1:36
Speaker 3: Wednesday edition of the show looks like about another day
1:39
Speaker 3: or so of the heat today, impossibly tomorrow, maybe some
1:42
Speaker 3: severe weathering. It's really interesting because yesterday I was driving
1:44
Speaker 3: home yesterday afternoon and get to about westbound sixty four
1:49
Speaker 3: at about Institute and you know where the traffic is
1:51
Speaker 3: delayed there anyway where they're doing whatever, and so I'm
1:56
Speaker 3: delayed there a little bit and it just comes an
1:58
Speaker 3: absolute day, I mean pouring, pouring the rain for about
2:04
Speaker 3: two minutes. And by the time we got moving and
2:06
Speaker 3: I got to let's say, Saint Albans exit Winfield exit,
2:08
Speaker 3: I don't think it rained at all. It's just that's
2:10
Speaker 3: just kind of the weather pattern that we're in right now.
2:12
Speaker 3: But they say it's gonna break and we're actually gonna
2:14
Speaker 3: have a really really nice weekend. Good news on Friday night.
2:17
Speaker 3: The way it looks right now for Live on the Levee.
2:19
Speaker 3: We'll talk to Jim Strawn about that on Friday. So
2:21
Speaker 3: enough about the weather. Coming up, there is a new
2:23
Speaker 3: director of Festival for Charleston named is Zach Harold. And
2:27
Speaker 3: if you have been a student of journalism or you've
2:31
Speaker 3: consumed any journalism, you know the name is Zach Carro,
2:33
Speaker 3: a long time journalist. Well, he's the new director Festival.
2:36
Speaker 3: He's going to join us coming up a little bit
2:37
Speaker 3: later on the show. Plus we're going to get some
2:39
Speaker 3: several things in the news as well. And as always,

2:56
Speaker 3: A good morning, sir, and welcome to the show.
2:58
Speaker 5: Good morning, Dave, are you.
2:59
Speaker 3: I'm doing find you. I have to forgive me because
3:00
Speaker 3: sometimes with me doing this show in Metro News Midday,
3:03
Speaker 3: I get my mornings and afternoons mixed up. So I'm
3:05
Speaker 3: just gonna have to start saying hello because i always
3:07
Speaker 3: get it wrong. It's good morning when I'm on this show,
3:10
Speaker 3: it's good afternoon when I'm on that show. And also
3:12
Speaker 3: we have with us Deputy Chief Brian Griggs. All right,
3:15
Speaker 3: appreciate both of you for being here today. Chief Hold
3:18
Speaker 3: to start with you, the problems at the Dunbar Police
3:22
Speaker 3: Department have been very well documented, but that's not really
3:24
Speaker 3: why you're here today. Other than you, there are folks
3:28
Speaker 3: like yourself, you're deputy here that are trying to create
3:30
Speaker 3: a new culture there with the dun Part Police Department.
3:34
Speaker 3: You talked about a little bit with us when we
3:36
Speaker 3: had you on Metro News Midday a week or so ago.
3:39
Speaker 3: Talk about this culture that you're trying to create.
3:41
Speaker 5: What you're trying to change the whole mindset at the
3:46
Speaker 5: More Police Department, excuse me, to make sure that the
3:50
Speaker 5: guys are held accountable for their actions. And you know
3:52
Speaker 5: it starts from the bottom up. You know, obviously it
3:55
Speaker 5: starts from the top down. Actually, myself and Deputy Chief Greggs,
3:59
Speaker 5: we hold our ove to the same standard as we
4:01
Speaker 5: expect our officers to act, and you know, their actions
4:04
Speaker 5: will have consequences, and that's what we're trying to get
4:07
Speaker 5: that mindset, to show those guys that you could still
4:10
Speaker 5: do good, solid police work the right way, and it's
4:14
Speaker 5: just so you do it the right way, and that's
4:15
Speaker 5: what we're trying to change down there.
4:17
Speaker 3: Talk about your background as a police officer.
4:19
Speaker 5: I started with the Charleston Police Department back in nineteen
4:22
Speaker 5: ninety five. I worked my way up from the ranks
4:25
Speaker 5: from probationary patrolman always up to the deputy Chief of Police,
4:28
Speaker 5: and after twenty nine years and twenty one days there,
4:31
Speaker 5: I retired last September. I was retired about fifteen days.
4:36
Speaker 5: I was that long, huh? I was, yeah, a long time,
4:38
Speaker 5: you know, asked my wife. She'll tell you. The police
4:41
Speaker 5: chief position came open in Dunbar. I applied for it,
4:44
Speaker 5: and after the interview process down there, the mayor and
4:47
Speaker 5: city council decided that I was the fit for the
4:49
Speaker 5: job and I got hired sworn in October seventh of
4:53
Speaker 5: last year. So I've been there a little over nine
4:54
Speaker 5: months now.
4:54
Speaker 3: What was it originally about being a police officer anywhere
4:58
Speaker 3: that made you go into this field? John?
5:00
Speaker 5: You know, I think looking back, I've always been the
5:03
Speaker 5: type of person that have always liked to help people
5:05
Speaker 5: that couldn't help themselves, you know, And it's really the
5:08
Speaker 5: sense of serve and protect, And it's more the serving
5:11
Speaker 5: side of it, helping people and giving people hope and
5:15
Speaker 5: a chance that things can be better and changed. So
5:19
Speaker 5: that's the biggest thing, and.
5:21
Speaker 3: We talked about that changed a little bit. As I said,
5:22
Speaker 3: the problem has been well documented. We don't need to
5:24
Speaker 3: necessarily rehash them. Their lawsuits, money paid out. One of
5:27
Speaker 3: the officers in question that centered the controversies now left
5:30
Speaker 3: the department. But from this point you're just trying to
5:32
Speaker 3: move on.
5:33
Speaker 5: Yeah. After you know, after starting back nine months ago
5:38
Speaker 5: and kind of rebuilding, things has gotten a lot better.
5:42
Speaker 5: You know, like I said earlier, when guys actions and
5:47
Speaker 5: beliefs are and their consequences to their actions, they had
5:52
Speaker 5: two choices, you know, follow what we wanted to do
5:54
Speaker 5: the right way, or you know, they had to go
5:56
Speaker 5: somewhere else, and you know, some of them chose to
5:59
Speaker 5: go somewhere else and now you know, the mindset and
6:02
Speaker 5: uh and the model down at Numbar has changed to
6:05
Speaker 5: a positive way.
6:07
Speaker 3: De Wuty Chief Griggs want to ask you what was
6:09
Speaker 3: that made you want to become a police officer?
6:12
Speaker 5: Same.
6:13
Speaker 3: I just wanted to help my community.
