- 0:00All right, welcome to Episode 2. Episode 2.
- 0:05Man, this one's pretty cool. I'm super stoked about this
- 0:09episode. You know, it's 4th of July, So
- 0:12this is our 4th of July special. And we've got a really special
- 0:15guest coming on today. He's going to talk a little bit
- 0:18about his military experience and the life stories that he's
- 0:20got. But, you know, today we kind of
- 0:22just wanted to take a moment and shout out the people that in
- 0:25our, in our lives that have been very special to us, You know,
- 0:28thinking about Independence Day and, and what that means to, to
- 0:30us and those that have fought for us and, and really been the
- 0:34people that have, have have given us the freedom right to,
- 0:38to live the life that we live in.
- 0:40And to be honest with you, to do this right here, right now.
- 0:43You know, and, and you and I took some time just to compile
- 0:46some of the special people in our lives and, and really just
- 0:48put a slideshow together to, to show some love to those people
- 0:52and, and, and really celebrate their service.
- 0:55You know, you being one of those people have that same level, you
- 0:58know, of, of commitment. I shouldn't say commitment, but
- 1:01I didn't get a chance to do that or I shouldn't, I guess I
- 1:05shouldn't say didn't get a chance.
- 1:06I didn't do that, you know. So thank you, right, Shane, for
- 1:10your service and, and the things that you've done.
- 1:13You know, again, Marcus is going to come on and talk about his
- 1:16experience, but you look at the slides and the people that are
- 1:19on these slides and, and how important they are to to where
- 1:22we're at today. You know, really it's just it's
- 1:26a very special moment to be able to give, you know, show some
- 1:29love, give some love back to those that have given so much to
- 1:32give us these opportunities. Yeah, you know, yeah, I think
- 1:36joining the service is one of the most selfless acts that an
- 1:40American do, right. I mean, you're, you're literally
- 1:45just signing your life away for like 4 years or however long,
- 1:49you know, I know guys that are still in what from when I went
- 1:52it when when I was in and yeah, man, great experience.
- 1:59You know, just not just the people that like now, but also
- 2:04got to thank the people that way before us.
- 2:07You know, I mean, shoot, think about it being back in the the
- 2:13colonies and starting a war to get independence from British
- 2:20for or from the British, you know, meanwhile, they're they're
- 2:24at work. We're not.
- 2:26No, it's, it's just a very, very cool time, you know, to
- 2:31celebrate that and to celebrate, celebrate the, the, like you
- 2:35said, the, you know, just the giving of not only the four
- 2:38years, but, you know, or even some of them more.
- 2:41I mean, my friend Mike is 28 years in in the Air Force right
- 2:44now getting ready to retire. Yeah.
- 2:46But you know, you just think about the the sacrifice and the
- 2:49commitment that you guys make. Oh, 100.
- 2:51Percent to be away from your family and your friends and the
- 2:53things that you guys put your bodies through, just to be able
- 2:55to protect us so that we can do the things that we love to do.
- 2:58Yeah. A lot of physical and mental
- 3:00things that you know, because I, you know, I joined the Navy.
- 3:05I got to be on a ship, you know, I had a pillow, I had a mattress
- 3:09every day. I liked it, you know, But on on
- 3:13my ship, we had a lot of Marines and seeing them go, you know, go
- 3:20do whatever they had to go do, you know, they didn't have it as
- 3:23good as what? As what we did.
- 3:26Yeah. You know, So when, whenever it's
- 3:29like the 4th of July, Memorial, Veteran's Day, you know, I
- 3:35really think about those guys, you know, and you know, at the
- 3:38time they're not just guys are kids too, you know, going into
- 3:41war and seeing the shit that, you know, a typical American
- 3:46will never see in their life. Yeah, and we and those of us
- 3:50that don't have to see it, right.
- 3:51Appreciate the efforts. And and I think, you know, I'm
- 3:55really excited right now because, you know, we're getting
- 3:57ready to bring our guest on and he's got some amazing stories.
- 4:00We're going to talk about camaraderie and, you know, just
- 4:03the things that you guys went through and stuff like that.
- 4:05So without further ado, let's bring him in.
- 4:08Yeah, come on, Marcus, we're good.
- 4:09All right, Well, welcome to rad cast random ass dudes.
- 4:13We are here with Marcus. How do you pronounce your last
- 4:16name? It's called It's Bungard.
- 4:18Bungard. OK, Yeah, OK.
- 4:20It's German. Is it?
- 4:22Yeah, It's got to be friendly. So Marcus, what what, what is it
- 4:28that you want to be on this podcast for?
- 4:31Well, I just wanted to come hang out really and get to, you know,
- 4:34chat with you guys, talk about different things, you know, you
- 4:38know, it's the rad cast. We're going to talk about, you
- 4:41know, all kinds of different things that we, you know, think
- 4:45about in life. You know, we're going to talk a
- 4:46little bit about what I do and I would like to kind of get to
- 4:49know you guys too, you know, because this is your cast and I
- 4:52want to get to know where you guys got going on.
- 4:54Awesome, Awesome. Well, I really, I know me and
- 4:57Nate really appreciate you coming out here, You know,
- 4:59driving out here from Mesa. Yeah, right.
- 5:01How long? How long was that drive?
- 5:03It's about two hours. 2. Hours.
- 5:04Wow, we really appreciate it then.
- 5:06Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hopefully in the future, you
- 5:10know, if anybody wants to shoot us some donations to hand out
- 5:13some gas cards, I'm not opposed to that.
- 5:16No, not at all. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 5:21So. So actually I'm from Phoenix, AZ
- 5:24so I was born and raised here. What high school did you go to?
- 5:28I actually went to South Point High School in South Phoenix, so
- 5:30I didn't go to the one in Tucson the most everybody else.
- 5:34I didn't know that. Yeah.
- 5:35I don't even know where South Point is in Phoenix.
- 5:37It's in. It's down by baseline and
- 5:40Central Ave. Gotcha.
- 5:41Down South of there. Yeah.
- 5:43It was a little tiny school when I went there.
- 5:45It's blown up just a little bit. Yeah, You know, it's down there
- 5:49by Cesar Chavez in South Mountain.
- 5:51OK. All right, Cool.
- 5:53Cool. Where'd you go to high school?
- 5:54Peoria. Yeah.
- 5:56P Town Panthers. Yeah. 2005.
- 5:58What? We.
- 5:58We just my class just 2000 what? Old.
- 6:02Man, 2005, dude, I know. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 6:05We're going to have Gandalf over here.
- 6:07Dallas when he was, when he, when I graduated.
- 6:09Class at 97. Class at 97.
- 6:11I was like 7 years old. Bro I was born in the 70s.
- 6:15There you go. Were you?
- 6:1779. Oh yeah, barely.
- 6:19Yeah, it. Doesn't.
- 6:20Count it does. There's a 7 in front of it.
- 6:22There it is. Yeah, it counts.
- 6:27So this this podcast here and the reason why we we really
- 6:34wanted you on here is because this is going to be our this is
- 6:38our 4th of July podcast. You know, I'm a veteran, I know
- 6:42you're a veteran and we are very pro American here and we just
- 6:48want to give a veteran an opportunity to tell his story
- 6:52and this is your story. Okay, cool.
- 6:56Yeah, and really, First things first, I mean, I appreciate your
- 6:58service for both of you, right? I didn't serve, my grandfather
- 7:02served, and I've got a lot of family members that served.
- 7:04So I just wanted to thank you guys really for what you've
- 7:07done, you know, to really make sure that you know, the
- 7:10country's as safest can be possible, right?
- 7:13But also the the sacrifices that you guys made being away from
- 7:16family and friends and stuff like that for the period of time
- 7:18that you did. So I just, you know, I wanted to
- 7:20give you both a really heartfelt gratitude that, you know, I
- 7:22myself can speak for my family, that we appreciate that.
- 7:25Thank you, thank you, thank you, and we appreciate your family.
- 7:28You know, you know, the the military isn't just about one
- 7:32single person. The military is one of those
- 7:35things that shows us that it's not just about what's going on
- 7:40in your life. It's it's about taking care of
- 7:41everybody around you. And that's one of the things you
- 7:44learn, you know, the first things you learn.
- 7:47I could tell you a story about boot camp when I failed swim
- 7:50call because I failed to help one of my fellow Marines.
- 7:52You know this is the things that are embedded in you from the
- 7:55beginning when you go into the military to take care of your
- 7:59brother. Yep, that brotherhood, huh?
- 8:01Yep, and it doesn't matter who you're from.
- 8:03Your flesh, your blood, your ethnicity, it doesn't matter who
- 8:07you are if you're part of the same mission and we take care of
- 8:10each other. Beautifully said.
- 8:11That's that's funny that you say that because I always tell
- 8:14people that when I was in, I made really good friends with
- 8:20people that I would probably never have talked to in high
- 8:24school. Oh yeah, never.
- 8:25Oh, yeah. You know, and you like, you
- 8:28know, when you're in the same uniform and you, you know,
- 8:30you're not, you're there's, you're all the same and you get
- 8:35to know the actual person. You're like, damn, dude, like in
- 8:38high school, I would probably like not even look at you.
- 8:42Yep. You know, and I got really good
- 8:44buddies that I still have communications with right now
- 8:50that I probably wouldn't ever talk to in high school.
- 8:53Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 8:54There's definitely people. And then, you know, there's
- 8:56people that would talk to you that, you know, you never
- 8:59thought would ever talk to you. You know, there's definitely
- 9:01people that hung out with me that I would thought probably
- 9:03would call me an idiot when I was, you know, a regular person.
- 9:06Oh, yeah, it's cool. You know, you make friends of
- 9:08all kinds of places from all kinds of places from the world.
- 9:14One of my favorite people is Kim.
- 9:16He's like this freaking tall Kim freaking, you know, he the
- 9:20really, he wasn't any different from anybody else, just like I
- 9:23wasn't different from anybody else.
- 9:25The only different was the last name and the rank on your, your,
- 9:27your uniform. That was it.
- 9:29What do you think it what is it about the military that makes it
- 9:31that way? Like where do you guys get the
- 9:33Brotherhood from? Well, that starts in boot camp
- 9:35because you have to learn to work together.
- 9:37OK, especially in Marine Corps boot camp.
- 9:39If you don't learn to work together, you are going to fail
- 9:42every time. Yeah, if you if you decide to
- 9:44become a one one man Army. Independent, yeah.
- 9:50You know, that's funny because in boot camp they sent me a
- 9:52shirt because my little sister joined the army and it had Army
- 9:56of One on it and they would call me.
- 9:59But can we cuss on this? Yeah, of course they called me
- 10:02Bun Fuck. Army of one.
- 10:04That's what they used to call me.
- 10:06Gunner started Enriquez. He used to come around and call
- 10:09me Bun Fuck. What are you doing?
- 10:10Bun Fuck And then used to put core frames on my.
- 10:13Face, what is that? The the fancy shoes, the dress
- 10:16shoes we used to wear. Oh, OK.
- 10:18He used to put my core frames on my face and tell me he stands
- 10:20still. He's standing there with a
- 10:22fucking shoe on my face. So I was, I was on the boxer,
- 10:27right, LHD four, OK. And we had the 13th MEW on our
- 10:30ship. OK, I was on the 31st.
- 10:33Which one is that one? The one in Japan face out of
- 10:36Japan. OK, open all.
- 10:38The MEW yeah, OK. And talking to those Marines,
- 10:43right, Completely different boot camp than what I went through.
- 10:46Oh yeah, completely. Guys have no clue.
- 10:49Marines are just another fucking animal.
- 10:51Shane wore a Speedo and Oh yeah, you know.
- 10:54Stop it. You had fun.
- 10:57You had fun. We did.
- 10:58Yeah. We learned to have fun hurting
- 11:00each other. Yes.
- 11:01That's that's weird. Yeah.
- 11:02You know the thing about Marine Corps boot camp?
