- 0:58and especially want to thank christ for her support. Now it's time for today's
- 1:03episode of Nick Carter Corpse in the Cab. What's the matter? What is
- 1:21it? Another case for Nick Carter, Master Detective. Yes, it's another
- 1:33case for that most famous of all manhunters, the detective whose ability at solving
- 1:38crime is unequal in the case of detective fiction, Nick Carter, Master Detective.
- 1:42The night's curious adventure the Corpse in the Cab are Nick Carter and the
- 1:49mystery of the murder in the park. That's here, mister Ramsey, you
- 2:00are very kind, indeed to take it an interest in this problem. Wa,
- 2:05dear fellow, I consider it my civic duty. A taxi here's a
- 2:10cab now, Yes, okay, jents, make it snappy. We're blocking
- 2:15traffic, all right, you get in first, my party? You know
- 2:19my party? Thank you? What chance? I guess the quickest way to
- 2:23get there is through the park. Yes, drive through the park. I'll
- 2:27tell you where to turn. Okay, I believe it is on West fifty
- 2:34fourth Street and there's a plague out here. Excuse me driving? Yeah?
- 2:38Now, do you mind if I shut this class petition between a skull?
- 2:43Right ahead? Boss? Your pay of pay here, let me do it
- 2:46for you. Yeah, well that's better. Nice winter evening stars twinkling?
- 2:58How to pick us up for the grim busines? Us ahead? A lucky
- 3:01thing? I ran into you, lucky thing. Yes, indeed, mister
- 3:07Ramsey, it seems faint destined me to make your acquaintance this afternoon. Yes,
- 3:12lucky thing, just my little way of keeping air out of the windpipe.
- 3:29There you are, my dear fellow. He mighty lucky thing. I
- 3:34ran into you tonight. You gotta help me, Nick, you got it.
- 3:49They'll slap me and stir. Now take it easy, surety, take
- 3:52it easy, and tell me again exactly what happened. Like I said,
- 3:55two guys, hail my cap one of them, says to drive through the
- 3:59park. He'll tell me where it turned out. And when you get out
- 4:01of the park, the one guy opens the petition again and says to pull
- 4:04up. He's getting out. He tells me to drive the other guy to
- 4:08the precinct police station. And Nick, if I hadn't looked around when I
- 4:12came to the intersection and seen what I seen, I'd have driven right up
- 4:15to the pullhouse with a dead body in my cab. Me, Shorty Bentano,
- 4:20you don't remember what the man looked like, Shorty in the dark,
- 4:24I ain't got cats eyes, Nick, gee which you are jumping? And
- 4:29just Patsy buzzing me in the talk back? Oh, Nick, in the
- 4:32immitible words, mister windshow, my stomach and my backbone are now a twosuit.
- 4:38You have to are your office, sandwich, Patsy. We've got work
- 4:41to do. Work. Can I and Patsy get me a police headquarters?
- 4:44Lieutenant Riley, you're going to turn me in, Nick, I thought you'd
- 4:48help me. I am going to help you, Shorty. But the sooner
- 4:50the police know about the murdered man outside in your cab, the better it
- 4:54is for you. You're crazy, Nick, I done time. I ain't
- 4:57got a chance. If the cops find out that stiffing my buggy, it's
- 5:00curtains for me. I'm getting naughty. Sure I sit down there, Nick,
- 5:04give me the hot seat for something I never done. No, they
- 5:08won't, shorty, not well, my name's Nick Carter. Right back,
- 5:25stand back, just a little lax, that's all. Get back on our
- 5:29sidewalk, buddy. Nobody gets through here. It beats hard, Nick.
- 5:33Not one bit of identification on this, buddy. No bullet trays, no
- 5:39knife, no nothing. Why don't you want the murder to do? Raley?
- 5:42Leave his calling card. I'm always getting stuck with one of these dud
- 5:46cases. It takes monsters havel them. We don't even know who this tiff
- 5:50is. Flash a light inside here again? Sure, sure you see something
- 5:56I'm just looking you see these pockets are turned inside out? The motive was
- 6:00robbery, all right? No, Raley, I don't think so. It
- 6:04doesn't look prosperous enough to rob Nick. You're always looking for what's not there
- 6:10that might mean something. True Now, Raleigh, evidently the murderer I didn't
- 6:13care to have his victim's identity uncovered too soon. Say what are you looking
- 6:17at his hands for Nick? Rally, have your laboratory analyze this white powder
- 6:24under the nail of his right index finger. Say that there is something under
- 6:28his fingernail. Yes, I have an idea you'll find it's chalk chalk.
