- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the World Series edition of Fair Territory.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo. We're going to
- 0:16Speaker 1: talk about all things World Series, the addition of Bobaschett
- 0:19Speaker 1: to the roster, the situation with Alex Vesia. We're going
- 0:22Speaker 1: to get into some other things going on in the
- 0:24Speaker 1: sport as well, the Angels, the Giants, all kinds of things.
- 0:28Speaker 1: But first Alana, Hello, how are you And it's good
- 0:31Speaker 1: to be with you again.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, great to be with you too.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Ken.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Of course, the time we've been waiting for the rosters
- 0:37Speaker 2: are out. What do you make of it?
- 0:40Speaker 1: The big one is Bobachhett, the big addition now he
- 0:43Speaker 1: was added to the roster, as was Ty France, and
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Jays are dropping Yaiel Rodriguez the reliever and Joey
- 0:50Speaker 1: low Perfito, who has added for Anthony Santander in the
- 0:53Speaker 1: last round. Bashett obviously is major news. Now the next
- 0:57Speaker 1: question is how are the Jays going to deplay Bobashett.
- 1:01Speaker 1: They obviously feel he is healthy enough to play, even
- 1:04Speaker 1: though he has not played since September sixth due to
- 1:06Speaker 1: a left knees sprain. So do you use him as
- 1:09Speaker 1: a DH Do you use him at shortstop doubtful because
- 1:13Speaker 1: Andres heimen As is playing so well and Bobaschett's coming
- 1:15Speaker 1: over for Knees Sprain. Or do you use him at
- 1:18Speaker 1: second base, which is where he has taken ground balls
- 1:20Speaker 1: the last couple of days. That's a position he hasn't
- 1:23Speaker 1: played since twenty nineteen at Triple A. I don't see
- 1:26Speaker 1: that happening to me. With Blake Snell, a left hander
- 1:29Speaker 1: on the mound tonight, the obvious move is Bishett at
- 1:33Speaker 1: DH George Springer in the outfield. Now, George Springer hasn't
- 1:36Speaker 1: played the outfield since September twenty fourth, hasn't done it
- 1:40Speaker 1: all that much this year. But when I asked manager
- 1:43Speaker 1: John Schneider yesterday, can Springer play the outfield? Is he
- 1:45Speaker 1: capable of doing that? Schneinder's answer was yes, absolutely he
- 1:50Speaker 1: is so. Bogashett again is not on the roster just
- 1:54Speaker 1: for appearance's sake. Maybe they will use him solely as
- 1:56Speaker 1: a pinch hitter. I can kind of see that. But again,
- 1:59Speaker 1: with the lefty on the mound Ilana tonight, the night
- 2:02Speaker 1: we see Boba shed in my opinion, yeah, and it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Looks like Jario Rodriguez, Joey low Berfito, we're off. As
- 2:08Speaker 2: you mentioned, Ken ty Franz also added to the roster.
- 2:11Speaker 2: You look at the Los Angeles Dodgers side and they
- 2:13Speaker 2: are out there without Alex Vesia at least for now.
- 2:17Speaker 2: What more can you tell us.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Well, he had what the Dodgers described as a family
- 2:23Speaker 1: emergency over the last couple of days, so he is
- 2:26Speaker 1: not going to be on the roster. There was some
- 2:27Speaker 1: question over whether he would be added to the Family
- 2:31Speaker 1: Emergency Bereavement list, which is something that would require him
- 2:35Speaker 1: to be at a minimum of three days and a
- 2:37Speaker 1: maximum of seven. As far as we know, he has
- 2:40Speaker 1: not been put on that list. They announced their roster
- 2:43Speaker 1: this morning. Will Klein was on it, others were on it,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and Alex Vessia was not. So it seems to me
- 2:49Speaker 1: that because of what happened with Alex Vessia, and we
- 2:51Speaker 1: don't know more details just yet, he is not going
- 2:55Speaker 1: to be available and the roster is set, and that
- 2:57Speaker 1: is that. Obviously, it's a shame for the Vessi has
- 3:01Speaker 1: been a terrific reliever for them all year. But the
- 3:03Speaker 1: bigger concern, of course is Vessia and his family and
- 3:06Speaker 1: everything going on with him, So our thoughts obviously go
- 3:10Speaker 1: out to him as in addition to everything else going
- 3:12Speaker 1: on here. But no, he will not be on the roster.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, we certainly are thinking about Alex Vessia, his wife Kayla.
- 3:19Speaker 2: The Dodgers said it's with heavy heart that they're dealing
- 3:21Speaker 2: with a deeply personal matter. Ben Casparius also left off
- 3:25Speaker 2: of the roster. No Tanner Scott, he wasn't activated at
- 3:28Speaker 2: Gardo Henriquez And as you mentioned, Ken Will kleinb we're
- 3:31Speaker 2: added for Los Angeles for the Fall Classic. Let's talk
- 3:34Speaker 2: about some not so obvious World series storylines. Ken Jay's
- 3:39Speaker 2: ability to adjust to off speed stuff.
