7: the depths of his soul and be able to articulate
- 37:53Speaker 7: it from pen to paper or from what, you know,
- 37:56Speaker 7: he's mentioned before via typewriter. Now it's computer. It's really
- 38:02Speaker 7: amazing how you're able to cross paths with somebody who's
- 38:05Speaker 7: built up so many years to bank so many stories,
- 38:09Speaker 7: to meet so many heralded athletes, and he'll be a big,
- 38:12Speaker 7: big piece of this organization's foundation because he was there
- 38:17Speaker 7: front and center with the roof of Climate Pledge Arena
- 38:21Speaker 7: put right back up on cement poles while everything else
- 38:25Speaker 7: got raised underneath. He's got that story from day one,
- 38:29Speaker 7: but my Bob Condor experience, every day you see him,
- 38:34Speaker 7: the humility, the grace, the warmth that he presented always
- 38:40Speaker 7: put a smile on your face.
- 38:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean.
- 38:45Speaker 12: Gosh, you know, my relationship with Bob Condor is twofold.
- 38:50Speaker 5: It's personal and professional. And, you know, the professional side is.
- 38:54Speaker 12: Obviously he had his job, I had my job, but
- 38:56Speaker 12: we talked a lot about the team. We talked a
- 38:58Speaker 12: lot about what's going on, good and bad. You know,
- 39:02Speaker 12: we shared lots of those kinds of conversations. And you're right, Mike,
- 39:05Speaker 12: he's an authentic guy. He's a warm personality. You know,
- 39:10Speaker 12: his words resonate, whether they're written words or spoken words.
- 39:14Speaker 12: And And I'll miss having those conversations with them, but
- 39:18Speaker 12: just as much the personal conversations that we had. One
- 39:21Speaker 12: of the very first times that I would say I
- 39:24Speaker 12: really met Bob was in my first year with the
- 39:28Speaker 12: Kraken and out the team locker room at KCI, where
- 39:32Speaker 12: all the media gathers. We'd only spoken a couple of times,
- 39:36Speaker 12: you know, up until that point. And I walked up
- 39:40Speaker 12: to him and I said, Hey, Bob, how are you doing?
- 39:42Speaker 12: And he said, tough day. All my wife just died.
- 39:45Speaker 12: And Bob and I didn't really know each other at
- 39:49Speaker 12: that point, and my heart just fell out.
- 39:53Speaker 5: We all have wives.
- 39:55Speaker 12: Some of us are older than others, and it hit
- 39:59Speaker 12: me like a ton of bricks, and not in a
- 40:01Speaker 12: bad way, but in a way where I thought, wow,
- 40:03Speaker 12: this guy is.
- 40:05Speaker 5: Here working, he's opening his heart to me.
- 40:08Speaker 12: I wanted to grab him aside, give him a hug
- 40:10Speaker 12: and take him upstairs for a cup of coffee.
- 40:12Speaker 5: But, you know, we went in the room and did
- 40:13Speaker 5: our jobs.
- 40:14Speaker 12: But that was one of the very first deep conversations
- 40:17Speaker 12: I had with Bob.
- 40:18Speaker 5: And, you know, honestly, I mean, other than maybe you two.
- 40:22Speaker 12: I haven't had a conversation like that with anybody else
- 40:24Speaker 12: in the organization. And it really shows you the kind
- 40:27Speaker 12: of guy he is.
- 40:30Speaker 10: Yeah, Bob, Bob was one of was one of the
- 40:33Speaker 10: first people that I really interacted with and had a
- 40:37Speaker 10: relationship with when I got the job here back in 20. And,
- 40:42Speaker 10: you know, I've always I've always called Bob Condor a
- 40:47Speaker 10: sweetheart of a person.
- 40:49Speaker 4: He is just.
- 40:50Speaker 10: The sweetest, the kindest, the most gentle, the most genuine
- 40:55Speaker 10: person that I've come across. Not only does he know
- 41:01Speaker 10: his stuff, not only is he smart, is he brilliant,
- 41:04Speaker 10: is he talented, but he is just a good person.
- 41:08Speaker 10: And We've all heard Todd Letwicky and our saying here
- 41:13Speaker 10: at Seattle with the Kraken, make us better. And Bob
- 41:16Speaker 10: is one of those people who make us better every day.
- 41:21Speaker 4: He is one of those.
- 41:21Speaker 10: People who will leave every room, who has left every
- 41:26Speaker 10: room better than when he found it. And I think
- 41:32Speaker 10: that when you look at him and you see the
- 41:35Speaker 10: career that he's had, the publications he's written for, couple
- 41:40Speaker 10: of time Pulitzer finalists, um, you know, he's lived a
- 41:44Speaker 10: million lifetimes and, and I love, you know, talking to
- 41:47Speaker 10: him and, and he says that he's not done. You know,
- 41:50Speaker 10: this is one chapter of my life is over. Um,
- 41:54Speaker 10: but where I think I'm going to get kind of
- 41:56Speaker 10: emotional here is where him and I really connected is, um,
- 42:00Speaker 10: I'm adopted and he's got two adopted kids as well.
- 42:05Speaker 10: And when you hear the love, uh, that he has
- 42:08Speaker 10: for his kids and for his family. Um, you know,
- 42:12Speaker 10: he'll never, he'll never gush about it publicly, but his daughter, uh,
- 42:17Speaker 10: Lana Condor is, is a very, um, accomplished actress in Hollywood. And, uh,
- 42:24Speaker 10: he tells stories about how she'll go on, he'll go
- 42:27Speaker 10: on movie sets and Lana's just.
- 42:29Speaker 4: So proud to show off her dad.
- 42:31Speaker 10: And, and, you know, Bob, Bob Condor is, is helping
- 42:35Speaker 10: run coffee and helping. And she's putting them to work and,
- 42:38Speaker 10: and he loves it. And, and his son already in
- 42:41Speaker 10: the Navy serving our country. And then he's on these
- 42:45Speaker 10: advanced nuclear missions. submarines and and and i've asked him
- 42:49Speaker 10: before he was like you know hey i was like
- 42:51Speaker 10: bob what is what does arty do when he goes
- 42:54Speaker 10: well everett if i have to if i tell you
- 42:55Speaker 10: that i'll have to kill you it's it's very very
- 42:58Speaker 10: highly classified stuff but he's just so proud of of
- 43:02Speaker 10: his kids and of his family and we're all fathers
- 43:05Speaker 10: here and and just the light that that is in
- 43:09Speaker 10: his eyes is whenever he talks about his family. Um,
- 43:13Speaker 10: and again, it hits especially home for me because I'm
- 43:15Speaker 10: also adopted. So to, to open up his home to
- 43:19Speaker 10: two strangers when they were babies and now they are
- 43:23Speaker 10: his whole life. Um, and it's, that's what I'm going
- 43:27Speaker 10: to remember Bob for not, not the talented storyteller, not the,
- 43:33Speaker 10: the amazing award winning caliber writer, uh, but just the
- 43:38Speaker 10: person that Bob is.
- 43:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 12: You know, you think about it and when you run
- 43:43Speaker 12: across people in your lives that you see as good
- 43:48Speaker 12: people like this, you two are great examples, but I
- 43:51Speaker 12: just mean other people where you like that person, that, that, that,
- 43:55Speaker 12: that woman, that man, great person, very first thought I
- 43:58Speaker 12: always have. And you probably do as well as, as
- 44:00Speaker 12: parents is I'd like to meet their parents.
- 44:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:03Speaker 12: Bob and Mary raised some very good kids.
- 44:07Speaker 5: I haven't had a chance to meet them. You have,
- 44:09Speaker 5: it sounds like.
- 44:10Speaker 12: But from what I hear from from from what how
- 44:13Speaker 12: Bob talks about them, he's raised a couple of good individual,
- 44:17Speaker 12: a couple of good human beings.
- 44:19Speaker 5: And whenever you meet those kind of people, I always
- 44:21Speaker 5: want to.
- 44:21Speaker 12: Meet the parents because they were the ones that got
- 44:24Speaker 12: that started.
- 44:24Speaker 7: That's such a great point. We're going to get to
- 44:26Speaker 7: Bob Condor here coming up in just a bit. I
- 44:28Speaker 7: also do want to touch on later. about the five-year
- 44:30Speaker 7: anniversary of Climate Pledge Arena. Everett, Al, you, me as well,
- 44:35Speaker 7: we were all in different spaces here in one way
- 44:38Speaker 7: or the other, but in that building that night.
- 44:40Speaker 4: We were all there in very different capacities.
- 44:43Speaker 7: Yeah, we will never, ever forget it. And I thought
- 44:46Speaker 7: it was a very, very important piece. the foundation being
- 44:50Speaker 7: laid for hockey in Seattle and for what this community
- 44:53Speaker 7: is all about. But our Kraken Weekly Poll question, what's
- 44:56Speaker 7: most accurate about the Kraken to you at this point?
- 44:58Speaker 7: Is it the strong first and second periods, or is
- 45:01Speaker 7: it more third-period concern? Poll's open right now. Vote at
- 45:05Speaker 7: KrakenAudioNet at Twitter and X, and we'll get to that. Plus, also,
- 45:09Speaker 7: Your mailbag questions right around the condor, right around the corner.
- 45:13Speaker 7: Bob Condor. Bob Condor. That was not intentional, by the way,
- 45:18Speaker 7: but I'll try to.
- 45:21Speaker 4: That was awesome, Mike. Keep that in.
- 45:24Speaker 7: Right around the condor is Bob Condor. He's around the
- 45:27Speaker 7: corner here on Kraken Weekly.
- 45:37Speaker 9: Montour to the.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Half wall, the captain, back to Montour, climbs, fires, scores!
- 45:43Speaker 2: This is Brandon Montour, back to Kraken Weekly.
- 45:46Speaker 5: With Mike Benton.
- 45:46Speaker 7: Time to check up with AHL Matters and Coachella Valley.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Pretty big night that J.R. Avon had back on Wednesday.
- 45:53Speaker 7: He scored not once, but twice in the final two
- 45:56Speaker 7: minutes of regulation.
- 45:58Speaker 2: And the Firebirds snapping out of a four-game.
- 46:00Speaker 7: Winless skid for a pretty emotional 3-2 win over the
- 46:04Speaker 7: San Diego Gulls on the road on Wednesday night. That
- 46:08Speaker 7: puts Coachella Valley, though it's early, one point back at
- 46:12Speaker 7: first place in a very clustered Pacific Division at 3-2, 2-1.
- 46:16Speaker 7: And they're going to enjoy the comforts of home for
- 46:20Speaker 7: a little while, opening up tonight with a four-game homestand
- 46:24Speaker 7: against the San Jose Barracuda, 7 o'clock at Accresher Arena.
- 46:28Speaker 7: tucson henderson and colorado will immediately follow after that lean
- 46:35Speaker 7: score right now here for the firebirds who just got
- 46:37Speaker 7: ty nelson back from the kraken is a fellow blue
- 46:40Speaker 7: liner and right now a facilitator tyson jugna 13 points
- 46:44Speaker 7: that leads the firebirds and scoring all have come via
- 46:48Speaker 7: assists three points back of him Jagger-Ferkus, 10 points in
- 46:53Speaker 7: eight games. Yanni Newman, who is filling the net right now,
- 46:56Speaker 7: 10 points also in eight games. He owns eight goals
- 47:00Speaker 7: on the season, and he is your leading goal scorer
- 47:03Speaker 7: right now early on in the American Hockey League season.
