- 2:39Speaker 2: you know, negative thirteen at my house and I'm just
- 2:46Speaker 2: trying to figure out how to stay warm. Yesterday was
- 2:48Speaker 2: such a big baby complaining all day.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I'm cold, I'm cold.
- 2:56Speaker 2: We live on Facebook and youtubeer stream everywhere you get
- 3:00Speaker 2: your podcasts, and we are on the web at aired
- 3:04Speaker 2: out vt dot com. Birthdays today, let's jump right in.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Scott Weston is on the list along with Tim Reynolds.
- 3:12Speaker 2: If you know any of these people, have some fun
- 3:15Speaker 2: with him, give him a shout out on Facebook this morning.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'll post him up to Sierra Massey, Britt Kelson. It's
- 3:23Speaker 2: a pretty cool name. Britt Kelson, Jen Freeman, Zoe Jones,
- 3:29Speaker 2: Nicole Bove, Connor Fowler, Patty Kelly, Sarah Tucker, Jesse Brault,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and Bennett mcfaughn. We're gonna give you the forecast here
- 3:46Speaker 2: are you are you? Are you ready for this? Because
- 3:50Speaker 2: here's the thing. It's it's chili, but it's not, it's not.
- 3:57Speaker 2: It's gonna get better again. Some towns negative six, some
- 4:05Speaker 2: towns like mine negative thirteen, barely either side of zero
- 4:12Speaker 2: for most towns. This morning a great day for an
- 4:16Speaker 2: ice bath with muddy gnomes. But spring is coming, and
- 4:22Speaker 2: so were the warmer attempts and the rain. I don't
- 4:25Speaker 2: know if you've heard, but the upward trend starts tomorrow
- 4:31Speaker 2: and by Wednesday rain, possible flooding, ice jams, all that
- 4:37Speaker 2: fun in the forecast by the middle of the week.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Mid twenties today and mostly sunny thirteen tonight, and mostly
- 4:50Speaker 2: cloudy tomorrow, Tuesday, partly cloudy showers coming into the picture
- 4:58Speaker 2: later in the day with eyes around forty degrees. I mean,
- 5:06Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. Is this a good forecast?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Is this not so good? I don't know. Some of
- 5:13Speaker 2: here are like I don't give a damn about the
- 5:16Speaker 2: ice jams. Bring on forties and by Wednesday near fifty
- 5:24Speaker 2: with rain showers, Sugar makers going to be very busy
- 5:30Speaker 2: collecting SAP. I'm not sure when the boil will begin,
- 5:34Speaker 2: but I'm guessing that it will begin very soon Tomorrow.
- 5:43Speaker 2: First of all, before I forget tomorrow, Berry City or
- 5:47Speaker 2: Granite City blast baseball is going to be in here
- 5:53Speaker 2: and I can't wait they're coming back. They're going to
- 5:56Speaker 2: be talking about Cooperstown. I'm not sure exactly which kids
- 6:00Speaker 2: are going to be on the air, but it'll be
- 6:02Speaker 2: two and there will be others. And I have supported
- 6:07Speaker 2: these kids consistently for the past couple of months, and
- 6:15Speaker 2: as I said to him last time, let's get you
- 6:18Speaker 2: on in the dead of winter and give an update.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Am I surprised that they have raised enough money that
- 6:27Speaker 2: our community here in Central Vermont has helped them raise
- 6:34Speaker 2: and supported them enough to raise enough money to go
- 6:36Speaker 2: to Cooperstown, which has got a huge price tag on it.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I'm not surprised at all, expect it actually, and that's
- 6:44Speaker 2: exactly what's happened. So congratulations to them. And we're going
- 6:50Speaker 2: to be kind of recapping things a little bit with
- 6:53Speaker 2: them and talking about some of their fundraising efforts and
- 6:58Speaker 2: how successful they've been. And they have a lot of
- 7:00Speaker 2: people to think and I look forward to giving him
- 7:03Speaker 2: the microphones tomorrow to do just that. Also, don't forget
- 7:12Speaker 2: tomorrow is and I know you haven't forgotten tomorrow's town
- 7:16Speaker 2: meeting day. I say, don't forget to vote yes for
- 7:23Speaker 2: Central Vermont Home Health and hospice town funding. And here's why.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Just last year alone, we are talking about almost three
- 7:36Speaker 2: thousand patients in the twenty three towns of Central Vermont
- 7:43Speaker 2: that Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice has served. And god,
- 7:51Speaker 2: I hate that word served, because it's really more like
- 7:56Speaker 2: three thousand patients that they have drastically changed their lives
- 8:02Speaker 2: in a positive way, and not just the patient but
- 8:06Speaker 2: their entire families. We're talking about just in the last
- 8:13Speaker 2: year alone, over fifty thousand visits, twenty eight thousand home health,
- 8:21Speaker 2: nine thousand hospice, ten thousand long term care. Look at
- 8:26Speaker 2: these numbers, this is amazing. Seventeen hundred family child health visits,
- 8:36Speaker 2: four hundred and fifty palliative care consults. I hope you're
- 8:41Speaker 2: catching this. This is absolutely beyond impressive, and I ask
- 8:52Speaker 2: you to post a comment, a gesture of support if
- 9:03Speaker 2: you can, in some way, shape or manner to Central
- 9:09Speaker 2: Vermont Home Health and Hospice. These are wonderful people who
- 9:16Speaker 2: work so incredibly hard, and frankly, I don't know how
- 9:23Speaker 2: they do it, and I have said in the past,
- 9:29Speaker 2: I couldn't do it for five minutes. I could not
- 9:32Speaker 2: handle tough work like that. It's really staggering. And we're
- 9:41Speaker 2: not talking about a team of people that's millions strong.
- 9:47Speaker 2: We're talking about several hundred employees here in Central Vermont
- 9:53Speaker 2: who are so committed, so devoted to this line of
- 9:57Speaker 2: work into caring for for honors. So here's why the
- 10:01Speaker 2: town funding tomorrow, the town funding vote is so important.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Practically all of the money, most of the money that
- 10:13Speaker 2: Central Vermount Home Health gets in the way of grants
- 10:20Speaker 2: and fundraising, is used to make up the difference for
- 10:28Speaker 2: reimbursement from Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid. They do so much,
- 10:38Speaker 2: but they need to bridge that gap of that other
- 10:43Speaker 2: twenty percent to keep up with the same high level
- 10:48Speaker 2: of care that they have been doing and have been
- 10:53Speaker 2: committed to for over one hundred and ten years. I
- 10:59Speaker 2: said it before and I'll say it again. Without Central
- 11:01Speaker 2: Vermont Home Health and Hospice, we're in a lot of trouble.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Think about that tomorrow. Down Meeting day sponsors This morning,
- 11:14Speaker 2: a shout out to GK Auto Detailing in East Berry
- 11:19Speaker 2: just before the roundabout whether you're getting ready for a
- 11:22Speaker 2: car show, which we're gonna be talking a lot about
- 11:24Speaker 2: car shows in thecoming weeks here. I can't help it, JD.
- 11:30Speaker 2: It's still wintertime. I'm not ready to get my car out.
