- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to another episode of Snakes Territory, part
- 0:12Speaker 1: of the Foul Territory Network. Be sure to like this video,
- 0:15Speaker 1: subscribe to our YouTube channel, maybe leave us a five-star
- 0:19Speaker 1: review wherever you get your podcasts. I am Jesse Friedman
- 0:22Speaker 1: alongside Jack Summers, who is out at Chase Field. Jack,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I know it has been a long day for you
- 0:29Speaker 1: and kind of an eventful day out.
- 0:32Speaker 2: At the ballpark.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Diamondbacks lose to the Phillies by a final score of 2-1.
- 0:37Speaker 1: But Jack, the biggest story of the day, Cattell Marte
- 0:40Speaker 1: is back in this clubhouse and back on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, well, it was a lot longer day for the team,
- 0:47Speaker 3: for sure, and one that they had to get through.
- 0:49Speaker 3: They almost got through it with a sneaky victory, and
- 0:51Speaker 3: they had their chances. Would have been a nice way
- 0:54Speaker 3: to cap it off. The game ended with Cattell on.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Deck, you know, able to get on. It would have
- 1:00Speaker 2: been a dream scenario.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Unfortunately, that didn't come to pass today, but A lot
- 1:05Speaker 3: of news and events to get to, you know, from
- 1:08Speaker 3: the discussions with Cattell and with Torrey and then just
- 1:11Speaker 3: now postgame with Cattell as well.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Well, let's go ahead and dive in, Jack. The game,
- 1:17Speaker 1: of course, was important, but I think that's secondary on
- 1:21Speaker 1: a day like this where, I mean, it's one of
- 1:24Speaker 1: the biggest news days, frankly, that the Diamondbacks have had
- 1:26Speaker 1: in probably the last decade. Cattell Marte making his return
- 1:30Speaker 1: to the team. Of course, he was on the injured
- 1:33Speaker 1: list for the 10-day minimum, and we're now a couple
- 1:36Speaker 1: weeks out from the day in Boston where he did
- 1:39Speaker 1: not show up to the ballpark. I know you talked
- 1:41Speaker 1: to Cattell and Torrey at length before the game, Jack,
- 1:45Speaker 1: but I know you also just talked to Cattell in
- 1:47Speaker 1: the clubhouse postgame. I'm curious what that conversation was like.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Well, you know, as you've probably saw and heard on Twitter,
- 1:56Speaker 3: there were a fair amount of boos when he came
- 1:59Speaker 3: up to bat the first time. And that got even
- 2:03Speaker 3: a little bit louder when he grounded out his first
- 2:05Speaker 3: at bat. Then from there, it was a little bit
- 2:08Speaker 3: more mixed. And he was asked how he felt like,
- 2:13Speaker 3: you know, was he surprised by that? And he said, yes,
- 2:16Speaker 3: he was somewhat surprised by that reception. I don't think
- 2:19Speaker 3: he expected to receive that many boos. Now, that may
- 2:22Speaker 3: speak to some lack of situational awareness on his part,
- 2:27Speaker 3: because it wasn't surprising to just about anybody else, I think,
- 2:30Speaker 3: that that was the case. Um, kind of fast forwarding
- 2:33Speaker 3: towards the end of his comments, you know, during the, um,
- 2:36Speaker 3: pregame press conference, he was asked if he had any
- 2:39Speaker 3: message for the fans and he kind of just shook
- 2:43Speaker 3: his head and was silent. Um, just now he said
- 2:47Speaker 3: he didn't really quite understand a word or two that
- 2:49Speaker 3: was spoken in the question. Um, and he didn't really
- 2:52Speaker 3: know what to say at that moment. And Torrey kind
- 2:55Speaker 3: of defended him on that as well. And post game, uh,
- 2:59Speaker 3: Cattell made sure to say that he loves the fans,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and I'm sure he's eager to win them back over.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Cattell is certainly in a unique situation in that his
- 3:12Speaker 1: English is pretty good. I mean, you and I know
- 3:13Speaker 1: this from talking to him, but obviously it is still
- 3:17Speaker 1: his second language, and today he felt more comfortable using
- 3:21Speaker 1: a translator, which is understandable. You don't want things to
- 3:24Speaker 1: get lost in translation, and It sounds like even that question,
- 3:28Speaker 1: maybe he didn't fully understand. But yeah, certainly that clip
- 3:34Speaker 1: was circulating around Twitter today of him kind of shrugging
- 3:38Speaker 1: off that question and not having an answer. That context
- 3:42Speaker 1: is certainly helpful. I guess when it comes to the
- 3:45Speaker 1: more basic questions that Cattell was asked pregame, we'll go
- 3:48Speaker 1: ahead and dive into that. He was asked simply, can
- 3:51Speaker 1: you just take us through what happened in Boston and
- 3:54Speaker 1: what you were feeling, what kept you from coming to
- 3:56Speaker 1: the ballpark that night? Cattell said, a moment of frustration.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I'm the type of person that when something's going on
- 4:03Speaker 1: in my life, I don't like to talk about it.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So that's kind of what was going on. And then
- 4:08Speaker 1: a follow-up to that, somebody asked, was the frustration injury-related
- 4:12Speaker 1: or was it something with Torrey? What was the frustration
- 4:15Speaker 1: specifically about? And Cattell said, I get along really well
- 4:19Speaker 1: with Tory. And in that instance, I failed him by
- 4:22Speaker 1: not showing up. That morning I woke up, my body
- 4:25Speaker 1: was in pain. No one made the decision for me.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I'm the one that made the decision to not show up. So,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you know, I'm not, I'm not going to say Jack
- 4:35Speaker 1: that Cattell has like won a bunch of fans back
- 4:38Speaker 1: over or whatnot. I'm not sure any of his answers
- 4:41Speaker 1: were you know, exactly what fans were like hoping and
- 4:46Speaker 1: praying he would say, but, but this is a difficult
- 4:49Speaker 1: spot for him to walk into. And it seems like
- 4:53Speaker 1: he said enough of the right things, I guess the family,
- 4:56Speaker 1: he used the word fail to describe his behavior that day.
- 5:00Speaker 1: He seemed to take responsibility. He, he did apologize to
- 5:04Speaker 1: the team from what we know, even though it sounds
- 5:06Speaker 1: like that was a pretty brief conversation.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yeah. In the first comment, um, There is probably a
- 5:13Speaker 3: little bit of nuance that was lost in that translation.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Not intentionally. Alex Arpiza does a great job. But he
- 5:21Speaker 3: did also kind of add in a phrase which indicated
- 5:24Speaker 3: that it's really been an issue for him in his
- 5:26Speaker 3: whole life being able to express himself in those situations.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So he was kind of acknowledging like this is something
- 5:34Speaker 3: that I struggle with as a person. You know, it
- 5:36Speaker 3: wasn't just in that situation. And, you know, he wasn't
- 5:40Speaker 3: trying to be specific to any one person when he
- 5:43Speaker 3: said he couldn't.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Talk about it.
