- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me Eat podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening Hunt podcast, You
- 0:18Speaker 1: Can't predict anything presented by on X Hunt, creators of
- 0:22Speaker 1: the most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor
- 0:29Speaker 1: where you stand with on X Yeah, I need tell everybody, uh,
- 0:37Speaker 1: like about how cool it was and I got that
- 0:39Speaker 1: big yellow tail, and like how jealous you were and
- 0:42Speaker 1: and everything like that. I was just stoked because this
- 0:45Speaker 1: seemed like you were really struggling with all that saltwater
- 0:47Speaker 1: that's getting into your snarkle, and I was just calm
- 0:50Speaker 1: and chill and never got saltwater in my snarkle. I
- 0:53Speaker 1: don't know what you were doing wrong, but you'll probably learn.
- 0:56Speaker 1: You'll probably get that level of experience when you won't
- 0:58Speaker 1: get saltwater in your work one anymore. Well, when you
- 1:02Speaker 1: dive as deep as I dive, for as long as
- 1:06Speaker 1: I dive, the depths have a pull on you. And
- 1:09Speaker 1: you come back up and the depths pull on you,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and that makes your snorkle go under the salt water,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and then you drink a lot of the salt water.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Um probably read about that and some scientific But if
- 1:22Speaker 1: you can't really hold your breath at all, and you
- 1:24Speaker 1: can't really go down and you have to just be
- 1:26Speaker 1: at the surface, you probably get pretty good at keeping
- 1:28Speaker 1: your snorkel abubble water. But I don't have any practice.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Come always down super deep? Got it? Uh? Greg? You
- 1:37Speaker 1: I feel like you don't even need introduction because we
- 1:40Speaker 1: gave you a shout out one time at the Live
- 1:43Speaker 1: Sacramento show. You did did you get any business from that?
- 1:46Speaker 1: I have no clue. No one came in and said, hey,
- 1:49Speaker 1: I heard your name. Okay, do it then talk to
- 1:53Speaker 1: introduce yourself. Greg Fonts, owner of the Free Dive Shop,
- 1:56Speaker 1: distributor for Rob Allen, ocean Hunter and Master Carpon fans,
- 2:00Speaker 1: as well as lightly lightly accomplished competitive spear fisherman. And
- 2:05Speaker 1: I'll point out a full time fireman. Yeah, dude, fireman.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I need to talk to like whoever negotiates with the
- 2:12Speaker 1: fireman union because I feel like you guys you're talking
- 2:16Speaker 1: to really you're actually talking you you negotiate on behalf
- 2:20Speaker 1: of the fireman. Oh, you're doing a great job, because
- 2:23Speaker 1: I've made a lot of firemen. That's a schedule. If
- 2:30Speaker 1: I could go back in time, I would be a fireman.
- 2:31Speaker 1: What do you guys work? You guys work like two
- 2:33Speaker 1: on thirty off or something like that. I can't talk
- 2:36Speaker 1: about it. It's too you don't want a competition, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 1: want people moving in on your business. Yeah, it's like
- 2:43Speaker 1: twelve twelve hours on thirty days off. Just think for
- 2:47Speaker 1: everyone at the media the office went to that schedule.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Oh my god, it's nice being a fireman. Um Sacramentos
- 2:52Speaker 1: where your dive shop is. Yeah, we's Sacramento in particular. Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So people that want people that listen to this and
- 2:57Speaker 1: get all inspired to get into beer fishing can go
- 3:01Speaker 1: down and talk to your wife. I understand, Craig, yep,
- 3:05Speaker 1: me my wife, Jason. Those are the primary people probably
- 3:10Speaker 1: talk to you on the phone. You sent me a
- 3:12Speaker 1: video once explaining how something worked. I mean to ask
- 3:15Speaker 1: you about this, and you had on an apron pants
- 3:18Speaker 1: less apron and pant and pants and no pants, and
- 3:24Speaker 1: I was, what's going on there? I was just wondering
- 3:26Speaker 1: if you're gonna pick up on it? I did? Did you?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yea even sold my wife? There you go. I'm like
- 3:30Speaker 1: I feel like I feel like I feel like this
- 3:32Speaker 1: I believe this gentleman has no pants on, no pants,
- 3:37Speaker 1: And I was wondering if you're gonna say anything. And
- 3:40Speaker 1: you spent a lot of time like that just to
- 3:43Speaker 1: see if you would say anything, and you didn't, So
- 3:46Speaker 1: I didn't say anything to my wife. Yeah, and then
- 3:49Speaker 1: it just never happened. And the problem was the shot.
- 3:52Speaker 1: The shot was a little lot of focus, so I
- 3:54Speaker 1: didn't know, like you know, I know you have a
- 3:55Speaker 1: lot going on. So you were oh, no, I took,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I took no, but ever occurred to me either, just
- 4:01Speaker 1: be that you were just messing with me. Yeah, yeah, absolutely,
- 4:03Speaker 1: because I was having a hard time. Um, I'll just
- 4:06Speaker 1: come out and say, I'm look an inspire. I feel
- 4:07Speaker 1: like I wasted my life instead of doing all the
- 4:09Speaker 1: things I did, I should have spent all that time
- 4:11Speaker 1: spear fishing. And now I'm like an aspiring spear fisherman
- 4:14Speaker 1: who I've misspent my entire life and I'm only now
- 4:17Speaker 1: getting back on tracked what I should have been doing
- 4:19Speaker 1: the whole time. Um, you wear pants too much? And
- 4:22Speaker 1: I was, and I had a gun and I couldn't
- 4:24Speaker 1: figure it out. And I sent Gregor question and he's
- 4:27Speaker 1: sitting there in the apron and he turned around. I'm like,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I thought it was like a spear fishing thing, but
- 4:32Speaker 1: I didn't understand. And I like that. I like that,
- 4:37Speaker 1: um good. And then George the ship's captain, captain of
- 4:42Speaker 1: the not yours, which is not a yacht. It's a
- 4:46Speaker 1: large fishing boat. Correct three year old fishing boat, a
- 4:49Speaker 1: thirty year old fishing boat. And you're just a hobbyist
- 4:53Speaker 1: pretty much. Yeah, I just show up and play. But
- 4:55Speaker 1: you know, you've never been in the You've never been
- 4:57Speaker 1: like in the business of spear fishing, or are you.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I competed in one Nationals, which was quite a comedy
- 5:04Speaker 1: of errors where it was at Leo Creole State Park
- 5:07Speaker 1: here in California, with um my good buddy alex Or
- 5:10Speaker 1: knowing another buddy of ours, Mike Walker, and we had
- 5:15Speaker 1: been probably spearfishing about a year and a half or so,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and we finagled some some dive club to sponsor us,
- 5:24Speaker 1: because we had to be sponsored to get in this thing.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So we found a dive company or dive group in
- 5:29Speaker 1: Florida gave us a rubber stamp. We entered the contest
- 5:33Speaker 1: and ninus saying you guys asked no, but we did
- 5:37Speaker 1: not come in last It was great, Yeah, it was
- 5:40Speaker 1: it was It was interesting. So how many how many
- 5:44Speaker 1: participants will be in a speaking of there? That's probably
- 5:52Speaker 1: where we introduced Alex. He'd probably be able to speak
- 5:54Speaker 1: on that. Mm hmmm. Pleasure to be here. Introduce yourself.
- 6:03Speaker 1: You're you're a competitive spear fisherman. I'm truly officially retired
- 6:08Speaker 1: from competitive spear fishing. You don't go anymore. I've run
- 6:12Speaker 1: my damn it, and now I'm too old. Oh how
- 6:17Speaker 1: old you like in the autumn of your career as
- 6:19Speaker 1: a spear fisherman. Yeah, it's coming gone, Like what happens?
- 6:23Speaker 1: How old are you? Dude? So I'm just coming in man,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I'm like, and I'm already older in you. You need
- 6:33Speaker 1: to be a millennial at this point in order to
- 6:36Speaker 1: to take it down at the comps, unless you're in Florida,
- 6:38Speaker 1: then you need to be a millionaire because only the
- 6:41Speaker 1: boys with the big money get to play in those
- 6:43Speaker 1: comps because those are big boat comps. So I'm already
- 6:46Speaker 1: like too old to ever be really good, to be
- 6:50Speaker 1: really good, no, to be recognized as one of the
- 6:54Speaker 1: elite amongst the elite in the competition. Circles. Yeah, okay,
- 6:59Speaker 1: because what happens, body, this isn't what it was. You
- 7:02Speaker 1: just don't care anymore. I'm not understanding you gotta be
- 7:06Speaker 1: more clear in the beginning, Like right now, you're at
- 7:12Speaker 1: the beginning and you're amped. Oh I I'm with you,
- 7:15Speaker 1: and you're at the point where you're ready to go.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I want to I want to see what I'm made
- 7:21Speaker 1: of in comparison to everybody else. See George and I
- 7:25Speaker 1: we did that. We we we said we want to
- 7:27Speaker 1: see what we're made of. And so we got rubber
- 7:29Speaker 1: stamp from this club in Florida, and we went out
- 7:32Speaker 1: and we showed him what we were made of, and
- 7:34Speaker 1: what was it that you were made of? We we
- 7:36Speaker 1: we finished second to last, finished last out of fourteen teams.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And you know what, we just went in to serf.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Serve just piled us up. Kayak weight belt lost. I'm
- 7:52Speaker 1: paddling out there. I don't have a weight belt. I've
- 7:55Speaker 1: got to do the whole competition with. I got my
- 7:58Speaker 1: anchor from my kayak. I've stuffed it in here, borrowed
- 8:01Speaker 1: a couple of weeks from him, stuffed him in my pants.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I had to overhaul competition with a big rip in
- 8:07Speaker 1: my wet suit, was freezing with an anchor stuffed in
- 8:09Speaker 1: my wet suit as my weight belt. And that's how
- 8:12Speaker 1: that's how the competition started for us. It was just
- 8:14Speaker 1: all downhill from the pretty much. Okay, what year was that?
- 8:18Speaker 1: Was that? Two thousand seven? I don't even I couldn't
- 8:22Speaker 1: tell you. It might have been seven, or it might
- 8:24Speaker 1: have been nine. That was our first U S Nationals.
- 8:29Speaker 1: My one and only I really got the bug and
- 8:32Speaker 1: I went, Okay, this is cool. And I took the
- 8:35Speaker 1: time to go and meet some of the the bigger
- 8:39Speaker 1: tournament players here in northern California, and I had a
- 8:44Speaker 1: couple of guys took me under their their wing and
- 8:47Speaker 1: really started to teach me how to prepare, how to learn,
- 8:52Speaker 1: how to learn, how to set yourself up to perform
- 8:56Speaker 1: at a high level in spear fishing tournaments. Everything from
- 9:00Speaker 1: learning the ocean, learning the fish, um, creating a strategy,
- 9:05Speaker 1: understanding time. Time is really important and I went through
- 9:10Speaker 1: a through that for a long long period of time.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Dovin multiple nationals, qualified for the U S national team
- 9:18Speaker 1: in two thousand fourteen, went and represented the US in Peru,
- 9:24Speaker 1: and after Peru, went, Okay, this has been an awesome run,
- 9:31Speaker 1: and I'm going to transition out of the I'm doing
- 9:35Speaker 1: this for sport and more into the soul spear fishing side.
- 9:40Speaker 1: And it's been a great transition, and I haven't been
- 9:42Speaker 1: happier about I mean, I couldn't be happier about it. Yeah,
- 9:45Speaker 1: to be honestly, I'm not. I wouldn't be drawn to
- 9:47Speaker 1: um any kind of competition like that. Yeah. It In
- 9:52Speaker 1: every sport there's the good and the bad, and fortunately
- 9:56Speaker 1: I was surrounded by a lot of the good and
- 9:58Speaker 1: that that's what for me made it so fantastic. I
- 10:01Speaker 1: think the thing that one of the things I wanted
- 10:03Speaker 1: to ask you guys all about this is on people's mind.
- 10:06Speaker 1: He used to be on my mind. What's your what's
- 10:08Speaker 1: the psychology you have for uh sharks? Because like when
- 10:15Speaker 1: we're messed with that, I mean, we're we're a little
- 10:19Speaker 1: south of Great White We're in California right now, but
- 10:22Speaker 1: we're a little bit of south of the Great White area,
- 10:24Speaker 1: right the Great White Shark area. We're not because it
- 10:28Speaker 1: wasn't lost on me yesterday that we're sitting there in
- 10:32Speaker 1: the water, gutting, bleeding fish that are flopping around. You
- 10:41Speaker 1: got them tied to your waist. Uh. When I asked
- 10:48Speaker 1: George early on, I was like, what about the sharks,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and he said, there's nothing you can do because you
- 10:52Speaker 1: don't even know it until it happens. He's like, there's
- 10:56Speaker 1: no point in thinking about it. It's kind of worrying
- 10:59Speaker 1: about a mountain lion, right, yeah, which I don't even
- 11:02Speaker 1: think about. Right when he gets you, it is going
- 11:05Speaker 1: to be over like that. Yeah, it's the same for
- 11:08Speaker 1: us right now. Before we started this trip, one of
- 11:12Speaker 1: the largest Great Whites that has been sighted was on
- 11:15Speaker 1: the backside of Anna Kappa where we were warming up.