6:14
Speaker 6: And you know, I at a job bear in high
6:17
Speaker 6: school really with a trooper, and you know, I thought
6:21
Speaker 6: that was the best way to to help your community.
6:24
Speaker 3: I mean, I think that's you know, in order to
6:27
Speaker 3: do I've always said that there are these certain professions
6:31
Speaker 3: that you really got to love to want to do
6:34
Speaker 3: it well. And I think police officer, any emergency service official, doctor, nurse, teacher,
6:39
Speaker 3: you know those those are some of those. You've got
6:42
Speaker 3: to have a passion for it and the and the
6:44
Speaker 3: want to john to help others.
6:47
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely was a calling for me. That's something
6:50
Speaker 5: when I went to college and I went to state college.
6:52
Speaker 5: Well it's not state college anymore, but it was when
6:54
Speaker 5: I went the first time. Yeah, you know, I went
6:57
Speaker 5: into criminal justice, and it's something that that it was
6:59
Speaker 5: almost like a passion or a calling for me to
7:02
Speaker 5: want to help people and to me being a law
7:04
Speaker 5: enforcement officer in that profession was the way I wanted
7:08
Speaker 5: to get back, and that's what I did.
7:10
Speaker 3: Talking again with the folks from the Dunbar Police spar
7:12
Speaker 3: of a Dave Allen show on five eighty Live is
7:14
Speaker 3: presented in part by Generations Physical Therapy, the leading provider
7:17
Speaker 3: of outpatient PT in the Tri State for nearly thirty years,
7:20
Speaker 3: or an appointment three zero four seven six zero fifty
7:23
Speaker 3: six sixty or GENERATIONSPT dot com to find the closest
7:27
Speaker 3: location near you. All right, so how many officers do
7:29
Speaker 3: you have now on Dunbar Police spark Fully staffed?
7:32
Speaker 5: I have sixteen positions, but right now I have.
7:36
Speaker 2: Twelve.
7:37
Speaker 5: I have twelve have four vacancies right now that we're
7:39
Speaker 5: trying to feel. Like I said on the show last week,
7:42
Speaker 5: I believe that we have a hiring test coming up
7:45
Speaker 5: on September thirteenth of this year, starts at nine o'clock
7:49
Speaker 5: and we're going to hold our testing at the Dunbar
7:50
Speaker 5: Middle School and we're looking for good applicants, good solid
7:54
Speaker 5: applicants that wants to one continue with the change of
7:57
Speaker 5: Dunbar and two that wants to help the community be
8:01
Speaker 5: better and build that bridge back. Because I think the
8:03
Speaker 5: bridge between the Dunmore Police Department and the community in
8:07
Speaker 5: the city of Dunbar was fractured and we need some
8:11
Speaker 5: good candidates to help rebuild that bridge.
8:14
Speaker 3: What makes a good police officer, in your opinion.
8:17
Speaker 5: Communication skills. You've got to be able to talk to people.
8:21
Speaker 5: You know, ninety nine percent of police work is really
8:23
Speaker 5: just communication. Being able to go to a scene and
8:27
Speaker 5: get the correct information that you need for the offense
8:30
Speaker 5: that possibly occurred, but to make sure that you talk
8:33
Speaker 5: to somebody in a way that's comforting, that makes them
8:36
Speaker 5: feel that when you're talking to them that you know,
8:38
Speaker 5: because we do care. I know some people don't think
8:40
Speaker 5: we do, but we really do. And that's the biggest
8:43
Speaker 5: thing is just communication, being able to talk to people
8:46
Speaker 5: the right way.
8:46
Speaker 3: And I have interviewed so many police officers over my
8:50
Speaker 3: years of my career and one of the things that
8:52
Speaker 3: they always talk about, and this goes along with that
8:54
Speaker 3: you're saying, chief with communication, it's communication with the community
8:58
Speaker 3: as well, and not always the community members that have
9:02
Speaker 3: caused problems, just the average ordinary citizens that just want
9:05
Speaker 3: a better community.
9:06
Speaker 5: Yeah. When I first got hired down there, you know,
9:09
Speaker 5: that's my goal was, you know, when I had some
9:11
Speaker 5: slow time, is I'd drive around the city and I'd
9:15
Speaker 5: have my window down to my car and I'd wave
9:17
Speaker 5: at people. And you know, some of the reactions that
9:19
Speaker 5: I got was kind of different because I don't think
9:21
Speaker 5: they were used to having a policeman wave at them.
9:24
Speaker 5: And but then again, we're trying to build trust. And
9:27
Speaker 5: like I said last week, you know, you start with
9:29
Speaker 5: the little trust and then it gets the big trust.
9:31
Speaker 5: And that's what I'm trying to do with myself and
9:34
Speaker 5: WT Chief Griggs is doing that as well. Is you know,
9:37
Speaker 5: we got to we gotta do a total rebuild. It's
9:39
Speaker 5: almost like a football or or a basketball team where
9:42
Speaker 5: you kind of get rid of, you know, things that
9:44
Speaker 5: you need to get rid of, and you just kind
9:46
Speaker 5: of rebuild the way you want to.
9:47
Speaker 3: To use a sports analogy, people enter the transfer portal.
9:50
Speaker 5: Sort of kind of you know, sort of kind of
9:52
Speaker 5: that's about right, you know, in this day and age.
9:54
Speaker 3: Anyway, Deputy Chief Griggs, what what was it or what
9:58
Speaker 3: in your opinion I should say makes a good pleace officer?
10:00
Speaker 3: We heard what Chief said. What do you think makes
10:02
Speaker 3: a good police officer?
10:03
Speaker 6: You've got to have integrity, Uh, Unfortunately, in our line
10:06
Speaker 6: of work, you gotta do a lot of writing.
10:08
Speaker 3: So you need to have some money. People don't. And
10:10
Speaker 3: I got a lot of friends to the police officers.
10:12
Speaker 3: They I guess we were all spoiled by watching television,
10:15
Speaker 3: you know, especially Yeah, I grew up in the seventies
10:18
Speaker 3: and you saw all the cops shows from Chips and
10:20
Speaker 3: you know, start skinning hutch and whatever, and a lot
10:23
Speaker 3: of folks, I think don't realize that. At times. I
10:26
Speaker 3: never want to use the term boring, but at times
10:28
Speaker 3: it can be very routine work that you're doing.
10:30
Speaker 6: Yeah, but you know the communication skills, Like he said,
10:34
Speaker 6: you got to get the information. But it's also very
10:36
Speaker 6: important that if you want to be a police officer,
10:38
Speaker 6: if you know how to write that information or I
10:40
Speaker 6: guess in.
10:40
Speaker 3: This day and age, type type of information.
10:42
Speaker 2: That's right.
