- 2:20once again we return to a previous era of yours, truly, Johnny
- 2:24Dollar, this time the John Lund era. Lunn took over the role of
- 2:30Johnny Dollar in November of nineteen fifty two and held it until the show went
- 2:35off the air in August or September of nineteen fifty four. Lue was a
- 2:42very well respected actor, particularly within the Hollywood community, where he was a
- 2:46longtime vice president of the Screen Actors Guild. Lund has definitely not been considered
- 2:53a fan favorite. In fact, in his book on this era, John
- 2:58Abbott describes the John Lunn era as Bori and Jim Wood, host of the
- 3:05rating Detective Story Hour, was initially not a huge fan of the one era.
- 3:10However, in recent years he went back and revisited some of the John
- 3:15LND episodes and found that he brought a lot of humanity and warmth to the
- 3:21role. Personally, I do find one to be pretty good in the role
- 3:24of Johnny Dollar. The Johnny Dollar role is one of those that multiple actors
- 3:31have played, and sometimes there will be debates to indicate that one actor was
- 3:38really bad, and usually this isn't the case, and that you can take
- 3:43a look at a wide variety of different franchises, for example, Sherlock Holmes,
- 3:49James Bond, or Doctor Who or The Saint. Rarely is it that
- 3:54there was some really bad actors, but usually there's a definitive verse by which
- 4:00all others pal and that's kind of the unfortunate fate of John Lunn. One
- 4:04actually has the second most episodes in circulation of any of the Johnny Dollar actors,
- 4:11and there's a good mix. A lot of them are what I call
- 4:14the insurance procedurals, which kind of mixed the insurance investigation with police procedural and
- 4:19the results aren't always all that interesting. But there are a lot of other
- 4:24cases with some interesting concepts. My favorite of which was the one where John
- 4:28Lunn Johnny Dollar went on a bus undercover with one person he didn't know who
- 4:34was a killer. Anyway, it's time for today's episode. Well, today
- 4:38doesn't focus on an episode of Johnny Dollar that hasn't been heard in any form
- 4:44in recent years, but one that wasn't available except as a rehearsal. Rehearsal
- 4:50recordings really aren't my favorite, and if there's a situation where there's a rehearsal
- 4:57recording of a program and a non rehearsal program, you'll hear the actual broadcast
- 5:02version of it. However, there are some episodes where the only thing that
- 5:06remains is the rehearsal and that was the case with the San Antonio Matter John
- 5:13Lon episode, which also served as a basis for the Valentine Manor in the
- 5:17five part era. But now the actual broadcast version of the San Antonio Manner
- 5:25has actually become available for people to listen to. So we're going to bring
- 5:29you the broadcast version of the San Antonio Matter. Original air date was April
- 5:34twenty eighth of nineteen fifty three, and we played this episode back in the
- 5:41rehearsal version back in February of twenty twelve. So let's enjoy the full version
- 5:46of the san Antonio matter. Wrigley's Fairmant Chewing Gum, the refreshing, delicious
- 5:53treat that gives you chewing enjoyment presents for your listening enjoyment. John Lunn as
- 6:00at Wrigley, Johnny, are you free? You mean him? I available?
- 6:03Yeah? What's up? Ed? Remember Mark san Antonio, the bootlegger?
- 6:10Yeah? Sure? What about him? Somebody shot him this morning,
- 6:13shot him to death in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Oh yeah, great Eastern
- 6:16Finality set up a trust two years ago for san Antonio's daughter. A wonderful
- 6:21report before they come across. I see you know who killed him yet?
- 6:26Or why? Ah? Not a thing, Johnny, Yes, that he's
- 6:28dead. When can you leave? As soon as I can get a plane.

- 7:51Great Eastern Fidelity and Life Insurance Corporation, sixth and Jordan Avenue, Hartford,
- 7:57Connecticut. The following is an accounting of situres during my investigation of the
- 8:01San Antonio matter. Expense account Item one one hundred and sixty two dollars and
- 8:09three cents Transportation and Incidental's Hartford to Saint Petersburg, Florida. I arrived exactly
- 8:16ten hours after I received the call from mid Quigley. The rainy weather there
- 8:20was as bad if not worse than the weather I just left. I checked
- 8:24in at the Saint Petersburg Hotel, shaved, showered, had a meal,
- 8:26and started in. My first contact was a police officer, Lieutenant Benjamin by
- 8:31name, a big, swarthy man who seemed to know what he was about.
