- 0:50Radio Detectives. Well, I did want to explain why this particular recording's being
- 0:57done in twenty nineteen, and it's for our New Year's week where I am
- 1:06taking a break from recording, and all the other episodes being run are just
- 1:12previously a podcast episodes. The reason we're doing this one here today with me
- 1:23actually recording is I downloaded the episode and I noticed that it was only twenty
- 1:30nine minutes long, and I thought, that doesn't leave a whole lot of
- 1:36time for commentary on this series. And there wasn't any. There was like
- 1:40a little snippet of theme music and that was all. So yeah, apparently
- 1:47this went out without any commentary on it, and we know, for whatever
- 1:52reason, hadn't corrected it. Well, I particularly enjoyed this episode, so
- 1:57I decided I wanted to go ahead and reward some commentary for it. But
- 2:00I'm recording it before the vacation week, you know, so I'm not defeating
- 2:06my purpose or you know, really going to work all like extremes on this.
- 2:10So we're going to bring you an episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe.
- 2:15The original air date is December the twenty sixth of nineteen forty eight,
- 2:21and the title is The Old Acquaintance. When it started a girl's wedding in
- 2:27New Year's Eve, We're only six hours away, and I didn't think the
- 2:29bride to be would make out of one of them. But that was before
- 2:31I ran up against the slut machine operator, the escaped convict, and above
- 2:36all, the Old Acquaintance. From the pen of Raymond Chandler. I'm spending,
- 2:40author of crime fiction comes his most famous character as CBS presents The Adventures
- 2:46of Philip Marlowe, and now with Gerald starred as Philip Marlowe, we bring
- 3:01you tonight's exciting story, The Old Acquaintance. At six o'clock in the last
- 3:20evening of the year, I was sitting with my feet up on my office
- 3:23desk, thinking of impossible New Year's resolutions and what the girl on my Butcher's
- 3:27nineteen forty nine calendar wouldow would not be wearing. But at that pleasant point,
- 3:30there was a soft, almost apologetic knock on my office door. I
- 3:35said, come in, and saw a quiet man in quiet clothes who extended
- 3:38a quiet hand. He introduced himself as Paul Riker, a Beverly Hills insurance
- 3:44broken But the tremor in his voice said, very worried client, which I
- 3:47knew Year's Eve was something I could do without. Mister Marlowe, You've got
- 3:52to find Nancy Marshall for me, just for a springboard. Mister Riker,
- 3:54who is Nancy Marshall. She's my fiance that we were to be married at
- 3:59my place in Beverly Hills tonight a New Year's e Yes, you see,
- 4:01it was at the New Year's Eve party a year ago that we met for
- 4:03the first time. When's your last hear from her? Two hours ago she
- 4:08called and said that she was in terrible troubled that nobody, especially the police,
- 4:12could help her, that well, that the wedding was off. I
- 4:15see, you're sure it's not just a matter off. You're being left at
- 4:16the order another man. Oh no, no, I'm certain that's not it.
- 4:21Now, Please, mister Mallow, will you help me, mister Riker.
- 4:25You New Year's Eve means wedding bells, but to me it's something else,
- 4:28specifically a cozy little apartment. I will show boulevard where a very nice
- 4:31girl and a couple of chilled bottles of sham. Oh, what is it,
- 4:35miss mallow? What's wrong? Somebody outside right could get away with my
- 4:39dog quick whether through those shots through the frost to blast my office door.
- 4:46Wasn't interested in checking up on his marksmanship, because by the time I got
- 4:48to my feet, he was taking the stairs of the street. When I
- 4:50got outside, I was just in time to see him pile into a pickup
- 4:54truck and raw off. The best I could do was get a face full
- 4:58of exhaust fumes and the last three numbers on his life Easton's plate, which
- 5:00read seven to one one. When I got back to a Riker and the
- 5:03glass on my office floor, I found the potential groom whiter, shakeier,
- 5:08and less quiet than at our first meeting. Fallow, did you get a
- 5:11Do you know who it was? I don't. Now relax a minute,
- 5:14Riker and think who could possibly object to you and Nancy getting married? But
- 5:16that's just stick. This is nobody I know of mister Marlow, and I'm
- 5:19positive that the same is true of Nancy. All right, now tell me
- 5:23where does Nancy live in fourteen twenty eight North Havenhurst Drive at number twelve.
