- 0:00Welcome to Health, Life and What's Next.
- 0:03With Dr.
- 0:03Jennifer Ginty.
- 0:05This is the podcast where we explore what it really means to live well through honest conversations about health, life, business, and everything in between.
- 0:17Because remember, healing is about more than medicine.
- 0:21I'm so glad you are here.
- 0:24Let's get into today's conversation as you can see by the title of this episode, I wanna discuss what changed when I stopped trying to save the business and started building the life I actually wanted.
- 0:38So there was a time when I generally could not imagine saying what I'm about to tell you.
- 0:44Today, my business can pay me.
- 0:48I can take my family on vacations.
- 0:52I can send money back home.
- 0:54I can donate to people and causes I care about.
- 0:58I recently took my team and members of my family to an entire wellness day, which we do every year, and I paid for everyone.
- 1:09Today, I work less than I did when I was desperately trying to make this business work.
- 1:15I am more selective about what I do.
- 1:18My business is simpler.
- 1:20My services are simpler.
- 1:22The way people work with me is clearer and easier, and I am no longer waking up every morning feeling like I need to chase the next thing to make sure everything is going to be okay.
- 1:35The anxiety is way less.
- 1:38Now, as a business owner, there's gonna be stress, okay?
- 1:41I'm not showing up here and say,"Oh my God, all my problems are solved.
- 1:45I have no more anxiety." No.
- 1:47That's not the truth.
- 1:48But I'm telling you, the business owner I am today, the clinic I'm running today is way different than a few years ago But at the same time, I need you to understand something.
- 2:01None of this looked easy when I was living off my savings.
- 2:06And this is exactly what I wanted to end the series here.
- 2:10Because again, part one was the leap.
- 2:13Part two was the part that nobody wanted to talk about, the failures, the mistakes.
- 2:18Part three, this part is what happened because I did not quit.
- 2:24I didn't give up, and I think we need more stories about that.
- 2:29I used to think success was going to come from finding the right thing, the right coach, the right employees, the right program, the right life, the right niche, the right offer.
- 2:40Something I hadn't discovered yet.
- 2:43So I kept looking, right?
- 2:45We kept- I kept looking, I kept adding, I kept investing, I kept changing, and I kept watching what everybody else was doing.
- 2:53I was building from anxiety, and anxiety loves activity because doing something feels safer than sitting still long enough to understand what is actually wrong.
- 3:04Eventually, I got tired of running in circles and I started doing almost the opposite.
- 3:11I simplified.
- 3:12That became one of my biggest turning points in my business.
- 3:16I stopped trying to do everything and be everything.
- 3:20I became much clearer about what we actually do well, what I actually do well.
- 3:25Who do I help?
- 3:27What I want my role to be, what I want people to see me as, what I don't want my role to be, and who I am not attracting.
- 3:34What belongs inside of Wellness Corner and what doesn't?
- 3:37I simplify how somebody can work with me.
- 3:40I realized I didn't, I did not need to keep investing a new business every few months.
- 3:45I needed to get very good at the business I already had, and that sounds so simple.
- 3:51It was not simpler for me to learn, to be honest with you, as you can see in part two.
- 3:57And something strange happened when I embraced simplicity.
- 4:01I chase less.
- 4:02I became more clear.
- 4:05The easier it became to make decisions, the less energy the business took from me because I wasn't waking up every week asking,"What should I become now?
- 4:15What should I sell now?" I have a system.
- 4:17I have a plan.
- 4:19I know what I'm doing every month.
- 4:20It's so simple right now, and I can focus on implementing and talking and teaching.
- 4:27Now, before I go further, I want to take a minute for those of you who originally found me because of my work in functional medicine because this idea of finally getting clear about what deserves your attention is exactly why I'm hosting my upcoming health strategy session.
- 4:45If you've been thinking,"I know something has changed.
- 4:49I know something is off, but I still don't understand what's driving it or what I should actually do next," this health session is for you.
- 5:00I want you there.
- 5:00It's happening on Saturday, October 17th at 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time.
- 5:06I'm hosting it live online.
- 5:08So it is called From I Know Something Is Off to Here's What We Do Next.
- 5:15This is an hour of me not naming symptoms you already know you have.
- 5:21I want to show you what you could be missing, what is the first step you should be exploring.
- 5:26What can be done once you understand more?
- 5:29What you should do with what you already have, and how we decide which direction makes sense instead of trying one random thing after another.
- 5:38If you are actually looking for answers, you want to feel better, you want to address your symptoms, you I'm gonna put the link below click and register.
- 5:47I want you to reserve your seat.
- 5:49Now, let's get back to the story.
- 5:52One of the biggest changes I made had nothing to do with marketing.
- 5:57I stopped running my entire life like the business was always five minutes away from disaster.
- 6:02For years, I could physically leave the office and still be at work I would go home and still think about work.
- 6:10I used to have a cell phone where people can reach me, right?
