- 0:01Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host Andrew McGivern for July 17th.
- 0:13Now let's talk about today's holiday Yellow Pig Day.
- 0:18Yes, Yellow Pig Day. It's not a tribute to a new
- 0:23cartoon character or a trendy smoothie flavor or even pork
- 0:27chops or anything like that. This delightfully odd holiday is
- 0:32celebrated by math enthusiasts. Yes, there are math enthusiasts,
- 0:37especially those who have an irrational affection for the
- 0:41number 17. Today, of course, is July 17th.
- 0:47The origins trace back to the 1960s, when 2 Princeton math
- 0:50students, Michael Spivak and David Kelly, created a concept
- 0:55of the yellow pig, a fictional, oddly specific mascot, as part
- 1:01of their obsession with the number 17.
- 1:04Over time, it evolved into a quirky mathematical celebration
- 1:08marked by lectures, songs, and, yes, even yellow pig
- 1:12memorabilia. Now I know what you're thinking.
- 1:16What does a yellow pig have to do with the price of my morning
- 1:20coffee? Well, maybe nothing, unless you
- 1:26paid $0.17 for your coffee. But that doesn't mean we can't
- 1:32celebrate a bit of absurdity or dig into the perfection of
- 1:36patterns and prime numbers. So with that in mind, here's
- 1:40your quote for today from Albert Einstein, who once said pure
- 1:47mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.
- 1:54Let's take a moment to appreciate that math often gets
- 1:58a bad rap, a reputation for being cold, rigid, maybe even
- 2:03boring. But Einstein, in all his brainy
- 2:06brilliance, saw it a little differently.
- 2:09He saw math as something almost lyrical, but made from the
- 2:15language of logic. And honestly, that's what Yellow
- 2:18Pig Day reminds us of today. There's beauty, even whimsy, in
- 2:24the structure of the universe. 17 isn't just a number, it's a
- 2:29prime number, a number with a personality, and a number so
- 2:34special that it has its own oddly colored pig.
- 2:38But what is so special about the number 17 anyway?
- 2:43Well, like I said, it's a prime number, but it's also the sum of
- 2:47the first four prime numbers. And don't forget Fermat's
- 2:52Polygon puzzle, because 17 is the largest number of sides a
- 2:58regular Polygon can have and still be constructed using only
- 3:02a compass and a straight edge. Apparently this is a big deal in
- 3:07geometry, and it also shows up in random places.
- 3:13In music. The Hecta Decagon has inspired
- 3:17tuning systems. In linguistics, some languages
- 3:20use a base 17 counting system. In physics and computer science,
- 3:2517 frequently pops up in formulas and code and no one
- 3:31knows why. And it's culturally odd too.
- 3:35In Italy, 17 is unlucky. The Roman numeral XDII, or 17
- 3:43can be rearranged to spell DIXI, which means I have lived, which
- 3:50is a euphemism for death. And This is why Yellow Pig Day
- 3:56came about. South today.
- 3:58Whether you're tackling a tough equation or just calculating the
- 4:03tip at lunch, remember, math isn't just numbers on a page.
- 4:10It's a hidden rhythm of reality. And sometimes it shows up
- 4:14wearing bright yellow and a curly tail.
- 4:17That's going to do it For today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:20for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:24Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