- 11:33Speaker 2: It's going to be several months before I get my car.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I know this, I know I have a seventy six
- 11:41Speaker 2: that I'm just like I can't stop thinking about as
- 11:47Speaker 2: mental health for me. I will be talking a lot
- 11:50Speaker 2: about car shows in the coming weeks. We got a
- 11:54Speaker 2: lot of salt that's got to get washed off the
- 11:56Speaker 2: roads before I even think about getting mine out. But
- 12:01Speaker 2: if you want to get the winter grime cleaned off
- 12:06Speaker 2: and out of your vehicle, if you are like so
- 12:10Speaker 2: many who really enjoy a spotless vehicle, make it GK
- 12:17Speaker 2: Auto Detailing any Sperry seriously countless satisfied customers one of
- 12:25Speaker 2: our sponsors, and I'll be over there real soon with
- 12:28Speaker 2: my rig, probably even getting a ye undercarriage. What do
- 12:38Speaker 2: you call it? You know what I'm talking about, My
- 12:40Speaker 2: God to prevent any rusting under coating, That's what I'm
- 12:51Speaker 2: talking about. Greg Kelly fifteen at gmail dot com. All
- 12:56Speaker 2: new customers, by the way, five percent off if you
- 12:59Speaker 2: mentioned aired out, So they're gonna take good carry over there.
- 13:02Speaker 2: You're gonna be driving in style you're gonna look good.
- 13:04Speaker 2: And if you're driving in a clean vehicle, especially if
- 13:07Speaker 2: you put some miles on during the during the winter.
- 13:10Speaker 2: It doesn't matter what's happening outside. As long as what's
- 13:12Speaker 2: happening inside is clean and frash, it smells good, that's
- 13:17Speaker 2: gonna be good for you.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Uh.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Also a shout out to BCK real Estate right here
- 13:22Speaker 2: on North Main Street if you are even remotely thinking
- 13:26Speaker 2: about buying, selling, maybe getting into some commercial property. Maybe
- 13:31Speaker 2: you're thinking about land. Yeah, this is this is a
- 13:37Speaker 2: busy time of year because spring's coming, and they know
- 13:41Speaker 2: this over at BCK real Estate, they know that people
- 13:44Speaker 2: are like, to hell with this. I gotta get out
- 13:46Speaker 2: of this house. I gotta look for a new house.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I gotta look for some land. I want to build.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I want to do something. Eighty six North Main Street.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Get your questions answered accurately and timely. John beyond A
- 13:58Speaker 2: Linilo and the rest of his team are right there.
- 14:01Speaker 2: They're there every day four seven, nine thirty three sixty six.
- 14:05Speaker 2: You can call him, ask him a question, or just
- 14:08Speaker 2: hop in the car and head over there. I know
- 14:11Speaker 2: that you know Fanny and Freddy, I know they're they're
- 14:15Speaker 2: saying that the new norm for twenty twenty five is
- 14:20Speaker 2: going to be hovering around what six six and a
- 14:23Speaker 2: half percent something like that. Don't get freaked out by
- 14:27Speaker 2: what's coming down the national pipe. Talk with John directly.
- 14:31Speaker 2: He's dialed into what's going on locally right here in
- 14:35Speaker 2: central Vermont and our real estate market. NBA. Last night
- 14:40Speaker 2: Celtics got to win. I know the attentions were really
- 14:44Speaker 2: high at Chritsberg this weekend for the Lady Cadets, and
- 14:52Speaker 2: it's that game. High school sports is on fire right now.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Boys semi finals at the Auditorium tonight Williamstown and West Rutland,
- 15:05Speaker 2: followed by twin Field and Danville. Those are a couple
- 15:08Speaker 2: of games that are just going to be electric if
- 15:12Speaker 2: you can get over there to the odd do It
- 15:15Speaker 2: Vermont State Wrestling Championships. Speaking of the auditorium, those were
- 15:19Speaker 2: this past weekend Mount Anthony one. I think Spalding was third.
- 15:25Speaker 2: But Mickey Karen is going to be coming on soon
- 15:28Speaker 2: to talk up the Barry wrestling program and dig deep
- 15:32Speaker 2: into the results, and I'm very much looking forward to that.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I don't know what day. It could be tomorrow morning,
- 15:40Speaker 2: but we'll see if we can sneak them on by phone. Yeah,
- 15:49Speaker 2: community calendar, We're going to take a dive on that too.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Ninety seventh Academy Awards took place last night, and not
- 15:58Speaker 2: to say that it lasted forever, but by the time
- 16:01Speaker 2: it was over, Elon Musk had six more kids. I mean,
- 16:03Speaker 2: this is really something else I was going to ask
- 16:09Speaker 2: this morning. I was gonna make the Facebook question of
- 16:15Speaker 2: the day, did you bother to watch the Oscars last night?
- 16:20Speaker 2: But instead I'm like, you know, you already know the answer.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And the last time that I talked about the Academy
- 16:28Speaker 2: Awards on the air last year, this time I received
- 16:31Speaker 2: a whole heap of shit from people saying, Jad, why
- 16:36Speaker 2: are you spending time talking about the Academy Awards. Nobody watches,
- 16:40Speaker 2: nobody cares who gets an oscar and who doesn't. So
- 16:47Speaker 2: I'm not going to ask you if you watched the Oscars.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I'm going to just assume that you didn't. And now
- 16:52Speaker 2: I'll get some shit from people who were the huge
- 16:55Speaker 2: fans of the Oscars, saying, of course I watched the Oscars.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Billy Joel, My understanding is that he is He's okay.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I guess he took a little tumble from what I gathered,
- 17:19Speaker 2: seventy five years old, fell on stage during a show
- 17:26Speaker 2: in Connecticut that I guess was a couple of days ago,
- 17:29Speaker 2: maybe last week. Well bruised up seventy five years old. Now,
- 17:38Speaker 2: if I was Billy's manager, no disrespect to Billy Joel
- 17:43Speaker 2: been a big fan my whole life. But if I
- 17:45Speaker 2: was Billy's boss, I'd be like, Billy, just sit down
- 17:51Speaker 2: at the piano. Don't be getting up and dancing around.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Apparently this all went down with at the end of
- 18:01Speaker 2: It's Still Rock and Roll to me, lost his balance
- 18:04Speaker 2: twirling the microphone stand and tossing it. If you're seventy
- 18:08Speaker 2: five and you're tossing microphone stands on around on stage
- 18:18Speaker 2: like you're David Lee Roth, somebody who's helping you out
- 18:23Speaker 2: in your management team should be telling you to stop.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Shouldn't be doing that. You're playing the piano. You're not
- 18:30Speaker 2: doing acrobatics spinning stuff around like this. Billy, sit down
- 18:36Speaker 2: and play the piano. Oh, here comes the comments on
- 18:44Speaker 2: the Academy Awards this morning. Okay, all right, what else
- 18:53Speaker 2: is happening listen? I don't know what that whole shit
- 19:02Speaker 2: show was about on Friday at the White House. But
- 19:10Speaker 2: it was really intense, and I watched I went back
- 19:14Speaker 2: and watched it a few times. Who do you think
- 19:19Speaker 2: is the the And I asked you Newt, who do
- 19:23Speaker 2: you think was the winner in the grand scheme of things?
- 19:26Speaker 2: Looking back in hindsight? Was the winner Trump? Was it
- 19:35Speaker 2: jd Vance or was it Putin?
- 19:39Speaker 4: H Yeah, so we're talking about the blow up in
- 19:41Speaker 4: the Oval Office on Friday.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Yeah, what do you think?
- 19:44Speaker 4: Sorry, I just came in on the phone here. I
- 19:48Speaker 4: think it was Putin. I think they were toasting things
- 19:51Speaker 4: in Russia. And you know, I mean I I tend
- 19:56Speaker 4: to be rearly middle the middle of the road on
- 20:00Speaker 4: some of some of these things. But but uh, I
- 20:03Speaker 4: I it looked to me as if jd.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Vance threw the first punch. And uh and and and
- 20:12Speaker 3: I just didn't think that he.
