Latest / Fostering Faith / How to be the LIGHT

- 0:00Welcome back family. I am Tracie and we are going
- 0:04to be discussing a topic. After we had a break
- 0:07last week, we were able to just slide away for
- 0:10a few days and go on spring break. And we had
- 0:14such a great time on the beach, on the sand,
- 0:18and enjoying each other's company. And so every
- 0:21year we are just in a season of just wanting
- 0:25to get away, but not knowing if we can get away.
- 0:28And so I always start praying for vacations in
- 0:31January to just to make sure that he's okay with
- 0:35me going and where he wants us to go. If he wants
- 0:38us to stay home, we stay home. If he allows us
- 0:40to go, we go. And so I want to talk about a topic
- 0:44that I seen on a billboard actually coming home
- 0:48from the airport. And it said, love God, repent.
- 0:53And I was like, how is that? gonna bring anybody
- 0:59to Jesus like what does that have to do with
- 1:02like like that is not going to make someone be
- 1:06like oh my gosh like I should repent like that
- 1:10doesn't make no sense and so I'm going to title
- 1:12this episode as how to be the light without being
- 1:16annoying and so in this week we're going to be
- 1:20talking about how to be the light for Jesus without
- 1:22being pushy preachy or just plain awkward It's
- 1:27time to let your faith shine in everyday life,
- 1:29whether it's school, gym, or the work, target
- 1:33runs, you name it. You don't need a Bible megaphone,
- 1:38just a willing heart and a little boldness. And
- 1:42so, hey friends, welcome back to Fostering Faith.
- 1:44I'm so glad that you tuned in this week as we
- 1:46took last week off. My name is Tracy. In today's
- 1:48episode, we're going to be talking about scripture.
- 1:53soul searching and straight up laughter because
- 1:55talking about something that can make us all
- 1:59feel a little weird. And so how to be the light
- 2:03for Jesus without being annoying. You said it.
- 2:06I said it. You know exactly what I'm talking
- 2:09about. The moment when someone starts talking
- 2:11about Jesus, but you're doing it in a way that
- 2:13makes everyone want to hide behind the produce
- 2:17section at Kroger. Now, Let's not get me wrong.
- 2:23We are called to share the gospel. Jesus said,
- 2:26Matthew 5, 14 says, be the light of the world,
- 2:29a town built on a hill that cannot be hidden.
- 2:32But here's the thing. The light doesn't mean
- 2:36blinding people with high beams, okay? So let's
- 2:42get real. Have you ever been on the receiving
- 2:46end of, hey, do you know Jesus as your Lord and
- 2:49Savior? while you're trying to grab some almond
- 2:53milk, it's uncomfortable. And sometimes it feels
- 2:56very pushy and performative. And that's not what
- 3:02Jesus modeled. He met people where they were.
- 3:06He asked questions. He listened. He ate with
- 3:09people. He saw them. And that is where we need
- 3:15to begin. We need to build a relationship with
- 3:19people. We need to meet them where they're at,
- 3:21their well, their boat, wherever they're at.
- 3:25We don't need to shove Jesus down anyone's throat.
- 3:30It's not going to do anything. And so by just
- 3:35being who God has created you to be, and he will
- 3:39allow situations to happen for you to give people
- 3:45the good news. And so here's a permission slip
- 3:50to be normal, spiritually filled, and yet relatable.
- 3:54Being the light doesn't mean carrying a megaphone.
- 3:56It means living in the way that makes people
- 3:59say, hey, there's something about her. There's
- 4:04something about him that's just different. And
- 4:08a lot of times I get told that I don't have what
- 4:11is inside of you. I don't have that. It's because
- 4:15I don't know Christ. They don't know the calm.
- 4:18They don't know the peace. They don't know the
- 4:21guy that I get to lay my worries down. And they
- 4:25don't know the guy that fights my battles for
- 4:27me. They don't know the guy that saved me from
- 4:32all of my stupid mistakes. He doesn't, they don't
- 4:35know the people. They don't know Jesus the way
- 4:39that I do. But they can see that I am set apart.
- 4:44They can see that I have calm. They can see that
- 4:46I have, like, how are you so calm during the
- 4:49storm? Like, how are you so, like, why are you?
- 4:52It's because I have Jesus. It's when the coworker
- 4:55is stressed out and you say, hey, can I pray
- 4:58for you? It's when the friend is overwhelmed
- 5:01and you say, you don't have to carry that alone.
