- 0:23Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's talk is
- 0:26Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker, Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carley with Let's Talk.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And in the building today we have Hollis Lewis and
- 0:44Speaker 1: Lisa Odie.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Hello, lady and Jen.
- 0:49Speaker 1: This is one of those like really difficult kind of
- 0:53Speaker 1: days when you when you lose two coaches that with
- 1:01Speaker 1: name recognition, Yes, it's kind of crazy, and both of
- 1:09Speaker 1: them really having a lot of success.
- 1:13Speaker 4: They were icons.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I mean you could make the case two
- 1:18Speaker 1: of probably the most notable.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Coaches ever in high school in high school.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm just gonna give a little bit of background
- 1:29Speaker 5: information on what you're referring to, Carl. So, this past week,
- 1:34Speaker 5: we lost, like we said, two of West Virginia coaching
- 1:37Speaker 5: communities icons. The first that we lost on February sixteenth
- 1:42Speaker 5: was coach Roger Jefferson. For those that aren't familiar with
- 1:46Speaker 5: some of his accomplishments, I'll just run over a few
- 1:49Speaker 5: of these. He was a four time state champion coach
- 1:54Speaker 5: who led Charleston High School in nineteen eighty eight to
- 1:57Speaker 5: a state title, and then the following year, when Stonewall
- 2:01Speaker 5: and Charleston High consolidated, the very first team that Capitol fielded,
- 2:07Speaker 5: they won a state title in nineteen eighty nine. So
- 2:11Speaker 5: those were two of his most prolific wins, I would say.
- 2:15Speaker 5: And then of course later on in nineteen ninety one
- 2:17Speaker 5: and nineteen ninety five, he led Capitol High School to
- 2:20Speaker 5: two more titles. So he was also a West Virginia
- 2:23Speaker 5: Sports Writer Coach of the Year overall in nineteen ninety
- 2:27Speaker 5: so very accomplished man. And then a day later, on
- 2:31Speaker 5: February seventeenth, this was within twenty four hours, we lost
- 2:34Speaker 5: coach Scott Tinsley. And he was a man who was
- 2:37Speaker 5: known as being very innovative as an offensive offensive mind.
- 2:43Speaker 5: You know, he notably coached at Saint Aubans GW, and
- 2:48Speaker 5: he also was the offensive coordinator I believe when Jr.
- 2:52Speaker 5: House played at Nitro, and so he led five of
- 2:56Speaker 5: six teams to the playoffs. Both of these gentlemen that
- 3:02Speaker 5: we've lost, you know, our losses for our community. What
- 3:06Speaker 5: are your thoughts, guys?
- 3:07Speaker 1: Well, I speaking of coach Tinsley, I had a pretty
- 3:10Speaker 1: good relationship with Coach Tinsley. He was an innovator of
- 3:15Speaker 1: offensive football. He pretty much, I would say, brought the
- 3:18Speaker 1: air raid system to West Virginia back when you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: in the late nineties when everybody was running the verer
- 3:25Speaker 1: and the options and the wing tea's. He really spread
- 3:28Speaker 1: it open. It had just a prolific offensive you know
- 3:31Speaker 1: football with JR. House and Chris Martin. But I would
- 3:34Speaker 1: also back up he also coached at West Virginia Tech
- 3:37Speaker 1: when he was in Montgomery. He also coached at West
- 3:39Speaker 1: Virginia State. And at West Virginia State he had Ken Grier,
- 3:43Speaker 1: who was a prolific Division two maybe they was in
- 3:46Speaker 1: IAA at that time, but with a prolific quarterback. He
- 3:49Speaker 1: had pretty much held all West Virginia State quarterback records
- 3:53Speaker 1: until recently, you know, the offensive systems caught up.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But just one of those.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Guys who, just like I said, just brought that system
- 4:01Speaker 1: and really pushed the envelope to make West Virginia move
- 4:05Speaker 1: into you know, far as the future, as far as
- 4:08Speaker 1: offensive football is concerned. So and I had a chance
- 4:11Speaker 1: to sit up under him, I learned a lot. He
- 4:12Speaker 1: coached me in the North South game. You know, I
- 4:16Speaker 1: was around when he was at GW. So he was
- 4:18Speaker 1: just like a really you know, offensive mind and just
- 4:22Speaker 1: knew the position well. And I think it's one of
- 4:25Speaker 1: those things when you look back at the history of
- 4:27Speaker 1: West Virginia football, he was I think a turning point
- 4:31Speaker 1: within it, you know, like I said, he just he
- 4:33Speaker 1: pushed it forward. And obviously, you know, Roger Jefferson had
- 4:37Speaker 1: just those prolific Charleston Hine Capitol teams and just had
- 4:41Speaker 1: so much talent that he was able to, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 1: you know, do a lot with that talent that he
- 4:47Speaker 1: had there. And too, I'm going to follow up on
- 4:52Speaker 1: Jefferson like, and I knew him really well, and he
- 5:02Speaker 1: he was that kind of coach that you that you
- 5:05Speaker 1: just would love to play for.
- 5:07Speaker 2: He was just that kind of.
- 5:10Speaker 1: That kind of guy, kind of tough, you know, demanded excellence,
- 5:15Speaker 1: but you it was like one of those kind of
- 5:17Speaker 1: situations where you wanted to give that away to him
- 5:23Speaker 1: and and to me, I think when you take those two,
- 5:29Speaker 1: they're they're they're totally somewhat different. But if you could
- 5:34Speaker 1: take and merge those two together and put put it
- 5:37Speaker 1: into somebody, you would have probably without a question, a
- 5:43Speaker 1: great just the greatest coach ever man, And especially for
- 5:46Speaker 1: high school.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I mean, I just think that there was just there was.
- 5:53Speaker 1: A way that he could take the kids from Charleston
- 5:57Speaker 1: and and and make them play and I won't even
- 6:01Speaker 1: say make made them want to play right and play
- 6:04Speaker 1: and be great.
- 6:06Speaker 5: And to me, whenever I read through this, and I'm
- 6:09Speaker 5: thinking to myself, you know when consolidations happened between schools,
- 6:12Speaker 5: especially rivalries, because I know Stonewall Jackson High School in
- 6:15Speaker 5: Charleston High.
- 6:16Speaker 4: School, they were robberies big time.
- 6:18Speaker 5: And to be able to blend those two team dynamics
- 6:22Speaker 5: and win a state championship the very first year that
- 6:25Speaker 5: they're consolidated together at Capital, to me, that's a feat
- 6:29Speaker 5: that I don't know how often that happens, but it
- 6:32Speaker 5: can happen that often.
- 6:33Speaker 4: I mean, that's pretty amazing.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And I think like one of the things because I
- 6:37Speaker 1: think maybe some people will say, well, he had all
- 6:39Speaker 1: the talent with Trip, he did he had during those
- 6:43Speaker 1: first probably ten years at Capitol. It's probably no more
- 6:45Speaker 1: talent rich team in that era specifically. But I think,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know, you have to be able to manage talent, right,
- 6:53Speaker 1: you have to discipline within the talent. So again, you
- 6:59Speaker 1: had some guys on those teams, some real deal, you
- 7:02Speaker 1: had a lot of NFL guys, a lot of D
- 7:03Speaker 1: one guys, But you still have to have that head
- 7:07Speaker 1: that can manage and and put those pieces together. And yeah,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and I was that's that's a very very valid point.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And and that's the most meaningful piece is because sometimes
- 7:21Speaker 1: people think that talent it's all you need, but talent can.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Be a hassle. Talent. Yeah, you know, if.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You're if you're a coach, and you and you're and
- 7:32Speaker 1: you've got a team full of stars. Every star wants
- 7:36Speaker 1: to be the top star. How do you manage that?