- 11:04You know, because I have a son now and Junior, he's five years
- 11:08old getting ready to start school and, and every time I see
- 11:10him like move around and act up, you know, like that flashback to
- 11:14Marine Corps boot camp. I think about how they literally
- 11:17reprogram says in the five year old boys who have fun beating
- 11:20each other up. Literally, we learn how to do
- 11:23stuff like MCMAP, which is Marine Corps martial arts
- 11:27program. And that's where we, you know,
- 11:28we learn how to beat each other up, stuff like that and take
- 11:31weapons from each other, live animals stuff, all that cool
- 11:34stuff. And we also have these cool
- 11:36training sessions where we do like segment rounds where we get
- 11:39to shoot each other with paintball guns really, you know?
- 11:41And it's like, yeah, that's. Like fun.
- 11:43I didn't. Even think of that, you know
- 11:44what I mean? Like we literally get turned
- 11:46back into kids with weapons, but we're responsible kids with
- 11:50weapons, at least most of us. You've got to pay bills, right?
- 11:53Yeah. I mean, you got a Bill A.
- 11:55Yeah, if you want to. Yeah, I guess so, if you.
- 11:57Want. To there's a lot of people out
- 12:00there not paying bills and they get they get that assistance
- 12:02stuff we've. All been there.
- 12:03Yeah, yeah, maybe. Maybe every few now and then.
- 12:07Yeah. Yeah, that's cool.
- 12:09How old were you when you went into the Marine Corps?
- 12:11So I was, I'm older in a sense because I was born in November.
- 12:16OK. So I was a year behind everybody
- 12:19in general. So when I went in the Marine
- 12:22Corps, I was actually like, I think I was 20 when I went in
- 12:27the Marine Corps. I had already spent a year in
- 12:29college playing baseball. So I walked on at GCU and made
- 12:35it to last cuts and then transferred to Rochester College
- 12:37with a recommendation from the GCU head coach and I played it
- 12:42with Rochester College in Michigan.
- 12:44For a year. So I did that and then I came
- 12:48back before I joined, so I was like 20 years old, 19.
- 12:53You you look back and you think that's old, but really US here
- 12:57now, that's still pretty damn young, but.
- 13:00What is it though, right when it when you come to like going into
- 13:03boot camp because you're probably 2 years older than most
- 13:07everybody at that point. I'm except for like people like
- 13:11because we had we had one squad. I can't remember what number it
- 13:16was, but I was India Company and I think I was 3201 India
- 13:22Company. I don't know why I remember that
- 13:24today, but we, we had one guy who was a Navy guy.
- 13:30He's like freaking 35 years old. For real.
- 13:33Dude transferred from Navy to Marines and he had to go through
- 13:38boot camp. So he had to start over and he
- 13:41didn't start over like from like Sergeant or something.
- 13:45No, he started over from the bottom.
- 13:46He had to earn his rank through boot camp.
- 13:50And you can like earn rank through boot camp.
- 13:52There's point systems and stuff like that and you can like all
- 13:56kinds of different things, you know, make Matt belt belting up
- 13:59and stuff like that because there is a belt system to it and
- 14:02guys who can perform, you know, they get pumped up or like I
- 14:07believe that. I don't know if they still do
- 14:09it. If you like our squad leader
- 14:10guide or if you are a guide, they call it.
- 14:14I'm sorry. You said guide.
- 14:16Guide, guide, yeah. So we have guides, guys who look
- 14:19over the whole platoon and then you have squad leaders who help
- 14:22him look over, you know squads usually most squads are like 5-6
- 14:28man deep. So if you are one of them, you
- 14:33usually graduate a rank up. You get an honorary rank like
- 14:37Lance Corporal. And if you go into the if you go
- 14:40into the service with Lance Corporal, you work your butt off
- 14:43in boot camp and, you know, do the work.
- 14:46Dude, the Sky's the limits. Yeah, for most guys, you know
- 14:49you can. You can become a Sergeant in two
- 14:51years and be living a good life. Yeah, well, why did you choose
- 14:54the Marines? But what was it about?
- 14:56Did you check other the other branches or?
- 15:01Well, IA very important man to me, very intelligent man who's
- 15:07no longer with us. My grandfather told me.
- 15:10What's his name? Ronald.
- 15:13Ronald Bungerton, he, he told me a long time ago, you know, we're
- 15:17not part of the, the, the bitch department.
- 15:19So there was no other choice, you know, it was Marines or not
- 15:22the yeah, couldn't do it. You know, even the Navy, you
- 15:26know, there's a lot of Navy guys would be like, oh, you're a
- 15:28Department of the Navy. And I'm like, yeah, we're the
- 15:31men's. Department.
- 15:33Yeah, we, yeah. Tip in the sphere.
- 15:35Yeah, eating crayons in the last.
- 15:36First and last out you. Know yeah, I've heard a lot of.
- 15:38That hey, yeah, yeah, hey. Crayons got a lot of carbs to
- 15:41it. That's good.
- 15:42That's good. I'm glad you know.
- 15:45Oh man, red's my favorite color Cherry.
- 15:47For sure, for sure. You gotta pop it sometime.
- 15:50Oh yeah, Oh yeah, you snap that thing off.
- 15:52Actually, you peel it off, though.
- 15:54The paper is the part too. That's awesome.
- 15:57That's awesome. So your grandfather was a big
- 16:00reason why you joined the Marines.
- 16:01Well, he was, you know, he's a big reason of a lot of things in
- 16:04my life. He, my dad wasn't really in my
- 16:08life 100%. He was in and out of my life
- 16:10regularly. But my grandfather was, you
- 16:12know, one of those people that I, I learned a lot from.
- 16:16I used to go out on the truck with him.
- 16:18He used to be a truck driver, truck driver, like most of his
- 16:20life that I knew him and he would, we would go out on the
- 16:23truck everywhere. Man, I've been to almost every
- 16:25state in the United States except like Alaska probably.
- 16:29Yeah, I think I've only not been to Alaska just because I got to
- 16:32ride around the truck with him state to state over the summers,
- 16:35over time and stuff like that. Was your grandfather alive when
- 16:42you went in? Still?
- 16:43Yes. OK.
- 16:44Yeah, yes. Is he still with us today?
- 16:47No, no, he actually passed away a couple of years ago, last
- 16:50month, actually. Sorry to.
- 16:53Hear that, man? Thank you.
- 16:55It, you know, it's, it's not really about, you know, in the
- 17:00end, you know, you got to think about what you, what you're
- 17:03leaving behind sometimes, you know, and he left a lot of good
- 17:07things behind. You know, one of my favorite
- 17:10things that we used to do is watch wrestling WWE, you know,
- 17:13I've watched WWEWWFWCW, you know, all that ECW, we used to
- 17:19watch all that stuff together. So that was fun, you know, those
- 17:24are memories I get to keep, you know, and I get to pass down to
- 17:27my kids because my kids like wrestling now.
- 17:29You know, every now and then I'll come walking past the room.
- 17:32Here comes my son off the top row.
- 17:34I'm like, no, that's how I broke my arm.
- 17:38So stop. That's awesome, man.
- 17:41Oh yeah, dude. What was your job in the
- 17:43Marines? So I was a radio operator.
- 17:45OK, so I I operated and worked on radios for most of the time.
- 17:50I also was a rifle instructor, which was pretty cool.
- 17:54I got to go to rifle school there in 29 Palms and then learn
- 17:59how to shoot rifles. I was an expert, got rifle
- 18:02expert, pistol expert, and then, you know, stayed around and did
- 18:06coaching and stuff like that. And you were eight years, right?
- 18:08So four years active, four years inactive.
- 18:10Yep, Yep. I signed up for the inactive
- 18:12reserves when I got out just because I if I don't know, I
- 18:16don't know if I was done. So I waited.
- 18:18I waited it out, waited out with a couple of the things, a couple
- 18:23of the meetings, one of the couple of the we have to meet up
- 18:28and do a little exercise and stuff like that.
- 18:30I did a few of those. And then about three years, I
- 18:33got the e-mail, you know, hey, are you going to stay in
- 18:35tonight? And I'm like, no, I think I'm
- 18:38done. Yeah.
- 18:39So I decided to get out. But in a heartbeat I, you know,
- 18:43I drop and protect what I had to protect if I had to.
- 18:45So that's just forever in my blood now.
- 18:48Did you deploy? No, I didn't get every chance to
- 18:50get deployed. I put in for like a couple.
- 18:52I got denied for a few, overselected for a few.
- 18:56Just happens. Yeah, yeah, that's about it.
- 19:00And then I went on multiple C deployments with the 31st MU.
- 19:05We went all around. We did things like going to Guam
- 19:09and doing exercises there. Philippines, Malaysia.
- 19:13We were in Malaysia for a little bit, you know, kind of cool
- 19:15stuff. So you guys did a Westpac?
- 19:18Yeah, yeah. And then we also, we also were
- 19:21part of the 31st move when I got first got with them.
- 19:24We are part of support with the tsunami that knocked out the
- 19:28power plant. Oh yeah.
- 19:30Japan, Yeah. So I had just gotten on island
- 19:33when that tsunami hit. Damn, what?
- 19:35Was that experience like? Yeah.
- 19:37Have you seen a wall of water? No.
- 19:40Just a wall of dust. Dude that's think about a wall
- 19:43of dust and then think about like you can drown in that.
- 19:47Like that was like a wall of water.
- 19:48Dude like that's. Crazy I see videos.
- 19:51Oh, dude, it's crazy. It was the some of the craziest
- 19:53things I've ever seen. I've seen cars get flipped on
- 19:55their side and slid down the street.
- 19:59Rooms get flooded, buildings get flooded.
- 20:01I've seen trees get knocked. You know, you see trees get
- 20:05knocked down to the places. You know, there was times when,
- 20:08because when I first got on island, we were part of, you
- 20:11know, the Bravo unit of. The MU or like the 7th com, the
- 20:19headquarters baton, we were in charge of keeping like a radio
- 20:22connection, keeping a radio connection for the whole base,
- 20:27you know, stuff like that. So we would have to sit up and
- 20:30stay awake and be on these radios.
- 20:32And I don't know, have you seen, you know, what an OE is, right?
- 20:35No. So an OE antenna is this big
- 20:38long standing antenna that goes up.
- 20:40It's kind of like this much wide at the base and then it gets
- 20:44skinnier at the top and it's got a little rounded half sphere
- 20:47cone on. It's got sticks sticking out of
- 20:50it. Looks stupid.
- 20:50Don't tell a Navy guy that. Dude, yeah, I tell you why Navy
- 20:55guy might love that dude. It looks, it looks like a
- 20:59dandelion, you know? Yeah.
- 21:01Is that what that is? Not a dandelion?
- 21:03The one where you blow it in it. Oh yeah, yeah, you definitely
- 21:06should have been in the Navy. You.
- 21:09No, no, no, no, no, no, no. So.
- 21:13So it literally looks like a flower almost.
- 21:15Yeah. So we're on radio watch and I'm
- 21:18sitting there and I'm listening for radio calls and stuff like
- 21:21that. And all of a sudden the radio
- 21:23just kind of does 100 mile freaking take off towards the
- 21:27window because the OE gets sucked up in the freaking storm
- 21:32and tossed down the parking lot and the radio's attached to
- 21:35that. So we've got a radio that's
- 21:37flying almost out the window. It is there, you know, there's
- 21:41storms and stuff like that, you know, being on ship too.
- 21:46Yeah. They.
- 21:46Oh, yeah. So, you know, some people go
- 21:48like, oh, I don't, I don't go out on the water in the boat.
- 21:50I was like, yeah, no, thank you. I I, you know they, you know,
- 21:55they're different. Yeah, it's.
- 21:56Different, It's really different.
- 21:58And people, some people don't realize that, like the waves
- 22:01that you see closer to shore, those are 15, 20 times bigger
- 22:08way out there, out to sea. And the animals, The fish.
- 22:12Yeah, the sharks. Like we've been waves.
- 22:14Come on deck, dude. Oh dude, we've been.
- 22:16Rocked. Dude, Yeah, that's crazy.
- 22:18We're talking like straight bow, up, down, up, down, freaking.
- 22:23We've been rocked before. We've been left out in the
- 22:26middle of the water with no power.
- 22:28Oh Jesus dude. Yeah, we broke that one.
