- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Some days I'm tired of being
- 0:33strong, I'm tired of smelling through it, and I'm tired of
- 0:36saying I'm fine when I'm really not.
- 0:38I don't want a pep talk, I don't want advice.
- 0:40I just want one thing. Let me have a bad day.
- 0:53Hey everyone, and welcome back. This is your first time here.
- 0:55I'm Bryce, and this is the living with Parkinson's, the
- 0:58good, the bad, and the reality. So this channel is where we talk
- 1:01about the real stuff, the hard, the hopeful, and the honest
- 1:04truths about life with Parkinson's.
- 1:06And today we're going to talk about something that might make
- 1:09a few people uncomfortable because this episode is called
- 1:12Let Me Have a Bad Day, and we're going to get right into it.
- 1:15So here's the thing. People love it when you're
- 1:18brave, right? They cheer you on when you're
- 1:20positive. And they love the story of the
- 1:21fighter, the warrior, the one who never gives up.
- 1:24Don't get me wrong, I am all of those things, but I'm also
- 1:27human. And some days I'm not OK.
- 1:31Some days I wake up stiff, foggy, frustrated, and I'm
- 1:35already behind. And some days I struggle to
- 1:37move. I struggle to speak, I struggle
- 1:39to smile, I struggle, struggle, struggle.
- 1:42And who can relate to that? I mean, it's not every day is a
- 1:45good day, is it? I mean, I wish it was.
- 1:48Don't we wish it was? Some days, some days, some days,
- 1:57some days. I feel like the version of me
- 1:59that I used to be is falling and slipping further and further
- 2:03away. And on those days, I don't want
- 2:05encouragement. I don't want someone to fix it.
- 2:08I just want to be allowed to have a bad day.
- 2:10And you know what's hard? When someone tells you, but you
- 2:16know it's going to be OK, right? They say, but I get it.
- 2:20I understand, but it's going to be OK.
- 2:24Or they say like, but you're doing great or you've got this
- 2:27or you're such an inspiration and and maybe I have got this.
- 2:30But in that moment, I'm just trying to get through the day
- 2:33without like breaking, you know, and sometimes positivity, even
- 2:36even well meaning and feel like pressure.
- 2:39It's like saying you don't have permission to fall apart.
- 2:42But here's the truth. Even strong people need the
- 2:47space to unravel a little. Is that true?
- 2:50Do you ever feel that way? Am I alone in this?
- 2:53You know in the comments, do me a favor.
- 2:57Do you feel that way? You know, when you having that
- 2:58bad day and it's like, I don't want to be placated.
- 3:00I don't want to be told everything is okay.
- 3:02I don't really tell told it could be worse.
- 3:03I don't want to say you're doing.
- 3:05Do you feel that way if you let me know or what's a statement or
- 3:08something that someone says to you when you're having one of
- 3:10those days that just drive you nutty?
- 3:12I don't know. So as I said, even strong
- 3:16people, I feel like I'm really strong, right?
- 3:17I feel like I, I'm 15 years into this journey with Parkinson's
- 3:20now and I feel like I can handle anything, you know, But there
- 3:24are all those days where you just wake up and there's like a
- 3:25new symptom or something new or, or, or something you couldn't do
- 3:29or something that I can't do, you know, that I used to be able
- 3:33to do before. And to be honest with you, which
- 3:35I'm always honest. But anyway, that last episode I
- 3:38did that was really nice for music playing in the background.
- 3:41That last episode that I did was, it was really, it was kind
- 3:45of a hard one for me, to be honest.
- 3:46I'll be honest and, and maybe I'm vain and maybe I'm, maybe
- 3:49I'm not, Maybe maybe I am vain, but I, I, this whole face of
- 3:54mine that's going kind of give me that Parkinson's face.
- 3:57It's literally driving me a little bananas.
- 4:00And so it's a big, it's a big deal for me.
- 4:02And I'm, I'm processing, I'm actually processing it as in, in
- 4:05real time. I mean, I did that video.
- 4:07I was just looking at those old pictures and seeing that
- 4:09Parkinson face and Oh my goodness.
- 4:11So you know, I'm processing it. And throughout that, through
- 4:14that, through this process, you know, there's a day or two in
- 4:16there that, you know, I'm relatively always positive.
- 4:19Almost always, you know, the glass is half full kind of guy.
- 4:22And, and I live in, I live by that.
- 4:24But even that strong people, even the ones that can do that,
- 4:28there's some days where it's just like, Nah, I just, I don't
- 4:30even want it. I don't want to hear it, you
- 4:32know? Can I get a thumbs up for that?
- 4:34Anyway, what do I actually need on a bad day?
- 4:39Stay with us. We'll be right back.
- 5:23So what what? So what do I really want
- 5:25instead? Let me be real.
- 5:28Let me say today sucks without having to clean it up
- 5:30afterwards. And let me feel it.
- 5:32The sadness, the fear, the anger, all of it.
- 5:34Because it's real. Let me rest.
- 5:37Not because I'm weak, but because I'm being carrying this
- 5:41for so long. You know what?
- 5:43Let me come back when I'm ready because I always do.
- 5:48And that's the that's the key. I always come back.
- 5:51I always do. And, and you always come back.
- 5:53You're here today, you're watching this, you're listening
- 5:55to this today, which means that you're pushing forward, OK,
- 6:00you're going to be OK and I'm going to be OK.
- 6:02We're all going to be OK. And that's what we need
- 6:04community for to help us all with each other up when we're
- 6:08having bad days and and what not because it's only a bad day.