- 47:06Speaker 2: That's our check-in here for Coachella Valley.
- 47:09Speaker 7: All right, on to the main event here for this
- 47:11Speaker 7: week of Kraken Weekly. This man needs no further introduction,
- 47:15Speaker 7: but I'll do it anyway here because before joining the
- 47:18Speaker 7: Kraken with a written word, He was at one point
- 47:21Speaker 7: VP and editor-in-chief for sports media at Yahoo. He was
- 47:25Speaker 7: VP and editor-in-chief of the National Hockey League. He also
- 47:29Speaker 7: was working with the Seattle PIMSN.com Chicago Tribune.
- 47:34Speaker 2: He's got stories for days.
- 47:36Speaker 7: We will try to cram this in as much as possible,
- 47:39Speaker 7: but give this man a very much well-deserved send-off. Bob Condor,
- 47:44Speaker 7: who is retiring after years in this business and most
- 47:47Speaker 7: recently with SeattleKraken.com, joining us right now here on crack
- 47:52Speaker 7: and weekly the one and only we have to get
- 47:54Speaker 7: it out one more time one more time bob that's
- 47:57Speaker 7: uh that's a sound of endearment all meant for you
- 48:01Speaker 7: thank you for joining us you're a treasure you're a
- 48:03Speaker 7: legend you have left a legacy how are you doing
- 48:07Speaker 7: and what are you going to miss about doing the
- 48:09Speaker 7: day-to-day around here.
- 48:10Speaker 15: Well i'm doing well thank you for saying years instead
- 48:14Speaker 15: of 45 years but that is about what it is
- 48:16Speaker 15: if i if i do the math um Things are good.
- 48:19Speaker 9: I just got back. I literally got back.
- 48:22Speaker 15: Um, I left Japan on a Thursday night and I
- 48:25Speaker 15: got back here on Thursday afternoon, meaning yesterday, my son's
- 48:28Speaker 15: a neighbor officer over there and spent two weeks with him, uh,
- 48:32Speaker 15: with my brother and sister-in-law was fantastic. Really kind of,
- 48:36Speaker 15: I'd called a trip of a lifetime, but I think there's,
- 48:38Speaker 15: there's more to come. So he's actually flying in. He's
- 48:41Speaker 15: going to be here for 24 hours. Um, you guys
- 48:44Speaker 15: know where he'll be tonight. And, uh, Uh, it's all,
- 48:48Speaker 15: it's all good. I'm really happy to see how well
- 48:50Speaker 15: the team's been playing and, uh, the team has been
- 48:53Speaker 15: the guys and lane and the whole group have been really,
- 48:56Speaker 15: really kind and, um, very touched, you know, how much
- 48:59Speaker 15: they've gone out of their way to say things to me.
- 49:01Speaker 9: About, about coverage.
- 49:03Speaker 15: And I did, I have joked that I didn't even think, uh,
- 49:06Speaker 15: that bots even knew who I was much less, you know,
- 49:09Speaker 15: wanting to say nice things about me.
- 49:11Speaker 9: So, so yeah, it's been, uh, it's been humbling. Um, and, uh,
- 49:15Speaker 9: I'm really happy.
- 49:16Speaker 15: It's a, that the team has got off to a
- 49:19Speaker 15: great start because it is really fun to uh you
- 49:22Speaker 15: guys were there last night i'm sure and it's you
- 49:25Speaker 15: know you get that place rocking and they play the
- 49:27Speaker 15: kind of hockey they played last night and on the
- 49:30Speaker 15: trip um it's going to be a pretty fun winter.
- 49:33Speaker 7: It's crazy just how much this whole thing is mushroomed
- 49:35Speaker 7: here in the last week or so. And, you know,
- 49:37Speaker 7: I just kind of check around the league and there's
- 49:39Speaker 7: a few more believers every day that's kind of jumping
- 49:41Speaker 7: on here with this team and the spot that they're
- 49:43Speaker 7: in right now. But you sent these guys off here
- 49:45Speaker 7: on a great note and we're looking forward to seeing
- 49:47Speaker 7: more of you down the road at some point in
- 49:49Speaker 7: some shape or form. But I mean, first I go
- 49:51Speaker 7: back here through all the years that you've worked, Bob.
- 49:53Speaker 7: I mean, you've written a book before about Michael Jordan.
- 49:57Speaker 7: Are you going to write a book about your own career?
- 49:59Speaker 9: There's a lot of people, you know, it's funny, people
- 50:01Speaker 9: have asked me that.
- 50:02Speaker 15: And I think the answer to that is, if I
- 50:06Speaker 15: write something that is relevant for not only you three,
- 50:12Speaker 15: but anybody who were to read the book, then it's
- 50:15Speaker 15: a worthy memoir or a worthy thing to do.
- 50:18Speaker 9: And if somebody convinces me that's in the business.
- 50:22Speaker 15: That what I could write and talk about would help
- 50:25Speaker 15: people relate to their own lives, I'm all for it.
- 50:29Speaker 9: Those are the best memoirs. And I'm not opposed to it.
- 50:32Speaker 15: I've had a lot of people ask me that question.
- 50:35Speaker 15: But short term, I think I'm going to just let
- 50:39Speaker 15: that be an idea that's a possibility, but not go
- 50:44Speaker 15: too quickly at it. I have thought about just starting
- 50:48Speaker 15: to write some notes about what might be relevant. I
- 50:51Speaker 15: don't want to call it life lessons, but just things
- 50:54Speaker 15: that can apply to people's lives. I mean, when I
- 50:58Speaker 15: wrote Health and Wellness, which I did for about 15 years,
- 51:01Speaker 15: I always wanted to do two things. One is have
- 51:04Speaker 15: that person, whoever read it, go be able to do
- 51:09Speaker 15: something in their lives, which helps them be healthier, more well,
- 51:12Speaker 15: so on.
- 51:13Speaker 9: And then I've always.
- 51:14Speaker 15: Wanted people to walk away from anything I write with
- 51:17Speaker 15: some hope. A little harder to do when you lose
- 51:20Speaker 15: seven to three or something like that, but yes, you know,
- 51:22Speaker 15: on On the health side, it's just I want people
- 51:25Speaker 15: to feel better about the prospects of getting healthier, feeling good,
- 51:30Speaker 15: if they're concerned about a.
- 51:31Speaker 9: Relative, all those things.
- 51:34Speaker 5: And if I can do that with a.
- 51:35Speaker 15: Memoir, then maybe I'll take a crack at it. But
- 51:39Speaker 15: it's not first on my list.
- 51:41Speaker 10: Let's go back to an 8-year-old Bob Condor, 10-year-old Bob Condor.
- 51:47Speaker 10: Where did your love of writing and storytelling come from?
- 51:51Speaker 9: What a great question.
- 51:52Speaker 15: You're going to get some of my material for tonight early,
- 51:56Speaker 15: I guess.
- 51:58Speaker 9: So a couple of things. My mom read three papers
- 52:03Speaker 9: a day.
- 52:03Speaker 15: And I basically, probably from the time I could start reading,
- 52:10Speaker 15: which was early, I basically would walk away with the
- 52:13Speaker 15: sports section from whatever paper.
- 52:15Speaker 9: The two in particular were the Tribune.
- 52:18Speaker 15: Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Daily News, the former Chicago
- 52:22Speaker 15: Daily News, just started reading those, you know, reading those
- 52:27Speaker 15: sports sections. And we had some, we had writers who,
- 52:30Speaker 15: when I ended up being their boss, you know, 20
- 52:33Speaker 15: years later or 25 years later, that said, if you
- 52:37Speaker 15: tell anybody you read me when you're six years old,
- 52:39Speaker 15: I'm going to kill you. But there were writers, Bob
- 52:42Speaker 15: Verde among them, that were writing for Beat Reporters and
- 52:45Speaker 15: at the time. And he was a beautiful writer and
- 52:48Speaker 15: I fell in love. I, when I went to grad
- 52:50Speaker 15: school for journalism, I tried to write like him for
- 52:52Speaker 15: about six months and then realized, okay, I've got my own,
- 52:56Speaker 15: my own style, but that's where it started.
- 52:58Speaker 9: And you know, over the years.
- 53:02Speaker 15: Just had to write mentor to, to, to really fuel,
- 53:06Speaker 15: you know, that I could, that I could not just
- 53:08Speaker 15: be an editor, but that I could do my own
- 53:09Speaker 15: writing too.
- 53:11Speaker 12: Bob, you've written about health and wellness, obviously written about
- 53:14Speaker 12: sports as well. What's your favorite thing to write about?
- 53:19Speaker 12: And maybe a follow-up to that or an addition to
- 53:21Speaker 12: that is, is there a white whale out there that
- 53:23Speaker 12: you just haven't caught as far as something you wanted
- 53:27Speaker 12: to write about?
- 53:28Speaker 9: Yeah, that's a great question. I would say, no offense
- 53:33Speaker 9: to the entire sporting.
- 53:35Speaker 15: World, but I would say that I've Even with the
- 53:39Speaker 15: crack in writing about people, writing about what we do
- 53:44Speaker 15: in the community, I've said from day one, and I
- 53:48Speaker 15: was previous to day one, if you will, because I
- 53:50Speaker 15: was in early 2019 with even coming up with the
- 53:53Speaker 15: name of the team.
- 53:54Speaker 9: We're of the community. We're not just writing.
- 54:00Speaker 15: We don't just show up, and there's nothing wrong with
- 54:02Speaker 15: showing up in hospitals, but we don't just do those
- 54:05Speaker 15: kinds of things.
- 54:05Speaker 9: We really are out. building courts, you know.
- 54:08Speaker 15: Getting kids on the ice, the Rewa program with the
- 54:11Speaker 15: refugee kids, the 36 straight weeks they go out and
- 54:15Speaker 15: skate at the iceplex and those things I love.
- 54:18Speaker 9: And that's, you know, to me when I.
- 54:21Speaker 15: Heard he touched on it, but things that give people
- 54:23Speaker 15: hope or make them feel good. It's a little broad,
- 54:27Speaker 15: but I'd say that's, you know, those are the things
- 54:29Speaker 15: that I most enjoy in.
- 54:32Speaker 9: Terms of sports itself.
- 54:34Speaker 15: I always thought the Olympics were a blast because there's
- 54:37Speaker 15: so many different types of competition and so many great
- 54:40Speaker 15: stories about how that athlete got there, right?
- 54:43Speaker 9: And then I'll.
- 54:46Speaker 15: Say this, I mean, it's the white whale thing. There's
- 54:51Speaker 15: probably a person or an organization I'd like to do
- 54:56Speaker 15: a biography on. I just don't know quite who that
- 54:58Speaker 15: might be. I've got some ideas, but yeah, those are,
- 55:02Speaker 15: I mean, it's like, covering marathons, which I got a
- 55:06Speaker 15: chance to see a couple of people win and break records.
