- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with I Heart Radio. Welcome to a Wednesday edition on
- 0:20Speaker 1: Super wild Card Week on of NFL that one NFL
- 0:24Speaker 1: that works. Barnews from the Los Angeles. My name is
- 0:26Speaker 1: Andrews Siciliano. We have an update from Miami on the quarterback,
- 0:30Speaker 1: an update from Baltimore on the quarterback. But we start
- 0:33Speaker 1: this show with more great news, more great news about
- 0:38Speaker 1: Tamar Hamlin. The Bills made this statement this morning. He's
- 0:41Speaker 1: going home, discharged from his hospital in Buffalo, where he
- 0:46Speaker 1: had been since Monday after being discharged from the hospital
- 0:49Speaker 1: in Cincinnati. Tamar Hamlin is on his way home to
- 0:55Speaker 1: continue his recovery, surrounded by friends and family and the
- 0:58Speaker 1: comfort of his own home. Yeah, you know, we're you know,
- 1:05Speaker 1: obviously grateful first and foremost at his home and with
- 1:08Speaker 1: his parents and his brother, which is great. Um, I'm
- 1:12Speaker 1: sure it's felt like a long time since he's been
- 1:14Speaker 1: able to be home naturally there, and um, I'm sure
- 1:17Speaker 1: it's a great feeling. And yeah, well we'll leave it
- 1:19Speaker 1: up to him. You know, his health is first and
- 1:21Speaker 1: foremost on our mind as far as his situation goes.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And then when he feels ready. Um, you know we
- 1:27Speaker 1: welcome him back is as he feels ready. Cam Wolfe
- 1:32Speaker 1: is ready for us. Now he's in Miami, where we
- 1:34Speaker 1: will get to the Dolphins quarterback news coming up shortly.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But Cam, as many of you know, spent all of
- 1:38Speaker 1: last week in front of that hospital where DeMar Hamlin
- 1:41Speaker 1: was trying to recovery or recover rather after Monday night, Cam,
- 1:45Speaker 1: I don't know that nine days later any of us
- 1:47Speaker 1: saw this coming. It is amazing news. Yeah, DeMar Hamlin
- 1:51Speaker 1: is home. For words that are amazing given what has
- 1:55Speaker 1: been unknown for much of the last nine days. And
- 1:58Speaker 1: I spoke with one of the Mark Hamlin's family members,
- 2:01Speaker 1: Dory and Glenn, who simply texted me the words blessed.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And about an hour ago I was on the phone
- 2:06Speaker 1: with me with the phone with him, and he just
- 2:08Speaker 1: shared just how much of a roller coaster these weeks
- 2:11Speaker 1: have been. He said they're packing up to drive to
- 2:14Speaker 1: Buffalo themselves to join Damar and his parents Nina and Mario,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and his uh brother Demere in his apartment and said
- 2:23Speaker 1: they want to share this moment with him. And he
- 2:24Speaker 1: said I'm playing a party and about a week not
- 2:27Speaker 1: only to celebrate DeMar's recovery, but also celebrate just us
- 2:31Speaker 1: as a family being able to exhale. And everyone is
- 2:34Speaker 1: feeling the joy of this moment. I was in the
- 2:36Speaker 1: Dolphins locker room an hour ago when I had a
- 2:38Speaker 1: player asked me great to see how DeMars doing. Any
- 2:41Speaker 1: further update. You know, this is their opponents this week
- 2:43Speaker 1: and they're still asking as well. So we couldn't have
- 2:46Speaker 1: any better news in regards to Damar. And you know,
- 2:49Speaker 1: Sean McDermott mentioned maybe whether or not he would be
- 2:52Speaker 1: out there. You know that will be up to DeMar's family.
- 2:54Speaker 1: They're gonna be taking in charge of his treatment going forward.
- 2:58Speaker 1: But no matter the decision, and when we see Damar publicly,
- 3:02Speaker 1: this news is amazing everything we want to to see
- 3:05Speaker 1: and the joy from the family I can share is
- 3:07Speaker 1: something they've absolutely been waiting for. To share this moment
- 3:10Speaker 1: with him at home. Imagine the chills um if he
- 3:14Speaker 1: were to somehow be at that game on Sunday that
- 3:16Speaker 1: remains to be seen, or a couple of days away here,
- 3:19Speaker 1: but something to potentially hope for him returning to his teammates.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Thank you, Camp Wolf Live in Miami now for the
- 3:25Speaker 1: situation in the building in which campuses. We can tell
- 3:27Speaker 1: you infinitively that Teddy Bridgewater is not going to play
- 3:31Speaker 1: in that game Sunday one pm in Buffalo. Mike McDaniel
- 3:35Speaker 1: ruled to out today that I said, Teddy, I meant
- 3:38Speaker 1: to A two A tongue of baloa is out this
- 3:41Speaker 1: week here for the Miami Dolphins. He still has not
- 3:43Speaker 1: cleared concussion protocol. As for Teddy Bridgewater, now he's working
- 3:51Speaker 1: to prepare himself to be capable on Sunday. UM. But
- 3:58Speaker 1: as a result of that, he can't afford any setbacks
- 4:03Speaker 1: or um really anything that's conflicting against the healium process
- 4:10Speaker 1: in the week. As a result, UM, we will be
- 4:15Speaker 1: approaching uh the game today, the Wednesday game as Skyler
- 4:23Speaker 1: Thompson as our starting quarterback. So Mike aarafolo I rappaport
- 4:28Speaker 1: and we get some clarity here on a Wednesday. At
- 4:32Speaker 1: least we have that Mike McDaniel has become very good
- 4:36Speaker 1: at speaking very specifically about injuries that you know he
- 4:39Speaker 1: does not want to talk about. So let's get through
- 4:41Speaker 1: them to a talk about officially ruled out. Still in
- 4:44Speaker 1: the NFL's concussion protocol has not been cleared for football activity,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and as they are taking this day to day, and
- 4:50Speaker 1: it seemed receiving updates only as it relates to today.
