Transcript
- 0:39None. What's up everybody?
- 0:52How you doing today? It's keep it goes cold meg.com
- 0:55and I am stoked today because today we are reviewing and
- 0:58recapping the back to the beginning Black Sabbath and Ozzy
- 1:02Osbourne farewell extravaganza. I have brought in a cavalcade of
- 1:06guests once again for a roundtable Britney Bunch style,
- 1:10Hollywood Square style review and deep dive as a little
- 1:13smaller group than the last time.
- 1:16But I'm super excited to bring in these guests who are dear
- 1:19friends of mine and peers and allies and comrades in this
- 1:22game. Just first and foremost, there
- 1:25will be spoilers, so if you haven't seen at least clips of
- 1:28it by now, we're going to be talking in depth about the show,
- 1:32our feelings about Black Sabbath and Ozzy and everything under
- 1:36the sun, no pun intended about this event.
- 1:40I'm going to attempt to do the fun.
- 1:44I'm going to bring everybody in one at a time and introduce
- 1:47them. Dooley A, we've got some guests
- 1:50arising arriving here. Thanks so much.
- 1:53Thanks. Jamie.
- 1:53Dillinger Compound is here. Once again, I'm Kefi of Ghost
- 1:56cultman.com. Everybody's links are in the
- 1:59description if you want to follow.
- 2:01And before I forget, there's also a tip menu.
- 2:04If you feel like tipping us, I will put that up.
- 2:06I'm going to kill off the banners for a second and then
- 2:09I'm going to welcome in one guest at a time.
- 2:11And then you'll be at, you know, like, am I in?
- 2:13You are will you will indeed be in.
- 2:15So we're going to do it this way.
- 2:17There's our back to the beginning slide deck there that
- 2:20I created for this. Remember, this was an event for
- 2:22charity. I know people are very cynical
- 2:25and they were constant ads promoting and asking for
- 2:28charity. A portion of all the proceeds
- 2:30merch the live stream, which was apparently seen by over 5
- 2:33billion people, 5 million was all donated to charity.
- 2:37A lots of money was raised for charity.
- 2:39So let's keep the goodwill. You know, I know everybody wants
- 2:42to be cynical and shitty on the Internet.
- 2:44Try to be less shitty. That's my imploration to you
- 2:47all. That's not a word.
- 2:49But here's the guys and here's a little blank screen.
- 2:51So I'm going to bring in one guest at a time.
- 2:53GAIL Worley of the Worley Game. My dear friend, it is wonderful
- 2:57to see you on the screen again. See.
- 2:59You always. Always a pleasure once again.
- 3:04Yeah, I am too. I'm super stoked.
- 3:05This is going to be great. Also, my dear friend and and
- 3:08colleague Ken Pierce of Ken Pierce Media and Piercing Metal.
- 3:12How are you doing, pal? What's going on, Kefi?
- 3:14It's so good to hear and talk about all things Sabbath and
- 3:19Ozzy tonight. Sorry for the noise in the
- 3:23background, Jesus Christ. No, you look pretty.
- 3:27Smart there, I know what. I should take the glasses off
- 3:31because they showed the screen that's there's nothing bad on
- 3:34the screen but it's just annoying to see.
- 3:37Anyway, another dear friend of mine and colleague and Co host
- 3:41Nice glad you're here. Another Co host and colleague of
- 3:44mine on the Glacial Musical podcast and also the host of
- 3:48talking to talk with Don and the blog and book Southeast of
- 3:52Heaven and new album coming soon Don to Lamont.
- 3:55Look. Look at all my beautiful people
- 3:57here. Yay.
- 3:59Hey, hey everybody, Joan Rivers clap.
- 4:01All the superlatives, all the superlatives.
- 4:03I like it. I.
- 4:03Like it? See you can.
- 4:06Yeah, man, it's like a it's like a class reunion.
- 4:11And Speaking of class reunions and class in general, all class
- 4:15all the time. Another good friend of mine, of
- 4:19course, the screen is on cooperating.
- 4:20Hold on one second. I'm trying to welcome you in,
- 4:22Peter, and this thing won't let me.
- 4:27Give me a second. One second.
- 4:30Technology is only good when it's, you know, working.
- 4:35There it is. That's what I needed to do.
- 4:37Peter Wilson of Four trips Ahead and also new solo.
- 4:40Now Peter's here. How are you all?
- 4:44There he is. Hi, you, Pete.
- 4:46How are you? Very good.
- 4:48There was. There was a lot of meddling
- 4:50going on in these last few days. Oh.
- 4:52My God meddling. Right.
- 4:55Medal. So much.
- 4:57Meddling or meddling? Medal.
- 5:00A little bit of both. Well, can it?
- 5:02Would it? Would it be meddling in the
- 5:03metal? Yes, indeed.
- 5:06Not something like that. This is this is correct.
- 5:10Nice word, thanks to everybody who's watching.
- 5:13Apparently Instagram is not working.
- 5:16So the stream Yard continues to have some API problem with
- 5:20Instagram and there's a message that popped up and I have tried
- 5:24to get the IG to go live, but it shan't.
- 5:28And yes, very excited about this.
- 5:31Before I forget and right before I start asking questions, we do
- 5:34appreciate tips here. We do sell some advertising at
- 5:37ghostcoltmag.com, but also we accept tips and I'm going to
- 5:41start doing subscriptions for like an occasional weekly
- 5:44private live stream for our best viewers or whatever.
- 5:47So we have, yeah, give me one second here.
- 5:52Whoops. I'm going to mute you guys until
- 5:55you're just time to talk. But thank you Also.
- 5:58I don't. I do a lot of clackety clacking
- 6:00sometimes, so I'm trying not to. But here's our tip menu.
- 6:04I've put it in the comments should be on Twitch, Facebook
- 6:07and the tube of you. And then, you know, again, we
- 6:12usually plug this a lot harder on our weekly live stream every
- 6:16Thursday afternoon, but I just wanted to kind of drop the tip
- 6:20menu in. Feel free to donate some money.
- 6:22I will split it amongst my friends.
- 6:24That's how I do, just like I do when I host karaoke.
- 6:27So where to begin with this thing?
- 6:30Man, it was very heavy and emotional for me.
- 6:32I watched it all day. I've been rewatching clips of it
- 6:35and other things all weekend until literally right before
- 6:38this stream till 4:21 PM Pacific when I flipped over to turn it
- 6:43off and do our stream together. So I'm going to try to, you
- 6:49know, bring everybody in one person at a time, give them the
- 6:52whole screen to share and talk, including myself at different
- 6:55times. And then we'll just go to round
- 6:58Robin it that way. So I'll start with you, GAIL,
- 7:01I'm going to give you the the conch shell 1st and say just
- 7:05what are you? What were your general
- 7:06impressions about this event and about just in generally?
- 7:10Like, how did you feel about it going in and how do you feel
- 7:13about it now that it's passed? Wow, so much to unpack.
- 7:17OK, well, when I first heard about it, I really didn't grasp
- 7:22the scope of this thing. And when I started watching it
- 7:27and saw the crowd and the expanse of the crowd and I was
- 7:34just like, holy crap, this is huge.
- 7:38And then when Mastodon came on to kick everything off, I was
- 7:43like, OK, who could follow this? This is the best thing ever.
- 7:48I mean, they were, you know, what do they do?
- 7:493 songs. Yes, they only played three
- 7:54songs. That's right.
- 7:55I was like. I would be good just for these
- 7:57three songs rested on who were just fucking killing it.
- 8:00And Braun Daylor, Oh my God, the best drummer imaginable and
- 8:05singing from behind the kit. I was like, all right, this is
- 8:07it, you know, it can only go downhill from here.
- 8:10And boy was I wrong. It was just my mind being blown
- 8:15over and over and over again. So many great legendary bands.
- 8:21I would say in my opinion, every band sounded good.
- 8:24Every band did Black Sabbath proud with their covers of their
- 8:29songs. I appreciated how they kept to
- 8:32kept mostly to the original arrangements and except for a
- 8:37few vocalists who maybe weren't quite up to where they were in
- 8:40their heyday, I thought every any anybody who watched it got
- 8:45the bang for the buck. Definitely.
- 8:46And Black Sabbath must have been so honored.
- 8:50I'm actually surprised they weren't weeping with all the
- 8:53love they were shown. And Ozzy sounded great and the
- 8:56band sounded amazing. It was just, it was, I think,
- 8:59the best concert of the past decade.
- 9:03Yeah, I think Ozzy cried a little bit and maybe Bill too at
- 9:06one point. Hang on to some more thoughts
- 9:08'cause I'm going to come back to you in a second and I'm going to
- 9:10bring in, I'm going to bring in my buddy Ken and make Ken on the
- 9:15full screen and unmute Ken here we look at that.
- 9:17I can control shit. I don't know you.
- 9:19There we go. Can you hear you?
- 9:21Can we hear you, Ken? Give us your thoughts, Ken.
- 9:26There you go. Give us your thoughts on the
- 9:28event. Were you cynical?
- 9:30That, you know, this, this, this keeps dropping.
- 9:33OK, No, you know, it's interesting.
- 9:35So, so when they, like GAIL said when they announced this, I
- 9:39wasn't sure what to make of it. Ozzy has been in such poor
- 9:43health over the last few years. There was a big question.
- 9:47I know everybody was thinking it will he actually make this in
- 9:51terms of being able to, you know, get up there and and
- 9:54perform so, but on him in a minute.
- 9:58I did not see the entire stream. I was not around most of the
- 10:01day. And so I didn't order it because
- 10:04I knew you only could have it for another 48 hours.
- 10:06And I said, you know what? It's I'm, I'm not going to be
- 10:09around much. I'm going to be around for the
- 10:11key points. And I was able to visit a a
- 10:14friend who had The Who had it on and I watched the key moments.
- 10:18I did. So I saw Metallica, who are
- 10:21flawless, really. I thought Guns and Roses were
- 10:25musically tight. I thought Sabbath is a little
- 10:27out of Axel's vocal register and that's all I'll say on him.
- 10:31I did see Hailstorm. I loved what they were doing.
- 10:34And of course then Ozzy came out when he rose up on that throne.
- 10:39That was a lot of fun and he looked so happy to be there.
- 10:44And his voice was was really strong.
- 10:46And when you hear him doing this stuff in this age and under all
- 10:50these issues, you see just how good a voice Ozzy had.
- 10:55That it was so hard to sing this stuff by all of these other
- 10:58sordid singers that Ozzy is just not a voice you can emulate like
- 11:02that. And of course, seeing Billboard
- 11:06back there with with the drums and Sabbath was was delightful.
- 11:11And he's just, he still got some power to him and his punch.
- 11:15And like GAIL said, I agree. I think Sabbath was moved to the
- 11:19point of, you know, emotional. So.
- 11:23But yeah, I, I enjoyed what I got to see.
- 11:25I'm glad I got to watch some of it.
- 11:29That's it. I literally just lost everybody.
- 12:06Don, I hear you. You can talk.
- 12:08Go. Ahead.
- 12:08OK, there you are. There you are.
- 12:10We're a little technical difficulty there.
- 12:11So, OK, the only way I can describe this is I felt like the
- 12:17Grinch. But like, before and after, like
- 12:20before it started, I was like, they should never have let Ozzy
- 12:24go this long. He's, you know, you know, I
- 12:27mean, I'm sensitive. Ozzy was my boy.
- 12:30Ozzy was my, my, you know, one of my biggest saviors as a kid.
- 12:35And I didn't want to see him the way I was going to see him on
- 12:39this. But I'll be damned if by the end
- 12:41of that show I was in tears. It was, it was moving.
- 12:47I still think it was a little too much, too little too late
- 12:51somewhat. But if they were going to do it,
- 12:53like the emotion was there. And I I mean, I thought
- 12:58everybody did. Everybody had their good points.
- 13:02But I honestly have to say, between Hailstorm and Rival Sons
- 13:06and oh shit, it's already skipping me.
- 13:12But anyway, those two are the ones that stood out to me the
- 13:14most as far as like the smaller bands.
- 13:17I thought Rival Sons was fucking just incredible.
- 13:20And Hailstorm, I don't even know much about him, but I want to
- 13:24know. But it was beautiful to see the
- 13:26crowd so happy, see him so emotional.
- 13:28And I think that that kind of added to the overall feeling of
- 13:32it all. Yeah, like I said, I'm I'm still
- 13:36trying. I'm still trying to process it
- 13:39like and then probably a lot of us are.
- 13:41And then Don's heart grew 2 sizes in his Taylor Swift shirt.
- 13:45It did. God damn it.
- 13:47I don't like feeling good. I.
- 13:49Don't get your feelings, God damn it.
- 13:52And and on that humorous note, let's bring in our good friend
- 13:56Peter Wilson. Great to see you again, my
- 13:57friend. How are you today?
- 13:58Great to be here with these lovely metallologists.
- 14:03So I, I am totally, I have to say, like I'm still, I'm, I'm
- 14:08still moved by it. It was very, I, I was actually
- 14:12really excited about the show. I wasn't so negative about it.
- 14:16I thought it was going to be something really great.
- 14:19I think it was emotionally super important for the metal
- 14:22community. Of course, there's a whole
- 14:25commercial and then we'll probably get into as we go.
- 14:28But I think emotionally it was really beautiful because you
- 14:32just saw how important Sabbath was and is to so many people.
- 14:37So that was really wonderful seeing a lot of my heroes
- 14:40growing up, then paying all my homage to the great Sabbath and
- 14:46you know, Ozzy era Sabbath obviously at the forefront.
- 14:49But it was really terrific to see that.
- 14:53I'm kind of I'm trying to figure out a way for me to be
- 14:57diplomatic. I have a lot of feelings about
- 15:01the artists and who was great and who I could have I expected
- 15:06a lot more from. But I think I know we're going
- 15:08to get into that. But I do think that there were
- 15:11certain moments. I mean, just seeing the, the
- 15:14whole Ozzy doing my mom coming home was, was really rough.
- 15:18It was just beautiful to see it. And I, I felt really totally
- 15:22moved and hit hard and not expecting that, but it was
- 15:25really terrific. And I loved, I loved all that.
- 15:27I love the celebration of those 4 gentlemen.
- 15:30They're still here. I'm still recovering over the
- 15:33final kiss shows from years ago. So then to see Sabbath and then
- 15:37obviously we're starting to think about other heroes are
- 15:40going to go down that route. So I'm, you know, I'm loving to
- 15:43see that people while they're still alive, they're being
- 15:46celebrated. I think that that's super
- 15:48important. We need to do more of that when
- 15:50people are a little more in their heyday because, you know,
- 15:54we're here only once. So it was great to kind of to
- 15:57kind of experience all that. But I definitely feel that there
- 16:00were some people that totally rose to the occasion and they
- 16:03got the queen memo from Live Aid, right?