- 6:31But sure you're a smart one, Nick, with these lily white hands.
- 6:38Hey, this guy was a pool player professional. Maybe maybe I don't bank
- 6:43on it. Now, Raley, about Shorty, I'm holding him, Nick,
- 6:47never fear about that, now, look, Rally, he's a favorite.
- 6:49I mean he don't pull him in here? Oh great jump and Vanshee's
- 6:53Nick, I've got to Usn't Rally had nothing to do with his murder?
- 6:56If he were a party to it, he had dump the body out somewhere,
- 6:58wouldn't he where? Certainly what Seordy's been on the right side of the
- 7:00fence ever since I got out of the big house, and he's given me
- 7:03a hand on cases from time to time. I know you owe him a
- 7:08hero, and I owe you a barrel of him. Much about it?
- 7:11Well, lokay, I'll shut my eyes for twenty four hours. No longer,
- 7:15though, mind you? Thanks rolling, Nick, Well, where are
- 7:18you going to find a murderer. Oy, this is some buggy you got
- 7:32here? Nick, four speeds ahead a sirene two search lights. Anytime you
- 7:40need a show for a regular, I'll hire ron. Like driving my car,
- 7:43it's like handling a baby carriage. Oh, we're turning into fifty fourth
- 7:47Street now, Nick, all right, shorty, slow down a little now.
- 7:54What was it you heard your passenger say? One says the quickest way
- 7:57to get there is through the park. I'll tell you where to turn off.
- 8:01And any other guy says, it's on West fifty fourth Street, and
- 8:03there's a flag out, and any other guy shuts the partition, and I
- 8:09don't hear no more. On fifty fourth Street doesn't run very far here on
- 8:11this side. I don't see nothing on this block. Plays plays usually in
- 8:16public buildings, aren't there? You think maybe this is going to be a
- 8:20clue, Nick, surely everything's a clue when you don't have much to go
- 8:22on. Nick. Look, flagpole, hell, very handsome flagpole. Yeah,
- 8:28but it's a police station, a police vision. Good, what's good
- 8:33about it? Let's get out of here. You're safe until tomorrow night.
- 8:35Y Riley keeps his word. You want they should keep going slow? Nope,
- 8:43I got the first linking out, Shaine, you can put the speed
- 8:45on again. Where to now to pick up Patsy? I sent her to
- 8:48the Bureau of Missing Person's on thirtieth Street, Ah, Nick, another cop
- 8:52house. I don't like them places. George Day twenty three, forty five,
- 9:07Elmhurst Drive, occupation truck driver the last scene was wearing gray coverall.
- 9:13No, he's not the one, Jane Nick. The guy ain't been missing
- 9:16long enough for anybody to get excited about it. He's only been dead a
- 9:20few hours. I'm playing a hunt shorty. Ah, you want me to
- 9:24read the rest of the names in the listenck, Wait a minute, Petsy,
- 9:26do you have a school teacher on the list? Yes? How did
- 9:30you know? Never mind? What did it look like? Well, let
- 9:31me see and yeah. Ivan Johnson number two, Saint Anne's Drive, occupation
- 9:37professor of ancient history. Good. The lastine was wearing dark blue overcoat,
- 9:43gray hat, white shirt, blue tie, and always wears wears Pince Nez
- 9:46glasses. Yes, so did our corpse. The glasses were missing at the
- 9:50time, but the bridge of his nose bore prints of them. Boy,
- 9:54I'm glad I'm going straight even at dead wake up and talk when Nick Carter
- 9:58gets you on the Nick, how in the world did you know it would
- 10:01be a school teacher? Well, I didn't for sure, but nose glasses
- 10:05plus chalk under the nail of the index finger, plus a sensitive face,
- 10:09and the general appearance had it up to teacher for me. When I looked
- 10:11at the corpse next, I figured if he were a school teacher, he'd
- 10:13be expected home by five o'clock. His wife or family would be on Julie
- 10:18worried if he hadn't showed up by eight or so, and would call the
- 10:20missing Person's Bureau. But who want to murder a poor school teacher? One
- 10:24step at a time, busy, and we know this much already. Our
- 10:28mister Johnson intended going to the fifty fourth Street police station when he and his
- 10:31murderer Hails shot his cab. Oh, I see, Nick, Then you
- 10:33think that Professor Johnson was killed because of something he intended to tell the authority?