- 55:09Speaker 9: But with the really cool part and what.
- 55:11Speaker 15: Got me going about even doing more myself was to
- 55:14Speaker 15: go back out after I found my story and see
- 55:17Speaker 15: the three and a half, four hour people coming in.
- 55:19Speaker 9: And you guys have all seen it.
- 55:21Speaker 15: They're just, it gives me goosebumps even thinking about how
- 55:24Speaker 15: happy all those people are.
- 55:26Speaker 9: And of course I have my.
- 55:27Speaker 15: Own from the New York city marathon, uh, where I'm
- 55:30Speaker 15: finishing over four hours because it was hot, but it
- 55:33Speaker 15: was a little over four hours.
- 55:35Speaker 9: And I look like a mess.
- 55:37Speaker 15: And there's like, I'm swear to God, the guy's probably
- 55:39Speaker 15: like Czechoslovakian, white hair, you know, two.
- 55:42Speaker 9: Feet behind me.
- 55:43Speaker 15: And he looks dry as, you know, as the desert
- 55:46Speaker 15: and very spunky. And like he could run another 26
- 55:48Speaker 15: and I'm dragging myself in, you know, with the old
- 55:51Speaker 15: walk man in the, in my shorts and the whole thing.
- 55:54Speaker 15: It's just, it's, it's hilarious. But those are that sort
- 55:57Speaker 15: of human victory stuff or, you know, impressing our own selves.
- 56:02Speaker 15: And that's the most important thing to me.
- 56:05Speaker 2: That's great stuff. Bob Condor joining us here on Kraken Weekly.
- 56:09Speaker 7: Bob, today is a pretty big red-letter day in Seattle
- 56:13Speaker 7: Kraken history. Five years ago, it was the first home
- 56:16Speaker 7: game in franchise history, and though the Kraken didn't win
- 56:19Speaker 7: against the Vancouver Canucks, they got the first goal in
- 56:22Speaker 7: the new building, and I will never forget how much
- 56:25Speaker 7: the place was electrifying. What will you remember about that
- 56:29Speaker 7: night and game nights at Climate Pledge Arena?
- 56:33Speaker 15: Yeah, the first thing I have to do when I
- 56:35Speaker 15: talk about Climate Pledge Arena is give a big, huge
- 56:39Speaker 15: shout out to a guy named Ken Johnson, who was
- 56:42Speaker 15: our construction lead when that place was built.
- 56:45Speaker 9: And we probably filmed 40 interviews.
- 56:50Speaker 15: I mean, and he was basically doing play by play
- 56:53Speaker 15: on how we were building the place. And then you
- 56:56Speaker 15: get to that first night and knowing that he was
- 56:59Speaker 15: up in the 200th, I think he, he, you know,
- 57:02Speaker 15: he's in the corner like a good scout. And, uh,
- 57:05Speaker 15: just knowing he was up there listening to that crowd
- 57:08Speaker 15: go nuts when, when Dunn scored the goal, uh, obviously
- 57:13Speaker 15: all of us felt you get, you know, you definitely
- 57:15Speaker 15: get the goosebumps going there. Or as Michael Jordan used
- 57:19Speaker 15: to call him the chill bumps. I'm not sure where
- 57:21Speaker 15: that came from, but that was his term.
- 57:23Speaker 16: Um, uh, to me, what was really cool about that was, uh,
- 57:28Speaker 16: I really feel like people can sit in the highest
- 57:31Speaker 16: seat in that place and feel like they're in an
- 57:33Speaker 16: intimate environment.
- 57:35Speaker 9: The so-called short bowl geometry, right?
- 57:39Speaker 15: And that was, I just remember sitting there thinking, I'm
- 57:42Speaker 15: sitting in the press box, press bridge, and I can
- 57:45Speaker 15: see the faces of people all over this arena. And that's,
- 57:49Speaker 15: as all of you know, that is not the common
- 57:52Speaker 15: threat at all 31 other arenas in the league, right?
- 57:56Speaker 9: And I don't know how you.
- 57:59Speaker 15: E and L, how you guys do that every night
- 58:00Speaker 15: because sometimes I can't read the numbers up and I
- 58:03Speaker 15: don't have to spit them out and talk to them
- 58:05Speaker 15: like you guys do.
- 58:09Speaker 10: Bob, you've been able, you've had the opportunity, you've had
- 58:13Speaker 10: the privilege to um, to cover a lot of amazing
- 58:16Speaker 10: events and people tell so many great stories. Where does
- 58:22Speaker 10: the Seattle Kraken and being here from day one and
- 58:26Speaker 10: telling this story from literally nothing to now, you know,
- 58:31Speaker 10: five full seasons plus a month and a half, where
- 58:35Speaker 10: does this experience rank for you?
- 58:38Speaker 15: Well, I'll go back to, um, A conversation I had
- 58:42Speaker 15: with my brother, Jim, who I just got done spending
- 58:45Speaker 15: two weeks with in Japan with he and his wife,
- 58:47Speaker 15: my sister-in-law, and Arthur, of course, my son.
- 58:53Speaker 9: When I called him and told him I.
- 58:54Speaker 15: Got the editor-in-chief job at the NHL, I was living
- 58:59Speaker 15: on Whidbey Island with my late wife, Mary, and our
- 59:02Speaker 15: kids who were at the time about 10 years old, maybe.
- 59:07Speaker 9: And I called him and told him what I.
- 59:09Speaker 15: you know that I got this job and he's like
- 59:12Speaker 15: you know what you said right and I'm like I
- 59:15Speaker 15: don't know what I said yesterday much less what I
- 59:17Speaker 15: might have said to you somewhere along the way probably
- 59:20Speaker 15: over more than one beer and uh he said to
- 59:23Speaker 15: me because I think I was probably out of fresh
- 59:26Speaker 15: out of school or something was what do you want
- 59:28Speaker 15: to do what's your dream and i literally said to
- 59:32Speaker 15: him because it was the early 80s i said i'd
- 59:35Speaker 15: really love to have an opportunity for hockey to be
- 59:39Speaker 15: a more of a national game here in the u.s
- 59:41Speaker 15: that would have a tv contract and people could watch
- 59:44Speaker 15: those games and you know just take the league which
- 59:48Speaker 15: you know had its own shine back then but just
- 59:51Speaker 15: take it and really get it to um that that
- 59:54Speaker 15: bigger place and of course um I kind of forgot
- 59:58Speaker 15: I had said that, but it was, it did hit
- 1:00:00Speaker 15: me pretty hard because I'm like, well, now I got
- 1:00:03Speaker 15: a chance here because what we basically did in 2008
- 1:00:07Speaker 15: is turn that website because Gary Bettman said, we.
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: Want to make it a new site. I said, if that's,
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: if you're serious, I'll move, right? We'll come. And we did.
- 1:00:17Speaker 15: And, you know, we, the numbers were great and we
- 1:00:19Speaker 15: got a chance to just be digital and get more video.
- 1:00:23Speaker 15: And so to me, that was the start of it.
- 1:00:26Speaker 15: And then when, Todd and I connected, Todd Laiweke, our CEO,
- 1:00:31Speaker 15: and he asked me to be part of it. It
- 1:00:35Speaker 15: couldn't have been more joyful for me because then I
- 1:00:37Speaker 15: had that opportunity to do that with a hockey team
- 1:00:41Speaker 15: here in Seattle.
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: Same thing, get it out in front of people.
- 1:00:44Speaker 15: And you see from last night, you see from Vince
- 1:00:47Speaker 15: Dunn's goal back in the first game that, you know,
- 1:00:51Speaker 15: this is a red hot hockey market and just, you know,
- 1:00:55Speaker 15: getting people going deep in that second year, which has
- 1:00:57Speaker 15: proved it. But so to me, it was kind of
- 1:01:01Speaker 15: a second chance to, to, you know, amplify and, and
- 1:01:05Speaker 15: lift up hockey, which in that Yahoo job in between
- 1:01:09Speaker 15: was kind of my last shot at running across all sports.
- 1:01:13Speaker 15: And so I've been very fortunate and very blessed to,
- 1:01:17Speaker 15: to have all those opportunities. And then to me is, Again, this,
- 1:01:23Speaker 15: I mean, I hit the jackpot with you three, with
- 1:01:25Speaker 15: everybody else that has to do with this team. I'm
- 1:01:29Speaker 15: really humbled that I had seven plus years to be
- 1:01:32Speaker 15: part of it.
- 1:01:33Speaker 12: Bob, you and I have had some deep personal conversations
- 1:01:37Speaker 12: and I've loved every one of them. And I get
- 1:01:39Speaker 12: the sense from you that that's part of your style
- 1:01:42Speaker 12: as well, is that you build relationships, you have real
- 1:01:45Speaker 12: conversations with people. Would you say that's part of the
- 1:01:49Speaker 12: secret of your success that you've had over the years? Obviously,
- 1:01:51Speaker 12: you're a great writer, but to sit down and write,
- 1:01:54Speaker 12: you really have to understand people and you have to
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: know about them and you have to have those deep conversations.
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: Would you say that's part of the secret of your success?
- 1:02:02Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, it's an interesting question in that, you know,
- 1:02:07Speaker 15: a lot of my stops, I was basically in charge of,
- 1:02:10Speaker 15: you know, 90 people at Yahoo or big staffs and
- 1:02:14Speaker 15: the New York daily news, which by the way, we
- 1:02:16Speaker 15: had three mafia reporters.
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: I had nothing to do with that reporting, but it was.
- 1:02:20Speaker 10: Waste management, Bob waste management.
- 1:02:27Speaker 15: So I've, so I've had the opportunity to the great
- 1:02:30Speaker 15: privilege privilege to, uh, run big groups. And, um, you know,
- 1:02:35Speaker 15: for me, there were, I used to take notes on, uh,
- 1:02:38Speaker 15: names of spouses and kids and, uh, just to get
- 1:02:42Speaker 15: to understand who people are and what their own dreams
- 1:02:46Speaker 15: and the loves of their life and all that, because
- 1:02:49Speaker 15: I think we're all better when we bring our full
- 1:02:52Speaker 15: selves to work, right?
- 1:02:54Speaker 9: And I learned that early.
- 1:02:56Speaker 15: Just because I was in the real estate development world
- 1:02:59Speaker 15: for three years and I went to work and I
- 1:03:01Speaker 15: wasn't the guy who I am now. And I knew
- 1:03:05Speaker 15: that if I kept doing that, I'd make a lot
- 1:03:07Speaker 15: of money and I wouldn't recognize myself. when I went
- 1:03:10Speaker 15: back out and had a chance to become a leader
- 1:03:12Speaker 15: in places and things clicked into place, it's remarkable how
- 1:03:17Speaker 15: many chances I got to be a leader. I always
- 1:03:21Speaker 15: said to myself, I just want, I want people, I
- 1:03:23Speaker 15: want the real person to be in that in, you know,
- 1:03:26Speaker 15: here in the office.