- 16:07The Queen Live Aid memo, you do your hits, you kick butt and
- 16:12you're out of there. And then there's some people,
- 16:15despite the history of that performance, that didn't get the
- 16:18memo. And I think we'll talk about
- 16:21that as we go. I have very strong opinions.
- 16:23I watched the whole thing and rewatched a lot of parts,
- 16:27sometimes in the horror and disbelief and in other times
- 16:30just really celebrating. So, you know, I don't want to
- 16:33talk any further because I know that we're going to get into our
- 16:35faves and what was not our faves in a bit.
- 16:39But yeah, I'm, I'm excited. I think it's also really cool.
- 16:42And I don't know how everyone else is feeling, but the
- 16:44excitement on social media is really great.
- 16:48And it's like it's vindicating as a lifelong metal head, right?
- 16:51For people that didn't even like any of the kind of stuff that we
- 16:55all loved and, you know, and basically grew up on kind of
- 16:59giving it up and saying, wow, I didn't realize how important
- 17:02metal still is. And we're all like, duh, of
- 17:06course. But it's really wonderful to see
- 17:08even like bigger commercial press having to cover it and
- 17:12really doing a good job with it. So, you know, kudos to to Ozzy
- 17:16and Sabbath and and to some degree, whether I want to admit
- 17:19or not, Sharon Osbourne, right, because she kind of was the
- 17:22centerpiece of pull all this together.
- 17:24And we can talk about, you know that, but it was really
- 17:28terrific. Right on, Peter.
- 17:31I'll put myself up for a second and say, hey, we did get the
- 17:35news today that Sharon is retiring from the music
- 17:37business, probably to just care for Ozzy and work on their other
- 17:40business things. And I have a bonus question.
- 17:43I did not pose in the e-mail that I'm going to pose at the
- 17:45end, which will be super exciting because it's a thing
- 17:48that Don and I get into a lot with Nick Cameron on the
- 17:50Glacially Musical podcast. But yeah, it was very heavy to
- 17:54watch. And it was very like, we've
- 17:56never seen something like this. Metal does not get a lot of
- 18:01public flowers. I, I talk a lot of times about
- 18:03this experience I had. I, I graduated LaGuardia High
- 18:06School in New York City a year after Peter and I came, I went
- 18:09to Bronx Community College. And like in 1991, I came home
- 18:13from school at like 4:00 in the afternoon and I put on MTV when
- 18:17I finally had cable and it was like, and you know, it was like
- 18:20Metallica one. It was like living color cult of
- 18:25personality and even like Anthrax in my world on in the
- 18:30middle afternoon. And this is before the black
- 18:32album dropped. And I was like, what is
- 18:33happening? Why is this happening at four
- 18:365:00 in the afternoon on before TRL, before the the pop takeover
- 18:42from the Disney kids Like this is insane.
- 18:44And and it's really wild to see the whole cultural zeitgeist be
- 18:49taken over by metal for a few days.
- 18:51Like everybody's post, every single thing trending on every
- 18:54social network, even not metal heads talking about it.
- 18:57It was on the news on a television show.
- 19:00Like, you know, like the whole world is captivated by this for
- 19:03a whole weekend and a whole minute.
- 19:05And it feels really nice. But let's, you know, like I one
- 19:08thing I do want to circle back to the team about and talk about
- 19:11is the technical aspect of pulling off something like this.
- 19:14Now I'm going to give my feelings.
- 19:16I don't have facts on this, but my feeling is there was probably
- 19:201 backline crew and because of the logistics of everything, I'm
- 19:25guessing most of the bands, even the preeminent bands were not
- 19:28allowed to have their tech people.
- 19:30So I think that's why Metallica, a little bit of technical
- 19:34difficulties, Guns N' Roses technical difficulties.
- 19:36Jakey Lee handed an out of tune guitar.
- 19:39What a shame. So I understand how hard it is.
- 19:43I did love the rotating stage. Now I've seen this done in
- 19:45person at Sick New World 2023 where they have a stage with a
- 19:49back line and a drunk kit, and then they rotated 360 for a
- 19:52whole next band perfectly ready with almost little in between
- 19:56checking just a few tweaks, right?
- 19:58And I thought that was really, well, GAIL, from what you saw.
- 20:02Technically, how did you feel about did they pull off the
- 20:05concert? There were problems with the
- 20:07live stream in the moment. I will say there were occasional
- 20:09dropouts. People complained rampantly that
- 20:12Alice In Chains's performance was not able to be heard for
- 20:15more than half of their performance.
- 20:16And then the sound kind of kicked in.
- 20:18And we did have a lot of freezing and stuff, but in terms
- 20:20of pulling off a huge festival type thing with just these huge
- 20:24Echelon bands all in a row, one after the other after the other
- 20:28with, you know, not the their own comfort zone.
- 20:31How did you feel they all handled it and it?
- 20:33Was I thought it was flawless. I thought it was magical.
- 20:37As a matter of fact, the the fact that those logistics were
- 20:41pulled off so seamlessly or what appeared seamlessly to me was
- 20:47like next level execution on a live event, definitely.
- 20:51And everybody was having a great time.
- 20:55I mean, when you saw those different super groups that had
- 20:58been put together, musicians that have never played together
- 21:01before, they were having the time of their lives and
- 21:05everybody was playing as good as they've ever played.
- 21:09I couldn't. I mean, seeing Nuno Betancourt
- 21:12again after, you know, not hearing about him for 20 years,
- 21:16although I'm sure he has obviously been busy, I was like,
- 21:19Oh my God, he's phenomenal. You know, I, I, I just can't
- 21:25believe they pulled it off. And I've also seen the rotating
- 21:28stage setups at some of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame type of
- 21:33concerts I've been to. This seemed even better than
- 21:37that. Like, except for, like you said,
- 21:40for a couple of dropouts on the live stream, which has nothing
- 21:43to do with what's going on on stage necessarily.
- 21:50I don't, I just can't believe it happened.
- 21:52I, you know, I probably used this word before.
- 21:54It was really like magic, like everybody coming together
- 21:57because this was a once in a lifetime event.
- 22:02I couldn't believe how good everybody sounded.
- 22:04I couldn't believe how good Black Sabbath sounded because
- 22:08you, I mean, I'm a cynical person.
- 22:11I always expect people to sound bad when they've been around so
- 22:16long and haven't necessarily been playing.
- 22:19But look at The Rolling Stones. They sound amazing.
- 22:22Black Sabbath sounded better than The Rolling Stones have
- 22:25ever sounded. We got a Rolling Stone at this
- 22:28thing, which is also. Yeah, Ronnie, that was
- 22:30fantastic. Ronnie, would I have to give a
- 22:32little credit to my girlfriend because we were both had the
- 22:34same brain Thought for a minute we were like, what if Paul
- 22:38McCartney shows up and does live in Lake Nye and then does a
- 22:41Black Sabbath song Because Ozzy's such a Beatles freak,
- 22:43right? Ringo and and Paul are still
- 22:46alive, but maybe we were shooting the moon too much.
- 22:47But shout out to my girl for coming up with that.
- 22:50The only person I noticed that wasn't really traditionally
- 22:53metal or Hard Rock was Billy Corgan.
- 22:56And he's also not really a a terrific singer.
- 22:59But he did a good job with the song he did.
- 23:02And of course he's a good performer.
- 23:04I was. Not sure he did a good job to.
- 23:07Be honest with you, but we'll get there.
- 23:08But he did. I thought there were others who,
- 23:11you know, if we're going to say who wasn't maybe the best, he
- 23:14wasn't the worst, definitely. Yeah, OK.
- 23:16You know, that's OK. I think he did a good job on
- 23:18breaking the law, not the. Rest yes, exactly all.
- 23:22Right, we'll, we'll come back to you, GAIL in a second.
- 23:25Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off.
- 23:27Go on. The logistics were amazing and
- 23:29too confused. Definitely.
- 23:32Right on, Ken, for you, how hard is it to pull off?
- 23:35Like how do you think these bands pulled this shit off?
- 23:37Like drummers, especially you're, you're a drummer
- 23:41particular about your kit and like everything.
- 23:44Nobody seemed like they were fussing with their setup.
- 23:47Everybody just rocked, at least from what I can tell.
- 23:50It didn't seem like, oh, I've got to put this here and this
- 23:51there because I don't think a lot of these bands had their
- 23:54crews. They didn't.
- 23:56There was like 1 crew for the whole event and I think that's
- 23:59challenging. But did you feel like from the
- 24:01bit that you saw that it was seamlessly done?
- 24:03Did you think it was in cups? Tell me what you think.
- 24:06Yeah, so as far as the drummers go, I I really think that every
- 24:10drummer who was getting ready to play had their hand in getting
- 24:14the kit to be exactly how they needed because every single
- 24:18drummer that rolled out. Looked.
- 24:20Absolutely comfortable in the setup that they have.
- 24:23And I've, I've sat on other people's kits before and I've
- 24:26fussed around and I've fallen off the chair because of it's
- 24:29too high or it's too low or this is too far away and that's too
- 24:33close. So it's a real, real pain in the
- 24:36butt to get a drum kit the right way when it's your drum kit and
- 24:40someone else is in front of you and you, you have like 10
- 24:43minutes to set it up. So I really think Bastaf worked
- 24:46on his and I think the the drummer for guns, I don't know
- 24:50his name, the new guy, he worked on his and, and everybody else,
- 24:54you know, especially the Gojira drummer.
- 24:56Come on, look at look at, look at him.
- 24:58He looked like he was up there all day.
- 25:01So but it's a lot of effort to get that kind of stuff up.
- 25:04And I think they were flawless in in doing that.
- 25:07And of course, Speaking of drummers, you know, I was always
- 25:10a marginal casual fan of Black Sabbath as as a younger guy that
- 25:15I didn't get into them until late, but I did love what Bill
- 25:20Ward brought to the table. So my heart was like skipping a
- 25:22beat when that when that stage was turning that one final time
- 25:26and you knew it was him going to be up there on the drums getting
- 25:29ready to play War Pigs. So it was it was really cool.
- 25:33So again, you know, I thought everybody was really flawless.
- 25:38I especially enjoyed Papa singing Bark at the Moon.
- 25:42And I saw somebody said, oh, he sucks.
- 25:44I'm like, yeah, he really sucks. Yeah, sure.
- 25:47OK, so, but yeah. Don't read the Internet
- 25:52comments. That's what I've learned from
- 25:54this whole experience. It's it's kind of, oh, I did not
- 25:57hear Slayer. I I saw Slayer.
- 25:59I didn't hear Slayer. Yeah, people.
- 26:02Maybe it was the feed I was watching, I don't know.
- 26:07So yeah, that's all I got on that one.
- 26:10No worries. Thanks so much, Ken.
- 26:12We'll be coming back to you in a few minutes.
- 26:13Don Dilemon, tell me technically as a guitar player, a person
- 26:19that also makes music in your room behind you, when I see a
- 26:21bass in there and everything on your keyboard, what's it like?
- 26:25Like, think about like an Adam Wakeman, who is the only
- 26:27keyboard player beside the Mastodon guy the whole day.
- 26:31Like to come in there and be versatile and have your gear
- 26:34just so. And no one seemed uncomfortable.
- 26:37Did you share that assessment? Did you think anybody was out of
- 26:40their comfort zone so much that they couldn't overcome it?
- 26:43Like maybe the Super groups? How did you feel about all that?
- 26:47Well, so honestly, I, I felt like the comfort level of all
- 26:51these people was like surprising, but I mean
- 26:54surprising to me because, you know, I mean, I haven't played,
- 26:59I haven't played the number of shows nearly this, most of these
- 27:02people play. But the times I've ever had to
- 27:03play on a back line, like literally I had to take a Xanax
- 27:07'cause I was like, this is too much.
- 27:09I can't handle this. Like, these guys walked right
- 27:11out on stage and just plugged in, plugged and played.
- 27:15But the thing I did notice through all the bands was that
- 27:19they were a lot of times where certain members of the band just
- 27:22all the sudden like they'd be, they would just look lost, deer
- 27:25in the headlights. And they were looking to the
- 27:26stage, which meant, I mean, at least I assumed that they were
- 27:29having issues with their in ears.
- 27:31And I also know that being a, you know, I'm not a drummer, but
- 27:35I do know that it's crucial for the drummer to be able to hear
- 27:38what's going on. I saw it a few times early on.
- 27:41I saw it with Bill at one point and the Sabbath said you got, I
- 27:46saw him just look over. He's pointing his stick kind of
- 27:48like I can't, you know what I mean?
- 27:50Like trying to get someone's attention.
- 27:52Other than that, I mean, that's the kind of stuff you would
- 27:54expect it to happen when you've got to show this fucking huge.
- 27:59You know, I, I was very impressed with the timing.
- 28:03I mean, I think they clocked it. I think they said it was a 7
- 28:06minute changeover, like 7 minute, you know, you know,
- 28:10turnover between bands, which is unbelievable.
- 28:13So it was very mechanical, like they had it down, but it also
- 28:18didn't seem to be like to lose the flow or anything.
- 28:21If anything, I felt like I got people excited because they
- 28:24barely had time to breathe before the next band came on.
- 28:26So as far as the stream goes, I put that right up there with
- 28:31shit like Ticketmaster and stuff like that where you're like,
- 28:34after all these years, you'd think that they would know how
- 28:36to handle like extreme amounts of traffic and things like that.
- 28:40But you know, you can't always rely on that.
- 28:44So again, for something of this caliber, I thought they did
- 28:48good. I did have an issue with Alice
- 28:50in Chainset though. Same.
- 28:52I got maybe, I think it was like 3/4 of the way through wood and
- 28:58it was just like, no, no volume, no sound at all.
- 29:02So I had to go find an audience film version to hear the things
- 29:07that we're cutting out. But yeah, aside from that, like
- 29:11I think those are the kind of things that are expected, but I
- 29:13thought it was a pretty smooth run show logistically.
- 29:21Right, duly noted on that, Don and I will come back to you
- 29:24soon. And then on the same note, Oh my
- 29:29bad Peter. Oh me tricky figure itchy Peter,
- 29:34what do you think about just the logistics of doing this massive
- 29:37thing you've performed in bands as a solo artist now more
- 29:41recently again, like I just think about guitar players are
- 29:45such fucking Divas. Nuno Betancourt is, you know,
- 29:50tours with Rihanna extreme. By the way, GAIL has been on
- 29:52tour for the last couple years doing what has been a farewell
- 29:56tour, right? And or maybe not a farewell
- 29:59tour, but like we we have enough time to do 1.
- 30:02We're going to fit one in in between Nuno's schedule.
- 30:04So who knows if this is it for them.
- 30:07But just thought, you know, Jakey Lee getting an attitude
- 30:09guitar. Jake, where's Jake?
- 30:11That was great. Actually very Spinal Tap.
- 30:14But Peter, you've you've seen these kind of things before.
- 30:16What do you think? What do you think?