- 8:35I don't quite get this dollar. What's your part? Just at my
- 8:39insurance company would like a full report on everything that's happened. Oh, you
- 8:43mean a report separate from what we have. Yeah, that's about it,
- 8:46lieutenant. Well it's their dough. They can spend it anyway they want to.
- 8:50What can I do for you? Oh maybe we can help each other,
- 8:52a lieutenant, I feel sort of. Let me tag along and see
- 8:56what's what on the case. We'll see. Well. San Antonio bought a
- 9:01big place over on the south end of town eleven years ago, just after
- 9:05he was released from Alcatraz. He's lived there ever since, quiet, minding
- 9:09his own business, keeping his nose out of trouble. Yeah, so I
- 9:11understand. As long as a man does that, even a man with a
- 9:15background like san Antonio, as long as a man does that, we don't
- 9:18bother him. He doesn't bother us. Well, today it was the first
- 9:22peep we ever got out of him. What happened seemed at six o'clock this
- 9:26morning, he phoned into the station and said that somebody was watching his house.
- 9:30Proulcar went out to have a look around. He told the officers that
- 9:33two men had been hanging around the front of his house, but they got
- 9:35away just before the car showed up. M hum. He gave a description.
- 9:39Yeah, both about six feet dark or dark overcoats and hats. San
- 9:45Antonio didn't recognize either of them. The officers put the description on the air
- 9:48and tried to find them, but they didn't have any luck. Oh,
- 9:50san Antonio wasn't the kind of a bird to get excited about a couple of
- 9:54guys taking out his place. He pretty well knew how to take care of
- 9:58himself and handle trouble. Yeah, but you say that he hadn't been in
- 10:01trouble or asked for any around here, that's right too, And I'm sure
- 10:05he didn't want any either. So his call was treated like any other Prower
- 10:09call. We investigated, didn't find anything, and promised to keep our eyes
- 10:13open. The cook came on duty about eight thirty. She went in the
- 10:18kitchen, made him some breakfast, took it up to his room. She
- 10:22found him dead. He'd been shot twice with the luger. Lab has the
- 10:26slugs. Now it's a close range job. Well, then the surest bed
- 10:30is the two men that san Antonio reported watching his house. Huh, that's
- 10:33about it. Wish we could find them somewhere. What about the cook?
- 10:39She just worked their days, fixing his meals and taking care of him.
- 10:41San Antonio must have been past sixty he was sixty seven. I guess he
- 10:46was beginning to show a little tread man who's lived the kind of life he
- 10:50has and done the things he's done, is bound to show somewhere and want
- 10:54some rest sometime in his life. According to her, he spent his days
- 10:58painting. Painting, Yeah, Mark san Antonio. Every room in the house
- 11:03covered with pictures he's done his last few years. Oil's pretty good too.
- 11:07And when he wasn't painting, he was listening to records, all kinds of
- 11:11heavy stuff in the way of music around the place. Now, you hardly
- 11:13figure a bootlegger like san Antonio thinking of anything like music and heart. Hardly.
- 11:18Yeah. And all the time he was in action running booze up in
- 11:22New York and getting himself in trouble with the tax people. He was bound
- 11:26to step on a lot of toes and get himself a lot of enemies,
- 11:28the kind of people who wouldn't forget you talk too much. Oh, yes,
- 11:35no. And then I'd meet him on the street or in a store.
- 11:37He seemed pretty gentle up how he lives. Apparently he saved something from
- 11:43the old days. A house he paid for in cash bank in New York.
- 11:46Used to send him a statement every month. I suppose he had some
- 11:48arrangement with him. Wow, that's about it so far. I see,
- 11:54I'm not sure appreciate the informations. Okay, when I get anymore, I'll
- 11:58let you know. Grime labs still working on some of the stuff in his
- 12:01room. Maybe we'll get something there. Say, do you mind if I
- 12:07talk to that cook? Oh that's your privileged dollar. Her name's Olsen.