- 5:45Speaker 3: It kind of initially probably sounded like he was like
- 5:47Speaker 3: dodging the question or just was blowing it off. But
- 5:49Speaker 3: what he was trying to say is he has a
- 5:51Speaker 3: hard time expressing himself when he's going through those types
- 5:54Speaker 3: of emotions. And it's something that he's dealt with his
- 5:56Speaker 3: whole life.
- 5:58Speaker 1: There was also a report that came out today from
- 6:02Speaker 1: our friends over Arizona Sports. This was from our friends
- 6:06Speaker 1: Gambo as well as Alex Weiner. And they kind of
- 6:10Speaker 1: added a piece to the story that had not previously
- 6:13Speaker 1: come out. Apparently, Cattell Marte also had an incident back
- 6:17Speaker 1: in 2023 where he did not show up to the ballpark.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It was specifically on September 24th against the New York Yankees.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I still like kind of have vivid memories of watching
- 6:27Speaker 1: that series because, of course, this was like the final
- 6:31Speaker 1: days of the season as the D-backs were trying to
- 6:33Speaker 1: clinch their playoff spot. I seem to remember the rain
- 6:37Speaker 1: that day just being outrageous and thinking it was kind
- 6:41Speaker 1: of crazy that the game was being played. But it
- 6:43Speaker 1: was September 24th. Like, you don't really have time for
- 6:46Speaker 1: makeup games on the calendar at that point. And they
- 6:49Speaker 1: just went out and decided to play the game anyway. Apparently,
- 6:53Speaker 1: Cattell Marte was not actually ill, which was the news
- 6:57Speaker 1: that came out at the time. According to Arizona Sports,
- 7:01Speaker 1: Cattell believed the game would be postponed like the prior
- 7:04Speaker 1: game on Saturday. and he stayed at the hotel. Every
- 7:09Speaker 1: player on the team showed up despite the potential postponement,
- 7:13Speaker 1: Cattell being the only one who did not. So that
- 7:16Speaker 1: was not a great look, Jack, and it just kind
- 7:19Speaker 1: of speaks to the scope of this issue with Cattell Marte,
- 7:23Speaker 1: where I think the Diamondbacks have kind of been covering
- 7:27Speaker 1: for him for a while. I mean, Tory Lovello has
- 7:31Speaker 1: tried to have Cattell Marte's back a number of times,
- 7:34Speaker 1: and this was another one of those moments.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yeah, believe it or not, I was actually in New
- 7:39Speaker 2: York covering the team in that series. That's right.
- 7:41Speaker 4: That's right.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Tropical storm Ophelia washed out Saturday. So, you know, I
- 7:46Speaker 3: hung out in the city and went to a show
- 7:48Speaker 3: actually that day and ran around Manhattan like a water rat.
- 7:52Speaker 3: And then, you know, they played through the entire rain
- 7:57Speaker 3: on Sunday. They did a makeup game on Monday. So
- 8:01Speaker 3: I do remember Cattell not being in the lineup that day. Um, certainly,
- 8:05Speaker 3: you know, we were never informed. It was never disclosed
- 8:08Speaker 3: to us that he didn't show up to the ballpark
- 8:10Speaker 3: back in, you know, summer of, uh, 23, there was
- 8:13Speaker 3: still a lot of COVID going around. Actually, my wife
- 8:16Speaker 3: was with me and she caught COVID on that trip. Um, so,
- 8:20Speaker 3: you know, it wouldn't have felt all that unusual if
- 8:23Speaker 3: someone was having an illness to stay away from the clubhouse.
- 8:27Speaker 3: This was just, you know, a year plus less than
- 8:30Speaker 3: two years past a lot of the COVID restrictions. So, um,
- 8:35Speaker 3: Nothing really stood out at that time. So it was
- 8:38Speaker 3: a bit of a surprise to see that come out today.
- 8:40Speaker 3: But Tory acknowledged it. He confirmed it and said that
- 8:43Speaker 3: that report was accurate.
- 8:45Speaker 2: So no big secret. He was probably the source.
- 8:51Speaker 4: That's fair.
- 8:53Speaker 1: That wouldn't totally surprise me if that's what was happening
- 8:55Speaker 1: behind the scenes.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I think the other important piece here is Tory spoke
- 9:01Speaker 3: about this whole dynamic of enabling.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Uh, you know, and.
- 9:07Speaker 3: He, he was very blunt and saying, look, I know
- 9:10Speaker 3: everybody wants me to crash down on him.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Um, but every time you do, you do not.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Get, he said, I've tried it before and you don't
- 9:18Speaker 3: get the, the reaction or the result that you, you
- 9:21Speaker 3: think you want to get. Um, so, you know, Sure,
- 9:25Speaker 3: you can say, well, back in 2023 when that happened,
- 9:28Speaker 3: they should have nipped it in the bud right there,
- 9:30Speaker 3: you know, and shouldn't have covered for him. And then
- 9:32Speaker 3: in 2024, you know, if people remember that couple of
- 9:38Speaker 3: days where, you know, Cattell didn't play in that first
- 9:42Speaker 3: game against the Giants when there's six games left, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 3: Torrey initially tried to make it sound like that.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Was his decision.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And then we went and spoke to Cattell and he
- 9:52Speaker 3: kind of let it out of the bag that it
- 9:53Speaker 3: was him that asked for the day off. So, you know,
- 9:56Speaker 3: the manager was trying to cover for him then too.
- 9:59Speaker 3: And then Cattell was the one that outed himself as
- 10:02Speaker 3: the one that made the decision not to play. So,
- 10:05Speaker 3: you know, there was some, some of those types of
- 10:07Speaker 3: moments and God knows what other things had been going
- 10:10Speaker 3: on beforehand, but this is the, the personality and the
- 10:14Speaker 3: player that they have to deal with. And, you know, Torrey,
- 10:19Speaker 3: when I asked him, you know, what we asked him
- 10:21Speaker 3: and then I kind of pressed him on the, on follow-up, um,
- 10:25Speaker 3: whether or not he felt confident that this wasn't going
- 10:27Speaker 3: to happen again.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Like, did he get assurances?