- 6:13Bad day isn't singular. A bad day is a one day.
- 6:16A bad day is a one time thing. It's a one day, right?
- 6:20Bad days and turn into bad weeks turn into bad months turn in
- 6:23about years. So if you can contain it to a
- 6:26day, then we're OK. If you can't, then let's that's
- 6:29when you know, maybe we need some help to kind of come back a
- 6:31bit quicker. And maybe we do need to start
- 6:32needing some of that positive reinforcements.
- 6:34We get some mind shift and some mind change going on.
- 6:37But you know, I almost want to say it again, You know, I want
- 6:41to say it again because I know you might feel this way.
- 6:43And if you're a caregiver or somebody or someone who loves
- 6:46somebody who has Parkinson's, this might be for you as well,
- 6:48that you might have to allow them this for a moment.
- 6:51OK, what do I want? Instead of you trying to be
- 6:54positive all the time, I want you to let me be real.
- 6:57Let me say today sucks without having to clean it up
- 7:00afterwards. Let me feel it, the sadness, the
- 7:03fear, the guilt, because it's real.
- 7:04Let me rest. Not because I'm weak, but I'm
- 7:07tired. And you know what?
- 7:08Let me come back when I'm ready, because I always do.
- 7:13If you love someone with Parkinson's, or any chronic
- 7:15illness for that matter, this is one of the greatest gifts that
- 7:17you can give them. Ready for this?
- 7:19Let them be human. Let them be human.
- 7:23Don't rush them to be positive. Don't hand them a silver.
- 7:26Don't hand them a silver lining when they're drowning.
- 7:28Just be with them. Be beside them.
- 7:31Because sometimes the best thing that you can say is I get it,
- 7:34I'm just here for you, and you don't have to be OK today, huh?
- 7:40I'm saying this to myself, by the way, right?
- 7:43Because I've spent a long time trying to be strong, trying to
- 7:46be the guy who's doing great, and I am.
- 7:48And while that's part of my story, it's not the whole story.
- 7:52So Bryce, let yourself have a bad day, cry, rest, be mad, be
- 7:58still. And then when you're ready to
- 8:00get back up, because you always do, then you can get back up.
- 8:07And I want you to say that to yourself today.
- 8:09Just replace Bryce with your name, obviously.
- 8:13So blank. Let yourself have a bad day,
- 8:18cry, rest, be mad, be still, and then get.
- 8:22Then when you're ready, you get back up because you always do.
- 8:28And if you're watching this and you think you need permission to
- 8:31do this, here it is. Take the day, take the breath.
- 8:37You're not failing, you're feeling.
- 8:41Say it again. You're not failing, you're
- 8:43feeling. So don't be so hard on yourself
- 8:46because you are you're the one that's the hardest.
- 8:48We're the hardest on ourselves. And as I said, did I have a bad
- 8:51day? I heard that song in my head
- 8:55just like, did you have a bad day?
- 8:56As soon as I said that, I wish I could sing, but but yeah, I had
- 9:01a bad day. You know, I had a bad day and
- 9:04that's OK. And it's going to be OK.
- 9:07So when you got that new symptom or when you're feeling down, all
- 9:09right, reel it in for a day that could be as on the the podcast
- 9:14that we do on Sundays, someone had said that I think it was a
- 9:18Sunday one. I eat a tub of ice cream and
- 9:20someone else said they eat a tub of ice cream and someone else
- 9:22said they, you know, binge flick a binge binge Netflix day or
- 9:27something like that. So I said, OK, well, that'll be
- 9:28my bad name. Big tub of ice cream and a
- 9:30Netflix day. So whatever you need to do to to
- 9:32get that day, I'm just going to get it over with.
- 9:34Don't ignore it. Don't try to pretend it's not
- 9:37there. Don't try to will it away
- 9:38because it's sometimes if you're just it's tiring and it's
- 9:40exhausting, you're going to be more tired.
- 9:41You're going to be absolutely more tired.
- 9:44OK, does that make sense? I hope it does.
- 9:46I hope it does. And you know what, there's days
- 9:48that as a caregiver or partner or someone you know that you're,
- 9:51if you're, you're, you're there for someone all the time, you
- 9:53might want to need one of those days too.
- 9:54And it's OK. You have a hard job, right?
- 9:57I mean, it's, there's trying days and you have to be full of
- 9:59patience. And I respect you and I honor
- 10:01what you do for the people that you love.
- 10:03And it's OK for you to have a bad day.
- 10:05It's OK for you to call one in. It's OK for you to take a day
- 10:08off here and there. And if you need permission, here
- 10:10it is. Take it, take the day, take the
- 10:12breath. You're not failing, you're
- 10:14feeling OK. All right, thanks for being here
- 10:17with me today. Hey, if this resonated with you
- 10:19or if you just needed space to not be OK, drop a comment below
- 10:22and let's normalize it. Let's just make it normal
- 10:24because that's the issue. If it's not normal, we won't do
- 10:26it. So let's make it normal for
- 10:27everybody and then we can all do it.
- 10:29We'll all feel normal. And if somebody you love is
- 10:31going through this, share it with them because maybe they
- 10:33need this more than they're letting on.
- 10:35Please like and subscribe and come back next week.
- 10:38We'll keep doing life together, the good, the bad, and the
- 10:40reality. Don't forget I'm Bryce living

- 10:47Parkinson's may be part of your life, but it doesn't get to