- 1:03:27Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:03:27Speaker 15: And I think that's, that fuels me in terms of what,
- 1:03:32Speaker 15: you know, what I can do and the writing thing, Al,
- 1:03:35Speaker 15: it's interesting because a lot of people who are editors,
- 1:03:39Speaker 15: they they and like for instance in the old days
- 1:03:42Speaker 15: you can have a really great copy editor who never
- 1:03:45Speaker 15: could get sprung from the copy desk to write because
- 1:03:48Speaker 15: they were so good at editing that they just couldn't
- 1:03:52Speaker 15: escape greg kott's a great example in chicago he's great
- 1:03:56Speaker 15: copy editor we had and his dream was to be
- 1:03:58Speaker 15: the rock critic and i'm like well why don't we
- 1:04:01Speaker 15: have you do that and he's like because nobody let
- 1:04:03Speaker 15: me off this desk and i let him off the
- 1:04:06Speaker 15: desk and he's won awards and then, you know, done
- 1:04:09Speaker 15: all sorts of great work. And that, that to me
- 1:04:12Speaker 15: is kind of what worked in my case, which was, um,
- 1:04:18Speaker 15: the fact that I knew it was time for me
- 1:04:20Speaker 15: to walk away. So I guess maybe we were trying
- 1:04:23Speaker 15: to have kids and had some miscarriages. And as you
- 1:04:26Speaker 15: guys know, we ended up adopting and I wrote a
- 1:04:28Speaker 15: story about the ups and downs of that that ended
- 1:04:32Speaker 15: up on the Tribune, uh, Sunday Tribune magazine cover during Christmas. And,
- 1:04:37Speaker 15: The editor-in-chief of the paper, who I loved, the managing editor, actually,
- 1:04:42Speaker 15: she's a Pulitzer winner. She called me that morning, you know,
- 1:04:45Speaker 15: like at 7 a.m. because she hadn't read the story.
- 1:04:47Speaker 9: It was busy.
- 1:04:49Speaker 15: It wasn't her job to edit it. But she called
- 1:04:52Speaker 15: me and said, I had no idea you could write
- 1:04:54Speaker 15: like that. And I said, and she was also very emotional,
- 1:04:57Speaker 15: but it was, I said, I know. And that's what
- 1:05:01Speaker 15: everybody thinks is editors, you know, that we just, all
- 1:05:03Speaker 15: we can do is, And strangely after that, because I
- 1:05:08Speaker 15: sort of went and did the health and wellness thing
- 1:05:10Speaker 15: so that I can see Arthur and Lana actually grow up.
- 1:05:14Speaker 15: And after that, I'd say there's probably eight senior type
- 1:05:18Speaker 15: editors at that paper who all said, oh, wait a minute,
- 1:05:21Speaker 15: I could write.
- 1:05:21Speaker 9: They'd let me write.
- 1:05:22Speaker 15: And a lot of people ended up doing it because
- 1:05:25Speaker 15: I sort of forced myself to do it. I just
- 1:05:28Speaker 15: went in and said, I don't want to be the
- 1:05:30Speaker 15: sports editor forever. I'll do it through blah, blah, blah.
- 1:05:33Speaker 15: And then I want to start this column.
- 1:05:35Speaker 10: So Bob, anybody who spends more than four minutes with
- 1:05:39Speaker 10: you knows that your family, your kids, obviously your late wife, Mary,
- 1:05:44Speaker 10: who I know that was a very hard and unimaginable tragedy.
- 1:05:49Speaker 10: You love your family. Family is number one for you.
- 1:05:53Speaker 10: What have they meant to you throughout your entire career?
- 1:05:57Speaker 10: Obviously we all have kids, we all travel and it's
- 1:06:00Speaker 10: hard to leave our kids and our families behind. But
- 1:06:03Speaker 10: for you, What has your family meant to you through
- 1:06:07Speaker 10: this year's journey? We won't say how many years, but
- 1:06:11Speaker 10: this year's journey for you and this fantastic career that
- 1:06:15Speaker 10: you've been able to create for yourself.
- 1:06:17Speaker 15: All right, we can say how many, because when I
- 1:06:20Speaker 15: got hired at Yahoo, I could not believe that in
- 1:06:23Speaker 15: the press release they actually put out how old I was.
- 1:06:25Speaker 15: I thought they'd you know, they would downplay that and
- 1:06:28Speaker 15: they wanted gravitas. So I turned 70. So we can talk,
- 1:06:33Speaker 15: you can do the math. If I started at 25,
- 1:06:36Speaker 15: a little late because of the early dip into real estate.
- 1:06:40Speaker 15: But to answer your question, I mean, you guys know,
- 1:06:45Speaker 15: you know, when you see the joy in your kids
- 1:06:47Speaker 15: and I just got two weeks with my son who's
- 1:06:50Speaker 15: 29 now. And it was just joyful to be around him. Right.
- 1:06:55Speaker 15: And just to see, I got a chance to go
- 1:06:58Speaker 15: to his Navy base and met some of the 42
- 1:07:01Speaker 15: people that report to him.
- 1:07:03Speaker 9: And every single one of them.
- 1:07:04Speaker 15: Just understood that Arthur was his complete self at work.
- 1:07:10Speaker 15: And as I mentioned earlier, that's just, and Lana, if
- 1:07:13Speaker 15: you guys have met her or know anything about her,
- 1:07:16Speaker 15: she's herself at work and at the, at Instagram and
- 1:07:20Speaker 15: anywhere else that people might, you know, see her and
- 1:07:23Speaker 15: get a look into her, her thoughts.
- 1:07:25Speaker 9: And that makes me really, really, really happy.
- 1:07:28Speaker 15: I've always said to both kids, I said, it's not
- 1:07:31Speaker 15: about me being proud of you. I want you to
- 1:07:33Speaker 15: be proud of yourselves and I want you to enjoy
- 1:07:36Speaker 15: what you do. And that gives me entirely so much
- 1:07:41Speaker 15: satisfaction that they're both, they're real people that they are
- 1:07:46Speaker 15: at work.
- 1:07:47Speaker 9: And then as it turns out, I.
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: Had, I.
- 1:07:52Speaker 15: Lost count of how many people came to me and
- 1:07:53Speaker 15: just said, Arthur's, you know, looks out for me.
- 1:07:56Speaker 9: He's smart. They don't all call him Arthur because they're
- 1:07:59Speaker 9: supposed to call him sir. And, you know, Mr. Condor
- 1:08:01Speaker 9: and all that stuff, but it's Navy. And same thing
- 1:08:05Speaker 9: with Lana.
- 1:08:05Speaker 15: When I'm at her places of work, it could be
- 1:08:09Speaker 15: an older guy who's been around that business a long time.
- 1:08:12Speaker 15: It could be a young person working, you know, as
- 1:08:15Speaker 15: a script supervisor. And they all say the same thing.
- 1:08:18Speaker 15: Like she brings energy every day. she gets food trucks
- 1:08:21Speaker 15: for people at the end of shoots. She's just, you know,
- 1:08:25Speaker 15: she's energy and happiness and can do attitude.
- 1:08:30Speaker 9: And Mary, you know, was a big part of that.
- 1:08:33Speaker 15: Both kids are when, when she was in the final
- 1:08:37Speaker 15: days of hospice, both kids and Arthur, especially went in
- 1:08:41Speaker 15: and just said, I'm, I'm you mom, you know, like
- 1:08:44Speaker 15: what I do in the world is because of the
- 1:08:48Speaker 15: way you were.
- 1:08:49Speaker 9: And, and believing in unconditional love.
- 1:08:52Speaker 15: And that's what it's about. So for me, and we
- 1:08:56Speaker 15: carry that, all three of us and anybody who was
- 1:08:59Speaker 15: close to Mary, we all carry that. We know that,
- 1:09:02Speaker 15: that she would want us, she, The very first thing
- 1:09:06Speaker 15: on her list for me was just stand up straight.
- 1:09:09Speaker 15: You hunch over too much, which you guys all know
- 1:09:11Speaker 15: if you've watched me over my computer.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: Good wife, always taking care, always making sure.
- 1:09:18Speaker 15: Along with that, I think she just wanted us to
- 1:09:20Speaker 15: live our lives and be ourselves. We're trying our best
- 1:09:23Speaker 15: to do that every day.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Bob, what's your advice to future and aspiring professionals?
- 1:09:29Speaker 15: My first piece of advice is don't listen to anybody
- 1:09:32Speaker 15: who thinks that journalism is not a chance to thrive,
- 1:09:38Speaker 15: and not just as what you do as a professional,
- 1:09:40Speaker 15: but I mean financially too. I mean, it's the most
- 1:09:44Speaker 15: important thing. Parents come to me and like, I'm really
- 1:09:47Speaker 15: worried my kid wants to be a journalist. I'm like,
- 1:09:49Speaker 15: you know what? If you're good, the money finds you.
- 1:09:53Speaker 15: If you know what, if you're worried about newspapers or
- 1:09:57Speaker 15: websites or apps going out of style or AI taking over,
- 1:10:03Speaker 15: If you love what you do and you're good at
- 1:10:05Speaker 15: it and you love it and care about it and
- 1:10:10Speaker 15: know you can get better, that's the first thing that
- 1:10:13Speaker 15: I say. It's just don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
- 1:10:18Speaker 9: You guys are parents, right? So you get this part.
- 1:10:20Speaker 15: When you have a little baby, you have a new kid,
- 1:10:23Speaker 15: everybody's like, oh, yeah, great, but wait until they're teenagers, right? Well,
- 1:10:27Speaker 15: I never thought that way. Our kids, it wasn't a
- 1:10:30Speaker 15: perfect teenage years, but I mean, If you dread it,
- 1:10:34Speaker 15: then you don't beautify it. You don't get to that
- 1:10:38Speaker 15: place where you, again, to see the sheer joy in
- 1:10:43Speaker 15: your children's eyes at whatever age it is, including teenage years.
- 1:10:47Speaker 15: And that's what I think about when I first talk
- 1:10:51Speaker 15: to people. But I do say, and I will say,
- 1:10:53Speaker 15: that if any of us in this business are afraid
- 1:10:58Speaker 15: to reinvent ourselves, we're in trouble, right?
- 1:11:01Speaker 9: Because I had no idea back.
- 1:11:03Speaker 15: In the early days of standing with, you know, the
- 1:11:06Speaker 15: Sunday business editor at the New York daily news, designing
- 1:11:09Speaker 15: a page that we were going to do all that
- 1:11:11Speaker 15: electronically soon enough.
- 1:11:13Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:11:14Speaker 15: And, and that, and yes, I wrote some stories on typewriters.
- 1:11:18Speaker 15: I literally went, it's believe it or not to the
- 1:11:22Speaker 15: museum of defunct media in, in Tokyo two days ago,
- 1:11:26Speaker 15: I was walking to go to seven 11, which there
- 1:11:30Speaker 15: is not, it's a little different seven. Let's just put
- 1:11:32Speaker 15: it that way. Um, and I was just walking over
- 1:11:35Speaker 15: to probably get a bottle of water or something. And
- 1:11:37Speaker 15: I saw this museum. I'm like, Oh, I got to
- 1:11:39Speaker 15: come in here.
- 1:11:40Speaker 9: And it's like every device that's all defunct now. And
- 1:11:44Speaker 9: it was just hilarious, but.
