Transcript
- 0:00- Our second major event of the year is
- 0:03- less than three weeks away,
- 0:05- and that is when we remember the Somers
- 0:08- Point local hero, Richard Summers,
- 0:11- on Friday,
- 0:12- September 4,
- 0:13- which is two hundred and twenty two years
- 0:15- after
- 0:17- this, young man,
- 0:18- 26 years old who was born and raised
- 0:21- in Somers Point
- 0:22- died in Tripoli,
- 0:25- fighting a war,
- 0:26- against basically the same people we're fighting a
- 0:29- war against in Iran right now.
- 0:32- Now this Richard Summer story, it's a remarkable
- 0:35- story.
- 0:36- It was once well known by every American
- 0:39- with an eighth grade
- 0:40- education.
- 0:42- Yet today, hardly anyone knows that story except
- 0:45- us.
- 0:46- And even if you go
- 0:48- locally, we have an Atlantic County Historical Society.
- 0:52- They have nothing planned. We have an Ocean
- 0:54- City,
- 0:56- Historical Society, Egg Harbor Township Historical Society.
- 0:59- We have libraries in Atlanta County, Cape May
- 1:02- County, Ocean City,
- 1:03- Stockton University.
- 1:05- Not one major local institution
- 1:09- has any event
- 1:11- to remember
- 1:12- this remarkable local hero of Richard Summers, who
- 1:12- was, probably of all
- 1:16- South Jersey, he's probably
- 1:19- the
- 1:20- only
- 1:22- national
- 1:23- hero. We don't have any businesses doing Richard
- 1:23- Summers' promotions. No Richard Summers' t
- 1:25- shirts. Community
- 1:31- celebration. Nothing done by the
- 1:34- city. And I know tourist areas where they
- 1:37- have more
- 1:38- honor and respect for the local pirate,
- 1:41- you know, of some of these tourist towns
- 1:43- than we have in Atlantic City. So so
- 1:46- why is it that we, liberty and prosperity,
- 1:49- this little breakfast discussion group of a few
- 1:49- dozen dozen aging aging, boomers,
- 2:02- why. Because
- 2:03- Richard Summers fought and died in Tripoli,
- 2:06- North Africa
- 2:07- two hundred and twenty two years ago fighting
- 2:10- the same enemy we're fighting in Iran today,
- 2:13- the same enemy who murdered 3,000 Americans in
- 2:17- New York on 09/11/2001,
- 2:21- The same enemy that captured and took more
- 2:23- than a million white Christians
- 2:26- as slaves from Europe and made them slaves
- 2:28- in Africa
- 2:29- for more than a thousand years. And the
- 2:31- same people who captured more than 5,000,000 blacks
- 2:35- from Africa
- 2:36- and sold them as slaves,
- 2:38- through
- 2:39- the entire Arab world.
- 2:41- And by the way, that entire backstory
- 2:44- of the Richard Summer story is described in
- 2:46- detail in my book, the 1676
- 2:49- project.
- 2:50- And you could get that from us at
- 2:51- Liberty and Prosperity for $20 or at several
- 2:54- local stores.
- 2:55- You could buy it on Amazon for $25
- 2:58- and you could buy it on Kindle for
- 3:00- $10,
- 3:02- through through Amazon.
- 3:04- But but to go the question of your
- 3:06- your young conservative
- 3:07- Muslim friend who was concerned about,
- 3:10- you know, why we we don't talk about
- 3:13- the great majority of Muslims.
- 3:15- I think there's a very simple reason why.
- 3:18- Because when every
- 3:20- act of violence that we've been dealing with
- 3:23- was not just, you know,
- 3:25- a Pakistani,
- 3:27- you know, killing an American or
- 3:30- a Tunisian
- 3:31- killing a, you know, someone in France or
- 3:34- or someone from Gaza killing a a Jew
- 3:37- in in Israel.
- 3:38- It was always done
- 3:40- by people who called themselves Muslim
- 3:43- doing it in the name of their religion.