- 4:54Speaker 1: We do not know anything about TWA for next week.
- 4:56Speaker 1: We also do not know anything about Teddy Bridgewater for today.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And it was very specific Mike that Mike McDaniels said,
- 5:03Speaker 1: if the game were to start today, which it clearly
- 5:06Speaker 1: is not, then to be Skoyler Thompson. Teddy Bridge Warner,
- 5:09Speaker 1: from my understanding, was throwing short passes by the end
- 5:12Speaker 1: of last week. If he's able to progress to throwing
- 5:14Speaker 1: longer passes, not that he throws long passes in games anyway,
- 5:17Speaker 1: but if he's able to progress, then you might see
- 5:19Speaker 1: him out later in the week, or you might even
- 5:21Speaker 1: see him starting in the game this weekend. Until then,
- 5:25Speaker 1: Skoylert Thompson, who's got plenty of experience, it seems, will
- 5:29Speaker 1: be planned to be the starter for this weekend. Yeah,
- 5:33Speaker 1: so you're gonna have to rely on your running game,
- 5:35Speaker 1: You're gonna have to rely on your defense because Buffalo
- 5:38Speaker 1: certainly is not going to play the kind of game
- 5:39Speaker 1: that Jets played the other day, which allowed Skyler Thompson
- 5:42Speaker 1: to just kind of manage it and lead him to
- 5:45Speaker 1: an eleven to six victory. Uh, that will not cut
- 5:49Speaker 1: it in this one. Then the Dolphins went toe to
- 5:51Speaker 1: toe with the Bills a couple of weeks ago. Offensively,
- 5:55Speaker 1: can't imagine Skyler Thompson playing that kind of game. That's
- 5:57Speaker 1: the kind of game with two a Tagabolo at quarterback
- 5:59Speaker 1: that they've played this season. So it's gonna be good defense,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and it's gotta be big home runs from the running game,
- 6:06Speaker 1: which Mike McDaniel has been able to draw up before.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Let's see if you can do it in this situation. Okay,
- 6:10Speaker 1: so maybe it looks like likely Skyler Thompson here for
- 6:13Speaker 1: the Dolphins coming up on Sunday in Buffalo. Thank you Ian,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and thank you Mike. And the offense is certainly different.
- 6:19Speaker 1: The numbers show you that without two a tongue of
- 6:21Speaker 1: valo with pretty good. Without yeah, we're talking a ten
- 6:26Speaker 1: point a game difference. Ten points. Go back to Camp
- 6:31Speaker 1: Wolf in Miami. Bucky Brooks joins this conversation as well.
- 6:35Speaker 1: What Mike said, Cam play defense, run the football easier
- 6:39Speaker 1: said than done because two of back their changes everything.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yea Andrew players know that too. Of makes this offense differently,
- 6:46Speaker 1: they were one of the best offenses in the league
- 6:48Speaker 1: with two under center. And when I spoke over he Moster,
- 6:51Speaker 1: he just told me how the last Bills game, we're
- 6:53Speaker 1: hidden on every cylinder. I figured we could beat any
- 6:56Speaker 1: team in the league with two of throwing like this
- 6:59Speaker 1: running the ball. But now they'll have to move forward
- 7:01Speaker 1: without to it. And I can tell you just about
- 7:03Speaker 1: twenty minutes ago, Teddy Bridgewater was out at practice. He
- 7:06Speaker 1: was throwing about fifteen and twenty yards passed his warm
- 7:09Speaker 1: up throws, not with a ton of velocity. But as
- 7:11Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel mentioned, the plan seems to as of now
- 7:15Speaker 1: have Skyler Thompson, the rookie has quarterback, and they believe
- 7:18Speaker 1: in Skylar, but they know that it will have to
- 7:20Speaker 1: be everyone else who steps up that running game. I
- 7:22Speaker 1: mentioned they had a hundred and eighty eight yards that
- 7:25Speaker 1: Saturday and that December Saturday game against the Bills. They'll
- 7:28Speaker 1: need to repeat performance to pull off this upset. And
- 7:30Speaker 1: what makes it a little bit more difficult is that
- 7:32Speaker 1: Raheem Mostered, the catalyst for that, has a broken thumb.
- 7:36Speaker 1: McDaniel said today he'd be a fool to rule him
- 7:38Speaker 1: out but it is a serious injury. So that's something
- 7:41Speaker 1: to watch as we get towards the end of the week. Yeah,
- 7:45Speaker 1: it's a huge challenge for the Milami Dolphins are going
- 7:47Speaker 1: there with Skoylett Thompson, and so when you think about
- 7:49Speaker 1: Scotlett Thompson taking over, you have a rookie. He's gonna
- 7:52Speaker 1: be dealing with nerves and so Mike mc jame's gonna
- 7:54Speaker 1: have to do a great job of leaning into the
- 7:56Speaker 1: running game and finding a way to make enough passes
- 7:59Speaker 1: to back the Buffalo Bills off. The good thing is
- 8:01Speaker 1: you have Jalen Waddle and Tarik Hill, two of the
- 8:04Speaker 1: best catching run specialists that in the National Football League.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Look for a bunch of bubble screens, a bunch of
- 8:10Speaker 1: smoke screens, quick things to allow those guys to get
- 8:12Speaker 1: loose in space, and they'll use some of the short
- 8:14Speaker 1: passing game to compliment a running attack that must be
- 8:18Speaker 1: at a dominant level for them to have a chance
- 8:20Speaker 1: to beat the Buffalo last time around, again in Buffalo,
- 8:23Speaker 1: Raheem Mostard had nearly a hundred and forty yards on
- 8:25Speaker 1: the ground, but his status is very much up in
- 8:27Speaker 1: the air with that broken thumb. Another one to follow her.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Another injury to follow for the Dolphins heading into Sunday.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Thank you Bucky and thank you cam Meantime at Baltimore,
- 8:35Speaker 1: there's an injury to follow as well with Lamar Jackson,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and the news is not that encouraging. Uphill battle to play.