- 5:27But I've already been there and she's gone. Were you inside? No?
- 5:30No, the door was locked. But mister Mollow, I thought you had
- 5:33specific plans for this evening. I do. But the way things stack up
- 5:36right now, they've got a better chance of keeping the Nancy Marshall. Now
- 5:41look, go back to your place in Beverly Hill, stay away from frosted
- 5:43glass windows, and will you hear from me? We're real lucky, mister
- 5:46Riker. It's still might turn out to be a happy New Year. When
- 5:56Ryker left the office, I call lieutenanty Barrow at police headquarters. After being
- 6:00told that it would take at least a half hour to get my kind of
- 6:02lead out of the seven eleven I had on a pickup truck's license, I
- 6:05headed for Nancy's villa, North Havenhurst, where it took me ten minutes to
- 6:10outsmart the catch on the back door inside except for a carelessly overturned box of
- 6:15old snapshots, which meant nothing to me. With a lot of half open
- 6:18drawers and closets. I was no place, and in the kitchen, where
- 6:21there was a full cup of cold coffee next to an open newspaper, a
- 6:26setup was almost the same. Not quite, because on the front page of
- 6:30the paper there was a banner story complete with pictures that shouted the news of
- 6:33three men who had broken out of the state penitentiary that morning, and one
- 6:38of them, a man named Steve Doyle, had a face that I'd seen
- 6:42only minutes ago, and one of the snapshots in the overturned box. I
- 6:49grabbed the paper and started back to check with the snapshot once again for good
- 6:51measure. But the second I stepped into the living room, I stopped.
- 6:57Hello, I don't believe I know you. Oh. The voice matched the
- 7:02lady perfectly. She was tall, beautiful, and at about thirty, wearing
- 7:09a beige metallic wool jersey that covered more curves than a ride on a roller
- 7:13coaster. But the large monogram day on a purse meant that this was not
- 7:16the woman who would plan to marry Paul Rocker. I said, I don't
- 7:19believe I know you. The name is Arthur Murray. You're late for your
- 7:24rumble, lesson, Oh, never mind. The joke's bright boy, it's
- 7:27a waste of your time, aunt mine. All right, then we'll play
- 7:30it very straight. The name is Philip Marlow. I'm a private detective and
- 7:32I'm working for a very worried man. Now you what's your connection with Nancy
- 7:36Marshall. I've just, shall we say, an old acquaintance. That's all
- 7:41not enough, I'll prime the pump some more. I was hired to find
- 7:45Nancy, who seems to be in a lot of trouble, and coincidentally in
- 7:47trouble on the same day that Steve Doyle breaks out of stir Now once more,
- 7:51exactly where do you fit in? I don't think i'll tell you,
- 7:55mister Marlow, if you don't mind, well, I oh, pearl handled
- 7:59eh a very sheep but deadly. I'll get in that closet there, Marlo.
- 8:03Go on, all right, all right, just so we don't go
- 8:05through the same routine when we meet again, and we will. Who are
- 8:07you? You don't listen very carefully, Marlo. I've already told you that
- 8:11I'm an old acquaintance. It's the season for them, remember, Now,
- 8:16get in there and shut up. Nancy Marshall's villow was postwar construction at its
- 8:28worst, closets included. So I didn't stay tucked away with the mothballs any
- 8:31longer than it takes to say old acquaintance. In the minute i'd kicked my
- 8:35way out, I went right for the telephone and my only one hundred percent
- 8:37bona fide lead the number seven eleven. This Lieutenant ybar malloy Barra anything for
- 8:50me on that license number? Oh yeah, if you're sure it was a
- 8:52pickup tracking, the chances are pretty good at it either belongs to a party
- 8:56name Maurice J Called at four O nine South Maine or one Jerome Grafts thirty
- 9:01two twenty one and a half Melrose Avenue. Jack, what's up Phil?