- 3:46- Now whenever we had
- 3:48- Jews commit horrible crimes,
- 3:51- blaming they were doing it,
- 3:53- in the name of their religion, they were
- 3:55- denounced.
- 3:56- You had,
- 3:57- I guess, maybe thirty or forty years ago,
- 3:59- you had a a a Jew murdered 22
- 4:02- Arabs in in Hebron.
- 4:05- And, you know, he was so denounced by
- 4:07- the Jewish community, they would not even let
- 4:09- him
- 4:10- be buried in a Jewish cemetery.
- 4:14- You had a,
- 4:15- you know, I I guess,
- 4:17- someone was murdering abortion doctors in Georgia
- 4:21- in the name of the Catholic church.
- 4:24- He was denounced by every Christian leader in
- 4:27- America and the Catholic church.
- 4:29- They made it clear that he was, you
- 4:31- know, he said he was speaking for the
- 4:32- religion, but every religious leader denounced him.
- 4:36- What happens to the people who are committing
- 4:39- these horrible crimes
- 4:40- against Christians and Jews and other non Muslims?
- 4:44- You know, the people murdering,
- 4:46- the Hindus in Bangladesh.
- 4:49- Horrible murders, but yet have you heard,
- 4:53- anybody,
- 4:55- you know, any imam, any leader of that
- 4:58- religion say, oh, oh, no. That Mohammed never
- 5:00- said to do that. These people are, violating
- 5:04- our religion.
- 5:05- You don't hear that.
- 5:07- And what happens is very often just the
- 5:09- opposite happens.
- 5:11- You'll have these,
- 5:13- you know, good, you know, Muslim neighbors, people
- 5:15- I work with, and I I deal with
- 5:17- this myself.
- 5:20- You know, who,
- 5:21- who who think the way I do. And
- 5:24- then they send their kids
- 5:26- to
- 5:27- the Muslim schools because they want their kids
- 5:29- to know their heritage where their kids will
- 5:31- look at these videos on their own. And
- 5:34- then the kids,
- 5:35- reach the conclusion
- 5:36- that their parents have betrayed their religion
- 5:39- and to make up for that sin, the
- 5:42- kids will commit this horrible violence.
- 5:44- So I think we have to keep talking
- 5:46- about,
- 5:47- what makes, you know, Jewish and Christian values
- 5:51- which are based on the Christian golden rule.
- 5:54- Do unto others as you would have them
- 5:56- do unto you.
- 5:57- Love your neighbor as yourselves, the 10 commandments.
- 6:01- You don't have any of that in Islam
- 6:03- and we have to talk about that and
- 6:05- many Muslims,
- 6:07- you know, grow up as adults not knowing
- 6:09- the differences between
- 6:11- Judaism and Christianity and really, Buddhism and Hinduism
- 6:14- on one hand and Islam on the other.
- 6:16- There's just a,
- 6:18- you know, a different way of looking at
- 6:20- the world,
- 6:21- a different way of looking at nonbelievers.
- 6:25- Well,
- 6:26- you explained it much better than I did.
- 6:28- That's for sure.
- 6:31- Alright. Well, now let's let's I have a
- 6:33- few minutes to talk about politics.
- 6:35- And, of course, all this stuff is posted
- 6:37- at libertyandprosperity.com.
- 6:40- But I think the biggest political issue that
- 6:42- I had to deal with this morning
- 6:44- was buying my morning coffee, 20 ounce cup
- 6:47- of coffee at Wawa
- 6:49- for $2.79
- 6:51- plus 19¢
- 6:53- state sales tax for a total of $2.98.
- 6:57- So, of course, the, state government is making
- 6:59- a bigger profit from that cup of coffee
- 7:01- than Wawa is.
- 7:03- And just a few months ago,
- 7:05- that same cup of coffee was a dollar
- 7:07- 75 plus 12¢ tax, a dollar 87.
- 7:11- So not only did I get a 60%
- 7:13- hike in the price of my coffee this
- 7:15- morning,
- 7:16- the state, New Jersey got a 60 state
- 7:19- sales tax hike. Because whenever the prices go
- 7:22- up, of course, the sales tax goes up.