- 11:17Speaker 1: It was where we started. You guys, to tell me
- 11:20Speaker 1: about that. It's not important. So what's your what's your
- 11:24Speaker 1: viewpoint on start? Like, we'll go the same way we
- 11:26Speaker 1: did introductions. What's your view like, how do you cope
- 11:28Speaker 1: with the idea of sharks because you had a great
- 11:30Speaker 1: white take a swipe at you? I did? I did.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I was about two miles north of Albion scouting for
- 11:36Speaker 1: a tournament. Tell people where it is totally familiar. So
- 11:39Speaker 1: if you go into Mendocino County, if you know where
- 11:41Speaker 1: Fort Bragg is, it's maybe twenty minutes south of there
- 11:44Speaker 1: in the Great State of California, Great City of California,
- 11:46Speaker 1: up up in northern California, and I was scouting for
- 11:51Speaker 1: a tournament. My dad was on the boat and this
- 11:53Speaker 1: is one thing that uh, I don't do is my
- 11:57Speaker 1: dad was bringing up sharks the whole way up, and
- 11:59Speaker 1: I'm just like, that's just you don't do it talking
- 12:01Speaker 1: about it, Yeah, because you guys don't talk about now
- 12:03Speaker 1: we don't talk You just don't talk about It's just
- 12:05Speaker 1: one of those things you don't talk about. And the
- 12:06Speaker 1: whole way up he's he's bringing it up a little bit,
- 12:08Speaker 1: and you know, it's my dad, and I was just
- 12:09Speaker 1: trying to shrug it off. Uh. So we get in
- 12:12Speaker 1: the water and they always say, truck, trust your instincts, right,
- 12:15Speaker 1: And like that day, I was like, I feel at loft,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but went scouted anyway. Uh sixty five ft of water
- 12:22Speaker 1: coming up from a dive where I found it was
- 12:24Speaker 1: actually Alex. You'd appreciate this. It was Alex's Lincott hole.
- 12:27Speaker 1: He wasn't in the tournament. Verifying verifying it is it
- 12:31Speaker 1: is one of the best Lincot holes in the othern California,
- 12:33Speaker 1: explainably described to people lincock hole real quick. Truly it
- 12:37Speaker 1: is perfect. It's a perfect scenario. So this is in
- 12:41Speaker 1: about sixty five water um, not too much around it,
- 12:46Speaker 1: so it's actually kind of hard to find. So you
- 12:49Speaker 1: can't just like happen upon this thing. Just it's an
- 12:51Speaker 1: area you wouldn't really dive all that much and uh
- 12:56Speaker 1: jumped in and really the lincod hole itself it's perfect.
- 13:00Speaker 1: You kind of go down and it's like these two
- 13:03Speaker 1: rocks lean on each other and there's there's an entrance
- 13:05Speaker 1: in an exit, but to your left there's a tight hole.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And a lot of times what people think link I had,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, want these big, huge caves. What they want
- 13:13Speaker 1: is maybe a cave that goes into a very tight entrance.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You know. Some of some good link cod holes are
- 13:18Speaker 1: only you know, the entrance is only maybe eight or
- 13:21Speaker 1: ten inches high. If that they like squeeze in there
- 13:24Speaker 1: and really like to be secure. Yeah. I always think
- 13:26Speaker 1: to myself, if a seal can't get its head in there,
- 13:29Speaker 1: then it's a perfect spot for a link Huh. Right,
- 13:33Speaker 1: a predator can't get in, but they can finagle their
- 13:36Speaker 1: way in there, then you know that. Okay, this is
- 13:40Speaker 1: this is to let me interrupt your story. Uh. As
- 13:45Speaker 1: a lifelong rod and real fisherman, we don't uh. You
- 13:52Speaker 1: guys deal in such a different level of detail about
- 13:54Speaker 1: what's going on below the water surface. Where we might
- 13:58Speaker 1: say that's a great spire to catch a link, or
- 14:01Speaker 1: that's a nice rock pile to catch a link. COD,
- 14:03Speaker 1: a spear fisherman knows the whole that that son of
- 14:09Speaker 1: a bitch lives in in the rock pile. We we
- 14:11Speaker 1: know the detail of the reef, especially the people. As
- 14:14Speaker 1: you get into it more, you start carrying market Boody's
- 14:17Speaker 1: and gps is, and you'll not only mark market on GPS,
- 14:22Speaker 1: you'll probably go into your little notebook later and say,
- 14:24Speaker 1: this is a westerly or northeast facing hole enter from
- 14:28Speaker 1: this direction, look left. You know that much of a detail.
- 14:32Speaker 1: So yeah, you might say a rock pile, but we
- 14:34Speaker 1: know which hole in that rock pile that link is in,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and we know the prevailing swell. Link cod won't typically
- 14:41Speaker 1: face the prevailing swell, so we don't waste time in
- 14:45Speaker 1: the prevailing swell. We work on the lee side down
- 14:50Speaker 1: and around a corner where it's always down and around
- 14:52Speaker 1: a corner or tight. If it isn't, I don't want
- 14:55Speaker 1: to get blast in the face. Yeah, if it isn't
- 14:57Speaker 1: a prevailing swell, and it's going to be a very
- 14:59Speaker 1: specific a fixed sheltered rock piler or set of rocks.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, all right. So you go down there and
- 15:06Speaker 1: I get the link cod hole is a link cod
- 15:08Speaker 1: hole and other link cod like it's like a bear
- 15:12Speaker 1: den or good bear den bears. The bears all die
- 15:15Speaker 1: and then new bears will come and those bears will
- 15:17Speaker 1: find that den in use. Yeah, you can shoot a
- 15:18Speaker 1: line and have a link in it, you know, a
- 15:19Speaker 1: couple of days later. Uh. Usually the big you know,
- 15:23Speaker 1: like this, this particular hole um is perfect and usually
- 15:27Speaker 1: has big females in it, and that's usually typically what
- 15:30Speaker 1: you find in there. You won't find like a small
- 15:32Speaker 1: male or anything like that. This is a typically a
- 15:35Speaker 1: big female link cod hole UM. So basically swimming down,
- 15:40Speaker 1: going to check this thing. At about six or five
- 15:42Speaker 1: ft you go and it's an entrance and it has
- 15:44Speaker 1: a left hole and a right hole. So I look
- 15:47Speaker 1: in left and I didn't see anything. And you look
- 15:49Speaker 1: in and at the very very yeah flat, you have
- 15:52Speaker 1: to have a flashlight hunting these things. Because we're talking.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I'm probably in the main hole four ft five ft
- 15:59Speaker 1: and this hole that the we're working on, you the
- 16:04Speaker 1: bottom of the holes, all the whole entrances at about yeah,
- 16:09Speaker 1: so then you go and so you're in this hole
- 16:11Speaker 1: and then it has a whole little left which didn't
- 16:13Speaker 1: see it initially. Then I looked way up and this
- 16:15Speaker 1: hole is probably I don't know, eight ft nine feet
- 16:18Speaker 1: back and this thing is tucked all the way back
- 16:20Speaker 1: in just looking then I pushed out of that hole
- 16:23Speaker 1: a little bit and then there's actually a bon Yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 1: there's a bonus kind of a bonus nook in the
- 16:29Speaker 1: same hole, and there's vermilion a lot of times tucked
- 16:32Speaker 1: in there. And actually when I found this everything time
- 16:35Speaker 1: because I actually followed a vermillion to this hole when
- 16:38Speaker 1: on this particularly when I how you found out about it.
- 16:41Speaker 1: No I knew where it was, but as I was
- 16:42Speaker 1: heading down, I was like, oh, nice vermilion. Oh oh,
- 16:44Speaker 1: it's heading right into them where I need to go.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Perfect um, So yeah, I found the link there and
- 16:49Speaker 1: then uh, vermilion to my right pop out that there's
- 16:52Speaker 1: actually exit. You can pop out the backside of it.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So you went through the hole. Yeah, it's kind of
- 16:56Speaker 1: like a really tight arch that has kind of caves.
- 17:00Speaker 1: It go not caves, but like small small holes to
- 17:02Speaker 1: go left and right. And uh, what's interesting about this
- 17:05Speaker 1: is if you look at this hole from the top,
- 17:07Speaker 1: let's say you just dive down thirty because the bottom
- 17:11Speaker 1: and the rocks are virtually the same color, it looks
- 17:15Speaker 1: dead flat. It's very hard. That's what makes it so special.
- 17:19Speaker 1: It's a lot of people could swim over this and
- 17:22Speaker 1: they'd never know. You have to get on the bottom
- 17:26Speaker 1: in order to see it. If I start like a
- 17:28Speaker 1: spearfishing company, I'm calling the whole hunter. Yeah, go on.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So there we are. This particular day there was really
- 17:37Speaker 1: good viz um, which is not typical of the North Coast.
- 17:41Speaker 1: It was probably thirty ft of is or so. So
- 17:44Speaker 1: go exit. That's way ability for North cos it's great
- 17:49Speaker 1: um and kind of on the way up, I was
- 17:52Speaker 1: just just shaking my head like, yes, that's what I mean.
- 17:55Speaker 1: That is like to have. I mean the laying at
- 17:57Speaker 1: the time, I think was around the twentysothing pounder it was.
- 18:00Speaker 1: It was a studling. Is this in competition or is
- 18:03Speaker 1: this pre pre competition? What's your old man doing. He's
- 18:07Speaker 1: on the boat, was hanging out. He's so bless his heart,
- 18:12Speaker 1: he gets violently csick. So that's why he the skilled
- 18:16Speaker 1: palamine patches that we had Yannie test out. That's that's
- 18:19Speaker 1: kind of what he uses. Um, Yanni people got the
- 18:23Speaker 1: suppression Johnnie like he's all tough stock and everything. Dude,
- 18:29Speaker 1: water due falls apart. So he's he's fine, he's he's
- 18:35Speaker 1: just sitting on the boat waiting and uh, for some reason,
- 18:39Speaker 1: which you're not supposed to do. But for some reason,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I looked up saw the boat and I said, well
- 18:42Speaker 1: I might as well. Okay, why can't you look up?
- 18:46Speaker 1: I'm doing great hosting right now because we're hitting a
- 18:48Speaker 1: lot of little diving tips along the way. Why can't
- 18:53Speaker 1: you look up? In general, you shouldn't look up because
- 18:56Speaker 1: site one, it messes with your your throat and your airway,
- 19:00Speaker 1: your hyper extending everything. Um. So, on the way up,
- 19:02Speaker 1: it doesn't matter so much. But uh, if you are
- 19:05Speaker 1: making a deep diving coming back up and you look
- 19:07Speaker 1: up and you're just going ship, that's a long ways up.
- 19:11Speaker 1: You're psychologically just putting yourself down. So you just kick
- 19:15Speaker 1: up and like like you kind of learned on this trip.
- 19:17Speaker 1: You start feeling that positive buoyancy point where you get
- 19:20Speaker 1: a free right up once you that's a great feeling.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And I took your advice and didn't I took it
- 19:25Speaker 1: even though it wasn't diving deep just to just to
- 19:27Speaker 1: get in there, just to get because like hy form,
- 19:29Speaker 1: bad habits when you're just starting out. So once you
- 19:32Speaker 1: told me not to look up, I just decided, like,
- 19:34Speaker 1: I'm not even deep anyway, but I won't look up. Yeah,
- 19:36Speaker 1: it's just again the light, just when you're looking straight.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Once you do it a few times, you know right
- 19:41Speaker 1: where you're at. That's by the amount of light pouring through.
- 19:44Speaker 1: If you're having a particularly feel, you know, from visibility
- 19:47Speaker 1: to just kind of what's going on, you'll get a
- 19:49Speaker 1: different feeling for the depths. And then all of a
- 19:51Speaker 1: sudden you feel like rising up and you just chill,
- 19:53Speaker 1: stop kicking and free right up. So there you are.
- 19:56Speaker 1: So there, I am kicking, and for some reason I
- 19:58Speaker 1: looked up and I what's going on? I might as
- 20:00Speaker 1: well kick up to the boat and stuff kicking. Normally
- 20:02Speaker 1: just kicked straight up, do your recovery breast and then
- 20:06Speaker 1: kick wherever you're gonna kick. For some reason, I kicked
- 20:09Speaker 1: to the boat and as I was reaching up, um,
- 20:12Speaker 1: as my dad describes, a twelve by twelve boil pushed
- 20:15Speaker 1: up about a foot around me and I was grabbing
- 20:18Speaker 1: the boat and knocked me off the boat. I got
- 20:20Speaker 1: back on the boat, turned around and it was you
- 20:23Speaker 1: know this just it looked like disturbed water and like
- 20:27Speaker 1: a rapids, just this huge, massive boil. Um. And the
- 20:32Speaker 1: first thing that Dad says is do you think that
- 20:34Speaker 1: could have been a whale? And then we started talking.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I app the back side of it and everything else. Um.
- 20:43Speaker 1: So again, but like George said, so he changed his mind.
- 20:47Speaker 1: I think the only reason probably the visibility was good
- 20:50Speaker 1: and I was coming up next to a large object
- 20:53Speaker 1: right I was. I probably faded out against the boat.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Um because it happened right when I was reaching for
- 20:58Speaker 1: the boat. So he changed his mind, thankfully, and thankfully
- 21:02Speaker 1: I didn't come up straight up. Else I probably would
- 21:04Speaker 1: have either gotten bumped or nailed, or who knows what
- 21:07Speaker 1: would have happened. So but I liked it. E went
- 21:09Speaker 1: got right back in the water. I did. I pulled
- 21:13Speaker 1: the anchor and my dad dropped me on a linkod
- 21:15Speaker 1: hole about half a mile away, was anybody in there
- 21:18Speaker 1: that was empty? That was empty? And then after that
- 21:21Speaker 1: I kind of gone, you know, half a mile is
- 21:24Speaker 1: just not far enough. So we ended up going out
- 21:26Speaker 1: of the tournament zone about three miles and I ended
- 21:29Speaker 1: up getting the limits of everything and packed it up
- 21:32Speaker 1: for the day. I went home. So, yeah, you got
- 21:34Speaker 1: get in the water. One of one of my good
- 21:36Speaker 1: friends got similar thing happened to him, and it was
- 21:40Speaker 1: it was a little more of a process to get
- 21:42Speaker 1: back in the water. I think that the parallels between um,
- 21:47Speaker 1: the parallels between hunting and grizzly country and hunting and
- 21:51Speaker 1: great white shark country, there's a lot of parallels where
- 21:54Speaker 1: it's like it's just not gonna happen, but when it does,
- 21:58Speaker 1: you hear about it, and it's just in the back
- 22:01Speaker 1: of your head, and there's this sort of like you
- 22:03Speaker 1: be a little bit fatalistic about it. And then you
- 22:06Speaker 1: also feel like everyone's telling you all the chances of
- 22:08Speaker 1: getting attacked by a great white shark, or like you
- 22:11Speaker 1: got better chance of getting attacked three times by lightning.
