- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37The heart of Cain was exposed because he became jealous, even
- 0:42to the point of a murderous spirit.
- 0:44Because of his pride and self righteousness, he killed his
- 0:48brother. And we have to be careful of our
- 0:51motives when we do things. Are we doing them out of pride?
- 0:54Are we doing them out of self righteousness?
- 0:56Or are we doing them in faith, understanding that none of our
- 0:59good works are going to be good enough to get us into heaven?
- 1:02We don't do good works in order to earn our salvation, but we do
- 1:07good works because we are saved. If there were only one way to
- 1:10reach heaven, how do you think it could be obtained?
- 1:14Is it through a life dedicated to giving back?
- 1:17Is it by being a good person? What if I told you that only one
- 1:21thing truly matters? In today's message, Pastor Lewis
- 1:25reminds you that there is only one way to have eternal life
- 1:28with Jesus by placing your faith in Him.
- 1:32No amount of good deeds or perfect living can bridge the
- 1:36gap between you and eternal life.
- 1:39It is only through Jesus and His grace that you and I can be with
- 1:43Him eternally. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:46Book of Jude, chapter one with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:51of Grace. I was home one Saturday morning
- 1:55recently and I heard the knocking on the door.
- 2:02Kind of had an idea who it was. So that's why you didn't rush
- 2:04down to answer, right? So we come down, we answer the
- 2:09door. I think my wife actually
- 2:10answered the door 1st and then I was upstairs.
- 2:12I was trying to hide and, and she eventually answered the door
- 2:18and started talking with them. And she said, wait a minute, let
- 2:20me ask my husband. I thought, oh man.
- 2:23So so I came downstairs and this, you know, woman was there
- 2:30at the door. There was two other people on
- 2:32the sidewalk looking, watching. So we knew exactly what this was
- 2:37about. Total witnesses.
- 2:38So this woman is trying to share her Watchtower information with
- 2:42me and share her scriptures and try to make me convince me, you
- 2:47know, that Jesus was not God in the flesh, right?
- 2:52Yeah. She's just, you know, I believe
- 2:54in Jesus too, just like you do. I said, oh, do you?
- 2:56Yeah. I believe that Jesus, you know,
- 2:59is the Son of God. Do you?
- 3:00Yeah. I believe she is the Son of God.
- 3:02Yeah. Well, I believe that Jesus is
- 3:03God in the flesh. Oh, no, no.
- 3:09So she begins to explain to me why Jesus is not God in the
- 3:12flesh. And because she said it's just
- 3:16not logical. There's a number of things that
- 3:18she mentioned. It's just not logical.
- 3:19And that's one of the things I've noticed that they will say
- 3:22when you start talking about the things of God, you know, these
- 3:25things are not logical. For example, they think the
- 3:27Trinity is not logical. So they don't, you know, talk
- 3:30about the Trinity or what are you talking about?
- 3:32You know, God in three persons. What are you talking about?
- 3:35It's not logical, doesn't even make sense.
- 3:38So I listened to her talk about that.
- 3:40And then she, you know, we, you know, we even talked about the
- 3:44the incarnation. Of course, you know, she totally
- 3:46got rid of that. No, Jesus, you know, you know,
- 3:48no, he's not he. He's a son of God.
- 3:51He was created being, you know, but he's not God in the flesh.
- 3:54Talk a little bit about that. And and then she went to the
- 3:58resurrection talked a little bit about about that.
- 4:01Well, he resurrected, but Aiden resurrect in fully, you know,
- 4:06body. He's resurrected.
- 4:07He was just a spirit. What we just got finished
- 4:09reading last week, right, that when he resurrected, he
- 4:11resurrected in the in the body, right, Because Mary Magdalene
- 4:16grabbed his feet, right? You can't grab the feet of a
- 4:18spirit, right? So anyway, I made this one
- 4:23statement to her and this woman turned into an angry demon and
- 4:31all I said to her, well would you know these things are only
- 4:36discerned in the Spirit, Only the Spirit can recognize these
- 4:42things. Or you said I don't have the
- 4:44Spirit of God in me. Yes, yes.