- 5:06It's being kind when no one else is. It's not,
- 5:11It's tipping well. It's not cutting people off
- 5:14in traffic with a bumper sticker saying, Jesus
- 5:17loves you. It's not about that. It's about living
- 5:22your life like he did and meeting people like
- 5:28he did and remembering the kindness and the goodness
- 5:31that he has done for you that we get to do it
- 5:36to other people because we have this almighty
- 5:40God And he allows us to live another day after
- 5:48we screwed up. And so we get to extend that grace
- 5:52and mercy to other people. And we have 1 Peter
- 5:573 .15, which says, always be prepared to give
- 6:01an answer to anyone who asks you to give the
- 6:03reason for the hope that you have. But do this
- 6:07with gentleness and respect. Gentleness and respect.
- 6:12Not guilt trips and not judgment. I am not here
- 6:16to judge no one. And I think that is a favorite
- 6:21pastime is that sinners like to judge other sinners.
- 6:27And what you've done, what I've done, what Joe
- 6:32did, what Beth did, whatever your name is, you're
- 6:39no different than me. you're no better than me
- 6:42you're no worse than me and worse i know is not
- 6:46a word but it's fine and the the judge will come
- 6:55in front of all of us and every knee will bow
- 6:58every ear will hear and he's the one that's going
- 7:03to judge that's not my job that's above my pay
- 7:05grade i'm here to love you and walk with you
- 7:09through this and know that I am imperfect and
- 7:12I'm not trying to be perfect and we can do this
- 7:16life together. We can live boldly and lovingly.
- 7:21Jesus never sacrificed truth, but he never bulldozed
- 7:26hearts either. And so have you ever seen or witnessed
- 7:34to somebody and you're like, hey, you look tired
- 7:39like spiritually tired and they looked at you
- 7:44like you had spinach in your teeth and just walked
- 7:47away and you're like okay okay lesson learned
- 7:54let the holy spirit lead you in conversation
- 7:59and not a caffeine crash and so allowing the
- 8:04holy spirit to let you know when to approach
- 8:07somebody Allow him to open the door to have their
- 8:11heart ready to receive the word of God. And it's
- 8:17about allowing people to get to know you first.
- 8:21So you have street credit. And so what are some
- 8:25ways that practically can fit in anyone's life?
- 8:32Okay, one, live it first. People listen more
- 8:38to what you do than what you say. And so I call
- 8:43it street credit. And so whenever you live out
- 8:46something first and then approach somebody, they'll
- 8:50listen to you more because you know what you're
- 8:53talking about. Because you were in that storm
- 8:57and God walked you through it. And so don't preach
- 9:01to somebody if you don't know what you're talking
- 9:03about. If you've not walked through it, they
- 9:08can hear you, but they're not going to listen
- 9:11because you don't know what it's like. And build
- 9:16a relationship. Most people need connection before
- 9:19they'll open up in conversation. And so it's
- 9:23just so many times in clinic, we are allowed
- 9:27the opportunity to be in front of an atheist,
- 9:30to be in front of a Wiccan, to be in front of...
- 9:34all sorts of different beliefs and we are kind.
- 9:41We are patient and we treat them just like we
- 9:45would treat a fellow believer and they know that
- 9:48I am God -centered and Jesus -centered and I
- 9:53don't push religion on anybody, but I love them
- 9:57and they get to see me act and how I speak and
- 10:01how I act on the outside. in the office, outside
- 10:05the office, on social media. And it's about integrity.
- 10:08It's about they get to see me and they're like,
- 10:12man, like how come you don't like do this or
- 10:16do that or whatever? And we just have different
- 10:19standards. And so allowing those people to have
- 10:23a connection with you so their heart is ready
- 10:28to receive that seed that you get to plant. And
- 10:32three, Let the Holy Spirit guide you. Ask him,
- 10:35Lord, what do you want me to say? I just want
- 10:41to say the exact right words that they know that
- 10:43it's from you. There are so many times that I've
- 10:50been in conversation with someone and they're
- 10:52like, how did you know that? Like no one else
- 10:56knew that. Or they'll be... like praying for
- 11:00something or they'll be thinking something and
- 11:03the Holy Spirit will lead. And it is such a beautiful
- 11:08moment because they know that I am connected
- 11:12to the guy that has the answers. And they're
- 11:15like, man, but this could be real. This could
- 11:21be like a real thing. Like, how did you know
- 11:23that? Like, how did you know that's what I was
- 11:25feeling? How did you know that I had that conversation?
