- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where?
- 0:03We talk all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the three O take
- 0:16presented by Chinook Cedry. This is episode 571.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Korn. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:26Casey, how are we told everybody to buckle up this week?
- 0:31I don't think, I don't think people were ready for this.
- 0:34I can't keep up, man. There's a lot going on.
- 0:37I, I swear I go to bed after the games have finished for that
- 0:42given night and the standings show me one thing and then I
- 0:47wake up the next morning and it's like Nope, just kidding.
- 0:51Actually this team's only 1/2 game back.
- 0:53So it's like, dude, so much is happening right now.
- 0:56I know just glued to the standings and I feel like it.
- 1:04I don't know why it feels like, OK, when I looked at it last
- 1:07night, it was 1/2 game. Now it's 2 1/2.
- 1:10Like it's like I don't what happened?
- 1:13Who shifted where? Why did that grow that much?
- 1:17Like it's just it's all over the place.
- 1:20You I blinked in the Mariners. You have have won the West and
- 1:26it's not even that close. Like what?
- 1:29What is? That about I, I said right
- 1:32before we hopped on, I said, oh man, I wish I'd, I'd, I'd
- 1:35checked the standings right before we hopped on.
- 1:37I said, oh, I thought there was a shot the Padres could actually
- 1:39win the West. Because I swear like 3 days,
- 1:42like 2-3 days ago, it was, it was, I thought like 1/2 game or
- 1:47maybe a game at most. And I know, you know, you know,
- 1:53a game or two can be made-up in a night or two.
- 1:55But you get what I'm saying, though.
- 1:56It's just this feeling of like, I've I had this, I had this
- 2:00sense that things were closer. Maybe things were further.
- 2:02It goes back to what we talked about last episode with this
- 2:04Tigers collapse where it was like.
- 2:08What? 50 how did 15 how did a 15 1/2
- 2:12game collapse without any of us really realize?
- 2:15I mean, I'm, I, I would venture say Tigers fans were well aware
- 2:18of what was happening as they're watching it day in and day out.
- 2:22But I, I, I, my sense of time, the end of September going into
- 2:29the post season really messes with my sense of time because I
- 2:32think one day has happened, but the standings apparently tells
- 2:36me that three or four days have actually happened.
- 2:39So I don't really know. I don't really know what to
- 2:41think. Me neither.
- 2:44But you mentioned the Mariners. Let's start there for the first
- 2:48time. Since 2:00. 1001 Whoa, finishing
- 2:55atop the American League West due due in part to a Cal Raleigh
- 3:03multi Homer game and talking about, you know, maybe having a
- 3:08false sense of understanding this or that.
- 3:12I saw that Cal Raleigh had a two Homer game to give him 59 and 60
- 3:18on the season, which we'll get into that in a minute.
- 3:22But I thought there's no way. And I don't want to be put on
- 3:26record as you know, spewing conspiracies because we would
- 3:28never do such a thing. We never never do that on that
- 3:31show. I'm going, is it just me or does
- 3:37this guy have a multi Homer game every night now, it seems.
- 3:40But then I went back and checked and it's it's not as bad as you
- 3:43think. I mean, he's, he's most
- 3:46certainly heated back up, but I, I just feel like here for a
- 3:52while it's been Cal, Raleigh, Homer every single night.
- 3:56Yeah, so true. It's crazy, man.
- 4:00And like I, I thought no one liked to hit there.
- 4:04I thought that was like what people were saying about
- 4:07Seattle. No one likes hitting here.
- 4:10Stats go crazy now. Like we've seen the dip in Gino
- 4:13Suarez, like he struggled his first tour there.
- 4:16Now him being traded back here, like you're kind of seeing it
- 4:19happen again. Have people said that about?
- 4:24Yeah, 100% the people. Oh yeah, they sure have.
- 4:28Who was it? I, I for a second I thought you
- 4:31were talking about Oracle and I'm like, no, we this isn't
- 4:33Oracle. But no, you're right.
- 4:35T-Mobile is definitely right there.
- 4:37Yeah, it was. Who was it?
- 4:45Maybe it was Gino Swartz. I don't know.
- 4:47Somebody talked about like, I just couldn't see the ball
- 4:49there. I don't know what it is.
- 4:50She can't see the ball there. It's not.
- 4:53Necessarily, that was recent. That was that conversation
- 4:55happened somewhat recently. I remember, yeah.
- 4:57I don't remember who it was, but I remember that being said,
- 4:59yeah. But anyway, it's just like it's
- 5:01it's crazy that I don't know, just seems to be immune to it.
- 5:06But that first ball, the 59? We'll get into that, we'll get
- 5:12into that, we'll get into that, but the Mariners American League
- 5:16West champs every day that passes by.
- 5:23I, I, I have yet it's still a game time decision.
- 5:28Like I, I won't know until it's October, but it's, I'm still on
- 5:32the fence as to whether or not I feel like I can commit my heart
- 5:36and soul to this team. Because, because just the other
- 5:40day I was pulling together our, our prediction graphic template
- 5:45for this postseason. Because, you know, we like doing
- 5:47predictions at the beginning of each stage of the postseason.
- 5:49So I'm, you know, I'm getting those templates ready and I'm,
- 5:52I'm sitting there just staring, staring a little extra at the
- 5:55Mariners logo. And I'm like, I don't know what
- 5:58to think about you right now. But every day it seems that
- 6:03they're giving us more of a reason to believe.
- 6:06Yeah, I don't know. Where are you at on them?
- 6:09Same I don't know why I look at them and I'm like I can't help
- 6:14it, just like me me, but I'm that way.
- 6:19Literally about the entire American League in most of the
- 6:22National League. This is the most up for grabs
- 6:25season I think I've I can remember in recent memory.
- 6:31Because I feel, well, to your point, a team that I feel like
- 6:34we were we were pretty high on there for at the very least a
- 6:38week or two as we've gotten closer to October was the Blue
- 6:42Jays. And if they're able to squeak
- 6:44out, well, you know, if they if they get the division, get the
- 6:48first round bye, do they lose a little bit of that it factor if
- 6:56they're sitting on their hands for.
- 6:59To me it seems like momentum has been a little bit, it's shifting
- 7:05or has shifted in Toronto. Think they're playing a little
- 7:10tight? Well nervous at the time of this
- 7:14recording they have dropped the 1st 2:00.