- 4:53And she went on a rant that I never thought a woman that now I
- 4:57was, I'm about 6-1. Well, I was probably 6-1 then
- 5:02this woman, you know, probably only came to about here, but I
- 5:05mean, she just rant and raved and looked up and just I mean, I
- 5:09she wow, she was angry. She was really, really angry.
- 5:15We never had another person come back after that.
- 5:20Never had another person called. Have we anybody come back after
- 5:23that? Yeah, we never had another
- 5:24person come back after that. So she obviously wouldn't told
- 5:27her homies just bypass that house, OK, 'cause they 'cause
- 5:34they hanging with it. But yeah, I couldn't believe how
- 5:37angry she got. But it's the Spirit of God that
- 5:41discerns these things. That's why Paul prayed to the
- 5:46Colossians. When he prayed for the
- 5:47Colossians Church, he prayed that they would be filled with
- 5:52the knowledge of his will and all wisdom and spiritual
- 6:00understanding, spiritual understanding, because that's
- 6:04how these things are understood. But these false teachers don't
- 6:08have that. They don't have the Spirit, so
- 6:11they can't talk about the scriptures or the things of God
- 6:15from a spiritual standpoint. They can only look at it through
- 6:18the natural. They can only look at it through
- 6:21the natural. And that's why they get into so
- 6:25many problems, because they can't see it through the Spirit.
- 6:32First Corinthians chapter 2 and 11 says for what man knows the
- 6:36things of man except the spirit of man, which is in him.
- 6:41Even so, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
- 6:46Now we have received not the spirit from the world.
- 6:52If you have the spirit of the world, you understand the things
- 6:54of the world. People who are in the world,
- 6:56they can have a conversation with each other and say things
- 6:58that to us now, those things may sound absurd to us or just like
- 7:03things. There's no way we're doing that.
- 7:06You know, there's no way I'm, I'm going to be in agreement
- 7:09with this, but you can see in the times how people are fine
- 7:13with some of the way that society is changing.
- 7:15The people of the world are fine with it.
- 7:18They're totally fine with it. But us, we're grieved by it.
- 7:24And it's because the world takes on its own.
- 7:26The world loves its own. The world deals with its own.
- 7:29They understand those things because they have the spirit of
- 7:32the world. But we have received not the
- 7:33spirit of the world, but the spirit who is from God, that we
- 7:38might know the things that have been freely given to us of God.
- 7:44We get those things freely through the Spirit of God.
- 7:50But they, they have no understanding of, but yet they
- 7:54speak negatively about the spirit when you know someone
- 7:58that could be even someone who goes to church all the time.
- 8:02And because you may be, you know, walking in obedience,
- 8:05because the Holy Spirit, you're developing this relationship
- 8:07with the Lord and you're walking in the Spirit and you're
- 8:10walking, you're trying to, you're walking in obedience to
- 8:13the Lord as much as you possibly can in your own cause.
- 8:17And we, we're all still sin and we're honest about that with
- 8:20each other. But yet you get someone who's
- 8:23not into walking in obedience and they begin to start speaking
- 8:27evil of you. Oh, he thinks he's too good for
- 8:30us. He thinks he can't do this
- 8:33anymore. He can't do that anymore.
- 8:35You know, they start speaking evil of you.
- 8:38And that's exactly what happened when they start speaking evil of
- 8:41the teachers who were teaching the truth.
- 8:45They're speaking evil, those teachers demeaning them to other
- 8:50people. So then we going down here to
- 8:53verse 11, like he said, he says, whoa, he said they're like, you
- 8:57know, before he said they're like group beasts and they
- 9:00corrupt, you know, they, they, they corrupt themselves with the
- 9:03things that they do know. And then in verse 11, he says
- 9:06woe to them for they have gone the way of Cain and in the era
- 9:10of Balaam for prophet and in rebellion of Korah.
- 9:13Well, first of all, they're brute beast.