- 30:19How do you think they pulled this off And and what would be
- 30:21concerning or not concerning to you if you were there?
- 30:24So the first thing I want to say and echo kind of what everyone's
- 30:27saying, I mean the stage was incredible.
- 30:29I was spending a lot of time trying to watch.
- 30:31I love that they had the overhead shots so you could see
- 30:34the changeover. That was great.
- 30:35I played on big bills and festival shows and toured with,
- 30:39you know, 4 trips ahead and you know, we've had all sorts of
- 30:42incredible situations and terrible situations.
- 30:45Sometimes you have great situations where you think you
- 30:48also sound like a God and then what's coming out out there is
- 30:52not so happening and vice versa where everything on stage sounds
- 30:55like crap, but everyone's hearing and saying why you sound
- 30:58great. So this kind of, you know, with
- 31:00the feeds going on, the streaming with video cameras
- 31:04everywhere, with the stage revolving.
- 31:07I mean, I, I know that Tom Morello had a lot to do with
- 31:10curating and musicians, which I think he did a pretty good job
- 31:15of, you know, I could be nitpicky here and there, but I,
- 31:19I think that it was a great, I think for the massive amount of
- 31:23people and the massive amount of egos that were present were so
- 31:28much could go wrong. I think that they did a really
- 31:31great job. It seemed like everyone was in
- 31:34the space of this is a once in a lifetime thing.
- 31:37Ozzy is dealing with a whole bunch of health issues.
- 31:40We don't know how much more we're going to have him around
- 31:43us. Let's make this like a beautiful
- 31:45send off. So I think that that changes the
- 31:47vibe. You know, I mean, I've after
- 31:49touring for as much as I have and playing live shows and all
- 31:52the above, you have to go into the situations going, OK, hey,
- 31:56I'm going to do my best. Whatever's going to happen is
- 31:58going to happen. And I think that people that
- 32:01that attitude was really cool, like, you know, to the point of
- 32:05Jake Lee getting the attitude guitar and hearing it right away
- 32:09and then kind of going, you know, kind of making a bit of a
- 32:11face and, you know, doing his thing and then just going, OK,
- 32:14well, I'm here. Let's let's let's rock it.
- 32:18I thought, you know, what's that was kind of the whole vibe in
- 32:21general. Like a lot of people are just
- 32:23like, hey, let's just let's have a good time, let's throw it,
- 32:26let's do it. And I thought it was really well
- 32:28done. I should think that the crew was
- 32:30incredible and the and you know, and all of just seeing how hard
- 32:36they were working constantly and they must have been doing that.
- 32:39And from what I've seen in the back backstage stuff I've seen
- 32:42and, and the days ahead and when they were like leading up, all
- 32:46the logistics were pretty incredible, you know, and I
- 32:49follow a ton of the people that were on that were actually
- 32:51performing. I know some of the people that
- 32:53were performing and they were saying that the vibe was pretty
- 32:57incredible. So and you felt it and that was
- 33:00really great. And I think that that is so
- 33:02important because that creates the community that everyone was
- 33:05talking about, you know, that we're all part of this, this
- 33:07like loving male community and everyone was just kind of into
- 33:10it. And I, I think that that was
- 33:12really important. It's important for the music to
- 33:15go on, not just for like old performers, a lot of the
- 33:18younger, you know, groups that are, or the more recent groups
- 33:21that have been out. I think that's to show that
- 33:23solidarity and to make sure that everyone's sound was paid
- 33:27attention to as much as everyone elses.
- 33:30I mean, I was super stoked to see my band, my favorite band,
- 33:34Rival Sons kill on the day. Performance wise, sonically,
- 33:40they sounded. I mean, they sound better than a
- 33:42lot of the headliners and it had a lot to do, I think, with the
- 33:45energy and probably a lot to do with also the setup, right?
- 33:49How direct are you when you have a band like Rival Sons, which is
- 33:52very organic, very early Sabbathy actually, right.
- 33:56And we were talking, I think GAIL was mentioning how great
- 33:58Sabbath sounded. You know, some of it is like
- 34:00because it's not that complicated.
- 34:02You have great players and they're just 4 entities kind of,
- 34:07you know, filling their tone up. Whereas with with some other
- 34:10groups that have a lot more going on and maybe have some
- 34:13flying in stuff. We'll talk about vocals and
- 34:15stuff because there was a lot happening there as a singer I
- 34:19can talk about just plaintively. And then there was some group,
- 34:23some people had a harder time with it.
- 34:25So, but I think in terms of the crew and the production, they
- 34:29did an incredible job. And and I think they should be.
- 34:32I mean, I hope that all those cats that I don't know what kind
- 34:35of crew it is or who was leading it, but I think I hope those
- 34:38guys are all working on the highest level and getting paid
- 34:41and got paid right, because they were really tremendous and
- 34:44helped make this, this event really successful.
- 34:47But I mean, to me, this was a great example of how future
- 34:51festivals should go with the revolving stage.
- 34:53You pay a little more because I mean, there's, it's a lot of a
- 34:56lot of years going on with this where you have the revolving
- 34:59stages. I've only played in a revolving
- 35:01stage once and it was amazing to be a part of and great.
- 35:04And I did like a 30 minute set, but it's very, it's, there's a
- 35:08lot of moving parts going on. So kudos to them making it
- 35:12happen. It cost a lot of money to do and
- 35:14to do right. But the audience experience and
- 35:18terms of festivals and the left, the very minimal lag time in
- 35:23between sets, I think made it really cool.
- 35:26You know how everyone else felt. But it was, it was really neat.
- 35:28I was just blown away by the turnovers.
- 35:30Even the commercials were short and I thought it was killer.
- 35:34I think people's patience for anything in between is probably
- 35:39minimal. Peter, I'm actually going to
- 35:40keep it with you for another couple of minutes.
- 35:42Just give me your highlights of both Sabbath and Ozzy and just
- 35:47any other unique observations you had.
- 35:50I'm sure we're all gonna have. Some feelings about this of the
- 35:53of specific. Ozzy set and band and Sabbath
- 35:58set just give me we're gonna just knock this out on a high
- 36:01and then we can talk about negative shit in the next go
- 36:04round. I like that.
- 36:06Let's let's say so. So I definitely felt that.
- 36:11I felt that the Aussie set was great and very emotional, not
- 36:15like any major surprises in terms of songs and, you know,
- 36:19doing maybe Mr. Crowley was kind of like, oh, cool, you know?
- 36:22But even that is part of such an iconic record.
- 36:25You know, we all know the material.
- 36:28It's weird. I knew that they were going to
- 36:29do Mama I'm Coming Home. But obviously emotionally, it
- 36:32was just like, Oh my goodness, the band was killer.
- 36:37I love that that Mike Inez played bass for this Hallelujah.
- 36:42I have a thing about Mike Inez and Zack Wylde.
- 36:44I think that they were like that.
- 36:47No more tears, man, you know, ripped Randy Castillo, but that
- 36:50band was just out of control. Good.
- 36:52They had like a a whole thing other than the very early Ozzy
- 36:56stuff. To me, they crystallized
- 36:58something. I mean, the, the fan of me would
- 37:00have loved, especially with Jimmy Swagger dying, I would
- 37:03have loved, loved, loved Miracle Man or something like that
- 37:08because I, I think it would have been just so fantastic.
- 37:11That's my little inner child thing.
- 37:14I would have loved something like that, you know, but
- 37:18realistically with what's going on, as I said before, they got
- 37:22the queen memo, play the hits, play the things that are going
- 37:25to really move people. I thought it was great.
- 37:28I do want to say, and I have to say this to everybody, and you
- 37:31and and Kefi knows how much I love Ozzy and how important he
- 37:35is to me as an entity, as a singer, as a comeback kid and
- 37:40all the above. I always root for Ozzy.
- 37:42That being said, guys, Ozzy wasn't singing most of that.
- 37:46A lot of it was him kind of like he was singing, but there was a
- 37:50lot of help going on there. A lot of help.
- 37:54And you know what? I'll just be on and I'm a singer
- 37:57and I, I want real singing going on.
- 37:59But honestly, I didn't care. I kind of knew and I didn't care
- 38:03because I was just so proud of Ozzy being up there.
- 38:07Whatever Sharon has to do to make sure that her husband, the
- 38:10love of her life and this iconic, like once in a lifetime
- 38:14metal character is kind of crystallized in the memory of
- 38:18literally millions and millions of people in that way.
- 38:21She had to go do what she had to do.
- 38:23But I mean, it was very clear that he wasn't like, singing.
- 38:26He hasn't. But to be fair also, if any of
- 38:28you are like, you know, Ozzy and Sabbath fans, he hasn't sung 5
- 38:32by himself since the late 80s. Really.
- 38:36Let's talk about it. You know, no more tears for he
- 38:39was using a background singer. And in the mid 90s, Robert Mason
- 38:43was singing, you know, background behind the stage for
- 38:46three years. It's just a reality.
- 38:49And that's OK with modern technology.
- 38:51I'm kind of like, I'm not mad at it because I don't know what
- 38:54kind of pain he's going through. I can't imagine physically what
- 38:58what his body is going through. Is he yelling and talking in
- 39:01between? Absolutely.
- 39:03Are there 3 to 4 to maybe 6 voices kind of in between his
- 39:07vocal? Absolutely.
- 39:08And it doesn't matter because we love Ozzy and it's OK and we're
- 39:12all singing along anyway. So that didn't matter.
- 39:14And I I just tabled that because I think Ozzy is an elder
- 39:18statesman and I think it's fine. And the same went went true with
- 39:23Sabbath. I think Sabbath was great.
- 39:25Of course, there was the inter me that would have loved to have
- 39:28heard like super not or something like that.
- 39:31Or, you know, Sabbath bloody Sabbath, which is arguing my
- 39:34favorite Sabbath song of the original Ozzy lineup.
- 39:38You know, I love that. Like, you know, I mean, we'll
- 39:40talk about later, but I love some of the surprises we heard
- 39:42earlier in the day. But of course Sabbath is going
- 39:45to play the set and they have to play certain songs.
- 39:48And, and starting with War Pigs is really hard, especially in
- 39:51open air late night. It was the only song I I saw
- 39:55that Bill Ward had a little problem with.
- 39:57And I think it was hearing and timing.
- 40:01Because towards the middle out, he kind of found his groove and
- 40:04it stayed throughout, which was really cool.
- 40:07And that was that was great. I do want to say, if I didn't
- 40:11get, if I don't get to say this Geezer Butler is God.
- 40:15If anyone has any doubts of how incredible Geezer Butler is and
- 40:20how important he was to the Sabbath franchise, to Sabbath,
- 40:25to metal music, watch him in throughout the performance.
- 40:29He was incredible. Just settling back, watching
- 40:34Bill Ward kind of finding the pocket in the groove, him and
- 40:38looking at Iomi all the time, who I also thought was fabulous.
- 40:42But I think Geezer Butler was just so incredible.
- 40:45Always makes like playing the intricate parts he plays looks
- 40:49so easy and so like, hey, no problem, you know, like he could
- 40:53be drinking a beer. He could be like lying on a
- 40:55beach somewhere. He could be playing these crazy
- 40:57Sabbath licks and he'd have the same relaxed expression.
- 41:00And I just love it. I love his his whole vibe, his
- 41:04energy. I felt like that like he's the
- 41:06linchpin and the Sabbath story and it's shown that night and I
- 41:09was just so like I kept in my head.
- 41:11I kept yelling, geezer, you're just the best.
- 41:14So that was really wonderful for me to see that.
- 41:17And I think I think Gayle had mentioned before how great they
- 41:19sounded. I think that like somewhere in
- 41:22the middle of War Pigs, like all the stars aligned and sonically
- 41:26it was really great. And that to me lasted
- 41:28throughout. And again, like I said, Ozzy's
- 41:31vocal was, you know, was fake vocals, whatever extra vocals,
- 41:36lots of help, who cares? It was it was Sabbath, it was
- 41:40great, it was fun. They're amazing.
- 41:42And and like it was a really great performance.
- 41:45And like I said, energy wise, I felt it was it was really
- 41:48fabulous. So kudos to them.
- 41:51You know, I'm a big geezer fan. That's how I roll, Don.
- 41:55Let's bring it back to my boy Donnie de Lavont.
- 41:59What do you think? Observation.
- 42:00Sabbath, Ozzy sets anything stand out to you?
- 42:03Anything disappoint you? So.
- 42:07Those two sets. Well, so to kind of go off with
- 42:11Pete was just saying was that. So I watched both.
- 42:15I watched the stream and then I also watched some of the fan
- 42:19film videos because I tend to enjoy both and sometimes the fan
- 42:24videos, if the audio is good, you're getting a more realistic
- 42:27representation of where you're getting and Ozzy definitely did
- 42:30not sound the way he sounded in the stream on the live
- 42:35recordings. But again, I think it was Peter
- 42:38said this is that Ozzy hasn't sounded like Ozzy since 94 and
- 42:43even then he was starting to struggle.
- 42:44So, but that aside, I, I just, I got hung up in the emotion of it
- 42:51and I, I fucking hate that because I always grill, grill
- 42:56people for that. Like you don't get hung up in
- 42:58the emotion. Listen to the quality, listen to
- 43:00the vocals. If they're not good, it doesn't
- 43:02matter. You're like, you know, it does
- 43:05matter. Because as grandma, as I hate to
- 43:07put this, it's kind of like, you know, if the last time you see a
- 43:13family member like they're all good and you're happy and you're
- 43:16seeing them and then they die and then that was your last
- 43:20memory of them. You're like, I'm OK.
- 43:22But there's a part of you that kind of wishes that you could
- 43:25have been there at the end, you know, to just kind of see them
- 43:30off. And that's what kind of hit me
- 43:33with this and my Grinch heart, like I was angry at myself for
- 43:38feeling. And so it was it, it was really
- 43:43good. It was very cool.
- 43:44I thought Ozzy looked frail, but you could just see he still had
- 43:50that fight in him, you know, and he was loving it.
- 43:53He loved being being there. I thought they sound.
- 43:56I thought he sounded strong. I thought I thought the song
- 44:00selection was great. My mom coming home just had me
- 44:04bawling. And but I do have to say I don't
- 44:08like his drummer. I never liked Cleftus.
- 44:10I don't, I mean, maybe it's just because I'm so used to hearing,
- 44:15you know, drummers like Borden and like, you know, or even, you
- 44:18know, Bill Ward, who undeniably they have swing, they have some
- 44:22they have some air between their movements and everything.
- 44:26I always just thought cleft is just kind of felt just like a
- 44:28hard hitting drummer. So that's always been kind of a
- 44:33thorn in my side. Now, As for Sabbath, hats off to
- 44:37Bill Ward because it was a little rough there starting out,
- 44:42but God damn. I mean, you got to think about
- 44:45how old these guys are, right? And the smiles on their faces
- 44:49and the way they were looking at each other for a split second, I
- 44:51kind of got a glimpse of what they probably were like in their
- 44:55early 20s practicing in a, you know, in Naomi's mom's flower
- 45:00shop. You know, like the roughness was
- 45:03there. The kind of, at times the kind
- 45:05of sloppiness kind of came through, but it was so organic.