- 10:29Speaker 3: Did he get verbal assurances from Cattell that this won't
- 10:33Speaker 3: happen again? And he answered in the affirmative, but then like,
- 10:36Speaker 3: are you confident that that's actually going to be the
- 10:38Speaker 3: case that this won't happen again?
- 10:40Speaker 2: And he was.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I don't know, you know, and he kind of got
- 10:42Speaker 3: a little a little passive aggressive. And he's like, you know,
- 10:46Speaker 3: I could walk out that door and get hit by
- 10:47Speaker 3: a train. I don't know what's going to happen next. But,
- 10:50Speaker 3: you know, the bottom line is, is it was fairly
- 10:52Speaker 3: clear that he doesn't know what the player is going
- 10:55Speaker 3: to do in the future.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Nobody does.
- 10:58Speaker 3: It's really up to Cattell to have this come to
- 11:01Speaker 3: Jesus moment within himself and realize that he just can't
- 11:05Speaker 3: do this again.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And I'm not sure that he's there.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I think Diamondback's players outside of cattell are probably sick
- 11:15Speaker 1: and tired of talking about this at this point i
- 11:18Speaker 1: mean you would know that better than i am than
- 11:20Speaker 1: i would jack being the the person who's actually in
- 11:23Speaker 1: there on a pretty regular basis brandon fought talked about
- 11:26Speaker 1: it just briefly in his post-game press conference uh he
- 11:29Speaker 1: said he said obviously there's mixed feelings in the room
- 11:34Speaker 1: That was an interesting quote. Fott acknowledged it's not like
- 11:38Speaker 1: everyone in the Diamondbacks clubhouse is like, oh yeah, Cattell's back.
- 11:42Speaker 4: This is great. We're so happy to have him back.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Obviously, there's a little bit more nuance to how the
- 11:48Speaker 1: team is feeling about this right now. But Fott went
- 11:51Speaker 1: on to say that he's glad to have Cattell back
- 11:53Speaker 1: and he hopes he can get on a run and
- 11:56Speaker 1: get hot and help the Diamondbacks make the postseason. And ultimately,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I think... this is kind of where this was always
- 12:03Speaker 1: going to land, right? I mean, making the playoffs could
- 12:07Speaker 1: heal a lot of wounds inside of this clubhouse. And
- 12:11Speaker 1: I think the Diamondbacks understand that their best way of,
- 12:15Speaker 1: their best chance of doing that is with Cattell Marte
- 12:18Speaker 1: in the lineup on an everyday basis. We heard about
- 12:21Speaker 1: this meeting that they had in San Francisco with some
- 12:26Speaker 1: of the core members of the team. Apparently it lasted
- 12:28Speaker 1: about 45 minutes there. where they talked about how they
- 12:31Speaker 1: wanted to approach this situation. And there was a consensus
- 12:34Speaker 1: there that the best chance the D-backs have to make
- 12:38Speaker 1: something of this season is for Cattell Marte to come back.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Does that feel like, as far as you can tell, Jack,
- 12:44Speaker 1: that's kind of where the team is at large right now?
- 12:48Speaker 1: There are mixed feelings, but they also just see the
- 12:51Speaker 1: talent that Cattell has and the role he could play
- 12:54Speaker 1: on this team.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I think there's mixed feelings and the ones whose feelings
- 12:58Speaker 3: are still not satisfied, um, or just want to move
- 13:03Speaker 3: on anyway.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I mean, I spoke to one player, um, you know,
- 13:07Speaker 3: under the condition of anonymity and he was less than, um,
- 13:12Speaker 3: enthusiastic in his, uh, explanation of how the, that meeting,
- 13:16Speaker 3: when he felt it was a little short and he
- 13:18Speaker 3: felt like the, the apology itself came up short. Um,
- 13:22Speaker 3: but you know, that was one man's opinion, um, you know,
- 13:26Speaker 3: and kind of just ended up with a, it is
- 13:28Speaker 3: what it is type of, commentary towards the end and
- 13:32Speaker 3: a shrug. And it's just like, okay, well, we just
- 13:34Speaker 3: got to keep going and move on. Um, so I
- 13:38Speaker 3: think that's, you know, that's why I kind of highlighted
- 13:41Speaker 3: Tori's response to, is this resolved?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Like, are you assured that this isn't going to happen again?
- 13:47Speaker 3: And, uh, you know, it really, really can't. I mean,
- 13:50Speaker 3: it's just that simple. If it happens again, I mean,
- 13:53Speaker 3: he's looking at a lengthy suspension and fines. And, you know,
- 13:57Speaker 3: I don't know what they would do, but there's no
- 13:59Speaker 3: way that this could ever happen again after this event
- 14:02Speaker 3: and not have very serious consequences. You know, as much
- 14:06Speaker 3: as the D-backs would loathe to be pushed into that
- 14:10Speaker 3: corner and have to do that, that's where it's going
- 14:13Speaker 3: to be.
- 14:13Speaker 2: So, you know, it really can't happen again. This is it.
- 14:16Speaker 2: The red line's been crossed already. There is no more
- 14:20Speaker 2: crossing it again.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, uh, hard to, hard to argue with that
- 14:26Speaker 1: at this point. Uh, our good friend, Bob Nightingale over
- 14:29Speaker 1: at USA Today, he wrote about Cattell Marte in his
- 14:32Speaker 1: Sunday column and, uh, it, it was fairly scathing. Uh, there,
- 14:38Speaker 1: there were a lot more details in there on this.
- 14:40Speaker 1: He had a quote, uh, from a Diamondbacks player on
- 14:43Speaker 1: the condition of anonymity. Um, that player said, I've never
- 14:46Speaker 1: seen anything like it in terms of how the Diamondbacks
- 14:49Speaker 1: have dealt with, with Cattell Marte. Uh, And yeah, if
- 14:54Speaker 1: any player in that clubhouse is not real satisfied right now,
- 14:58Speaker 1: you can certainly understand why. On the field, Quetel Marte
- 15:04Speaker 1: had a decent game. He went one for three with
- 15:07Speaker 1: a walk. He hit a single in the eighth inning.
- 15:10Speaker 1: It looked like the D-backs were maybe going to mount
- 15:12Speaker 1: some kind of comeback there against Jose Alvarado. One of
- 15:16Speaker 1: several times, many times throughout the game where it looked
- 15:18Speaker 1: like they were going to maybe mount some sort of
- 15:21Speaker 1: comeback and it never materialized. but he did have a
- 15:24Speaker 1: solid opposite field single there. He also drew a walk
- 15:29Speaker 1: in a bigger moment, what felt like a bigger moment
- 15:32Speaker 1: earlier in the game.