- 7:40Speaker 1: How do you coordinate that and put it into team
- 7:45Speaker 1: and let everybody be able to celebrate the championship. And
- 7:49Speaker 1: some guys are gonna get this, you know, they can
- 7:52Speaker 1: get the top awards and all that kind of stuff,
- 7:54Speaker 1: But we're winning championships. And I think when you can
- 7:57Speaker 1: come together enough to win a championship. I'm okay with
- 8:00Speaker 1: Hollis being the player of the year. You know, I
- 8:03Speaker 1: ain't going to be mad that I didn't get in
- 8:05Speaker 1: the ball enough to get that. And for me, like
- 8:07Speaker 1: a lot of those early teams, those excuse me, those
- 8:09Speaker 1: early Capitol High school teams, they were like sentimental for
- 8:12Speaker 1: me because those were my.
- 8:14Speaker 2: First like football heroes.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Like right, like I played with some of those guys
- 8:18Speaker 1: that were older, like you know, playing with them and
- 8:21Speaker 1: not playing with them, but playing on the same team
- 8:23Speaker 1: in little league football. And then you know, I would
- 8:25Speaker 1: go to Capitol High School football games like and I
- 8:29Speaker 1: was one. You know, when you're young, you have the
- 8:32Speaker 1: game playing, but I would be sitting watching the game
- 8:35Speaker 1: and I can just remember a lot of those guys,
- 8:37Speaker 1: you know, Varyon cunneyham Buster.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Brian and all those guys.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And I remember Bully all those guys just watching them
- 8:43Speaker 1: and those were like, wow, those were superstars to me.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So you know, those those were definitely sentimental times. That
- 8:49Speaker 1: was kind of like my first you know, being up
- 8:52Speaker 1: close and personal. Those I would just remember those. I
- 8:55Speaker 1: have fond memories of those days watching early Capitol High football.
- 8:58Speaker 5: I want to get back to coach town Just for
- 9:00Speaker 5: a minute, guys and you just you've alluded about his
- 9:03Speaker 5: innovative offensive mind and the things that he was able
- 9:07Speaker 5: to accomplish at the high school level with with the offense.
- 9:10Speaker 5: So my question for you both is how does a
- 9:14Speaker 5: coach be able to bring such a prolific offense, such
- 9:19Speaker 5: a such a creative offense and water it down enough
- 9:22Speaker 5: to the high school level where you have it's not
- 9:24Speaker 5: like a collegiate level of talent, because those guys have
- 9:27Speaker 5: played high school ball. They have a fundamental understanding of offense.
- 9:31Speaker 5: But how do you think he was able to mold
- 9:34Speaker 5: those kids to be able to implement the offense he
- 9:37Speaker 5: wanted them to.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I think like that's a good question. Again, he was
- 9:40Speaker 1: in coach Tinsley, he played with a quarterback in sat office.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Then he played he was a quarterback of Appalachian State.
- 9:45Speaker 1: So I think the thing is is like number one,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think you know, you can challenge kids in middle school,
- 9:53Speaker 1: high school, you can challenge them enough where and if
- 9:55Speaker 1: you challenge them, they'll pick it up. But specifically just
- 9:58Speaker 1: going to the nuance how you do it, I think
- 10:00Speaker 1: the verbage is one. So in college, you know it
- 10:04Speaker 1: may take me ten or fifteen seconds to call off
- 10:06Speaker 1: a play because I'm calling off the different signens, I'm calling,
- 10:09Speaker 1: blocking assignments, I'm calling you know, I may be not
- 10:12Speaker 1: I may even call two or three plays at one time. Right,
- 10:15Speaker 1: So the verbiage till you simplify the verbage one. And
- 10:18Speaker 1: then from a quarterback perspective, I think you you start
- 10:23Speaker 1: with like half field reads. You start with whether I'm
- 10:25Speaker 1: reading the right side, the middle or the left, and
- 10:27Speaker 1: then I can, you know, I can start going from
- 10:30Speaker 1: the safety to my read, and I can start eventually
- 10:34Speaker 1: open it up to full reads and then from there,
- 10:37Speaker 1: you know, when you're talking about option routes and different
- 10:40Speaker 1: things of that nature. It's just working. And I used
- 10:43Speaker 1: to love the way they would practice. I mean they
- 10:44Speaker 1: would practice music full blast, so they would turn to
- 10:47Speaker 1: the stadium music, and so they have practice in loud,
- 10:50Speaker 1: noisy environments and you and like you could just tell
- 10:54Speaker 1: like playing against them, because I played against j R.
- 10:57Speaker 1: House and those Nightel teams off my high school years,
- 11:01Speaker 1: and they were just so far as head they were
- 11:03Speaker 1: making calls on the field. He had to hand signals
- 11:06Speaker 1: flowing when a lot of teams were still running players
- 11:08Speaker 1: in and out. So it was just like like I said,
- 11:11Speaker 1: if you put it in front of them, they'll pick
- 11:13Speaker 1: it up. I think sometimes we underestimate kids. And I
- 11:16Speaker 1: one hundred percent agree on all of that, Hollis. And
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'll add to it's it's teaching, and call it teaching,
- 11:26Speaker 1: call it coaching. He had the ability to be able
- 11:31Speaker 1: to talk that verbiage to the kids so where they
- 11:36Speaker 1: could get it.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Sometimes coaches can. You can.
- 11:40Speaker 1: You can over coach to a to a degree, and
- 11:43Speaker 1: they don't understand, you know, and until you tell them
- 11:48Speaker 1: in a way that they can understand it, like it's like,
- 11:50Speaker 1: oh the light's on, I get that. And then and
- 11:54Speaker 1: think about that from a and Hollis, you you know
- 11:57Speaker 1: this way better than I do. When you can talk
- 12:00Speaker 1: to your quarterback and you can talk to him with
- 12:03Speaker 1: that kind of language that you because you're not talking
- 12:07Speaker 1: to him trying to get him to understand what you're saying.
- 12:09Speaker 1: You're giving him the burbies that that you know.
- 12:12Speaker 2: In your head.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And now what you've done is you've taught him. He's
- 12:16Speaker 1: hearing that. He can see that in his head. So
- 12:19Speaker 1: now when he's running out on the field with that call,
- 12:22Speaker 1: he's going to be out there.
- 12:24Speaker 2: He already knows.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And plus, man, I mean you got to understand during
- 12:28Speaker 1: the mid nineties, and again this is something he did
- 12:30Speaker 1: at State earlier, but I'm just talking about bringing it
- 12:32Speaker 1: to high school. In the mid nineties, everybody in the
- 12:35Speaker 1: MAMAS is run based office. So you're running a veer,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you're running an option, you're running somethings, still running wishbones
- 12:42Speaker 1: or wing teeth.
- 12:43Speaker 2: That's what everybody was running.
- 12:45Speaker 1: So I couldn't I mean, those kids, man, you going
- 12:48Speaker 1: up and down the field, You're scoring sixty seventy points
- 12:50Speaker 1: a game. You're moving lightning fast, no huddle, let's not
- 12:53Speaker 1: forget that. That office was so fun to watch. I
- 12:59Speaker 1: couldn't imagine. And as being a quarterback, we were all
- 13:02Speaker 1: envious because we want to throw the ball forty and
- 13:04Speaker 1: fifty times a game with the with the with that many,
- 13:07Speaker 1: with that wide open space. So I would imagine, you know,
- 13:10Speaker 1: if you talk to maybe some of the the former players,
- 13:13Speaker 1: they would they probably just had a ball running at all.