- 7:16We can say. They've lost the series, they've
- 7:18lost the series, they've dropped the first two fighting from
- 7:22being swept. If they get swept tonight and
- 7:27and the Yankees win the the division has been lost.
- 7:30I mean, this is the closest the division race has been since
- 7:33like beginning of I think July. So it sounds right.
- 7:40It's been like a couple months of like really solid baseball
- 7:43from them. And I'm not I'm not saying that
- 7:45they are like suddenly imploding.
- 7:47I don't think it's anywhere near what has happened in Detroit and
- 7:51and Cleveland, But like, it's just, I mean, even even what's
- 7:56the space manager came out and said that, you know, it feels
- 7:59like the sky is falling even though it's not, it feels like
- 8:01it is. And there's a little bit of free
- 8:04fall going on. So it's, it's, it's very strange
- 8:09all around. It's just it's kind of feels up
- 8:11for grabs. It feels like you're you're
- 8:16expecting certain teams to respond in a certain way and
- 8:19like you get punched in the mouth.
- 8:20Are they going to fight back? And then like they're not
- 8:23fighting back. And like I said before, like I,
- 8:27I feel like a week ago the West wasn't like this.
- 8:31And now all the sudden it's like the Mariners could win this
- 8:35division by 567 games when it's when it's said and done.
- 8:38Like what? Where did that come from?
- 8:41But I don't know. I'm I'm kind of just up in the
- 8:43air about the Mariners. I'm I'm up in the air.
- 8:47Seems like Coolio is like had a really good second-half.
- 8:50Obviously Cow's, you know, Raleigh's been doing his thing.
- 8:53Gino, we don't know what he is. Is he going to turn it on in the
- 8:58postseason? Is he going to kind of go back
- 9:01to the Diamondback form like Randy's Randy?
- 9:05There's there's a lot going on that I like.
- 9:08There's a lot going on that I have question marks attached to.
- 9:12We know what they're pitching is.
- 9:13We know what their bullpens like.
- 9:16They're going to be a problem, I know that much.
- 9:18They're obviously a problem right now, but I don't know if I
- 9:22can look at any one team in the AL and just be like, Oh yeah, I
- 9:25feel good about you. They all have some holes.
- 9:31Which could prove itself helpful to the Mariners, who, as we
- 9:36know, we're seeking their first World Series, first first World
- 9:42Series appearance. Yeah, much less title.
- 9:47Let's, let's, let's get there first.
- 9:50But yeah, I'm like I said, I'm, I'm sort of still on the fence.
- 9:54And I know that's going to rub some people the wrong way.
- 9:57And I've already been getting people reaching out to me being
- 10:00like, oh, this aged well in response to my take where I said
- 10:03still taking the Astros because if you remember, Mariners went
- 10:08on, I believe it was at a nine game-winning streak and.
- 10:11Yeah, and you said they were still a game back.
- 10:13Wasn't that like a week? Ago.
- 10:14Well, no, I think they were. They were up a game at that
- 10:16point. And I'm like with the I say it
- 10:20all the time, the law of averages.
- 10:22Yeah, I felt like it things were going to level out there.
- 10:24And that to me, that just meant that the Astros had to play
- 10:28slightly better baseball than the Mariners for the last week,
- 10:322 weeks and the division was going to be theirs.
- 10:34But the Mariners just continued to win.
- 10:36They obviously went into Houston and swept, took care of business
- 10:39there. So, you know, I got to eat crow
- 10:41there. But it all that to say, it's
- 10:46just a lot of winning. And I wonder if it's too much at
- 10:51this may not make sense to people, but it's it to me, it
- 10:53begs the question too much winning for the Mariners heading
- 10:57into the postseason. That's what's like you don't
- 11:00it's I don't think it's a crazy take because it's like there's
- 11:05something in a hot streak. There's something in that first
- 11:11round bye. You know what I mean?
- 11:13Like there's something in that there's something weird about
- 11:16that where like you got so hot at the right time, you're
- 11:19peeking you almost you you don't want to take a day off.
- 11:23You don't want to take a game off and then the amount of time
- 11:26that is taken off. Like we've seen certain teams
- 11:29where that kind of, it kind of bites them.
- 11:31But then at the same time, like we've also seen teams that get
- 11:36hot to get into the wild card and then get get waxed in the
- 11:39first round. Like I don't think there's a set
- 11:42formula with what works for each team or what works.
- 11:46Each year is different. Each roster is different.
- 11:48I, I have no idea. I genuinely have no clue where I
- 11:54want to put my money on it. Well let me ask you this, are
- 11:59you putting your money on Cal Raleigh to win the MVP if he
- 12:03somehow reaches or surpasses Judges Homer record?
- 12:13I I think it's already is, I think the 60 mark already
- 12:19already got him there. Whether he passes the record or
- 12:22not, he would need three and three games, which is not crazy,
- 12:29but it's not easy, right? Which reminds me, I don't even
- 12:31know if I finished my thought from earlier about the
- 12:33conspiracy thing, but it made me wonder.
- 12:35I'm like, are we, are we doing the judge esque thing where it's
- 12:39like maybe these baseballs are a little different for, for
- 12:43Raleigh down the stretch because everybody's talking about big
- 12:46dumper. I think I, I don't know about
- 12:48prior to this point, but post last night, I think you're going
- 12:53to start seeing new like kind of the same way they gave new
- 12:56baseballs to the umpires that were like specifically marked,
- 12:59specifically like authenticated for those moments.
- 13:02I think once he gets to, I think now, I think now for every AB,
- 13:08you're going to see new balls being delivered to the pitcher
- 13:12for those, for those at bats for these moments.
- 13:15I'm not. I'm not saying that Cal
- 13:17Raleigh's baseballs are juice. I'm not.
- 13:21But we're not not saying that. I'm not saying it.