- 8:42Speaker 1: That's the word from our crew. Uphill battle to play Sunday.
- 8:46Speaker 1: If he can't go, you think it's gonna be Tyler
- 8:50Speaker 1: Huntley who was unable to play as well Week A teen,
- 8:53Speaker 1: Judy Batista, Mike Aarre follow Ian Rappaport with us. Now,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I mean, this is the question here and when are
- 9:00Speaker 1: we going to see him? And if he's on the
- 9:02Speaker 1: practice field in a matter of moments, maybe that will
- 9:04Speaker 1: be in urging Mike, what do you hold on? I
- 9:07Speaker 1: was gonna go to Ian first hands. I just want
- 9:10Speaker 1: to make sure he sees it. There you go from
- 9:11Speaker 1: our buddy Jeff's rebiak uh. Lamar Jackson again not practicing
- 9:16Speaker 1: for Ravens. It's been thirty eight days since he was
- 9:18Speaker 1: last taking part in practice. Tyler Huntley on the field
- 9:21Speaker 1: but not throwing with his sore shoulders. Take it from there.
- 9:24Speaker 1: He is, yeah, alright, so yes that I would say
- 9:28Speaker 1: that is the update that we expected. Started to get
- 9:30Speaker 1: word late last night that despite the optimism that has
- 9:33Speaker 1: been shown in various places, including John Harbaugh at the
- 9:37Speaker 1: podium last week, including some other places, it just did
- 9:40Speaker 1: not seem like Lamar Jackson was going to be able
- 9:43Speaker 1: to play in this game. I've spoken to people who
- 9:45Speaker 1: have watched him. His knee is still not quite right.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think he has been hoping. He has been doing
- 9:50Speaker 1: everything he can, but is a PCL injury. These sometimes
- 9:54Speaker 1: can take longer for UH, for players to feel normal,
- 9:58Speaker 1: And for Lamar Jackson, Mike who needs to be who
- 10:01Speaker 1: is as athletic and electric as anyone wants to feel right,
- 10:05Speaker 1: does not feel right. So by not being out there
- 10:07Speaker 1: for Wednesday's practice, seems like there is a pretty good
- 10:10Speaker 1: chance that he is not the starting quarterback for the
- 10:13Speaker 1: Ravens this week. Yeah, and Tyler Huntley, has been managing
- 10:16Speaker 1: that shoulder tendonitis since before the season, was unable to
- 10:19Speaker 1: go last week, which meant it was Anthony Brown against
- 10:22Speaker 1: the Bengals. Could be Anthony Brown again. That's the situation
- 10:25Speaker 1: that we're going to have to watch. But for Lamar Jackson, UH,
- 10:28Speaker 1: it's He's done some work he hasn't practiced, but he's
- 10:31Speaker 1: tried to do some things, uh, to see where he
- 10:34Speaker 1: is in his rehab. It just sounds like he's just
- 10:36Speaker 1: not right. He's just not there and saying if I'm
- 10:39Speaker 1: not feeling right, I'm not going to go out there.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And so it's not just a situation where the medical
- 10:44Speaker 1: staff is going to make a call. It's gonna be
- 10:46Speaker 1: the medical staff in consultation with Lamar Jackson, uh, given
- 10:50Speaker 1: the clearance to say, hey, I can go out there.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I feel like myself and I feel like I'm not
- 10:54Speaker 1: going to injure myself further. So that's kind of where
- 10:57Speaker 1: we are. And it's just an indication that he's not
- 10:59Speaker 1: gonna be able to play this week. Dude. Well, if
- 11:02Speaker 1: he doesn't play, it's pretty dire for the offense. That's
- 11:05Speaker 1: an understatement. Since he got hurt, they have scored seventeen
- 11:09Speaker 1: or fewer points per game. They're averaging in that span
- 11:12Speaker 1: twelve and a half points per game. The only team
- 11:15Speaker 1: that has scored fewer points than them in that span
- 11:18Speaker 1: is the New York Jets, and we know how dire
- 11:20Speaker 1: their quarterback situation has been. Towards the end of the season,
- 11:23Speaker 1: the Ravens have scored only I want to read this.
- 11:26Speaker 1: This is from NFL research, seventy five total points over
- 11:29Speaker 1: their last six regular season games. That's the second fewest
- 11:33Speaker 1: points scored in the final six weeks of any team
- 11:36Speaker 1: that made the playoffs in the Super Bowl era. So
- 11:40Speaker 1: needless to say, if it is not Lamar on the field,
- 11:43Speaker 1: they're going to have to lean even more on that defense,
- 11:46Speaker 1: try to slow job Er down, which actually they've had
- 11:48Speaker 1: good success doing during the season. Have to try to
- 11:51Speaker 1: get some turnovers, give the offense some extra opportunities, very
- 11:53Speaker 1: very difficult. So fewest points down the stretch here for
- 11:56Speaker 1: a team that makes the playoffs in at least fifty
- 11:59Speaker 1: seven years and doesn't look like the Ravens are gonna
- 12:03Speaker 1: get Lamar Jackson back to fix that this week. Thank you,
- 12:06Speaker 1: Judy uh Ian, Mike you stick around, real quicker. Let's
- 12:10Speaker 1: get the coaching views out of the way. These are
- 12:12Speaker 1: the five openings as it stands, the Texas and the Cardinals,
- 12:15Speaker 1: the most recent Houston firing Lovely Smith Sunday night, Arizona
- 12:19Speaker 1: firing Cliff Kingsbury on Monday morning. We want to focus
- 12:23Speaker 1: on the Carolina Panthers. The team here on the bottom
- 12:25Speaker 1: of the list. Steve Wilkes certainly is up for the job.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Ian he did a heck of a job as the interim.