- 13:15Speaker 1: And I bet you if you look, if you find
- 13:17Speaker 1: a player who played against those teams, they're like, because again,
- 13:24Speaker 1: you know, if I'm a corner in at during that time,
- 13:29Speaker 1: what am I thinking about run?
- 13:30Speaker 2: I'm thinking about run, tackling and tackling.
- 13:33Speaker 1: There might be six or seven throws maybe in the game,
- 13:36Speaker 1: but in his system, all of a sudden, I've got
- 13:40Speaker 1: to I gotta change my whole mindset and maybe just
- 13:44Speaker 1: for one game.
- 13:45Speaker 2: And that's how it was.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Yeah, because when he when he changed it, it was
- 13:49Speaker 1: just him. Everybody else is like looking at him, like
- 13:51Speaker 1: thinking he's crazy. But until he started putting up forties
- 13:54Speaker 1: and fifties.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he made everything.
- 13:59Speaker 1: And I'm saying I'm not going to necessarily speak for
- 14:02Speaker 1: the whole state, but I'm saying here in Kanak County,
- 14:04Speaker 1: maybe even the southern hand of the state, he made
- 14:06Speaker 1: everybody like basically change their offense, everybody and everybody, everybody
- 14:09Speaker 1: in defense, so everybody, everybody had to do a different eup.
- 14:13Speaker 1: It was just two It was it was it looked good.
- 14:17Speaker 1: That was the other thing. It looked good, and everybody
- 14:20Speaker 1: loves points.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Okay, well, we wanted to touch that touch in on
- 14:26Speaker 5: that audience, and you know, our condolences to the family,
- 14:29Speaker 5: and they both surely will be missed in the community.
- 14:33Speaker 5: So so guys, let's move on to something that we
- 14:40Speaker 5: just wrapped up yesterday with an exciting finale game Breakfast
- 14:46Speaker 5: Saw Breakfast Hockey. I should say, did you guys watch
- 14:50Speaker 5: the hockey, the men's hockey game yesterday morning?
- 14:53Speaker 2: No? I yeah, I seen.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I had it on and I instantly kind of just
- 15:02Speaker 1: turned away from it. But my history, okay, my history
- 15:07Speaker 1: in in that is I was I was in Minnesota,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and of course you know they they have a hockey team,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and I have I had an agent who was like,
- 15:19Speaker 1: you know, he loved it, and so he wanted to
- 15:22Speaker 1: take me to it. Boy, So I'm like, hockey what, like,
- 15:28Speaker 1: you know what do they score touchdowns in there? And
- 15:34Speaker 1: so I so I go, have you ever been to?
- 15:39Speaker 2: Yes, hockey is phenomenal.
- 15:41Speaker 4: It's I love it. I've been to one and I.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Had never seen guys on just that then, just that's
- 15:51Speaker 1: been metal. Be able to be that athletic on ice.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I'm looking at like, I can't help it.
- 15:59Speaker 2: I'm a DV.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I'm I'm like watching their feet like and I'm like,
- 16:02Speaker 1: what are they doing?
- 16:03Speaker 2: How are they doing that?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Somebody's got to break an ankle or tearing me up
- 16:07Speaker 1: or something.
- 16:08Speaker 2: And it's just.
- 16:10Speaker 5: So athletic and they're not even thinking about large.
- 16:14Speaker 2: They don't even think about it.
- 16:16Speaker 1: They're going backwards, sitting there, going backwards and not even thinking.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And that's the thing, like a lot of sports TV
- 16:22Speaker 1: just doesn't. You can't really capture it on TV. Because
- 16:25Speaker 1: I would say the same thing about soccer, high level soccer,
- 16:27Speaker 1: high level hockey.
- 16:29Speaker 2: You have to baseball. You gotta go.
- 16:32Speaker 1: And if you can go, man, i'm telling you you'll
- 16:35Speaker 1: you'll become a fan. No, I'll challenge you just for
- 16:40Speaker 1: me because I agree with you and all that.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I saw.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I got a chance to see the Twins play. Two
- 16:49Speaker 1: things that I realized me being scared of the ball
- 16:54Speaker 1: was consistent.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I was.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I was as I looked at as I thought about
- 16:59Speaker 1: being a bad I was like.
- 17:00Speaker 4: He just say that out loud.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I'm proud of it. I didn't like.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I didn't like, you know, like when you started moving
- 17:11Speaker 1: up from little league, you know, to I don't know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: ten or eleven. The ball was too fast for me.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I was scared of the ball, that was my thing.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I was scared of the ball as a batter, so
- 17:22Speaker 1: that so I didn't want to bat. I didn't want
- 17:24Speaker 1: to play first base because I didn't want the ball
- 17:26Speaker 1: coming to play. No, because every ball is coming to you.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I didn't want to play third base because you hit
- 17:33Speaker 1: the line drive down there, second and short.
- 17:35Speaker 4: I just didn't want to play.
- 17:36Speaker 6: It sounds like sort of figure out. I can't figure out,
- 17:40Speaker 6: like the Duk Way at best. No, because there's a
- 17:47Speaker 6: chance that they'll hit one there. And if they know
- 17:50Speaker 6: I'm over there and left field, they're hitting there.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 17:53Speaker 1: I just I just was so scared of baseball. And
- 17:55Speaker 1: I had a buddy, Jimmy Harper. This is how I
- 17:59Speaker 1: I mean, I remember the name, got hitting them back.
- 18:02Speaker 1: He was playing for the Tigers, and he got hitting
- 18:05Speaker 1: the back. And after the game he showed me like
- 18:11Speaker 1: like the bruise and hallis I swear I could see
- 18:16Speaker 1: the laces of the ball. I was like, if I
- 18:21Speaker 1: could have asked the coach, if I had enough courage
- 18:23Speaker 1: to ask the coach, do I have to back? Can
- 18:25Speaker 1: I playing not back? I would have man, and I'm
- 18:28Speaker 1: done just running the basis. Just let me run the basis.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Man a running for everybody.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Well, now that Carl's finished his baseball horror story, Uh, Matt,
- 18:39Speaker 5: do we have a clip from the hockey game yesterday.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Look at these guys back on track.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Man, it's wretch track.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Es pokes her rider Paul, but I faced with lumpers,
- 18:53Speaker 1: walk a coss of coppers.
- 18:55Speaker 6: Jack Hugh sweat check the gold and gone for the
- 18:58Speaker 6: darned States.
- 19:02Speaker 2: For the first time. Ship stuff gad Doc in the
- 19:06Speaker 2: gut of States takes the goal.
- 19:09Speaker 5: You see what you guys missed. I was in my pajamas.
- 19:17Speaker 5: I watched the whole thing and it was it was exciting.
- 19:19Speaker 2: And the women won too, right, so we doubled up.
- 19:22Speaker 2: So this is his story.
- 19:23Speaker 4: It was the first.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's history. Yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 1: So it's it's like like I said, the Winter Olympics
- 19:28Speaker 1: was fun, and you know, like I said, I'm proud
- 19:31Speaker 1: of the USA. This is the first time in a
- 19:33Speaker 1: long time. So it's a good day.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And then it's doesn't it kind of show that.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Sports as a whole, I'm gonna say in the United States,
- 19:43Speaker 1: because this is where we are, it's just getting better
- 19:46Speaker 1: in everywhere, you know, every sport. The talent level is
- 19:50Speaker 1: just getting better and better and better year after year
- 19:54Speaker 1: after year.
- 19:55Speaker 4: You know, I mean, we earned let's see the gold medals.
- 19:58Speaker 5: I think this time the count this was the best
- 20:01Speaker 5: ever performance at the Winter Olympics with I think it
- 20:04Speaker 5: was twelve gold medals.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Who was the lead Norway?