- 13:24Rawlings, MLB, they've all admitted to it at different
- 13:26times in the last few. Years so yeah so we're not crazy
- 13:30that's that's what I'm saying just just you know don't take
- 13:33everything at face value. If you learn anything from
- 13:35baseball, if you learn anything from the news, politics, don't
- 13:40take it for face value. Just use use this little
- 13:43inconsequential Cal Raleigh scenario as a learning lesson,
- 13:47as a, as a, as an opportunity to be reminded of that as you go
- 13:51out elsewhere in life. The so you think it's his, you
- 13:59think 60 was, was really the, the, the last benchmark that he
- 14:02needed to reach. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:05And I've, I've been watching like I see a watch a ton of
- 14:07videos like everyone else where it's just like they compare the
- 14:11stats, but then they also bring up moments in history where you
- 14:16know the whole Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams one where you know, Ted
- 14:20hit over 400 and didn't win it there.
- 14:23I think there's narratives that play.
- 14:25It's the catching position that I think it's like this almost
- 14:30like golden goose where it's so rare.
- 14:32The last MVP was Posey and 12 and there was like a narrative
- 14:36attached to it. And Posey's numbers were not
- 14:38better than Ryan Bronze. Like there's, I think it's done.
- 14:45We've seen the odds shift that I think on, on Vegas odds where I
- 14:51think it's -300 in favor of Cal Raleigh now and then Judge is up
- 14:55to like plus 150. Yeah.
- 15:01I mean, even even if even if Judge goes crazy then and smacks
- 15:06a couple more these last few games, like I, I, even if it's a
- 15:11gap of six or seven home runs and that's it.
- 15:16I think it's the fact that he like a catcher switch hitter.
- 15:20It's the Mariners, like First Division.
- 15:24You know what I'm saying? Like there's so much that's in
- 15:26it that I I think it's done. I think it's Cal Raleigh's. 7th
- 15:34player to reach 60 homers, joining Babe Ruth, Rodger Maris,
- 15:40Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds and the aforementioned
- 15:44Aaron Judge. I did pull up and I mentioned
- 15:49the multi Homer thing. I did pull up a note about that.
- 15:51He has 11 multi Homer games this year, tied with Judge, Hank
- 15:56Greenberg and Sammy Sosa for the MLB record.
- 15:59So I wasn't crazy. I mean, it doesn't happen every
- 16:01night like I maybe thought it did, but it does happen
- 16:05frequently. Still often 1313 Homer game,
- 16:12right? Yeah, I.
- 16:15Think he had one he didn't get? Four in a game this year, did
- 16:19he? The three definitely happened.
- 16:24Someone got four one year, but I don't think it was.
- 16:31Was it him? Where was that?
- 16:35Gino had four. I know that.
- 16:37That's right. Yeah.
- 16:39Yeah. That was early this year, right?
- 16:41Yeah. When it was like June, he's had
- 16:43like eight hits and seven of them are homers.
- 16:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:50When was that? I'm trying to figure out when
- 16:52that three Homer game was. You said 11 multi home run. 11
- 16:59multi Homer games. Nice.
- 17:04Since we last talked the the Padres and Yankees have
- 17:09clinched. I let's just no, I'll save that.
- 17:19Let's just talk about the Padres first.
- 17:21Really. I mean nothing of note.
- 17:23I feel like you already know where I'm going with the Yankees
- 17:25thing. I'm not happy about it for for
- 17:28obvious reasons, but specifically one in particular.
- 17:31And in fact, it has nothing to do with the Yankees.
- 17:33It has to do with the White Sox. But let's talk about let's talk
- 17:37about the Padres real quick. Nothing, nothing really of note.
- 17:41Like you said, the the the National League wildcards.
- 17:47Everyone's just kind of backing their way into the.
- 17:49Yeah, yeah. It's, it hasn't.
- 17:53It hasn't. They're all pillow fights, like
- 17:55it's a whole big pillow fight. No one's really taken the bull
- 17:59by the horns. It's kind of annoying.
- 18:02And I don't know why I get so fixated on the Reds with this,
- 18:06because the, the, the Diamondbacks are doing the same
- 18:10exact thing, same exact record as the Reds.
- 18:14They're debacter 7 and three and less and Red six and four.
- 18:17They're actually, I think they're playing at this moment,
- 18:19but they've both, they're both coming off losses.
- 18:22But for some reason I'm more angry with the Reds because I'm
- 18:26like you, all you ask for is a shot and you've had this shot
- 18:33for the last month. It feels like where if you just
- 18:37would string together some wins, we wouldn't have to be talking
- 18:42about whether the Mets would be in because they'd be they.
- 18:45They'd be on the outside looking in.
- 18:48But here, Padres kind of no one. Just there's no one in the NL
- 18:54that's just like, yeah, let's go for it.
- 18:56I mean, the Dodgers games have been, have been close the last
- 19:00few nights, Like going into extras last night we saw Kershaw
- 19:03on the 9th. Weird.
- 19:07Yeah, no one's going for it. Can I say real quick, I you, you
- 19:11mentioned the Dodgers. I, I feel like I'm getting a
- 19:15little, I'm, I'm getting a whiff of the Dodgers mojo again.
- 19:20Are you? And I don't exactly know why,
- 19:23but I, I don't know if it's because I saw Sasaki come in
- 19:28last night and and throw well, and I'm like, OK, well, that's,
- 19:32that's one, one measure of reinforcements that they've got
- 19:36to work with. I don't know if it was that or
- 19:38if it's just a collect a collection of other things I've
- 19:42seen, but starting to get a whiff of that mojo.
- 19:47But to your but to your point with them being the the weakest
- 19:51of the record wise, the weakest of the three division leaders in
- 19:54the National League beyond like once you get past them, I'm with
- 19:58you and we we've been saying this, the National League wild
- 20:00card, there's nobody that's at least to us, maybe somebody
- 20:04would disagree, but to us it you've got the Cubs, the Padres,
- 20:09the Mets, the D backs and the Reds, two of which the Cubs and
- 20:14the Padres are obviously already in.
- 20:15But those other teams, it's just nobody is.
- 20:20Nobody's trying to take that leap and be like, no, focus on
- 20:25us. Like, forget about the Cubs,
- 20:28forget about the Mets. Like, yeah, the the Cubs and
- 20:32Padres are in, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're
- 20:35going to have the the momentum that's required.
- 20:42And so when you look at it through that lens, it's like
- 20:44who? Who beyond the division leaders
- 20:46is really making any sort of noise?
- 20:49I will say I I do like that matchup.