- 7:24- And of course,
- 7:26- you know, everything that I went through with
- 7:27- that cup of coffee this morning,
- 7:30- I see when I buy groceries at the
- 7:32- supermarket, whenever I buy anything at any,
- 7:35- door, when I get my car fixed, when
- 7:37- I get a new car, new house, rent
- 7:38- college tuition,
- 7:40- your doctor or hospital visit.
- 7:42- So so why is it
- 7:44- that Wawa coffee and
- 7:48- everything else is so expensive?
- 7:49- And I think there are three, you know,
- 7:51- four main reasons.
- 7:53- Number one, of course, we have the higher
- 7:55- gas prices from the war in Iran.
- 7:58- And we only normally think about gas prices
- 8:00- when we saw for tanks,
- 8:02- but, of course, you need gas and oil
- 8:04- to grow the coffee beans. You need, gas
- 8:07- and oil to roast them, put them on
- 8:08- ships and trucks to bring it here. So
- 8:10- basically, the higher gas prices are causing everything
- 8:13- to
- 8:16- be more expensive. Second thing, of course, is
- 8:17- the federal,
- 8:19- debt or deficit.
- 8:21- I believe this year,
- 8:23- the federal government spent $1,800,000,000,000
- 8:28- more than it took in. So that's
- 8:30- one what what is what is that? 1,000,
- 8:35- $800,000,000,000
- 8:39- more than it took in, and and that's
- 8:41- even bigger deficit than last year. So basically,
- 8:45- the federal debt that was $20,000,000,000,000
- 8:48- ten years ago is now $40,000,000,000,000.
- 8:51- So, you know, every time the government spends
- 8:53- a dollar
- 8:54- more
- 8:55- than it takes
- 8:57- in, it just has to print up dollar
- 8:59- bills
- 9:00- back on nothing, and that is a big
- 9:02- reason why we have this inflation.
- 9:05- But yet, you look at the national news,
- 9:07- I don't think anyone is talking about it.
- 9:10- Certainly, nobody's talking about,
- 9:13- doing anything to stop it. I don't hear
- 9:15- the Republicans. I don't hear Trump. I don't
- 9:17- hear Democrats. It's like
- 9:19- nobody cares.
- 9:21- But we are playing this national game, I
- 9:24- think you call it pick up sticks, where
- 9:26- you take, you know, little sticks and you
- 9:28- make a big pile
- 9:29- and and somehow the person who loses is
- 9:32- the person who puts the that last stick
- 9:34- that makes the whole pile collapse.
- 9:36- So I think that's what we're, going through
- 9:38- right now.
- 9:40- So so how do you fix a problem
- 9:41- like that?
- 9:43- I guess, the the the way to start
- 9:45- is you gotta tell people,
- 9:47- you know, that the federal government was never
- 9:50- designed
- 9:51- to give every American
- 9:53- everything they want.
- 9:55- You know, basically,
- 9:57- we had the founders made a constitution
- 9:59- that said, look, the federal government
- 10:02- is so big
- 10:03- that, you know, you can't keep track of
- 10:06- every dollar it spends.
- 10:08- And we will never stop waste. We will
- 10:10- never stop corruption,
- 10:12- but we will limit the federal government
- 10:14- to a few limited things that nobody else
- 10:18- can do. We'll use the federal government to
- 10:20- have an army, a navy, and air force,
- 10:23- pulling money, make immigration laws, deliver the mail,
- 10:25- make sure that inventors and artists get paid
- 10:25- for their work, enforce the laws to keep
- 10:27- artists
- 10:28- get
- 10:29- paid for their work, enforce the laws to
- 10:31- keep people and their property safe.
- 10:33- But what do people expect from the federal
- 10:35- government today?
- 10:37- Well, you know, I I went to the
- 10:38- beach and the the beach washed away. I
- 10:40- I want the federal government to move sand,
- 10:42- you know, from one place to the to
- 10:44- the other.
- 10:45- The streets are bumpy.