- 22:30Damn, yuck, talking about eating peanut butter and Jelly
- 22:33sandwiches for the next three days.
- 22:36I'll do that was all there was because if they open up the
- 22:38freezer, the food would go back and we'd run out of food.
- 22:41I tell you what, man, when I was on deployment, every time the
- 22:45Marines cook anything, I was excited.
- 22:48Yeah, because they didn't give a shit.
- 22:51We were like, what do we got? Let's get, hey, let's get some
- 22:53chicken, let's get some greens, let's put some spices on there.
- 22:56But then when the Navy started cooking, it's like, hold on,
- 23:00hold on. We have to dial it back a little
- 23:02bit, you know? Oh, yeah.
- 23:03Hell no, man. Like feed me good right now,
- 23:06right now. You know I'll suffer later.
- 23:09You want to go to Anitas for some fajitas.
- 23:11No. Oh, man, that sounds like
- 23:14trouble. Yeah.
- 23:16I mean, the Marine Corps cooks are a lot different from the
- 23:18Navy cooks. Yeah.
- 23:19Oh, yeah. And on ship it's a little bit
- 23:21different too, because it's based on supply.
- 23:23So what did what did the chef order?
- 23:26Yeah, yeah. Did he?
- 23:27Was he an asshole or did he? Not long have you been out.
- 23:30Yeah. Oh, yes.
- 23:31Oh, dude, yeah. If if you're out there for
- 23:33extended amount of time, you know, food starts to run out.
- 23:37It's it's not like you're at home at the grocery store.
- 23:41You can go down the street. When when we run out of food, we
- 23:43run out of food. You're eating MRE's.
- 23:45And I think that's part that like the average person doesn't
- 23:49think about. No, when you look at the
- 23:51military and you guys are out, right?
- 23:52It's like, you know, here we're all blessed with that.
- 23:55We can run to the grocery store, run out for fast food during the
- 23:58day. I mean, Jesus, we get bored at
- 24:00home and we're like, oh, let's go to Delgado's for some shrimp
- 24:02tacos, right? You don't have that luxury.
- 24:04You're eating what you got. And, and sometimes it's very,
- 24:07very little. Yeah.
- 24:08And I mean, you know, there are there are places around the
- 24:12world where we have bases and stuff like that that have
- 24:14certain amenities that can accommodate, but they only
- 24:18accommodate so far. Sure.
- 24:20You know, it only goes so far and then, you know, because you
- 24:24have to worry about safety, health, safety like that, who's
- 24:28bringing it on the base and stuff like that.
- 24:30They've, you know, they got guards and stuff for all that.
- 24:33But when we're like out and we're doing like, we'll just so
- 24:38we'll say movements or we'll call them operations, we're out
- 24:42doing these things and they hand out food.
- 24:43That's that's what you got big dog, you run out of food.
- 24:48That's not you, man. You eat too fast or too much.
- 24:50Where's the hot sauce? At yeah, exactly.
- 24:53You better start chewing that little white gum inside that MRE
- 24:56and save some room, bro, because yeah, it's it's no good, but you
- 25:00know MRE's anyways, dude they're they're so filly.
- 25:04I'll tell you what, man, I've never They are.
- 25:06They are. They'll fill you up if you run
- 25:09out of food. With MRE, you're you're, you're
- 25:11an overweight. You're overweight, big dog.
- 25:15What? So what years did you serve?
- 25:182 SO 2010 July to 2014 July OK, this is my active service.
- 25:25Nice. So you did your full four years?
- 25:27Yep, I did have a situation where I was shipped off to
- 25:31Hawaii because I did have a few Tvis and some training incidents
- 25:35from boot camp and stuff like that.
- 25:38And those who don't know what that is, it's a traumatic brain
- 25:39injury. So they made me go do some
- 25:43testing in Hawaii, sent me to that Army base in Hawaii to do
- 25:48all that testing. I went to the hospital, do all
- 25:52the testing. And at the end the ladies are
- 25:53like, do you want to like get out or do you want to finish
- 25:55your career? And I'm thinking in my hands,
- 25:57like I wasn't raised as no, no, bitch, I want to finish my
- 26:01career. You know, part of me thinks, you
- 26:04know, maybe I should have just said I'm ready to get the hell
- 26:05out, you know, because it seems like she was ready to send me
- 26:08home with 100%, you know, No, Yeah.
- 26:11I, I, I had to overcome some of those things.
- 26:15I had some memory issues for some reason, but it was it was
- 26:21probably some of the best times in my life.
- 26:23I mean, there are sometimes. I probably went overboard.
- 26:28I got a little drunker than I should have been.
- 26:29That's. Everybody that's.
- 26:30Probably the military. Reason I don't drink anymore.
- 26:34Hey, there you go. Yeah.
- 26:35It doesn't. It doesn't matter where you come
- 26:37from. Everybody's probably had that.
- 26:39Oh yeah, And, you know, I got Irish, you know, in my blood.
- 26:42So I did. I drink like crazy.
- 26:46Yeah, it used to be bad. So are you one of the Irish that
- 26:48doesn't get hungover? Exactly.
- 26:51Oh, these Damn. Why is it about?
- 26:53What is it about that? So I got a buddy that's the same
- 26:56way. Like he can drink till 3:00 AM
- 26:58and he's up at six, no hangover. No, yeah, I used to.
- 27:01I used to be bad. You know, alcohol is not the
- 27:03answer at all at any point. I used to be really bad.
- 27:07I used to drink like I used to take like a shot of Grey Goose,
- 27:13throw it in my red Solo cup and crack a freaking orange soda and
- 27:18drink it before PT. Damn.
- 27:21Almost every day. Well, that's a Little Mix of him
- 27:24being an Irish and a Marine. Yeah.
- 27:26That's what I say. That's it.
- 27:28That's exactly what I mean by Marines.
- 27:30The Marines are just a different human being, too.
- 27:32Yeah, like that, that that gets your body warmed up.
- 27:34You're ready to freaking go before you hit the deck.
- 27:36Yeah. Feeder feeder ready in motion.
- 27:39You're ready to go that. Fucking desert dogs.
- 27:40Man, put some hair on your chest.
- 27:42Man. I you know, and there are a lot
- 27:45of good, there are a lot of good Marines out there.
- 27:47I'm not saying drinking's a bad thing for Marines.
- 27:52It is a depressant kind of thing.
- 27:55Like it helps with depression and stuff like that, which is
- 27:57something that is going to be, you know, unknowing to those who
- 28:04are joining, wake up because there will be depression
- 28:10imprints on you when you join the military, no matter what
- 28:13service you're on. Because no matter who you are as
- 28:16a human being, unless you have gone through probably some of
- 28:19the even when you've gone through some of the roughest
- 28:21times in the world or, you know, grew up in the hardest parts of
- 28:25town, you're going to have separation anxiety situations.
- 28:31You're, you're going to, you know, you're going to face
- 28:33situations where you're feeling like, what am I doing this for?
- 28:36There are going to be times when you hear the news or you see
- 28:40somebody do something stupid, you're like, what?
- 28:42Where the heck am I protecting these people?
- 28:44You know, people and you know, people are going to question
- 28:46themselves and stuff like that. And that's just natural human
- 28:50nature. So when when you when you put a
- 28:55human in that situation, we are, I don't want to call it
- 28:59programming. I don't want to call it
- 29:01programming because you're not really programmed because I
- 29:03mean, you can come back and have a regular life.
- 29:06There are guys that can handle it more or you know, that have a
- 29:10better mental makeup for him. And then there are some people
- 29:14that went through too much and you know, they just, they don't
- 29:17know how to put one in one, one and one together to make 2.
- 29:20And you know, you know, it's good for them to have help.
- 29:24You know, we did have an issue where we guys were having a hard
- 29:27time getting help. But now it's gotten better and
- 29:30more vets are getting help. The words getting out about
- 29:34mental awareness and stuff like that.
- 29:36And you know, we're getting more guys that are from the
- 29:41generation I, you know, they all call it like Generation Z, the
- 29:45all those different generations, you know, just the generation of
- 29:47guys who were raised by fathers who taught you to suck it the
- 29:51hell up, right, right. To get it done.
- 29:55Now there's a time and place for that.
- 29:58And there has to be a time and base for that, especially for
- 30:00men. But you know when you're we're
- 30:05told that all the time and then you go and you do military
- 30:09service and it's just about, you know, get after it, get after
- 30:13it, Hurry up and wait. Get to work.
- 30:14Let's go. Wake up early.
- 30:16Let's go. We gotta go.
- 30:17Shoot, we gotta do that. Are you?
- 30:18Sure you want to go to medical Exactly are.
- 30:19You sure? Exactly.
- 30:20Do you really? Do you?
- 30:22Really need to yeah 'cause we have to do this right.
- 30:24Now you know, I blew out my ankle on a four mile hike.
- 30:28I blew it out like 2 miles in and I finished the hike and then
- 30:32when I got back, I had to be helped down the hill in, in
- 30:36Japan to the area where they help with, they check on your,
- 30:40they do all this medical, medical stuff and things like
- 30:43that. And they ended up pulling and
- 30:46straining and tearing one of the ligaments in my ankle and on
- 30:49crutches for like 3-3 years or three months, three months,
- 30:52three years, three months. And it happened to be during one
- 30:56of the rain seasons out there. God damn, dude.
- 30:59That was, I'll tell you what, that's miserable right there.
- 31:01I'm on crutches trying to keep up with everybody and there's
- 31:04just rain everywhere. Does water everybody?
- 31:07But you think about the mental toughness there, right?
- 31:10Like the average person is not going to just continue the extra
- 31:132 miles. No, I got to finish right.
- 31:15We finish. Right.
- 31:16That goes back to like we were talking about having the dog
- 31:18inside you, right? Is like you just have to have
- 31:20the desire to finish no matter what.
- 31:22Yeah, it wasn't. It wasn't that I'm going to
- 31:25quit. You were going to finish it no
- 31:27matter what. Oh yeah, there's no option to
- 31:28quit, right? Yeah, especially for Marines in
- 31:30particular. There is no other option.
- 31:32You either accomplish the duty that's been a task to you or you
- 31:36die. Try.
- 31:36Yeah, sure. That's that's it.
- 31:38And you know, there's a lot of Marines out there that live that
- 31:41life still today, but they have it in different ways of what
- 31:44they do, like I do bull riding, you know.
- 31:47So I've been doing that again now for the last three years.
- 31:50And I played, I played a little bit of semi pro baseball and and
- 31:56I'll tell you what, there is not a single point in time when I
- 31:59get in the box or when I get in the chute with the bull, then
- 32:02I'm thinking, oh man, I'm going to get hurt.
- 32:04You know, it's not about that. It's about, Oh yeah, we're going
- 32:07to have some fun. You know, I I don't know what it
- 32:11is, you know, but in particular for bull riding for me, yeah.
- 32:16I just love the feeling of the animal.
- 32:20It, you know, you just right there and you can feel him feel
- 32:25you like he can, he can he's twitching in there.
- 32:28He's moving around and you can feel that he can tell you're
- 32:32there and it's like you can absorb their energy and it's
- 32:37like it's like this beautiful dance between man and beast.
- 32:40It really is. You know, there's a lot of
- 32:42people out there that look down on bull riding and they they see
- 32:46it as a dangerous sport and don't get me wrong, it is
- 32:48dangerous. It's very dangerous.
- 32:49It is very dangerous, but it is very dangerous for me to go down
- 32:53the street here, hit the right and try to turn left back on and
- 32:56go home because it's some semi truck driver or me.
- 33:00I if I just not paying attention and I get smoked.
- 33:04Yeah, you know, life, life is fragile.
- 33:07Life is dangerous. Yeah, it's fragile.
- 33:09It's and technically it's fragile.
- 33:11It's the body is an Organism of survival and that's something
- 33:14that, you know, people have to come to agreements with that
- 33:18your body's going to survive. You know, whether you're putting
- 33:20water or you're putting Mountain Dew in your body, your body's
- 33:24going to try to find a way to survive.