- 20:51Cubs, Padres and the wild card. I think that's going to be a fun
- 20:54one. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:56I agree. I don't know man, it's just
- 21:00boring boring. And all of this is just like
- 21:05the. I mean, they'll probably get
- 21:06eliminated today, but the fact that the Cardinals don't
- 21:08officially have an E next to their name?
- 21:10Crazy. Is stupid.
- 21:13Who was it that we checked? Who?
- 21:15Who was it that we noted last episode?
- 21:20It wasn't the Marlins, was it? Remember when you're like I
- 21:26don't know how they don't have a an E next to their name.
- 21:29The fact that the, oh, the Giants have the same record.
- 21:33This is so weird. The Giants have the same record
- 21:36as the Cardinals right now, 78 and 81.
- 21:40They're both 3 1/2 games back in the wild card.
- 21:43The Giants have been eliminated, the Cardinals have not been, and
- 21:47below them is the Marlins. So was the Marlins.
- 21:51Yeah. What is 77 and 81 four games
- 21:54back? But they have not yet been
- 21:56eliminated. That has to come down to
- 21:58matchups, right? Something I don't know.
- 22:01Somebody that does a lot more math than I can.
- 22:04Oh, no, you know what it is? It's the the Marlins.
- 22:07Who did they finish up with? The Mets.
- 22:13That's why. That's exactly why.
- 22:15Craziness. That's hilarious.
- 22:18I I mean, they would have to win out and then probably need some
- 22:21people to lose like the Reds. Hey, let's go Marlins.
- 22:26So Marlins stay alive, man. Let's keep keep pushing it
- 22:29along. They're eight and two in the
- 22:30last 10. See, that's what I'm saying.
- 22:32That's a team that's trying to going for it a little bit, make
- 22:35some, you know, they're not going to be a that's not going
- 22:38to be a rollover series for the the Mets, by the way, like good
- 22:43luck. That's actually of the, I mean,
- 22:45of the teams you could be playing right now, that's
- 22:47probably on the bottom of the list or near the bottom of the
- 22:51list of teams I'd want to round out this season with if you're
- 22:54the Mets and you're knocking on the door if potentially not
- 22:57making the postseason. I'd concur.
- 22:59Crazy. OK, so yeah, mention the Padres
- 23:06getting in on a walk off. By the way, love that I've I've
- 23:09been loving these dramatic entrances into the post season.
- 23:15That's been well documented on here.
- 23:18It's it's you. It's a sign.
- 23:20It's a stamp of approval from me.
- 23:24If you can get in on a win and especially if you can get in on
- 23:27a walk off. So good on the Padres for for
- 23:29passing passing Casey's test. All right, let's talk about it.
- 23:34Yankees also getting in since we talked last, but I don't really
- 23:40want to talk about the Yankees. I want to talk about the White
- 23:43Sox and the play that happened that led to the Yankees getting
- 23:49into the postseason. Michael A Taylor, my guy, my
- 23:54brother, what are you doing? What are you doing?
- 24:01Because you can't tell me that you're you're you're you're
- 24:04laying up there to protect yourself for the offseason
- 24:08because you're anticipating A9 figure contract.
- 24:13OK, I would argue the opposite. No dis disrespect period.
- 24:21What are you doing guy? I mean, that was the easiest
- 24:25situation that would call for laying out for a ball that I've
- 24:29I've possibly ever seen in my life. 2 outs the game when he'd
- 24:33run on second base and you pull up and you're going oh this is a
- 24:39great time to hold him at first as the winning run crosses home
- 24:43plate. What are you?
- 24:44Doing yeah, dude, I think late defensive replacement literally
- 24:50for this reason, plus plus defender.
- 24:57I I don't know if maybe he didn't know the score.
- 25:02I don't know if maybe he lost track of the outs.
- 25:05I no idea. Couldn't tell you.
- 25:09For those curious, it is I think bottom 10, bottom 11, one of the
- 25:15two Caballero hits a bloop single judge scores from second.
- 25:21But I mean, there's two strikes, there's two outs.
- 25:25Judge is going on contact no matter what, so obviously gets a
- 25:28great jump. There is 0% chance that you're
- 25:33going to be able to take that on a hop and throw them out at
- 25:37home. Not that Judge is like blazing
- 25:40speed, but it's like there there's just no way anybody that
- 25:44isn't Giancarlo Stanton is scoring on that ball.
- 25:47So I don't know what Michael, Michael A Taylor is doing there.
- 25:53I'll take it. I'll take it.
- 25:54All Yeah, I believe it, I'm sure.
- 25:56But I, I guess the, I don't know what it was exactly, but
- 25:59apparently the catch probability wasn't as high as you would
- 26:03guess. But like, I think it's more the
- 26:06fact that like, how do you not lay out for that ball?
- 26:08No, we had nothing to lose. We, it was this very season that
- 26:12we had a conversation about the whole catch probability nonsense
- 26:15because wasn't it, was it Denzel Clark?
- 26:19Was that the catch that we talked about where it was like
- 26:22had a catch probability like 95% or there was a catch this year
- 26:27that prompted a conversation about how it's a load of
- 26:30malarkey. The whole catch probability
- 26:32thing is a joke because it's like, what?
- 26:35What are what are we really looking?
- 26:37At here I don't know. Stupid, But yeah, the last thing
- 26:40I'll say it, the whole forgetting the outs thing, while
- 26:44it's a possibility that that's what happened with Michael A
- 26:47Taylor having spatial awareness, recognizing that Judge is
- 26:52rounding 3rd that I can only imagine you're you're catching
- 26:58out of your peripherals as you're tracking the ball that
- 27:01would tell you shoot, there's two outs.
- 27:06So I don't know if I even buy that.
- 27:08The whole thing was weird. The fact that like you've got to
- 27:12be able to play as an outfielder, like you're not,
- 27:15you're not playing deep in those scenarios, like you're playing
- 27:18shallow. You have to be able to throw
- 27:19them out minimum. So say that is just like a
- 27:21single up the middle. You have to be able to give
- 27:23yourself a chance to throw them out just very straight.
- 27:27I mean, it's the White Sox. It's it's why they're the White
- 27:31Sox. It's.
- 27:32Less the White Sox and more about this epidemic of baseball
- 27:36IQ that I continue to harp on like.
- 27:39Wrong. I'm done.