- 22:15Speaker 1: But then you're like, but you're in a very select
- 22:18Speaker 1: high risk group, and and like archery hunting for elk,
- 22:24Speaker 1: you're in a high risk group because of the things
- 22:26Speaker 1: you're not doing, like and the other parallel being you
- 22:31Speaker 1: have to do everything wrong. You're not making noise, you're
- 22:35Speaker 1: making elk calls. You're like slipping around. You're out at dawn,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you're out at dusk. You know, you're in the vicinity
- 22:44Speaker 1: of elk. Grizzlies like to be in the vicinity of elk,
- 22:48Speaker 1: and so in spear fishing, it's like people could be like, oh,
- 22:50Speaker 1: you know, beach goers have zero chance to getting hit.
- 22:52Speaker 1: But then you're like, you're you're you're going where the
- 22:55Speaker 1: fish are. Seals go where the fish are. You're dealing
- 22:59Speaker 1: with dead and you're acting like a seal realistically, right
- 23:02Speaker 1: going to the sticking your head into a hole and
- 23:11Speaker 1: right for the picking. Uh. And this is something that
- 23:13Speaker 1: we've kind of talked about in North how is if
- 23:16Speaker 1: you we we are starting to push and some of
- 23:20Speaker 1: it's just training and some of it's just you know,
- 23:22Speaker 1: learning from other mentors, but we are pushing into deeper realms. Right.
- 23:25Speaker 1: You know, you talked to someone twenty years ago, very
- 23:29Speaker 1: very few, if anyone, was was hunting in sixty seventy
- 23:32Speaker 1: ft water. Well, now you know this last Nationals depth,
- 23:37Speaker 1: It's just it's putting you off of you know, traditionally
- 23:39Speaker 1: the people say points are bad for sharks. There are
- 23:41Speaker 1: certain areas are bad for sure. Well, yeah, this is
- 23:43Speaker 1: pushing you off those points. You know, a couple of
- 23:45Speaker 1: hundred yards plus just like a a place that we
- 23:49Speaker 1: scouted for know your Nationals. I mean we were I
- 23:52Speaker 1: think this high spot was like half a mile off
- 23:54Speaker 1: shore and it dropped off the shot you know it
- 23:57Speaker 1: was there was a high spot and maybe fifty ft
- 23:59Speaker 1: but we're doing a lot of diving to what did
- 24:03Speaker 1: we name that spot? So I think because really when
- 24:07Speaker 1: we were scouting for this, it was eight to ft swell,
- 24:10Speaker 1: so we were the whole thing we were planning on
- 24:12Speaker 1: being offshore. Um. And we were actually with Dennis Hostlers
- 24:16Speaker 1: and what five time National Change, seven time National Channel man,
- 24:20Speaker 1: he's snuck two more in there. Um. So we're working
- 24:23Speaker 1: this and we had to use a live boat because
- 24:25Speaker 1: we couldn't anchor up because everything was the swell was
- 24:28Speaker 1: was way too far up. So um, yeah, boat means
- 24:34Speaker 1: that there's a dude running the boat anchor. Yeah, kind
- 24:37Speaker 1: of like we did this morning because the anchor or
- 24:40Speaker 1: the this current was running too well. I think we
- 24:42Speaker 1: end up diving or dumping Alex off. And then when
- 24:49Speaker 1: you guys tell the shark tack story, the way, is
- 24:51Speaker 1: this a shark story? What are you guys talking about? Yeah,
- 24:55Speaker 1: this is a little side chat between but this is
- 24:58Speaker 1: about putting yourself in a situation where you are in
- 25:02Speaker 1: the shark zone. Scientifically, about the great white chat. We're
- 25:08Speaker 1: half mile offshore on a series of high spots pinnacles
- 25:13Speaker 1: with drop off on the outside to two feet, and
- 25:18Speaker 1: it's if you were to look left and right parallel
- 25:21Speaker 1: with the coastline. There's nothing out there that just open
- 25:24Speaker 1: ocean both ways. And that's what people didn't do decades ago.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I forgot that's where we're going with this. It happens
- 25:32Speaker 1: the spear fisher. We're pushing and there's there's more Great
- 25:36Speaker 1: Whites than there were ten years ago. Correct, Yeah, allegedly
- 25:43Speaker 1: they've been protected since the about the mid nineties. So
- 25:45Speaker 1: there rebounding, rebounding um and we don't worry about it.
- 25:51Speaker 1: It is what it is. I think, what was the
- 25:54Speaker 1: last time someone in the state got killed by a
- 25:56Speaker 1: Great White? That was Randy Fry and I don't remember
- 26:00Speaker 1: of the year, but it's probably been fifteen years. That's
- 26:03Speaker 1: the difference between this, and that's the difference between this
- 26:05Speaker 1: and our stuff, because every year someone gets dusted off
- 26:08Speaker 1: by grizzly couple, a couple of people year year. I
- 26:12Speaker 1: can't speak to Great Whites taking people another fashion, right,
- 26:16Speaker 1: swimmers or surfers or anything, but people in your community,
- 26:19Speaker 1: people in our community. The last one that was fatal
- 26:21Speaker 1: was Randy Fry. I think shark attack fatalities in general
- 26:27Speaker 1: are extremely low because there's a difference between an attack
- 26:32Speaker 1: for food and and a bite for curiosity and great
- 26:36Speaker 1: white for defense. I mean, yeah, that's a big one.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Great Whites they nibble for curiosity. Yeah, they do. Uh
- 26:43Speaker 1: what's called a test bite. It's a it's it was
- 26:48Speaker 1: very gentle. It's a very gentle hit you at twenty
- 26:52Speaker 1: test bite and that's enough for human flesh two be
- 26:59Speaker 1: a killer. So that means what to you? Nothing? I mean,
- 27:06Speaker 1: what can you do about it. I've got medical kid
- 27:08Speaker 1: on the boat, or always have a medical kid in
- 27:10Speaker 1: the kayak, that kid on the boat. Most of the
- 27:13Speaker 1: people I dive with could handle something like that if
- 27:18Speaker 1: it came down to it. But Again, if you're going
- 27:22Speaker 1: to think about it and it defines your day, you're
- 27:25Speaker 1: never going to get in the water. Yeah. I was
- 27:27Speaker 1: surprised that the degree to which I wasn't thinking about
- 27:30Speaker 1: it because you guys are probably passed this. But when
- 27:33Speaker 1: you're in those kelp forests, you know, I made the mistake.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Recently watched and they had a great white to had
- 27:37Speaker 1: a camera on it and the the Kelp forest, which
- 27:43Speaker 1: is some cool footage. Man, water right, this cruise is
- 27:47Speaker 1: just working your way through the Kelp forest. Man, it
- 27:50Speaker 1: was unbelievable. Um. But it's like it's it's kind of
- 27:56Speaker 1: it's just spooky in there, especially in the waning light
- 28:00Speaker 1: when we were out last night when the sun was
- 28:02Speaker 1: going down. That's called the magic hour. Oh, and it's
- 28:05Speaker 1: just like a spooky atmosphere. It's so funny because you're
- 28:07Speaker 1: like in spook land with your head down in the
- 28:11Speaker 1: water and it seems like you're the only person on
- 28:15Speaker 1: the planet and there's like shadows and it's dark and
- 28:18Speaker 1: it's a kelp forest and there's little canyons quiet, and
- 28:21Speaker 1: then you lift your head up and look, it's like
- 28:23Speaker 1: sunny California. Man. It's like people out like sailboats and
- 28:27Speaker 1: ship Then you put your head back there like wow,
- 28:28Speaker 1: it's always scary, and I'm like, oh, I'm in California.
- 28:32Speaker 1: It's always scary. Back and forth. It's so intimate with
- 28:36Speaker 1: the And then that when you found that baitball at
- 28:41Speaker 1: dusk going out there and those rays, the eagle rays
- 28:46Speaker 1: cruising around you guys saw ego rays. Actually that's sorry
- 28:51Speaker 1: bat rays. But it's like, if those aren't ghosts of
- 28:56Speaker 1: of evil people, I don't know what they are. They're
- 29:01Speaker 1: evil and you die come back as bray at dusk
- 29:07Speaker 1: we have that looks like that like a joker smile.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I liked him, but I'm like, how that's evil personified.
- 29:17Speaker 1: That's like a ghost coming through the water. Yeah. I
- 29:20Speaker 1: got in front of that wall, right, we have that
- 29:22Speaker 1: big wall of Blacksmith that we're defining where the current
- 29:27Speaker 1: was starting to pick back up, and we were sitting
- 29:29Speaker 1: in front of that. I made a dive, look back
- 29:32Speaker 1: at the bait wall, looked around, looked up, and two
- 29:36Speaker 1: coming right over the top, just outlined silhouette right over
- 29:41Speaker 1: the top, and they just they moved through the water
- 29:44Speaker 1: so smooth. It's just it's insane. They're just haunting the ocean.
- 29:48Speaker 1: They're like ghosts sent to haunt the ocean with spookiness,
- 29:52Speaker 1: and they like the flashers. Oh they're spooky. Does anybody
- 29:55Speaker 1: eat them? Who eats a ray in the ocean? Some
- 29:59Speaker 1: people like? Not people like what. Some people actually take
- 30:03Speaker 1: like a cookie cutter and we'll punch. No, I've never done.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I've cleaned some. I don't know if they have a
- 30:09Speaker 1: natural predator. The tastes like scallops. Well, I mean hammer
- 30:12Speaker 1: heads specialized in him. You don't have those right here, right,
- 30:14Speaker 1: don't have this here? I thought j'ven all a great
- 30:17Speaker 1: white sharks targeted them, But those might be sting rays,
- 30:20Speaker 1: not bad race. I don't know. So early on, I
- 30:23Speaker 1: uh took a couple of leopard sharks, which are actually
- 30:27Speaker 1: really good eating with spear, And then Alex was out
- 30:30Speaker 1: on a trip with me and I'm like, man, you
- 30:32Speaker 1: know they're right up in the little rocks, you know,
- 30:34Speaker 1: ten feet of water. Their cruise around in the in
- 30:36Speaker 1: the stuff. And he's like nope. I'm like, why not, man,
- 30:39Speaker 1: it's it's good table fair. You should get these. He's like, nope,
- 30:42Speaker 1: I've made my I've made a deal with the sharks.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I'm not gonna screw them. They're not gonna screw with me.
- 30:47Speaker 1: And he's never taken one, but he just said, nope,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I'm not gonna screw with them. Yeah. It's been a
- 30:53Speaker 1: good bargain so far. And I've been in some good
- 30:55Speaker 1: sharky waters, same with Greg. Been in some big time
- 30:59Speaker 1: sharky waters. But you guys lose your catches two sharks occasionally.
- 31:03Speaker 1: How's that play out? Fast? Fast, and violent? Depends on
- 31:07Speaker 1: what type of shark it is. Like, give me a
- 31:09Speaker 1: scenario when you lose your catch too shark. By the
- 31:14Speaker 1: time you started that sentence, too, now your catch is gone. Yeah. Yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 1: it's that fast. And it depends on how many are around,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you know, if it if it's one, sometimes you can
- 31:23Speaker 1: kind of fend them off of your catch, but if
- 31:25Speaker 1: it's more than one, it just can become like a
- 31:29Speaker 1: true freeding Fanzy. I was offshore of Texas and I
- 31:32Speaker 1: shot a really big amberjack and there's a lot of
- 31:35Speaker 1: sharks around. And once that, did you already know the
- 31:37Speaker 1: sharks were around? Yeah, we're targing. Well. I mean, you
- 31:40Speaker 1: get comfortable with sharks, you start being able to, you know,
- 31:43Speaker 1: learn their body language, like any animal. You know, they
- 31:45Speaker 1: start putting their pectoral fins down, humping their back, swimming
- 31:48Speaker 1: a little more erratically. It's you start getting a good
- 31:51Speaker 1: idea of when it's time to leave. Um, something like
- 31:54Speaker 1: a tiger shark that's a little more calculated. They slink
- 31:57Speaker 1: in and out of his ability. So sometimes you just
- 31:59Speaker 1: get in there's a big tiger sharking, and it's just
- 32:01Speaker 1: let's move. But um, but you don't like to be
- 32:04Speaker 1: in the vicinity of a tiger shark. Yeah, so I
- 32:06Speaker 1: was let's change a whole other stuff. Like I was
- 32:08Speaker 1: on a pinnacle out of South Africa and there was
- 32:11Speaker 1: four different types of shark on there, and um, there's
- 32:15Speaker 1: but there's a pretty big tiger shark. And you know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: most of the sharks you can just you watch them,
- 32:20Speaker 1: you know, okay, that one's but this tiger shark would
- 32:22Speaker 1: come up, fade out of his ability. Three minutes later
- 32:25Speaker 1: he'll be right behind you and within six ft you. Yeah. Yeah,
- 32:29Speaker 1: they're just very very stealthy calculated sharks. Um bulls. Bulls
- 32:35Speaker 1: are just super aggressive. I mean, there's there's a lot
- 32:38Speaker 1: of aggressive sharks, but yeah, there's just a few. They're
- 32:40Speaker 1: a little a little more of a handful. Big is
- 32:42Speaker 1: the is the tiger shark to uh fot somewhere in
- 32:47Speaker 1: there was a pretty healthy when they get bigger than that,
- 32:49Speaker 1: But that's big enough to Like I said, they're very stealthy.