- 15:33Speaker 4: So the at-bats were decent, Jack.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Obviously, Cattell was just in there as a DH, but
- 15:39Speaker 1: if anyone was concerned that he wasn't going to be
- 15:41Speaker 1: anything like the player he was before or whatnot, this
- 15:44Speaker 1: looked like a pretty normal day for Cattell Marte on
- 15:47Speaker 1: the field.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's good to see.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Him lay off that curveball and draw that walk in
- 15:51Speaker 3: his third at-bat, and then You know, shooting one, batting right-handed,
- 15:55Speaker 3: shooting one the other way through the hole was good. So,
- 15:57Speaker 3: I mean, I thought the quality of the at-bats were fine.
- 16:02Speaker 3: It would have been really exciting to see him come up,
- 16:04Speaker 3: you know, either with the bases loaded and two outs
- 16:08Speaker 3: or if Gabby had gotten a hit and, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 3: tied it up and then Cattell could drive in a
- 16:13Speaker 3: winning run.
- 16:13Speaker 2: That would have been really fun.
- 16:15Speaker 3: I don't know why I just looked at my score
- 16:17Speaker 3: sheet because the 0 for 9 with 11 left on base,
- 16:20Speaker 3: 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position, with 11
- 16:22Speaker 3: left on bases, seared into my brain. You know, I
- 16:26Speaker 3: just watched it for nine innings and marked down every
- 16:28Speaker 3: one of them.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So that was a little tough to watch. I mean,
- 16:31Speaker 2: this was a very well-pitched game.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Brandon Fott, I mean, just deserves a ton of credit
- 16:36Speaker 3: for getting out of the trouble that he did in
- 16:38Speaker 3: the third inning and going six innings and throwing a
- 16:41Speaker 3: quality start. I jokingly kind of asked him, I said,
- 16:46Speaker 3: does it, like, impact you at all when they go
- 16:48Speaker 3: really deep, or is it the same thing, just over
- 16:50Speaker 3: the walls, over the wall?
- 16:51Speaker 2: And he's He laughed a little bit. He said, no,
- 16:53Speaker 2: it's just one run over the walls, over the wall.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It doesn't really matter.
- 16:57Speaker 3: You know, there's no, it's not like getting posterized in basketball, really.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I mean, you know, ball goes far, big deal.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Next one.
- 17:04Speaker 3: And, you know, so I think he only had like
- 17:07Speaker 3: five whiffs in the game, one strikeout. You know, he
- 17:11Speaker 3: was putting the ball, letting them put the ball in play.
- 17:13Speaker 3: And that's a pretty hard hitting lineup, at least a
- 17:16Speaker 3: few points in it to do that against.
- 17:19Speaker 2: And I thought he was pretty effective. In the bullpen,
- 17:22Speaker 2: Juan Murillo was a bit of an adventure.
- 17:24Speaker 1: 33 pitches is a lot for one inning, but he
- 17:30Speaker 1: managed to make it through.
- 17:32Speaker 4: His 16th consecutive scoreless.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Appearance, so Murillo's been on a nice run lately, even
- 17:38Speaker 1: if today wasn't quite as pretty.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I hated to see him throw, what, 30? You said
- 17:42Speaker 3: 33 pitches? I knew it was over 30. Because that
- 17:46Speaker 3: probably means he's even out for Wednesday. He's definitely not
- 17:50Speaker 3: pitching tomorrow. And Wednesday, which is a day game, a
- 17:54Speaker 3: little questionable whether or not he can bounce back quick
- 17:56Speaker 3: enough for that. So I hated to see him have
- 17:58Speaker 3: to throw that many pitches. Loiseko was good. Kevin Genko
- 18:02Speaker 3: was excellent. So, you know, they had their shot, but
- 18:06Speaker 3: they just weren't able to pull it off. It was
- 18:08Speaker 3: a costly one, right? You know, because you look at
- 18:10Speaker 3: the standings and that half game lead now turns into
- 18:13Speaker 3: a half.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Game deficit thanks to the Padres victory.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll go ahead and take a look there. The
- 18:20Speaker 1: Padres did win over the Cincinnati Reds today. They shut
- 18:24Speaker 1: out the Reds by a final score of 5-0. Diamondbacks,
- 18:27Speaker 1: of course, losing here to Philadelphia. So the two teams
- 18:30Speaker 1: flip-flop once again. The Padres are now 72-64. The D-backs
- 18:33Speaker 1: are not 73-65. Apparently when I pulled this, the standings
- 18:36Speaker 1: have not yet updated. So Apologies for the issue here.
- 18:45Speaker 1: The Diamondbacks, unfortunately, are 73 and 66 and they are
- 18:49Speaker 1: now half a game behind San Diego for that third
- 18:53Speaker 1: wildcard spot. I think this might even be a couple
- 18:56Speaker 1: days old, Jack. I think I think the Phillies have
- 19:00Speaker 1: banked a couple more wins than being 75 and.
- 19:03Speaker 2: And yeah, that's completely wrong.
- 19:05Speaker 1: That's like several days old. So we're just going to
- 19:08Speaker 1: pretend that that was never shown on the screen. But
- 19:11Speaker 1: what we can say is the Diamondbacks are half a
- 19:14Speaker 1: game behind San Diego for that third wildcard spot. They
- 19:17Speaker 1: are 73 and 66 and the Padres are 73 and 65.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So those teams, Jack, every time they flip flop, I
- 19:26Speaker 1: kind of remind myself that they're probably going to flip
- 19:28Speaker 1: flop again and again and again. And, you know, anytime
- 19:32Speaker 1: the D-backs take over the third spot, you're kind of
- 19:34Speaker 1: thinking like, oh, maybe they're going to hold it the
- 19:37Speaker 1: rest of the season. Or on a day like this,
- 19:39Speaker 1: maybe you're wondering like, oh, maybe the Padres are going
- 19:42Speaker 1: to hold the spot the rest of the season. But
- 19:44Speaker 1: deep down, I know that neither of those things is
- 19:48Speaker 1: going to be the case. There's probably lots more flip-flopping
- 19:51Speaker 1: to go here in this final month of the season.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And we are now about to turn the page to
- 19:58Speaker 1: September as we're recording just before midnight here on August 31st.
- 20:05Speaker 1: We're getting close to September baseball. We have more notes
- 20:09Speaker 1: on this game. and some other pregame updates that Jack
- 20:13Speaker 1: got that we'll dive into. I'm sure we'll circle back
- 20:16Speaker 1: to some final thoughts on the Cattell situation as well.