- 20:15Speaker 4: I didn't think that Zelensky really wanted the treatment that
- 20:20Speaker 4: he got.
- 20:21Speaker 3: And I don't think it looked good.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, he was. He was a
- 20:28Speaker 2: little warm too, but nowhere nowhere near nowhere near jd
- 20:34Speaker 2: Vance And and Trump. I mean, uh, but I know,
- 20:39Speaker 2: I know the reporters. The reporters loved it. I mean,
- 20:42Speaker 2: if you were a camera operator working for a news
- 20:45Speaker 2: news agency, that would have probably but that probably been
- 20:51Speaker 2: one of the highlights of of your career.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, because that's that's never really happened like that
- 20:59Speaker 4: before in the overlap. So I, like you said it,
- 21:02Speaker 4: I think it is one of the highlights of it
- 21:04Speaker 4: of their career. And and you know, unfortunately, and I
- 21:07Speaker 4: and I think and I think that.
- 21:10Speaker 3: You know, it was probably staged that way to be
- 21:13Speaker 3: that way.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I mean, I think that you know, Trump and Vance
- 21:16Speaker 4: probably knew exactly what they were going to do.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I think. So I've seen a lot of comments about that.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of people say that it was
- 21:25Speaker 2: that it was staged, and I do wonder. I do wonder,
- 21:30Speaker 2: and it's you.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Know, it's, man, it's too bad that it it kind
- 21:33Speaker 4: of played out the way it did, because man, it's
- 21:38Speaker 4: it just doesn't look fair, you know. I mean, you know,
- 21:42Speaker 4: you've got this big, behemouth country that uh, you know
- 21:46Speaker 4: that could could.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Could be doing a lot, you know, and and is.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Doing a lot to to help Ukraine. You know, it
- 21:51Speaker 4: has been doing a lot, but uh, you know, to
- 21:56Speaker 4: to to be to be the bully in the room
- 21:58Speaker 4: is not cool, you know.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I think I think, no matter who
- 22:08Speaker 2: you are and where you stand politically, I think that
- 22:14Speaker 2: there's something to be said for if you're going to
- 22:18Speaker 2: be a leader, for being courageous, not being coward, not
- 22:23Speaker 2: being a pushover, but also exercising a certain level of class.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 22:34Speaker 4: And yeah, the whole shouting over each other thing was
- 22:37Speaker 4: not good.
- 22:38Speaker 2: It's it's how stunned were you when you watched this?
- 22:43Speaker 2: And how many times did did you watch it? I had.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I had to go back over and watch it a
- 22:48Speaker 2: couple more times because I literally couldn't believe it.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Well, the first time I heard about it was on
- 22:54Speaker 4: the radio, and then I had to go back and.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Watch it, and I was like, oh my god.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's just it's just so not the
- 23:04Speaker 4: way anyone who is considered the most powerful person in
- 23:08Speaker 4: the world should act. And you know, I mean he's
- 23:14Speaker 4: got the you know, Trump clearly has the cards. Not
- 23:17Speaker 4: to steal a line from the whole debacle, but but
- 23:21Speaker 4: you know, it's like, yeah, I know, you know, we
- 23:23Speaker 4: know you've got the cards, but like, but you know,
- 23:27Speaker 4: be kind, you know, be diplomatic. This is called the diplomatic,
- 23:32Speaker 4: not about you know, yeah, sorry, yeah, no, that.
- 23:35Speaker 2: That's the word. It's it's be diplomatic. I mean, you're
- 23:38Speaker 2: gonna you're gonna turner a lot more respect that way, I.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Think, right exactly, Yeah, yeah, I mean I think it's
- 23:47Speaker 4: pretty clear we've seen this for a long time that
- 23:49Speaker 4: that Trump likes, uh likes Putin, and and I think
- 23:53Speaker 4: he's just kind of playing into uh Putin's playbook. And
- 23:57Speaker 4: and it's it's not good. You know, it's not good
- 24:00Speaker 4: for our country. Yeah, and it certainly doesn't look it's
- 24:04Speaker 4: the the the the optics of it are.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Just even worse.
- 24:08Speaker 4: I mean, it's just it's just so bad for all
- 24:12Speaker 4: the reasons you and I just discussed.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know if you heard the news this morning,
- 24:17Speaker 2: but European leaders held an emergency summit in London to
- 24:22Speaker 2: rally support for Ukraine. The British Prime Minister is speaking
- 24:28Speaker 2: out trying to wrestle control of some of the peace
- 24:34Speaker 2: negotiations away from the United States, saying if you can't,
- 24:40Speaker 2: you know, if you can't do it, then then we will,
- 24:43Speaker 2: along with France.
- 24:46Speaker 4: And they've got a lot to you know, they've got
- 24:48Speaker 4: a little more skin in the game because there is
- 24:50Speaker 4: not an ocean between them and Russia, you know.
- 24:55Speaker 2: So, yeah, it's Trump's going to be addressed a joint
- 25:00Speaker 2: session of Congress tomorrow for the first time in his
- 25:04Speaker 2: his term, an opportunity for him to reassure voters about
- 25:09Speaker 2: his leadership. A lot of a lot of people are
- 25:14Speaker 2: are referring to this exchange with with Zelensky as catastrophic.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Do you do you think and I listen, both of
- 25:27Speaker 2: you and I are far from political experts here, but
- 25:30Speaker 2: do you think that some repair is this relationship salvageable?
- 25:36Speaker 2: Can there be some repair here? Do you think?
- 25:40Speaker 4: Well, you know, just just my opinion as a as
- 25:42Speaker 4: a lowly vermonterter, I think it is.
- 25:45Speaker 3: I mean I think I think what was that word
- 25:48Speaker 3: that you just used.
- 25:51Speaker 2: To repair this relationship, right, yeah?
- 25:54Speaker 4: Yeah, But I mean they said you said that the
- 25:56Speaker 4: catastrophe catastrophe.
- 25:59Speaker 3: I don't think it's catas traic.
- 26:00Speaker 4: I think and I think that it would be catastrophic
- 26:03Speaker 4: had they not ended it saying you know that it's
- 26:07Speaker 4: not over yet and that you know, ah that I
- 26:11Speaker 4: think that there's there's still a door open to revisiting this.
- 26:15Speaker 3: I think Trump even said at the end of the meeting,
- 26:17Speaker 3: you come.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Back and be you know more you know, thankful or whatever.
- 26:24Speaker 4: And I think I think Zelensky was thankful. But uh,
- 26:28Speaker 4: you know, unfortunately, you know, the the whole thing went
- 26:32Speaker 4: south before the thanks came out and right, you know,
- 26:35Speaker 4: and I think that was by design.
- 26:36Speaker 3: But but so.
- 26:40Speaker 4: I don't think it's catastrophic, and I think that it it,
- 26:42Speaker 4: you know, I think it's it's more of what what
- 26:46Speaker 4: we often see from from Trump, which is, you know,
- 26:50Speaker 4: he wants to make sure that everyone knows he's in charge,
- 26:53Speaker 4: and he's made that very clear with this. But but
- 26:57Speaker 4: I don't.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Think it means it's the end of negotiation over this.
- 27:00Speaker 4: And I think that the US will probably eventually, you know,
- 27:06Speaker 4: I think we'll get past this and have another meeting
- 27:09Speaker 4: and and the US will continue support. Yeah, but you know,
- 27:15Speaker 4: this is all part of that that part of the deal,
- 27:20Speaker 4: you know, putting himself in a big position, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 4: next to the little littler guy, which you know, again
- 27:28Speaker 4: it looks really bad. It's it's a lot of bullying,
- 27:31Speaker 4: and nobody likes that.
