- 0:00Live from the Duncan Music Lounge here at I Heard Headquarters in Hartford. We
- 0:04have new con men's basketball coach with us, Dan Hurley. I'm like Crispino
- 0:08coach. Let's talk a little recruiting. This class that you just brought in
- 0:13here looks really solid. A lot of good talented guys and you just mentioned
- 0:17two or three are gonna play a lot. You mentioned a guy when one
- 0:20of them is gonna start? Is it Steph Castle? Can you announce that
- 0:24or do you wanted to know? I mean, the way he's played in
- 0:27the preseason, it's there's not a lot of drama there internally with the team
- 0:33in the locker room, there's not a lot of questions about who's gonna start
- 0:37with Tristan and Cam and Alex and Donovan. So he just you know,
- 0:42the guy's just physically it's impressive just how physically ready he is. He's a
- 0:47super humble kid. He's making a lot of like freshman type of mistakes,
- 0:52like especially like off the ball defensively, or like missing an assignment on a
- 0:57blockout or just like balls already issues where he like there's no bad players on
- 1:03the court now, like this isn't like the consolation of an a you tore
- 1:07him on a Sunday and August where no one gives it stop myself, no
- 1:14one cares, and there's a button. There's another game, got a button.
- 1:18Yeah, so he's just great. Parents want us to coach him.
- 1:23Never has his palms up. You know, we're a programmed We don't want
- 1:27your poms up, you know, like, let us coach you. He's
- 1:32you can have a terrific year. Really looks ready to go. Yeah in
- 1:36the blue White night. I wanted to see his shooting. He did get
- 1:38some shots. How he made some midbrain shots. Uh, where is he
- 1:42on that part of it? I mean he's a good facilitator obviously, has
- 1:46a great point guard already before he starts his college career, But where is
- 1:49he on that again? Not the not the same type of shot creating facilitating
- 1:55like Andre, but you know, more more more of a scoring ability.
- 2:00That's I think what makes the starting five unique is that you may have five
- 2:05double figure or you should have five double figure scores in the starting five,
- 2:09which I don't think many teams have that time. Well, if you get
- 2:13that, you get to fifty anyway, and then a couple of guys get
- 2:17fifteen, you get sixty seventy. I could do math bro talk. Really,
- 2:23I'm a child. I try to show off my math that I don't
- 2:27have much talent in Solo Ball, Solomon Ball, we call him solo.
- 2:32Yeah, he seems like he's a I don't want to say happy, go
- 2:36lucky, but I haven't seen that guy not smiling. Yeah. He was
- 2:40just unique parents, you know, Mike and Erica just really set a high
- 2:46bar at home and just high accountability, great work ethic, tremendous talent,
- 2:53great, great presence too. When you meet him, you know, he's
- 2:54got just a great, just a great, great way about him. He's
- 2:59just he's he's he's got that personality, a little bit of that yes,
- 3:05yeah, yeah, no, great pedigree. So he is shooting the ball
- 3:07great, and and that has been an unbelievable development for us because we lost
- 3:12some bench shooting and his shooting looks highly sustainable and there's an athleticism there that
- 3:16he brings. But it's just he's They got to catch up defensively. I
- 3:22mean they just early on, they're just they're going to bury us defensively a
- 3:27little bit. These guys and they're gonna blow some assignments, but we're just
- 3:30gonna have to live with it, because once they start playing like sophomores and
- 3:35that bench comes together, it's gonna be great. Yeah, j Ross,
- 3:38do you use j Ross in practice? What do you do with them?
- 3:43Jaden and Jylyn? That becomes a problem, Jen, Jylyn and I've screwed
- 3:49it up a lot early. Yeah. Yeah, he's been the biggest surprise.
- 3:53And you know he's just listen, he's he's got just a ton of
- 4:00upside. He's you know, he's still developing. You don't want to set
- 4:04to high of a bar for him, but you know, he thought that
- 4:09guy's going to be early entry NBA player and three and D type of guy
- 4:15with big time length and size and all the traits you look for and the
- 4:20great pedigree. Parents. You know, Dad played football at Rutgers, Mom
- 4:25played volleyball at Rutgers. You know family. I think her side is like
- 4:30hockey players from mass So they're toughs. So they're tough. Yeah. Yeah,
- 4:33Yeah, he's got a he's got a good mix. Yeah, he
- 4:35also looked he looks like he's got a pro body already. To me,
- 4:39when I first saw him, I'm like, wow, that looks like he's
- 4:42a professional. Almost Yeah, and just as important, just impressive people.
- 4:46You you you meet them, you don't see yourself. Like when the lights
- 4:48come on, this guy's going to he's got to crumble, you know,
- 4:54Stewie, did you tell him about that? You got to let him know.
- 4:59That's why I because I'm going Jay Stu Stu gotts, but he doesn't
- 5:06know that. It's like Jersey Damn Levatard reference. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 5:12A big fan of that show. Do you like that show, Leotard?
- 5:15I did like it. I did like it. Now I don't.
- 5:17He's in Miami. You don't even hear him nationally. Uh in Cingari interesting
- 5:23character. I mean he's got he's huge, he's big, he's got long,
- 5:26he's going to get the wingspan. He's also got an interesting personality,
- 5:30it seems. Yeah. I mean just back to even Jay Stewart, he
- 5:33he got as much game and feel and ability as anyone in that class.
- 5:40And like he's it's just it's taken him probably just a little bit longer,
- 5:45just adjusting to, you know, like Northeastern style of play. But he's
- 5:48got so much game and we're just you know, pleading with him to have
- 5:54a combination of patience and and then pushing himself and giving himself some time.
- 6:00And Yousef has gotten so much better. I think we look at him as
- 6:03is trying to become a rim protecting, good ball screen defender, ball screen
- 6:09offensive player. You know, I don't know that he'll be the type of
- 6:13player like we were going to use him like we did a Dama. You
- 6:16know, he'll play a different way and it's going to take him some time
- 6:21before he could probably you know, help us on game night a lot.
- 6:26All right, just about a minute before we go to the break, you've
- 6:29been talking about Samson Johnson a lot. I saw him in the Blue White
- 6:31Night. I like what he's doing. I mean, you see him every
- 6:34day, so you know better. But it's not just you're not blowing smoke,
- 6:39are you. I Mean he's been the leading scorer for us in the
- 6:42scrimmages and in the close scrimmages, and then he's been not rebounding as well
- 6:46as we need him too when he's playing the five. But he's a problem
- 6:49for people at the five, at the four that didn't play with strengths in
- 6:54terms of his athleticism, rolling to the rim. He's like a movement center,
- 6:59and you put three shooters or four shooter scores around him and you let
- 7:02him roll to the rim and play for lobs. He was I mean,
- 7:06he averaged close to twenty points in the two closed scrimmages and was our most
- 7:13consistent player. So two centers again. Yeah, another great personality too,
- 7:17Samson Johnson. All right, quick commercial, bake would be back with more
- 7:20of the Ukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Dan Hurley.