- 27:43I don't want to talk about any more.
- 27:45Let's talk guardians, Tigers, just.
- 27:48Breeze past, I mean back in the back in the post season, 60th,
- 27:5360th time in franchise history. No, no, no, for sure.
- 27:56Yeah. Hey, you know what?
- 27:58Hey. Thanks.
- 28:04Clap it up. Breaking news The New York
- 28:09Yankees have clinched a spot in the 2025 postseason.
- 28:16Let's let's talk about it. That's it.
- 28:20Is this? Team winning the World Series.
- 28:22I have no idea. Probably not.
- 28:27Sounds like a great time to to move on to our next topic.
- 28:31Let's talk guardians. No, is there Is there something
- 28:34you want to say about the Yankees?
- 28:35Joke and decide. Is there something you want to
- 28:37say about the Yankees? Just comes down to their
- 28:40bullpen. The bullpen can be good.
- 28:44Let somebody yes. Who?
- 28:48Two questions. I'm glad you mentioned your
- 28:50bullpen because that reminded me of another question I had for
- 28:52you. First question, as it pertains
- 28:55to the bullpen, who do you want? I I haven't been watching
- 29:00Yankees games closely because AI don't want to and BI don't care
- 29:06who I'm. I'm guessing they've sort of, I
- 29:09don't want to say pigeon holed, but identified who their 9th
- 29:13inning guy is going to be. Yeah, Ben has been doing it.
- 29:16Is it Ben? OK.
- 29:18And there no indication outside of that like first week that he
- 29:21got traded, everything else has looked good?
- 29:23And there's no indication that's going to change.
- 29:25It's going to be it's going to be him.
- 29:27Yeah. Interesting.
- 29:29OK, Yeah. Where is Weaver been?
- 29:31Has he just been a an eighth guy?
- 29:33Has he been a just a high leverage wherever he need, he's
- 29:36needed guy. High leverage wherever he's
- 29:38needed 7th 8th sometimes 6th to like finish the 6th going to the
- 29:427th sure, but it's been off and on.
- 29:44He's been he's been looking may Devin Williams is Devin
- 29:48Williams. I have no faith ever.
- 29:50No one ever should Duvall. No disrespect.
- 29:54Flip of the coin for Duvall. Definitely can't come in with.
- 29:57Anyone on? I completely forgot he was on
- 29:59that team, I'm not going to lie. And then Fernando Cruz, like
- 30:05there's pieces there. Like that's what's crazy is that
- 30:07you're like the depth is there. I just one of you, please just
- 30:11figure it out or two of you. 2 would be two would be ideal.
- 30:15Ideal for you, not for me. Other question, we either, you
- 30:21either mentioned it off the top or right before we hopped on,
- 30:24you mentioned the division regarding the Jays, Yankees
- 30:29right now, I think it's tied both at 90 wins with four games
- 30:33to go. Well, by the time you're hearing
- 30:35this, probably 3 maybe as this team is constructed, meaning the
- 30:41Yankees, as this Yankees team is constructed right now, as
- 30:45they're playing right now, would you prefer a wild card or a
- 30:50division? Division, yeah, yeah, for sure,
- 30:58definitely division because I think it I think it makes a
- 31:01little bit more of like a like a stamp considering what the last
- 31:09two months has been three months now.
- 31:12And they've been they've been looking really good for like the
- 31:15last 3-4 weeks now. But just the second-half of the
- 31:20season is like, and the fact that it like there isn't like I
- 31:25said before, this isn't like a collapse of the Blue Jays by any
- 31:28means. Have they have they been playing
- 31:30a little uptight the last week? Yeah.
- 31:33I mean, we knew that they had to come back down to earth at some
- 31:35point. But they haven't like completely
- 31:38scuffled. It has been the fact that, like
- 31:40the Yankees have been playing good ball.
- 31:43So I don't know. It still comes down to they need
- 31:46to beat teams that they need to beat.
- 31:49They need to be able to to finish the season now strong.
- 31:53So if I'm hearing what you're saying, you're saying you would
- 31:56prefer the stamp of validation that would come with a division
- 32:01title? Yeah, over.
- 32:03Potential strategy of getting a wild card and and favourable
- 32:07match ups and things like that. Yeah, because it allows
- 32:09everything to reset. It allows some time for the
- 32:11bullpen to like rest and they they don't have a ton of
- 32:17rotational depth to to I think go through the wild card round
- 32:24and turn right into an ALDS right after fair.
- 32:29So yeah. Very fair.
- 32:37Let's talk about any other thoughts on the Yankees where we
- 32:39move on. I want to give you the floor.
- 32:45I just wanted to confirm. I mean, it is going to come
- 32:49unless the Mariners just completely run the table, which
- 32:53is also in play. Like it's not crazy like that.
- 32:57I don't think people are understanding this.
- 32:58It's not just like rankings that are in this question or whether
- 33:02who's going to win this, but it's also like who's going to
- 33:04win that, that first round by like that's kind of also up in
- 33:08the in the air with everything. But I think what it's looking
- 33:11like, just based on how the Central has finished up, that
- 33:16there is going to be a first round bye with the East and the
- 33:19West. However, whoever takes those and
- 33:22then the Central is going to be the one playing that last wild
- 33:26card team. So yeah, I think everything,
- 33:31yeah, that's it. That's all I got.
- 33:33Because as of this moment, it would be, it'd be at this very
- 33:39moment, it would be Jays, Red Sox tiebreaker, right?
- 33:45But I'm saying matchups. For the wild card, it'd be
- 33:47Yankees, Red Sox and then Guardians, Tigers.
- 33:50Yeah. And then if the Yankees take the
- 33:52East, it would then be. Jays.
- 33:56Red Sox, right? Yeah.
- 34:00And then still guardians. Tigers.
- 34:02The Astros are only one game back, like the Tigers are just
- 34:07this is historic. I don't think it's being talked
- 34:09about enough. Well, let's talk about it.
- 34:11Guardians, Tigers Guardians take the first two again.
- 34:15This is this is ahead of the third game, third and final game
- 34:19of the series, which is is that a is that game tonight 640 Yeah.
- 34:25OK so guardians have already taken the series.
