- 0:00If you're like a lot of the men that I work with in recovery,
- 0:03you've been taught to be like tough.
- 0:06You've been taught to push through.
- 0:08Man up. Don't show weakness.
- 0:10But here's a question for you. What if real strength isn't
- 0:13about being harder on yourself, but what if it's about being
- 0:17kinder to yourself? Today we're going to be busting
- 0:20through some of the biggest myths about self compassion and
- 0:23why learning to stand within yourself instead of against
- 0:27yourself might be the most powerful thing you've done.
- 0:34Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 0:35I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 0:38in the space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 0:40diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 0:44authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 0:47about a single action or a. Moment.
- 0:49It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 0:52the rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 0:55So whether this is your? First time tuning in or you're a
- 0:58regular listener? Know this.
- 0:59What you're building here goes beyond a conversation.
- 1:02You're here to challenge, to change, and to celebrate the
- 1:05incredible journey of becoming your authentic self.
- 1:08Because when you dare to show up fully.
- 1:10The rewards are immeasurable. So welcome to be on the facade.
- 1:13Let's get started. All right, so let's get into it.
- 1:18But before we dive in, I do want to pause for a second and
- 1:21recognize something that's really important if you're one
- 1:23of those partners that's been hurt and the stuff we talked
- 1:25about today feels triggering because it feels like we're
- 1:27letting somebody off the hook. We're not.
- 1:30It's going to actually help the person in recovery face what
- 1:32they've done and own it and have an opportunity to build real
- 1:36trust and not fake their way through it.
- 1:38So we can't do anything without that self compassion.
- 1:41And I want to hold space for that fear today.
- 1:44If you're that betrayed partner, you deserve that healing and you
- 1:47deserve for somebody to be able to hold that space.
- 1:49And it comes on the other end of them having some compassion for
- 1:54self. And we're going to get into that
- 1:56day and talk about the reason why.
- 1:58So if this is triggering, they just want to validate that.
- 2:01So let's start with setting the stage for what self compassion
- 2:05really is inside of every person that's betrayed somebody or just
- 2:10I guess what's humans in general, They're going to be a
- 2:13different parts of us. There's a part of us that
- 2:15criticizes, there's a part of us that fears failure.
- 2:19There's a part of us that wants to numb out when we feel that
- 2:22failure, that wants to escape. And those parts of us, like,
- 2:28especially for those that are starting the journey of
- 2:30recovery, are in it early in they want to kill those parts of
- 2:33them that hurts people, right? Those parts of them that are
- 2:38scared, those parts of them that are angry, those parts of them
- 2:42that have shame. But healing doesn't happen
- 2:45because we destroy a part of ourselves, because we eliminate
- 2:48a part of ourselves. It happens because we lead those
- 2:51parts of us that fear failure, the criticize, the want to numb
- 2:54out. So right now many of the men
- 2:57that I work with have a manager that's running the show and that
- 3:01that manager has a voice that says get it together, do better,
- 3:04try harder, get your crap together.
- 3:07Instead, we need to develop self energy, which is that calm,
- 3:12confident, compassionate self leadership.
- 3:15And that self compassion, that's not a weakness, it's a strength.
- 3:19And it's the starting line for some of that real change and
- 3:22real recovery. So what we're going to do today
- 3:24is we're going to talk about some myths.
- 3:26Here's the myths. I'm going to give you 7 of them.
- 3:29Myth #1 self compassion means avoiding responsibility.
- 3:36Self compassion actually strengthens accountability and
- 3:38doesn't weaken it. I'll give you an example.
- 3:41If you own your mistake, like missing on something you said
- 3:44you were going to do and you hurt somebody piece that you
- 3:47said, I'm going to do this. You don't follow through.
- 3:49You can collapse into shame, right?
- 3:51But if you have self compassion, it'll allow you to choose to
- 3:54face it head on and make those amends.
- 3:56And we're going to talk about the reason why that would be.
- 3:59Myth #2 self compassion is weak and selfish reality that takes
- 4:06so much strength to take care of yourself and you can't lead
- 4:10yourself or others if you're running like on that empty.