- 11:27Bro, I did not know. I did not know that, but
- 11:30he did. He did. And I have fully surrendered
- 11:33my life. Everything that I've had, it is his.
- 11:37Use it. Use it to grow your kingdom. And share
- 11:42your story, not a sermon. People argue theology,
- 11:47but they cannot argue your testimony. Time and
- 11:52time again, there is going to be So many people
- 11:57that argue that it's just a book. It was made
- 12:00up. It's, you know, over so many years on so
- 12:02many different continents and all those other
- 12:04things and da, da, da, da, da. And, but they
- 12:08can't take away your testimony. They can't take
- 12:10away how he saved you. They can't take away how
- 12:14you used to be and how you are now. They can't
- 12:18take away the feeling that you have whenever
- 12:21you're in the presence of the almighty God. They
- 12:23can't take away. The moment that you realize
- 12:27that you were a sinner and you were lost and
- 12:29you had a savior that loved you and how it made
- 12:33you feel to surrender your life. Like they can't
- 12:37take that from you. Keep it short. Keep it sweet.
- 12:43And keep it sincere. People know when you're
- 12:46faking it. People know whenever you are trying
- 12:49to be haughty and like overzealous and like all
- 12:55these like fancy things. Keep it short, keep
- 12:58it sweet, keep it to the point. Everyone that
- 13:01knows me, I don't beat around the bush. I go
- 13:03straight to the point and it's the truth and
- 13:06that's what it is. I don't have what else to
- 13:08say. And in scripture, it says, keep your answer
- 13:11short. Yes, no. And you don't have to elaborate.
- 13:16He is doing the work behind the scenes. You don't
- 13:19have to be fancy. and places that you can shine
- 13:25without preaching a word work school the grocery
- 13:30store and on social media and so at work be that
- 13:35one who doesn't gossip who encourages and stays
- 13:40calm under pressure and so I don't go to lunchroom
- 13:45I don't gossip I do work out in the in my office
- 13:48or at the gym I go for a walk I'm the hole that
- 13:52people come down to. I'm the office that they
- 13:54come down and read scriptures on my wall. And
- 13:56it's encouraging. And whenever we're faced with
- 13:59something, we talk about it. We don't get all
- 14:05in the uproar. At school, if you're at school,
- 14:09stand up for someone. Invite someone in. Or offer
- 14:14a kind word when others are tearing them down.
- 14:17That person that sits by themselves at lunch,
- 14:20that person that may not have the coolest outfit
- 14:22or the brand new sneakers or whatever, be kind.
- 14:27That word that you say to them really can save
- 14:33their life because what happens if they are really
- 14:36just, no one is for them, everyone's against
- 14:39them, they don't have anybody at home and they're
- 14:41sitting there by themselves and you as a follower,
- 14:44you know, Christian. And you are a follower of
- 14:48Jesus and you've attracted a lot of friends,
- 14:50but they don't know Jesus. And so what happens
- 14:54if you would sit down at their well? What happens
- 14:57if you would sit down on their, at their fishing
- 14:59boat, just like Jesus did? Because that's, that's
- 15:02our job. And he sees that. He sees you being
- 15:05kind. And it says in scripture too, those that
- 15:07fed the poor fed me. Those that offered water
- 15:11to the needy, you gave me water. And so we are
- 15:15not serving people. We are serving God. What
- 15:19about the grocery store? Yes, even there. Thank
- 15:24the cashier. Smile. You'd be surprised of how
- 15:28powerful that is. So many times we are able to
- 15:36bless people that we are behind. But I also pray,
- 15:41let me be a blessing today. Let me see where
- 15:44I can be a blessing at, whether that's paying
- 15:46for someone's food. There was a woman at a store
- 15:52and I've seen her there several, several times.