- 20:19Speaker 1: But we're going to hit a quick break, so don't
- 20:21Speaker 1: go anywhere. We'll be right back here on Snakes Territory.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Kratz, I think what people are seeing on the screen
- 20:26Speaker 5: and what we'll explain to the podcast audio crowd right
- 20:29Speaker 5: now is how I'm a little summer action with Fabletics,
- 20:32Speaker 5: and then you take us into fall and a little
- 20:34Speaker 5: more layering.
- 20:36Speaker 6: And here in the East, I'm still going to go
- 20:38Speaker 6: to the shore in the fall. I love the shore
- 20:40Speaker 6: in September. You come in from the beach, you throw
- 20:43Speaker 6: on a sweatshirt like this. It's light, it's breathable, but
- 20:46Speaker 6: you know what? It is so comfortable.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Yeah, and for me, I love working out, but also
- 20:51Speaker 5: I'm getting more into tennis, paddle, a little bit of pickleball,
- 20:55Speaker 5: all that. I want lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and affordable. Let's
- 21:00Speaker 5: talk about that. The discounts for Fabletics are massive when
- 21:04Speaker 5: you sign up as a VIP. Shop now at Fabletics.com
- 21:07Speaker 5: slash foul to get 70 to 80% off everything. When

- 21:43Speaker 1: you're joining us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, it really
- 21:47Speaker 1: helps us out if you would leave a five-star review
- 21:50Speaker 1: over there as well. I'm going to hit a quick
- 21:55Speaker 1: comment here, Jack, relating to the Cattell situation. This comes
- 22:01Speaker 1: from Artharvaro33, I'm probably mispronouncing something there. But they say, honestly,
- 22:08Speaker 1: it makes sense why they were shopping Cattell Marte pretty
- 22:10Speaker 1: hard last offseason. And I'm curious, Jack, how big of
- 22:15Speaker 1: a role do you think these events had? I mean,
- 22:20Speaker 1: we knew that the Diamondbacks were not necessarily like in
- 22:24Speaker 1: love with Cattell Marte as a player, as a teammate.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Certainly that always felt like it was part of the
- 22:31Speaker 1: equation there. But I guess the reporting that we got today,
- 22:36Speaker 1: maybe that problem was more significant and more of a
- 22:39Speaker 1: factor than we realized.
- 22:41Speaker 3: It's really hard for me to get inside the head
- 22:43Speaker 3: of Mike Hazen and his baseball operations group what they
- 22:46Speaker 3: were actually thinking here.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Apparently they had.
- 22:50Speaker 3: A couple of decent offers on the table, but they
- 22:52Speaker 3: just didn't feel like.
- 22:53Speaker 2: It was enough.
- 22:54Speaker 3: And, you know, the words we heard often were the
- 22:57Speaker 3: D-backs were motivated to trade him. But clearly they weren't
- 23:01Speaker 3: motivated enough because they didn't.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:05Speaker 3: You know, and we don't know what offers they were
- 23:08Speaker 3: given for him. I mean, maybe, you know, look, I
- 23:11Speaker 3: don't think that the problems with him are all that
- 23:14Speaker 3: much of an inside industry secret.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Right?
- 23:19Speaker 3: You know, like everybody knows what happened last year at
- 23:22Speaker 3: the All-Star break. Nobody thought that was kosher. And the
- 23:27Speaker 3: criticisms internally in Major League Baseball were certainly fairly pointed
- 23:35Speaker 3: towards Cattell and towards this organization, apparently. So it's not
- 23:40Speaker 3: a shock that they weren't able to get the offers
- 23:42Speaker 3: that they needed. So they weren't desperate to unload him.
- 23:49Speaker 3: I mean, let's not forget, they extended him in April
- 23:52Speaker 3: of 2025. And they had the 2023 and 2024 experiences
- 23:58Speaker 3: and other things before that that we don't even know about.
- 24:02Speaker 2: You know, so.
- 24:05Speaker 3: None of that motivated them enough to just get rid
- 24:09Speaker 3: of them, you know, for even 70 cents on a
- 24:11Speaker 3: dollar or whatever. You know, apparently they could have had
- 24:14Speaker 3: Peyton Tolley and Franklin Arias for Cattell Marte in hindsight's 2020.
- 24:19Speaker 2: That would be a pretty sweet deal. Yeah.
- 24:22Speaker 3: But at the same time, look, we don't know. We
- 24:25Speaker 3: just don't know what offers are actually on the table.
- 24:29Speaker 3: But what we do know is whatever they were did
- 24:31Speaker 3: not motivate the D-backs. So they clearly weren't desperate to
- 24:33Speaker 3: move him at any price, at any cost. They may
- 24:38Speaker 3: end up in that situation this offseason, but 10 times harder.
- 24:43Speaker 2: To move him.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Because not only has further issues come up, but his
- 24:50Speaker 3: production has waned.
- 24:51Speaker 2: And he's going to be 33 next year.
- 24:53Speaker 3: So, um, you know, the, the, the window to move
- 24:56Speaker 3: him and get really much of anything of substance in
- 24:59Speaker 3: return has, uh, you know, not shut, but it's very
- 25:03Speaker 3: much narrowed.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I mean, I, I think at this point you just
- 25:08Speaker 1: have to weigh like to, to what extent has Cattell
- 25:12Speaker 1: damaged his relationships with his teammates and the organization at large?
- 25:16Speaker 1: Do you do you have to consider moving him for
- 25:20Speaker 1: 20 or 30 cents on the dollar at this point
- 25:22Speaker 1: just to move on and kind of turn the page
- 25:25Speaker 1: from what's been a pretty ugly situation? I know some
- 25:29Speaker 1: national outlets have speculated like, oh, this is probably it
- 25:33Speaker 1: for Cattell Marte as a member of the Diamondbacks. I
- 25:35Speaker 1: don't know if that's necessarily the case, but it's definitely
- 25:39Speaker 1: a big question the team is going to have to
- 25:41Speaker 1: face this offseason.
- 25:44Speaker 3: One thing to keep in mind about that, and it's
- 25:48Speaker 3: always easier for a new regime to make those kinds
- 25:50Speaker 3: of moves.
- 25:52Speaker 4: That's true.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I mean, the relationship that Tory Lovello has built with
- 25:58Speaker 1: Cattell Marte over the years and Mike Hazen, obviously, I mean,
- 26:03Speaker 1: it's pretty much the first big move, the first big
- 26:05Speaker 1: acquisition that he made as general manager. Of course, Cattell
- 26:10Speaker 1: was not initially really the viewed as the centerpiece of
- 26:13Speaker 1: that deal. But, He wound up being by far the
- 26:16Speaker 1: most valuable piece the Diamondbacks got in return. I know
- 26:20Speaker 1: you have some other updates, Jack, from being out at
- 26:22Speaker 1: the ballpark today. I guess we'll start maybe with Corbin Burns.