- 27:34Speaker 1: You know.
- 27:35Speaker 2: It's sometimes when emotions get high, it's hard to remember
- 27:44Speaker 2: that the world is watching and yeah, but.
- 27:51Speaker 4: I mean I think they knew that with all those
- 27:53Speaker 4: TV cameras on them, they.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Knew, yeah, you know, and lights. Yeah. Can you can
- 28:00Speaker 2: you imagine? Can you imagine? And maybe you've already imagined
- 28:06Speaker 2: this coming out of that meeting as JD vance, You're
- 28:15Speaker 2: hot under the collar, your blood pressure is pumping, you're
- 28:21Speaker 2: red hot. Cameras are, cameras are off you. You pass
- 28:25Speaker 2: through the door where you have your first little bit
- 28:30Speaker 2: of privacy, and you say, all right, kids, get in
- 28:37Speaker 2: the car, We're going to Vermont's go skiing.
- 28:40Speaker 4: I know.
- 28:41Speaker 3: It's you know, it's almost hard to imagine.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Going from you know, that meeting at the at the
- 28:49Speaker 4: Oval office, Yeah, to like, you know, get in the car,
- 28:54Speaker 4: jump on a plane being Vermont by I don't know,
- 28:57Speaker 4: it's here my late Friday night, I imagine.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Or was it Saturday morning? Saturday Saturday morning?
- 29:05Speaker 4: Yeah, so uh yeah, it's hard to imagine, you know,
- 29:11Speaker 4: but I guess that's life when you are, you know,
- 29:14Speaker 4: a politician on the national stage and you've got to
- 29:17Speaker 4: be in eighteen different places in one week, all over
- 29:20Speaker 4: the all over the country, if not you know, the globe,
- 29:23Speaker 4: and you know, so that they're used to this, and
- 29:27Speaker 4: there's there are people who are just looking at the
- 29:29Speaker 4: clock and saying, okay, go here now, you know, and uh,
- 29:36Speaker 4: but it's got to be tough, and uh, you know,
- 29:41Speaker 4: regardless of like I said, I think you threw the
- 29:43Speaker 4: first punch and and you know, so I'm not a
- 29:46Speaker 4: big fan of h of J. D. E.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Vans. But but.
- 29:52Speaker 4: You know, if if I, if I could be considered
- 29:56Speaker 4: a Republican, it would be an old school Vermont Republican.
- 29:59Speaker 5: Let me tell you, yeah, even if you are, even
- 30:04Speaker 5: if you are not a fan of JD.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Vance, would you have taken the time to make some
- 30:20Speaker 2: signs and get in the car and head on up
- 30:25Speaker 2: to Sugar Bush and stand out in the cold and
- 30:31Speaker 2: protest for me personally, Even if I'm not a fan
- 30:35Speaker 2: of JD. Vance, regardless of how I feel about him,
- 30:40Speaker 2: I can think of a million damn things that I
- 30:45Speaker 2: could use my time more wisely to do, especially on
- 30:49Speaker 2: a Saturday. Yeah.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Oh absolutely, sorry, the dog is.
- 30:57Speaker 4: All right.
- 30:58Speaker 3: I think the dog needs to go out. We're just
- 30:59Speaker 3: gonna let him go out for.
- 31:00Speaker 4: A second year. And and then I'll answer that question.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean.
- 31:06Speaker 4: I think I would not have I mean, I, you know, I,
- 31:11Speaker 4: you know, we I'll preface this by saying, of course,
- 31:14Speaker 4: you know, one of the wonderful things about our country
- 31:16Speaker 4: is that we live in a place where we have
- 31:19Speaker 4: freedom of speech, and that enables people to protest as
- 31:23Speaker 4: they would like, and so, you know, respect for that.
- 31:28Speaker 3: But I think that and here's what I think is
- 31:32Speaker 3: the difference here.
- 31:36Speaker 4: You know, if this had been a political event like
- 31:39Speaker 4: a rally, I've shown up, I've protested in d C.
- 31:44Speaker 3: I've pested, and I've protested various things.
- 31:47Speaker 4: But these were at political events, organized protests at political events.
- 31:53Speaker 4: They were not, you know, at at at events where
- 31:57Speaker 4: someone is just taking their family on vacation in Vermont.
- 32:03Speaker 4: He was not here in an official capacity. He was
- 32:06Speaker 4: not here as Vice President of the United States. He
- 32:10Speaker 4: was here as JD. Vance, a civilian not doing his job.
- 32:15Speaker 4: He was just here taking his family on vacation with
- 32:18Speaker 4: his wife and children. And I think as Vermonters we
- 32:22Speaker 4: should take the high road. As Baraco. Well, actually I
- 32:26Speaker 4: think it was Michelle Obama who said that, you know,
- 32:29Speaker 4: go high, like take the high road and let him
- 32:33Speaker 4: have I think it would have.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Spoken way stronger words.
- 32:38Speaker 4: You know, to you know, these they would be way
- 32:41Speaker 4: stronger actions to just take the high road and say,
- 32:45Speaker 4: you know what, We're going to let him have his
- 32:47Speaker 4: family vacation in Vermont and not say anything. If I
- 32:51Speaker 4: had run into him on the street, you know, and
- 32:53Speaker 4: and had the opportunity to say hi, I would have
- 32:56Speaker 4: just said, Hey, you know, welcome to Vermont. I hope
- 32:58Speaker 4: you have a great time here. And if anybody of
- 33:00Speaker 4: he said anything about politics, I'd be like, you know what,
- 33:02Speaker 4: I disagree with some of the stuff you do, but
- 33:04Speaker 4: I hope you have a great time with your family here,
- 33:07Speaker 4: and welcome to Vermont. And I think, like I said,
- 33:10Speaker 4: I think that would have spoken way stronger and way
- 33:14Speaker 4: louder than you know, having you know, all these people
- 33:19Speaker 4: show up with signs and stuff, which you know makes
- 33:22Speaker 4: everybody feel good.
- 33:24Speaker 3: But you know, jd. Vance already knows that eighty five
- 33:28Speaker 3: percent of this state went to Kamala Harris in the
- 33:31Speaker 3: presidential election. No, you know, it's no secret. So you know,
- 33:35Speaker 3: they're not saying.
- 33:36Speaker 4: Anything that everybody doesn't already know anyway, But you know,
- 33:42Speaker 4: and I understand that there was a lot of immediate
- 33:44Speaker 4: anger because of the mess in the Oval office the
- 33:46Speaker 4: day before so you know, again, people have the right
- 33:50Speaker 4: to protest, and I it was there was, it.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Was a hot topic, particularly that day. But still I
- 33:57Speaker 3: don't think I would have done that.
- 34:00Speaker 4: I think I think I would have, you know, looked
- 34:04Speaker 4: at myself as a Vermonter, and as a vermont particularly
- 34:08Speaker 4: one who's worked in the hospitality industry his whole life.
- 34:12Speaker 4: I I just couldn't. I couldn't treat a visitor to
- 34:17Speaker 4: our state that way. I don't care who it is.
- 34:19Speaker 4: I don't care if it's Vladimir Putin.
- 34:20Speaker 3: I I you know, I would. I just I think
- 34:24Speaker 3: as Vermontras we need to be kind.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Well it's it's it's respectful too. But I mean, you know,
- 34:34Speaker 2: you sure you have a great point that you know,
- 34:37Speaker 2: many of us want to exercise our right to to
- 34:42Speaker 2: speak out, to protest, to have a voice, to have
- 34:45Speaker 2: an opinion. But there's there's always time and place, time
- 34:49Speaker 2: and place, always your time, and there's a.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Time and place, you know.