10:43
Speaker 3: What do you see primarily? And how long have you
10:45
Speaker 3: been on the job there, chief at Dunbar. Yeah, a
10:48
Speaker 3: little over nine months? Okay, a little over nine months,
10:50
Speaker 3: So I prefer to use the new chief you've actually
10:51
Speaker 3: been on the job for a while. What's what sort
10:53
Speaker 3: of what's an average day, like, what's what kind of
10:56
Speaker 3: crimes you see on a regular basis down there.
10:58
Speaker 7: You know.
10:58
Speaker 5: Right now, the biggest thing we have in Dumbar's the
11:00
Speaker 5: nuisance offenses. You know, individuals walking doing things in the
11:07
Speaker 5: middle of the night, going in people's yards, taking stuff
11:09
Speaker 5: that don't belong to them. Occasionally there's gonna be you
11:12
Speaker 5: need autos. But you know, for the most part, Dumbar
11:14
Speaker 5: is a very safe community as far as like some
11:17
Speaker 5: of the major crimes go, like murder, malicious winning and
11:20
Speaker 5: stuff like that. But it's just the noose and stuff
11:23
Speaker 5: that basically every city has. It's just that's the thing
11:25
Speaker 5: that we try to address more right now than we
11:28
Speaker 5: have in the past.
11:29
Speaker 3: All Right, So I'm going to give you an opportunity
11:31
Speaker 3: to sell if you will, because you need people and
11:34
Speaker 3: you and I talked about this on the phone last
11:36
Speaker 3: week following our interview that you did with Amandaid myself.
11:39
Speaker 3: You need people, you need officers. Tell me exactly what
11:42
Speaker 3: it is you're looking for.
11:44
Speaker 5: You know, we're looking for solid, good, communicated skill individuals,
11:51
Speaker 5: you know, and the Dunbar Police Department we offer a
11:53
Speaker 5: lot of different things as well.
11:55
Speaker 8: You know.
11:55
Speaker 5: One of the things that we offer is we have
11:57
Speaker 5: a take home con Prossy every officer on the department
12:00
Speaker 5: has a take home car.
12:02
Speaker 3: We're one of.
12:02
Speaker 5: The three or four cities in the state that has
12:05
Speaker 5: its own contract with the city and the FOP, and
12:09
Speaker 5: our probationary base salary for those probationary officers is a
12:12
Speaker 5: little over fifty thousand dollars a year, and then once
12:14
Speaker 5: you get off probation it jumps up to almost fifty
12:16
Speaker 5: five thousand dollar year, which is for the city. The
12:19
Speaker 5: size of Dunbar is very competitive with the other bigger
12:21
Speaker 5: cities and the bigger agencies around here, so that's not bad.
12:24
Speaker 5: And you know, if you're certified as an EMT, if
12:27
Speaker 5: you have a four year degree, a two year degree,
12:30
Speaker 5: or if you're a certified law enforcement instructor to the
12:33
Speaker 5: State of West Virginia, we add to your base pay
12:36
Speaker 5: as well, so you know, the more that you want
12:38
Speaker 5: to do and you want to get back to the
12:39
Speaker 5: profession and the community, you know, we pay you. We
12:42
Speaker 5: compensate you for that, which is very important as well.
12:45
Speaker 5: So that's the thing that we're trying to offer and
12:49
Speaker 5: right now we're in the works with the city to
12:52
Speaker 5: offer a sign on bonus for certified West Virginia Police
12:55
Speaker 5: officers like a lot of other agencies do around here.
12:58
Speaker 5: We're trying to figure out how much the city can
13:02
Speaker 5: can put forth towards another certified police officer, which is
13:05
Speaker 5: which is something that basically all the other cities are
13:07
Speaker 5: doing too, uh, because we have to put stay competitive.
13:11
Speaker 5: I think in the past the Sea of Dumbar went
13:15
Speaker 5: with quantity in set of quality. And that's one of
13:20
Speaker 5: the biggest things that I wanted to change is you
13:23
Speaker 5: have to be the right fit for this profession, to
13:26
Speaker 5: do it the right way, to keep the liability and
13:29
Speaker 5: the litigation down. And that's and that's what we're trying
13:31
Speaker 5: to do here.
13:32
Speaker 3: All right, now, tell us where you're going to be
13:33
Speaker 3: again for this.
13:37
Speaker 5: You could pick up a pre application online at city
13:40
Speaker 5: Hall or at the Dunbar Police station there on Leon
13:42
Speaker 5: Way at nine o'clock September thirteen, twenty twenty five at
13:47
Speaker 5: the Dunbar Middle School. If you don't fill in an
13:49
Speaker 5: application or do a pre app as fine, just show
13:52
Speaker 5: up your driver's license. We'll get your information and uh
13:56
Speaker 5: and we'll allow you to test.
13:57
Speaker 3: All right, sounds good. We may have you on between
14:00
Speaker 3: now and then to kind of remind people. How's that
14:01
Speaker 3: sound perfect. We'd love to be here all right, John
14:04
Speaker 3: Garton and also Wit Chief Grigs. Appreciate you both being here.
14:06
Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, good luck with what you're doing there
14:08
Speaker 3: in Dunbar. Appreciate you both.

16:48
Speaker 3: There's a new director of Festival and Charleston's name is
16:51
Speaker 3: Zach Harold and he joins us now. Good morning, sir,
16:53
Speaker 3: and welcome to the show.
16:54
Speaker 13: Good morning, how are you doing.
16:56
Speaker 3: I am doing fine. What made you want this jobs.
16:58
Speaker 13: Ech, Well, I'm a lifelong Canon Valley resident. I've been
17:03
Speaker 13: a fan of Festival since the beginning and saw the
17:06
Speaker 13: job open up and thought that sounds like.
17:09
Speaker 14: A lot of fun.
17:10
Speaker 3: Talk about your background.
17:13
Speaker 13: Well, started my career at the late Great Charleston Daily
17:17
Speaker 13: Mail as an education reporter. Eventually became the Life and
17:21
Speaker 13: Entertainment editor over there, and got out when the papers
17:26
Speaker 13: merged and went to West Virginia Living Magazine, where I
17:29
Speaker 13: was managing editor. And then for the last six years,
17:33
Speaker 13: I've been with the West Virginia University Extension Service doing
17:37
Speaker 13: some multimedia for them, but I'm also freelancing for all
17:41
Speaker 13: kinds of publications locally, nationally, that kind of thing.
17:45
Speaker 3: So what was it about the whole writing aspect, Because
17:48
Speaker 3: the one theme I'm seeing in your career here, Zach,
17:50
Speaker 3: is that there was always writing involved. What is it
17:55
Speaker 3: that you enjoy about being an author so much?