- 20:07Speaker 5: Norway dominated with eighteen, so we weren't too far off
- 20:10Speaker 5: the lead.
- 20:11Speaker 2: How about overall?
- 20:13Speaker 5: Don't know that, but I do know what's so, oh sorry,
- 20:17Speaker 5: thirty three overall? Yeah, so you know that that oh
- 20:21Speaker 5: total metal count.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Sorry about that.
- 20:23Speaker 5: I read it wrong, man, Thank you for correcting me.
- 20:24Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean that's that's not that's not bad.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah, we did well.
- 20:28Speaker 1: And like I said, those Olympic sports, man, I mean
- 20:30Speaker 1: I was watching the like the Bob sledyon, I was
- 20:33Speaker 1: watching the slalom, like when you're going down the hill,
- 20:36Speaker 1: going around the flags. It was just, man, I'm telling
- 20:40Speaker 1: you just when you talk about like that, just different
- 20:42Speaker 1: level of athleticism, and it's like I always appreciate that,
- 20:46Speaker 1: whether you know it's curling or whatever, figure skating or
- 20:49Speaker 1: whatever the sport is, Like I just appreciate just that
- 20:52Speaker 1: different athleticism. And so one of those things I wish
- 20:56Speaker 1: like we would have to just have the chance to
- 20:57Speaker 1: see it more, you know what I mean, Like just
- 21:00Speaker 1: have the chance.
- 21:00Speaker 2: To like go and like actually witnesses and I like that.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I like that.
- 21:04Speaker 1: You said that because to to truly appreciate what that
- 21:09Speaker 1: skill set is is to be Yeah, it's way different
- 21:14Speaker 1: in person. And you know that's why everybody kind of
- 21:16Speaker 1: knows football, basketball and all those kind of things. But man,
- 21:22Speaker 1: you know some some of those Olympic sports is Man,
- 21:26Speaker 1: it's it's it takes you.
- 21:28Speaker 2: It's got to be a.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Ton of work and it's and some of that, and
- 21:32Speaker 1: you got to be fearless and some of those what's
- 21:35Speaker 1: de luge, like you got to be fearless, the the
- 21:38Speaker 1: like going down to halfpipe doing a snowboarding thing like
- 21:41Speaker 1: you like, not only do you have to have athleticism
- 21:44Speaker 1: skills set, it's got to be like a certain level
- 21:46Speaker 1: of fear fearlessness because because if you if you do
- 21:50Speaker 1: you're coming down skin and you fall going eighty Yes,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I'm not thinking about going going back up to the
- 21:59Speaker 1: top and do it that again. That just like you
- 22:02Speaker 1: got to be so comfortable in yourself that you're saying, Okay,
- 22:06Speaker 1: well this happened. That's why I fail. But you know,
- 22:08Speaker 1: so I'm done with that and then to go back
- 22:10Speaker 1: and let me do it again. I don't think I
- 22:13Speaker 1: got that in me.
- 22:15Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's a that's a whole different drive
- 22:17Speaker 5: to me. I mean, you you not only have to
- 22:19Speaker 5: be dedicated athletically and mentally, but you have to just
- 22:23Speaker 5: like you said, no fear, you have to go out there.
- 22:26Speaker 1: And just how do you get there in a sport
- 22:28Speaker 1: where you may not like you're not probably gonna make
- 22:30Speaker 1: millions just from doing a sport, right you want to medal?
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you want to medal.
- 22:34Speaker 1: You might get some money off endorsements, but you're not
- 22:36Speaker 1: going to be like this like a football basketball player.
- 22:39Speaker 1: You're not going to be ultra wealthy, you know, just
- 22:41Speaker 1: playing a sport and you're and you're doing this every
- 22:44Speaker 1: four years, yeah, you know you. I mean the goal
- 22:47Speaker 1: is is every four years you might be competing world
- 22:51Speaker 1: World Championships and all that kind of stuff. But like
- 22:56Speaker 1: to me, I always kind of wonder, like when is
- 22:59Speaker 1: it that you know that that's where you are, Like
- 23:04Speaker 1: you're you're in the I know that what the clock
- 23:06Speaker 1: says and all that kind of stuff, but man, building
- 23:09Speaker 1: to that, like how do you like, how do you.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Actually build yourself to Olympic gold?
- 23:15Speaker 5: I mean you have to train the whole time between Olympics.
- 23:19Speaker 5: I would think and and then that goes back to
- 23:21Speaker 5: your point, Hollis. I mean, financially, you have to have sponsors,
- 23:24Speaker 5: you have to have people that are picking up the
- 23:26Speaker 5: tab in order for you to train. You're not making
- 23:28Speaker 5: any money for personal gain at that point. You're just
- 23:31Speaker 5: trying to get ready for the Olympics to win possibly
- 23:34Speaker 5: a medal. So it's not financial, financially lucrative.
- 23:38Speaker 1: And how would hit you if you win? You might
- 23:41Speaker 1: get some you might get some endorsements.
- 23:42Speaker 4: And all that kind of stuff, but not in training.
- 23:44Speaker 5: But not in training, And that's four years and then
- 23:48Speaker 5: and then you think about the fear part, did you
- 23:50Speaker 5: I mean, Lindsay is it Lindsay what's her name, Lindsey Vonn, Sorry,
- 23:55Speaker 5: Lindsay Vaughn. Uh, it came out, uh just recently in
- 23:58Speaker 5: the past day or so, that that when she broke
- 24:01Speaker 5: her leg in that accident, it was catastrophic, she almost
- 24:04Speaker 5: lost her leg. They almost had to amputate her leg.
- 24:07Speaker 5: So that those details are coming out out, So that
- 24:09Speaker 5: just proves your point that you know, anything can happen.
- 24:12Speaker 5: I mean, these these are very dangerous sports a lot
- 24:14Speaker 5: of these athletes participate.
- 24:15Speaker 1: In and and I don't even make the case it's
- 24:18Speaker 1: the speed. Yes, it's the speed of all of the
- 24:22Speaker 1: all of those things. And whether or not you are
- 24:26Speaker 1: falling right or coming off of a sled. It you're
- 24:32Speaker 1: at like a top speed with nothing around you, nothing
- 24:36Speaker 1: to catch you, just you, you mean, and the and
- 24:40Speaker 1: the con and and i'most say, concrete snow and you're
- 24:46Speaker 1: falling on that You're I I mean to me, that
- 24:50Speaker 1: is ununimaginable for me, Like I couldn't if I feel
- 24:54Speaker 1: one time came off a sled one time. Man, I'm like, hey,
- 24:57Speaker 1: this is probably not me. I'm probably not I'm probably
- 25:00Speaker 1: not the guy for this.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Back to the football stadium. Well that was that was
- 25:09Speaker 5: a great story, the story of the hockey team. There
- 25:12Speaker 5: were also some other stories, you know, some were kind
- 25:15Speaker 5: of controversial. So I wanted to bring one up that
- 25:17Speaker 5: that's sort of controversial, and I have a clip for
- 25:20Speaker 5: that too.
- 25:21Speaker 4: Can you can you play that clip?
- 25:22Speaker 2: Mat?
- 25:23Speaker 1: Also, do you see these as two silvers gained or
- 25:26Speaker 1: two goals lost?
- 25:29Speaker 7: I'm the most decorated free skier, female free skier in history.
- 25:32Speaker 7: I think that's an answer in and of itself. How
- 25:36Speaker 7: do I say this? Winning a medal at the Olympics
- 25:40Speaker 7: is a life changing experience for every athlete. Doing it
- 25:43Speaker 7: five times is exponentially harder because every medal is equally
- 25:47Speaker 7: hard for me, but everybody else's expectations rise, right, and
- 25:50Speaker 7: so the two medals lost situation, to be quite frank
- 25:55Speaker 7: with you, I think is kind of a ridiculous perspective
- 25:57Speaker 7: to take. I'm showcasing my best I'm doing things that
- 26:02Speaker 7: quite literally have never been done before, and so I
- 26:04Speaker 7: think that is more than good enough.