- 10:37Mmmm? Simple the way he calls it, ain't it? One?
- 10:41Two? Three? Yes, you're very clever, mister Carter. But don't
- 10:46you think maybe his wife could tell us what it was he was going to
- 10:48tell the copse? Perhaps he told her first. Yes, Patsy, that
- 10:52says what I do think. Uh? What was his address? Just a
- 10:54minute? I mean as here? It is number two Saint Anne's Drive.
- 10:58Right, okay, shorty, take us to number two Saint Anne's Drive and
- 11:03hurry, missus Johnson. I'm Nick Carter and this is my assistant, Patsy
- 11:16Bow. How do you do? How do you do? Missus Johnson?
- 11:18Did the police send to mister Carter? Did they find him? Did they
- 11:20find my husband? I'm only here to ask you a few questions concerning your
- 11:24husband. Oh, then they haven't found him. I really can't say.
- 11:31Now. Tell me did your husband mention whom he was going to see after
- 11:35school hours today? I haven't always comes right home after his classes. I
- 11:39thought that he might have had some special appointment today. Oh no, no,
- 11:43missus Johnson. How is your husband feeling when he left the school this
- 11:48morning? Oh? He was in such a mood this morning, talked about
- 11:52ride and justice until my head. Fairly world. You know, he doesn't
- 11:56like to see people cheated. Mister Carter, Ivan's a very honest person.
- 12:01What do you mean cheated, Missus Johnson? He said he wasn't going to
- 12:03stand by and see the students in his school tricked out of their dimes and
- 12:07quarters. He was going to see right and justice done. What school is
- 12:13this? Central High School? Ivan is the ancient history professor. He's taught
- 12:18there for twelve years. And where's his office there? Why he's at the
- 12:22same office all that time, Number twelve on the first floor. I've always
- 12:28been happy about that. It's such a sunny little room. Well, missus
- 12:31Johnson, you've been very helpful. Do you think they're fine in tonight?
- 12:37Do you think something terriblests happened? The police will keep you informed. Good
- 12:43night, Good night, missus Johnson. Try to get some sleep, thank
- 12:48you. But I couldn't not till Ivan's home. Same But Nick, I
- 13:05thought you were going to the school with Professor Johnson Todd. That's not over
- 13:09here in the West Side Business district. Glad to see on your toes Patsy
- 13:11working in all four cylinders, nose to the grindstone shoulder of the wheel roll
- 13:16that. I'm proud of you. All right, oh right, but what
- 13:18are we doing over here? And that's the moment you'll see for yourself.
- 13:22This is the place, Nick, right chunn oh wait, come on,
- 13:26Passy want me to go with you, Nick, No, you stay here
- 13:31and keep your eyes open, okay, and good luck. Come on,
- 13:33pssy. We still got a lot to do if we want to keep Shorting
- 13:37out of Lieutenant Riley's fowl clutches. I'm glad they didn't lock the front door
- 13:41on this office building, tonet Hey, it's funny there's no night watchmen here
- 13:50usually well, Patsy never look a gift horse and the teeth. No watchman,
- 13:54no trouble. It's spooky in here. There's one little in this whole
- 14:00foy which we brought Shorty in with us. He'll do us more good keeping.
- 14:03Watch outside. Do you really think this is where Ivan Johnson was this
- 14:07afternoon? We know Shorty picked him up in front of this building. And
- 14:11this is the only office building in this block. All the rest of warehouses
- 14:15it's pretty deserted if you ask me, m H. And the elevators of
- 14:18course have stopped for the knife. And this is a ten story building.
- 14:22Well, Nick, maybe if we look at the directory board we'll be able
- 14:26to figure out what office Professor Johnson might have visited. That's what I'm hoping.