17:58
Speaker 13: It's just when I was in high school, I was
18:00
Speaker 13: part of the gazette flip side program where they let
18:03
Speaker 13: high schoolers right for the paper, and I got into
18:06
Speaker 13: a drag race event on a press pass and I
18:09
Speaker 13: was like, they let people do this for a job.
18:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, you're exactly right.
18:17
Speaker 13: Yeah, so that was the initial appeal. But the way
18:20
Speaker 13: that connects to festival is like, throughout my entire journalistic career,
18:24
Speaker 13: I've really been interested in supporting and uplifting the arts,
18:30
Speaker 13: you know, drawing attention to local musicians and artists and
18:34
Speaker 13: performing troops like our theater groups here in town. And
18:39
Speaker 13: this seemed like a way, this festival job seemed like
18:42
Speaker 13: a way to continue that support in a more direct way.
18:46
Speaker 3: And for those and of course festival has been around,
18:49
Speaker 3: you know, for some time, but maybe those that are
18:51
Speaker 3: listened to us for the first time or maybe aren't familiar.
18:54
Speaker 3: Explain if somebody ask you your elevator spece of exactly
18:57
Speaker 3: what festival is.
19:00
Speaker 13: Well, the tagline is a city becomes a work of art.
19:03
Speaker 13: That's a pretty good explanation for what it is. It's
19:06
Speaker 13: a festival that incorporates all different art forms, visual art, music,
19:11
Speaker 13: performing arts and scatters them around the city and ticket
19:17
Speaker 13: I mean, it's free to attend, so it's accessible for everybody.
19:20
Speaker 13: That's all interest of all, and it's just trying to bring,
19:23
Speaker 13: you know, things that maybe you wouldn't normally see in
19:26
Speaker 13: a place like Charleston, West Virginia and exposing people to
19:29
Speaker 13: that stuff. I mean some of the events that I've
19:32
Speaker 13: attended over the years, it feels like rewired my brain.
19:34
Speaker 13: I saw my first live Shakespeare play performed by this
19:38
Speaker 13: group out of Virginia for Festival, and it was like
19:42
Speaker 13: totally different experience than reading it in English class. You know,
19:46
Speaker 13: it came to life, and it's just about providing people
19:50
Speaker 13: those kind of opportunities to experience art.
19:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, there is something to be said for your exactly
19:56
Speaker 3: right of any kind of art, or whether it's a
20:01
Speaker 3: Shakespearean play, whether it's a concert or whatever, it's a
20:04
Speaker 3: lot different. Hits a lot different when you actually see
20:06
Speaker 3: it done live in.
20:07
Speaker 13: Person, Oh my god, and even more when it's like
20:11
Speaker 13: in your backyard too.
20:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. We're talking to Zach Carold, who is the
20:15
Speaker 3: new executive director of Festival, So what are your plans
20:17
Speaker 3: for Fest of All coming. It's been success all these years,
20:20
Speaker 3: but what are your plans.
20:22
Speaker 13: We just want to continue what Festival has always been
20:27
Speaker 13: known for, bringing innovative, exciting programming to Charleston, and we're
20:31
Speaker 13: really looking at expanding. I mean, the landmark event has
20:35
Speaker 13: always been a festival in the late spring, early summer.
20:39
Speaker 13: We're looking at expanding that programming year round. There's Festivefaal
20:43
Speaker 13: that's already that's been going on for several years, coming
20:45
Speaker 13: up in October, but doing more programming year round, doing
20:52
Speaker 13: some education inside local schools to bring the arts to
20:57
Speaker 13: those kids and those cam that he's outside Charleston as will,
21:03
Speaker 13: just making continuing that legacy festival but kind of pushing
21:07
Speaker 13: it a little bit further as we enter our next
21:09
Speaker 13: two decades.
21:10
Speaker 3: And you mentioned Festive Fall, and you said that's going
21:13
Speaker 3: to be coming up in October. And I know, fall
21:16
Speaker 3: and winter seem like a million years away right now
21:18
Speaker 3: because with the heat index it's one hundred and eighty
21:20
Speaker 3: eight degrees. It seems like outside. But what can you
21:24
Speaker 3: tell us? We'll have you on of course as we
21:25
Speaker 3: get closer to festival, but look ahead a little bit.
21:28
Speaker 3: What do you planning for Festive Fall?
21:30
Speaker 13: Well, you're gonna have to forgive me. I don't take
21:32
Speaker 13: the job until the fifteenth.
21:35
Speaker 3: I'm asking you a whole lot. Dann Alight.
21:37
Speaker 13: I'm sorry, I'm just not I'm not ready to speak
21:40
Speaker 13: on that yet. I got you, I got I officially started,
21:42
Speaker 13: but it's gonna I mean every year it's it's packed
21:46
Speaker 13: with you know, local vendors coming in, artists selling their stuff.
21:50
Speaker 13: It's a great place to get some early Christmas shop
21:52
Speaker 13: and done for sure.
21:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly is again. Zach Carrol is the new executive
21:56
Speaker 3: director of Festival and part of that is Festive fall.
21:59
Speaker 3: And once he's got in and got settled and the
22:01
Speaker 3: inks drying, the contract will have him. Been talking about
22:04
Speaker 3: that a little bit more. Do want to remind you
22:06
Speaker 3: that older adults will protect themselves against severe respiratory disease.
22:09
Speaker 3: Talk to your doctor about flu, COVID nineteen and RSV
22:12
Speaker 3: vaccines risk less, do more get started, vaccines not GOV
22:15
Speaker 3: paid for about the US Department of Health and Human Services.
22:18
Speaker 3: You know, there was a time. Festival has got a
22:20
Speaker 3: very unique history, and I know you're still I mean,
22:21
Speaker 3: even though you've been a part of it, you're still
22:23
Speaker 3: learning about it because you're new to the job, haven't
22:25
Speaker 3: even officially started the job yet. But it does have
22:29
Speaker 3: a very very unique and interesting history here in Charles
22:34
Speaker 3: So and there was a time, if I understand correctly,
22:36
Speaker 3: that it went on for a little bit longer. It's
22:38
Speaker 3: kind of been scaled back as many many things have.
22:41
Speaker 3: What would you like to see going forward as far
22:42
Speaker 3: as a timeline for festival a shorter, longer, What do
22:46
Speaker 3: you think?
22:47
Speaker 13: Well, you're right, it has changed over the years. I
22:49
Speaker 13: think when Larry Gross started it back in the early
22:52
Speaker 13: two thousands, it started as weekend, then expanded to a
22:55
Speaker 13: week and then it was two weeks and it's this year.
22:58
Speaker 13: It was this May into May, early June it was
23:02
Speaker 13: it was one weekend. Again, I think it's four days.