- 26:06Speaker 5: But okay, So the voice you just heard that was
- 26:10Speaker 5: freestyle skier Ailien Goo, and she obviously is a very confident,
- 26:18Speaker 5: very confident lady. The reason I played the clip, I
- 26:21Speaker 5: mean there's been talk about, you know, of course, the
- 26:24Speaker 5: way that she handles the press. She is very straightforward.
- 26:27Speaker 5: She's very comfortable in her own skin, so to speak,
- 26:31Speaker 5: and sometimes her attitude comes across a little a little
- 26:35Speaker 5: abrasive when she's addressed in the media. But the reason
- 26:38Speaker 5: that we're going to talk a little more deeply about
- 26:41Speaker 5: her is because of she is not she was not
- 26:45Speaker 5: an athlete competing for the United States, although she was.
- 26:50Speaker 4: She was she was born here.
- 26:53Speaker 5: She her mom was born in Beijing, and she at
- 26:59Speaker 5: age fifteen decided to represent China instead of the United States. Okay,
- 27:03Speaker 5: so this has been a this has been a back
- 27:05Speaker 5: and forth issue, and I wanted your thoughts on the
- 27:07Speaker 5: fact that she decided to represent China instead of the US.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Okay, before before that, before that, I want to I
- 27:15Speaker 1: want to comment on her.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Her conversation.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Okay.
- 27:22Speaker 2: One of the things that.
- 27:25Speaker 1: And and Ill you are you sterling as an example, Oh,
- 27:28Speaker 1: somebody like that who when you hear her say all
- 27:33Speaker 1: the things that she's saying, it comes across naturally instantly arrogant.
- 27:39Speaker 2: But when you when you are, when when you know,
- 27:44Speaker 2: when you.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Know that you are that person, You've won medals, You've
- 27:49Speaker 1: won gold medals, you've scored a ton of touchdowns, you've
- 27:52Speaker 1: been considered one of the best receivers ever in the league.
- 27:55Speaker 1: When you get when that shows up, there's not an
- 27:58Speaker 1: opportunity for you to ever talked down. Like if somebody's
- 28:02Speaker 1: asking a question, there's never gonna be a chance you're
- 28:05Speaker 1: gonna make You're gonna try to make the case that
- 28:08Speaker 1: I'm not good enough. You're gonna make the case to
- 28:11Speaker 1: say how good you actually are. And I think I
- 28:15Speaker 1: think I wanted to put that out there because I
- 28:18Speaker 1: wanted to make because at the end of the day,
- 28:21Speaker 1: when you know you're great, how do you do?
- 28:24Speaker 2: How do you talk? You can't talk?
- 28:25Speaker 1: Your listen man, that was a ridiculous question, and she
- 28:30Speaker 1: responded appropriately.
- 28:32Speaker 8: I think, well, you know what she did after that,
- 28:34Speaker 8: she got the gold medal on the halfpipe, because that
- 28:39Speaker 8: question all took place before that.
- 28:41Speaker 1: And it's a ridiculous question, like you literally just won
- 28:44Speaker 1: two silver medals in the Olympics. That means for this
- 28:49Speaker 1: period of time, you are the second best to do
- 28:52Speaker 1: this in the world, not in a country, not in
- 28:56Speaker 1: a sport, and for somebody just to ask, like for
- 28:59Speaker 1: him to even ask that question, and I thought her
- 29:01Speaker 1: response was more than appropriate. To me, it didn't come
- 29:04Speaker 1: off arrogant, it didn't come off cocky. It came on
- 29:07Speaker 1: somebody like, that's a ridiculous question. That's a ridiculous statement.
- 29:10Speaker 1: But I think a lot of people, a lot of
- 29:12Speaker 1: people want they want a humble winner.
- 29:16Speaker 3: That was.
- 29:17Speaker 1: To me hearing that, I felt like, to me, I'm like,
- 29:21Speaker 1: she's saying exactly what she's supposed to say. And as
- 29:23Speaker 1: far as her representing Japan China, as far as her
- 29:27Speaker 1: representing China, man, I don't have no problem with that.
- 29:30Speaker 1: We got athletes on the United States, whether it's the
- 29:34Speaker 1: Summer Olympics, whether it's Winter Olympics. We got athletes from
- 29:37Speaker 1: all around the world literally, So wherever you want to represent,
- 29:41Speaker 1: I mean again, we would love to have you, obviously
- 29:43Speaker 1: because you're one of the best and you want to
- 29:45Speaker 1: go medals. But if again, it's not like she's she
- 29:49Speaker 1: has ties over there, her mother's from there, so it's
- 29:52Speaker 1: not as though she probably had dual citizenships and everything
- 29:55Speaker 1: like that.
- 29:56Speaker 4: So live here.
- 29:57Speaker 5: She lives in the United States, She studies at Stanford,
- 30:01Speaker 5: she trains here.
- 30:02Speaker 2: No problem, I don't have a problem. Well, I kind
- 30:05Speaker 2: of feel like I kind of feel like, if you're here,
- 30:08Speaker 2: what would what would what? My question would me, why
- 30:10Speaker 2: would you? Then?
- 30:11Speaker 1: If you're here and you're getting all your training here,
- 30:14Speaker 1: you're going to school here, you're doing all that here,
- 30:17Speaker 1: it's just hard for me to imagine you not wanting
- 30:20Speaker 1: to represent where you are.
- 30:21Speaker 8: But that's I know a couple of reasons. Why, well
- 30:23Speaker 8: about seven million of them.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, it's being compensated. Well.
- 30:29Speaker 8: She is the fourth highest paid female athlete in the world,
- 30:33Speaker 8: regardless of sports. China is paying her seven million dollars
- 30:37Speaker 8: a year to compete.
- 30:39Speaker 1: That's a question answer.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Made last year.
- 30:44Speaker 8: Yeah, you said how much twenty three millions she made
- 30:47Speaker 8: last year.
- 30:47Speaker 5: Some models, she's a very multip type. Yeah, she's very
- 30:53Speaker 5: young too.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Answer.
- 30:56Speaker 5: I don't have a problem with her, with her the
- 30:58Speaker 5: way she answered or handled the presses as well. I mean,
- 31:01Speaker 5: if you can you know, if you can walk the walk,
- 31:03Speaker 5: you can talk the talk. I mean, you can back
- 31:05Speaker 5: up what you what you say. I don't have a
- 31:07Speaker 5: problem with it at all. And the fact you know
- 31:09Speaker 5: that she's got ties to China through through her mother,
- 31:12Speaker 5: and you know, when she was younger, she she spent
- 31:14Speaker 5: a lot of time there in the country, and you know,
- 31:17Speaker 5: so that's.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Where I'm at long as you got a tie there.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Now, if she was born American, just America, and she
- 31:24Speaker 1: just and she just went over there just for the money,
- 31:26Speaker 1: that's when I would have a problem with it. But
- 31:28Speaker 1: like I said, she probably has some citizenship situation because
- 31:31Speaker 1: her mom is from there, So no problem. And just
- 31:34Speaker 1: going back briefly, we can move on. Yeah, I just
- 31:37Speaker 1: when when the initial clip that you played when he
- 31:41Speaker 1: had I think that's just a problem with the media
- 31:44Speaker 1: such a ridiculous question, like why would you ask somebody
- 31:48Speaker 1: that who just want a silver metal? And like like
- 31:51Speaker 1: we just articulated these very difficult winter sports to take
- 31:55Speaker 1: immense skill in training and concentration, and you're not going
- 31:58Speaker 1: to get that claim at Leasta and you states like
- 32:00Speaker 1: you would have maybe other places. So for us kind
- 32:05Speaker 1: of being in the media, I would I would say
- 32:11Speaker 1: that you know, when you sit around and you're trying
- 32:15Speaker 1: to figure out what is the what is the appropriate
- 32:17Speaker 1: question or what is the right question that that I
- 32:21Speaker 1: think is going to get the best response for me.