- 3:42Speaker 1: What do you know, Well, in the first two rounds,
- 3:45Speaker 1: we saw the Yankees and the Mariners try to fastball
- 3:49Speaker 1: the Jays out of existence. It didn't work very well,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and the Mariners kept pounding fastballs because that is what
- 3:55Speaker 1: they do. This is who we are. We pound his
- 3:57Speaker 1: own and the Jays basically not be held down. I
- 4:01Speaker 1: would expect that the Dodgers are not going to fall
- 4:04Speaker 1: into this same trap. I would expect that the Dodgers
- 4:06Speaker 1: are going to go more breaking ball with Snells starting
- 4:09Speaker 1: tonight and onward, and if the jas can adjust to
- 4:13Speaker 1: that because they're heavy first pitch swinging team, aggressive early
- 4:17Speaker 1: incounts all the power to them. It's just a different
- 4:20Speaker 1: look and they're going to get a different look from
- 4:22Speaker 1: the Dodgers. One of the things the Dodgers do really well.
- 4:25Speaker 1: We talk about their money endlessly, but they gain plan
- 4:29Speaker 1: really well, and obviously right now their starting pitchers are
- 4:33Speaker 1: executing at a level that we haven't seen in the
- 4:35Speaker 1: postseason for quite some time. Ken.
- 4:38Speaker 2: One of the things about the matchup between the Dodgers
- 4:40Speaker 2: and whether it was going to be the Mariners or
- 4:42Speaker 2: the Blue Jays, is that the Blue Jays don't have
- 4:44Speaker 2: as many left handed starters in the starting rotation, but
- 4:47Speaker 2: they do have some pretty darn good left handed relievers.
- 4:50Speaker 2: How do you think that will affect the Freeman's of
- 4:52Speaker 2: Tawny's and Munsies of the world.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I would say a lot of they have left handed relievers.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I don't know how good they are now. Mason Fleuhardy
- 4:59Speaker 1: has been pretty good and he's had a good run
- 5:01Speaker 1: in the postseason. He's been someone actually who had to
- 5:03Speaker 1: save against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. That game kind
- 5:06Speaker 1: of swung the home field advantage for this series. If
- 5:10Speaker 1: you look back on it now, Jays with ninety four
- 5:12Speaker 1: wins Dodgers with ninety three. That game could have changed it.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Brendan Little gave up the big game time Homer to
- 5:18Speaker 1: cal Rally in Game five of the Alcs, and that
- 5:22Speaker 1: was a situation where they wanted Rolli batting right handed.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Didn't work out too well. Brendan Little has been for
- 5:28Speaker 1: the JS until I would say the last month or so,
- 5:31Speaker 1: a very effective reliever, but right now not as hot
- 5:35Speaker 1: as he was earlier in the season. And then there's
- 5:37Speaker 1: Eric Lower who is more of a swingman, not a
- 5:39Speaker 1: matchup guy, but I would imagine that they'll have him
- 5:41Speaker 1: on the Dodgers left handed hitters as well. So this
- 5:45Speaker 1: is a pivotal question in the series. How will the
- 5:48Speaker 1: J's hold down the Dodgers offense, Because if you remember,
- 5:52Speaker 1: going back, even to the Wildcard round, the Dodgers faced
- 5:55Speaker 1: great pitching with the Reds, they faced it with the
- 5:57Speaker 1: Phillies for sure, and even with the Brewers. Now they're
- 6:00Speaker 1: facing a staff where you Savage is really interesting and
- 6:04Speaker 1: this is the first time they'll see him. It's probably
- 6:06Speaker 1: going to be difficult, I would imagine, and then Gossman,
- 6:09Speaker 1: who has been good, but we're getting later in the postseason. Now.
- 6:12Speaker 1: This is not as dominant a group, in my opinion
- 6:15Speaker 1: as some of the Dodgers' opponents earlier. So we'll see
- 6:20Speaker 1: how it goes. But what I like about this series
- 6:23Speaker 1: a lot. I'm interested in your opinion. It seems to
- 6:25Speaker 1: me that people think, Eh, Dodgers in five, Dodgers will
- 6:29Speaker 1: roll them. I'm not so sure that's going to happen.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Well can I want it to be entertaining. I did
- 6:37Speaker 2: say Dodgers in six, just to be different than my Dodgers'
- 6:40Speaker 2: territory co host Clint Pasias, who took the Dodgers in five.