- 34:30They I tweeted after the first game was it game one when scuba
- 34:35went and they they won that get the guardians won the game that
- 34:40scuba started. I don't, I don't believe he got
- 34:43hit with a loss. But but they did lose, yeah.
- 34:46Yeah, but they lost the game that Scuba started.
- 34:48And I said something to the effect of the Guardian.
- 34:52The Tigers lose the game that Scuba started.
- 34:55Congratulations to the Guardians on their American League Central
- 34:58title, because you can't if, if, if the the primary talking point
- 35:04for the Tigers is who their number one is on the bump.
- 35:09And that's kind of it. You need to make sure that when
- 35:13you're faced with a situation with games that you have to win,
- 35:17you win those games that are started by him.
- 35:20And they didn't do that, which leads me to believe that this
- 35:24division is all but locked up. And sure, it's possible that the
- 35:28Tigers turn things around, but they have looked so sloppy.
- 35:32I think that they're on an 8 game losing streak, aren't they?
- 35:35Was it, was it 9? Is it 8 or 9?
- 35:38You might be right. I think it was.
- 35:39Yeah. 81 and 9 in their last 10 have lost eight in a row coming
- 35:43into Thursday. And and the fact that like you,
- 35:46if you managed to squeak out that last spot in the wild card,
- 35:51you're going to have to go face them.
- 35:53It's like we. Talked about, yeah, it's like.
- 35:55You have no momentum whatsoever. Unbelievable.
- 36:00Yeah. Good luck going into Cleveland
- 36:05having just in this scenario in which you completely collapse,
- 36:10you lose the Central, the Guardians in it, obviously going
- 36:13on to win that division and that's all anybody's talking
- 36:16about. Good luck going on the road to
- 36:20the place that hosts the team in which you lost that division to
- 36:27and thinking you're going to come out of there victorious.
- 36:29Not going to happen, I'm sorry. So we can just go ahead and say
- 36:32right now that the Tiger season is all but over.
- 36:35I'm with you. That's fine.
- 36:37Am I? Am I being a victim of the
- 36:39moment right now? Or did the tiger?
- 36:41Have the Tigers given us every reason to think that that's the
- 36:44case? I think, I think you're doing
- 36:45the math. I think you're you're looking
- 36:47around, you're observing the environment.
- 36:51Taking it in. And you're and you're putting
- 36:54out an educated and I think rather accurate guess.
- 37:00Thank you, thank you. I mean, it's this like people
- 37:07I'm seeing, I'm seeing takes that are giving props to the
- 37:12Guardians. And sure, this collapse doesn't
- 37:15happen if the Guardians aren't playing the way they've been
- 37:17playing over the last month. Plus, however, do not get it
- 37:25twisted, this was a historic collapse and had nothing to do
- 37:31with the Guardians. The Guardians, yes, they won the
- 37:36games that they needed to win, but this was this fall solely on
- 37:42the Tigers. Yeah. 15 1/2 games back and I
- 37:46keep, I keep seeing people saying they, they're going back
- 37:49to, I think like, was it early to mid-september where they're
- 37:54like the Guardians on September? What it such and such a date?
- 37:58We're 11 games back and I'm going, I don't care about that.
- 38:02Like, yeah, it, it puts the, the month of September into
- 38:05perspective and the gap that they had to close.
- 38:07But at the end of the day, don't lose sight of the fact that it
- 38:11was 15 1/2 games. That's the number I will
- 38:14continue to focus on as this downward spiral continues and
- 38:20presumably will result in a rather unfortunate exit.
- 38:24Yep, Yep, Yep, Yep. We talked about looking back
- 38:32like, what did they do with the deadline?
- 38:36Nothing. I thought that was a.
- 38:37Big that that was like a big deal.
- 38:41And I remember, like, people being disappointed in the fact
- 38:44that, like, you didn't do anything and then this weird, I
- 38:47mean. Can I play devil's advocate real
- 38:49quick on that? Sure, sure.
- 38:51If that's. Great position at the time of
- 38:54the deadline. That's what, that's what I'm
- 38:55saying. Like if you're the Tigers,
- 38:56you're looking around, you're going, do we need to offload key
- 39:00prospects if this is the position, like we're quite
- 39:03literally one of, if not the best team in baseball.
- 39:08Do we need to unload prospects to go supplement what we already
- 39:14have here? That's a classic case of looking
- 39:16around, being like, I'm OK with what we have.
- 39:18You hear, you hear owners, owner or front offices that, that take
- 39:22that approach where they're like, we, we like what we have
- 39:24here. And it's like, you're not
- 39:25fooling anybody. You're not kidding anybody.
- 39:28You need to go make additions. But with the Tigers, if you're
- 39:31at the top of the mountain, you're looking around and going,
- 39:33we like what we have here. You can't really fault them.
- 39:36Yeah, I don't, I don't really know what the blame is.
- 39:39I mean, is it roster configuration?
- 39:41Is it lack of moves at the deadline?
- 39:43Is it managing? I don't know, but I'm sure it's
- 39:49a mix of all of it for this kind of collapse tough.
- 39:57Embarrassing what? Would you rather have like last
- 40:01year where you sell off pieces of the deadline and then get hot
- 40:04and sneak into the wild card and like kind of scare some people
- 40:07or this like I don't I. They both suck like both.
- 40:12Both are a rough ending to the story.
- 40:15Yeah, especially with the way that it did end for them last
- 40:18year against the the the Guardians.
- 40:22Yeah, same, same ending. A lot of a lot of same
- 40:26characters in this. Story just connected those
- 40:28pieces. Guardians have the Tigers number
- 40:31apparently. My goodness.
- 40:33Tigers are praying for expansion and division realignment.
- 40:39So we want, we, we don't, we want no part of the Guardians
- 40:43moving forward, and for good reason.
- 40:45I saw a note speaking about what the Guardians have been doing.
- 40:48Well, I saw a note that Tanner Bybee won his third straight
- 40:54start and allowed only one run and six innings.
- 40:57This is the this is the note here extending the streak of
- 41:00Guardian starters allowing 2 or fewer runs to 19 games.
- 41:07And why is that not getting talked about?
- 41:08That's that's very impressive. That's nice.
- 41:12But you know how how easy it would be for a starter to just
- 41:17have a blow up outing? Yeah.