- 45:10And I don't care what anybody says, but God damn, Bill Ward is
- 45:12a fucking monster. Like that dude still hits as
- 45:16hard as any drummer I've ever seen, but he does it with this
- 45:20finesse in this swing. And I again, like the freak side
- 45:25of me, but I've loved to have heard, you know, behind the Wall
- 45:28of sleep or whatever. But when I'm looking at this
- 45:31list, these were songs that were relatively easy, especially easy
- 45:35on Ozzy. So I thought it was also a great
- 45:38representation of the songs that made them the kind of fans band
- 45:45that they become. And because I'm looking off and
- 45:49Bill Ward did take his shirt off, unfortunately.
- 45:51But hey, you know what you do you dude.
- 45:54Made me feel a little better about what's going on under
- 45:56here. Other than that.
- 45:59That was it. I was really happy with it.
- 46:02Yeah, I think, I think we were all, we were all pretty pleased.
- 46:06Ken, what are your impressions of both Sabbath and Ozzy solo
- 46:11sets and what would they live up to your expectations?
- 46:14Did they exceed them? How do you feel?
- 46:16How did you feel following all of that stuff from those two?
- 46:19I was ready to play the Oscar music like the Wow.
- 46:26OK, so looking at the Ozzy set first, I think I would have
- 46:32liked for him to play a different song than Suicide
- 46:35Solution from his catalog because yeah, that's a good
- 46:39song. But that and that was the one
- 46:41with controversy that he got. And maybe that was the the
- 46:45thought process behind it, But I think I would have liked to hear
- 46:48something else in there. Maybe like Peter had said,
- 46:51Miracle man might have been fun to hear because that was a good
- 46:54one. And and his register, you know,
- 46:57was still fine. I think he was getting choked up
- 47:01during Mama I'm coming home because I know I was That's a
- 47:05that's a really touching song in the 1st place and and he is
- 47:10dealing with all of this stuff going on.
- 47:12So but but otherwise just just seeing how excited he was to be
- 47:18there. You know, I know he didn't stand
- 47:21up at all And you you almost could see that he wanted to or
- 47:25was probably like, don't you do that?
- 47:28Stay in that chair. You it it was just a great vibe.
- 47:34It was like electrical, you know, and of course, you know,
- 47:37you know, he's going to do crazy train as his closer and that's
- 47:41that's still a bombastic tune so many years later.
- 47:45And then, gosh, scrolling over to Sabbath, like I said, you
- 47:49know, I was the late Comer to Sabbath grow up, my first band
- 47:54being kiss and like Peter, I still lament those those final
- 47:58shows too. So I feel you beat on that.
- 48:01But so yeah, Sabbath was going to do a core batch of songs.
- 48:08I knew one would be War Pigs, one would be Iron Man and
- 48:11definitely Paranoid. I wasn't expecting Nib.
- 48:15And I think that I think that Ozzy was not great on that one,
- 48:19but I don't think it was his fault.
- 48:21They thought he I didn't think he could hear himself because he
- 48:25was not sitting in the same register that he had sang the
- 48:28other song then. So so maybe he lost lost a a bit
- 48:37in the ear monitor. But again, you know, watching
- 48:40the band with minor technical difficulties because figured
- 48:44that something like this would be absolutely flawless without a
- 48:48slight error. Yeah, the setup was great and
- 48:52the, the lighting and the whole delivery and all that stuff, but
- 48:57there was going to be a hiccup here and there with everything
- 48:59being like, I'm sorry, I'm getting, I go all fidgety here.
- 49:04So I, I loved seeing Bill, who was a lot of a lot of my friends
- 49:09first inspiration on drums and again, being a kiss guy.
- 49:13Mine was Peter Crist and then Eric Carr and and the Judas
- 49:16Priest, the the Spinks. So but to stick with that, I
- 49:22thought Sabbath was fantastic. I would have liked maybe two
- 49:25more songs from Sabbath, like swap NIB for maybe maybe fairies
- 49:29wear boots would have been a lot of fun.
- 49:30I think he could have sang that one and and maybe from the
- 49:34grave, even though that was done by by Lamb of God, you know, I
- 49:38still would have rather have Ozzy sing it with Sabbath and
- 49:42you know, but the choices were few and they had to do what they
- 49:45had to do and then wrap the whole thing up.
- 49:47And I think the key point for me though, is a lot of us of a
- 49:52certain age, Paranoid was the very, very first Sabbath song
- 49:57that a lot of my friends and I first heard for Sabbath and as a
- 50:02musician at a certain time. It was one of the first songs we
- 50:07learned to play as a musician with a metal band.
- 50:10You know, I learned Paranoid with a with a number of bands in
- 50:14the head back in the day. So having that be a lot of fans
- 50:19very first Sabbath experience and to watch them wrap it all up
- 50:24with that very same song was kind of a just a moving moment
- 50:28for me and and that's all I got on it.
- 50:36I was caught typing hello hello. Well, I can't hear any.
- 50:52That's me. Just tell us how you feel about
- 50:54Ozzy and Savage Set and then. I will weigh.
- 50:56Into you're great. OK, All right, So I, Peter said
- 51:03so many amazing, insightful things that I it's hard to
- 51:07follow that, but I thought Ozzy set was kind of the comfortable
- 51:15hits that you expect him to do. Mama, I'm coming home.
- 51:19You did hear his voice break. And I think that was not only
- 51:24because his voice broke, but because he was overcome
- 51:28emotionally, as were so many other people.
- 51:31And I think that you could tell he was uncomfortable physically
- 51:37sitting in that chair and in probably a lot of pain, which is
- 51:41why he didn't even try to stand up.
- 51:43But I think he pulled it all together to give the best
- 51:48performance that he could, considering the circumstances.
- 51:52And I thought it was a really good set.
- 51:54And what I loved about Black Sabbath was you could really
- 51:57hear how that band has swing. There is such an incredible vibe
- 52:03when they play together. It's like so many metal bands
- 52:08don't have swing and Black Sabbath just, it shows you why
- 52:15they're one of the greatest groups of musicians and how they
- 52:19really are the kings of heavy metal.
- 52:21I mean, you know, maybe Led Zeppelin gets called that
- 52:26sometimes, but Led Zeppelin is really heavy metal.
- 52:29Led Zeppelin are progressive, Sabbath are metal.
- 52:32And they, you know, Bill Ward pulled it out, did a great job,
- 52:38was a little rusty at 1st and then they just locked in Tony
- 52:42Iommi. It's like he hasn't aged a day
- 52:46in 40 years when he plays. He's fucking phenomenal.
- 52:50And I'd love that they did nib instead of maybe something that
- 52:55was more of a fan favorite because I thought it was a
- 52:57really good showcase for what they do and what they do well.
- 53:02So I thought, and I, I love that it was like, oh, finally it's
- 53:06dark. And now Ozzie and Sabbath can
- 53:08come on in the dark. But yeah, it was great.
- 53:13You know, I don't, I don't know what else to add to it that my
- 53:18companions have not already said.
- 53:20It was no worries, no worries. That was great.
- 53:25I'm going to keep it with me for a second and just share some of
- 53:27my impressions. I did feel like the Aussie set
- 53:30was a little rougher than the Sabbath set, and I think it has
- 53:33to do with tempo and aggression. And I think it's very easy to
- 53:36lean on heavily, extremely distorted.
- 53:41Zach Wylde's guitar tone as opposed to the classic Sabbath
- 53:45sound. And of course, my mom coming
- 53:50home is always very emotional for me.
- 53:51I finally can get through the song without weeping.
- 53:55I didn't. I got a little like 1 little
- 53:57tear this time. But it took me a long time to
- 54:00hear that song and not just bawl my eyes out or perform it or
- 54:03whatever. And, you know, so also the
- 54:12Sabbath set, I wanted to, I think it's very interesting that
- 54:15they were very true to the original tempos of the song.
- 54:19If you ever seen, if you've ever seen Sabbath live, you know,
- 54:24things were much faster for a variety of substances and
- 54:28reasons why, you know, maybe Bill was trying to get out of
- 54:32there so he didn't get set back on fire but by Ozzy.
- 54:35But you know, they did keep true to the original tempos.
- 54:40I think both sets were beautifully curated.
- 54:43I did notice that there was, I felt like it was a lot of
- 54:46Ozzie's voice, whether he pre recorded it or older live
- 54:49recordings or whatever. It didn't sound processed.
- 54:52It did sound natural, but you could hear Zach singing the
- 54:55entire Ozzie solo set of music and you can hear Wakeman singing
- 55:00backups a little too. Super interesting.
- 55:03Now I'm going to move off of that for a second, stay with
- 55:06myself for one minute and we're going to go back around and I
- 55:09want to talk about the other bands we haven't talked about
- 55:11and it's kind of wild. No one has mentioned Metallica,
- 55:14no one has mentioned Guns and Roses, and no one has mentioned
- 55:17Tool or Alice In Chains so much. I think Don mentioned Chains a
- 55:21little. So I'm just really briefly going
- 55:23to say Metallica was brilliant. I wasn't sure how what they were
- 55:27going to do. Metallica does not do well when
- 55:30they're not in control of a situation, which is why when
- 55:32they were doing headline tours and festivals and the same thing
- 55:36next summer when they probably will do additional shows, not
- 55:39just their headline shows, but festivals.
- 55:41They bring their own gear, their own trailers, their own sound,
- 55:44and they let the entire festival use their stuff.
- 55:46So they use their stuff and they're in control with their
- 55:49text, their LD, their sound guy. And they had none of that, I
- 55:53think. And they came out with a cover,
- 55:55which was brilliant. I think James was very loose and
- 55:58not too worried about being pitchy.
- 56:00And Lars was very well in the pocket.
- 56:02And they were Metallica. They are incredible.
- 56:06They are the heirs to the throne, if any.
- 56:09They aren't, you know, and they transcended metal, as we talk
- 56:11about a lot on the other podcast we do.
- 56:14And you know, credit to Pool for even allowing themselves to be
- 56:19on the live stream. I thought they were incredibly
- 56:21professional and great. Come out with a short hit for
- 56:25them. Short song. 6 minutes for them
- 56:26is short. Come out with a hit.
- 56:29Standard cover Tool way without much embellishment.
- 56:32Still pretty great. Surprising and great.
- 56:35And then another hit. Enema and out.
- 56:37Brilliant. Chains I thought was fantastic.
- 56:41I don't know what people are hearing that I'm not hearing,
- 56:43but I thought they were absolutely fire and on point.
- 56:46Their cover was great. Their two originals were smartly
- 56:49chosen because they are shorter. Alice In Chains songs, I think
- 56:53they were very respectful of the time they were given.
- 56:55I thought William was incredible and charismatic and and honestly
- 57:00one of the best singers of the whole day.
- 57:02And Guns. I know people have not really
- 57:05heard Axel sing. Guns and Roses has been reunited
- 57:08for 10 years and and touring for 9, most of nine, 8 1/2 to 9.
- 57:13And this is Axel's range now. He can hit notes.
- 57:17He doesn't have the power and the depth that he used to have
- 57:19vocally. That five octave range is gone
- 57:22from cigarettes and whiskey and booze.
- 57:24But he can hit notes. And maybe it sounds jarring to
- 57:28people because they just remember November rain and they
- 57:30just remember Welcome to the Jungle.
- 57:32But this is how Axel sounds. And I've seen GNR twice, and he
- 57:36was fantastic. So I don't know, you know, guys
- 57:40almost 60 singing songs he wrote when he was 20.
- 57:42So you tell me who else in the world can do such a thing?
- 57:46I'm going to kick it back to you, GAIL, because you did
- 57:48briefly mention this, but other highlight bands or All Star
- 57:52group performances for you? Who did you like?
- 57:56My favorite band of the day was Tool.
- 57:59I I just thought they were fantastic.
- 58:02I I love Tool anyway, but they they made me freak out a little
- 58:08bit and Maynard is a God. I love him and Danny Carey the
- 58:12best. I just love them.
- 58:14They were great. Mastodon, like I said, blew my
- 58:16mind away. I mean, I've always loved that
- 58:18band, but I couldn't believe how good they were.
- 58:21Especially Braun Daylor, who's one of my favorite drummers.
- 58:25I really liked the All Star Band.
- 58:30When? Gosh, who wasn't that?
- 58:33Now the guy from Ghost singing that song.
- 58:37I can't even remember what it was now.
- 58:39What was it? Bark of the Moon?
- 58:40Yeah. Even though his voice does not
- 58:43have a high range, I thought he had a really good performance.
- 58:46I liked the way he looked and I liked everyone else in the band.
- 58:49That was excellent. I thought Lamb of God did a
- 58:52pretty good job with their covers.
- 58:56And of course, you know, they're a great band anyway, although I
- 59:00miss Chris. And who else did I like?
- 59:05I did. I did think Runs Guns and Roses
- 59:08were really good. Although like he said, Axel
- 59:11doesn't sing like he used to. But he's not 20 years old
- 59:14anymore and I think he looked pretty good.
- 59:18I at first I didn't recognize him with the short haircut.
- 59:21I'm like, who's that? But yeah, he did good.
- 59:23And I thought the band sounded great.
- 59:26I always loved Duff and Slash, so that was a good performance
- 59:30for me. Who else?
- 59:32Who did I write down? I don't know.
- 59:38Gosh, there were so many. There wasn't much that I didn't
- 59:42think wasn't good. I actually, I'm not the hugest
- 59:45Metallica fan. I could take or leave Metallica.
- 59:48I thought Hetfield's voice is pretty much gone, but maybe that
- 59:52was the feed I was hearing where you could barely hear him.
- 59:57Gosh, what else? Alice In Chains were very good.
- 59:59I haven't really seen them in years and years.
- 1:00:02I didn't even know who was singing for them anymore.
- 1:00:04I had to look up his name. But he was great and I loved a
- 1:00:11lot of the All Star stuff. I loved seeing Nuno I loved.
- 1:00:16Who else did I love? I I wasn't so into Hailstorm but
- 1:00:25I thought she did a good job fronting the All Star band and
- 1:00:29Don will appreciate this. When I first saw the video of
- 1:00:32her in that yellow dress I was like is that Taylor Swift?
- 1:00:37Because it was far enough away that it just looked like a
- 1:00:39blonde woman. But not, sadly, not Taylor
- 1:00:42Swift, because that would have been really hilarious.
- 1:00:46They missed an opportunity. Dolly did one of the greetings
- 1:00:49for Ozzy during the broadcast and how much she loves Black
- 1:00:51Sabbath. You know, Dolly's husband who
- 1:00:53just passed away, Carl, after 50 years of marriage.