- 9:15And that means that they're only living in a way that satisfies
- 9:20the flesh, their primal instincts, brute beasts.
- 9:25You're living like a brute beast and that means you're just
- 9:27living to satisfy your urges. That's why animals are able when
- 9:31he said, you know, they corrupt themselves and in, in those
- 9:35things that they that they do know, because the only thing
- 9:39they do know is their urges, their loss, their desire for
- 9:44natural things. And that's why animals can get
- 9:48trapped. We have some people here who are
- 9:50hunters. They trap animals or they lure
- 9:53animals. How do they trap them?
- 9:55They lure them. How do they lure them?
- 9:58They lure them by things that they're driven to eat, things
- 10:02that they're driven to do. If you got an animal who loves
- 10:06meat, you put a piece of meat in a box, he's coming for it.
- 10:12He's coming for it. And when they come for these
- 10:15things, they don't come with a regard of the consequences of
- 10:19what they're. They don't even think about
- 10:21those things. Only thing they're thinking
- 10:22about is that I want to get to the meat because I'm going to
- 10:26satisfy this urge to eat. I want to satisfy this urge to
- 10:31eat. That's all they have, That's all
- 10:32they know. And when we live in disobedience
- 10:36to the Lord, when we live just doing what we want to do,
- 10:40ignoring the Spirit of God, then we live almost like brute
- 10:46beasts, just satisfying our flesh, satisfying our flesh.
- 10:54And how many times did we and men today, how many times do
- 10:59they fall into trouble following after their urges?
- 11:07How many pastors have fallen? How many people have fallen
- 11:11falling into these traps that the enemy sets to try to lure
- 11:18you to satisfy your flesh? I'm going to tell you something
- 11:22that's going to everyday there's something that the enemy is
- 11:25going to try to do in your life to try to set you up to fall
- 11:32into one of his traps and he knows what you desire.
- 11:37He knows where you're weak. So I so important stay close to
- 11:43the word of God and in prayer and to be filled with the spirit
- 11:47to ask every morning, Lord, fill me with your spirit today so
- 11:53that I can walk in obedience to you because I can't do it on my
- 11:57own. We would fall into every trap
- 12:00that the enemy was set if we try to do it on our own brute
- 12:04beasts. So when we try to please our own
- 12:06selves, that's what happened. We're like brute beasts.
- 12:09And he says woe to them. That woe means it's like an
- 12:12expression of of coming up calamity.
- 12:16Whoa, it's almost like a cursing.
- 12:22It's like an expression of of calamity or judgment.
- 12:24Woe to them. Jesus used it quite a bit in in
- 12:28Matthew 23 when he was talking to the Pharisees and he said woe
- 12:32you hypocrites, woe to you. They have gone in the way of
- 12:38Cain the heir of Balaam for profit, and also of Korah.
- 12:45Now it's interesting because Jude almost makes it seem like
- 12:50he thinks you already know what that means.
- 12:53You know, like he's like, he's sure that everybody who's
- 12:56reading this knows what that means.
- 12:59What does it mean to go in the way of Cain?
- 13:01What does it mean to go in the in, in in the era of Balaam for
- 13:04profit? What does it mean to go on the
- 13:08rebellion of Korah, of Korah? What does that mean?
- 13:11Well, unless you read the Old Testament, you won't know what
- 13:14that means. And but he just assumed that
- 13:17everybody read it because that's all they had was the Old
- 13:21Testament. So let's look at these.
- 13:24He said, first of all, you go in the way of Cain.
- 13:26How did Cain go? Well, if you read Cain's story
- 13:32way back, Genesis 4, that's where you read the story of Cain
- 13:39and Abel, where Cain actually killed his brother Abel.
- 13:44Now prior to that, though, they both came to God and offered a
- 13:48sacrifice. Abel, Cain's brother, offered a
- 13:54sacrifice of blood. There was a he was a shepherd,
- 13:59so he offered a sacrifice from his flock.