- 32:25Speaker 2: When you come up with that.
- 32:28Speaker 1: That to him must have been a question like he thought, oh,
- 32:31Speaker 1: this will force out a certain type of finanswer.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Okay, maybe you.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Know he wanted he wanted he wanted this discussion. You know,
- 32:41Speaker 1: he wanted to have he wanted folks to have this
- 32:43Speaker 1: this conversation.
- 32:44Speaker 2: But maybe he did his job.
- 32:47Speaker 5: I mean she did say whenever this was her. She
- 32:50Speaker 5: also was a part of the twenty twenty two Beijing
- 32:52Speaker 5: Olympic Games, which is you know, that's where my mother
- 32:55Speaker 5: was from. So that's when she joined the team, you know,
- 32:58Speaker 5: the China team. But but when she did join this
- 33:01Speaker 5: was the quote, and then we can move on, guys.
- 33:02Speaker 5: But she she basically said, the opportunity to help inspire
- 33:06Speaker 5: millions of young people where my mom was born during
- 33:10Speaker 5: the twenty twenty two Beijing Olympic Games is one. Is
- 33:13Speaker 5: they once in a lifetime opportunity with million dollars with
- 33:17Speaker 5: twenty Yeah, well that's that's.
- 33:19Speaker 4: A good point as well.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Gosh, okay, well we can wrap up the conversation of Olympics.
- 33:32Speaker 5: This is more of an inspirational type of type of
- 33:36Speaker 5: angle when we're looking at the Winter Olympics and we're
- 33:39Speaker 5: going to talk about and you guys have probably heard
- 33:41Speaker 5: of her. It was the women's uh figure skating women's
- 33:47Speaker 5: single figure skating event and the athlete's name is Alissa Liu,
- 33:52Speaker 5: and she won gold and it was historic. Now she
- 33:56Speaker 5: also has ties to China, but she is a part
- 33:59Speaker 5: of the United States Olympic team. Okay, so there's been
- 34:02Speaker 5: some comparisons between her and the other young lady we
- 34:07Speaker 5: spoke of. But anyway, so she made history. She was
- 34:11Speaker 5: the first American woman to win an individual Olympic gold
- 34:14Speaker 5: in twenty four years. So that's pretty impressive, right. She
- 34:18Speaker 5: took a retirement this was the big conversation, and I
- 34:21Speaker 5: want this is the part I really want you guys
- 34:23Speaker 5: to focus on. So she took retirement, a two year
- 34:26Speaker 5: retirement after she was a teenage sensation, but then she
- 34:30Speaker 5: came back to be a part of this Olympic team
- 34:33Speaker 5: with an ultimatum. She wanted complete control, artistic control of
- 34:40Speaker 5: her show. She wanted to be able to pick out
- 34:42Speaker 5: her costumes, she wanted the music. She wanted complete you know,
- 34:47Speaker 5: oversight of what was going on on the ice. So
- 34:50Speaker 5: is that something you think an athlete should be able
- 34:53Speaker 5: to do, even at the Olympic level.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's actually that.
- 34:57Speaker 1: First of all, you know, figure skating, like I love
- 35:00Speaker 1: watching figure skating is so athletic and so but I
- 35:03Speaker 1: think just from the story that you just told, like
- 35:06Speaker 1: her said, like you said, her being a kid, teen sensation,
- 35:11Speaker 1: she probably was so controlled. You know, her schedule was defined,
- 35:15Speaker 1: what you eat, what you wear, that everything was dictated,
- 35:18Speaker 1: because if you're doing a sport like that, you gotta
- 35:20Speaker 1: be on it, like you don't have time. You can't
- 35:22Speaker 1: make mistakes when you're up in the ear air doing
- 35:25Speaker 1: twisting turns and flips and all that stuff. So I
- 35:28Speaker 1: would imagine that retirement gave her the space she needed
- 35:32Speaker 1: to say, Hey, if.
- 35:33Speaker 2: I come back, I'm doing it my way.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I'm not being controlled by anybody, and the results are
- 35:39Speaker 1: what they are paid off, so more prior to her. Yeah,
- 35:42Speaker 1: I think I think it's really hard to challenge her
- 35:46Speaker 1: with the success that she's had, right and when you
- 35:52Speaker 1: what can I actually what can I actually bring her
- 35:55Speaker 1: that she might not already know.
- 35:58Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I mean, but I don't think
- 36:00Speaker 2: it's about to me.
- 36:01Speaker 1: The result is just a byproduct of her I think
- 36:05Speaker 1: she needed and I think athletes a lot of times
- 36:08Speaker 1: you need that space just to say, hey, I need
- 36:10Speaker 1: to do it my way.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Now.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I've listened to people for my entire life life. So
- 36:15Speaker 1: whatever the result is, it is. But I want the
- 36:18Speaker 1: opportunity to do it my way, because now if I fail,
- 36:21Speaker 1: I did it my way. I'm not listening to you.
- 36:23Speaker 1: So it's like I can take the failure like and
- 36:26Speaker 1: and I'll I'll give a like a basketball analogy to
- 36:31Speaker 1: to kind of justify your your point. You can only
- 36:37Speaker 1: teach me. You can only coach me to a certain degree,
- 36:40Speaker 1: and then if I become good enough that I can
- 36:44Speaker 1: maybe make it to the NBA, got drafted in the
- 36:47Speaker 1: NBA somewhere, I have to take over my skill set.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I have to. I have to take you,
- 36:56Speaker 2: help me get you, help me get to a space.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Then there's there's a time where I have to be
- 37:03Speaker 1: the one to take those extra shots, make those extra moves,
- 37:08Speaker 1: and and try to figure out, Now, what kind of
- 37:10Speaker 1: player am I going to be? And I think that's
- 37:14Speaker 1: I think that's every player, male, female, And I don't
- 37:18Speaker 1: even care what the sport is. There's a there's a
- 37:20Speaker 1: place and say, let's just call it a trainer. You
- 37:23Speaker 1: got a trainer. That trainer can train you to a degree,
- 37:27Speaker 1: and then there's some place at some point, once he
- 37:31Speaker 1: or she's gotten you to this place, you have to
- 37:34Speaker 1: all of a sudden find your Yeah, because you can't
- 37:37Speaker 1: do it the way. It's not chalkboard like. You can't
- 37:41Speaker 1: do it all the time chalk board type. You have
- 37:44Speaker 1: to create it yourself. And I think every athlete gets
- 37:47Speaker 1: to that point. Every great I want to say every athlete,
- 37:49Speaker 1: but I think every great athlete had like you, you
- 37:51Speaker 1: have no choice but to get that. I'm even like
- 37:53Speaker 1: you look at somebody like Tom Brady when he created
- 37:55Speaker 1: the T TB twelve system and all the things he
- 37:58Speaker 1: was doing with his body, and he was doing everything
- 38:01Speaker 1: contradictory to probably what everybody thought he should be doing
- 38:04Speaker 1: at the age in his career. Tom Brady changed the
- 38:07Speaker 1: way he walked later and this he's like darning are
- 38:10Speaker 1: a forty year old man and literally changed the way
- 38:13Speaker 1: he walked like because it was it was more athletically
- 38:17Speaker 1: inclined to walk with your feet straight and not have
- 38:19Speaker 1: the duck feet. Like if you watch a lot of people,
- 38:22Speaker 1: they walk with the duck feet and not straight athleticism.