23:05
Speaker 13: But our plan is to have a week long, a
23:08
Speaker 13: week long festival, you know, late spring, early summer. When
23:13
Speaker 13: festival started, Regatta wasn't on the schedule anymore. You know,
23:17
Speaker 13: it wasn't on a high for several years. So it's
23:19
Speaker 13: like trying to find that balance working with other events
23:24
Speaker 13: in Charleston. So you know, a rising tide lifts all boats.
23:28
Speaker 13: We're not trying to compete with anybody who're just all
23:30
Speaker 13: pulling in the same direction.
23:32
Speaker 3: And you mentioned Regatta and one of the when I
23:34
Speaker 3: have the Mayor on or others from Regatta every year,
23:36
Speaker 3: it's always well, I want it to be like it
23:38
Speaker 3: was when it was over Labor Day, you know, the
23:40
Speaker 3: nine ten days around Labor Day, and I mean, you know,
23:42
Speaker 3: quite frankly everybody would like that. But Charleston is not
23:46
Speaker 3: the place that it used to be. Not the same.
23:47
Speaker 3: But it's not great.
23:49
Speaker 8: Uh.
23:49
Speaker 3: But you know, Regatta went away for a couple of
23:51
Speaker 3: years because of a lack of big time sponsorship, and
23:53
Speaker 3: luckily they were able to get some folks on board
23:56
Speaker 3: that really believed in it in order to bring it back.
23:58
Speaker 3: To Mayor ran her campaign bringing bringing Regatta back and
24:01
Speaker 3: she did so. Uh, you know, you got you gotta
24:04
Speaker 3: you gotta the crawl before you can run, as they say.
24:06
Speaker 3: And so there's an opportunity, I think, in the future
24:09
Speaker 3: for this thing to grow, because it's always been great,
24:11
Speaker 3: but there's a chance for you and others and you know,
24:13
Speaker 3: to grow it even more. I want to talk about it,
24:15
Speaker 3: and I know you're not on the job yet, but
24:17
Speaker 3: I do want to talk about volunteers, because these events,
24:20
Speaker 3: whether it's festival, whether it's the you know, the art walks,
24:23
Speaker 3: whether it's any of the great events that going in
24:25
Speaker 3: Charleston and the surrounding areas, they're not possible without volunteers.
24:29
Speaker 13: Talk about that exactly. No, The team, at first of all,
24:35
Speaker 13: is small and it's amazing that such a small team
24:39
Speaker 13: puts on such an amazing event, and we do have
24:42
Speaker 13: a very passionate and involved board of directors. But yeah,
24:46
Speaker 13: it runs on volunteers and and it's uh, it couldn't
24:52
Speaker 13: happen with it without that. So if anybody's interested in
24:54
Speaker 13: getting involved with with the arts, helping Charleston be an
24:58
Speaker 13: even cooler place in it already is definitely, hit us
25:01
Speaker 13: up and we'll put you to work.
25:03
Speaker 9: All right.
25:03
Speaker 3: Sounds good, Hey, Zach, I know that you took time
25:06
Speaker 3: out of some personal things to be with us on
25:08
Speaker 3: the show today and hit you up even before you
25:10
Speaker 3: officially you don't even know where the restroom is yet, buddy,
25:13
Speaker 3: you're just learning right now. So they showed me that
25:17
Speaker 3: you got that taken care of. All right, So when
25:18
Speaker 3: you're ready to start it, what'd you say it was
25:20
Speaker 3: August fifteenth? Is that what you said?
25:21
Speaker 13: August fifteenth?
25:22
Speaker 3: All right, we'll have you back on as we get
25:23
Speaker 3: a little bit closer, especially to Festive Fall, because we've
25:26
Speaker 3: always our company has always been a big part of
25:29
Speaker 3: all the activities going on in Charleston, particularly things like this,
25:31
Speaker 3: and so we'll have you back on and we'll talk
25:33
Speaker 3: about what I'm sure going to be a great festive
25:35
Speaker 3: fall and a great festival next year. Zach appreciated, Buddy.
25:38
Speaker 13: I sure appreciate it, all right, Zach get started.
25:40
Speaker 3: All right? Sounds good. Zach Harrold is the new executive
25:43
Speaker 3: director of Festival here in Charleston. Festive Fall happening in
25:47
Speaker 3: the month of October. And as I said, it is
25:50
Speaker 3: hard to believe. I mean, you know, it's interesting because
25:53
Speaker 3: if you follow us in social media, Chris Lawrence every
25:55
Speaker 3: morning does a photo on our social media and it's
26:00
Speaker 3: just like kind of a preview of what's coming up
26:02
Speaker 3: in the morning news. He and Jeff and Daniel and
26:05
Speaker 3: all the others that take part in the morning news.
26:07
Speaker 3: And this morning, Chris being Chris, posted a picture of
26:12
Speaker 3: the West Virginia State Capitol steps covered in snow, and
26:16
Speaker 3: he said something to the effect of only one more day. Well,
26:19
Speaker 3: it's not one more day toil snow, but it is
26:21
Speaker 3: one more day, one or two days until we actually
26:23
Speaker 3: get some cooler temperatures in here, because it's just been
26:26
Speaker 3: absolutely ridiculously hot and human with showers and thunderstorms popping up.
26:30
Speaker 3: Looks like we got that today, we got that tomorrow.
26:33
Speaker 3: But then after that we are going to get a break.
26:35
Speaker 3: And it is shaping up to be And as the
26:38
Speaker 3: folks in the Weather Service will tell you, you never want
26:40
Speaker 3: to get too ahead of yourself. It is shaping up
26:42
Speaker 3: to be an absolutely beautiful summer weekend. And that's great
26:46
Speaker 3: because there's so many activities going on. I know the
26:48
Speaker 3: Taste of Nitro is going to be going on. That's
26:51
Speaker 3: just one of the activities all over the state of
26:52
Speaker 3: West Virginia. So many things here in the Canal Valley
26:54
Speaker 3: going on as well. So I'll say this, get through today,
26:58
Speaker 3: get through tomorrow, because by the time the weekend rolls around,
27:01
Speaker 3: it looks like we are going to have some great,
27:03
Speaker 3: great weather. Hey, the rest of the show is yours.

30:12
Speaker 3: you to another someone who is doing great things in
30:15
Speaker 3: the community. This is a feature that we started when
30:18
Speaker 3: we started doing the show back in March, where we
30:20
Speaker 3: just basically rely on you to tell us who's doing
30:24
Speaker 3: good stuff in your community across the greatest State of
30:26
Speaker 3: West Virginia. Last week we went up to wheeling and
30:29
Speaker 3: talked to some folks that were going above and I
30:31
Speaker 3: mean that flood recovery effort in Ohio County has just
30:35
Speaker 3: been off the charts. But there's one lady in particular
30:37
Speaker 3: that has just done a great job. We featured her
30:40
Speaker 3: last week. We featured people from all over and this
30:42
Speaker 3: show's in the Kanaal Valley Metro News Midday state wide.