- 33:26I mean, it's going to pull things that needs sugars,
- 33:29whatever it needs from what you you intake, and it's going to
- 33:32give you what you need to keep going in the situation that
- 33:35you're in. And for me, you know, I don't
- 33:38know if it's just a competitive edge or anything like that.
- 33:41I don't know what it is, but man do I just love.
- 33:45I love that thrill. I don't know, 8 seconds dude.
- 33:48Well, so how does that all tie in right?
- 33:508 seconds we're talking. 10 seconds we ride past the whistle
- 33:54and we tip off on there. You go so you know talking about
- 33:58that, though, like you think about growing up playing ball
- 34:01right. So you play obviously play
- 34:03baseball through high school into college, yes, going to the
- 34:06Marines. You buck bulls as a kid.
- 34:08Now you're getting back into it like how does what is the I
- 34:11guess what is the consistency between the three that that you
- 34:17can connect where you everybody talks about the competitive
- 34:20edge, right? It's not about being competitive
- 34:23when you get on a bolt for the first time.
- 34:26I mean, let's be honest, everybody, no matter who it is,
- 34:29you're scared out of your life right before you jump on a bull
- 34:32that's 2000 lbs of pure evil. Oh yeah.
- 34:35That you're jumping on. Oh yeah.
- 34:37So how did like, how does how does what you learned growing up
- 34:41and then going into the military and doing all these other things
- 34:43create that mindset to get you to still get on a bull to this
- 34:47day, knowing that you broke your wrist and you've had all this
- 34:50damage to your body? Like where does that come from?
- 34:52You know, you know, about halfway through there I had an
- 34:54answer for you. I'm going to change it.
- 34:57I'm going to talk about a word that everybody has in their
- 35:01life. They wear it up here most of the
- 35:03time and sometimes they wear it in here.
- 35:05It's called fear. You know, one of the most
- 35:09consistent things that I remember throughout my entire
- 35:12life as a kid is there was always something to fear in
- 35:15life. But the Lord didn't build us
- 35:18with fear. He didn't build us to take on
- 35:20fear and, and be scared of it. He built us to take on fear and
- 35:25attack it. So I don't know if it's just
- 35:30because of traumatic events have happened in my life over time
- 35:33and a continuation, you know, we'll just say we'll, we'll tie
- 35:37it all together. Because no matter where I was in
- 35:41the stages of my life, there was something for me to fear.
- 35:45You know, growing up as a kid, I was a smaller kid.
- 35:48I was the smaller kid. I was literally I mean I'm only
- 35:51like 5-7 now about 7. Most women wouldn't date me.
- 35:55Thank you, my beautiful wife, for marrying me.
- 35:58What's her name? Shout out.
- 35:59Jackie. There you go, Jackie.
- 36:01Thank you. You know, it's a good thing she
- 36:03loves dogs. She took this double dog in off
- 36:07the street. So I'm I'm so blessed that she
- 36:10loves dogs. Well, she's she's she's Mexican,
- 36:13right? Yeah.
- 36:13She's Mexican, so. Have you got her to say Poppy
- 36:16yet? Call you Poppy.
- 36:17I'm not gonna say that. OK, yeah, I'm still trying to
- 36:20get my wife to call me Poppy. Oh yeah, she won't.
- 36:23I'll teach you the trick. Alright.
- 36:26Yep, you guys use the, you gotta use the.
- 36:29My man, you. Gotta use the water bottle.
- 36:31You say? Spanish answers lonely.
- 36:36Oh man. But dude, like no matter what
- 36:39level of life I was from when I was a little kid, everybody was
- 36:42bigger than me. In baseball, everybody's bigger
- 36:44than me. And in baseball, I played
- 36:46catcher. Wow.
- 36:48I was a catcher. I was a small catcher, but I was
- 36:50quick. I was fast.
- 36:51I wasn't afraid of blocking, you know, I wasn't afraid of
- 36:56standing in front of guys coming to home play because when I
- 36:58started playing baseball, guys were still running over
- 36:59catchers. Now it's illegal now.
- 37:02Now they're a little bit softer. I know that a.
- 37:04Little bit softer. Yeah, Yeah, there's all.
- 37:06Kinds of not to like take a shot at any baseball players out
- 37:10there that are watching or maybe watching in the future, you
- 37:12know, but they have taken back some of the.
- 37:20The physical, Yeah, the physical side.
- 37:23Of the sport and have, you know, kind of made it a little bit
- 37:28safer, which is good because it does bring on longevity for the
- 37:31athlete, for the organization. And they're not wasting money on
- 37:35guys because, you know, they are paying these guys a lot of money
- 37:38to be out there. But, you know, from that to high
- 37:43school, I grew up in, I basically grew up in South
- 37:46Phoenix. I was one of three white kids in
- 37:50my school up until when my brother got into high school,
- 37:52right before I got out of high school.
- 37:53There's four of us. So I grew up in a, in a
- 37:57community that was technically, you know, beaten by the system,
- 38:06you know, and as a young red headed white kid, you know, in
- 38:12that kind of environment, I wasn't always accepted.
- 38:15So you learn how to brush things off over time, learn how to
- 38:19protect myself, learn how to fight, things like that.
- 38:22Took boxing classes and stuff like that was pretty cool, you
- 38:27know, things like that. And you know, those things I, I
- 38:31thought I had to fear. I didn't fear.
- 38:33And when I didn't fear those things, I've seen more success
- 38:37in my life than I've ever seen before, especially with like
- 38:41bull riding, like when I have when I have kids come to me and
- 38:44they talk about bull riding, I tell you, you can't be afraid of
- 38:47it. He's he's just an animal.
- 38:50And the misconception about bull riding is that they, you know,
- 38:55they tie a rope around his junk and make him mad.
- 38:57No, the the rope goes, the flank goes around his hips and it just
- 39:03tightens the hips up, which causes him the reaction to any
- 39:07animal like that, if they're going to is the kick.
- 39:11Yeah, you know what I mean? Like there's plenty of times you
- 39:14can go out and watch low level riding and practice nights, you
- 39:17know, at the Roadrunner, shout out to the Roadrunner, you know,
- 39:20Cave Creek, you know, and in Cave Creek you have Buffalo Chip
- 39:24and then you have. On there.
- 39:25Do you ride a lot at the Roadrunner?
- 39:27I go to the Roadrunner and I go to Apache Junction out at the
- 39:31hitching post too. OK, OK, Yep.
- 39:33So, I mean, there's a lot of easier bulls out there that
- 39:38don't kick like that, and that's OK if you know for beginners to
- 39:42get on and get used to just having the animal between the
- 39:45legs. Just to feel that.
- 39:47Exactly. And, and the understanding that
- 39:50most people have is that when the bull bucks you off, he's
- 39:52looking to hurt you. If you watch, if you, if you
- 39:56actually watch and spend time watching the different levels of
- 40:00bulls that are out there, the higher level the bull.
- 40:04The most likely that Bull does not want anything to do with you
- 40:07once you hit the ground. Yeah, once you hit the ground,
- 40:09he's spinning because he's picking up, you know,
- 40:12bullfighter. So bullfighter, bullfighter,
- 40:14bullfighter. He's.
- 40:15And then he's like, oh, he's he's not there anymore.
- 40:17Yeah. Let me get out of here.
- 40:19You just happened to the wrong place, wrong time.
- 40:20There's a that that's how most riders get hurt once they hit
- 40:24the ground. You just happened to be in the
- 40:26wrong place. We'll just say like I had a
- 40:29situation where I got I got slammed and the next jump, his
- 40:33back clothes landed on my back. You know, that's just happened.
- 40:36That's just when you fall sometimes near the animal and
- 40:40he's still going. You're sometimes you're going to
- 40:42get hit. I mean some of them.
- 40:44And when you fall, you fall in front of them and he sees you,
- 40:48he's going to, he's going to dig a little bit.
- 40:50But I mean, you know, if you ever watch like Bullfight and if
- 40:55you hit the ground, most of the time they run right over top of
- 40:57you. Yeah.
- 40:59So things like that. And then people, you know, we,
- 41:03we have safety equipment we wear.
- 41:05Some guys don't even like but even like the guys who go hat
- 41:10down. If people don't know what hat
- 41:11down is where they just wear a hat.
- 41:13Oh gotcha. If they don't, wear a.
- 41:15Helmet. Yeah, they don't wear a helmet.
- 41:16So guys who go hat down, there's also hats out there that have
- 41:20like a little bit of a shielding in there and it has like a strap
- 41:25on it, like you would have like a construction hat.
- 41:28So it's holding the hat on their head.
- 41:32So even with that, I mean like dude, it's you can't fear things
- 41:37in life in general. It doesn't matter what you do.
- 41:40So the last episode that me and Nate did, well, our first
- 41:44episode we were talking about him, he went over a horse,
- 41:47right? And just that mental part of
- 41:52when you're in a really dangerous situation and how you
- 41:55could think real fast is that, is that something that like you
- 41:59do as a bull rider? Like, you know, I'm sure you
- 42:02could feel when you're having a good ride, but once you know
- 42:05that you're coming off, what is that feeling like?
- 42:09What are you like? Are you thinking?
- 42:11Are you just kind of reacting or what?
- 42:14So I guess that would depend on coming off in the situation.
- 42:19So sometimes you just you don't know.
- 42:24Yeah, like you're. Feeling good.
- 42:25You're feeling good, you're feeling good.
- 42:27And then your feet are in the air and you're looking at the
- 42:29dirt and you're on. You're done.
- 42:31You're already on the dirt. There's times, you know, I, I
- 42:34rode a bull and I got hell. I don't know if you know what a
- 42:36helicopter is. You know what a helicopter.
- 42:38You know how the blade spins in a circle?
- 42:40Well, we call it being helicoptered when a bull bucks
- 42:43you and spins you. I've been helicoptered and
- 42:46tossed like 1010 feet. Freaking hooked me with this.
- 42:50I got pulled down his horn and hooked me across the jaw and I
- 42:53went but across the arena. But like, you know, when I'm in
- 43:00a position where I think I'm out of position, my first thought is
- 43:04how long can I hold on? I'm not thinking what.
- 43:08Do you mean how long can I hold? Them How long can I hold this
- 43:10position? Oh, gotcha.
- 43:11I'm good here. Can I hold this long enough to
- 43:16get the A? Yeah.
- 43:17Can I stay here? But that's the position that
- 43:19probably you don't want to be. In, you don't.
- 43:21As a rider, most of the time you don't, but that's that's.
- 43:23What? What is the position you want to
- 43:25be in? What is a perfect bull riding
- 43:28position? So a perfect bull riding
- 43:32position depends on the writer. I would.
- 43:35Imagine. It's different.
- 43:36It's different from writer to writer because there are some
- 43:39writers that they put their weight on their inner thighs and
- 43:43their knees and they sit more of an angle over the bull.
- 43:48And there are other riders that are taller, let's say like a
- 43:51Brady Fielder that have to sit up taller and they have to bring
- 43:55their knees up into the bowl. Because if because their legs
- 43:58are so long, they can't sink their legs down around the bowl
- 44:02because if they do, their heels will click most of the time.
- 44:05And if their heels are clicking, then they're not grabbing onto
- 44:08nothing. So they have nothing to hold on
- 44:09to. So if you're ever seeing Brady
- 44:11Fielder ride, that's actually, you know, watch, watch how I
- 44:15ride. He sits up more and he's got
- 44:17more of an upright position. Same with, I think it's Bob.
- 44:21I can't remember his last name, but yeah, there's guys like
- 44:26that. Mason Taylor's the same way.
- 44:29And then you have people like the Frost family, Josh Frost and
- 44:33them they, they ride more, they have more of a, of an over the
- 44:38shoulder in a good position setting where the weight is on
- 44:42the inner thighs and not on the knees.
- 44:44The pressure is on the knees and you're just driving over the
- 44:47front end. There's Gary Lefue, there's his
- 44:52way of riding, which is a little bit different from other riders.