- 34:52Speaker 4: Take it back to let's let's compare this to a
- 34:56Speaker 4: local situation. Say you've got a local select board member
- 35:00Speaker 4: and the select board is discussing an issue that you're
- 35:05Speaker 4: passionate about, and that one select board member is on
- 35:09Speaker 4: an opposite side from you. When you see that local
- 35:11Speaker 4: select board member in the grocery store, do you want
- 35:14Speaker 4: to accost them right there with their wife and kids
- 35:17Speaker 4: while they're shopping for their groceries. No, you go to
- 35:20Speaker 4: the select board meeting and you bring it up, and
- 35:22Speaker 4: that is the proper time and place.
- 35:25Speaker 3: And I think that that is the difference here. It
- 35:28Speaker 3: really is. You know, if this was a political rally.
- 35:32Speaker 4: Or other campaign event or whatever, absolutely show up, protest,
- 35:36Speaker 4: do your thing. But you know, we've got to start
- 35:39Speaker 4: drawing the line between politicians' personal lives and their job.
- 35:45Speaker 3: You know, we had a.
- 35:47Speaker 4: Legislator in Lamoyle County who she got elected and she
- 35:52Speaker 4: quit after two weeks in office because.
- 35:57Speaker 3: You know, there were threats.
- 35:58Speaker 4: To her family, and that's just it's just not acceptable.
- 36:02Speaker 4: It's just not it's not the way things should be,
- 36:05Speaker 4: particularly here in Vermont.
- 36:07Speaker 3: I like to think that we're you know, we're.
- 36:09Speaker 4: A little more aware of some of this stuff because
- 36:12Speaker 4: we don't have big city well we don't have you know,
- 36:15Speaker 4: really big cities anyway.
- 36:17Speaker 3: To me, Burlington's big city. But like, but you know,
- 36:21Speaker 3: so we're a smaller.
- 36:23Speaker 4: State with smaller communities. And we tend to know our
- 36:25Speaker 4: neighbors and know each other, and therefore I think we're
- 36:29Speaker 4: a little kinder and gentler than than some places. I
- 36:32Speaker 4: don't think anybody could argue with that. But I think
- 36:35Speaker 4: part of that is is that we really need to,
- 36:39Speaker 4: you know, draw the line between personal lives and professional
- 36:43Speaker 4: lives and try to be respectful of people's need to
- 36:48Speaker 4: take a weekend and Vermont with their kids.
- 36:50Speaker 3: I don't care who it is.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Surelee just wrote it doesn't speak well for Vermont, right, you.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Know, exactly right, That's exactly what I'm saying. It does not.
- 37:02Speaker 3: And there's been a lot I mean, I've been reading
- 37:03Speaker 3: some of the comments.
- 37:04Speaker 4: On some of the Facebook posts on this, and like,
- 37:05Speaker 4: there's a lot of people who agree with this that
- 37:08Speaker 4: like it just you.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Know, right or wrong.
- 37:11Speaker 4: Just because something is right, yet we have the right
- 37:13Speaker 4: to do it, we have the right to free speech.
- 37:15Speaker 4: Doesn't mean that that's the time and place is correct
- 37:19Speaker 4: for that action.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, you know you you want you
- 37:29Speaker 2: want this individual to leave with a positive experience, a
- 37:37Speaker 2: positive takeaway, even if not all of it's positive, but
- 37:42Speaker 2: at least that they can speak well of their visit
- 37:48Speaker 2: to your state beyond exactly beyond. It was cold and
- 37:56Speaker 2: the skiing conditions were great. You want to you I
- 38:00Speaker 2: want to have maybe something a little bit beyond that
- 38:04Speaker 2: kind of positivity.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Yeah, what I would have loved to have seen, you know,
- 38:10Speaker 4: instead of reading about what did happen, the big protests
- 38:13Speaker 4: and all the signs of everything in the national media,
- 38:15Speaker 4: you know, on some national I think it was The
- 38:18Speaker 4: Guardian or something like that. Anyway, instead I think, you know,
- 38:23Speaker 4: I would have loved to have seen. And I was
- 38:25Speaker 4: saying this on Friday. I was like, man, I hope
- 38:28Speaker 4: Vermont does this right this weekend. And you know, I
- 38:32Speaker 4: think it would have, like I said, and like a
- 38:33Speaker 4: lot of people have said, you know, it would have
- 38:35Speaker 4: spoke volumes.
- 38:37Speaker 3: For us to you know, wouldn't it have been nice
- 38:40Speaker 3: if jd.
- 38:40Speaker 4: Vance could say at the end of the weekend, Hey,
- 38:43Speaker 4: you know, I went to Vermont, and I know that
- 38:45Speaker 4: eighty five percent of the people are against me and Vermont.
- 38:48Speaker 4: But they treated us with respect and we had a
- 38:51Speaker 4: fantastic time.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Right They let me, They let me get out of
- 38:55Speaker 2: the car and put my ski boots on and enjoy
- 38:59Speaker 2: the mountain. Do you do you know, do you know
- 39:03Speaker 2: anything about the actual skiing for what it was. Where
- 39:08Speaker 2: were were they able to you know, did they close
- 39:13Speaker 2: down the trails that they were on?
- 39:15Speaker 4: Do you know? Do you know? I don't know, and
- 39:17Speaker 4: I haven't heard anything about it. I haven't even looked
- 39:19Speaker 4: into it, but I doubt they did.
- 39:22Speaker 3: They don't. I don't think they usually do that. They did,
- 39:24Speaker 3: you know, there's all there's often celebrities that come to
- 39:26Speaker 3: thever Moont and go.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Skiing, and sure, and and I think I think that,
- 39:32Speaker 4: you know, they do their best to just make sure.
- 39:34Speaker 4: I mean, you know, their secret service. I'm sure he
- 39:36Speaker 4: is out there on the skis with them too. Sure
- 39:38Speaker 4: you know, they're all doing their thing. But I don't
- 39:42Speaker 4: think the resorts do too much to to you know,
- 39:46Speaker 4: close off the trails or anything. I think it's you know,
- 39:50Speaker 4: they try to make it as normal a situation as possible.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Yeah, this is this is gonna be uh. I think
- 40:00Speaker 2: that this is And I don't want to spend the
- 40:04Speaker 2: whole week talking about about this. I mean obviously a
- 40:08Speaker 2: Monday morning, but I think this, this story is just
- 40:13Speaker 2: going to continue to fuel its own fire, and I
- 40:16Speaker 2: think it's going to pick up more momentum and I
- 40:19Speaker 2: think it's I think I think VPR and other outlets
- 40:23Speaker 2: are going to be talking about this all week.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Yeah, probably, you know, And it's tough because I'm sure
- 40:33Speaker 4: that there are plenty of people on you know, the
- 40:36Speaker 4: far left that will be you know, super happy about
- 40:39Speaker 4: all the press that that they'll get for this, and
- 40:42Speaker 4: and great, but you.
- 40:43Speaker 3: Know they're preaching to the choir.
- 40:44Speaker 4: I mean, everybody already knows that Vermont is very far
- 40:47Speaker 4: left with national politics, uh, you know, not so much
- 40:52Speaker 4: with local ones, especially outside sad In County.
- 40:55Speaker 2: But you know, even Phil Scott put something now.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Well, Phil Scott's a classy guy, you know.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Saying just let the guy have his vacation time with
- 41:07Speaker 2: his family, right.