- 14:31Let's see, h A doesn't seemed to be a name on this directory
- 14:39that helped us out at all. There isn't isn't, Oh, Nick,
- 14:43what'll we do? Doesn't take much brain work to figure that one. Maybe
- 14:46we can tell if we have a look at the doors of the offices in
- 14:48this building. So we just have to go from office to office. Come
- 14:52on, let's stop climbing. There's nobody on this floor. All doctors,
- 15:03and don't think Johnson's business was with any of them today. Come on up
- 15:09we go. Is there anything on this floor? Nick, No, nobody
- 15:18or nothing to enter with the school teacher, Nick, I just don't think
- 15:28I can make another floor. You've got to, Betsy, we must cover
- 15:31every floor. Well, this is the top. Yeah, and we don't
- 15:45know any more than we did before. Nick, This place is as empty
- 15:48as the number two ration book. What is it? But I heard something,
- 15:56Nick, someone in that office. Yeah, and yet the lights are
- 16:00ound. The name of the doer, says Gerald Ramsey, Promotion council.
- 16:07Let's pay him a visit. Stay behind me now to the left of my
- 16:11flash, right, and who is flashing that pretty light in my office at
- 16:18this time of night? Mister Ramsey, that's my name and yours, Nick
- 16:22Carter. Surely you don't mean that. You're Nick Carter, the great Detective.
- 16:29Sorry to value, mister Ramsey, and my assistant and I were just
- 16:30having a look around this building. Oh well, too bad, diffuse is
- 16:34blown out of my office here, or you could have a good look.
- 16:38Who are you happy? You don't happen to know of any business in this
- 16:42building that might have dealings with a school teacher? Do you a school teacher?
- 16:48Let me see a school teacher? I know, no, it is
- 16:53I never heard of it. But then it's such a lot. I never
- 16:56heard of you. Over that whole stack of packages. Oh I'm so sorry,
- 17:02mister Ramsey. I dropped my handkerchief and I was leaning over to pick
- 17:04it up. Anything breakable in them? Oh no, no, no,
- 17:07it's quite all right. Oh thank goodness for that. Yes, just some
- 17:11things a friend of mine left here until he came back. Just leave him
- 17:15there, I'll take care. No, let me pick them up. No
- 17:17no, no, no, never mind, he just leave them there.
- 17:21They won't mind staying where they are for a while. I'm sure. Well
- 17:25all right, if you say so, yes, I do, so you
- 17:27can just run along and continue your search for whatever it was you were looking
- 17:30for good evening, good evening. I'll pat see if you're okay. We
- 17:36better be on our way. Sorry we disturbed your reverie, mister Ramsey reverie.
- 17:44It's good. Really was an odd specimen. I think he knows anything.
- 17:52If he does, he isn't talking. Come on, Oh gosh,
- 17:56Nicoll like climbing up and downstairs just for nothing. I'm worn out. Maybe
- 18:00it wasn't all for nothing. Patsy, you mean you found a clue somewhere
- 18:03here. I don't mean anything yet, but Nick, I hope you could
- 18:06still walk well enough to get down the ten flights of stairs ahead of us.
- 18:08Patsy, I don't feel quite like carrying you just now. I guess
- 18:12I can make it under my own power. Where to now? Central High
- 18:17School times are wasting and we still haven't uncovered a clue to the murder of
- 18:21the man and short his cab. Gosh, Nick, what do you expect
- 18:37to find in the schoolhouse at this time of night clues to Johnson's murderer?
- 18:41I hope it's no use, Nick, Janet is not here. I have
- 18:51one more dry that racket should wake up the ghost of him. No answer,
- 19:03so Nick Carter's trusty picklock will do the trick. M Oh, it's
- 19:18black as pitch in there. Stay right beside me. It seems to me
- 19:22I heard that one before tonight. And look, Nick, I bought my
- 19:26machines in the dark and that that character's office. And so if you don't
- 19:30mind this time, I'd like to see where I'm going. Okay, Betsy,
- 19:33I'll use my flash and keep it down low shin height. Well that's
- 19:37better. Now, come on, better hurry he or our friend Shorty's going
- 19:41to be sitting in the clink with a murder wrapping on him. Okay,
- 19:45And she said his officers on the first floor, didn't he Yes, number
- 19:48twelve, all bright and sunny here we are, Nick, number twelve.
- 19:56I wish it were bright and sunny in here. Now this time, we'll
- 19:59just spencer the formalities of announcing ourselves. The door's open, Nick, Yes,
- 20:07so it is. One snap on the light. Patsy switches right behind
- 20:11you. Okay, Hey, looks like somebody else has given mister Johnson's room
- 20:18of going over. I'm afraid we got here too late. Paper's all over
- 20:22the floor, window wide open. What do you suppose they were looking?