- 6:43Speaker 2: But one of the questions, or one of the discussions
- 6:45Speaker 2: that we had yesterday can and I'm interested in your
- 6:48Speaker 2: thoughts about it. How much do you think experience plays
- 6:51Speaker 2: into this? The Toronto Blue Jays haven't been to the
- 6:54Speaker 2: World Series, I believe since ninety three. You would know
- 6:56Speaker 2: better than I. The Dodgers have been there as recently
- 6:58Speaker 2: as last year. Not just the players that have the experience,
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's Dave Roberts and his coaching staff as well. How
- 7:05Speaker 2: much does that experience lend into what the Dodgers are
- 7:09Speaker 2: experiencing this time versus what the Blue Jays are experiencing
- 7:12Speaker 2: because it's new for the majority of them.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I would say the biggest edge perhaps is with the
- 7:17Speaker 1: managers because Dave Roberts has been through this time and
- 7:20Speaker 1: time again. He has learned how to manage effectively in
- 7:24Speaker 1: the postseason, and he's done it in different ways with
- 7:26Speaker 1: the pullpen last year, with the rotation this year. He
- 7:29Speaker 1: understands the urgency. John Schneiner does too for the Toronto
- 7:33Speaker 1: Blue Jays, but it is newer for him and he
- 7:35Speaker 1: had an experience with Brendan Little in Game five where
- 7:38Speaker 1: maybe he should have used Jeff Hoffman, and he's kind
- 7:40Speaker 1: of learning as he goes. But at the same time,
- 7:43Speaker 1: he's done a really good job for them. So certainly
- 7:46Speaker 1: Roberts has more experience and more experience on this the
- 7:49Speaker 1: biggest stages. As for the players, keep in mind the
- 7:53Speaker 1: Jays have some veterans who have been here. George Springer
- 7:57Speaker 1: is one. Max Schurzer is another. Facet maybe not, but
- 8:01Speaker 1: he is a veteran. And they have a pretty good
- 8:04Speaker 1: mix of veteran players and less established players. And then
- 8:09Speaker 1: they have a guy named Vladimir Guerrero Junior who seems
- 8:11Speaker 1: too relish being on the stages. So I don't know
- 8:16Speaker 1: that it's going to matter that much. It certainly helps
- 8:19Speaker 1: them as well, being at home to start the series
- 8:21Speaker 1: where they've been really good all season long, even though
- 8:24Speaker 1: the first two games of the ALCS were dropped at
- 8:27Speaker 1: Rogers Centers by the JS. I just expect they're going
- 8:31Speaker 1: to be playing at their usual level. I don't expect
- 8:34Speaker 1: them to be intimidated or stage fright, anything like that.
- 8:38Speaker 1: That's not them.
- 8:40Speaker 2: And can we know that you've been to multiple World Series,
- 8:42Speaker 2: You've covered a lot of them. You know you've been
- 8:45Speaker 2: to at least twenty, maybe closer to forty in terms
- 8:47Speaker 2: of coverage. What are you looking the most forward to
- 8:50Speaker 2: in terms of this particular matchup.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Well, we haven't talked much about the possibility of the
- 8:56Speaker 1: Dodgers going back to back, and that's something that hasn't
- 8:59Speaker 1: been done since the nineteen ninety eight to two thousand Yankees.
- 9:02Speaker 1: That is something that is of course the backdrop to
- 9:04Speaker 1: this series. And the other aspect of that is if
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Blue Jays win somehow, if they upset the Dodgers,
- 9:13Speaker 1: it seems to me that a lot of people who
- 9:15Speaker 1: are not Dodgers fans are going to be very happy.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And all those people who talk about the Dodgers ruining
- 9:22Speaker 1: the sport and all of this, and Jason Stark has
- 9:24Speaker 1: a wonderful article today explaining how they're not ruining the sport.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Those people are going to be screaming louder when, if,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and when the Dodgers do win the series. So it
- 9:35Speaker 1: almost seems to me and people are going to take
- 9:37Speaker 1: objection to this that for the sport as we go
- 9:40Speaker 1: into a labor negotiation coming up. Not that the Jays
- 9:43Speaker 1: are a small market team, they've got the fifth hard
- 9:45Speaker 1: largest payroll. It seems to me that some of that
- 9:49Speaker 1: talk would calm down if the Jay's won. So all
- 9:51Speaker 1: of these things are kind of swirling around Alana, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: I'm just looking forward to the games themselves because I
- 9:56Speaker 1: expect they're going to be good.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously Canada cheering for the and I would imagine
- 10:01Speaker 2: a lot of folks in the United States cheering for
- 10:03Speaker 2: the Jays as well, Ken if they're not Dodgers fans.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Don't forget though the Dodgers do have the entire country
- 10:08Speaker 2: of Japan back in them with Sho hee O Tani
- 10:11Speaker 2: and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, as well as Roki Sasaki. Of course,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I kid, it's gonna be a fun, fun series, all right,
- 10:17Speaker 2: get your questions in, guys on the chat for Ken Rosenthal.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So much to talk about here as we're getting ready
- 10:22Speaker 2: for Game one of the twenty twenty five World Series.
- 10:26Speaker 2: We'll be back right after a quick break.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Let's take you through the Arena Club slab Pack experience.
- 10:32Speaker 4: This is part two because Todd Father last week pulled
- 10:35Speaker 4: a card that he didn't love, yet he sold it
- 10:38Speaker 4: back for actually more than what the slab pack cost.
- 10:41Speaker 4: This time pulls a card that he likes.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and this is the best part of it. Ronnie
- 10:46Speaker 3: Mauricio and Me's stand out, you know, rookie Sensation. He's
- 10:50Speaker 3: been absolutely phenomenal. I like the itch of seeing what
- 10:53Speaker 3: you're gonna get, you know, I like prospects. I don't
- 10:55Speaker 3: love him, but seeing this kind of card is an actually,
- 10:58Speaker 3: absolutely beautiful thing. I know a couple people around town
- 11:01Speaker 3: that would absolutely love that card. So there's gon to
- 11:03Speaker 3: be a lot of conversations going on here for Arena Club.