- 1:00:56There's a huge classic rock and heavy metal fin.
- 1:00:59So she she gave a greeting to Sabbath and Ozzy.
- 1:01:02I love you. I wish I could be there with
- 1:01:03you. Maybe we'll do it again
- 1:01:05sometime. I was like, OK.
- 1:01:06But it was what lovely to have her.
- 1:01:09She did represent, you know, women were sadly lot not hugely
- 1:01:14represented. And Tony is married to a heavy
- 1:01:16metal singer also, even though she hasn't done anything in 20
- 1:01:18something years, 25 years. But Maria from Drain STH is
- 1:01:22Tony's wife. But you know, fantastic to have
- 1:01:27Dolly there. And I thought Lizzie Hale did a
- 1:01:29great job. She's a little maligned.
- 1:01:31They have a new record coming out.
- 1:01:34She's talented, she's just not my thing, but she makes some
- 1:01:38serious ass and they're the set was good for if you like that.
- 1:01:41Band, they are the band that has a new record coming soon, them
- 1:01:45and Gojira. So I think we'll be interesting
- 1:01:48to see if the. Same hero were amazing, I love
- 1:01:52Kira. Yeah, I was actually annoyed
- 1:01:54that they played where they did in this in the running order.
- 1:01:57But like, it makes sense now that you think.
- 1:01:58I think a lot of this stuff, I didn't talk about this.
- 1:02:00I think a lot of this stuff was based on streaming numbers and
- 1:02:03not like album sales or history. But anyhow, good stuff from you,
- 1:02:07GAIL. I'm going to kick it over to
- 1:02:08Ken. Ken, tell me, I know you didn't
- 1:02:11see Slayer, which is OK Who did you see that you enjoyed?
- 1:02:14What were your impressions of, you know, some of the other
- 1:02:17bands? Not Sabbath and.
- 1:02:19So like I said, since I was, I was really not, I glued to it.
- 1:02:23So I, I did see some Slayer. Like I said, I was watching
- 1:02:28through Facebook feeds and I would scroll through and I, I
- 1:02:31knew about 5 people there and then unfortunately every single
- 1:02:34one of them put up like a clip or or two of every band.
- 1:02:39I guess before that all got shot down.
- 1:02:41I thought Lamb of God was tight. They're always tight.
- 1:02:45Kind of weird hearing them do a SAB song but that's what
- 1:02:49everybody was there for. Slayer, like I said was was
- 1:02:54another lesson in brutality, but I really didn't hear them via
- 1:02:57the way I was watching it. I thought Metallica was
- 1:03:01flawless. I would have liked them to play
- 1:03:03maybe 2 Sabbath songs instead of like all of their hits and one
- 1:03:07Sabbath song. I did love Papa singing Bark at
- 1:03:12the Moon. I was blown away by Steven Tyler
- 1:03:15singing Led Zeppelin when he retired, saying he could never
- 1:03:19sing again. That was pretty wild.
- 1:03:21So yeah, wow. And no, that's not typing.
- 1:03:28I'm banging. Sorry, Don.
- 1:03:33Let's see. I liked what I saw from
- 1:03:38Hailstorm, but I didn't see Anthrax.
- 1:03:40I didn't see Tool. I felt bad about that.
- 1:03:43I didn't see Pantera. So, you know, I liked, I liked
- 1:03:47all of those, you know, and that was fine for me.
- 1:03:49And I'm I, I have to imagine that this whole thing will be on
- 1:03:53a DVD of some kind to purchase. And I will buy it in a heartbeat
- 1:03:58just to, you know, just to own it for historical purposes.
- 1:04:03But. But yeah, I thought the whole
- 1:04:06thing was very impressive, you know, so.
- 1:04:10Right on. Allow me to jump in and say that
- 1:04:12at ghostcoltmag.com at the pin post, we have a recap of the
- 1:04:15entire show written by a coloner.
- 1:04:17Omar Cut this Cordy and we have all the set lists and all the
- 1:04:21guests of the Super groups if you want to refresh yourself and
- 1:04:24things like that. I thought I might have mentioned
- 1:04:26that before we all joined Don de Lamont.
- 1:04:29Tell me about the other bands you are Donnie Hot take in the
- 1:04:33chat. So tell me Don was not there.
- 1:04:37So Don is very disappointed that Don Dawkin was not invited.
- 1:04:40But tell me who you liked, didn't like, who was a stand out
- 1:04:44for you, who you definitely had some opinions about, who was not
- 1:04:47good. Man, Don Dawkin would have been
- 1:04:49breaking the chains though. Man, that would have been great.
- 1:04:51But anyway, and so I made little bullets because I can go
- 1:04:55rambling on ADHD Don, everybody knows, so I'm just going to read
- 1:04:59for each of my bullets real quick.
- 1:05:00So for Mastodon, I basically thought they started off really
- 1:05:03strong. I was like, what a great fucking
- 1:05:06like opening band. Like they came out, you know,
- 1:05:10shit flying already. Like they just didn't even ease
- 1:05:13into it. They just went right into it.
- 1:05:14I thought they were great. By the time the second song I
- 1:05:17was a little annoyed. I don't love them, never really
- 1:05:20did. I don't think that they're bad,
- 1:05:23I just, I just never really liked them sonically.
- 1:05:26And by the time the second song was halfway through, I
- 1:05:29remembered why. But that cover of Super Not was
- 1:05:32incredible. And I love the fact that their
- 1:05:34drummer sings better than Troy, which is pretty funny.
- 1:05:37So Rival Sons, though, that is a killer example of a band who you
- 1:05:43can tell has a Sabbath influence, but they don't
- 1:05:46necessarily wear it on their sleeve until they play a Sabbath
- 1:05:50song and then you fucking know that they can pack a punch.
- 1:05:53I Rival Sons has always been just a class act band.
- 1:05:58I've seen them four times. Never saw a bad show by them.
- 1:06:02And I, I, I don't know, they're just, they were great.
- 1:06:05I thought they did good. I think they were a little bit
- 1:06:07of the odd man out with the lineup, but it was really cool
- 1:06:11to watch the fans, you know, the audience, really grasp onto
- 1:06:14them. I thought Anthrax was fucking
- 1:06:17incredible. I've never seen Anthrax with
- 1:06:19Belladonna play a bad show, and Into the Void was fucking off
- 1:06:24the charts good. And Scott Ian's guitar tone, how
- 1:06:28he mimicked Tony's tone was just incredible.
- 1:06:32And he has got to be the best rhythm guitar player in metal
- 1:06:36since Hetfield isn't anymore. So I thought they were great.
- 1:06:41Hailstorm like that woman Lizzie Hale.
- 1:06:44Her voice alone could headline a stadium.
- 1:06:47I I wish the songs were as good as they are.
- 1:06:52Like they're an incredible band. I thought their original stuff
- 1:06:56didn't really hit very hard, but they made Perry Mason actually
- 1:07:00sound like a good song, which I thought was mind blowing.
- 1:07:03It was so great. Lamb of God not my thing.
- 1:07:07I've tried again, just not my deal.
- 1:07:10But I will say I love them. I it's hard to they're like,
- 1:07:14it's like Foo Fighters. Like I hate the music but I love
- 1:07:18girl. That's kind of how I feel about
- 1:07:20Lamb of God as a whole. I thought Children of the Grave
- 1:07:23was good, wasn't great because he was trying to sing at 1st and
- 1:07:28it didn't really work. So aside from that Alice In
- 1:07:33Chains was fucking stellar. I thought they were great.
- 1:07:35No, no big notes there, but Duvall is a class act with the
- 1:07:40fringe jacket which was incredible.
- 1:07:43Then we also had I don't want to go into all the the jam bands or
- 1:07:48whatever they were doing. Pantera.
- 1:07:50Disappointing. I know I'm probably a get beat
- 1:07:54up for this but I will die on that hill.
- 1:07:56I thought they were just not great.
- 1:07:58Coming to dawn coming. I couldn't.
- 1:08:02It was disappointing about them. Let me hear you tell tell.
- 1:08:04I couldn't even make it through the sentence.
- 1:08:06But actually, you know what it was, was that it was that I, I
- 1:08:10think that I just struggle with Pantera because to me they were
- 1:08:14such a great fucking band at one time.
- 1:08:17It it just didn't sound good to me.
- 1:08:19Like they sounded tired. Like Zach.
- 1:08:22Zach just sounded kind of sloppy.
- 1:08:24He sounded off especially during Cowboys from Hell.
- 1:08:27Like it seemed like a lot of times he was kind of struggling,
- 1:08:31kind of fumbling around. I, I didn't think their energy
- 1:08:34was was very good, which was disappointing to me.
- 1:08:38And I thought Planet Caravan was a horrible, horrible choice of a
- 1:08:43song for them to play. It did not translate well at all
- 1:08:46in a live setting. I love the version off of Far
- 1:08:49Beyond Driven, but I just did not think it sounded great.
- 1:08:53And I also think that they kind of fell flat on electric
- 1:08:56funeral, especially since rival sons had did it earlier in the
- 1:09:00day and did it like 5 times better.
- 1:09:04I'm still kind of annoyed that they actually repeated a cover.
- 1:09:07I mean, you know, I'm. Surprised there weren't more
- 1:09:09covers repeated actually. I had thought like maybe there
- 1:09:12would be no repeats the whole day and it would be deep cuts
- 1:09:15and other shit, but no. Yeah.
- 1:09:18Don, unless you have anything else.
- 1:09:20No, I was just going to say just just in a nutshell.
- 1:09:22Tool blew my mind. Makes me want to deep dive into
- 1:09:25them because I never have. I keep forgetting to Slayer with
- 1:09:29Slayer. They're a consistently good in
- 1:09:30Wicked World. It was great to hear Carrie King
- 1:09:33actually play a guitar. Guns and Roses I could have done
- 1:09:36without Metallica. What did you say to me about
- 1:09:39Carrie in the chat though? In the private chat.
- 1:09:42What did I say about King? Yeah, Carrie King.
- 1:09:46I can't get this image out of my head, but Carrie King looks like
- 1:09:48he's one of those guys that if you went to high school with
- 1:09:50him, he's all tough looking and he's like this.
- 1:09:54But then you could just walk over to him and get in his face
- 1:09:57and then take a mozzarella stick off his plate and eat it and he
- 1:10:00would just look sad. You know I drink your milkshake,
- 1:10:03Carrie. And he would just be like, be
- 1:10:05like, oh man, it was mine. But anyway, it was great to hear
- 1:10:08him play like that. And I thought Slayer.
- 1:10:10I mean, I thought Metallica was just disappointing to me.
- 1:10:13All right, fair enough. Fair enough.
- 1:10:15Going all over to Peter. Peter, how many years has Tom
- 1:10:19Araya aged in the last five years?
- 1:10:21Like 100? Oh my God.
- 1:10:25Right. Am I alone here on this or what?
- 1:10:27No. No, no, it's weird.
- 1:10:29I felt like he turned a corner and never came back right.
- 1:10:32He was weird, like he was like fine, and then all of a sudden
- 1:10:34wasn't. But I have theories about that,
- 1:10:38which I will not repeat on the show.
- 1:10:40But so here's how I'm feeling And there I love that that Don
- 1:10:45like broke it down. I I was like nodding my head and
- 1:10:48shaking my head and disagreeing and agreeing with some of the
- 1:10:51Don stuff. Here's how I felt and and I'm
- 1:10:53going to jump into the bands I really loved and the ones that
- 1:10:57was kind of like, I assume that you want to do it that way.
- 1:11:01So I thought I was super excited that my boys, rival sons came
- 1:11:05out and ruled the day for me. I think that they probably I'm
- 1:11:09hoping they picked up a host of fans.
- 1:11:11I thought that Don did a great job breaking down like they were
- 1:11:14kind of a little bit of the odd man out.
- 1:11:16But you, if you really listen to Rival Sons, you wouldn't be that
- 1:11:19weirded out because you'd know their first, maybe 4, maybe 5
- 1:11:23Sabbath records. Definitely important in their
- 1:11:26formation. You heard it when they, you
- 1:11:28know, when, when they were playing and they did the covers
- 1:11:31and the the cover. They did.
- 1:11:32And I just thought they were. I thought they were tremendous
- 1:11:36all around. I also think sonically they
- 1:11:37sounded amazing. They sounded huge and I was
- 1:11:40really happy for them. The other band I thought sounded
- 1:11:44great. Keith, I think you mentioned
- 1:11:45them. I thought Alice In Chains was
- 1:11:47fantastic. I think Willem Duvall proves
- 1:11:50time and time again to to put on the shoes of a lead singer that
- 1:11:54in in that in his place. I mean, Lane Staley was so
- 1:11:58iconic, such a unique, powerful, important voice for, you know,
- 1:12:02like, by all intents and purposes, my generation and a
- 1:12:06lot of the music I was listening to.
- 1:12:08I got to see Alice In Chains the first time they played in New
- 1:12:11York, opening up for Extreme at the Cat Club and to watch them
- 1:12:14just rocket and do all sorts of things.
- 1:12:17And we and we lost that voice. And for Willem Duvall to step in
- 1:12:21and to now put out these great Alice In Chains records are a
- 1:12:25little bit different, but still in the wheelhouse and then take
- 1:12:27control. Like people were just all about
- 1:12:29it from the beginning. I think his performance is
- 1:12:31great. I know the feeds for different
- 1:12:33people was out. I thought they were terrific
- 1:12:36though, and they got the memo. They they they went there and
- 1:12:38they rocked it. I was super proud.
- 1:12:40I'm going to be now I'm going to say a bunch of things.
- 1:12:42I think there were a bunch of bands on the bill that were fine
- 1:12:45sonically, but performance wise were flat for me.
- 1:12:49In other words, they sounded great.
- 1:12:50There's nothing wrong with them, but I felt like on a day like
- 1:12:53this, I wanted them to be superstar bands for those few
- 1:12:57minutes they're on stage. So I felt that way about Tool.
- 1:13:00They played fine. They were great technically,
- 1:13:03didn't knock me out. Pantera for me felt flat, as Don
- 1:13:09was saying. I felt that.
- 1:13:10I agreed with Don. I felt they sound a little
- 1:13:12tired. But to show you the power of
- 1:13:14metal, they went over so well because those songs are so
- 1:13:18great. And I think especially their
- 1:13:20original stuff that they play, you know, when they did walk,
- 1:13:23people were like all about it. And you know, Phil's voices
- 1:13:27neither here nor there, but they were an example to me.
- 1:13:30I expected a little bit more from them and they kind of fell
- 1:13:32flat. I'm a huge Anthrax fan, love
- 1:13:35them. I think their energy was great.
- 1:13:37The sound wasn't terrific for them.
- 1:13:39So I felt like like I couldn't hear Frank Bellows bass at all.
- 1:13:44And I felt they kind of came off a little bit flat as a result
- 1:13:48too, even though they played fine.