- 20:25For same thing. We are Betsy Clothes, except for a different reason.
- 20:29You think it was the murderer. Could be what are you reading? Nick?
- 20:36This poster in the wall here a dollar buys a destroyer. High school
- 20:40students subscribe just one dollar to the high School Victory Leap and help buy a
- 20:45destroyer. That's a second time tonight I've seen something like that. Oh where's
- 20:56my Handky, need any help? No, I've got one right here in
- 20:59my pocket. Hey, wait a minute, where'd you get this? What
- 21:06the sticker that came out of your pocket with a handkerchief? I don't know,
- 21:08Nick? Why? Why? It's got the same legend stamped on it
- 21:11that That poster has Victory League, so it has. Did you buy this
- 21:15sticker? No? I buy my destroyers by buying war bond. Well think,
- 21:18Patsy, what did you get it was in your pocket with your handkerchief.
- 21:22Well, I don't know, Nick, I never put anything in this
- 21:23little pocket except my handkerchief. I can swear this stick away. See anybody?
- 21:33Oh, oh, nobody here? Now you okay, Patsy, I
- 21:38guess so what happened? I just happened to look up in time to see
- 21:42a man poking a gun through the open window. So that's why you pushed
- 21:45me out of the way so fast. Yes, there was no time to
- 21:48be plagued. Thanks Nick. Did you recognize the man at the window?
- 21:52No? Too bad, he got away, g Nick, you certainly shot
- 21:56that light out fast. Well, if he can't see us, he can't
- 21:57shoot us a very large mister Carter. Hey, Patsy, give me that
- 22:02sticky you picked up tonight. Do you think it means something to this kill
- 22:04you? Bet? I do. I've just remember where I've seen one like
- 22:07it. Never mind, now, well, Patsy, this case is beginning
- 22:11to add up. I'm not mistaken. The sticker splits it wide open.
- 22:14Come on, I've got a job for you to do on your own,
- 22:15and right now. That means you've got a job that you're going to do
- 22:18on your own right now. This is the plan, and if it works,
- 22:22we'll nail our murderer red handed. What you in here, my dear
- 22:37fella, you know I'm in here. Did you get the fuse fixed?
- 22:41Yeah? While I was fixing it, I got something else too. Come
- 22:44on in you snap on the light and see what I picked up. Snooping
- 22:48around down the basement of this building, see Nick Carter. Well where mister
- 22:56Cattery back again, still looking for the same thing. No, I found
- 23:00what I was looking for. Oh, good, good, it's very fine.
- 23:06I already lifted his rod buss. What do I do with him?
- 23:07Now? You've had your chance, my dear fellow, Now it's mine.
- 23:12You know I have a general impression you men don't like me very well.
- 23:17Dog sure, mister Carter, we love you, but we'll love you a
- 23:21lot better when you don't talk no more but very bruntly, mister carry But
- 23:25that is the idea. Now, mister Ramsey, just what do you think
- 23:27I could say that would harm you? Don't let him fo your boss.
- 23:32When I was hiding in the bushes outside the window back there at the schoolhouse,
- 23:34I heard him tell that in the case was wide open. That up
- 23:37lefty. Oh so as you who took those shots at us through the window.
- 23:41Yeah, and you ain't gonna do nothing about it. It was pretty
- 23:45smart though, figuring out it was mister Ramsey what rubbed out the school teacher.
- 23:48You already complete idiots. Stop that full tongue of you. Yeah,
- 23:52what's a deep boss, He ain't gonna lift it? Tell it true.
- 23:56That's true. Yeah, since you know so much, or we have only
- 24:00one recourse, mister Carty, give me the gun left here. This one's
- 24:06on me. That's a matter, Ramsey, as long as I'm not going
- 24:10to live to tell it, maybe you'll confirm a deduction I made. Shade
- 24:14made. A condemned man is always grand. At one last request, speaker,
- 24:18This high school Victory League's at Florna, isn't it. You're playing on
- 24:22the patriotism of school kids to get them to donate them money to build destroyers
- 24:25and planes, but the money never gets any further than your own pocket,
- 24:27isn't that it? Oh? Yes, mister Curdy, since you put it
- 24:30bluntly that way, I am forced to admit that you're entirely correct. But
- 24:34may I ask what it was that led you to believe that I was behind
- 24:37the league. Yes, when I was at Professor Johnson's office, I saw
- 24:41a poster ru on the wall advertising your dirty leap. Please, mister Cay,
- 24:45I mean just that, swindling high school students out of the few dollars
- 24:49in the name of a patriotism that you never do the meaning of us about
- 24:52the lowest form of stealing that I know, just let me take a pocket.