30:45
Speaker 3: But doesn't mean we can't honor people here in the
30:47
Speaker 3: kanaw Valley. So if you got somebody you want to
30:49
Speaker 3: honor for that, you can drop us an email midday
30:51
Speaker 3: at wvmetronews dot com. It's midday at WV metronews dot com.
30:55
Speaker 3: Reach out to me on social media and we will
30:57
Speaker 3: get that person recognized. While we do it every Wednesday
31:00
Speaker 3: and today, don't want to spoil it for you, but
31:03
Speaker 3: we are going to talk to a gentleman who is
31:05
Speaker 3: actually from right here in the Kanawha Valley that was
31:08
Speaker 3: recommended to us, who has done a just a great
31:11
Speaker 3: great job of doing things with veterans and particularly Vietnam
31:16
Speaker 3: era veterans. And you know that subject is near and
31:18
Speaker 3: dear to my heart because with my late father, and
31:21
Speaker 3: so he's going to be in the spotlight during the
31:23
Speaker 3: one o'clock hour today Metro News Midday with thirteen News

31:35
Speaker 3: is going to be stopping by Jill Garin from The
31:38
Speaker 3: Dirty Birds is here. The Birds are in the middle
31:41
Speaker 3: of a big homestand and we're going to turn our
31:44
Speaker 3: attention though to this Saturday night over at Goldmart Ballpark,
31:47
Speaker 3: because it is eighties nights at the ballpark, and our guys, Shockley,
31:53
Speaker 3: he of all of the long flowing locks, is going
31:56
Speaker 3: to be throwing out the first pitch. And I got
31:58
Speaker 3: to get a hold of Shockley and see I want
32:01
Speaker 3: him to come in on the show with Jill tomorrow.
32:03
Speaker 3: So mister shock if you're listening right now, consider this
32:06
Speaker 3: your invite. I'd like to have you on the show
32:08
Speaker 3: with Gil with Jill tomorrow because again it's eighties night
32:12
Speaker 3: over to ballpark and as I mentioned I mentioned earlier,
32:15
Speaker 3: the weather is going to be fantastic this weekend, so
32:17
Speaker 3: we're going to have all kinds of eighties fun at
32:19
Speaker 3: Gomart Ballpark and Shockley from a sister station ninety eight
32:22
Speaker 3: seven A Mountain Wild a wonderful classic Gronk throwing out
32:25
Speaker 3: the first pitch, so they'll join us on the show tomorrow.
32:29
Speaker 3: Also this Saturday, I briefly mentioned this earlier. The Taste
32:32
Speaker 3: of Nitro is going on and our sister station to the
32:35
Speaker 3: Mountain will be broadcasting live from there Saturday. Steve Animal
32:38
Speaker 3: will be there along with the folks at Secure Net.
32:40
Speaker 3: Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro will join us
32:43
Speaker 3: to talk about that, plus your calls and text. It's
32:45
Speaker 3: all coming up on tomorrow's show. Twenty minutes Away from
32:48

33:06
Speaker 3: at wvmetronews dot com. The Parkways Authority is trying hard
33:13
Speaker 3: not to have a repeat of what happened a few
33:17
Speaker 3: months ago with all those people being stranded on the turnpike.
33:20
Speaker 3: I actually knew a few of them personally interviewed them
33:22
Speaker 3: on the air. The Parkways Authority had their meeting at
33:26
Speaker 3: Tamarak yesterday. Jeff Jenkins was there and writes about it
33:31
Speaker 3: this morning lead storywv Metronews dot com. Jeff was able
33:33
Speaker 3: to catch up with the executive director of the Authority,
33:36
Speaker 3: Chuck Smith, and mister Smith outlined basically a five step approach,
33:43
Speaker 3: which you can read for yourself over at the website.
33:46
Speaker 3: And the biggest thing that I would take away from
33:49
Speaker 3: it is simply communication. In talking and interviewing people that
33:57
Speaker 3: were trapped on the turnpike upwards of eight hours that night,
34:01
Speaker 3: it seemed that the biggest issue was indeed communication because
34:06
Speaker 3: simply put, no one knew what was going on. There
34:10
Speaker 3: was no info being given to media outlets. I mean,
34:13
Speaker 3: we have people in our newsroom twenty four hours. Television
34:17
Speaker 3: stations do as well. None of us knew what was
34:20
Speaker 3: going on. And it wasn't for lack of trying, you know.
34:26
Speaker 3: I mean, I wasn't personally working on the story, but
34:28
Speaker 3: I know Jeff and others in the news department here
34:30
Speaker 3: of the TV stations, I'm sure the newspaper was they
34:33
Speaker 3: were all trying to find out what was going on
34:34
Speaker 3: as well, and simply no communication was going out. And
34:40
Speaker 3: so that's one of the things. That's the main thing
34:43
Speaker 3: I think is that people when you travel, you know
34:48
Speaker 3: sometimes there's going to be delayed, there's going to be
34:49
Speaker 3: car wrecks, there's going to be paper there's gonna be
34:51
Speaker 3: bridge issues, which we know a lot about here in
34:53
Speaker 3: the Kanaal Valley, specifically in Charleston. But if we know
34:56
Speaker 3: what's going on, we seem to be a little bit
34:59
Speaker 3: more say okay with it, but it puts a little
35:01
Speaker 3: bit of ease. But when you're stranded, as somebody who's
35:04
Speaker 3: traveled you know, the Western Indian Turnpike countless times in
35:08
Speaker 3: my life, to be stranded in that area and you're
35:14
Speaker 3: not near anything, you don't know what's going on. After
35:17
Speaker 3: a while, unfortunately, you start writing your own stories. And
35:21
Speaker 3: in this area, there was a time, and I talked
35:23
Speaker 3: about this on the show before, there was a time
35:25
Speaker 3: when when when you left Charleston, let's say, once you
35:28
Speaker 3: get on the other side of Marmette, maybe near the
35:30
Speaker 3: first toll booth or whatever, pretty much to you got
35:33
Speaker 3: outside Beckley, you didn't have cell phone service. Well, that's
35:36
Speaker 3: changed now. You know, I'm a Verizon customer. I'm sure
35:39
Speaker 3: at and TSEs saying, wow, I have no issues at
35:41
Speaker 3: all on the turnpike now. So there's no reason why
35:44
Speaker 3: something could not have been put out on social media.
