- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:14The conversation you're about to join was inspired by our Spring
- 0:17Mixtape 2025 non series sermon series.
- 0:21Rather than a series, this will be a collection of sermons based
- 0:24on what God is leading us to preach on this spring.
- 0:27You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:29fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:32conversation. Welcome to this episode of
- 0:36Beyond the Sermon. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:38conversation. Jeremy preached for us this week
- 0:43from First Corinthians Chapter 3.
- 0:46And Jeremy, I want to start off with the question that I'm sure
- 0:50was on everyone's mind as they were leaving the service
- 0:54yesterday. What is a Kodjic Church?
- 0:58Christ Church of God in Christ. Yeah, I believe so.
- 1:03I I didn't even know that they were a Kodjic church until I
- 1:07drove by it again in the past year because I just knew them by
- 1:11like the title of the church. But yeah, Christ of God in
- 1:13church, I mean. Church of God in Christ, Yeah.
- 1:16Yeah, just another denomination. Yes, another denomination, yeah.
- 1:21What do you use that term, that term in your sermon?
- 1:23I was like, no one knows what that means.
- 1:26No one. I'm glad.
- 1:27I'm hoping. People are Googling.
- 1:29Yeah, there you go. And it is the same denomination
- 1:33that Denzel Washington was ordained into.
- 1:36Oh, is that right? Yeah.
- 1:38OK, there you go. You started off talking about
- 1:42your friend Dave Damian down in Mexico and but then quickly kind
- 1:48of took us into these different passages through scripture that
- 1:54talk about a couple, right? And Priscilla and Aquila.
- 1:58Always interesting to me that Priscilla is always listed
- 2:02first. Not always.
- 2:04Not always, but almost always. Almost when Paul's referring to
- 2:07her. Yeah, almost always, yeah.
- 2:11But yeah, I, I think I touched maybe more on that in the first
- 2:14service than the latter of like the importance of Priscilla and
- 2:18like what that could have potentially meant.
- 2:20I gave some more options in regards to her place in the
- 2:23church or the community or as a businesswoman or whatever it may
- 2:25have been. Also that like she's mentioned
- 2:28at all because usually sometimes with the men, like, it's assumed
- 2:31there's the woman there or the family, right?
- 2:34Like even when we talk about the feeding of the 5000, like is the
- 2:37assumption of 5000 men and their families.
- 2:40Yeah. And so it really shows her
- 2:43place. But then I touched in the first
- 2:45service about how, like, every man in ministry knows that
- 2:50there's like the other half, the woman that supports that
- 2:53encourages that, you know, is the backbone of the ministry.
- 2:58And then Rebecca was in in the second service when I got to
- 3:01that part. So I didn't mean to build her up
- 3:04like that on Mother's Day. Yeah, there you go.
- 3:07There you go. But that is always interesting
- 3:10to me that Paul plays such a priority on her among all the
- 3:14other women that he lifts up throughout his letters and and
- 3:18stuff like that. Even even in, I forget which one
- 3:21because they're playing together now, but even in one of them,
- 3:24right before Priscilla and Aquila, there's another woman
- 3:27that's being greeted or sending greetings from at the same at
- 3:33the same time. Yeah, all these women in
- 3:36ministry, Yeah, very early on. Stop taking credit, Methodists.
- 3:42We didn't. We didn't come up with that
- 3:44idea. We just let it keep going.
- 3:46Yeah, one of my little tidbit opinions that I have absolutely
- 3:53no way to prove about the Bible is that Priscilla was maybe the
- 4:00the chief author of Hebrews. And that's why the the author
- 4:07never identified themselves, because even in that culture,
- 4:12women in ministry, even though it was happening, still didn't
- 4:15quite have the same. Why her other women in the
- 4:20ministry at that time? Just specifically, like there
- 4:25are so many resonances with Paul's thinking and because of
- 4:30the time he spent with them and they were discipling him and.
- 4:36And that. Yeah.
- 4:37And so. And all the all the churches of
- 4:40the Gentiles are grateful to them, maybe potentially because
- 4:44of writing that was passed around.
- 4:48But but then again, you know that heart, like knowing that
- 4:51she and Aquila were Jewish in their background.
- 4:54And so to have a heart for those Jewish believers spread around
- 4:59and, and wanting to help bridge that gap because they'd been
- 5:04around that they'd been in Rome, they'd been in Corinth, they
- 5:06ended up in Ephesus, You know, then I'm sure God developed in
- 5:11them a heart, not just for the Jewish people there, but for the
- 5:14Gentiles and for helping them see what God had done through
- 5:19the Old Testament in the person and work of Jesus.