- 44:56And then again, going back to height, I, I could, I could
- 45:00literally either ride a bull Brazilian style, which a lot of
- 45:04Brazilian riders, they like to like pull themselves into their
- 45:08rope. So like some people will do
- 45:10this. I do this in a sense where they
- 45:13pull themselves into the rope and they just hold themselves
- 45:16there. Yeah.
- 45:17So there is no real, there is no real drive.
- 45:21On over. The top over the top with their
- 45:23legs or anything like that, that's they're just covering the
- 45:26shoulders and holding in position.
- 45:30You know, you get blown back, recover the shoulders blown
- 45:33back. You know, there's there's so
- 45:35many different ways that you can write technically.
- 45:39So that's a broad question to ask a writer because it's going
- 45:43to depend on the writer. But they had more room, you
- 45:46know, or we could do a video next time I show you guys.
- 45:48But it just depends on what's more comfortable for the rider
- 45:54once they get into the position of riding live bulls.
- 45:57What is your? What is your position?
- 46:00I like I I'm kind of like a combination because so I, I when
- 46:04I got back into riding, I went out and I hung out with Hunter
- 46:07Kelly out in San Tan. Great rider.
- 46:10His dad is Frank Machine Gun Kelly, 40 years plus some
- 46:13buckles guys with amazing people, great family.
- 46:17I went out there and worked with him and, you know, we did some
- 46:20things where my legs were a little bit further down, you
- 46:23know, around just a little bit, I believe.
- 46:26And I was, you know, squeezing, you know, and you want to
- 46:29squeeze up either way. So you want your knees into him
- 46:32and you want to squeeze with your thighs so your butt comes
- 46:34up off. You want to be able to naturally
- 46:36sit up over him like that. So I, I worked on some movements
- 46:40with him and I also, you know, learned some things from other
- 46:44guys and, you know, I also kind of combine like what Josh Frost
- 46:49does, you know, and what they do with putting the pressure on the
- 46:53inner thighs because I like to be right over the shoulders the
- 46:57whole time. I don't mind being back a little
- 47:01bit because I do have the ability to get back.
- 47:06Or you can learn how to get back because there's ways like if you
- 47:09get blown back or you're behind, they some they call a back door
- 47:14move where you kind of lay back in that direction and kind of
- 47:17roll yourself up over the bull. It's, you know, but you know,
- 47:22those are higher level moves for guys.
- 47:24But for me, it's just, it's just about recovering center on the
- 47:29shoulders and then staying, keeping my back straight.
- 47:33I'm partially over the front end and just trying to square up
- 47:38with him every time. Yeah.
- 47:41What about you? Are you gonna ride?
- 47:43No. Well, it's funny, like I wish I
- 47:46could. So I had my shoulder replaced
- 47:49about a year and a half ago and my doctor was like don't do it.
- 47:51We'll ride. We use the other arm.
- 47:53It's not that, it's if I land on it is the problem.
- 47:56Yeah. We'll put you on.
- 47:58We'll bring you and put you on, honey.
- 48:00I just I just. I would totally jump on.
- 48:02Trust me I would. I mean, he saw me go over the
- 48:04front of the horse at a dead Sprint.
- 48:05So it's not like I'm worried about hitting the ground.
- 48:09But like, when you asked about, like, specific writing
- 48:11positions, I think about your baseball career.
- 48:13Yeah, Right. And that's like asking a hitter,
- 48:15like, what's the right batting stance?
- 48:18It literally is different for all of us.
- 48:21And then and then you have the the progression of the sports.
- 48:26So back in when the PBR was created in back in 1994 when
- 48:31it's established, I believe it's 1994 when it's established.
- 48:36Back then the bulls bucked different than they do nowadays.
- 48:41Nowadays they've got more. The bread.
- 48:43Yeah, yeah, bread and and they were bred back then and people
- 48:47and again, going back to what people think about like how
- 48:50bulls are took care of, I'll tell you what, there are bulls
- 48:52that are better taken care of than me.
- 48:54Oh, for. Sure, I promise you, 100.
- 48:56Percent. There are there are millions of
- 48:59bulls out there that are taking way better care than any single
- 49:03person on this earth, even people who think they're kings
- 49:06and other countries and the president like these bulls are
- 49:10loved. They're treated like family.
- 49:13They're fed really well. They're put on workout programs.
- 49:18And again, like you said, they're bred to do this.
- 49:20They're not. And it's not like they're bred
- 49:23like they're forced to do it. No, they, they come from a
- 49:26certain offspring. So we'll say Bushwhacker has
- 49:30bulls that you know, our offsprings from him, Rupa, all
- 49:34the little Yellow Jacket. There's a bunch of bulls out
- 49:40there. Red Rock, House Bunch, Red Rock.
- 49:41I don't know if you guys remember Red Rock, Lane Frost.
- 49:44You know, there's a bunch of bulls that are from the past
- 49:49that back in that time were outstanding bulls, but nowadays
- 49:54would be average bulls. Right.
- 49:56It's just a pedigree, right? It's a pedigree.
- 49:58Exactly. So the pedigree of the bowl has
- 50:02changed over time. And that's the same thing with
- 50:05other sports, like in baseball. And that's why I wanted to say,
- 50:09you know, no, no hurt, no hard feelings to baseball players out
- 50:12there or football players or basketball players about how the
- 50:15rules have changed over time from when I was a young kid.
- 50:19So now it's just that the progression of the sport, the
- 50:22athletes move in such a higher pace.
- 50:24Yeah, dude, I tried. I tried to go back after the
- 50:28Marine Corps. I tried.
- 50:29I went and I played play with the Black Sox for a whole month
- 50:32out in Florida with Joe Torre and the Black Sox out there.
- 50:36They're a traveling baseball team that help young athletes,
- 50:39baseball players in particular, who are, who want a shot and are
- 50:42willing to pay that money and spend that time.
- 50:44You know, I went out there and I got actually, I almost got a
- 50:46shot with the Oakland A's and the Miami doll, not the
- 50:49Dolphins, but the Marlins. Yeah, I almost got a shot.
- 50:52Damn. I almost got a shot with both of
- 50:54them when I was out there. And I was only out there for two
- 50:56weeks. And he kept trying to tell me.
- 50:59And I, you know, I wish I had the ability, but at the time I
- 51:02had a one, had my first child at the time.
- 51:05And I wish I would have had more money on the side for that, but
- 51:09he was like, I just need you to stay out here for two more
- 51:11weeks. And I wish I could have, if I
- 51:13could have, you know, who knows where I would have been?
- 51:16But he those people wanted to see me play more.
- 51:19They like me. They like the way I hit and
- 51:22stuff like that. And The thing is, I went to I
- 51:24went to optimal power performance.
- 51:26I'm going to throw it out there. AJ Arroyo, he he changed my
- 51:31swing. You know, I was a push swinger.
- 51:33And and nowadays, if you're a push swinger in baseball and
- 51:36you're a kid and you're hearing this right now, stop pushing
- 51:40because pushing is only going to slow you down.
- 51:42You got to snap, you got to learn the HPHLP swing, high
- 51:46level performance swing. You got to snap that barrel, get
- 51:48it in the zone early. If you want to hit home runs
- 51:50like Aaron Judge and them Mike Trout and all those guys.
- 51:54Darren, you know, Dan Slow not it's bull riding, freaking the
- 51:59first baseman. Bellinger, you know, I don't
- 52:01know where he's not in. Don't, don't look at me.
- 52:04I don't know nothing about baseball.
- 52:07Do you know anything about any other sport?
- 52:09Oh yeah, What sport? Oh yeah, tennis.
- 52:13He's a big pickleball. Guy, there we go.
- 52:15Yeah, I know. But yeah.
- 52:18That's cool, man, didn't you? You also did a little bit of
- 52:22cage fighting. Cage fighting.
- 52:23Yeah, MMA. Yeah, I did MMA while I was in
- 52:26the Marine Corps for about 3-4 years.
- 52:29When I got out, I fought for a little bit.
- 52:32I actually first started training like live MMA under a
- 52:38staff Sergeant of mine. And, you know, he gave me the
- 52:42nickname Little Spartan. I was.
- 52:46I've always been a tough son of a gun, you know, always can take
- 52:51a hit, you know, most of the time.
- 52:54You know, there's definitely times where I've been rocked in
- 52:56life, but I've never truly been knocked out in the cage, which
- 53:00is nice. And and he gave me that nickname
- 53:05because even if you were bigger than me, dude, I brought you.
- 53:07I brought the fight to you. And that's just who I always
- 53:10have been. And that's another reason, you
- 53:12know, Marine Corps and even, like, bull riding, like, I'll
- 53:17bring the fight to you. I'm not afraid to bring the
- 53:20fight because why be afraid? Yeah.
- 53:22Why? So that when I get to be 60
- 53:24years old, I'm looking back, I could have done that if I wish,
- 53:28I wish I did that. I'm not going to be wishing.
- 53:31I'm not going to make a. Wish man, I'm not.
- 53:32Going to make, you know, not to cut them out, but or anything
- 53:36talk down. But I'm not a make a wish kid.
- 53:38You know, I'm going to, I'm going to do it.
- 53:41You know, even even though like if I have like issues with, you
- 53:44know, getting out of bed sometimes, you know, I'd rather
- 53:48beat myself up living the life I want to live.
- 53:52And instead of living life everybody else wants to do it.
- 53:54Because you know, you're going to hate yourself.
- 53:56I promise you, you're going to, you're going to look back and
- 53:59you're going to be like, what was I thinking, right?
- 54:02Well, you can't take safety with you, right?
- 54:04Like you want to, you can take. Nobody's going to tell stories.
- 54:07If they got nothing, they even lived.
- 54:09Exactly. Yeah, if you're somebody that
- 54:11wants to be remembered, you know you're going to have to do
- 54:15something that's rememberable. No, it's going to have to make.
- 54:19You just got to get out there and do.
- 54:20It and you know you. Can't sit there and watch TV and
- 54:22watch other people do it, right, Exactly right.
- 54:24Like you can't watch YouTube videos of bull riders and be
- 54:26like, man, I want to do that or I wish I could have done that.
- 54:31It's like you're the type that just fuck it, Like I want to go
- 54:34do that. I'm going to go do it.
- 54:35Yeah, and you should just do it like, like that's the thing, you
- 54:38know. You know, it's kind of a
- 54:41mainstream saying, but just like Nike says, just do it.
- 54:44Just do it because really you don't know.
- 54:47In the end, you don't know. You know, you have the past,
- 54:50present and future. The past is the past.
- 54:52You can't change it in the future.
- 54:54You don't know what's there. All you have really is the
- 54:56present, and you take advantage of that.
- 55:00I kind of have that mentality of wanting to start this this
- 55:03podcast because, you know, a little bit of me was like, you
- 55:08know, I can't, I can't do that shit.
- 55:10You know, I can't talk to people.
- 55:12I mean, I can, right? But it's like, well, what if
- 55:15people think I'm dumb? Well fuck them.
- 55:18Fuck, you know, I just said fuck them and just hey.
- 55:20I know, let's. Just do them.
- 55:20Let's just do it. You know, you got to get over
- 55:23that. Yeah.
- 55:23You know you joined the military.
- 55:26That's true. So you got to remember there's a
- 55:27little bit of stupid in there that's.
- 55:29True. Oh, I have a lot of stupid in
- 55:32there. I got a lot of stupid.
- 55:33There's, you know, to want to put your life on the line and
- 55:37basically sign a piece of paperwork that says you have no
- 55:41more rights. You know, you can't really.
- 55:44You're voting. Don't think about it.
- 55:46You're done. You're done.
- 55:47You're not voting. Here's four years.
- 55:49Here's four years of you're going to do exactly what we say
- 55:51or we're going to throw you in prison.
- 55:53So if you're willing to, because they don't, they don't hold you
- 55:57at gunpoint. No, and they don't stand over
- 56:00you. That's all volunteer.
- 56:01It's all. Volunteer and most of the time
- 56:03when they hand you, I know when they did mine, they hand you the
- 56:06paperwork. They leave the room.
- 56:08Sometimes they leave the room where they, they make up like
- 56:11the guttering Sergeant and the Lieutenant they've had like AI
- 56:14think I remember they, they said that they would get a drink of
- 56:16water real quick. They left me in the room to read
- 56:18the paperwork, you know, to make the choice myself.