- 24:56We could afford to be good natured. Mister Carter hasn't much time,
- 25:00you know. You go on, mister curty, As I said, I
- 25:03saw the poster on the wall advertising your dirty racket. And then Patsy found
- 25:07one of your stickers in her handkerchief, where she'd pick it up off your
- 25:10floor. I recalled. Then, seeing that each of the packages he knocked
- 25:14over in here had a sample sticker pasted on it. It was easy enough
- 25:17then to put two and two together and get the required four. It's too
- 25:19bad that your undoubted excellence in mathematics can't save you. And oh, because
- 25:25one little school teacher suspected his kids were being cheated, Poor professor Johnson.
- 25:30It is too bad for him that I found him wandering around his building looking
- 25:33for the offices of the High School Victory League. He told me he suspected
- 25:37it with a phony outfit, and he was going to see right and justice
- 25:41done. I offered to take him right to the police station, and I
- 25:47did, although I wasn't with him when he got there. Very funny,
- 25:52very young boss. We got wait to go. Yes, well, mister
- 25:57catty, this is it. Blast and Banshee's, Nick, don't do this
- 26:11to me again. I tell you, my nerves won't stand it. Oh
- 26:14it's the matter, Riley. You got your men lying on the ground here,
- 26:17howling like stuck pigs. Sure, but what if I hadn't hit him
- 26:21when he aimed at your NICKI what if i'd missed? Tom, Nick?
- 26:22Your plan work beautifully, the whole thing, getting yourself found by Ramsey's henchman,
- 26:26and my getting rally up here to hear the confession and everything patch.
- 26:30But don't run such a split sec intensive life and death again, NICKI.
- 26:34But my heart won't stand it. But it was worth it just to see
- 26:37Ramsey walk into the trap like a bear looking for honey. Oh, shurey,
- 26:41come on in. Take a look at her handlework. Gee, shut,
- 26:45that's the bomb who tried the primate to the hotsheat. You'll be getting
- 26:49it themselves before long thanks to Nick carter Aly. I want to tell you
- 26:53something. Of all the criminals I've tracked down, catching Ramsey gave me the
- 26:57most pleasure. Trading on the patriotism of school kitchens about the lowest ret in
- 27:03the world. Why that is a nazisar. A guy like this is worse.
- 27:07You're right, Nick, use headed, Nick, oh rally, You've
- 27:08got all the evidence you need, the package of posters in the next room,
- 27:12the package of stickers here, and the confession. Right, Nick,
- 27:15we can take over from here, thinks Okay, Riley song hellong, Nick,
- 27:19so long, Oh Patsy, come on, chin up, carry on
- 27:23and all that sort of O my chin. That's worrying me, Nick.
- 27:26It's having to walk down those ten flights of stairs again. That'll be the
- 27:30fourth trip tonight. Why Patsy, and at your age too, Nick,
- 27:34can't we just sit here on the top step for the next six hours?
- 27:37You think you'd be arrested enough then to walk down the tent flights. I
- 27:41think that by then the elevators will be running again. And what a wonderful
- 27:45invention the elevator is. This has been another of the strange adventures up Nick
- 28:06Carter Master Detective, which are brought to you regularly each week at the same
- 28:08time by w R Mutual. Now tell us a little about next week's story,
- 28:14Nick, Well, next week's story includes rather more adventure than actual detecting.
- 28:18But if Nick hadn't been able to make the first few deductions that really
- 28:21started him off on the right track, there would have been no advance,
- 28:23and there was adventure, and plenty of it. I came nearer to meeting
- 28:26my match when I met doctor Donaldson, then an an the other time in
- 28:30my career. This doctor Donaldson was a specialist in secret and dangerous poisons,
- 28:34and he tried one of them out on Nick. But in the end I
- 28:37managed to get the better of him and solve a mystery that had the police
- 28:40completely stopped. We call it the Empty Coffin because it was an empty coffin
- 28:42that gave us the first clue. And it was two different doctors making out
- 28:47two separate death certificates for the same death that led to that first clue.