- 10:47- I'm gonna go see, congressman Jeff Andrew and
- 10:49- tell him to pay my pay Atlantic City
- 10:51- streets, pay mortgage streets, pay Longfoot Street.
- 10:55- Why? Because if my local government paid it,
- 10:58- my taxes would go up and I wanna
- 10:59- pay taxes, I want somebody else to pay.
- 11:03- You know, Marty Small,
- 11:05- using
- 11:06- coronavirus
- 11:07- release money,
- 11:09- for, you know, $10,000
- 11:10- scholarship
- 11:12- for,
- 11:13- what what is it?
- 11:15- I think 10 or 20 or a 100
- 11:17- people,
- 11:18- who support Marty Small. Oh, and by the
- 11:20- way, I just found out about the food
- 11:22- bank
- 11:23- racket. All these years, I used to think
- 11:25- that the food banks were paid by people
- 11:27- donating
- 11:28- food so it wouldn't spoil when they put
- 11:29- it so people could pick it up. But
- 11:32- the federal government is spending millions of dollars
- 11:34- on these food banks,
- 11:35- and I've heard a lot of stories about
- 11:38- people
- 11:39- going into these food banks on a regular
- 11:41- basis,
- 11:42- taking the food, and then selling them in
- 11:44- stores
- 11:45- in Atlantic City and Pleasantville.
- 11:47- So, of course, nobody cares
- 11:50- if any of this money is wasted
- 11:52- because,
- 11:53- you you know, if you work for the
- 11:55- government, the more money you give away, you
- 11:57- know, the more important your position is, the
- 11:59- more people you hire, the bigger budget you
- 12:02- get next year.
- 12:03- So we we've completely lost sight of the
- 12:06- federal government.
- 12:08- And then, of course,
- 12:09- what else is making things expensive?
- 12:11- Well, I think the, property taxes.
- 12:14- You know, every time you hear the politicians
- 12:17- say, oh, we reduced your property tax. We
- 12:19- gave you an
- 12:20- anchor,
- 12:22- rebate. We give you a senior citizen freeze.
- 12:25- We're giving you, you know, this discount.
- 12:28- We keep forgetting
- 12:30- that, you know, those don't apply to Wawa.
- 12:33- When you shop at Wawa, they pay the
- 12:35- full property tax, and they raise the prices,
- 12:38- to do that.
- 12:40- And and so why are property taxes so
- 12:42- high?
- 12:43- Well, I mean, we all know why.
- 12:45- Everybody who works for the government I'd well,
- 12:48- I don't say everybody, but when you say
- 12:50- maybe 95%
- 12:51- of people
- 13:03- a
- 13:07- 10 or 20 people apply for every single
- 13:08- opening.
- 13:09- So it it's crazy. But as long as
- 13:12- we say,
- 13:13- well, you know, I don't care how much
- 13:16- my local government waste. They could waste as
- 13:18- much money as they
- 13:20- want as long as we could get federal
- 13:22- grants,
- 13:23- to give them, you know, to pay for
- 13:25- the stuff we need. Well, that's how things
- 13:27- are are going to get worse.
- 13:29- So, we we have that problem. And I
- 13:32- guess the
- 13:34- the the other, I'm trying to think of
- 13:36- the other
- 13:37- thing that makes things so expensive, and that
- 13:39- is the cost of permits.
- 13:41- And the fact that,
- 13:43- you know, if Wawa is too expensive, there
- 13:45- was a day
- 13:46- when, you know, somebody else would open up
- 13:48- a shop across the street from Wawa
- 13:51- and offer, you know, better sandwiches and lower
- 13:54- prices.
- 13:55- But we can't get that anymore because you
- 13:57- can't get a permit to build anything new
- 14:00- unless you, you get a special law.
- 14:04- You know, basically, our zoning laws say you
- 14:06- can't build anything,
- 14:09- unless it meets requirements that put everybody in
- 14:11- violation.