- 41:09Speaker 3: And Phil Scott, you know, is just you know, he's
- 41:12Speaker 3: like a lot of us.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Where like, you know, he made it clear that he
- 41:15Speaker 4: didn't vote for for Donald Trump, but you know, but
- 41:20Speaker 4: like you know, but Phil Scott is a classy guy
- 41:23Speaker 4: and he said it right. He you know, again, Phil
- 41:26Speaker 4: Scott has taken the high road and he and you know,
- 41:29Speaker 4: he said, you know, just let.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Him be here with his family.
- 41:33Speaker 4: You know, this is not a political event, and that
- 41:36Speaker 4: is I was so happy to see that.
- 41:38Speaker 3: I found I found.
- 41:39Speaker 4: That yesterday last night when I was when I was
- 41:43Speaker 4: perusing the internet, and and I just I felt like,
- 41:48Speaker 4: you know, again, we can be proud of our governor here.
- 41:51Speaker 3: You know, he's a good man.
- 41:54Speaker 2: You know. I overheard some some folks talking over the
- 42:00Speaker 2: weekend and one of the people just kept coming back
- 42:05Speaker 2: with the same thing, which was, I know, whatever, it
- 42:13Speaker 2: was this ski trip. It was this ski trip. They
- 42:18Speaker 2: were there on vacation, they were there for leisure. I know,
- 42:23Speaker 2: I know, I know, but they just wanted to ski, right.
- 42:32Speaker 3: And that's it. That's it.
- 42:33Speaker 4: I mean, that is what this comes down to. You
- 42:36Speaker 4: know that this was a personal excursion with his family.
- 42:41Speaker 4: This was not an official business, you know.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's so much there's so much contentiousness here
- 42:52Speaker 2: with with so many people.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Yeah, and I get it.
- 42:56Speaker 2: You know, we've got to look beyond We've got to
- 42:58Speaker 2: look beyond stuff and just say it was the ski trip.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that's it.
- 43:06Speaker 4: I realized people are angry about a lot of these
- 43:09Speaker 4: things that are going on. I mean, like you know,
- 43:12Speaker 4: you know the whole doge at Musk thing, and and
- 43:15Speaker 4: you know jd. Vance is a polarizing character. Uh, you know,
- 43:18Speaker 4: there's a lot of national issues that people are rightly
- 43:21Speaker 4: so very angry about and very fired up. But we
- 43:27Speaker 4: have to step back, Like I said, you know, you know,
- 43:30Speaker 4: we've got problems in this country. And I'm sure even
- 43:33Speaker 4: in Vermont where people are, they they get angry about
- 43:37Speaker 4: schools and they'll they'll they'll show up at school board
- 43:40Speaker 4: meetings or and treat people really badly.
- 43:43Speaker 3: Or but worse yet, they will they will accost.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Teachers when they see them out in you know, in
- 43:49Speaker 4: the community, and it's just not appropriate.
- 43:52Speaker 3: It's like, you don't do that.
- 43:54Speaker 2: You know, you were raised by some seriously old school Verononors,
- 44:03Speaker 2: your grand your grandparents.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 44:06Speaker 4: I mean, you know, my grandparents were in their seventies
- 44:08Speaker 4: and eighties when I was a kid. You know, fortunately
- 44:12Speaker 4: they lasted until I was about fifteen.
- 44:14Speaker 2: But like, but would they have said to you, would
- 44:18Speaker 2: they have said to you Newton, shut your mouth and
- 44:22Speaker 2: either snap on your skis and get and get skiing,
- 44:26Speaker 2: or get in your car and just give the man
- 44:29Speaker 2: some some privacy, not get off this behavior as shit.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Absolutely my use that word. But but but yes, she uh,
- 44:40Speaker 3: you know, I can I can.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Imagine my grandmother saying, you know what, when someone's on
- 44:44Speaker 4: vacation with their children, they're on personal time, right, and
- 44:49Speaker 4: there's a difference between potical time.
- 44:52Speaker 2: But you still have a voice where you can. You
- 44:55Speaker 2: can get on your own social media platform. God bless
- 44:59Speaker 2: god less the fact that we have that outlet and
- 45:03Speaker 2: exercise your opinion there. But yeah, man, I.
- 45:07Speaker 4: Mean there's so many ways these days to get your
- 45:10Speaker 4: voice out, like you.
- 45:11Speaker 3: Know, trying to trying to.
- 45:14Speaker 4: Haven't you know you're not going to have any impact
- 45:16Speaker 4: on JD Vance by doing this, sure, you know, aside
- 45:20Speaker 4: from ruining his VAKA.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Well did he leave did he leave early? Did he
- 45:26Speaker 2: leave Vermont early?
- 45:27Speaker 3: I don't think so. I think I saw something. I
- 45:31Speaker 3: haven't heavily researched the whole situation.
- 45:33Speaker 4: But I think I saw something on CIX last night
- 45:36Speaker 4: that that his plane had pulled out of Burlington on
- 45:38Speaker 4: Sunday evening, which was probably when when it.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Was supposed to.
- 45:42Speaker 4: So that's probably fine, But they did, you know, they
- 45:45Speaker 4: did have to change his lodging arrangements so they could
- 45:48Speaker 4: put him in an undisclosed location out of a matter
- 45:51Speaker 4: of safety concerns, And that's just that doesn't look good
- 45:55Speaker 4: for a hospitality state at all.
- 45:58Speaker 3: It just doesn't.
- 46:00Speaker 2: I wonder what the Tourism Department is saying here on
- 46:05Speaker 2: this Monday morning as we get back to work. I wonder, Well,
- 46:11Speaker 2: but I haven't.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Checked their website, so.
- 46:14Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 46:15Speaker 3: But but you know, it's it's a tricky game.
- 46:21Speaker 4: I mean, I you know, I know people are angry,
- 46:24Speaker 4: and they're fired up, and rightfully so.
- 46:26Speaker 3: But I really think that, you know, we need.
- 46:29Speaker 4: To pull back on the angry rhetoric, and we need
- 46:35Speaker 4: to separate the difference between personal time and professional time.
- 46:42Speaker 3: I firmly believe that, and I think that's what this
- 46:45Speaker 3: is all about.
- 46:46Speaker 4: You know, I can't imagine, you know, you know, I
- 46:51Speaker 4: can't imagine being rude to a local legislator.
- 46:54Speaker 3: When he's out in public, going to the post office
- 46:56Speaker 3: or something.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I just know that old school Vermont
- 47:03Speaker 2: values right there.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Well, yes, exactly, you know.
- 47:06Speaker 4: I mean, my great great great great great grandfather was
- 47:11Speaker 4: one of the first settlers of Bridgewater, Vermont, right and like,
- 47:15Speaker 4: and you know, we go back a long way here
- 47:17Speaker 4: and like, but I got to tell you, like, I'm
- 47:20Speaker 4: way more of an old Vermont you know. How there's
- 47:22Speaker 4: this debate between the New Vermont and the Old Vermont.
- 47:25Speaker 4: I remember reading this thing in seven Days back when
- 47:28Speaker 4: Phil Scott was running the last time, and I forgot
- 47:32Speaker 4: who the challenger was, but I think it was somebody
- 47:35Speaker 4: from either like Middle Barrier Shitting County and and you know,
- 47:43Speaker 4: they had this article about, you know, the New Vermont
- 47:46Speaker 4: versus the Old Vermont.
- 47:47Speaker 3: And I'm way more old Vermont. I mean, that's the
- 47:50Speaker 3: way I am.
- 47:52Speaker 4: But and I'm not apologizing for it, but yeah, I
- 47:58Speaker 4: think that that we've got to just we got to
- 48:00Speaker 4: just be kind to people.