- 1:11:46Speaker 15: It did take me through thinking like there were lots
- 1:11:49Speaker 15: of things that I did at the NHL with the
- 1:11:52Speaker 15: app and video and running video groups that I had
- 1:11:57Speaker 15: no idea about that when I was, you know, doing
- 1:11:59Speaker 15: this Sunday, uh, tabloid, um, sports section at the Daily
- 1:12:03Speaker 15: News or the business section before that.
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: I remember Back to the Future Part 2 and when
- 1:12:08Speaker 7: they go into 2015 into an antique store, you see
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: a Macintosh Plus right front and center. I thought, yeah, that's...
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: It was kind of a sign of the times. They
- 1:12:16Speaker 7: predicted it here. But, Bob, we can take a lot
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: here from you. Well done, my man, on a reverent
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: and established and legendary career. We're looking forward to celebrating
- 1:12:27Speaker 7: you as well, too. But don't be a stranger. We'll
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: look forward to seeing you as well around these parts here.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Appreciate you.
- 1:12:32Speaker 9: All right, guys. Thank you for having me on. I'm
- 1:12:34Speaker 9: sure none of this was nearly as interesting as you
- 1:12:37Speaker 9: hoped it would be. Hey, Bob.
- 1:12:39Speaker 12: Bob, if you need Everett or Ida, come change that
- 1:12:41Speaker 12: battery over your head and that smoke detector.
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: We'll stop by. You know what?
- 1:12:47Speaker 9: That would actually be really good.
- 1:12:48Speaker 15: Because I'm now probably going to be somebody in the
- 1:12:52Speaker 15: building who's going to see this or listen to it
- 1:12:54Speaker 15: and think, we've got to get him fixed up.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: Your son's in town.
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: Get him on a ladder.
- 1:12:58Speaker 9: You guys are probably tall enough you could just get
- 1:13:00Speaker 9: up there.
- 1:13:01Speaker 7: Oh, we had to end this on a laugh here.
- 1:13:03Speaker 7: That's Bob Condor joining us.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Bob, thank you very much.
- 1:13:05Speaker 7: We'll come back with your mailbag questions here in just
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: a bit right here on Kraken Weekly.
- 1:13:20Speaker 10: Here comes Kako, rink wide across for Shane Wright, intercepted, knocked.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Down, Berkeley Cat scores! This is Berkeley Cat, now back,
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: Kraken Weekly, Mike Beck. Well, what memories we had. Big
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: thanks again to Bob Condor.
- 1:13:34Speaker 7: He'll always be a great friend of ours here in
- 1:13:36Speaker 7: Seattle and of this business. And again, you can catch
- 1:13:39Speaker 7: this interview podcasted once more at the iHeartRadio app. Mike Everett,
- 1:13:43Speaker 7: now with you back here on Kraken Weekly. Our update
- 1:13:47Speaker 7: right now on the poll question, what's most accurate about
- 1:13:50Speaker 7: the Kraken to you? As of this point, 66% of
- 1:13:54Speaker 7: you say it is their period concern.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Poll still open.
- 1:13:58Speaker 7: Go ahead, vote right now at Twitter and X at
- 1:14:01Speaker 7: Kraken Audio Net. Before we get to our mailbag segment,
- 1:14:06Speaker 7: I do want to touch on a very important date
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: that we got to with Bob earlier. And five years
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: ago today, was the first home game in Seattle Kraken
- 1:14:16Speaker 7: history at the brand spanking new Climate Pledge Arena. And
- 1:14:20Speaker 7: I'll kind of go around the horn as far as
- 1:14:22Speaker 7: what we remember here from that night. Everett, you were
- 1:14:25Speaker 7: up in the booth. It was technically your first game,
- 1:14:28Speaker 7: if you want to count.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Regular season games.
- 1:14:30Speaker 7: And that's a whole different story. That is a whole
- 1:14:32Speaker 7: different story in of itself. Al, you were not too
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: far away from the glass, still several hundred days away
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: from joining this broadcast team. I won't forget, number one,
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: walking into the building for the very first time, and
- 1:14:49Speaker 7: completely blown away by, A, the modern marvel of technology
- 1:14:56Speaker 7: that was built to all of a sudden be represented
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: for that night. Number two, just how incredible the sight
- 1:15:05Speaker 7: lines were from the press gondola looking down.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: I thought I was in a fever dream.
- 1:15:10Speaker 7: I had never been in a press box, honestly, with
- 1:15:14Speaker 7: better sight lines, and I was nearly blown back by
- 1:15:17Speaker 7: about two feet off my toes when I first saw it.
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: Number three, how loud the building sounded when Vince Dunn
- 1:15:24Speaker 7: scored to make it 1-0 Kraken on the power play
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: shortly before the first period horn. We led this show off.
- 1:15:33Speaker 7: With that call, Everett, you had it back then with
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: our newly departed Dave Tomlinson as well, who was serving
- 1:15:39Speaker 7: in the color analyst chair for the first couple of seasons. Yet,
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: I won't forget me missing the goal with my own
- 1:15:46Speaker 7: two eyes because usually when I depart the press box,
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: I tend to give myself a few minutes. The elevators
- 1:15:55Speaker 7: shut down. You got to get important people here, there, everywhere.
- 1:15:58Speaker 7: I jumped in and began to make it kind of
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: a routine for me to leave with five minutes left,
- 1:16:06Speaker 7: get down to section 20 and The set's pushed far back,
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: so I can't see from my own seat. So usually
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: I drop my stuff off, kind of keep my side
- 1:16:16Speaker 7: eye on it as well, but then go to the
- 1:16:18Speaker 7: very top of section 20 so I can look at
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: the play. And the Kraken are buzzing back in the
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: Vancouver zone on the power play. But the clock is
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: winding down. Me in my first home game, I'm taking
- 1:16:32Speaker 7: extra precaution to make sure that I am ready for
- 1:16:34Speaker 7: when I have to actually talk on a live microphone.
- 1:16:37Speaker 7: So I thought, Give this still about 10 seconds.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: Wait for it. Wait for it. If it gets to
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: 10 seconds, then leave. U-turn.
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: Go right to your chair. All of a sudden, I
- 1:16:49Speaker 7: turn around and I hear ping, bar down and in.
- 1:16:54Speaker 7: Goal horn goes off. Crowd goes crazy. So I missed
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: the Vince Dunn goal. But I will never forget how
- 1:17:02Speaker 7: that building sounded, where it was akin to an overtime
- 1:17:06Speaker 7: playoff victory. And it brought the Seattle professional sports energy
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: as advertised from night number one.
- 1:17:16Speaker 10: If Mike Benton isn't around to hear that, to see
- 1:17:18Speaker 10: the goal that it actually happened.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: No, that, that night for me, I mean, that was awesome.
- 1:17:25Speaker 10: You touched on it. I, I had gotten COVID right
- 1:17:30Speaker 10: before the team left for Vegas. So the very first
- 1:17:34Speaker 10: crack in road trip, the first five games, Vegas, Nashville, Columbus, Jersey,
- 1:17:40Speaker 10: and Philly I missed. And, I've told the story a
- 1:17:44Speaker 10: million times. I'll tell a very abbreviated version of the story.
- 1:17:48Speaker 10: Elliott Friedman of SportsTech called me. I had no idea
- 1:17:52Speaker 10: he even had my number. And I was in a
- 1:17:54Speaker 10: bad place mentally and emotionally. I'm like, oh, I'm missing
- 1:17:58Speaker 10: my childhood dream. They're going to fire me for getting COVID.
- 1:18:01Speaker 10: And he talked me off a ledge. And I will
- 1:18:04Speaker 10: forever be grateful for Elliott Friedman and his words that day.
- 1:18:08Speaker 10: But my first thought was, don't you mess up that
- 1:18:11Speaker 10: first goal call.
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: And I was happy. That it was done. It was ping.
- 1:18:17Speaker 10: It was as easy as a call as you're going to.
- 1:18:19Speaker 10: I didn't want any tips. I didn't want any offsides.
- 1:18:22Speaker 10: It was a broadcaster's dream. But for me, what stands
- 1:18:27Speaker 10: out about that day. If you asked me two days
- 1:18:30Speaker 10: ago who won that game, I couldn't tell you. I
- 1:18:33Speaker 10: remember the crowd. I remember all of my coworkers. I
- 1:18:37Speaker 10: remember the fans and the people in that building who
- 1:18:40Speaker 10: had been waiting so long for this team to come
- 1:18:43Speaker 10: to Seattle. I unbeknownst to me, I was, I was
- 1:18:49Speaker 10: thinking of Al in the corner who played for the
- 1:18:51Speaker 10: T birds back in the day and who finally now
- 1:18:54Speaker 10: after 30 years of living in Seattle, has his own
- 1:18:58Speaker 10: hockey team to cheer for. Um, I met a guy
- 1:19:01Speaker 10: from Boston who lives in Seattle and he used to
- 1:19:04Speaker 10: go to Vancouver all the time to watch the Bruins play.
- 1:19:08Speaker 10: He was at every game of the finals back in 11.
- 1:19:10Speaker 10: And he told me once, he said, now my granddaughter's
- 1:19:13Speaker 10: got her own team to cheer for. Um, I'm very excited.
- 1:19:16Speaker 10: Like that's what I'm going to remember about that day
- 1:19:18Speaker 10: is it was a culmination of all the hard work
- 1:19:21Speaker 10: and the passion and the the desire of Seattle sports fans,
- 1:19:25Speaker 10: of Climate Pledge Arena employees, of Kraken employees, all of us.
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: Who have moved from all over the world to be
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: a part of this venture, that's what stood out to
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: me about that day. And like I said, I.
- 1:19:38Speaker 10: Didn't know who won the game. I knew Dunn scored
- 1:19:40Speaker 10: the first goal, didn't care. The result for me was
- 1:19:44Speaker 10: just icing on the cake if they had have won
- 1:19:47Speaker 10: But it was just the importance of that day for
- 1:19:51Speaker 10: so many people in our area. That's what I'm going
- 1:19:54Speaker 10: to remember. That is what I still remember most about
- 1:19:57Speaker 10: that day. And also, my wife was in the building.
- 1:20:00Speaker 10: My sister-in-law was in the building. And we didn't know
- 1:20:03Speaker 10: it at the time, but my son was in the
- 1:20:06Speaker 10: building because Shelly was pregnant. And we didn't find out
- 1:20:09Speaker 10: that she was pregnant until.
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: About three weeks later.
- 1:20:14Speaker 10: Later four weeks a month later um so yeah that
- 1:20:17Speaker 10: was a very special day for the pincy family and
- 1:20:19Speaker 10: then for me personally as well that's awesome yeah i
- 1:20:22Speaker 10: mean for me it was uh being a kraken fan
- 1:20:25Speaker 10: from the beginning uh ironically i too just like bob
- 1:20:29Speaker 10: condor was in the corporate real estate business during that
- 1:20:32Speaker 10: game and friend of the broadcast booth chris soriano called
- 1:20:36Speaker 10: me and said hey do you want to go to
- 1:20:37Speaker 10: this opening game and i'm like yeah i'd like to
- 1:20:40Speaker 10: go He goes, I got good seats.