- 1:13:51But I agree kind of with what people saying, like Kefi, if
- 1:13:54you're talking about the original, like the top bands of
- 1:13:56the day, Metallica, you know, yeah, I mean, they're they're a
- 1:13:59little more corporate kind of metal band.
- 1:14:03You know, they're standing on their own precipice, so to
- 1:14:05speak. They they delivered.
- 1:14:07They were totally professional. Sounded good.
- 1:14:09Looked really cool when they came out.
- 1:14:12We're having a good time. I I thought their set was a
- 1:14:14little long. I would have liked them to play
- 1:14:17less again. They did not get the Queen memo.
- 1:14:20Play Less songs come out and destroy me.
- 1:14:23Battery was great. They should have done Battery,
- 1:14:25They should have done Master of Puppets and Junior's Eyes like
- 1:14:28they did and that's it. I think it would have been
- 1:14:30fantastic. I would have liked maybe an
- 1:14:32extra Aussie or Saba song as a result, because I mean, we see
- 1:14:36Metallica all the time, so I kind of felt like I didn't need
- 1:14:39to see any more on that. But I and I wanted to say
- 1:14:42something about Hailstorm because a lot of people were
- 1:14:45talking about it and I just want to make one quick comment about
- 1:14:47the jams. I think Lizzie, Lizzie Hale is a
- 1:14:50terrific instrument. I think she overused it and I
- 1:14:53don't remember who said it, but someone was talking about having
- 1:14:56better songs and I feel like maybe it was Kenny mentioned
- 1:14:59that or maybe it was GAIL. But I felt the same way.
- 1:15:02I felt like her voice is very powerful and I love her.
- 1:15:06Her whole front woman thing, I think she overdoes it and
- 1:15:10reminds me that she can sing all the time.
- 1:15:12I think if she has better songs, they're going to be like
- 1:15:15Untouchable because they're really, they're super talented.
- 1:15:18I just think the songs are a little like whatever but very
- 1:15:21good at what they do. And I also want to say I thought
- 1:15:25Gojira was incredible sonically. I thought they sound great.
- 1:15:28I think their performance was good.
- 1:15:29Same like with Mastodon, they were good, good performances,
- 1:15:32powerful. Didn't knock me out though.
- 1:15:35They were just like they were good but I want a little more.
- 1:15:39I do want to say this in terms of the jam band stuff, I thought
- 1:15:42Steven Tyler totally knocked me out and was a welcome surprise
- 1:15:46because of all Stevens problems vocally and what happened to him
- 1:15:50and all sorts of stuff. So to see him sound that great
- 1:15:54and I know Keith, I think you mentioned who sounds as good
- 1:15:57like with Axl Rose, who sounds as good 40 years later, Steven
- 1:16:00Tyler apparently does. I mean, that was pretty
- 1:16:05phenomenal and and I think he knew that he had it and he was
- 1:16:09you can see that he was really excited about performing for
- 1:16:12people again. So that was really cool to see
- 1:16:14that. I didn't anticipate that and him
- 1:16:16and Nuno were killing it. I know that they've done that
- 1:16:18stuff in the past. They sounded great and really in
- 1:16:21the pocket. I want to say two things with
- 1:16:23two people that sounded terrible and are people that I love.
- 1:16:27Sammy Hagar, if you're going to do Flying High again, learn the
- 1:16:31song. Learn the song, dude.
- 1:16:34You can still sing. You're you're, you're still,
- 1:16:37you're an icon. You know, if you did Montrose
- 1:16:40alone the first album and nothing else, I would adore you.
- 1:16:44But you have such a storied career.
- 1:16:46You couldn't take 20 minutes and a half an hour and learn the
- 1:16:49damn song, or at least kind of know the melodies.
- 1:16:53I mean, super, super disappointing and kind of
- 1:16:55unacceptable as a person that level and that kind of stage and
- 1:16:59what was going on and such a great song and kind of perfect
- 1:17:03for your voice. Totally ruined it.
- 1:17:05I was really, really actually annoyed with him, angry at him
- 1:17:09because I expect much more from him.
- 1:17:12Axl Rose, dude, if you're if you if you can't like really sing
- 1:17:17the way you're doing, you can't pick Sabbath bloody Sabbath and
- 1:17:20you have to stay on the beat. It was terrible and it was
- 1:17:24really embarrassing and his the set that they did was really
- 1:17:27weird, like him trying to do almost an Elton John thing in
- 1:17:30the beginning. Dude, you're on the metals
- 1:17:32biggest stage. Go go there.
- 1:17:35Just do what you guys do. I mean, really, I felt like
- 1:17:38those two things were pretty terrible, but the worst of the
- 1:17:42evening and I'm and I'm not a hater.
- 1:17:44I'm actually a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, especially the
- 1:17:47first like 6 or 7 records. Billy, my brother, if you're
- 1:17:52going to be on stage, if you're going to be on that kind of
- 1:17:55stage, you can't pick Halford song, Halford song to do out of
- 1:17:59the gate and and sing like that. You can't.
- 1:18:02Or just play your Flying V and Rocket, have someone else sing
- 1:18:05lead because he's a solid rhythm guitar player and he's always
- 1:18:08been an unabashed metal fan. But Billy, that was atrocious.
- 1:18:13It wasn't bad. It was absolutely atrocious and
- 1:18:15unacceptable. I think his breaking the law
- 1:18:18wasn't as bad as the Sabbath stuff was just fucking
- 1:18:21unbelievably terrible. I I agree, I think.
- 1:18:24The breaking the law is at least in his range.
- 1:18:27And. Just what the fuck?
- 1:18:29Like, OK, Tom Morello, you got to take an LA little bit on
- 1:18:32this, Peter, that was great. I'm going to I'm going to rap
- 1:18:35for a second before I we, we're going to go back to the we're
- 1:18:39getting a few more questions to get through and we're going to
- 1:18:42address the controversy with Sharon in a second and who was
- 1:18:45kicked off because we know who it is now.
- 1:18:48I think we have we have a good idea who it is.
- 1:18:51Yeah, Man, Corgan was fucking terrible.
- 1:18:53Some of these choices were. I don't need.
- 1:18:55I understand that Ozzy's a Montrose fan.
- 1:19:00Fuck rock candy. I don't want to hear this song.
- 1:19:02I'm a hater. I don't like Hagar.
- 1:19:04Everyone knows I'm Van Halen, not Van Agar only, but you know,
- 1:19:08Ben Hagar has some songs and he's a good singer and I'm not
- 1:19:11going to be a complete Dick about it, but like, he sucked
- 1:19:14and I don't want to hear fucking rock candy for 6 minutes.
- 1:19:17Fucking no. Tyler shocked me, but let's not
- 1:19:21fucking, you know, trip over our own Dicks for a second here.
- 1:19:25And I don't, you know, Joe Perry then tweeting like, maybe we
- 1:19:28should come back. No, you shouldn't.
- 1:19:30You stop for a reason. This guy can't tour.
- 1:19:32He tried to sing Back in the Saddle as the first song on the
- 1:19:35set every night and blew his voice out almost permanently.
- 1:19:38They're like you might never talk again if you keep doing
- 1:19:40this. So like, I don't want him to
- 1:19:42come back. Like let that be the exclamation
- 1:19:45point on an otherwise great career for a pretty mid guy, a
- 1:19:48creepy pet sex test guy. But you know, I love Aerosmith.
- 1:19:52America doesn't have really that many legend status bands after
- 1:19:55Metallica, right? And and Aerosmith.
- 1:19:57So Corgan was horribly mis miscast.
- 1:20:04And I think Travis Barker, other than when he played with the
- 1:20:07Super group, the drum off was whacked.
- 1:20:09He was. He over when he was not
- 1:20:11prepared. He over he didn't practice a
- 1:20:13song, you could tell. And then he like overplayed his
- 1:20:17solo and overplayed his time in the solo and during.
- 1:20:21If you watch the camera reaction, Chad Smith is next to
- 1:20:24him and he's like, whatever, this guy sucks.
- 1:20:26Fuck this, I'm going to do my solo.
- 1:20:28Chad was ready, Danny was ready. He going to show up and not be
- 1:20:31ready. You just show up because I'm
- 1:20:32cool. Like I don't need him there.
- 1:20:34I understand that he's a huge, iconic international producer
- 1:20:38and Blink is huge, right? And it's cool to have a younger
- 1:20:41punk rock guy be there and say that he was inspired by Bill
- 1:20:44Ward and stuff. But or Puffy or Castillo or any
- 1:20:47of these great drummers. I'm going to.
- 1:20:50Before we talk about who was kicked off, I do want to address
- 1:20:53the elephant in the room. Only Aussie Sabbath was played.
- 1:20:57I had predicted this. So pat on the back to me.
- 1:21:00I'm going to break my hand off patting myself on the back.
- 1:21:03No deal, no Gillan, no Tony Martin, nothing represented from
- 1:21:09any in any way shape or form. Not a visual image, nobody with
- 1:21:13a shirt on, nothing. Just really quick in a minute or
- 1:21:17less. Is this, was this a terrible
- 1:21:20mistake? Did you expect this?
- 1:21:22Did you think differently? GAIL, tell me if you think we
- 1:21:25should have seen some Dio in there.
- 1:21:27Can I tell you it never crossed my mind.
- 1:21:31It never crossed my mind. Now that you say it, I'm like,
- 1:21:33oh, yeah. Dio.
- 1:21:35Well, first of all, he couldn't show up because he's dead.
- 1:21:38OK, RIP, Ronnie. But when I think of Black
- 1:21:43Sabbath, I think of Bill and Geezer and Tony and Ozzy.
- 1:21:49That's just the way I am. So I I didn't feel any lack of
- 1:21:55respect or any void or any vacant space in that department.
- 1:22:01Fair enough. Also, sound off in the comments
- 1:22:04if you think we should have gotten some other errors of
- 1:22:07Sabbath represented Ken Pierce. Should we get some other
- 1:22:10cassette? Should we have had some
- 1:22:12acknowledgement of the other errors of Sabbath during this
- 1:22:14thing? When this was called the final
- 1:22:19Black Sabbath show and then it was called Ozzy's Last Hurrah, I
- 1:22:26immediately felt we were never going to see anything else other
- 1:22:31Sabbath. What might have worked would
- 1:22:36have been maybe video in Summit Dead Space showing the history
- 1:22:43of Sabbath from the beginning and then ending with how they
- 1:22:48reunited several years ago and then reunited again for the end
- 1:22:54before we went back to the beginning.
- 1:22:56So, you know, maybe something that represented them, but I did
- 1:22:59not really expect any of those other bands to members to
- 1:23:04participate at all. Fair enough, the Tony Martin
- 1:23:11stand is not here Nick Boom boom Cameron.
- 1:23:13So Don will be his proxy. Don, what do you say?
- 1:23:16I know also what a huge DO fan you are too A.
- 1:23:19Huge fucking DO fan. Massive Tony Martin fan again.
- 1:23:24Diana Hill for Tony Martin. I thought he was incredible, but
- 1:23:28honestly, like this was a celebration of Ozzy and Black
- 1:23:32Sabbath. It was Ozzy.
- 1:23:35Black Sabbath is what I what I would think of it as.
- 1:23:39Part of me would have loved to have seen at least an homage of
- 1:23:43whatever to some of the members of Black Sabbath over the years
- 1:23:47because Black Sabbath was its own entity.
- 1:23:50Apart from the two, I think that there was very heavy-handed on
- 1:23:54Sharon's part to keep bringing them together and to keep a kind
- 1:23:57of alienate the other aspects of it.
- 1:24:00And, you know, I mean, that's fine.
- 1:24:02That's their call. I'm kind of like GAIL, in the
- 1:24:06moment, I wasn't even thinking about it because I was so
- 1:24:09focused in and honed in on, you know, what was being done and
- 1:24:14being played. And so it kind of, I kind of
- 1:24:18think it was a good call to be honest.
- 1:24:20All right, fair enough, man. I'll give it to you there.
- 1:24:23Peter Wilson. I know Peter's also a fan like I
- 1:24:26am a born again. Not even a zero to hero.
- 1:24:29Not even a zero to hero. Come.
- 1:24:31On. Come on, SO.
- 1:24:33Ian Dylan is alive, by the way, and could a game.
- 1:24:36So. So here's my feeling and his
- 1:24:38really good friends with Tony Iommi still.
- 1:24:40So here's my thing. I knew what was going to happen
- 1:24:43because Sharon's in control. This is this was, remember, the
- 1:24:46other purpose is to make sure that Ozzy's legacy and Sabbath's
- 1:24:50the classic line up of of Sabbath is just remembered as
- 1:24:55such. So it was, you know, it was kind
- 1:24:58of like honing in on that. But like I felt at the last kiss
- 1:25:01shows where I was like, you know, and how I felt about Kiss
- 1:25:05being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and no Eric
- 1:25:07Carr and no Bruce Kulick. It's like really guys like I, I
- 1:25:11feel the same way about Sabbath because it would be different if
- 1:25:16if after Ozzy left, they kind of dropped off commercially to the
- 1:25:21level of let's say a la Tony Martin.
- 1:25:23Sorry, I know Don's losing his mind right now, but like were
- 1:25:27those records just didn't quite sell?
- 1:25:29They didn't catch on. They can't they had like it's
- 1:25:31own little thing, right? But Deal, I mean, those records
- 1:25:36sold, those two deal albums sold better than the three last
- 1:25:40Aussie records with Sabbath. Let's talk truth, right?
- 1:25:45And they're incredible metal records.
- 1:25:47You know, Mob rules. And you know, I mean, Mob rules
- 1:25:51in Heaven and Hell are just like some of the most important metal
- 1:25:54records ever made. And you know, and Sav was
- 1:25:58involved. Hey, people talk crap about Born
- 1:26:00Again. Born Again was a top five record
- 1:26:03in England and and sold well, right?
- 1:26:07And it's an incredible record. I think they could have done
- 1:26:10something clever. It would have been cool if maybe
- 1:26:13they even did it early in the day, you know, before we got too
- 1:26:16heavy, heavy-handed into the classic Saba stuff.
- 1:26:20I do think it was a little bit of a weird thing, but I mean,
- 1:26:24hey, listen, maybe they never forgave the fact that Ryan James
- 1:26:27Zeo didn't want Sabbath to open up for Ozzy all those years ago.
- 1:26:32And, you know, and you had Rob Halford that had to take, take
- 1:26:35the the place of of DO for two gigs or something like that.
- 1:26:39Maybe that was what it was about.
- 1:26:41But I, I definitely I agree with you, Keithy.
- 1:26:44I feel like there was like, you know, and even like Tony Martin,
- 1:26:46like he made a lot of records. He kept the Sabbath name alive
- 1:26:50for many years. I think there could have been
- 1:26:52some kind of tasteful tip of the hat.
- 1:26:55Didn't even have to be a big performance thing.