- 48:03Speaker 3: And I'm not saying you've got to be kind of JD.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Vance when he's working or when he's doing a political
- 48:08Speaker 4: event or so. There's you know, some online forum where
- 48:11Speaker 4: you want to vent your frustrations and get your information
- 48:14Speaker 4: and your message out.
- 48:16Speaker 3: Great, but.
- 48:19Speaker 4: Let the guy have a family vacation at Sugar Bush,
- 48:22Speaker 4: because that's what Vermont does. We welcome people and we
- 48:27Speaker 4: provide them with a fine vacation experience.
- 48:31Speaker 3: That's what we do. That is our primary product here,
- 48:35Speaker 3: you know.
- 48:36Speaker 4: And you know, I'm in the wedding industry, right and
- 48:39Speaker 4: we you know, even the wedding industry is part of
- 48:41Speaker 4: the tourism industry. We wouldn't have people coming to Vermont
- 48:45Speaker 4: in droves to get married, which we do have, if
- 48:49Speaker 4: we didn't have the tourism industry. It's all part of
- 48:51Speaker 4: the tourism industry. It's just just as much as skiing is. Yeah, well,
- 48:57Speaker 4: and yeah, and all of this, you know, is what
- 49:01Speaker 4: enables us as a state to have an economy that
- 49:06Speaker 4: allows us to keep our lands open. It keeps our
- 49:09Speaker 4: farms going, people doing agritourism and stuff.
- 49:12Speaker 3: And of course it's not it's it's not. It's not
- 49:16Speaker 3: the silver bullet that solves all of our problems.
- 49:18Speaker 4: But you know, yeah, we've got issues we got we
- 49:23Speaker 4: got education funding we can't seem to tackle yet.
- 49:25Speaker 3: But but you know, it.
- 49:27Speaker 4: Is a fantastic industry that enables Vermont to be the
- 49:33Speaker 4: beautiful place that it.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Is, and it enables us as Vermontors to be here.
- 49:38Speaker 4: And even if you don't work directly in the tourism industry,
- 49:41Speaker 4: you are dramatically impacted by it. There's plenty of people
- 49:44Speaker 4: in Chittenham County who work in tech and all this
- 49:47Speaker 4: other stuff that's over there in chittn In County that's
- 49:49Speaker 4: less tourism driven, but you know, it doesn't take long
- 49:53Speaker 4: before you get if you start to look at the
- 49:56Speaker 4: impact of tourism, you know, you can see maybe one
- 50:01Speaker 4: or two degrees back that that without tourism in Vermont,
- 50:05Speaker 4: even Chittenhan County would be a hurting unit.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to ask you before well so well
- 50:12Speaker 2: said Newt. I want to ask you before we skip here.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Trump is ordering the Commerce Department to probe international lumber markets.
- 50:24Speaker 2: And I know that this is a topic that is
- 50:30Speaker 2: probably raising your eyebrows along with many others that he
- 50:35Speaker 2: is considering this twenty five percent global tariff on lumber
- 50:40Speaker 2: and wood imports, Canada being our our neighbor.
- 50:45Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, and Canada produces I think, you know, is
- 50:49Speaker 4: it the majority or just like forty's it's.
- 50:52Speaker 3: The majority, That's what I thought, and I have.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Just I am not. I have just learned this not
- 51:00Speaker 2: long ago. I think it was Dave Horner that that
- 51:04Speaker 2: got on me about it, and he's like, yo, man,
- 51:07Speaker 2: Canada is like they're huge.
- 51:09Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And that's you know, it's going to affect
- 51:14Speaker 4: everybody who's you know, you talk about everyone, period, because
- 51:18Speaker 4: anyone who rents a house, rents an apartment, buying a house,
- 51:22Speaker 4: building a house.
- 51:24Speaker 3: You know, lumber prices affect all of these things.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Well, this is you know, and this is beyond. Hey,
- 51:33Speaker 2: we need a new deck. Our deck looks shitty. Let's
- 51:37Speaker 2: put a new deck up esthetically and functionally. It's it's
- 51:41Speaker 2: something that we've wanted to do. There's a difference between
- 51:45Speaker 2: that and holy shit, our roof is leaking and we
- 51:50Speaker 2: are we we have repairs that need to be made
- 51:54Speaker 2: and the roof is much worse than we thought it is,
- 51:57Speaker 2: and we need a lot of work done here with
- 51:59Speaker 2: a lot and.
- 52:00Speaker 4: Maybe it's been leaking and there's structural problems. So you're
- 52:03Speaker 4: going to have to buy some lumber to put up
- 52:05Speaker 4: some new two by six's and and get that thing solid, right,
- 52:09Speaker 4: And here we are twenty five percent tariffs, and that's
- 52:14Speaker 4: that's you know, it's not like Trump says that, you know,
- 52:17Speaker 4: businesses are going to pay these tariffs.
- 52:19Speaker 3: Businesses aren't going to pay these serffs.
- 52:21Speaker 4: Sure, businesses will will pay the increased cost of their lumber,
- 52:25Speaker 4: and then they will increase the cost to the people that.
- 52:27Speaker 3: Are buying the lumber. That's the way it is. Everybody
- 52:30Speaker 3: knows this. I mean, Trump can see what he wants.
- 52:32Speaker 4: But you know the vast majority of Americans are smart
- 52:36Speaker 4: enough to figure out that, Like you know, uh, supply
- 52:39Speaker 4: and demand is going to dictate that. Like you know,
- 52:42Speaker 4: if you if you, if you need lumber, you're going
- 52:45Speaker 4: to pay what the supply is asking for that lumber
- 52:49Speaker 4: because you need the lumber. We can't produce enough lumber
- 52:53Speaker 4: to compete with Canada here, you know. I mean, they've
- 52:57Speaker 4: got massive forest reserves in Canada. And and even even
- 53:02Speaker 4: if we could, we don't have the infrastructure in place
- 53:07Speaker 4: to do it. You know, there aren't the sawmills and stuff,
- 53:11Speaker 4: and and there's regulations on.
- 53:13Speaker 3: All this stuff too. But you know, it's it's it's
- 53:18Speaker 3: gonna be a problem. It really is.
- 53:22Speaker 4: So and you know, not only in costs of things,
- 53:26Speaker 4: but uh, you know, once once the costs go up,
- 53:30Speaker 4: you've got inflation again. And and as inflation goes up,
- 53:36Speaker 4: the only way the Fed can keep the inflation somewhat
- 53:38Speaker 4: in check is by increasing interest rates again.
- 53:42Speaker 3: And then everyone who's.
- 53:43Speaker 4: Got debt, unless it's fixed, if it's fixed debt, fixed
- 53:48Speaker 4: rate mortgage or something, then you're you know, they might
- 53:52Speaker 4: be able to, you know, get by with just keeping
- 53:56Speaker 4: paying their mortgage, but they're not gonna be able to
- 53:57Speaker 4: go out and get a new.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Mortgage at that same low rate.
- 54:00Speaker 4: And so then they're not going to want to sell
- 54:04Speaker 4: their house. And you know, everything ends up being more
- 54:08Speaker 4: expensive and it becomes costly, you know, and anyone who's
- 54:14Speaker 4: got debt that's that's variable rate, like credit cards or
- 54:18Speaker 4: variable rate mortgage or.
- 54:21Speaker 3: You know, sometimes car loans are that way. It's it's
- 54:25Speaker 3: just not going.
- 54:26Speaker 4: To be good because all the all that stuff goes
- 54:29Speaker 4: up and it makes it more expensive and really difficult
- 54:33Speaker 4: for people who are on the edge financially, you know.
- 54:37Speaker 3: And there's a lot of her monitors who are on
- 54:39Speaker 3: the edge.