- 6:14My body will be home.
- 6:16My mind will still be in the clinic, thinking about patients, payroll, schedule, thinking about the next month, thinking about the money I'm making or not making.
- 6:26I had become so accustomed to operating under pressure that pressure started feeling normal, and eventually I had to ask myself, what exactly am I building if I finally succeed and I am too exhausted to enjoy it?
- 6:40Because I didn't leave the ER to create another life where I was never really present.
- 6:46I didn't build a business so the business could own me.
- 6:50So I started changing the way I worked.
- 6:53I got rid of the cell phone.
- 6:54I will not wake up at 4:00 AM like I used to.
- 6:57I will not work overnight, and I did all this intentionally.
- 7:01I started believing that I can make this work.
- 7:04Okay?
- 7:06I began protecting my nervous system instead of constantly feeding it another emergency.
- 7:11I started letting the problem be the problem, without immediately turning it into a catastrophe.
- 7:17That gave me room to think, to have hope, to know this was meant to be.
- 7:23I was chosen for this, and my business can succeed.
- 7:26My business can grow.
- 7:27And the good decisions usually come from that place, not panic.
- 7:31So I also started working less That one is still a work in progress, but I am much more interested now in whether my time is being used well than whether I can brag about how hard I am working.
- 7:46There was a season when I needed to work intensely, and those seasons will come, right?
- 7:51And I don't regret them, and I embrace them when they come.
- 7:54The mistake would have been making that season permanent because if the only way my business can succeed is for me to permanently deplete it that's not success.
- 8:05I'm sorry, that's just a different kind of job.
- 8:08That is burnout.
- 8:09And success started showing up in ways that meant much more to me than a revenue screenshot.
- 8:16Recently, I was able to take my team and some of my family members, as I mentioned, to a whole wellness spa.
- 8:22Now I could create an experience for the people that I love, the people that like supporting me and my goals and my vision by simply because I wanted to.
- 8:32That meant something, not because of the m- amount of money I'm making now, because it's what I want.
- 8:38I want to give back without feeling guilty, without worrying about the bills.
- 8:44The business wasn't only taking anymore, it was giving because of what it represented.
- 8:49I can take my family on vacations, okay?
- 8:53And when I say that, I don't just mean financially.
- 8:56Of course, that's important.
- 8:58There was a time when I could technically afford to live, but I mentally I couldn't.
- 9:03I would have taken the clinic with me in my head everywhere I go.
- 9:07Now I'm learning how to actually go.
- 9:09I would just go away and just the clinic will still be running, people are being taken care of, when I come back, my business is running.
- 9:16I go away to create memories, experiences, be a mother, be a wife, be me, and that's success to me.
- 9:23I can help family, I can give, and I donate a lot.
- 9:27I don't talk about it, but I'm always giving.
- 9:30And giving feels very different when you remember what it felt like to be scared about your own money.
- 9:36That part of success is deeply personal to me.
- 9:38Money gives you choices, and one of the choices I value most is the ability to say,"I can help you." It's ability to retire my mom.
- 9:47That's bigger to me than being able to say,"Look, I made it." And I'm telling you all this because I don't want part two to be the place somebody stops listening.
- 9:57Part two is where people quit, not just in business, in life, in health, in relationship, in something they've been working towards for a long time.
- 10:07Because the middle is ugly.
- 10:10The beginning has excitement.
- 10:12The ending has proof.
- 10:14The middle has very little applause.
- 10:16The middle is where you're doing the work and still don't know whether it is going to pay off or not, and that's the dangerous part.
- 10:25There were many moments when I could say,"I'm done.
- 10:29There were days when that option looked very attractive, but something kept me in the game, and it wasn't blind optimism.
- 10:38It wasn't never giving up on your dreams.
- 10:41Sometimes you absolutely should stop doing something that isn't working.
- 10:45But what kept me was that underneath all of the mess, I still believe in why I had started.
- 10:52I still wanted to practice medicine my way.
- 10:56I wanted to know my patients.
- 10:58I wanted to have more control over my time.
- 11:00I wanted to build my own schedule.
- 11:03I wanted to work hard one season and just rest another.
- 11:07I wanted to build something that reflect how I believe people should be cared for.
- 11:12The strategy changed many times.
- 11:14The reason didn't, and that's important.
- 11:18Sometimes we quit because the strategy failed.
- 11:22When the goal itself is still right.
- 11:24Those are different things.
- 11:26A marketing strategy can fail, a hire can fail, an offer can fail, a treatment approach can need to change.
- 11:33A plan can need to change.
- 11:35That does not automatically mean the destination was wrong.
- 11:39And I had to learn to stop confusing this isn't working with nothing will ever work.
- 11:46I had to learn And I see people do this with their health too.
- 11:50They try something, it doesn't help the way they hope.
- 11:53Another treatment, another diet, another doctor, another supplements, another attempt.