- 12:11She's staying at the san Antonio house during all this. Okay, san Antonio's
- 12:16daughter blew into down this afternoon. She's at the house too. What does
- 12:20she have to say? Oh nothing. She didn't even know Mark san Antonio
- 12:24was her father until your insurance company told her. Didn't know. Oh,
- 12:26No, she's been living in Philadelphia all these years with an aunt all very
- 12:31legitimate. The girl's been using the name Randall, Edith Randall. Yes,
- 12:52sir, how do you, missus Olson? Yes, sir, my name
- 12:56is Dollar, Missus Elson. I'm from the Great Eastern Fidelity people. Do
- 13:00you suppose I could speak with miss Randall? Oh? I don't think so,
- 13:03sir. She's not feeling well, all of these being quite a shocked
- 13:07to her. I see it, well, and I guess my trip out
- 13:11here tonight was for nothing. Will you come tomorrow, mister Dollar? Please?
- 13:18Yes, miss Randal. Who isn't it It's a mister Dollar. He's
- 13:22from the insurance company. Are your round the company? Yes, I'd like
- 13:28to talk for him. The woman who said at the base of the iron
- 13:31grilled stairway was tall and dark eyed, and she came towards me, smiling,
- 13:35showing a frank, wide happy mouth, young kind of face that could
- 13:41have been twenty or maybe thirty. Missus Olson excused herself when we were alone,
- 13:46I wanted to talk to someone who might be able to give me a
- 13:50little more information about all this. It's all quite new to me. Well,
- 13:52i'll tell you what I can, miss Randall, Yes, I'm sure
- 13:56you will from one of mister Hurt and the insurances told me on the phone,
- 14:01I'm to be quite well off because this man was murdered here today,
- 14:05you mean, mister san Antonio. Yes, mister san Antonio. They tell
- 14:09me he was my father. To awaken one morning and discover you're not one
- 14:16person but an entirely different person. I mean, I'm the daughter of a
- 14:22famous racketeer who's been murdered. You seem to me like a very nice person,
- 14:28and so do you, mister Daller. Will you tell me all about
- 14:33this please, well, just our part of it, miss Randall. Let's
- 14:37see you're twenty six, now, is that right? That is well,
- 14:41twenty six years ago your father was on trial for income tax evasion. Just
- 14:48before he was convicted, he set up a trust fund with my insurance company
- 14:52to provide for you. He's been paying money for your support and education all
- 14:56these years. According to the condition of the true must the rest of the
- 15:01money reverts to you now comes to well over fifty thousand dollars. And that's
- 15:07all there is to it. Yeah, except for this, you mean my
- 15:11father. So strange to say that my father's murder. I suppose I'm grateful
- 15:20to my father. I suppose I should be grateful. I can't say that
- 15:26I'm particularly sorry about his death any more than I would be if any human
- 15:28being died violently somewhere. Strangely. Life treats us sometimes very strangely. You
- 15:39know, you've somehow made me feel comfortable in this house. May I offer
- 15:43you a drink? It was strange for me too, because I felt comfortable
- 15:52in the house. Over the drinks, we talked of Mark san Antonio.
- 15:58I told her what I knew of his life, of his activities up until
- 16:02the time he'd been sent to Alcatraz. She told me how she'd been reared,
- 16:07far removed from anything that might have connected her in any way with the
- 16:10san Antonio name. Altogether, it was a revealing conversation for both of us.
- 16:15She'd never imagined any part of the kind of life her father had lived,
- 16:19and I never imagined that it was possible for anyone to get away from
- 16:22a man like san Antonio with the road. Johnny, all right, how
- 16:32long will you be in Saint Petersburg till all this is straightened out? You
- 16:36mean you'll be here until they find out who killed him? How about you?
- 16:41I really don't know. I really don't even know why I came here
- 16:45exactly, Yes, I do. I wanted to see him, see what
- 16:52he looked like, what kind of a life he led here? Did you
- 16:57see him? No? I suppose I can if I want to. But
- 17:03I have seen what kind of a life he had. He was just an
- 17:08ordinary man, wasn't he. Have you noticed the pictures he's painted? May
- 17:15I ask you something? Well? Yes? How do you feel about him?