- 56:21And when you go into depths, which is the program that they
- 56:25do where they evaluate, I'm not going to say too much, but they
- 56:29evaluate the person coming in for both.
- 56:34Physical, Physical. Yeah, well, they also
- 56:36interrogate you. I got a story.
- 56:38For that 10, they interrogate you like though, though, they'll
- 56:42ask you questions and they'll they'll make sure that you're
- 56:45willing to stand with the answers that you've provided on
- 56:49paper. And I'll be honest, I was in
- 56:52that room and that Sergeant made me feel like I was guilty.
- 56:54And I knew it wasn't like I knew I didn't do anything.
- 56:58I didn't do anything. Would you ever recommend the
- 57:03Marines to your son? Yes, yes.
- 57:06But I, I, I, I partially, I'm impartial, partially, you know,
- 57:14kind of like on both sides of the fence with I believe we
- 57:18should have some sort of program where at least, you know,
- 57:24fucking I like this. But, you know, every person who
- 57:27graduates high school should have some sort of monthly
- 57:30training of some sort of survival, like military survival
- 57:34training. Like there should be something
- 57:38that better prepares these people to pay attention to life.
- 57:41Yeah. Oh yeah, that's a fact.
- 57:42You know what I mean? Because like the there's a total
- 57:47page flip when it comes to guys who went to the military and
- 57:51they come back the responsibility, most of the most
- 57:54guys, the responsibility they have built into them, the
- 57:57dedication to get shit done and stuff like that.
- 58:00Those are all things these people can learn, you know, in a
- 58:02summer program and stuff too. That doesn't have to be so
- 58:05intense, you know? Yeah, True.
- 58:07But yeah, Yeah, my wife might hate that.
- 58:10But if he wanted to, yes. If he wanted to, yeah.
- 58:15I, you know, I if, he said. Dad, I want to join the
- 58:18military. Would you say Marines or would
- 58:20you say just go look at your options?
- 58:25I mean, really, there's nothing better than the Marines.
- 58:27We do it all land, air and sea like we, we do it all.
- 58:31We, we fight air, land and sea. You can be a pilot in the
- 58:33Marines. You can be a mechanic in the
- 58:36Marines. You can be a truck driver in the
- 58:37Marines. You can be a Rifleman,
- 58:39mortarman. You can be a machine gunner.
- 58:42You can, you can fly freaking Kiwi helicopters.
- 58:47You can fly Cobra helicopters. You can do whatever.
- 58:51You can literally do whatever. You can be a cook in the Marine
- 58:55Corps. Like if you wanted to be a chef,
- 58:57like you want to go look, if there's a kid out there that
- 59:00wants to be a chef, like this is what you want to do and you want
- 59:03to get away and you want to see the world at the same time and
- 59:06you don't want to pay for school.
- 59:08Go to the Navy. Go to the Marine Corps.
- 59:11Go to the Marine Corps. Do not go to the go to the Navy.
- 59:14Do not go to the Navy. Go to the Marine Corps.
- 59:16Be a chef. A lot of those guys get put on
- 59:19different units and stuff like that after their first couple
- 59:22years and they get to go and cook in different places.
- 59:27I knew I met AI, met a chef in 29 Palms that got to go and cook
- 59:32for the president. Oh wow.
- 59:34Yeah, very. Cool.
- 59:35So like he was part of the the embassy program or the embassy
- 59:43platoon I guess. I don't know what they call it
- 59:45nowadays. I don't remember.
- 59:47But he was part of the embassy there in DC and he got to cook
- 59:51for the president, stuff like that somehow.
- 59:52So like, there's there's so many opportunities in the Marines.
- 59:57I'm not saying it's for everybody.
- 59:59Yeah, I promise you it's not for everybody because you first have
- 1:00:02to make it through boot camp. Yeah.
- 1:00:04And it is no joke. Yeah, I know, I know that.
- 1:00:07That it is. The Marine?
- 1:00:08So were you in Pendleton then? I was where you at?
- 1:00:11No, we were. It's not Pendleton, It's MCRD,
- 1:00:15the Marine Corps is it or in? California, yes.
- 1:00:18OK. So because don't they have two?
- 1:00:21Yeah, we have two, yes. And if you're on the east side
- 1:00:25of the midline of the United States, I can't remember what
- 1:00:28it's called. If it's like half of Texas or
- 1:00:31the other side of Texas, on is you go.
- 1:00:34If you're East Coast Marine, you go over to Parris Island.
- 1:00:37If you're a West Coast Marine, you go to MCRD.
- 1:00:39OK, now they call MCRD Hollywood Marines because there used to be
- 1:00:45a thing. I don't know if they still do
- 1:00:47it. It didn't freaking happen for me
- 1:00:49that they would take the Marines to a baseball game.
- 1:00:53I didn't go to no fucking baseball.
- 1:00:54Game. Yeah, me neither.
- 1:00:55I got fucking thrashed. I didn't go.
- 1:00:59You probably went but you forgot.
- 1:01:01Yeah, I do PTSD, dude. OK, so Marines baseball, yes.
- 1:01:08Cage fighting, yes. Bull riding currently current.
- 1:01:12Current bull riding. Yep, recovering.
- 1:01:14Recovering. Yeah, blew out my knee.
- 1:01:17OK, that, that's. When was the last time you rode?
- 1:01:22I rode in the 8 seconds rodeo. Because I Remember Me and you
- 1:01:26were talking about you were going to come out here to the Rs
- 1:01:29rodeo. Yeah, so I was riding in the Rs
- 1:01:31rodeo circuits, all three of them.
- 1:01:33OK. And then in January on a bull
- 1:01:36called No Res, he comes out and goes away from my hand and my
- 1:01:41knee gives out. I hit the I sublux my knee and
- 1:01:45then when I hit the ground, it went back into place.
- 1:01:47So I I had problems with holding on with this leg for like a
- 1:01:53whole two months, but I had to finish the series.
- 1:01:55I ended up winning the Corona Ranch series.
- 1:01:58So I won the Corona Ranch series.
- 1:02:01Thank you, man, Thank you. But then good old Bubba Night.
- 1:02:05He beat me in the bigger series. I mean you should have seen that
- 1:02:09buckle. That kid guy thing was
- 1:02:12beautiful. Was it like the Dale Brisby
- 1:02:13Buckle or? No, it wasn't that big, but it
- 1:02:15was shiny. Yeah.
- 1:02:16Oh, it was shiny, Yeah. If you were in the, you know, if
- 1:02:19you go to Desert Diamonds or Country Bar and he was standing
- 1:02:22there, you'd see it across the dance floor shining off,
- 1:02:24claiming out there. Oh yeah, dude.
- 1:02:26That would have been a nice one to wear.
- 1:02:27What do you? What is your job now?
- 1:02:29What is your 9? Do you work 9 to 5?
- 1:02:32Like what are you doing now? So I was doing sports training,
- 1:02:36OK. I was working with high school
- 1:02:38athletes and some college athletes, stuff like that for a
- 1:02:40little while, but now I'm going to be doing some just regular
- 1:02:44general maintenance work for Greenfield Junior High in Mesa.
- 1:02:49I'm just going to be hanging out, you know, creating some
- 1:02:53money, revenue, looking to buy my own Bulls and get my own land
- 1:02:58and stuff. Like, there you go.
- 1:02:59So I can have my own practice pen because, you know, it gets
- 1:03:03expensive. Yeah, it's not cheap.
- 1:03:05It's not cheap to ride. Well, just the feed that to feed
- 1:03:09them, right? I mean, these are big animals.
- 1:03:10Yeah. I mean some, some of them it's
- 1:03:12cost you 5000 a month just to feed them, just to feed them.
- 1:03:17So you did bring the shirt? Yes, that's my, that's my
- 1:03:20strength condition company Wayne's muscle.
- 1:03:25Yes, Sir. Up in there.
- 1:03:26Yes, Sir. Wayne's muscle.
- 1:03:29So I just started this, just launched this.
- 1:03:32I've got a few clients right now.
- 1:03:34You know, I, I got a broad range.
- 1:03:37I've been doing personal training, technically sports
- 1:03:39based training, military based training since I was like 2021.
- 1:03:45So it's been about 15 years, 1415 years that I've been doing
- 1:03:49training for people on a consistent basis.
- 1:03:51I've worked in multiple different gyms and stuff like
- 1:03:54that. Help people with like hip
- 1:03:55replacements, knee replacements, all kinds of different things.
- 1:03:58I helped train a lady to walk the Grand Canyon.
- 1:04:01She was like 78. Damn, wow.
- 1:04:03She walked the Grand Canyon. And I've helped some athletes,
- 1:04:07you know, overcome fears and stuff like that.
- 1:04:08You know, the typical coach thing, the thing that makes you
- 1:04:11proud to be part of what you do and things like that.
- 1:04:14So I've had a great experience with that.
- 1:04:16So I decided to just kind of like open it up on the side.
- 1:04:19Right now it's, you know, small business type, but I want to
- 1:04:22open my own private facility here in the next coming years,
- 1:04:27you know, and just have it open for athletes and regular people,
- 1:04:31stuff like that. So if there was anybody that was
- 1:04:33listening today and they wanted to be part of that or have you
- 1:04:37trained them, how would they go about getting in contact with
- 1:04:39you? So you can either reach out to
- 1:04:41me on Instagram or you know, you can reach out to me on Facebook.
- 1:04:44Wayne's muscle is, is my knockout slogan for it.
- 1:04:49It's Wayne's under score muscle, I believe for the tag.
- 1:04:53Or you can reach out to me via, I believe I have my a post on my
- 1:05:00Facebook and Instagram where it has like my phone number, stuff
- 1:05:03like that, e-mail and stuff like that.
- 1:05:06But really, you know, right now with the way that we're, what
- 1:05:11I'm trying to get this to work out is you, you really have to
- 1:05:15be willing and dedicated to do it because you're going to have
- 1:05:18to come to me. Yeah, yeah, you're going to have
- 1:05:20to come to my facility and work in my facility because I used to
- 1:05:26do the travel stuff and that's, that can be a lot, a lot of
- 1:05:29extra stuff. So I used to, I used to actually
- 1:05:31do travel training and I do do some travel training for like
- 1:05:37even like for like bull riders. But you know, they have to pay
- 1:05:40extra fees for travelling for me to travel out there.
- 1:05:44But I do like I, I build barrels too.
- 1:05:47So part of Wayne's muscles is I build stationary barrels for
- 1:05:50bull riders. OK, so I bring out, I'll bring
- 1:05:54out one of my barrels that I have built and you know, we work
- 1:05:57on the barrel and stuff like that and things like that.
- 1:05:59So I, I kind of got this really broad base of education.
- 1:06:05I'm working on finishing my masters in sports, exercise
- 1:06:07science and human development. I've got my bachelor's in
- 1:06:10exercise science from GCU. So, you know, it's kind of
- 1:06:15always just been the love of my life really, if you want to put
- 1:06:20it that way. If there's one thing I could do
- 1:06:22for the rest of my life, I would do for the rest of my life is
- 1:06:25help people get better. Yeah.
- 1:06:27Stay physical fit because most people don't understand that if
- 1:06:30you just stay consistent, it doesn't matter how much weight
- 1:06:33you move, doesn't matter how fast you move it, as long as you
- 1:06:37stay consistent, you will create muscle growth.
- 1:06:40And on top of that, you'd be absolutely astonished among how
- 1:06:45much better you feel if you work out 30 minutes a day or so every
- 1:06:50single day. What?
- 1:06:53You hearing this I. Blocked it out.
- 1:06:55Yeah, I know, I know he blocked it out a long time ago.
- 1:06:58But it's like you got to stay active.
- 1:07:01Body in motion tends to stay in motion.
- 1:07:03Yeah. Amen.
- 1:07:04I know I work outside. I'm a lineman.
- 1:07:08It's not enough. Oh, it's enough.
- 1:07:09We can get into this, but it's not enough.