- 32:52Speaker 1: So yes, you kind of kind of decide if you
- 32:56Speaker 1: want to deal with them or not. That particular pinnacle,
- 32:58Speaker 1: I made the bad, bad move. I shot a kuta
- 33:02Speaker 1: um and it was just yeah, I actually landed the fish.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I got the fish on the boat, but I was
- 33:08Speaker 1: just I threw the fish on the boat and jumped
- 33:10Speaker 1: in the boat right away, and it was just like,
- 33:12Speaker 1: oh God. And then I ended up nothing happened. I mean,
- 33:15Speaker 1: I had a couple of people in the water kind
- 33:17Speaker 1: of helping me out, but I probably shouldn't have pulled
- 33:19Speaker 1: the trigger in that circumstance. But um, you learn to
- 33:22Speaker 1: deal with them. It's just there there, just like anything.
- 33:25Speaker 1: So when they take your catch, they'll come right up
- 33:27Speaker 1: to you. Yeah, I mean there there's times where you
- 33:30Speaker 1: do not defend your catch. You just like that when
- 33:32Speaker 1: I was talking about Texas and that was one of
- 33:34Speaker 1: those things I shot, you know, around a dred pound
- 33:37Speaker 1: class amberjack. We're actually targeting wahoo and it's in a
- 33:41Speaker 1: wintertime off of Texas and there's just a lot of
- 33:44Speaker 1: sharks in there. They're very aggressive in it. So I
- 33:47Speaker 1: shot a big amberjack. It was big enough where I
- 33:50Speaker 1: thought I stoned it. I didn't, and it just did
- 33:51Speaker 1: one or two tail twitches and sank under the mark.
- 33:54Speaker 1: And once that happened, it was just amberjack handoff. It
- 33:58Speaker 1: was just shark to shark to shark. Like five minutes
- 34:00Speaker 1: was my float being dragged around by the sharks. Yeah,
- 34:02Speaker 1: that's the worst. That's the worst part. The fish so wet,
- 34:06Speaker 1: your fish is gone. We shoot cable in this situation,
- 34:11Speaker 1: like a like a five pound multi strand cable, and
- 34:16Speaker 1: when it's no big deal, they take your fish. But
- 34:19Speaker 1: in the meantime that cable gets in one of the
- 34:22Speaker 1: shark's mouse because as they just devour, they're running everywhere
- 34:27Speaker 1: and now you're a gear is just going and that
- 34:30Speaker 1: it can take twenty minutes to get your gear back
- 34:33Speaker 1: and you all you want to do is fish. So
- 34:36Speaker 1: my floats going that way. I've got to wait for
- 34:38Speaker 1: the boat. My buddies laughing at me, and my float
- 34:41Speaker 1: is just running off because the shark is now panicking.
- 34:44Speaker 1: It was eating the frenzies over and now it's panicking
- 34:47Speaker 1: because it's caught up in the cable or the cable
- 34:49Speaker 1: in its mouth. They eventually spit it out, but that
- 34:52Speaker 1: could be a mile a mile and a half later, Like,
- 34:56Speaker 1: come on, man, just take the fish. Let me have
- 34:59Speaker 1: my gear back so I can get back in the boat,
- 35:01Speaker 1: get back up current, and I can get my own fish. Um, Gregg,
- 35:06Speaker 1: you said it's on interesting to me yesterday where you
- 35:08Speaker 1: talked about, uh that free diving or spear fishing. I
- 35:16Speaker 1: can't remember what you were saying. Reveals all the things
- 35:19Speaker 1: that are wrong with your body. Absolutely, absolutely, like all
- 35:23Speaker 1: your problems on the body check. Just go free diving
- 35:26Speaker 1: and you're like, man, that hurts and that doesn't feel good,
- 35:28Speaker 1: and I drink too much coffee and you're like heart problems,
- 35:32Speaker 1: breath problems, long issues. It's very tax everything. And that's
- 35:38Speaker 1: why as you kind of go through the sport, you
- 35:41Speaker 1: kind of you do this isn't this trip wasn't the
- 35:43Speaker 1: best example. But um, when you start pushing, you know,
- 35:47Speaker 1: if you're going to do a serious hardcore dive, you
- 35:50Speaker 1: tailor your you tailor your diet to that trip. Something.
- 35:55Speaker 1: If I'm doing a lot of deep diving. I will
- 35:57Speaker 1: basically hydrate in the morning, maybe a little oatmeal, do
- 36:02Speaker 1: a lot of stretching, and I won't eat till dinner.
- 36:04Speaker 1: I might have a light, light, light snack, but it's
- 36:06Speaker 1: just hydration all day. Um. And that's that's to defend from,
- 36:11Speaker 1: you know, acid reflux. That's you know, it's just as
- 36:14Speaker 1: far as changing metabolism, your stomach having to digest everything.
- 36:16Speaker 1: It's just it reveals kind of everything funky or how
- 36:21Speaker 1: your body reacts to different things. And I can drink
- 36:23Speaker 1: coffee all day long. I go have two cups in
- 36:26Speaker 1: the morning and go free diving. I will have the
- 36:28Speaker 1: worst acid reflex ever. That's two things I noticed is
- 36:31Speaker 1: we I had a cup of coffee one morning, we
- 36:32Speaker 1: go out, and the reflex, as you explained, is because
- 36:36Speaker 1: you're you're spending all your time upside down because you
- 36:38Speaker 1: dive head first, and it's really it's hard to dive
- 36:42Speaker 1: at an angle. Well, you shouldn't. Generally you should not
- 36:46Speaker 1: go and you can if you if you like. No,
- 36:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna tuck under this kelp and dive down an
- 36:50Speaker 1: angle into the reef. That's fine, But generally, depending on
- 36:52Speaker 1: what you're doing. You want to try to go straight up,
- 36:54Speaker 1: so you're supposed to do that. I started, I started
- 36:57Speaker 1: to think it was just easier to go straight up
- 36:59Speaker 1: and down. I mean it just when. Again, it depends
- 37:01Speaker 1: on what you're doing. If you're if you have a
- 37:03Speaker 1: link ond hole or you know a reef to check
- 37:05Speaker 1: at eight ft, you don't want to go to an
- 37:06Speaker 1: angle because you're gonna add how many feet? It's the
- 37:09Speaker 1: most efficient way down. But the thing I noticed, and
- 37:13Speaker 1: when you're gearing up to go down, um, it's like
- 37:16Speaker 1: a there's a relaxation, calming of your heart and a
- 37:19Speaker 1: breathing sequence. You go through. One cup of coffee. I
- 37:25Speaker 1: was okay, and I was having some acid reflux. I'm
- 37:29Speaker 1: upside down. All your ship from your stomach is coming
- 37:31Speaker 1: up into your throat. A second cup of coffee, and
- 37:34Speaker 1: I like a second cup of coffee. I realized that
- 37:37Speaker 1: I could because you're laying there and you're so focused
- 37:39Speaker 1: on your heart. I could feel the second cup of coffee. Yeah,
- 37:44Speaker 1: I'll down. Man. I was gonna tell you not to
- 37:48Speaker 1: drink the coffee. But I thought, slowly, like that second cup,
- 37:54Speaker 1: I actually which I was so aware of it, so
- 37:59Speaker 1: aware of it in the terms of how my heart
- 38:01Speaker 1: was like just to try and to like call my
- 38:04Speaker 1: breath and get my heart down. And I think that's
- 38:06Speaker 1: one of the reasons in free diving you kind of
- 38:08Speaker 1: start learning more about your bodies because you're it's it's
- 38:11Speaker 1: like a type of yoga, right, You're focused on your breathing,
- 38:14Speaker 1: you feel everything, You're kind of and a whole different
- 38:17Speaker 1: mindset and um, and you're kind of shut off really right,
- 38:21Speaker 1: You're trying to shut your mind off and slow your
- 38:23Speaker 1: body down. And that's kind of where you start learning
- 38:26Speaker 1: a little bit more of what works and what doesn't,
- 38:28Speaker 1: because you know something like acid reflex, which if you're
- 38:30Speaker 1: just running around throughout you might just burp up some
- 38:32Speaker 1: stuff and go about your day. Where this is I
- 38:34Speaker 1: mean it is, oh yeah, into your snorkel. Yeah that's
- 38:37Speaker 1: a drag, man, if you don't lose it. Yeah, well yeah,
- 38:40Speaker 1: and then I then I outright then I outrighte bombited
- 38:44Speaker 1: like I'm talking full barrel, full barrel, Like dude, drank
- 38:49Speaker 1: too much alcohol, having a bad flu. It wasn't pretty
- 38:54Speaker 1: vomiting and it was coffee color. Did you notice that?
- 38:57Speaker 1: And then I slipped right in and took fish right
- 38:59Speaker 1: out from under off. It was nice. No, man, I
- 39:03Speaker 1: had some full on vomits because I was drinking saltwater
- 39:06Speaker 1: and I was probably a little bit seasick, which I
- 39:07Speaker 1: didn't realize happened when you're riding in the waves, but
- 39:10Speaker 1: mostly drinking salt water, drinking too much coffee, probably dehydrated,
- 39:14Speaker 1: puking all that junk off to it is miserable. And
- 39:17Speaker 1: that's one thing hard. You know, when you're traveling a lot,
- 39:19Speaker 1: spear fishing your first day or two a lot of
- 39:21Speaker 1: times can be a breaking per because you're traveling, you're
- 39:23Speaker 1: a little off, you're generally dehydrated, you're tired. It's just
- 39:26Speaker 1: a lot of things all at once. But yeah, I
- 39:31Speaker 1: feel that it's a kind of fitness that you'd get
- 39:33Speaker 1: that would be applicable to a lot of other stuff.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Like there's some fitness that doesn't really matter, Like it matters.
- 39:38Speaker 1: It's cool, you know if you get like your you
- 39:41Speaker 1: do enough weights for your neck gets all thick and
- 39:43Speaker 1: ask some people think that's cool, right, but like it
- 39:46Speaker 1: doesn't translate. But I feel like spear fishing fitness. Yes, uh,
- 39:54Speaker 1: why you why you give me the labban smirk because
- 39:57Speaker 1: I want to hear there. They say, yes, yeah, we know,
- 40:01Speaker 1: we know a lot about fit, but it's different. It's
- 40:03Speaker 1: not aerobic, it's anaerobic. What do you mean. Yeah, when
- 40:09Speaker 1: we're running, we're aerobic. It doesn't translate to like it doesn't.
- 40:16Speaker 1: It's not broadly applicable that fitness. It helps if you're
- 40:20Speaker 1: a good aerobic uh fitness, it goes along long. That's
- 40:24Speaker 1: a good point, man, you're not. The goal is to
- 40:27Speaker 1: not get all high, right, So the physical strength and
- 40:31Speaker 1: your aerobic strength allows you to recover faster and essentially
- 40:36Speaker 1: stay in the water longer. And the aerobic strength helps
- 40:41Speaker 1: your heartbeat because your heartbeat goes through massive changes in
- 40:44Speaker 1: the dives. The moment you hold your breath, your heartbeet
- 40:47Speaker 1: goes down, you make your dive, your a million reflux
- 40:50Speaker 1: kicks in. Your heartbeat goes down further. As you turn
- 40:54Speaker 1: to come back up and you hit the surface. Your
- 40:58Speaker 1: that first breath, your heartbeats pikes. For example, you might
- 41:02Speaker 1: start your dive at typical Let's just take you for example,
- 41:08Speaker 1: you probably started at nine beats per minute. I have
- 41:11Speaker 1: no idea, that's your guest, yeahs per minute, Greg, and
- 41:17Speaker 1: I might be able to get down to about seventy
- 41:20Speaker 1: five because we're moving a lot right in the water.
- 41:24Speaker 1: You're probably a ninety. You went down, you probably dropped
- 41:27Speaker 1: from ninety to the high seventies maybe low seventies through
- 41:36Speaker 1: your first couple of days here, which is pretty significant.
- 41:40Speaker 1: When you hit the surface that first breath, your heart
- 41:42Speaker 1: was probably back to five within seconds, cycling, cycling new air,
- 41:49Speaker 1: cycling out nitrogen, and then recover. Greg he might start
- 41:57Speaker 1: a dive at seventy five and might get down into
- 42:04Speaker 1: the high thirties, low forties because of training. A million
- 42:09Speaker 1: reflects and he hits the surface, his heart read will
- 42:12Speaker 1: will spike, cycle through, come back down. So you're aerobic
- 42:21Speaker 1: strength's huge for that right, tons of pressure on your
- 42:24Speaker 1: heart and your lungs and your vascular system. Yeah, you know, okay.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Kind of what I meant to was, um, I had
- 42:38Speaker 1: an observation recent Let me backup. I had observation, we
- 42:40Speaker 1: see where No, I'll get there, I'll get there. I've
- 42:44Speaker 1: had a lot of knee problems, and it got worse
- 42:48Speaker 1: and worse in my head because I thought I needed
- 42:50Speaker 1: a knee surgery. So then all I could think about
- 42:53Speaker 1: was how bad my knee hurt. But then I go
- 42:56Speaker 1: to an rithopedic doctor. He does his old magic, tells me,
- 43:01Speaker 1: in fact, I don't need a knee surgery. My knees
- 43:03Speaker 1: look fine. I probably have like a some band that
- 43:08Speaker 1: runs from your hip. Yeah, He's like, you know, you
- 43:11Speaker 1: can do some pt but that's it's tugging on there
- 43:13Speaker 1: and that's why the pain drifts around. And you could
- 43:15Speaker 1: do some stuff and it's tight. And then all of
- 43:18Speaker 1: a sudden, about two days later, my knee problems gone.