- 9:05Anything I might be interested in? It depends. Have you here of a
- 9:07guy named Steve Doyle, one of that gang that broke out this morning the
- 9:11very same matter of fact, he's probably driving that pickup truck right now,
- 9:15But look he borret. I think I know what I'm doing, So how
- 9:16about letting me run this end of it until I get stuck. Well,
- 9:20there's a girl named Nancy Marshall mixed up in this and a delay at this
- 9:22time I cost her life. All right, I'll stay clear at Phil for
- 9:26a while. Good. We just saw you don't get too Carelet's remember Doyle
- 9:30got out of jail this morning the hard way. He killed two guards.
- 9:33Oh fine, good by Marlo. I got the four owner in South Maine.
- 9:46I knew that my first choice had to be wrong because Maurice J.
- 9:50Cal It turned out to be a bankrupt junkman and his pickup truck, which
- 9:52was loaded with everything including the kitchen sink, had three flat tires and hadn't
- 9:56moved in a week. So if the numerals seven to eleven were going to
- 10:00live out to their reputation, Jerome Graf had to be my man, and
- 10:05that made the time to be careful. No. Thirty two, twenty one
- 10:13and a half. Melrose was a tired cottage set back about fifty weed covered
- 10:18feet from the sidewalk and from the rusted signs. Jerry Graff, mechanic dangling
- 10:22at a crazy angle from a weather beaten beam over the front door. I
- 10:26gathered that the place double is both mister Graff's living quarters and shop, and
- 10:30I didn't see any truck out front, so I decided to try the alley
- 10:33in the rear before I knocked down any door. It was then that I
- 10:35noticed for the first time that I was being watched by a short man with
- 10:39a long face, who was slouched against the nearby a tree like a marionette
- 10:43with no strings attached. If you're lost, missed up, maybe I can
- 10:50help you. Maybe I was looking for a pickup truck. Scene went around
- 10:54a pickup truck. Now I wonder what that could be. Well, it's
- 10:58a small dealt half a ton and oh I get it. Okay, here
- 11:03here's five. Now my question. Jerry Graf owns a pickup truck. But
- 11:07it ain't here. It's been out since dark, but Jerry's in. He's
- 11:11working late tonight, working at what came on? You got your five talk?
- 11:16Okay, it ain't no secret. Jerry's a nice maid for one armed
- 11:20bandits slot machines? Is that his ragon? Yeah, he used to be
- 11:24a big boy with him too, but times have changed. No, he
- 11:28just works on him for other guys. What of the guys, Oh,
- 11:31mister, I wouldn't answer that for even another five. I wouldn't stay in
- 11:35business very long if I did. But I'll tell you one thing for free,
- 11:39in case you're gonna visit Jerry. Watch out for him. He's a
- 11:45very nasty man. Thanks for I can take care of myself, bust In,
- 12:01What do you want information? Why's your pickup truck? Grab? Somebody
- 12:05stole it, but he didn't leave his card? Why what are you?
- 12:09A prova dick? That's right, but one that works close to the law.
- 12:11So why don't we call the boys in blue and tell him all about
- 12:13it the cops. No, and wait a minute, I don't like the
- 12:16law pattern around here. Come on in, I'll tell you what you want
- 12:18to know. Let's not skip any of the details. Huh Like, For
- 12:22example, the name's Steve Doyle and oil, I don't know. Well,
- 12:26okay, fully you win. The story goes something like this. I want
- 12:31to try again. Maybe a monkey rental condition you don't throw straight in your
- 12:35talk? Come on, say we played for the wall, Come on talk,
- 12:39come on, come on? Wait? All right enough, so far
- 12:46I know a girl named Nancy Marshall's in some kind of trouble because Steve Doyle
- 12:48broke out of the pen this morning. Now you felling a blank? Sure?