- 41:20Even if it wasn't, you know, necessarily projected or
- 41:23expected. Read it again for me.
- 41:26I need to hear. Guardian starters allowing 2 or
- 41:29fewer runs has happened 19 games in a row.
- 41:35Wow, wow. That's very impressive.
- 41:45Because what I mean, it's just it's a ripple effect.
- 41:47Like you don't have to score that many runs when this this is
- 41:50the case. You don't have to worry about
- 41:52stressing out your bullpen. You don't have to worry about
- 41:55throwing somebody in in a mop up roll to, you know what I mean?
- 41:58Like there's so much that fault, like Domino's fall in place
- 42:02after that. Wow, wow, wow.
- 42:06How about it and putting a bow on the the the collapse?
- 42:11Just in case anybody was wondering, the 1914 Boston
- 42:14Braves were 15 games back in the NL on July 4th and rallied to
- 42:21rallied to win by 10 1/2 games. So you closed at 25.
- 42:30That's a 25 1/2 game spread. It's a big swing.
- 42:35Since baseball went to division play in 1969, the biggest
- 42:38deficit overcome was 14 games by the 1978 Yankees to win the
- 42:42East, which we don't need to talk about.
- 42:45But anyway, the the, yeah, this is, this is this is like nothing
- 42:53we've ever seen before. Good stuff man.
- 42:56I love baseball. It's a crazy.
- 42:59I was thinking about that today. I'm like we, you know, we you
- 43:02say it from time to time, but when you're actually living it,
- 43:05the fact that there you will wake up in any giving given
- 43:09season and see something in this game that you have never seen
- 43:13before. We have never seen a collapse
- 43:16this bad. In all of our years of watching
- 43:18baseball, we have never seen a collapse this dramatic.
- 43:23Here for it. Unbelievable.
- 43:26Looking around the rest of the league, I feel like we kind of
- 43:29touched on both races and that, you know, in the AL and the NL,
- 43:33but is there anything that we didn't necessarily cover?
- 43:39Yeah, we we sort of touched on the Astros a little bit, but
- 43:42worth noting that they're riding A5 game losing streak currently
- 43:47a game out at this moment. I don't know that there's much
- 43:55else that we that we missed. Think that kind of wraps it up
- 44:02really honestly. Honestly, it doesn't even
- 44:04matter. Things could change.
- 44:06By tomorrow, By tonight. Tomorrow.
- 44:08Yeah, I mean it. Yeah.
- 44:09It's very possible the Red Sox will be punching their ticket
- 44:13tonight with either a win or a Houston loss.
- 44:18So I'm I'm really hoping I already I already I already.
- 44:24Talk about them a little bit because like we, I don't know, I
- 44:27obviously I'm not like super tapped into those games either.
- 44:30Like what are you seeing? Where what are their strengths?
- 44:32What are their, what are their weaknesses?
- 44:34Like what's been going down lately?
- 44:38I'm a little, well, I was going to say, fearful about not having
- 44:46the big bats in that line up. However, Bregman has he's he's
- 44:53heated up a little bit, which which is encouraging so.
- 44:57You like, you have that in the Bank of like what Bregman does
- 45:00during this time of year, correct?
- 45:02Yeah, like you, you kind of know that the the resume is going to
- 45:06show up, I think. And I'm very much looking
- 45:08forward to watching the athleticism put on display from
- 45:12guys like Duran Rafaela. So we shall see.
- 45:16And then obviously with the year, I mean, we've we've
- 45:18mentioned it multiple times, but the year that Trevor Story's
- 45:21having has been incredible, which by the way, I saw a friend
- 45:24of the pod, Greg Amsinger, put out a video the other day and he
- 45:28was like, well, Story is most definitely going to opt out of
- 45:30his contract. He's I think he said Story am
- 45:32Bregman. I'm like, I wouldn't be so sure
- 45:35of that. I mean, he's having a great
- 45:38year, but I don't, I don't even know what's left on that
- 45:41contract, but that that might be a little risky.
- 45:43I don't I don't know that anybody's knocking on the door
- 45:46for the potential of Trevor Story beyond this year.
- 45:50I don't know. Yeah, I would agree any who's.
- 45:53But yeah, I'm kind of hoping, as I was saying, I'm kind of hoping
- 45:58that, you know, you never want your team to lose.
- 46:01But I'm it would be nice maybe if they could punt to Friday
- 46:05when we're actually in town for the series against the Tigers,
- 46:09that would be cool. But that would require both them
- 46:13losing and the Astros winning, which could happen.
- 46:16But that's just to your point. Anything could change.
- 46:20We could be talking about new additions to the postseason
- 46:23field as early as tonight. So we shall see.
- 46:26But that's all for the the playoff picture.
- 46:30The last thing I wanted to talk about here though was the news
- 46:33from earlier this week, the ABS system officially making its way
- 46:38to Major League Baseball for regular season play in the 2026
- 46:44season. So how how we feeling about
- 46:46that? I don't hate it like I didn't
- 46:49hate it when we watch it in spring training.
- 46:52I, I, I hope this is as far as it goes, obviously, like I don't
- 46:57want to go full blown robo lumps.
- 47:00I think the challenge system is like it's just a little
- 47:04sprinkle. It's like it's a wild card.
- 47:06It's it, it adds a whole new narrative.
- 47:12I think there I think there's strategy involved, which is kind
- 47:15of unique about it. Like, you know, managers having
- 47:18certain conversations with certain players, you know,
- 47:22certain pitchers versus, you know, trusting your catcher.
- 47:25Like how often are you like we're so used to seeing like
- 47:31catcher by committee, kind of like there's not really like a
- 47:35ton of full blown full time catchers.
- 47:37So you most, you know, it's kind of like running backs in the
- 47:40NFL, like most teams have two options there.
- 47:43So it's like, what catchers are good with that?
- 47:45Which which ones aren't? I I think there's a whole new
- 47:50aspect to it. I think you'll still have the
- 47:54the arguing with managers. You'll still have people tossed.
- 48:01I, I think there's, there's still strategy involved.
- 48:05There's still human element involved.
- 48:07I feel like this is the, the best case scenario with this
- 48:11progressive change that we're like was coming in inevitably.