- 17:19Now? Is this for your report? For myself? Since you've been
- 17:26here in these last two hours, I've begun to think of him for what
- 17:33he was my father. I mean, I'd like to know why he was
- 17:37killed and who did it? Will I see you again? I hope so
- 17:48he did? Yes, I hope so very much, So do I Johnny.
- 18:02I left her at the door of that night with a warm sensation inside
- 18:06of me, something I certainly hadn't expected in the routine business of investigating a
- 18:10murder case. The next morning, I was back at the house talking to
- 18:17missus Olsen. She gave me all the information she could remember about San Antonio's
- 18:21activities up until the time of his death. Same information shed given the police,
- 18:26all of it accurate, but lacking any possible clues to the identity of
- 18:30his slayer or slayers. I had breakfast with Edith there and then went back
- 18:33downtown to spend a solid twelve hours in the company of Lieutenant Benjamin, who
- 18:37had still not located or identified the two mysterious men. However, there were
- 18:42other developments. Say this may be something. Oh, san Antonio's partner in
- 18:48the old days, Pallalichi, was murdered in Newark last night, Timmy Palalici,
- 18:52that's the one. Any details, oh, just that he was shot
- 18:56to death with a luger. When the slug's taken from San Antonio's body were
- 19:03compared with those that killed Pallolchi and were proved to have been fired from the
- 19:07same gun, the case took our new proportions. Every available bit of information
- 19:11regarding the two ex big shots of the twenties was located, read and re
- 19:15read. It meant activity in such cities as Saint Louis, Chicago, New
- 19:19Orleans, and Buffalo, but no new information as to the identity of the
- 19:23killer. Johnny, Hey, what is it you're shaking? Hold me,
- 19:30Hold me please, I suppose I'm being a terrible fool about it all,
- 19:34Johnny. But they've been after me all day, cheap little things. A
- 19:41newspaper syndicate wants me to write my exclusive story. Is the daughter of Mark
- 19:44Saint Antonio, very princess, daughter of racketeer. Hey, hey, no,
- 19:48take it easy, honey. Even Hollywood called. Some producer saw my
- 19:52picture in the paper and offered me a contract. He says, he has
- 19:55a script already. Come on, come on, now, come on,
- 20:00oh try. Women are fools, aren't they. I shouldn't have come here.
- 20:10I shouldn't have shown up at all. Then what would I have done
- 20:12either? And what would I have done? It makes you talk a drink,
- 20:19Johnny, I'll put on a new face. It had become apparent to
- 20:26me in the five days I had known her, and the five days that
- 20:30she'd known of her father, that she'd grown to love him by the memory
- 20:33of him. She stated it very simply. Everyone needs to father. If
- 20:41you find out you have one, or had one, really you love him.
- 20:45They were walking up the gravel path of the house when she said that.
- 20:49I suppose I was thinking of how nice it would be to kiss her
- 20:52at the door. When I heard someone behind me. I twisted trying for
- 20:56the gun in my inside pocket, but there was nobody that should at least
- 21:00nobody I could see me, Me, Jemmy what Edith died right there and
- 21:12I lowered it to the ground. Friends, wherever you are, whatever you're

- 22:18refreshing, delicious, And now, with our star John Lund, we
- 22:29bring you the second act of yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Ten seconds after
- 22:47read if Randall died in my arms, I was stumbling down the gravel path
- 22:51that led from the house to the road. It all happened so suddenly and
- 22:53violently that I can't say that what I did from their on or what I
- 22:56felt was entirely rational. All I know is that a car I was part
- 23:00of the deep end of the gateway, and two men were just climbing into
- 23:03it. Hey, hey, you too, stop stop, stop, get
- 23:21out of there. You get out with your hands up my head. I'm
- 23:26afraid to get out. Come on, I'm gonna come here, all right,
- 23:33you two, come on, come on, No use on him,
- 23:38mister you see you stop? You got him real good? You? Hey,
- 23:47hey, stay with you? What is it? What's happened? Phoning
- 23:53the police? Missus Olsen? Get over here right away? Go on,
- 23:59do what I tell you. Worry all you pretty tough? Well? What's
- 24:07your name? Just very equal? Who's he was? My brother? John?