- 26:26Speaker 1: It's been a big topic here in recent days. He,
- 26:29Speaker 1: of course, made a rehab appearance out in Reno on Saturday.
- 26:34Speaker 1: We talked about that in our Saturday show. We kind
- 26:37Speaker 1: of assumed that the D-backs would bring up Corbin Burns
- 26:41Speaker 1: to start against the Astros, at least. It's, it seemed
- 26:45Speaker 1: like the D backs were leaning in that direction, but
- 26:48Speaker 1: maybe not so fast. What did you hear on that today, Jack? Yeah.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I mean, it wasn't explicit. So, you know, the where
- 26:55Speaker 3: and when his next outing will be, um, Torrey could
- 26:59Speaker 3: not say so, you know, every, everything beyond everything that
- 27:02Speaker 3: follows a speculation.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Um, you know, we don't know for sure.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Um, prior to this outing, it, was very much leaning
- 27:11Speaker 3: towards bringing him back to pitch against Houston. But the
- 27:16Speaker 3: way Torrey described it, you know, clearly the velocity loss
- 27:23Speaker 3: was a problem for them. You know, what he said
- 27:26Speaker 3: was every time he throws a pitch, it's shown at 90-91.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Torrey's watching this on closed circuit. It's not the 92-94
- 27:33Speaker 3: that we know he can get to. It's not top-end,
- 27:38Speaker 3: so I know there's some that say yes, and I'm
- 27:40Speaker 3: in that camp that you're building up that overall number,
- 27:43Speaker 3: and it's not the same, but we want that big number,
- 27:46Speaker 3: Lovello said. So I know it's a little tough to
- 27:49Speaker 3: understand what he's saying there, but what he was actually
- 27:52Speaker 3: saying was we want to get it more built up.
- 27:55Speaker 3: And so I think there's a lot of internal discussion
- 27:58Speaker 3: about which way to go here, and I very much
- 28:01Speaker 3: sensed from what Torrey said but I'm not a hundred
- 28:05Speaker 3: percent sure because it's a little tough to parse these
- 28:07Speaker 3: things that, um, he'd like to see, you know, that
- 28:10Speaker 3: velocity bump up a little bit and show.
- 28:12Speaker 2: A little bit more strength. He threw 15 more.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Pitches in a bullpen and Torrey acknowledged that, okay, going
- 28:18Speaker 3: down to the, you know, leaving that half inning and
- 28:20Speaker 3: going down to the pen and, you know, weren't getting
- 28:23Speaker 3: hot again. That was the equivalent of a third up down.
- 28:27Speaker 3: So we threw basically three and 32, um, And I
- 28:32Speaker 3: think he needs to get to at least 4-45, 4-50
- 28:35Speaker 3: before they could even consider bringing him back.
- 28:38Speaker 2: I think they really need to at least see one
- 28:41Speaker 2: more outing. So we'll see what they do with him.
- 28:45Speaker 3: But I made my thoughts pretty clear last time to
- 28:50Speaker 3: bring him back against.
- 28:59Speaker 4: I think we might have lost connection for a second there, Jack. Yeah,
- 29:03Speaker 4: we did. At least I didn't catch the end of
- 29:06Speaker 4: what you said.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked about this the other day.
- 29:08Speaker 3: And what I said was to bring him back after
- 29:13Speaker 3: just two innings of a rehab start with his velocity
- 29:17Speaker 3: down was madness.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I just couldn't see it.
- 29:20Speaker 3: And I kind of get the sense that there's been
- 29:22Speaker 3: a pause here, that they're trying to figure out what's
- 29:25Speaker 3: the best way to go. I think based on what
- 29:28Speaker 3: I'm hearing– I think they're going to slow it, at
- 29:31Speaker 3: least give him one more outing before he comes back.
- 29:34Speaker 2: But I'm not sure.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Well, clearly they just have been listening to the Snakes
- 29:38Speaker 1: Territory podcast.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And felt very compelled by what you said the other day.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I think it's a very compelling case to just think
- 29:49Speaker 1: about the impact that he can realistically make at this point.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I'm not quite as concerned maybe as you were about
- 29:56Speaker 1: him re-injuring something coming back, but even if you set
- 30:00Speaker 1: that completely aside, I mean, four innings and 40, 45
- 30:05Speaker 1: pitches is just not that much. Like even if it's
- 30:07Speaker 1: an awesome 40 or 45 pitches, that's just not going to,
- 30:11Speaker 1: that's not going to really have that big of an
- 30:13Speaker 1: impact on a baseball game. And as you said last time,
- 30:17Speaker 1: you know, maybe you could get similar production out of a,
- 30:19Speaker 1: out of a Mitch Brad or a Jose Cabrera, if
- 30:22Speaker 1: you're just talking about a few innings of work there.
- 30:24Speaker 1: So that's a situation we'll, we'll definitely keep an eye on.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Wouldn't surprise me either if the D-backs decide to wait
- 30:32Speaker 1: a little bit there on Corbin Burns. In other injury news, Jack,
- 30:36Speaker 1: it sounds like Michael Soroka could be back here in
- 30:40Speaker 1: relatively short order. I believe I read from you that
- 30:44Speaker 1: he's about to throw a sim game and then a
- 30:48Speaker 1: rehab outing after that, and then maybe could return around
- 30:52Speaker 1: September 9th, if I'm remembering correctly.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Yeah, Torrey was a little confused about his date, so
- 30:58Speaker 3: I had to go back and take what he said
- 31:00Speaker 3: and look at it against the schedule, and then I
- 31:03Speaker 3: figured out what he meant. But bottom line is he's
- 31:07Speaker 3: been throwing out to 120 feet, and he's throwing a
- 31:09Speaker 3: live bullpen tomorrow, Tuesday, September 1st. Then he's going to
- 31:15Speaker 3: throw a sim game on Friday, September 4th, and he's
- 31:20Speaker 3: eligible to come off the injured list on September 7th.
- 31:23Speaker 3: and he could possibly start as early as September 9th
- 31:26Speaker 3: against the Royals. So basically what Torrey was pointing to
- 31:30Speaker 3: was getting him into a major league game against the
- 31:33Speaker 3: Royals that weekend. So that's, you know, which is days,
- 31:37Speaker 3: he said days 16 to 19. In other words, if
- 31:40Speaker 3: he's on a 15-day IL, you know, so he's got
- 31:43Speaker 3: to wait until he's eligible. So that's what we're looking at.