- 5:23Anyway, can't prove it, but I'd love to ask somebody someday
- 5:27when I get to heaven, whoever that person might be.
- 5:31Anyway, though, back to your sermon on Sun We.
- 5:34Can talk about anything else that's OK.
- 5:37You won't bring it back to croconol.
- 5:39I would be. Did you watch?
- 5:42The video no, come on, no, no, I was too busy changing your your
- 5:47your description that put the fasting sermon as my plagiarism.
- 5:55Well, you never. Found the thing that you
- 5:56plagiarized. You never found it and sent it
- 5:59to me. Oh, plagiarized is such a strong
- 6:01word. It's such a strong word, that's
- 6:03why I use it if I'm calling it the Scott Show man.
- 6:06It's inspiration. It's it's how God.
- 6:09'S speaking inspiration to say the exact words of the last.
- 6:13Person, I really don't think I did, no I but it did spark a
- 6:18spark, a thought that grew. Well, that's a thing nowadays if
- 6:21you will. Come on sermon copying where?
- 6:24Like down to like the hand gestures?
- 6:27Oh yeah, pastors just copying like mega church pastors.
- 6:29Yeah, it's, it's a real thing, Yeah.
- 6:33So don't look up our sermons and other mega church pastors.
- 6:38I mean, if a mega church pastor wants to copy one of our
- 6:40servants, they can. But by all means.
- 6:43Anyway, so you shared in your sermon about your friend Damian,
- 6:51but I wonder if there's anyone who's played kind of this role
- 6:55in your life, someone who's been kind of like Priscilla and
- 7:00Aquila and kind of taking you under their wing, so to speak,
- 7:05like they did with Paul. And then Apollo's, Oh, kind of
- 7:10raised you up in your faith. I'm I was thinking of like Co
- 7:15worker in Christ versus like discipling in the home.
- 7:20OK, types. I mean, we could go there too,
- 7:23no? No, you're fine.
- 7:24Yeah, because I was. I'd say the reason why I used
- 7:26Amianos is like. I didn't want it to seem like I
- 7:28had any favorites if I mentioned anybody like.
- 7:31Oh, sure. Here and that's why I mentioned
- 7:34like that that didn't happen in the first service, but that was
- 7:37one of the things that like in the Pew, I just felt like God
- 7:40was nudging me to. So in my in my written copy in
- 7:45what I did in first service, I didn't mention I didn't do
- 7:49denomination and then break it down to the individual and
- 7:52individuals of other churches being like Co workers in Christ
- 7:56or like who we partner with in ministry.
- 8:00And I felt like, yeah, I was pushing that.
- 8:02So to to see a high school student just do that anyway.
- 8:07But in regards to take me into their homes and disciple me, I
- 8:11was in my in my home church. There was a few families that
- 8:17kind of did that, but it wasn't like me specifically, like they
- 8:21did it in general. And I got to be a part of the
- 8:23things and that was really nice. And then I will I mean through
- 8:28our I brought it up before the not so ready for prime time
- 8:32singers where we go and see shut insurance.
- 8:34We'd always have dinner together before we went out.
- 8:36And so OK, shut it. And so we were like always in
- 8:38each other's homes and rotating who was hosting the group every
- 8:42couple of weeks. So that just made other people's
- 8:45homes feel like home and feel like community.
- 8:49And then in ministry, I mean, Demondiardo, yeah, I mean take
- 8:56you in feel at home and speaking biblical truth in your life,
- 9:011000% First one that comes to mind and does it well, like you
- 9:06when you're hosted by Deb, you're hosted by Deb.
- 9:10I think there's there's. Definitely a gift, a gift of
- 9:13hospitality. Yeah, I don't, I don't know how
- 9:15to how to explain it well, but yeah.
- 9:21And yeah, she's just too good to us.
- 9:23And I think if anyone has similar giftings to Deb and is
- 9:28able to use it in the way that she has, it can drastically
- 9:31change anyone that walks through the doors of their home.
- 9:37Yeah, that would be my my answer.
- 9:38How about you, anyone growing up?
- 9:40Because you can't say Deb after I said Deb.
- 9:43True. Anyone growing up there?