- 54:40Speaker 4: I mean, you know, there's a lot of folks in
- 54:42Speaker 4: Vermont who don't make huge money and have, you know,
- 54:47Speaker 4: lots of disposable income and they don't worry about debt.
- 54:51Speaker 4: There's there's plenty of her monners who are not in
- 54:53Speaker 4: that boat.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Yeah, man, uh, thanks for coming on, buddy. I know you,
- 55:01Speaker 2: along with so many of us, are looking forward to
- 55:04Speaker 2: warmer weather. We've got to by midweek this week, we're
- 55:08Speaker 2: talking near fifty degrees with rain and now concerns of
- 55:12Speaker 2: ice jams and flooding and oh crap, thirteen thirteen below
- 55:18Speaker 2: at my house this morning.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it was cold last night.
- 55:23Speaker 2: So yeah, we're gonna snap here. You know, I don't
- 55:26Speaker 2: know if this is the January thaw a little bit
- 55:28Speaker 2: late or what the deal is, but sap, SAP's going
- 55:33Speaker 2: to be running, and I know that you're looking forward
- 55:37Speaker 2: to getting some of your your antique cars out of
- 55:40Speaker 2: the out of the shadow.
- 55:42Speaker 3: It's coming, Spring's coming.
- 55:44Speaker 2: There's hope.
- 55:45Speaker 3: Oh, there's hope.
- 55:46Speaker 4: I mean, you know, hey, we're in March now, where
- 55:49Speaker 4: the light is clearly glowing at the end of the tunnel. Yeah,
- 55:52Speaker 4: and you know, it's tough because like March is often
- 55:55Speaker 4: the snowiest month. Sure, but at least the temperatures start
- 56:00Speaker 4: to come up during the day, you know, you know,
- 56:02Speaker 4: it gets cold at night. We get these crystal clear
- 56:04Speaker 4: blue sky days like the one we have today where
- 56:07Speaker 4: you know, all that there's no clouds to keep the
- 56:09Speaker 4: heat in.
- 56:10Speaker 3: So like we just get freezing.
- 56:12Speaker 4: Cold at night, but during the day things start to
- 56:15Speaker 4: get nice out. It's when you you know, if you
- 56:18Speaker 4: go skiing, you see someone you know in a T shirt. Yeah,
- 56:21Speaker 4: and uh, you know, by the by late March especially boy,
- 56:25Speaker 4: it's you know, forty five degrees during the day, even
- 56:27Speaker 4: if it's cold at night.
- 56:28Speaker 3: And that's what makes the saffron.
- 56:30Speaker 2: So it's the angle of the sun. It's it's just
- 56:33Speaker 2: a little bit higher in the sky, which yeah, not complain.
- 56:36Speaker 3: About, makes a huge difference in the way we feel.
- 56:39Speaker 4: I think, you know, it's uh, it's uh, yes, it's beautiful.
- 56:46Speaker 4: I love this time of year because like the light
- 56:48Speaker 4: is there at the end of the tunnel, and and
- 56:50Speaker 4: by the end of March we'll start to feel like spring.
- 56:53Speaker 4: And you know, I mean spring comes late in Vermont.
- 56:56Speaker 4: You know, it's funny, like you know, it's funny, like
- 56:58Speaker 4: the what where's the the groundhog?
- 57:03Speaker 2: Phil, Tony Phil.
- 57:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's Tony Phil.
- 57:05Speaker 4: Yes, in Pennsylvania, they come out in mid February and
- 57:09Speaker 4: they're like, oh, it's gonna be you know, so much
- 57:11Speaker 4: more winter. But like to them, spring is like at
- 57:14Speaker 4: the end of February. Sure, that's not necessarily the way
- 57:17Speaker 4: it is here.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Six more weeks of winter, we get ten more weeks
- 57:21Speaker 2: of winter. No matter what the groundhog says, yes exactly,
- 57:25Speaker 2: the thing should be shot.
- 57:29Speaker 3: Well, he's a cute little Groundhog's just he's just wrong.
- 57:34Speaker 4: Raby's probably you know, maybe there's brainworm or something.
- 57:38Speaker 3: Maybe that's why listen.
- 57:39Speaker 2: I hope that you're going to get out to a
- 57:41Speaker 2: Vermont Mountaineers baseball game with me over at Recreation Field
- 57:45Speaker 2: in Montpellier this summer. Brian Gallagher, the president, the president
- 57:49Speaker 2: of the team and CEO, was just on the air
- 57:53Speaker 2: with me a few days ago and we're just you know,
- 57:56Speaker 2: Grapefruit League action is going on down south in Florida.
- 57:59Speaker 2: I mean, we're we're just excited and we got a
- 58:03Speaker 2: lot of stuff to look forward to.
- 58:04Speaker 4: Man. Yeah, man, oh, there's so much to do in
- 58:07Speaker 4: Vermont in the summer.
- 58:08Speaker 3: It's just it's wonderful, you know. And you know with
- 58:12Speaker 3: spring coming, we got to hit some sugar houses. Are
- 58:14Speaker 3: limb Laws opening.
- 58:15Speaker 2: You know about e fact, it was just talking with
- 58:17Speaker 2: Bryce lim Law this morning. It's funny that you mentioned that.
- 58:22Speaker 2: And yeah, they're they're going to be collecting, not they're
- 58:26Speaker 2: going to be collecting here by middle end of the
- 58:29Speaker 2: of this week, but not yet boiling yet. They're they're
- 58:32Speaker 2: still they need to collect a little bit more before
- 58:34Speaker 2: they boil.
- 58:35Speaker 4: Do you know, if they're doing their weekend breakfast that
- 58:37Speaker 4: they at one time were doing.
- 58:39Speaker 2: I don't know, but I'm gonna find out for damn sure,
- 58:42Speaker 2: and I'll let you know.
- 58:44Speaker 3: Excellent. Yeah, man, like I love sugar in season. It's
- 58:48Speaker 3: just it's such a great Vermont tradition.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Getting out of those sugar houses and supporting them is fantastic.
- 58:55Speaker 2: We should mention to all of the folks down in
- 58:57Speaker 2: Massachusetts and Connecticut points south that if you would like
- 59:04Speaker 2: us to mail you some sugar on snow, we will
- 59:09Speaker 2: do that. We will do that, but it might be
- 59:12Speaker 2: a little messy on your end when you receive it.
- 59:16Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that that might be the problem, and therefore
- 59:19Speaker 4: you should come up here and get it fresh.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Exactly beautiful right there. That was beautiful?
- 59:25Speaker 3: Yeah, perfect. Yeah, Well thanks for the setup. You know
- 59:28Speaker 3: I would have the setup, it wouldn't have work.
- 59:32Speaker 2: Listen, buddy, Uh, let's get you in here soon, okay.
- 59:36Speaker 4: Yeah, man, let's let's do that very soon. And spring
- 59:39Speaker 4: has come in. We got to get the car, the
- 59:40Speaker 4: cars and trucks out of the barns.
- 59:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I got I got a new carburetor for my
- 59:45Speaker 2: seventy six. Maybe you can help me put that in.
- 59:48Speaker 4: I wonder you said you bought a new carburetor, but
- 59:50Speaker 4: I wasn't sure if it was for the truck or
- 59:52Speaker 4: for the for the motorcycle.
- 59:53Speaker 2: No, truck, it's for the truck.
- 59:55Speaker 4: Yeah wow, well good will it solve any problems?
- 59:59Speaker 3: I assume?
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Oh very much? So yes, yeah, I can't wait. I
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: can't wait, man, Thanks Nudy, stay well brother, all right,
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: doc you soon. Our community calendar this morning is brought