- 48:16So like I, I hope that it doesn't get to that next stage
- 48:19of just umpires are meaningless. I hope this is as far as it'll
- 48:23get and I I kind of like what will come out of it regular
- 48:31season, by the way, before you go like that's 2026 regular
- 48:35season, right? Or is it going into effect for
- 48:40the postseason as well? Do we know?
- 48:44I don't know. I know last year or test this
- 48:49year. Sesaden spring Training.
- 48:50The vote, while not unanimous, confirmed that it's coming in
- 48:572026. I'm not seeing anything about
- 49:02the postseason. OK, something to watch out for I
- 49:05guess. But we But we do know the time.
- 49:07To find out. It's coming, yeah, it's coming
- 49:09as early as this coming 2026. So that we do know.
- 49:16But full transparency, I don't, I don't think I knew the full
- 49:19parameters to this system. I thought it was going to be on
- 49:24a more regular basis, but I did not realize that it was only
- 49:27they're only going to allow each Team 2.
- 49:31And it's not a use one and you keep 2 if you get it right,
- 49:35right like it's 2, that's it. The So here's Here's what it
- 49:41says. Hitters, pitchers and catchers
- 49:42will be the only ones allowed to trigger the system by tapping
- 49:44their head, and if a challenge is successful, the pitch will be
- 49:47shown on in stadium video boards.
- 49:52Sorry, that was a so the end of that sentence.
- 49:54If a challenge is successful, teams will retain it.
- 49:57OK, so you keep getting it right, you're just going to?
- 50:02Yeah. And then it says teams that run
- 50:05out of challenges over the 1st 9 Indians will be granted an extra
- 50:08challenge in the 10th, while those that still have unused
- 50:11challenges will simply carry them into extras.
- 50:16So the most you could take into extras is or the most you could
- 50:20have at any point, I guess by the end of the game is 3 if you
- 50:24didn't use your two during the the 9 innings.
- 50:27But then you get to extras, you get the you get the added bonus
- 50:30challenge plus your two that carry over is how I'm
- 50:33misinterpreting this. So, yeah, I mean that's, that's
- 50:37digestible is like you said, as long as you don't we're not
- 50:40going full blown, which I'd have to imagine that's that's in the
- 50:43conversation. Well.
- 50:46I mean, look at look, look, look at the Blue Jays, like
- 50:49specifically that George Springer at bat should that we
- 50:52just watched, right? And the one that's going viral
- 50:55right now of that double down the line that was called foul
- 50:58that looked like it went over the bag very next pitch punched
- 51:02out on a very clear ball. Like that is a insanely massive
- 51:09moment. We're talking bases loaded,
- 51:11we're talking division on the line.
- 51:14Like there, there's massive implications to these incorrect
- 51:18calls. And in reality, like what hill
- 51:24do you want to die on? Do you want integrity of the
- 51:28game? Do you want accurate calls to be
- 51:31accurate? Or are you like still hanging on
- 51:34to like, no, like the human error, Like I, I'm not saying
- 51:37you wrong either way. I think that's just like the
- 51:40biggest part of this argument. And for me, I, I, I think some
- 51:48of these moments are too big to pass up and like under a
- 51:52microscope, like we've seen just horrendous umpiring specifically
- 51:56behind the plate. And I, I don't see any way where
- 52:01it's like the only thing that bugs me is like the where they
- 52:06zoom in and it's like less than .1 of an inch that it misses the
- 52:11zone. You know what I mean?
- 52:12Like I think aspects of that will probably get under my skin
- 52:16when it's going the same way. You see like a stolen base
- 52:19attempt, guy comes off the bag for a split second and the tag
- 52:22is still being held on. You're like, all right, well,
- 52:25that's now what this has become. I think the strike zone limits
- 52:31that. It's very black and white.
- 52:32It's either in the zone or not. And I think it adds out, it adds
- 52:36strategy into the game and when it comes down to it, like I want
- 52:41correct calls. Yeah.
- 52:45I mean, I think it's going to be and maybe when the the news of
- 52:49this system first breaking it, like I'm sure we had different
- 52:53opinions on it. But where I'm at today, knowing
- 52:56what we know about their plan for 2026 is that I feel like
- 53:02this is going to be something because when it happened, if you
- 53:05remember when we're at the All Star game and they incorporated
- 53:08the, the, the they were testing it out in that in that game and
- 53:11you saw it pop up on the screen and everybody around us is
- 53:14going. I feel like it's going to be
- 53:17like the pitch clock where there's going to be some initial
- 53:20blowback when it when it's introduced league wide in games
- 53:25that matter. But I feel like it's going to be
- 53:27one of those things again, going back to the point that it's only
- 53:29two per team for the game. I think it's going to be one of
- 53:33those things that at least for now, encompasses the best of
- 53:39both worlds. The people that still want the
- 53:41umpires to be part of the game, but also people that want the
- 53:44option to maybe challenge some some meaningful comma impactful
- 53:49calls that could change the game.
- 53:53It could impact, you know, wins or losses.
- 53:57And for the people that want the umpires and want limited
- 54:01interruptions, it's only we're we're only talking about two
- 54:04here. So it's going to I think it's
- 54:06going to have minimal impact on, you know, flow of game.
- 54:08But I do think it will be silly when, you know, when you think
- 54:13about the extremes of these new rules that the league
- 54:16introduces, it's like, OK, so does this mean that a pitch is
- 54:21made? Pitcher disagrees with the call,
- 54:24taps his head. Everybody is waiting with bated
- 54:27breath. And then there it is, your
- 54:31division winning champions. That's the ultimate fear.
- 54:35I get that. It's just going to be, I mean,
- 54:36the, the odds of that happening are slim, I guess.
- 54:39But it's just things you think about where you're like, OK, is
- 54:41this going to be sort of like a like when they check the
- 54:46pictures now it's like you get these entrances, but then you
- 54:50got you got to make a pit stop to get your glove checked.
- 54:53It's like, I don't know, just things to think about.
- 54:55But All in all, I'm not I'm not too upset about it.
- 54:58I think as long as you, like you said, as long as we just don't
- 55:03go full blown, I think we'll be all right.
- 55:07Last last thing real quick props to Paul schemes finishing out
- 55:12the year with A197 made his his final start of the year last
- 55:19night against the Reds going up against hunter green, but
- 55:24finishing the year with A197 safe to say only right only only