- 1:20:42Speaker 12: And yep, they were down on the glass at the
- 1:20:45Speaker 12: opposition end. And I said, yep, can't get any better
- 1:20:48Speaker 12: than that.
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 1:20:49Speaker 12: But I went as a fan that had hung up
- 1:20:53Speaker 12: his broadcasting headset with the Everett Silver Tips a few
- 1:20:57Speaker 12: years prior to that. with no expectations of ever ending
- 1:21:01Speaker 12: up 100 feet above the ice next to you, Everett,
- 1:21:04Speaker 12: just went as a fan.
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: And you're right.
- 1:21:06Speaker 12: It was so cool to be in a sold-out building,
- 1:21:09Speaker 12: to be sitting in a building that I had played
- 1:21:13Speaker 12: in as a kid that had been renovated, like Mike said,
- 1:21:15Speaker 12: modern marvel of technology and innovation.
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: It was so cool to see an NHL team in Seattle.
- 1:21:24Speaker 12: And then obviously that first goal, unlike Mike, I was
- 1:21:27Speaker 12: 20 feet away from it. I felt the spray of
- 1:21:32Speaker 12: Vince Dunn as his skate stopped after scoring that goal.
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: But, you know.
- 1:21:38Speaker 12: Looking back on that, I thought this is the beginning
- 1:21:41Speaker 12: of something great. And by something great, I meant an
- 1:21:44Speaker 12: NHL team coming to Seattle again with no expectation that
- 1:21:49Speaker 12: three years down the road, I'd be starting as the
- 1:21:52Speaker 12: color analyst alongside of you two in the broadcast booth. So, yeah,
- 1:21:57Speaker 12: it was a pretty special night for me for different reasons.
- 1:22:00Speaker 12: But I like how the story has changed.
- 1:22:03Speaker 7: I love how I found you in the broadcast booth
- 1:22:05Speaker 7: that night, of course, once everything was all done to
- 1:22:07Speaker 7: bring you on board.
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: And I went, oh, great.
- 1:22:09Speaker 7: So I didn't chase you out of the Everett Silvertips
- 1:22:11Speaker 7: broadcast booth. I can finally rest easy now. 1956, Vince
- 1:22:13Speaker 7: Dunn from Adam Larson and Jonas Donskoy. That's how it
- 1:22:21Speaker 7: goes down in the score sheet.
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: Let's remember some guys.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: Let's remember some guys.
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: What a guy. I love that guy. He's awesome. He's
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: such a good guy.
- 1:22:28Speaker 7: Go ahead, goal for the Kraken of 509, a period three.
- 1:22:31Speaker 7: Mark Giordano from Jared McCann and Alex Wenberg. After that,
- 1:22:36Speaker 7: I wave the light here from Men in Black. We
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: don't remember anything else after that.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: Again, that night was so important for us as a city,
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: for us as an organization.
- 1:22:48Speaker 10: You wanted to win the game, but for me, winning
- 1:22:51Speaker 10: that game would have just been icing on an already delicious, decadent,
- 1:22:58Speaker 10: and indulgent cake.
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: And you can certainly tell after that that this fan
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: base was in a good spot. The city was in
- 1:23:04Speaker 7: a good spot. And this team has continued to sell
- 1:23:07Speaker 7: out games all the way here into season six. All right,
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: to our mailbag segment we go. Once again, you can
- 1:23:13Speaker 7: find me at Twitter and X at Benton underscore Mike
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: Everett at The Voice Fits.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Al Koniski is, of course, at Al Koniski. From Mattie S.
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: after the Utah win, are we prepared to say this
- 1:23:24Speaker 7: team is for real or do we need to see
- 1:23:28Speaker 7: how they fare against Minnesota and Toronto? I'm right now
- 1:23:34Speaker 7: at the state.
- 1:23:38Speaker 7: Say it or don't say it, say it or don't
- 1:23:41Speaker 7: say it. I'm at the state of, of, of cautious
- 1:23:46Speaker 7: optimism right now. And as I said earlier off the top,
- 1:23:50Speaker 7: it's better than where it was two weeks ago. So Maddie,
- 1:23:54Speaker 7: I'll give you that here, but I'll give you this again.
- 1:23:57Speaker 7: Are they getting good goaltending? The answer is yes. Are
- 1:23:59Speaker 7: they getting depth? The answer is yes. Is a perfect no.
- 1:24:03Speaker 7: And we can still talk about how maybe, you know,
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: the bottom six is right now outweighing the top six,
- 1:24:08Speaker 7: but things can still certainly change because we are still
- 1:24:10Speaker 7: this young into the season. Are special teams making an
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: impact enough? I would say the answer is yes. Is
- 1:24:16Speaker 7: a perfect no. But I was far and away more
- 1:24:20Speaker 7: convicted and convinced. They're moving in the right direction on
- 1:24:24Speaker 7: how they established their game last two nights and And
- 1:24:29Speaker 7: just now, the issue, you've got to clean things up
- 1:24:31Speaker 7: here in period three. Al said this earlier. I'll repeat
- 1:24:35Speaker 7: it once again. I feel better about fixing things in
- 1:24:38Speaker 7: the third period corner rather than why are you consistently
- 1:24:43Speaker 7: falling behind 2-0 or 3-0 and having to play catch-up?
- 1:24:50Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, 11 games into the season, guys... I
- 1:24:55Speaker 12: don't think anybody predicted that Seattle will be sitting in
- 1:24:58Speaker 12: third place right now with the Pacific. I think that
- 1:25:00Speaker 12: when you look at the standings and you see Calgary
- 1:25:02Speaker 12: and Vancouver at the bottom, probably no surprise. or some
- 1:25:16Speaker 12: mix of the bottom three. Instead, you see Los Angeles
- 1:25:19Speaker 12: with two wins so far in the season. I don't
- 1:25:21Speaker 12: think anybody was talking about Los Angeles with two wins.
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: Eight games in. San Jose, they've got six wins.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: Anaheim's lost five in a row.
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: Anaheim with four wins.
- 1:25:34Speaker 12: Again, these were all teams that were talked about as
- 1:25:37Speaker 12: likely playoff teams that would be above the Seattle Kraken. Again,
- 1:25:42Speaker 12: we're 10, 11 games into this season. It's still early,
- 1:25:46Speaker 12: but it kind of feels good to brush off the
- 1:25:49Speaker 12: naysayers a little bit. Still got a lot of work due,
- 1:25:52Speaker 12: still got a lot of season to do, but.
- 1:25:56Speaker 12: The Kraken are starting to compete in not just the
- 1:25:59Speaker 12: Calgary games, not just the Detroit games, but also in
- 1:26:02Speaker 12: the Edmonton games, in the Tampa Bay games, in the.
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: Utah games.
- 1:26:08Speaker 12: And when you see them competing and getting points and
- 1:26:10Speaker 12: getting wins, it starts to make you think, those naysayers,
- 1:26:14Speaker 12: they might have been wrong.
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: I think two things can be true. I think this
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: team can be.
- 1:26:19Speaker 10: Better than they were last year with the same personnel
- 1:26:23Speaker 10: that they had last year. And I think a lot
- 1:26:25Speaker 10: of it is just due to, I said it last week,
- 1:26:28Speaker 10: Lane Lambert, second year, the learning curve.
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: Wasn't as sharp.
- 1:26:32Speaker 10: There was an expectation going into the year that, Hey,
- 1:26:36Speaker 10: we know what we're, what we have to do. We
- 1:26:38Speaker 10: know how this team is supposed to play, how Lane
- 1:26:41Speaker 10: expects us to play.
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: I think a big summer for shade, right.
- 1:26:45Speaker 10: And Um, you know, the bottom six, four group, I
- 1:26:50Speaker 10: loved Al your note on, you know, your, your top
- 1:26:54Speaker 10: line's got 19 points. Your third line's got 19 points,
- 1:26:57Speaker 10: but your third line is playing two and a half minutes,
- 1:26:59Speaker 10: three minutes fewer per game. Right.
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: Like that.
- 1:27:03Speaker 12: And in addition to that, that top line's playing a
- 1:27:05Speaker 12: lot of power play time compared to that third line
- 1:27:08Speaker 12: as well.
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:27:09Speaker 10: So you're getting contributions, not only from your depth scoring,
- 1:27:12Speaker 10: but I think the players that are contributing, um, are
- 1:27:16Speaker 10: the future of this team.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: This is the core that, you know, we.
- 1:27:20Speaker 10: Look at the expansion core right now, which I think
- 1:27:23Speaker 10: you've got Larson, you've got Dunn, you've got Eberle and
- 1:27:27Speaker 10: McCann still part of that core. Obviously, Matty Beneers is
- 1:27:31Speaker 10: a draft pick, was an expansion.
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: Pick, but Whatever.
- 1:27:34Speaker 10: Now you're looking at Catton. You're looking at Wright. You're
- 1:27:37Speaker 10: looking at Odovinen. You're looking at Kako. You know, you
- 1:27:41Speaker 10: can throw Newman in that.
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: Role when he gets up here.
- 1:27:44Speaker 10: You're now looking at Krakencourt 2.0 having success. And I
- 1:27:49Speaker 10: think that is ultimately... what's paying off. And I've believed
- 1:27:55Speaker 10: in Jason Bottrell from day one. We're not going to
- 1:28:00Speaker 10: stifle the development of our young players. We're not going
- 1:28:05Speaker 10: to make a move just to make a move. If
- 1:28:08Speaker 10: it makes sense for this team, then great, we'll do it.
- 1:28:12Speaker 10: But I do think this team, where they are right now,
- 1:28:16Speaker 10: i would like to see them play a few more
- 1:28:19Speaker 10: tough teams going back to my rant earlier the kraken
- 1:28:22Speaker 10: we're gonna get a lot of you know what because
- 1:28:25Speaker 10: they've only played calgary they've only played detroit so yes
- 1:28:29Speaker 10: i think putting up another strong performance in the next
- 1:28:32Speaker 10: three games against minnesota against Toronto, against the Rangers who
- 1:28:38Speaker 10: were in second place, and then against Carolina out in Finland,
- 1:28:44Speaker 10: you've got the two Calgary games in there as well.
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: I think when this team comes back.
- 1:28:48Speaker 10: From Finland and you're going to have three, five, seven
- 1:28:54Speaker 10: more games, eight more games between now and Finland, You
- 1:28:58Speaker 10: come back from those eight games, Minnesota, Toronto, Calgary, Calgary, what, Rangers, Carolina, Carolina.
- 1:29:07Speaker 10: So you come back from those seven, eight games and
- 1:29:11Speaker 10: you're four and three. or you're 5-2 or 4-2-1, whatever,
- 1:29:18Speaker 10: then I think you're going to be like, all right,
- 1:29:20Speaker 10: this team is for real, and this team can hang
- 1:29:24Speaker 10: with anyone in the league. But I think where they
- 1:29:27Speaker 10: are right now, they've played the schedule that they were given.
- 1:29:31Speaker 10: They have done well against the schedule that they are giving,
- 1:29:34Speaker 10: and I think that this is going to be the
- 1:29:36Speaker 10: team that largely we're going to see for the remainder
- 1:29:40Speaker 10: of the season. I don't see any sharp drop-offs from
- 1:29:43Speaker 10: the way this team is playing now to later in
- 1:29:47Speaker 10: the year.