- 1:07:11It's No, it's not. I didn't get these forearms from
- 1:07:14just. You know, you might have good
- 1:07:16forearms, but you like black bicep strength, so it's sometime
- 1:07:20it's if you're. I got that.
- 1:07:22If I got strain, I got that old mass strength.
- 1:07:24Right now he's. Got the Navy strength, yeah.
- 1:07:26Which very good at squeezing. That's right.
- 1:07:29Stop. Yeah.
- 1:07:30Yeah. So my son, he rides, right.
- 1:07:34OK. I told you all that there's
- 1:07:37actually like a group of dads that I've been talking to out
- 1:07:40here that been going to Dylan's and doing the Rs rodeo and stuff
- 1:07:45and we've all kind of talked and it's like there's nothing on the
- 1:07:49West side that. For these kids.
- 1:07:51For these kids to practice, to get the hang of it, because I
- 1:07:57want to see my son succeed. He he freaking loves this shit.
- 1:08:01He is always, always on YouTube. He throws on his own little bull
- 1:08:05riding things with the little bull riding toys.
- 1:08:08You know, like he's like he's like dialed into this stuff,
- 1:08:11right. But we just on on on the West
- 1:08:14side. We don't have anything over
- 1:08:16here. No, not really.
- 1:08:17And I've and I've talked to other dads and they said that
- 1:08:20there's plenty of stuff on the East Side, but there's nothing
- 1:08:23over here. Yeah.
- 1:08:24And, and The thing is also there are some like smaller ranchers
- 1:08:29on the West side, but like most of those guys over here are like
- 1:08:33Rs rodeo guys who their bulls buck in, you know, certain areas
- 1:08:38and they only buck for for the season.
- 1:08:41Yeah, well, they're also using them to train their kids.
- 1:08:44Exactly, exactly. They're not.
- 1:08:47And So what we need to do then is we need to get a way to
- 1:08:51create an area to train the riders out here.
- 1:08:54You know, we need to find, you know, and when you think about
- 1:08:59it, it can be it can be challenging just because of you
- 1:09:03have to have a place where not only you can buck bulls that you
- 1:09:09can also work, you know, stationary work with the kid and
- 1:09:12stuff like that. It's got you gotta have, you
- 1:09:15gotta have it, you gotta have the space.
- 1:09:17So that already has his mind going.
- 1:09:19He's the side of all this stuff. Good.
- 1:09:22So if you guys need help with your business, don't be afraid
- 1:09:25to ask Nate. Don't be afraid.
- 1:09:27Don't be afraid to ask for help. Exactly.
- 1:09:30You know that that's another thing most people can't be
- 1:09:32afraid to do. You got to ask for help, but I
- 1:09:34think. You need it, you know, and
- 1:09:35you're talking about that, right?
- 1:09:36And it's just a missed opportunity in the West Valley
- 1:09:39for, for that. And, and we talk a lot about the
- 1:09:41next generation of bull riders. And if they're not given the
- 1:09:44opportunities to learn and to develop their skills, eventually
- 1:09:48they'll just lose the passion for it.
- 1:09:50And once the passions gone, now what, right?
- 1:09:53Where does the next the next, you know, changing in the guard
- 1:09:56come from? You think about you're not that
- 1:09:58old, you know what I mean? And then you look at Drake.
- 1:10:00We talk about him all the time, right?
- 1:10:02Is that he's got this passion for bucking bulls and watches
- 1:10:05and, and and learns via, you know, YouTube.
- 1:10:09But it would be great to have an opportunity to create a space
- 1:10:11for these kids to come out and say, listen, I really want to
- 1:10:14learn this, right? So I don't know.
- 1:10:16I was hitting coach for a while. That was an easy thing for me to
- 1:10:18do is find a space. And I just go out and work with
- 1:10:20kids that were passionate about. I knew it was Zeke, right?
- 1:10:22Yeah. But we need to figure out a way
- 1:10:25to create a space for somebody like yourself to to do something
- 1:10:30that can create the next generation of bull rider.
- 1:10:33Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, so.
- 1:10:35That may be something that we all talk about off air, but I
- 1:10:37think it's it's something that that there's opportunities
- 1:10:40there. I mean, you know, we talked to
- 1:10:42Trev about it all the time and it would be great to have
- 1:10:44different voices for different for, for different levels.
- 1:10:48But you think about just there, there's just so much missed
- 1:10:52opportunities. You know, you look at your your
- 1:10:54sports training stuff. I got athletes for kids right
- 1:10:58now. They're 19 and 20 years old.
- 1:11:00But like, I never thought as they were growing up.
- 1:11:03I mean, you and I didn't grow up with a sports trainer, right?
- 1:11:06Imagine where we would have been had we had that.
- 1:11:08Let me tell you something my I used to tell these kids because
- 1:11:11I used to be a athletes performance enhancement in Mesa.
- 1:11:14I used to tell these kids down there at April said you guys do
- 1:11:17not know how good you have it like most kids, you know.
- 1:11:20And The thing is, is that unfortunately that's that's a a
- 1:11:25generational curse that doesn't just fall over one group of
- 1:11:29individuals. It's not it's not picked by
- 1:11:31class, ethnicity or anything like that.
- 1:11:34Almost all kids don't understand some of the things that they
- 1:11:37have available to them today. What?
- 1:11:39Do you think about the recruiting?
- 1:11:40I mean nowadays, like when I was going through it, like I had to
- 1:11:43make film, right and had it actually had to send stuff out.
- 1:11:47I'm sure you did the same thing. But you look at kids nowadays,
- 1:11:49we talk about Kayla like, you know, now these these colleges
- 1:11:52are recruiting via Zoom in videos that they're watching.
- 1:11:57They're not even at the. Location there's now there are
- 1:12:01websites that they don't even have to come out and watch you.
- 1:12:05There are websites that athletes create profiles.
- 1:12:08I used to have a profile like that on one of those other sites
- 1:12:11where they would watch game footage of you.
- 1:12:13They don't even come and watch you.
- 1:12:14Ncsa.com, I mean, you build a profile on there, you upload
- 1:12:17your videos, and the crazy part is they want to see your work
- 1:12:20ethic. They don't.
- 1:12:21Yeah, that's what it is, 100%. This.
- 1:12:23That's all. That's what it's about.
- 1:12:25Yeah. It's about how much are you
- 1:12:26worth to my program, Correct. Are you, do you have the effort?
- 1:12:31Do you bring the work? Yeah.
- 1:12:33If you bring the work and you, you, you're worth something.
- 1:12:36That's all that they care about nowadays when it comes to that
- 1:12:39stuff. Especially unfortunately for
- 1:12:41recruiting nowadays, there's so much that goes into it between
- 1:12:46athletic performance, mental preparation, diet habits.
- 1:12:52They contact your family, they contact your work, they contact
- 1:12:56your, they reach out to your grandmas, your grand, you know
- 1:12:59your cousins. You know, when you're a high
- 1:13:02profile athlete and you are looking at being like a top 100
- 1:13:07athlete in, in your sport, whether it be baseball,
- 1:13:11football, soccer, and you're competing against billions.
- 1:13:18We're not talking about, you know, just a few kids down the
- 1:13:20street. You're competing with billions
- 1:13:24of kids around not only the United States, but, you know, I
- 1:13:27mean, with Trump's new thing, you know, we might not have any
- 1:13:30more international students, but you know, it you're, you're
- 1:13:34competing with a lot of kids that are your age, that are
- 1:13:38fresh, that have talent and, and are, are, are wanting to be at
- 1:13:46the next level. It's, it's not easy and, and
- 1:13:49it's not, it's not something to be taken lightly.
- 1:13:53I mean, these kids have so much more opportunity to be seen.
- 1:13:56I mean, I, I still the only like real footage I have of me
- 1:14:01playing football in high school is a highlight film.
- 1:14:05And it's a few clips of me tackling a few guys and then
- 1:14:09throwing a few footballs when I plan to play backup QB.
- 1:14:12Yeah, that's it. Yeah.
- 1:14:13Yeah, You know what I mean? Like.
- 1:14:15I have some film on me playing football.
- 1:14:18Yeah, I was on the sideline just like, yeah, go get them boys.
- 1:14:22You had all the Gatorade carrying the Gatorade down the
- 1:14:26sideline? Yeah.
- 1:14:28My sophomore year, I never came off the field.
- 1:14:30Really. Yeah, I was.
- 1:14:33I was on kickoff, kickoff return, punt, punt return.
- 1:14:36I was. Unfortunately, I had to be our
- 1:14:38center. Yeah, I was our center of my
- 1:14:41sophomore year. The next year, we actually got a
- 1:14:43few kids because, you know, that is that also that people, you
- 1:14:46know, we always talk about it and it'll keep doing it year in
- 1:14:49a generation, generation. Sometimes in some generation,
- 1:14:52kids are bigger than others. Oh yeah.
- 1:14:54And Junior, yeah, Junior's head is almost is completely almost
- 1:14:59over that counter, and he's only 5.
- 1:15:01Golly. You're right, right?
- 1:15:03You know, because like you, I'm 55 S you look at the way that
- 1:15:08these kids are raised nowadays is they're almost like groomed
- 1:15:11for certain sports based on how their growth methods are or
- 1:15:15whatever it may be. And, you know, that's, that's a
- 1:15:17that also comes off that mostly comes off of genetics.
- 1:15:21So, yeah, you know, depending on where your, your parents
- 1:15:25genetically, you know, all the, there's, there's a bunch of
- 1:15:30other things that go into it, you know, diet.
- 1:15:32Food like that. And stuff like that, if you come
- 1:15:35from a an individual, like most athletes are going to produce
- 1:15:41athletes, but that's only because one, they eat in a way
- 1:15:47that lets their DNA structure in a stronger format to reproduce a
- 1:15:55strong seed. And then on top of that, most
- 1:15:58athletes, you know, they're not they're not with Miss Rachel
- 1:16:02down the street. You know, they're they're with
- 1:16:04models or they're with former athletes like my wife used to
- 1:16:09play soccer. So like most athletes are going
- 1:16:12to find another athlete or somebody that can relate to
- 1:16:16that. There is the opposite of trach
- 1:16:18syndrome where you know, you got some athletes and with these
- 1:16:21people said, you know, they shouldn't be with, but you know,
- 1:16:25there's there's you know, when you put all that together, if
- 1:16:29you kind of like almost skips a generation from time to time.
- 1:16:33And then you know, with that you it makes it harder to field
- 1:16:40athletes at those lower levels too.
- 1:16:42You know, when you think about the opportunities that they have
- 1:16:46now, if I was when I was a smaller athlete and I was
- 1:16:51playing high school, if I had access to a gym like God, these
- 1:16:56kids have nowadays, or the knowledge, because we got to
- 1:16:58think about sciences changed. You know, the way the world has
- 1:17:03been, is being looked at has changed over the last 20 years.
- 1:17:07It's completely changed. Yeah.
- 1:17:09There's so many new findings, new studies that are finishing
- 1:17:13up because it takes, you know, 10/15/20 years to to actually do
- 1:17:17these studies to when you finish them, they have some sort of
- 1:17:22backing to them or stand to them.
- 1:17:24If you, you know, I'll take. I don't care like the vaccine
- 1:17:30shit like you can't, you can't tell me that you created a
- 1:17:33vaccine in six months, right? Like that's a like we're
- 1:17:36military. That's not how that works.
- 1:17:38No, that it takes time. That's planned out a lot of
- 1:17:42it's. Got to be tested.
- 1:17:43It's got to be tested and tested and tested for years.
- 1:17:47And, you know, and, and then anyway, CDC and things like
- 1:17:51that, they have regulations on testing that you have to test it
- 1:17:56for this amount of years and then it goes to the next level,
- 1:17:59then you test it there and then it goes to the next level.
- 1:18:01Because I looked into creating, you know, supplements and then
- 1:18:04also as a strength condition coach, when people ask me about
- 1:18:06supplements and stuff like that, I, I have to know what I'm
- 1:18:09talking. About, sure.
- 1:18:10Sure. If you don't know what you're
- 1:18:11talking about, please don't. Yeah, don't recommend.
