- 0:22SPEAKER_00: This past week I've been sharing excerpts from a book that I published a few years ago.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: It's called The Artist Suitcase 26 Essentials for the Creative Journey.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: It's a short, fun read for all kinds of artists, particularly for writers.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Here's today's excerpt from the chapter H is for Humility.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Hope you enjoy it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: In July 2011, Adam Beville experienced something he'll never forget.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: He had traveled from his home in Arizona to see U2 in Nashville during their 360 tour.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Many U2 fans travel a long way to see the band, but Bevel is no ordinary fan.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: He is a blind guitarist, and he had come to Nashville in hopes of getting on stage to play with his hero Bono.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Bevel came prepared with a sign that read, Blind Guitar Player, bring me up.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: He held it up all through the concert as he stood in the crowded pit near the stage.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: The last song U2 played on the 360 tour was Moment of Surrender.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: As they finished the song and began to walk off stage, Bono noticed the sign and asked Bevel what he wanted to play.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: He responded, All I want is you, he and his wife's favorite U2 song, and Bono had him escorted on stage.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: A stage hand gave him Bono's guitar, and Bevel began strumming.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Bono started to sing and the rest of the band joined in for the spontaneous performance.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: When the song was done, Bono hugged Bevel and even gave him his guitar.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: At the end of a long and exhausting music set, in front of forty five thousand adoring fans, one of the world's most famous musicians shared the spotlight with a blind guitar player.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Whether you have forty five thousand fans or just four or five, it's a challenge to share the spotlight and shift the focus to others.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Here are three truths to help keep you grounded.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Number one, your talent is on loan from God.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: You are a steward of the talent God has given you.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: It's not really yours in the first place.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: You can't claim any credit for the good things that happen as a result of your talent.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: All the glory goes to God.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Number two, your true friends love you for who you are, not what you do.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Those who matter most in your life don't love you because of your talent or gifts.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: They love you unconditionally as a friend or family member.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: three, your self-worth shouldn't come from your success.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: It's easy to be so emotionally tied to your art that you feel like a winner when things are going well and a failure when things aren't.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Don't base your self worth on temporary success or failure.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Saint Augustine pointed out the true path to greatness when he said, Do you wish to rise?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Begin by descending.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: You plant a tower that will pierce the clouds, lay first the foundation of humility.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: These three truths will help you keep your creative gifts in proper perspective so you can focus on serving others and make a positive impact.