- 38:26Speaker 1: You know, yeah, so, but but what I'm saying though,
- 38:30Speaker 1: to your point, though, he took it over. And I
- 38:33Speaker 1: think every great athlete has to do that more so
- 38:35Speaker 1: more shout out to.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Her and and and and I.
- 38:37Speaker 1: And one of the things that I think is good
- 38:41Speaker 1: about it and the and the other side being bad
- 38:45Speaker 1: is the coach or whoever that other individual is shouldn't
- 38:49Speaker 1: be fighting to Well, you're gonna you, You're gonna want
- 38:53Speaker 1: to fight, like I said, if if you helped somebody
- 38:55Speaker 1: get there, and it's like, man, come on, we can
- 38:57Speaker 1: we could just do this together. And you know so
- 38:59Speaker 1: you you because you competitive too. So what what did
- 39:02Speaker 1: her coaches say, Is there anything?
- 39:03Speaker 5: I mean, I guess they Yeah, they just let her
- 39:06Speaker 5: have it. I mean they were probably just so glad
- 39:08Speaker 5: to have her back. They are just like, go go
- 39:10Speaker 5: for it, lady, if you think you know, and she
- 39:12Speaker 5: won goals.
- 39:14Speaker 1: And in this system it makes sense that they have
- 39:18Speaker 1: to back because it's the Olympics.
- 39:20Speaker 5: I'm sure the trainers still had to say in the
- 39:23Speaker 5: type of like, you know, there's certain critiquing, like moves
- 39:27Speaker 5: that they have to be a part of their performance.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Watching her, but everything's like, I'm gonna do it my way,
- 39:35Speaker 1: but I need you yes, say yeah, yeah, so that's fair.
- 39:38Speaker 5: And you know the difference between a sixteen year old
- 39:40Speaker 5: and a twenty year old, I mean, you know, that's
- 39:42Speaker 5: a difference between a child and an adult. So you know,
- 39:45Speaker 5: she pretty much was ready to take over her life
- 39:47Speaker 5: and say this is the way it's going to be done.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And I'm glad they gave her the space to do
- 39:51Speaker 1: that because a lot of times, you know, with our kids,
- 39:54Speaker 1: particularly if you got that success early, sometimes if you
- 39:57Speaker 1: don't give them the space they need, you know, they
- 39:59Speaker 1: can example, yeah, that creates a problem, you know.
- 40:03Speaker 5: And also after her performance. This was a little controversial
- 40:06Speaker 5: as well. She had her own little little thing that
- 40:09Speaker 5: she she said to the camera that that the camera
- 40:12Speaker 5: picked up on like a hot mic, and she said
- 40:14Speaker 5: that's After her performance was finished, she skated over to
- 40:17Speaker 5: the camera and said, that's what I'm blank talking about.
- 40:21Speaker 5: And so that that's that's kind of been a viral
- 40:23Speaker 5: clip on social media.
- 40:25Speaker 4: It is pretty cool.
- 40:26Speaker 5: Well, yeah, you can fill in the blank, okay.
- 40:30Speaker 1: And see and and and and again. I'll go back
- 40:32Speaker 1: to the athlete that knows what they can do right, confident,
- 40:37Speaker 1: the confidence in it. And I think if you're going
- 40:41Speaker 1: to be great, there's some there. At some point in time,
- 40:44Speaker 1: there has to be there has to be a realization
- 40:48Speaker 1: of where are you.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Have you done enough?
- 40:52Speaker 1: Do you think you are that guy or that girl
- 40:56Speaker 1: that you can be that great?
- 40:58Speaker 2: And I think a lot of people fake that.
- 41:01Speaker 4: I don't think you can fake it well, and you can't.
- 41:05Speaker 2: To me, you can't fake it anyway.
- 41:07Speaker 1: You can't fake it because when you play a game,
- 41:10Speaker 1: if you're not showing out, then you're.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Not the guy or the girl.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Yeah, So trust me, you'll know when you're that person
- 41:21Speaker 1: because you'll be in that situation. You you will be
- 41:24Speaker 1: where everybody's looking for it. Everybody's expecting you to throw
- 41:27Speaker 1: the touchdown past. Everybody's thinking that you're going to win
- 41:30Speaker 1: the game for him. You got the shot, you got this,
- 41:33Speaker 1: You got that, everybody's going to be expecting it coming
- 41:35Speaker 1: from you.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Right, That's when you know you're that person.
- 41:39Speaker 4: That's when you've made it.
- 41:40Speaker 2: That's when you made it.
- 41:41Speaker 5: The expectation is there, it's already. It's not whether or
- 41:45Speaker 5: not it's going to happen, is when it's going to happen.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Kobe Brown on the basketball court, there's there's there's they're
- 41:50Speaker 1: down too.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Who's getting the ball? Who's taking that shot?
- 41:54Speaker 1: You know he wants the ball. If I've got the ball,
- 41:57Speaker 1: he's he's taking that from me. And he because he
- 42:00Speaker 1: wants the ball, he wants to be able to be
- 42:02Speaker 1: that person. That to me, and that's what I like
- 42:05Speaker 1: about the Olympics as well. It is it is the
- 42:11Speaker 1: belief in having a talent that is as good as
- 42:16Speaker 1: anybody ever, right, I mean, think about that.
- 42:20Speaker 2: How do you you can't ignore that to yourself?
- 42:22Speaker 4: No, you know you can't take it. You make it.
- 42:26Speaker 5: Not in the Olympics, there's too many high level athletes
- 42:29Speaker 5: against you, and.
- 42:31Speaker 1: And and everybody's trying to do the same thing that
- 42:33Speaker 1: you're doing. So it is that that that to me.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Is well, there's there's one funny thing and I know
- 42:43Speaker 4: that that.
- 42:43Speaker 5: I mean, Hollis is mentioned in our text threat how
- 42:46Speaker 5: much of a curling fan he is.
- 42:48Speaker 1: And so curling not on every for the last two weeks.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Curling was on every single day.
- 42:55Speaker 5: There it was the sport there's a cheating scandal exactly.
- 43:03Speaker 4: It's just this is the headline.
- 43:05Speaker 5: Canada's curling skip tells cheating accusers to get Olympic celebration
- 43:10Speaker 5: burned into your break. So I guess it was Canada
- 43:15Speaker 5: that got accused of matt do you know?
- 43:17Speaker 4: Help us?
- 43:19Speaker 8: So all right, so they call this the gentleman's sport, right,
- 43:22Speaker 8: it's supposed to be very amicable and you go and
- 43:25Speaker 8: have beers after you're done, plane and everything. So when
- 43:29Speaker 8: you push the stone down the ice, there's a handle
- 43:33Speaker 8: on top and you're only allowed to touch that handle.
- 43:36Speaker 8: But I guess the controversy is the Canadian is doing
- 43:40Speaker 8: just a little finger.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Push on the stone itself. The line right over the line. Yeah,
- 43:47Speaker 2: what you're talking about they.
- 43:48Speaker 8: Got into like a live heated four letter word match
- 43:52Speaker 8: on live TV coverage of this because he got called
- 43:55Speaker 8: out for.
- 43:56Speaker 1: It because you hold the hand, you hold the handle,
- 44:00Speaker 1: and then you like you let the handle go before
- 44:02Speaker 1: the line. So what he did he had to handle,
- 44:05Speaker 1: let it go, and then he just his pointer fing
- 44:07Speaker 1: he just pointed, he just pushed it a little bit
- 44:10Speaker 1: right over the line.