- 1:18:13It don't recommend it. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:15If you've seen it on TikTok, stop.
- 1:18:17Yeah, please stop. Yeah, call Wayne's muscles.
- 1:18:21Yeah, right. Don't don't, don't follow all
- 1:18:24those TikTok people. Make sure you do back checking
- 1:18:27on who people are before you jump off the deep end.
- 1:18:30If you go to TikTok, just go to Instagram and make sure it backs
- 1:18:33up, right? Yeah.
- 1:18:34Yeah, yeah, that's, no, you are like Google Scholar, you know,
- 1:18:39like. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:41Look that like make sure and then also people got to remember
- 1:18:45that when you're talking about certain in taking minerals or
- 1:18:52taking like a supplementation or something like that, it's better
- 1:18:54to go get a blood work. Sure.
- 1:18:56Before, make sure you look and see what you need and what you
- 1:19:00don't need because your body could be producing enough
- 1:19:03protein but you don't have enough magnesium or KK2 in your
- 1:19:07system to get those molecules. To.
- 1:19:10You know, be absorbed properly and they need to build muscle
- 1:19:13and stuff like that. Also, you know, like if you want
- 1:19:18to like take creatine, you know, there's things that you have to
- 1:19:21do, you have to drink water, right, Because, you know,
- 1:19:24creatine it make you sick. You literally could dehydrate
- 1:19:29because creatine sucks water out of the body and puts it in the
- 1:19:32muscles. So it's, it's going to dehydrate
- 1:19:35you in a way. So you have to drink extra
- 1:19:37water. You know, think there's there's
- 1:19:38always something that goes with what you're doing, unless you're
- 1:19:42eating like a straight like I usually mostly eat a carnivore
- 1:19:46diet and I only eat, I kind of go off of what the Bible says.
- 1:19:49I only eat mostly split hoove animals.
- 1:19:52So elk, deer, beef, lamb, those are usually my choice in what I
- 1:19:58eat. And I mean you get all non
- 1:20:02essential amino acids from these meats.
- 1:20:04And when you're getting all nine essential amino acids, you're
- 1:20:07hitting your body weight or your ideal body weight in grams of
- 1:20:10protein. Do you do?
- 1:20:11A complete carnivore or do you add like vegetables, fruits in
- 1:20:14there? I love.
- 1:20:15Watermelon. OK, Watermelon is your friend.
- 1:20:17Watermelon is kind of like the forever life fruit.
- 1:20:22Yeah, like it literally. Or if it's good, is it a
- 1:20:25vegetable or a fruit? I can't remember.
- 1:20:26Something. It's a fruit because it's seeds.
- 1:20:28It's fruit. Well, what corn is a?
- 1:20:32Cucumber's got seeds. And it's a vegetable.
- 1:20:34Oh, really? Yeah, squash.
- 1:20:36If he doesn't have seeds, it's not real.
- 1:20:38Don't eat it. Don't buy it.
- 1:20:40Seedless grapes. It's manufactured by man.
- 1:20:42Really. Yeah, it's not real.
- 1:20:45OK. Did did that?
- 1:20:47Did apples have seeds? Yeah, they do.
- 1:20:49That's how they got Adam's apples, the seed, that stuff.
- 1:20:53I got that. You know what I mean?
- 1:20:54I like that. The seed you smell.
- 1:20:56Thank you. Marines are pretty smart.
- 1:20:58Yeah, sometimes I wouldn't give them all.
- 1:21:01Don't give them all that credit. There's some of them out there
- 1:21:03that need some help. They're still coloring outside
- 1:21:06of the lines. Well, let.
- 1:21:07Me ask you this question. Yeah, this is random.
- 1:21:10Sure, what's the time you are? Exactly.
- 1:21:13Yes. You married a Mexican?
- 1:21:15Yes. Is she fully developed in the
- 1:21:19Mexican culture? Yeah.
- 1:21:20Yes, OK. How was it being a white guy
- 1:21:23going into that Mexican culture? Easy, easy.
- 1:21:27I grew up in it, OK. So.
- 1:21:29My stepdad is like Mexican I think he's Mexican and Indian
- 1:21:33mix. Because I know there's like
- 1:21:34sometimes there's that cultural like, you know, you need to
- 1:21:37marry, you know, one of your own, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:21:42But. You know what, to be honest with
- 1:21:44you, I I don't think that that works for anybody.
- 1:21:48Yeah, I don't think that works for anybody.
- 1:21:50I don't care who you are, you can't marry.
- 1:21:53You can't freeze. And I totally agree with you,
- 1:21:55but again, there's like that older generation that may still
- 1:22:00have that mentality. Yeah, but it doesn't make sense
- 1:22:02and they can't, you know, and you can't make sense of it
- 1:22:05because if you really think about it, love is love.
- 1:22:08And people do some of the stupidest things for love.
- 1:22:10They they really do they. And, and that's because it's one
- 1:22:15of those things that once it gets into your body, once that
- 1:22:19feeling, that Aurora, you know, that energy is in your body and
- 1:22:25you, you're feeling that with somebody.
- 1:22:27It doesn't matter really if they're blue-green, purple, you
- 1:22:30know, it doesn't matter who they are or what they look like,
- 1:22:34you're going to be in love. That's why you have, that's why
- 1:22:37you have, you know, athletes with girls that are, you know,
- 1:22:40just regular women, You know, you have, you also have like
- 1:22:45girls who are like, you know, models and stuff like that.
- 1:22:49Are they're dating these most nerdiest guys in the world?
- 1:22:54You know, it's love the the law of attraction, right?
- 1:22:59You attract what you don't attract what you externally put
- 1:23:03out. You attract what you internally
- 1:23:06feel. Yeah.
- 1:23:07So like if even though like, like if I I could, most of the
- 1:23:13time when I'm standing out and around most people, you know,
- 1:23:16they look at me and they'll say, you know, yeah, you look like
- 1:23:19you're just tough, cowboy, you know, stuff like that.
- 1:23:21Like there's no talk to you, you know.
- 1:23:25But you know, that's just because when I stand still, I
- 1:23:27guess I have just that kind of face, you know?
- 1:23:30But I still get people that come up to me and say hi to me all
- 1:23:32the time like they're nice. Yeah, you have that resting
- 1:23:35bitch face. Yeah, but I'm not a bitch, so.
- 1:23:38Well, I mean, I dude, I I have that same thing, dude.
- 1:23:42I mean, I don't know how many times my kids like, are you mad?
- 1:23:44I'm like, no, I'm. Just my face.
- 1:23:46Yeah, I got I got the resting no fucks face.
- 1:23:49Yeah, yeah, yeah. So just no fucks given.
- 1:23:52Don't fuck with me. Yeah, this is kind of what I
- 1:23:54guess I have. But you know, like you just like
- 1:23:58love is just something that overtakes a lot of things.
- 1:24:01And and when it comes to something like that nowadays in
- 1:24:04particular, I don't think that it fits with the culture of the
- 1:24:09world because the culture of the world is finally taking on what
- 1:24:14it's supposed to be. And it's all is 1.
- 1:24:16Yep. And you know, there is there is
- 1:24:19a lot going on in the world that fighting against that, but there
- 1:24:24is a lot of good in the world that's fighting for them.
- 1:24:27The all is 1. We all need to be one.
- 1:24:30We are all one. Jesus so.
- 1:24:32So let me ask you this kind of as we start to close things up,
- 1:24:35if you were able to tell your son any one thing for him to
- 1:24:39remember the rest of his life, what would that be?
- 1:24:42Do it yourself. OK.
- 1:24:45Don't. Don't wait for somebody else
- 1:24:47because there is nobody else coming.
- 1:24:49I like that no matter who you are, nobody else is coming.
- 1:24:53No matter how many people you think love you, no matter how
- 1:24:56many people you think are in your corner when you hit rock
- 1:24:59bottom, there's nobody else but you.
- 1:25:02Don't. Don't sit there and wait for my
- 1:25:05approval. Don't wait for your mom's
- 1:25:07approval. Don't wait for your best
- 1:25:09friend's approval. Don't wait for anybody's
- 1:25:11approval. Because I tell you what, if
- 1:25:12you've already got a dream in your mind and your heart and
- 1:25:15your soul, God has given you something.
- 1:25:17He's blessed you with something. There's nobody that has a right
- 1:25:20to stand in the way of that. That's what you're gonna do.
- 1:25:23I like that. Don't wait, do it yourself, and
- 1:25:26I promise you, you're gonna enjoy.
- 1:25:27Life. I hope that's on your shirt.
- 1:25:29Because that is. Yeah, that is fucking powerful.
- 1:25:32Right. Yeah.
- 1:25:33I like that. If if you're gonna if you're
- 1:25:36gonna wait for somebody, you're never gonna be able to do it
- 1:25:39yourself. No.
- 1:25:40Well said. Well said.
- 1:25:41Yeah, Well, I know I can speak for Shane.
- 1:25:43Like, I really appreciate you coming out here and doing this
- 1:25:45with us. It's been great to get to know
- 1:25:46you. Your stories are awesome.
- 1:25:49Yeah. You know, hopefully we can do
- 1:25:50this again. Really.
- 1:25:51I thought, you know, we talked a lot about, like, what this
- 1:25:54episode was going to be about. And, you know, yeah, you're
- 1:25:57military, but you got ties to baseball and MMA and you know,
- 1:26:01all these other things and and your, you know, your training
- 1:26:05and, you know, just to hear somebody that has gone through
- 1:26:07what you've gone through, you know, you talk about the abuse
- 1:26:10to your body and all that other stuff and the ability to
- 1:26:12overcome all that. You know, that's really what
- 1:26:14this is about is, you know, we talked a little bit about, you
- 1:26:17know, what if somebody says this, somebody says that, and
- 1:26:19then you said just do it yourself.
- 1:26:20So, you know, I personally want to thank you for coming out and
- 1:26:23doing this. Hopefully we can do it again and
- 1:26:25just continue the stories and stuff when I.
- 1:26:27Get AC in the truck. I had to drive 2 hours here with
- 1:26:31no AC. Just do it yourself.
- 1:26:34Do it yourself and you're either going to do it or you're not
- 1:26:37going to do it. And that's that's something that
- 1:26:39I tell everybody that that's ever asked me, especially about
- 1:26:43bull riding, about anything in life.
- 1:26:45You're either gonna do it or you're not.
- 1:26:47Yeah, there is no if ands or buts about it.
- 1:26:49You're either gonna stay in your word and you're gonna press on
- 1:26:52and you're gonna take the lumps, you're gonna take the bruises
- 1:26:55and keep moving forward or you're gonna quit.
- 1:26:57Yeah. Awesome.
- 1:26:58So. So where can people?
- 1:27:01I'm gonna actually share all of his Instagram handles.
- 1:27:03We'll get that all attached and make sure that they do, that
- 1:27:06people can get him get connected.
- 1:27:08Yeah, we really appreciate it. Yeah, well done.
- 1:27:11I'm so happy to come out and do that and I'll be out here with
- 1:27:14you guys. Definitely do another show.
- 1:27:15Yes Sir. I'll try to bring out Junior.
- 1:27:18Yeah, that'd be awesome. I.
- 1:27:18Don't know if he'll sit still, but we'll see.
- 1:27:20It's all right. I mean, I got kids.
- 1:27:21He could. They could go do whatever.
- 1:27:24Yeah. All right, we won't find them.
- 1:27:27We got to put Junior's tag on him so just because he gets too
- 1:27:30far. It was awesome.
- 1:27:33But again, we appreciate you coming out, you know, showing
- 1:27:36some love to the show, but also just like allowing us to get to
- 1:27:39know you and hear your stories. And stuff like that.
- 1:27:41Especially somebody that didn't know you prior to this, like,
- 1:27:44listen, hearing a lot about you and, and, and you know, just
- 1:27:47getting to know a little bit about your lifestyle has been
- 1:27:49really fun to hear. It's been an honor, you know
- 1:27:51this. 1st guest first. Guest, 1st guest right here.
- 1:27:54Yeah, All right, I hope. Hey, hey, if you're watching,
- 1:27:57it's. A Marine pop.