- 9:49There is a couple that volunteered with the youth group
- 9:53that I was part of through high school and they were, they were
- 9:59super intentional with me. But like not just me, but a few
- 10:05specific of, of the kids in the youth group that just kind of
- 10:09seemed like connected and, and that kind of thing.
- 10:13And so they would be one of them.
- 10:16And similarly, the, the youth leaders that we worked with when
- 10:20we were at Asbury, Meg and I, she started her freshman year.
- 10:25And then after we started dating a while, I jumped in and was
- 10:28working with the youth too. And so Jim and Lori were great
- 10:32ones. And you know, there would be
- 10:34times where they'd have the whole youth group over to their
- 10:37house and stuff. And then once all the kids left,
- 10:38you know, we'd sit and hang out with them for a while more.
- 10:41And they kind of took us under their wings.
- 10:43They were both Asbury grads and stayed in the area.
- 10:48Yeah. So that would be a few of them.
- 10:52Yeah. And then as far as ministry
- 10:55goes, I'm trying to like, think beyond the obvious answers of
- 11:00like Ron, who was a senior pastor, where when I was the
- 11:05assistant pastor, but also had been our pastor at St.
- 11:09John's bit had been, you know, my boss and seminary president
- 11:15and longtime family friend and all that kind of stuff.
- 11:19I'm trying to think who else besides there's a couple while
- 11:24we were in seminary, Chuck and Fran, and they just welcomed us
- 11:32into their family. They were part of the church
- 11:34plant that we were part of. And so they'd have us over for
- 11:38meals. We're in a small group together
- 11:40for a while. They had kids who were like
- 11:45early high school and middle school probably when we met and
- 11:50just invited us to kids games to different celebrations.
- 11:56Took us down to their family cabin one time like just really
- 12:01brought us in. And Fran ended up babysitting
- 12:07Tim for like 6 months after he was born while I finished up
- 12:12seminary on Friday mornings. So I'd go drop him off.
- 12:17I'd have, I didn't work on Fridays.
- 12:19And so I would get, you know, some 3 or 4 solid hours to, to
- 12:25really study and work on stuff for seminary.
- 12:29And so, yeah, they'd be another one that was kind of while we
- 12:33were in ministry. Like I was doing stuff with the
- 12:36media side of the church plant. Meg was doing curriculum stuff
- 12:41for the kids but. I haven't heard Chuck and Fran.
- 12:45Yeah, not as much since I've become a pastor because I think
- 12:49it changes the dynamics in other people's minds.
- 12:53It's a little harder in that sense, but.
- 12:57I like not being in charge. I hate this part.
- 13:02So you did such a good job of like you laid out the different
- 13:05passages and then you you made the shift to talking about the
- 13:10synergism stuff and Paul and Apollo's and you got very
- 13:14specific this time. I'm just going to edit out the
- 13:18rest of the podcast and just put that.
- 13:20Yeah, be planning to preach this sermon.
- 13:23How long were you working on this one?
- 13:25The idea for it happened Monday, I believe.
- 13:32So then Tuesday night we're a prayer session and I have my own
- 13:36little kneeling chair in the back and I'm praying and praying
- 13:43and praying. And I'll tell this guy, I don't
- 13:46really know how to describe it, but like I was praying and then
- 13:51I was praying. So like I went from consciously
- 13:54praying to consciously praying. Not about the sermon.
- 13:57And for those that have been to any of our prayer sessions,
- 14:00there's like read the scripture, meditate on the scripture, kind
- 14:04of like a free flowing prayer time.
- 14:06And then there's a transition into Popcorn prayer.
- 14:10And so like Scott'll go up, let us know we're transitioning
- 14:13Popcorn prayer. I'm praying, consciously
- 14:16praying. And then I'm consciously
- 14:17praying. And out of nowhere, Steve's
- 14:21Steve Shock is praying out loud. And I was like.
- 14:25As part of the popcorn prayer as part.
- 14:27Of the popcorn prayer. And I'm like, did he just jump
- 14:29start the popcorn prayer? Like what is happening?
- 14:33And then I looked at the clock and we were at the time frame
- 14:36where we would have been in the popcorn prayer for about 15
- 14:38minutes at that point. Yeah.
- 14:40And he wasn't the first one to pray that night.
- 14:43So then I'm, I'm like, I didn't fall asleep because it wasn't
- 14:46like a, a jolt awake, like, whoops.
- 14:48Oh, I was supposed to be praying and I've never fallen asleep
- 14:51kneeling and praying before. Yeah.