- 12:52Sure? Why not? Oh Steve Doyle he used to be crazy about
- 12:56Nancy, but she didn't go for him. Then about a year ago,
- 12:58a little or maybe Steve got picked up for knocking over a grocery store.
- 13:03He figured he was caught because Nancy tipped a lot to get him out of
- 13:05her hair. Now he's out to get Nancy for revengers. That is,
- 13:07That's it, and anyone who's close to it gets the same treatment of Shemy
- 13:11I tell me was Doyle here is either one who's driving a pickup truck.
- 13:15Yeah, but it wasn't my idea. He shoved a gun in my face,
- 13:16said we were old friends and asked for the keys. You know where
- 13:20he is now? No, but if I did, I'd keep it to
- 13:22myself. Doyle's full of hate, brother, you can count on that.
- 13:26Now, What do you say about Claire? And out of here? Just
- 13:28as soon as I find out one more thing. Now, there's another girl
- 13:31mixed up in this. She's a brunette with a lot of curves. In
- 13:33the initial, A calls herself an old acquaintance of Nancy's. Any idea who
- 13:35she are? Not? The slider? I lia graph and if I had
- 13:37time, I'd beat the truth. How do you haven't believed me? Because
- 13:39if you don't hustle, mister. When you do catch up with Nancy Marshall,
- 13:43you're going to catch up with a corpse. Nothing more. I got
- 13:52outside, two things stood out in my mind like a pair of Cleat's cornegie
- 13:54hall. First, my client's fiance was not the most innocent dame in Greater
- 14:00Los Angeles. And second, I wasn't going to get any place until I
- 14:03could locate the old acquaintance. But then, just as I started for my
- 14:07car, the slout who had sold me the dirty thumbnail sketch on Jerry Graft
- 14:11came running toward me. Hey, missed it? Did everything work out all
- 14:16right? I was called away on some other business or I'd have been here
- 14:20waiting waiting for what. Well, you know. In my game, I
- 14:24now and again give a guy a little more dope than he boggin for,
- 14:28and in that case I sometimes end up with a bonus, so to speak.
- 14:33Right now, we're about even. But if you can tell me anything
- 14:35about a beautiful brunette whose first name starts with an A, I'll give you
- 14:39a bonus. It'll keep you in bearing pretzels from now until the fourth of
- 14:41July. Name that begins with an A. Yeah, Hey, she visited
- 14:46with graph this morning. Maybe, yeah, it's possible. Come on,
- 14:50thank thank god. She's kind of tall, dresses like a million bucks.
- 14:56That's right now. What's her name? Yeah? Look alla bill a name?
- 15:01What is it? It's yeah, I got it? Adrian Star thirteen
- 15:07twelve, lookout Mountain Road. How do you know that? It was on
- 15:09the registration card? In Hakka? I took a peek. Why don't you
- 15:16trouble at grass? I'll take my twenty goodbye. I beat it up the
- 15:24walk the grass, and when I got inside, I found exactly what I
- 15:26expected, doubled up on the floor in the middle of a lot of oily
- 15:30machine parts, and still holding his stomach with both hands. It was your
- 15:33own grab, a very dead man. I started for a telephone to call
- 15:39lieutenanty Barrow, but then I noticed something small and gold dyeing a few feet
- 15:45away from the body. When I picked it up, I saw it was
- 15:48an ornamental buckle, the kind little lady might wear on a coat. So
- 15:52I decided to skip lieutenanty bar Up at the time, being called my client
- 15:54instead. Hello, this is Marlow Riker. Oh yes, Mallow, what
- 16:03if you found out quite a bit? First? I've got to know one
- 16:06thing. Does Nancy Marshall have a gold belt buckle? Gold belt buckle?