- 12:31Speaker 1: What else is going on in Carolina, Well, the interview
- 12:35Speaker 1: process is ongoing. You mentioned Steve Wilkes, he has already interviewed.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Jim Caldwell has already interviewed as well. And the Carolina
- 12:42Speaker 1: Panthers seemed to be going on two different tracks. They
- 12:45Speaker 1: have one track. The young offensive assist is just put
- 12:48Speaker 1: in a request to speak with Kellen Moore, the Cowboys
- 12:51Speaker 1: offensive coordinator, and their list. Basically, Mike is a who's
- 12:55Speaker 1: who in young offensive dude. So, Kelen Moore, you have
- 12:58Speaker 1: Ken Dorrisy from the Buffalo Bills, you have Mike Kafka
- 13:01Speaker 1: from the Giants, of Shane Stike from the Eagles, Ben
- 13:03Speaker 1: Johnson from the Lines, all the impressive young offensive guys,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and then you have some veterans, uh, like, for instance,
- 13:11Speaker 1: Jim Caldwell, Uh, and like uh, Steve Wilkes. So we'll
- 13:16Speaker 1: see which direction the Panthers are going. But it seems
- 13:18Speaker 1: two different paths here. Mike Uh. Yeah, and he got
- 13:22Speaker 1: Frank Reich, as you mentioned, he's the He's interviewing today
- 13:26Speaker 1: for that job, Reich, let go by the Colts. Uh.
- 13:29Speaker 1: They brought in Jeff Saturday. You may have heard about
- 13:31Speaker 1: that and the team kind of went like like that.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Frank Brake, I think it's still got the jobs to
- 13:36Speaker 1: be a good head coach in this league. Uh, with
- 13:39Speaker 1: a settled quarterback position, that would be nice to see
- 13:42Speaker 1: what he could do with that. Certainly did not get
- 13:44Speaker 1: that with the Colts. Uh, and the Panthers looking for
- 13:46Speaker 1: a quarterback, Let's see how they go about that. But
- 13:49Speaker 1: Reike interviewing for the job with Panther's owner David Tepper.
- 13:52Speaker 1: That's an interesting mix of personalities. I wonder how that
- 13:55Speaker 1: two of them would work. Uh. Tepper seems to be
- 13:58Speaker 1: a little bit you're laughing. Tepper is a little bit
- 14:00Speaker 1: more brash. He's a little bit more out there. Frank
- 14:02Speaker 1: a little a little bit more reserved. But uh, maybe
- 14:05Speaker 1: they're trying to figure out how that would work today.
- 14:06Speaker 1: In that conversation they're having the first one for Frank
- 14:10Speaker 1: break Ian you want to explain that face there there? Well,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I mean no, no, it's my regular face, my standard face.
- 14:23Speaker 1: This is what you got, Ian private. All right, you're
- 14:31Speaker 1: watching NFL Now NFL that worked a lot of quarterback
- 14:34Speaker 1: news here today. Let's start in Baltimore, where Lamar Jackson
- 14:38Speaker 1: right now is not on the practice field. From reporters, President,
- 14:41Speaker 1: he is not out there. And this comes after Ian
- 14:44Speaker 1: Rappaport Mike Arrifolo told you earlier that Jackson faces a
- 14:48Speaker 1: quote uphill battle to play this week and if he
- 14:51Speaker 1: can't go, it's likely Tyler Huntley. But Tyler Huntley wasn't
- 14:54Speaker 1: thrown either. Today when reporters were president practice in Baltimore,
- 14:57Speaker 1: we could say this definitively to a tongue of BLOA
- 15:01Speaker 1: is out this week. Mike McDaniel made that clear. Eddie said,
- 15:05Speaker 1: Teddy Bridgewater, maybe not. So they're preparing as if Skyler
- 15:12Speaker 1: Thompson is going to play Skyler Thompson rookie on the
- 15:17Speaker 1: road in Buffalo Kurt Warner against the Bills. How does
- 15:22Speaker 1: that change what Miami has got to do to somehow
- 15:26Speaker 1: pull this off? Well, And I'm not sure it changes
- 15:31Speaker 1: a whole lot. I mean, obviously, you know you gotta
- 15:34Speaker 1: look to the defense, and I felt coming into this game,
- 15:36Speaker 1: even when you watch the first two matchups against these
- 15:40Speaker 1: two teams, that is really about the defense. The defense
- 15:42Speaker 1: has to step up and make some big plays. In
- 15:45Speaker 1: that first game when Miami got the win, that they
- 15:48Speaker 1: got a big sack fumble inside the ten yard line
- 15:51Speaker 1: set them up for their first touchdown. And and that's
- 15:53Speaker 1: the kind of stuff that it's going to take. I
- 15:55Speaker 1: don't believe you can expect Skyler Thompson to go out
- 15:58Speaker 1: there and make big play after big play, although he's
- 16:01Speaker 1: gonna have to make some in both games. Again, the
- 16:04Speaker 1: Miami offense had to make big plays to stay in
- 16:07Speaker 1: those games. But this is gonna fall on the defense
- 16:09Speaker 1: to come after them and when they blitz, to have
- 16:12Speaker 1: to get home and create some negative plays for the Bills. Okay,
- 16:15Speaker 1: create some negative plays and and and hopefully find a
- 16:17Speaker 1: way to stay close in that game as they have
- 16:19Speaker 1: in both these other games. These two teams have split obviously,
- 16:23Speaker 1: with the roads team rather the home team winning each
- 16:26Speaker 1: Let's get back to the Lamar Jackson thing we're talking
- 16:28Speaker 1: off there earlier Kurt Brian Boldinger and the about the PCO. Obviously,
- 16:33Speaker 1: the run game is such a huge part, his mobility
- 16:36Speaker 1: is such a huge part. It is baked in to
- 16:39Speaker 1: this offense. And maybe if he was a stationary quarterback.