- 14:12- So if you have money, if you have
- 14:14- connections,
- 14:15- then you can get the permits you need
- 14:17- to build what you want. But people who
- 14:20- don't have money, who don't have connections,
- 14:23- can't, compete. So we really do not have
- 14:26- capitalism. We do not have free market enterprise.
- 14:29- We really already have socialism in America, so
- 14:31- you could see why young people are so
- 14:34- fed up. And I guess I guess I'll
- 14:36- close with this.
- 14:38- You know, there there was a time in
- 14:39- America, and I I see that clearly in
- 14:41- that book I wrote, the 1676
- 14:44- project,
- 14:45- how New Jersey shaped America.
- 14:47- It used to be we had boundless opportunity.
- 14:51- So if you,
- 14:52- you know, came over,
- 14:54- to America with nothing,
- 14:56- you could always work on a farm,
- 14:58- make enough money to buy a few acres,
- 15:00- and then you could have your own farm.
- 15:03- You could work on a fishing boat till
- 15:04- you had enough money to buy your own
- 15:06- fishing boat. You could be a carpenter, a
- 15:08- blacksmith, a wagon driver.
- 15:10- And then once you had your farm, you
- 15:12- could dig up clay and make bricks.
- 15:14- You could dig up bog iron and make
- 15:16- iron. All these boundless opportunities.
- 15:18- You didn't need a license. You didn't need
- 15:20- a permit.
- 15:21- And the interesting thing is when the British
- 15:24- saw how rich Americans were getting
- 15:27- and the British decided, well, we're gonna start
- 15:30- collecting oh, by the way, in in back
- 15:31- then, America had the lowest taxes in any,
- 15:35- civilized society
- 15:37- because people
- 15:39- educated their own children.
- 15:41- They took care of the poor. They, you
- 15:44- know, we we didn't pay for,
- 15:46- charity,
- 15:47- through the government, but
- 15:49- everybody was well fed. Everybody was well housed,
- 15:53- and we had a good life. And when
- 15:54- the British wanted to take that way of
- 15:57- life away from us
- 15:59- by giving us their taxes
- 16:01- and their permits and their regulations and all
- 16:03- their laws,
- 16:05- Americans rebelled. And what's interesting is
- 16:08- the richest you know, that rebellion was led
- 16:10- by the people who got rich. Your George
- 16:12- Washingtons,
- 16:13- your,
- 16:14- Richard Summers, your Richard Stocktons, your Ben Franklin.
- 16:19- They were rich. They could have afforded the
- 16:20- British taxes.
- 16:22- They had political influence. They could have had
- 16:24- the the British permits.
- 16:26- But,
- 16:27- what they did is they wanted to preserve
- 16:29- the system
- 16:30- that let them succeed
- 16:32- so everybody else could succeed.
- 16:34- And if you look at the rich folks
- 16:35- we have in America today,
- 16:38- you know, they got rich because they were
- 16:40- free to use our system.
- 16:42- But instead of saying, okay. We have to
- 16:45- make the laws simple
- 16:47- so everybody could go into the businesses we
- 16:50- succeeded at, They're just saying,
- 16:52- and I don't wanna use
- 16:54- the name names, but think of that fellow
- 16:56- in Ocean City. He's not saying that the
- 16:59- zoning lords of Ocean City are so screwed
- 17:01- up that nobody could open up a store,
- 17:05- or nobody could build a hotel. Nobody could
- 17:07- do anything
- 17:08- without all these ridiculous permits.
- 17:10- Let's change the laws and make them fair
- 17:13- for everybody.
- 17:14- He's saying, well, give me my permit. You
- 17:17- know, change the law for me. Give me
- 17:19- an exception.
- 17:20- Give me a redevelopment plan.
- 17:22- So, of course, people are angry and young
- 17:24- people have every right to be angry.
- 17:26- And, the only way we're gonna fix this
- 17:28- is if we go back to the roots,
- 17:31- that made America great in the first place.
- 17:33- Because again, you can't make America great again
- 17:36- if you have no idea what made America
- 17:39- great before. That's what we'll be talking about,
- 17:42- 09/30 to 10:30 this Saturday,
- 17:44- and every Saturday at