- 16:11Well, yes she does on her black coat. But what about it,
- 16:15marlow What does it mean? I'm not sure, mister Riker, but it
- 16:18may mean that Nancy Marshall just killed a man in just a moment. We
- 16:33will return to the second act of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, but first,
- 16:37by this time, a week from tonight, Jack Benny will have made
- 16:41his first broadcast exclusively on the CBS Network. Starting next Sunday, you'll find
- 16:45Jack here with Mary Livingston, Phil Harris Rochester, Dennis Day, Don Wilson,

- 16:53evening delight for millions of Americans. Just for fun, that Jack Benny of
- 17:00fun. Make a New Year's resolution to hear the Jack Benny Show every Sunday,
- 17:03starting a week from tonight, January second, over these same CBS Network
- 17:08stations, and now with our star Gerald Bohr, we returned to the second
- 17:14act of Philip Marlowe and tonight's story the Old Acquaintance. When I told Paul
- 17:26Riker that the chances were good, that is brid to be. It just
- 17:29knocked off a slot machine operator. My client reacted like I kicked him in
- 17:33the stomach. When he caught his breath again, he started telling me I
- 17:36was wrong and didn't stop until I hung up on him. Ixt thing on
- 17:38the agenda as I call the lieutenanty Bara, Lieutenant Hollow again, Lieutenant Oh,
- 17:52did you find the owner of that pickup truck? Phil? Yeah,
- 17:53I founded me, Bor, I'm calling from his shop now. I had
- 17:56a talk with the guy. It was Jerry Grab. What do you mean
- 18:00was Jerry Grab? Somebody came in here and shut him just after I left.
- 18:03He's dead. He knew Steve Doyle, all right, but I'm pretty
- 18:06sure Doyle didn't kill me. Bara, Oh, that who did? Any
- 18:08idea? Mollo Well looks very much like my client's fiance, saint Nancy Marshall.
- 18:14I still don't know where she is, how it all fits together,
- 18:17but look, I got a lead on an old acquaintance of Nancy's named Adrian
- 18:19Starr. She lives up on Lookout Martin Road. If you don't hear from
- 18:23me and saying how you might check number thirteen twelve, that's my next stop.
- 18:26Okay, just be sure it's not your last stop. I drove up
- 18:37Laura Canyon to look out mountain. The only sign of life was a young
- 18:41couple park where they could look down in the city lights if they wanted to.
- 18:45I backed into a bushy driveway across Adrian Star's bungalow and stopped. Was
- 18:51small, modern and looked deserted, except for one dim light upstairs. I
- 18:56was about to get out and verify that when a pair of headlights flashed down
- 18:59the road. The yellow convertible swept to a halt in front of the place.
- 19:03It was Adrian Star who got out. She started up the wall toward
- 19:06our front door, stopped suddenly, and then ran back to a car and
- 19:10drove off again. I kept the yellow convertible in sight when it turned on
- 19:14Havenhurst and stopped in front of Nancy Marshall's villa. I pulled up in time
- 19:18to see Adrian step inside and close the door, so I followed her,
- 19:26Marlow, what do you want? I want to know what Jerry Graft means
- 19:30to you, Adrian. I don't know any Jerry Grafts or what it means.
- 19:33No, come on, stop it. You went down away shop to
- 19:36see him this morning. I thought you might like to know that he's dead.
- 19:40M m. My cops are hungry for anybody who so much as knew
- 19:44his name. Maybe I better come inside and talk it over, don't you
- 19:47think? Yeah? Maybe better just a minute? Thanks, Hey, it's
- 19:56dark. Why don't you turn on more life? This is I like it
- 19:57this way, okay, But honey, if you've still got that pearl handled
- 20:02pop gun of yours, let's leave it out of the conversation and let's make
- 20:06it straight. Why did you drop in on graphs this morning? Because I
- 20:07knew the sooner or later Steve Doyle would hit there. I had to know
- 20:11if Stephen tended to leave town or was still determined to get us crazy revenge
- 20:14and all. Fnancy Marshall, huh, you know you're sticking your neck out
- 20:18quite a ways, just for old time's sake, Baby, Steve Doyle is
- 20:22a pretty tricky guy to mixed with at this point. Oh, Steve Steve
- 20:27Doyle, that's right, Marlow, Private detective, sit down over there,
- 20:33Private detective, keep your hands out of your pockets. I don't like you
- 20:36because you're half cop, but play it smart. You will get hurt.