- 43:23Speaker 1: I said, to the honest man, the membrane that separates
- 43:28Speaker 1: my brain from my body is not very thick. And
- 43:33Speaker 1: Yanna said, there is no membrane separating your brain from
- 43:37Speaker 1: your body. So when I mentioned the fitness level, I
- 43:42Speaker 1: think one of the things I'm thinking about is the
- 43:45Speaker 1: level of that would be applicable to other things in life,
- 43:47Speaker 1: Like hunting is the level of uh. There's a high
- 43:55Speaker 1: level of GUR, like GRR. There's a high level of girl,
- 44:00Speaker 1: a high level of focus, and a high level of
- 44:05Speaker 1: um willingness to subject oneself to something that some part
- 44:09Speaker 1: of your body is thinking, let's just stop doing this
- 44:11Speaker 1: and go home, Like it's so much easier to not
- 44:18Speaker 1: go spear fishing. It just it's easier to stay on
- 44:22Speaker 1: the boat and catch ocean white fish, chunks, the squid,
- 44:25Speaker 1: the honest face. The whole first day was looked like that,
- 44:28Speaker 1: just like why in the world would you put? Why
- 44:31Speaker 1: in the world subject yourself to this? Because when it clicks,
- 44:35Speaker 1: it clicks, and it's really good. But I mean the
- 44:37Speaker 1: ability to like do that's thing. And and watching you
- 44:40Speaker 1: guys the first day we got in so to get
- 44:44Speaker 1: us up to speed, we went out on't you guys
- 44:47Speaker 1: explain that what we did to practice the line explain
- 44:51Speaker 1: the line grabbing. Uh, before you explain the line grab
- 44:55Speaker 1: and I'll say that right away. When you guys got
- 44:57Speaker 1: in the water, I just noticed that when you guys
- 45:00Speaker 1: are you guys are calm and methodical on land. Yeah,
- 45:05Speaker 1: which maybe you're like very organized, very methodical. I've never
- 45:10Speaker 1: been called organized. Ties your stuff is organized. You have
- 45:14Speaker 1: organized brains. Okay, you're like very you're purposeful, you're you're
- 45:20Speaker 1: you're you're pragmatic. Um, you guys seem like like highly
- 45:25Speaker 1: capable at a lot of stuff, right right, thank you
- 45:31Speaker 1: Like you're not like you for instance, you don't drink alcohol, right,
- 45:35Speaker 1: which is like a thing you've decided. That's just like
- 45:39Speaker 1: you made a thing, like was there to gain from it,
- 45:41Speaker 1: was there to lose from it? Like you run calcular,
- 45:42Speaker 1: like you're calculating in your head, like your life, and
- 45:46Speaker 1: you seem like that and you get in the water
- 45:48Speaker 1: and it becomes more amplified. You guys are so like
- 45:51Speaker 1: calm and slow and deliberate and purposeful. Even when you
- 45:56Speaker 1: go to put your hand to your nose to plug it,
- 45:58Speaker 1: it's like you've done that ten thousand times and you
- 46:02Speaker 1: thought about how one pinches once. Everything just seems so
- 46:09Speaker 1: like I do it this way, and it's because it
- 46:12Speaker 1: works good now, it's what it feels like. It's just
- 46:17Speaker 1: like I get the one. I'm like, right, that's my
- 46:21Speaker 1: like in my head, it's I'm going. You guys are going.
- 46:25Speaker 1: It's like in the water. Yeah, I feel like the
- 46:29Speaker 1: hump For me, it was three days. The first day
- 46:32Speaker 1: was a lot of that, Yeah, there's too much thrashing
- 46:39Speaker 1: going around, and then by today I'm just like, yeah,
- 46:42Speaker 1: just chill, you're in the water. We drove up on
- 46:45Speaker 1: your link perfectly flat, relaxed. He'd return, He'd return to
- 46:49Speaker 1: the womb man. If you kick your fins, like if
- 46:53Speaker 1: you make like a ninety instead of leaving your feet
- 46:57Speaker 1: kind of I don't know what that position is, but
- 47:00Speaker 1: your toes down below your ankles. That seemed to drag
- 47:03Speaker 1: my feet down, and as soon as I would kick
- 47:05Speaker 1: my like with my ankle with my ankles, that would
- 47:08Speaker 1: make my feet come up right up high. Yeah. It's
- 47:11Speaker 1: a lot of its body position kind of figuring out
- 47:13Speaker 1: where how to sit and what's comfortable. You guys said
- 47:15Speaker 1: you like to lay like a like a log drifting
- 47:18Speaker 1: in the ocean. Hopefully when you're looking down. Yeah, um, yeah,
- 47:24Speaker 1: I want you to explain the hand pulling down thing.
- 47:26Speaker 1: But to get to another point about the calmness is
- 47:28Speaker 1: I learned how to look at you and know when
- 47:30Speaker 1: you were going to dive because you look like a
- 47:35Speaker 1: like a dead seal. Yeah, Like your arms you're kind
- 47:39Speaker 1: of like you look like a like a somewhat like
- 47:41Speaker 1: a passing glance. So I'd be like, oh, there's a
- 47:43Speaker 1: drowned person. Oh yeah, just sort of like floating in
- 47:46Speaker 1: the ocean. Your arms that kind of go down, and
- 47:48Speaker 1: I'd be like, oh, Greg's gonna dive, and you just
- 47:51Speaker 1: look like you're like totally like giving yourself to the sea. Yeah,
- 47:55Speaker 1: I mean that's to get your heart rate right. But
- 47:57Speaker 1: then if I got close to you that I could
- 47:59Speaker 1: hear the weird breathing like the cleansing breast, but the
- 48:02Speaker 1: cleansing breast, yeah, and then I can start to listen
- 48:05Speaker 1: for that. But yeah, you first just looked like it
- 48:07Speaker 1: like you were dead but going or whatever you're doing
- 48:11Speaker 1: hopefully slower than that blowing a sailboat, baby paper sailboat
- 48:21Speaker 1: without making the water ripple. Yeah, But then there's those
- 48:27Speaker 1: little somewhat hyper breaths he does. He has a cleansing
- 48:32Speaker 1: breath routine. I don't do that. And the thing that you, guys,
- 48:35Speaker 1: something about breathing that really stuck in my head is
- 48:38Speaker 1: when you take your last breath that you're filling like
- 48:42Speaker 1: three stages. Yeah, you're like filling your balls with air, imagine,
- 48:46Speaker 1: and then the stomach and then you top it off
- 48:51Speaker 1: at the tippy top of your chest to be chopping
- 48:54Speaker 1: your shoulders back. It's a great way to It's like
- 48:57Speaker 1: you just imagine, just like this empty can evity filling
- 49:00Speaker 1: from the bottom up with air. I went up liking
- 49:03Speaker 1: that quite a bit. I know when I do it right,
- 49:06Speaker 1: there's no resistance. My stomach just floats up. My chest
- 49:12Speaker 1: opens up right, lower thoracic, upper thoracic. Uh. Little scapulic
- 49:19Speaker 1: Rotation's word. I like scapulic rotation. And if you could
- 49:27Speaker 1: see it, you'd really understand it. And it comes up
- 49:31Speaker 1: and then my neck feels like it gets a little
- 49:34Speaker 1: And when right when I'm pulling that snorkele out, my
- 49:38Speaker 1: cheeks just puff and it's just one sack. And when
- 49:43Speaker 1: I make that dive and I know, oh yeah, I
- 49:46Speaker 1: clear hands free. Did you notice that? And you get
- 49:50Speaker 1: a little bit of that now? And then I do
- 49:52Speaker 1: I mix it up? Yeah, tell the name of the
- 49:55Speaker 1: two ways? Clear friends A line valsalva yea, I've been friends.
- 49:59Speaker 1: I think you're a friends. Now your friends friends, I'm
- 50:01Speaker 1: hardcore friends. Then man, so yeah, but you do you're
- 50:05Speaker 1: a little clear at the surface. You start at the
- 50:07Speaker 1: top and never stop clear clear clear. You don't wait
- 50:13Speaker 1: till your like years are going to blow up, and
- 50:16Speaker 1: then decide to clear. Explain how we started out our
- 50:20Speaker 1: trip started off the trip the long ass boat ride,
- 50:23Speaker 1: long boat ride. Drank a bunch of coffee. What you're
- 50:26Speaker 1: not supposed to do? You had a big breakfast and
- 50:28Speaker 1: large fishing boat, and a large fishing might have passing
- 50:31Speaker 1: glance resembly yacht. Maybe we might have dabbled in the
- 50:34Speaker 1: untrained I might look like a yeah, I think the
- 50:37Speaker 1: definition is thirty nine ft. Anything over could be classified
- 50:41Speaker 1: as a yacht. Just a bunch of dudes. Uh. So
- 50:45Speaker 1: we put a line out for you, and this is
- 50:48Speaker 1: not typical of a spear fishing trip, um, but it's
- 50:53Speaker 1: a great way to warm up. It's not typical, No,
- 50:56Speaker 1: I mean your average you're teaching, you're teaching your mentor
- 50:59Speaker 1: there you go, oh um, And sometimes we will if
- 51:02Speaker 1: you're if you're planning on doing deep diving on your
- 51:04Speaker 1: spear fishing trip, you might spend ten minutes throwing the
- 51:07Speaker 1: line out and doing some pulldowns. But for you guys,
- 51:10Speaker 1: we set up a buoy at what was it thirty
- 51:13Speaker 1: two ft? I think it was the bottom somewhere around there, um,
- 51:16Speaker 1: which the deepest what you've ever been as what fifteen ish?
- 51:20Speaker 1: I mean in my head, I'd be shocked to hear
- 51:22Speaker 1: that I dove, because, like I said, in the lake
- 51:25Speaker 1: where I grew up, the deepest place in that lake
- 51:27Speaker 1: was twenty three ft. And I don't know that it
- 51:30Speaker 1: was the deepest hole we went, which is done by
- 51:31Speaker 1: buckskin bend. But you were now and then dived down
- 51:35Speaker 1: pass the drop off and stick your hand and experienced
- 51:38Speaker 1: how cold the muck was on the bottom of the lake.
- 51:40Speaker 1: But no, I hadn't. I had definitely not dove board.
- 51:44Speaker 1: So we set the line it, you know, basically one atmosphere,
- 51:48Speaker 1: probably eighteen feet maybe it was the word if I
- 51:52Speaker 1: really was going for it. Yeah, And and we put
- 51:55Speaker 1: the put the wait at about thirty three ft about
- 51:59Speaker 1: an atmosphere. And the big thing with that is that's
- 52:02Speaker 1: where you experience your biggest lung compression. So it becomes
- 52:05Speaker 1: at about that point, that's the biggest part where you're
- 52:09Speaker 1: equalizing will become harder. Um. So basically set up a
- 52:13Speaker 1: booye with a line going down to about thirty three
- 52:15Speaker 1: ft and what you do a bunch of weight, a
- 52:18Speaker 1: bunch of weight on the bottom, and you need at
- 52:19Speaker 1: least twenty pounds. You should have twenty pounds that are
- 52:21Speaker 1: a little bit more pounds, and the boys just drifting
- 52:24Speaker 1: with the weight on it drifting. We we tied it
- 52:26Speaker 1: off to the boat because there was a slight current,
- 52:28Speaker 1: so it doesn't float off. I mean, it doesn't need
- 52:30Speaker 1: to hit doesn't need to hit the bottom. You can
- 52:31Speaker 1: just hang the weight off. Generally, yeah, you generally you
- 52:34Speaker 1: don't want it on the bottom. Um, you want a
- 52:36Speaker 1: little off the bottom. And you start by not even kicking.
- 52:40Speaker 1: And some people actually not even wear the fins at
- 52:42Speaker 1: this point. They'll just jump in, no fins um and
- 52:45Speaker 1: slowly start, you know, doing your breathing process. Getting water
- 52:49Speaker 1: on your face kicks in that mammalian dive reflex, slows
- 52:52Speaker 1: everything down, and you start pulling down and you start
- 52:56Speaker 1: equalizing basically every other poll. Right, so you're pulling clear,
- 53:00Speaker 1: pull clear, like every time your hand comes off clear. Yeah,
- 53:04Speaker 1: basically clearing anyr way down. And that basically one for
- 53:06Speaker 1: you guys. A big thing was um we had we
- 53:09Speaker 1: had talked about clearing with the friends method before, but
- 53:13Speaker 1: that was to try to see how you guys were
- 53:15Speaker 1: clearing and to do it inverted. Yeah. Right, you can
- 53:19Speaker 1: walk around all day upright. Yeah. Well yeah, I mean, Ben,
- 53:23Speaker 1: we've been friends and all the time in the office
- 53:25Speaker 1: and everything, we're friends friends friends, but we weren't friends
- 53:29Speaker 1: and we were hanging each other by the ankles and
- 53:32Speaker 1: friends like that. Yeah, upside down and add pressure. Body
- 53:36Speaker 1: starts to do a couple of different things. Check me
- 53:38Speaker 1: if I want to walk the listeners through what I'm
- 53:40Speaker 1: talking about, and check me if I want to mess up. Uh.
- 53:44Speaker 1: To clear property while spear fishing, you need to learn
- 53:48Speaker 1: how to pop your ears by not without moving your diaphragm.
- 53:57Speaker 1: That's that's correct. I mean, what do you mean He's correct?
- 54:01Speaker 1: Absolutely true, it is. But there's even if you go
- 54:04Speaker 1: further into the into the like competition world, there's even
- 54:07Speaker 1: debate about how efficient the friends technique is. But like
- 54:10Speaker 1: for your everyday recreational person, friendz will is basically okay,
- 54:15Speaker 1: just let me just do it again, Like, don't don't
- 54:17Speaker 1: parse hairs. You know, parsing hair is picture taking the
- 54:20Speaker 1: hairs and slicing the hair four times. All right, you
- 54:27Speaker 1: do it? You tell people. Okay, So what you don't
- 54:29Speaker 1: want to do or what you advised me to try
- 54:34Speaker 1: on a conference call is the other? Is this another
- 54:36Speaker 1: mentors the mentor moment. This is the fourth problem I've
- 54:40Speaker 1: had my mentor. Now he's backing out on things he
- 54:44Speaker 1: explained to me because he's imagining his spearfishing buddies doing that. Yeah,
- 54:50Speaker 1: but well yeah, that's only part of the story. As
- 54:55Speaker 1: a listener, you nailed it, okay, So picture that you,
- 55:00Speaker 1: the listener, take a moment, grab pitch your nose, and
- 55:05Speaker 1: just blow with all your might into your ears. Pop lately,
- 55:08Speaker 1: blow blow lightly to your ears. Pop, Why you give
- 55:11Speaker 1: me the lavian smirking. It's just watch you do this? Okay,
- 55:15Speaker 1: And you got that cute voice calling you plug your nose.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Imagine that if you're doing the friends wal technique. Correct,
- 55:24Speaker 1: you are doing with your throat what you do when
- 55:28Speaker 1: gurgling mouthwash, you're shutting off. You are isolating with your
- 55:33Speaker 1: epiglottis your lungs. Yes. Yeah, there's a horrible YouTube video
- 55:37Speaker 1: that Greg loves that explains I don't think I loved it.