- 14:01It was a sacrifice of blood. Cain, on the other hand, brought
- 14:09a sacrifice that was from the field.
- 14:11Cain was a farmer, so he brought a sacrifice that was of the
- 14:15field, of his of his produce. Now, is it wrong to present a
- 14:24sacrifice of produce? No.
- 14:27Is it wrong to present that sacrifice of blood?
- 14:32That's not what the issue was. The issue is that only one of
- 14:39them presented it in faith. Only one.
- 14:43And it was Abel. And the reason why it's even
- 14:47said that Abel presented it in faith.
- 14:50Again, you'd have to go back into Genesis chapter and chapter
- 14:533 before where they were, when Adam and Eve sinned, when they
- 15:00were in the garden. If you remember when they
- 15:06sinned, they made fig leaves to put around their bodies to cover
- 15:13themselves up because they knew that they were naked, their eyes
- 15:17were open, they made fig leaves. God wasn't satisfied with that.
- 15:24That's not the sacrifice that he wants for sin.
- 15:31It had to be a blood without the without the remission, you know,
- 15:35without the shedding of blood, there can be no remission of
- 15:37sin. So it had animal had to die.
- 15:40Something had to die to cover that sin.
- 15:43So he, God sacrificed an animal for them.
- 15:48So the blood had to be shed for the remission of the sins and
- 15:51they put, he covered them with that.
- 15:55So when Abel came in that same vein, because of faith, the only
- 16:00way we're getting to the Father is through Jesus Christ and
- 16:03through the blood of Jesus Christ.
- 16:06So when Abel came and he presented the sacrifice with
- 16:11blood, that was in obedience to the sacrifice that God wants,
- 16:17and it was done in faith. It was done in faith.
- 16:22Hebrews chapter 4 he says very clearly, and I'll read it to
- 16:27you, you don't even have to go look for it, I'll read it to you
- 16:30over in Chapter 11. He says this.
- 16:34Hebrews 11 For by faith Abel offered to God a more excellent
- 16:40sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that
- 16:45he was righteous God testifying of his gifts.
- 16:49And through it he being dead, still speaks.
- 16:54He received that sacrifice because it was sacrifice.
- 16:57And faith, you see, Cain offered a sacrifice that was just from
- 17:02works of his own hands. Works.
- 17:06It was a sacrifice of works. You know, look what I do I earn
- 17:09this, but Abel understood that without the remission of blood
- 17:15there can be without the shedding of blood, it could be
- 17:18no remission of sins. He understood that.
- 17:21So that's why his his offering was accepted and and Cain's
- 17:25wasn't Bible also said, and this is my favorite Scripture.
- 17:29In fact, when I'll die, I want this to be on my head stone
- 17:33because it brought me through when I first got saved.
- 17:35Help me understand faith. Hebrews 11/6.
- 17:41But without faith it's impossible to please Him.
- 17:48When you come to God, you must believe that He is and that He
- 17:55is the rewarder of them. That not casually seek Him, but
- 18:02diligently seek Him. That verse got me through a lot.
- 18:08That verse got me through a lot. So that's why Abel's sacrifice
- 18:13was accepted and Keynes was not. But as a result of the heart of
- 18:18Cain was exposed because he became jealous even to the point
- 18:23of a murderous spirit. Because of his pride and self
- 18:27righteousness, he killed his brother.
- 18:30And we have to be careful of our motives when we do things.
- 18:34Are we doing them not a pride? Are we doing them not a self
- 18:36righteousness? Or are we doing them in faith,
- 18:39understanding that none of our good works are going to be good
- 18:42enough to get us into heaven? We don't do good works in order
- 18:46to earn our salvation, but we do good works because we are saved
- 18:51and it's who we are. It's who we are.
- 18:55So then we're going to go just just one more Balaam, he said.
- 19:00You'll run greedily in the air of Balaam.
- 19:03Well, Balaam was back in the Old Testament also.