- 20:40Well, Adan like hold home week h it's been a long time, Steve.
- 20:45Yeah, yeah, it sure has. Where's she, Adriana, Where's
- 20:48Nancy? I don't know, Steve, you're lying to me. This is
- 20:51her place. You got him with a key, even on a sea graph.
- 20:55You know where she is? All right, So till me and tell
- 20:57me, Dee listen, forget it, forget about Nancy. This revenge will
- 21:02only get you in the guest chamber. Please let's get away. We can
- 21:04still make it across the border. Please take me with you. I love
- 21:07you, Steve, just like I always have, even when you throw me
- 21:11over. Just tell me what Nancy is. Come on, Adrian, stop
- 21:18it, all right? So I told you to behave. I've been through
- 21:27a lot, and I'm tired and I'm running out of time. You're getting
- 21:29in my hair, and that's bad. I won't shoot him. I can't
- 21:33afford the noise. I can give him something justice, good cool girl,
- 21:40Now, Adrian, try again? Where's Nance? I couldn't remember where I
- 22:03was, how long I've been lying there? But gradually I got the crazy
- 22:08idea that I was being rubbed by a very unhappy crook. Because I was
- 22:14sure that somebody was crying and going through my pockets at the same time.
- 22:18Oh, I tried to open my eyes. All I could see was a
- 22:22little gold buckle dance back and forth in front of me, But it finally
- 22:26disappeared all together. I rolled over and to hold myself up onto my knees,
- 22:33and then it all came rushing back to me. I had been a
- 22:36Nancy Marshall's fellow with Steve Doyle and Adan Star, and they were gone now,
- 22:41and I was like arm. I heard a car start outside, so
- 22:45I got on my feet and made it along the wall of the door.
- 22:48It was Adrian and she was behind the wheel of my Cooper away from Where's
- 22:53Doyle? My car is going off to Nancy. I've got to stop the
- 22:56marbles to get out of the way. Somehow I managed to jump back just
- 23:02in time and keep them getting a press job with the tread of my own
- 23:04fist tires. And it took ten minutes of steady concentration to get it through
- 23:08my throbbing head that Adrian had actually stolen my car and it was gone.
- 23:14Oh the cold air must have helped me, because one thought led to another,
- 23:18and I finally began to separate the facts from the Fancis I hadn't dreamed
- 23:22all I thought I had. And when I realized that the whole idea hit
- 23:26me and hit me hard, I knew that i'd better get out to look
- 23:29Out Mountain in a hurry. I made it the sunset, hailed a cab
- 23:33and collapsed night. What I got Mountain road? Make it fast? Two
- 23:38years agen? Huh it's ten bucks? Does that help? It's important?
- 23:42Oh? It helps? Play. I know a great shortcut. No road
- 23:45that's not yet finished. How are bumps? You all won't matter, pal
- 23:49Let's go. When it was over, I felt like I'd crossed the country
- 24:00on a pogo stick. But the cab driver was a genius, and with
- 24:03a shortcut, we made the distance to look Out Mout in less than ten
- 24:06minutes. When we got near the place, I sent the cab back down
- 24:08the hill out of danger. Went the rest of the way on foot.