- 14:54So it's just a very odd experience.
- 14:55We like consciously praying to consciously praying and there'd
- 14:58be a gap of time in between. And so I don't know what God was
- 15:04doing in that time. But afterwards I had a little
- 15:07headache for whatever reason, I don't normally get headaches,
- 15:10but then I also just felt very at peace with doing this sermon.
- 15:14And so I was just like, that's really weird, really weird
- 15:19encounter. But if that's what it takes.
- 15:21So from there, then I reached out the next day to music, let
- 15:25him know what I was going to do. And then as I'm prepping and
- 15:28preparing and going through things, I think it was Thursday.
- 15:33It was better Thursday morning. Bulletins have to be printed.
- 15:36And Murray wanted a sermon title.
- 15:40Like, I hate coming up with sermon titles.
- 15:43So we start like, talking through, like, what I'm going to
- 15:47be talking about. And then I was like, wow.
- 15:51I want the individual to think about like, what are you
- 15:54building? Not just like, what are we
- 15:55building as a church, but like, what are you intentionally
- 15:59building? And so I was like, I'll build it
- 16:02up, build, build my life. Like that should be involved.
- 16:05And if it's already involved, I want it moved to to be the
- 16:08closing 1 so that as we're walking away with what are you
- 16:13building, then we go into that song.
- 16:17Yeah. And so I hope that was a
- 16:19blessing or fruitful for people as they're in worship
- 16:24experience. But yeah, it was, Oh yeah, that
- 16:28was the other thing. The whole there's, there's a
- 16:31couple sections in the second service that either were
- 16:33provided and it wasn't like, oh, I wish I'd changed that.
- 16:38And then I changed it in between services.
- 16:40It was like, as I'm sitting in the Pew just like God and
- 16:43pressing on me to like throw in this tidbit here, there or take
- 16:48out certain little sections. And so I don't know who it was
- 16:52for or what it was for, but I'm sure he does.
- 16:56God will use it, yeah. Yeah.
- 16:58Somehow, someway. So as as the person who doesn't
- 17:02preach every Sunday here at the church, talk to me about the the
- 17:07difference between being given the freedom, just kind of preach
- 17:13whatever God's laying on your heart versus jumping in in the
- 17:19middle of a series that I've been preaching.
- 17:24Oh, completely different animal. I would say the beginning part
- 17:30of preparing when jumping into a sermon is easier because you
- 17:34already have a direction you haven't, you know, all that kind
- 17:38of stuff. But then for me, the middle and
- 17:40end of that, the putting the pieces together so that it like
- 17:44comes in from the One Direction of the series and kind of helps
- 17:47lead into the next or, or just trying to make something that my
- 17:53brain understands or, or relay it in a way that makes sense.
- 17:58I don't know. I really struggle in that middle
- 18:01and and later half of sermon prepping when it comes to like
- 18:06the one offs. I struggle with coming up with
- 18:09the idea. But then once like God leads me
- 18:13to an idea, then it's easier for me to go with it, get where it's
- 18:18going because then like, OK, I know this is the like overall
- 18:21message. Here are the pieces he wants me
- 18:23to include. Maybe I need to look into one or
- 18:26two here or there. I prefer this or even if it's
- 18:29just like scripture, like instead of saying like the theme
- 18:33is loving our neighbors. Preaching style for me is much
- 18:37harder than teaching style, which some people would argue
- 18:40that say, but like I teach very different than I preach.
- 18:45And so teaching on a topic versus preaching on a topic
- 18:49would be way easier for me because then I can just like lay
- 18:52out all the Bible facts and jump you in a cohesive line of
- 18:55questioning around those Bible facts.
- 18:58But preaching on that is tough. But if you give me just like a
- 19:01chunk of Scripture and we just see where the Scripture leads
- 19:05and yeah, that kind of stuff, that's also different.
- 19:07I can't remember if it's if I'm an inductive or deductive
- 19:11thinker, a preacher, whatever. What's hardest for you?
- 19:15Yeah, by personality, I I like knowing where we're headed.
- 19:21And so having a series in place where I can think about not just
- 19:27an individual sermon, but you know, kind of the, the whole
- 19:32spread across the series. I appreciate having that time to
- 19:37be able to develop themes and ideas and bring different pieces
- 19:42that connect and, and build the fuller picture.
- 19:46And so individual sermons that are just kind of independent of
- 19:50anything else. Definitely harder for me, but
- 19:55God still shows up and he still helps.