- 55:44Speaker 1: It will explain in depth what's going. Greg loves the
- 55:47Speaker 1: video and loves watching the person does a good job
- 55:50Speaker 1: explaining what it is. So I didn't think, so I
- 55:53Speaker 1: didn't learn, I didn't understand it. So I had a
- 55:54Speaker 1: conference called Greg, thank you yet plug for your dive shop.
- 55:59Speaker 1: So you so you're gardening mouthwash? So most people struggle
- 56:06Speaker 1: with being able to know what their soft palet is
- 56:10Speaker 1: and how to isolate their EPI glasses, and for me,
- 56:14Speaker 1: the simplest way to explain is that you know, you know,
- 56:17Speaker 1: if you are gurgling mouth wash, you are controlling epiglass. Right,
- 56:21Speaker 1: You're basically shutting everything off. If you weren't, you either
- 56:24Speaker 1: choke on it or go into your stomach. Right, So
- 56:26Speaker 1: it's basically shutting everything off. And that way you can
- 56:29Speaker 1: use your basically um EPI glass and you're you know,
- 56:33Speaker 1: you're upper respiratory system to clear your ears. Yeah, if
- 56:37Speaker 1: you will, the listener can take their tongue, explore the
- 56:42Speaker 1: roof of their mouth and if you go where you
- 56:45Speaker 1: put a diaphragm, call, that's your hard palet. Go back
- 56:48Speaker 1: and there's a little soft area. Why do you give
- 56:50Speaker 1: me the smirk again? I'm right now, I'm working my tongue.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Bring your tongue back and there's a soft spot back there.
- 57:01Speaker 1: If you are doing the Frinzal clearing method, you close
- 57:06Speaker 1: your gargling deal, take your tongue and you're kind of
- 57:11Speaker 1: driving your tongue up into the soft pallet and creating
- 57:15Speaker 1: a little that that's like the feeling that I had
- 57:19Speaker 1: and like you're like it's basically air pop in your
- 57:24Speaker 1: ears and you're not doing anything with your chest. No,
- 57:27Speaker 1: and that that's the big thing is you're basically you
- 57:29Speaker 1: want your soft palate, which is if you put your
- 57:31Speaker 1: tongue even further back, there's that soft part and that's
- 57:34Speaker 1: your soft pellet, and you want that actually in a
- 57:36Speaker 1: neutral position. So if you do an example of if
- 57:39Speaker 1: you can't isolate your soft palets, if you're doing a
- 57:42Speaker 1: nettie pot um, if you can't kind of separate a
- 57:45Speaker 1: thing out that netti pottle, either the water will either
- 57:47Speaker 1: go into your mouth or go down your throat. If
- 57:50Speaker 1: you can isolate your soft palette, it will go in
- 57:52Speaker 1: one nostril out the other one. So it's it's learning
- 57:55Speaker 1: all the different parts of your your neck, your throat,
- 57:59Speaker 1: your soft out, your sinus, is all that other stuff.
- 58:02Speaker 1: And the reason this is great, the reason don't so funny.
- 58:07Speaker 1: If you keep diving, you won't even remember any of this.
- 58:11Speaker 1: I don't know, I got no idea what you guys
- 58:13Speaker 1: are talking about. You just clear I just clear it.
- 58:16Speaker 1: But clearing is the obstacle. So when when we first start,
- 58:23Speaker 1: it's the number one thing that people separates me from
- 58:26Speaker 1: having all of the fish in the ocean be dead
- 58:31Speaker 1: and I could clear, there would be no fish left
- 58:33Speaker 1: in the ocean. You can't clear. Yeah, thank god, thank god.
- 58:38Speaker 1: George scuba dove before he free dove technically and scuba diving.
- 58:45Speaker 1: You start to create good clearing habits. You got all
- 58:49Speaker 1: the time in the world. Damn hurry, it doesn't matter.
- 58:53Speaker 1: You're still creating. The clearing takes as long as a fingersnap, right,
- 59:00Speaker 1: So you really don't think about how it's hard to
- 59:02Speaker 1: clear it. It is not even something. The one time
- 59:08Speaker 1: I think about it is when I get plugged up
- 59:10Speaker 1: and at three three it's going my ears like oh yeah,
- 59:16Speaker 1: and then I've got a graph for a beginner. But
- 59:18Speaker 1: it's in the beginning. It's and I I'm trying to
- 59:24Speaker 1: do my dive and I have to stop waste precious
- 59:29Speaker 1: seconds to turn my head upright to catch a bad
- 59:32Speaker 1: If I really had a hard time catching the clear,
- 59:35Speaker 1: I gotta like snake around, give my head up right,
- 59:37Speaker 1: catch a clear, and then get back into my groove.
- 59:41Speaker 1: And that to eats of your time, And that goes
- 59:43Speaker 1: back to the point of man, it sure is a
- 59:45Speaker 1: lot of work. Yeah, it eats up your time, and
- 59:49Speaker 1: that's what keeps you from finding all the fish and
- 59:51Speaker 1: shooting them. But I would I would say you did
- 59:53Speaker 1: awfully well though, despite and we should probably give you
- 59:57Speaker 1: some props eventually, but we might wait. I don't want
- 59:59Speaker 1: to gonna want to get into that. Um, I just
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: wanted to be that I'm an aspiring spear fishure. But
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: that's the number one anyways, friends are Clearing is probably
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: the number one thing that will stop someone from being
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: successful and free diving. And if you can't clear, you
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: cannot descend, and it is what will stop you spear fish,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: but not you guys. Once told me that, like my
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: whole life, people have told me they can't clear. Mhm.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: But just the thing you have to learn how to do. Yeah,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's something I think when in our
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: early conversations is said, hey, put your hand on your
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: diaphragm and clear, and you said your diaphragm was clearing.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: You know that's that's not gonna work. Yeah, explain, just
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: we'll leave this, we'll put this rest. We'll start talking
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: about how you guys hunt plagic fish. But um, why
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: why can't you just use your whole diaphragm? Explain to
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: people what happens? So basically, if you're using your diaphragm,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: you're using your diaphragm to put pressure on your lungs
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: to move the air up into your basically throw it
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: into your um station tubes to equalize your ear dry.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: So if you're upside down, one air floats right, so
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: your your air is going to be against your diaphragm.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: You're having to push it. I think something like it's
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: a it's a long way to push it down to
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: get it down to your head to equalize your ear
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: drums because it wants the goal the other direction it does,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: and it's trying to go up through your fins basically
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: two toes. Yeah, so um, it'll urt a lot of times.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: It will work in very shallow water, but not as
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: as you go deeper it will not work. Yeah, and
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: right now you've worked your top thirty feet, you've learned
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: a frienzill No, no, okay, you're you're working on friends.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: I got better and better and better, and then my
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: ears got weird and funny. Now this is what's going
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: to happen when you break. When you finally break your
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: sixty ft mark, we're gonna have to teach you how
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: to do a mouth fill, so all the air it's
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: available in your mouth has now compressed. People that are
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: very good, that can control the epiglottis, will hold that
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: remaining air in their mouth. People who don't control the epiglottis,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: where does the air go? Gravity pressure? A lot of
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: time it gets pushed into their stomach and you lose
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: the air. Now you've made your dive, you're down at
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: sixty that's sixty six mask. You've got now add air
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: to your mask, and you have to add air back
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: into your mouth in order to equalize all your open
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: air cavities. So you do what's called a grouper. Like
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: a grouper call right, and that's something not not everyone.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: I don't. I don't grouper, call it depths until you
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: have to get until you get really deep. But some
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: people have to grouper call it sheller depths. Yeah, And
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I pre load my mouth with air right around sixty six.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: Always preload, So I've got plenty to deal with. Thinking
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: point right around six where you getting the air from
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: in your lungs, but it's compressed. So we do this
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: group or call. If you were to close your mouth
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: and take a little breast, you got little pressure and
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: now make a group of grunt from your stomach and
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: push it in your cheeks. See that you filled your cheeks.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: That's a group of call. And then close the upper
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: glottis and now you get to use that air to
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: make your mask comfortable and continue clearing. As you work
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: your way out, your starts wanting to suck your eyeballs out. Oh,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: it's miserable, miserable. It's it's miserable. And what depth is
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: that happening depends up the wall of your mask. Yeah,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: it makes a big difference. But for me personally, when
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: I'm diving, I'm preparing my mouth fill adding adding additional
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: air into the mask, and then from there it's smooth sailing.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: I can then clear comfortably up to problem. But I
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: hit about a hundred. If I don't have enough air
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: in my mouth, I physically can't do another group er
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: gulp because everything is so compressed, I can't get enough
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: air out. So if I don't preload and I've got
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: to stop my dive. Um. I've talked a lot of
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: times over the years about how houndsman like people that
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: hunt with hounds have more hold more units of information
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: in their head than most other kinds of hunters. Okay,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: there's more units of info in there than other kind
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: of hunters. Uh. I do think that, Uh, spear fishermen
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: have more you have more units of information packed in
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: their head than normal fishermen. I'd agree, because there's just
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: this whole other added thing about staying a live Yeah,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: a lot of body checks when you're underwater. Right, did
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: you find yourself when you were diving? Kind of going
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: how do I feel? No, but I found myself every
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: time I got in the water feeling like I must
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: have forgot some part of this pleasantly surprised sort of
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: getting the water and be like, oh yeah, my ships here,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: got the weight belt on the crowds straps. Good mentor
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: historical kind of once you got in. Let's say you
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: got in your mojo and you're out there and you're
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: making your dives. You were out there for a long time.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: I saw you swim maybe a mile along that reef
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: line and you're working your deal. Well, I'm lost in
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: the world then, but at what point are you diving
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: and going Okay, I feel really good right now. Yeah,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: that would strike me as I would take note because
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: it was the unusual feeling to feel good. I'd be like, wow,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I feel okay, this was? This was? Did you never
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: have a dive when you didn't think about diving and
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: you just dove? No? Was it always very deliberate, a
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: little bit of dresd like not looking forward to it?
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Why am I like? Maybe I'll just stay at the
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: surface and be like no, because that's like giving up
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: and dying. I need to go back down and like
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: messing my ears. I'll just keep listening to the Darth
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Vader breath going. Do you do you feel like the
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Darth Brader when you're breathing? I'm like, why am I
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: breathing like that? Just beat a chill that would for
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: like three breaths and then I cash myself. Yeah, the
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Darth Vader. But no, I loved it, loved it, But no,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: I'm not. I would take note if I felt comfortable
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: a little bit paranoia of the unknown. It's like going
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: through brush. It's like going through thick brush underwater to
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: be in the kelp. It's like the two things you
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: don't want, like in jet life generally, like you don't
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: want to be stuck underwater and you don't want to
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: be in thick rush. But here you are underwater in
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: thick brush with a ceiling above you that somehow you
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: have to penetrate when you come back. Oh yeah, you're
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: underwater trying to scout out a place where you can
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: come up and get a breath, looking for that sunbeam,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: looking for a sunbeams up through there and get a
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: breath of air. Oh man, okay, talk about hunting plagic.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: So this is interesting. We kind of covered whole hunting.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Hole hunting. Yep, it's its own thing. There's a there's
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: a lot of different styles hunting, uh, pelagics or a
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: whole How how do you you tell me? How do
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: you guys divide the world up? I would say blue
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: water and reef are the big is a brief lit
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: deep brief, deep brief, and then blue water blue water.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Let's start with reef people, a rough rundown on what
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: reef hunting is. Let's call reef six and less. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: sixty ft and lass um. Depends on where you're diving.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I mean, it's every every location. The cool thing about
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: the US is it has so many different regions with
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: different species of fish that it's just nothing's the same.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: You can go northern California is different than Southern California,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: which is different than you get down into Bahs, a
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: whole another thing. The northeast you getting the striper and
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: dog and all those fish. You go south of there,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: you getting a whole another set of fish. Florida has
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: both sides that are different sites of fish. It's just
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: I think in the US, the Hawaiians are probably the
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: best reef hunters. Sixty ft and less fast fish. You
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: you have to learn a lot of different techniques based
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: on what you're hunting in in in Hawaii, because it's
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: so sunny and there's such good visibility that you learn
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: to while you're looking down. You learn to look for
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: shadows because so you can stalk fish, so you can
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: put your body in that shadow. Have you ever been
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: on the highway driving along happy as a clam and
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: there's a highway patrolman under an overpath sitting in a shadow,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: and you're like, I never saw that guy. Same concept.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: You stick your body that shadow. I hope you don't
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: get bit by an eel and you wait, right. The
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Hawaiians are phenomenal with that. Yeah, Hawaiians in Florida, Yeah,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Floridians really good Floridians fall more in the deep brief.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: I mean the Hawaiians of course have a great deep brief. Um.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: And then doing that kind of hunt, because we did
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: a fair bit of it. You guys. Also you're kind
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: of scouting from the surface a little bit if you can,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: or you dive down to find the nooks and crannies.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: You'll go explore. But knows you a lot of times
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: will be looking down and you have a pretty good
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: eye for it. Yeah, because I would watch you looking
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: down when it was good clarity, and I wouldn't see,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: and then you'd go down and vanish into a hole
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: or vanish into a ledge that I wouldn't recognize. I
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: wouldn't see that, I wouldn't see the ledge. I wouldn't
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: realize there was like a little hidy hole down there. Yeah,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: you get an eye for it, Um. I guess I'm I.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: There's there's a couple of different types of spearfish, and
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: when i'm I'm the one that I will kick a
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: lot until I find I see what I like and
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and what I can read really well, and then I'll
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: stop and work the area. Some people will just methodically
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: inch by inch work or reef I'll kick until I
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: see something I like, whether it's bait or a certain
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: feature underwater, and you get trained kind of going, you know,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: the eel grass is laying this way, and you know,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: you learn how to read it what sways back and forth, going,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: Oh that's a hole. You know, I'm gonna go pick
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: up that hole, or you just get an efe for it.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: It's just like anything. It's just like you up up
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: in the mountains. You know, you have an eye for
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: you know what you're looking for and what specifically you
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: want to hunt in. Yeah, like little pockets are the
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: hold stuff. Like in one, you went down, shine a
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: flashlight into it, came and got me, and then we
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: went down together and shine a flash I was like
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: looking into a cupboard. Yeah, and there was a sheeps
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: that hide in there. Yeah. Yeah, And that's uh. You
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: just learn how to read certain reefs and and how
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: to hold on. I mean, I would say divers from
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: northern California are very very good hole hunters because that's
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: that's what we do all day, and that's where you
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: know the good fish are in the holes. The whole
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: hunter ground and pound ground. Okay, move on to plagic.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: This is the thing that was pretty interesting that we
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: did there. Now we're working with some attractants. We're not
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: chumming because that's all shark thing we're not cool with,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: but we're using the attracting right. So it's like people
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: generally don't want to chum in shark areas. You'll you'll
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: cut early. It just depends. I mean yellow tail. I
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: don't feel chumming for yellowtail over like a flasher works much. Yeah,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: it depends on what you're going for. And again, some
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: things you just have to keep simple. Floating flasher nice
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: and simple. You throw it out, it doesn't steal. And
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: you have a little throw flasher that you throw and
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: it hits the surface. Explain the floating flash because people
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: are gonna trust me. People not know what the hell
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: you're talking about. Like three people will imagine afloat that
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: looks like a chicken. It does, it does, and that's
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: filmed with foam, So your chickens filled with foam. It's
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: got fishing line on it, and hanging from that fishing
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: line are some flashers. It looks like a bunch of
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: fishing luers. Looks like a little spin spinner bait blades
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: exactly and on the bottom. Some like it. What's that
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: thing that we put on the line behind the banana
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: when we're fishing, called a flasher. It's called the flasher,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: dodgers and flashers, And we like to put a squid
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: on the bottom for decoration, to hide the weight. Oh,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: that's what he's on there for. And you got a
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: pom pom on the bottom of yours. Yeah, mine's a mine.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Looks like a miniature baseball from far away. It does
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: look really good. Yeah, it's a teaser that slays him.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: It also does really well on my engine prop, doesn't that?