- 11:06Speaker 4: And what you do is you have it in your
- 11:07Speaker 4: digital showroom. If you want to hand it out locally,
- 11:10Speaker 4: then cool. You ask Arena Club to send it to
- 11:13Speaker 4: you and they do. Or you can sell it back
- 11:15Speaker 4: like you see there instant offer for one hundred and
- 11:17Speaker 4: ninety three bucks.
- 11:18Speaker 1: But he's keeping it, and you can.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Do what Todd Father does by going to Arena club
- 11:21Speaker 4: dot com slash fouling getting twenty percent off your first
- 11:25Speaker 4: card purchase or your first slab pack purchase.
- 11:34Speaker 2: All right, we welcome you back to Fair Territory with
- 11:37Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal. Time now to get some questions in the
- 11:40Speaker 2: first question is in regards to matchup, and this one
- 11:43Speaker 2: I believe is from Mikey Romeo, and it's about what
- 11:46Speaker 2: matchup Ken, you're looking the most forward to. I would
- 11:48Speaker 2: imagine they're talking about a hitter pitcher matchup. Mikey Romeo
- 11:52Speaker 2: twenty one sixty six. Who do you want to see
- 11:54Speaker 2: at the plate and on the hill.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Let's start with game one, Treya Savage versus the Dodgers.
- 12:00Speaker 1: He has this unique high arm slot that players rarely see.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I don't know that anyone in the major leagues right
- 12:06Speaker 1: now is even comparable to you, Savage. So the Dodgers
- 12:10Speaker 1: are going to be seeing him for the first time,
- 12:12Speaker 1: but not really in the sense that they have the
- 12:15Speaker 1: traject Machine. And if you haven't heard about this, that's
- 12:18Speaker 1: a machine that can simulate any pictures, delivery and pitch shapes.
- 12:23Speaker 1: You look at the video on the screen in the
- 12:26Speaker 1: distance sixty feet six inches whatever it is, and that's
- 12:29Speaker 1: the picture coming at you. So they were watching you
- 12:32Speaker 1: Savage hitting off you Savage on the machine before they
- 12:35Speaker 1: left for Toronto. Now it's not the same as doing
- 12:37Speaker 1: it in the game, obviously, but it's pretty darn close.
- 12:41Speaker 1: But that, to me is the most intriguing thing. When
- 12:43Speaker 1: a team has not seen this guy, it's not easy
- 12:46Speaker 1: to deal with his split, with his slider, with his fastball.
- 12:49Speaker 1: He is a different look.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Can some folks want to make a case that he
- 12:54Speaker 2: only has six big league starts under his belt, had
- 12:57Speaker 2: a meteoric rise obviously, Tray Savage, I'm talking about through
- 13:00Speaker 2: the system and getting to the point where he gets
- 13:02Speaker 2: the ball for Game one of the World Series. Should
- 13:05Speaker 2: we look into that too much? Do you think the
- 13:07Speaker 2: moment will be too big? How will you know when
- 13:09Speaker 2: you watch this game tonight that he's on Just.
- 13:12Speaker 1: If he's in the zone and commanding his pitches. I
- 13:16Speaker 1: don't expect the moment to be big for him because
- 13:19Speaker 1: he's done this against the Yankees. Now, he's done it
- 13:21Speaker 1: twice against the Mariners and the Alcs. He has faced
- 13:24Speaker 1: big moments. Now. Granted, this is Game one of the
- 13:26Speaker 1: World Series, but a lot of this is a unique individual.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He's twenty two years old and talks like he's thirty
- 13:33Speaker 1: two when we interview him. It's not like you're interviewing
- 13:36Speaker 1: a kid. He's got the presence and the fearlessness and
- 13:39Speaker 1: all of those things that you would want. So I
- 13:42Speaker 1: do not expect the moment to be too big for him. Obviously,
- 13:46Speaker 1: the Dodgers might be too big for him. It's Otani
- 13:48Speaker 1: and Betts and Freeman and Munsey and Smith, but I
- 13:52Speaker 1: don't expect them be nervous. Put it that way.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Treya Savage certainly has a bright future
- 13:57Speaker 2: in the sport. He does seem like he's ahead of
- 14:00Speaker 2: his time in terms of his poison professional as the
- 14:02Speaker 2: Next question is from Luke Artema seventy fifty six. Which
- 14:05Speaker 2: bullpen has the advantage in this series? Can the Dodgers'
- 14:09Speaker 2: bullpen has been suspect if you will, What do you
- 14:12Speaker 2: think in terms of Luke's.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Question, I would say both are suspect, and the Dodgers
- 14:18Speaker 1: then would have the advantage because their starters are going
- 14:20Speaker 1: deeper into games. This thirty five to forty game stretch
- 14:24Speaker 1: that they've been on, the starters have been incredible. So
- 14:28Speaker 1: I would say the Dodgers have the advantage typically because
- 14:30Speaker 1: we're not going to see their relievers as much. And
- 14:33Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. I know Mike Petrillo and MLB
- 14:36Speaker 1: dot Com has mentioned and others have too, that Sasaki
- 14:39Speaker 1: because he's not striking out guys. What he's doing is
- 14:42Speaker 1: a little bit smoking mirrors, all right, But he's doing it.