- 24:11As I got within sight of Adrian's bungalow, I saw Steve Doyle getting out
- 24:15of the yellow convertible. I ran up to the house, tried the door
- 24:18was locked. I know you're to take this join a part business. Oh
- 24:30wait toil drop that gun stans fail? Okay, you won't need that gun
- 24:36anymore. Toyle, just kick it over there out of the way. Tell
- 24:40y'all get you for this fellow. I doubt it's Steve. You're all finished,
- 24:44which you're too thick headed to see it. And I guess it's time
- 24:47to relax and wait for Adrian and we call the cops and we just arrived.
- 24:51Marlow. Don't turn around, oh kid, Adrian, we are Marlow.
- 24:53Touch your gun back here to me. Come on now, Steve,
- 24:59Steve, you heard bad, darling. Can you make it to the car.
- 25:02I'll try it. He got me in the side. It's bad,
- 25:07Steve. Sorry, Darling. Hurry, I'll be with you in a minute.
- 25:11I'll make it. Okay, Well Marlow, Yeah, okay, Adrian,
- 25:18tell me one thing first, Barlow, just stick get to Nancy.
- 25:21No, you kill graffing Time to shut him up too. So Steve will
- 25:26never know the truth, Willy, Adrian could be it was you who crossed
- 25:30him in said of the prison. You'll find out, not now, and
- 25:34you'll never realize how much I love him either. That's why I did it,
- 25:38Marlow, the only way I could hold him for myself. And I
- 25:42was willing to wait. Can you understand that? Yeah, I guess I
- 25:48can too bad. Love like yours has to be wasted on a guy like
- 25:52Steve can never get away, Honey, up with him. You'll never make
- 25:56it, maybe not, but if he goes out, at least I'll be
- 26:00with the Marlow. And that's the way I wander. If you're gonna do
- 26:03anything, Adrian, you better get it over with fast. And Siren's a
- 26:06friend of mine. He's coming here, coming, Steve. You're good guy,
- 26:10Marlow and a smart one. Just don't follow us. That's all along,
- 26:12Marlow, Happy New Year? Whoa follow that Colors plot here? Who
- 26:33isn't it Dave Doyle and Adrian Storry Bora. That road makes a horseshoe turn.
- 26:37That'll bring them out down below us there at that junction. I've got
- 26:41one of those streets blocked, but the other one's wide open. Bucky Barra.
- 26:44There she's stopping at the crossroad. Yeah, they've spotted my men down
- 26:47there. She's turning around. They're heading out the other way. She must
- 26:55be crazy, Marlow. They'll never make that curve at that speed. And
- 26:57that's slowing down, he Barra. She's heading straight for that stone wall.
- 27:18Wel speed, that's it it's all over both Jad when the boys got them
- 27:22killed instantly. By the way, how's your head feeling now any better?
- 27:26I'm okay, Burr. Did you take care on Nancy marshallaway? She locked
- 27:30herself upstairs, sent her home to Paul Ryker on the squad car. The
- 27:33driver hurries they can still be married at New Year's Eve? Ye? How
- 27:36the peg does Jerry Grafs kill earlier the night? Marlo? What made you
- 27:40change your mind? When I found a gold buckle near Grafts Buddy bar,
- 27:42I figured it was a fancy little belt buckle and Nancy had dropped. I
- 27:45saw exactly the same buckle when I was coming to after Doyle hit me on
- 27:48the head, and it was not a belt. It was on a shoe.