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Captain george them? So you go out and hang this
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: thing in the water and we float with it. Yeah,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: like riding the current. Riding the current, relaxing and looking
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: for signs. This is just hovering over the suspended string
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: of Christmas ornaments hanging off. They're suspended vertically at about
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: depending on the visibility. Oh yeah, we should talk about that.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: We put it at a certain height on purpose. It
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: depends on what you can see right on the viz
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: and where we think those fish are going to be.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: We didn't tell you, but there was a thermal client
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: at about thirty We wanted to stay above that thermal client.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: We wanted to say above that thermal client for a
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: couple of reasons. Number one, we didn't want to spook
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: all of our bait. Our bait were great. You see
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: how happy they were. Tens of hundreds of thousands of
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: tuna crabs, the tuna crabs and yeah, and then the
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: bait bait and then the bait bait. They were happy,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: they were relaxed. If we kept making repetitive dives underneath
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: them and coming back up, they would get agitated and
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: disperse and disperse, and they would mess up our whole
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: mojo there. So we stayed on top of above all that.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: And that's really good. So we've got our hanging flasher,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: and then we utilize a throw flasher, which is again
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: our little fishing lure. But we throw it and then
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: it floats down and it reflects very very slowly, like
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: one ft two ft three ft right, and it goes
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: down and it shines, and then we dive down and
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: we get it. We pick it up and we look
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: up town left, right, and then in they come. Now
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: that the art of blue water hunting is being able
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: to see your fish incoming and being prepared for them.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Really good blue water hunters can pick out, can start
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: to pick out changes in the in the there the
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: water before the fish actually get there, so we see
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: dark shadows and that allows us to be a little
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: we can make an adjustment, so we can cut an
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: angle a little better. And because this thing is not
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: going to be stopping now and they're moving fast, they
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: blast through. Yeah. So in our blue water we got
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: yellow tail and a bonito. The yellow tail was in
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: a school. I think he had a group the yellow
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: tail I saw I had a group of twenty other
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: fish with them. Bonita, No, the yellow tail. You saw
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a school with twenty yellow tail? Oh? Did you too?
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: No mine, which I'll get to trust me. It was
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: a two pack and they were lost. I'm just wondering where,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: where and when you saw that? I didn't hear about this.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: Twenty pack of yellow tail was right at dust glass
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: what we were doing last night at dusk with the
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: with the ghosts of the evil people swimming around in
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: the ocean. We had multiple schools come through. The first
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: school that came through came through so fast there was
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: nothing that I could do about it. I just let
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: it be. Came back to the surface, read through my flasher, relaxed, flasher,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: went down. I went back down. Then that school came
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: back around, and I took that first fish, hauled the
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: back of the boat, got him up quickly, threw him
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: in the boat, and went back out. When I was
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: rebanding my gun, I threw my flasher and the school
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: came back around, but this time twice as fast. They
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: were smoking through the water fast fast, and I couldn't
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: get my gun loaded fast enough. So they did their deal,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: and then we continued to stay in front of the bait.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: Right the bait kind of created like a vertical wall,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: and that was where the two currents were merging. And
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: it's a beautiful thing when that happens. And you shot
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: that tasty little oh, that little benito, Yeah, and he
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: comes halling as through. Now that was a school of three.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: Four came in super quick. I was on the surface.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: I just rolled the shoulder and let the spear fly.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Didn't no aim, no, there's no time for any of that.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: It's purely instinctual, slice him right through the gut. Unfortunately,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: the spear went all the way through, and they go
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: so berserk that he just wrapped himself up and I
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: pulled him up. Blessed. He was what eighteen inches long?
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: And we ate him in a bath of soy sauce
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: and top of teal with some lapino soaked in lime juice.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: So good, good the yellow tail. Now, I'll tell you
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: my I'll revel you with my uh you can, I'll
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: tell you about the yellow tail story. We were that,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: like I said, they were lost up against the cliff
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: in how many feet of water? I'd say fifteen twenty
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: was right in the range, but most like your fish
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: was laying in about the ground in fact, And I
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: look and with a nineties sell me send me a gun.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: And I look and I'm like and they come past me,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: and I'm like, you gotta be shipping me, and uh
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: they're big, Like, well, how big was when I got
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Here's about fifteen I'd say in that fifteen ish range.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: He comes past yellow tail man like a sickle on
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: his tail, and they come past, and I turned and
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: they go out of you, And I'm thinking to myself,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: I have never in my life caught up with a fish.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: And I almost was like, yeah, never mind, but I'm like, yeah,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I'll try to go over their direction. So I started
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: swimming and catch up with them. Something must have distracted
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: him or something, and they cut left and I shot
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: the one you ment was right there. No, I couldn't
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: find my mentor. Had my mentor been nearby? Um the
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: rest of us heard someone screaming, had my mentor not
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: done what he had done to me earlier when I
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: was drowning, which does not be around. In this case,
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: my mentor's lack of attentive cost him a fish. I
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: did put you on that line, though, I said, swim
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: in front of Yes, you did, because the other the
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: other yellow tail in the tupac. This is really startling
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: to me. It was like, have you guys ever hunted
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Canada geese? Or a double will come over and you'll
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: hit one of the geese, and sometimes you get like
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: three or four pass throughs by the other goose because
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: they made for life, or to put it, they it's
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: a little bit more complicated. Or let's say someone were
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: to uh shoot a yearling deer. Let's just say and
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: or let's say somewhere to shoot a dough with the
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: yearling deer and then watch the yearling. One could imagine
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: how it might hang around for a while the fish
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: his buddy is just like cutting cookies around me. And
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: at one point time I'm not joking, it past eighteen
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: inches in front of my face, and I'm thinking, Man,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: a good mentor would be would have just shots, like
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: could put a box of spear gun darts into this
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: thing nowhere to be found. And um, you should feel
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: pretty lucky about that experience because it's pretty It's knew
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: it's insane special the second a half, and I knew
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: that it was special. Um when trying to hail, uh
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: some help to get the other fish. That's what I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: was originally after he'd get the other fish, and then uh,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: wanting him to not pull off the spear the whole thing.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: But once I finally got my mitt on him, you
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: were feeling good too. It was really cool to get
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: a big fish that's good raw that doesn't happen to
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: a freshwater person, big fish that I have been ordering
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: the flesh of for the past twenty five years. And no,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: when did I start eating like when did I start
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: having like where with all to go to a sushi restaurant.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: I've been eating the flesh of for twenty years fifteen
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: years and sushi joints and to have that some of
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: a bit in my hand by the gill cover the
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: throat special way where you grab them like up in
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: the paralyzer. Yeah, squeeze, you get them like your hand is.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: You got your thumb and one through the gills on
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: one side, your four fingers through the gills in the
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: air side, and you're holding his his comma, his hamachi comma,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: his throat. And then I was like, I cannot believe
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: I got this fish at that point, which is about
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: twenty minutes after I shot. And he did everything right.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: He took the time, bled it that we did all
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: that later and then after bleeding it, gutted it and
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: then right on ice and it was good. The perfect
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: pathway to your plate. You need tell when you're telefishing story.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: I only got one. Well, well it's one long one
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: because I shot two, only recovered one, cheap, said, But
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: my mentor stuck with me the whole time right there. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: you're like a like a dog in heel him being
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: the owner. Yeah, maybe I don't know what chips are
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: down when you needed them. Yeah, He's like, come over here,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: I got a fish for you right here. I had
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: to kind of follow if I wanted to spend time,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: I mentor I had to kind of follow him around.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: And I go over there, and this is the kind
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: of spear fishing I like, because you just I'm at
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: the surface going and I looked down and I can
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: see there's like a calico bass two sheeps said, and
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: he's like, shoot the sheep said. I'm like, I don't
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: know which one that is with the stripe on it
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: in the big lip. I'm like, oh, I can see
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: him from here. So I swim down shoot him blasted.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: I don't know, alexlo to answer that question. You were
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: getting that deep and uh shot him easily and it
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: just went through like the tops of his shoulders and
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: it didn't stick, you know, like the whole blue out
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: at the top. But I was watching him swim over.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: He immediately like goes in the direction the fish swam
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: and he weaves me over and the fish is going
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: into a crack, and he's like, all right, now you
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: gotta swim down and getting that crack, you'll see him
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: in there. It's dark, but we'll see a silhouette and
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: shoot him again. I'm like, yeah, right, having So I
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: take like another two minutes swim down. As since I
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: get to the crack, I can just kind of get
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: look underneath it. I gotta go and I go out.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: So I never even looked into the crack. Really, Alex
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: went down. Did you see him again? I did? I did,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: but then he squirted out. Yeah. We had We had
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: lobster in there, there were urchins in there. It was
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: a mess inside that hole. We caught a fish sheep
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: said today that had that dart hole on him on
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: the top that a halready healed over. Oh yeah. And
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: then someone and then someone in our party shot a
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: sheep's head that also had two ft leader coming out
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: of his mouth in the hook and his tongue. Did
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: you see that? Yeah, that was calico? I thought, wasn't it? Okay?