- 16:42Speaker 1: He could stand back there and wear a big brace,
- 16:44Speaker 1: but that's not him. And so if he's out there
- 16:48Speaker 1: and he's immobile, Kurt, you have to fundamentally change the offense.
- 16:53Speaker 1: And so now you're trying to win with Tyler Huntley,
- 16:55Speaker 1: and that is a massive challenge for them, well, because
- 16:59Speaker 1: it is two fold. I mean, first and foremost that
- 17:02Speaker 1: you don't have Lamar Jackson, and Lamar jacks And is
- 17:05Speaker 1: the difference maker in any and every game. But you
- 17:08Speaker 1: mentioned it, this offense has built a certain way, and
- 17:12Speaker 1: so not only do you not have Lamar Jackson, but
- 17:15Speaker 1: you don't have the ability to adjust your offense to
- 17:17Speaker 1: become something different. You don't have the personnel. Uh, And
- 17:22Speaker 1: so where you might have some success spreading a team
- 17:25Speaker 1: out or doing something different to play more to the
- 17:28Speaker 1: strengths of a Tyler Huntley, you can't do that either
- 17:31Speaker 1: because you have this offense built one particular way around
- 17:35Speaker 1: that one particular guy. And so such an unfortunate situation
- 17:39Speaker 1: for the Baltimore Ravens because I think they have a
- 17:42Speaker 1: really really good football team. Their defense is really good.
- 17:44Speaker 1: We'll keep them in a lot of games if they're
- 17:46Speaker 1: running the football well, they have a chance to beat
- 17:48Speaker 1: anybody in the a f C. But I just don't
- 17:51Speaker 1: know if they're going to be able to do that
- 17:53Speaker 1: with Tyler Huntley because their offense does have to change
- 17:56Speaker 1: so much and they're not built to do a lot
- 17:58Speaker 1: of things differently. No, they're not. This is what they are,
- 18:01Speaker 1: this is how they've been built, this is why they
- 18:03Speaker 1: have been successful. And about Lamar being the guy that
- 18:06Speaker 1: we've always seen, it's hard to see that continuing. All right,
- 18:09Speaker 1: let's get to Brock Purty. Curd. I feel like we
- 18:11Speaker 1: asked this question every week, but now that we headed
- 18:13Speaker 1: into the postseason, he hasn't lost to start their ten
- 18:16Speaker 1: and oh down the stretcher ten game winning streak. Have
- 18:19Speaker 1: you seen any signs, any signs that Brock Purtty may
- 18:25Speaker 1: come down to Earth. Well, no, I haven't. Um you know,
- 18:31Speaker 1: simply from the standpoint that I don't believe this team
- 18:35Speaker 1: is ever gonna have to ask him to carry them
- 18:38Speaker 1: with his right arm. So he's going to get to
- 18:40Speaker 1: be a complementary piece. When you get to be a
- 18:42Speaker 1: complementary piece, you don't feel like you have to make
- 18:45Speaker 1: every single throw. When you need to throw it away,
- 18:47Speaker 1: you can throw it away when you want to tuck
- 18:49Speaker 1: it and run and get four or five yards instead
- 18:51Speaker 1: of trying to force it down the field. You feel
- 18:53Speaker 1: like you can do that. Punting is okay with this team.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And that's not to say that Brock isn't playing good
- 18:59Speaker 1: football because he's processing things well, he's making the right decisions,
- 19:03Speaker 1: he's making big throw within a game. But I think
- 19:07Speaker 1: where it can really catch up to you is when
- 19:09Speaker 1: you're forced to drop back and have to play drop
- 19:12Speaker 1: back football time and time and time again. And I
- 19:16Speaker 1: don't first see when I look at the teams that
- 19:18Speaker 1: they're playing against, that they're necessarily going to have to
- 19:21Speaker 1: do that, or maybe not until the NFC Championship game.
- 19:24Speaker 1: So I believe Brock Purdy is going to play well
- 19:26Speaker 1: and play within himself and allow the team around him
- 19:29Speaker 1: to help him win football games. Let's transition here to
- 19:32Speaker 1: Dak Prescott. And before I ask the question, I want
- 19:35Speaker 1: everyone to know that Kurt has an in depth breakdown
- 19:38Speaker 1: of Dak Prescott on his Twitter feed and on his
- 19:41Speaker 1: YouTube page. But Kurt, if you could summarize for the
- 19:44Speaker 1: TV viewers here, what do you see with Dak Prescott
- 19:48Speaker 1: and all the picts of late. Well, what I see
- 19:52Speaker 1: with Dak Prescott is him not getting his eyes in
- 19:55Speaker 1: the right spot to start a play. It's so important
- 19:58Speaker 1: for a quarterback to understand what he's seeing and get
- 20:02Speaker 1: his eyes to the proper place to start his progressions,
- 20:05Speaker 1: to start his reads, to get his feet lined up
- 20:08Speaker 1: for the throws that he needs to make. And too
- 20:10Speaker 1: often I'm seeing Dac with his eyes in the wrong place.