- 1:26:57Maybe it was even the short film kind of thing.
- 1:26:59Something cool in the middle of the day would have been nice,
- 1:27:01especially because Ronnie, why is that with us anymore?
- 1:27:04I think it would have been a classy thing for her to do.
- 1:27:07And everyone's so much older now.
- 1:27:08It's like, I hope you've gotten over all the crap.
- 1:27:10Apparently not. But I mean, it's the same thing
- 1:27:13as as tied into like the, you know, some gaping holes of
- 1:27:17people that like bands that were not there where you're like, how
- 1:27:22are they not there? I'm going to keep it.
- 1:27:25With you and go right to that. Ken in the private chat has
- 1:27:28mentioned Glenn Hughes also. A pity.
- 1:27:30A pretty glaring omission that he's still friends with Geezer
- 1:27:33and Iommi and Bill and they've all worked together and Glenn
- 1:27:37has worked with all those other All Star guys in one capacity or
- 1:27:40another. Been on tour with them, other
- 1:27:42things. So it seems as though it's
- 1:27:45Mötley Crüe got disinvited from the original thing.
- 1:27:49Doesn't surprise me. No one needs or wants this.
- 1:27:53They cannot play or sing. I disagree.
- 1:27:57OK, I don't. No one wants Mötley Crüe, this
- 1:28:00sort of thing. Except Nikki.
- 1:28:02Can I just say one thing about Keith?
- 1:28:04You guys just say one thing about that.
- 1:28:06So here's here's where I'm coming from on this, right?
- 1:28:10Thinking back to the first time I saw Crew opening up for Ozzy
- 1:28:13Osbourne, obviously 40 years ago right?
- 1:28:16But I know there's so much has happened in Crew universe since
- 1:28:20and I will not defend Crew with the exception of the John Krabi
- 1:28:23album post Shad the Devil. They they first two albums.
- 1:28:28What I'm talking about. As I said in the chat, if if
- 1:28:31Crew did the right thing and got the Queen memo and they did live
- 1:28:35wire. Forget about doing Sabbath.
- 1:28:37Don't do any Sabbath. The assholes do live wire Shout
- 1:28:41out the Devil looks that kill Ozzy.
- 1:28:43Thank you for bringing us on our first major tour.
- 1:28:46And even flying vocals for Vince.
- 1:28:48I'm telling you, that would have gone over well.
- 1:28:50It would have been a bit different because people forget
- 1:28:53that Sabbath was so important. They influenced a lot of their
- 1:28:57their choral structures. You can't imagine Mick Marr's
- 1:28:59playing half of what he played. Certainly on Shout Out the
- 1:29:02Devil, if there was no Sabbath, and I think it would have been,
- 1:29:05it would have been a cool thing. And you know me, I'm the first
- 1:29:07to attack Vince Neil. I think he's absolutely
- 1:29:09dreadful. But again, if Axl Rose could do
- 1:29:13whatever he was doing on that stage and a lot of the other
- 1:29:16things we saw, I don't know. I think that crew, especially
- 1:29:20Tommy Lee, he would have come out there and John 5 is playing,
- 1:29:24I mean. Killed.
- 1:29:26The ban the ban kills right now. So you you throw in a million
- 1:29:30like things on on Vince Neil's voice like he did to Ozzy.
- 1:29:33Have him half sing the crowd half sing.
- 1:29:35I think it would have been a cool.
- 1:29:37Trust me, if you can imagine that line up him like them.
- 1:29:40I'm doing like 3 early cuts. I think it would have been a
- 1:29:43kind of cool, weird kind of thing to show how important
- 1:29:47Sabbath was to all ears of metal.
- 1:29:50Nice, Don. I'm going to kick it back to
- 1:29:52you. One band that wasn't there, that
- 1:29:55should have been. Or artist anybody.
- 1:30:00Oh boy, you really caught me on. I actually believe it or not.
- 1:30:08Keith, you're so cute. Of all the different bands I
- 1:30:10know, it sounds the same. I thought Ugly Kid Joe should
- 1:30:12have been there. I saw on the No More Tours tour,
- 1:30:17it was Ugly Kid Joe Faster Pussycat opening up and Ugly Kid
- 1:30:20Joe had developed a very, very tight knit relationship with
- 1:30:25Ozzy and Sharon and to the point where, you know, I mean, they
- 1:30:30became part of the family early on.
- 1:30:32I mean, they covered, what was it, Sweet Leaf on their EP, so I
- 1:30:39would have loved to have seen them play because I think not
- 1:30:41only they're a great band, they do Sabbath really well.
- 1:30:44I thought it would have been fun to have seen them.
- 1:30:47But seeing Whitfield Crane though was a gift in itself
- 1:30:50because I think he is terribly underrated when it comes to such
- 1:30:54a great singer. And he sings Sabbath, probably
- 1:30:58as good if not better than most. He's in Kirk's cover band, Kirk
- 1:31:02Hamlet's cover band, the Wedding Band, which I've seen him and
- 1:31:04him and Mark from Death Angel share the vocals.
- 1:31:06And by the way, when briefly Whitfield Crane was the singer
- 1:31:10of Life of Agony, his condition to come into the band was we
- 1:31:13have to cover Symptom of the Universe.
- 1:31:14And they did it and they slammed it and they used to do it live
- 1:31:17with him, which was amazing. Ken Pierce, Who is missing from
- 1:31:22this lineup? Who should have been there?
- 1:31:25Artist or band? I'll go to.
- 1:31:30I would have loved to see Priest, but Priest is on tour,
- 1:31:34maybe three. I think maybe Uriah Heep would
- 1:31:37have been a nice choice. They would have easily been able
- 1:31:43to pull out a cover of Sabbath and and then do a handful of
- 1:31:50absolute staples that, you know, melt faces today even and and
- 1:31:57dare I even say Megadeth. You know, Megadeth probably
- 1:32:00would have been a great choice also.
- 1:32:02So, you know, very simple and to the point.
- 1:32:08Again, you know, it was nice to hear somebody sing Judas Priest
- 1:32:11kind of on that. But I do, you know, I, I, I do
- 1:32:19think that Halford was missed And, you know, we saw KK that
- 1:32:23was great. But you know, let's let's get
- 1:32:26the rest of them. So, you know, that's my take.
- 1:32:30Nice. Work.
- 1:32:31Nice work. Yeah, Megan had this.
- 1:32:33Very strange that they were not in this thing.
- 1:32:35It's just I know they're in the studio working on their new
- 1:32:37album right now. GAIL, who would you like to have
- 1:32:40seen added to this thing? Well, what about iron?
- 1:32:45Maiden. No, not even asked, according to
- 1:32:48Sharon. Never considered their brief is
- 1:32:51forever. She hates Rod Smallwood, she
- 1:32:53hates Spruce, and she hates them.
- 1:32:57I agree it would have made sense for them to be there, especially
- 1:32:59with no priest. You know a band I know that
- 1:33:03supported Ausentor Prong who has fans or, or I'm not a fan, but
- 1:33:11Slipknot. Very strange that Corey Taylor
- 1:33:15was not here in some way, shape or form.
- 1:33:17Very strange. And and Eloy is there.
- 1:33:20Their drummer was in the earlier in a little drum jam.
- 1:33:24So he was there. And Sid is there because
- 1:33:26obviously he got engaged to Kelly.
- 1:33:27What a fucking bonehead. On my dad.
- 1:33:30On your dad's biggest day, would you marry me?
- 1:33:32What a fuck face. I'm sorry.
- 1:33:35I've been saving that the whole day.
- 1:33:36Go ahead. No, I I'm sure he thought it was
- 1:33:39appropriate. You know he's.
- 1:33:40An idiot, men or women or they them as anybody, don't get
- 1:33:44engaged on people's birthdays, New Year's Eve or Valentine's
- 1:33:47Day. You're all fuck.
- 1:33:48Faced or at other people's weddings.
- 1:33:50Or at other people's weddings. What a fucking Dick weed.
- 1:33:52I'm going to give her the ring right after they say I do don't.
- 1:33:56You know who would have been a great band if all the members
- 1:33:58were still alive? Is Type O Negative?
- 1:34:01Yeah, of course. They have fucking killed it.
- 1:34:03Peter loved. Ozzy and Ozzy loved that.
- 1:34:06Would have been that the shit man.
- 1:34:10All right, P. Oh nice, Tom Bombadil, great
- 1:34:15screen name in the YouTube comments says maybe Phil
- 1:34:17Campbell and Mikey D play Hellraiser with Zach and Ozzy.
- 1:34:22I mean like that would have made fucking complete sense, but too
- 1:34:24much sense. Actually, I think Scorpions is
- 1:34:27also like on tour, you know, doing festivals and Phil, you
- 1:34:32know, he's got the bastard sons. But yeah, that's kind of strange
- 1:34:35that Lemmy also wasn't mentioned.
- 1:34:37Him and Ozzy were best friends. I think Suicide Solution was
- 1:34:40like for Bon Scott and, you know, in a lesser sense for for
- 1:34:45Lemmy being Lemmy ain't gone. But yeah, man, Corey Taylor is a
- 1:34:49head scratcher. And then I was going to say,
- 1:34:51Trivium is a band that is the same level.
- 1:34:54If you look at streaming numbers and popularity in terms of tour
- 1:34:58where they tour, Gojira, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Trivium
- 1:35:02is the next band on that level, maybe even more.
- 1:35:04Popular than some bands. Above Mastodon, actually, and
- 1:35:09they were not there at all. And that's not even Matt
- 1:35:12Matthew. Really strange.
- 1:35:14But, you know, maybe so much is too much.
- 1:35:16Or maybe they're not on Morello's radar if he was, you
- 1:35:20know, picking some. Of the yeah, I mean, I guess
- 1:35:22also not everybody can be invited.
- 1:35:26Yes, not everybody can be invited.
- 1:35:27Some people are. And, you know, let's just
- 1:35:29address the the Mötley Crüe thing that we've been talking
- 1:35:32about in the chat. Vince Neil should not ever tour
- 1:35:37or perform live again. He's horrible.
- 1:35:39He makes Axel look like Bruce Dickinson.
- 1:35:44Right on. But I think it would have been
- 1:35:46fun to have Tommy or Nikki in one of the Super groups because
- 1:35:50they were obviously completely influenced by Black Sabbath.
- 1:35:56Yeah, the Black Sabbath pre book.
- 1:35:58With Ozzy when they were all at their most insane.
- 1:36:01Yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 1:36:04No love for them, GAIL, I'm going to keep it with you.
- 1:36:07We're going to do 2 last questions and I'm going to start
- 1:36:10with this one. What other band could get this
- 1:36:16treatment? Like let's have one or two bands
- 1:36:19Max in a one minute answer. I wish you hadn't taken me first
- 1:36:24because I I know didn't we? We talked about in some of our
- 1:36:29pre chats Nirvana. Now as far as like the catalog
- 1:36:35and the legend and the influence is concerned, I think Nirvana
- 1:36:39would be a great pick definitely.
- 1:36:41Although wouldn't there be a pre a reformed Nirvana to play with
- 1:36:48Dave and Chris and. They've been offered money to do
- 1:36:51it, so yeah. Who would they have a bunch of
- 1:36:54different vocalists come and sing with them?
- 1:36:58I don't know. Really good question.
- 1:37:03I wish I could think of somebody else.
- 1:37:07I mean, you might say, you know, as far as like who's really big
- 1:37:10and huge and has a great legacy, Metallica, but you know, they're
- 1:37:18still around so. Right.
- 1:37:21I live in the Bay Area, so I'm rooting for that Metallica one.
- 1:37:24But on every thrash band and heavy metal band in the last 45
- 1:37:27years. And then Metallica plays, I'll
- 1:37:29be sick. All right, hold that thought,
- 1:37:32GAIL. Ken, what other band?
- 1:37:36That's a legacy band. I think you have to unmute
- 1:37:39yourself, buddy. There we go.
- 1:37:40No, muted, unmuted. I got it.
- 1:37:42OK, here we go. What legacy ban could get this
- 1:37:44treatment? You don't know.
- 1:37:50I don't really think off the top of my head who who is at that
- 1:37:58space at this point. You know, I mean, would a KISS 1
- 1:38:05be fun? Yeah.
- 1:38:06But KISS is never going to do that again.
- 1:38:08You know, so does something like this happened for Kiss and then
- 1:38:13the end result at the final show is the avatars?
- 1:38:18I mean, that would be interesting.
- 1:38:22But as far as Legacy a Misfits 1, they're still doing it.
- 1:38:30I can't really think of anybody right off the top of my head.
- 1:38:34You know, Nirvana is a good choice like GAIL mentioned, but
- 1:38:40don't seem to want. I don't know, I'm kind of
- 1:38:46perplexed on that. You know, there, there are not a
- 1:38:49lot of legendary things that are closing up.
- 1:38:54You know, Maiden's still going, Priest is still going, Metallica
- 1:38:57is still going, Slipknot's still going.
- 1:39:00These are names that you would say maybe would be the choice,
- 1:39:03but they're all still active and they don't look like they're
- 1:39:06slowing down anytime soon. Knock wood.
- 1:39:10Yeah, You know, I'll just. I think in 10 years the
- 1:39:12landscape is going to be radically different.
- 1:39:14Yes, but I'll put this as a, I'll put this as a liner note
- 1:39:18kind of when when I was coming back from priest last year with
- 1:39:23a friend of mine and some other cats in the in the car, somebody
- 1:39:28was complaining about the setlist.
- 1:39:29They didn't like everything that was in the setlist.
- 1:39:32And I had to point out that wasn't it extraordinary to be in
- 1:39:38our 50s and seeing a band that we used to watch as teenagers?
- 1:39:46And I said, you know, that's the I, that is where the
- 1:39:49appreciation should be. And the fact that they're still
- 1:39:52doing stuff like this is just beyond amazing.
- 1:39:55So, but all of those bands are still doing it.
- 1:39:57And I agree with you, 10 more years, it's going to be a
- 1:39:59different conversation, but that will have to be on a podcast of
- 1:40:03a different nature cause none of us will be doing this anymore.
- 1:40:06I. Will I'm not going nowhere.
- 1:40:09I will, buddy. Joan Jetter, lead afford for
- 1:40:13Jamie Maroney on YouTube. Yes, for Nirvana.
- 1:40:16They've talked about Joan, about Joan Jett.
- 1:40:18Yeah. Lita also could have been part
- 1:40:19of this, right. close your eyes forever would have been a nice
- 1:40:21thing. Don Don Doc and Don Delamont.
- 1:40:25Who, who, who should have been on this thing that wasn't you?
- 1:40:34Mean band wise. Or like any artist or band, just
- 1:40:37quickly. Oh my God, there was.
- 1:40:39I mean, actually I made I made a list real quick.
- 1:40:41Or who could or who could get? Who could get Because we we are
- 1:40:46you got kind of skipped on that question, but who could get
- 1:40:48their own version of this? Another band?