- 1:29:48Speaker 7: Everett, you had a great segue here as far as trades.
- 1:29:50Speaker 7: That's part of our next question from Mark Davis. He
- 1:29:53Speaker 7: says the Kraken seem to be winning games today. by
- 1:29:55Speaker 7: getting goals from the third and fourth lines, relying on
- 1:29:58Speaker 7: exceptional goaltending. Shooting percentage, goals saved above average are likely
- 1:30:03Speaker 7: to revert back here to the mean.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: It won't be easy here to sustain. He calls this
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: string of good luck. To become a.
- 1:30:09Speaker 7: Truly good team, the Kraken have to improve where they
- 1:30:12Speaker 7: are weakest, and that's defense. The Kraken have a logjam
- 1:30:15Speaker 7: of forwards in Coachella, looking for minutes, and some are
- 1:30:18Speaker 7: knocking on the NHL door. Can Jason Botterill put together
- 1:30:21Speaker 7: a trade package to get a shutdown top two pairing
- 1:30:24Speaker 7: D-man to help get this team into the playoffs? That
- 1:30:28Speaker 7: from Mark Davis on Twitter and X. Never say never
- 1:30:32Speaker 7: when it comes to a trade ship. And we've been
- 1:30:34Speaker 7: down the Simon Edmondson rabbit hole a while back. You
- 1:30:38Speaker 7: have out there right now Alexander Nikishin. I don't know
- 1:30:42Speaker 7: where Jason Botterill is with Carolina and that trade relationship.
- 1:30:46Speaker 7: Nashville is maybe shopping Brady Shea. Does he maybe make
- 1:30:50Speaker 7: that top four better potentially? But we've heard nothing from
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: Jason Botterill sniffing around that kind of deal. Top two
- 1:30:57Speaker 7: is going to be hard to come by here. Let's
- 1:30:59Speaker 7: just be clear on that. I like maybe where Edvinson fits.
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: His name is Chase Reed.
- 1:31:04Speaker 7: He's at Michigan State. And Chase Reed, you're going to.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: Have to be patient here on this.
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: He's on campus right now.
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:31:09Speaker 7: So I like where Edvinson fits in this equation, but
- 1:31:13Speaker 7: Detroit wants to sign him long-term.
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: That's been public.
- 1:31:17Speaker 7: So someone's got to go out if you get him
- 1:31:19Speaker 7: because you now got a logjam of Vince Dunn, Riker Evans,
- 1:31:22Speaker 7: and Ryan Lindgren here to deal with once he comes
- 1:31:25Speaker 7: back from injury. I still argue the top six has
- 1:31:29Speaker 7: to elevate their production. Defense matters because you can't drop Montour,
- 1:31:34Speaker 7: of course, out there 30 minutes a night. We saw
- 1:31:35Speaker 7: that about a couple of games ago. So getting Lindgren
- 1:31:38Speaker 7: back helps a little. Vili Odovinen going through the school
- 1:31:42Speaker 7: of hard knocks is going to be a process for him.
- 1:31:46Speaker 7: And Lane Lambert's got to shelter his minutes here. But
- 1:31:48Speaker 7: this is where they're at right now, where I mean,
- 1:31:50Speaker 7: a top two shutdown guy, it's going to take a
- 1:31:53Speaker 7: lot of searching, the right trade partner, and the right
- 1:31:56Speaker 7: place at the right time type of situation.
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I.
- 1:32:03Speaker 10: I don't know if I'm looking for D per se.
- 1:32:08Speaker 10: I think defensively, the defense has never really been an issue.
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: I mean, you can always improve.
- 1:32:15Speaker 10: But I wouldn't say the defensive core for the Kraken
- 1:32:19Speaker 10: are a problem, if you will. If given the choice
- 1:32:23Speaker 10: of upgrading my forward group or my defensive unit, I'd
- 1:32:26Speaker 10: still want to go forwards.
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: But again....
- 1:32:30Speaker 10: I like Simon Edvinson, but to get, you're going to
- 1:32:34Speaker 10: have to give. What are you willing to give? And
- 1:32:39Speaker 10: I think the way the Kraken are playing right now,
- 1:32:43Speaker 10: the players that other teams are going to want are
- 1:32:47Speaker 10: going to be players that you're not willing to give up.
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: And we've talked about it before.
- 1:32:53Speaker 10: A lot of any blockbuster trade is going to have
- 1:32:57Speaker 10: to center players or at least include some combination of Wright, Catton, Beneers.
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: O'Brien, Reed. You know what I mean? I think you
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: can throw 19, McCann in it.
- 1:33:18Speaker 10: You're going to have to give up a lot, or
- 1:33:22Speaker 10: you're going to have to give up a big important
- 1:33:24Speaker 10: piece in order to get a big important piece.
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: Are you willing to do that?
- 1:33:30Speaker 10: I don't know if I am for help on the
- 1:33:33Speaker 10: back end, just knowing that I think our defense, the
- 1:33:37Speaker 10: Kraken defense is fine.
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: I don't see a problem with it. Again, you're right.
- 1:33:41Speaker 10: You can't trot a Montour out there 30 minutes a night.
- 1:33:45Speaker 10: But when Lindgren does come back, that alleviates some pressure.
- 1:33:50Speaker 10: I think Otto Weinen has been playing very well as
- 1:33:52Speaker 10: he continues to mature in the NHL. Dee just take
- 1:33:56Speaker 10: a lot longer from what we've seen in Coachella Valley.
- 1:33:59Speaker 10: Nelson and Jugnoff, they have been playing well to start
- 1:34:03Speaker 10: the season. And then, of course, you got Chase Reed
- 1:34:05Speaker 10: at Michigan State. I think right now you're still looking
- 1:34:08Speaker 10: for a top player. six forward that, that for me
- 1:34:11Speaker 10: is where you want to improve. Um, I, again, I
- 1:34:14Speaker 10: like Edmondson, but I don't know if I'm willing to
- 1:34:17Speaker 10: pay the price of what Edmondson's going to cost, uh, the,
- 1:34:22Speaker 10: the Kraken to, to get.
- 1:34:24Speaker 12: You know, it's actually a good position to be in
- 1:34:26Speaker 12: where I think that, and I, and I've read this by, by,
- 1:34:31Speaker 12: by some of the talking heads out there that, uh,
- 1:34:34Speaker 12: the Kraken could use anybody, uh, in the lineup, goalie, defenseman, forward, anybody.
- 1:34:40Speaker 12: I kind of see that, if you agree with that,
- 1:34:43Speaker 12: I kind of see that as a positive, meaning you
- 1:34:45Speaker 12: can look at what's out there and say, who is
- 1:34:48Speaker 12: the best forward that that we could get here in Seattle?
- 1:34:52Speaker 12: Who's the best D-man we could get in Seattle? Who's
- 1:34:55Speaker 12: the best goalie we could bring into Seattle? And what's
- 1:34:58Speaker 12: it gonna cost to get that person? And then you
- 1:35:00Speaker 12: can look at all three of those deals and say, okay,
- 1:35:02Speaker 12: this is the best one for Seattle where Seattle has
- 1:35:06Speaker 12: to give up the least to get the best and
- 1:35:08Speaker 12: you pull the trigger on that. Seattle's not in a
- 1:35:11Speaker 12: situation where they have to go get a goaltender, New
- 1:35:14Speaker 12: York Rangers. They're not in a situation where they're not
- 1:35:18Speaker 12: getting any scoring.
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: It's happening up and down the lineup right now.
- 1:35:22Speaker 12: Yeah, a 1C would be great or a top winger
- 1:35:24Speaker 12: would be great, but you're getting depth of scoring. And
- 1:35:27Speaker 12: to your point, Everett, the blue line is still very solid.
- 1:35:30Speaker 12: You've got Chase Reed coming up. So, I think I
- 1:35:33Speaker 12: see it as a positive that Jason Botterill's got flexibility
- 1:35:37Speaker 12: to test the waters out there and see what the
- 1:35:40Speaker 12: best player he could get for the least amount to return.
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: And I'll say this, too, about the D. I love
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: Chase Reed.
- 1:35:48Speaker 10: He's going to be, you know, I've heard people compare
- 1:35:50Speaker 10: him to Seth.
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: Jones, Zach Wierenski, a diet Kale McCarr, if you will.
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: Bobby Orr.
- 1:35:57Speaker 10: Nick Lindstrom, just rattling off a few, you know.
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: Rob Blake, Paul Coffey.
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: Rob Blake, yeah, you know, just some of those guys.
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: Just a couple of players.
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: A couple of players.
- 1:36:10Speaker 10: But I will say, though, I think where maybe down
- 1:36:14Speaker 10: the road in your pipeline, I wonder if now that
- 1:36:19Speaker 10: you have a glut of forwards, the Kraken have always been–
- 1:36:22Speaker 10: forward heavy drafting team a forward heavy scouting team I
- 1:36:27Speaker 10: wonder now if you start to shift with Chase Reed
- 1:36:31Speaker 10: obviously Landon DuPont's names out there this summer I am
- 1:36:35Speaker 10: completely I was never on the lay down for Landon
- 1:36:38Speaker 10: train I I don't think any NHL team wants to tank.
- 1:36:42Speaker 10: No player in that room is going to be like, well,
- 1:36:44Speaker 10: if we suck this year, we're going to get Landon DuPont.
- 1:36:47Speaker 10: I guarantee you those guys don't give a you-know-what.
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: Early returns, that also might be a weaker draft class
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: this year, too.
- 1:36:54Speaker 4: Exactly, right?
- 1:36:55Speaker 10: So I don't buy into that. A lot of fans
- 1:36:58Speaker 10: are like, oh, tank. I love Devin Cooley's comment the
- 1:37:01Speaker 10: other day. He's been playing so well for the Calgary flames.
- 1:37:04Speaker 10: And he was like, I know team tank is going
- 1:37:07Speaker 10: to be in my DMS right now saying, stop winning
- 1:37:09Speaker 10: you idiot. Like players don't care about the draft. I
- 1:37:14Speaker 10: get paid right now to win games. I get paid
- 1:37:17Speaker 10: to do the best I can for my team now
- 1:37:20Speaker 10: and not down the road. But I do wonder if
- 1:37:23Speaker 10: that draft philosophy will switch now the next couple of seasons. Hey,
- 1:37:28Speaker 10: let's get a few more defensemen in the pipeline because
- 1:37:32Speaker 10: you've got Jugnoff, you've got Nelson, you've got Chase Reed.
- 1:37:35Speaker 10: I would assume all three of those would be in
- 1:37:39Speaker 10: the mix for a spot opening night next season.
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: Again, we'll see.
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: Never know.
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: We have 11 months.
- 1:37:47Speaker 10: To figure that out, but that's where I would want
- 1:37:49Speaker 10: to go defensively is the pipeline down the road, not
- 1:37:53Speaker 10: necessarily right now.
- 1:37:55Speaker 7: Let's get to our three stars before we finally wrap
- 1:37:57Speaker 7: this up. Man, we went deep on this show here
- 1:37:59Speaker 7: for today. I'll begin with my third star.
- 1:38:02Speaker 5: Sorry about that.