- 20:13Speaker 1: And so once your eyes get in the wrong place,
- 20:16Speaker 1: now you're trying to play catch up because you don't
- 20:18Speaker 1: have a specific read that you're working through based off
- 20:22Speaker 1: of where you should have been to start that play.
- 20:24Speaker 1: And so that to me is the problem. Doc. I've
- 20:27Speaker 1: seen him plenty of times in his career get his
- 20:29Speaker 1: eyes in the right place and play really, really good football.
- 20:33Speaker 1: That's what I'm going to be watching for on Monday night.
- 20:35Speaker 1: The confusion from the Tampa Bay defense. Does he on
- 20:38Speaker 1: particular looks get his eyes in the right spot where
- 20:42Speaker 1: he can play football and process correctly, or does he
- 20:45Speaker 1: have the same issues he's had the last few weeks
- 20:47Speaker 1: where he starts in the wrong place, he tries to
- 20:50Speaker 1: play catchup and it leads to a lot of those
- 20:52Speaker 1: interceptions that we're seeing he has thrown a pick in
- 20:54Speaker 1: seven consecutive games here as the Cowboys are coming off
- 20:57Speaker 1: to be blue. Their worst game of the year against
- 21:00Speaker 1: the Commanders is now. They play Monday night in Tampa.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. Always appreciate you in the
- 21:06Speaker 1: quarterback room. Thank you. Pretty good quarterback matchup young quarterbacks
- 21:11Speaker 1: coming up Saturday in Jacksonville. It's the only game this
- 21:15Speaker 1: week featuring two first round quarterbacks. That is assuming Lamar
- 21:19Speaker 1: Jackson does not play. It is also a rematch of
- 21:21Speaker 1: Week three, the Jaguars took it to the Chargers here
- 21:24Speaker 1: in l A. You know, Trevior's really had an outstanding
- 21:28Speaker 1: season and we knew that. You know, in the first
- 21:30Speaker 1: game he played a really good game against US. Uh
- 21:32Speaker 1: and you know, really he has done a nice job
- 21:34Speaker 1: leading that team down the stretch to help get him
- 21:36Speaker 1: in the playoffs. So, um, you know, they're they're very
- 21:39Speaker 1: complete offense, they're balanced, um, well coached, and um, we
- 21:43Speaker 1: definitely definitely have our full respect. They got some guys back.
- 21:45Speaker 1: You know, Joey Boss on the edge is a great
- 21:48Speaker 1: player and played a little bit against US but got hurt.
- 21:51Speaker 1: So um, you know he obviously is is really good
- 21:54Speaker 1: at getting after the quarterback and effecting the game, so
- 21:58Speaker 1: things like that. And they just got a bunch of
- 22:00Speaker 1: players really all over the field. Derwin is flying around,
- 22:03Speaker 1: great great player. We played against him earlier in the year,
- 22:05Speaker 1: so there's some challenges for us UM. And yeah, it's exciting.
- 22:09Speaker 1: They got a really good, really good defense. Trevor Lawrence
- 22:13Speaker 1: laid out some of the differences here high there Bridge
- 22:14Speaker 1: of Condon, Live with the Chargers thirty eight to ten.
- 22:18Speaker 1: A lot has changed since Week three, Andrew, Let's take
- 22:22Speaker 1: a trip down memory lane. Chargers fans don't want to
- 22:24Speaker 1: go there, but I want to put this in perspective.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Twenty eight point loss a horrible loss for this Chargers team.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Week three. That was the first game that Justin Herbert
- 22:33Speaker 1: was playing after fracturing his rib cartilage. Keenan Allen, Corey
- 22:37Speaker 1: Lindsley were inactive for that game. Rare shawns Later, Jalen
- 22:41Speaker 1: guy In, and Joey Bosa all getting hurt during that game.
- 22:44Speaker 1: So so much has changed. It's gonna look very different
- 22:47Speaker 1: on the field on Saturday for this Chargers team, but
- 22:50Speaker 1: also for the Jacks. Trevor Lawrence, you heard Brandon Staley
- 22:53Speaker 1: say there, he's had an outstanding season and he's done
- 22:55Speaker 1: such a good job of getting this team to this point.