- 19:06In order to get to Balaam's example, you'd have to go back
- 19:09to Numbers chapter 22. And I definitely suggest that
- 19:13you go back and read that when you get an opportunity because
- 19:17it talks about Balaam who was a, was a prophet, but he was a
- 19:22prophet with, he's kind of unscrupulous, put it that way.
- 19:28He used his gift of prophecy that God gave him.
- 19:33He used it for money, for filthy lucre, use it for money.
- 19:38And because he used it for money, eventually, again
- 19:43exposing his heart, he could not curse, which is what Balak the
- 19:48king at that time wanted him to do.
- 19:51He wanted Balaam to curse the children of Israel and they were
- 19:55coming out of Egypt and they were now on his territory and
- 20:01they wanted, he wanted those children cursed.
- 20:05Well, Balaam realized that he couldn't curse them because God
- 20:09had blessed them. However, because of his heart
- 20:13and because he wanted the money, I'll show you how to lead them
- 20:19into sin so that they become a curse to themselves.
- 20:24And he tempted them with the women, the Pagan women.
- 20:28He tempted them with them and they fell into sin with these
- 20:33Pagan women. Again, sexual immorality being
- 20:38the headline of that particular sin because of the urges that
- 20:44these men had, not being able to restrain them on their own and
- 20:49went into disobedience against God.
- 20:52So Balaam cursed was able to have those children basically
- 20:57curse themselves. And I'm going to wait before I
- 21:01go in the court because that's a story that takes a little bit
- 21:04more of a description that I think is really important.
- 21:08And I don't want to rush through that.
- 21:10Now think about, as we talked about earlier, our our
- 21:14thankfulness to just be saved, the salvation that Jesus Christ
- 21:19came and died for for us. And when I think about all these
- 21:24men, all these situations that these false teachers have fallen
- 21:29into because of their rejection of Jesus Christ, because of
- 21:33their rejection of the apostles doctrine and truth, they are
- 21:40bringing sin on themselves. But Jesus Christ came and he
- 21:44brought his word with he gave us his word.
- 21:48And as we said, all Scripture is inspired by God and it's all
- 21:54profitable for doctrine, which means it's profitable for
- 21:58teaching. It's also used for to correct
- 22:03us. It's used for reproof and for
- 22:07instruction in righteousness. And I'm so grateful that Jesus
- 22:13came as the word of God, Word made flesh that we would
- 22:20actually people who witnessed his life actually saw, not just
- 22:26read, but actually saw the word of God being lived out in the
- 22:33person of God the Son. And we have that opportunity
- 22:39when he gave his life and paid for our sins, which we could
- 22:45have never done on our own. No matter what, how good we
- 22:49think we were, how good we think we are, we would never be good
- 22:54enough to be able to achieve salvation.
- 23:00But Jesus Christ died on that cross that we would have our sin
- 23:06debt paid. It's paid in full.
- 23:11It's already done. So for those of you who have not
- 23:17taken advantage or those of you who have not received His
- 23:21salvation, you don't have to do anything for it.
- 23:24It's already done. You just have to accept it.
- 23:30Accept it. First of all, accept the fact
- 23:35that we needed it. I needed Jesus to come and die
- 23:38for me because I'm a Sinner. I needed Him to die for me.
- 23:42We have to accept that and the fact that He died not for
- 23:46himself, but He did it for us. He died for me.
- 23:50He died for you, God, for all of you.
- 23:53That's why He's our God. You've been listening to Living
- 23:58Waters of Grace with Pastor Lewis Harrell at Calvary Chapel
- 24:02Westmoreland in Greensburg, PA. As Pastor Lewis continues to
- 24:07preach through the book of Jude, he wants you to realize that you
- 24:11can't be a part time Christian. If you're going to follow Jesus,
- 24:15He is going to ask for your undivided loyalty.
- 24:19If you try to serve your own interests while following Jesus,
- 24:24you find that you can't do either one successfully.
- 24:27But if you run after Jesus with everything you have, you'll be
- 24:31amazed at how He provides for you and sustains you on the
- 24:36journey, even when you have no idea of where your provision
- 24:41will come from. If today's message has