- 24:17Eat the dogs? Listen, Oh tell it to me, Tell it
- 24:26to me right now. There's no policeman around the calvia, nobody but you
- 24:29and me. If you don't tell it to me. Now, you'll never
- 24:32tell it to anybody. Now tell it, tell it? No, I
- 24:38die first. I had one bullet left to my gun. I set the
- 24:45barrel back against his temple and pulled back the hammer. I think I really
- 24:51meant to go through with it. And for the first time I noticed that
- 24:55my shoulder was covered with blood. My head began to ring, and I
- 25:00I had let go and straighten up. That was not the thing to do.
- 25:03Oh hello, their dollar. Huh Oh, quite a night this one.
- 25:23Huh yeah, Oh, you stopped one boy? You were sure curled
- 25:29up when we got there. Eat it. I'm sorry, dollar. They
- 25:36thought I might have been wrong. No, you weren't. How long am
- 25:40I slated for this place? Well? The doctor says, you can get
- 25:42out when you want to if you like talking. They were just there and
- 25:48they shot her. That's it. Which one I don't know. They were
- 25:53together. That's enough, isn't it? Sure? Sure, same Luga that
- 25:56killed San Antonio and Palalici. Just try to pin it down a little more.
- 26:00We can't get much out of the one that's left. Let me ask
- 26:03him some questions. It's easy. I know how you feel about her.
- 26:07Just lie back there, now, did he say anything at all. Oh,
- 26:12nothing more than his name and his brother's name. Found papers on him,
- 26:17that's say that from New York. Please, New York are looking him
- 26:18up right now. So far they haven't been able to find any connection with
- 26:22San Antonio. People like san Antonio and Palachi make enemies. But that girl,
- 26:29it doesn't figure. And those two flew here from New York just to
- 26:33get her. Yeah, yeah, Dollar, you talked to her a lot
- 26:37in these last few days. What'd she say? Nothing that has anything to
- 26:41do with this. You know yourself. She didn't even know who her father
- 26:44was. They got killed. That could have been an act. No,
- 26:47it wasn't. I knew her well enough to tell you that. Yeah,
- 26:51why would they gun her down? Why the trip? That Rico boy you're
- 26:55holding in the jail hospital as the answer? Get it from him. We
- 27:00will, Dollar, we will. Oh just a minute, sure, old
- 27:14Dollar, h Maybe I spoke too soon. Rico died five minutes ago.
- 27:25As far as my investigation of the San Antonio case went, could have ended
- 27:29right there. The logo found and the dead Rico brother was the same gun
- 27:33that had fired fatal bullets into all three victims. I got my release from
- 27:41the hospital, and late that afternoon, walked into Lieutenant Benjamin's office. Dollar,
- 27:48I don't get it, don't get what here. This just came from
- 27:52New York on the Rico boys, Oh, came to this country when they
- 27:56were eighteen and twenty one. Both of them were naturalized citizens. Records not
- 28:00a thing, No trouble ever, that's funny. What else? What's about
- 28:04it? At least there can't seem to locate their old man. He disappeared
- 28:07a week ago, lived on the East Side somewhere. He a naturalized citizen
- 28:11too. Oh, that's another funny thing. He's taking out his papers and
- 28:15was due for examination with the immigration people this week. They're looking for him
- 28:18too. When are you leaving tomorrow afternoon at the one o'clock clean, Well,
- 28:25come on, I'll buy you some dinner. We had dinner together and
- 28:32talked about the case. It had been a strange one. The deaths were
- 28:36useless, the motives unknown. The killers weren't even associated with their victims.
- 28:41I parted company with Lieutenant Benjamin and went back to my hotel to trouble it
- 28:45out with sleep. About eleven o'clock I had a phone call Johnny Dower.
- 28:52I don't know. This is ben Oh, what's up? Old man Rico
- 28:56just walked into the city Morgue. He wants to take his two sons back
- 29:00New York for burial. Twenty minutes later, I was standing in the corner's
- 29:06office when Lieutenant Benjamin led a small wizard old man into the room and sat
- 29:10him down in one of the chairs. Gave him a glass of water,
- 29:14offered him a cigarette. Old man refused, no, no, no,
- 29:17no, oh, thank you, mister Rico. This is mister Dollar.
- 29:22Hello, mister dollst Rico. I read of you you killing my boys.