- 4:13It's interesting watching and observing what we call outer
- 4:18circle behavior, self-care in recovery.
- 4:21But the men that will prioritize that I can think of again, just
- 4:25so much triggering dialogue that could be here.
- 4:27Remember my therapist early on my journey to saying to me, hey,
- 4:32your groups, your sessions, your therapy sessions, I have to come
- 4:37before birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, whatever it might be.
- 4:42Because at the end of the day, you're not going to have those
- 4:45unless recovery actually happens.
- 4:46You're not going to have time with your kids, you're not going
- 4:49to be having the anniversaries with your partner.
- 4:51You're not going to be having shared holiday experiences
- 4:54unless recovery comes first. And that actually comes from
- 4:57that self compassion piece that running on empty, that if I'm
- 5:02trying to help other people and support other people, if I'm
- 5:04empty inside of myself, it's not going to work.
- 5:07So self compassion is about self-care, it's about outer
- 5:09circle behavior, It's about those things.
- 5:13So if that isn't happening, how can you possibly be able to
- 5:16follow through on those pieces? And that is self compassion.
- 5:19We're going to take a quick break for a moment.
- 5:21I want to let you know of some things that we have coming up
- 5:23with true recovery services. Are you a woman carrying trauma
- 5:27in your body? Tension, discomfort, and that
- 5:30tightness that just won't quite release.

- 6:18spiritually. So if you're ready to step fully
- 6:21back into your life with freedom and strength, visit the show
- 6:24notes to learn more and to register.
- 6:28Let's get back to our episode myth #3 Self compassion lowers
- 6:33standards and kills motivation. Isn't that interesting?
- 6:37The self compassion like, the reality is self compassion like
- 6:41is going to build that resilience which is going to
- 6:43fuel the higher standards over time.
- 6:45That self talk that I have if I fail at something, but I think
- 6:50I'm going to do like maybe I say I'm going to show up with my
- 6:52partner and it doesn't go the way I'm think it's going to go.
- 6:55Shame makes you like want to quit and never try again.
- 6:58But compassion helps you like learn and grow from that
- 7:01experience and keep going. And we can just think about
- 7:04responding to a child. If they fell at something, how
- 7:07do we respond to them? Obviously with compassion, not
- 7:10with a bunch of shame. We know how they'd respond to
- 7:12both. Myth #4 you have to earn self
- 7:16compassion, a reality. You don't earn it after success,
- 7:21you actually need it most when you're struggling.
- 7:24I don't know, maybe it's a good analogy or not, but Thomas
- 7:27Edison was a light bulb. I don't know where I heard this
- 7:29but like how many times? It's like somewhere like around
- 7:321000 times. Probably should look that up
- 7:34before I start quoting stuff on a podcast.
- 7:36But what dialogue did he have in his mind inventing the light
- 7:39bulb? Did he shame himself after every
- 7:42failed attempt? No, you don't earn self
- 7:44compassion after you're successful.
- 7:46You get it when you're struggling.
- 7:48So like sitting in a group after a relapse or a slipped feels
- 7:52like that failure, right? But you're still choosing to
- 7:56stay and fight for your recovery.
- 7:59So being willing to look at and have compassion towards self
- 8:03keeps you engaged in that. Part of me wants to like pause
- 8:06and go, OK, what actually is not self compassion where I let
- 8:09myself off the hook And that is just a level of change.
- 8:14Do I move my feet after? Am I open?
- 8:16Am I transparent? So do I jump back into the
- 8:19recovery? In the work?
- 8:20Self compassion guides that myth #5 self compassion is just fake
- 8:26positivity. Let me say that again.
- 8:28Self compassion is just fake positivity.
- 8:31So reality, self compassion actually faces reality honestly
- 8:36and you choose kindness and like the middle of that experience,
- 8:40that honesty breed something new.
- 8:44So let me give you an example. So if you admit fear or shame in
- 8:48a group, right? And that type of setting without
- 8:51pretending and you stay present with yourself through that
- 8:54experience, it's not about, oh, I'm just good or I'm fine.