- 1:40:51Who do you think is good enough to get another one of these?
- 1:40:55So kind of like what Ken said, I feel like to be honest, it's
- 1:40:58it's ironic that some of the greats are still active, but
- 1:41:02thinking down the road when it's time to clock out and retire.
- 1:41:07I'm thinking Maiden right off the top of my head.
- 1:41:11I mean, that is a band that is in a sense.
- 1:41:14They wrap everything up within themselves.
- 1:41:17Like you've never seen someone come out on stage and jam with
- 1:41:21Iron Maiden or like guest without, you know what I mean?
- 1:41:24Like so like would. They be into it.
- 1:41:26I don't know that Bruce would be into it.
- 1:41:28I think his ego is too big, I think, and it'll just make ionic
- 1:41:32gears look bad because he's not really playing as we know.
- 1:41:34He's not plugged in so. I.
- 1:41:36Think he's doing a pretty much bored fucking guy thing with his
- 1:41:40guitar and he's not really a guitar player anymore.
- 1:41:42I'm a Yannick Nut swinger, but that's a whole other story.
- 1:41:46But yeah, I think Maiden would be a band that would get it.
- 1:41:50I was also just, I was trying to think about as you guys were
- 1:41:53talking more about it and I think that because so many
- 1:41:57iconic bands are still going at it, I would have to say Priest.
- 1:42:01I could see Priest getting this kind of treatment also, but on
- 1:42:07this level of the Sabbath thing. I think Maiden's probably the
- 1:42:10only band that could that could have a show of that magnitude
- 1:42:16with all those people because of how they are.
- 1:42:18Priests probably could do it depending on who was going to be
- 1:42:22there. But I think Maiden, like hands
- 1:42:25down, and I would love to see it because as much as I love Bruce,
- 1:42:28I want him to hang around, but I just want to see who would show
- 1:42:31up to that show. Right.
- 1:42:32Or everybody that showed up today probably or whatever,
- 1:42:35Saturday. Pete, Peter, what do you think?
- 1:42:39Who forget this treatment? So I have three kind of like I
- 1:42:45was thinking about like, how do you do this?
- 1:42:48I have to say that this is a really special thing.
- 1:42:51And I think that I like Sabbath is really unique in this
- 1:42:56approach because they're so, I mean, they are like the
- 1:43:00cornerstone. So I think it'll never be quite
- 1:43:03the same. If I was in my fan fantasy
- 1:43:07thing, I think doing in Toronto, you have Rush and you figure out
- 1:43:13what you're doing with the drummer situation.
- 1:43:15But I bet that that would be a lot bigger event than people
- 1:43:19would realize, especially if you do it in Canada and you figure
- 1:43:24out a few guest drummers for Rush to play.
- 1:43:27And I would bet a ton of great bands and ours who want to be a
- 1:43:30part of that. Although it would have to be a
- 1:43:32little different because obviously, you know, Pert's not
- 1:43:35with us anymore. So I thought that that would be
- 1:43:36kind of neat. In the states the only bands I
- 1:43:40can think of would be Kiss and Aerosmith.
- 1:43:42But because Aerosmith is kind of done but we can see by Stevens
- 1:43:46performance that we they could do probably 3 songs or 4 songs
- 1:43:51and sound fantastic. Kiss would be a weird thing
- 1:43:54because Paul's voice is pretty shot, although, you know, if
- 1:43:58they figure out something clever, I don't know, maybe
- 1:44:01he'll be able to hold on for a couple tunes to Paul songs to
- 1:44:05Gene songs. I think they might be able to do
- 1:44:07it. But I you know, and that would
- 1:44:09definitely be really cool. But again, it'd be a different
- 1:44:12vibe. And I'm I'm with Don and I think
- 1:44:15all of us were talking about like Maiden.
- 1:44:17I think Maiden would be terrific.
- 1:44:18I still think that Maiden's got a lot of gas though, in a, in a
- 1:44:21cool, weird way, I think that we're seeing like in Maiden, I
- 1:44:26think we're seeing something very different, kind of like a
- 1:44:29maiden's like the LeBron of metal.
- 1:44:32Like they're, they're technically shouldn't be as good
- 1:44:35as they are alive for for their ages right now, but they're
- 1:44:40like, they're defying all of it in a really cool way.
- 1:44:43So I kind of enjoy like, like what Don was saying about, you
- 1:44:47know, wanting to see Bruce continue.
- 1:44:49I mean, I haven't been as much of a fan of the last couple of
- 1:44:52Maiden records. I thought they were OK, but I
- 1:44:55still feel like there's a lot of gas in the tank.
- 1:44:57I still think there's like a killer record left in that
- 1:45:00group. But yeah, it would be, it would
- 1:45:03be different. All of them would have different
- 1:45:04energy. I don't think as much as I love
- 1:45:06Priests, I don't think Priests has the same kind of pulling
- 1:45:11international power as some of the other bands.
- 1:45:14I think if they did it in an interesting way, maybe kind of a
- 1:45:17smallish or slightly smaller version of to what Sabbath did,
- 1:45:22they could pull it off to, but it would be a different kind of
- 1:45:25crowd. I think you get a lot of the the
- 1:45:27Sabbath people over there, but I think it would be different.
- 1:45:30I think if you're talking about like internationally, I think
- 1:45:33Maiden in a few years would be great.
- 1:45:35I love the idea of Nirvana because it's such a such a cool
- 1:45:39thing. Except, you know, I'll just be
- 1:45:41honest. I don't know.
- 1:45:42I think a lot of the artists that would be on the bill I
- 1:45:44wouldn't be as crazy about to be honestly, especially a lot of
- 1:45:48the the younger artists. I don't know, I think like a lot
- 1:45:51of the ones that grab the curve thing.
- 1:45:53I don't know if I'd be as excited about.
- 1:45:56I'd be excited about obviously their contemporaries and some of
- 1:45:59the mid bands at right after. But I think there was a lot of,
- 1:46:02dare I say, not as interesting, like pop punk, Kitty punk stuff
- 1:46:07that it was influenced by Nirvana that I don't think would
- 1:46:10hit me as hard. And I think a lot of those bands
- 1:46:12aren't around anymore. I think, I think there's a whole
- 1:46:16interesting separate conversation about Nirvana to be
- 1:46:18had. And actually I think the band
- 1:46:20that would be the band, they did it already.
- 1:46:22It was no effects on their farewell tour.
- 1:46:24That's the band that actually influenced all the newer punk
- 1:46:27bands, not Nirvana. Nirvana was lumped into punk.
- 1:46:30They were not exclusively punk. But I would just jump in and say
- 1:46:33Van Halen would have been my pick to have this kind of
- 1:46:36treatment. And now with Alex kind of
- 1:46:38selling off all his drums and physically probably been
- 1:46:40incapacitated from playing drums ever again, I don't want to see
- 1:46:44a Van Halen concert without at least Alex Van Halen.
- 1:46:46So that's that. Yeah, I'm going to keep.
- 1:46:49Yeah, I'm going to keep it with you for the We're going to do
- 1:46:51the last question. I have decided to forgo the
- 1:46:54legacy question because we know what it is already.
- 1:46:56We all know it's on, you know, beyond reproach.
- 1:47:00Are they done? Is Ozzy going to put out new
- 1:47:03music? Is Sabbath going to do a new
- 1:47:05album? Will we see them again on a
- 1:47:07stage somewhere? Or is this it?
- 1:47:09This was wildly successful. Raise a lot of money for
- 1:47:12charity. 5 million plus people watch this thing just in 30
- 1:47:16seconds or less. Are they done?
- 1:47:17Is this it? Is there more?
- 1:47:19What do you think? I, I, I dare I say I really hope
- 1:47:24so, not because it's because I love Ozzy and their and their
- 1:47:28legacy. And I think this was an
- 1:47:30exclamation point and then some. And I think it would be amazing
- 1:47:35them to end off here. I did get nervous by seeing
- 1:47:38Andrew Watt on that stage playing guitar who produced the
- 1:47:42last few Aussie albums. So I don't know, maybe that was
- 1:47:45kind of a sign of possibly some, some sort of last project.
- 1:47:49But I I hope it's done only because I think it's it would
- 1:47:53just be a glorious way to end. All right.
- 1:47:56Very nicely done, done. De Lamont.
- 1:47:59What do you think? Are they done done or are they
- 1:48:02not done done? As far as Ozzy goes, I hope he's
- 1:48:05done. I don't think I've I haven't
- 1:48:07liked a record he honestly that he's put out since probably no
- 1:48:12more tears, I'd have to say. And even before then, I thought
- 1:48:15No rest for the Wicked was his last truly great record.
- 1:48:20I kind of hope he's done like let this be it.
- 1:48:22Let let us have this memory that I don't want to hear Ozzy, you
- 1:48:26know, using pitch shifters on his voice to get him to sing in
- 1:48:30a way, you know, he can't do it. So I don't know.
- 1:48:32I'm kind of done with that. Sabbath, though, on the other
- 1:48:35hand, I'd love to see Sabbath revisit.
- 1:48:37I'd love to see Iommi and Tony Martin do something together.
- 1:48:41I think that that would be incredible.
- 1:48:43It wouldn't be big scale, obviously, but you know, it
- 1:48:47would be kind of cool to see the members of Sabbath somehow
- 1:48:52revisit some of this past lineups to give those lineups,
- 1:48:57you know, credit where credit's due.
- 1:48:59And I do want to drop. One more thing that I still
- 1:49:01think it is absolutely insane and I kind of won't forgive
- 1:49:04Sharon for this ever, is that Bob Daisley was completely
- 1:49:07written out of the picture. Like he was a huge part of Ozzy
- 1:49:14and Co writing some of the greatest songs that Ozzy put
- 1:49:18out. And he is for life, been treated
- 1:49:23like dog shit by them and I, and this was their chance to at
- 1:49:26least kind of do a classy thing. And they didn't even mention
- 1:49:30him, so I thought that was sad. So, you know, props to Bob
- 1:49:33Daisley. Right on, Don, before I go to
- 1:49:37Ken, I do want to jump into the comments.
- 1:49:39Jamie said Led Zeppelin and I had said privately, I think the
- 1:49:42moment has passed for Jimmy and Robert to kind of come back in
- 1:49:46and do another one of those. But I did want to acknowledge
- 1:49:49your comment. Jamie, thank you for being in
- 1:49:50the chat this entire time. Ken Pierce, are they done?
- 1:49:54Will there be more? What do you think?
- 1:49:57I miss having the beard to do the scrutiny things.
- 1:50:02Yes, I, I, I think that that is the last time we'll see a proper
- 1:50:08Black Sabbath live. Ozzy did maintain that he was
- 1:50:14still gonna try to record music. Will it be a full album?
- 1:50:18I don't think so. I don't can.
- 1:50:21I think he's, I hate to say it, I think he's a lot worse off
- 1:50:25than he seems. Or that they say, you know, this
- 1:50:29is not an easy, you know, maybe they're.
- 1:50:36Single or. Three with Andrew and they put
- 1:50:39something else out as singles only.
- 1:50:42We will never see him on the stage again unless he comes out
- 1:50:46to accept an award of some kind. But Sabbath I also think are are
- 1:50:52done in this kind of thing because as much as everybody in
- 1:50:56the chat was talking about Tony Martin, a a combination of them
- 1:51:03and Tony Martin would not fill a garden or a theater and it'll
- 1:51:11fill smaller things because that stuff is not as known.
- 1:51:16Unless you were an absolute Sabbath, Die Hard followed them
- 1:51:19through absolutely everything that they ever released and had
- 1:51:23your favorites along the line. I mean, I only can name 3 or 4
- 1:51:27songs by Tony Martin and I liked what he did with them.
- 1:51:31You know, Gillen's not going to do anything with them.
- 1:51:33He's got purple and he doesn't need to do anything Sabbath
- 1:51:36because purple still sells out arenas.
- 1:51:39So, but I, I think really for the most part it's done.
- 1:51:43This was an amazing send off and done well.
- 1:51:46And I know that's more than 30 seconds.
- 1:51:48I'm sorry. That's OK, I do believe Tony's
- 1:51:50next project is going to be to remaster a box set version of
- 1:51:55Born Again. Keithy will rejoice.
- 1:51:57GAIL. Done, not done.
- 1:52:00Bullshit. Every band stays, I'm retiring
- 1:52:02farewell tour and then they come back.
- 1:52:04What do you think? I think Ozzy's done because
- 1:52:06Ozzy's obviously very ill and as Peter said, why not go out on
- 1:52:12top Now, will he still record music?
- 1:52:16I think no, But if he could put out something that his fans
- 1:52:22would like, sure, but I think he's wrapped it up pretty much.
- 1:52:28Is Sabbath done? I think that Geezer and Tony
- 1:52:31could still do anything they want.
- 1:52:34I think Bill has some health issues, but I don't know if
- 1:52:40would they come together as an entity with a different singer.
- 1:52:44Maybe that's all I'll say. Maybe.
- 1:52:49It's just a super interesting mysterious GAIL.
- 1:52:52I love mysterious GAIL. I'm just going to jump in here
- 1:52:54for a second and just say for a last licks, this has been really
- 1:52:57wonderful. Thanks everybody for jumping in
- 1:52:59the chat and being a part of this and watching this live
- 1:53:02stream. We're going to do more of these
- 1:53:03roundtables. I keep swearing we'll do one a
- 1:53:05couple of year. We might be back in the fall as
- 1:53:08things develop. I'm just really grateful to be
- 1:53:11part of this incredible community who've grown up and
- 1:53:13since I was a little toddler listening to Black Sabbath and
- 1:53:16hearing that's original first squeal of War pigs on the base
- 1:53:21and just knowing that I had to someday play bass and it really
- 1:53:24consumed my whole brain in a way.
- 1:53:26I still haven't quite worked out in therapy.
- 1:53:29But to the gang being here, I really relish and cherish you
- 1:53:33all. This has been really marvelous.
- 1:53:34Please, everybody following if you've come here through Ghost
- 1:53:37cultman.com, check out Peter's music, check out Don's podcast
- 1:53:41website and music. Check out Ken's websites and

- 1:53:50This has been a great honor and hail Black Sabbath, hail Iommi,
- 1:53:54hail Ozzy, and take care of yourselves out there.
- 1:53:57Thanks everybody. Thanks everybody.
- 1:53:59Thanks guys. Bye.
- 1:54:01Hail Taylor Swift. Thanks everyone.
- 1:54:05Death to false medal. That's better.
- 1:54:10By the way, I was the only one with the Sabbath strong and I'm
- 1:54:12very sad. Braggart.
- 1:54:16I have a classic. It's in storage.
- 1:54:20I have a Sabbath on like, oh, nice.
- 1:54:22Oh, look at you. All right then.
- 1:54:23Thanks, everybody. Peace.
- 1:54:25Thank y'all. Thanks love y'all.