- 14:45Speaker 1: So we'll see how that all plays out. But yes,
- 14:47Speaker 1: I would not say either team as a particular advantage
- 14:50Speaker 1: in that regard. Both bullpens are capable of being had. Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I love this next question. Toronto is a beautiful city.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Canada is a beautiful country. I love this question. Do
- 15:02Speaker 2: you see this World series igniting talks about a team
- 15:05Speaker 2: coming back to Montreal. We'll see that support fandom, fan
- 15:08Speaker 2: base in baseball in Canada, it's big. It's not just
- 15:11Speaker 2: hockey there They love their baseball.
- 15:12Speaker 1: As well, no question, and some of the TV ratings
- 15:16Speaker 1: for the Alcs Game seven especially were off the charts
- 15:20Speaker 1: for Rogers. Now, Rogers has the rights in Canada, just
- 15:23Speaker 1: as Fox has them in the United States, and Game
- 15:27Speaker 1: seven the average viewership was six million in a country
- 15:30Speaker 1: of forty million. That's an amazing number. Now what does
- 15:33Speaker 1: it mean from Montreal. I don't know that it means anything.
- 15:37Speaker 1: It seems to me that Nashville is a strong favorite
- 15:40Speaker 1: whenever baseball does expand for one of the teams and
- 15:43Speaker 1: the other team would be out west. Montreal is a
- 15:47Speaker 1: city that once supported baseball, and you can make a
- 15:49Speaker 1: strong case that the strike of nineteen ninety four ninety
- 15:52Speaker 1: five is what did in baseball in Montreal, and that
- 15:55Speaker 1: was through no fault of the people living there or
- 15:57Speaker 1: the fans there. But I just don't see Montreal being
- 16:02Speaker 1: at the forefront of expansion talks. It just doesn't seem
- 16:05Speaker 1: like it has been that way in recent years.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I believe that Netflix just came out with a documentary
- 16:11Speaker 2: on the expos that our friend Ken Rosenthal has a
- 16:14Speaker 2: cameo in talking about the Washington, DC market. Check it
- 16:18Speaker 2: out on Netflix. All right after the break, Ken and
- 16:21Speaker 2: I are going to discuss our dude and dorks of
- 16:24Speaker 2: the week. We'll be right back, bet.
- 16:26Speaker 4: I'MGM account holders today. How about in any sport parlay
- 16:30Speaker 4: boost token. You can score a bigger payout if your
- 16:32Speaker 4: wager with that token hits. Tokens can be used on
- 16:34Speaker 4: parlays and on same game parlays. Gambling problem or concerned,
- 16:38Speaker 4: there's help called one eight hundred gambler.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Dude, Dude, dude, dud.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Ken, Let's give somebody some praise. Who is your due
- 16:52Speaker 2: to the week?
- 16:54Speaker 1: I'm going to go with San Francisco Giants President of
- 16:57Speaker 1: Baseball Operations, Buster Posey. Now, the hiring of Tony Botello
- 17:02Speaker 1: as manager could be great, it could be a disaster.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I don't know that it's going to be somewhere in between.
- 17:07Speaker 1: But what I admire about Posey here is the guts
- 17:10Speaker 1: that he has shown since taking this position. This is
- 17:13Speaker 1: a former player moving into the front office in the
- 17:15Speaker 1: highest role possible, and he is just doing some things
- 17:19Speaker 1: that have been unconventional, to say the least, this hiring
- 17:22Speaker 1: being most of all, you see here the quote from
- 17:25Speaker 1: Scott Ostler, the brilliant Commiss San Francisco Chronicle. Buster Posey
- 17:29Speaker 1: didn't just think outside the box and hiring Tony Battello
- 17:32Speaker 1: to be the new manager of the San Francisco Giants.
- 17:34Speaker 1: He's thinking outside the warehouse where the boxes are store.
- 17:38Speaker 1: That is a great line. I wish I could write
- 17:40Speaker 1: like that, And Scott's right, it's completely outside the box.
- 17:43Speaker 1: But you know what, it's different and maybe it works
- 17:47Speaker 1: and maybe Buster Posey looks really good. He made a
- 17:49Speaker 1: daring trade as well for ralphae Old Devers, and people
- 17:52Speaker 1: in the industry are like, oh, they take on all
- 17:54Speaker 1: that money. Well, they couldn't get a star any other way.
- 17:56Speaker 1: They struck out on all those free agents. So I
- 18:00Speaker 1: just admire the way he's going about it, and whether
- 18:02Speaker 1: he succeeds that remains to be seen.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Yeah, they lost out on Shoho Atani, they lost out
- 18:07Speaker 2: on Aaron Judge. They made that big move for Rafael Devers.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Hopefully it pays dividends for them in the future. My
- 18:12Speaker 2: Dude of the Week Ken is a baseball lifer don
- 18:15Speaker 2: Mattingly Donnie Baseball, who of course has been around this
- 18:18Speaker 2: game for a very long time thirty six years in fact,
- 18:21Speaker 2: almost four decades, and he's never been to the World Series,
- 18:25Speaker 2: not as a player. Of course, his unbelievable career was
- 18:28Speaker 2: shortened by injuries. He very much could be in the
- 18:31Speaker 2: Hall of Fame had he kept going. You know, he
- 18:33Speaker 2: hasn't been there as a manager, he has not been
- 18:35Speaker 2: there as a coach until now. So congratulations to Donnie Baseball,
- 18:39Speaker 2: obviously a part of John Schneider's staff with the Toronto
- 18:42Speaker 2: Blue Jays. I'm happy for him. I'm so happy for Laurie,
- 18:45Speaker 2: his wife, their kids, Preston Mattingly, who obviously is with
- 18:47Speaker 2: the Philadelphia Phillies. Just congratulations and good luck to Donnie
- 18:51Speaker 2: Baseball in terms of that. Time now for the dork
- 18:55Speaker 2: of the week, and you and I typically split this up,
- 19:06Speaker 2: but I think this is a question of this could
- 19:10Speaker 2: potentially be our dork of the year on those are
- 19:13Speaker 2: my words, not your words, But why don't you go
- 19:15Speaker 2: ahead and start us off? Who is the dork of
- 19:17Speaker 2: the week this week?