- 22:58Speaker 1: So how does this Chargers team beat a Jack's team
- 23:01Speaker 1: on a five game winning streak right now? It's gonna
- 23:04Speaker 1: come by putting pressure on quarterback Trevor Lawrence. That game
- 23:07Speaker 1: week three, Joey Bosa only played in thirteen snaps because
- 23:11Speaker 1: he did, of course get hurt. The Chargers defense only
- 23:13Speaker 1: pressured Lawrence about his drop packs drop backs. They allowed
- 23:18Speaker 1: three touchdowns he threw for over two fifty yards. So
- 23:21Speaker 1: having Joey Bosa back and putting pressure having that pass
- 23:25Speaker 1: rush on Saturday is going to make a huge difference.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I know there's a lot of concern because Bosa left
- 23:30Speaker 1: the game in Denver with an injury. He will pop
- 23:33Speaker 1: up on the injury report this week, Brandon Staley says,
- 23:36Speaker 1: but he's going to be a full participant. So good
- 23:38Speaker 1: news there for the Chargers in this pass rush all right,
- 23:40Speaker 1: as they hope to have him on the field Saturday.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And a big difference from Week three is that this
- 23:44Speaker 1: game is going to be a Jacksonville as opposed to
- 23:46Speaker 1: l A. Condon Live with the chart let's give Geno
- 23:57Speaker 1: Smith some credit. Hair as we see Brock Purty, we
- 23:59Speaker 1: spoke at him earlier obviously with Kurt Warner. There is
- 24:03Speaker 1: another quarterback in this game. Here are coming up the
- 24:05Speaker 1: first game of the weekend. There he is. It is
- 24:08Speaker 1: Gino Smith and the Seattle Seahawks, who, yes, bound a
- 24:11Speaker 1: way to get in. They have put together a fantastic season.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Yes they needed help from the lines, but they're happy
- 24:16Speaker 1: to be here and they get round free trying now
- 24:21Speaker 1: to beat the Forty Islands. It's a terrific matchup. You know,
- 24:25Speaker 1: you played the team that's this good in in your
- 24:28Speaker 1: division and with this much familiarity. Um, this is really
- 24:32Speaker 1: a chess chess match in a lot of ways. For
- 24:34Speaker 1: the coaches, Um, it's just ball for the players, but
- 24:40Speaker 1: a lot of respects for who were playing and how
- 24:41Speaker 1: they've done in their season and the guys they have
- 24:43Speaker 1: on their team and and uh what they've accomplished. It's
- 24:46Speaker 1: it's uh, you know, being division champion is a big
- 24:49Speaker 1: deal around here. Um. You know, they're probably one of
- 24:51Speaker 1: our in my mind, I think, biggest robbery. Um, but
- 24:54Speaker 1: for this season is gonna be our third time playing them,
- 24:56Speaker 1: so all I know it's gonna be hard to be
- 24:59Speaker 1: It's hard to be the team three times. I feel
- 25:01Speaker 1: like we've our mentality. We've been playing playoff games for
- 25:03Speaker 1: a long time and the pressure is always on, and
- 25:07Speaker 1: I think Brock takes it into every game and this game.
- 25:09Speaker 1: If you want to sit and think about all the
- 25:11Speaker 1: outside stuff, I'm sure you can psych yourself out out.
- 25:14Speaker 1: But that's the only thing I would say through experience
- 25:17Speaker 1: of it is once you get on the field, there's
- 25:19Speaker 1: absolutely nothing different. So whether it's a playoff game, whether
- 25:21Speaker 1: it's a Super Bowl, and all you can do is
- 25:23Speaker 1: control the athletic sporting event that you're involved in, the
- 25:28Speaker 1: athletic sporting event that you're involved in. All Right, Kyle
- 25:31Speaker 1: Shanahan with that, James Palmer, Omar Louise with us to
- 25:34Speaker 1: talk this one. James. It is the first time these
- 25:36Speaker 1: two teams have met the postseason since that Richard Sherman
- 25:39Speaker 1: viral moment after the two thousand thirteen NFC Championship game.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I know we've spoken so much about Brock Purty. That defense,
- 25:46Speaker 1: though for the forty Niners, has done the job this
- 25:48Speaker 1: year and the other two against Geno Smith. Yeah, I've
- 25:52Speaker 1: done a pretty good job this season. Right, number one
- 25:54Speaker 1: total defense in the NFL, number one scoring defense in
- 25:57Speaker 1: the NFL, and if you ask anybody in that defensive front,
- 25:59Speaker 1: they'll tell you they're probably ranked number one in the NFL, Andrew,
- 26:02Speaker 1: in terms of intimidation factor. That's how they carry them
- 26:05Speaker 1: selves with a violent, really nature and mentality on that
- 26:08Speaker 1: side of the ball. I did the previous match up,
- 26:11Speaker 1: the last one that Thursday night game in Seattle between
- 26:13Speaker 1: these two game teams, and when I talked to players
- 26:15Speaker 1: in the locker room, they told me that they felt
- 26:17Speaker 1: like they affected Gino Smith before the game even started.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Now they've had a lot of success in both the
- 26:22Speaker 1: matchups though against Juno Smith this season is a hundred
- 26:25Speaker 1: two passer rating for the season in the two games
- 26:28Speaker 1: that he played against this forty Niners defense, and multiple
- 26:32Speaker 1: guys had told me they saw early on he was
- 26:34Speaker 1: throwing the football into the ground because of pressure. He
- 26:36Speaker 1: was checking the football down repeatedly because of the pressure.
- 26:39Speaker 1: They do feel like they have Geno Smith's number in
- 26:42Speaker 1: a sense, Andrew, And that's kind of the mentality. They had.
- 26:45Speaker 1: This defense so talented going into this game that they
- 26:48Speaker 1: feel like the third time around, it's going to be
- 26:51Speaker 1: like the first two, Yeah, James, There's no question this
- 26:54Speaker 1: forty Niners defense is looking to intimidate, and with as
- 26:57Speaker 1: much talk as there is about these quarterbacks first time
- 27:00Speaker 1: in the playoffs for Gino Smith and Brock Purtty, this
- 27:03Speaker 1: might come down to the running game forecast for Rain
- 27:06Speaker 1: in Santa Clara just in the last couple of hours
- 27:09Speaker 1: has gone up from to percent. Of course, there's Christian McCaffrey,
- 27:14Speaker 1: who forty nine are undefeated with when they inserted him
- 27:17Speaker 1: into the lineup full time. He's averaging a hundred eighty
- 27:20Speaker 1: three scrimmage yards per game against the Seahawks in his career,
- 27:24Speaker 1: including that one hundred thirty eight yard performance in the
- 27:27Speaker 1: game James referenced a few years ago. Defensively, the forty
- 27:31Speaker 1: Niners are ranked second in stopping the run, their eighth offensively,
- 27:36Speaker 1: and Pete Carroll knows the challenge that they're up against.