35:48
Speaker 3: There was no reason why there couldn't have been some
35:50
Speaker 3: sort of a text alert. I mean, had they communicated
35:54
Speaker 3: with media outlets like ours or the TV stations or
35:56
Speaker 3: whatever we send out texts, they too telling people what's
36:01
Speaker 3: going on. And so again I applaud mister Smith and
36:05
Speaker 3: those were saying this is where we messed up. And
36:06
Speaker 3: I will say this, they owned it. We had them
36:10
Speaker 3: on the air the day of I mean it happened
36:13
Speaker 3: Thursday night slash Friday morning. We had mister Smith on
36:16
Speaker 3: the air on that Friday and he talked about it,
36:19
Speaker 3: and he said, this is a mistake of monumental proportions.
36:22
Speaker 3: This is not going to happen again. And I really
36:25
Speaker 3: really hope that he's correct on that now. They also
36:27
Speaker 3: said that after two thousand and nine and people spent
36:30
Speaker 3: twenty hours and a snowstorm on the turnpike. But let's
36:32
Speaker 3: face it, the world has changed a lot as far
36:35
Speaker 3: as communication goes since two thousand and nine, everybody iPhones
36:39
Speaker 3: were a thing, but not everybody had them like they
36:42
Speaker 3: do now. And social media certainly wasn't what it then
36:47
Speaker 3: what it is now. It was around, but not what
36:49
Speaker 3: it is now. So communication going for a readea story
36:51
Speaker 3: for yourself over at wv metronews dot com. There was
36:55
Speaker 3: a disturbing story out yesterday. An attorney here in Charleston
37:02
Speaker 3: has been arrested on a Fugitive from Justice warrant after
37:05
Speaker 3: being accused of exposing himself to a kid in Virginia
37:08
Speaker 3: last week. James Barber, sixty five years old of Charleston,
37:11
Speaker 3: arrested yesterday at his office downtown Charleston. He was charged
37:14
Speaker 3: with exposing himself to a child under the age of fifteen,
37:18
Speaker 3: the alleged events taking place in Chesterfield County in Virginia's
37:23
Speaker 3: story posted this morning wvmetronews dot com. Marshall set to
37:28
Speaker 3: officially name the new athletic director, Gerald Harrison, at a
37:30
Speaker 3: press event today, and we'll get into that a little
37:32
Speaker 3: bit further on Metro News midday programming. Note, the new
37:35
Speaker 3: Marshall athletic director will be on talkline with the TJ
37:39
Speaker 3: and Dave tomorrow at eleven o six and related to Marshall.
37:44
Speaker 3: Do you want to tell you that one of the
37:45
Speaker 3: biggest events of summer here in Charleston has now been set.
37:49
Speaker 3: It's actually been set for some time. I just haven't
37:51
Speaker 3: got around talking about it. And it's going to be
37:52
Speaker 3: happening August twenty first at the Billina Flight School at
37:56
Speaker 3: West Virginia International Yeger Airport. It's the annual Paint the
37:59
Speaker 3: Capital City Green event. Last couple of years, this event
38:02
Speaker 3: has completely sold out. I mean five to seven hundred
38:05
Speaker 3: people heard, faithful and others. You gather up there at
38:10
Speaker 3: the airport and it's one of the biggest events of
38:12
Speaker 3: the summer to kind of get you ready for the
38:14
Speaker 3: upcoming football season. A lot of excitement on college football,
38:17
Speaker 3: not only in Huntington with Tony Gibson, but of course
38:19
Speaker 3: with Rich Rod in Morgantown as well. But we're focusing
38:22
Speaker 3: on Marshall at this event. Obviously, it's paith the Capital
38:24
Speaker 3: City Green. We'll be telling you more about it, and
38:26
Speaker 3: I will let you know that Steve Animal from ninety
38:29
Speaker 3: eight to seven a month and wild, wonderful classic rock
38:31
Speaker 3: and yours truly we will be seeing the event as
38:34
Speaker 3: we've done for the last I guess three or four years.
38:35
Speaker 3: It's a big old party getting you ready for the
38:38
Speaker 3: football season. So if you get an opportunity, we'll give
38:40
Speaker 3: you more information on tickets and so on and so forth.
38:42
Speaker 3: It's sponsored by the Quarterback Club of Charleston with Marshall University.
38:46
Speaker 3: Proceeds benefit the Big Green. I'm pretty confident that Coach
38:50
Speaker 3: Gibson's going to be there, several players will be there.
38:53
Speaker 3: The Voice of the thunder and Heard, Steve Cotton, will
38:55
Speaker 3: be there as well. It's August twenty first up at
38:56

39:56

39:58
Speaker 3: Now I'm not talking about individual or whatever, but I'm
40:02
Speaker 3: saying it is something to brag about. Let's go to
40:04
Speaker 3: the phones. Our good friend Jim is on theline. Jim,
40:08
Speaker 3: welcome to the show.
40:10
Speaker 17: Take you, Dave, Sir Dave. In my career of nine
40:14
Speaker 17: one one dispatching, I dispatched at the turnpike. We always
40:20
Speaker 17: had at least two dispatchers on at any given time.
40:27
Speaker 17: When the rains first started and the mudslides, the words
40:33
Speaker 17: should have been out. Then they should have called maintenance
40:37
Speaker 17: people out who were just like a snowstorm would be
40:43
Speaker 17: on call. So there's a lot of things I wonder
40:48
Speaker 17: and they might just may try to get to get
40:54
Speaker 17: some of the dispatch takes from the turnpile when the
41:01
Speaker 17: shutdown first started.
41:04
Speaker 3: All right, Jim, we appreciate your phone call. Thanks a lot.

Speaker 3: an interesting story on the morning news drive in this morning,
45:29
Speaker 3: because it probably maybe interest me more than you oblige
45:34
Speaker 3: me a little bit. The number of millionaires in America
45:38
Speaker 3: is actually going up. Whereas millionaires used to be people
45:43
Speaker 3: that were, you know, big time CEOs or Hollywood type people, athletes,
45:49
Speaker 3: you know that kind of stuff, Now more and more
45:52
Speaker 3: millionaires are people like us. One tenth of Americans are
46:00
Speaker 3: now millionaires. With a thousand new people joining the ranks
46:05
Speaker 3: of millionaires every year. The US has more millionaires than
46:11
Speaker 3: any other country. Most of the money is in long
46:16
Speaker 3: term investments, and most of the people, according to this piece,
46:21
Speaker 3: live modestly. It's the people living in the simple suburban
46:27
Speaker 3: type homes to think two three bedroom type homes as
46:31
Speaker 3: opposed to place like you know, where the Beverly Hillbillies
46:35
Speaker 3: woul live or something, in some sort of a mansion.