- 19:18Speaker 1: Certainly the dork of the week now Dork of the
- 19:20Speaker 1: year will deal with it another time a lota, But
- 19:23Speaker 1: we're going to divide this up because we each have
- 19:25Speaker 1: reasons why we want to name this person dork of
- 19:28Speaker 1: the week, and it's going to be Artie Moreno, the
- 19:30Speaker 1: Angel's owner, and I'm going to name him dork of
- 19:33Speaker 1: the Week for giving Kurt Zuzuki's new manager a one
- 19:37Speaker 1: year contract. One year managers typically get three or even four,
- 19:41Speaker 1: And in this case, it seems that Moreno wants to
- 19:46Speaker 1: keep his options open in case there's a lockout next
- 19:49Speaker 1: year and doesn't want to pay a manager in that circumstance.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I don't know that that is entirely his motivation. Maybe
- 19:55Speaker 1: he just wants to see whether Kurt Zuzuki can do
- 19:57Speaker 1: this job. But Suzuki enters his final year, Menazi in
- 20:01Speaker 1: the GM enters his final year. And here's the problem.
- 20:04Speaker 1: When you're on a one year deal as a manager.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Players know it, man, they know you're a laying duck,
- 20:10Speaker 1: and they know that your authority is only going to
- 20:13Speaker 1: extend so far. So Kurt Suzuki, who has a chance,
- 20:16Speaker 1: I'm sure to be a good manager, even though he's
- 20:18Speaker 1: never had a coaching or managing position. He's playing from
- 20:22Speaker 1: behind before he even starts, and that's no good.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Go ahead a lot before I get into my reasons, though,
- 20:27Speaker 2: let's follow up on that a little bit. Ken is
- 20:29Speaker 2: the reason to take the job just to get your
- 20:31Speaker 2: foot in the door as a manager, to say, hey,
- 20:34Speaker 2: it's on my resume now I'm a big league manager.
- 20:36Speaker 2: There's only thirty jobs in the bigs. What's Suzuki's incentive here?
- 20:41Speaker 1: I think it's just that Alana, You're right, And to me,
- 20:45Speaker 1: that's a little bit flawed logic because this franchise is
- 20:48Speaker 1: so difficult to win with with moreno running the team
- 20:50Speaker 1: the way he does. You inherit all the inherit, all
- 20:54Speaker 1: the problems that the previous managers all had, and it's
- 20:57Speaker 1: an uphill fight. I just don't see it ending well
- 21:01Speaker 1: for Kurt. And I hate saying that because I like Kurt.
- 21:03Speaker 1: He's a good baseball person. Obviously, he was a great
- 21:06Speaker 1: catcher for many years, a World Series champion, But he's
- 21:10Speaker 1: in tough here.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Let me ask you this, do you think the reason
- 21:13Speaker 2: Albert Poolholtz or Tory Hunter were no longer under consideration
- 21:18Speaker 2: is a they're like, I'm not only taking a year,
- 21:22Speaker 2: Or do you think Kurt Suzuki was more qualified just
- 21:25Speaker 2: being that he is a catcher and he's been in
- 21:29Speaker 2: the system already as a special assistant.
- 21:31Speaker 1: So was Toy. So I don't know that he's more
- 21:34Speaker 1: qualified than Tory in that regard with Pooholes, it seems
- 21:37Speaker 1: it was contractual. He's under contract to the Angels with
- 21:40Speaker 1: his personal service thing. He wanted some kind of arrangement
- 21:45Speaker 1: that Ardie Marino did not want to give him. Whether
- 21:47Speaker 1: it's years, money, whatever, the number or problem was not sure,
- 21:52Speaker 1: but that was the issue and Tory. I'm not sure
- 21:55Speaker 1: Tory would have taken one year, and I'm not sure
- 21:58Speaker 1: they just didn't see Suzuki as a bed fit as
- 22:00Speaker 1: a manager. I don't know the answer to that, but
- 22:03Speaker 1: given where this process started with Albert the favorite, it
- 22:06Speaker 1: was a surprising.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I would think a year deal is kind of
- 22:10Speaker 2: a slap in the face for me. Can the reason
- 22:13Speaker 2: is that just what you see, Kokuchi was saying that
- 22:15Speaker 2: the air conditioning did not work all year. This is
- 22:19Speaker 2: a major league franchise, guys, you know the general manager
- 22:23Speaker 2: plays the dumbest man ever. As far as an Angel's
- 22:27Speaker 2: post for HVAC help, what are we doing? I mean,
- 22:31Speaker 2: it's just it seems so ridiculous. You can't make this up.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Sam Blum, who covers the Angels for the Athletics, says
- 22:37Speaker 2: the Angels posted a job for an HVAC air conditioning
- 22:40Speaker 2: technician today today, what are we doing? You have a
- 22:44Speaker 2: major league club that doesn't have air conditioning in certain
- 22:47Speaker 2: areas of their clubhouse. I mean, it just seems unbelievable
- 22:51Speaker 2: that this continues to happen. But again, it's not just
- 22:54Speaker 2: this little and this is a minor issue, I guess.