- 44:11Speaker 4: It's gonna be curling expert.
- 44:14Speaker 1: It was literally literally on every single day for two weeks,
- 44:19Speaker 1: Like I watched more curling then I probably watched Team
- 44:25Speaker 1: Let's go, man, Charles right, my disc left.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Let's go? Where do you even? Where do you even
- 44:33Speaker 2: start that? I have no idea, like where, like where
- 44:36Speaker 2: do you go? Like who has that? At a high school?
- 44:39Speaker 8: I think they've got one up in Sandusky, Ohio.
- 44:43Speaker 4: I don't think it's a thing in West Virginia at all.
- 44:45Speaker 9: Is it's like, what's the what's the We got like
- 44:48Speaker 9: two ice drinks in the whole, but what's the what's
- 44:50Speaker 9: the what's what's the name of the sport at the bar?
- 44:53Speaker 9: It has the sand over it and it just what's
- 44:56Speaker 9: what is that?
- 44:59Speaker 1: I know what you're talking, I don't know what. So
- 45:00Speaker 1: that's kind of like a non ice version of like curl.
- 45:04Speaker 1: It's a little bit like it, so kinda so you
- 45:07Speaker 1: can practice that his whole body though, Yeah, well clearly,
- 45:11Speaker 1: I don't know in West Virginia if that might not
- 45:13Speaker 1: be anybody's goal, I don't know.
- 45:15Speaker 5: So we've learned two important things tonight about our our
- 45:18Speaker 5: co hosts here that Curl is scared of baseball and
- 45:22Speaker 5: Hollis is going to start a new career in curl.
- 45:28Speaker 1: But the good thing about Curly no physicality, there's no physicality,
- 45:32Speaker 1: is you got to get the broom.
- 45:34Speaker 2: You gotta gotta.
- 45:36Speaker 4: Figure it out for me.
- 45:38Speaker 1: You gotta get the broom. Sweep it, slow it down,
- 45:42Speaker 1: speed it up. I can't even know. I can't even
- 45:44Speaker 1: imagine him. I don't even see I can't even see
- 45:46Speaker 1: him watching.
- 45:47Speaker 4: That every day watch it's relaxing.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Every day it is.
- 45:53Speaker 8: We had it on in the studio in there with
- 45:55Speaker 8: Dave Weekly on Hotline every day too. I come in
- 45:58Speaker 8: there for a segment be on the TV curling, Curling
- 46:02Speaker 8: and the stocks.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Because with curling they got they have the women's, they
- 46:06Speaker 1: have the men's and then they have the mix, so
- 46:09Speaker 1: it's it's three different events. So it's like it's literally,
- 46:12Speaker 1: you know, they go through all the qualifiers and all that.
- 46:14Speaker 2: So it's a bunch of things.
- 46:16Speaker 5: So let's wrap up this conversation on the Winter Olympics
- 46:19Speaker 5: of twenty twenty six. So what was your favorite favorite sport?
- 46:23Speaker 5: Did you have one that that was particularly your most favorite?
- 46:26Speaker 1: My favorite was the short downhill solemn. Oh my god,
- 46:32Speaker 1: when I when I tell you, like, because it's the
- 46:35Speaker 1: short hills, not the long hill. So, like I said,
- 46:37Speaker 1: the solemn is they're they're like, you know, they're going
- 46:40Speaker 1: down the hill and they're going around the flags. And
- 46:42Speaker 1: with this one it's the parallel, so they're competing against one.
- 46:45Speaker 1: So your competitors right besides you, so your and looks
- 46:49Speaker 1: so when look look.
- 46:55Speaker 2: But here's here's the thing though. Here's the thing though.
- 46:57Speaker 1: So we were like I'm sitting watching it and I'm noticing, like,
- 47:01Speaker 1: at least on my hand right here side the blue path,
- 47:04Speaker 1: it's like faster. So we're we're sitting there watching them like, yeah,
- 47:07Speaker 1: when you they're like even when they get to a point,
- 47:10Speaker 1: then the red starts to pull away. Then with the
- 47:12Speaker 1: blue side gets to a certain point, the ice excuse me,
- 47:15Speaker 1: the snow gets slick or something. So every time they
- 47:17Speaker 1: were pulling around and we noticing, like you know, when
- 47:20Speaker 1: you're going around the flags, you're not just like sliding
- 47:23Speaker 1: around them, You're like jump hop like basketball, like a
- 47:27Speaker 1: jump up, so you're doing that, you're like jumping jumping.
- 47:31Speaker 1: I'm telling you it was great, short, parallel, downhill, solid
- 47:37Speaker 1: favorite Olympics. How did it sound again? Okay we have
- 47:44Speaker 1: had break sounds, nothing else are great best, but I'm
- 47:51Speaker 1: telling you do YouTube it well?
- 47:53Speaker 4: What was your favorite? Carl? Real quick?
- 47:55Speaker 1: I'm just just I just like the downhill scheme. I
- 47:58Speaker 1: don't know how to I don't I don't want to know.
- 48:01Speaker 1: I don't want to try to go into the details
- 48:03Speaker 1: of how that worked. I pull around and break.
- 48:05Speaker 4: And almost the hockey. I like the men and women's hockey.
- 48:09Speaker 4: I thought those were exciting.
- 48:10Speaker 2: It's big. It's big.
- 48:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I was early.
- 48:13Speaker 2: Have you have you ever seen it?
- 48:14Speaker 4: Yes?
- 48:15Speaker 5: I went to a Pittsburgh Penguins game one time. It
- 48:18Speaker 5: was pretty It is the match. That's a game hockey. Okay,
- 48:24Speaker 5: so good.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Yeah, And I'm telling you if if you if anybody's
- 48:27Speaker 1: out there who's never been never been to it, been
- 48:31Speaker 1: to a hockey match. You should see one. Go to
- 48:36Speaker 1: high school. Even if you don't have check it, just
- 48:40Speaker 1: go see it. It is so amazing and the skill
- 48:45Speaker 1: set is just out of this world.
- 48:47Speaker 4: And the sound you really don't get the sound.
- 48:52Speaker 1: And I want to go see the Nailers two of Willing.
- 48:53Speaker 1: So we got a semipro here team and and Will
- 48:57Speaker 1: So I've seen the Nailers here.
- 48:59Speaker 2: That was was I didn't even know that.
- 49:02Speaker 4: I've never heard of it either. So here we go
- 49:03Speaker 4: field trip.
- 49:04Speaker 1: So yeah, that's what I'm saying. We all have when
- 49:07Speaker 1: so is this are we in season? I'm not sure
- 49:10Speaker 1: like to see I don't know that DP, but I
- 49:11Speaker 1: know so.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:13Speaker 1: But the Neller is on where semi pro team? I
- 49:15Speaker 1: think they're affiliated. I want to say with the Bruins,
- 49:18Speaker 1: saylated with somebody.
- 49:20Speaker 2: We got it. Yeah, we need to go. We need
- 49:21Speaker 2: to go watch that. It's really fun.
- 49:24Speaker 8: We could go to go to Columbus Columbus because they're
- 49:27Speaker 8: in season for sure. I would say that the money
- 49:30Speaker 8: probably is too, but definitely the major NHL.
- 49:34Speaker 4: Yeah they are for sure.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Man, All right, well, it sounds like a bus
- 49:38Speaker 2: store on the read, so I guess we'll wrap it
- 49:43Speaker 2: up on a on a field trip.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Coming up, Ladies and gentlemen, We appreciate you being here,
- 49:48Speaker 1: and we are out of here.