- 31:46Speaker 3: But again, I would wait and see how things go Friday,
- 31:49Speaker 3: September 4th. what his stuff looks like, how many pitches
- 31:53Speaker 3: he throws and innings he goes. And if that outing
- 31:56Speaker 3: all goes according to plan, then the September 9th against
- 32:00Speaker 3: the Royals is on the table.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that feels like pretty much a best-case
- 32:06Speaker 1: scenario there. Anytime you see a guy go down with
- 32:09Speaker 1: a shoulder thing in late August, you're kind of just like, well,
- 32:13Speaker 1: you might not see that pitcher again the rest of
- 32:15Speaker 1: the way. Doesn't sound like that is the case for Soroka.
- 32:18Speaker 1: D-backs could get him back soon. Another player coming back soon,
- 32:22Speaker 1: it sounds like, Jack, is one Lourdes Gurriel Jr. He's
- 32:26Speaker 1: been on a rehab assignment for, I think, a few
- 32:29Speaker 1: weeks at this point. It's been a little while for him.
- 32:33Speaker 1: And he is expected to be reinstated prior to play tomorrow. D-backs,
- 32:39Speaker 1: of course, will get the extra two roster spots on
- 32:42Speaker 1: September 1st. Sounds like that's going to be Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
- 32:46Speaker 5: And I.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Don't know exactly where Lourdes fits into the roster at
- 32:53Speaker 1: this point, Jack. I wasn't entirely convinced the D-backs were
- 32:57Speaker 1: going to bring him back this season, given the struggles
- 33:01Speaker 1: that he had earlier. But we haven't seen the last
- 33:04Speaker 1: of Lourdes Gurriel Jr. And we'll, I guess, see what
- 33:08Speaker 1: it looks like here in September.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Torrey was fairly straightforward with the expanded
- 33:13Speaker 3: roster tomorrow. There's a very good chance he could be
- 33:15Speaker 3: that player. So, you know, Torrey usually doesn't say something
- 33:19Speaker 3: like that unless it's actually going to happen. So, you know,
- 33:23Speaker 3: they go from 26 to 28. They can add go
- 33:26Speaker 3: up to 14 pitchers. So they're going to add a pitcher.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Not sure who that's going to be just yet. And,
- 33:32Speaker 3: you know, they optioned Jose Fernandez. And like you say, like,
- 33:35Speaker 3: how does this all fit? There's so many outfielders now. And,
- 33:39Speaker 3: you know, I felt like Jose Fernandez had a lot
- 33:42Speaker 3: more utility on this team. to be able to back
- 33:45Speaker 3: up third base and shortstop and even first base if needed. Um,
- 33:50Speaker 3: you know, so I don't feel real comfortable being that
- 33:53Speaker 3: exposed on the infield.
- 33:55Speaker 2: So I don't really quite get this. It's, I mean,
- 33:58Speaker 2: how many outfielders do you need?
- 34:00Speaker 3: Um, yeah, I mean, they've got Lawler and Waldschmidt and, um,
- 34:06Speaker 3: Carol and Barossa and, you know, you've got a new
- 34:10Speaker 3: bar that plays left field and you got Kepler still here. Uh,
- 34:15Speaker 3: what are they going to do with all these outfielders
- 34:16Speaker 3: and where are they going to get them playing time?
- 34:19Speaker 2: It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
- 34:21Speaker 3: But, you know, hey, I'm not the one getting paid
- 34:24Speaker 3: the big bucks, and I'm sure that they have some
- 34:26Speaker 3: reasoning that I haven't been.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Able to wrap my brain around. But I think it's
- 34:31Speaker 2: a mistake to have optioned Fernandez. I just don't know
- 34:34Speaker 2: what else.
- 34:34Speaker 3: I mean, look, they could have DFA'd Kepler, opened up
- 34:38Speaker 3: a 40-man roster spot, gives them more flexibility on which
- 34:42Speaker 3: pitcher they can bring up. because they could always add
- 34:45Speaker 3: a pitcher that's not on the 40-man and give themselves
- 34:49Speaker 3: more coverage on the infield.
- 34:50Speaker 2: But they still needed to make active roster space for Lourdes.
- 34:55Speaker 3: I think it would have been better to do it
- 34:56Speaker 3: via Kepler.
- 34:58Speaker 2: So what that he's left-handed at this point. It doesn't matter.
- 35:00Speaker 2: He's not hitting righties at all.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm in agreement on the Kepler part. I guess
- 35:07Speaker 1: with Gurriel... he can fit in the lineup against a lefty.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Tori said that, uh, that he's, he's going to be,
- 35:15Speaker 1: I think it was maybe Gambo who tweeted out, uh, that,
- 35:18Speaker 1: that Gurriel is going to be facing lefties pretty much exclusively.
- 35:22Speaker 1: And you can fit the pieces together. As long as
- 35:26Speaker 1: Cattell Marte plays second base and not DH, then you
- 35:29Speaker 1: can put Waldschmidt in left and Lawler in center and
- 35:32Speaker 1: still get Gurriel in there at DH. And then I
- 35:35Speaker 1: guess the question just comes down to, um, Would you
- 35:39Speaker 1: rather have Gurriel DH-ing or would you rather have, I guess,
- 35:44Speaker 1: I mean, Ildemar Vargas is maybe part of the conversation there.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Tim Tawa as well.
- 35:51Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I mean, Gabby, of course, can catch most days, but
- 35:55Speaker 1: we have seen him in the DH slot. So against
- 35:58Speaker 1: a lefty, that could pose a challenge. So, yeah, I don't.
- 36:04Speaker 1: really understand it myself. It seems like the diamondbacks just
- 36:08Speaker 1: don't want to let go here. Uh, even though Gurriel
- 36:11Speaker 1: is very likely not returning in, in 2027, we've seen him.
- 36:15Speaker 4: Get hot in the past.
- 36:16Speaker 1: It's not like Gurriel can't carry an offense for, for
- 36:19Speaker 1: a few weeks, but we just have not seen that
- 36:21Speaker 1: version of him at all in 2026.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:23Speaker 3: I mean, you know, it was kind of almost there
- 36:27Speaker 3: for a little bit in August of 25 before he
- 36:31Speaker 3: went down with the knee injury, but, uh, even that
- 36:34Speaker 3: wasn't quite vintage, like, you know, scorching hot Lourdes either.