46:38
Speaker 3: Bottom line is, according to economists, it's easier now than
46:46
Speaker 3: it's ever been to be a millionaire. Now, this is
46:50
Speaker 3: according to an article from the Associated Press. So I
46:55
Speaker 3: don't want people thinking, well, this is just coming from
46:57
Speaker 3: Forbes or something. Now, this is just coming from the

Speaker 3: It's just kind of a middle of the road collection
47:07
Speaker 3: of stories from various places members of the Associated Press.
47:11
Speaker 8: Uh.
47:12
Speaker 3: And here's the interesting thing to me, most of the
47:15
Speaker 3: people that are millionaires are still working. So this myth
47:21
Speaker 3: of somebody setting in this giant mansion with you know,
47:25
Speaker 3: stacks of money in front of them, like Scrooge McDuck,
47:28
Speaker 3: you know, with a giant cigar and h and a
47:31
Speaker 3: bottle of something expensive. It's not it's not reality. You
47:37
Speaker 3: can look this up for yourself from the Associated Press.
47:39
Speaker 3: I'm gonna get into this a little bit more on
47:41
Speaker 3: Metro News midday. I was talking to a financial person
47:43
Speaker 3: earlier off the air and he's going to join me
47:46
Speaker 3: on the show on Friday to talk about it. Uh And,
47:48
Speaker 3: as I said, most of the people are still working.
47:51
Speaker 3: And I think the reason I found this interesting is
47:55
Speaker 3: being a marketing guy, is that we're constantly bombarded with
48:00
Speaker 3: how bad it is out there and how impossible it
48:04
Speaker 3: is to achieve wealth. And oh, by the way, before
48:10
Speaker 3: somebody hits me with, well that may be true of
48:13
Speaker 3: older people. No, the average people in this the fastest
48:16
Speaker 3: growing sector of millionaires is forty an under. It's not
48:20
Speaker 3: it's not about now. And that's not to say that,
48:22
Speaker 3: you know, the whole idea behind getting old is that
48:24
Speaker 3: you're supposed to send around to collect your money and
48:27
Speaker 3: if you were able to save any which hopefully you
48:29
Speaker 3: were able to. But it's forty and under. That's the
48:32
Speaker 3: fastest growing class of millionaires. Those you know, if I
48:35
Speaker 3: had to put an age on, I would guess maybe
48:37
Speaker 3: thirty five to forty that's the fastest. That's the fastest
48:41
Speaker 3: growing sector. And as I said, the majority of them
48:48
Speaker 3: are still working upwards of sixty five to seventy hours
48:52
Speaker 3: a week in many cases, but some aren't. In this article,
48:55
Speaker 3: so quite a lengthy article, and you can just google
48:57
Speaker 3: it in Associated you know, just google it. That's what
49:01
Speaker 3: I did when I heard it on ABC News. Drive
49:03
Speaker 3: it in this morning and the Associated Press to the
49:05
Speaker 3: article and they do a couple of features on people
49:07
Speaker 3: that still go on vacation, still live like they want.
49:12
Speaker 3: They just they don't live in a multimillion dollar home.
49:14
Speaker 3: They live in a modest home. They drive older vehicles,
49:18
Speaker 3: they don't necessarily have the newest Lamborghini out there. But
49:23
Speaker 3: I don't for some reason, I guess, just because this
49:25
Speaker 3: is what we constantly hear from people whining about will
49:28
Speaker 3: you do know what it's like today? Well, apparently somebody does.
49:31
Speaker 3: I don't know what it's like to be a young
49:33
Speaker 3: person today because I'll be fifty five in two months.
49:36
Speaker 3: I'm entering the final demo, as they say, fifty five plus,
49:39
Speaker 3: that's it for me. But apparently some people know what
49:43
Speaker 3: they're doing. And this is not generational wealth, this is
49:46
Speaker 3: first generation wealth. I don't know. I found it interesting.
49:50
Speaker 3: Maybe you don't. TJ. Meadows is one of those people,
49:55
Speaker 3: and he joins, kidding, I love this stuff. I'm kiddie,
49:58
Speaker 3: I know you do. I love this a little bit, Earlily.
50:00
Speaker 3: But so I don't know if you heard the story
50:03
Speaker 3: you redistory or not, but you can go online and
50:05
Speaker 3: look it up for yourself. I just I just thought
50:07
Speaker 3: it was interesting because it's this whole woe is me
50:10
Speaker 3: attitude about especially among some not all, but among some
50:14
Speaker 3: young people, about how I'll never be able to do well.
50:17
Speaker 3: Apparently somebody figured it out. Now you can.
50:20
Speaker 14: Eighty percent of wealthy people in this country are first
50:22
Speaker 14: generation rich. They become rich for the first time investing early,
50:28
Speaker 14: starting in a four oh one k particularly a roth
50:31
Speaker 14: asset to build your wealth. Makes sense.
50:34
Speaker 3: A lot of that wealth that you're talking about. This
50:35
Speaker 3: is nothing new.
50:36
Speaker 14: Thomas Stanley years ago wrote the Millionaire next Door. Dave
50:39
Speaker 14: Ramsey talks about this. Just got a text and said
50:41
Speaker 14: those exact words, millionaire next door. Yeah, there's look millionaires,
50:45
Speaker 14: wealthy people. They don't wear big hats, but they got
50:47
Speaker 14: a whole lot of cattle. They got a whole lot
50:50
Speaker 14: of cattle. And they live below their means. They pay
50:53
Speaker 14: themselves first. They live in a nice home, but not
50:56
Speaker 14: an opulent home. They invest most. In my experience, passive
51:02
Speaker 14: index funds are a huge.
51:04
Speaker 3: Way to build wealth. Okay to put that in English.
51:06
Speaker 14: So you're buying the entire stock market, and you're buying
51:10
Speaker 14: it over a period of time.
51:11
Speaker 3: The market.
51:12
Speaker 14: Just if you bought the total stock market in the
51:13
Speaker 14: last ten years, you're probably returning about fourteen fifteen percent.
51:16
Speaker 3: Annually on your money.
51:18
Speaker 14: Growing your wealth. Their income is a huge tool for them.
51:21
Speaker 14: They make sure they pay themselves first, they save, they
51:23
Speaker 14: build wealth over time. Interesting point if you go to
51:26
Speaker 14: Ramsey's research and Stanley's research backs this up as well.
51:30
Speaker 14: You know, you think doctor lawyer these kinds of things.
51:32
Speaker 14: Teacher one of the most profound careers to become a millionaire.
51:38
Speaker 14: Teachers because they know how to budget right. Engineers in
51:42
Speaker 14: the top doctor lawyer not even in the lawyer might
51:44
Speaker 14: be in the top five doctors.
51:45
Speaker 3: Not well, they're probably still playing their college bills.
51:47
Speaker 14: Well and they're worried about keeping up with the Joneses right,
51:50
Speaker 14: and real wealthy people. Richest man I've ever met, extreme wealth,
51:54