- 27:39Speaker 1: He knows it's gonna come down to limiting their mistakes,
- 27:41Speaker 1: limiting turnovers, and Clint Hurt said, schematically, they know that
- 27:45Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan's scheme taxes defenses. That will come down to
- 27:49Speaker 1: discipline and preparation. He said, they'll go back and look
- 27:53Speaker 1: at the plays from earlier this year that some of
- 27:55Speaker 1: the players will be the same that they'll see, but
- 27:57Speaker 1: they won't look the same, not just from this season,
- 27:59Speaker 1: the last four or five years. If the Seahawks defense
- 28:02Speaker 1: can be prepared and answer that bell physically, that should
- 28:05Speaker 1: be the matchup to watch here on Saturday. Had a
- 28:07Speaker 1: veteran defensive player tell me many years ago the preparing
- 28:09Speaker 1: for a Kyle Shanahan offense in the postseason is as
- 28:12Speaker 1: difficult as anything that you have to do. Schregor did
- 28:14Speaker 1: a great job this morning breaking down some Kyle Shanahan's
- 28:17Speaker 1: play calls from postseason's past. That's what the Seahawks have
- 28:22Speaker 1: in front of them. Thank you, Omar, Thank you Jane.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Let's get a p a path fangle on this here.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Mike Renner joins us every week to lead draft analyst
- 28:30Speaker 1: the It's Just Football Podcast. Mike, we talked before, actually
- 28:33Speaker 1: a whole bunch of times here about Hey, can thee
- 28:35Speaker 1: Seahawks actually do this? Mike? They actually did it. Gino
- 28:39Speaker 1: Smith and the Hawks are in the postseason, and it's
- 28:43Speaker 1: crazy to talk about the team that was the second
- 28:46Speaker 1: longest Super Bowl odds heading in to the season, actually
- 28:49Speaker 1: making the postseason, actually getting this opportunity now to go
- 28:51Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl, and obviously Gino Smith's a massive
- 28:54Speaker 1: part of that. I don't think anyone expected this. I
- 28:55Speaker 1: think he's gonna get a long term deal representative of this.
- 28:58Speaker 1: But I gotta give a little love to this rookie class.
- 29:01Speaker 1: John Schneider knocked it out the park once again, probably
- 29:04Speaker 1: the first time he's done in a decade or so.
- 29:05Speaker 1: But my gosh, two starting rookie tackle something I've never
- 29:09Speaker 1: seen in the NFL playing as well as they did.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Charles Cross the twenty third highest grade left tackle, k
- 29:14Speaker 1: Lucas the sixteenth highest grade right tackle, and then they're
- 29:16Speaker 1: blocking for a thousand yard rookie rusher and Kenneth Walker
- 29:19Speaker 1: in the second round. And then, oh, by the way,
- 29:21Speaker 1: a fifth rounder at corner leads the NFL and picks
- 29:24Speaker 1: this year with six ninth highest coverage grade to Rek
- 29:26Speaker 1: will And this rookie class looks like a building block
- 29:28Speaker 1: for something, specially since we expanded the playoffs, though I
- 29:31Speaker 1: should note the seven seeds have yet to win a game. Okay,
- 29:34Speaker 1: that aside, The one seeds that have the weekend off
- 29:38Speaker 1: are the Eagles in the NFC, Mike, the Chiefs in
- 29:40Speaker 1: the a f C as they get arrest. What concerns
- 29:43Speaker 1: you about those teams? Well, for the Chiefs, what concerns
- 29:47Speaker 1: me is that probably the second and third best team
- 29:48Speaker 1: in the NFL right now also play in the a
- 29:50Speaker 1: f C. The Bengals and the Bills are houses, very
- 29:53Speaker 1: complete teams, very elite quarterbacks that they're gonna have to
- 29:55Speaker 1: be going up again. So while that may not be
- 29:58Speaker 1: until obviously the AC Championship game that they could face
- 30:00Speaker 1: either of those two teams, that's gonna be a tough
- 30:02Speaker 1: game whenever it does happen. So that's the worries about
- 30:05Speaker 1: the Chiefs. But the Eagles probably have more actual roster
- 30:08Speaker 1: worries right now there maybe without right tackle Lane Johnson,
- 30:11Speaker 1: he allowed only nine pressures all season long. His backup
- 30:14Speaker 1: Jack Dress going only two games, he's ready allowed six.
- 30:17Speaker 1: That could be an issue for them. I think Jalen
- 30:19Speaker 1: heart shoulders a little more worrisome, and I think it's
- 30:21Speaker 1: being led on right now because obviously he does come
- 30:23Speaker 1: back after only a few weeks. Plays the week A
- 30:25Speaker 1: team was his lowest passing grade of this season. He
- 30:27Speaker 1: had teammates saying they were in awe that he even
- 30:30Speaker 1: could play through the pain in that shoulder, and that's
- 30:33Speaker 1: obviously a throwing shoulder injury is not something you want
- 30:35Speaker 1: to hear coming into the playoffs. That worries me about
- 30:38Speaker 1: the Eagles, all right, And hopefully that shoulder gets a
- 30:40Speaker 1: little bit better with a little time off and some
- 30:42Speaker 1: chance to rest on the couch this weekend watching everyone
- 30:45Speaker 1: else played Mike Renner from Pro Football Focus, Mike as
- 30:48Speaker 1: always appreciated. NFL Now is a production of the NFL