- 22:57Speaker 2: I mean what you're going to talk about next, in
- 22:59Speaker 2: terms of the owner facing the franchise and long term
- 23:03Speaker 2: loyalist loyalists to testify, that's even a bigger issue in
- 23:08Speaker 2: terms of why this man could easily be dork of
- 23:10Speaker 2: a year.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Well, what you're talking about, Alana is the Tyler Skaggs
- 23:14Speaker 1: trial and the Angels are being sued by the family
- 23:18Speaker 1: of Skags. And we've been following this and being aware
- 23:21Speaker 1: of it, and had Ardi Moreno settled this lawsuit, then
- 23:25Speaker 1: Mike Trout wouldn't have had to testify, testify about some
- 23:28Speaker 1: uncomfortable things that he was a part of in the clubhouse.
- 23:31Speaker 1: To me, their longtime former PR man would not have
- 23:34Speaker 1: had to testify and basically said nothing. They wouldn't have
- 23:37Speaker 1: put all of these people in uncomfortable positions. Now, I
- 23:41Speaker 1: don't know what Ardi Moreno's thinking is there why he
- 23:43Speaker 1: wanted to proceed with the suit. Maybe he just feels
- 23:46Speaker 1: he's in the right here. The Angels are in the
- 23:47Speaker 1: right and we're not given in I can understand that.
- 23:50Speaker 1: But as a result of not going to a settlement,
- 23:55Speaker 1: here is where we are, and this is what has happened.
- 23:58Speaker 1: It's kind of laid bare what was going on with
- 24:00Speaker 1: the Angels for a few years there, and it's not
- 24:02Speaker 1: pretty at all.
- 24:04Speaker 2: My next thought here is Anthony Rendon, who I have
- 24:08Speaker 2: played more major league games then in the last four years.
- 24:11Speaker 2: It still owed thirty eight million dollars Ken Rosenthal, this
- 24:14Speaker 2: has to be one of the worst contracts in Major
- 24:17Speaker 2: League history in terms of time on the field versus
- 24:20Speaker 2: amount of money given.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I would agree with that a lot. It's certainly true.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Josh Apmel didn't work out too well for them, Albert
- 24:28Speaker 1: Pooholes did really work out too well for them. They
- 24:30Speaker 1: have not done well with some of their long term deals,
- 24:32Speaker 1: even Trout. You can argue they're not getting the return
- 24:36Speaker 1: there that they thought they were going to get initially.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So the way this franchise is run, to sum this
- 24:41Speaker 1: all up, in general, has been incompetently and we talk
- 24:46Speaker 1: about the Rockies a lot and how insular they are
- 24:49Speaker 1: and how they do things different than the rest of
- 24:51Speaker 1: the teams in Major League Baseball. The Rockies, seemingly under
- 24:55Speaker 1: Walker Montfort now are trying to at least hire a
- 24:58Speaker 1: general manager from the outside. It'll start being less insular.