- 36:38Speaker 2: It was a little, there's a lot of RBIs, but
- 36:41Speaker 2: it was kind of hollow.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:43Speaker 1: He had, I looked up his, his expected numbers against
- 36:46Speaker 1: lefties this season, and he has a two 60 expected
- 36:49Speaker 1: batting average, but just a three 36 expected slugging percentage,
- 36:53Speaker 1: which at that point you're, you're just not, not getting
- 36:56Speaker 1: a whole lot of, a whole lot of value there
- 36:57Speaker 1: from a, from a right-handed bat. It sounds like Tommy
- 37:00Speaker 1: Troy is, is still kind of on the trail. He's
- 37:03Speaker 1: going to continue to play games in Reno for this week,
- 37:06Speaker 1: and then we'll kind of see what happens there.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Are there any other injury updates? Well, there's Zach Gallin.
- 37:13Speaker 5: Sure.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Yeah, what do we got on him?
- 37:15Speaker 3: So Torrey talked about his outing, and Zach went down
- 37:18Speaker 3: to the bullpen and threw another 14 pitches after his
- 37:20Speaker 3: 46-pitch outing on Sunday.
- 37:24Speaker 2: He went in inning and two-thirds. He recorded five outs.
- 37:28Speaker 3: He faced eight batters, so wasn't very efficient, had a
- 37:31Speaker 3: 30-pitch inning in the second. And Torrey said, you know,
- 37:36Speaker 3: as a AAA manager, when you got a rehabbing guy,
- 37:39Speaker 3: you panic when you see the, like, what do I
- 37:41Speaker 3: do here, you know, when the pitch count climbs like that.
- 37:44Speaker 3: So he was appreciative that they got him out of
- 37:47Speaker 3: that inning and let him go finish getting his pitch
- 37:49Speaker 3: count up in the bullpen. So he's going to start again.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I mean, he's still not eligible to come back yet
- 37:57Speaker 3: until the 7th anyway. So, you know, we'll see. I
- 38:02Speaker 3: wasn't very impressed with what we saw there. I mean,
- 38:06Speaker 3: the underlying stuff, just nothing stood out as improved from
- 38:11Speaker 3: what we've seen before. And he wasn't efficient and, you know,
- 38:16Speaker 3: had a difficult time. Like he was five, you know, five,
- 38:19Speaker 3: six pitches a batter. almost six pitches a batter. So
- 38:24Speaker 3: it looked like it was very much, you know, the
- 38:26Speaker 3: Zach we got frustrated watching before he left. And so
- 38:30Speaker 3: you can't really, it's a rehab outing. You can't read
- 38:32Speaker 3: a lot into it. But at the same time, I'd
- 38:35Speaker 3: sure like to see him look a lot sharper than
- 38:38Speaker 3: that before he comes back to the major leagues.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's fair.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Gallen, another arm that you figure you could get something
- 38:47Speaker 1: from down the stretch here, but it's hard to set
- 38:49Speaker 1: the expectations all that high. There's some mention of Ryan
- 38:52Speaker 1: Nelson in the chat, Jack. Has there been any updates there?
- 38:56Speaker 4: Is he still kind of in limbo?
- 38:57Speaker 2: We did not get an update on Ryan today.
- 38:59Speaker 3: So for sure at the latest, we'll have one by
- 39:01Speaker 3: Wednesday because our guy Alex Daggs will be here. So
- 39:06Speaker 3: we'll see if maybe he comes up tomorrow. If it doesn't,
- 39:09Speaker 3: I know Alex will be asking about that on Wednesday.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Yeah, cool.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Yeah, lots of players that theoretically could still have some
- 39:19Speaker 1: sort of impact for the Diamondbacks here in these final
- 39:22Speaker 1: few weeks. We'll continue to keep an eye on all
- 39:24Speaker 1: of those injury updates. We do want to give a
- 39:27Speaker 1: shout out to Zach real quick. He said, I'll listen tomorrow,
- 39:30Speaker 1: but I wanted to pop in to say hi and
- 39:32Speaker 1: leave a like, and we appreciate you, Zach, for doing that.
- 39:38Speaker 1: So yes, thank you to all of you for being
- 39:40Speaker 1: with us throughout the this edition of Snakes Territory. We
- 39:44Speaker 1: really appreciate your time. You can find us on Twitter.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I am at JesseNFriedman. Jack is at ShoeWizard59. And our
- 39:51Speaker 1: show is at Snakes Territory. And of course, you can
- 39:54Speaker 1: find Jack's written work over at Arizona Diamondbacks on SI
- 39:58Speaker 1: alongside our pal Alex D'Agostino, who does a lot of
- 40:01Speaker 1: great work over there as well. And as Jack said,
- 40:04Speaker 1: he'll actually be out at Chase Field on Wednesday. So
- 40:07Speaker 1: we look forward to getting some more reporting from him Jack,
- 40:11Speaker 1: I know it's been a long day for you and
- 40:13Speaker 1: for me as well. But do you have any final
- 40:16Speaker 1: thoughts here as we say goodbye?
- 40:19Speaker 3: Well, you know, I just hope that the worst is
- 40:22Speaker 3: behind us with all of this and we all get
- 40:25Speaker 3: to move forward.
- 40:27Speaker 2: You know, how many times.
- 40:28Speaker 3: Have you heard me say I'm tired of talking about
- 40:30Speaker 3: all this Cattell drama?
- 40:32Speaker 2: So, you know, we don't cause it. We don't instigate it.
- 40:36Speaker 3: You know, and I don't really want to report on
- 40:38Speaker 3: it anymore. I'd love to talk about baseball and nothing but.
- 40:41Speaker 3: So fingers crossed, that's what happens going forward.
- 40:44Speaker 1: I'm getting way out in front of this, but, but
- 40:47Speaker 1: I will say like looking ahead to the off season
- 40:50Speaker 1: and the potential lockout, I'm kind of dreading what, what
- 40:55Speaker 1: very well could happen, which is that the off season
- 40:58Speaker 1: is dead and no moves are able to be made.
- 41:00Speaker 1: And we're just stuck like speculating about Cattell Marte's future
- 41:04Speaker 1: with the Diamondbacks for months, you know, all the negotiations
- 41:07Speaker 1: are happening. So, Hopefully that doesn't happen. Hopefully I just
- 41:11Speaker 1: reverse jinx that from happening. We don't have to think
- 41:13Speaker 1: about any of those things. Hopefully Ketel Marte is able
- 41:16Speaker 1: to finish out the season strong. He certainly has been
- 41:19Speaker 1: a very valuable member of this organization over the years.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Thank you again to all of you for being with
- 41:25Speaker 1: us on this episode. We really appreciate your time. And
- 41:28Speaker 1: we'll be back with another edition of Snakes Territory very,
- 41:31Speaker 1: very soon.