- 29:30So yes, they tried to kill me. Yeah, I know, I
- 29:36know, too bad. Why mister Rico, it just seems you were washing
- 29:48the way. I don't mean about me, I mean about Edith Randall and
- 29:51Palalichi and Mark san Antonio. Why I take her the water now? Please?
- 30:00Why do you know why she? And tell me they're all dead?
- 30:06Now? I missed you alive. Pietro Rico was held in custody for the
- 30:18immigration officials. He refused to talk about his sons or any of their activities.
- 30:23He just stayed in his jail cell, silent, noncommittal to all visitors,
- 30:29including the chaplain. I don't suppose we'd never have gotten the story of
- 30:33it, except that the will of Mark san Antonio disclosed that, before her
- 30:37marriage to him, his wife's name had been Maria Rico. Yeah, mot
- 30:45equations da, No, I've got some answers. Mark san Antonio's wife was
- 30:51your daughter, Wasn't she? Wasn't she? She was? That? All
- 30:59you have to say? I not talk well, and I do, mister
- 31:04Rico, because your daughter had a daughter, a lovely, wonderful daughter,
- 31:11that your two sons killed. I happen to know that girl. She had
- 31:15to die to why bad Alichi, sad Antonio and her they had to die?
- 31:23All the bad All of us are bad at one time or another.
- 31:29Who made them die? You? She who gave you the right? I'm
- 31:34the father. When a daughter married a bad man on the bad they cannot
- 31:41come of it. He came to our village many years ago, and he
- 31:45took her away. He and the man Padlichi help him to live with me
- 31:52all this time. I live only to destroy him. For that, I
- 32:00destroy him and the other man and the girl to my sons, Why the
- 32:06girl she could not have been a good from a bad man of Vendetta was
- 32:14at it. If you would like Mendette, he was a bad man who
- 32:21did a bad things. Bad man. I smoke, now you can a
- 32:30cigar. The disposition of old Pietro Rico is up to the immigration authorities.
- 32:52I didn't stay around Saint Petersburg for all the complex examinations would have to be

- 35:12at the same time when from Hollywood, John Lund returns as Yours Truney Johnny
- 35:17Dollar. This is the CBS Radio Network Floorway, Welcome Back. This episode
- 35:25really made a much better impression on me listening to the completed, finished version
- 35:34as opposed to the rehearsal. I believe the rehearsal. The rehearsal I could
- 35:37tell. I didn't listen to the whole thing, but it was three minutes
- 35:42longer, and most of that, if I recall correctly, was repeated lines,
- 35:47just little delays that you would expect at a rehearsal. Plus the sound
- 35:52quality was pretty bad. This one I was able just to really listen to
- 35:58and focus in on the store, and it was quite emotionally powerful. It
- 36:04was different, I think than the Valentine manner for the serial version. I
- 36:08did love that last part of the Valentine manner when Bob Bailey as Johnny Dollar
- 36:17calls into the insurance company and you can hear the gun being caked as he
- 36:24goes out to confront the bad guy. But there's a very This one is
- 36:31just very honest and moving, and I think, what what does help it
- 36:36actually is because John Lons Johnny Dollar is a very mild character overall, very
- 36:45professional, and the way that he is personally involved it really does convey just
- 36:52how this is affecting him, and the acting here was just absolutely fantastic.
- 36:58So I really am a fan of this and I truly appreciate it. And
- 37:02over the next couple of weeks, we're going to take a listen to some
- 37:07loned episodes that haven't been played at all, and I'm hoping they're going to
- 37:10be as good as this one. It was. All right. Well,
- 37:14on to some listener comments and feedback. Wally emails into said lock the special
- 37:22omnibus edition of Johnny Dollar suggests you do it on a continuing basis every other
- 37:28Friday, question mark every third Saturday. Well, thanks so much, Wally.
- 37:32I'm glad you've enjoyed the omnibus versions we did of yours, truly,
- 37:37Johnny Dollar, and it's something I'm going to return to, though probably not
- 37:42on any sort of regular basis, just because there's a limited number of serials
- 37:46and then we're all out again. But I do hope to do at least
- 37:52one more omnibus edition before the end of the year, and certainly try and
- 37:55work these into our schedules of special and extras, because I know it'll be
- 38:01quite a while before the serial edition cycle by in our rotation of shows.
- 38:07Well, that will do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with