- 25:02Speaker 1: The Angels, you look at them, it's the already show
- 25:05Speaker 1: all the time, And my goodness, when are we going
- 25:08Speaker 1: to see this team be a representative franchise again in
- 25:12Speaker 1: a large market? People talk about the Dodgers, this the
- 25:15Speaker 1: Dodgers that. Yeah, the Angels have a lot of the
- 25:17Speaker 1: same advantages the Dodgers do, and they squandered them, starting
- 25:21Speaker 1: with Otani, but including many other things. So it's just
- 25:25Speaker 1: a shame what has happened here, And it's a shame
- 25:28Speaker 1: what's happened with that team. It's tough to be a
- 25:30Speaker 1: fan of that club right now, and it's going to
- 25:32Speaker 1: be difficult until there's some real changes in either the
- 25:34Speaker 1: way Moreno operates or the sale of the club.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I was going to say. A sale
- 25:39Speaker 2: might be the only thing that saves this franchise. Ken Rosenthal,
- 25:42Speaker 2: what what if the Dodgers ended up signing Anthony Rindon.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Thank goodness he didn't want that Hollywood lifestyle because maybe
- 25:49Speaker 2: the Dodgers would not be in the World Series. I
- 25:51Speaker 2: know it doesn't come down to one guy. That being said,
- 25:53Speaker 2: we're going to say goodbye right now for our folks
- 25:57Speaker 2: watching us on TV. Thank you so much. We'll see
- 25:58Speaker 2: you next time. We have a couple more minutes with
- 26:01Speaker 2: the YouTube family right after this. All right, if you're
- 26:05Speaker 2: still with this, that means that you're on YouTube. We
- 26:07Speaker 2: appreciate you guys supporting us Ken Congratulations your twentieth World
- 26:11Speaker 2: Series for you on Fox. A great crew over there,
- 26:14Speaker 2: of course, not your twentieth World Series, but your twentieth
- 26:17Speaker 2: with them. That's exciting. I mean, tell us why you
- 26:21Speaker 2: still get the juice out of doing maybe that's not
- 26:23Speaker 2: a good phrase in baseball, while you still get jazzed up,
- 26:27Speaker 2: if you will, for covering the World Series. And I
- 26:30Speaker 2: would imagine there's still a big part of you that's
- 26:33Speaker 2: just a fan of this great game.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Yeah, that's basically it a lot, and the excitement comes
- 26:38Speaker 1: from this uncertainty and what's going to happen here and
- 26:42Speaker 1: the stories that we are going to get one way
- 26:44Speaker 1: or the other and that's what drives me always just
- 26:47Speaker 1: covering the stories and talking to the people and telling
- 26:50Speaker 1: those stories, whether television, print, however you want to do it,
- 26:54Speaker 1: that is what is it for me. And that's the
- 26:56Speaker 1: fun part. The competition of that, trying to be the
- 26:59Speaker 1: best you can be, trying to get things that other
- 27:02Speaker 1: people don't have, all of that. But before I even
- 27:05Speaker 1: go any further, actually forget going any further with me,
- 27:08Speaker 1: I want to mention our producer, Pete mccheska. This is
- 27:12Speaker 1: his final world series. He's done twenty two of them,
- 27:15Speaker 1: and he is going out with this World series. He's
- 27:17Speaker 1: going to continue to do football, but he has been
- 27:21Speaker 1: to me incredibly welcoming this whole time, and especially at
- 27:24Speaker 1: the start when they had not had a print reporter
- 27:27Speaker 1: at Fox do Sideline. Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. Of
- 27:31Speaker 1: course we're very supportive as well. But Pete, he's been
- 27:34Speaker 1: the guy for a long time and that job is
- 27:36Speaker 1: not easy. He does it extremely well and it's been
- 27:40Speaker 1: a joy working for him.
- 27:41Speaker 2: So yeah, that's great.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I hopefully we're still pet out with a really good
- 27:45Speaker 1: world series.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Let's put it badfully. It's entertaining and everything works in
- 27:50Speaker 2: the truck as it's supposed to work. Congratulations to Pete
- 27:53Speaker 2: and best of luck as you continue your career covering football.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Of course for Fox, I'm looking forward to just good games.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I want to be competitive, you know, I'm excited for
- 28:03Speaker 2: a lot of reasons. But this is the greatest game
- 28:05Speaker 2: in the world, and I'm just grateful that we get
- 28:07Speaker 2: to cover it, not only here unfair territory, but obviously
- 28:10Speaker 2: watching you and the guy's on Fox and talk about
- 28:12Speaker 2: the crew a little bit, Ken, I mean, it's incredible.
- 28:14Speaker 2: You have Big Poppy, you have obviously Derek Jeter, Hall
- 28:17Speaker 2: of famers, Kevin Burkhardt does a tremendous job you of
- 28:20Speaker 2: course for Ducci, and not to mention the guys in
- 28:23Speaker 2: the booth, Hall of Famer John Smoltz of course, and
- 28:25Speaker 2: our buddy with the Dodgers, Joe Davis. It's just a
- 28:27Speaker 2: great crew, it.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Is, and it's been that way ever since I've been there,
- 28:32Speaker 1: with Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. We have Bill Webb
- 28:35Speaker 1: at that time was the director. Now it's Matt Gangle.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Bill Webb was a revolutionary directory changed the way baseball
- 28:42Speaker 1: was shown on television, and Matt Gangle has taken it
- 28:45Speaker 1: to another level. I always look at it this way.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Alone it I feel like I'm part of an all
- 28:50Speaker 1: star team with this group. And it's not just the
- 28:53Speaker 1: people you just mentioned, and you know this from working
- 28:55Speaker 1: in TV. It's all of the people behind the scenes
- 28:58Speaker 1: in the truck manning the cameras, the audio people. Everyone
- 29:04Speaker 1: that works on these broadcasts is big time, really great
- 29:08Speaker 1: and I'm grateful just to be a part. Honestly.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Yeah, well good luck. I can't wait to watch your
- 29:13Speaker 2: coverage tonight. We appreciate it. Game one of the World
- 29:16Speaker 2: Series on Fox of course, everybody tuning in, thanks for
- 29:19Speaker 2: watching and listening today, everybody, we appreciate it. Fair Territory
- 29:22Speaker 2: is back on Monday. Today's Foul Territory coming up. Todd Frazier,
- 29:26Speaker 2: Eric Krat, Scott braun Has, John Smolt, Kevin Plar and Braves.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Reporter Brant mccauleay. Don't forget both Foul Territory and Dodgers
- 29:34Speaker 2: Terry with myself and Clymphesias, we'll have live postgame shows
- 29:38Speaker 2: right after every World Series game. Let's do it.