- 11:57Eventually, nothing works for me.
- 12:00And I understand the frustration.
- 12:02Trust me, I do.
- 12:04But sometimes the failure of one approach is not evidence that you are beyond help.
- 12:10Sometimes it means that wasn't the right approach.
- 12:14You didn't have the whole picture yet.
- 12:16Something important hadn't been considered.
- 12:19The timing wasn't right.
- 12:20The plan needed to change.
- 12:22The next question needed to be better.
- 12:25There's a difference between this didn't work and I will never feel better.
- 12:31And I see my patients say this all of the time,"I'll never feel better." And I don't want you to confuse the two because hopelessness makes decisions for you, and sometimes it makes you stop just before you finally start asking the right questions.
- 12:47That's exactly what business taught me.
- 12:50At one point, I thought I needed more service strategy coach.
- 12:53I did marketing.
- 12:54No, I needed more.
- 12:56What I actually needed was clarity.
- 12:58And once I had clarity, once I just slow down, create time to think, evaluate the things that I'm doing, question everything that I'm doing, okay, remove things.
- 13:09That is one of the strangest things about growth.
- 13:12You think growth means adding?
- 13:14No.
- 13:15Growth means the courage to subtract, remove.
- 13:20Okay?
- 13:21I also stopped needing every patient to be for me.
- 13:26That brought a level of peace to the business that I didn't even know existed.
- 13:30Because you are not constantly trying to convince everybody, sometimes the better question is,"Who are we actually equipped to help well?" That changed my marketing, my services, the patient experience, and my own energy.
- 13:45I became more comfortable saying no.
- 13:49No to things that made money, but created a business I didn't want.
- 13:53No to ideas that sounded exciting, but added unnecessary complexity.
- 13:57No to people weren't the right fit.
- 13:59Now, am I still ambitious?
- 14:01Do not misunderstand me.
- 14:03I still have goals, I still want to grow, I still look at the business and see things I want to improve every day, every week, but ambition feels different now.
- 14:13It is not,"I need to prove this work." Ambition is,"I already know this work.
- 14:18What do I want to build from here?" Those are completely different energies.
- 14:24One is survival, and the other one is a choice.
- 14:28And maybe that's what I wanted most of all along, choice.
- 14:33The choice to work less, the choice to spend more time with my family, the choice to be present for my children, the choice to go on vacation, the choice to give, the choice to spend a day with my team and family members and celebrating instead of putting out fires, the choice to make a business decision because it is right, not because I am terrified.
- 14:54And to me, that's wealth.
- 14:56So when I look back now, I am incredibly grateful that I didn't quit during the seasons when the business looked nothing like what I, I had imagined.
- 15:08Because if I had judged the entire story by its worst chapter, I would've missed this one thing.
- 15:16That's something I want you to remember.
- 15:18Do not use one difficult chapter to predict the ending of a story that is still being written.
- 15:25That doesn't mean you need to stay forever in something that is destructive.
- 15:28It does not mean to keep throwing money at something that clearly isn't working.
- 15:33It means get honest before you give up Is the dream wrong or does the strategy need to change?
- 15:41Are you failing or are you learning something you didn't know yet?
- 15:45Do you need to quit or do you need to simplify?
- 15:49Do you need another solution, or do you finally need to stop long enough to understand the problem?
- 15:55Those questions saved me a lot of stress and a lot more than another business program ever did.
- 16:02If I could sit across from the old Dr.
- 16:04Jencie, who was in pain herself, the woman living off savings, the woman looking at everything she had invested and wondering whether she had made a terrible mistake, I don't think I would tell her,"Don't worry, you're going to make a lot of money." I would not tell her that.
- 16:23I'd probably say,"Okay, you're going to figure it out.
- 16:26You're going to figure out what matters.
- 16:28You're going to stop trying to build everybody else's version of success.
- 16:32You're going to stop chasing every answer.
- 16:36You're going to simplify.
- 16:38You are going to take your family places.
- 16:39You are going to give back.
- 16:40You are going to look around one day and realize this thing that once terrified me now supports a life I'm grateful to have." And maybe most importantly, you are going to enjoy it because good is building the life you pray for if you never learn how to live inside it?
- 16:59This is where I am now.
- 17:00Not sitting here pretending business is easy and I made it to the top, okay?
- 17:05But no longer chasing.
- 17:07I built something simpler, healthier, profitable, more aligned with the doctor I want to be, the life I want to have.
- 17:16And after everything it took to get here, that feels like success.
- 17:20Now, part one was I got fed up and jumped.
- 17:24Part two was I nearly lost myself trying to make it work.
- 17:28And now part three is I stayed long enough to learn how to make it mine, and I think that's the part of success we don't talk about enough.
- 17:38Sometimes winning isn't becoming bigger.
- 17:41Sometimes winning is finally becoming clear.
- 17:44I hope you enjoyed this three-part series.