- 27:52Adrian shoe was the mate of the one i'd found. Once you know
- 27:56Adrian Starr killed Graff. You put the rest of it together? Is that
- 27:59it? Uh huh? See? For a price, Graft helped Adrian doublecross
- 28:02Steve. She had to kill him to keep him from talking. She hit
- 28:04Nancy out for the same reason. If she knew that if Steve ever got
- 28:08the Nancy, he'd learn the truth. I wonder why she didn't kill Nancy
- 28:11too. I think she intended to heborrow, and she did it all really
- 28:15because she loved a guy too much. Strange deal. Well right to the
- 28:18end. You know, she didn't have a chance to make that curve down
- 28:22the other way she was driving, not even if she wanted to make any
- 28:25borrow. Yeah. Well, it's five minutes to midnight, philm Happy New
- 28:29Year, Phella. I want to see a lot of you in nineteen forty
- 28:32nine. Same to you, Lieutenant. Good night. After Heborrow and the
- 28:42others left, I stayed up on Lookout Martin watched the new year come to
- 28:48Los Angeles, and New Year didn't seem to change things much, at least
- 28:53on the surface. Somewhere down the road, a gang's truck up o lang
- 28:59Zygne. I thought again of Adrian's starr. A girl who loved not wisely
- 29:04would call herself an old acquaintance. Yeah, I'll never forget. As I
- 29:11walked back to my car, the city was ringing out the old and ringing
- 29:15in the mule. And I wish then that some place on everybody's list of
- 29:19resolutions they'd make room for that cup of kindness. They were singing a lot,
- 29:26and then a guy could say Happy New Year, I mean it.
- 29:55The Adventures of Philip Marlowe created by Raymond Chandler, star Gerald Moore and is
- 30:00produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Script is by Meldon la Robert Mitchell and
- 30:06Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast were Gloria Blondell, Edgar Barrier, David
- 30:11Ellis, Lou Krugman, and Stan Waxman. Lieutenant Dbarrow was played by Jeff
- 30:15Corey. The special music was by Richard Durant. He sure and be with
- 30:23us again next week. When Philip Barlow says, they all knew he was
- 30:30aboard the yacht when it exploded and sank, and everybody called his death an
- 30:34accident. Yeah, that is everybody except the coughs himself. He said it
- 30:41was murder. An hour of wonderful, delirious comedy is still to come to
- 31:00you tonight on CBS. You'll soon hear Hollywood's Eve Arden, starring as the
- 31:04unusual school mistress our Miss Brooks. Later, Lamona Abner will open the doors
- 31:08of the Jotam Down Store in Pine Ridge, Arkansas, and let you stock
- 31:12up on the last from their never failing supply of Wisdom and good humor our
- 31:18Miss Brooks starring Eve Arden, is heard at nine point thirty and Lamit Abner
- 31:22at ten o'clock, both Eastern Standard Time over most of these same CBS network
- 31:26stations. This is Roy Rawn speaking for CBS the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome
- 31:51back. Well, just a fantastic episode. And you know, listening to
- 31:57this because at this point it's in where I'm recording this episode, It's been
- 32:01years since we finished up The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, and it just reminds
- 32:07me how much I really appreciate, you know, the pacing of the show,
- 32:13the writing, you know, the acting. It just moves, you
- 32:16know, in such a great way, you know, with all of these
- 32:21you know, fantastic scenes. And to be honest, this particular episode was
- 32:27one that I did think about, you know, doing when we were doing
- 32:30the Listener's Choice countdown where listeners voted for their favorite episodes, but I opted
- 32:37not to just because you know, it's a holiday episode and you know it
- 32:44wasn't at the at the holiday. But the thing with the Adventures of Philip
- 32:47marlow is that they didn't have, you know, a situation where eighty percent
- 32:54of the episodes were, you know, a typical formula, there were so
- 33:00many variations and when they broke away from that sort of typical Marlowe you know,
- 33:08has somebody walk into the office you know in Los Angeles, a sort
- 33:14of case and you get something you know different, you know, a New
- 33:20Year's theme case, or you had that there was a case where there was
- 33:24a reconconstituted castle in California. So there really was some creativity with a lot
- 33:34of the ideas. And I also do appreciate the endings. And I think
- 33:39the ending of this episode too, really does have a nice, you know,
- 33:45not overdone, but a really good, thought provoking conclusion as people you
- 33:52know, in nineteen forty eight looking forward towards the new year, and some
- 33:58pretty solid thoughts well delivered, buy more and well written. So I absolutely
- 34:04enjoyed this episode and was really glad to be able to. I do want