- 8:59Everything's OK. You don't have to know it.
- 9:02And I figured it out inside of that setting, when you show up
- 9:04the group, stop pretending that you've got everything together.
- 9:08It's about staying present with yourself through that.
- 9:10I feel those emotions of that failing or not doing what I said
- 9:14I was going to do. And I'm staying present with
- 9:18myself through that experience. I'm not running from that.
- 9:21I'm not needing to numb that out or pretend like everything's OK.
- 9:25And I'm noticing. I'm learning about my
- 9:26experience. It takes some time, but you have
- 9:28to admit what you experienced. I'm feeling shame, I'm feeling
- 9:32some fear, I'm feeling some anger, whatever it might be, not
- 9:36pretending myth #6 self compassion only works for good
- 9:43people. Self compassion only works for
- 9:45good people. Reality is self compassion is
- 9:48for every human out there, especially for those who are
- 9:52hurting. And it doesn't feel like that,
- 9:53right? I shouldn't be compassionate for
- 9:55self. I'm not a good person.
- 9:57Why? Why?
- 9:58I don't deserve that yet. And I think it's kind of like
- 10:00what we talked about before, the self compassion exists for all
- 10:04people. So example, somebody's fighting
- 10:07to build a relationship with his kids after a bunch of years of
- 10:10damage. That's pretty normal in this
- 10:11world, right? So showing up with humility and
- 10:14not for perfection because that's not what's going to
- 10:16happen. It's going to be a really
- 10:18important part of rebuilding that relationship.
- 10:21And humility exists with compassion, not from a good old
- 10:25fashioned be down myth #7 self compassion means avoiding hard
- 10:31emotions. Reality.
- 10:34Real compassion means staying with that pain and not numbing
- 10:37or running from it. These overlap, right?
- 10:41So let's just give an example of this.
- 10:43So you have a big fight or you're sitting alone somewhere
- 10:46and you're feeling like everything, you're breathing
- 10:49through it. You're staying connected to
- 10:50yourself instead of exploding or disappearing.
- 10:54So just take a breath. Which one of these myths have
- 10:58you believed in the longest? Where have you fought yourself
- 11:02instead of leading yourself? What part of yourself you've
- 11:05been trying to kill to get rid of?
- 11:07Healing doesn't start with being perfect.
- 11:10It starts when you're stepping into some level of kindness and
- 11:13truth with yourself. So it's calling things as they
- 11:15are, but how you engage yourself, the self talk through
- 11:18that, you know, just a friendly reminder if you are the person
- 11:21that did the betraying, the individual seeking recovery and
- 11:24not the person to betrayed. If you hear this and you're
- 11:26like, wow, I need some more self compassion.
- 11:30You don't have to run to your partner who you've hurt and say,
- 11:32hey, you know what I recognize like I got to work on the self
- 11:35compassion part. You don't have to put it in your
- 11:37face that you're lacking self compassion because of their pain
- 11:40of their them being hurt from your choices.
- 11:43Just allow yourself to notice this within yourself and bring
- 11:46your own community into it. And then just notice what level
- 11:49of accountability exists. Notice how you want to move into
- 11:54change, how you don't want to sit back, stop, get stuck and be
- 12:00paralyzed. How you want to actually move
- 12:02and continue forward and fighting for your recovery.
- 12:05Because if self compassion will drive you to engage your partner
- 12:09with empathy and you engage in in hearing her pain and that's
- 12:14what self compassion will drive you towards.
- 12:16It won't distance yourself towards them because it makes
- 12:19more sense of more compassion for partner when we can hold
- 12:23some compassion for self. Hopefully this was for you
- 12:28today. If you're especially if your
- 12:29partner was betrayed, not overwhelmingly triggering
- 12:33experience and recognize that part of me goes, I hope you
- 12:36turned it off. If it's not something that's
- 12:37helpful to you, if you're the betrayed partner and if there is
- 12:41some hurt from it, we'd want to know about it.
- 12:42We want to hear about it. And anyway, hopefully this is
- 12:46prompting to more thought and and thank you for spending the
- 12:50time with us today. Thanks for joining us today if