- 28:51Well that's number. Now join us next week for the story of the Empty
- 28:55Coffin. So long, so long, folks, and so long to you
- 28:57Nick and Patsy until next week. In the Strange Adventure you have just heard,
- 29:03Nick Carter was impersonated by Lawn Clark, Patsy by Helen Choate. The
- 29:07story was written for Nick Carter by Bart Conray. Original music was played by
- 29:11Lou White. The entire production was under the direction of Jack McGregor. Next
- 29:30week, at the same time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter
- 29:33entitled The Empty Coffin or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Doctor's poison Them.
- 29:45This story is a copyrighted feature of Street and Smith Publications Incorporated. The
- 29:49Return of Nick Carter is produced in the studios of w o R and is
- 29:52broadcast over most of these stations every Saturday evening at seven o'clock Eastern wartime.
- 29:57And don't forget that The Adventure of Nick's adopted son, Chick Carter broadcast over
- 30:02most of these stations Mondays through Fridays at five thirty pm Eastern wartime. This
- 30:07is mutual welcome back. This was, of course a wartime episode of Nick
- 30:33Carter, and it definitely showed. In fact, I think it's safe to
- 30:37say that we don't have many any other detective series that has so many wartime
- 30:48episodes around. Usually, if there are wartime episodes, you have a maybe
- 30:53a scattering, but most of them post war because of the issues we've talked
- 30:57about with preservation. But Nick Carr, there's one series where the later years
- 31:02of the show are actually the sparcer. I don't know if in retrospect I
- 31:07would compare the people running to the rackets to the Nazis. But during time
- 31:14of worry, it does have a certain logic. I am. I continually
- 31:18am trying to find out who plays the voice of that of the heavy in
- 31:25this episode. I've heard him in quite a few things. The first thing
- 31:27I heard him, he actually was playing the apostle Peter in the radio version
- 31:33of The Greatest Story Ever Told. And cannot find his name. So if
- 31:38there's any listener out there who knows, I would love to hear from you.
- 31:42All right, Well, now on to listener comments and feedback, And
- 31:45we have this from Joan who regarding Records of Death, and she said that
- 31:52I was thinking I'd heard it all before, but with different characters. It
- 31:55was not Nick Carter in it, but I cannot remember who. And the
- 31:59lady who was recording the records had a softer voice, but basically everything else
- 32:02was the same. And she says that it's a good show to broadcast just
- 32:08before Halloween. It keeps you at the edge of your seats waiting to hear
- 32:12what is going to happen next. I believe it was made into a movie,
- 32:15and I remember them listening to records and trying to figure out who she
- 32:19was and where it did happened. Excellent black and white movie to watch too.
- 32:23Okay, if anyone's aware of the title and that love to hear on
- 32:27that. He says, I was going to tell you before I'd watched two
- 32:29movies on TCM, two Saturday Mornings in a Row with Walter Pigeon as Nick
- 32:35Carter and Donald make his Beeswax follow me. I like him. He puts
- 32:38in the comic touch and does help Nick Carter out of some difficult situations with
- 32:45bees. Tom Connickway was in this one to have forgotten its name, but
- 32:49it was a nineteen fifty forty movie. The second one was the called Sky
- 32:53Murders. It was nineteen forties. Also in regard to that, the other
- 33:00one would have been Phantom Raiders. We're only three not Nick Carter movies,
- 33:05and the other one was a thirty nine. She also says, I've noticed
- 33:09lately at the beginning of your shows that your voice has mellowed and you were
- 33:12speaking in a more relaxed way. I like this new style and has proved
- 33:15the quality of your presentations. Too. Well done, Adam, Well,
- 33:20thanks so much, Joan. I appreciate you listening, and I'll continue to
- 33:23watch and let you know what I think of the other Nick Carter movies.
- 33:28Right now, I'm working through the Saint movies, and I've also got one
- 33:32Philip Marl movie from the nineteen forties I haven't seen yet, so I'm kind
- 33:37of alternating in the Nick Carter movies as I get to them. All Right,
- 33:42Well, that will actually do it for today. We will be back
- 33:45tomorrow with the conclusion of The Calicles Matter and also with an episode of Doctor
- 33:52Tim Detective. In the meantime, sendra comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives