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: What was that? Yeah? It was a calico. But I
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: forget who shot the one that had the rusty hook
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: and hunka model coming out of him. No, that wasn't mine.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: You didn't shoot that with the fishing line coming out
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: of it. I must have been your mentor. He likes
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: he likes a fish that are hurt, track sick fish.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: You might not want to eat your yellow too. So
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: we we didn't swim much farther. We swim another minute
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: or two and there was another chief set, So I
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: think I actually went down that one, and I didn't
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: get a shot. The first time I was down, he
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: just kind of squirted behind some kelps. I came up,
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: got got what do you guys call it, rested, recovered, recovered.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I went down again, set up, almost had a shot,
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: didn't get a shot, and I just waited and he
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: just he just swam right back around and turned around
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: and gave me a nice I don't know. He couldn't
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: have been five ft. He wasn't as far as away
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: from the tip as the gun is long, that's for sure.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: It was beautiful because I watched it from the surface
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: and when he went down, in my head, I'm sending
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: him the vibe be patient, because he went down and
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: it looked like he just was gonna go full speed
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: and they might have gonna just be patient, be patient
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: because the fish, they don't like pointing things at him.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: And then he stopped and he was patient, and that
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: two seconds of patient, the fish just put on the brakes,
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: turned sideways, gave him the perfect shot, penned him to
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: the bottom of the ocean. Fish went shot, went through
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: the shoulder, right out the brain stone perfect yanked him
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: out of the bottom, and now I swam up to
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: the top and then yeah, that was your that was your.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: That was it. That was my first kill. Yeah, but
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: he got more than after that day, this one fish man. Yeah,
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: you know, we hit we hit a sweet spot when
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: you guys left us and we decided to peel in
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: and stop at another hole. And uh, I had sheep
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: said like I could have shot from the surface, And
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: then I was almost like, well, this isn't right. I'm
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: supposed to be diving down, you know. So I let
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: them pass, and then I think I actually saw later
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: once I realized, like what the calico is. It's like
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: green with white spots on its back. Once I had
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: figured that out, I was looking back on my memory, going, oh,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: I've seen like those fish and I've not been shooting them,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: you know. I just kept looking for something bigger. The
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: day that we were sea bass hunting, I think I
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: saw one. It was a giant fish. So I kept
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: looking for like, this is true, this big stuff where
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: I should have been shooting the Yeah, that's what saves
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: a lot of calico bass lives. Is my inability to
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: accurately judge them. That is an art because a lot
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: of them I'm like, I don't know, buddy, and let
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: you slide. But no, first I'm clearing my ears. Last
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: two dives I did today, I just felt like it
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: was just constant, just coming out of my ears the
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: whole time as I was going to the bottom. The
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: clear never stopped as I went down, just clearing up,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: clearing up a storm. So I got that feeling good
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: about it. Gotta fish this pretty successful trip. So you
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: feel like you're an aspiring um for sure, I would
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: like to do it some more. Do you feel like
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: you wasted your life? See, that's what I'm struggling with,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: is that I wasted my life. I used to think
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: that being like a mountain hunter. Like I used to
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: think that being a mountain hunter was interesting. I still
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: do not as interesting spear fishing. No, it's a good challenge, man.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: That's that's what's great about it. It really is. Like.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: The thing I like about mountain hunting is that a
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: lot of things about it. One thing I like about
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: mountain hut listen to this, So I got an idea.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: If you if you, if you took your mountain hunting
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: to like some see it's not necessary to do this,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: but let's just say you have to somehow incorporate like
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: climbing big walls, climbing up big walls where you could
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: fall off and die, and then you had to shoot
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: the mountain. Go. That would be a little a little
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: more like this what I liked about mountain hunting. There's
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: there's three things I know about spear fish and being
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: the new one, riding a bike in Manhattan. In mountain
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: hunting are three things where there's just no we're I'm
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: not saying for everybody. It's three things where I just
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: think about what I'm doing. Mm hmm. I'm just thinking
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: about There's enough stuff going on, like topography, weather bears,
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: what you know about animals, right, the burning of time.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: It's like a just I do those things and I
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: just do that and then my mind's not doing anything
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: else and it's very soothing. It's just like I'm just
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: doing that. Yep. I'm not like I'm not engaged in
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: any other bullshit in my head. I'm not like, oh man,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: I should call my mom more often, you know what
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: I mean. I'm just like doing the thing Um, and
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: that's why I like mountain hunting. Riding your bike in
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: Manhattan is just too dangerous, but I enjoy it. But
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: and then now spear fishing, man, but I think that,
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: like I kind of like the food from spear fishing.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: I don't know how dare dare I say? I almost
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: kind of like it better than eating venison than eating
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: stuff you get mountin hunting, because you know what, a
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: lot of that stuff is pretty damn similar. Yeah, you
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: don't really you don't acquire any food biking in Manhattan
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: unless you stop at Joe's Pizza. No, you started getting
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: them water dogs out of the tanks of hot water
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: that the guys with a little trucks are little carts
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: are selling. But no, discard that when I'm just saying,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: that's one where you're just no room to think about
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: other stuff. But uh, I kind of like the food
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: from this from this is pretty spectacular. And you guys,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: that's another they I wanted to ask you before you
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: wrap up here. Um, do you guys find like in
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: hunting there's a lot of people that don't they hunt,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: and you think, like hunting is like a way to
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: like get food historically, right, it's probably kind of got
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: into the whole activity as folks. Um, there's a lot
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: of people like the hunt. They only give a shit
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: about the They only give a shit about the food.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: You know, in your community, there a lot of people
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: who are like big time spear fishermen that don't really
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: take care of their fish and and like eating and
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: give it away or is it most people pretty respectful
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: that say, I'd say they're very Um, Like, if we're
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: going on a big trip with several guys and there's
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: a couple of guys that don't get a fish there,
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: they're like right there, hey, you know, and like wanting fish,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: I mean they want everyone wants fish. Everyone takes care
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: of their fish. So you got do you feel that
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: you guys are typical or atypical in that you're always
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: making all kinds of like preparations with the fish and
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: eating it this way and this one's good to eat
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: that way, I mean, and like this one's for this,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: This is great for tempera, this is great to eat raw,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: this is great to broil, this is great to grill.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: They've all got a lot of your bodies have that
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: kind of way about them. Yeah, definitely, Um, just in
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: how they're cook how they're prepared, eating them fresh as
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: in raw, you know, just a little quick freeze on them,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: or any seasons, like are the spices sauces that we've
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: made today when we're just on the filt table, you know,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: as we're cutting them, you know, you're you're ripping, you're
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: rubbing the ribs with a spoon, and we had sauce
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: right there and just eat it and it was just
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: good fresh. You're good cook man, You're like a good cook,
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: like a good like working man's high level cook. Well,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: I appreciate that, you know what I mean? I hope.
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: So it's like approachable, like simple, just really good stuff.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: It's good. Do we get good? So? Dude, Yeah, I'm
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: a yachtsman, fisherman, fisherman. I think the community as a
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: whole understands that the catches only half m truly, truly.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: I don't think you'd go into any community and run
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: into someone that's actually going after game fish, pelagic fish
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: and already not thinking about how am I going to
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: get this iced? How am I going to get at home?
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: How am I going to get it prepped? What is
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: it for? I think the community as a whole is
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: is solid when it comes to that because you got that.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: That's thing like with spear fisherman, you're targeting um kind
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: of like a lot of the most high qualities sought
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: after fish. I know why you like spear fishing because
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: all I mean, I'm like, well, I like like what
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I talked about the adventure of it, but you missed
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: one one major point. It's just there's a little jar
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: and that goes down. But it's a target rich environment.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: You have a lot of choices, and that when we
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: talked to our new spear fisherman, that's really the biggest
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: thing is you're gonna see a lot you've got to
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: You guys pass up a lot of stuff. We pass
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: up hundreds, if not thousands, to select one or two
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: or three or four that are what we specifically want.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: That's thing I noticed about you guys. I'm kind of like,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: let's shoot them all, you know, let's go, let's go.
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: But you guys are kind of like, just it's letting
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: him go. Yeah, soaking the scenery, enjoy it, and then
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: turn on the hunt when you need to turn it
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: on because something may scoot out into a hole and
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: now it's scenior. He's done. Now it's good time. That's
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: the fish we want. How am I going to get
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: to him without him running? You know? That's target rich environment. Yeah.
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: You didn't think we shot a lot either until you
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: started cleaning fish and that cooler back there. No, there
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: was a handful in there. But no, you guys, you
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: guys let a lot of fish slide. Yeah, that's the
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: best part. My buddy George here says, Yeah, it's like
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: bow hunting, only you've got targets all day long. Yeah,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: like you're saying, otherwise you work all season first shot,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: but I can attend shots today. Yeah, yeah, that's true. Yeah,
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: I like it. Man. I'm gonna start plotting out my
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: next outing. I'm thinking Baja. See that's where I like. Well,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: that's where I mess around. That's where I like. He dabbles,
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: No idea we go down there in family vacation. But
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: when I go on family vacation, I always go somewhere
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: where I can where. Oh, I always go where I
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: could fish. And now we go somewhere where like where
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: I can go. Dabble, dabble. How'd you like the ocean
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: white fish here? Great? Just that was rotten in land
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: though good haven't eaten him yet? Like cleaning them. He's
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: playing nice. Yeah, they like catching them, but it's gonna
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: be your favorite, you think, So that's that good? Look
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: like a nice filt? What? Why are you laughing? That's
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: the best fish out here? You can't compare to yell tailor.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: But I mean those are plattic. We're not talking platt
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: We're talking reef fish, ocean white fish? Are you doing
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: that because George doesn't want people to know about them?
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: It's it's our secret. Actually there's only one guarantee spot too.
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: Um okay, final thoughts. I mean I could go, I can.
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: This could be like a ten part series on spear fishing,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: but one I love really really interesting to me. Man
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: wasted my life? Yeah, I agree. I think looking through binoculars. Yeah,
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: I think looking through a pair of binoculars for an
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: antler that you're trying to pick out in shrub brush
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: is cool. But imagine trying to pick out all these
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: fish when they're cruising through the kelp the same thing,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: only you're a lot closer, with a lot more opportunity.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: I don't have to hike us for really, Yeah, you
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: have to swim at you. Guys don't realize it because
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: you just used to it. It is extremely demanding, extremely demanding,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: long day of spear fishing, you sleep really well. What
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: was your average time between putting your head on your
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: pillow and being gone? Just like in three and three nights.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: It's really demanding. And then other stuff that you don't
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: even think about, like you kind of drifting with the
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: current or whatever, and you look in that boat, it's
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: like a million miles away. You start kicking through the
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: kelt and you look a while later and it's like
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: that scene of Monty Python or the dudes running that
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: the duds running the animal, the bogus farther keeps getting
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: farther away, and you're like, what, so I would get round.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: I'm thinking I'd turn over my back so i couldn't
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: even see the damn boat, and I'd kind of get
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: a bearing and just go, and I'd be like, I'll
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: allow myself to look in ten minutes. A couple of
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: times what he was doing. Yeah, I noticed a couple
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: of times when I drove up and you actually gave
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: me the way some people give me the nice wave,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: like hey, I'm here, cool, I'm gonna head on your way.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: You gave me the like come here, monthfucker right right here,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: right now, because I I octopus said, strip of my
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: snor and mentor was nowhere? All right? You got any
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: final thoughts, Alex, Yeah, I'll finish off our little final
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: thought process here is that you got to experience the
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: first of the first, which is which is the stepping
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: stone to uh and it's a universe of chasing fish
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: that can take you around this entire globe and you'll
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: of the sum of bit just covered in water, and
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: you'll meet some of the best people, and you'll go
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: to some of the most amazing places, and you'll uh
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: pick up some of the best cooking and recipes from
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: different cultures and just the regular guy that's flaying your fish,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: and UH, it's pretty special. So I'm stoked to have
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: you in our spear fishing culture. Thank you, ma'am. That's it.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: Like one of our buddies JP said too, it's not
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: all about the fish. You know, the same thing around
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: a hunt camp brain thing. You get get a group
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: of guys common interest doing something that you can get outdoors,
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: you know, see see nature, see the splendor out there,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: and go get some great table fair. You know, it's awesome.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: It's like a real team component to it too, you know,
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: yea through your problems. You could put you know, five
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: six guys on us, you know about for three days,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: and I mean I don't think we had one that
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: was pretty entertaining the whole. Well, you did break a
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: very important part on my boat. Let's see, I broke
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: about ten things. George hasn't found two of them, and
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: we're not gonna talk about it. I'm pretty sure I'm
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: gonna blame it on Yanni after they leave here. But
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: you recovered you recovered two anchors aluminum anchor which you
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: found store credit. I found it. I recovered, you found it.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: I recovered I spotted it and pondered it and thought
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: about damn, the anchor is down deep. Any concluders, Uh,
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: welcome anytime. I think this is the start of your journey.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: I think you have a good intro into it. Anyone
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: that's looking to get into sport, just remember, do a
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: little homework first. Try to find a mentor, at least
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: do some research on the internet and talk to someone
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: that's done it. There are some risks to it, but
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: at the end of the day, it's a very very
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: amazing sport. Are people in your community going to be
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: annoyed that you're letting that that like by now by
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: taking out like a couple of loud mouths, that you're
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: like ruining the whole thing because now every time Dick
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: and Harry is gonna pick up a spear gun. I
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: think I think the sport itself will weed out a
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: percentage of those people as you saw today. Um, I
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: mean to tell you to the US in the world
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: and when you talk about like New Zealand, Australia, Europe,
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: South Africa, that the US is it's pretty far behind
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: population wise of spear fisher, spear fisher women, but spear
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: fishing in general. Uh, and I will find out, I guess.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: But yeah, no, it's it's a growing community anyway. It's
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: it is a very kind of slowly growing sport, consistently growing.
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: And I know a lot of guys that are like
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: into mountain hunting that are real curious about spear fishing. Yeah,
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: I mean, it's we all kind of like make each
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: other curious about it. But yeah, don't you think, Johnnie,
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: It's like in general, just like a round the guys
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: we hang out with We kind of like talk about
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: spear fishing more now than we might have once upon
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: a time. But that's true, Rob, Jeremy and Sergio. I
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: want you to come to South Africa. Really all you
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: have to do, all you have to do is pack
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: a bag. All the gear there is waiting rifles. That's
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: Rob Rob from Robert Jeremy, Jeremy Williams and Sergio campus
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: is it worth it is? It's good, It's pretty good.
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: But is it better in here? It's it's a better
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: in California's different, different fish. That's the thing about different set,
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: different set of yea, you can drive two hours from
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: here in totally different plug your plug your company again. Uh,
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: well you guys don't talking about Ultimate Spearfishing. Ultimate spear Fishing. Yeah.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: Ultimate spear Fishing is a new project. It was a
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: magazine out of South Africa. We're relaunching it on a website.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: Is the website live? It is live, It's being updated continually.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: But yeah, it's it's got quite a bit information about
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: basic skills and spear fishing. Was originally um, like I said,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: based out of South Africa and South African divers as
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: a whole are are some of the best and most
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: hardcore divers out there. So yeah, there's a lot of
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: good information on there um and you're bringing the digital
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: bringing in a digital there's a lot of the print
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: articles online now. Then we're kind of updating it with
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: new contribution throughout throughout the Ultimate Spearfish, Ultimate spear Fishing
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: dot and then your outfits called one Again freedo shot
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: dot com and yeah, we do both rob Allence spear
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: fishing Gear, Ocean Hunter and myster Carbon Fins. So that
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: and people just from around the country by at mail
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: order too. Yeah we're I mean, we're we're mostly a
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: wholesale company, but yeah, we do. We do have a
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: retail outlet in northern California and that was mostly to
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: address kind of the local spear fishing community. And people
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: can call you up and be like, oh, my thing
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: doesn't work. Thing doesn't work. Yet. We're good at fixing stuff,
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: good at troubleshooting, good kind of basic tips on where
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: to go, and I dove quite a few places in
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: my lifetime so far. So yeah, I know a lot
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: of people kind of throughout the world and throughout the community.
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: If you're traveling somewhere, I can kind of point in
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: the right direction or give you some pointers, all right,
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: Greg Fonts, Greg Fonts, George, don't you know your damn
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: last name? Oh yeah, I just know George, not yours. Right,
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I love it. It's okay. You're welcome back into your time,
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: whether you know my last name or not. All right,
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: Ryan Rain very French. Thank you all right, guys, thank
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: you very much. Thank you. Se