- 19:59And like these last couple sermons that I've preached,
- 20:04finding the forge and whatever the one before that was.
- 20:08Oh yeah, finding the forge. And then you're going to need a
- 20:11bigger boat when I ruin Jaws for everybody.
- 20:15He didn't ruin jobs, he just spoiled it for the next
- 20:18generation. Well that's another thing is
- 20:21that in regards to remembering sermons.
- 20:24Is that people anticipate that you have every sermon you've
- 20:29done memorized. Yeah, now another chance.
- 20:32And so like they like God spoke something that clicked with
- 20:36them, that resonated with them that that they've held on to and
- 20:39has been either encouraging, illuminating, whatever it may
- 20:42be. And then they're like, Oh, yeah,
- 20:43remember when you preach about blah, blah, blah, it sounds
- 20:47familiar. Like it sounds great.
- 20:50It sounds like I need to hear that truth again.
- 20:53But like, it's, it's not that, you know, I dwell on on those
- 20:58things like a guy. It very much for me here feels
- 21:03much more like just passing it on from God.
- 21:07Yeah. And.
- 21:08And I think that's exponentially more true when you're preaching
- 21:13week after week after week after week.
- 21:17You know, like as part of my annual review with the SPR, one
- 21:24of the questions I ask them is what sermon or sermon series was
- 21:30most meaningful to you over the last year?
- 21:34So like from June last year through May this year or
- 21:37whatever, and somebody said something about a heart like
- 21:42his, the series we did on David in the fall.
- 21:45I was like, no, that wasn't this year like that, right?
- 21:52Like part of me had had forgotten that was even within
- 21:55this school year. It feels so long ago in my
- 22:00thinking about preaching. There's just been so much since
- 22:03then. And it's not to say that we're
- 22:06detached from the information that we're relaying and that
- 22:12it's we're so immersed in it in that time, and God's using it to
- 22:18form us, to push us, to have us raise other questions and draw
- 22:22closer to him. But then luckily, I think it's a
- 22:25giant blessing and our lives that it's not like that's the
- 22:29only time that he speaks to us. Then we hold on to that one
- 22:32thing like as he's continuously speaking to us and we're drawing
- 22:36closer to him, that that's not like the freshest thing on our
- 22:39mind that God has spoken into us or through US, right?
- 22:43And therefore. You know, because at least for
- 22:45me, most of the time, the by the time I get to preaching
- 22:50something, I've been living with those thoughts for, Yeah, weeks
- 22:56or months. Or, you know, like with that
- 23:00series, I started reading in, in first and second Samuel and
- 23:05reading a couple different books, looking at things
- 23:11sometime in the middle of the summer, you know, And so like,
- 23:14I'm, I'm living in that stuff, preparing, knowing what stories
- 23:18we're going to highlight and those kind of things and seeing
- 23:21how they fit together and how they help build this picture of
- 23:25who God is in David's life and can be in our life.
- 23:30I'm preaching out of what God's already been doing in me and
- 23:35preaching the sermon. And then really this
- 23:36conversation for the podcast. That's kind of the cap on that
- 23:40one. And I'm, you know, on to the
- 23:42next one I'm writing, I'm whatever.
- 23:44Or as I was preaching that one, I was already researching and
- 23:50reading on stuff for the next series.
- 23:55And so I, I think that's the hardest part about being the
- 24:01week by week preacher is preaching in the moment.
- 24:04And that being kind of the not the starting point of what God's
- 24:08doing, but like clear points in people's reception of that,
- 24:14like, and that might start something for somebody, but for
- 24:18me, it's kind of the end of the journey with that and living in
- 24:22the what's coming next and what needs to happen now and all that
- 24:30kind of stuff. So like, even as we're doing
- 24:32these individual sermons, I'm already thinking and praying
- 24:35about like, all right, what am I doing at the end of June?
- 24:38Check, got that one. What am I doing for the summer?
- 24:41Oh, that still needs a good bit of work.
- 24:45And so living in that tension of right now, but also what's
- 24:51coming in the next season. So show up on Sunday and find
- 24:57out what God did lay on my hard to preach and we'll we'll figure
- 25:03that out together. And if he doesn't and Scott
- 25:06starts Youtubing mega church pastors to copy, I'll send you
- 25:10that link in the show notes. Or if I mysteriously get sick on
- 25:14Saturday again, you'll know why. Well, that's our conversation
- 25:22for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 25:25We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 25:28To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode,