- 15:54And she always had this kind of grimace and grouchy
- 15:56kind of context to her. And I was able to be
- 16:00behind her one day. and she had forgot her debit
- 16:04card and she only had enough cash and I said
- 16:07and she was like you know and she was trying
- 16:08to put food back or whatever I said absolutely
- 16:11not I got it and she that her frown and just
- 16:17kind of grimace like totally like softened she
- 16:23had a smile and she was like that is so kind
- 16:29I said, absolutely, God blessings. I said, you
- 16:31were an actual prayer, an answer to my prayer
- 16:34today. I pray that I get to bless somebody today
- 16:36and put someone in front of me. So thank you
- 16:39for being an answer to my prayer. On social media,
- 16:42be the light and not drama. Be encouraging, share
- 16:47hope, and not just scripture, but kindness. And
- 16:50so as you may have seen social media, I've prayed
- 16:54online every day. whether I'm in the ER with
- 16:58my dad or whether I'm in a different country,
- 17:01whether I am at home, outside, I pray every morning
- 17:07on social media. If he has given me breath, then
- 17:10I will pray. And it's about, we don't post drama.
- 17:14We don't comment on things. We shed the light.
- 17:18We are encouraging. And we share the hope that
- 17:22he, the things that he has walked us through
- 17:24and our testimonies that he has done for us and
- 17:27just to give him the glory and no one else. You're
- 17:35not responsible for the outcome, only obedience.
- 17:40And so 1 Corinthians 3 .16, it says, I planted
- 17:43the seed, apostles watered it. but God has been
- 17:48making it grow. So don't be discouraged if someone
- 17:52doesn't respond the way that you hoped. It doesn't
- 17:55mean that you failed. It just means that you
- 17:58planted something that God will grow later. At
- 18:03the perfect time, there has been so many times
- 18:06that I have planted a seed, the person got mad
- 18:14and left. But to come back years later and that
- 18:21little seed flourished. Because God's job is
- 18:26to do the tilling. He's the farmer, we're the
- 18:30planters, and he's the grower. And so it is not
- 18:33your role to change someone's heart. Your job
- 18:35is just to plant seeds. Your job is just to be
- 18:39kind and plant that seed. Your job is to see
- 18:42the hope, plant that seed. Your job is to have
- 18:46kindness and plant that seed. It is not your
- 18:48job to water it, grow it, put the sunshine on
- 18:51it, put the fertilizer on it. That is not, that's
- 18:53not your job. Your job is to plant the little
- 18:56mustard seeds and let the creator of the universe
- 19:03grow that seed. And at the end of the day, the
- 19:10biggest impact that we can have is love. And
- 19:15how we love others. John 13, 35 says, by this,
- 19:22everyone will know that you are my disciple if
- 19:25you love one another. So love big, shine bright,
- 19:31and don't be weird. Unless the Holy Spirit tells
- 19:35you to be weird and then obey. Otherwise, you
- 19:38can be friendly, faithful, and full of joy. And
- 19:43so your challenge this week, I challenge you,
- 19:46ask God for one opportunity to be the light naturally,
- 19:52not forcefully, not spotlighty, not flood lamp,
- 19:57just a natural glow. Look for that one person
- 20:03that you can encourage, pray for, Or simply just
- 20:06show kindness to. And if the Holy Spirit nudges
- 20:11you to speak, go for it. But if he nudges you
- 20:15just to be present and love well, that's powerful
- 20:21too. And to obey. So friends, that's it for today.
- 20:28And remember, it isn't about being perfect. It's
- 20:32about being present. It's about being intentional,
- 20:35to be spirit -led, and to shine so brightly with
- 20:41the love of Jesus that people can't help but
- 20:44be curious about the light in you. I want to
- 20:49thank you for listening to Fostering Faith. Don't
- 20:51forget to subscribe, share with a friend who's
- 20:54trying to figure out how to talk about Jesus
- 20:56without getting weird. And come back next week.
- 20:59We'll have more faith -filled fun and fire on
- 21:02the way. And until then, I would love to pray
- 21:04for you. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much
- 21:08for this time. Thank you so much for our light
- 21:10that is inside of us. Thank you so much that
- 21:12you have loved us big and so we can love others.
- 21:15Thank you so much for the words that you are
- 21:17going to give us whenever we're in that situation
- 21:19to say something that is going to be meaningful
- 21:22and impactful, short and sweet this week. Thank
- 21:25you that you have given us the opportunity to
- 21:27be a blessing to somebody. Thank you that you
- 21:29use us. I pray that the listeners surrender their
- 21:32lives and they can be used fully by you because
- 21:35there is no better job than to be used by you
- 21:38to grow heaven. I pray all of this in Jesus'
- 21:42name. Amen. Amen. Until next time, shine bright,
- 21:47love big, and don't be annoying. Have a great
- 21:51week. Love you guys.