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: It's all good.
- 1:38:05Speaker 7: We start off with my third star, and that's Brandon Montour.
- 1:38:09Speaker 7: And it was pretty apparent just how much this defense
- 1:38:12Speaker 7: missed him back in the Florida game. And he had
- 1:38:14Speaker 7: a feel for him because he was looking forward to
- 1:38:17Speaker 7: playing in that game. It's a place where he won
- 1:38:19Speaker 7: two Stanley Cups. And unfortunately, things didn't work out with
- 1:38:22Speaker 7: his lower body injury he suffered back in Tampa Bay.
- 1:38:25Speaker 7: But comes right back, looks all right, 30 whopping minutes
- 1:38:29Speaker 7: plus away.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: Ice time to set a franchise record.
- 1:38:33Speaker 7: Scored a 5-on-3 goal in Brandon Montour on brand fashion
- 1:38:36Speaker 7: last night with a pure clapper from the point. And
- 1:38:40Speaker 7: he's had now three points here as well since his return.
- 1:38:44Speaker 7: I loved how the team rallied around him when.
- 1:38:48Speaker 7: He earned the celebratory helmet after the win over Detroit
- 1:38:52Speaker 7: because it was one year to the date where he
- 1:38:54Speaker 7: unfortunately lost his brother Cam. And you can still tell
- 1:38:57Speaker 7: that he was, he was trying to recover emotionally here
- 1:39:01Speaker 7: from that, but he put together a very inspired game.
- 1:39:05Speaker 7: One of our favorites in the dressing room to talk
- 1:39:07Speaker 7: with heart and soul kind of guy, the energy you
- 1:39:09Speaker 7: felt at Brandon Montour is my third star. My second
- 1:39:12Speaker 7: star is Berkeley Caton for this last week. He's your
- 1:39:16Speaker 7: leading scorer on this team. Very, very short sample sizes.
- 1:39:20Speaker 7: We say a lot here, but you can certainly understand
- 1:39:24Speaker 7: the elements of his game, which.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: Are certainly improving.
- 1:39:28Speaker 7: We got to this earlier, the play he made to
- 1:39:31Speaker 7: make a 2-1 last night to shake off Lawson Kraus.
- 1:39:36Speaker 7: My goodness, in the NBA, they call that an ankle
- 1:39:39Speaker 7: breaker or putting a guy on skates. He literally put
- 1:39:42Speaker 7: a guy on skates. And it just shows the heightened
- 1:39:45Speaker 7: IQ that Berkley Catton can play with. More and more,
- 1:39:49Speaker 7: he is making a difference. More and more, good things
- 1:39:52Speaker 7: are happening when he is on the ice. Berkley Catton
- 1:39:56Speaker 7: is my second star of the week. My first star,
- 1:39:58Speaker 7: it's obvious, Philip Grubauer. 4-0-1 now, last five games. Against Utah,
- 1:40:04Speaker 7: three goals, 36 shots. But again, was under duress, second period,
- 1:40:09Speaker 7: third period. Difference maker against Detroit. look calm, cool, and
- 1:40:13Speaker 7: composed as well in the shootout. How long you ride
- 1:40:16Speaker 7: this Grubauer train, we don't know. We broke it down
- 1:40:19Speaker 7: earlier here, but it's pretty clear cut that there's not
- 1:40:24Speaker 7: a lot of goals he is letting in that you
- 1:40:27Speaker 7: go back and think he should have had it. If
- 1:40:29Speaker 7: you're beating Grubauer right now, it is either on deflections
- 1:40:34Speaker 7: or via screens because everything he's seen from a clean level,
- 1:40:38Speaker 7: he is stopping everything with a high level of composure
- 1:40:43Speaker 7: and a high level of calmness as well. Very important
- 1:40:46Speaker 7: ingredients that you need here and a big reason why
- 1:40:49Speaker 7: the Kraken are off right now to this 7-3-1 start.
- 1:40:53Speaker 7: Philip Grubauer is my first star of the week.
- 1:40:57Speaker 12: Some similarity on my side, Mikey. My third star of
- 1:41:00Speaker 12: the week, Mackie Samuskevich, had the game-winning goal in the
- 1:41:04Speaker 12: Utah game, goal in the Detroit game. I've been saying, critically,
- 1:41:09Speaker 12: to be fair, I've been saying I've been looking for
- 1:41:11Speaker 12: more from Mackie Samuskevich. Miscavige I'm starting to see more
- 1:41:14Speaker 12: and I don't know if it's the right combination of
- 1:41:16Speaker 12: being on the Stevenson and McMahon line but with Sam
- 1:41:20Speaker 12: Miscavige on one wing and then McMahon on the other
- 1:41:23Speaker 12: look out every other team in the NHL you better
- 1:41:25Speaker 12: figure out how to skate backwards and skate backwards fast
- 1:41:28Speaker 12: because those two guys are coming My second star, like Mikey, Berkley.
- 1:41:32Speaker 5: Catton, four points in the last three games.
- 1:41:35Speaker 12: I'm not sure if he spent some time this summer
- 1:41:39Speaker 12: working with fashion shoots, but he's learned how to undress people.
- 1:41:46Speaker 12: He put Lawson Krauss on his back. with that Matty
- 1:41:51Speaker 12: Beneers goal. He's just learning how to play at the
- 1:41:55Speaker 12: NHL level, and it's exciting to see what he's starting
- 1:41:59Speaker 12: to produce.
- 1:42:00Speaker 5: And then my first star, Brandon Montour.
- 1:42:04Speaker 12: For all the same reasons you said, Mikey, a goal
- 1:42:07Speaker 12: and assist in the Detroit game, goal and assist in
- 1:42:09Speaker 12: the Utah game.
- 1:42:11Speaker 5: You know he wanted to play in that Florida game.
- 1:42:13Speaker 12: But again, we know these players as people just as
- 1:42:17Speaker 12: much as we know them as players. And Brandon Montour
- 1:42:21Speaker 12: is professional enough to know I'm not going to put
- 1:42:24Speaker 12: myself in a position in a game that I really
- 1:42:26Speaker 12: want to play in. to potentially hurt myself even more,
- 1:42:30Speaker 12: which would hurt this team even more down the road,
- 1:42:33Speaker 12: just because I want to play in this game. And
- 1:42:35Speaker 12: that was impressive enough to me. Add that on, he's
- 1:42:38Speaker 12: my first star of the week. Yeah, that's real leadership too, right?
- 1:42:41Speaker 12: I mean, a guy that wants to play, but he
- 1:42:43Speaker 12: understands that I'd rather miss one now than miss 21
- 1:42:48Speaker 12: down the road.
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: So, Mikey, you and I are pretty.
- 1:42:52Speaker 10: Much the same. I'm going to flip your second and
- 1:42:54Speaker 10: third star. I've got Katton as my third star for
- 1:42:58Speaker 10: all the reasons that you mentioned. You know, I think
- 1:43:02Speaker 10: that his confidence every single night, we're seeing.
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: Him do more and more.
- 1:43:07Speaker 10: That leads you to believe he's going to be that
- 1:43:09Speaker 10: superstar that so many people want to fault the Kraken
- 1:43:13Speaker 10: for not having. I've said so many times, you look
- 1:43:16Speaker 10: around the league constantly. The McDavids, the Crosbys, the McKinnons,
- 1:43:21Speaker 10: the Kucherovs, all the big stars, they're grown in-house. Rarely
- 1:43:25Speaker 10: are they traded for. And if they are traded for,
- 1:43:28Speaker 10: it turns the league on its ear for a.
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: Couple of years.
- 1:43:31Speaker 10: But I think, you know, Katten has got the makings
- 1:43:34Speaker 10: of that first in-house player. homegrown superstar, that offensive dynamo 80,
- 1:43:41Speaker 10: 90 point a year guy that you're looking for. You know,
- 1:43:46Speaker 10: he's got a four game or a three game assist
- 1:43:48Speaker 10: streak forces in that time.
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: I've said it last couple of weeks.
- 1:43:52Speaker 10: I think that Berkeley cat and Shane Wright together, I
- 1:43:56Speaker 10: give him 10 more games, and they are really going
- 1:43:59Speaker 10: to bust out in a big way. Montour, again, points
- 1:44:02Speaker 10: him back-to-back games. What he's meant to this team, and
- 1:44:05Speaker 10: you could tell by him missing the one game, he
- 1:44:08Speaker 10: comes back and puts the team on his back. A
- 1:44:10Speaker 10: couple of goals in that time. Again, a leader in
- 1:44:15Speaker 10: every sense of the word, on the ice, off the ice.
- 1:44:19Speaker 10: I know you're not supposed to let your personal feelings
- 1:44:22Speaker 10: get in the way of what you do, but Damn it.
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: He's just such a good person. Oh, I love that man.
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: Just on a personal level. I talked about.
- 1:44:30Speaker 10: How Bob Condor is such a sweetheart of a person,
- 1:44:33Speaker 10: Brandon Montour. He treats everybody in that room on the
- 1:44:37Speaker 10: staff as if he was your teammate, and that goes
- 1:44:40Speaker 10: into it. And then I'm going Grubauer. Some R-rated saves
- 1:44:44Speaker 10: from PZ31 as my number one star. He's 2-0-1 his
- 1:44:52Speaker 10: last three. He's allowed 10 goals in that time, so yeah,
- 1:44:55Speaker 10: your goal's against Grubauer. maybe a little higher than you
- 1:44:57Speaker 10: want it to be, but he's been making some saves
- 1:44:59Speaker 10: that would have ended up in the back of your net.
- 1:45:02Speaker 10: Goaltender's been your best penalty killer. Goaltender's been your last
- 1:45:05Speaker 10: line of defense. You know, you've had some defensive breakdowns,
- 1:45:08Speaker 10: but he is stuck in there and hung in there.
- 1:45:12Speaker 10: Four starts in the last five games for Seattle. I
- 1:45:15Speaker 10: would imagine he's going to get one of the next two,
- 1:45:18Speaker 10: either Minnesota or Toronto coming up here.
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: So Grubauer, my number one star for the week.
- 1:45:25Speaker 7: All right, that'll wrap it up here, boys. Appreciate this.
- 1:45:27Speaker 7: A little bit of a lighter schedule here coming up
- 1:45:29Speaker 7: until the next show. Four-game homestand will end next Wednesday.
- 1:45:33Speaker 7: The Kraken back home tomorrow against Minnesota, 7 o'clock at
- 1:45:37Speaker 7: Climate Pledge Arena. Then wrapping up the homestand with the
- 1:45:40Speaker 7: last game before Halloween on home ice against the Leafs
- 1:45:44Speaker 7: happening once more, 7 o'clock, right back at Climate Pledge Arena.
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: Once again, we're on air.
- 1:45:50Speaker 7: Half hour before puck drop with coverage across the Global
- 1:45:52Speaker 7: Credit Union Kraken Audio Network. Big thank you to Bob
- 1:45:55Speaker 7: Gondor for joining us. And for Everett and Al, I'm
- 1:45:59Speaker 7: Mike for Kraken Weekly.
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: See ya. Your home for the Kraken. Sports Radio 93.3
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: KJR FM.
